JOURNAL

THE Dear Reader,

Welcome to the April 2015 edition of The Journal! What we love the most about doing the April edition is that the April fools gags start quite literally as you open the front page! We would be doing our readers an injustice if the upside down front cover was the only April fool’s joke, so keep your eyes peeled! Easter is upon us and hopefully some good weather too! (At the time of going to print is raining and windy!) If you are looking to enjoy the sunshine and the best views for miles around then head up to Cafeteria El Faro! They are only open during Semana Santa so don’t leave it too late! It is with great pleasure that we welcome our new Agony Uncle Paul Cosco to our magazine. Paul has decades of expertise in all areas of counselling therefore we are delighted to have him on board, delivering his own brand of no nonsense, honest, and fair advice. If you have a problem that you would like advice on, you can find Pauls e-mail address along with his column later in the magazine. While on the subject of welcoming people to the magazine, we want to give a special mention to Haydn and Melissa from Rudy´s on Camposol Sector B! These guys have been working really hard on their new project and we wish them every success! Also in this month’s magazine we have printed a letter from one resident on the subject of squatters on Camposol. This is not the first letter about squatters that we have received, and the issue seems to be a divisive one. Whatever your opinion may be on Squatters, one thing that no one in our community should have to tolerate is anti-social behaviour. Sadly these two things seem to go hand in hand in certain cases. If you have a view or opinion on this matter feel free to drop me an email. Lastly I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who makes this magazine possible. Our readers, advertisers, contributors and staff. Thank you, for making The Journal the region`s only award winning community magazine. Happy Reading!

the fraudsters. Of course they demanded another advance sum and when it had been handed over, the scammers disappeared. Police estimated that the fraud, which had been running since 2009 and was led by three alleged ringleaders, had scammed about â‚Ź30 million.

Hunt For Ten Fugitives On The Run In The Costas

previous eight have led to 65 out of 76 wanted fugitives being caught. Drugs lord Stephen Blundell was one of the most recent individuals to be found. The 36-year-old, from Merseyside, had fled the UK before being sentenced for a ÂŁ1 million heroin plot. He handed himself in to authorities in Tenerife. Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “Operation Captura has proved a huge success since it was launched in 2006 and the majority of individuals on our most wanted list have been captured.

A gang of scammers who targeted British pensioners with time-shares on the Costa del Sol to swindle their retirement funds has been busted in Malaga. The victims were tricked into giving up their savings with the promise that their properties would fetch a great price, then swindled again by the same people as they posed as lawyers who would take on their legal case. Spanish police announced they had arrested 60 people for their involvement in one of the biggest scam operations on the Costa del Sol. The victims are thought to number more than 500 people, most of whom were British citizens and not all of whom have been located, said Spain’s national police at a press conference in Malaga on Tuesday. The scammers had a simple way of operating. Approaching people by telephone “they offered to buy their timeshares at a very attractive price and asked for an advance handling fee,â€? explained Spain´s National Police in a statement. Victims shelled out between â‚Ź300 ($319) and â‚Ź50,000 each only to discover that the sale never went through and that they had fallen for a scam. Some of the victims were then contacted by the same group of fraudsters who posed as a law firm and offered to help by initiating legal proceedings against

Authorities have called on the public to help track down the ten most wanted fugitives believed to be on the run in Spain. Crimestoppers UK and the National Crime Agency (NCA) teamed up with Spain´s Interior Ministry to once again seek the public’s help to find Britain’s most wanted fugitives. The ten fugitives added to the list are wanted by UK law enforcement agencies in connection with crimes including rape, indecent assault of a child and drug trafficking. This is the ninth Operation Captura appeal to be made since 2006, and the

Peace Coin ‘Celebrates’ Franco Dictatorship

A new commemorative coin is causing controversy in Spain for celebrating “70 years of peace” - including 36 years of a fascist dictatorship. A new coin celebrating “70 years of peace” in Europe since the end of the Second World War has caused

controversy in Spain because nearly four decades of that time corresponds to the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. The coin, which bares the image of King Felipe VI, is seen as brushing aside the 36 years that Spain spent under the dictatorship of Franco, who seized power in a violent coup plunging the nation into a bloody civil war. “It’s a lack of respect to all those Spaniards who were denied democracy,” Said Emilio Silva, of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory. “In 1945 there were thousands of political prisoners - we were very very far from peace,” Silva, who campaigns for the rights of the families of civil war victims, it was a big mistake to make this new coin.” The €200) commemorative coin has been made by the Spanish Royal Mint as part of a Europe-wide series of collectable coins.

Priest arrested for exorcism on anorexic girl

A judge in Burgos has called for the arrest of exorcist, Jesús Hernández Sahagún, along with the girl’s priest after she went through 13 exorcisms while still a minor. Sahagún, the official exorcist of Valladolid, is facing charges of gender violence, causing injury and mistreatment according to local newspaper, Diario de Burgos, and has been asked to make a statement on the events. The events date back to 2012, when the girl began to suffer from anorexia. Her religious parents became convinced she was possessed by the devil and decided to have their child exorcised. It has been alledged that she was tied up and had crucifixes positioned over her head.

The girl subsequently attempted suicide and an investigation was launched after her aunts and uncles filed a complaint. In a statement the girl’s parents told the court that the exorcist was aware that the young girl was in medical treatment at the time and had full access to her clinical records. The priest reportedly assured the parents that the exorcism would not interfere with their daughter’s medical treatment, but voiced disapproval of the number of medicines the girl had been prescribed.

In an interview with El Mundo in December 2014, Hernández Sahagún defended the 13 exorcisms, explaining the girl was “possessed by the devil”. He also told the Spanish newspaper that he had performed 200 exorcisms over the past four and a half years.

In December 2014, the archbishop of Burgos issued a statement saying “the young woman’s suicide attempt was not a result of the exorcisms practiced on her.” He also defended exorcisms as “a religious practice maintained as part

There are currently around 15 priests in Spain with Church authorization to conduct exorcisms and in 2013 a specialist exorcism squad was chosen in Madrid to tackle the “unprecented rise in demonic possession”

In July 2014, Pope Francis made exorcisms official Catholic practice, with the Vatican hailing them as “a form of charity”.

re-set button on the meter.

Smart meter Over the past few weeks I have experienced quite a large volume of phone calls reporting that some customers are experiencing loss of all power to the property. At first this was a little bewildering until I came to realise that the roll out of the new smart meter was now in our area. This is the new meter being supplied and fitted by Iberdrola to replace all existing meters (not optional)! The new smart meter allows Iberdrola to read your meter electronically. The downside to the new smart meter is that the ICP switch (internal power control switch) is now installed into the meter itself, this means that whatever amount of electricity you are contracted to use coming into the property is controlled by this switch and should you attempt to use more electricity than you are contracted to the ICP will cut in and turn off the power coming into your property at the meter. Some of the new smart meters automatically re-set after you have turned the internal power off for three seconds, others have to be manually re-set by pushing a

2015

Further problems are arising as a result of the amount of power that you are contracted to use. Most properties built since 2002 are most likely contracted to 5.75kw this equates to an ICP switch of 25 amps so should you attempt to use more than this the meters ICP switch will cut off the power. Properties built before 2002 may be contracted to 3.3 kw this equates to an ICP switch of 15 amps. Most modern properties will struggle to operate using only 15 amps.

require the issuing of a Boletin (an electrical installation certificate). On properties built after 2002 it is unlikely that any work will be required to your property’s electrics but earlier properties may require some work to bring them up to current legislative standards (unfortunately I am not licensed to issue Boletins). If you have any questions concerning this information or any electrical matters feel free to contact ANDY’S ELECTRICAL SERVICES.

To find out what contract you have with Iberdrola look at the top of your bill for ‘POTENCIA CONTRATADA’ and there it will give you the amount in kilowatts. The only answer for properties that can’t manage on the contracted supply is to upgrade to a larger contract (this will result in an increased tariff) and will

Hundreds of cyclists struck down by poisonous caterpillars

The feeling has been likened to “lying in a patch of stinging nettles while being bitten all over by mosquitoes, and the feeling lasting for three days, then lessening for a few more days,” by one rider, who posted photos of the weals the beasts gave him online. More than 200 cyclists were attended by emergency medical units at the park, suffering from allergic reactions to the caterpillars. The nearby ‘Nuestra Senora de la Nieves’ health centre attended to a further 90 cyclists with the same allergic symptoms over the weekend

The first deputy mayor of Los Palacios, Carmen Maria Molina, has demanded ‘an urgent explanation from those responsible for La Corchuela park for what happened’, saying that the park authorities did not alert them to the 20% OFF HOME INSURANCE Until 1/6/15 presence of the Min premiums apply caterpillars.

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK

The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE

The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. SAILING FOR ALL OPEN DAY AT LOS ALCAZARES

Are you interested in trying sailing for the first time, or finding somewhere you can continue to enjoy the sport now you live in Spain? Well now’s your chance! The only multi-national sailing club on the Costa Calida, SAMM, invites you to their Open Day on Thursday 9th April 10am till 4pm at CTD, Los Narejos, Los Alcàzares on the Mar Menor. SAMM, or the Sailing Association Mar Menor to give it its full title, was formed in January 2006, and provides a host of opportunities to enjoy a range of sailing activities on the sunny waters of the Mar Menor and Mediterranean. After eight years, we have over 120 members and most belong to one of the ‘BoatShare Groups’ within SAMM that encompass a wide variety of boating interests. In a Boat-Share Group, the members all contribute equally to the costs of owning and using the boats (mooring fees, insurance and maintenance), which results in very economical sailing for everybody. The varied selection of Group boats include four dinghies, three 6 metre and two 6.5 metre day sailers, a 7 metre catamaran and a 7 metre Spanish motor boat. If you are into bigger boats the owners of three large cruisers, 9 TO 11 METRES, offer sailing opportunities, whilst, at the other extreme, another Group build, sail and race radio controlled model yachts. All Groups have access to the SAMM support boat, a Valliant DR450 Rib fitted with a 40HP outboard. The ‘Open day’ is being held at CTD or ‘Centro Technico Deportivo’ the Spanish sports academy situated right on the beach at Los Narejos which is the centre of our activities. Except for the large cruisers our boats are based there, the

We have involved Ismael Gomez councillor for foreign residents, which has got us nowhere. Nobody wants to arrest him because he makes sure he is always with the children, or they are in the house. Ismael maintains that this is a good enough reason not to arrest him? MASA told us, via a lawyer, that this man contacted them asking if he could buy the houses. At which point, he was ( regrettably ) informed that they were illegal and therefore not for sale. Clearly, this was exactly what the guy wanted to hear. Not so much different from the way he operated with BBVA bank. HE IS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR OTHER PROPERTY SO BEWARE!!! Watch out for anyone driving round showing interest in houses near you. Also, other families will soon get the idea they can do the same if we are not proactive We are doing everything in our power to shift this anti-social parasite, and we will continue to do so until he and his family go. We then intend to call for the two houses in question to be demolished, since they cant be sold or rented, and the land now belongs to Mazarron Council. We want to warn everyone about squatters, and the lengths they will go to, but we also want the support of the Council, The journal, the CRA, and any other group or individual who is/are concerned enough to join the growing number of people who will not tolerate these pests. In September 2015 Age Concern Costa Calida will celebrate its 5th Anniversary under the Presidency of Ann Lambert. Having achieved her original aims the President now plans to hand over the reins to a new incumbent, responsible for overseeing the voluntary work of Age Concern in South West Murcia. The postholder needs no specific qualifications but it would suit someone who works well as a team leader and values the welfare and wellbeing of older people. There are no specific hours of work as the daily running is carried out by other committee members. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a worthwhile contribution to our community and would like more information and an informal visit please contact Ann Lambert on 634 310216. We also need a publicity officer. This is a committee post but only requires a few hours a month for the right person to collate information and compile short articles for the local media. We are holding an OPEN DAY on

Age Concern provides services for anyone over 50. Our main function is welfare support to people who need assistance. For example we can provide someone to visit a housebound client while the partner is out. Or maybe to take a client shopping or even just for a coffee. Our Advice and Information service can help with lots of problems including applying for exportable benefits like Attendance allowance, disabled parking badges and help on discharge from hospital or following bereavement. We cannot offer care,

Technology bump up to Windows 10. The release timing and new upgrade scheme were revealed by Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson at the WinHEC technology conference in Shenzhen, China.

Windows 10 Upgrades Will We Free, Even For Pirates! Windows 10 IS coming this summer, Microsoft has confirmed, and will be free to anyone using Windows 7 or better. Even people who didn’t pay for it. That’s right, even Windows 7 and 8 users who don’t have a valid Windows license will get a free

It’s a surprising move given the importance that Microsoft has placed on Windows license revenue in the past, and the lengths Microsoft has gone to to prevent the spread of pirated copies of the operating system. But the company has spent the past year reinventing itself in many ways, including going so far as to announce a free version of Windows for devices with screens smaller than nine inches. Meanwhile, operating system pricing expectations have also been changing. Apple has offered free upgrades to OS X since 2013, and mobile operating system updates have long been free. Apple can make up for some of this lost revenue through increased hardware sales, and Microsoft is trying this strategy as well with its Surface tablet/ notebook hybrid and other new devices. But Google offers its Android mobile operating system for free, making money off mobile advertising and app sales in the Google Play Store. Microsoft may similarly see a free Windows 10 as the gateway to alternate revenue streams. The company

page 26

www.thejournalspain.es

now offers a range of cloud services, including Office 365, Skype and OneDrive, that Windows users may be more likely shell out for, even if they didn’t buy an operating system license. And even if those customers don’t end up buying cloud services from the company, at least they’re staying in the Microsoft ecosystem. Last quarter Microsoft’s revenue from consumer licensing — including both Windows and Office — accounted for only 16 percent of the company revenue, down from 23 percent the previous year. With Apple and Google Chromebooks slowly eating into Microsoft’s market share, the company could be thinking that a non-paying customer is better than no customer at all. The company could also be worried about leaving millions of machines running outdated operating systems and software. Unpatched systems can spread malware and viruses, and releasing security updates for decades old platforms is costly. Microsoft has been campaigning to get users to retire Windows XP and the Internet Explorer 6 web browser, but China has been particularly slow to upgrade both. To make matters worse, the Chinese government, which has long clashed with Microsoft over piracy, even banned the use of Windows 8 on government computers largely due to concerns over upgrade costs. The move to simply give away updated copies to pirates could ensure that Microsoft doesn’t end up in the same situation again. But regardless of the reason, it’s certainly a change of direction for the company. And welcome news to those who acquired Windows through less than legal means.

SELF-DRIVING CARS WILL MAKE US WANT FEWER CARS Mercedes is preparing customers for a future in which self-driving car design will be fundamentally different from what they’re used to. The companies developing self-driving cars say handing control over to the machines will make the future a far better place. Once robot chauffeurs are here, they say, the number of car crashes will plummet. Liberated from the need to keep our hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, drivers will

2015

become riders with more time for working, leisure, and staying in touch with loved ones. We’ll free ourselves from the archaic model of the multi-car household. And we won’t waste so much space parking the damn things. The advent of vehicles that drive themselves will provide “completely new possibilities for improving highway safety, increasing environmental benefits, expanding mobility, and creating new economic opportunities for jobs and investment.” The idyllic picture painted by automakers and regulators may sound overblown, but a new report says it is, for the most part, accurate. Automakers expect to introduce autonomous technology in phases, rolling out the cool new features in otherwise conventional cars. In three to five years, we can expect cars to do the heavy lifting during traffic jams and highway cruising, but cede control to their carbonbased occupants the rest of the time. Beyond that comes the more difficult challenge of driving in urban arenas, where there are far more obstacles and variables, like pedestrians, cyclists, cabbies and the like. That’s a tougher nut to crack, but our cars will become increasingly autonomous over the next 25 years, and we can expect them to be fully autonomous by 2040. Without the need for a human at the helm, one autonomous vehicle could take the place of two conventional/archaic ones. We’re already well on the way. Google’s fleet of self-driving cars has logged more than 700,000 miles without causing an accident. And the MercedesBenz robo-car concept has been roaming San Francisco. The report, based on research by analysts and interviews with industry experts, buys into this idea of gradual introduction, and divides its findings in three phases. In the first, which runs through 2020 or so, the impact of autonomous technology will be limited: While self-driving vehicles already have infiltrated industrial and controlled settings like farms and mines, passenger vehicles will remain in the prototype and testing phase. This jibes with the timelines laid out by the companies like

2015

Mercedes and Nissan, which plan to offer cars with autonomous features by 2020. Audi’s shooting for roughly the same date, and while Volvo is targeting 2017 for a large-scale, real-world test involving 100 customers. The technology will experience growing pains between 2020 and 2035 as the technology begins entering the mainstream. This will require regulators around the world to create comprehensive rules regarding how these cars are developed, tested, approved and licensed. Insurance companies will need to figure out how to change their basic model—drivers pay for individual coverage—to a system where automakers purchase insurance in case of technical failures. Wider adoption of the technology could have ancillary impacts, as well. Independent repair shops will become less relevant, for example, as remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates become commonplace, and fewer accidents—one promised benefit of autonomous technology—could mean fewer repairs. Cabbies and Uber drivers will become irrelevant. So to could long-haul truckers. Meanwhile, consumers will start to really get accustomed to the idea of giving up the wheel, and they’ll probably like it. Safety benefits should come quickly, as precursors to full autonomy have already had an impact: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports a 7 percent reduction in crashes among cars that have a basic forwardcollision warning system. Include automatic braking features, and that number is 14 to 15 percent, according to Consumer Reports. More self-driving will mean bigger reductions, which is why autonomous features are a big part of Volvo’s plan to eliminate deaths and serious injuries in its cars by 2020. And given how much time Americans waste in traffic—111 hours annually per driver, per a study by INRIX—that means anyone with one of these cars will be able to significantly boost their productivity. Beyond 2040 But it’s in Phase 3, after 2040, that the fun begins. This is the point where autonomous cars become our primary means of transport, and all the rules are up for debate. Just as car design will fundamentally change once

things like forward-facing seats, mirrors, and pedals are no longer necessary, the way we structure physical space could evolve: McKinsey predicts that by 2050, we might need just 75 percent of the space we now reserve for parking our cars. Because this is America, that means we get back 5.7 billion square meters of space—enough to hold the Grand Canyon and then some. That’s because autonomous cars can pack themselves together tightly (no need to allow space for human to exit). More than that though, our entire idea of car ownership could change. Currently, cars sit unused about 95 percent of the time. That leaves a lot of room for improvement in terms of how we allocate resources. We won’t stop buying cars altogether—people will still want the option to “independently drive and use the vehicle, and have fun doing so,” says Kaas— but we will buy fewer cars. Without the need for a human at the helm, one autonomous vehicle could take the place of two conventional vehicles: If Joan is going golfing and Joe needs to go shopping, a single car could drop Joan off at the club, swing back to the house to take Joe to the supermarket and back, then return to the club and get Joan. Kaas also predicts you could see the rise of private commuting services, shuttling customers around for a fee. The recurring theme in the McKinsey report is that the consumer wins. Yes, cars crammed full of high-end technology will likely cost several thousand dollars more than they do today. But “drivers” will save money in the form of regained time (spend your commute working instead of driving!) and many fewer accidents: McKinsey pegs the savings on repair and health care bills alone at $180 billion in the US, predicting a 90 percent drop in crashes. The economic boon from increased productivity is harder to quantify and McKinsey doesn’t offer a number. After all, there’s no guarantee people will use their commute times to work instead of nap, text, or hone their Candy Crush skills. But the general outlook is clear: In a world where we don’t drive, we’re better off.

‘Cafe con leche’ ‘Americano’ and ‘Cortado’ must surely, by now, be terms as commonplace amongst ex-pats in Spain as the more potent ‘Asiatico’ and ‘Belmonte’. Yes, we drink a lot of coffee in Spain, when out and about, seeing as tea, made by even the most enthusiastic Spaniard, often isn’t their strong point. Coffee is most definitely a way of life on the Costas, yet I’ve never been tempted to go as far as a feather spitting Espresso. Tar should be kept for road surfacing, I feel. A few roads spring to mind. Jars of ‘instant’ aside (useful in a domestic emergency capacity) all those bags of coffee, and indeed coffee grounds, must form an integral part of recycling in our modern society. Remember the butter mountain? There must surely somewhere, be a coffee mountain? What happens to all these coffee grounds once we’ve slurped our way through the annual allowance? Is there a brown hill somewhere near Madrid, The Sierra Nespresso, bulldozed

there by cafe owners the length and breadth of the peninsular, or does it all get flushed down the drain, and end up mixed with the sand on the beaches?

scatter the grounds over the ashes before removing them and they’ll act like a blanket as you take the offending item outside. Voilà! Clean surfaces!

There’s a cafe near us which gives away used bags of coffee grounds for customers who feel the need to chuck it on the garden and fend off the ants and slugs, or make scented candles, so I took a bag, and decided to do some further ‘digging’.

There’s one more. Tip some in a bowl, stick it in the back of the fridge, or freezer, and have an odour free chilling machine in a short slurp.

There’s an awful lot of coffee in Brazil, it seems, but there’s an awful lot of dregs just waiting to be used up in the most novel ways. Ladies, if you grab a good handful, mix it with a little warm water and rub it on your thighs, twice a week, and you’ll be cellulite free in four weeks. If you already have the limbs of nubile goddesses, then have a facial. Take two tablespoons of used coffee grounds, mix with the same amount of cocoa powder, add three tablespoons of whole milk or heavy cream, add some honey and you have an all natural alpha hydroxy, antioxidant facial. You can even make it into caffeinated soap. You can take a handful, rub it into wet hair pre shampoo, to break up all the product build up and restore shiny, healthy tresses, or add some olive or almond oil and create a top to toe body scrub. But it was the household uses that proved equally interesting, especially for us log burner owners well used to a micro-fine layer of dust from ash pans around our pristine villas. Gently

Best get down the nearest ‘cafeteria’ and beg, borrow, or sneak around the back to the bins.

Here’s what Twitter had to say about the disruptive approach to scl ntwrkng: We’re doing this because we believe that by eliminating vowels, we’ll encourage a more efficient and “dense” form of communication. We also see an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream. How did they come up with this amazing concept? Then later that night, I was watching “Wheel of Fortune” and a contestant yelled out ‘I wanna buy a vowel’. Everything just sort of clicked. B Clean Community News Letter

We extend a big ‘thank you’ to all B Sector residents who joined our B Clean Legally Registered Community Group last year. The funds received through your subscriptions and other donations, have helped immensely towards our continuing efforts to keep B sector looking great. Initially it took a while for the number of members to grow, but as the year progressed the subscriptions gradually increased. As a result we are now seeing steady improvements to the landscape; more trees are being planted, scrub areas being tidied and graveled, and shrubs are beginning to flourish. Along with everything that we have been able to achieve from your subscriptions we have also been successful in engaging with Council representatives who have responded by carrying out many of the much needed reparations in the area. Over the next few weeks we will also be assisting with fixing the long awaited Street Names to our roads. This year we propose to continue clearing scrub land, membrane, gravel and plant more areas – including the road connecting B4 to B9 (which also includes B7) and the perimeter road C/ Cueva del Peliciego (B1, B2 & B3). However to enable us to carry out this work we urgently NEED funds! So, we

hope all current members will continue with their subscriptions, (now due for the current year) and we are appealing to every other resident of B Sector to join the scheme and help us make it the area we can all be proud to live in. The sum that has been agreed is 5 Euros per month. Many who have already registered to join the scheme prefer to pay the annual sum of 60 Euros ‘up front’ Bank Account Details: Account Name: ‘B Clean Gardening Group’. Account Number: laCaixa ES72 2100 6032 8802 0003 3968 Payment may be paid as follows:In cash at laCaixa, giving your name and ‘Subscription’ as the reference, to the above account. Standing Order from your own Bank, on a 3, 6 or 12 monthly basis, to the above account. Internet Banking to the above account using ‘Subscription’ as a reference. In cash to Sandy. If you wish to join the Scheme, or currently subscribe but wish to alter the way you pay, please confirm with Sandy which method of payment you will be using. ‘B Clean’ meetings are held at ‘Trevi Bar’ on last Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. Please join us and let us know what

you want us to do to improve B Sector. The ‘Working Group’ meet every Tuesday morning 08.30 to 10.30 For more Information; SANDY (Treasurer): 968986030 email sanandstu@gmail.com HELEN (Secretary) : 968199506 email helenwhite522@gmail.com

Some of the new trees will replace those ravaged by the frosts and icy winds and we’ve had to replace many tree ties and two taps on the watering system, also split by the severe weather. Health &Wellbeing DO YOU HAVE SPRING FATIGUE??

In spring we hear everywhere about fatigue, generalized weakness that is caused by temperature changes and excessive light. The body is exhausted, lacking in vitality and strength due to food deficiencies because in winter is consumed conserved foods that have a low intake of vitamins and minerals. Causes of spring fatigue: During the winter, our body runs low in hormones such as serotonin (the stress buster and happiness booster) due to shorter daylight hours and dopamine (the motivation hormone) due to decreased physical activity. There is also an increase in cortisol (the stress hormone) due to increased environmental threats. As result, some of us feel lethargic, less motivated, low in vitality, and tired, especially toward the end of the winter season. Hormonal imbalance caused by excess sun-light: We have light receptors on our eyes; the receptors perceive sun light and adjust the production of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that induces sleep and sleepiness. The more light our eyes receive, more melatonin our body will produce and vice versa, that is the reason why, during the spring, since our eyes receive more light during more hours, this hormonal imbalance may be behind of the causes of spring asthenia. Decreased in the level of beta endorphins: Beta endorphins are hormones that at a medium/high level provoke feelings of calm and wellbeing. Due to the lower levels of this hormone, feelings of anxiety, negativity, and sadness can appear. Allergies caused by too much pollen and dust. Symptoms of spring fatigue include loss of appetite, constant tiredness, difficulty in attention and concentration, unrefreshing sleep and sleepiness, headaches, impaired judgment, altered sensory perception, slow reflexes and responses to stimuli,

lack of motivation, poor immune function, and negative effects on memory, critical thought, reaction time, mood, anxiety, energy level, digestion, and blood pressure. How to improve spring fatigue symptoms: Ginseng, Eleutherococcus, and Rhodiola. Which increases the Physical and mental Response, reduce fatigue and help the immune system. Others, such as guarana or mate , we offer its stimulating and invigorating effect.Eat raw fruits and vegetables to benefit from vitamins directly from the source. Drink tea, whitch improves cognitive functions. Eat black chocolate in small quantities. It increases the level of endorfins in our brain, solving the symptoms of sadness, negativity, etc Prevention and treatment for spring fatigue: If ignored, spring fatigue can turn into depression, which is why its prevention is the best solution, especially if you suffered of some symptoms in previous years. Exercising and spending time outdoors are two excellent ways to fight spring fatigue. Combine the two solutions and do as much outdoor activities as you can to accelerate the transition to a better state of mind. This is all for now. If you have any question about Spring Fatigue, do not hesitate and ask to Camposol pharmacy team. By Jose Luis Martínez-Lozano Martínez (pharmacist).

Dear Paul’s Problem Page Dear Paul I am a 38 year old woman, divorced with no children. I came over to Spain to help take care of my ailing mother. My father continued to work while I cared for her day in and day out for two and a half years. I borrowed £8.000 from my father to help pay for my living expenses during that time. After she passed away, my father collected her life insurance and works pension. Imagine my surprise when I not only received nothing from her life insurance money, but was also presented with the bill for the money I borrowed! It’s been more than a year now since she died and I have started to make a life for myself here. I have as yet not paid any of the money back and every time I see my father, he never fails to bring up the fact that I “owe”

Sponsored by Camposol Farmacia

him. Should I just pay the money and keep quiet, or should I present him with my own bill for the two and a half years of my life that I gave up? Missing Mom Dear Missing, I am very sorry about your loss and know this must still be a difficult time for you and your father.Your father must be very confident that he’s going to live robustly and just about forever, because it’s hard to imagine you are going to work up much interest in caring for him when he’s ailing. It’s too bad you didn’t get more clarity at the beginning of your mother’s illness about how you would support yourself when you came over, putting your own life on hold to help ease the end of hers. Your father is not only cheap; he’s cruel. It sounds as if you didn’t know that about him, but presenting you with a bill for the meagre living expenses he “loaned” you while caring for your dying mother is pretty irrefutable evidence. You need to have a conversation, not a confrontation, with your father about what’s happened over the last few years. Explain to him that it was worth it to you to put your life on hold temporarily to help your mother and ease the burden on him. Say you’re sure it would pain her to know that her illness has come between you and him all because of money. Tell him it was your mistake (and it was!) that you did not clarify with him in the beginning how you would support yourself during this difficult time for you all. Make it clear that you have no regrets in doing what you’ve done, but he needs to be realistic about what the cost of a stranger helping them during that time would have amounted to. Explain you are deeply hurt and shaken that he is asking for it back. Acknowledge that her life insurance and pension should go to him, but you think your mother would have wanted some portion of it to help you get started in building your new life here in Spain. Make him aware that should it ever be necessary, you would willingly give the same care to him as you did to your mother. Bottom line is you borrowed the money so you must be prepared to pay it back if he is not going to be reasonable about it. However your father responds the best tribute you can make to your mother’s memory is to go forward and have a full and satisfying life of your own. Paul

Health &Wellbeing Dear Paul I am divorced and live in a gated complex with my 7-year-old daughter. There is a man we run into at the pool constantly— he is a wonderful person and very nice to my daughter. I have absolutely no romantic interest in him, but it is clear that he would like to be more than friends. Usually we chat about current events, but this past weekend he came over to me, suntan lotion in hand, and asked whether I would “do his back.” I am squeamish generally, and he has a hairy, acne-covered back! I applied the lotion, but I do not want to do it again. I feel he crossed a very obvious line. What should I say if he asks again? Greasy Dear Greasy, I’m baffled that you were not able to refuse this creepy request by saying, “Sorry I don’t do backs.” He may be the wonderful person you say he is, but your description clearly indicates he’s no Brad Pitt! Since it’s obvious he’s interested in you, he should have asked you out long ago. Then you could have declined, and you two could just be neighbours. But now you’re stuck by the pool worrying that he’s going to come up with some new creative way to get you to stroke him like a hairy, acne-ridden dog! Since this guy is unavoidable, and since he hasn’t actually menaced you, you need to handle him gently but firmly. This means being polite but not chatty. It may mean picking up to go shortly after he appears at the pool (a “See you later” will do).You may even need to go to another pool, so your daughter can swim elsewhere. You want to reduce your interactions with this guy to a minimum. If he asks you where you’ve been, just say you’ve been busy. Should he get the nerve to ask you out, tell him you’re not on the market.

Paul Dear Paul I recently signed up for a walk to help raise money for a worthy local cause. I sent out e-mails to friends, family, and old colleagues asking for support. I stated that even a €1.00 donation would be appreciated. I’m delighted with the amount I’ve been able to raise, and for those who have not donated, I understand that it’s not everybody’s cause, money is tight, some people don’t like to donate online, etc. I don’t harbour any resentment. However, there are a few people on the list for whom I have done significant favours for in the past. Giving lifts to the airport, taking shopping, designing business cards and brochures, buying junk for a child’s school fundraiser. One friend even requested a donation on behalf of a cancer walk! I happily gave my time and money, never even considering some sort of payback. So now I find myself dismayed at both their reactions and mine. Not even €1.00— really? Should I send a reminder e-mail or say something? It feels so petty, but I’m having trouble letting it go. Favourless Dear favourless So deeply embedded is our sense of fairness, that we all at times can feel aggrieved when it seems it is being violated. You say you completely understand that not everyone you asked is going to cough up a sponsorship. You also say you did

the favours without any expectation of reciprocation. But then, there you’ll be, muttering the entirety of your walk, “That’s the last time I help you with a lift to the airport!” “Want a business card? Design it yourself!” “By the way, I’m no longer buying your kids’ junk.” “I support cancer walks—that’s why I’m sponsoring someone else!” Woe betide whoever is walking in front of you as you as you trudge along spitting blood! We all keep a mental tally of favours done, and it seems like a breach when a request as small as yours goes unanswered. But keep in mind that a mass e-mail feels impersonal, and even if people meant to contribute, your e-mail was soon swamped by the daily deluge. So go ahead and send another one. Then, for the sake of your mental health, and your relationships with people who may not have meant to snub you, but just didn’t bother to hit the “contribute” button, give them a pass and let it go. Camposol Club de Golf Camposol Club de Golf Monthly Competition February 2015 Another excellent competition. 55 players had a shotgun start in near perfect weather. A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. We would like to thank our Sponsor, Spice Villa for their much appreciated contribution to the prize fund and to The Club House Director Stuart Fearn who kindly agreed to present the prizes. Pictured Paul Waugh & Stuart Fearn.

Windy weather!! On Wednesday 25th the society gathered at the Camposol Club de Golf for the monthly Stapleford competition, which turned out to be a very windy affair! With a split start on tees 1 & 10 we set off in the hope that we might get round in good time, for a change, but that soon changed as the wind got up, and balls were increasingly difficult to control. Some members did seem to take more than the allotted time in looking for a lost ball. At the end of the round we gathered to check out the scores, and the following top three scores were posted. Winner George Bricknal - 36points (pictured) 2nd tie Geoff Sharp - 35points Paul Allsop - 35points 3rd Mike Harrison - 33points Nearest the pin winners were John Taylor, and Bob Skinner. We will have played our next game at Lorca by the time you read this, and the April game is booked for the 22nd at Paraleja Golf. Meet at 10am for an 11am start. One event not to be missed is the summer social evening which this year will be on the 17th June and will be in the form of a Tapas evening with music by Martin Ross. It is to be held at the Buenavista Social Club with it’s wonderful views over Mazarron bay. Family and friends are welcome, so please let Joe Chalk know if you are interested in going. LATEST NEWS With only one point from four games including the home game against CD Esparragal on 15th March, Mazarron’s season was in danger of falling away. Other team’s results, however, meant that they were still three points clear of seventh position in a play-off position. Tolo had taken his goals tally for the season to 26 and he led his leading rival in the league goalscoring charts by seven goals. However suspensions to goalkeeper Conejo and defender Juan Lorca meant that Mazarron were without two key players for the games against fourth placed CD Esparragal and third placed La Hoya Lorca. It is hoped that a good run of results to the end of the season will still result in a play-off position. Mazarron’s home games are normally

for any other model currently, but Ford claims since models such as the Kuga, Focus and new Mondeo already have Traffic Sign Recognition and an adjustable speed limiter, it could easily be fitted to these models in the near future.

Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter could end speeding

Aston Martin GT3 renamed GT12 after Porsche dispute

The Intelligent Speed Limiter uses a windscreen-mounted camera to monitor road signs and can adjust the car’s electronic limiter down to that level without driver intervention. It also gathers information from the car’s navigation system to ensure that the set speed is always accurate. The Ford system can be activated or turned off via steering wheel mounted controls, and uses fuel starvation rather than the brakes to reduce the vehicle’s speed. It can be overriden by pressing the accelerator. Ford is quick to point out that it is not looking to completely control vehicle speed in all senses. Safety supervisor Stefan Kappas says it aims to help those who stray accidentally above the posted limit from avoiding prosecution. “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail” he elaborates. The new tech isn’t confirmed

page 38

Aston’s disagreement stems beyond personal feelings, as the spokesman claimed the press or public don’t consider GT3 a specific brand name “as they, like us, use ‘GT3’ to describe the origins and characteristics of certain types of car”. It’s a questionable move from Porsche as Bentley, another VWGroup subsidiary, has a GT3-branded version of its Continental GT on sale. Despite the disagreement between the two firms, Aston refuses to get involved in a legal fracas that could cost time and money, and “would prefer to focus our energy and investment on the car and on making sure our customers receive the best possible Aston Martin”.

Ford announces automatic speedlimiting tech on new Ford S-MAX SUV, will roll out across its range soon after Ford’s European arm is leading the charge against speeding (accidental or otherwise) thanks to new tech which can read road signs and automatically slow the car to match the posted speed. It’s set to debut first on the new S-MAX people carrier, and will roll out across larger models in the range soon after.

name on its hardcore 911 GT3 sports cars). Aston disagrees with this claim, saying the name has “global recognition” as a racing series, in which many brands produce GT3 race cars.

Aston Martin has confirmed it will be changing the name of its Vantage GT3 to ‘ GT12’ due to a battle with Porsche over rights An Aston Martin spokesman has confirmed the brand will be changing the name of its motorsport-derived Vantage GT3 due to a legal dispute with Porsche. First seen at the Geneva Motor Show last month, the new model will now be called the ‘Vantage GT12’ because Porsche claims it has exclusive rights to the GT3 moniker. The dispute is claimed to have been dragged out over a few months, and involves Porsche’s claim that it exclusively owns the ‘GT3’ branding when it comes to production road cars (as it has used the

To avoid the issue, the track-biased new Vantage GT3 will now adopt the ‘GT12’ moniker instead, which itself “captures the spirit of GT racing in all its forms and, of course, nods to the V12 engine”. In the spirit of long-standing British humour and one-upmanship, GT’12’

Hamilton to race an Audi in British Touring Car Championship Nicolas Hamilton, the brother of Formula 1 World Champion Lewis, will this season become the first disabled

competitor to participate in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. The 22-year-old, who lives with the neurological condition Cerebral Palsy, will enter five events of the 2015 BTCC season, competing in an Audi S3 with the Essex-based AmD Tuning team. Hamilton, who has previously competed in the Renault Clio Cup and European touring cars, will begin his 2015 race programme at Croft circuit on 27-28 June, before continuing his season at Snetterton, Rockingham, Silverstone then concluding at the Brands Hatch finale. He said: “I’m coming into the championship with a lot to learn and my

expectations are to develop as a driver as my programme across the season progresses. While I’m aiming to improve as a driver, I’m also hoping to inspire others to strive for their own personal goals, whatever their situation in life. “Anyone can exceed expectations in one way or another and I hope to prove that when I race alongside not just ablebodied drivers, but the best touring car drivers in the UK.” AmD Tuning team boss Shaun Hollamby said: “BTCC is a fiercely competitive series with hard wheel-to-wheel racing action on track and we have developed Nicolas’s 2015 program to ensure he enters the championship with a level of preparation. We have a number of test sessions over the coming months, which will enable him to acclimatise to the car. Hamilton will run as a ‘guest’ entrant in the five events he undertakes because he does not hold the BTCC licence needed to be eligible for points in the championship.

Property Purchases Increase 40% in Barcelona Experts have been claiming for the last year that the property sector in Spain is well into its recovery now after six years of falling prices and sales. The areas that have recuperated the fastest are the large

cities plus some areas that are popular with foreign buyers. And while we reported last week that property purchases and prices rose for the first time annually in 2014, the rate at which the sector is recuperating is not even throughout the country. And this

management, property purchases went up 40% during the first quarter of 2015 when compared to the same period the previous year. The fact that prices have stabilized in Barcelona, together with forecasts for this city pointing to a growth in purchases have led to a reactivation of demand and properties being quickly snapped up by investors and buyers. Investors are now looking once more at obtaining residential assets in Spain’s second largest city, mainly due to the fact that there is no money to be made purely through depositing money in the bank. In fact, figures show that 90% of all operations in Barcelona were carried out

Here we are coming into springtime. You may remember the pony and donkey that we were asked to take from the Pererra last month, well they are both doing well in the riding stables in Cartagena, Phoenix is a little darling as is Romero the donkey who has now been castrated . This month however saw Lola one of our donkeys having colic. For those of you who are not sure what colic is,it’s a blockage !!!! In most cases we walk them a little and the more they walk .... It hopefully gets the intestines moving and causes the blockage of food to pass out . Problem with Lola was that we walked her but nothing happened so of course the vet was called. He put a tube up her nose and into her stomach where water was introduced and her stomach was emptied . A couple of hours later and all appeared to be ok, she wanted to eat, but needed to be starved until the following morning. She went to bed as usual but the following day she seemed lethargic

We decided that we would take Twigglet her best friend to see her in the hope it would spur her on ........ That was two days ago and it’s worked as both are coming home tomorrow she still has approx 8 weeks of convalescing to do. We hope she will thrive back in her home environment.....this has been the worst 2 weeks of our lives . The operation did not come cheep the cost of this one is in the region of 3000€. Many many thanks to donations from local people and “Facebook” we have raised half the money to date. If you would like to help we still need to find 1.500 eu .... a lottery win would be good lol, if you can help in any way please give me a call 690 906 565 , you can also donate your unwanted items to be sold in our shops. I will be on Camposol B car park between 11.30 & 13.30 every monday where you can drop off you unwanted goods / donate or simply have a chat . All our work we do daily is on face book we have No back up from large charities and No celebrities backing us ........ We are very committed and dedicated to the animals . Until next month take care Andrea .

and now did not want anything to eat. The vet was called and he examined her again. After a discussion with him it was decided that Lola needed to go to hospital ASAP. A couple of hours later and we were in San Vicente veterinary hospital in Alicante. A thorough examination, X-rays and ultrasound revealed that Lola had a severe blockage of the small intestine and an operation was urgently needed to save her life by now it is 11.30 pm .......... the surgeon and the anaesthetic team were called and the operation began . I left the hospital at 2 am the operation was still on going , At 4.30am I got the call that the operation was now complete and Lola had survived and was back in the recovery stable but as she was still so poorly a vet would stay with her until the “day staff” came on duty and monitor her constantly. The next 72 hours would be crucial to her wellbeing. I went to the hospital that morning and I was shown a large stone, at first I thought that she had somehow eaten it, but no it was a mineral stone, similar to gall stones and basically like the fur in the kettle. It had built up over several years that now became so large it caused the blockage after 2 days Lola developed Hyperlaepemia which means that she wants to eat but can’t ,the blood sugar separates, her glucose level should be 100 .... Lola’s went through the roof to 1.580 .....Lola was now critical, I visited Lola every day and spent hours sat in her stable talking to her .... No way was I going to let her leave us, so many tears have been shed I can tell you ,she was now hooked up to 3 drips, 24 hrs and she started showing signs of improvement, another 48 hrs on the drips saw her getting better , now the problem was she needed to eat !

MAD ARTICLE for April 2015 We are going to be working in collaboration with a local primary school. The most sought-after items in our shops and outreach are children’s clothing and shoes. In return for collecting donations of these items at the school, we are looking for volunteers to spend an hour or two speaking, singing and playing games with the pupils, so they get used to the native accent and gain confidence when speaking English. Contact Jenny on 677 318 605 if you are interested. We are also looking for children’s books and games that can be used at the school. Please spare this a thought if you have any such items no longer in use. Thanks to Francisco Garcia, Mayor of Mazarrón, we have been able to purchase a laptop and finally enter the 21st century by computerising our outreach client files. If anyone out there has experience of computer programming and would like to give us a hand taking this to the next level, please get in touch with Jenny on the number above. By the time you read this, our Spring Summer fashion show will have taken place. Photos will be included in next month’s article. Many thanks to Marvellous Marge and her team for all their hard work in putting this event together - Beautiful people, inside and out. Our gratitude also goes to the Cloud Nine Drama Group who donated 300€ after their pantomime performance of Aladdin. In addition, we continue to receive generous donations and support from the Mazarrón Bowls club, Mazarrón Ladies’ Circle, the Welcome Group and the Sewing Club. We appreciate that there are so many other worthy causes and charities providing indispensable services out there; we are often astounded by the generosity shown to us by our kind supporters. We couldn’t make a difference without you and words cannot express our gratitude sincerely enough. Our van is on Sector A car park from 11.30-1.00 every Tuesday. It is only on Sector B when there is a Table-top sale (2nd and last Friday of every month) and not every week. Thanks to a new volunteer, John, we are also able to offer the van for collections on MCC (opposite the Community Centre) every Monday from 11.00-1.00. We can be contacted at madmazarron@live.com. Thank you once again to all the groups, businesses and individuals who help us make a difference in Mazarrón.

Three men walk into a bar. The barman tells them, “If you can sit in my basement for a day, I’ll give you free beer forever.”

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink, and while he’s drinking, the monkey jumps all over the place, eating everything behind the bar. Then the monkey jumps on to the pool table and swallows a billiard ball.

The first man walks out after five minutes and says, “It’s impossible, you got a swarm of flies in there.”

The bartender screams at the guy, “Your monkey just ate the cue ball off my pool table -whole!”

Finally, the third man goes down. When he returns a day later, the others ask him how he did it.

“Sorry,” replied the guy. “He eats everything in sight. I’ll pay for everything.”

He says, “Easy! I took a dump in one corner and sat in the other corner!”

The man finishes his drink, pays and leaves. Two weeks later, he’s in the bar with his pet monkey, again. He orders a drink, and the monkey starts running around the bar. The monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his ass, pulls it out and eats it. The bartender is disgusted. “Did you see what your monkey did now?” he asks. “Yeah,” replies the guy. “He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he swallowed that cue ball, he measures stuff first.”

Last month’s Suduko answers

So the second man tries his luck, but can’t take more than an hour.

Father Flanagan, an elderly priest invited Father O’Connell, a younger priest from a neighbouring parish who was fresh from the seminary, over for dinner. During the meal, the young priest couldn’t help noticing how attractive and shapely the house keeper was. Over the course of the evening he started to wonder if there was more between the elderly priest and the housekeeper than met the eye. Reading the young priest’s thoughts, the elderly priest volunteered, “I know what you’re thinking, but I assure you our relationship is purely professional.” About a week later the housekeeper came to the elderly priest and said, “ Father Flanagan, ever since Father O’Connell came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don’t suppose he took it do you?”

The priest said, “Well, I doubt it, but I’ll write him a letter.” So he sat down and wrote: “Dear Father O’Connell I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation at dinner the other night and hope we have the opportunity to do so again. On another matter. We had a beautiful silver ladle which was a gift from a parishioner that comes to visit from time to time. The ladle is missing and I would be very embarrassed to invite her over and she notices the missing ladle. It is very important that it be found. Now, I’m not saying that you ‘did’ take a gravy ladle from my house, and I’m not saying you ‘did not’ take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here.” Several days later the elderly priest received a letter from the young priest which read: “Dear Father Flanagan, I also enjoyed our dinner and conversation and hope that we do so again, but also that I be permitted to return the favor. On the other matter. Now, I’m not saying that you ‘do’ sleep with your housekeeper, and I’m not saying that you ‘do not’ sleep with your housekeeper. But the fact remains that if you were sleeping in your own bed, you would have found the gravy ladle by now. My girlfriends got a ladder in her tights. She truly is the most talented shoplifter ever.
