Welcome to the August 2015 edition of The Journal! There is so much going on in this month’s magazine that I don’t even know where to begin! Ok, let’s start by talking about the elephant in the room. The weather. Is it really possible for anywhere on Planet Earth to be so hot, even in the middle of the night? Apparently so! As record temperatures and yellow weather alerts are sweeping most of Southern Spain, we ask you to remember to take care in the heat. Keep an eye on friends and neighbours, and stay out of the mid-day sun! Now that the public service announcement is out the way, let’s move on to some exciting and fun stuff! Last month we mentioned that the Camposol Fiesta was making a return after a 2 year hiatus. The 2015 Fiesta will be held from the 28th to the 30th of August and it promises to be the Weekend of Year! It’s going to be 3 days of great family fun, and festivities and we are expecting visitors from all over the region. You can read all about it later in the magazine, but all we can say is that it took a lot of people a lot of work to organise it, so go there, enjoy it, and show your support for this great community event. This month we would like to extend a welcome to a long-time friend of The Journal, The gazpacho-mOnk. The mOnk has a great blog over at www.speakingofspain. com, and we are delighted to feature him in our magazine. Also not to be overlooked is an article by Dr Peter Pitt of the CDIP. In the wake of the recent election, Peter takes a look at what could be in store for the future for urbanisation and residents of Camposol. It’s an interesting and thought provoking article that we are sure will cause some healthy debate. If you would like to put your own point of view across on this matter, or on any topic featured in The Journal, then please don’t hesitate to email us. I’m going to sign off with a wee quote from G.K Chesterton that I was reminded of the other day after eavesdropping accidentally overhearing a conversation in a restaurant. “The Bible tells us to love our neighbours, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.” Enjoy this month’s magazine. Be Cool, Robert Rutherford P.S: Ladies don’t forget to check out the SPECIAL OFFERS from Janes Salon on P42!

Sale of Aircon Units Triples in First Week of July The extreme heat and high temperatures experienced across the whole of Spain in July has resulted in sales of airconditioning units going through the roof. During the first week of July, sales of this type of equipment increased by a whopping 80% on the same period in 2014, tripling the volume of businesses in this sector. Business owners have explained that once their air-con products have sold out it will be extremely difficult to replace them this summer as manufacturers have also warned that they have run out of stock due to not counting on such demand or such hot weather. If you are unable to cope with the heat any longer and have been considering installing an air-con unit or even just buying a portable apparatus, it is advised not to wait much longer just in case the shelves are empty once you have finally decided. Whether it’s too hot or even too cold, Spain’s electricity companies must be rubbing their hands with glee at the money that they are making. In July the record for the demand of electricity in Spain was broken a record four times. Bars and restaurants also reported a boom in business as people took to the terraces to quench their thirst with many people eating out as they reported it too hot to cook at home.
Spain’s â‚Ź1bn Ciudad Real Airport Sells for Just â‚Ź10,000 A Chinese company has bought Spain’s infamous “ghost airportâ€? of Ciudad Real for the bargain basement price of â‚Ź10,000. The airport cost an estimated 1 billion when it opened in late 2008 but was closed three years later when its parent company fell into financial difficulties. It was designed to receive 2.5million passengers a year but only managed a measly 31,000 at its peak in 2010. Now Chinese consortium Tzaneen Internacional has just got the bargain of the century after snapping up the white elephant some 200km south of Madrid for just â‚Ź10,000. The deal includes the runways, air traffic control tower and hangars, but does not include the terminal building or car parking facilities. The sale took place at a public auction, which took place in the Provisional Court of Ciudad Real, where Tzaneen International was the only company to put in a bid for the airport.
page 4
The company will now play a waiting game, as during the next 20 days other companies may put in a bid for the airport. An enduring symbol of Spain’s economic crisis and the many “white elephantâ€? building projects that ensued, the airport shut up shop in September 2012 after just three years in operation and now the courts have ordered its sale to help balance the books. The airport, which has been in bankruptcy proceedings since mid-2010, officially cost â‚Ź450m ($620m), but the bill reaches about â‚Ź1bn when publicly funded infrastructure and running costs so far are included.

Repsol Fined for Price Fixing Spain’s antitrust watchdog, the CNMC has fined Repsol and a number of its franchise companies for price fixing. Various fines totalling 22,800,000â‚Ź we presented to the oil giant for conspiring to keep prices in line in their petrol stations across Spain. The fines were distributed as follows: Repsol 22.6 million euros, Lence Torres and Complejo Cristobal, 113,801â‚Ź. Serivce station Lorqui 28,074â‚Ź and Cerro de la Cabana 148,763â‚Ź Repsol has claimed that it will challenge the ruling at the National High Court as it regards the fine as “unfair, and disproportionateâ€? Investigations into this price-fixing case against Repsol began in 2013 when reports published by the National Competition Commission and the National Energy Commission were published. As a result of the case and hearing, the CNMC has confirmed that Repsol, Lence Torres, Complejo San CristĂłbal, EstaciĂłn de Servicio LorquĂ and Cerro de la CabaĂąa were all in breach of the Competition Protection Act. In other words, that Repsol agreed with the other companies to coordinate and fix their prices at the same time. It was also ruled that there had been an agreement between Repsol and EstaciĂłn de Servicio LorquĂ in Murcia not to apply any discounts over the price of 0.03 cents a litre, and that Repsol and Cerro de la CabaĂąa in Madrid had interchanged information regarding prices.

Spain performs first all-robot transplant in EU
Doctors in Barcelona have successfully conducted Europe’s first transplant completely performed by robotic surgery. A team of urologists from the Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona have successfully overseen a kidney transplant performed completely by robots, the first of its kind in all of Europe. Robotic surgery is a method where surgeons control a robotic arm from a computer, allowing more precision in the procedure and reducing a patient’s recovery time as well as their chances of developing an infection. Cameras allow doctors to see 3D images of the patient’s body as they are performing the surgery. The surgery in Spain was performed last week on a 25-year-old woman named

The technology had previously been used in Italy to perform part of a surgery, but this was the first time in Europe that an entire transplant was conducted with the robotic arm. The medical experts said they hoped the surgery would set a precedent for future operations. “This is a method

Spain bungee jump death
A woman from London has died while bungee jumping on holiday in Spain. Kleyo De Abreu, 23, was killed in Lanjaron, Granada, according to the Guardia Civil.
Her aunt had been watching her take part in the jump from the Tablate Bridge “when the tragedy occurred”, a police spokesman said. Ms De Abreu, an aspiring fashion student from Brixton, has been praised by her family as “sweet and caring”. Confirming the death, the Foreign Office said: “We are liaising with the Spanish authorities and have contacted the family to offer support at this difficult time.” Ms De Abreu had been visiting her aunts and cousins in southern Spain after travelling in Morocco. Her father, Bernard Atwell, said relatives were in shock at the news of her death.

He described her as “sweet, caring, bubbly and focused”. Mr Atwell stressed: “My daughter is gone and nothing is going to bring her back, but I have spoken to the family and we are all on the same page - we don’t want something like this to happen again.” A spokesman for the Guardia Civil said: “Although it is too early to draw any conclusions about the circumstances of the death, one of the lines of inquiry is that there was a miscalculation with the rope.” At the site, there are two bridges. One is a modern bridge from which the bungee jumps are launched, with an ancient Roman bridge underneath. It is believed Ms De Abreu hit the lower bridge, causing fatal injuries, when she jumped from above. The Guardia Civil is trying to ascertain whether or not she had jumped with an adventure sports company. Tablate Bridge has a drop of 80m (262ft)
and is a popular bungee jumping site used by several adventure sports firms. Bungee jumpers fall for about 20m (66ft) and swing underneath the bridge, with a first jump offered for about 35 euros (£25)

The group as a whole shares with us and supports the idea of sustainable responsible Tourism in which respect for Nature and its living beings and where local population benefits from the tourist experience are both objectives of prime importance. In the near future we will be able to enjoy our hacks and ECOtrekkiing through the Barrancos de Gebas at the same time financing a safe and secure haven for our rescue animals. Whilst the majority of our young Spanish pupils and students Swedish family hack head off to the beach for the summer Cavalli Foundation, still based at META Riding stables in La Costera de Alhama, is rapidly becoming a centre of interest amongst riders, friends and followers from the Nordic countries – recent visitors being three families from Sweden holidaying in Bolnuevo. We can now add them to our regulars like The Camposol Triangle is back for 2015

Obviously we are thrilled with this new development but we must say that we are pleased and proud to say that we still receive our loyal British riders young and old, friends who have been coming to us for their holiday riding since our Inauguration in 2007. This month’s most amazing news report is that fence construction is under way at Cavalli Ranch. Finally, after 3 years of patience and perseverance we received the ALL GO from the Department of the Environment – can hardly believe that we have reached the end of the everlasting procedure of paperwork, permits and licenses. Having said that we must add that we are only in stage 1 of the project, stage 2 and 3 still to go. She was given a multivitamin and iron complex to balance her blood levels plus a treatment of baths with hibiscrub followed by body oil massage to sort out her dermatitis. Right now India is looking for a kind godparent to help with her journey to recovery. As you know, from the beginning of summer, our Cavalli family has grown enormously and we’ve taken in assorted animals all needing treatment, care, love and attention. Our cry for help to keep up with feed and vet’s bills has been answered by myriad calls and messages from friends enquiring into how to become Godparents. If you would like

“The gazpacho-m0nk” The summer of discontent: What you need to know about living in Spain… be seen as a terrorist...
It’s never been so easy to
Yes, summer 2015 looks to be a hottie in just about every conceivable way. One hot topic of the moment is the extent to which people in Spain can speak out about injustice or abuse of the law. Given’s Spain’s recent poor record in these areas, you would think the government would be making it easier for us to report such abuses. But no! The opposite is true and as of the 1st July 2015 - these restrictions on what you can and cannot do have become law. How does this affect me, I’m only interested in the beach, filling my pool or the sangria jug? Well, though you may think it doesn’t affect you, it would be wise to at least be aware of how your conduct may be interpreted by the good officers of the state. Read below for a list of some of the new crimes that have been invented by this government and then, pin it to your fridge door so that this summer, you don’t accidentally end up with a heavy fine or being exported as a terrorist for simply visiting a web page, taking a photo of demonstration, or looking blankly at policeman in the course of his duty. 12 Changes in the Law You Need to Know About
post it on your FB timeline! 5: Careful with the royal jokes! Any satirical comment against the royal family is a new crime “against the Crown”. For example, “What did Leticia and the Bishop have to say after they... (SORRY CENSORED) 6: No more hassling elected members of the govt. or local authorities - even if they do say one thing in order to be elected, and then go and do the exact opposite. Confronting them about this hypocritical behaviour - if you see them in the street chatting to that street cleaner , dining at their favourite expensive restaurant, or having their shoes shined by that physics graduate who can’t find a decent job in the country - hassling them about their behaviour is now a criminal offence. 7: Has your local river been so polluted by that plastic factory along the edge that all life has been extinguished. Well, tough! Greenpeace like protests are now finable from 601 - 30.000 euros. 8: Protest in a spontaneous way outside Parliament - for example if Parliament passes a hugely unpopular bill, or are debating something extremely important to you or your community - is now finable from 601 - 30.000 euros. TIP: Use Google Maps to protest “just” round the corner - only don’t tweet the location! 9: Obstruct an officer in the course of their business (evicting someone from their house for example), or “resisting arrest”, refusing to leave a demonstration when told to do so or getting in the way of a swinging baton - are all now finable offences from 601 - 30.000 euros.
1: If you photograph security personal and then share these images on social media: Up to 30.000 euros fine (particularly if photo exposes violence being used against a member of the public). It is possible that this fine may be increased depending on the number of Instagram followers you have.
10. Showing lack of respect to officers of the law is an immediate fine of 100 600 euros (Answering back or asking a disrespectful question, making a funny face, showing your bottom to an officer of the law or telling him/her that their breath reminds you of your dog’s underparts is now, sadly, not advisable)
2: Tweet or Retweet information or the “location of an organised protest” can now be interpreted as an act of terrorism as it incites others to “commit a crime” (now that “demonstrating” in many ways has become a crime). Sounds 1984-ish? Read Orwell and his time in Spain.
11. Occupying or squatting or refusing to leave an office, business, bank or other place until your complaint has been heard as a protest - 100 - 600 euros fine (No more flashmob demo’s).
3: Snowden like Whistle-blowing is now defined as an act of terrorism. If you write for a local rag, careful what you print, who you speak to and whether the budgie is listening. 4: Visit or Consult terrorist web sites - even for investigative purposes - can be interpreted as an act of terrorism. Make sure you use “Tor” browser, reject cookies, don’t allow pop-ups, and don’t

12. Digital protests: Writing something that could technically “disturb the peace” is a now crime: Bloggers beware, for no-one had yet defined whose peace you could be disturbing. Bloggers Beware Of course a lot of this is impossible to enforce (yet), but, nevertheless, should you be out and about and see a commotion in the street - a dog disrespectfully peeing up the tyre of a police patrol car, a lost tourist doing a

The Future Funding of Camposol:Some Thoughts by Dr Peter Pitt, CDIP Now the dust has settled after the recent local elections and Camposol faces the prospect of four years of governance by the PP we need yet again to consider the issues facing our urbanisation. These issues include a lack of street lighting, poor quality roads, illegal builds, collapsing buildings and a lack of documentation for residents- Recanting these is becoming something of a mantra. I am sure over the next four years representatives of Camposol will be having meetings with the Mayor but these meetings will generate nothing but hot air with little tangible result arising- In the final analysis the solution to Camposolers problems comes down to one thing and that is, finance. The urbanisation needs literally millions of euros expended on and within it and the question is, where is this money going to come from? This article will attempt to address this and stimulate debate about the future of Camposol. It seems to me there are only three options to consider in relation to finance and Camposol and they are as follows:A. The return of Masa to complete their contractual obligations to Camposol.
page 22
B. The Council fully adopt Camposol and prepare a long turn funding programme for the urbanisationC. A self-generated funding initiative for Camposol. At this juncture let us consider these options. Option A is a complete non-starter. Due to any form of control exercised by Mazarron town hall. Masa has in my opinion ratted on our urbanisation and has just up and left. This company´s behaviour in my submission has been a complete disgrace and the Spanish authorities should be ashamed of themselves that major companies like Masa are allowed to behave in the manner they do. Option B seems to me to be highly unlikely for a number of reasons. A recent article in the Spanish paper La Voz compared the goings on in a lunatic asylum with that of Mazarron Council. This situation will not change overnight and the incompetence emanating from the Town Hall will continue for the foreseeable future. I for one expect by 2019, the date of the next local election, to continue to see a lack of lighting, poor roads etc etc remaining on Camposol. Furthermore, Mazarron Council does not have the motivation nor the financial clout to solve Camposol’s problems. Due to their idiocy they do not even collect the IBI tax from all properties on Camposol
www.thejournalspain.es
which thereby results in a loss of income to the Town Hall. However, the salient issue is that the local rate base is far too low to generate the sums necessary to bring Camposol up to an acceptable standard. Consider the following as evidence of my point- When I left the UK for Spain in 2007my annual Council Tax then was 1770 pounds per annum. In return I received street lighting, local schools, libraries, leisure centres, local parks and playing fields, road repairs and all the other local services provided by my local government. Although I paid a lot in I actually got a lot out. Compare this with Camposol some eight years later. Here I pay approximately 565 euros a year in IBI tax which is roughly 400 pounds. This is less than a quarter than I was paying in Hounslow some eight years ago! In other words, here I pay little in and get even less out. This is a situation in my submission which will prevail here over the next four years and the infrastructure of Camposol will continue to deteriorate. My for Option C will I know cause a heated ruction but the harsh reality is, if we are to see a Camposol we can be proud of the residents will have to pay for it This will have to be the case because as the Nobel prize winning economist, Milton Friedman, so rightly said, “ There is no such thing as a free lunch.” Although no one likes to pay any increase in tax the majority will do so if they see this is fair and beneficial. To illustrate this point

VVV DROTM@ @CUDMSTQD BNL )MEN DROTM@ @CUDMSTQD BNL After I was elected to the former Greater London Council in 1981 the Committee decided to simplify the fare structure and reduce all fares radically. To cut a long story short the results of this were amazing. After three months LT witnessed a rapid rise in passenger numbers with a consequence of a rise in their revenues. There were real indirect benefits as well, for example, road accidents declined by 14%, road congestion was eased, there was less wear and tear on London roads and air quality was improved. Having said that this policy had to be paid for and was done by raising a supplementary rate on all London households of twenty eight pounds per annum. This was fully accepted by the majority as they could see the clear benefit’s the cheap fares policy was bringing. The same lesson could be applied to our urbanisation and a Camposol Supplementary Rate could be established through the Town Hall for expenditure solely on Camposol itself. It would have to be ring fenced and managed by Camposol elected Councillors. The rate of this local tax would be determined by how quickly the people of the urbanisation wanted their problems solved. This could be done through public consultation exercises such as public meetings, through local newspapers and journals and local radio. Once the issues facing

Feline Lukaemia (FeLV) When you hear the word Lukaemia, people automatically think of cancer and chemotherapy… feline leukaemia is not straight forward and can be complicated to treat – there is no cure. What is FeLV and how is it Spread? – Feline Lukaemia Virus is a very important viral infection of cats occurring worldwide, which may depress the immune system and present with various symptoms. FeLV only causes disease in cats, and was first discovered in 1964. FeLV is an important cause of disease and death in cats. It is easily spread throughout feral colonies via saliva, faeces, nasal secretions, milk, mutual grooming, mating and biting. Pregnant females carrying the virus often give birth to kittens which are still born or “fade” quickly. Young kittens are especially susceptible to FeLV infection. With age, cats become increasingly resistant. In general, less than 1-2% of healthy pet cats are infected with FeLV, however the infection is found more commonly in
sick/outdoor cats, and it is slightly more common in males. The virus can be difficult to treat (depending on the stage when detected and confirmed) and is impossible to cure –any cat with confirmed FELV must be in a home where they stay inside and are not in contact with other, non-infected, cats – indeed they can live a full and healthy life with regular blood testing and continued treatment to help to keep the virus at bay. Clinical signs are extremely diverse but include fever, lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss, and persistent or recurrent respiratory, skin and intestinal problems. Diagnosis of FeLV infection Fortunately, good diagnostic tests are readily available for FeLV. Simple ‘in clinic’ blood tests are used by many vets. These tests detect a protein produced during replication of the FeLV virus which is usually present in the blood of cats persistently infected with the virus. These tests are quick, relatively inexpensive, and generally very reliable. Often the kits simultaneously test for FIV, as many of the clinical signs of FIV infection are similar to FeLV infection. FeLV vaccination has been proven to be successful. Several vaccines are available and these generally appear to provide a valuable level of protection
against infection. Kittens tend to be more susceptible to FeLV infection, and as the environment a kitten will end up in is usually uncertain, there is good rationale in routinely vaccinating all kittens against FeLV (ideally with a booster at a year of age) So please get behind us and help us to make a difference to the welfare of stray/feral cats in the local area. Uncle Paul’s problem page
Dear Paul
I am a man in my late sixties and I now live alone. My health is not very good. I have children from two of my three marriages. I really am not interested in becoming involved in another relationship. I watch television all day and go out for a walk in the afternoon when I pick up some shopping for supper. On Friday, I have supper out. No one ever calls me. I never got very far in my life, and I spend a lot of time thinking about the past and sometimes I just go over and over the many mistakes I have made wishing I had done things differently. What can I do? LW Dear LW Sometimes it is hard to accept the past. You need to focus on the good things, and realize that we all have made choices based on our limited abilities. Sounds like you need to get out and involved in life more. You need to start reaching out because loneliness is painful and can confuse you into thinking that you are a loser, or an outcast. You are reacting by withdrawing into yourself, your thoughts, and your feelings and this is not helpful. At its best, thinking of loneliness might make us reach out and cultivate new friendships, which is the healthiest thing to do if you are unhappy and alone. When you are a child and your sadness causes you to cry, you may evoke a comforting response from others. If you’re an adult, not so much. It is down to you to change, join a group, make an effort and go to a quiz night you will with time make a friend or two. Nourish those friendships with time and attention. Don’t be too cautious about whether you are giving more than you are getting at first. If you make more friends it will be rewarding in the long run. But please it is up to you to get off your backside and put a big effort into changing this situation. Paul Dear Paul I have really never been close to my brother and haven’t spoken to him in many years, although I do send Christmas and birthday cards.
page 28
Anyway, my brother, his wife and two children are coming to visit in the summer and I can’t help but feel terribly uncomfortable. We are supposed to go out with them on the odd day to show them around the area and have the occasional meal. Thankfully, I will have my other family with me, but I don’t have a clue what to say to someone I hardly speak to or know. My brother and I have never really been close even when we were children. Would you give me some pointers on how not to feel quite so uncomfortable with their visit? Thanks in advance for your advice. LM Dear LM These people are connected strangers. They deserve to be treated with politeness, respectfulness, kindness and courtesy. I imagine they will be just as nervous as you are.
Dear BF And they say the youth have no manners. What happened to respecting your elders? Say nothing! Most men love their mothers and you do not want to make him feel piggy in the middle with your griping. What I am not getting to grips with is that you feel so aggrieved with this arrangement. You get to be “Queen Bee/Hyacinth at all other times of the month swanning around in the front seat, yet you can’t put yourself out on these trips. Shame on you! But if you must do something about the seating arrangement, the next time the two of you go to pick up his mother, stay in the car, roll down the window and say, “Hola, stick your old carcass in the back seat, because I want to sit next to your wonderful son on this occasion.” Bon voyage and have a nice trip.
Listen to what they have to say. Avoid all arguments. Smile, nod and be nice. Look for the good and stay light and fun. Ask about them and their lives, as most people love talking about themselves. I think you will find everything will be ok. After all, why would they be coming over if they did not want to see you and be in your company?
Dear Paul
This is not forever, this is just short visit so just relax and have a good time.
DL
Paul
Yes, that’s exactly what it means. It also means your girlfriend is a selfish, lazy coward who cares so little about you and your feelings that she can’t even be bothered with the inconvenience of ending your relationship.
Dear Paul My Spanish husband and I spend one weekend a month with his mother and take her to Madrid to see other family members, taking her shopping, etc. My problem is I always end up sitting in the back seat of the car when we go. It’s not as though we have a small car and it would be just as easy for her to sit in the back seat as it is in the front seat. It has been this way for a couple of years now, and I haven’t said anything to my husband because she is his mother after all. But I feel as his wife I should be honest with my husband and tell him how I feel.
What does “I don’t necessarily want to break up, but we should start seeing other people” mean? Because that’s what my girlfriend of nine months said to me. It sounds to me like “I really want to break up, but I also want to keep you as an emergency booty call.”
Dear DL
The problem is that she’s not lying. She doesn’t necessarily want to break up, which means she might put just enough energy into the relationship to keep you around. So the next question is, how low are your expectations? Do you have the strength to say, “No, our relationship is exclusive? You cannot be with me and also see other people”
Please help. We are about to go on another visit with her again and don’t want to spend it in the backseat for a four-hour drive each way.
If you’re a strong man with selfrespect and the courage of your convictions, then she’s setting you up to be the one who ends things. If you happen to be a weak-willed doormat, that’s fine with her too, because like you said, she can always string you along as an emergency booty call.

Technology Commodore returns as a 5.5-inch, nostalgiapowered smartphone
It hasn’t been a legitimate name in computing for over 20 years, but somehow the Commodore brand always manages to find a way back into our lives. In 2004, it came back as a simple TV-Game joystick. In 2011, Commodore USA sold gaming PCs stuffed into retro-styled keyboard chassis. Today, the brand is back again--as a nostalgia-stamped 5.5-inch Android smartphone. Putting its super-obvious nostalgia-grab aside, the Commodore PET (yes, named after the computer) actually sounds like a pretty decent midrange phone--complete with a 1.7GHz octa-core Mediatek processor, a 13-megapixel rear facing camera with a dedicated shutter button and a hefty, 3000 mAh battery. Nothing too special, but there are a few features baked in for fans of the brand, namely a pair of customized emulators for the Commodore 64 and Amiga games. The phone will be available in Italy, Spain, France, Poland and Germany later this month to the tune of about 270€, which buys 16GB of storage with an included 32GB micro SD card, and a 32GB version will sell for about 40€ more. Of course, there’s another way to get it if you don’t mind missing out on some of that Commodore re-branding: direct from China. The Commodore PET is actually an Orgtec WaPhone with a new logo. The original version of the phone doesn’t come with Commodore and Amiga emulators, but it does cost about

half as much, minus international shipping.
Russia to Manufacture World Cheapest Helicopter
Russian designers are about to fulfil the consumer’s dream of an affordable helicopter, which is expected to cost less than half of the cheapest helicopter currently on the market. Weighing only 270kg, the ultralight, coaxial two-seater is called Afalina, which is the Russian word for bottlenose dolphin, with the rotorcraft’s hull resembling the shape of the marine mammal’s body. Afalina is designed as a multipurpose helicopter capable of performing a variety of tasks, including the training of pilots, maintenance of pipelines and power lines, aerial surveillance, police patrolling, transportation

of personnel, farm work and recreational flights. One of the machine’s key features is the customizable Enigma system, which allows the pilot to pick and choose his cockpit display layout from hundreds of devices and functions. The coaxial positioning of rotors used in Afalina ensures that the aircraft is easier to pilot, very quiet and more resistant to lateral wind gusts. The manufacturer, HeliWhale said that the patented new control system of coaxial rotors also provides the helicopter with high velocity of up to 250 km an hour at max speed. Afalina can also be refuelled with conventional 95 octane car petrol, with the consumption between 12 and 16 litres per hour, making the helicopter extremely economical to fly. According to HeliWhale, the helicopter will cost around 100,000€ which includes heating and ventilation systems in the cockpit. The cheapest alternative would be the American built

First successful drone delivery made in the US The first US governmentapproved drone delivery has successfully transported 4.5kg of medical supplies to a rural health clinic. The drone, made by Australian drone manufacturer Flirtey, took part in the demonstration, which was approved by the Federal Aviation Authority, in partnership

with Nasa. The Flirtey drone made three three-minute flights from Lonesome Pine Airport, Virginia, to the clinic at the Wise County Fairgrounds, carrying 24 medical packages. “Proving that unmanned aircraft can deliver lifesaving medicines is an important step toward a future where unmanned aircraft make routine autonomous deliveries of your everyday purchases,” said Flirtey chief executive Matt Sweeny in a statement. The test is being hailed as proof that drones can be useful in a delivery scenario, particularly in rural and remote areas that are hard to reach via ground vehicles. But the range and flight time of drones means that opportunities are limited. Amazon and others are currently developing the technology to make drone deliveries possible on a commercially viable scale, but rules and regulations currently governing their operation have held development back. Rules on drone flights in the US are currently under revision by the FAA, seeking to enable safe but regulated commercial drone flights. But the proliferation of cheap and readily available drones for personal use has left the law outdated and has caused several near-misses with commercial aircraft. Current UK legislation dictates that drones cannot be flown within 50m of a building or a person or within 150 metres of a built-up area. The maximum flight height is also only 400 feet, while the drone has to remain in line of sight and within 500 metres of the pilot, which has restricted attempts to use drones for delivery or surveillance purposes. Pilots must complete a training

Getting a light plane-car hybrid off the ground seems to be an arduous process. The TF-X, by American flying car company Terrafugia, was announced in May 2013, and will be in development some years yet. But if your interest needed a pique, the company has announced something new: the updated exterior design of the TF-X.
forces while simulating hovering flight, transitioning to forward flight and full forward flight,” Terrafugia wrote. The company, founded in 2006 by MIT aeronautics and management graduates in Woburn, Massachusetts, was expected to start delivering its first Transition units at a projected $279,000 in 2015 or 2016. However, delivery of the first units was originally expected in 2011 and has been postponed several times since then -- and it’s still expected to take a couple more years and cost up to $400,000. The newer flying car will be a hybrid electric vehicle. It will have the capacity to carry four people, fit into a standard singlecar garage, and be both streetlegal and easy to fly -- taking, on average, around five hours to learn to operate in the skies. It will also, Terrafugia claims, be able to take off and land vertically, with “autolanding” at approved sites. In May of 2013, Terrafugia said the development of the TF-X would take between eight to 12 years. So far, it seems to be sticking to that timeline.
In addition, Terrafugia said, the new design for the TF-X has been successfully tested in a one-tenth scale model wind tunnel, which is currently on display at the EAA AirVenture aviation convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. “The model will be tested at the MIT Wright Brothers wind tunnel, the same tunnel that was used to test models of Terrafugia’s Transition. The wind tunnel test model will be used to measure drag, lift and thrust

Air show
The 28th of June saw the beaches of Los Alcázares filled to the bursting with thousands of families eagerly anticipating the Air Show to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Los Alcázares Aerodrome.
Overall, an absolutely fantastic, fun, and free day out for all the family.
Members of the public began arriving as early as 8.00am to guarantee themselves a frontline spot on the beach. By the time the first planes were in the sky at 10.00am the view of the beach had transformed from sand to a rainbow of different colours of beach umbrella. With barley a spot on the sand available, both holiday makers and locals ventured into the warm shallow water to enjoy breathtaking views of this ariel spectacular. Aerobatic Aircraft, both domestic and international, Military and Civilian had arrived at the aerodrome with the aim of providing the public with a day to remember, and they failed to disappoint. A stunning array of ariel stunts and manoeuvres had the crowds heads tilted to the skies cheering and gasping in awe. Hundreds outstretched arms pointed smartphones to the sky and the event instantly began to trend on social media. For 4 hours, a vast array of seaplanes, helicopters, fighter jets and stunt aircraft took to the air enthralling the spectators, but as always the best was saved to last with Murcia´s own “Eagle Patrol” who are based at San Javier, performing a close formation flying show that was so spectacular that it would have put even “Maverick” from the Movie Top Gun to shame.

I have had a long term affair with North Africa, eons before any ‘dangers’ were in our midst. Islam meant very little to me then, even less now, and those days were merely a romantic Sheik-on- a-white -horseLawrence-of-Arabia-with-flowingrobes dream, via the pages of a glossy brochure.
Dawn Llewellyn-Price
Every year we arrive in Spain and one of the first things on my mind is; ‘Must book a flight to Morocco this year!’ My memories are of Souks, belly dancers, mint tea and floor polish, the hammam and carpet bartering, tanneries and trips into the mountains, possibly polished by the misdemeanour’s of ‘yoof’ and its glazed memories. Yet it’s still there, just across the water, and friends of friends who have stayed in Riads in Marrakesh (my stay was on the Northern coastline with a visit to the old capital Fez) make me envious for the sights, smells and sounds that I haven’t seen since my ‘Camp Africa’ days. I’ve also been to Tunisia. To Sousse, no less. I Loved that, too, from the desert trip where we rode into the Sahara on camels, getting pinched bottoms from toothless old men, handing us desert rose rocks from the ground, seeing fifteen year old ‘guards’ holding machine guns, the museum at Tunis, Gabes, the oasis town where they tried to sell us pin-pricked, glass cased scorpions for souvenirs, Matmata, part of the Star Wars set, and Sidi Bou Said, the beautiful blue and white village above the coast. Not forgetting an edge of desert hotel, walls plastered in cockroaches, with men playing cards under the window untill the coach pick up at 4am.
How times have changed. Now I have a quandary. Do I indeed push for a trip to Morocco, or, going on past adventures where I get caught up in hurricanes and narrowly miss events like the shooting of tourists in Cairo and bombs at red sea resorts, and indeed the Tunis event of a few years ago, or avoid it at all costs for the moment?
having the look and feel of where it’s actually supposed to be. Or visit the Port Market on a Sunday. As I write, there are 3,000 British tourists high-tailing it out of Tunisia on fresh foreign office advice of further attacks likely. Tunisia has lost its livelihood. I hope nothing else has happened by the time you read this. Stoically, of course.
That couple we may have all seen on the news after the Sousse atrocity, proudly announcing ‘We’re Brits, we’re staying!’ may have the right attitude, but being stuck in a foreign land, at risk, in the wake of any ‘event’ in these modern times, must now surely be bordering on lunacy? There would be very few ‘Rick’s’ on hand in a lively Casablanca café should the worse happen. I’m probably better off staying on the terrace, lighting a mosquito burner, sitting under my Moroccan lamp, playing my favourite Bedouin Cafe background music, or watching the Wind and the Lion, filmed in Almeria, despite

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group
Our Maintenance Team have been joined by Cath this month, as John 2 has taken over the role of watering during Ken’s Summer absence, ably assisted by Mark and Graham. The team are starting one hour earlier because of the increasing heat & humidity of the past weeks, weeding, sweeping and spraying the streets on a rota basis. Donated trees and plants have all been put in, large amounts of weeds cleared from the verges, another railway sleeper bed built and planted, and extra hours worked to trim all the palms along the dual carriageway. Thanks to all who give to our buckets: So many people arriving in Camposol on holiday notice the marked difference since their previous visit; each Euro helps with landscaping and planting. Thanks also to those who have kindly offered much needed drinks to the workers, despite the fact we may have woken some of them - our apologies: it’s hard to clean streets silently! If you have any spare time, please give the plants near your casa some water, too – every area is suffering in these high temperatures. May we also politely request that dog owners pick up any mess their pets leave behind? It only takes two minutes to deposit a bag in the bin and will keep the area smell and poofree, thanks. We unfortunately have to report yet more thefts: a cream and white oblong stone planter containing summer bedding plants disappeared from C10, Calle Embalse de
Judio, then another was stripped of plants! Please let us know (in strict confidence) if one has suddenly appeared in a garden near you, thanks. Details of our Autumn Social will be announced soon; please support us as it promises to be another great night! Also, a reminder about our Christmas Meal and Dance on 11th December at the Golf Club House. Further details of both these events will be found either on our chalkboards, Facebook and our website; http://www. greenfingersgardenandsocialgroup.com/ or contact John, our Chairman on 634 325 427.
Drip Irrigation -How to save water You probably know this already, but it’s pretty sunny here in Spain, particularly in Murcia. For gardeners on anything but the smallest scale, that’s a problem. You only need to glance into the newsagents here these days and the chances are that the headlines are about water, or the lack of it. Drip irrigation is how to make the best use of this most precious resource. Drip irrigation can be useful for your garden and smallholding too! Since your water will be on the meter here, you too will be looking for ways to save water. Not only can drip irrigation save water, it can save you time and also keep your plants alive when you’re away from home. The first part of making drip irrigation system is design. Plan a route for a ‘main line’: from the water
tap and around the garden. This will be a semi-flexible black plastic pipe which 25mm (an inch) diameter. You can bury it under garden paths so you won’t be tripping over it, but you’ll want to run it on the surface near the plants themselves. The reason for running it on the surface is that you will be wanting to tap into it to add ‘fingers’ of smaller diameter, more flexible tube that takes water to individual plants or groups of plants. At each tree, or group of plants, you will attach a ‘dripper’ (or ‘emitter’ for the technical term) or a tiny sprayer (dripper for trees and large shrubs, spray for herbs, etc). Finally, you will need some kind of head on the water, the more the better, so if you can make sure that there is at least a metre, preferably a couple of metres of head between the bottom of your tank and the first emitter, the system should work well. You can achieve this by putting the tank up on concrete blocks. Now to shopping! You will need some tools, a saw (just about any saw, hacksaw, ripsaw, whatever) for cutting the tube, a pair of pliers for pushing the fittings into the tube, a pair of pipe grips for doing up the fittings on the thicker tube and, more specialised, hole punches for puncturing the tubes. As for materials, let’s start from the tap and move on to the tree. You may need an adaptor for your tap to get on to the tubing. Then it’s a good idea to add a timer-valve. These can cost a few bob to start off with, but once you have left the tap on overnight a few times, or come back from a trip away to find a scorched garden, you’ll be glad you bought one. Next, you’ll need a filter so your drippers don’t clog up. Then you’ll need the 25mm polyethylene (PE) pipe and

at least one end-stop. You may also want some tees. You can buy the 25mm PE pipe by the metre; if the shop insists you buy a roll of 100m go elsewhere for your pipe. The same goes for the 12mm PE pipe you will need for the ‘fingers’. You will need some inserts (for want of a better word) that let you plug the 12mm pipe in as a ‘T’ to the 25mm pipe. At the ends of the 12mm pipe, you will need end stops (very simple affairs that you just stuff in the open end). You will need drippers / sprayers. Your design will dictate how many of which type. Finally you should buy a few ‘goof plugs’ (as the Americans call them) that you can use to plug holes that remain when you change your mind / garden layout (or, as their name implies, you goof and put a hole in the tube where there shouldn’t be one!). These materials are cheap; the 25mm tube is about €0.30 a metre, the 12mm tube is about €0.10 a metre, the drippers are about €0.25 each, 25mm tees around €1.50, 25mm end plugs about €1 each and about €0.05 for the 12mm end plugs. The only things that are ‘pricey’ are the timer valve (can be had for as much as €100, or as little as €20, so worth shopping around) and the filter – around €10. Go to another shop if they are asking much more than this.
You will need to get rid of the remaining gunk that was shipped in the container (usually still has a label on the side so you know what you are dealing with). Then a good dose of washing up liquid, some coarse gravel, a few buckets of water and a helping hand to roll the cube around will clean out the insides. You will need to cover the cube up, not just because they are unsightly, but UV rays from the summer sun will destroy the plastic when the cube isn’t completely full of liquid. Black plastic sheeting (to stop the UV) covered by hessian (to look pretty) should do the job. You will need to connect the cube’s tap to your irrigation pipework – for this you will need a special fitting that comes from a drinking water container. The special fitting usually needs some extra-thick PTFE tape or hessian and plumbers mait to stop it leaking. The special fittings only cost a Euro or so – if you want one that’s made from turned aluminium, specially made for the job, they cost more like €25 each. Installation Tips
Install the pipes and fittings when it’s warm and sunny: The PE pipe is almost rigid when cold and very difficult to straighten out or to puncture for adding fittings. Pressure Reducer: If you are running your system from mains water (a garden tap), you may need to install a pressure reducer just after the filter. Flush your system: You don’t want to have to re-install all those drippers if a handful of grit (or swarf from sawing the PE pipe) makes its way to the ends of the pipes. Lay out the pipes, make all the tees, install the filter but don’t connect any drippers or install any end stops yet. Start the water supply to flush things through. Then install the emitters and end plugs (stop the water first!) If your system keeps blocking: If, despite your filter, your drippers keep blocking, it’s probably down to hard water. Farmers periodically flush their systems out with dilute hydrochloric or nitric acid. If you think this is a little dangerous for you, as well you might, you can install a reverse osmosis water softener at/before the garden tap - expensive but effective. New Dumb-But-Deadly Trend: Sunburn ‘Art’
Health &Wellbeing tanned or sunburned skin. “Sunburns cause DNA damage to the skin, accelerate skin aging, and increase your lifetime skin cancer risk,” the statement reads. “In fact, sustaining five or more sunburns in youth increases lifetime melanoma risk by 80 percent. On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns.” Dr. Deborah Sarnoff, senior vice president of the Skin Cancer Foundation, said that people tend to underestimate the health hazards of sunburns.
Experts warn against the dangers of the increasingly popular practice

“People may think this is creative or a new art form, but the fact remains that sunburns are terribly dangerous, and I don’t think the average person on the street understands that to this day,” Sarnoff said. “There’s really no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanned skin is damaged skin.” Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is expected to kill about almost 10,000 Americans alone this year. Close to 74,000 new cases of melanoma are projected for this year, and there are nearly 1 million people in the United States who are living with melanoma.
The ultraviolet rays in sunshine or, for that matter, in the rays emitted by tanning beds, damage the DNA inside skin cells, making them more apt to turn cancerous, according to the American Cancer Society. Further, the risk is cumulative, Sarnoff said. The more tans and sunburns a person receives throughout their lifetime, the more likely they are to

develop skin cancer or melanoma at some point.
The sunburn art trend will become particularly troubling if it reaches a point where people are trying to outdo each
Sunburns are painful and potentially cancer-causing, but that hasn’t stopped them from becoming an increasingly popular means of artistic expression. Experts are now speaking out against “sunburn art,” a new social media trend in which people use stencils or strategically applied sunblock to create a do-it-yourself temporary sunburn tattoo on their bodies.

Perfect Conditions On Thursday 25th June, the society had its monthly stapleford competition at the Aguilon Golf Course, which has to be one of the top rated courses in the area. The course offers fairways and greens to a standard that few of the other local courses can match, and presents a great test for all of our members from the lowest to the highest handicappers. A split start enabled us to get away on time and in perfect playing conditions, with sun, and a little breeze, we were all enjoying the day. When all were back at the 19th enjoying a well-earned drink, the cards were sorted and it was found that two players, Bob Skinner and John Brown (both pictured above) had notched up a score of 34 points, and in view of recent rule changes no countback was carried out, with them being declared joint winners. In 3rd place was Jeff Perry with 31, followed by Stuart Boocock on 30 points. The nearest the pin winners were John Brown, and Mike Harrison. As the summer has now fully enveloped us all, we have a game booked for August 27th at La Serena Golf with an early 9.00am start to avoid most of the heat of the day. Please let the secretary know asap if you intend to play. Geoff Sharp hatters45@msn.com

Despite the success, changes have been made behind the scenes as the popular coach Javi, who guided the team to promotion, did not possess the necessary qualifications to coach the team at the higher level. He has been replaced by Victor who last season was the coach of Alhama of the Tercera Division, the fourth tier of Spanish football. The services of Javi have not, however, been lost to Mazarron. He has been appointed as Sporting Director of all the junior teams up to and including the juveniles with the task of overseeing all youth development at Mazarron Football Club. He will also be taking a Level 2 coaching course to enable him to coach at a higher level in the future. Training for the first team squad will commence on 3rd August and two new signings have already been announced with new coach Victor bringing with him two of his Alhama squad from last season in Silverio and Jose Bazan. Most of last season’s squad have expressed a desire to stay with the club and will be assessed by the new coach during pre-season training. It is hoped that the large crowds who followed Mazarron in the Play off Semi Final and Final games against CD Juvenia and CD Esparragal will return to support the Club in the higher division. The atmosphere generated by the fans certainly played a great part
For the uninitiated, Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The expat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Los Amigos hold many social events during the year including a very successful monthly Luncheon Club which visits restaurants throughout the region. A coach picks members and friends up at various points throughout Camposol, enabling everyone to enjoy a few (or in some cases, many!!) drinks during lunch. The Restaurante Miras in Lebor was the venue for the June lunch where an excellent four course meal with coffee and drinks included was enjoyed. July was a time for reflection on what had been a very successful season for Mazarron Football Club. Promotion to the Preferente Autonomica left the supporters eagerly awaiting the start of the 2016/17 season which is expected to commence on the weekend of 5th/6th September although fixtures have not been released at the time of going to press.

report on this outing will be available for next month’s edition. There have been many more exciting events held during the past twelve months. Last October the Annual “President’ Bash” at Mariano’s featured tributes to John Lennon and Gary Barlow. Also in October there was the two hour Cliffs of Tinoso Boat trip from Puerto de Mazarron followed by an excellent lunch at Vigos. December saw the Turkey and Tinsel Christmas Dinner at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf and in January members and friends embarked on a two night coach trip to Valencia where we stayed at the excellent Expo Hotel. On St Patricks Day there was a coach trip to the Gran Mundo Chinese Restaurant in the Port and, of course, the 6th Annual Gala Evening and Dinner at the Hotel La Cumbre preceded by the Celebrity Golf Day at Camposol Club de Golf. May saw a most enjoyable Quiz Night and meal at the Black Bull as well as a coach trip to the Licor 43 Factory in Cartagena. The Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Player of the Year presentations were held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf in June where an excellent Barbeque was enjoyed and last month members travelled to the Motor Racing Circuit in Cartagena for an evening of high speed racing. Plans are in full swing for another busy twelve months. It is hoped that a Quiz Night and Barbeque will be held at the home of members Alan and Sue Lyle at 6 pm on Thursday 3rd September immediately following the Los Amigos Social meeting. Then, this year’s President’s Bash will be held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf on Tuesday 6th October when the fabulous Soul Power will be making a return visit. Tickets, including a meal are 13€ for members and 15€ for non-members. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC weekly meetings are held every Thursday at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. During July and early August, meetings are normally suspended as there is no football and a lot of members are away. However, some members will still be popping into the Club House every Thursday afternoon so why not join them for a club for a chat and a refreshing drink in beautiful surroundings and pick up a membership form for next season. Los Amigos membership runs from 1st August each year and costs just 10€ which includes reduced coach travel and reduced prices to most of

football el pareton (age 18 – 60+)
every wednesday 6.30pm – 8pm After playing Saturday and Sunday league football for many years back in England and having the crack and a laugh with the lads I found that it was one of the things I missed most when I came to live in spain. So i decided, almost two years ago, to try and set up a team of lads together of similar age to myself (52). i posted on various facebook groups to see what kind of interest there was, the response was quite good and i was hopeful that we could at least have enough people to have a game of 5-a-side. We agreed a day that was suitable for us all and as it was during winter one of the guys suggested el pareton sports centre for the location as it has indoor facilities including a changing area and showers. there were eight of us in total for our first kick about and everyone enjoyed it. we rounded the evening off by going for a beer at the local bar ‘la vida.’ After posting details of the football every week on facebook (which i still do) the numbers have steadily increased to a stage where the numbers were too many to play indoors so we decided to play outside on the larger astro turf pitch with floodlights and we continue to play there today. we have a minimum of 1820 players on a regular basis with ages ranging from 18 – 60 plus. We all enjoy our wednesday kick about and a beer or two afterwards at ‘LaVida.’ Wives and girlfriends are also included as we have a monthly get-together at different local bars/restaurants. I would like to thank all the current players for their continued support. new players welcome – El Pareton sports centre 6.30pm every wednesday. many thanks Hector Hurley tel: 630455336
SAMM CHARITY RACE A great day was enjoyed by spectators and competitors when the race staged by SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, on June 17th raised over 1200€ for their chosen charity AMMA, Alzheimer Mar Menor Association. The event was a team race; with four teams of three boats, one IOM radio controlled boat, one dinghy and one day boat. The IOM radio controlled yachts opened the proceedings at 11:30,
resulting in a very close four lap race. As each team’s IOM boat finished, the dinghy commenced its first lap in ideal conditions. As this finished, it passed a baton to the day boat which did the second lap. Then the dinghy did the third lap till each boat completed four laps. The format was interesting and exciting. As the race progressed, the conditions gradually became more challenging (the Easterly wind force 2-3 at the start built to around 4-5) and the baton passing increasingly difficult, often requiring a number of attempts before success was achieved. For some, this proved to be decisive, as with the increasing wind came swimming, the odd paint exchange and shroud twanging as battens were exchanged. This provided both excitement and anticipation of the result, whilst adding to the ever increasing complexity of keeping track of the race. Despite this, the officials did a great job recording the exchanges and the numerous start and finish times, helped of course, by some computer timing and reporting. Overall, all participants agreed this proved to be a good spirited, fun and worthy event (albeit challenging) and worth doing again. The final results were: 1st: Team Orange, total corrected time 50.46 min IOM, Nigel Lane; Martin, Tony Jones, Eric Bromham; Catamaran, George Noden, Derek English, John Parker. 2nd: Team White, total corrected time 54.59 min IOM, Ernie Foster; Shoestring Tres, Tug Wilson, Pat Fleck; Shoestring Uno, Jack Moss, Jeff Beadle, Dave Hardwicke 3rd: Team Stripes, total corrected time 58.50 min IOM, Rob Nichols; Bosun, Bob James, Robert Brice; Shoestring Quatro, Vernon O’Byrne, Jim Moyles, Richard Ford 4th: Team Green, did not finish IOM, Eric Millar; Shoestring Dos, Tim Clarke, Paul Shard; Sirocco, Bob Blinkhorn, Janice Penning, Nilam Wright Many thanks to the officials for all their hard work Main Officials Bob Miles, Grahame Gannon, Paul Miles Hobbs IOM Officials Rosie Wilson, Nancy Jones, Nigel Lane Rib Crew Andy Grant, Eddie Barlow Committee Boat Helm Mike Phillips Special thanks to Paul Miles Hobbs, Bob’s son-in-law, for creating the program used for timing and result calculations whilst here on holiday.

Bad British drivers: why we’re a nightmare on the roads in Europe From confusion over road signs to a lack of confidence: the reality of the hopeless Brit behind the wheel The stereotype of the Brit abroad dictates that if a foreigner doesn’t understand us, we simply repeat ourselves - in English - twice as loudly. And now a new survey done by online holiday booking company, Holiday Extras, has revealed that two thirds of us want European road signs in English. The problems with the British driver on the Continent don’t stop there. Apparently, low confidence, lack of knowledge and poor language skills make driving a nightmare for many. The survey revealed that 26 per cent of us struggle with driving on the right hand side and 36 per cent say that navigating and understanding road signs is a challenge. Sadly, only 11 per cent said they positively enjoyed the experience of driving when abroad. It gets worse. When asked if they felt knowledgeable enough to drive confidently and safely when abroad, 60 per cent said they didn’t. A fifth of drivers said they were unlikely to pass a foreign driving test and 15 per cent admitted to being amazed that there aren’t more rules for foreign drivers. However, rather than battle through with a stiff upper lip, 12 per cent said they constantly worry about driving.

Tesla’s developed a new fuse that uses electronics and its own tiny lithium ion battery to detect when it will melt, and cut power if necessary. That lets you build in less of a margin of error, and push the amps higher.
Bond Cars #4
Model: 2000 GT (1967) Bond Movie: You Only Live Twice (1967) Synopsis: Known as Japan’s first supercar, the Toyota 2000 GT was the obvious car of choice for You Only Live Twice, a Bond film set primarily in Japan. Only 351 models were produced, making the car rarer than a DB5. The 2000 GT was actually a hardtop coupé, but the low roof proved too restrictive for Sean Connery, who was too tall to sit comfortably in the car. At short notice, Toyota made modifications to produce a special open top version just for the film.
Car joke A Texas rancher was visiting a farmer in Israel. The proud Israeli showed him around. “Here is where I grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash. Over there I built a play set for my kids, next to the doghouse,” the farmer said. The land was tiny, and the Texan was surprised by its small size. “Is this all your land?” he asked. “Yes,” the Israeli said proudly. “This is all mine!” “You mean this is it? This is all of it?” the Texan said incredulously. “Yes, yes, this is really all mine!” “Well, son,” said the Texan, “back home I’d get in my car before the sun’d come up and I’d drive and drive and drive, and when the sun set, why, I’d only be halfway across my land!” “Oh, yes,” replied the Israeli farmer wistfully, “I used to have a car like that.”

Bankinter Mortgages Up Bankinter granted a total of 5,523 mortgage loans during the first six months of this year, with a value amounting to 906 million euros. It was reported that these figures represent an increase of 34% over the same period of 2014, when a total of 4,074 mortgage loans were granted by the entity, worth 674 million euros. The organisation reported that these data consolidate 2015 as the “most brilliant” year for the mortgage market in Spain since the real estate crisis, as well as confirming Bankinter’s place as one of the financial institutions “most active in the granting of new mortgages, with a market share that now exceeds 6%”. In light of this positive data, the entity indicated that they expect to close the year with over 2,000 million euros of new mortgages granted. Ignacio Lozano from Bankinter explained that these favourable results are due to several factors, among which he highlighted the entity’s “intense work” in the commercial network,

Spains Most Haunted House is Up for Sale Spains most haunted house in Campilllas, Malaga has gone up for sale. A 19th century ruin, the building known as El Cortijo Jurado had gone up for a cool 16 million euros. For that bargain price the new owner will get the keys to the 210 room mansion which boasts more than 365 windows, a terrifying history and reported paranormal phenomena. The house was constructed in the middle of the 19th century by the wealthy Heredia family, who owned a thriving agricultural business.
2015
Legend has it that the Heredia family, together with other wealthy families from the area, kidnapped young girls between the ages of 18 and 21 and subjected them to satanic rituals, which included rape, torture and the eventual disposal of their mutilated and dead bodies.
screams and ghostly sightings. It also has a following among aficionados of ghosts and paranormal activities and has been examined many times by experts. What better way to spend 16 million euros?
Nothing was ever proven to link the family to these murders despite the fact that young girls had disappeared from the local area at the time and their bodies found on the banks of a river that ran close to the finca. It is believed that there are secret tunnels under the house that the family used to remove the girls’ bodies from the premises without being seen. It is also believed that other bodies are buried deep within the grounds of the mansion. El Cortijo Jurado passed on to the Jurado family in 1925 and the house has since become famous for the numerous reports of strange noises,

Well it’s been all go this last month. We have been closing and cleaning the Fuente Alamo shop prior to giving the keys back to the landlord. Roldan shop is now very much underway. The decorating, counters and rails are all in place and the shelves and clothing rails are being stocked awaiting the opening which we estimate will be Saturday 1st August. With the weather hitting the top 30´s and low 40´s the days seem so long and everything appears harder to do. The donkeys and the other animals being fed early in the morning, while its cool!!!! and some evenings as late as 10pm with snacks in the afternoon of course, making the days 20 hours long, Anyway the animals are all OK and spending hours and hours in the shade. Of the five pups we had dumped on us month before last, all but one has now gone to their new homes and all have settled in and are happy. The other Phoenix has a home in Germany and leaves in August. This month we have found a new home for two of our donkeys, but the home is in Tarragona some 5 hours away. We are waiting for the paper work and a date to move them. We are in the process of updating and up grading our web site, it has taken quite a while and with being so busy with the shops we just haven’t had the time to sit and go through everything that we need to. All being well the new site will be up and running within the next month. We have seen the proposed site and were very excited about it. Don’t forget that even in this heat we are still on Camposol B car park 11.30 to 1.30 on Mondays collecting your unwanted goods to sell in our shops, why not pop and say Hola. We still have several dogs looking for that special home, take a look at these two beauties .......Mika a 18 month old Podenco , who came from Murcia parerra , and Luca 4 yrs old small mixed terrier type, this boy was found in Canadas del Romero one Sunday having had some sort of trauma to his little body . PLEASE REMEMBER IF IT’S HOT FOR YOU.....THEN IT’S HOT FOR YOUR DOG, WALK WHEN IT’S COOLING
We wish to thank the ladies from El Pareton for starting so early and donating some presents to be given out in the festive season. We will of course be appealing for such items in subsequent months. We appeal this holiday season for toiletries, sun creams etc that holiday makers cannot take with them when they return home. These items are distributed to the families we help. We are currently in the process of compiling a collection for our bi-annual Fashion Show. The quality items donated throughout the year enable us to put on this well frequented and popular event at Mariano’s Restaurant. This year it will be held on 5th October. When you sort out your Autumn/Winter

clothing, if you feel that you no longer wish to keep any such items, please think of us and donate to this event. This enables us to raise much needed funds to help our clients achieve a better lifestyle. We appeal, as always, for more volunteers to help us man the two shops we have in Puerto Mazarrón and Mazarrón Town. Donations can be left at either of our shops. Alternatively our van is at: -Country Club from 11.00-1.00 on Mondays. -Sector A car park from 11.30-1.00 on Tuesdays. -Sector B the second and last Friday of every month with the Table Top team. If you have large items to donate, please call 634 357 137 to arrange collection with our van which makes pick-ups on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings to coincide with our Lidl run. We have an arrangement with them to pick up any rejected foodstuffs which our volunteers take back to our shop to clean and sort through, discarding any unsuitable items. The remaining items are given to clients in the Port and Mazarrón area enabling them to receive free fresh produce, which Lidl would otherwise just dispose of in the bin. Heartfelt thanks to Lidl and also to the volunteers who process and distribute these items, it can sometimes be quite a dirty job. Please note, we are no longer publishing any photos of our clients. This decision has been made for two reasons: -To respect their privacy. -To comply with data protection and child protection legislation. Anyone who wishes to see the gratitude shown to us by the people we help or the cute kids’ smiley faces when we give them presents is more than welcome to attend one of our Aid Days. Call 677 318 605 for more information. Thank you all for your continued support to our worthwhile cause.

My mate saw a ventriloquist last night. Instead of a dummy he had a piece of carpet. How was he?, I asked Ruggish! A housewife takes a lover during the day, while her husband is at work. Not aware that her 9 year old son was hiding in the wardrobe. Her husband came home unexpectedly, so she hid her lover in........... (you’ve guessed it) the wardrobe. So, now the boy has company. Boy: “It’s dark in here.” Man: “Yes it is.” Boy: “I have a cricket ball.” Man: “That’s nice.” Boy: “Want to buy it?” Man: “No, thanks.” Boy: “My dad’s outside.” Man: “OK, how much?” Boy: “£250.” In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the mom’s lover are in the wardrobe together. Boy: “ It’s dark in here.” Man: “Yes, it is.” Boy: “I have a pair of batting gloves.” Man: “That’s nice.” Boy: “Want to buy ‘em?” Man: “No, thanks.” Boy: “I’ll tell my Dad about
Last month’s Suduko answers
this, I will also mention the time and place.” Man: “How much?” Boy: “£750.” Man: “Fine.” A few days later, the father says to the boy, “Grab your cricket stuff and let’s go to the park for a game” The boy says, “I can’t. I sold them.” The father asks, “How much did you sell them for?” The son says, “£1,000.” The father says, “That’s terrible to over-charge your friends like that. That is way more than those things cost. I’m going to take you to church and make you confess.” They go to church and the dad alerts the priest and makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and closes the door. The boy says, “ It’s dark in here.” The priest says, “Don’t start that sh*t again, OK, how much?” A cannibal visited the witch doctor with a serious skin rash. The doctor gave him a small pot of grease to rub on. He returned next week completely cured. “ Wonderful stuff what is it” he said “My best friend died . I boiled him in a pot for six days then skimmed the grease off” he replied. “ What do you call it?” Said the cannibal. “ Pal o’ mine lotion” replied the witch doctor. Written across the wall of the cave were the following symbols: A female figure.. a donkey... a shovel... and a fish
It was considered a unique find and the writings were said to be at least three thousand years old! The piece of stone was removed, brought to the museum, and archaeologists from around the world came to study the ancient symbols. They held a huge meeting after months of conferences to discuss the meaning of the markings. The President of the society pointed to first drawing and said: “This is a woman. We can see these people held women in high esteem. You can also tell they were intelligent, as the next symbol is a donkey, So they were smart enough to have animals help them till the soil. The next drawing is a shovel, which means they had tools to help them.” Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish which means that if a famine hit the earth and food didn’t grow, they seek food from the sea. The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrews. The audience applauded enthusiastically. Then a little old Jewish man stood up in the back of the room and said, “Idiots, Hebrew is read from right to left...... It says: ‘Holy Mackerel, Dig The Ass On That Chick
