JOURNAL

THE

Dear Reader, Welcome to the April edition of “The Journal” We hope you enjoy this month’s magazine. With it being the month of April and 1st being April Fool’s day we have purposely tried to keep the magazine lighthearted, in order to balance out the serious matter of embargos and the ongoing battle the residents of Camposol are having with MASA. This month you will find some stories that might well be an April fool and some more that are so crazy that they just might be true. I´ll let you decide which are which! Last month I mentioned here that on the 17th March I was going to be running the Murcia City Half Marathon. At the time of going to print with this month’s magazine, I still haven’t run. I’ll be doing a full report in the May edition on how the run went and how much was raised in support of Brain Tumour Research. Brain Tumour Research is a really important charity. Of all UK Cancer research spending, these guys receive less than 1%. This is why its vitally important that people like you and I donate what we can and in doing so help improve the outcome for those diagnosed with Brain Tumours. You can visit my page on the internet to find out more: www.justgiving.com/Robbie-Rutherford making a small donation is easy, just follow the instructions. Whether it’s 1€ or 10€ every cent counts and I would like to thank all the people and local businesses that have donated thus far. Please keep the donations coming! There are more good things happening at Camposol Business Centre this month. Not only do they have a Pharmacy, Dentist, Chiropodist, but now to add to the list of health care businesses, a new state of the art Health Clinic is opening! The clinic will have a GP as well as a Nurse and a number of visiting specialists ranging from Physiotherapists to Oncologists. For more information you can see their advert later in the magazine. Due to our office being in the business centre, I for one welcome this news. The Business Centre is now probably the safest place to work in area! Enjoy this month’s magazine, I hope you find a chuckle between its pages! Regards,

S.O.S ON TOUR

The ‘Silly Old Sods’ (S.O.S) are a group of like minded men who meet every Friday at Bali Hi on Camposol ‘B’. At a recent meeting it was decided we needed to bring some culture into our lives, so we chose to visit Velez Rubio which is a beautiful village with a long history. So on 17th January 2013, the group set off to visit the source of the nectar produced at the ‘Saxon Brewery’ by the creative hands of Ian and his wife Iwona

Saxon Bitter is brewed in the traditional English way using English hops, malt and yeast.

The brew masters explained the brewing process from boiling the mash and then adding hops and yeast, boiling again and then pumped into fermentation tanks until ready to be barrelled. After this thirsty work Ian offered to tap a barrel and let the group taste the brew……it went down very well!! Iwona left the brewery to collect pies which the group had previously ordered from a local English baker. These were eaten by the group and washed down with several pints of Saxon Bitter which was supplied free by Ian (the pies we paid for ourselves). The S.O.S. would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ian and Iwona for their detailed instruction in brewing and the free beer. You can also buy a selection of

“Beautiful Bathrooms” is a reliable and efficient service supplied by Andy Money who is fully trained in all aspects of plumbing, tiling and complete bathroom installation . Andy has an extensive portfolio of work not only from the U.K. (where he ran his own business for many years), but also in the surrounding areas of Mazarrón. Andy has a real eye for detail and enjoys his work. This is obvious in the final product of each bathroom installed.

One aspect of his work locally is the simple process of “Bath out, Shower in” as many people prefer the idea of a complete shower area without the hassle of climbing into a bath in order to get to a shower. In some bathrooms it is possible to achieve a “Walk In” shower similar to the idea of a wet room. Andy will help with advice on your choice of tiles and fittings if needed. He will happily accompany you to choose your tiles if you wish. Also, he will

Paramount Resort Theme Park in Murcia would go ahead as planned. At times the project has seemed doomed due to planning constrains, lack of funding from overseas investors and concerns surrounding its environmental impact.

in Europe. The group claim that the structure would be visible for up to 50 kilometers and therefore damaging to the aesthetics of the landscape. They also argued that the proposed state of the art LED lighting system attached around the spokes of the wheel would be “so powerful that not only could they affect the ambient light in surrounding towns and villages, but they could cause confusion to aircraft such as lost UFO´s and hot air balloons looking for a safe place to land.”

Spanish Environmental group “Ecologistas del Mundo” which translates as “Ecologists of the World” have had several meetings with local government officials over the last year, Due to the time scale involved in voicing their concerns constructing such a large Ferris Wheel, over the proposal for Pemursa had no option but to begin one of the park’s main work on the giant wheel in late 2010, attractions- a giant London Eye style Ferris wheel. “The wheel must be built and tested before the park is completed. In this way we can address any environmental concerns before the Park opens, ensuring that we fulfill our environmental responsibilities as well meeting the deadline for the Parks completion.” In late 2012 many people driving down the RM2 Motorway would have seen the giant wheel being hoisted onto its cantilever base on the far side of the Paramount Park construction site. In early 2013, Colour Kinetics (the company responsible for the lighting of the London Eye) were busy installing the high tech 2 trillion watt lighting system. This system can be controlled remotely displaying up to 15 billion colours simultaneously. It is this system that has been the major cause of concern for the

group -Ecologistas del Mundo. “When they light it up, all of Murcia will be like a discotech- but without the loud music and crowds dancing Gangham Style” Said Ernesto Paco Garcia the head of the group. “You will be able to see Murcia from the moon- This is very bad for all of us- especially those who like to bird watch in the dark”. Premursa have now confirmed that the Wheel is in place and the lighting system is operational. As part of their scheduled testing they will switch the lights on to full power on Monday the 1st April at 10.37pm for the duration of 15 minutes. They ask all residents in the vicinity of the surrounding villages, urbanizations and towns, in particular those who live on or nearby Campsosol, Mazarron Country Club, and Puerto De Mazarron to go to their roof terraces and make notes on the colours

they can see in night sky. “This will help us better understand what colours people prefer looking at at nightime” said a park official. Further testing will be done on the “Ovaloid Capsules” of the fully operation wheel later in the year. A press release from the developer states that “ volunteers with good life insurance, no fear of heights and no pre-existing medical conditions are currently being sought to help test capsule capacity, durability, and overall safety”

Office 968 152 191 Mobile 618 615 903 Embargos by Rod Sawyer There now seems to be a conflict between what Masa are saying and what Espadas & Asociados represented by Luis Canovas proposes. Basically MASA are recommending a proposal. It involves folk from three of the polygonos getting their escritura, whilst the administrative embargo is removed. This process does not deal with any private embargos on the property. What the process will do is remove MASA from the equation. There is an old saying, beware of Greeks bearing gifts! In whatever scenario you paint, it is in MASA’s interest to get out from under any obligations they can. They have been careful to distance themselves from the private embargos. Luis Canovas, along with Shirley Fisher the British lawyer, both based at the Camposol Business Centre insist that the embargoes must be dealt with first. Jose Navarro, the new mayor of Camposol and CRA committee member, has posted the following on the CRA site “Third Party Rights cannot be lodged in Court on the basis of an Escritura signed AFTER the date of the embargo. Such escritura would only convert the contract of sale into a Public Document but this cannot be the basis for the claim”

page 10

OK: The deed is not likely a valid proof in the tercería process. But this does not mean you shouldn’t get your escritura, but you should get a proper escritura. Both processes (escritura and terceria) should be applied ASAP. A legal opinion lodged by Espadas and Associates, the lawyers based in Alhama with which the Business Centre is connected, concluded “1. Acceptance of the signature of the escritura is only beneficial for the buyer if the escritura can directly and will immediately be registered in the Land Registry. 2. Alteratively, the signing of the escritura would have no positive outcome for the buyer but, in fact on the contrary, it could create a negative: the inability to sue the seller to request a deed capable of registration and simultaneous access to the registry through the Court.”

MASA did in the first place, allowing owners to take possession even though there was no final paperwork legalizing the properties had no basis in law. Had the original process followed the law, then there would be no problems today. What’s important is to establish your right to the property first through the removal of the threat of the private embargo, then to acquire the escritura. Luis Canovas has always maintained there is a differential between the three polygonos and the rest of Camposol where there was administrative action by the town hall. Clearly in the case of the private, removal of the embargo, clears the way for the escritura to be issued and properly registered at the Land registry subject to all planning regulations having been complied with. It was always the case that in the cases of D23,27 and 32, (and RE3 for that matter) the Town Hall had to be involved as well.

The consequence of securing an escritura on properties, after the date of the embargo could be that you the owner replace MASA as the objective, in other words you still have to deal with the embargo. In Paul’s case on Sector A, outlined some time ago in the Journal, the court refused to recognise him as owner even though MASA was prepared to acknowledge him. His problem was he could not prove to the court that he owned the property. This process is not straightforward. What

Individual owners need to make up their own minds which advice to follow. The main point is the need to act with some urgency. Sadly some at least of the embargos are held by owners on Camposol and the surrounding area who have won cases against MASA but not been paid out. They have been represented by local lawyers who must know that many of the embargoed properties are not MASA owned but are owned by individuals. These owners are as much victims as anyone else. This issue will of course boil over the first time an embargoed property goes to

www.thecamposoljournal.com

2013

auction. Any escritura gained through the MASA initiative will almost certainly contain a clause which acknowledges the existence of the embargo, this will still leave the owner exposed to possible court action. The CRA has published the following to members Dear CRA Member, Masa/Justo y Manoli have asked the CRA to pass on their recent communication with regard to properties on D23, D27, D32, A-RU21 and A-RU22. Their letter has been translated by Jose Navarro and can be found at the end of this email. In addition to their letter, and as a matter of urgency, Masa have also requested that we inform those on D27 who await deeds, of the following message: ‘In the event you are unable to visit the office, documents should be emailed to dsegarra.proyectos@grupomasa.com’ Again, in addition to the below letter, Masa request that members on A-RU21 and A-RU22 to contact them on dsegarra. proyectos@grupomasa.com Masa will be opening an office near/ next to the Correos/Post Office on Camposol B from 28th February. They will open this office every Thursday between 9.30 and 12.30 in order to accept documentation. Masa also state the following: ‘This office will be solely dedicated to reception of the mentioned documentation, not to any other issue’. As always, if you have any questions regarding Masa’s latest information or any other legal query please consult your solicitor in the first instance or dsegarra. proyectos@grupomasa.com Kind Regards, Camposol Residents Association Enc: Translation of Masa’s letter JUSTO Y MANOLI, S.L. (JUMASA) B-78438801 Princesa, 2 28008 MADRID COMMUNICATION TO PEOPLE WITH NO PURCHASE DEED ISSUED CAMPOSOL POLIGONOS D23 D27 AND D32

2013

Hereby we announce that we have started to provide the New Building (Obras Nueva) certificates of poligono D27. Horizontal Division and New Building certificates for D23 and D32 in the coming days. Due to causes not attributable to Justo y Manoli, S.L., the prescriptive Building Licenses of these poligonos were not granted in due time. The poligonos were completely built since 2007. The majority of you took possession from that date having paid the entirety of the price. According to recent Court Decisions, there is currently no urbanistic infraction, therefore the houses cannot be demolished. The delay of the Public Administration for providing the proper documentation, made impossible for us to issue the New Building and Horizontal Division. Subsequently, it prevented Justo y Manoli to issue Public Purchase Deeds to the owners in order to have their ownership registered at the Land Registry of Mazarrón. A result of all this are the embargo notations on the properties upon debts of Justo y Manoli, S.L. with the Tax Office, the Murcia Region, and several individual clients who, even knowing about the existence on these plots of houses owned by other people, considered proper to seize them in order to ensure the collection of the debt. As you are the real owners of the properties, it is necessary to formalize the Public Purchase Deeds and to lodge a process of Tercería de Dominio in administrative and judicial way, in order to declare the real owner of each seized property, thus canceling the embargo notations upon the said properties. There is an understandable mistrust for signing the Purchase Deed with the embargo notations, but this is necessary and advisable in order to enforce your right of ownership and to demand before the Public Administration

and the executing individuals that every one of you are the owners of the dwellings built on the seized plots. The Notary will certify that Justo y Manoli S.L. sold you a dwelling that is already paid, that you took possession of it and that you feature it as its owners. The fact of issuing Deeds with embargoes does not take you in a worse position than it already was. Your property is already being seized for a debt that is not yours. By signing your Deed, the property is still seized, but the Deed serve as a fundamental proof of the purchase taking place before the date of the embargo. It should be clear that by signing your Deeds you are not personally assuming Justo y Manoli S.L.’s debt. The property respond to this debt as it already was. At the moment of lodging the Tercería de Dominio processes, any possible auction is suspended until its resolution. Therefore, once it is lodged, no property will be auctioned. Those owners not signing their Purchase Deed will assume the risk of having their property seized (if it is not seized already) and auctioned (if it is already seized) if they do not lodge the Tercería de Dominio process. In order to facilitate this task, Justo y Manoli, S.L. place at your disposal some of the resources for the progress of the legal actions for final price of 600€per dwelling, independently of the number of Tercería processes needed and the category of them

(either administrative or judicial). This figure constitutes a contribution of the buyer for the lawyer and barrister fees, as well as judicial fees. The rest of the cost will be assumed by Justo y Manoli, S.L. After that, the originals or notary copies must be provided at the Notary the day you sign your Deed. They also can be delivered to the office that we will open in Camposol, next to the Post Office. Nash Warren Insurance

So who are we? We are an insurance agent established in the UK since 1981 and in Spain since 2005. We are authorised and regulated by the FSA and DGS. We deal with several companies for various types of policies. It is often surprising to be asked if we do more than car insurance. In fact, yes, of course we do. We can offer policies for cars (UK and Spanish), homes (permanent, holiday or rental properties), motorbikes (UK and Spanish), quads, health, life, business, liability (including hunters and fishermen), travel, pets and… well just ask! If we cannot arrange a policy then we can normally point you in the right direction. But there are lots of Insurance companies; surely they are all the same? Why choose Nash Warren? Flexibility. OK, you are happy with your current company but what happens if your circumstances change? Can they change to meet your requirements? If you

www.thecamposoljournal.com

currently get 90 days use outside Spain with your car insurance, what happens if this is no longer enough for you? Can it be extended? You have traded in your Spanish car and want to change it for a UK plated vehicle. Is that possible? Does your home insurance policy cover you for more than one incident of the same type (for example water damage) in any one year? Are you able to change that if it is not acceptable? Because we deal with a variety of companies we have the ability to find a policy that best suits your needs even when your situation changes. Most companies have set guidelines of what they can and can’t cover but the advantage of dealing with an agent is that when a change of policy is needed it is not a problem. In addition, we can assess your needs during a conversation and find a policy which best suits you. We do not favour one company over another nor do we sell policies solely based on price. So, whatever your needs, just give us a call or visit our office in Bolnuevo, Mazarron for a no obligation quotation or just a general chat about your insurance arrangements. You may be pleasantly surprised with the prices and cover we have on offer!

13. The English devotion to St George pre-date the Norman Conquest, in the 11th century.

5. St George is also the patron saint of scouting. 6. The most popular story about St George is of him slaying a dragon. However, in reality, it is highly unlikely that he did. During the Middle Ages, dragons commonly represented the devil. It is more probable that he chased away bad spirits. 7. Despite the improbability that St George actually fought a dragon, stories persist. In one version, the dragon’s scales were so hard that St George’s spear shattered into a thousand pieces. 8. The real St George is believed to have been a brave Roman solider who protested again the Romans’ torture of Christians.

St George England celebrates its national day on the 23rd April, with the spotlight shining on St George. We unearth 20 facts that people don’t know about our patron saint. 1. Despite the fact that St George has been England’s patron saint since the 14th century, a recent survey showed that only one in five people know that St George’s Day falls on April 23. 2. The same survey showed that a quarter of English people do not even know who their patron saint is. 3. St George died on the same date as Shakespeare. St George died on 23 while Shakespeare followed on that day in 1616. 4. A popular custom in bygone years was for people to wear a red rose in their button hole, the national flower for the national day.

interesting story to tell others, then please forward the details to us here at The Journal. Profile of a Reader: Dry Stone Walling Dry stone is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. Dry stone structures are stable because of their unique construction method, which is characterized by the presence of a

load-bearing façade of carefully selected interlocking stones. Dry stone technology is best known in the context of walls, but other structures also exist.

page 18

Jason Jessop served his apprenticeship in the beautiful but often harsh landscapes of Yorkshire. He was captivated by the differing shapes, forms, textures and colours that only real stone can bring. He was lucky enough to fulfill his childhood dream and restored many historic properties for the English Hertitage, thus taking him to master craftsman status. He restored and maintained many of Britain’s Cathedrals, Churches, Abbeys and Castles. Jason now resides in the Mazarrón area, where there is a wonderful diversity of stone posing new challenges. He was both amazed and sad to discover that he was one of the last dry stone wallers in the region of Murcia. The well that he built at Los Palacios (Camposol, Sector A) and the numerous others he has built in the area, are the first to be built in this way in 30 years. ‘I feel a tremendous pressure and obligation to try and preserve this precious profession……if not it will end with me. I have been in touch with the Department of Culture at Mazarrón town hall and they are now exploring the possibility of me teaching the profession to Spanish people in an attempt to bring the profession back-to-life. One possibility that I would particularly relish would be to teach disadvantaged youngsters (of any nationality), or those with learning difficulties….after all we cannot all be brain surgeons!!!’ he said, when he spoke to ‘The Journal’ recently. Dry stone walls are proven to last. Here are some interesting facts which Jason gave us about them, that you may not know already: • they are flexible - avoids cracking (especially useful in areas like Camposol C and D where lots of movement is experienced)

www.thecamposoljournal.com

• resistant to earth tremors • water/gota frías just pass through them • 200-800 year life span…..some are still standing following the Arabic invasion of Spain 1000 years ago. • resistant to subsidence and under-ground streams • plants can grow out of them, over them or up them • they can be used to build garden features around plants, or windmills and wells • they don’t crack, need painting or any maintenance • they are stronger than reinforced concrete and steel block walls and are not much more expensive to build….as they do not need a concrete foundation • they are charismatic, beautiful and interesting to look at There aren’t many things that can be built that will stand the test of time, but dry stone walls are a time capsule, a legacy that you can pass down in your family. For more information and photos, Jason has a web site www.artofstonework.com or can be contacted on 650 700 666

Shakespeare

you’re in the right place! Below is a range of 30 little known facts about William Shakespeare. Do bear in mind that very little in the way of hard facts is actually known about Shakespeare’s life, but here we have a range of interesting facts: Shakespeare lived to 52. It is known that he was born in April 1564 and that he died on 23rd April 1616. We know that he was baptised on 26th April 1564 and scholars now believe that he was born on April 23rd. He therefore died on his fifty-second birthday, coinciding with St George’s Day. How fitting that the great English writer is so closely identified with the patron saint of England! Shakespeare had seven siblings. They were: Joan (1558); Margaret (1562); Gilbert (1566); Joan II (1569); Anne (1571); Richard (1574) and Edmund (1580). Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway when he was 17. She was 26 and she was pregnant when they married. Their first child was born six months after the wedding. Shakespeare and Anne Hathawy had three children together – a son, Hamnet, who died in 1596, and two daughters, Susanna and Judith. His only granddaughter Elizabeth – daughter of Susanna – died childless in 1670. Shakespeare therefore has no descendants. Shakespeare died a rich man. He made several gifts to various people but left his property to his daughter, Susanna. The only mention of his wife in Shakespeare’s own will is: “I gyve unto my wief my second best bed with the furniture”. The “furniture” was the bedclothes for the bed. Shakespeare was buried in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon. He put a curse on anyone daring to move his body from that final resting place. His epitaph was: Good friend for Jesus’ sake forbear, To dig the dust enclosed here: Blest be the man that spares these stones, And curst be he that moves my bones.

page 20

Though it was customary to dig up the bones from previous graves to make room for others, Shakespeare’s remains are still undisturbed. One of Shakespeare’s relatives on his mother’s side, William Arden, was arrested for plotting against Queen Elizabeth I, imprisoned in the Tower of London and executed. During his life, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets! This means an average 1.5 plays a year since he first started writing in 1589. His last play The Two Noble Kinsmen is reckoned to have been written in 1613 when he was 49 years old. While he was writing the plays at such a pace he was also conducting a family life, a social life and a full business life, running an acting company and a theatre. Few people realise that apart from writing his numerous plays and sonnets, Shakespeare was also an actor who performed many of his own plays as well as those of other playwrights. During his life Shakespeare performed before Queen Elizabeth I and, later, before James I who was an enthusiastic patron of his work. Shakespeare’s profession was acting. He is listed in documents of 1592, 1598 and 1603 as an actor. We know that he acted in a Ben Jonson play and also in his own plays but it’s thought that, as a very busy man, writing, managing the theatre and commuting between London and his home in Stratford where is family was, he didn’t undertake big parts. There is evidence that he played the ghost in Hamlet and Adam in As You Like It. In Elizabethan theatre circles it was common for writers to collaborate on writing plays. Towards the end of his career Shakespeare worked with other writers on plays that have been credited to those writers. Other writers also worked on plays that are credited to Shakespeare. We know for certain that Timon of Athens was a collaboration with Thoma Middleton; Pericles with George Wilkins; and The Two Noble Kinsmen with John Fletcher. Some scholars have maintained that Shakespeare did not write the Shakespeare plays, with at least fifty writers having been suggested as the “real” author. However, the evidence for

www.thecamposoljournal.com

Shakespeare’s having written the plays is very strong. Shakespeare is the second most quoted writer in the English language – after the various writers of the Bible. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre burnt down on 29th June 1613 after a cannon shot set fire to it during a performance of Henry VIII. Shakespeare is always referred to as an Elizabethan playwright, but as most of his most popular plays were written after Elizabeth’s death he was actually more of a Jacobean writer. His later plays also show the distinct characteristics of Jacobean drama. Almost four hundred years after Shakespeare’s death there are 157 million pages referring to him on Google. There are 132 million for God, 2.7 million for Elvis Presley, and coming up on Shakespeare’s heels, George W Bush with 14.7 million. Suicide occurs an unlucky thirteen times in Shakespeare’s plays. It occurs in Romeo and Juliet where both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, in Julius Caesar where both Cassius and Brutus die by consensual stabbing, as well as Brutus’ wife Portia. Some of Shakespeare’s signatures have survived on original documents. In none of them does he spell his name in what has become the standard way. He spells it Shakespe; Shakspe; Shakspere and Shakespear. Shakespeare lived a double life. By the seventeenth century he had become a famous playwright in London but in his hometown of Stratford, where his wife and children were, and which he visited frequently, he was a well known and highly respected businessman and property owner. The American President Abraham Lincoln was a great lover of Shakespeare’s plays and frequently recited from them to his friends. His assassin, John Wilkes Booth was a famous Shakespearean actor. Although it was illegal to be a Catholic in Shakespeare’s lifetime, the Anglican Archdeacon, Richard Davies of

2013

Lichfield, who had known him wrote some time after Shakespeare’s death that he had been a Catholic. Candles were very expensive in Shakespeare’s time so they were used only for emergencies, for a short time. Most writers wrote in the daytime and socialised in the evenings. There is no reason to think that Shakespeare was any different to his contemporaries. It was illegal for women and girls to perform in the theatre in Shakespeare’s lifetime so all the female parts were written for boys. The text of some plays like Hamlet and Antony and Cleopatra refer to that. It was only much later, during the Restoration, that the first woman appeared on the English stage.

he wrote about twenty that have gone without a trace. Shakespeare’s shortest play, The Comedy of Errors is only a third of the length of his longest, Hamlet, which takes four hours to perform. Two of Shakespeare’s plays, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing, have been translated into Klingon. The Klingon Language Institute plans to translate more!

‘William Shakespeare’ is an anagram of ‘I am a weakish speller’. Shakespeare’s original grave marker showed him holding a bag of grain. Citizens of Stratford replaced the bag with a quill in 1747.

There are only two Shakespeare plays written entirely in verse: they are Richard II and King John. Many of the plays have half of the text in prose. Shakespeare wrote many more plays than the ones we know about. It’s certain that he wrote a play titled Cardenio, which has been lost, but scholars think

Well designed indoor rooms tend to build off one element – a sofa, a piece of art or fireplace, therefore giving the eye something to land and focus on. The other pieces of furniture support that one vital piece. This same principle should be applied to outdoor living spaces also. Clever furniture arrangement is all it takes to establish a variety of uses in one outdoor living space. For example, in smaller settings place the dining table closer to a corner, enhancing what space you have, whilst with a larger setting, use different textures to break up the dining and relaxing areas. Unifying furnishings in a spectrum of colours, with accessories, such as pretty table settings and bright tableware, then adds the splashes of colour and vibrance which we all like to see in a garden. For example, an assortment of furniture can pull together a seating area when they share striped pillows or coloured scatter cushions, and with the added touch of an outdoor rug, then unifies the arrangement.

Summer is the perfect time to be outdoors. Fire up the barbecue and invite friends and neighbours over. Enjoy and use your outdoor space, choose durable furniture, pieces which are useful to you and accommodate your needs and that also withstands the Spanish climate.

For the summer evenings, your patio, garden needs personality. Whether to illuminate a dark space or add ambiance to your favourite seating area, outdoor lighting is that simple extra touch. Try and choose solar products or low-voltage, energy-efficient bulbs to conserve resources and protect the environment. And finally, enjoy the sounds of music in your garden, wind chimes, are a traditional, yet stylish part of the outdoor lifestyle. You can find wind chimes made from bamboo, teak, and stainless steel to create the windy, musical melody that best fits your home.

Outdoor dining is a real treat in the warm weather months, so we should take this Yours truly, opportunity to make it just that little bit Janice more special. Technology sponsored by Spacetop 3D Transparent desktop computer unveiled

A 3D see-through computer which lets you reach through your screen has been unveiled. Jinha Lee, a student at MIT, worked with Microsoft on the new concept machine. The SpaceTop 3D desktop allows users to literally reach “into” their computer, and move files and data with their hands. It uses a transparent LED screen, 3D graphics and camera-monitored gesture controls to create the illusion of a box behind the monitor. Users place their hands behind the screen to manipulate the icons and apps,

while a camera tracks their eye position and adjusts the angle, making it appear as though the box is really 3D. The idea was presented this week at the TED conference in California. “Programming the world will alter even our daily physical activities,” Lee said. “With our two hands we’re reaching into the digital world.” Lee told reporters it would let users pick up files and “flick them like a book”. He said on his website: It extends the traditional desktop interface with interaction technology and visualization techniques that enable seamless transitions between 2D and 3D manipulations. SpaceTop allows users to type, click, draw in 2D, and directly manipulate interface elements that float in the 3D space above the keyboard. The SpaceTop 3D computer is still in the early stages, and no consumer devices are currently planned. But like early concepts of iPhone-like touchscreens, which took the web by storm before their rapid commercial introduction, it might not be as long as you think.

I Robot?

A robot designed to help care for elderly people has been invented at the University of Salford. “Carebot” P37 S65 can be programmed to remind them to take medication and exercise, answer questions and even tell them jokes. Researcher Antonio Espingardeiro, who developed the robot, said it could help care home staff and improve residents’ quality of life. It can recognise faces and recall the requirements of each patient, he said. The robot can also be programmed with speech therapy and object recognition exercises to help people with dementia. It is capable of acting as a video link to keep in touch with doctors and family, playing games and giving updates on the news. The robot, standing at about the height of a person, can also carry meals to residents. Mr Espingardeiro is looking for investment to perfect the robot before selling it. He said: “Care of the elderly is a difficult

Google tracking

A Facebook engineer has revealed that the social networking company is working on a real life “like button that people can use to rate other people they meet. The engineer, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The technology is based on the QR codes that people will be required to stick on their forehead. The technology will be integrated into Facebook’s official applications on the iPhone, Android and other platforms. Users will just have to scan the QR code then press the appropriate icon in the app whether it be “like, “mute, or “share. The engineer didn’t have any information on Facebook planned on implementing muting or sharing, but said “it would be possible with HTML5. Future plans include integrating GPS radios into skulls and RFID chips under the skin for better tracking data to be used only by your friends or friends of friends or everyone depending on your privacy settings.

I may spend half my time back in Wales, but I’m never far from the Spanish influence, seeming to embark on more conversations en espanol over here, than when I’m in the motherland itself. The lifts in our building seem to be the place for bumping into new Spanish neighbours, where curiosidad often turns into preguntas y mas before the parting of the ways. (It’s a tall building!) The frequency of these meetings seems to be increasing. Even during the rescue of a young cat which had managed to crawl into the panelling outside the main doors, the first meeting with Porsche-driving, model -material Madrid

Chica Carolina began in Spanish (to the amusement of another very Welsh neighbour) as we tried to tempt it out. I’ve chatted to Swansea City players in the foyer in Spanish, (they live here too, when the mood takes them) years ago sold a printer completely in Spanish to yet another on loan player (to the amusement and amazement of the store manager) and have regular ‘to do’s’ with a waiter in a Spanish restaurant on why my Spanish isn’t ‘perfecto’ when I’ve spent over a decade going back and forth. ‘Too many English!’ I usually reply ‘how do you make Spanish friends when everyone is English?’ Shop, bank, beach and bar conversations rarely turn into friendships, and seldom pass the ten minute barrier before reverting back to English. I sometimes feel like I’ve moved across the Severn Bridge. So, with the football/Spanish influence large in my life (Swansea won the League Cup recently at Wembley) with the aid of a Michu) here’s an international little tale. Virgoman was queuing for the bus a few months ago, to take him up the Liberty Stadium to watch a match. Wearing his Athletico Madrid scarf, from a Madrid trip to watch them play Barcelona a couple of years ago, he was approached by a young Spaniard, asked if he himself was Spanish and if he could direct him to the stadium. Gregorio had ‘popped down’ from Cardiff to watch a

match. They travelled together, became Facebook friends, and shortly after were invited to go and see him and his orchestra (Royal Welsh college of Music) in concert at St David’s Hall. A wonderful afternoon, and for me a trip down memory lane as I used to play in my school orchestra, bringing a few tears and a quick calculation of decades passed. Gregorio was really pleased to have someone present, and that we’d taken the trouble to drive up there. But really, it was no trouble at all. It was a pleasure, especially with his grin and wave as he left the stage. Amazingly, he’s from just outside Albacete. Not that far away from Mazarron. So now, anytime I need a correction, I just tag in Gregorio. Sometimes, it’s even quicker than Google Translate, and certainly must be more authentic. So don’t feel too sorry for me whenever I’m over here in Swansea. I’m just about coping, honest.

Out & About

With Rod Sawyer Living in Bradford, Indian food is a favourite with us. Spain used to be a disappointment, when we first arrived ten years ago there were no local Indian restaurants but we did discover the Indian supermarket in Torre Pacheco. We indulged at home! Today there are now several, three on Camposol, and a couple in the port. Two on Camposol have changed hands and the third is now re-packaged. I must admit we were never fond of the one on Sector A, over priced and we felt very average. Sector B had Bolleywood and Bali Hi, now Quality and Nastame, the Hindu greeting. Both were passable! Quality came into being some time ago now and many, including Bob Owen and his wife as well as ourselves, count themselves as regulars. It is very good. On A, the restaurant has become Spice Villa. We had a takeaway the other week. It was excellent. They now have a full range of menus as well as a takeaway facility. Menu Del Dia’s at 5.95 and 9.95 makes them highly competitive. They are offering, chicken tikkas, onion bhajis and vegetable pakoras as tapas,

2013

but at 5 euros this is not so attractive. Their early bird menu is, at 12.50, you get two courses and a drink. This still makes Indian expensive in comparison with many other British and Spanish restaurants, but for those wedded to curries, a price worth paying for decent food. We had popadums and pickle, very fresh popadums and an interesting selection of restaurant produced pickles., followed by chicken tikka, channa masala, a chickpea curry, with an excellent mushroom rice and garlic nan. The tikka was succulent and spicy, the curry definitely top draw. We haven’t tried Nastame since its renaming but Indian food lovers from the area can all now have a real choice. The standards are now better than the ubiquitous Chinese restaurants! And Spice Villa (968199226) offers a home deliver service to Condada, Country Club and Camposol. I had my first trip out in late February. We went with friends one Saturday to Bolnuevo and visited Elliot’s. Monday to Saturday they offer and 9.95 Menu del Dia. Inclosing coffees this is good vale. Starters include a tuna salad, with plenty of tuna, very fresh, and Spring rolls with accompanying salad and dip, very much appreciated by three at our table. I went for the fish and chips, de-skinned and well done! I am always amazed at the Southern habit of keeping the skin on, and on how many restaurants say they cant de-skin! Its cod and the chips are good as well. One of us had the steak and kidney pudding which went down a treat and two had the smoked haddock. The dessert board included both lemon meringue pie, very tasty and cheesecake. The choice was excellent, too often a menu Del Dia looks cheap, and is cheap! Usually with a very limited range of food. The service was lovely and prompt, which given that the restaurant was crowded, was good news. Afterwards we went port wards to the new Lara’s Bar. Lara has of course closed down on Camposol. Apparently the rents became too much! It’s dead easy to find, simply take the left hand road at the Barclays roundabout in the port, just past Mercadona, go to the bottom by the sea, turn right and it is about the third restaurant along, with plenty of adjacent parking. You can sit outside under a canopy, with outside heating! As well as huge helpings of

2013

cakes, the menu is much like it was, with chicken and chips, a 12.50 steak, egg and chips, 14 Euros for fillet! A range of tapas which can be had as raciones, and of course Lara as host. It has great views across the bay and when we went for coffee, about 4pm, it was crowded with Brits and Spanish. It has pizza at 5 Euros! You are warned, helpings are huge! In fact many do a one for two! Certainly on my diet, we could have shared. From the look of other patrons, it is as successful as Laras was on Camposol and Copa D’Ora was in Mazarron. One thing that does make it special is that it is one of the few places, along with Seventh Heaven on the new Paseo which has always indulged those who enjoy a decent bit of cake with their coffee, where you can get a good selection of stand alone dessert! We have had a midday meal there since, had a huge plate of calamari to share, shared a chicken and chips with two eggs, and had a to die for raspberry cheesecake, again to share, drinks and coffee, all for 23 Euros the two of us. Didn’t eat again that day! Lara is such a hospitable guy, the perfect mine host! Whilst about it Tel’s has re-opened after re-furbishment, nicely decorated and new furniture. Tel’s has always been a favourite watering hole, was the first bar we went into on Camposol. Leanne now runs it and has maintained its friendly ambiance. It’s always offered a decent Sunday lunch, and we both love their chicken curry with rice/chips! Rod Sawyer

Clam, chorizo & white bean stew

INGREDIENTS 50g chorizo , diced 1 onion , finely chopped 1 garlic clove , crushed small bunch flat-leaf parsley , ½ finely chopped, ½ roughly chopped 200ml hot stock , fish or vegetable 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can butter beans or white beans, rinsed and drained 1 tsp sherry vinegar 600g clams , cleaned crusty bread , to serve

Fry the chorizo in a large frying pan with a lid, over a medium heat until it is starting to crisp up and release its oil. Add the onion and cook for 5 mins until starting to soften. Then add the garlic and finely chopped parsley, and fry for 1 min more. Pour on the stock and tomatoes. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, then add the beans and sherry vinegar. Simmer for 10 mins until the liquid is slightly reduced. Scatter over the clams, cover with the lid and steam for 2-4 mins, shaking the pan occasionally until the clams are open. Have a little taste before seasoning, as the clams can be quite salty. Then scatter over the chopped parsley. Eat with lots of crusty bread.

The Chairman and group secretary Joce Grant, had a meeting with the mayor of Camposol, Jose Navarro, where the subject of the bus shelters was discussed he agreed that there should be shelters, he then completed the appropriate forms , which the chairman submitted to the town hall, the next day. Another bit of good news, is the shed, has now become “ The Book Shop “ thanks to the generosity of , Luz Del Sol,

who provided the new book shop sign, The March meeting,[for which I must apologise for the starting time confusion ] was again very well attended was held in The Vista Bar, to who we give our thanks .One of the first items, was the main project for 2013, Welcome Signs, at each entrance to Los Palacios ,at this stage the Chairman, was able to show the meeting a suitable design. For which there was much enthusiasm. It was pointed out that the date for the next meeting April 1st, is a bank holiday, therefore it will be on Wednesday April, 3rd, 10 o,clock , at the Vista Bar. Phew! Our ration of ‘red’ rain took a lot of clearing up this month but was very welcome as far as the newly planted trees and shrubs go. Flood waters were cleared from the Rambla road towards the bridge and by the time this appears in print, the bitter winds, frost(!), and the clearing of mud and sand will be just a distant memory…but the plants will have had another month of much drier weather to contend with, so if you can spare any time and water to help those near your villa, it will be much appreciated! The ‘Welcome to C’ wall feature is looking lovely after being weeded and improved by new planting, and this month sees more of our tidying up of kerbs and pavement repairs after Aqualia fix the numerous bursts (but just leave the soil and blocks in a pile nearby!!!). Together with the cleaning of our streets this really has improved our sector this Spring. The weed spraying programme has been postponed until the high winds pass but we will have caught up by the time this goes to press - Without the maintenance team on Mondays and our dedicated volunteers who turn out every Wednesday, this work simply wouldn’t get done and the pavements and roads would once more be overgrown with weeds as in the past, so if you are interested in joining Green Fingers you would be very welcome! Our volunteers meet every Wednesday morning at the Sensol Villas offices (old Masa hoiuse) on the dual carriageway and have a breakfast break with free bacon or sausage butties as a bonus!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all who regularly support the maintenance scheme each month with a special mention for Greg Green from Sensol Villas and Drew Ryder for their particular generosity, and to all of those who kindly donate a little to our bucket when they see us out and about. There are so many ways you can help Bespoke Garden Design and Maintenance us even if you can’t afford a monetary donation; our volunteers are always grateful for drinks For all aspects of Garden maintenance and design and we are happy to call 679582410 for a free no obligation quote. have your unwanted

Processionary pine caterpillars

Over the last month or so we have been getting several calls and e-mails from people regarding instances where animals and humans have come into contact with the ubiquitous processionary pine caterpillars that are found round these parts. While many of us have lived here

for many years and are familiar with the species, and of course the fact that they are to be avoided, we have decided to print this article to just to remind people what a health hazard they can be to pets and humans. Processionary pine caterpillars (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) can be found coming our of pine trees in a conspicuous snake like line. Generally they will not be far from a pine tree, but that does not mean that you will only see them in large pine woods, they are just as likely to be found in villages and road side plantings in fact wherever pine trees are present. One of the first signs to be aware of is their white silken nests attached to a branch tip, these become most obvious around December to March. (These caterpillars are known as ‘procesionaria del pino’ in Spanish). As a moth it has no means of causing us harm, it is only during its development as a caterpillar that you need to be cautious of this small creature. The moths seek out pine trees in the warm summer nights, lay clusters of eggs on the pine needles and

so the process begins. There are 5 instars or growth stages to these caterpillars, where they gorge on pine needles, shed their skins and double in size. This growth occurs during the winter when they disperse through the tree at night to feed, thereby avoiding predation, and collect in communal nests by day to increase their warmth and ability to digest. Note that the white candyfloss like nests are cleverly positioned for maximum sunshine. By February these nests can be looking a bit dishevelled, this is because a nest may hold around 300 caterpillars and with no single entrance hole they push their way through the layers, the green bits collecting at the base and falling to the ground beneath are excrement. The time for them to leave the nest in preparation for the next part of their lifecycle varies with temperature, spanning from January in warmer areas to April in the cool of the mountains, with a few even falling from the trees during windy weather. It is as they leave the trees that most people and pets come into contact with the caterpillars, sometimes with very painful consequences. They are the only caterpillar here to form a long chain, touching nose to tail. This snakelike procession is a real giveaway as to their identity. The line may stretch for a metre or two but if disturbed there could

be several smaller groups and scattered individuals. (Each being around 3 to 4cm long). They have gone through a long feeding phase and will now search for a suitable place to burrow underground where they will undergo major changes, from caterpillar through to a moth without nourishment. The danger that they pose to humans and animals is a very simple defence mechanism designed to stop them from becoming a meal themselves. Each caterpillar is covered with tiny barbed hairs, it is these which do us harm. They are constantly being dropped throughout its time as a caterpillar. They are too tiny to see, but cover the branches of the tree where the creatures have been feasting and of course the nests are loaded with them. They are even in the air around a heavily infested tree. Direct contact with the Processionary Caterpillar colonies as they disperse can easily be avoided once you are aware of what to look out for. Inquisitive children, adults and pets must not get too close - it is even said that treading on them has lead to a reaction, as the hairs caught on your shoe can come into contact with your skin at a latter hour.

When humans come into contact with these hairs, they can cause reactions ranging from mild inflammation and irritation to severe anaphylactic shock. If the hairs contact your skin a rash soon forms which can be incredibly itchy, painful and lasts for as much as three weeks. The worst problems occur if you make contact with the caterpillar directly and ingest the hairs. If you get any reaction from contact with these insects medical advice should be sought. Veterinary services have many emergency calls at the time when the caterpillars are migrating to the ground as dogs can get too close to the intriguing procession and may pick up the hairs onto their paws, these irritate and so they lick them. Once the hairs are on the lips/tongue it will induce itching, swelling and possibly vomiting. Look out for the symptoms of : small white spots in the mouth and on the tongue, excessive drooling and chomping. Be aware and be vigilant, and hopefully you will avoid a trip to the doctors or a hefty veterinary bill.

Wellbeing

Local Yoga teacher Lisa has a studio in Isla Plana and has classes for all abilities. To start i would like to thank you for your emails following my recent articles in the magazine. As i have already mentioned yoga is a way of Life a system of education for the body, mind and Inner spirit but to confirm it is not a religion. Whilst it has its roots in India and therefore many students are of the Hindhu faith it is universal. Its techniques may be practiced by Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Muslims and atheists alike.Yoga is union with all and has no religous boundaries. (????? is that the right word boundaries????) Unfortunatley i can not give Yoga Asanas/ Postures in the magazine to help with Lower back aches, Cramping calf muscles and that all to often trapped sciatic nerve. As i am sure you can appreciate, these items need to be treated hands on, as there is always the possibility of creating more tension and making the situation worse. However i have included a few tension releasing exersizes for that unfortunatley ever increasing tension headache.

Headaches There are many reasons why the headaches, one of the most common reasons is tension. If your headaches are created by tension then read on for some simple tension releasing exersizes. Treatment using conventional medicines like ibuprofen and paracetamol as i have said before cures the headache but they only deal with the symptons and not the causes. A number of problems can bring on a tension headache including bad posture, muscle fatigue, sinus infection, emotional upset, high blood pressure and more. However some migrains are triggered by food allergies or sensitivity to chemicals among other things. Headaches can be a warning sign to show us that the body has other underlying health issues, so if your headache is not brought on by tension you should seek proffesional medical help. Although it may seem with some information that i am repeating myself!! it is so important that we listen to our bodies.

page 34

Awareness of the bodies emotions and stresses can help detect the starting of a headache and stop it before it starts to flare. One of the most common causes of a headache is the head jutting forward, with rounded shoulders, a curved upper back and a growing musculature tension!. The first symptons of a headache in most people are the tightening of the muscles in the shoulders and neck (although most do not notice this change in the muscle). The contraction of these muscles causes a reduction in blood flow to the vessels of the head, resulting in a headache. In opening the space between the shoulder blades and stretching the shoulders themselves the tension can be released and blood flows freely again. Repeating the following exersizes several times aday can prevent tension in the shoulders and neck and prevent those tension headaches. Sit squarely on a chair with feet comfortably on the floor. Place left hand, palm down, under left buttock (fingers facing inwards). Tilting (not turning) your head to the right (right ear to right shoulder, chin pulled in), bring your right hand up and over your head. Spread the fingers of the right hand and cup over the left ear. The weight of your right forearm lays over the crown of the head (there is a pulling sensation sometimes uncomfortable in the beginning) The stretch should extend from the base of the skull down to the shoulder. Stand tall extending the top of the head up .. pull the chin in eyes on the horizon. Bring both hands to the crown of the head (finger tips at the back of the skull, litle fingers next to each other, elbows facing forward ) Bring the head forward using the weight of the arms (do not pull the head). Use this stretch to open the muscles in the back of the neck and adjust the forward head position.

circles can also help release the space inbetween the shoulder blades, as can slow soft neck movements. Move the head gently turning side to side and forward and back. BUT be careful not to rotate your head in circles. The top vertabrae in the spine which supports the skull moves in only a few directions. Rolling the neck goes against the natural motion of this vertabrae and can actually cause damage. In the throws of a headache, we can easily be overcome by pain. Feeling anxious and out of control which in turn can make you feel the pain more as we attach to the discomfort. Instead of attaching to the pain try sitting quietly, eyes closed. Start to observe your breath, your inhale and your exhale. You can place the hands on to the abdomen turning your awareness inwards. After several minutes of observing the breath try to make the breath smooth and regular. Without hurrying guide your breath from a naturally rough and rugged state to a smooth and even rhythm. Try to imagine a block of ice or an ice sculpture which is slowly melting away. That way the pain slowly drips out of the body, slowly dissapears. Rather than holding on it is the opposite we are letting go and releasing the pain. The methods I have mentioned are tools to use and if one does not work try another and then another until you find what does. Be willing to experiment and discover a new approach that works for you. HEALTH ADVICE FROM CAMPOSOL PHARMACY: OSTEOPOROSIS

The need to take care of your bones every day

What is osteoporosis? Bone is not a lifeless body structure. It is made of living and dynamic tissue, containing proteins, calcium salts and other minerals. Normally, there is a careful balance between the building up of new bone and breaking down of old bone, both natural processes regulated by numerous factors. This equilibrium keeps bones healthy, strong, hard and resistant to fracture. When more bone is

broken down than is replaced, the bones’ internal structure becomes thinner. As a consequence, bones become more fragile and break (fracture) easily. This weakening of the bone, which can cause painful and debilitating fractures following a minor bump or fall, is the condition known as osteoporosis (literally meaning ‘porous bones’). In general, the loss of bone mass which leads to osteoporosis is gradual, over years. There are really no symptoms to detect it. Thin, fragile bones in themselves are not painful.Very often people who suffer from it experience a bone fracture before even realizing they have this

2013

condition. This is why osteoporosis has been described as ‘the silent disease’. Bone fractures due to osteoporosis can occur in any part of the body. However, wrists, hips and spine are most commonly affected. Broken vertebrae (compression fractures) can cause, as well as pain, loss of height and spinal curvature. Nevertheless, the presence of osteoporosis does not always mean that a bone will break; it means that there is a greater risk of fracture. According to world statistics from the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), at least one in three women and one in five men over 50 years old will suffer a fracture mainly caused by bone weakness. In Spain, osteoporosis affects more than 2.5 million women and 750000 men.

important weight loss. High risk of falling Fall in the last year (high risk) Long periods of immobility Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine, smoking Deficient calcium and vitamin D intake without any supplements and lacking sun exposure (vitamin D deficiency) Low levels of oestrogens in women: early menopause, hysterectomy with removal of ovaries (before age of 45), anorexia nervosa, breast cancer medication such as aromatase inhibitors Low levels of testosterone in men following surgery or treatment for some cancers Rheumatoid arthritis Conditions affecting the absorption of food such as Chron’s or coeliac disease

What causes osteoporosis? There are two forms of osteoporosis: primary and secondary. Primary osteoporosis is very closely associated with advanced age. It is the result of the physiological loss of bone mass which takes place as we get older. Up to our mid-20s new bone is added faster than old bone is removed, strengthening our young skeleton. Peak bone mass (maximum bone density and strength) is reached around age 30. Unfortunately, from this age onwards, the situation reverses naturally and bone destruction slowly starts to outpace bone formation, causing bone density gradually to decrease. This first type affects both genders. The loss of bone is linked to an estrogen deficiency in women and a testosterone deficiency in men. However, women after menopause are much more likely to suffer from it because they have smaller bones, hence lower total bone mass, and they experience a greater loss of hormones at this stage of their lives. Secondary osteoporosis is caused by certain diseases (metabolic, rheumatoid, gastrointestinal, kidney, cancer) and medicines (treatment with glucocorticoids for over 3 months, aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer). Factors that increase risk of osteoporosis and fractures: Genes. First degree family history of hip fracture (high risk). Age. Over 65 years old (high risk). Race. Caucasian or Asian are at a higher risk than black Afrocaribbean because their bones are smaller and weaker. Previous fragility fractures (hip, humerus, wrist, spine). Low body weight. Low Body Mass Index (below 20kg/m2) or

What can I do to improve my bone health? Even though our genes largely determine the size and strength of our skeleton, our lifestyle can also influence the quality of our bones. There is plenty you can do to try to keep you bones as healthy as possible! Eat a healthy balanced diet. This is essential to provide all the vitamins, minerals and

other nutrients that your bones need. Try to include in your meals a wide variety of 1) fruits and vegetables, 2) carbohydrates: bread, potatoes, pasta and cereals, 3) milk and dairy products and 4) protein: meat, fish, eggs, pulses, nuts and seeds. Increase your calcium intake. Calcium gives teeth and bones strength and rigidity. Most people should be able to get enough calcium just through a healthy diet, without need for supplements. The daily recommended dose of calcium for adults (over 19 years old) is 700 mg, although osteoporosis patients taking drug treatments might need up to 1000 mg a day. Recommendable foods with high calcium content include: Dairy products: milk (skimmed, semiskimmed or whole), milk soya, cheese, yoghurt. Fat free dairy products have as much as full fat ones. Fish: whitebait, sardines, pilchards, tinned salmon. Green leafy vegetables: watercress, curly kale, okra stir, spring greens. Pulses, beans and seeds: red kidney beans, sesame seeds, tofu. Cereals: white bread, wholemeal bread, muesli. Dried fruit: figs, apricots.

Get enough vitamin D.Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, keeps muscles strong and helps prevent falls in the elderly. We manufacture this vitamin in our skin by the action of sunlight. Adults only require 10 minutes of sun exposure to face and arms once or twice a day without sunscreen, always taking care to avoid skin problems. A normal diet only provides 10% of the vitamin D you can get from sun. Avoid excessive salt intake. High salt levels increase calcium elimination through urine. Do plenty of regular weight-bearing exercise (find the exercise you enjoy!). You should try to do any kind of physical activity where you must support the weight of your own body (jogging, aerobics, tennis, dancing, brisk walking) for 30 minutes at least five days a week. It is also positive to include at least twice a week activities that help to improve muscle strength, balance and coordination (swimming, gardening, golf) as this reduces the risk of falling. If you are at high risk of suffering fractures, you may need to avoid vigorous, high-impact exercise and bending. Stop smoking. Tobacco has a direct toxic effect on bone, reducing bone formation. Reduce your alcohol intake. Excessive alcohol intake can cause bone damage, worsening osteoporosis and increasing fracture risk. Avoid falls. Use comfortable, anti-slip shoes. Eliminate potential obstacles at home (carpets, etc.) and ensure adequate lighting. Use walking aids if necessary. Be careful with medicines that can make you drowsy. If you have any doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice to minimize fall risk. Drug treatments Osteoporosis drug treatments are prescribed individually for each patient depending on factors such as age, sex, medical history and previous bone fractures. All treatments have a triple aim: a) add strength to existing bone, 2) help prevent further bone loss and 3) reduce risk of fractures. Bisphosphonates. These are the most commonly prescribed drugs to treat osteoporosis. The main drugs in this group are alendronate, cyclical etidronate, risedronate, ibandronate and zoledronic acid. They reduce the risk of broken bones in the spine, and in some cases, the hip. They act by slowing down the rate of bone loss, without affecting hormone levels. Raloxifene. It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It simulates the bone protector effect of oestrogens in the female organism and, simultaneously, blocks the oestrogens’ effect on other organs, such as the womb and breast. It is only prescribed to women to reduce the risk of spinal fractures as an alternative to bisphosphonates. Strontium ranelate. It appears to affect both cells that build and break down bone. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment. Only prescribed by specialists in specific cases of severe spinal fractures.

page 36

Denosumab. A monoclonal human antibody which blocks a substance involved in bone development that stimulates the activity of the cells that break down bone. Calcium and vitamin D. Supplements given when intake within the diet is not enough to ensure bone protection. Less commonly used treatments: calcitonin, calcitriol and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women and men. If you are taking osteoporosis medication remember that, as with all other drug treatments, it is really important for you to take it exactly as prescribed in order to obtain the maximum benefit from it. For any doubt that may arise about this disease or its treatment contact a health professional. Author: Camposol Pharmacy Team (M. Fernández Álvarez)

Top 10 Health Benefits of Drinking Tea

1. Tea contains antioxidants. Like the Hammerite paint that keeps your outdoor furniture from rusting, tea’s antioxidants protect your body from the ravages of aging and the effects of pollution. 2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee. Coffee usually has two to three times the caffeine of tea. An eight-ounce cup of coffee contains around 135 mg caffeine; tea contains only 30 to 40 mg per cup. If drinking coffee gives you the jitters, causes indigestion or headaches or interferes with sleep -- switch to tea. 3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Unwanted blood clots formed from cholesterol and blood platelets cause heart attack and stroke. Drinking tea may help keep your arteries smooth and clog-free, the same way a drain keeps your bathroom pipes clear. A 5.6-year study from the Netherlands found a 70 percent lower risk of fatal heart attack in people who drank at least two to three cups of black tea daily compared to non-tea drinkers.

www.thecamposoljournal.com

4. Tea protects your bones. It’s not just the milk added to tea that builds strong bones. One study that compared tea drinkers with non-drinkers, found that people who drank tea for 10 or more years had the strongest bones, even after adjusting for age, body weight, exercise, smoking and other risk factors. The authors suggest that this may be the work of tea’s many beneficial phytochemicals. 5. Tea gives you a sweet smile. One look at the grimy grin of Austin Powers and you may not think drinking tea is good for your teeth, but think again. It’s the sugar added to it that’s likely to blame for a bad dental record. Tea itself actually contains fluoride and tannins that may keep plaque at bay. So add unsweetened tea drinking to your daily dental routine of brushing and flossing for healthier teeth and gums. 6. Tea bolsters your immune defenses. Drinking tea may help your body’s immune system fight off infection. When 21 volunteers drank either five cups of tea or coffee each day for four weeks, researchers saw higher immune system activity in the blood of the tea drinkers. 7. Tea protects against cancer. Thank the polyphenols, the antioxidants found in tea, once again for their cancer-fighting effects. While the overall research is inconclusive, there are enough studies that show the potential protective effects of drinking tea to make adding tea to your list of daily beverages. 8. Tea helps keep you hydrated. Caffeinated beverages, including tea, used to be on the list of beverages that didn’t contribute to our daily fluid needs. Since caffeine is a diuretic and makes us pee more, the thought was that caffeinated beverages couldn’t contribute to our overall fluid requirement. However, recent research has shown that the caffeine really doesn’t matter -- tea and other caffeinated beverages definitely contribute to our fluid needs. The only time the caffeine becomes a problem as far as fluid is concerned is when you drink more than five or six cups of a caffeinated beverage at one time Final del formulario 9. Tea is calorie-free. Tea doesn’t have any calories, unless you add sugar or milk. Consuming even 250 fewer calories per day can result in losing half a kilo per week. If you’re looking for a satisfying, calorie-free beverage, tea is a top choice. 10. Tea increases your metabolism. Lots of people complain about a slow metabolic rate and their inability to lose weight. Green tea has been shown to actually increase metabolic rate so that you can burn 70 to 80 additional calories by drinking just five cups of green tea per day. Of course, taking a 15-minute walk every day will also burn calories much more effectively.

How KERS works

Aston Martin Aston Martin is currently developing a facelifted version

of the Aston Martin Rapide for the 2013 model year. Rumoured to be a Rapide S, the car was recently captured by an eagle-eyed photographer in Barcelona where the new Rapide model is believed to have been in the process of being photographed for its official launch. The most notable difference in the 2013 Aston Martin Rapide S compared to the outgoing car is its new one-piece front grille which is reminiscent of the V12 Zagato’s front grille. Although it’s hard to see in the following photo, the man behind the spy shot claims that the headlights and bumpers have also undergone minor styling tweaks in line with the updated Aston Martin styling language. It’s currently unclear when the 2013 Aston Martin Rapide S will launch, but a debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March is likely.

Ferrari hybrid !!! Ferrari adapted a Formula 1 racing technology to produce a hybrid supercar that uses a bit less fuel, emits fewer grams of CO2 and, oh by the way,

accelerates to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. The Ferrari LaFerrari captures excess power under braking or when the engine produces a surplus of power

(which you might say is “always”) to a battery pack and then to two electric motors. One provides boost to the V12 gasoline engine and the other drives accessories. LaFerrari’s HY-KERS (hybrid kinetic energy recovery system) system runs along with the engine, never on its own, so it is technically considered a mild hybrid, just like the Honda Civic and Chevrolet Malibu. LaFerrari, also known as the F70 and F150, was introduced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Along with the Frankfurt Auto Show that happens only in odd years, they’re the world’s biggest auto shows. This year’s auto show was a celebration of high-performance cars and green cars, or a twofer in Ferrari’s case, as well as mainstream cars for European and world markets.

page 38

www.thecamposoljournal.com

Hybrid technology is all about capturing and recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted. The Toyota Prius family is the best example in the passenger car realm with active hybrid technology that lets the vehicle run a mile or two on battery before the gasoline engine kicks in. In the racing world, KERS adds power on top of what the combustion engine produces, just like a turbocharger boosts acceleration. Two exotic methods include spinning up a flywheel under braking or transferring the power to ultracapacitors (supercapacitors). Both are good for five to 10 seconds of boost, either because that’s all the storage systems hold, or because the sanctioning body limits the driver to a fixed amount of boost per lap. Ferrari diverts the energy to a pair of battery packs bolted to the carbon fiber frame of the vehicle. One is for the propulsion system while the second provides power to electrically driver accessories that could include the radiator fan, windshield wipers, air conditioning, or the audio system when you crank it up to 11. Usually there’s a limit to how quickly you can push power into a battery pack. Ferrari says it can charge the battery even under full braking that activates ABS. The engine can also charge the battery directly, just as mainstream cars do through their alternators. The electric motor outputs 120 kW or 163 hp on top of the engine’s 800 hp. Top speed is 217 mph or 350 kph. Environmental gains are modest: LaFerrari emits 330 grams of CO2 per kilometer in the European emissions testing cycle, about 10% less than a current Ferrari V12. A prototype that can run on battery power reduces LaFerrari’s emissions to 220 grams per kilometer. Ferrari says LaFerrari isn’t an active hybrid (Prius-like) because that’s not part of the car’s mission, currently. There’s a lot of complaints about pollution from supercars, although it’s also limited by small production volumes and limited driving. Many Ferraris see only 3,000 miles a year added to the odometer.

2013

The price will be an estimated 1 million euros ($1.3 million) and production will be 499 units. Ferrari says it will vet the list of would-be buyers, currently at 700plus, in hopes of delivering the cars to enthusiasts rather than speculators. It’s a successor to the Ferraro Enzo supercar.

Property, Financial and Legal YOU BUYING IN SPAIN ??? So many people plan for a long time to buy their dream home in Spain – in a sense they think of it as the “promised land” but is it that? Property values are so attractive in this region in comparison with others in Spain – but could there be problems lurking in the background which will shatter our bubble of dreams?? The process of buying a house in Spain is fundamentally quite different to the process in the UK. In Spain, it is possible to buy without obtaining detailed legal advice and some buyers unfortunately end up in the Notary’s office to sign documents and then discovering that there are serious issues with their “dream house” they are anxious to purchase. On the other hand, in the UK it is not possible to purchase without both the Seller and the Buyer being individually represented by Solicitors. In addition, the conveyancing procedure is governed by the Law Society Regulations, under which a contract is signed which is legally binding and enforceable by either party. There is also the added fact that there is one Land Registry which governs the whole of England & Wales.

My friend “Prudence” says that anyone buying a property here in Spain should have access to as much information as possible about the property ie. the legal title for a start, plus if necessary and other information regarding the liabilities of the property and, in fact, any issues which will affect the buyer once they have taken over ownership. As part of my services, I carry out such investigations to appraise the buyer before steps are then taken to legally formalise the transaction. In some cases it is beneficial for a meeting with the client before the Notary, before that all important document the Escritura is signed on the day of completion.

We are all familiar with the word “tax” in Spain and in a property transaction there are a few taxes to be considered ie IBI (Council tax), plus valia tax on the sale of a property, Stamp Duty, non residents tax or fiscal residency as appropriate – if it moves, its taxed - you can be sure of that! So, if your on the walkabout or driveabout looking for a new abode and want to take the next step, give me a call if you would like me to embark upon my investigations to find out all the information you need to be aware of and to assist you with your chosen property,

Spanish Banking System “One of the strongest in Europe” The Spanish banking system is one of the strongest in Europe.” Says William Murray the deputy spokesman of the International Monetary Fund who has assessed the strength of the banking system as a whole following the 2012 Bankia loss of 19.1billion euros. “When we do assessments of a country’s banking system we do not examine a particular entity, but the very system itself,” said the spokesman of the international organization. IMF staff, who visited Spain for the second time in late January to oversee the implementation of the bailout of the financial sector , highlighted at the end of the evaluation the “great progress”

in implementing banking reforms, but warned of the persistent risks to the Spanish economy and, therefore, for the country’s financial sector. On the other hand, referring to the recent Italian elections, the IMF representative expressed the need for all countries to maintain fiscal consolidation efforts at a rate that will sustain them over time. “Italy is an example, that in recent years has made significant progress,” said Murray without addressing the potential instability that might result from the election results.

Gibraltar no longer a tax haven? Bad relations between Spain and Gibraltar prevent the British colony from sharing tax information and other financial data with Madrid as it does with other European nations, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said

in an interview. Nevertheless, Picardo, who was elected 2011, explained that Gibraltar is no longer a haven for tax dodgers because “that model doesn’t fit in with today’s Europe.” “We are ready to reach an agreement for an exchange of information but unfortunately Spain doesn’t want to accept that Gibraltar has the jurisdiction to sign such an agreement when that authority should be delegated to Great Britain,” Picardo explained. The 41-year-old leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party bemoaned the fact that Spain’s ruling Popular Party has “refused to comply with the agreements” hammered out in the tripartite forum between the previous

Property, Financial and Legal Spanish administration, Gibraltar and Britain. One of these treaties prevents Andalusian fishermen from trawling near the waters of the British colony, which are not recognized by Spain, he said. Trawling is illegal in Gibraltar. Picardo claims that Gibraltar’s economy has grown between five and 10 percent without having to adjust spending or introduce other austerity measures. “Why? It’s not because Gibraltar knows how to do things better than anyone else, but because we are a small economy. So when we see something going wrong, it is easy to adjust.” The chief minister also rejects the idea that his colony has to depend on Britain for revenue, claiming that it is selfsufficient. “Gibraltar doesn’t ask for one penny from Britain.” When asked about Gibraltar’s reputation as a tax haven, Picardo said: “That’s all over. It is an old model which does not have any place in today’s Europe, or even today’s world.”

Spanish Economy Shrinks The Spanish economy shrank by 1.4% in 2012 as the recession worsened. In the final quarter of 2012, production fell by 4.7% due to a fall in domestic demand, although exports grew by 2.8% over the quarter. News showing the overall deficit of Spain’s 17 regions was just as depressing, at 1.73% of GDP in 2012, with the target fixed at 1.5% of GDP. Five regions, including Catalonia and Andalucía, have missed their individual targets. Meanwhile, new figures published last week by Spain’s National Statistics Office (INE) show that unit labour cost in Spain fell by 5.8% during the last quarter of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011 – by far the sharpest reduction in the euro-zone and the EU. Separately, Spanish bailed-out bank Bankia has confirmed losses of €19.2bn last year. This is the worst performance ever for a Spanish company. The unacceptable deficits in those five

regions – Andalucía, Murcia, Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearics – will need to see fresh cuts in their spending, said the Minister for Hacienda and Local Administrations, Cristóbal Montoro.

PALS EVENTS 2013 o what’s been going on this month in the wonderful world of S Andrea’s Animal Rescue! Heidi, the lovely girl picked up from Calasparra last month, is doing well. She is now on 4 different eye drops and skin creams galore in an effort to ease her discomfort with the Leishmania. We are hoping to be able to offer Heidi a brand new treatment for this, but it’s very expensive. It’s being touted as a new cure and is customised for each affected dog. A skin scraping has been taken from Heidi, and sent to a laboratory in Madrid, where they will design a serum just for her! We are having an online auction to raise funds at the moment, and it’s going very well! We’ll let you know how much we raised next month and how the treatment is going. We have ‘acquired’ 2 baby tortoise!! They are so tiny!! We are still looking for appropriate names for them if anyone has any suggestions. And a pigeon nesting in the log store has hatched 2 eggs - we’re becoming a real animal sanctuary!! No adoption news this month, but there are a couple on the horizon - more news next time! We received a fantastic donation from Angela Smith recently dog beds, dog coats, treats, blankets and lots of goodies for the shop!! Wonderful lady, thank you so much!! Our first online auction finished on the 14th February and we raised €2,525 all together!! AMAZING!! Thank you everyone who donated, bid and supported us! We will definitely be having another later in the year. We have 2 more dogs for re-homing this month - please meet Joal and Bingo! For more info on these 2 beauties please contact Andrea on 690906565. Also available are the lovely Casper, Leroy and Domino, to name but a few! We also picked up a new 3-week old puppy from a box placed under a car (!), who we have named Toby. He is being bottle-fed by Andrea at the moment, how wonderful to be a ‘Mum’ again, all those sleepless nights!! The awful winds have caused us problems and repairs are underway - donations as always gratefully accepted via PayPal to andreasanimalrescuemurcia@hotmail.com. Please join us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andreas-AnimalRescue-The-Henrietta-Foundation/ Thanks for reading! Andrea

One day a golfer accidentally overturned his buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, ...”Are you okay, what’s your name?” “It’s John, and I’m OK thanks,” he replied. “John forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll help you get the buggy up later.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” John answered, “but I don’t think my wife would like it.” “Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive. “Well okay,” John finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.” After a restorative brandy, and some driving and putting lessons, John thanked his hostess. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.” “Don’t be silly!” Elizabeth said with a smile , “She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?” “Under the buggy!” he explained

A man was at a grave yard.

Three men die and are sitting at heavens gate. The angel asks the first man, so what were you like ? He replies, ‘oh i was a really good husband, never cheated on my wife, looked after my kids, gave to charity.’ The angel replies ‘well, you can have a rolls royce’ The angel then turns to the second man. he says ‘ i was quite a good husband, cheated a few times, bit of an alcoholic, but i never killed anyone’. the angel says,’ ‘In that case, you can have a ford focus.’ The third man then says ‘i was a lousy husband, never did a good thing in my life, a complete looser’ the angel gives him a bicycle. later the two men with the ford and bicycle, see the man with a rolls royce crying his eyes out on a park bench. ‘ whats the problem ?’ they ask. ‘ i just saw my wife on a skateboard ‘, he replies.

I stopped at a friend’s house the other day and found him stalking around with a fly-swatter. When I asked if he was getting any flies, he answered: ‘Yeah, three males and two females.’ Curious, I asked how he could tell the difference. He said: ‘Three were on a beer can and two were on the phone.

He began to moan “Why did you die oh why did you have to die?” A passer by knelt down next to the man and said “Was this person very close to you?” “No, actually I never met him!” replied the man “Why are you moaning then?” asked the passer-by curiously. “He was my wife’s first husband!”

A penguin walks into a shop and asks the assistant: 'Do you have any grapes?' 'No,' he replies. The same thing happens the next day and on the third day the assistant replies: 'No, and if you come in asking for grapes again I will nail your flippers to the floor! ' Next day the penguin walks in and asks: 'Got any nails?' 'No,' replies the assistant. 'Got any grapes?' the penguin asks. An engaged couple were talking to a priest about the possibility of getting married in his church. "You two look like fine young lovers, and I would be happy to marry you, but first you must prove your loyalty to one another by abstaining from sex for a month." The couple agreed and they all planned to meet up again in a month. The first two weeks went by without incident, but during the third week, the young man returned to the priest. "I’m so sorry, I failed to control my desires and I could not remain abstinent. My girl friend dropped a paint can and bent over to pick it up and , unable to resist any longer, I had my way with her right then and there. I’m terribly sorry." "That’s alright, my son" the priest said. "We are not infallible and we sometimes make mistakes. There is no harm done." The man sighed and said, "well other than the fact we’re banned from B & Q for life now."

Sir Alex Ferguson... 1000 games, 598 wins, A man goes to the doctor and says: 1863 goals, ‘Doctor, there’s a piece of lettuce 2027 points, sticking out of my bottom.’ The doctor 12 titles... asks him to drop his trousers and 1 coat. examines him. The man asks: ‘Is it serious, doctor?’ and the doctor replies: ‘I’m sorry to tell you, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.’
