Dr. Jerry M. Wallace has held the title of Campbell President for almost 12 years. Now as he finishes his last semester in the position, he looks forward to what’s next and reflects back on getting to where he is today.
President Wallace reflects before retiring his title By Sean Neal Editor
In the past 12 years, a lot has changed for Campbell. Within that time, the campus gained a convocation center, the football program returned and new medical programs have been established, to name a few major changes. As president of Campbell University for the past almost 12 years (it’ll be 12 years on May 29), Dr. Jerry Wallace oversaw all of these new additions and more, and witnessed the lofty implications for Campbell’s growth that came with them. The moments stated above in particular are some of Wallace’s favorites during his time here. Now, as he announced last April, Wallace will be stepping down from his position as president, officially retiring the title on June 30.

After taking a yearlong sabbatical, Wallace will return to Campbell July 1, 2016, to assume the honorary role and title of university chancellor. As chancellor, he will work in the medical school teaching classes on medical ethics and servant leadership. Wallace said his reasons for stepping down as president are threefold. Among them that he will be passing on the title to successor Dr. J. Bradley Creed, who will officially become Campbell’s president on July 1. “Being a Baptist preacher, you always have three points,” Wallace said. “On April 20, I will be 80 years old. Number two; I feel that my work has been accomplished. And number three, I’m very excited about our new president Dr. Creed becoming the fifth president of Campbell.” Giving the subject more thought,

Wallace adds a fourth reason. “And number four, I’m going to have some time for myself and my family.” Wallace has worked at Campbell for 45 years. Before becoming president of the University in 2003, Wallace started at Campbell in 1970 as an adjunct professor of sociology. His later titles include chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and vice president for academic affairs and provost. Before Campbell, and before his previous career as a pastor, Wallace spent 19 years as a student in undergraduate and post-undergraduate programs. In college at ECU, Wallace had originally planned to become a lawyer with a double major in English and government. See Wallace, Page 6

Campbell University hosted a number of schools within the Big South Conference, among others, on April 10 and 11, as home to the seventh annual Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium. Showcasing research topics ranging from biology to communication studies, students had the opportunity to share papers and presentations on topics they found interesting. Presbyterian College, Liberty University, Columbus State University, Virginia Military Institute, Kennesaw State University and UNC-Greensboro are some of the schools that were represented among the students who participated in the event. “For students, one of the benefits of this conference is it allows stu-
Professor Pete Kenny leaves communication studies legacy By Devin McCray Staff Writer
This year, the Communication Studies department will say goodbye to an instructor who is, as his pupils will attest, “popular with students.” Professor Pete Kenny, or as his students call him “PK,” has taught in Campbell’s Communication Studies department for about seven years. Among his notable accomplishments at Campbell, Kenny, along with Dr. Dean Farmer, has helped pioneer the department’s Campbell Now! TV programs. Kenny has taught for 18 years, and See Kenny, Page 7
