JOURNAL
THE Dear Readers,
Welcome to the April edition of The Journal! The April edition is always the one time of the year when we really have a lot of fun putting the magazine together for you. April Fools Day gives us a licence to print some fun stories and tall tales purely for your entertainment. Alongside some of the farfetched yarns, we also print some completely true stories that sound so ridiculous that one would be forgiven for thinking they were an April Fool. We will leave it you, our readers, to work out and if you are unsure drop us an email and we will let you know if it is true or false. Last year we printed an April Fool article about a giant Ferris Wheel that was under construction at the site of the proposed Paramount Theme Park in Alhama. It received, let us just say “mixed” reviews from our readers. While the majority could tell that it was a hoax, others ventured out in search of this nonexistent, gargantuan fairground ride that towered over the skies, so big that it could be seen from outer space. If you missed the article, it can be found on our website www. thejournal.es by looking at our previous editions. Hopefully, this year none of our stories will have people out orienteering across the Spanish plains, they have been written only for your fun and enjoyment. Of course it’s not all been high jinx and ballyhoo in the office this month. As always we have some fantastic (true) news articles and some wonderful reading from our regular contributors. My favourite article this month is from regular writer Paddy Waller, who eloquently and beautifully describes his experience of Spanish family life. We have some great news regarding renewing your passport as an ex-pat living in Spain and also an interesting article regarding your car tyres and Spanish traffic law. Not to mention great recipies from Debs Jenkins, and Dawn Llewellyn Price gives us her usual idiosyncratic take on life. Also we have now drawn the winner of our 42 inch LED TV competition. Congratulations to the lucky winner, who is currently on holiday, but will be claiming her prize when she returns. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who entered the competition and also thank you to the wonderful team a t TJ Electrical Camposol for supplying such an awesome prize. If you didn’t win this time, then fear not as we have lots more ideas in the pipeline for great competitions and prizes. Have a great April everyone, enjoy the magazine, love your neighbour and don’t take life too seriously. See you next month, Robert Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

Spain is the 3rd most visited country in the world
The tourism sector in Spain is breaking records. It finished 2013 with not only a record in the number of visitors, but also in the amount of money that these holidaymakers generated – so much so that Spain has recuperated its third position in the ranking for most visited countries, which it lost to China in 2010. Spain is now the third most visited country in the world after France and the United States. In 2008, Spain was relegated from second place in the ranking for number of visitors, being overtaken by the United States. And what’s more, it was then superseded by China two years later and dropped into fourth position. 2013, however, was a year of changes and good fortune in terms of holidaying abroad. Between January and November, a total of 57.5 million international visitors took a break or holiday in Spain, mainly in the principal tourist destinations. Without official statistics for the month of December, by using figures from the same month of 2012, the total for the whole year would be 60.2 million tourists. However, this figure would be eclipsed if the growth in the number of visitors, particularly to the Canary Islands, was taken into consideration, then final figure would be 60.4 million foreign visitors.
Spain Warns Of High Risk Of New Islamist Attacks Ten years after the March 11, 2004 terrorist bombings of a number of commuter trains in Madrid, there is a “high” risk of new Islamist attacks on Spanish soil, according to a government agency. A report drafted by the National Center for Anti-terrorist Coordination (CNCA), which answers to the Interior Ministry, discusses “a probable risk of an attack,” which has led the government to activate a level 2 alert. Following the Basque group ETA’s announcement of a “definitive end” to its campaign of violence in October 2011, Spain’s anti-terrorism efforts have focused mainly on Islamists. But oversight of Islamist activity in Spain had begun much earlier. Since 1995, law enforcement agents have arrested 472 alleged Islamists, although full awareness of the real extent of the threat did not sink in until after the Madrid attacks, which killed 191 people and injured thousands more. Right now, experts note that the main threats come from local, self-radicalized cells and from “lone wolves,” who find inspiration in the concept of global Jihad as preached by Al Qaeda. These individuals have no direct contact with organized terrorist groups. But Spain’s counter-terrorism experts are also concerned about Islamists who return home after a period of training in combat zones, as well as convicted terrorists who are released after serving their sentences. As for threats to Spain brewing outside its own borders, the government is mostly concerned about the Maghreb and Sahel areas, where Jihadists are known to operate. Following the chain of attacks in Casablanca, Morocco in May 2003, the Civil Guard wrote reports warning about the risk of an imminent attack in Spain, even though counter-terrorism services were not yet fully aware of the extent of Al Qaeda’s presence in the country. The risk was underestimated, and the massacre of March 11, 2004 caught them by surprise, even though most of the perpetrators already had a police record.

It was after the Madrid tragedy that the government deployed more personnel and equipment to combat the Islamist threat, police sources admitted. The police have found that the greatest number of Islamists are living in Catalonia, Granada, Valencia, La Rioja and Madrid. But a recent report notes that the exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla Spanish cities surrounded by Moroccan territory in northern Africa - “have recently acquired an unprecedented importance” for recruiters who find potential terrorists there. Several studies show that the average Jihadist arrested in Spain is male and aged between 25 and 39. Most are married and have children, and 80% are either Moroccan, Algerian or Pakistani. Their educational backgrounds are diverse, and 20% of them have been arrested before for common crimes such as drug trafficking.
ABANDONED medieval hamlets across Spain are being ‘given away’ to foreign investors. The deserted villages, many of them centuries old, can now be acquired for
free or bought for incredibly low prices. The village of A Barca in northern Spain, which dates back to the 15th century, is being offered for nothing to the right investor. Any potential adoptors of the village, however, will have to prove they have a viable plan to preserve the delapidated

stone houses. Other villages are being sold off at rockbottom prices, such as Pena Vella, near A Pontenova in Galicia which is on the market for just €62,000. Estate agents say the majority of these ‘ghost hamlets’ are being bought by foreigners, with Britons, Norwegians, Americans, Germans and Russians snatching up medieval properties. There are around 2,900 abandoned hamlets across the country, according the Spain’s National Statistics Institute. Most of these were left vacant after villagers moved to big cities, or were forced to leave after farming land became less fertile.

Following news from the Mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Alfonso Fernando Ceron, that the town hall was receiving around 50 applications for employment
per day, Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos SA (Premursa) had taken the decision to open a facility on the outskirts of the town in order to assist with the the selection, recruitment and training of staff. Initial estimates had placed the number of direct jobs to be created by the park at 1,500, with a further 20,000 positions likely to be created locally as a result of the construction and operation of the park. However, when the offices opened and candidates invited to submit their applications for employment construction work was expected to commence within weeks, with Paramount Murcia being open to the public for the summer 2015 season. With the likely date of opening now looking uncertain, the question of what has happened with regards to the candidate applications and recruitment process for staff at the park - and at what cost to date - has to be asked.

Seaplanes To Become a Familiar Sight Over Murcian Skies Seaplanes are to become a familiar sight over the skies of Murcia it has been announced. The regional board for aviation transport have had several meetings with a consortium of business men led by Peter Jones, the multi millionaire entrepreneur and star of BBC´s Dragons den it has been reported. The bold plan aims to use Seaports based on the River Clyde in Glasgow and also in Friedrichschafen, Germany to bring passengers directly to the Mar Menor starting from May 2014. So far a fleet of 6 Hughes Hercules seaplanes have each undergone an 8 million euro re-fit to bring them up to 2014 standards. The aim of the service is “to herald the return of a long forgotten mode of air transportation, where luxury and service are paramount to the overall travel experience” said Peter Jones. Each propeller powered seaplane is capable of carrying only 80 passengers, and the flight time from Glasgow is expected to be around 5 and half hours. “The total travel time will be comparable to that of a standard flight using a jet

powered aircraft” stated Mr Jones at a press conference. “Our passengers will be able to completely by pass airports altogether, eliminating the need for queuing, passport control, boarding and all of the inconveniences that add to the overall journey time from door to door. Moreover, they will be able to do so in complete luxury.” No expense or attention to detail on the refit on each of the 1945 Hughes Hercules Seaplanes. On board entertainment includes a casino, a nightclub with VIP lounge, and a “relaxation area” where passengers can enjoy a sauna, thermal spa circuit and indoor swimming pool. Every plane will have a themed Michelin star restaurant with celebrity chefs in regular in flight attendance. Those who prefer to remain more active during the flight will be able to use an on board gym, and oval running track. Peter Jones said “For those who can afford it this new and exclusive mode of air travel will be unsurpassable in terms of enjoyment and convenience as well as adding a boost to the Spanish economy by delivering a regular supply of wealthy Oligarchs, Sheiks, Lottery winners and other wealthy people to the Mar Menor area.” Further information including schedules and ticket prices will be announced soon on the company website.

Coca Cola Calls Time on Social Media Addicts
To prevent social media addicts from checking Facebook and Instagram every few seconds, Coca-Cola has designed a special ‘Social Media Guard’. Shaped like a pet cone, it is colored red after the brand and addicts are supposed to wear it around their necks, which will prevent them from checking their

If you’re watching this video on your mobile phone, it’s time to put down.” “Look around you, there is probably someone special you can share a real moment with. Enjoy it with an ice-cold Coke :)” We all know of someone who might need Coke’s ‘Social Media Guard.
As from the 7th of April the cost of a UK passport for Expats is due to be reduced to £83 for adults and £53 for children. All overseas passports are now issued in UK, and as a result a portion of the cost savings in processing the paperwork centrally - approximately 35% - have been passed over to the applicant. UK Immigration and Security Minister, James Brokenshire, says Her Majesty’s Passport Office is committed to delivering better value for money for our customers.
“I am pleased to announce that from 7 April the passport fee for customers applying for a UK passport overseas will be reduced by £45 for adults and £28.50 for children “ The new fees are as follows : Adult 32 page passport £83.00 Child 32 page passport £53.00 Jumbo 48 page passport £91.00 (Child and Adult) This reduction comes as a result of efficiency savings made over the last 3 years by taking back the processing and issuing of overseas passports to the UK while still maintaining the highest levels of security and customer service

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!! Now is the time to get ready for the rush of summer visitors that put money in your bank to help pay for the up keep of your holiday homes! So many people do not understand if they rent their properties out they need to keep them in good order – yes that may mean painting, gardening, replacing kitchen equipment, linen, towels, furniture, sofas that are tired or uncomfortable and not forgetting the sagging mattresses. You have to view this project of yours as a business. Take a good look at your property and say “Would I want to pay good money, my hard earned holiday money for this place?” Take into consideration that there are hundreds of properties to rent. This is your chance to impress your guests and get repeat bookings. So if your property is not up to the right standard, DO something about it!! One of the most common complaints that we hear all the time in the shop is that holiday clients have a bad back or can´t sleep because of a lumpy, sagging mattress. Your holiday clients are here to relax, so if the bed frame squeaks please change it! No-one wants the Out Laws or kids knowing what is occurring in the bedroom (which is part of a holiday, relaxed and away from the worries of home) not don´t forget the teenagers who find it all very gross – so
page 8
no street cred there then!! The next common complaint is that there is not enough patio furniture to enjoy the outdoor life in the sun (which is one of the main reasons they are in Spain after all). Ideally your guests would like a quality patio set, outdoor dining table and chairs, comfortable seating and the all important parasol to offer a little shade from the sun. And if you have advertised that your holiday home is for 6 people, then guests rightly expect that there will be a sun lounger for each person to while away the hours around the pool. So, you have sorted out the mattresses, beds and outdoor areas. Now it is time to look at your sofas. Do they need replacing or do they need a good clean? Even if you can´t afford replace the sofas then make sure that they are clean. Most sofas have removable covers that can be washed, so put in the machine at your lowest temperature and spin. Take out

of machine and put back the fillings and dry on terrace. Doing it this way it is easier to put the fillings back in the damp covers as the material is more pliable and best part is no ironing required. For the base of the sofas use a little washing up liquid in warm water and sponge down the bases Finally sponge down again with clear, warm water. Leave doors and windows

open to dry, or if you can take the sofa outside to dry. Job done. Feeling proud of yourselves now? We are not finished yet! Here are a few more hints to make your property stand out from the crowd. do the curtains need washing? If so have a Spring clean! No curtains? Get some, as bare windows make the place look unfinished. Do the sofas need a bit of colour with some cushions? Buy some. Get a few pictures or mirrors on the walls to add interest. If throws or bedspreads seen better days, brighten then up with a wash. Or if you have the budget, invest in some new ones. Give your property a friendly, homely feel which gives a welcome “glad you are here” to your clients. Remember every client has access to a very large network of potential NEW clients for you for this year and following years? If you don’t invest in your holiday property, then you have just missed an opportunity for your best form of advertising. - word of mouth! So friends, family, probably two lots of work colleagues, chats with other Mum’s at the school gates and other social events. Ouch! That hurts your bank balance. If you have a good rental agent they will tell you when things need to be replaced. Keeping properties in good

order means they can get more rentals with the good life of Spain as well. every year for you. Listen to your Written by Chris from Furniture Plus agent, they know your competition and they will be able to advise you on how to maximise your letting potential and compete with other rental homes in the area. After all, they don’t want complaints that are going to affect their reputation! Let’s face it, if you keep your property up to standard , when you stay in it yourselves you will also have a better holiday as you will be comfortable and will want come to Spain more often for your breaks. It might sound like a lot of work, but if you want to maximise your rental income then it has to be done. But the good news is that if you keep things up to date and fit out your holiday home properly, the list of jobs is never as big. Enjoy your property in the sun legal & registered seven years

different countries and eleven homes but I have never actually sat down to read it. It is nothing like the stereotyped recipe book laid out with exact weighed ingredients and how to produce it complete with glossy picture, but within her witty recollections she gives you the essence of the dish. Her recollection An Omelette and a Glass of Wine sums up for me a little of the pretention’s within the food and wine industry. A Vehicle grap hics celebrated restaurant called the Hôtel de la Tête on the Mont-St-Michel just off the coast of Normandy had a reputation built on one single menu which was served day in day out of year after year. It AN OMLETTE AND A consisted of an omelette, ham, a fried sole, pré-salé lamb cutlets with potatoes, GLASS OF WINE a roast chicken and salad, and a dessert. him or her alone Madame Poulard had confided the secret of her omelettes. At last, eventually a Frenchman called M. Robert Viel, interested in facts rather than surmises, wrote to Madame Poulard, by this time long retired from her arduous labours, and asked her once and for all to clear up the matter. Her reply, published in 1932 in a magazine called La Table, ran as follows:
Monsieur Viel 6 June 1932 Here is the recipe for the omelette: I break some good eggs in a bowl, I beat them well, I put a good piece of butter in the pan, I throw the eggs into it, and I shake it constantly. I am happy, monsieur, if this recipe pleases you. Annette Poulard. So much for secrets. ! I have eaten extensively in France and Germany and many other parts of the world but the one meal I always remember was one I ate on one of our holidays to Ibiza in the later part of the 70’s. We had hired bicycles and headed up the coast and then inland, stopping for lunch at a restaurant in a typical Spanish white washed village. Complete with a small outside eating terrace and strung with purple bougainvillea; the first time I had ever encountered the plant, and shaded from the sun by a vine. Crisp white linen tablecloths and sparkling glasses. I had, which I can honestly say was the finest Omelette de fin herb I have ever tasted, and to this day have never had one better nor better presented with just a simple green salad and a glass of chilled white. So simple but so appetising. I’m not sure whether this book is now out of print but if not it’s well worth a read. Even if you’re not into cooking the anecdotes and stories of her life as a journalist and the people she encountered is worth the price. Auberon Waugh in the Daily Mail wrote ‘If I had to choose one woman this century (meaning the 20th) who had brought about the greatest improvement in English life…my vote would go… to Elizabeth David’. I think he was referring to her introduction of “foreign food” to the English palate. Published by Penguin An Omelette and a Glass of Wine. By Elizabeth David

MAZARRON BAHIA LEO CLUB The Mazarron Bahia Leo Club members joined with family and friends to do the sponsored walk or bike ride On Sunday the 9th March at Camposol B.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and all the money raised will go to sending the children with Diabetes to a special camp to help them learn how to cope with this illness. All the Mazarron Leos have friends in school who are diabetic. They were therefor very proud to contribute with sending the children supported by The Diabetic Association to go to Diabcamp for a week. Every year the Mazarron Lions work hard to sponsor these children to attend the camp. In Spain there were over 1, 500 new cases of Diabetes in children diagnosed last year. The Leos say that volunteering trains
them to see the world through someone else´s eyes, teaching them compassion and responsibility. The Mazarron Leos are helping to make their community a better place. To be grateful for what they have and not take things for granted. The Lions and Camposol where this club is based are very proud of the Leos and thank them for their wonderful effort. Thanks must also go to the Fast volunteers for being there with their support and lollipops and John a member for taking all the photos. Thank you again Healthy H2O for once again for supplying the water. Many thanks to Maureen & Simon, for their help with planning the route and to Leo Leaders Martin & Cressy for their invaluable enthusiasm and support. LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT
Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. 1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

La Familia
When I first entered into my wifeJulia’s household and met her family I quickly realised it was a closely knit unit but in no time at all I was accepted as part of that unit. Besides the fact that Julia’s grandmother couldn’t pronounce Patrick and called me everything but my name and insisted I was French, I fitted in pretty easily and I was bestowed the privilege of being part of the “tribe”. (Julia has always said that here in Spain people are nearer to being tribal than in the northern European countries). I was accepted unconditionally.
Sunday lunch
Once you’re on “the inside” everything becomes so much clearer. “La Familia” is a very functional and highly valued part of Spanish society. Not long ago it was still important to have lots of children .The church actively encouraged it and it was especially important for some poor landowners who needed cheap manual labour whilst for others children were a economic burden. So up until recently thus the importance of having sons. A sort of agricultural hangover that most of N. Europe got over by the end of the 19th century but for Spain it went on well into
the 20th century. This is probably one of the reasons that Spanish society today is still a very “macho” one.
Murcian rice- similar to paella but in a deeper pan producing a moist rice. By being on the inside you can see how the family works and why. Not only is contact maintained with one’s “pueblo” by visiting it regularly but also with the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews and nieces. The list of cousins once removed etc is long and Spaniards normally still have active social contact with nearly all their family members. It took me some time to remember all the names(now they all have kids I have lost the plot a bit).
true you can see more homeless and hard up people on the street but rioting and looting is almost nonexistent. It is not because there are ample social benefits such as unemployment benefit and help for the needy. On the contrary unemployment benefit in Spain runs out after two years and the government has been making big cuts to all kinds of social help. So how do people survive? If their whole family is unemployed for more than two years, how do they cope? How do all the long term unemployed and 50% of under 28 year olds survive? The answer is simply: “La Familia”. It is not a mafia-like “Cosa Nostra” network in Spain but it is a network that supports its own in hard times. Everyone pulls together. Pure and simple: family members support each other. I know of cases of one son supporting his whole family, his parents and brothers or families surviving because they have moved back into their parents house etc etc. In Spain the family partly substitutes the social benefits system and is what makes the country tick.
Salad, wine and more Family getogether
And there is a reason why social unrest in Spain during these hard economic times is really not that apparent. It’s
Above all, the family is the source of all moral support and love. Most problems are aired and discussed, sometimes to exaggeration. But everyone has a clear

role within the family and the adults protect and educate the youngsters(as in any country) but what is different here is that kids are included in most activities and especially at mealtimes. However, young they may be their presence at the meal table is seen as important and the act of sharing is impressed upon them. Sharing the moment, sharing the food(so many Spanish dishes are put in the centre of the table and shared from a central plate/dish eg. Paella, tapas,s alads etc) and sharing space. I say space because at most family meals between ten and twenty people at the table is common so space has to be shared and everyone learns from an early age that each has their space but you have to ensure that you get on with your neighbour in order to reach the central dish or not be sidelined. I reckon this sharing in a large group helps make Spanish people more gregarious and keen to socialise in general. What I most like about “La Familia” is that all ages respect and feel genuine affection for their grandparents. It is probably the single most important aspect of the Spanish family unit is that the grandparents are actively involved and in many cases totally involved in bringing up their grandchildren sharing with them experiences, adventures, problems, food etc This produces a real bond between the generations and is key to the whole fabric of the family unit.
All are included
Youngsters and partying aged members of the family really do respect their elders and always make it to the Sunday family meal even if they have been out all night the night before. It is a kind of unwritten norm that you can go out but you can’t miss the family lunch and indeed they don’t want to.
Some of the Spanish “Familia”
What I like is the informality of these family gatherings. I came from a household which was pretty relaxed but Sunday meals were a fairly traditional family gathering with a certain ordered formality to them(the good crockery, eating in the dining room, instead of the kitchen etc). Fun meals, but slightly formal. So here in Spain thirty years ago what impressed me straight away, was the organised anarchy at mealtimes, the noise, the great food in the centre of the table, wine and the importance given to the source of the ingredients. This was and still is a big topic of conversation. Where to buy the best free range rabbit/ chicken/olive oil/wine etc. Supermarkets should never be used to shop for a Sunday meal….the rabbit from so and so who lives down the road or the chicken from the guy who has 30 chickens in the countryside and looks as if he is constantly hung-over, unshaved and under washed. It’s a look you’d think he

I can’t tell you if the family here is better or worse than in any other country but it is different and it is totally genuine. If there is one thing Spanish people value above all else it is “La Familia” and to be honest for me it is easy to see why.
Patrick Waller, who together with his wife writes The Artichoke Adventures, first came to live in Spain in 1982 to learn Spanish after finishing university and worked in city of Murcia where he met his wife Julia. In 2012 they set upset up their own company. The company is called The Spanish Thyme Traveller www. thespanishthymetraveller.com that specialises in organising food and wine experiences and holidays in the regions of Valencia and Teruel. Both Patrick and Julia love Spain, Spanish food and wine, and the outdoors. They have travelled extensively all over Spain and love sharing their experiences on their blog and with their customers.”

Debbie Shaw If you ask anyone on Camposol if they know Debbie, the answer is a resounding yes. She is a well-respected and up standing member of our community. Debbie has lived in Spain for most of her life, although she did attend boarding school and college where she studied advanced business and Spanish, in the UK for a few years. Debbie has lived in Camposol for 6 years. It is quite aplaudable what one young person can achieve if they are determined, Drivenand hardworking. Debbie is always around to lend helpful advice or a sympathetic ear. In her time here she has been the official translator for thecra and for the fiesta committee and has assisted numerous other charities and comities. And not a day goes by that she isn’t being commended, thanked or praised on the Facebook site “Preguntas y Mas Murcia”. Although it’s not surprising when you see the amount of questions she answers on that site daily. Debbie’s knowledge of Spanish legislation is first class. What she doesn’t know, isn’t worth knowing. She is often one of the first to volunteer offers of help for numerous charities and is constantly fighting to help make Camposol a better place and a better community. One of Debbie’s proudest achievements is that she owns her own house on Camposol. “I never dreamed I could own my own house at my age, and the fact that I bought it on my own and all before I was 30 is something I am very proud of.” Most know of Debbie as one of Camposol’s leading translators. She has her medical centre scheme in the doctor’s surgery, where she spends 3 days a week, helping her clients with their prescriptions, doctor’s appointments and hospital appointments. This is a remarkable scheme and at only a 60e year (or 110e a couple) one you can’t really afford to turn down. Many clients say how Debbie is always going above and beyond the call of duty to help her clients. When Debbie is not in the medical centre she is often helping the police with crime reports, at the hospital with clients, in trafico transferring cars or driving licenses or up early fighting the cues for residencies and NIE’s. One of her clients recently commented “There are translators, and then there is Debbie Shaw. . .” What some people are not aware of is that Debbie also has another business, a water filter company, Water Filters Spain. Debbie has been involved in the water filter industry for over 6 years, she has sold over 3500 systems up and down the coast, she has run 2 other water filter companies in the area, before setting up on her own and taking things to a new level. Her idea to stack them high and sell them cheap has really paid off, as her online sales have shot through the roof, as have sales in the local area…
2013
Who would have thought you could have a drinking water filter supplied and installed for only 30e?...WHY ARE YOU STILL BUYING, CARRYING AND STORING BOTTLED water?. Debbie’s marketing strategy has been so successful that other companies have now followed suit. Debbie not being afraid to get her hands dirty even fits them herself, when she has the time! Debbie is also known as the Glamorous assistant to International comedy hypnotist Ken Maybury. And what a show that is, if you haven’t seen it, It is a must! Debbie has always enjoyed the stage show and the comedy side of hypnosis, but it was when she lost over 20 kilos and kept it off thanks to clinical hypnotherapy, that she became completely intrigue with the serious side of hypnotherapy. She is now nearing the end of her training to be a hypnotherapist and is very much looking forward to helping her numerous clients lose weight, stop smoking and to taking away their pain or stress. A client who ken recently helped stop smoking said “It’s been 6 months now since Ken hypnotised me to stop smoking. Never thought I could be a non-smoker, having tried other methods which were unsuccessful. So a very big thankyou and i will always highly recommend him”Debbie has the advantage of being able to treat people in English or Spanish. An invention that can turn water into wine‌? The Miracle Machine essentially works like a Soda Stream by turning water, grape concentrate and yeast into wine via a mobile phone app supported by iOS and Android. The device has a fermentation chamber that “uses an array of electrical sensors, transducers, heaters and pumps to provide a controlled environment for fermentation.â€? A digital refractometer measures the sugar content of the wine during the fermentation process, while a ceramic air-diffuser pumps filtered air under a regulated micro-oxygenated environment in order to soften the tannins. At the same time, an ultrasonic transducer directly underneath the chamber resonates and speeds up the flavour development of the wine. Customers can choose the type of wine they want to make, from “Napaâ€? Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to “Oregonâ€? Pinot Noir and a “Tuscanâ€? red blend. The grape concentrate, yeast and “final sachet of ingredientsâ€? will soon be available to buy on the Miracle Machine website and eventually Amazon. The cost of making a bottle of wine using the machine equates to 1.25â‚Ź, though the quality of the resulting wine

Torrijas – Spanish Easter Speciality – Murcianica Style Kind of like eggy-bread or French toast, Torrijas are a wonderful way to use up left over dry bread and all those eggs our chickens are making now the weather has warmed up. As with all my recipes, which are usually passed to me from the ladies in the village (though for this recipe I had input from two breadmaker’s wives, the owner of the stables where I keep my horse and a 14-year old Spanish girl) the actual ingredients and weights and measures are a little bit lacking in specificity. I’m sure you’ll get it right, like the 14-year old said, “It’s easy, even my brother can make them!” Ingredients for Torrijas • Good quality barra – bread stick – let it dry for a day (If you’re lucky your local bakers might slice it up for you too!) • Eggs • Cinnamon Stick • Milk • Sugar • Ground Cinnamon Method for Making Torrijas 1. Warm up a small pan of milk and a cinnamon stick. How much milk you need depends upon how much bread you have, see step 2. 2. Cut your barra into slices about two fingers width (sideways fingers, not small-glass-of-wine-size-vertical fingers). One large barra will make about 20-30 torrijas and will need at least two glasses of milk. 3. When the milk is warmed through pour it on the slices of bread in a shallow pan and let it soak in for at least an hour. You may want to carefully move the bread around to ensure all pieces get an even soaking and add more milk if needed. Each slice of bread needs to be wet through. 4. Heat the oil (mixture of about 80% sunflower and 20% olive works well) till smoking, in a deep pan. You only need enough oil to allow the bread to float, 5 fingers wide – make sure there’s plenty of space in the pan for bubbling! 5. Beat a couple of eggs (how many you need in total depends on how much bread – you can always beat more!) and then carefully pick up a slice of milk-soaked bread and dip it into the egg making sure it’s completely covered, then put it straight into the hot oil. 6. Cook for about 3 minutes, turning once. You can probably fry 4-5 pieces at the same time, but don’t

overload the pan. 7. When the bread is a nice golden brown colour remove it from the pan and place it on kitchen towel to drain. 8. Mix sugar and ground cinnamon and put it on a plate. How much depends on the number of torrijas you’ve made, about 1 cup of sugar should be enough for 1 large barra. 9. Dip the torrijas in the sugar/ cinnamon mixture and eat! Some extra tips: 1. Make more than you need so you can taste-test them as you go – 3 for the guests, 1 for taste-testing, 3 Want to stand for the guest pile, 1 for taste-testing, repeat… You get the idea!
up after frying is always fun, and by the time you’ve fried your last few the pan will be mighty yucky. 5. Serve just as they are for breakfast or as a pudding. Or try with pears in red wine and home-made turrón ice-cream (recipes on nativespain.com). Plans for a “Zimmer” version for those of limited mobility that will reach speeds of up to 50kmh are also in the pipeline. Imagine one of them whizzing past you in the isle of Mercadona!
Hoverboard Comes to Life Michael J Fox had one in Back to the Future 2. And now you can own a hoverboard as well, if you believe in the power of Hollywood to predict the future. The skateboard that hovers above the ground has come to life. Christopher Lloyd, who played mad scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, in the fictional Back to the Future movie trilogy, has

been brought in by HUVrtech to star in the launch the Hoverboard called a HUVr. Lloyd says that at the time of making Back to the Future 2 he would have loved for the hoverboard to become a reality. But now, he says, “the technology has caught up with the concept”. Other stars such as skateboard legend Tony Hawk, musician Moby, athlete Terrell Owens, and rap artist Schoolboy Q, have also been among the first to try out the HUVr board. The Huvrboard was developed by Michigan Institute of Technology. The research and development team consists of several departments including materials, science, and electricity & magnetism. These experts have solved an important part of one of science’s mysteries: the key to antigravity. There can be no doubt that the way we travel will change forever. Wireless Electric Now A Reality Dr. Katie Hall couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw a light-bulb glowing with no wires attached. It was just an experiment in a small room filled with giant refrigerator coils, but the light still glowed as she walked in and out between the coils and the bulb. Hall is now the Chief Technology Officer at WiTricity, a startup developing wireless electricity. The company built what is known as a Source Resonator: a coil of wire that generates a magnetic field in the air when power is attached. Should another coil be placed nearby, no wires are required for a charge to be generated. “When you bring a device into that magnetic field, it induces a current in the device, and by that you’re able to transfer power,” explains Hall. And don’t worry about getting electrocuted. Hall assures that the magnetic fields are “perfectly” safe, an assertion we’ll trust considering they’re the same kind used in WiFi routers. Wire-free energy transfer could soon be as easy as wireless Internet. Smartphones could charge in your pockets, and electric cars wouldn’t have to leave , WiTricity has already successfully powered laptops, cell phones and TVs by resonator coils attached to batteries. But it was medical technology that Hall first thought of when she saw the wireless bulb.
2013
WiTricity is currently working with a medical supplies company to recharge a pump that goes in the left ventricle of the heart. This will be one of a series of devices that will be implanted under the skin and charge as the patient relaxes in a specific. “With Wifi Electricity the possibilities and applications of this technology are literally endless. This is the future.”
According to Spritz, 80 percent of the time you spend reading is devoted to physically moving your eyes from one word to the next in search of the ORP, while only 20 percent is spent actually processing the information. To speed things up, Spritz reformats the text and aligns it so there is essentially no physical eye movement, and almost all of your time is spent taking in data. The Spritz Web page explains what makes Spritz different from other speed reading systems: “There are lots of other reading techniques out
the scene being described, and I want to use sub-vocalization to “hear” the different character voices in my head. For other texts, however, Spritz would be helpful. Imagine how much more productive you’d be if you could get through all your email in a fifth of the time it normally takes you. I would love to see Amazon partner with Spritz—or just buy it outright— and incorporate the technology as an option when reading a Kindle book. I can’t wait to take advantage of Spritz, but sadly I’ll have to.
Amazing New Reading Technology
Between email, Web pages, books and other texts, we each read thousands of words a day. A company called Spritz has spent the last few years, developing a technology to help us read even more, in less time. Spritz—which is both the name of the technology and the verb for using it—streams text on your screen one word at a time, which, the company claims, allows your brain to comprehend it much more quickly and easily. Their trademarked tagline is “Reading Reimagined,” and after playing with the technology a bit I have to agree. Spritz technology enables you to read and comprehend information much faster than normal.

there such as skimming (not reading every word), avoiding sub-vocalization (talking to yourself while reading) and enlarging the peripheral span (reading an entire page at a time by mental “snapshot”) that attempt to increase reading speeds. While these methods can be effective, achieving significant improvement requires intensive, continuous training and dedication. By contrast, spritzing can be learned in less than 5 minutes and, if you don’t spritz for a month, no practice is needed to return quickly to your previous speed or skill-level.” I wouldn’t necessarily want to read fiction using Spritz. When I read a noveI want to take in the nuance of the dialogue. I want to give my brain time to imagine
Spritz will be pre-installed on the new Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch, but as of right now it’s not available any other way. Hopefully it will soon be incorporated into iOS, or at least into iOS apps. If you want to test out Spritz for yourself, visit the Spritz website. At the upper right there is a button labeled “click to spritz,” which brings up a box displaying text using Spritz technology. There is a dropdown box at the bottom right that allows you to select how fast, in words per minute, the text zooms by. Try it out. I think you’ll be amazed at how much more effectively and efficiently you can read.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Being first and foremost a Welshwoman, despite my Latina leanings, I seldom need an excuse to don a daffodil, slip into a rugby shirt, and sing Hymns and Arias (that’s a Max Boyce song which resounds around the Millennium Stadium and not a selection of holy chants to an imaginary friend.) I finally went to see this hugely popular entertainer on stage a couple of weeks ago, still going strong at 71 and laughed till I cried. ‘You Tube’ him. My Scottish friend did and was extremely grateful for the recommendation. My favourite food is Laverbread; nothing to do with the doughy stuff, just simple boiled seaweed best fried with cockles and perched on the edge of a full English, or just cold on toast or a cracker;-the only stuff that will clear your system of radio active metals should Swansea ever be ‘nuked’. When I hit Spanish soil, I’m immediately transformed into Chica Latina, with flamenco, David Bisbal,
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and Picasso scattered around me and the red rugby shirt vanishes as that colour moves onto the lower half of my body and I wear the traditional (so it seems) Spanish uniform of red trousers. Or green trousers. Or any brightly coloured trousers. With flowers on. Ole. So, I couldn’t allow this Centenary year of the birth of Dylan Thomas to pass without mention. Celebrations abound with a festival, and ‘Under Milk Wood’ will be thrust at us from all corners of the world (it’s the most performed anywhere) and poetry and drunkenness will no doubt have a huge revival. Any excuse. Miss Price, dressmaker and sweetshop keeper, dream of her lover, tall as the town clock tower, Samson –syrup-gold-maned, whacking thighed and piping hot, thunderbolt bass’d and barnaclebreasted, flailing up the cockles with his eyes like blowlamps and scooping low over her lonely loving hotwaterbottled body.
Once you’ve got your head around the sheer wordiness of it all. They’ve just finished making a film about his life, in and around Swansea, with Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood being spotted at various hostelries as New York in the Fifties was re-created around the corner from me, and a fleet of American cars rolled in along with a snow machine. As Dylan couldn’t tell if ‘it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve, or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six’

Finca Butron- Bringing History back to Life A Resident of Camposol, Antonio Hernandez Benitez, is a well know member of our community. A proud Spaniard with an in depth knowledge of local history, Antonio actively contributes and participates in community matters and loves the British culture. He is intrigued by British customs, traditions and humour, citing Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and horses as his all time favourite sitcoms. Antonio’s family have lived in this area for several generations and he has a wonderful and inspiring plan to restore a nearby abandoned family farm to its former glory. We have the special privilege to interview him and find out what ideas he has for the restoration. The Journal: Antonio, we know that your family has a long history in the area. What can you tell us about your ancestors? Antonio: Around about 300 years ago Fuente Alamo was created. Families moved into the area as they were offered free fields to create farms. My family was one of those who came here to farm.
Many people often ask me why the local villages in the area share their surnames with local people. Canovas, Romero, Reyllo, Paganes, Almagros and so on. This is because the villages were named after the families who moved here to farm. The Journal: Interesting. So you come from a family of local farmers. What was life like back in those days for farmers? Antonio: The soil was rich and fertile, but farming was hard work. We still have our original family home close by to the farm. But back then things were different. Life was tough back then. People worked hard and there were local disputes. Around 2 kilometres from the farm there is a stone cross that marks the place where my great grandfather was murdered by some workers of the old lords of the area, an event that started a long local war. But that is another story. The Journal: Please tell our readers about your project and your plans for the family farm. Antonio: The farm was abandoned many years ago. My aim is to bring it back to life. I am in the process of working on the renovation and obtaining the permissions and licences to operate as an organic, free range hen farm. The entire space is around 30,000m2 of which I only need 6,000m2 for Hen Farming. The Journal: So what plans to you have for the rest of the land?

Many people will be interested we are sure. Can you tell our readers how much an allotment would cost them and what they would get for their money?
Antonio: We can offer a 50m2 allotment for only 19.95€ a month incuding I.V.A. This will include water also. If I am on the farm I am always happy to help others and can look after the allotment for them for them if they are on holiday or not around. The Legality Of Tyres On Road Vehicles In Spain

the spare !
Driving with worn or non-matching tyres can attract on the spot fines of 150 euros, and the vehicle can even be taken from the driver immediately and impounded in cases where 3 or more of the tyres are found to be unsafe.
Motoring law stipulates that the tread depth on a tyre should be no less than 1.6mm (although many motoring organisations recommend that a tread depth of 3.00mm should be observed to ensure safe and optimum driving conditions are met.
Tyre Specification
There are a number of quirky laws relating to motoring here in Spain, and a number of these relate specifically to the tyres that are fitted on a road vehicle and the condition that they are in. Tyres in Spain are not as cheap to buy as the UK and as such it is important that you understand the legality behind tyres and avoid the likelyhood that you will end up buying a set that does not meet with your exact requirements.
* The final letter in the sequence denotes the speed rating of the tyre. The letter rating can be equal to, or greater than mentioned in the Fichas Tecnicas. For Example, where an “S” is fitted, it can be replaced with a “T”, but not an “R”. Tyre Variations All tyres fitted on a vehicle are require to be the of the same make/size/speed code etc... on every wheel - Don’t forget
Tyre degradation Those who have brought a vehicle over to Spain from the UK often notice that their tyres seem to lose pressure and therefore need topping up with air more than they ever did in the UK, and can spend ages searching for slow punctures that just don’t exist. The reason behind this is the significantly warmer temperatures seen here in most of Spain - especially if your car is generally kept outside or in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Sunlight and higher temperatures causes the rubber to perish and degrade, which results in the walls of the tyres crystallising and cracking and the air slowly escapes. If this does happen, you will have to accept that the tyres will need replacing altogether sooner or later - regardless of the tread depth remaining.

Yes, the specification of the tyres is crucial. If your ‘Fichas Tecnicas’ state that 225/70/R16/102-S* tyres are fitted, then you cannot change them for something else, no matter how practical or economical they are. Your vehicle will not pass an ITV unless the tyres fitted match the tyres shown in the specification, regardless of their condition.

Cover loosely with a piece of cling film and leave somewhere warm to prove again for a further 1 hr or until doubled in size, the buns should be just touching. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Brush the buns with a little beaten egg. Mix the remaining flour with enough water to make a thick paste, then transfer to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle, or use a sandwich bag and snip off one corner. Use the paste to pipe crosses over the buns – this is easiest if you pipe in one big circle, then put a line across the middle of each bun. Bake for 25 mins until golden and cooked through.
Ingredients 300ml whole milk zest 1 orange 50g butter, cubed 500g strong white flour, plus 140g for the crosses, and extra for dusting 1 tsp cinnamon 85g golden caster sugar 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast 1 large egg, beaten, plus 1 egg to glaze oil, for greasing 100g dried mixed fruit For the spiced honey butter 200g salted butter, softened 1½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger 4 tbsp clear honey
Meanwhile, make the spiced honey butter. Put the butter, spices and honey in a bowl and beat with an electric whisk until smooth. Transfer to a bowl. When the buns are cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10 mins on the baking tray. Serve the bun ring warm with the butter in the centre for spreading. The buns will keep for up to 3 days in a tin or freeze for up to 3 months.

Remove from the heat and add the butter, swirling the pan until the butter has melted and the milk has cooled to hand temperature. Mix the flour, cinnamon, sugar, yeast and 1 tsp salt in a large bowl. Pour in the milk mixture and the beaten egg, and mix with a wooden spoon until the mixture clumps together. Tip out onto your work surface and knead until smooth and elastic – the dough should bounce back when pressed with your finger. Transfer to a clean oiled bowl, cover with cling film or a tea towel and leave to rise for 2 hrs or until doubled in size. Dust your largest baking tray with flour. Tip the dough back onto your work surface and knead again to knock out any air bubbles. Add the dried fruit and knead to incorporate into the dough. Divide the dough into 11 equal pieces. Cut small pockets into the skin and flesh of the lamb by piercing it with the point of a sharp knife. Stuff each pocket with a slice of garlic, using 3-4 of the cloves, and a few leaves of rosemary. Stuff some more inside the lamb, with some thyme, where the bone has come from. Put in a roasting tin, season well and cover with foil. Melt half the butter in a large frying pan. Fry the onions, stirring frequently, until softened and golden. Tip into a second large roasting tin. Cook the chopped mutton or lamb in the pan until brown. Add to the onions in the tin, and toss with the potatoes, carrots, remaining garlic and herbs (chopped), 2 tbsp of the flour and some seasoning. Pour the stock into the frying pan, then add the Worcestershire sauce and the remaining butter. When melted and boiling, pour over the potatoes, cover with foil and bake with the lamb for 1 hr. Uncover both the lamb and the hotpot, and cook for 45 mins more until the potatoes are golden and cooked all the way through. Allow the lamb to rest for 15 mins before carving. Leave the potatoes in the oven (covered if starting to brown too much) until ready to serve. Drain the fat from the lamb’s roasting tin, reserving the juices. Put the tin on the heat and stir in the remaining flour. Pour in 450ml boiling water or stock and stir until thickened to a gravy. Cut the hotpot into 8 and lift onto warmed plates. Carve the lamb into thick slices and place on top, then spoon round a little gravy. Serve with the green beans and spinach – add a little grated nutmeg to the spinach, if you like.

Be at one with nature by growing a turning into a tree after you die
Did you know that you can grow into a tree after you die? Bios Urn is a funerary urn made from biodegradable materials that will turn you into a tree after you die. Inside the urn there is a pine seed, which can be replaced by any other seed or plant, and will grow to remember your loved one. Bios Urn turns death into a transformation and a return to life through nature. When planted, the tree seed is nourished by and absorbs the nutrients from the ashes of your body which are contained inside. The urn itself is made from coconut shell and contains compacted peat and cellulose. The ashes are mixed with this, and the seed placed inside. You can even choose which type of tree you’d like to grow! Once your remains have been placed into the urn, it can be planted and then the seed germinates and begins to grow. You even have the choice to pick the type of plant you would like to become, depending on what kind of planting space you prefer. This could be a great way to help sustain the environment, contribute to the well-being of the ecosystem, and to know that the remains of your loved ones will live on through the beautiful expression of nature.

PROBIOTICS. Some microorganisms are an excellent tool to achieve and maintain a good state of health. Its effects are potentiated by the simultaneous administration of essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, as it produces synergy between them; these microorganisms are the so-called “probiotics”, they promote the assimilation of vitamins and minerals, and in turn make the survival of those who live in the intestine. Probiotics have been consumed for centuries around the world, in the form of fermented or cultured foods such as yogurt, cottage cheese and milk of grains. Within the most well-known probiotics are the Lactobacillus, found primarily in the small intestine and the Bifidobacteria in the large intestine. Benefits of probiotics - Probiotics stimulate the immune response by several routes, and decreasing the allergic symptoms of atopic dermatitis. - The probiotics also increase the levels of the B-cell type of lymphocytes, which are

Lawrence KingChiropracter, Fuente Alamo As a chiropractor who focuses on Structural Correction of the spine one the first questions I am asked is how we differ from what most people know as Traditional Chiropractic. So, before we get onto what makes us different, let’s take a minute to look at Traditional Chiropractic. Traditional chiropractors usually have three main goals: 1. To increase flexibility of the spine. 2. To reduce muscle tension. 3. To reduce pain. We agree these are good goals, and the majority of chiropractors we know do a great job in achieving these goals. As a chiropractor who focuses on Structural Correction, if we detect a Structural Shift of the spine, our goal is to guide the spine back towards what is considered normal. What is a Structural Shift? In all aspects of health to know if something is wrong we have an established ranges of normal, be it for blood pressure, body temperature or height/weight ratio. When we fall outside the normal ranges, health challenges start to present. This is no different in your spine. Whilst we are not looking for all spines to be structurally perfect, by understanding what is structurally normal we are able to detect, with a detailed objective Structural

Health &Wellbeing Examination, if a spine has shifted outside of normal ranges (a Structural Shift). When a Structural Shift is present it will often leads to a number of Secondary Conditions (commonly known as symptoms). What are Secondary Conditions? Whilst a Structural Shift in the spine may be obvious when advanced, it would often be difficult for us to know if one was present in our own bodies, just as it may be difficult to know if the foundations of our houses were un-level. It is often down the presence of Secondary Conditions (commonly known as symptoms) to advise us that something has shifted in our bodies. If we use the analogy of the house. From the outside it may be difficult for the untrained eye to see if there were problems with the foundation. However if we noticed a crack in the wall, or a floorboard came up and then the window started to creak, the presence of these Secondary Conditions would lead us to think there is likely a problem with the structure of the house. Applying this analogy to the spine it is often the presence of Secondary Conditions (symptoms) that signal something has shifted in the spine
Secondary Condition that may result from a Structural Shift in the spine include:Sciatica, Low Back Pain, Muscle Spasms, Neck Pain, Dizziness and Headache. If you suffer from any the symptoms described here, then please call us to arrange a consultation. Please keep an eye out for our monthly health related articles, which will give you the building blocks to make positive health choices.

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron’s disastrous start to 2014 had the inevitable consequences with the dismissal of Coach Antonio Lorente in mid March. After a run of 9 games in which only 5 points were gained, President Jose Rodriguez terminated Lorente’s contract and appointed Javi, the manager of the Club’s Cadetes team, as coach until the end of the season. Hopefully, Mazarron gained enough points in the first half of the season to avoid the disastrous prospect of relegation to the Segunda Autonomica. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to each away game, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach prices are 8€ for members and 10€ for non-members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Forthcoming fixtures are: Sunday 6th April CD Lumbreras (Away)

your stroke and reduce the activity of the wrists is to use an alignment stick. Place the stick into the back of the putter and into your sternum; make sure the stick is parallel to the putter shaft. As you make your stroke ensure the stick remains parallel to the shaft. Done correctly this will massively reduce the involvement of the wrists and provide you with greater control of the path and the loft of the putter resulting in a consistency of strike and better distance control. 2.Place down a marker about 10 foot away. Take 3 balls, putt the first ball aiming to finish about 1 foot past the marker, putt the second aiming to finish 1 foot short and finally try and finish with your third ball on the marker. This drill will help you on the course to adjust your speed for downhill and uphill putts when you have to aim either a foot short or a foot past the hole. 3.Lay two clubs on the ground parallel to each other about the width of your putter head apart. Place a ball between the clubs and make a putt. This drill ensures that you are swinging your putter in a straight path and not making and inside out swing. Having a putter that fits your size and stroke will improve your putting. To have your putter checked go to Golf Stop and for free I will check to see if your putter fits you.

Putting is one of the most important aspects of golf, fortunately though it is one of the easiest aspects of the game to improve and help lower your scores. Here is three simple drills you can do on the practice green to ensure your putter won’t let you down. Many club golfers struggle to hit a consistent speed with their putts and also struggle to hit their intended line. 1. New F1 rules 2014 New F1 rules have given teams their biggest challenge in years – and we explain the differences After years of stability, the technical rules that govern Formula One have been given a serious shake-up. In a bid to make the sport more relevant to the cars we drive, the new regulations centre on making F1 cars more efficient. So the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8s have made way for 1.6-litre turbocharged V6s, supplemented by two complex energy recovery systems. As we’ve already seen during pre-season testing, the new powertrains have given the teams plenty of headaches, but Mercedes and the Mercedes-powered Williams teams seem to have made the best of the new tech, showing their rivals the way. As you’d expect, up and down the grid, the new cars offer a range of solutions to the challenges presented by the new regs. Our handy guide breaks down the tech changes, and gives an idea of what the teams are up against. Eight-speed gearbox There are eight forward gears this year, not seven, but the ratios are fixed before the season starts. The gearbox has to cope with everything from the twists and turns of Monaco to the flat-out straights of Monza, but that shouldn’t be a problem given the extra torque from the turbocharged engines. As the tech is new, the FIA will let the teams change the ratios once this season. V6 engines F1’s ‘eco-friendly’ future means turbocharged, direct-injection 1.6-litre V6 engines. They produce around 650bhp at 15,000rpm, while the electric power boosts this by a further 160bhp. The new rules see the whole powertrain as a single entity, and each driver has five power units for the season – instead of eight engines. A change of any part like the turbo, exhaust or the
page 38
electronic control is seen by the FIA as using a sixth power unit, which incurs a 10-place grid penalty. Two hybrid systems This year, there’s one Motor Generator Unit (MGU-K) to harvest energy from the rear brakes, while the MGU-H uses heat from the turbo to generate electricity. Unlike last year’s drivercontrolled KERS, the new energy recovery system is fully automatic. It’s also twice as powerful, at 160bhp, and this is available for longer – up from 6.7 seconds to over 30 seconds per lap. 100kg fuel limit With only 100kg – about 100 litres – of fuel available per race, sophisticated electronics calculate the most efficient use of electric and engine power. The electric turbo spins up quickly, minimising turbo lag, but the big challenge is mixing the smoothness of conventional hydraulic brakes with the harvesting of electronic energy by the MGU-K system when the car slows. Harder tyres Pirelli will provide harder-compound tyres this year, and teams will have an extra set of tyres available for each race weekend. Plus, to ensure there’s no repeat of last year’s tyre problems, each squad must dedicate one of its eight days of in-season testing exclusively to work on tyres with Pirelli’s engineers. Lower noses and narrower front wings Noses have been lowered from 550mm to 185mm above the ground, in a bid to prevent cars launching themselves off other racers. But Red Bull’s ace designer, Adrian Newey, has already said that cars could end up submarining under the rear wheels instead. The front wing is no longer the same width as the car – it’s 1,800mm instead of 1,650mm. Again, this is down to safety, to stop drivers clipping each other’s wings, but it also has a big impact on aerodynamics. Raised weight limit The minimum weight of the car and driver has been increased from 642kg to 691kg to compensate for the extra technology that’s crammed into each car. The power unit has a minimum weight of 145kg, and the teams are struggling to keep the weight low. As every gram affects performance, expect F1 drivers to be skinnier than ever to make sure they get as close as possible to the minimum weight allowed.
www.thejournalspain.es
Single exhaust For 2014, the exhaust designs are simpler than in previous years. Instead of enormously complicated blown diffusers which used the engine’s exhaust gases under the car to reduce air pressure and increase downforce, there’s now a single central exhaust that exits at the rear of the car, behind the line of the rear axle. Simpler rear wing At the back, the wing now features a single top section. This still features the Drag Reduction System (DRS), although it can now open wider than before. The lower beam wing has been outlawed, but teams like McLaren have done a tidy job of using wing-shaped rear wishbones on the suspension to compensate for this lost downforce.
Ferrari world coming to Spain After Abu Dhabi, Europe is next in line to get its very own Ferrari amusement park. The Italian supercar-maker announced the news on Thursday stating that it sold the licensing rights for a new theme park and hotel to a company called PortAventura Entertainment S.A.U., a subsidiary of Investindustrial, which will build Ferrari Land inside the PortAventura resort, just outside Barcelona in Spain. it will have “exciting attractions for Prancing Horse enthusiasts of all ages, including Europe’s highest and fastest vertical accelerator”. The Ferrari-themed hotel that will be built inside the PortAventura resort, which currently welcomes around
4,000,000 visitors a year, will be “a luxury five-star establishment with 250 rooms, restaurants and a driving simulator,” according to a statement from the Italian company. Set to open for business in 2016, the Ferrari Land project in Spain will
Perrone also mentioned that Ferrari is looking at a number of options for future amusement parks. “We will continue to evaluate other proposals for theme parks outside Europe at our leisure: the brand is our most important asset and we have to enhance its value without diluting it,” he said.

Property, Financial and Legal DID YOU KNOW THAT?? We should all now be aware that every domestic property for sale in Spain requires an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as per the EC directive 2002/91/EC. In Spain it is known as the Certificado de Eficiencia Energetica (CEE) and is valid for ten years. It has derived from the worldwide initiative started in 1997 to address the issue of Greenhouse gases and forms part of the ‘Energy Performance of Buildings Directive’ (EPBD) The regulations require a prescribed test to be carried out in order to measure the efficiency of the property as a whole and all energy consuming elements that are integrated within it. The ratings are scaled from A to G, ‘A’ being the most efficient and ‘G’ being the least. PROPERTY FOR SALE If you intend to sell your property you will need an EPC before it is advertised. Property, Financial and Legal bills for a basketball court on Becker’s now former property.
Tennis Ace Loses Mallorca Home Due to Unpaid Bills Former tennis star Boris Becker has had his holiday villa on the island of Majorca confiscated by Spanish authorities after not paying a builder’s bill of €391,000. The six-time Grand Slam champion was told by a Palma judge that his ninebedroom property would be auctioned off for €7 million. The court’s decision stems from unpaid carpentry, plumbing and surfacing
one tennis star coughed up the sum to keep a hold of his holiday home. Becker will now also have to pay an extra €24,000 in court fees and interest.
His lawyer’s claim that it was the real estate agent who sold the villa to Becker who was accountable for the bills, was rejected by the judge. The heavily indebted Becker, now 46 and coaching world number 2 Novak Djokovic, purchased the property in the Spanish island of Majorca 17 years ago. It nearly went under the hammer in 2012 in a similar case involving a €276,162 bill owed to a local gardener. On that occasion, the former number

Welcome to this month’s write up. Last month we told you about the six puppies that the Spaniard could not afford to look after, they are all doing well, but if you want a pup you’ll have to be quick as there are only two left that want homes. Little Kira, with the broken hip is well on the mend, but she had a growth on one of her teats. Our vet operated and found that she had several; he removed them all along one side and sent them away for analysis. The final results are that after she has been spayed the remaining ones should just disappear. So in about a month she will have this operation and once she is fit and well she will be ready for her new home, she Kira is a very small dog, and is so friendly if you are considering an older dog she may be for you. We were called to a village near top Mazarron to help with a mother and pups that were living under a bridge. We managed to catch the mum and then located the pups in long vegetation at the side of a rambler. She had three pups but unfortunately one was dead, they were about a week old. We took them home and found that the mum, who we have called Cinders was not feeding the remaining two sufficiently; so we then started to bottle feed them. However after a week the little girl became dehydrated and died, followed by the boy another few days later. Our vet said that it was due to a herpes virus that the mother had passed it to the pups , Needless to say then that we had no chance at all of rearing these little Cinders ones. Cinders is due to be spayed shortly, she is a medium sized dog, a little timid but loves to play with the other dogs especially the littler ones. She too will be ready for homing soon. The horses and donkeys are now shedding their winter coats, getting ready for the warmer weather to come. If you have a couple of hours to spare a week then why not come and help muck out-groom , We would welcome the help, if that is not your thing what about giving a helping hand in one of our shops. We have one in Fuente Alamo, and one in MAZZARON TOWN. If you fancy helping at all please feel free to give
