JOURNAL

THE

Dear Readers, Welcome to the August edition of The Journal! This month we fantastic magazine for you to enjoy, bursting at the seams with news and features! The debate about dogs and their owners on urbinisation Camposol rages on in this month’s magazine as we print a small selection of the e-mails that we received from people on both sides of the debate. The anonymous author of the original letter which sparked the whole fiery debate has reported to us that the they have received a huge number of letters supporting their position on this matter and are considering compiling a list of irresponsible dog owners. From The Journal´s point of view, we think that the debate has now run its course. It is a topic that will always be divisive, and both sides have had their say. We would like you to pay special attention to the information regarding the newly formed Camposol District and Independence Party which you will later in the magazine. This is a very important topic and the CDIP are a brand new political party to the area, so please take the time to read their advert. As it is holiday season and many of us will have visitors, there has never been more going on in the area to keep everyone entertained. There is loads happening this month to suit all ages and interests! There is a Fun Day at the Camposol Golf Club on Saturday 16th organised by Miles Better Entertainments, Amazebolz are in full summer swing with their unique Water Walker and Paintball experience, Solaz Boat Cruises are now several times daily from Puerto de Mazarron, Cafteria El Faro a have opened a stunning new sun terrace with breath-taking views, and most the local Bars and Restaurants have regular entertainment. There is a really great, positive atmosphere at the moment, and this busiest that we can remember for many years. This is great for local businesses and long may it continue. The only negative news that we have this month is that the powers that be have BANNED NUDISM on the beaches of Vera in Almeria! That’s half a million German holidays ruined then… Last but by no means least we would like to say “Get well soon” to our Graphic Designer -Danny from Insignia Graphics. Despite a quite spectacular skateboarding accident he managed to overcome the pain and aided by some strong painkillers finish this month’s magazine from his wheelchair. Thanks Danny, you´ll be back on the board in no time! Enjoy the magazine, enjoy the sunshine and have fun this summer! See you next month, Robert Rutherford

Spain Heads Cocaine and Cannabis Use in Europe with France and the UK

Spain is usually at the bottom of the list when it comes to comparisons with the rest of Europe. But, this is one survey where Spain came out on top, together with the UK and France. According to annual European Observatory Drugs Report, which was published earlier this week, Spain maintains its leading position with the other two aforementioned countries for the consumption of cannabis and cocaine in Europe, although their use has diminished somewhat since 2008. However, whilst the use of ‘traditional’ drugs has fallen, probably due to their cost, the use of nasty, synthetic stimulants and psychoactive cheap drugs has replaced it. It has been estimated that around 2.2 million young adults between the ages of 15 and 34 (1.7% of this age group) took cocaine, which is still the leading stimulating drug, last year in Europe. In Spain, the percentage is above average, at 3.6% of young people. Spain is followed by the United Kingdom (3.3%), Ireland (2.8%) and Denmark (2.4%). The lowest consumers of cocaine are from Greece and Rumania (0.2%). Various methods were used to produce these results, including an examination of residual water in various cities to check for the remains of illegal substances. Out of the 42 cities studied,

Entry into Europe Almost all of the cocaine that enters Europe comes from either Bolivia, Columbia or Peru. And, their first port of call is usually a southern European country such as Spain, France or Italy. In fact, most of the cocaine destined for the whole of Europe enters into Spain before anywhere else. In 2012, a total of 381,000 drugs seizures were made in Spain, which was the highest amount of confiscations. Following Spain, there were 226,000 confiscations in the UK. No other European country had more than 80,000 drugs seizures in 2012.

Facebook experiment proves that social networks can alter your mood

Cannabis Cannabis is the most widely taken drug amongst young people of all age groups, although its use is declining. It is estimated that 14.6 million young people (11.2%) took the drug last year. In this category, Spain occupies 4th place with 17%, behind the Czech Republic (18.5%), Denmark (17.6%) and France (17.5%). Barcelona is the 4th European city with the highest amount of cannabis residual found in the water, behind Paris, Novi Sad (Serbia) and Antwerp. The lowest cannabis consumption can be found in Rumania (0.6%), Malta (1.9%) and Greece (3.2%). Other illegal substance use Young Spaniards also exceeded the European average for the consumption of ecstasy (1.4% against 1%) and amphetamines (1.1% against 0.9%). Thankfully, the consumption and availability of probably the worst drug out there, heroin, is falling. Nevertheless, there are still 1.3 million opium users with chronic problems in Europe, the majority of them on heroin. New drugs’ use increase There has been a rise in the use of cheap, synthetic illegal substances such as methamphetamines. Their consumption was previously limited to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but it seems that it is now extending through Germany and even other nearby countries including Greece, Cyprus and Turkey.

What is more worrying is that some of these substances can be bought ‘legally’ over the Internet, mainly from China and India, and authorities have been alerted to the rise in websites advertising them.

only London, Zurich and Antwerp exceeded Barcelona and Valencia for cocaine use.

Before you begin stalking a frenemy’s tragic life on Facebook to feel a sense of schadenfreude, know this: that depression could rub off on you. At least that’s the conclusion Facebook’s researches came up with when they turned 689,000 users into guinea pigs for seven days, gaming what they could see on their News Feeds to see if it influences their moods. According to a paper recently published in PNAS, the social network used software to identify positive and negative words in status updates and to segregate posts into the two categories. Facebook then massaged the subjects’ News Feeds to show mostly positive or negative posts. In the end, the company’s researchers proved that emotions can be contagious even without direct contact on social networks, and even if you’re only reading words on a screen. By the end of the experiment, those who’d been subjected to positive status updates posted happy ones of their own, and vice versa. Those mostly exposed to posts that were neither positive nor negative in nature, though, were also less emotional (on the social network, anyway) in the following days. If you’re wondering, this experiment took place way back in January 2012 -- and yes, it’s perfectly legal, even if it sounds like a huge invasion of privacy. Facebook claims it used machines for the whole process, and none of the researchers actually saw people’s posts themselves. Also, you apparently all agreed to be the social network’s lab rat the moment you accepted the website’s terms of service

Notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting The Camposol Residents Association, Central Liaison Committee has reached a crossroads in its life. For the last five years under my chairmanship I have led a happy but determined group of volunteers whose only objective has been the betterment of all things on Camposol. We have had many successes and steady progress has been made on a lot of fronts especially with the latest government coalition team. More so than the previous administration. I am sure I don’t need to list these for you here. Not everything we would wish for has been achieved but we carry on regardless keeping constant pressure on the council. We have only been able to continually meet with the powers that be because we are non-political and merely your representatives with the council. On this basis we meet with councillors of all denominations as we are not perceived as a political threat. I realised a couple of years ago that perhaps the long term way forward to influence our progress was to be represented by elected councillors whose sole aim would be the completion of Camposol. To this end I proposed changes in our constitution to allow us to explore these possibilities and removed “non-political” from our rules of association. This enabled us to form a political subcommittee which some of the members developed into an independent group, the end result of which was the formation of the Camposol & District Independent Party (see page 31). It is this independent party that will seek election at next Mays local elections. It is not a division of, or a branch of the CRA. It is completely independent. It also enabled us to lobby the Mayor for our own District Mayor to be appointed from our own committee dedicated to the wellbeing of residents. Jose Navarro was duly appointed and has given us direct access to most town hall departments and councillors. Many residents have also benefited from his personal assistance. The purpose of the removal of the “non-political” clause has served its purpose and we must look to the future and reinstate our non-political status. If the CRA, Central Liaison Committee continues it must remain independent of any

page 6

political party and remain impartial if it’s to continue to be able to negotiate with councillors of all parties, it cannot be seen as a political threat. As I said earlier we have now reached a crossroads in our life. We have a committee now that is made up of a majority of members whose political support is for the new independent party and there is nothing wrong with that, every individual is free to support the party of their choice. This does not however bode well in future negotiations with councillors or the Mayor if they perceive us to be political opposition so your Central Liaison Committee´s future needs to be reviewed as soon as possible. I believe that the committee must remain impartial to maintain future negotiating rights. Any political involvement would jeopardise this. You can’t wear two hats in this situation. Do you feel that the current role of the Central Liaison Committee has run its course and we would be better dissolving the CRA and allowing others to take the political lead? This decision cannot be made by a handful of people on the committee but I believe needs to be put to the

www.thejournalspain.es

membership at an Extraordinary General Meeting to determine its future role. To this end I propose that we hold an Extraordinary General Meeting on Saturday 16th August at 10am at Marrianos restaurant on Sector A. The proposals to consider are; Proposal (1.) I believe that the committee must remain politically impartial to maintain future negotiating rights. Any political involvement would jeopardise this. Because the current committee has a majority of politically motivated members do you believe that the current role of the CRA has run its course and we should dissolve the association. Proposed By Jackie Drewe Seconded by Sandy Allison Proposal ( 2.) If the CRA is to continue in its present format I propose that the 2012 change in the rule regarding the removal of the words “non-political” be rescinded and the association return to being a nonpolitical organisation. Proposed by Jackie Drewe Seconded by Sandy Allison. Proposal (3.) PROPOSAL:- We believe that the

2014

CRA should continue as at present as a residents association and that the CRA should endorse the Camposol and District Independent Party as it’s official political voice. Proposed by Tom Finnegan Seconded by Paul Drury. Proposal (4.) In the event that proposal (1.) Is carried and the association is dissolved I propose that the Fighting Fund is allocated to each sector gardening and community group apportioned by the number of members on each sector. After dispensing with any outstanding invoices and expenses the General Fund should be donated to the Camposol and District Independent Party (CDiP). For information each share of the fighting fund is worth 5.8381785€. This equates to; Sector A 388 members x 5.8381785=2265.21€ Sector B 532 members x 5.8381785=3105.91€ Sector C 609 members x 5.8381785=3555.45€ Sector D 1540 members x 5.8381785=8990.79€ The current general fund stands at 2372.27€ less any outstanding expenses for donation to the CDiP. Proposed by Bob Owen Seconded by Jackie Drewe. PROXY VOTING: Please submit your proxy votes by

forward the possibility of rectifying the situation, which ‘evidently goes against the special characteristics of Vera and its peculiarities as an important place for nudism’. Last year the town made the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of nudists bathing in the sea, and days after they held the first naked crosscountry run in a naturist zone. In the Madrid International Tourism Fair, FITUR, they promoted nudity as the ‘queen’ of tourism in the town, which has been so historically.

Nudists Told To Cover Up In Vera Vera Town Hall has approved an ordinance which prohibits nudity on their beaches Given that Vera hosts one of the largest, if not the largest, nudist colonies in Europe, the unclothed are quite angry. The ordinance states, going top-less or naked in public spaces is to be prohibited in Vera, when it is published in the Official Provincial Bulletin.

2014

The Partido Andalucía, who voted against the measure, described it as ‘a botched job’. The Vera Town Hall has now said the controversy had been ‘a mistake’, and they put

Mobile Phone Roaming Costs Slashed

The cost of using your mobile phone to connect to the Internet whilst you are abroad in another country within the European Union will be 55% cheaper than last year from 1 July. The cost for roaming is currently 45 cents per mega and this will be reduced to 20 cents (excluding VAT) from next week. For anyone that travels to the UK a lot, or any other EU country, for that matter, this could mean saving a significant amount of money when it comes to using your mobile. However, critics opposing roaming costs in the first place when we are supposedly in a single market hope that they will be eliminated by the end of the year. In fact, the European Parliament has already approved the banning of recharging phone when ‘roaming’, which will come into force from 15 December 2015. Thanks to EU legislation, recharges when roaming have been reduced by between 80 and 90% since 2007. Needless to say, the majority of Europe’s mobile phone operators, including Telefónica, France Telecom or Deutsche Telekom, are not happy with this new regulation and argue that consequently they will generate less money, which will mean they have less to invest in new technologies such as extending fibre optic networks etc. From the beginning of next month, mobile phone operators will be able to offer their clients a specific roaming plan, which can be organised before going away, or clients will even be able to choose to connect to a local network within the country they are visiting for the duration of their stay.

by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/ certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration.

Registering a nonSpanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process.

All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. Readers Letters

Dear Editor,

DOG NUISANCE AND INCONSIDERATE PARKING Having now read two anonymous articles and a letter on the above subjects in the last two editions, and resisting the temptation to respond to the first article about dog fouling. I now feel that I have to respond because I cannot resist commenting on the ignorance of the persons contributing. Firstly, both contributors talk about Camposol as if it were a separate governing community, presumably because it is an urbanisation in Mazarron district! Well on that count, whilst we are an urbanisation we are a part of Mazarron municipality and come under the governance of the town council. We were constructed and developed to be a selfgoverning Entidad Urbanistica and should have indeed been able to pass bye-laws of our choosing (within reason and in accordance with the Law and Constitution of Spain). But NO, we chose to be part of Mazarron municipality and have the Council govern us in entirety. And that is really where we are at, just like any other barrio of Mazarron; we even have our own appointed Mayor. So, a. Why should we ban dogs on Camposol or limit the number per household? b. Why should we advocate traffic wardens and double yellow lines, etc (reminder: they are single yellow lines in Spain)? Inversiones Rustisol

Well the answer to a. and b. is because neither we (on Camposol) nor our governing council have the authority to do so. We have national, regional and municipal laws now that make us responsible for controlling our pets and where we can and cannot park our vehicles. What our two contributors are trying to suggest is that we should be able to do as we please as regard making rules and laws, etc. Well, in this respect, you had your chance and chose the way you wanted to go, that is to say; be part of the municipality and not follow the Entidad Urbanistica route! (A reminder is given to all to read the Garrigues Report which can be seen on the CRA web-site). Our contributors express their concern on pet dogs and inconsiderate vehicle owners being a nuisance on many points. But Camposol, like the rest of our

municipality relies heavily on the tourist industry to keep the economy sound and this is also a major factor in providing employment. Do we want to stop people bringing their dogs on holiday with them as many do? Do we want to establish draconian laws on vehicle owners, many of them high spending holidaymakers? NO, of course not. We do however need to show consideration for others and guard against showing our ignorance of the law in our chosen country of settlement. We are not a law unto ourselves and should never follow that path. I have provided my personal details to accompany this submission as I believe that to hide behind anonymity shows a lack of courage. Yours faithfully, Stan Long Sector A (Los Palacios) Email: long.stanley52@gmail.com

In Defence of Dogs I write in response to the lead letter on page 14 of your July edition. To a certain extent I agree with the comments made regarding dog mess and sympathise with the contributor on the irritation of dogs constant barking. However; he does come across as a Mr Angry in what seems a one sided tirade by a non-dog owner, against dog owners. This is borne out by the vitriol in his own words “along with the many others of his ilk who masquerade as good neighbours” It’s sad that you have this particular problem with your neighbour, and all the others you find despicable. I

have personally found that most people are reasonable and for the most part understanding, if approached in the correct manner, so perhaps it’s not all down to the neighbours attitude. Dog owning residents compared to all residents on Camposol are by a large margin still in the minority and the vast majority of these are considerate and responsible in relation to their animals and other residents. The streets and pavements of Camposol in all sectors have less dog mess than any comparable UK estate, it is only a small element that lets the side down, and you get that similar element everywhere including the UK. I agree that the campos are littered with dog mess and this is the case even though some dog owners pick up mess and dispose of it more appropriately. The campo is also littered with all sorts of waste from fly tipping, broken tiles, building rubble and garden rubbish, so not exactly an ideal stroll for anyone. What’s the answer to the dog mess issue? Doggie bins on the campo? A dog warden? Who will pay? There is potential rich pickings for the council, but don’t hold your breath. Some of the diseases mentioned can be transmitted to humans, but these cases are as rare as rabies infection to humans. The majority of dog owners will also have their pets inoculated against diseases. Do I detect a touch of scaremongering here. I wonder what the colour of the sky is, in Mr Angry’s world if he thinks Camposol being a dog free zone would miraculously enable all to sell and house prices to climb. He’s being disingenuous to imply that the dogs are the problem for the houses not selling, not Masa’s bad workmanship.

and companionship from their pets. Dogs are naturally inquisitive, territorial and protective which is why they bark. Not forgetting the spate of burglaries that break out now and again, dogs offer a modicum of security to many and perhaps a deterrence to a few. The draconian measure you advocate such as the electronic anti-bark device is cruel and unnecessary. I do wonder what type of country you really want to live in with your dictatorship mentality of a total ban on dogs or if everyone toes your line then you’ll allow one dog per household. How benevolent of you.

I have great sympathy for your particular circumstances. Some months ago I was a neighbour to a cancer sufferer who was burdened for several weeks before he died with the incessant barking of a nearby dog the owner of which insisted that his dog was essential to his well-being as a guard-dog. He had no sympathy for the well-being of his dying neighbour. This does seem to typify many of the dog owners who take up residence on Camposol. Their selfishness and disregard for their neighbours is boundless. I recently stopped going to one of the cafes on B Commercial because dog owners had congregated and appeared to find the incessant barking normal and amusing. I have lived on Camposol for more than ten years and have put notices on my property asking for dog-owners to be considerate in the manner in which they allow their animals

to perform their natural functions, and to clean up where necessary, but it really is a question of eternal vigilance to ensure their compliance. I can only wish you well with your campaign.

In the final moments of the Spanish Civil War, fifty prominent Nationalist prisoners are executed by firing squad. Among them is the writer and fascist Rafael Sanchez Mazas. As the guns fire, he escapes into the forest, and can hear a search party and their dogs hunting him down. The branches move and he finds himself looking into the eyes of a militiaman, and faces death for the second time that day. But the unknown soldier simply turns and walks away. Sanchez Mazas becomes a national hero and the soldier disappears into history. As Cercas sifts the evidence to establish what happened, he realises that the true hero may not be Sanchez Mazas at all, but the soldier who chose not to shoot him. Who was he? Why did he spare him? And might he still be alive?

the event, and the little notebook attempts to give details and validity of the story of Sánchez Mazas, his firing squad escape and battle for survival. Most Civil War tales tend to be told from the Republican point of view, but the author chose to see it from the Nationalist point of view instead, and makes no assumptions. Never is Sánchez Mazas considered a hero in the book, and neither are opposing soldiers during a time when Spain changed forever. It shows how each individual was their own man, fighting through the turmoil that erupted around them. A moment of a shared gaze between a fleeing fascist and a Republican, who chose not to pull the trigger is the centre, along with the certainty that men are men, never heroes in war. Rafael Sánchez Mazas seems to be someone not spoken of often, which seems unusual. A founding member of the Falange, he escaped the fate of his collaborator Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera. After spending his pre-war years setting up Falange newspapers and various other publications, and years as a prisoner, he went onto be a minister in Franco’s government, and his sons and grandsons now are also writers. Soldiers of Salamis was translated into English in 2003 and made into a movie in Spain, Soldados de Salamina, the same year. The book was a best-seller in Spain, and I am ashamed to admit it has taken me this long to read the book. It is rare to read a Civil War book which such a lack of prejudice. Soldiers of Salamis was first released in Spanish in 2001, just one year after the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory was founded, set on carrying out the task of excavating bodies left hidden after the Spanish Civil War. The author took on the subject of the war in a time when he felt many of his generation were not talking on the subject, and the 2007 Historical Memory Law, giving the task of digging up the past a mainstream light, was still far away. In a time when some voices were still just starting to be heard gain, this book clearly points out that history is merely the opinion of

who tells the story, and a hero and villain can be hard to identify when faced with individual tales. The book is put into three parts. The first tells the story of a journalist, given the same name as the author, who decides to find more about the story of founding fascist Rafael Sánchez Mazas. After an interview with the son of Sánchez Mazas, he writes an article on the man, but decides to find out more. He goes on to find the revealing tale of the night Sánchez Mazas is to be executed in the forest, and the Republican soldier who hunts for him amongst the trees and finds in him cowering the dark, and yet turns away and lets him live. Sánchez Mazas goes on to struggle to survive in the hills outside Girona, and after being taken in by a generous family, he meets three Republican men, who know that they are about to be the losers of the war. Despite their differences (Sánchez Mazas is the highest living member of the fascist party in Spain) they become friends in a brief yet solidifying time in 1939. The tale is written as if the author is retelling what he has heard, giving it a personal approach. The second part tells the story of Sánchez Mazas, biography style, of an upper class man who shows great talent for writing, but cares little for publishing his poetry. Married to an Italian, he sees value in Italy’s fascism policies and seeks to recreate such ideals in his home nation. After hiding in the Chilean embassy for the first year of the war, he is then taken prisoner on the ship Uruguay until the end of the war, when he is taken to the countryside to be killed by firing squad. There his miraculous escape occurs. The third book is more fiction, where the journalist Cercas is determined to seek out the Republican solider who let Sánchez Mazas go free. Cercas meets Miralles, a former French Foreign Legion with a history of brave Civil War tales. Miralles never confirms that he indeed was the soldier who chose to set Sánchez Mazes free, despite the journalist being convinced he has found the right man. Throughout the book, Sánchez Maza’s little green notebook is mentioned, written as he struggles through the forest with his unlikely friends, who

Luxury Balloon Could Take Space Tourists 100,000 Feet Up

page 26

Someday soon, it might well be possible to buy a ticket to the Earth’s upper atmosphere. The space tourism industry is set to take off: Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipOne launches next year, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX program is ramping up funding. World View, a lesser known effort, is another potential ticket to the heavens. It’s an audacious bid to take travelers on five-hour tours to near space, all inside a luxury flight capsule hoisted by a giant balloon. World View was born out of Paragon Space Development Corporation, an Arizonabased company that specializes in life support infrastructure for extreme environments. In terms of transportation design, space tourism is a new frontier, so when Paragon approached

www.thejournalspain.es

British studio Priestmangoode about designing the capsule, the firm essentially had carte blanche. And Priestmangoode knows luxury travel: it’s outfitted Thai Airways, Malaysia Airways, and Virgin with new first class cabins, and created concepts for a high speed rail. The challenges involved in space tourism are myriad. It’s an industry famous for overpromising. Like its competitors, Paragon still has a raft of thorny issues to sort out: things like permits and launch sites, not to mention the technical aspects of building a feasible, safe balloon that can, you know, float up to space. But the endeavor also demands new thinking about the experience itself. After all, luxury travel is typically about getting people from point A to point B as quickly and as comfortably as possible. According to Nigel Goode, director of Priestmangoode, that’s not necessarily true when your destination is near space. “You’re going 100,000 feet above the earth’s surface,” he says. “You’re seeing the curvature of earth, the blackness of space. It’s such a life-changing experience. This is what it’s all about.” In other words, it’s a thing to be savored. As Goode sees it, the World View trips would begin before dusk. The large balloon that powers the capsule might need about an hour and half to get to 100,000 feet; after that, World View could drift into orbit for a few hours. The view that would afford is its own special kind of luxury, so Goode and his team designed the pod around four circular windows, each of which would allow two of the six passengers (and the two crew members) a front row seat. Plans for the interiors are still in the idea phase, but Goode says they’ll also be designed with luxury top of the mind. Like aircraft interiors, World View’s seats need to be as lightweight as possible—even a few pounds can add up to thousands in fuel costs—so carbon fiber and ultra thin leather padding are materials candidates. The similarities might stop there: With air travel, designers are trying to make passengers forget that they’re in a metal tube. With World View, Goode doesn’t want them to forget it. “It’s got to look as though you’re traveling to space,” he says. “Every element is so the passenger feels like one of the chosen few, sitting

2014

in an environment that won’t be familiar for them.” (That said, they’d like to dispel of any cheesy futurism: “Obviously if you ask people what they expect it to be, it’s like something from 2001: A Space Odyssey,” Goode says.) There will be a bar, a snack area, and a bathroom. Pairs of seats will face the four windows, but six will need to swivel: Goode wants everyone to face the direction of travel during take off and landing. As much as Goode wants to create the right design language for a new kind of luxury, he also needs to design for repetition: Paragon hopes to launch several World Views, each available for both tourism and professional research. But there’s the space tourism industry getting ahead of itself again. Sure, they might have settled on an idea of what near space travel should feel like, in terms of the seats and sight lines. The real challenge, as ever, is making it a reality.

Bike Saddle Plane Seats In Development

You’ll notice from the drawing below that the new-style seat is, to put it mildly, spartan. In fact, I bet your rump’s aching just looking at it. With little legroom, no headrest, no tray, and certainly no video screen, airlines will presumably have to price their tickets pretty darn low in order to persuade passengers to part with their cash. Airbus, in its filing, is perfectly up front about the design, saying, “This increase in the number of seats is achieved to the detriment of the comfort of the passengers.” But it adds, “However, this reduced comfort remains tolerable for the passengers in as much as the flight lasts only one or a few hours.” One or a few hours?! That’s a perineal injury right there waiting to happen. Only an idea? Nope Of course, the fact that Airbus has filed a patent for the design doesn’t mean we’re about to see such seats packed into passenger planes. As Airbus’s Mary Anne Greczyn explained, “Many, if not most, of these concepts will never be developed, but in case the future of commercial aviation makes one of our patents relevant, our work is protected.”

Projection Watches Become A Reality

Low-cost airlines will be giddy with delight when they see what Airbus is planning for them – though passengers might not be so happy. According to a recent patent application, the plane maker is looking to create a new kind of seat that resembles, of all things, a bicycle saddle. Filed last month, the design came to light this week and reveals how the plane maker is considering cramming even more seats into the cabin, giving airlines operating short routes the chance to boost capacity and, in turn, profits. If anyone flies with them, that is.

Have you ever wondered how great it would be to make better use of all that blank, unproductive space on the back of your hand? Apparently four inventors in San Jose, California,

have thought about that very question. The Ritot is touting itself as the world’s first “projection watch.” More specifically, it’s a bracelet that looks sort of like a Fitbit Flex and uses a pico projector to display the time and various smartphone notifications on the back of your hand. The functionality is straightforward: Tap the Ritot or shake your hand and see the current time displayed on your hand for 10 seconds. Sync it with your smartphone and you can see a variety of notifications on the back of your hand – a caller’s name, text messages, reminders, social media alerts, weather alerts and emails, among others. The Ritot can also be set to vibrate when notifications are received or when an alarm goes off. A base pad is included with the Ritot. It acts as a wireless charger and an interface you can use to customize the colour of the watch’s projections. The base can also act as an alarm clock. The Ritot comes in two flavours: bracelet and sport. The bracelet version has a leather surface and is available in white, black and completely black. The sport version uses plastic and rubber and comes in black or white. Smartwatches are all the rage right now, and it seems that the only way the Ritot will truly be able to compete in the long run is if future builds enable users to interact with projections, essentially turning a human hand into a touchscreen.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Just as I sat down thinking ‘All straight again.’ following the unpacking, cleaning, re-establishment of the garden furniture and social life, and with the World Cup under way, my far flung friend from the other side of the world arrived, not unexpectedly, albeit a day early, just as Spain are about to kick off their exit match. It wasn’t just the football team who were making an exit, ‘Dorothy’ needed to empty her apartment here post haste, and it is with her agreement I recount this tale, so gather around the fire, folks. Over a decade ago, when Murcia was ‘the next big thing’ ‘Dorothy’ was tempted into the purchase of a penthouse apartment at a prime location overlooking the golf course at one of the many Polaris World resorts springing up. We were just becoming friends so discovering we’d bought in the same area was a boon, and she’d pop over and we’d go together and look at furniture, and the progress of the building (she was still living in Wales then) and around that time I’d become friends with yet another Welshwoman here, who’d also bought to rent on a similar enterprise. Both these developments were near to San Javier airport, which was hopefully going to haul in golfers. ‘Dorothy’ had bought big, as in expensive, despite just two bedrooms. She was full of hope of happy rentals, a nest egg and place to keep a base in Europe in case the antipodean dream became a nightmare. The Wicked Witch of the West

appeared in the form of recession, and it was on ‘Dorothy’s’ advice that my other friend decided to back out, invoking the get out clause pointed out to her by an astute ‘Dorothy,’ also now having second thoughts. Welsh friend breathed a sigh of relief, grateful to ‘Dorothy’ as she happily danced away along the yellow brick road, but by this point, with ‘Dorothy’ just beginning a new life down under, her own long distance ‘get out’ negotiations fell apart, and she grudgingly completed and took possession, filling it with quality items to attract golfing renters. Prices fell, visitors never materialised, it lolled there, like the straw man, having a lengthy siesta. So I morphed into the Good witch of the South, flying 35 miles each way, filling and emptying cars, and Facebook with items for sale, assisting in the traumatic process, passing many Polaris World bank repossession boards along the way. Will I see ‘Dorothy’ in Murcia again? Who knows? Spain wasn’t relinquishing its hold easily. Departure day, aka French air traffic control day, she drove away sadly waving farewell at 7am. At 10am I was reading a ‘book me another flight, this one’s been cancelled!’ text. That midnight flight too, was cancelled. She left Spanish soil thirty hours later, destination Wales, her aunt’s unexpected funeral and another flight ahead to get her back to ‘Oz’. It had been a week’s Tornado of flying furniture. ‘Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.’

As I rush out of the door I realise I’ve forgot to put my belt on. I’m taking Ben to the local Fiesta for the annual dog show and as usual he’s leaping about and can’t wait to get going. We are running late and I’ve only got 10 minutes to get there. Luckily it’s only 5 minutes drive away. They are probably running late anyway! We are there in time and I am queuing up to register. There are a lot of spectators already and contestants of all shapes and sizes, being walked round all in perfect unison with there owners. The Westies, tails up and on high alert. The Labs & Retrievers bowling along with the same expressions of I’ve seen it all before looks. The poodles and Bison Fries light and dainty on their feet, their legs having to move twice as fast as the other dogs, and the Heinz 57’s so eager to please and looking up expectantly at their walkers as they all trot around the arena.

There are 5 categories so I enter Ben, my 30kilo’s of solid muscle, liver and white Spanish Pointer with not an ounce of brain matter and absolutely no social graces, into all 5 categories. As I do so he cocks his leg up the loud speaker to mark his territory, we haven’t even got into the ring yet. No social graces. !! I scold him, but he looks so pleased with himself he’s almost smiling. We are told to slip in behind the little brown and white bitch! Mistake, he is straining at the leach to get up behind her to sniff her rear, with me trying to hold him back and my unbelted shorts up!! Which I can tell you is no mean feat. Gradually various dogs are pulled in with three places awarded in each category. Best large dog went to the sleek Golden Retriever. Best small dog went to the little white poodle with the pink bow. The most waggyist tail went to the little black and white dog, whose tail in all fairness did not stop wagging for one second. Then the little brown and white bitch was pulled in and I was taken off guard as Ben shot forward in hot pursuit with me desperately trying to hold up my shorts and almost failing miserably. I could hear laughter coming from all around the arena. Dying with embarrassment I returned to the circulating remaining contestants. We were behind a tail in the air on high alert West Highland terrier this time a male but I think my dog must be gay as this fact did not deter him from trying to get to his rear end. CAMPOSOL AND DISTRICT INDEPENDENCE PARTY STATEMENT OF INTENT

The CDiP was formed as a response to the perceived need for independent representation by the residents of Camposol and The Country Club on Mazarron Council. Whilst Camposol and the Country Club have been amongst the largest wealth contributors (30 to 50 million Euros) to the prosperity of Mazarron, neither urbanization has received fair treatment or a reasonable share of funding available from the Town Council. We believe that the Council has clearly failed in its duty of care. We have, therefore, decided to seek representation on Mazarron Council by electing councilors, dedicated to achieving a proper distribution of council wealth. We believe that given adequate organisation we should be able to return up to five elected representatives. On achieving electoral representation, our representatives will seek the following measures.

PROGRAMME 1) a) Ensure an adequate programme of completion to all Camposol and Country Club infrastructure, left incomplete by the developers, Masa. b) Implement an immediate programme to complete street lighting. c) Ensure that inadequate sewage and other utilities are brought up to satisfactory standards immediately. d) Regularise all outstanding anomalies in planning to ensure all properties, constructed by Masa, have proper legal status. e) Ensure a four year programme for the completion of all road surfaces within the Urbanizations. f) Ensure the Town Council institutes legal proceedings against Masa, to ensure that each property is issued with an Escritura. Together with a Certificate of First Occupation Turistico g) Ensure that all properties have a Certificate of Habitation and a Fin de Obras document. h) Take action in Council to ensure that the presently Council nominated ‘Pedania El Saladillo’ is elected by Camposol residents. I) Seek to provide a Free Translation Service in the Health Center, 2) Provide facilities on both urbanizations to ensure easy communication with council representatives by residents. Viz:a) Institute an office manned five days a week for residential guidance. b) Ensure the provision by the Council of an onsite Polling Station for all elections. c) Provide easy accessibility for residents to dispose of garden waste. d) Provide a comprehensive document, available to all residents, informing them of the legal responsibility of the Council and identifying legal responsibilities of residents. 3) Many individuals have invested their own money in providing commercial facilities (Bars, shops, construction companies and estate agencies etc.) on Camposol and in The Country Club. The CDiP will seek to organise a Business Association to represent this business community and ensure fair trading conditions. This programme will end the period when Camposol and the Country Club have been regarded simply as a provider of cash to an uninterested Town Council and will ensure fair treatment for all of our residents.

If you wish to join the CDiP or actively take part in organizing support please leave your name and address and telephone number on our e-mail address: cdipmazarron@yahoo.co.uk One of our agents will contact you shortly. If you are a member of the CRA please ensure you attend the EGM on the 16th August and vote for Proposal 3, this proposal is critical to the future of the CDiP Look out for next month’s advertisement; we will be taking you through the necessary steps to register on the Padron and onto the electoral role. N.B. The CDiP is a Spanish Political Party, legally registered in Madrid and is empowered to seek council office through the electorate under Spanish law.

Proper Maintenance Extends Life!

Health &Wellbeing our English patient cite arthritis as one of the main reasons for moving to a warmer climate. So is there help for those that suffer from arthritis? The short answer to this is YES! Before we go into a more detailed explanation on how, it is important to understand some basic concepts relating to arthritis. Osteoarthritis can also be described as wear and tear on the joints of the human body. As a normal aging process small signs of wear and tear can be expected throughout all joints, as we get older.

Has anyone ever heard ‘Your pain is down to arthritis and you will have to learn to live with it.’ As a chiropractor this is something that I hear daily. In fact many of

So why would one area of the body display more advanced signs of wear and tear or experience more arthritic pain than another? To answer this I will use an analogy that we commonly use with our patients. Imagine you put 4 new car tires on you car, however one of you tires is misaligned. Now lets say you drive the next 5000 km with that misaligned tire. Would it be reasonable to think that the 3 aligned tires would have worn down at a normal rate? So what about the misaligned tire? This WILL have worn down at an increased rate!

Sponsored by Camposol Farmacia

So how does this relate to the joints of the human body? Or more importantly the spine? Lets say with years of bad posture or a car accident the head and the neck become misaligned. You now have the weight of the head (about that of a bowling ball) sitting too far forwards, in relation to the mid-back. Over the following months and years that additional stress on the joints of the neck WILL cause them to wear down at an increased rate = arthritis. So what can be done to help me? Whilst the presence of arthritis cannot be reversed once it has occurred it does make sense to remove the underlying cause. If we continue with the example above and we were to find a patient with a painful arthritic joints in the neck. If that painful arthritic joint had to endure the additional stress of the head in a forward position it is likely to lead to MORE pain and FUTHER arthritis. As structural chiropractors it is our job to return the spine back to a normal position, in this case return the head back over the top of the shoulders. By doing so we are able to reduce the strain on arthritic joints and slow down the process of the advancing arthritis. When this is achieved it nearly always provides great long-term relief for arthritis sufferers. Whilst above we have used the neck as an example the same principles can be applied to those who suffer with mid-back, low-back or hip arthritis. If you suffer from arthritis and are seeking a solution or would simply like to know more information please contact me at drlawrenceking@gmail.com or call the number on our advert to book an appointment.

Sleep disturbance or insomnia takes many forms and refers to the disruption of normal sleep patterns. In some people, it may be difficulty in falling asleep. In others it may be waking during the night, waking too early or waking feeling not refreshed after a night’s sleep. Normal sleep is difficult to define as sleep needs can vary from person to person and can vary according to age. For example, the average amount of sleep a newborn baby needs is 16-20 hours each day, an adult needs about 7-8 hours, while someone in their 80s may require as little as 5 hours per day. Sleep is essential to health. It keeps the immune system strong, helps the brain work efficiently and gives the body a chance to repair itself. Serious health problems can result if a person is deprived of sleep. Causes. Physical causes include things such as pain, discomfort, noise, light, changes in working and social patterns or changes in sleeping environment that are sufficiently irritating or different to prevent the person falling asleep or to cause the person wake after falling asleep. Psychological causes include stress, anxiety, worry, fear or bereavement. These causes tend to keep the brain in an active state, prevent relaxation and so keep the person awake or disturb the quality of sleep. Certain medicines and stimulants may also cause sleep disturbances. Caffeine present in tea, coffee and cola, medicines used as appetite suppressants or decongestants all keep the brain and body in a state of arousal and hinder sleep. Withdrawal of medicines used initially to help sleep, may result in what is called rebound insomnia and, for this reason such medicines should not be used for long periods. Treatment. Short-term or transient sleep disturbances may be treated with over-the-counter remedies such as doxilamina, difenhidramina

Sports Flaming June……………………… On Tuesday 17th June members travelled to the Altorreal golf course, where they must have a great watering system, as the fairways and greens were in tip top condition. So much different to many of the local courses where water has all but disappeared. The course at Altorreal is a good test for members with varying handicaps, as the scores produced showed in the end. After several recounts of Norrie’s card it was declared that he had unfortunately not made it into the top three spots. – better luck next time.!! The scores came in and for a long time it looked like Gerry Taylor with a score of 35 would hold the top spot, but only

If Paul had not put 3 balls into water, and one lost in the woods, on his way round, who knows what his score could have been. In third place was Jeff Perry on 33. Nigel Chadderton was nearest the pin. We have now had different winner at each game since Christmas, and some credit for this must go to the handicap secretary for his tireless work, and his ability to ignore harsh words from members with reducing handicaps. On Friday 27th June, over 70 members, and guests attended the annual BBQ at the Clubhouse on Camposol.

Tickets are already selling well for the annual Los Amigos “President’s Bash” which this year will be held at Mariano’s on Tuesday 7th October. Following the success of the evenings with The Liverpool Band and Soul Power in the last two years, we have again lined up a fabulous evening for October. This year we have a “Legends Past and Present Evening” with two great individual tribute acts, one to the past legend John Lennon and the other to the present legend Gary Barlow.

The months of June and July are normally quiet for football followers but this summer we have been able to follow the 2014 World Cup from Brazil. Although both England (unsurprisingly) and Spain (surprisingly) were among the first countries to return home the quality of football played and the number of goals scored during the tournament managed to keep us well entertained. Behind the scenes both Los Amigos de Mazarron FC and Mazarron Football Club have been busy planning for the 2014/15 season. After a hectic social year with Los Amigos there will be no let up in the forthcoming year. The Executive Committee are considering many more exciting events for members and friends to enjoy including the possibility of a boat trip from the Port of Mazarron followed by lunch, a visit to Golf Deluxe Adventure Golf in Los Alcazares and another GoKarting Grand Prix at the excellent circuit in Puerto de Mazarron. The monthly Luncheon Club continues to go from strength to strength. 43 members and friends enjoyed a fabulous afternoon at the Restaurante Castillo Del Pinar in Perin on 24th June. Five delicious Spanish dishes were followed by a more English dish of hot chicken and

Mazarron FC have always been extremely busy preparing for the 2014-

It had been hoped that the new artificial surface which is to be laid at the Estadio Municipal would be in place ready for the new season. The original tendering process was completed and the order for the new pitches at Bala Azul and Mazarron FC was placed. Unfortunately, due to a technicality the tendering process had to be revisited and new tenders were called for.

Amigos and Mazarron Football Club. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC weekly meetings resume on Thursday 7th August after the summer break. Social meetings, which are open to anyone, members or not, are held every Thursday at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. The membership year starts on 1st August for 2014/15 and membership has again been held at 10€. All existing members should have received a renewal form by email and membership forms will be available at the Social Meetings during August and by sending an email to the Los Amigos Secretary, Barbara Marchant, at pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk If you are interested in football, or just want to take part in the various social events we will be organising or just want a chat and a drink among friends in pleasant surroundings why not join us for an hour on a Thursday afternoon? You will be most welcome.

This has been concluded and the order for the work has again been placed but obviously there will now be a delay. So Mazarron FC will continue to play on grass until work can commence, hopefully in late 2014. investors, with those putting in around £200,000 securing an estimated 50 days of driving a year, according to parent company Dow Schofield Watts. The minimum fund buy-in is £50,000. “The nature of the vehicles means they need to exercised, so rather than buying them and have them sitting around, we’re doing this as a way to give something back in lieu of dividends,” The cars will be garaged in the north west of England by auction house H&H Classics, which will also advise the fund on the best cars to buy. However investors will be able to ship them to blue-riband events such as the Mille Miglia Italian classic road race and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The exposure at those events will also help to increase the value of the cars, according to Benson “It works all round really,” he said. The company wouldn’t predict what return investors might make on their stake in the fund. “The issue with this against other private equity funds is that the classic market is extremely opaque,” Benson said. “But if you look at historic returns, they are

very strong, especially at the top end.” According to the Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI), which tracks auctions and other car sales, prices of high-end classic cars increased by 47 per cent in 2013. The fund is aiming to buy cars with a racing history and a well-known badge. “The key to the growth is around Ferraris and those type of marques. Provenance is very important,” Benson said. James Knight, group motoring director for auctioneers Bonhams, sounded a note of caution: “Over the years we’ve occasionally seen these funds try to get off the ground when the market’s been doing well for a number of years but they’ve had marginal success. I think ultimately people prefer to own something 100 percent,” he said. However the classic market is still looking strong, Knight said: “We’re set for fair weather. How long that will continue I don’t know, but there’s no cloud on the horizon at the moment.” Marques doing well are Maserati, Ferrari, Jaguar and Aston Martin, he said.

All Bank Account Deposits to Be Taxed in Spain The Government announced at the end of last week that it would be introducing a blanket tax on all bank account deposits in Spain. Property, Financial and Legal fix their own rates, which was the case in some regions including Andalucía, the Canary Islands and Extremadura. The Government fixed the tax rate at 0% but, at the same time, did not rule out the option of raising it in the future, which it is now about to do. The other motive behind the Government’s decision, which was revealed by Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaría, at a press conference last week, is to bring in much-needed revenue for the country’s cash-strapped regional governments and their coffers. It has been estimated that this new regulation could generate around 400 million euro from deposits worth 1.4 trillion euro. This move is aimed at appeasing regional governments after they were informed of

the stringent deficit limits in place for 2014 and 2015. The EU has demanded that Spain’s deficit at the end of this year is reduced to 5.5% of GDP. The target for 2013 was 6.5% and Spain fell short by just 0.1%. The Government is thinking of new and inventive ways in which to tax the nation, trying to focus on indirect taxes rather than direct ones such as personal income or VAT. Spain is one of the countries within

the EU that generates the least amount of revenue from taxation, despite the fact that taxes and levies are being raised all the time.

We value your support always, without it we would cease to exist, and some animals would be in a far worse situation. But our hard work in pursuit of a happy ending never ends until we have homed all the animals in our care. So onwards and upwards, no rest for us then! Most of the Animal Charities are really struggling at the moment as they are full to bursting with unwanted, abandoned and stray animals, mostly dogs and puppies. And we, even though predominantly an Equine Charity, are no different. The majority of these animals come to us with problems, injuries and illnesses, and issues that can’t be seen by the human eye, but they are there nevertheless. We have the job of helping them back to health and trying to mend their spirits and get them to trust again. All this can take a lot of time, patience and in cases where veterinary help is needed, a lot of money. It’s always very sad to find another animal that has been dumped, abused or neglected, and of course it isn’t always the local people who do it, but Brits as well who return to the UK and are unable or unwilling to take their pets with them. I’m sorry, but it makes me so mad! These animals are your responsibility! If have chosen to take a pet into your life and care for and love it and treat it as one of your family, why would you want to leave it behind?? I know there are always some exceptions to the rule preventing this, like ill health or finances, but sometimes there are ways round this. I understand, but don’t condone, that some of the local people allow their pets to wander the streets and do not favour neutering, and this is the cause of a lot of unwanted litters as people are struggling financially and cannot afford extra mouths to feed, but there is help available for those who want it with vet bills etc so there should be no excuse! The Animal Charities are left picking up the pieces of their broken lives, and with the help of our supporters, the animal lovers, we try to piece them back together and try and find them somewhere safe to lay their heads and be loved in a new home of their own. Of course this cannot be achieved for all of the animals we have, some fall by the wayside, because they are too ill or too badly injured, which is heartbreaking. Sadly, we have lost two of our rescued pups this last month, Harry and Lana, but most months there are casualties. I can’t tell you how many tears are shed, and a little bit of me goes with them each time one passes away….. But amongst all the sadness there are happy stories, successful stories, which continue to make all the hard work worthwhile. We are always looking for loving homes for our rescued Animals, and here are a few that are worth considering if you’re looking for that special companion: Toffee and Treacle, abandoned sisters, aged approx 4mths, Dobbi and Teddy, two of the three crate puppies who were handed into the shop last month (all who had contracted parvo virus and sadly, we lost Harry). Then we have some long termers, Domino, Kira, Toc, and Tetley, who have been overlooked through no fault of their own, all loving, nice natured Dogs, well deserving of a home and a family of their own.

A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the England Football team, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn’t find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, ‘Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place, I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!’ Miraculously, a parking place

the horses?”

Paddy looked up again and said, ‘Never mind, I found one.’

The guy says, “That sounds like a good idea, I think I’ll try it.”

Martin Sallu plastics The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing £1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money. Many people had tried .... over time: weightlifters, dockers, etc., but nobody could do it. One day, this scrawny little fellow came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a small voice, “I’d like to try the bet.” After the laughter had died down, the bartender said, “OK”; grabbed the lemon; and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little fellow. But the crowd’s laughter turned to total silence .... as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon .... and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the £1000, and asked the little man: “What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or what?” The little fellow quietly replied: “I work for the Inland Revenue.”

Martin Sallu plastics A guy walks into a bar looking frustrated. The bartender asks, “What’s the matter?”

A few months later, he returns to the bar in worse condition. “I shaved the tail of one of the horses, but it grew back and I can’t tell them apart again!” The bartender says, “Why don’t you try shaving the mane?” A few months later the guy is back. “I shaved the mane of one of the horses, but it grew back!” The bartender yells, “Just measure the damn horses. Perhaps one is slightly taller that the other one!” The guy storms out of the bar. The next day, the guy runs into the bar. “It worked, it worked!” he exclaims. “I measured the horses, and the black one is two inches taller than the white one!” A nun, a priest, an Irishman, a Scotsman, a rabbi and a blonde walk into a bar. The bartender looks at them and asks, “Is this some kind of joke?”

A: 43.

After 6 all numbers divisible by 3 can be ordered (because they can all be expressed as a sum of 6’s and 9’s). After 26, all numbers divisible by three when subtracted by 20 can be obtained. After 46, all numbers divisible by three when subtracted by 40 can be obtained. After 46, all numbers fit into one of these 3 categories, so all numbers can be obtained. 43 is the last number that doesn’t fall into one of these categories (44 = 20 + 6 * 4, 45 = 6 * 6 + 9). Answer: 833 apples.

The guy replies, “Well I’ve got these two horses and I can’t tell them apart. I don’t know if I’m mixing up riding times or even feeding them the right foods.”

Step one: First you want to make 3 trips of 1,000 apples 333 miles. You will be left with 2,001 apples and 667 miles to go. Step two: Next you want to take 2 trips of 1,000 apples 500 miles. You will be left with 1,000 apples and 167 miles to go (you have to leave an apple behind). Step three: Finally, you travel the last 167 miles with one load of 1,000 apples and are left with 833 apples in Bananaville.

The bartender suggests, “Why don’t you try shaving the tail of one of
