JOURNAL
THE Dear Reader,
Welcome to the August edition of “The Journal”. Allow us to begin by offering our condolences to wife and family of Rod Sawyer. Sadly Rod passed away in June, and at that time we had already gone to print with the magazine so were unable to pay tribute to him here. Rod was the founder of the magazine that you are reading today. He was well known on Camposol and despite his ailing health he regularly contributed to this magazine right up until the end. He will be missed. We would like to thank all our readers for the great feedback that we are constantly receiving regarding the magazine. We are a community magazine and without the support of both our readers and advertisers then it just would not be possible. Thanks again to you all! We would like to wish one of our biggest supporters, Ken Sherwood the English Mechanic, all the best on his move. Ken and his team have upped sticks and moved to bigger more spacious premises just down the road from his old garage. For details on how to find him look out for his advert this month. Good luck guys! Also Good luck to the guys at Amazebolz who are starting out on a new adventure by opening a Paintball and Waterwalker experience. I can’t wait to get down there and give it a try. Expect a full review printed here soon! We have some great stories for you this month. My favourite has to be the one about the German tourist in Ibiza, and also we have a contribution from the charming and very interesting Victoria Moore who has taken the time to review one of the local wines produced here in the Murcia region. Enjoy the rest of the summer sun, enjoy the magazine and please, please, when contacting an advertiser remember to tell them that you saw their advert here! Regards, Robert Rutherford

I felt my legs being twisted under me with all the weight. “There was a terrifying moment when people on me were crushing my face to the ground and I couldn’t breathe. A first aid person managed to grab my hand and pull me to safety under a fence. He saved my life. I was suffocating under the weight of the people I had on top of me.”
Mr Bennett, a gas firm worker and father of one, had travelled to the fiesta with four friends. “It was the first time I’ve run and it will be the last. My wife Michelle knew I was coming here and pleaded with me not to run.” Doctors said he was lucky not to have suffered broken bones and would be discharged later in the day. The story was published in Spanish daily El Mundo on Sunday and read on the Monday morning by 37-year- old IT worker José Manuel Conde. He told reporters that he immediately thought, “Oh no, that’s my stag party!” The unusual party pickup was the idea of José’s friend, David who was helped by a third man. “We had to see how to get him there (to the party) and I had the idea of the kidnapping,” he explained. “We parked the car and the first thing we did was put on our balaclavas.” David claims that they explained to various people in the area what they were doing while they waited for José to finish work. He said that most people were laughing. “Someone else must have seen us from a distance and misinterpreted it.” The duo seized their friend, who is due to get married on the 27th of July, covered his head with a bag and threw him in the trunk of the car. “He believed it for about 20 minutes, he was scared, then he started laughing.” “When I read the news in El Mundo I freaked out a bit,” said David. He phoned the police who didn’t see the funny side of the story and insisted that David visit the station where he was warned that it had been “a dangerous game”.

SUMMER SALE
Tourist involved in Sex Toy Drama Medics in Ibiza were forced to enlist the help of buzz saw-wielding fire-fighters to free a German tourist from the clutches of a steel sex toy. Emergency services needed two hours to cut through the metal ring, described as a type of “armour plating”, into which the man had placed his penis and testicles. The firemen on hand needed two changes of battery and a second rotating blade for their buzz saw to free the man. There were “plenty of sparks” during the operation to remove the sex toy which measured 15cm in diameter. The two-hour procedure was described as “very complex” because the man became “more swollen” with time. He was also said to have complained a lot. To finish the operation it was necessary to administer a general anaesthetic. The fire crew received their unusual callout after medics at Ibiza’s Can Misses hospital discovered they didn’t have the

A Brition takes on the Spanish Banks And Wins! A laundry owner who feared losing life savings in a Spanish property scandal is celebrating after helping lawyers win a landmark legal case which has given hope to thousands of wronged Brits. Father-of-two Keith Rule, 46, spent hours trawling the Internet with the help of Google translator after a bank refused to return his £45,983 deposit on an off-plan villa never built because of the economic crisis. He took on bank bosses after discovering a 45-year-old property law making them jointly responsible with promoters for returning guaranteed deposits on failed developments. Now the businessman has not only got his money back - but helped win back nearly £1.3 million for 46 mostly British buyers whose dreams of villas on the same development in south east Spain were scuppered. Mr Rule, from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, impressed the Costa lawyers he instructed to take their case on so much, they asked him to work for them on a part-time basis. He now combines the day-to-day running of his firm on an industrial estate in his home town with his new job preparing case files for other Brits engulfed in the drama that swept him up when Spanish savings bank CAM washed its hands of buyers after an initial promise of a bank guarantee seven years ago. Last night Mr Rule, described as a ‘dog with a bone’ by one of the lawyers who agreed to fight his case through the 1968 law he found on the Internet, urged others in the same situation not to give up. Mr Rule, who handed over deposits on two villas in November 2006, said: ‘At the start of this fight people called me crazy but they don’t now and I’m delighted to have given hope to other Brits. A Spanish judge ruled CAM - now taken over by Sabadell - was guilty of malpractice for failing to ensure deposits were spent only on building the
villas and never collecting an equivalent cash safeguard from the promoters. The holiday home buyers won an initial trial against the bank and Spanish promoters Cleyton Ges in May 2012 and an appeal in March this year. A second lawsuit on behalf of 13 more Finca Parcs buyers has already been filed - and Mr Rule is working on a third lawsuit with Algeciras, Cadizbased lawyer Maria de Castro and her brother Jaime who took the first case to court. Theirs and other Spanish legal firms around Spain are also winning cases based on law 57/1968 - the law Keith uncovered on Google which has spared Brits the nightmare scenario of exhausting court battles against promoters with no money. Pensioner Reg Matthews, a friend of Mr Rule’s who has had his £22,980 deposit returned, added: ‘It’s a great relief to have my money back although I was keen on having a place in the sun like thousands of other Brits. ‘Without Keith’s help I and many others would have lost everything.’
Spain’s Chinese protest at shop owner’s death
aged 18 and 19, were later arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, violent robbery, and failing to provide emergency first aid. Two of these suspects were later released facing
charges. A third suspect was released on bail while the fourth member of the group is being held without bail, the newspaper reported. One witness said she saw two young people run out of shop in question with the owner giving chase. “The shop owner put his hand in the car window and they then closed the door. “They caught him by the fingers and dragged him at least 100 metres,” the witness said. “I haven’t been able to sleep for two days because of what I saw. You don’t even do that to a dog.” For the march, hundreds of Chinese people gathered in front of the town hall in an action organized by the Chinese Traders Association of Andalucia. The protestors said their businesses were being increasingly targeted by thieves. They called for better security and for justice.
The protest came in the wake of a robbery on in which a group of young people stole a bottle of beer from the shop. The shop’s owner gave chase but ended up being dragged along SPANISH OFFICIAL TRANSLATOR the road by the CERTIFIED AND QUALIFIED TRANSLATOR thieves’ car. According to Meteo, June and July were only likely to have short periods of summer heat which will in turn bring heavy storms in August. September and October are likely to register higher average temperatures and less rain, the French weather agency announced on Monday. The year without summer, 1816, is not an old wives’ tale. Overcast skies and cold temperatures across the northern hemisphere led to severe crop failures and food shortages in France, England, Ireland and the US during the summer months of that year.
The men, who both have criminal records for similar incidents, have been remanded in custody.
Coldest Summer in Almost 100 Years? For those that have lived here for years the prospect of having a slightly cooler summer might seem quite inviting! France’s main weather channel has announced that there is a 70 percent chance of this summer being cold and wet across Spain, France, Portugal, Germany and Austria. Cold maritime fronts and weak solar activity during the winter months have not only given us a chillier Spanish spring than normal, they’re also going to make the summer months unusually dreary and rainy.

The accused parties, Romanian nationals aged 23 and 28, live in Alicante and Valencia respectively and travelled around 5,000 kilometres a week between the two locations in hired vehicles. After stealing handbags from people at the airport, they would then travel farther afield to draw out cash using the credit and debit cards they had robbed. The Stapleton boys do it again!!
A little over a year ago I met Hayden and Tyler Stapleton after they had taken part in the Camposol Fiesta Fun Run to raise funds for MABS Mazarron. They struck me at the time as being typical boys who loved nothing more than BMX biking and computer games and apart from them both growing quite a lot over the past year, it seems nothing has changed, they are as confident as ever, doing well at school and totally embracing their lives here in Spain. This weekend I was delighted to meet up with them and their parents again and accept theproceeds of their latest efforts in this years´ Fun Run– a donation of550€.

Age Concern and its supporters have had a busy time. In June we were under the parasols at Bar Peyma for our menudel-dia. We had a pleasant afternoon enjoying good food, drink and good companay. Our Summer Fair was held on Saturday 1st June at Lagarto Verde in Puerto de Mazarron. Lots of stalls selling clothing, ceramics, pies, sweets, bags, bling etc. Many people contribute to the success of our fairs. This one generated over 800€ for Age Concern for which we are very grateful, not only to members of the public but also to the kind people who set up stalls and donate all their income to our charity. Also to the stallholders and traders who make the whole event possible by participating in our fundraising day and making it a fun day for all. On Saturday 8th June, Matt & Alan of ‘the Artisan Cooperative’ organised a very successful Craft Fair, the first of many, at the Clubhouse, Camposol. Age Concern was nominated as the recipient of donations from the door and the raffle (all prizes were donated by traders, too many to mention here!). Over 300 visitors passed through the doors and 430€ was raised for us on the day. Many thanks to Matt, Alan & the Co-operative.

Michelle Miles – Chair of Camposol Fiesta 2013 They say time flies when you are having fun and when I look back over the last 6 months I truly wonder where it went! There was the little matter of my wedding and honeymoon in the middle of it but other than that my life since November 2012 has been “Fiesta”!!! Believe me; it is not quite as exciting as it sounds! Preparations for the Camposol Fiesta 2013 didn’t start until November which is a good 3 months later than in previous years as the “old” committee had all retired paving the way for a new breed. However finding a new committee proved more difficult than expected and when I was first asked to Chair the committee….we didn’t actually have one! Eventually a committee was formed with Bruce Furness as the Secretary; Pat Firth as the Treasurer and other members Alan Hogg; Stuart Fearn; Colin Dorsett and Nicola Green. Trudy Mockford acted as our official translator (and an excellent job she did too!) One of the biggest challenges we faced as a committee was fundraising. Although a substantial surplus had been carried forward from the previous year; we wanted to do the same, as well as put on a first class festival. We

discovered the hard way that fundraising “events” was not the way forward and concentrated our efforts on weekly raffles and of course the Grand Fiesta Draw. In previous years this had been a car but we decided to do something different for this year’s Fiesta and the first prize was a 5000 Euro Holiday Voucher. We also had runner up prizes of smaller value holiday vouchers; a 32 inch TV from Euronics; a Puncture Safe Tyre voucher and a Derek’s H2ozone Water Filter System. The new prizes proved extremely popular and all tickets were sold by early evening on the Saturday of the Fiesta. The other big decision was to “condense” but not shorten the Fiesta so that it started on Friday evening and ran almost non-stop until midnight on the Saturday night. Friday evening was dedicated to Tribute Acts most of whom regularly perform locally. and the stage was filled with performers. The Camposol Guitar Club kicked off the entertainment followed by the Harlequins Rock Choir who were quite marvellous! There was a fashion show by Sector B’s very own “Branded” and a Talent Show sponsored by “Miles Better Entertainment”. The show was judged by “Two Shoes”, the UK X Factor Finalists and Ken “Simon Cowell” Payne. The standard of performers was excellent with singers; dancers and musicians of all ages. The Judges were genuinely impressed. However the unanimous winner was Jay Buckley, a cheeky 11 year old who wowed the crowd with his rendition of “I’m Sexy and I know it” and “Jailhouse Rock”. Undoubtedly a megastar in the making! The show then continued with a traditional Spanish flavour. Firstly the amazingly talented and beautiful Flamenco dancers from the Raquel Pena Dance Company; followed by the fantastic vocals of “Pitu”. Following Pitu, the stage was packed with the girls and boys of Camposol’s very own “Murcia Dance”. They gave an excellent and energetic performance which proved as popular as ever with the gathered throng of supporters. Unfortunately it was after their performance that the “unmentionable” happened! Once again the sound system let us down. Soul Power, a superb Soul & Motown Band, from Torrevieja were unable to hear themselves and found it difficult to continue. No amount of fiddling by the sound guys could improve on the sound and by the time the girls from Two Shoes came to perform, the sound was untenable. Thankfully Lucy & Charley from “Two Shoes” were the consummate professionals and although unable to sing, they entertained the crowd; posing for photographs and signing autographs. They really were “Totes Amazeballs”!!! Ultimately Byron and I decided that the live music would have to be halted and Stevie T saved the day with disco party tunes that kept the dance floor full and the Commercial Centre rocking. We brought the Fireworks Finale forward by half an hour and watched somewhat wearily whilst the crowd whooped and squealed as the sky was lit up by possibly the best display ever seen over Camposol. On behalf of the Committee, I would like to say a special thank you to Byron our Compere who was tremendous throughout the 2 days. I would also like to thank all our sponsors; supporters and raffle ticket sellers without whom this Fiesta would not have been possible. Yes there are lessons to be learned for next year…Oops did I just say that………but overall our feedback is that it was the best Fiesta to date…… Just don’t mention the sound system!!!

Wine Review
by Victoria Moore
- Jean de la Fontaine
Castillio de Madax 2011, available from Frutas Iguazu in Totana. Price: 1.50€ This is a hearty red wine from Jumilla, and is a”MonastrellTempranillo”. The low-yield grapes come from 40year-old vines in the northeast of the region, a location approximately 700 meters high; they are then aged for four months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Its a great wine to accompany and red meats, duck or even roast turkey. In the glass there is a deep mahogany, black-cherry red, with just a hint of purple at the edge. On swirling, the aroma is not shy, and brings smoky candied cherries and plums out of the glass. The flavour is first of sweet raisins, with figs and plums coming through on the big tangy mid-palate. The finish is carried by husky acids and a touch of tannin. Its a very pleasant, full, round, somewhat distinctive red wine; I’m not certain if there would be a lot left after hours in the decanter or years in the basement. But I would come back to try it again, so I would give it three stars out of five. At around 6-7 pounds a bottle in the UK, its a very modest price in Spain and this wine hits a fine quality/price point. In today’s world we are all striving for Financial Safety, Security and Savings, however it is a sad fact that there are only two certainties in life – Death and Taxes – both of which can be expensive if not dealt with properly. An IBERIAN FUNERAL PLAN will take care for the provision of life’s final event: Safety – We are the only Spanish S.L. registered Funeral Planning Company. We specialise in Funeral Plans for the English speaking community, nothing else. You are guaranteed acceptance whatever your age, plus the plan will always be in effect, however long you live. Security – If you decide to pay in Euro your money stays in Spain with BBVA/ Santander. If you pay in GBP it is deposited with HSBC in the UK. All plans are legally registered with the Ministry of Economics. Our Terms and Conditions are just that – legal and binding. They are not a statement allowing us to do what we want, when we want and charge you extra for the pleasure. Savings – Iberian plans are fixed cost;the price advertised is the price you will pay. There are no hidden extras. Should you wish to pay by instalments we offer terms of up to 5 years, totally interest free. You also have the option to pay in Euro or GBP (Sterling).
www.thecamposoljournal.com
Contracts are in place with National and International Funeral directors assuring that your plan is registered from day 1. We operate a 24 hour bereavement helpline number so you will always be in contact with a professional who knows your exact requirements. Thinking of returning to the U.K or any other part of Europe, then your plan can go with you; it is as easy as that! We are not a one man band, nor an agent of a UK Company, nor a UK Company operating a Trust Fund. A pension fund is written in Trust, a life insurance policy is written in Trust – and we have all heard about the “Black Holes” in Pension Schemes and the loss in value of personal pensions. Trust funds are not a legal accounting entity in Spain and are only a marketing ploy. So in summary if you want to deal with an ethical, legal, caring company with regards to making provisions for life’s final event then IBERIAN should be your first choice. No fuss, no hassle and no pressure
We all have to die some day, if we live long enough.

Save Money on Funeral Expenses “Buy Today Die Tomorrow However Long You Live” NO this is not a Joke! As with all other goods and services in Spain Funeral Expenses are rising in price annually – So our commitment to You is: *Fixed price Funeral Plan from Day 1 *Price is frozen from the moment you sign *No hidden extras added at time of death *Totally interest free, the price you see is the price you pay *VAT/IVA exempt We are a fully legal Spanish SL Company and we know that other Companies in the market place cannot commit to the above, so before you make a decision consider this: Do not believe all you see and hear. Check out the facts before committing to something you may later regret, look at the small print for the hidden payments/extras above the basic cost of a funeral plan, what’s the interest rate being charged for the pleasure of paying by instalments? Is there a front end or rear end payment above the cost of the plan, are the terms and conditions just that terms and conditions, or a statement of intent allowing additional costs to be added at the sellers whim. Competition is Healthy so why is it feared? Please look at our website prices start at €3390, our IVA exemption certificate is there, from the Spanish Tax Office, so are our terms and conditions. IFP – Iberian sell only Funeral Plans we are not an Insurance Company, an Insurance agent, a one man band or a UK Company selling into Spain, all our written plans are registered with the Spanish Authorities (Hacienda) so for an ethical, secure, cost saving solution to funeral expenses Reg no 11138305//CIF no B93156107 IFP – Iberian offering Safety, Security & Savings

In order to give you an insight to what we have done to date in 2011 we had 80 callouts, in 2012 we had 103 and this year so far we have had 61 call outs, 75-80% of these have had an ambulance in attendance and the teams have dealt with things from slips, trips, and falls to severe bleeds, heart attacks, strokes and shock plus other incidents too various and numerous to mention. FAST will be holding an Open Day in the very near future where residents and visitors can pop in and see what we do and have a bit of hands on experience at the same time so watch for the posters and come along to see what it’s all about. May we again take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support. FAST
F.A.S.T (First Aid Support Team) have successfully completed two years of operation on Camposol and on the 1st June this year was the first day of year three. They say that from little acorns grow the mighty oak trees well the same can be said for FAST, from an idea and small beginnings the growth of a fantastic team of volunteers has come about with the sole intention of helping anyone on Camposol in need of emergency first aid support until the arrival of the Emergency Medical Services. We, the committee and members of FAST would like to thank all who have supported us since our inception and through your support, donations and generosity we are pleased to announce that we have been able to purchase two second-hand vehicles for a total of â‚Ź6,600 to respond to your calls for assistance from FAST. Up to now our volunteers have used their own cars at their own expense, but now having dedicated vehicles fitted with the necessary equipment required to carry out this unique service this will no longer be the case. The vehicles have been seen driving

The design and artwork for the vehicles was contracted out to Danny of INSIGNIA GRAPHICS, Isla Plana, who specialises in vehicle artwork and I am sure you will agree he has done a sterling job on our vehicles. In addition to the vehicles the President of FAST and Head Trainer Gerry Bradshaw has successfully undergone additional training to achieve a two year Teaching Certificate through the Emergency First Response Corporation which is a worldwide organisation and the knowledge and skills developed will be passed on to all responders within FAST thus ensuring up to date training, qualifications and accreditation. Furthermore to ensure the skills are maintained to the highest levels, four FAST members have now undergone

Shopaholics Paradise Lost Here in the region of Murcia we are fortunate to be blessed with many
excellent Shopping Malls. Nueva Condemina, Thader, Lorca, Cartagena, and for those daring enough to step across the border into Alicante, the gargantuan La Zenia. Retail is a big business the world over. Would you travel to the worlds largest Shopping Mall for the ultimate shopping experience? Well don’t rush because even the most committed shoppers might actually struggle to spend their money there! (Please note that Shopaholics may find this distressing reading) The New South China Mal l is Located about 50 miles north of Hong Kong in Dongguan, China, the largest mall in the world by gross leasable area. Twice the size of United States’ Mall of America, it was opened with room for 2,350 stores in 7.1 million square feet of leasable space. No mall in the world can rival New South China in any category. Except
perhaps in number of tenants. Despite having every amenity a shopper could want, the mall has been 99% vacant since it’s opening in 2005 The project was ambitious; at time of construction it was the largest mall in the world with over 9.6 million square feet in total area. The mall was designed with everything, and was constructed anticipating 100,000 visitors a day. It was built with a 1.3-mile indoor canal featuring gondola rides, it has a large Egyptian sphinx, and it even contains an 1800-foot indoor roller coaster. Inside there are seven areas modeled after international cultures and themes: Amsterdam, California, the Caribbean, Egypt, Paris, Rome, and Venice, and even the worlds first licensed Teletubby theme park.
So what went wrong? Well, visitors from outside the area have difficulty coming to visit the New South China Mall as Dongguan doesn’t have an airport; the closest commercial airport is over an hour away. Local residents don’t have it much easier. There is no train or direct bus service. Car is the easiest way to get the Mall, however Dongguan is a factory town where the poor have come to find

on shopping and rollercoasters. The main entry to the mall does show signs of life however with several restaurants such as McDonald’s, KFC, and Pizza Hut. The Teletubby theme park a features a Merry-go-Round as well as a mini-train ride for children that circles the park. There is also an interactive music centre, bumper cars, and a recreational project centre. Despite all this, the theme park sees very few visitors and the rides go unused. Even without visitors the music continues to chillingly echo throughout vacant hallways, and even in the vacant areas the lights stay on. Maintenance crews tend to the property, but it’s a skeleton crew for how large the mall is. Equipped proportionately for how few stores there are, the handful of workers can’t possibly keep up with the maintenance requirements of such a massive complex.
Dirty canvases cover the closed escalators while dusty corridors and peeling paint distract one’s eyes from the scattered rubbish along the floors. The snaking canal, over a mile long, has turned green and swampy. With a lack of proper chlorination it has developed it’s own ecosystem. Ever optimistic, the current ownership group still has grand aspirations for the mall; the head off the ownership group, Ye Jining, said he aimed to increase mall occupancy to 80% by the end of 2013. Time is ticking Mr Jining!

What is arterial hypertension? Arterial hypertension is a disease that is due to increased blood pressure. Blood circulates in the body through the arteries and veins of the heart through the impetus, which acts as an engine. Blood pressure depends on the force with which the heart pumps blood and
also on the degree of resistance of the walls of the veins and arteries. We talk about high blood pressure when the maximum pressure is over 140 mmHg and the minimum is over 90 mmHg. The figure indicates the maximum pressure at the time of the impulse of the heart and the minimum number pressure when the heart relaxes. Why does hypertension happen? Hypertension is more common in older people because the walls of the arteries and veins become harder and less elastic over the years: this is what we call atherosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis produce more resistance to the flow of blood and results therefore hypertension. Is there any factor that contribute to hypertension? Although it is known that there is no exact cause, there are factors that are related to hypertension are : Obesity is a major factor associated with hypertension. Tobacco is another major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, if you smoke, stop immediately because you are putting your life in danger. Excessive alcohol consumption is also

Do you have teenage children or grandchildren? If so, the chances are they use social networking sites like Facebook. In an unprecedented turn of events in the United States, one teenager has found himself locked up and facing a lengthy jail sentence due to a remark made while playing an online game. On February 14, just two months after the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, an 18-year-old in Texas named Justin Carter was arrested. Carter, an avid gamer, got into a spat with a fellow League of Legends player on Facebook. After being provoked and told he was “messed up in the

could spend ten years in jail for the Facebook comment. The judge also gave him an unusually high bond, $500,000, which his family can’t afford to pay. Carter’s trial is beginning this month but in the meantime, the teen’s father says his son has fallen into a deep depression. “He’s very depressed, he’s very scared,” Jack Carter said, telling CNN that his son feels like he’ll never leave prison. “He’s pretty much lost all hope.” In a recent interview, Jack Carter painted a more gruesome picture of his son’s experience in jail. He says his son has had “concussions, black eyes” and “moved four times for his own protection.” He also says his son is nude in solitary confinement because of his depression.

While Carter’s father understands why authorities had to investigate his son, he doesn’t feel an impulsive comment on Facebook should be this detrimental. “He says he’s really sorry. SARALARA’S REMEMBERS! FORCES CHARITY CALENDAR LAUNCHED
Friday 5th July was a big day for Sara Peters of Saralara’s Bar in Puerto de Mazarron and her friends and customers. The 2014 charity calendar, which has been in various stages of production since January, arrived from the printers and was launched in style. Most of the 15 ladies who appear in the calendar were on hand to autograph copies for the many people who came to support the event and see the calendar, which is the first of its kind in the Mazarron area. The idea was conceived by Sara, who wanted to exceed the funds she raised in previous years for the Ex Servicemen’s Association of Mazarron District (ESAMD) and the annual Poppy Appeal. So, Sara and her team decided to produce a calendar along the lines of
the popular film ‘The Calendar Girls’ but with a different theme – the 1940’s and the wartime era, incorporating poppies and well-known slogans from that period. The result is a professionallymade, tasteful and artistic product which is flying off the shelves and over 100 copies were sold in the first hour and 200 in less than a week. Sponsorship was provided by Brian Jones, Godfrey Hyde and Gary Sockett (the three amigos), Tuxedo Limousines and Viggos/ Bocapizza. Would you brave the Dinner in the Sky? One diner experienced it and said: “My husband thought it would be romantic to take me to dinner overlooking Vegas at a height of over 150 feet. “What he didn’t know is that I would completely freak out and be terrified when I saw what we were going to do ... So here I was terrified in the beginning and once we got going I realised it really wasn’t going to be bad at all. In fact, I really enjoyed myself.” Dinner in the Sky opens officially in late summer and will cost from $290 (£185) per person including a three-course meal with wine and a souvenir photo. We only have one question...what do you do if you need to go to toilet?

Rod Sawyer I’ve now been sat for at least 10 minutes staring at a blank page on my laptop. Where and how do I start? How can a few words written here by me pay tribute to my friend and the founder of the magazine that you are reading today. I know that wherever he is, Rod is looking down laughing at my writers block! Rod Sawyer was a pleasure to work with. Sometimes he was difficult, other times impossible, but Rod was a mine of information on every topic imaginable. I don’t think in all the years I knew him there was ever a topic that he never had an opinion on. And he was never shy on giving you his opinion either. That was one of the qualities that I most admired about him. While I am pretty easy going guy who likes to avoid conflict, arguments or upsetting people, Rod was the opposite. He was never afraid to raise his head above the parapet and let rip with both barrels with absolute disregard to the fact that that his opinions might not win him any friends. Anyone who knew Rod well can testify to this. His opinions were his and he stuck to them unwaveringly and under all circumstances. One can’t help but feel that world would be a better place if there were more people like Rod, prepared to stand up for themselves and their beliefs rather than just shuffle along through life afraid of upsetting the status quo. Some of my best memories of spending time with Rod were on the numerous occasions when we went for coffee. Normally the subject of Scottish Independence would come up and before long, a chat over a coffee had turned into a heated debate with my face flushed and finger pointing. I regarded Rod as a mentor when it came to debating. He

had a true politician’s style, always keeping his cool while verbally baiting his opponent in an attempt to make them lose theirs. The first rule was to keep calm and never lose your cool. Rod was a professional when it came to this and I not even an amateur. As I mentioned before Rod was the founder of this magazine. Throughout the years it was his passion and his valuable contribution that helped the magazine to get where it is today. I smile when I remember his “Out and About” column. One month it became the stuff of legend when he gave a local restaurant a review that they were less than pleased with. When I close my eyes I can still see those words. They are etched in my brain forever. As I read them over in my mind’s eye I also see myself standing, mouth agape in a silent scream as I realise just how much trouble Rod has gotten me into. Again. Things just won’t be the same without him. They say that a life well lived will be remembered. And Rod lived his life well. And we will miss and remember him. A quote from one of my favourite movies: “Every man dies, but not every man truly lives.” Rod Sawyer truly lived. Sleep well Big Man, Robbie
Thoughts About A Friend
at one of the bars on A - at that time I was in the initial stages of my thoughts to live here on a permanent basis. Despite my life experience of dealing with a wide selection of people, I found Rod quite alternative and, in fact, quite challenging. In fact, this continued throughout our friendship and in some sense he could be a difficult person to get to know, never mind understand - but then I have always been a glutton for punishment - pardon the pun. Despite that, I found our friendship to be very rewarding and Rod helped me to prepare myself for living and working in this my first “expat environment” in which we all live. This was a difficult but necessary adjustment for me - in those early days we spent quite a lot of time working together on the Camposol District Journal - Rod on the one hand could be very compassionate and on the other quite belligerent, even awkward! Rod had an encouraging attitude that there was always another viewpoint, even if he didnt agree with it, it was there and had a value - its all part of the cake! This is an honesty and frankness which not many convey. We all influence each other in different ways - and having been influenced we are aware that the behaviour of our own thoughts change - and this is why the memory of Rod Sawyer will stay in my mind for some years to come. Thanks Rod
A sad day recently - when a friend of mine passed away - I knew the day would come - and following it my thoughts from my reflections of the last 5 years. I first met Rod some 5 years ago

CRA PRESS RELEASE FOR JULY/ AUGUST
There will not be a press release next month as everything goes on hold during the holiday period.
Bob Owen reported that recently, he and Les Crook met with Lloyd Milen, British Vice Consul from Alicante and Bernadette Gallagher, Property and Consular Policy Advisor from the Embassy in Madrid. They updated them as to the current situation on Camposol. Although the Embassy or Consul was powerless in matters of Spain they can and do attempt to influence matters through meetings themselves with regional and local government. Both Lloyd and Bernadette commented on the professional way in which the CRA operates and the fact that they continually meet with those in authority in an attempt to resolve problems. They said this was by far the most organised and effective ex pat residents group in Southern Spain. Most urbanisations are unorganised and continually complain to the Embassy who is in general powerless to act on their behalf. Bob explained that they had helped one other urbanisation group to get established and had advised them on the legal way forward in forming a residents association. It was felt that the CRA could help others to which Bob & Les confirmed they were willing to help the Vice Consul in this task. Bernadette said she followed our news and minutes on our website so Bob offered to put her on the monthly email newsletter distribution list. This has now been done. Saladillo District Mayor Report Jose Navarro reported on various issues and various meetings and appointments he had had during the last month, these were with the Mayor of Mazarron (GinesCampillo) and various other Councillors and their respective departments, and Juan Carlos (The Town Halls Lawyer) There were many issues discussed during these meetings and some points are still to be finalised, however the following points are made as a basic resume Aqualia and the Council had still not been able to finalise any agreements and another meeting was imminent. Masa had approached the Council to offer a new agreement with regards to completion, the Council have responded saying they will cooperate if they 1) Release the bank bonds 2) Instigate a payment plan of €8m. The Council have made it quite clear that they will cooperate if these conditions are met by Masa, or they will simply continue along the legal route if they do not. In the end Masa refused to agree with the councils demands so no agreement was reached.
page 26
The Rambla and CHS situation is still very much on going and is likely to be for some time. The CHS still proving to be very difficult to communicate with, although there was a meeting with the Town Hall planned. 34 Replacement and extra rubbish bins have been supplied at the CRA´s request. The use of the Cultural Centre for a polling station in future elections, is still awaiting a decision from Murcia and the delegation from Central Govt, despite the petition and application to do so was presented a long time ago. The issues that are either currently being discussed, or issues that will be discussed in the near future, in summary are: Streetlights – Children’s Recreational area specifications – Street Signs across Camposol – The official renaming of sectors from A-B-C-D The use of the Cultural centre for duties such as Padron Registration etc - The legal status of the “Back Road” – The compost Pits on D – 2 more garden waste bins . Jose reported that the procedure to be adopted for reporting abandoned and infested swimming pools was to contact Tatiana at the cultural centre, by email or personal visit. If no action has been taken after 14 days then to contact him directly with the details. Jose reported that he was looking into the C14/16 pavements and major drain problem along with the Environmental Health Councillor. He further reported on the compound on B3, he had called the department of Urbanism requesting a report on the structure and land. This he has been told is now available for him. The structure is owned by a Ceramic Tile Company (PaferAzulejos) however they do not own the land. The enforcement is now looking to be directed at the Company to demolish the structure. Jose reported that he is in urgent discussion with Juan Carlos the town halls lawyer with regards to the legalisation of some properties on B4 He was in discussions with Cllr Matildeon sector name changes. Although the change for Sector A to “Los Palacios” is highly possible to do, it is not yet official in the eyes of the Council. All 4 sectors would need to seek approval and apply at the same time to the Council. Any names for each sector must have an association from maps and plans of the area. Jose is working on this and a plan and application will be put for consultation before it is submitted to a Council Plenum. Jose reported that a list of areas available for children’s play area´s on A/B/C/D has been given to him. However the Council does not have the funds to provide / build these. They are prepared to provide the technical specification and plans but the funds of approx €8,000 for equipment only (Per area) would have to be sourced by other means. Therefore it is unlikely in the near future to happen.

A discussion was raised over the piece of land opposite Masa’s old office that was flattened for a football pitch. Apparently this land has an embargo on it and has recently been up for auction, so there are some historical errors in its original allocation. Political sub committee. Dr Peter Pitt, the chairman of the Political Sub Committee gave a concise report of the last meeting of the PSC, He along with his subcommittee was still very concerned over the lack of any form of response from anyone official, over the application to use the Cultural Centre for a polling station. Jose was asked to take this matter up with the Mayor of Mazarron. Peter reported that the constitution for the new proposed political party “The Camposol & District Independent Party “was now complete. Massive recognition needs to be given to PSC Vice Chairman and CRA member Robert Mooney for the achievement of this. Now after numerous meetings between the PSC and the full CRA committee, along with meeting other groups (i.e. The Mazarron Country Club) it was officially proposed that the name ofthe proposed political party was to be, “The Camposol & District Independent Party” Peter further reported that he felt that the PSC had now done its job, what was important now was promotion and sourcing 3 Spanish Nationals to head the party. Register for the padron and voting at the Cultural Centre. From September 27th between 10am and 12am, residents will be able to register for the padron and the voting register at the Cultural Centre on Sector B. Staff from the Town Hall will attend on the 2nd and last Fridays of each month to attend to resident’s needs. This has been requested by the CRA for some time but it was agreed at the last meeting that Jose and Bob had with the UIDM executive committee. We are now the only urbanisation with full council office services in the municipality of Mazarron. Bob Owen to stand down as Chairman. Bob is standing down as Chairman with effect from 3rd July. He is suffering from on-going health problems which he needs time to address. He remains an active committee member but will be unable to give the time necessary to carry out the Chairman’s role. Jackie Drewe takes over as Acting Chairman and all other officers’ positions remain unchanged. Rod Sawyer. The CRA Committee were saddened to learn of Rod´s passing. Rod was a committed CRA supporter and recently served on the CRA Political Sub Committee. He will be missed. www.cracamposol.cominfo@ cracamposol.com

We´ll Never Walk Anywhere Again! What do you get when you cross a
Segway and a mobility scooter? The electric RYNO scooter that is apparently impossible to fall off. The one-wheeled, battery-powered scooter can travel at a speed of up to 25mph and can be parked anywhere, free of charge. It was designed by Portland-based RYNO Motors specifically for commuters to help beat the traffic and avoid expensive parking charges. The RYNO works like a Segway - the driver must lean forward to accelerate and backward to decelerate. But unlike a Segway, the RYNO scooter is also fitted with selfbalancing technology that means the scooter will automatically right itself if the driver leans too far to the left or right, or too far forwards and backwards. It weighs 57kg and can cope with slopes of up to 30 per cent gradient.

‘With a product like RYNO, a rider can slip behind a wall, cut up the alley, around behind the big oak tree, down though the park and emerge at a destination long before anyone driving a car could ever get there” Said the firms CEO Chris Hoffman ‘Plus a RYNO can be parked anywhere a bike can be parked, free of charge.’ The designers also claim it can be taken on trains and driven through pedestrianised areas and shops in the same way mobility scooters can. Its inventors add: ‘Or simply ride the RYNO through a lobby and up the elevator to your own apartment.’ Although the RYNO reaches speeds of 25mph, it is regulated when being driven in cities and towns to 12.5mph. The RYNO’s battery can be removed and be plugged into electricity sockets to charge.

The company hasn’t released full specifications or price details but it is expected to cost around £2,250, according to figures released when the concept was launched in 2010.

What’s most innovative about this new offshore wind turbine is the floating structure that supports it. The turbine will be able to generate electricity on the high seas.

Technology sponsored by This offshore turbine will be moored four kilometers off the coast of northern Spain (Vizcaya) and will be the first of its kind in service. The 97 meter tall structure will rest on a semi-submerged floating base in the shape of a tripod, with three interconnected pontoons. The three pontoons, each 25 meters in length, will be partly hollow. Thanks to a complex system of tubing, water acting as ballast will flow through their interior in order to maintain them in equilibrium and keep the tower from sinking or falling over. The turbine’s dimensions are colossal and it will be capable of producing electricity on the high seas. Experts believe that the future of renewable energy is at sea using offshore structures, which have much less environmental and visual impact than those on dry land. Why has the Spanish coast been chosen for this important program? Mainly for two reasons: first, a significant number of the companies collaborating on the project—called HiPRwind—are based in this region; secondly and above all, the turbine will take advantage of the Bimep infrastructure (Biscay Marine Energy Platform), a protected, five square kilometer area that is reserved for producing wave energy.
History of Desalination The idea that pure water could be made from seawater has been tantalizing thirsty humans for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The original premise was based on the idea that boiling or evaporating water separates the water from the salt. That theory— vaporization or distillation—was behind the technology for the first large-scale desalination plants that sprouted in desert areas in the 1950s and 1960s, primarily in the Middle East. These areas, lacking water but with plenty of fuel to burn, turned one resource, energy, into what the region craved: water. The technologies using heat, though, require vast amounts of energy. Researchers throughout the early 1900s had been studying the idea of using a membrane to separate out salt from seawater. This is based on the osmotic nature of cell walls: certain semipermeable membranes, such as animal and plant cell walls, allow water to pass through, creating an equilibrium between a highly concentrated solution on one side of the membrane and a diluted concentration on the other. Scientists hypothesized that with the right amount of pressure and with the correct membrane design, this natural
phenomenon could be reversed through a man-made membrane. Instead of flowing from a diluted solution to a highly concentrated one, equalizing them both, the concentrate could be forced through a membrane, leaving an even higher concentrated solution of dissolved solids (in this case, salt) behind. In the 1960s, researchers in the U. S. and Japan who developed membranes for industrial purposes soon realized that those same semipermeable manmade membranes could be used in desalination. By the 1970s, desalinationplant developers adopted reverse osmosis (RO) for use in new desalination plants. Though more efficient than vaporization or distillation and requiring far less physical space for the same operation, these plants still demanded a high energy input. Over time, engineers developed recovery systems to take advantage of the high pressure of waste brine left after the reverse-osmosis process. This has led to precipitous drops in energy needs for the process, reducing the cost, while the cost of the membranes used in reverse-osmosis technology have
also dropped about 50 percent. At the same time, conventional sources of fresh water have proven more costly in recent years. In some areas, coastal aquifers are depleted of water before they can refill naturally, leading to the intrusion of seawater. All these factors contribute to the fact that, in some regions, desalination has become costcompetitive with traditional methods of supplying water needs.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Around the beginning of this month, while I’m reading the online edition of the Newspaper I write for ‘back home’ with a mixture of disbelief and a rather large smirk, I noticed the news about a local Welsh school sports day being cancelled due to a drop of the wet stuff. We’re not even talking rain, or downpours, we’re talking the sparkly stuff. Dew. Well, duw, duw. (That’s a Welsh-ism for ‘blow me down’ or similar.) Health and safety meant the head teacher decided a bit of damp on the grass meant the little darlings were at risk of life and limb should they attempt an egg and spoon race, or the three legged race. How on earth did we all survive past the age of ten, I wonder, what with conkers poking our eyes out and tripping over the hopscotch chalk marks and ‘drown-dead’ when losing our grip on the rope swing created over a fast flowing stream? Unbelievable really, as I remembered the night of the 24th June, when Virgoman and I raced up the motorway to Alicante, which at midnight on that date turns into an epic fire-fest. While the children in South Wales risked certain death moving apace over damp grass, the offspring and parents on the streets of Alicante could have easily featured on a 24 hour news spectacular should that have been the UK. It’s over to ‘Breaking News’, available on any satellite channel even though it normally broke twelve hours earlier. (They like to keep that banner flashing, usually blotting out the view of the actual event.) ‘Reports are reaching us during these early hours of rioting in the city of ---------- streets. (Insert any UK city) Huge fires are burning in the main areas, with thousands of people storming the metal barricades as firemen attempt to hold them back with hosepipes. Rockets light up the night sky. It’s truly a riot of unwarranted proportions. The end of a civilised behaviour as we know it.’ Now let me take you across to a Spanish newsroom, where they too, are reporting on the same event. Let me translate. I’m

quite good at that in an emergency. ‘Tonight, the annual burning of the Hogueras (enormous papier mache figures) and part of the week long San Juan celebrations, is taking place in the main square, outside the town hall, where the fifty foot high creation resembling a mermaid, was set alight at midnight, to the sound of repeater rockets signalling the beginning of the festivities, and in other cul de sacs, the slightly smaller figures were also blaze. Firemen hosed down the shop fronts, trees and electricity cables overhead to prevent them catching fire, and as the streets glowed red, turned their hoses on the crowds amassed behind the safety barriers, for the traditional ‘bath’;- soaking all the participants, their cameras and iPhones. Fireworks lit up the sky afterwards. A great time was had by all.’ Just a matter of perspective, really. Or a right riot.

Ingredients 200g new potatoes, thickly sliced 2 medium eggs 100g green beans, trimmed 1 romaine lettuce heart, leaves separated and washed 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 6 anchovies in olive oil, drained well 197g can tuna steak in spring water, drained 2 tbsp reduced-fat mayonnaise Method Bring a large pan of water to the boil. Add the potatoes and the eggs, and cook for 7 mins. Scoop the eggs out of the pan, tip in the green beans and cook for a further 4 mins. Drain the potatoes, beans and eggs in a colander under cold running water until cool. Leave to dry. Peel the eggs and cut into quarters. Arrange the lettuce leaves in 2 shallow bowls. Ingredients
Method
1.2kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into biggish chunks 1 tbsp olive oil For the dressing 2 shallots (or half a small red onion), finely chopped 4 spring onions, finely sliced small bunch chives, snipped into quarters or use mini ones 5 tbsp sherry vinegar 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp honey
Put the eggs in a pan of cold water and bring to the boil. Boil for 3 mins, then lift into a bowl of iced water and cool completely. Very carefully peel away the shells. Leave the eggs in the iced water until you finish the recipe, or for up to 1 hr ahead. Mix the shallot with the vinegar and a pinch of salt, then set aside for a few minutes to soften. Whisk in the mustard, oil and chives, if using, to make a dressing. Heat the grill to low-medium and cook the bacon until crisp right through. Remove the bacon, then brush the bacon juice and fat all over the bread. Grill the bread for about 1 min on each side until crisp, then cut into soldiers and keep warm. Just before serving, bring the pan of water back to the boil and add the eggs. Boil for 1 min to reheat. Toss the dressing with the watercress and divide between 2 plates. Top with an egg and 2 rashers of bacon, with the toast to the side. The egg yolks will still be runny inside.
Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Toss the sweet potato chunks with the olive oil and some seasoning, and spread on a baking parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast for 30 - 35 mins until tender and golden. Cool at room temperature. When just about cool whisk together all the dressing ingredients with a little more seasoning and gently toss through the potato chunks – use your hands to avoid breaking them up.

Murcia man dies after drinking nine pints of beer in 20 minutes A 45-YEAR-OLD man has died after downing six litres of beer in 20 minutes in a drinking competition in Gea y Truyols (Murcia). The victim, a local resident who worked as a porter and had a degree in history, won the competition which involved drinking as many quarter-pints – the size of a cup from a drinking-water dispenser – as possible in the 20-minute time-limit. He downed the equivalent of nine pints of beer in this time, then began to vomit and suffer dizzy spells. His friends called the 112 emergency hotline and an ambulance rushed straight to the scene. Paramedics performed CPR on him en route to A&E, as his heart and breathing had stopped, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia city. Local authorities have suspended the patron saint fiestas in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and declared three days of mourning with the flag on the town hall at half-mast. The funeral was held at the La Tercia chapel in Gea y Truyols. His death has highlighted the dangers of excess alcohol, most commonly found
during fiestas or on weekend nights in summer, although previous campaigns to promote responsible drinking or abstinence have mainly targeted teenagers and very young adults.
Spanish are not talking proper!
Cervantes and Lorca in favour of a simpler, more limited vocabulary. Spanish has become ‘something of a street language’ believes the country’s leading linguist Victor Garcia de la Concha. The boss of the respected Cervantes Institute believes it has become ‘fashionable to speak badly’ after analysing the nature and evolution of the current Spanish language. He believes it is constantly changing and claims it has developed an ‘unusual’ energy and liveliness. Speaking in Casares, he insisted that this energy is not always a positive thing and he blames the waning sophistication in Spanish speech on the ‘predominantly audio-visual’ culture. “There is a great deal of neglect in the manner of speaking,” he said. “It is a rather shabby period.” The Cervantes Institute is the world’s largest organization for the promotion of the study and teaching of Spanish language and culture.
SPAIN’S rich linguistic history is being lost as Spaniards are increasingly ignoring the words of great writers

Health &Wellbeing We remember the feeling of deep connectedness they give us, and the fact that even when the love we feel seems inspired by someone or something in particular, it has a profoundly impersonal, universal quality. And sometimes, the Great Love hits us unveiled, as it were, and changes our lives.
Thank you for your recent emails questioning and confirming that all too difficult human feeling called love. Some say that they can give love generously without wanting reward and yet others confess that they struggle to show that emotion. Could it be that we are all just different? Neither one good nor bad, right or wrong, just different. Going back a little over last month’s article I wanted to continue the topic of Love, this time looking from a spiritual point of view.... Some teachers tell us that our essence is love; others say love is a passion, an emotion that leads to addiction and clinging. If we are on a devotional path like bhakti yoga, we are often taught that the way to enlightenment is to fall in love with God and let that love grow until it engulfs us and we become one with the Beloved. We are soon left to wonder where the truth lies in all of this. When spiritual teachers use the word love, what kind of love are they talking about? Is eros (romantic or sexual love) really different from agape, the so-called unconditional or spiritual love? Is devotional love the same as compassion, or love for humanity? Is love something we have to feel, or is it enough to offer kindness and direct positive thoughts toward ourselves and others? In spiritual life alone, the word love is used in at least three ways, and our experience and understanding of love will differ according to which aspect of it we are thinking about.: Absolute Love, or the Great Love, which Ramakrishna, Rumi, and the teachers of the bhakti yoga tell us is ever- present, impersonal, and the very underpinning of the universe, our Individual experience of love, which is quirky, personal, and usually directed at something or someone and love as Sadhana (practice). Love as Absolute Love with a capital L: That’s the Great Love, love as the source of everything. At this level, love is another name for Absolute Reality, Supreme Consciousness, Brahman, God, the Tao, the Source—that vast presence the Shaivite tradition sometimes calls the Heart. The yoga tradition often describes Absolute Reality as satchidananda—meaning that it is pure beingness, present everywhere and in everything (sat), that it is innately conscious (chit), and that it is the essence of joy and love (ananda). Most of us get glimpses of the Great Love at some time in our lives—perhaps in nature, or with an intimate partner, or in the moment of bonding with our children. We remember these experiences for years afterwards, often for the rest of our lives.
page 40
Can you remember a time when without warning, an overwhelming experience of joy has welled up within you? This state springs up seemingly out of nowhere, a sensation of tenderness and ecstasy that seems just to flow in the air, carrying with it a sense that you are connected to everything. These experiences inspire us. They give us a burning desire to get back to it and once again follow our spiritual practice. Sometimes however, when we get a glimpse of unconditional tenderness, we project our inner experience onto the person we happen to be with and decide that they are the love of our life and the mate of our soul. Individual Love All of us, throughout our lives, constantly project onto other people and things the feelings of love that actually come from within. “It was the music,” we say. “It was the children’s singing. It was the surf! It was my teacher’s presence!” Yet the yogic view is that all of our experiences of human love are actually glimpses of the Great Love. It is only when love filters through the human psyche that it begins to look specific and limited. It becomes veiled by our thoughts and feelings, and we start to think that love comes and goes, that we can feel it only for certain people, or that there’s not enough love to go around. We can not help doing this. Our senses and mind give us the experience of separateness and distinction, set us up to think that love is outside us, that some people and places and things are lovable and others are not, and furthermore that love has different flavours: mother love, romantic love, love of movies, love of nature, compassionate love, sexual love, love of the cosy feeling of being under the covers on a winter’s morning.

I once heard someone ask a great spiritual teacher, “Will loving you cause me to suffer the way I have suffered from loving other people?” The teacher replied, “If you love me in the way you have loved other people, you will suffer.” He was saying that as long as we think that love comes from something outside ourselves—even from God or a spiritual master—we are going to experience pain. Think also of the pain we suffer when, like my friend Cindy, we do not feel loving enough, or when we can not force love to come in the form we want it to, or when we feel lonely or unappreciated, or when, despite the fact that we know attachment leads to suffering, we can’t help thinking that the love we were feeling came from Joe or Alice, and that love is gone because Joe or Alice is gone! Love as Sadhana The third kind of love—love as a practice— is the cure for the emptiness we sometimes feel between our sense of what love can be and the actuality of our ordinary experience of it. The practice of love—actions and attitudes that create an atmosphere of kindness, acceptance, and unity in ourselves and in those around us—is not only the basis of spiritual life, it is also the basis of civilization. We can not always feel gratitude, but we can remember to say thank you. We can not always like other people, but we can try to pay attention when they talk to us and help them out when they are in trouble. We may not feel good about ourselves all the time, but we can practice treating ourselves gently, slowing down and breathing when we want to rush, or talking back to our inner voices of self-criticism and judgment. When it comes to daily life, feeling love may
If the Great Love brings everything naturally together, our individual, human experience of love is subject to change and loss, moods and tides, attachments and aversions. It does not matter who or what we love; at some point, the object of our love will disappear from our life or disappoint us or stop being lovable, simply because change is the nature of existence. So individual love is always touched with suffering, even when the love we feel is “spiritual.”

Health &Wellbeing actually be less important than acting loving. This is not meant as an argument for false smiles, or for the common game of hiding anger and judgment behind a mask of false sweetness. The practice of loving is never about presenting a false front. Instead, it is an active answer to one of life’s greatest questions: How can I, in spite of what I may be feeling at a particular moment, offer my best to myself and other people? Ask yourself (as Cindy did), How would I act if I were feeling love?—you will eventually discover the practice that helps melt your frozen heart, so the love that always hides behind our emotional barricades can show its face. One of my students, caught in an argument with her stepson, asked herself, “How would I be if I really felt love right now?” The answer that came up was “relaxed.” So she practiced relaxing with the breath and was able to talk with her son without fear and without judgment both of which had been separating the two of them. “You think it is so easy” was a comment that came in from an email last month. My reply was “I only think, why should it be so difficult?” What stops us from loving, from expressing these emotions, from enjoying that great human feeling? Is it Fear, Anger, Lack of confidence in ourselves, lack of trust in others? Whatever excuse we make for ourselves it is clear that we are living life a little short, if we can not participate with that old devil called love... I really do appreciate and welcome all of your comments so please feel free to contact me yogawithlisa@hotmail.co.uk..
BEST PROTECTION UNDER THE SUN The sun´s rays make us feel good, and in the short term, make us look good. But our love affair isn´t a two-way street: Exposure to sun causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces. When the sun burns your skin it leaves an imprint for lifelong. Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun´s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. The skin also bruises and tears more easily— taking longer to heal. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you´re young, it will definitely show later in life. Exposure to the sun causes: Pre-cancerous (actinic keratosis) and cancerous (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma) skin lesions, benign tumors, fine and coarse wrinkles, freckles, discolored areas of the skin, called mottled pigmentation, a yellow discoloration of the skin, the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin. After a few disappointing seasons the 2012/13 season gave rise to a genuine sense of optimism with Mazarron finishing in a mid table position which could easily have been improved upon had the early season results been better. The turnover of players at the end of every season at this level of football in Spain is usually great but it is hoped that many of last year’s team will remain to help in a genuine attempt to achieve promotion back to the Preferente Autonomica. Training was due to commence during the last week of July when local talent will be given the opportunity to impress including youngsters like Perico, who became a regular in the second half of last season, Victor and prolific striker, Jose, together with a number of other youngsters who have progressed through Mazarron’s youth system. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said: "The decision for Zaragoza follows our company’s strategy of building vehicles where we sell them." The decision will help address Opel capacity underutilization in Europe and "is good news for the entire organization," he said in the statement. "We will be able to produce the Mokka in greater numbers and supply our customers more quickly," Neumann said. Opel said Mokka production will initially be from CKD (completely knocked down) kits following an $80 million investment in Zaragoza for production but localization will gradually increase. The decision will help to safeguard the 5,800 jobs at the plant. The two other models currently built at Zaragoza, the Corsa sub compact and Meriva compact van, are grappling with shrinking demand, pushing their 2012 sales down by 14 percent and 36 percent respectively. The Mokka is a sister model to the Chevrolet Trax which is also built in Bupyeong, and the

orders from the region since the car went on sale in June 2012, a spokesman said.
Opel sold 32,342 Mokkas in Europe in the first five months, according to market researchers JATO Dynamics, closing the gap on the segment’s bestseller, the Dacia Duster, which sold 39,237 units and No.2, the Nissan Juke, which sold 48,043 units. Opel lost $1.8 billion in Europe last year as it struggled to cover the fixed costs of factories operating far below capacity. Auto sales in the austeritystrapped region plunged to a twodecade low in May, further eroding hopes for recovery this year.
Sales declines slowed in Italy, Spain and France in June The decline in Italian, Spanish and French car sales slowed in June, raising some hopes that the bottom of a five-year slump in the crisis-hit European market could be close.
In Italy, Europe’s fourth-largest car market, June sales fell 6 percent on the year compared with the 8 percent plunge seen a month earlier, while in Spain they fell 1 percent versus May’s 3 percent drop. In France, car registrations fell 9

low after five years of contraction. “It’s a fairly constrained fall compared to the recent past, especially if we bear in mind that June had one less working day than June 2012,” Italy’s automotive research group, Centro Studi Promotor, said in a note. And it was also brighter news on the orders front. According to Italian foreign carmakers’ association, UNRAE, orders for new cars grew almost 7 percent in June. But Promotor said that on the basis of first-half results, Italian sales for the whole year would be around 1.26 million vehicles -- a level not seen since the 1970s and a 50 percent decline compared with 2007, which was the year before the sales slump started. France’s main industry body, CCFA, reiterated its forecast of an 8 percent decline in sales for the full year, saying that the market is probably nearing the bottom of its slump. French new-car sales at struggling PSA/Peugeot-Citroen dropped a further 10 percent, while French rival Renault was able to slow down the decline in June to 4 percent from a drop of 17 percent in May. In Spain, one of the markets hit hardest by Europe’s debt crisis, a government subsidy scheme has helped sales to individuals, which rose 14 percent on the year, but this failed to offset a 24 percent decline in sales to companies.

Property, Financial and Legal YOUR MONEY – YOUR PROPERTY !! How important they are to us throughout our lives – how best to make the use of them ?? That is the question. The answer ? well read on……. Lets start with property – the dream is to have your own place, as an adult you work hard, even harder, and eventually you get there – we can remember this from our lives in the UK – even with the mortgage we somehow manage to increase the value of our investment by selling and buying another, etc. and way hay! Eventually… the stage in our lives when the mortgage is paid off, the kids have left home, and we can think of retiring and living in a different climate or maybe having a holiday home. It’s a long hard road with no guarantees at the end but, fingers crossed, we achieve something for all those years of graft. One thing which has continued to surprise me throughout my years of practice, is that people can underestimate the values of that property , even if not reflected in the financial terms we would like. I’m referring to the values of independence and choice. Many times, I have been approached by a client who has decided to “give away” this most important asset to another member of the

Property Bargains around the world
By Allan Doyle.
Last month we had a look at the most expensive property for sale here in Spain. The hilltop mansion named “El Cielo” on the north coast of Mallorca is on the market for a cool 57.5 million Euros. If you were offended to think that a human being could spend that much on a home while children starve in this
world then stop reading now. No really, put the magazine down and switch on the Jeremy Kyle show because this month I have a property that will blow your mind. To buy it you might need a lottery win. Or several hundred lottery wins. Won the Lottery? 290,000,000€ (you read that right-two hundred and ninety million Euros) This six-storey Grade I listed Regency mansion is a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace and boasts 50,000 sq ft of living space, making it one of the London’s largest private homes. The property is 1,537 times more expensive than the average house sold last month in the UK, which was worth £162,606. At the asking price, the buyer will face a £17.5million bill for stamp duty. (If you listen hard enough you can hear George Osborne rubbing his hands together) Details on the property’s interior are sketchy; it is believed to boast a magnificent double staircase and huge ballroom. Photos of the interior are rumoured to be black and white from 1890 as the current owner
doesn’t want to advertise his belongings and are said to be published in a top secret brochure that is circulating amongst the super rich. The property which is registered in the British Virgin Islands, is thought to be owned by a member of the Saudi royal family and with 2012 being a record
year for sales in London over 5 million sterling, he obviously feels confident that it will sell. For those of you who are interested, let’s do the maths. For the purposes of

The town of Gary Indiana was once named as the “City of the Century” with US Steel employing 25,000 people. Due to overseas competition little more than 5,000 of those jobs remain and Gary has seen a 55% decrease in it population. Today abandoned homes and buildings litter the city attracting vandals and
Spanish Airports Lost 6% of Passengers up to June During the first half of the year Spanish airports accounted for a total of 84.8 million passengers, which represented a drop of 5.9% over the previous year, according to figures released by the Spanish airports manager, AENA. A total of 841,406 flight operations were registered from January to June 2013, which is 10.6% less than for the same period last year. El Mundo reported that seven of the 47 Spanish airports and aerodromes have improved their passenger figures so far this year, with positive data being recorded for Palma de Mallorca, Malaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante, Ibiza, Menorca, Reus and La Gomera. Madrid-Barajas airport lost 14.7% of passengers to June, with a total of 18.9 million passengers, and the number of operations dropped by 13.2% to 163,441.
criminals. So bad is the situation that City officials are now thinking about cutting off services to 40% of the cities land, moving residents to more viable
The airport of Barcelona-El Prat, registered a total of 16.1 million passengers, representing a drop of 1.8%, with 6.4% fewer operations, equating to 132,065 flights. The airport in Palma de Mallorca ranked in third position with over 9.2 million passengers in the first six months of the year, which is 0.8% more than in the same period of 2012, despite reducing its flight operations by 3.3%, with 73,025 takeoffs and landings. Spanish airports registered a total of 18.5 million passengers in June, representing 3.3% fewer travellers, with a 7% decrease in the number of operations to 170,386.
parts of the city. We´ve all heard of Ghost Towns before, but could Gary, Indiana become a Ghost City? Recently I read a a report on the findings of a Uswitch survey that claims Spain is the best place in Europe to live with the UK coming last! Apparently in Spain we have the highest number of hours of Sunshine, the highest number of days holiday (43!) and the lowest alcohol prices of the 10 countries surveyed. It left me wondering who actually took part in the survery. Probably not any of the 57% unemployed under 25´s living here in Spain who are being forced travel to other European countries to find work.

OECD Predicts Spain’s Unemployment Will Reach 27.8% in 2014 According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the unemployment rate in Spain, which was 26.9% in May, will continue to rise and will stand at 27.8% in late 2014, when it will remain the second highest of the 34 countries in the OECD, lower only than the 28.2% of Greece.
reduction in unemployment in 2014, from the 27% of this year to 26.5% next year. However, their revision of the July forecasts reduced Spain’s growth prospects from 0.7% to zero in 2014, which could have a significant effect on employment. The European Commission estimated in May that the unemployment rate would be 27% this year and 26.4% in 2014. For comparison, the Spanish Government calculates unemployment rates of 27.1% and 26.7%, respectively. According to the OECD, Spain and Greece will continue to more than triple the average level of unemployment in the countries of the Organisation, which according to a report will go from the current 8% to 7.8% at the end of next year. They are also the countries which have suffered the biggest increases in their unemployment rates since the crisis began in 2007, with more than 18 percentage points of a rise in both cases, and more than four million additional unemployed in Spain. The OECD, which considered the 55% youth unemployment rate in Spain as “alarming”, estimated that the labour reform last year has brought Spain’s legislation in line with “labour legislation in most European countries”, and that its effects “should increase labour productivity and job creation when economic growth resumes”. The report noted: “If these reforms are fully implemented, they can promote a more inclusive labour market and better allocation of resources with improved productivity.” El Mundo reported that in the chapter on Spain, the OECD expressed concern over rising long-term unemployment – up 19.1% from the fourth quarter of 2007 to 47% in late 2012 – and also stressed that the proportion of young people working has declined by 21 percentage points since the beginning of the crisis in Spain, which is five times more than the OECD average. Furthermore, the report noted that the proportion of those who neither study nor work (the “ninis”) has risen seven points, which highlights a situation “particularly vulnerable” to the threat that a prolonged period of inactivity may adversely affect the whole of their working life. The report also pointed out that the increase in youth unemployment has affected more men than women, and in particular those with less qualifications.
In their April forecast, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted a

The Journal book review The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Rachel Joyce (Author)
Rachel Joyce’s debut novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is no doubt going to be one of those books that will be remembered in 2012 and also spoken about for a long time. Newly retired, Harold Fry receives a letter one morning from Queenie, a woman he used to work with; she has written to say that she is nearing the end of her life. After much soul searching Harold drafts a reply and goes out after his breakfast to post the letter. However he gets to the first post box and rather than post the letter he keeps on walking onto the next, suddenly he finds himself making an unlikely journey by walking from his home in Devon to Queenie in Berwick on Tweed. The book follows the journey, as he makes the decision to walk the distance in the hope of proving something to himself, saving someone and ultimately having a purpose in life. He walks with what he left his house in, on his feet are yachting shoes and this become a symbol for the journey as they cause him pain and heartache as the journey
page 50
progresses. Along the way Harold meets a diverse mix of people who he treats as he finds and who treat him accordingly, all of them have stories to tell and as readers we are suddenly given a glimpse into someone else’s life; Martina the doctor from Slovakia waiting for the man who left her, tends and heals Harold so his journey can continue. One of the turning points in the story comes when others wish to join such a pilgrimage and it then becomes not about Harold’s journey to reach Queenie but everyone else walking, making a statement and making a journey. It was at this point that I felt the book was painful to read; these parasites on Harold’s journey caused him pain both physically and mentally and when they made Berwick on Tweed after Harold purposely loses them it is a relief as it goes back to Harold’s journey. This is not a criticism of the plot but it actually evoked sentiment about who the journey was about, those that made it to Berwick on Tweed were not important they wanted the glory and the coverage, which was not what Harold’s journey was all about. Joyce handles all of this with such emotional lyrical language you feel touched by everything and everyone that Harold comes into contact with. Back at home Harold’s wife Maureen is going through her own journey without leaving the house. There is a rift between Harold and his wife and her obsessive cleaning and her obvious annoyance at anything Harold does, touches, says, does not do, acts has driven a very large wedge between them. Maureen seeks solace in talking to their son David, but Harold cannot see what this is ever going to achieve. As Harold continues, Maureen then starts to have to survive on her own, is it necessary to clean as much, will
www.thecamposoljournal.com
talking to David actually help her and bring back Harold or will personal changes she has to make be the only way to heal the rift that has grown into a chasm. As Berwick on Tweed is reached by Harold, everything changes and perhaps he is not an unlikely character as we all thought. What I loved about this book was that as you started reading you knew nothing about the characters, (as is the norm with a book obviously) but even after fifty pages, there were still gaping holes in background knowledge that would make you understand why they were reacting as they were. This is what makes this book and the journey captivating as you want to know why they are reacting the way they are; what did Queenie do to help Harold all them years ago? Why will Harold not talk to David? So many questions are waiting to be answered, but as with all journeys many more are waiting to be discovered as well.

PALS EVENTS 2013
Ups and downs here this month - it’s been extremely busy, what with the new shop, some new arrivals, and new contacts made. We have collected a donkey and a Shetland pony from the perrera in Murcia who were due to be put to sleep to ‘create space’ - there are also 3 horses there and we are in negotiations with the perrera to get them out too. The two we managed to get out went straight up to the hospital in Alicante for treatment and castration, which cost nearly €1,000 but was definitely needed! The pony had been hoofed and bitten by the horse he was put in with, and we think this caused damage to both his back legs as he had to have operations on his knee-caps. While we were there we also arranged adoption of 4 dogs - two maltese/bichon crosses, one boxer and a terrier type puppy who were all scheduled for ‘sacrifice’ (as they so lovingly call it!) Ana, the terrier type, was adopted almost immediately but had to be returned to us after she developed symptoms of Parvovirus. She went straight into the vets and was there for a few days and is now recovering well at home. Unfortunately she passed the Parvo on to one of the pups, little Marky, who sadly died. The other pups have been given injections to boost their immune system so hopefully they will be ok. Marky R.I.P
The new shop is doing well, but we are struggling for staff in both Mazarron and Fuente Alamo, so if you are able to give us just four hours of your time per week/fortnight/month, please get in touch! We have had several adoptions this month - Danny, the little podenco pup from the road in Mazarron; Rowen, one of the two pups thrust into Andrea’s arms; Poppet, one of the new girls
To remind you we are at SaraLaras on a Wednesday afternoon 1 till 3 or Saturday morning at the Trevi from 11 till 1.30 or call me on 626 460 465.

A funeral service is held for a woman who just passed away. As the pallbearers carry the casket out, they accidentally bump into a wall.
A guy out on the golf course takes a high speed ball right in the crotch. Writhing in agony, he falls to the ground. As soon as he could manage, he took himself to the doctor. He said “How bad is it doc? I’m going on my honeymoon next weekend my fiancé is still a virgin - in every way”
They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the woman is actually alive.
The doctor told him, “I’ll have to put your Willie in a splint to let it heal and keep it straight. It should be okay next week.” He took four tongue depressors and formed a neat little 4 sided splint, and taped it all together .... an impressive work of art.
As they are walking, the husband cries out, “Watch out for the wall!”
The guy mentioned none of this to his girl, married her, and went on their honeymoon. That night in the motel room, she ripped open her blouse to reveal her beautiful breasts. She said, “You’re the first; no one has EVER touched these.” He immediately dropped his pants and replied ...”Look at this,....still in the CRATE!” Martin Sallu Plastics
A newlywed couple on their honeymoon prepares to see each other naked for the first time. The husband exposes his knotted and twisted feet. He explains, “I had tolio as a child.” The wife asks if he means polio. He says, “No, it only affects the toes.” He removes his pants and reveals deformed knees. He admits, “I had kneesles, too.” Finally, he pulls off his boxers. In shock, the woman gasps, “Oh no -- smallcox, too!”
She lives for 10 more years and then dies. They have another funeral for her. At the end of the service, the pallbearers carry out the casket.

a beautiful princess, I’ll stay with you for a month and do whatever you say. What more do you want?” The engineer says, “Look, I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that’s cool!”
One Sunday morning, Satan appeared before a small town congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front church door, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away. Soon, everyone was gone, except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly. Satan walked up to the man and said, “Don’t you know who I am?”
A: Ken’s car, Ken’s boat, Ken’s house, Ken’s moterbike, Ken’s bank account.........................
The man replied, “Yep, sure do.”
An engineer crosses a road when a frog calls out to him, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.”
“Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man.
He bends over, picks up the frog and puts it in his pocket. The frog speaks up again and says, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week.” The engineer takes the frog out of his pocket, smiles at it and returns it to the pocket. The frog then cries out, “If you kiss me and turn me back, I’ll do whatever you say!” Again the engineer takes the frog out, smiles at it and puts it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asks, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m
Satan asked, “Aren’t you going to run?”
Perturbed, Satan asked, “Why aren’t you afraid of me?” The man calmly replied, “Been married to your sister for over 48 years.”
