JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to the August edition of “The Journal”! Thank you for taking the time to pick your free copy up. This month we have lots in the magazine. There is more news from the Fiesta, and some reader letters which will no doubt provoke a healthy debate about the future of the event. We also have lots of information on what the Bars and Restaurants here and in the area have got going on over the summer. It’s hard to believe that it’s August already. July went past in the blink of an eye with everybody gripped by Wimbledon and 50 Shades of Grey fever. Andy Murray made sporting history by being the first Brit to make it to the finals since 1938. He was probably also the first Brit in sporting history to cry like a baby when he lost too. Poor Andy. People thought he was crying because he lost the match. I venture to reason it may have been due the fact that Federer got well over a million quid for winning, while poor Andy just over half a million. Would you be laughing or crying that you had just won over half a million, or lost half a million to Federer? It would depend on whether your glass is half empty or half full. But then, does Andy Murray look like his glass has ever been half full? The ladies reading the above paragraph will have no idea what I’m talking about as they have spend most of the month with their heads buried deep in the most talked about book of the decade “50 Shades of Grey” . If you happen to be the one person in the world that doesn’t know what this book is about then don’t miss the column by Dawn Llewellyn- Price in this month’s edition! This month be sure to cut out the voucher to claim a free gift worth 5€ when you spend 20€ or more at the Coato Bio-shop. The products there are simply sublime and are fantastic value for money. As a Bona-fide Cynic whenever I hear the word Gourmet or Luxury I think of someone adding on a zero to the price, but here you will find honey, olive oils and a host of other products at better prices than most supermarkets and you will be supporting the local farmers too. Enjoy the magazine, the weather and your visitors from the U.K. Soon they will have gone home and it will time for us to light our log burners again. Then we can all moan how cold it is! I can’t wait! Until next month, Robert Rutherford Dear Editor, I just wanted to write a few lines in praise of the Camposol Fiesta and the organization behind it. As has been the case in previous years, a wonderful weekend for all Camposolers, and I am certain that the Fiesta Camposol Chairman will go into far more detail at a later date. As is normal, there were a few glitches, but none of these can be laid at the feet of the organising committee. You place your trust in folk to get it right and when they do it’s fine, and when they don’t, the committee get the blame. Such is life! This letter is about the folk behind the Fiesta, Dickie Davis, Tom Angel, Brenda Watson, Susie Long, Yvonne Atkinson, and Roger Wilkins, who was coerced or co-opted on to the Committee at a later date and did a great job. I have to also mention Bert Cardnel. When setting up in the port for the Spring Ball, there he was lugging furniture around like madman, and he is 82 years old! What a trouper! At the close of last years Fiesta, there were the usual doubts about if the Fiesta would go ahead this year. I well remember Dickie Davis saying that ‘it would be a shame to lose Fiesta after all the gains of the last few years’. So he took it on! I hope that he will not mind if I get a little personal here? Dickie had been waiting for at least four (4) years for a hip replacement. I know that he was in a great deal of pain. So what happens? 3 months into preparation for the Fiesta he gets a call saying that he can get a new hip! Operation over, and in some discomfort, he is sitting in his house working on the various bits of the Fiesta that turned into the fabulous weekend we have just had. Thanks Dickie, you’re a star! At the time of writing, I cannot know if there will be a Fiesta next year, I hope so as it does bring the community together and that’s good for all of us. Regards Keith Donovan

LINDA BIGGS REPORT ON MEETING WITH PACO GARCIA, FIRST DEPUTY MAYOR

& COUNCILLOR FOR TOWN PLANNING. TUESDAY 17 JULY 2012

BRIDGE TO SECTORS C & D There were so many issues to discuss regarding Camposol that it was difficult to know where to begin, so I began with the most urgent, and what many residents perceive to be a dangerous situation and that is the condition of the Bridge to Sectors C & D. I had previously sent Señor Paco Garcia photos as supplied to me by Bob Owen of the CRA showing the extent of the damage. At our meeting Señor Garcia informed me that he had already visited site on the first day the problem presented itself and is fully aware of the serious condition of the Bridge. He said that he knew that the bridge had suffered similar damage two years ago (August 2010) but unfortunately it seems the repairs carried out at that time have failed. The Town Hall will therefore be carrying out the repairs to the Bridge with the intention that it will be a strong and durable repair. It was brought to my attention by owners using the bridge on a daily

basis to and from their houses on C & D that at night the damaged part of the bridge is particularly dangerous due to no street lighting and also no reflectors on the barriers currently in use. Paco has immediately taken this information on board and barriers with reflectors will replace those without. I had already mentioned that many of the main Avenidas on BCD were currently without lighting and Paco Garcia has noted this, along with the complaints regarding Sector A street lighting and he is investigating this. SECTOR A I expressed our concern at the lack of Masa workmen on Sector A to commence the works, in particular to the garden areas – namely the replacing of the loose sand and repair of holes to the paths and circles with the pipe clay that can be wetted and compacted down with machinery – this will stop the problem of sand washing into the roads with heavy rainfall. This was previously planned for July/August but Señor Garcia has now said that to be realistic these works might not start until September after all, although it is still possible that Masa might start during July and August. These works are all as per my previous reports which include repairs to the wall separating the upper and lower levels of the Sector A Commercial Centre. We all know that the planting of trees cannot be successfully done until the autumn and it was already said that the road surfacing repairs will now be done in September. STREET LIGHTING I handed Señor Garcia a map of Sector A, showing the considerable amount of poligonos that are currently without street lighting – namely Calle Madrid from the Autovia Roundabout to Marianos, Calle Alicante and Barcelona to include all the poligons inside, amounting to some 12 poligonos. Also the problem with Poligonos RU17, 18, 19 and 20 which keep losing their light every two weeks! Again Señor

Garcia kindly said that he would try to get to the bottom of it. I also pointed out that the Electricians have not completely finished on Sector A in that they have not been round with the “Cherry picker” machine to reach the height of the lamps that need replacing all over Sector A. LEGALISATION OF THE 28 HOUSES ON RE3 Señor Garcia again apologized that completion of the legalization of these properties is yet to be finalized and was unable to give a date due to the holiday period but sincerely hoped that it would not be much longer now. CERTIFICATES OF HABITATION FOR SECTOR A ONLY I understand that some people on Sector A have been endeavoring to complete the necessary forms to obtain their certificates and in some cases have asked Tatiana for help. At my last meeting with Deputy Mayor Garcia in June, he said that the Council was working on the necessary paperwork to issue the outstanding Certificates for Sector A. Señor Garcia confirmed today that the Council is preparing the necessary forms and all the owners will need to do is sign them – these forms as soon as they are ready will be given to Tatiana so that the owners can go to her office at the Cultural Centre and sign them. I must emphasize that at this stage this relates solely to Sector A. Anyone who has looked at the appropriate form on the Council website will know that we do not possess, or are likely to possess the bulletins and other papers required to be attached to the forms and this is why the Council is doing this for us. This however is taking much longer than previously envisaged SO PLEASE WAIT UNTIL ADVISED THAT THESE FORMS ARE READY FOR SIGNATURE. SECTOR A – LOS PALACIOS GARDENING AND CLEAN-UP GROUP As requested, I translated and presented a letter requesting permission to erect a wooden shed behind the Sector A Post Room. Señor Garcia does not envisage a problem with this but advised that this letter should be delivered to the Town Hall for process in the normal way and this can be done via Tatiana in the office at the Cultural Centre on Sector B. TOO HOT TO SLEEP?

Cool Down, Relax and Sleep Well with a Chillow Pillow 4 out of 5 Brits “flip the pillow” in search of the cool spot According to new research recently issued, four out of five Brits suffer disrupted sleep as they repeatedly turn their warm pillow over in search of a cool spot, and that’s just in Britain! With summer night temperatures here in Spain of 30 degrees plus, a good night’s sleep is even more difficult. The research found that 80% of Brits flip their pillows in bed at night with 37% saying they flip their pillows frequently. The research also revealed that pillow flipping is not a gender issue. 81% of men and 78% of women admitted to pillow flipping. Sleep Expert, Dr Neil Stanley, said: “Sleep is a biological necessity and good sleep is essential to good physical, mental and emotional health. During the night the body needs to lose heat in order to sleep and this is done mainly through the head and face. However if the bedroom, bed or pillow is too hot then the body may not be able to sufficiently cool itself and sleep can be disrupted.” However, relief is now available in the form of the Chillow Pillow - a personal cooling pad now available at Yorkshire Linen. The

NEWS

Chillow is a thin, cushioned pad (made from medical-grade, hypoallergenic, nontoxic materials) that lies on top of a normal pillow (or inside the pillowcase) to take heat away from the body and keep the user cool throughout the night. Like many great inventions, the Chillow is remarkably simple. It works on the principle that water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air - which is why people feel cold when they come out of a swimming pool. As well as helping to induce sleep, the Chillow also provides soothing relief from fever, aches and pains, hot flushes, injury and irritating skin conditions such as sunburn and acne. It is particularly beneficial within oncology where cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy suffer from severe overheating. The Chillow provides them with instant, nonevasive relief. The Chillow works without power, chemicals or refrigeration. It remains permanently at room temperature (usually 10 to 20°C below body temperature) and unlike gel-pads, which have to be pre-frozen, it is always ready for use and is soft not hard, dry not wet, cool not cold. The Chillow is flexible and soft to touch and has memory foam properties. Who can benefit from a chillow? HOT PEOPLE - Some people have a high metabolism and are just simply hot all the

time. Even in winter, we can overheat with hi-tog duvet covers and efficient central heating. People are also becoming more energy conscious. A powerless, dry, cool, and comforting product therefore has appeal wherever you are in the world. FLU & FEVERS - Chillow is ideal for bringing body temperature down quickly and is especially helpful for children and adults suffering from a high temperature. HEADACHES - 45 million people in the U.S and UK have frequent headaches. With its large, cool, dry surface area, combined with its ease of application, the Chillow is the answer to many headache and migraine sufferers. HOT FLUSHES - 80% of all women will suffer from hot flushes upon reaching the menopausal stage of their lives. Chillow can provide soothing relief. BACK PAIN & SUNBURNS - The Chillow is wonderful for treating a variety of everyday ailments. The common ice or gel pack is freezing cold, hard, wet and lumpy. Enter the Chillow, a soft flexible dry memory foam comfort solution. Cool at room temperature, Chillow may be refrigerated for extra cooling power and longer lasting comfort. You’re always cool with a Chillow, now available at Yorkshire Linen above the Mercadona in Puerto de Mazarron.

Camposol Residents Association

At the time of writing this article probably one of the most prominent issues is that for the second time in a little over two years the access road to the bridge has suffered a collapse. After receiving an urgent call, CRA Vice Chairman Less Crook attended the scene where he found councillor G贸mez (Pepe), the local police and employees of both water and electric companies assessing the situation. Les was informed by Pepe that the cause of the problem was due to water from a overnight burst in the main water pipe supplying B Sector. It was apparent that as an outcome, a large section of the stone sub-base and soil sub-grade had been washed away and as could be expected this also had the effect of a break up of the road surfacing and the forming of a large void. Pepe assured Les that the main bridge structure had not suffered any damage and that the council rather then Masa will undertake the necessary repairs. He further stated that although this work has to first go out to tender it his hoped that by taking this course it will expedite the operation. We hope it will also result in a situation whereby suitable design and control from experienced personnel are used, this ensuring that a repeat of the previous

NEWS

sub-standard construction does not allow a similar occurrence to happen again. In the meantime with the aid of safety barriers the traffic flow has not been too badly affected but never the less in the perhaps unlikely event we should experience a period of heavy rain before the repairs take place that might well change. Some unwelcome news recently came from Daniel Segarra, a senior representative of Grupo Masa who informed us that we are required to immediately vacate the land opposite the B sector commercial centre which is presently home for the CRA cabin. Apparently this has come about as the consequence of a court ruling determining that the developer must relinquish the land to a fuel company in settlement of outstanding debts. The area in question was used by the CRA with the permission of Masa who also donated the cabin to our organization. Thankfully however Pepe our Councillor for Camposol has kindly given consent for the cabin to be re-located on the council owned land adjacent to the Los Palacios Cultural Centre on Sector B. On the positive side, this will afford residents the convenience making enquiries at both facilities at the same time if required. It is hoped that from the 3rd of September onwards we will be operating at our new location. In addition to forfeiting the land on Sector B of we have also learnt of a similar occurrence on the undeveloped sectors D5

and D6. The future of this tract, which can hardly be considered as prime real estate, is more uncertain as it is within the confines on what is believed to be a flood plain situated over the same infamous rambla which has caused so much distress to owners unlucky to have purchased property at that location. The councils stated intention is that once Masa brings Camposol to a state of satisfactory completion the developer will then be permitted to take advantage of the hoped for Polaris World driven property boom by way of undertaking further construction on their remaining undeveloped parcels of land. This raises the question that should the courts keep ruling that they have to cede land to their creditors, they could be left with little or nothing left to build on and the incentive for them to finish the urbanization will then vanish along with our wayward developer? After the two recent serious water interruptions which affected much of Camposol, CRA Chairman Bob Owen approached Councillor G贸mez (Pepe) with a view to discussing ways that might be adopted to avoid any reoccurrence. Regrettably our councillor somewhat inexplicably felt he was unable to help and so now we must look for another contact within the council ranks for assistance. to La Tomatina, so many people take the easier option of staying in nearby Valencia just 38km to Buñol by bus or train. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in order to protect them from the carnage.

What Happens at La Tomatina ....

La Tomatina 2012 Is ......

At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the

Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. Anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 people come to this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Buñol’s normal 9,000 person population. There is limited accommodation for people who come

bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the

battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Buñol River to wash themselves, although

2012

some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.

The Rules of La Tomatina

Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants Do not rip other people’s T-shirts You must squash the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact Ensure you keep a safe distance from the lorries As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes

Useful Advice

Wear closed shoes that you don’t mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops, you may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle Wear old clothes, or clothes that you aren’t planning to wear again. They will most likely end up damaged from being ripped or incredibly dirty You may find goggles useful. However,

your T-Shirt into your shorts to keep the bottom part of your T-shirt clean and dry If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera! If you’re not from Buùol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance Do not miss the Palojabón – a soapcovered pole with a Spanish ham at the top: whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it! Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much possible

A very British Fiesta.

Not being funny, but I can’t help thinking any Spanish person who stumbled on to Camposol on 16th and 17th June could be forgiven for wondering exactly what was going on. As I see it, a Fiesta needs a focus? What is ours? A Saint, a commemoration of some historical event perhaps? Not Camposols’ Fiesta. There is no focus unless there is a Saint Citroen. The whole thing is samey year in year out. We need an injection of ideas and people willing to carry them out. Without some big changes, the Camposol Fiesta will grind to a halt sooner rather than later! And who can blame the organisers? As usual it’s a small group of people who Goggles are a good idea work their socks off. ESPUĂ‘A SUNSETS

It happens every night, never is the same two days running and is one of the wonders of living in Spain and yet how many of us take it for granted and never use the opportunity to be amazed at its beauty every night? Of course I´m referring to the Spanish

sunsets which for a few hours on the vast majority of the evenings in the year provide a 360 degree panorama of the night sky. Enchanting, awe-inspiring, beautiful and romantic are just some of the words used to describe this daily event. If you live in Camposol the show is also enhanced in that the sun disappears over the Sierra EspuĂąa adding an extra dramatic effect with the back drop of the mountain range. If you do not live in Camposol or just to lazy to get out of that comfortable armchair you can now tune in to the EspuĂąa Sunset webcam which can be found by logging in to www. ParamountResortVillaRentals.com where you can find the page link on the Home Page. Sit back for a nightly spectacular never to be repeated. Something never to be taken for granted!!

As well as entering independently, the young dancer, Megan Bailey has won the Most Promising Dance U13 Award. 10 year old Megan entered a Sevilliana’s Dance routine in the Novice’s 8-12 year old Category. Adjudicators of the event, Eileen Gale (former teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance) and Tricia Hawcroft (from the Professional Teachers of Dancing) felt that the young Megan demonstrated a strong technique in a challenging dance style, and, was able to capture the style creating mood

school, Totally Dance, from Ciudad Quesada, Rojales, Alicante. Adjudicators felt that the Totally Dance’s Megan was technically strong with a lovely lyrical style. Louise states “This year has been the best festival yet. With 150 dancers from 7 different dance schools from Benidorm to Almeria attending, it is a bonus that dancers can now feel confident to enter the festival independently. All dancers and schools have raised the profile and quality of dance throughout the Spanish coast as a result. The festival this year was a 3 day event sponsored by La Caixa Bank, DKCASACARE, Fiestas Camposol, Ken Sherwood Garage, Vistas De Murcia, Teatro Canavero and Murcia Dance. The festival is a project member of the Arts & Cultural Association of Murcia (ACAM). Its aims are to make accessible a quality arts provision for the community of Murcia and it’s visitors. Bridge repairs, again.

The water went off again on Camposol, this time apparently linked to a leak by the bridge linking B & C. A hole has been forced out right by the bridge. According to Pepe, the bridge is safe, but care needs to be taken negotiating the hole. The

hole is right where the last one was. Les Crook, vice chair of the CRA, did talk to Clr. Pepe Gomez at the scene and was told it was the town hall sorting the hole out. Presumably this will be added to MASA’s bill. The water infrastructure

does seem to need considerable attention. Water stoppages attendant on leaks, seem to have become a major feature of life on B,C & D Camposol. Pepe added that the cost was such that the job would have to go out to tender. In November Age Concern needs to re-negotiate its lease on its premises on C. It is looking for alternatives. Do you, or do you know someone who has space to spare? Safe, secure and dry premises are needed to store equipment and all the donated items for sale. Do you know of a decent sized underbuild or outhouse? It doesn’t have to be on Camposol! Please get in touch if you know anywhere. Tel:968 970 687

LORCA APPEAL UPDATE

Still taking a considerable role in helping to look after the needs of national and local people, the Lions Club of Mazarrón Bahía have just transferred €11,000 to the Federación del Clubes de Leones de España (FLCE) to help finance the building of a new centre for mentally and physically handicapped children In Lorca. If there any products that you would like to sample before purchase then feel free to ask and the staff will try to make it possible. Among our personal favorites has to be the Marmalades. Rose Petal, Orange Blossom and Cava were the 3 we tried and they were simply divine. Mantenilla was another favorite which is a honey and aniseed liqueur local to Totana. We also tried a gift set of 3 limited edition Olive Oils which were so nice they could literally be tasted straight from the bottle. The ladies will love the cosmetic section where they sell all sorts of Organic lotions a potions based on Almonds and olive oils. You will find hand creams, soaps, bath and shower gels, lip balms, oils, and various other cosmetics. The beauty of the Bioshop is that they

Another fantastic weekend! Like most of their local contemporary organisations, the Mazarrón Lions Club took part in last weekend’s Camposol Fiesta. In addition to running their usual tombola ‘bottle’ game for the adults, they also made sure that the kids didn’t miss out, by including a number of junior fun games such as ‘lucky dip’ and ‘pick-a-stick’ Their crowning glory was the draw of a 100 ticket ‘limited’ raffle for which the prize was a superb 42” LG HD Razor Frame television, normally retailing at around €550 (considerably more with a

Reflections of the chairman

As I stood on sector B commercial car park at 11.45 on Monday morning, the last bar packed up the car park swept clean and the last cigarette butt duly disposed of I was able to reflect on the last rather hectic ten months. We began fiestas2012 in august 2011 with a much smaller committee than usual and a mammoth fundraising task ahead of us. The committee worked long and hard to produce new and interesting forms of fund raising, who will forget the chocolate and fish and chips trip or the fantastic murder mystery night. We searched out and found new sponsors and new bars. We found new acts for the fiesta and arranged a programme designed to interest and entertain most people. We took a big risk and ordered a much more expensive car for the car draw, again in the hope of interesting more people. It was a long

intense and stressful period but at last it was over and most if not everybody seemed to have had fun. It was estimated that in excess of 5000 people attended the fiesta over the week end and I must say that the atmosphere through out the fiesta was friendly and very good natured. Who could have imagined the response on Saturday night to the fantastic Exedos who played so many favourites from our younger days, lots of laughter and dodgy dancing were proof enough of their popularity. We concentrated on more local acts this year and the Great sounds of the C.A.S. Band were ample proof that you don’t have to look too far to get top class entertainers. There was the Murcia dance group, and the Harlequins choir both from camposol. Anthony Jarra and Rondalla De Mazarron supplied our Spanish input and both were entertaining and spectacular particularly Anthony Jarras dancers. We had a remarkable act in SUSIE G who despite a very energetic performance volunteered to fill in a short gap in our programme, she

made me feel exhausted just watching her. A young lady called TORRI took to the stage with only her guitar for company and sang so sweetly she must surely have a great future ahead of her. And there was Byron who put in long hours to knit it all together and ensure the smooth running of the stage performances, Thanks Byron. On Sunday morning we had the Fun Run & Doggies walk organised by Don, we had a lot of entries and the run was won by Garin Tucker closely followed by his dad Tony with Tyler Stapleton third. In total both groups raised over €1700 for their local charities, a fantastic achievement!!!!!! We had the usual fun and frolics including a glamourus grandma competition a dog show organised by Andrea and many other events creating the fun atmosphere of fiesta and the largest ever craft market thanks to Susie Unfortunately we had a few badly behaved camposolers who let the side down. I had to deal with a screaming

harridan on the Sunday night who would not have been out of place in scene one of Macbeth, and an objectionable drunk (at least I hope he was drunk) who felt he and his party had a right to sit at the tables of one of the bars and consume his own drinks. Where do these people come from? A small incident at one of the bars was quickly dealt with (thank you Simon) these were the only incidents of any concern and in the cold light of day I trust that the perpetrators are hanging their heads in shame as they let the rest of Camposol down in front of our many Spanish visitors. So finally to bed at 3.0am on Monday morning and back again at 6.30 to tidy up, it does tend to concentrate the mind and ask , was it all worth it. My answer is, yes of course it was the sight of so many people enjoying themselves is more than ample reward and with the bonus of the web cam coverage our friends and relatives were able to join in the fun as well. Sadly I must now say farewell to the fiesta. as I have another project to take up my time .It has been great fun working with a fantastic group of people who really care about the community they live in I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has supported the fiesta over the years and in particular all the unsung heroes without whom there would just not have been a fiesta , and I would like to conclude with a roll of honour of

Ooof it’s hot. A word resurrected from an Australian diving expedition years ago where it became the ‘word de jour’. Ooof. Everyone was saying it, just like they were drinking Lindeman’s 65 or was it 69? Can’t remember, I’ve slept since then and my brain cells, submerged at depth in all that salt water for so long, have lost their ability to store stuff. I’ve been narcosis-sized. So summer arrived with a vengeance the back end of June, (along with yet more visitors) and ‘scorchio’ days mean we’re supposed to take it easy, have a lengthy siesta, idle about and enjoy the pleasures of a restful time, like going to the beach, guiltlessly watching your favourite TV programme or reading a good book. This year I’ve chosen the Ewing family to revisit, (last year ‘Dynasty’ joined me for a morning cuppa) and dive in front of CBS Drama at 9am or Midnight to keep up with the goings on in the shoulder-padded metropolis of Dallas. Books? I’ve read a few so far; the last Dan Brown, some Chic Lit a friend left behind, and an Adriana Trigiani novel where (mysteriously) Welshmen come from England and are called ‘Johnny Bulls’. Then of course, it became difficult to ignore the gossip, the internet talk, and the time arrived to beg, borrow or steal a copy of that (un)forbidden tome ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ Snigger. Well I, nay we, need to know what the fuss is all about. Via a gentleman (yes, men are reading it too) and a webpage, I had an email copy within seconds, ready to download onto my Kindle if I could discover how. My friends were reading it, my cousins were reading it, people I’d never met were warning me to read it via the Facebook wall. Oh well, may as well make the summer ‘ooh aah just a little bit’…hotter. I’m up to chapter twenty one so far. The fact I didn’t download it means I sit on the sofa reading it from a laptop with a wobbly lid, which lists back and forth and threatens to commit computercide at any given moment. Not before I finish. Please. Now gather around, in case anyone hears.

page 18

This book is not for the fainthearted, nor those with hormonal imbalances. If you have a predilection for riding crops, handcuffs, perfect, filthy-rich young men bearing impressive lengths, and don’t mind discovering stuff you never knew went on around the neighbours, then beg, steal or borrow it. I’m more than halfway through, but I’m having a few days break. (Bear in mind it’s a trilogy.) The other two are already waiting in my inbox via a lady on the Costa Blanca, plus Derek the Weather sheep’s barnyard romp ‘Fifty Grades of Hay’. So in the meantime, it’s back to a world where all sorts of underhand, vile, vicious, nasty deeds and comments reach us via the initials ‘J.R.’ Exactly what sort of summer am I going to have? Ask me in September.

Stars over Camposol

with Keith Jackson August sees the return of the constellation of Pegasus - the Flying Horse. Pegasus occupies a large, quiet area of the night sky and the main four regularly spaced stars form the easily recognized asterism known as The Great Square of Pegasus. The Square is a useful signpost in helping to find nearby stars and constellations. By midnight, Pegasus should be fully visible above the Eastern horizon. (Directly below Vega and Cygnus which we looked at in June) In mythology, Pegasus sprang from the spilled blood of the Medusa, which dripped into the ocean after she was slain by Perseus. Pegasus then flew off into the sky and in honour of his great service to the gods, Zeus placed his constellation among the stars. The pattern of a horse is not immediately discernable as this is another upside down constellation. However, turning the picture counter-clockwise and it may start to resemble the head and front legs of a galloping horse with the square forming the body. The star at the bottom left of the square is Alpheratz which is actually the leading star of the constellation of Andromeda – The Chained Lady. Andromeda’s full shape can be difficult to see and I find it is best identified as a line of four stars extending from Alpheratz through Mirach. Andromeda is also home to the famous Great Andromeda Galaxy also known as M31. This spiral galaxy is the nearest large galaxy to our own Milky Way system and is found just above Mirach. However, it needs a very dark and clear sky to see it with the naked eye and looks nothing more than a fuzzy blob through binoculars

www.thecamposoljournal.com

Using the Great Square as a guide extend a line out from Algenid through Alpheratz and it leads you to Caph, the second brightest star in the constellation of Cassiopeia – The Queen of the Night Sky. Cassiopeia is one of the circumpolar constellations meaning that, as it is fairly close to the pole star, it rotates around the sky without dipping below the horizon and can be seen all year round. The five stars of Cassiopeia form a distinctive “W” or “M” shape (depending where it is in its orbit) which make it one of the more easily recognized constellations. Shedi is the leading and brightest star of Cassiopeia and a line drawn from Shedi extending out beyond Caph leads to Alderamin, the leading star in the constellation of Cepheus – The King. These five stars form a shape resembling the gable end of a house. In mythology, Cepheus, the legendary king of Etheopia, was placed in the sky just ahead of his wife Cassiopeia and their daughter Andromeda as they rotate around Polaris, the North Star. Since he did nothing to stop Cassiopeia’s constant boasting of hers and Andromeda’s beauty, his constellation was given faint stars which are somewhat difficult to see and placed where he would have to listen to their constant boasting for all eternity. These four constellations will travel across the sky together until Pegasus and Andromeda dip below the western horizon during December. Finally, around August 12 – 13 is the peak of The Perseids meteor shower. Starting at mid to late evening on the nights of August 11/12 and 12/13, watch for the Perseid meteors to streak across the sky from late night until dawn. These meteors radiate from the constellation of Perseus, which is rising in the east, but can appear anywhere in the sky. The Persieds, often very bright and frequently leaving trails, tend to increase in number around midnight and reach a peak (often 50 or more per hour in a dark sky) in the hours just before dawn.

Scotties Bar and Restaurant

Scottie and her husband Andy have been working hard over the last few months to cement their place as the British bar, which is genuinely integrated into the Spanish village way of life.

On Wednesday the 15th and Saturday the 18th of August they will be hosting an evening that coincides with the Los Cantarreros Fiestas. Bizarrely many people living here don’t know that this Fiesta even takes place, even those that have been living here for many years so this presents a great opportunity to try something new! Lola, will be providing some of the early entertainment as she cooks her famous giant Paella! For the enjoyment of the guests, there will DJ Mark the Spark be a BBQ a Disco with Spanish and English music. This promises to be a real night out with a difference, to try something new and really enjoy the Spanish culture.

Bookings are essential and spaces going fast for both the Wednesday and the Saturday evenings. To book call 634 103 696 or 634 103 696. Another area that they have been working on is demonstrating their fantastic courtyard as an ideal venue for group events and birthday parties etc. They have been making improvements including a huge pergola creating a shaded area, ideal for large parties. July saw them play host to several events one being for a local charitable organization. This saw the guests brought to the venue by coach, presented with welcome cocktails, waiter service at their tables during the evening, a BBQ

serving. Make this in pretty glasses (Moroccan tea glasses are lovely) so you don’t have to unmould them.

Galleta de Naranja (Orange biscuits) Ingredients: 125 gr. Almond flakes 250 gr. Sugar 100 gr. Flour 200 gr. butter melted 2 teaspoon grated orange rind 100 ml. Orange Juice

Serves 8 For the Jelly 4 oranges, preferably blood oranges 950ml blood-orange juice Juice of half a lemon seeds from 5 crushed cardamom pods 75g caster sugar 8 leaves gelatine sweetened whipped cream

Preparation: Mix sugar and flour with the butter, zest and orange juice. Finally, add the almond flakes and mix this with care not to break the almonds. Grease a baking tray with butter and spread with a spoon the dough into circles of different sizes. Bake in hot oven at 200 ° C, until well browned.

For the Candied Peel (Optional) Peel from 2 oranges, prefereably blood oranges 225ml blood orange juice 100g caster sugar Cut a thin slice off both ends of each orange so that they are flat at the top and bottom and can sit on your chopping board. Set each orange on its base and, with a very sharp knife, remove the peel and pith in strips, working from top to bottom all the way around. Reserve the peel. To remove the segments cut in between the membrane and the flesh of each segment, and carefully slide the segment out. You do need a fine, sharp knife for this.

Before separating them from the baking sheet, let cool a bit so it does not break

Gelatina de sangre naranja y cardamomo (Blood Orange and Cardamom Jellies) Blood oranges are available only for a short time and are not always easy to get hold of even in season, but you can use juice from a carton and it’s still good. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of making your own candied peel just put a neat segment of orange on top of each

Our Famous BBQ Terrace restaurant is now RE-OPEN for summer!

To make the jelly put the orange juice, lemon juice, cardamom and sugar in a saucepan and heat very gently, stirring from time to time, to help the sugar dissolve. Put the leaves of gelatne in a flat dish and cover with water.Â

Leave them to soak for three to five minutes until they are completely soft. Remove the softened gelatine, squeezing out any excess liquid, and add it to the warm orange juice, stirring to help it dissolve. Divide the orange segments between eight glasses (you should have about five per glass) and then pour the jelly liquid into each glass. Leave to cool, then refrigerate. To make the candied peel, remove the pith from the rind of two oranges and cut the rind into fine julienne strips. Put it in a saucepan with orange juice and sugar. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and then let the mixture simmer until the liquid has almost evaporated (about 30 minutes). Scoop the pieces of rind out with a fork, gently separating them, and lay them on a piece of greaseproof paper. Put somewhere warm to dry. Top the jellies with some whipped cream and candied peel or an orange segment.

Out & About

With Rod Sawyer

Mariposa Hotel is well known throughout the region and are well know for their restaurant and short breaks. We decided to spend a Sunday there, with one half the family taking the high road, and the other the low road. We went with friends, and the adventurous foursome spent an hour and half in the saddle,

quad biking across the mountainside. The more sloth like half spent that time in the Mariposa pool, sunbathing and relaxing. The four were totally exhilarated, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They had screamed up and down slopes and finished up with a swim in the blue lake, blue with minerals. They reckoned it one of the best times they have had in Spain! Me? Well lets just say I prefer to spend less adrenaline on my Sundays so the quiet poolside it was! Mariposa pool is set below the hotel with stunning views across the valley, a real sun trap and delightful pool. There was a Dutch couple there who spend weeks at a time on the location. It was so peaceful and relaxing and it meant that the whole family got to do something that they enjoyed. The hotel itself is set in a shaded courtyard where you can eat out or in the restaurant. It was an all in deal for the quad bikers, with nine Euros for myself for the meal, a three course Menu Del Dia. The courtyard is cool, very welcoming, the food excellent value. We were waited on by Tom, son of owner Mark, who makes a great maitre D. Sean took the intrepid foursome round the course. We really loved it up there, the ambiance of the hotel, the welcome from Tom, nice food, a laze in and by a pool. Mind they do have gymnastic apparatus by the pool, so could have been more athletic! What more could you want on a family Sunday?

It easy enough to find. Just go to Alhama, right into totem turn left and then follow your nose. It’s a stunning country drive, with great views. There are many different combinations of activities and events up there. A night there with food and music, walking tours plus food, quad biking or just lazing in the pool. We will return and I hope next time I might be brave enough for the quads! On Sunday the 4th of July we visited the Vista Bar and restaurant on Camposol A which had a full house by 2PM. We had two courses for 9.50 including a glass of wine. There was an interesting array of starters, home made soup, salmon mousse with melba toast, mixed meats with crusty bread and onion chutney, and brushettas with tomato, onion, and bacon or blue cheese. We chose the salmon mousse which arrived with melba toast. It was light and delicious. Mains are a choice of topside of beef, loin of pork, or chicken breast, with homemade Yorkshires and stuffing, roast potatoes, excellent, fresh vegetables and gravy, served separately. The food came on warm plates, and we tried both the beef and the chicken. Both really well cooked. Desserts included fruit crumble with ice cream or custard, chocolate pots, fresh fruit salad, a strawberry Pavlova, vanilla ice cream. We had a Pavlova between us, very tasty and nicely presented, too often a pavlova is a pile of fruit just dumped on top of the meringue, almost imitation Eton mess! We left full to the brim, a great quality

lunch and great value too. I had a disastrous evening at the hospital. Following my hip replacement I turned up for an appointment at 9Pm for an x-ray, only to be told by jobsworth that I did not have relevant bit of paper from the Doctor. I couldn’t get it through to them that I wouldn’t be there for an x-ray unless sent by my doctor! On the way back we decided to eat at the Caverna in Alhama, on the old Murcia road. Done out a la Flintstones cave, it is a brasserie. It’s a treat to be waited on there, and we always go very traditional, tostada with tomatoes and garlic to start, plus a nice mixed salad. We had pork escalope and lamb slice of leg! Very tasty since barbecued. Also had some awesome char grilled veggies as a starter. The restaurant is Catalan run and welcomes Brits, in fact offers trasport to and from Camposol! Well new menus at the Vista and at Cats! This includes Sunday lunch starting first Sunday in July, should be well worth a visit! Cats and Tels ran a help the Heroes evening with Byron on Saturday 30th June. This was very well attended, over 200 tickets sold, with a small BBQ. A huge raffle, karaoke, dancing, stand

up and American bingo made for an entertaining evening. The evening itself made over 1300 Euros, so many congrats to Carole and co who organised the evening. Given that Alley Palais raised over 2000€ the week before, Camposol is doing its best. We also paid a visit to Alley Palais bistro, Rathnait having the fillet steak, myself the 5oz sirloin. Both were delicious and perfectly cooked. Antoine was doing the cooking and we thoroughly enjoyed it.. A nicely thought out summer menu, with a decently priced menu del noche. These days Camposol really does have some nice variety for eating out, Indian, Italian, Chinese, Steaks, and plenty of

Camposol Residents Association

The cabin will be closed from Friday 22nd June to Monday 3rd September for the summer break. The land that the cabin occupied was used with the permission of Masa who donated the cabin to the CRA. In a recent court case Masa forfeited the land to a company that it owed debts to. That company has demanded that we move the cabin off their land. The Councillor for Camposol, Pepe Gomez has kindly given permission for the CRA to re site the cabin on council owned land at the side of the Los Palacios Cultural Centre on Sector B. This now means that residents with enquiries can go to one location to seek help, either from the council office in the Cultural Centre or from the CRA cabin outside. A one stop shop in effect. We look forward to seeing you from the 3rd of September onwards at our new location. During the summer break you can contact us by phone on CRA Duty Committee Member 634 364 739 Bob Owen, Chairman 634 364 738

Los Palacios garden report

July and August is the time when Los Palacios Gardening Volunteers are forced to ease off. The Spanish summer makes it impossible to carry out any heavy work. Only the necessary tasks of watering the plants, some garden maintenance and of course keeping our streets clean continue, allowing the hard working volunteer’s time to play with visiting grandchildren. This year summer came early. Some of the projects we hoped to finish in June remain incomplete. Intense heat, lack of rain and hard baked soil made new planting almost impossible, but most are eager to continue the work as soon as possible. Incredibly there is still a new feature to admire in Parque Los Palacios, which appeared almost overnight, although unfortunately with a sad connection. The new feature was created as a memorial to

Willy Kramer. Willy, from Germany, was one of the first residents of Camposol, from the time when the split was aprox 50/50 with the Brits. He was one Bespoke Garden Design and Maintenance of the first gardeners working on a small patch of land near his home. Unfortunately in recent years his For all aspects of Garden maintenance and design health suffered and call 679582410 for a free no obligation quote. he was unable to continue. Willy died on 24/6/2012. His widow, Mara, and daughter in law, Thay, helped by family and friends, were determined to see the project that Willy had started, become an area that could be loved by all. Stones that Willy had been collecting became

Evergreen

a stone circle, housing a raised bed of plants. More plants that he had been nurturing were transferred to the parque, and a new bench provided, sited in the shade, where visitors might sit and enjoy this miracle. All of this was completed before the memorial service of 30/6/2012. The memorial service for Willy was the first of its kind, a very moving ceremony held in the open air, in front of the memorial garden, thanks to St. Nicolas Church, Camposol. The service was conducted in 3 languages, English, German and Spanish, and included all 3 tongues combining simultaneously in singing a hymn that all of the 60 people attending knew. After the service, Mara provided drinks and snacks for all those attending. Our parque is loved, cared for and enjoyed by people of all nationalities, all working together to make Los Palacios a better place to live. More improvements are planned to start as soon as weather permits.

B Clean Gardening Group B Clean Gardening Group are taking a well earned rest due to the heat of July August and September. The group will recommence as a group in the first week of October. Any individuals who wish to carry on watering the plants, spraying the weeds and tidying up their work will be greatly appreciated. The last eight months have seen modest improvements in the B Sector area, from planting of 900 Oleanders, trimming the palms on the dual carriageway and roundabouts, planting out over 100+ plants on the three roundabouts of the dual carriageway. These plants were kindly donated to us. A great deal of effort has gone into controlling the weeds on the sector, removing rubbish and culminating in June with the installation of our wall and sign near the entrance to B Sector. Helen, Sandy and I would like to thank all those people who contributed money to our group and a special thanks to all those many people who turn out week after week to improve the area we live in. We would like to thank all those people who have supported our money raising social events. A new social events calendar will be available at the end of September and we look forward to your continued support. There are many people on sector B who are not in the gardening group who keep public areas around their homes tidy. We extend our thanks to these people, keep up the good work.

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group Our maintenance team have been turning out earlier because of the tremendous heat throughout the past month, trimming palms and clearing the area on the Hotel and Golf course side of the Dual carriageway in preparation for gravelling in the Autumn – Thanks to all who have given donations to our bucket; so many people coming to Camposol on holiday have noticed the marked difference since their previous visit – every Euro has helped us with landscaping and planting. Thanks also to those who have kindly provided much needed drinks to the early-bird workers, despite the fact that we may have woken some of them; our apologies (it’s hard to clean streets silently!). The weeding and spraying rota of ‘C’ streets has continued and two new water butts have been installed; Please, if you have any spare time, give the plants near your home or holiday home some water – every area is suffering in these high temperatures. May we also politely request that dog owners pick up any mess their pets leave behind? It only takes two minutes to deposit the bag in a bin, and will keep the area much cleaner and poo-free, thanks. Green Fingers Committee are pleased

to announce two donations of 50 Euros each, some of the proceeds of our Jubilee Party; to M.A.D., our local charity for the

One of our donations

needy, and F.A.S.T., our Camposol first aid support team. Although most of us are enjoying a really happy life or holiday here, we may all need or benefit from these charities one day… Don’t forget; our next Social Evening is at the Golf Club 8pm, 10th August with the wonderful Beagles: Tickets are only 5 Euros donation with drinks at special prices – please support us as it promises to be another great night! Also a reminder about our ‘Auction of Promises’ on 19th October at the Golf Club with DJ Dan - There will be a donation of

only 1 Euro per person admission, and then you will be able to bid for the ‘promise’ of someone else’s time or skills: We have had quite a few offers of different skills to be auctioned, but there must be more of you out there who have a special talent which you would like to freely ‘donate’ to this Auction and which someone else may find useful? For example; pet walking or sitting, a few hours gardening, cooking, sewing, computer tuition, ironing, baby-sitting or perhaps DIY for someone…So come on and help raise awareness for your business while helping out a very good cause and making ‘C’ a prettier place – your donation could raise enough to plant a whole new area! Please give generously of your time, and help support others who may need your expertise: recommendations will surely follow, so you will benefit, too, too! We look forward to hearing from you with regard to this special Auction and further details of both these events can be found on our Chalkboards or contact us on 634 325 427. wireless communication, the vehicles in the platoon “mimic” the lead vehicle using autonomous control - accelerating, braking and turning in exactly the same way as the leader.

The so-called road train has been developed by Volvo. The firm is confident that they will be widely available in future.

The vehicles drove at 85kph (52mph) with the gap between each vehicle just 6m (19ft).

The project aims to herald a new age of relaxed driving. According to Volvo, drivers “can now work on their laptops, read a book or sit back and enjoy a relaxed lunch” while driving. The road train test was carried out as part of a European Commission research project known as Sartre - Safe Road Trains for the Environment. The convoy comprised three cars and one lorry. It was truly thrilling,” says Linda Wahlstroem, project manager for the Sartre project at Volvo Car Corporation “We covered 200km in one day and the test turned out well. We’re really delighted,” she added. The cars are fitted with special

The eventual aim of the project is to have lots of cars “slaved” to a lead vehicle and travelling at high speed along specific routes on motorways.

“People think that autonomous driving is science fiction, but the fact is that the technology is already here. From the purely conceptual viewpoint, it works fine and road train will be around in one form or another in the future,” says Ms Wahlstroem. “We’ve focused really hard on changing as little as possible in existing systems. Everything should function without any infrastructure changes to the roads or expensive additional components in the cars. “Apart from the software developed as part of the project, it is really only the wireless network installed between the cars that set them apart from other cars available in showrooms today.” The three-year Sartre project has been under way since 2009. A new player has entered the sports car market, the Tauro V8 Spider manufactured in Valladolid, Spain. The

Spider was officially unveiled recently, it’s a two-seater roadster manufactured entirely in Spain. Just 30 will be built for the initial production run, each one tailored to the individual customer. Journalists relayed details of the car after attending the official presentation hosted by Spanish model Nieves Alvarez. Two examples of the roadster have been

built so far, a black and red example. We’re told that it takes the Pontiac Solstice underpinnings and adds a 6.2

liter V8 LS3 E-Rod engine sourced through GM. The huge powerplant produces 440hp at 6,200rpm and 586Nm at 4,400rpm. Optional upgrades to the engine camshafts and cylinder heads

boost those figures to 480hp and 644Nm of torque. Further options are tipped to release 530hp and 663Nm of torque and even as much as 650hp. The standard gearbox is a manual sixspeed close-ratio, however, the red Tauro V8 Spider is fitted with an optional General Motors-sourced automatic paddle-shift gearbox. The Tauro also gets a limited slip differential, independent suspension on both axles with double wishbones, monotube shocks and springs. The brakes are 360mm ventilated discs with six-piston calipers at the front, at the rear, disks are 335mm ventilated with

four-piston calipers. As far as design goes, the Pontiac Solstice connection is obvious. The engine is frontmounted with the driver sitting far back, almost over the rear wheels. The bodywork is bespoke and blends elements of the most popular roadsters into a small soft top package. We’re told that the weight distribution is 52%48% in favour of the front with an overall weight of just 1,200kg. The price is expected to be around 100,000 euros. It has been pointed out that we’ve already seen an American V8 packed into the tiny Solstice platform by way of the Breckland Beira V8 Roadster. That particular project folded in July 2009 without a single customer car delivered.

Sports How far can you hit your 3-wood?

By John Brown

Nowadays I can hit my 3-wood 240 yards, on a good day. In 1962, I didn’t have a clue how far I hit any club. I say this because the 141st Open Golf Championship is about to be held at Royal Lytham and Saint Annes Golf Club. This was where Tony Jacklin won in 1969. I have had the good fortune to play at 3 Open venues - St Andrews, Troon and Lytham. This is because they allow Joe Public to pay and play as visitors.I dont recall too much of these rounds because I was just a scrawny teenager at the time. I had a drive and sand wedge to the first hole at St Andrews followed by a two putt par. At the 17th, the famous Road Hole, an 8 iron 3rd shot held the green and I holed the putt for a par. Everything else in between was very forgetable. The par 3 ninth hole at Lytham measures 165 yards for the professionals. In 1962 when I last played there, it was probably 140 yards from the yellow tees? This was in the days before GPS satellite devices and electronic trolleys. I doubt that I knew how far I could hit the ball with any club. I also doubt that I could hit two balls the same distance twice in a row with the same club so it was all guesswork. A 3-wood was as likely to travel 150 yards as 200 yards. A good swing would follow a bad swing for no apparent reason. If you asked me then how far I could hit my 3-wood, I expect I would have said “As far as I can!” To select a club all I would do was look at the pin, look at the bunkers, sniff the air a make a choice. In this case I chose a 3-wood. This was my favourite club. It had a red persimmon head and was made boy Pirie of Scotland. So, I teed up my Dunlop 65 and gave it a good whack. A good swing and a solid strike saw the ball soar towards the green. “Good shot!” said cousin John. I watched the ball’s flight eagerly, expecting it to land on the green and set

up a welcome birdie putt. About 30 yards behind the 9th green, there is a hedge spearing a block of red brick semi-detached houses from the golf course. I recall their dormer windows vividly. My ball cleared the hedge, the back garden, and clattered on the roof tiles. It pinged right, hit the chimneybreast and shot off out of sight. My sense of excitement and expectation suddenly changed to fear and dread. When you hit this kind of shot, time begins to slow down. The ball is in motion somewhere that it shouldn’t be and all you can do is wait for the sound of breaking glass! The interminable wait for the sound of breaking glass. It didn’t come. After a few more seconds, Newton’s Laws of Physics determined that the ball must have landed somewhere. Now it was time for the Phase 2 wait. Phase 2 is where the irate owner of the property comes rushing out shouting “You there! You with the red 3-wood in your hand! I want a word with you!” But nothing happened. “Maybe they are out?” said cousin John helpfully. He wisely selected a short iron and hit his shot cautiously to the front edge of the green. “Do you want to play a provisional ball?” “No. It’s your hole.” I said nervously.

cover? I had none of these. The only insurance policy I had was to leg it as quickly as possible and hope that the game behind would get the blame. I will be off to Lytham again. Each time that I return to the scene of the crime, it is an opportunity to wistfully reminisce. A time to look back to innocent, youthful days. Days without my SkyCaddie GPS or golf clubs that you can twist the heads on to avoid a slice. Days before stimpmeters and golf balls that cost 3 Euros each. The 9th hole is at the far end of the course. It is tucked away in a corner and for the spectators, it is difficult to get to as it is usually roped off. It is usually quite a struggle to wriggle to the front of the crowd in order to get the view of the hole. If you are watching it on the BBC, look out for one of the spectators that isn’t looking at the golfers. This will be the person looking up at the roof on the red brick semi behind the green. He is thinking back over 45 years of experience, pain and triumph on the golf course. He is also thinking that “at least I now know how far I can hit a 3-wood!”

We gingerly approached the green. He putted out without any contest. In situations like this my fight or flight mechanisms are well established. I pulled my cap low down over my face, stared down at the path to the next tee and walked away as fast as possible. Golf insurance? Third party indemnity? Public liability

Sam Storey Boxing Academy Gala Dinner Hi Folks,

Sam Storey

Until next time,

Sam Storey here. It’s been over 2 years since I opened my Gym and they have just flown by. When I first conceived the gym, I wanted it to have universal appeal to men and women of all ages. I didn’t want anyone to be put off by the thought of actually having to box an opponent, so my motto has always been “Learn to Box- without the fight!” On a typical session my students will complete mixture of bag work, skipping, pads, circuit training and core exercises all without stepping into a boxing ring. After some time however a couple students showed the desire to take things to the next level and asked to learn to spar. A couple soon turned into many, and I was astounded by the boxing fever that swept the gym. I was so pleased with the progress of the students I felt it would be ideal to host a Gala Dinner to let them showcase all that they had learned to their family, friends and members of the public. I invited my Dad Gerry Storey to attend all the way from Belfast and it was an honour to have him there. For those of you that don’t know, my Dad is respected as being one of the best boxing trainers in the world and has produced 5 Olympian boxers from his Gym in Belfast winning bronze, silver and gold medals. I have to admit feeling a little nervous at his presence, but I needn’t have worried as all the fighters did me proud on the night. The evening started with a champagne

from my own personal experience, in the ring each second can feel like an eternity! All of the boys were a credit to themselves and the gym, showing heart and courage and digging deep when the going got tough. The Fight of the Night was awarded to Robbie and Maurizio.

Maurizio is a fine prospect for the future, originally from Ecuador, he trains for 3 hours a day and aims to make it big in the world of professional boxing. His commitment to training hard is paying dividends in the ring with his style and tecninique looking great. Robbie too trained hard in the run up to the fight becoming a permanent fixture in the gym. These two guys together in the ring made for an all action bout that had everyone on their feet from start to finish. It really was

reception at the restaurant Venta de La Rata in Totana, with guests then sitting down to enjoy a 5 course meal with drinks before the nights entertainment in the ring began. And what a night it was! 12 fighters stepped into the ring for six fights of 3 rounds of 3 minutes. It may not sound like a lot, but I can tell you

a tit for tat battle of determination, boxing tactics and fighting skill and their award was well deserved. The night was rounded off with a disco and all of the guests literally dancing until the sun came up! I´d like to say a massive thank you and well done to all those who fought, and thank you to all those who came to enjoy the evening. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to putting on another gala dinner later in the year. The gym is open to men and women of all ages and abilities. So those of you that wish to know more about taking up a

Ten True and Funny Interesting Facts from Past Olympic Events Rope Climbing took place in the following years: 1896, 1904, 1906, 1924, 1932. Rudimentary gym skills were all it took to win Olympic gold in the early 20th century it appears, as this event basically consisted of shimmying up a rope. Club Swinging occurred in 1904 and 1932. This consisted of swinging a club festooned with ribbons around your body and head. Strange but true. Tug-of-War between 1900 -1920. Indeed this trickiest of sports favoured by rather overweight beer drinkers in pubs was actually considered an Olympic event. We hear competitive tug-of-war gave way to another short-lived event: the 40m three-legged race. In wrestling at the Stockholm Games in 1912, the light heavyweight final between a Swede, Anders Ahlgren, and a Finn, Ivar Bohling, lasted nine hours. Since neither had gained an advantage over the other, no gold medal was awarded. Each received a silver medal. Motor boating was an official sport at the 1908 Olympics. It was frowned upon because the competitors were often out of sight of the watching crowds. Polo was played at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924, and 1936. In 1912, in Stockholm, the first electric timing devices and public address system was used at the Olympics. Ralph Craig ran in the 100m for the USA in 1912. He next competed in the Olympics in the USA yachting team, some 36 years later in 1948. The key word “amateur” was eliminated from the Olympic Charter in 1971. American swimmer Michael Phelps holds both the record for most gold medals won at an Olympic Games, eight, and most career gold medals with 14.

Paramount Resort Villa Rentals

As we move in to the peak summer letting season the number of applications for holiday rentals has increased. This has been especially so from Spanish, French and Dutch clients. Unfortunately we have had to disappoint several families as they all seem to be chasing dates from the middle of July until the beginning of September and it is difficult to find villas with pools with availability at this late stage. The boom market for us at the moment is in long term rentals and we now have a large number of villas & fincas let out for the foreseeable future. It would appear that rather than buying properties many are choosing to take out long term rentals on good quality villas for at times a number of years. So that we can continue to service the demand that we have in this area we are desperately looking for 2/3/4 bedroom villas/fincas with pools on Camposol or the surrounding areas. We have recently been approached by a well known UK villa letting company to provide a number of quality 2/3/4 bedroom villas with pools for their 2013 season catalogue and website. If you have such a villa and are interested in being part of this great opportunity you can contact us on the numbers below. www.ParamountResortVillaRentals.com email: info@paramountresortvillarentals.com Tel: Office Spain (0034) 968 970 614. Property, Financial and Legal Rods Rant….What next in the UK? The Journal has always tried to steer away from rumour, certainly from rumours intended to put the fear of God into ex pats. The Daily mail in particular seems to have a mission to destroy Spain and the Euro, even the BBC and the Guardian seem touched by an anti Europe phobia. Its not the benefits of belonging to Europe that matter, it’s the negatives that are hammered home! Much of our trade is with Europe, do we rally want to blight it? We may complain about European bureaucracy, but being outside would be far worse. A million Brits returning to the UK as disgruntled, poor refugees would really solve the UKs social and economic woes. So far we know little, just that Mr Cameron has lifted the lid of the Pandora’s box. A full scale referendum on membership? Some sort of renegotiated membership? Life out here is never dull. But the rumours, lack of consideration by the UK government on us all, including all ex pats, is beginning to get ridiculous. If you look at the media for the past few months, Greece has sunk, so has Spain to be followed by Italy! On what evidence? Market rumours! Yet the current behaviour of British Banks at the very least ranks alongside that of the Spanish banks! Rod Sawyer

Spanish civil servants protest against cuts

Workers blocked streets and railways in Madrid on Friday 13th July in protests against sweeping cuts, as the Spanish government outlined details of its €65bn austerity programme. More than 100 civil servants gathered

page 34

outside the presidential palace, whistling and booing, as prime minister Mariano Rajoy’s ministers convened to rubberstamp new tax rises and spending cuts. After a weekly cabinet meeting, the government gave details of the €65bn austerity package which Mr Rajoy announced on Wednesday. Ministers approved an overhaul of city and regional governments, wage cuts for public workers and cuts in unemployment benefits. They said they would also pass this month a reform of the energy sector and laws to liberalise the rail, road and air transport sectors. Among other expected measures, the government said an increase in VAT to 21pc from 18pc would take effect from September 1.The country also created an emergency fund to protect its regional governments from defaulting. The mechanism to help the regions, which are currently shut out of international financial markets, will have a maximum capacity of €18bn. It will be funded through a €6bn loan from the state lottery and by the Treasury. Spain is under pressure to find savings, having sought a bailout of up to €100bn for its struggling banks. Spanish lenders are almost completely locked out of international markets, illustrated by their increasing reliance on loans from the European Central Bank. Spanish banks borrowed a record €365bn from the ECB, up from €324.6bn in May, data showed on Friday. Cutbacks in Spain have caused consternation, though, with miners marching on Madrid this week to protest against cuts to industry subsidies and civil servants on Friday protest against cuts. The civil servants whose wages were cut 5pc percent on average in 2010 in the first round of austerity cuts - are usually paid 14 times a year. The government is now axing an extra payment made just before Christmas. In the Puerta del Sol in downtown Madrid, about 500 civil servants gathered, about half dressed

www.thecamposoljournal.com

in black. Some women wore veils, as if at funerals. Protesters blew whistles and horns. Isabel Perez, a 40-year-old librarian, told AP: “Our wages have already been cut and now they take away the Christmas payment. I don’t make it to the end of the month as it is. The extra payment gave some relief. We’re not exactly millionaires.” There could be more unrest to come in Spain, with the country’s main unions calling on public workers to strike in September. Deputy prime minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, acknowledged the widespread pain: “Thousands of Spaniards have been pushed to the edge, and millions are unemployed.” “Spaniards are living today one of the most difficult and traumatic moments of our history, a crisis which has muted into a daily drama for millions of Spaniards,” she added. Admitting that the austerity measures were “neither simple, nor easy, nor popular,” she said the government would try to enact the measures “with the maximum justice and equity.”

MABS EVENTS IN MAZARRÓN August 2012

Why is it that we always seem to be busy? These hot days and nights and we are still running around still wouldn’t have it any other way! I would get bored sat on the beach all day, Ha Ha!! This moth started well, we decided to go to the Fuente Alamo horse fair. This was held over the first weekend in June. There are many horses and donkeys on show many of which are sold at that time. There are also carts and side stalls and a show on the Saturday evening, anyway we were at the show on the Sunday and there we saw that a small donkey was underfed, and hooves were turning up at the front and the owner was not being kind at all to him. In our broken Spanish and his nonexistent English (he claimes) , we managed to secure this poor lad and he was taken from there straight away. We could not risk the chance of coming back later and finding the stall empty. We found an English-ish speaking man who offered to take him, ´Henry´, to our paddock. When the driver reached our rambler however he off loaded Henry and we walked him the extra distance. He has been vet checked and his hooves have now been trimmed and so he is looking dapper. He is brown with white down the front of his face, a young boy less than a year old. He has settled well with the others. Then came along Manuka. We had seen this poor girl, not far from our home and we commented on our facebook site that we would try to help her. She is about 18 to 20 years old with the tell tale ´workers back´, again her hooves were overlong. We shouted her over to us and we were horrified to see that her left eye had been pushed back into the skull and was now some 10millimetres behind the eyelid. The normal eye is actually slightly protruding from the skull, with the eyelid covering it. The eyelid to the bad eye never closes and there were numerous flies attracted to it. Having publicised this a couple of days later we were contacted by the Spanish owner who stated that he could not afford to keep her and that we could take her. What a good job it was that we lived close by as neither his nor the Charity owns a box. We made arrangements to collect her the following evening about 7 pm when the heat of the day was passing. The tow locations are less than a mile apart but due to her condition it took us until 8.30 to reach home and then we settled her down for the night. The Farrier cut her hooves and the veterinarian is considering her options about the eye. We are thinking that it will be an operation to remove it completely if she manages to save it, it is then a bonus. We now have a total of six donkeys. If you have been considering having a donkey, give me a call. You would obviously need a large paddock, sorry not seen anything on any golf complexes that would be suitable as yet, and a love for these poor creatures. Anyway must mention the dogs....We still have dogs looking for homes here are just three of them. Donations of items to sell are still very welcome and much needed as every penny raised go towards the care of animals within the charity. Till next time. Take care of yourselves and of course your family four legged friends Andrea
