JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Well here we are again. Log burners alight, Christmas trees up, fairy lights, giant inflatable Santas, It hardly seems like a year ago I was sat here in front of the computer pretending to write an opening article for the magazine so I could get out of taking my better half on our yearly pilgrimage to Nueva Condomina to do the Christmas shopping. Those brave men among you who have ever been dragged around the ladies section of Primark in mid December will understand my motivation for trying to avoid this Festive day of hell! On the whole I am hoping for a quieter Christmas this year, like I hope for every year. Last Christmas Day was spent mostly at the animal hospital in Murcia with a stray dog that had turned up on my doorstep on Christmas Eve with a gunshot wound. As an eternal optimist I consoled myself that although I had missed my Christmas Dinner, the drive to Murcia and back was superb due to the deserted roads. Thankfully the dog survived and was later re-homed in the UK thanks to the efforts of one of the many fantastic charities that we are fortunate enough to have in this area. Yes indeed, this year I fully intend to have a quiet Christmas. I fantasise about relaxing in front of the log burner in my new slippers and Christmas jumper, sipping some mulled wine before snoozing off my lunch and waking up in time for the Downton Abbey Christmas Special. In reality however I foresee a much different scene. You see, I am the proud owner of an excitable 3 year old that has been counting the sleeps until Santa comes since October. I anticipate a wakeup call at around 3.45am followed by lots of screaming, jumping up and down on the sofa and frenzied present opening. This will be followed by a day of me being forced, under threat of tantrum, to assemble an array of toys and games, all of which are likely to have the instructions printed in Chinese or have 1 key component missing rendering them useless and therefore triggering the tantrum that I have been desperately trying to avoid. The Joys of Christmas? I wouldn’t have it any other way! Whatever you are doing this Christmas and New Year, be sure to have a great time! From all of us here at the Journal and from all our advertisers we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you for reading our magazine over the last 12 months. We hope that you enjoy this last issue of 2012 and we look forward to seeing you again in 2013!

Merry Christmas everyone, Robert Rutherford

True Brits

Despite the weather, more than 300 people turned out to attend the open air Remembrance Service held in Parque Los Palacios on November 11. The

As a ps the service was run by the Wellspring Victory Church. It was simply run, hymns, prayers we could share and a very short sermon by Pastor Andrew. He told the story, true he said, of the firemen in the USA who in the aftermath of a forest fire came over the corpse of a very large bird. When it was disturbed, three live chicks appeared from under the remains of the bird’s wings; the pastor used this mother love story to illustrate God’s love for us. He also sounded the

event would have had to be cancelled had it not been for the tent. Our thanks to Dickie Davis and the Camposol Fiesta Committee for providing this. Fortunately the heavy rain eased off for the duration of the service. Several hymns were presented by the singers of Wellspring Victory Church, leading up to “We will remember them”, read by Mike Cotes, Ex servicemen’s association, and “The last post”, being played live on the trumpet by Pastor Andrew himself to start the period of two minutes silence at noon, local time.

Remarkably in a otherwise very dull and wet Sunday, the weather was kind during the service. The gardens are a very real tribute to the work of the Sector A gardening group, make a superb baclcloth to this service.

Maria Martinez Sanchez, councillor for Health and Heritage, who gifted a plant for the park. The mayor was required to attend the event in Bolnuevo, so sent his apologies, and our local councillor, Pepe Gomez, is in hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery. Several plants were presented at the end of the service , and all will be found a permanent home in the park when it stops raining. Please visit the park in the sunshine to enjoy the wonderful colours displayed at their best in this beautiful garden. The perfect way for Los Palacios Garden Volunteers to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Why not make a resolution to join us in 2013 ?

Legal & Financial Services, UK Lawyer from the Camposol Business Centre, who founded the choir towards the end of last year. After some thinking, it was decided by the choir that this money would be utilised for the purchase of special equipment to aid the choir in their future performances, and yes their new material does include the song “A Life of Riley” amongst with lots of others – and right across the board from Adele to Kathy Kirby Here are details of their upcoming performances: Friday 23rd November - 4pm - Los Almagros (in aid of the charity “Operation Smiles”) - Free Entry with donations. Saturday 1st December - 1.00 - 1.30pm La Gato Verde in the Port (in support of Age Concern) Tuesday 18th December - 9pm -The New Royal, El Alamillo in the Port

Well it’s a topical song don’t you think – reflecting our lives in Spain!

So make sure you see at least 1 if not all of their performances.

There has been a lot of activity on the choir front in the last few months, so here is an update.

The choir is now operating under the very able direction of Ann Thompson and through whose talents achieved their success at the Fiesta this year. Anyone is welcome to join and it is stressed you do not need to be able to read music or have previous experience – the only required ingredient is that you have a desire to sing with others and to just see what you can achieve!!

Many of us saw the Harlequins sing at the Camposol Fiesta this June – and how pleasing was to see the results of all their efforts since the inception of the choir. Its fantastic to see real community spirit and in a project from which everyone can benefit. In fact, the Fiesta Committee were so impressed, they made a very generous award to the choir of 300E in acknowledgment of their contribution to our community. This was presented by Dickie Davies on behalf of the Fiesta Committee and very gratefully received on behalf of the choir by Shirley Fisher

Anyone who enjoys singing or would like to know more about it, and would like to join the choir, please ring Ann on 628 149 840 or email her at annbobthom@ hotmail.com and she will give you all the information.

MABS Mazarrón Race for Life is a Huge Success Blue skies and a fresh breeze greeted the participants in the MABS Cancer Support Group’s eighth annual Race for Life in Mazarrón. People were able to walk or run a 4Km or 8Km course and some took their dogs along. Almost 100 people took part and MABS Mazarrón has pledges of 5655€ which, combined with funds received on the day, should mean that MABS will reach its 2012 Race for Life target of 6000€. MABS Mazarrón Co-ordinator, Zue Burgess, is delighted: “We are really pleased that so many turned out on a Sunday morning to help us raise funds for the local community” she said. “We

are currently supporting 86 people and their families, who are affected by cancer, in the Mazarrón area, so every centimo raised ensures that we can continue supporting those people. We are very grateful to the people of Camposol and Mazarrón”. If you have the bug for running and raising money for MABS, the next Race for Life will be in Los Alcázares on Sunday, 11 November, starting at

Support your friendly EEC! There are lies, demned lies and there is statistics. A trifle unfair to statistics! It’s how they are used which is the problem. Last month Tom made much of the decline in exports to the EC, that for example, public utilities had fallen into foreign hands, “taking with them thousands of jobs” In fact in investing here the French Water companies are depriving France of investment, not the UK! It also neglects the fact that half of our visible and invisible exports go to EEC countries. The EEC is our biggest trading partner! The cost of belonging to the EEC is used, without any estimate of the benefits brought as well. Germany and the UK are the largest contributors, and the economically healthiest! The UK is one of the most significant forces in what is the worlds largest trading bloc! He fears the “certain extinction of the UK as a major trading nation in the long run? What is

2012

the long run? In the long run oil resources will run out, the world will change significantly. More likely is the demise of the worlds trade in the wake of global warming! Human beings have proved very adaptable to change. Look at the last 20 years and the internet! To say that Britain scrupulously adheres to European laws and directives whilst others ie the French, ignore them almost certainly neglects the fact that the UK has been taken to the cleaners at the European courts more frequently than anyone else. What directives do the French ignore? They exploit some, the CAP for example, but our farmers have benefited as well. There are down sides, look at the way tomato producers are abandoning Spain for Morocco! The most breathtaking aspect of his argument is that the Germans would want to continue to sell cars to the UK after the demise of the UK in Europe! Of course they would And I would hope that the UK would export more to the rest of the world! If the UK did not then there would be a problem. Europe still remains our biggest market, and most accessible. A Market we would largely lose because of the very tarrif barriers, Tom believes could be shifted by Britain’s import strength. One major reason why the UK went into the EEC in the first place, was the two facts; fact one, tarrif barriers were very adversely affecting both visible and invisible exports to the EEC, and secondly the UK wanted to

2012

attract overseas investment! Without the Japanese and the Germans there would be no car industry left. Look at coal. Athur Scargill was right, the fight was a fight to the death, the death of coal! We sit on a 1000 years of coal and import coal from countries with disastrous social histories for killing workers underground! What’s happening now? The rediscovery of coal and its renewed development, probably with over seas involvement. Its not been the EEC which has been the UK’s problem, its been internal Poltical policies! Thatcherism which led to the bleeding to death of manufacturing and Blairism which was all frothy, glossy PR. Lastly, self interest! The UK stands and falls with Europe. The UK is indisputably part of Europe, not way out in the Atlantic close to the USA! If Scotland votes to sever ties with the UK, then they also sever ties with the EEC. Scotland would rapidly find itself isolated .Any Scots living out here should bear in mind that out of the EEC they would lose, health care, find travel more troublesome, their tax affairs much more complex, just to name three points. Its not for nothing that proponents of the get out of Europe brigade are known as Little Englanders! Rod Sawyer

C Sector and across the rambla to B Sector with the commercial centre in the distance. Camposol B Commercial: This camera is set up to cover the majority of bars and restaurants in the B Commercial centre and is a well known place for people to visit and wave to friends and relatives watching in online in the UK and worldwide. Espu単a Sunsets: This camera is set up facing the distant Sierra Espu単a mountains and every evening gives a wonderful picture of the sun setting over the mountains. Camposol Sector D: This camera covers one of the main roads through sector D and gives an insight in to the varied villas that have been built on Camposol. It is also one for the fans of bats as, in the dark hours, they can be seen flying around the street lights chasing the moths and bugs.

Camposol Sector A: This is the latest camera installed and gives a fantastic view from the A Sector Commercial Centre across B Sector to the golf course and distant mountains. All of these webcams can be easily accessed by visiting the home page on either of these websites: www.SensolGolfVillaSales.com or www.ParamountResortVillaRentals.com Future plans include preparation for the Camposol Fiesta 2013 and possibly cameras in other locations including the Puerto De Mazarron paseo & beach. As many of you know the Coato Bioshop is a place close to my heart. For me it’s a lovely reminder of how lucky we are to live in a region blessed with a wonderful climate that lends itself well to the cultivation of some of the finest natural produce that can be be found anywhere in the world. Olive oils, Honey, Pimenton and Almonds to name but a few. While I was ambling around the shop last week I noticed that the staff were working hard filling up several gift baskets and hampers with products from around the store. It turns out that they were preparing the traditional Christmas Hampers or “Cestas de Navidad” for the staff. Christmas Hampers have long been a tradition here in Spain. Dating back to the Roman Period, employers would give their employees food in a basket by way of a Christmas Bonus. In the late 19th Century those who worked in public service could expect to receive a wicker basket filled with food and by the mid 20th century this tradition had spread to the private sector. Soon companies began to give the “Cesta de Navidad” to their valued clients. In a Cesta de Navidad you can normally find products such as nougat, marzipan, chocolate, cured cheeses and meats. Sausage, Salami and Jamon are often found in the hamper alongside some alcoholic beverages such as wines, spirits and Cava. I have been told that these days the “Cesta de Navidad” is not just given by companies. Over the last few years the poor economic climate has led to a renaissance of the Christmas Hamper. Families and friends now often trade theses baskets over the festive period as they would rather offer a practical, thoughtful gift as opposed to something materialistic. It’s a nice a nice sentiment and a true sign of in the times that we live in. This Christmas I’m sure that we will all be invited out to lots of parties, visiting our neigbours and friends and having them visiting us. If you would like to offer them a thoughtful gift that they will truly appreciate then visit the Bio-Shop at Coato. Here you will find an instore catalogue of the different “Cestas De Navidad” they offer. They really are great

value for money starting at just 20€ upwards. This year the Bio-Shop have some set ready made baskets selling for 20, 30 and 50€, although you can make you own up. If you want to customize your ready made basket then the friendly staff in store will be happy to assist, allowing you swap items for different ones dependant on your personal preferences. The Coato Bio-Shop sells many different types of products and even all natural cosmetics made from local almonds an honey! There are literally thousands of combinations for you to make your basket up allowing you to give a truly unique gift of locally produced gourmet products to your loved ones. In addition to this, The Journal has partnered with Coato Bio-Shop to offer you a voucher you can redeem for free Xmas gift when spending 20€ or more in the Bio-Shop. Merry Xmas everyone!

Life can certainly seem like a roller coaster ride & GOmaD knows this to be true. Moments of immense highs to extreme lows! Our Highs started on Oct 13 at Mazarron Country Club when ‘Barrington’, Lea & Team organised a fundraising event which raised an amazing 1826.00. Then an anonymous donation of 1000 & a further 250 from Los Amigos (Golf Society) were given for our School Book Project – books were purchased, unfortunately not all our children were helped – there is such need out there! Then we were referred by Shirley Fisher Legal & Financial Services for a partial house clearance of quality items. Many thanks to you all for enabling us to continue Making A Difference. The lows; we have recently visited homes in the Puerto, full of tales of woe – many tears & prayers were shared as people struggle with everyday life. A young man who lived in a car, with a mountain of problems, became so desolate he tried to take his own life. Single mothers balancing severe health & financial worries, one saying she would “rather steal than lose her home”, others have resorted to extreme measures to earn money e.g. prostitution. There is so much work for GOmaD – please continue to support us so we can support them xx ´Lidl´, still continue to Bless us with fruit/ veg & food items. We currently collect on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. Come & join us in the preparation & the

distribution to Clients who turn up. A great atmosphere the other week, as Spanish, English, Ecuadorian, Moroccan all worked in unity together (photos attached), reminds GOmaD that ALL are equal in HIS eyes: John 3v16 For GOD so loved the world He sent his one & only son..the colour of your skin or the language of your tongue & neither is GOmaD. Every Tuesday one of our GOmaD Vans will be parked in the Lower Car Park, Camposol A between 11am – 1pm. Please take this opportunity to drop-off any items you may have. For larger items;

Some interesting Christmas facts & figures

What with getting presents, watching telly, eating sweets and having a bit of a snooze in the afternoon, Christmas can be a pretty hectic time. But what about the people who really do the work to bring festive cheer to the UK? Impress your friends and family with these facts and figures. Christmas Trees 7.6 million Christmas trees are sold each year The tree in London’s Trafalgar Square is chopped down in Norway, by the Mayor of Oslo The 21.5m high tree needs a crane to put it up when it arrives in the UK It’s hung with 612 halogen lamps, and people sing carols around it every night Food More than 3,000 metric tonnes of Robertson’s mincemeat is sold in the runup to the 25th 10 million turkeys are sold each year which is a whole load of turkey soup, curry and sandwiches for lunch on Boxing Day Presents and cards Six million rolls of Sellotape are sold in the run-up to the big day. That’s 369,000km of the sticky gift wrapping stuff, 55 times the length of the River Nile

In the four weeks before Christmas, two billion bits of mail will be sent That means 22,000 extra post-people will be working, 21 more post flights will fly each day, and three times the number of post trains will set off The last date you should post something in time for Christmas by first class is 20 December

Janette Bull

Janette Bull’s 65th birthday, but she didn’t want cards or presents and asked for a donation to MABS Mazarrón instead. Forty friends and family sat down to a delicious 3 course meal at The Trevi in Camposol and Janette, who is a keen supporter and friend of MABS, raised a splendid total of 360€ for them. Diane Choularton, MABS Fundraising Coordinator, was delighted, thanking Janette and her party guests for their generously. “This is a great way to fundraise,” she said “and we had good food, good company and good fun doing it.”

NEW, INNOVATIVE, TYRE, PUNCTURE PROOFING PRODUCT, COMES TO MURCIA! Puncture Safe is an award winning gel which is injected into your tyre through the valve, (no need to remove the wheel), which coats the inside of your tread and is a PERMANENT solution to punctures as it seals a puncture, as soon as you get one. It is not a ‘get me home’ product but lasts for the life of the tyre. It also helps the tyre wear, because it keeps the tyre cooler while it is running, leaving less rubber on the road, important in hot climates like Spain. So it pays for itself! Puncture Safe Murcia run a mobile service, where they come to you and do the installation, which is done by their trained staff and take around 20 minutes. They are usually also to be found in the car park opposite Consum, on Camposol B, on a Monday or Friday, late morning and lunchtime, so they can complete your installation while you are shopping or having a snack. Cars cost from just 60€ and motorbikes from 40€. Never worry about a puncture again! Camposol Residents Association

When the closure of the temporary access on D11 was replaced with what is considered as a significantly inferior route on D7, committee member José Navarro was moved to investigate the circumstances surrounding the legality of the former preferred option; as a result his efforts uncovered official Plan Parcial and Catastro documentation that indicated that the route that connected with D11 was in fact a public right of way. Following the council’s initial surprise and subsequent indifference when approached with the evidence José corresponded with the owners of the land in question, Grupo Hortofrutícola Paloma, requesting that the access be made available. Not surprisingly the response from that company by way of Chief Executive, Juan Hernández Navarro, although polite, was at the same time dismissive, citing legal and practical reasons such a safety. Although any successful conclusion might well come too late to prove beneficial to the present situation it is felt important

Merry Christmas from all at Mister Print & Freedom

page 22

that a suitable second access is available in the event of any future emergencies. For that reason José intends to pursue the matter further. As it stands at the moment the rules governing the use of the Cultural Centre prohibit any commercial use of the facility and this therefore prohibits any organizations that impose any fees on their patrons. This restriction has denied the benefits of the facility to a number of recreational groups and after a CRA approach to the council it seems hopeful that the present constraints might eventually be eased to a degree that will allow greater use. It has been suggested by the CRA’s José Navarro that a charging structure as that operated for the street market could be adopted. At the moment the task of managing the centre rests on the shoulders of the CRA but we would not agree however to be involved in the collection of any fees that the council would require to be paid for the usage. The extent of the time and effort that takes place in the association’s administrational background is probably not widely appreciated. As well as being involved in meetings and phone calls with various individuals and groups, the chairman alone is regularly in receipt of an average of over 200 e-mails in any one month. However this was greatly surpassed during October when a grand total of 1,130 appeared in Bob’s inbox. Also the CRA website needs considerable attention and no little expertise from committee member Jackie Drewe who also acts in the capacity of Membership Secretary. Duties such as bookings for the Cultural Centre are undertaken by Ernie Prior and looking after the associations finances falls to Sandy Allison. Then there is of course

www.thecamposoljournal.com

also the important function of Secretary and someone has to compile this and other articles for inclusion in several media outlets. Additionally the shared responsibilities associated with the manning both the CRA cabin and the emergency phone should not be overlooked. To further emphasise this personal commitment, members of the CRA committee together with a few (too few,) dedicated volunteers armed with clipboards and petitions could be found a few weeks ago busily collecting signatures on Camposol. It was felt by the CRA that when considering the number of residents from Camposol and the surrounding area that will be eligible to vote at the next municipal election, this warranted an approach to the Mayor requesting that Camposol Cultural Centre to be designated as a polling station. Snr Campillo pointed out that this would have to be decided by the Spanish Government and the Regional electoral office. He further stated that it would be helpful to collect signed petitions with the undertaking that the Council would then submit them to the appropriate bodies. Should this effort be successful it is hoped that a more accessible voting location will encourage a greater participation by residents this then increasing the chances of an administration that is sympathetic to the needs of the urbinization. It’s the time of the year when we like to take the opportunity to wish all those connected with Camposol a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. This month we have come up with some ideas for using up your Christmas leftovers

Recipes Turkey stir fry

Turkey pot pie

Ingredients For the filling 1 tbsp vegetable oil 100g/3½oz smoked bacon lardons 1 onion, sliced 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 carrots, chopped 200g/7oz roast turkey, shredded 100g/3½oz cooked prawns, peeled 1 red chili, chopped 1 tbsp tomato purée 100ml/3½oz chicken stock 1 free range egg, beaten for egg wash 250g/10oz shortcrust pastry Preparation method Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the bacon lardons until crisp. Remove the lardons using a slotted spoon and set aside. In same pan, fry the onions and garlic for 5-6 minutes, or until golden-brown and softened. Add the remaining ingredients, except the egg and pastry. Bring the mixture to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes. Set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 5. Divide the mixture between four individual pie dishes. Cut the pastry into four pieces, each big enough to cover the pie dish. Brush the edge of each dish with egg wash and cover with the pastry. Trim any excess pastry and brush the lid with the remaining egg wash. Cook for 20-25 minutes until the lid is crisp and golden-brown.

3. Add the garlic, chilli and ginger into the oil that remains in the wok and stir-fry for about 2 minutes. Add the turkey meat, bamboo shoots and chopped leftover veg to the wok. Add the sesame oil and soy sauce and finally the spring onions, coriander and lime juice. Continue to stir-fry for another three minutes or until all the liquid is evaporated and the turkey is nice and glossy. Toss well and remove from the pan, but keep warm.

Ingredients For the stir fry 2 tbsp vegetable oil 500 g leftover turkey, thinly sliced 250 g bamboo shoots 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1 red chilli 2 cm ginger, finely sliced 1 tbsp sesame oil 2 tbsp soy sauce, plus a splash for noodles A bunch of spring onions, sliced A small bunch of coriander, chopped Leftover vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, sprouts, chopped 1 lime, cut into wedges For the garnish 2 tbsp vegetable oil 100 g turkey fat, sliced into strips 1 lime, cut into wedges

4. For the noodles: Blanch the noodles for 2-3 minutes in a large pan of boiling salted water, until just tender. Drain well and set aside.

For the crispy noodles 225 g egg noodles tbsp groundnut oil Buy Ingredients at mySupermarket More information Method 1. For the stir fry: Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan at a high heat until it’s beginning to smoke. Add the turkey and bamboo shoots and stir-fry for about three minutes, then remove from the wok and set aside.

7. Remove from the pan and drain on kitchen paper. Place the noodles in the middle of a warm plate and spoon the turkey stir fry and reserved turkey fat on top. Add a squeeze of lime juice and serve with lime wedges.

5. Heat a frying pan over a high heat. Add 1½ tablespoons of the groundnut oil. Evenly spread the drained noodles over the base of the pan then turn the heat to low, add a splash of sesame oil and allow the noodles to gently fry for 4-5 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp on the bottom. 6. Gently flip the noodles over, adding another 1½ tablespoons of the groundnut oil to the pan. Cook for a further 3-4 minutes, or until the noodles are goldenbrown and crisp all over.

2. For the garnish: Heat the oil in a pan and fry the turkey fat until crispy. Remove and set aside.

Yet another enormous dinner followed that evening but there was a distinct lack of racing from Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Now I’ve yet to ‘do’ a Spanish Christmas, or in this instance I should really say a Christmas in Spain, as I’m sure in the English speaking communities it’s quite a different affair more in keeping with the Ghost of Christmas past. I’ve ‘done one’ in the Maldives, and spent the run up to the big day wondering if we were going to see any sign of it at all, what with them unlikely to be celebrating what most of the Western World would be. My fears were unfounded as around midday on Christmas Eve we saw the signs of fairy lights being strung through the trees, and other tinsel-glorified items appeared along with Santa on a Surfboard arriving with his bag of gifts around 6pm, followed by Ice Swans sailing gracefully (or so it seemed) around fully laden buffet tables. It all appeared like magic; our only disappointment was a lack of crackers to pull;-we’d taken a couple in the luggage but they were confiscated at the airport; this was long before the days of 50ml of liquid and no tweezers allowed began, and hugely disappointing. Not to worry, on Christmas morning we opened the one gift each we’d managed to squeeze within the weight limit, and went diving instead. Yes, we donned our Santa hats, held in place by mask straps, and headed to the ocean floor in search of a Christmas tree the dive guide had sunk down there somewhere, tied with red ribbons and tags which once removed could be traded in, back on the boat, for all sorts of trifling souvenirs. Every man and his Moray Eel was searching for what appeared to be the previous year’s greenery (it looked a bit brown and branchless) but on surfacing, brightly coloured fish stickers, printed fishy plastic stamping devices and German dive log books began appearing from within the folds of wrapping paper and it was all highly delightful in a five-yearold-opening-his-stocking-and-finding-aplastic-soldier sort of way.

page 28

We did manage Three Kings Day in Spain this year, although with the lack of an anticipated local parade, we ended up heading up to Aledo, that atmospheric walled town on the cliff tops near Totana, and managed to catch probably the oldest play in Spain, performed in the streets and off balconies; it was quite majestic despite the lack of (crisis) camels, but I really felt the stable lads holding the horses could at least have worn a blanket and a belt instead of standing there looking like they’d raided the Decathlon sporting daywear department. Still, it made for an interesting afternoon, followed by a grand dinner in a popular restaurant at el Puerto de Mazarron. Very different, this concept of the kids getting their gifts a couple of days before returning to school,-I couldn’t wait that long before tearing the wrapping off my seasonal bag of swag. Feliz Navidad! Dawn Llewellyn-Price

Stars over Camposol

with Keith Jackson December sees the return of one of the finest, most conspicuous, and most recognizable constellations in the night sky - the constellation of Orion the Hunter. Orion is a large prominent constellation located along the celestial equator and is therefore visible throughout the world. It is perhaps easiest to identify Orion for the first time by looking for the three bright stars known as Orion’s Belt. This asterism is easy to spot because the stars are almost perfectly aligned, equally spaced and of similar brightness. Accompanying Orion are his two hunting dogs Canis Major (the Great Dog) and Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog). Sirius in Canis Major is the brightest star in the night sky, famous the world over for its sparkling beauty. Only the Moon, Venus and Jupiter (which are planets) are the only objects that ever appear brighter than Sirius. Along with Sirius, Procyon (in Canis Minor) and Betelgeuse (the red supergiant in Orion) form an asterism known as the Winter Triangle. (Summer Triangle in the Southern Hemisphere) The Winter Triangle is very easy to locate by naked

www.thecamposoljournal.com

eye, if you find Betelgeuse on Orion’s shoulder, then follow a direction down from Orion’s Belt and you will be looking at sparkling Sirius. Now trace a ‘V’ upwards to the next brightest star Procyon, and then continue the line back to Betelgeuse to complete the triangle.

The Ancient Egyptians were the first to write about Orion, and place him into their mythologies. They associate the stars of Orion with Osiris, the sun-god of rebirth and the afterlife, and one of the most important gods of the ancient Egyptians. Orion was considered the abode of Osiris following his resurrection. Isis dwelt on Sirius. In Egyptian mythology, Osiris was murdered and dismembered by his jealous brother, Seth, then briefly brought back to life by his sister and consort Isis to father the god Horus. About five millennia ago in ancient Egypt the New Year was marked by the dawn rising of Sirius (known as Sothis to the ancient Egyptians) whose appearance was connected with the annual flood that caused the Nile waters to rise, spreading out in shallow lakes along its banks to deposit fertile soil and renew the fields for abundant crops.

Out and About

With Rod Sawyer

Go Mad had a real junket on Saturday October 13th. They held it at the new centre on Country Club. This is a really splendid new venue offering space and light! Its right by the entrance to the community centre so parking is not an issue. I suspect we will see more of our charities using this splendid place. It clearly demonstrates what can be done with an entity. It certainly puts Camposol to shame! Given the sizes, and the fact that an entity on Camposol could collect from the hotel, golf club, and absentee owners such as MASA, then Camposol should have a marble palace! Country Club are to be congratulated on their vision!

The evening was run by Barrington, a splendid compere and redoubtable singer. He sang his heart out, and the dance floor was crowded with dancers, including me, for the first time in three years. You could

have chicken and chips as an extra, but many chose just the music. There were two sessions of Nearly Bassey, the first all

Bassey and the second more general. She was followed by Gerry Jones, as yep, Sir Tom Jones. He had all Tom’s theatrical tricks off pat, and of course was covered in knickers at an appropriate point. The evening was crowned with the most stupendous run of raffle prizes which took the best part of half an hour to draw! There must have been nearly 80 prizes. Amanda and Co deserve real plaudits.

Their Christian dedication to the work, and their splendid ability to organise a show, make them the tops!

With our best friend here we have been out and about more than usual. On Sunday we decided to have lunch in the port, Spanish style and went to a Spanish restaurant set in a gym! which is near the Bolnuevo roundabout. If approaching from Mazarron turn left, go past the waste land and turn immediately left again. It is sign posted. It’s a sport complex with swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and a restaurant. The restaurant offers the same deal everyday except weekdays its 8 Euros, Saturday its 10 Euros and Sunday its 12 Euros! You get an excellent salad to start, two of the party had spag bol; as a primero, one quite liked it the other didn’t. The main feature then came, a choice of fried fish or a BBQ dish of meat. The meat was all chicken pieces, and a bit disappointing. 12 Euros a bit steep, a weekday 8 nearer the mark. You get a drink thrown in and the wine was OK. The service is excellent and the young lady speaks good English, the boss is very jolly! It has a pleasant ambiance, except we found the flies a menace.

Merry Christm as from Debbie

Our best meal so far was on Camposol. Alley Palais restaurant has Anton as chef, and a delightful young waitress. Its intimate and friendly. Wednesday they do a 9.95 menu del noche, but their a la carte menu is also good value for money. We had spare ribs. They were well cooked and succulent. One of us had the prawn & chicken stir fry with rice, which I tasted and thought excellent. Two of us had the

2012

house burgers and chips. Very, Very good! I finished with lemon & sugared pancake, which was again pretty good and certainly up to my Mum’s standard, which was pretty high! The Alley Palais bistro is a little gem and we have resolved to use it more, and the cost? Only 50 Euros for the three of us, which include a bottle of wine, two glasses of rose, three brandies and three coffees! Yes, we pushed the boat out. We could have spent more, and the steaks are to be recommended as is the seafood. On a cold Wednesday night we were fed up with the cold wintry weather that plagued us over the early part of last month. We decided that we needed to get out of the house and where better to go on a Wednesday night than to Restaurant Amapola in Bolnuevo? Every Wednesday Amapola have a fantastic “Happy Meal” Special offer where 2 people can dine for only 25€. We had a lovely 4 course meal while enjoying some live music. Smoked Salmon to start followed by a lovely red prawn bisque. For main course we both chose the Cod which was absolutely sublime. The chocolate desserts were also out of this world and as a self proclaimed choc-a-holic I was in heaven! We rounded the evening off with some brandies and settled down to enjoy the music. Well over 100 people were in attendance but, the service was slick and efficient and the food came out to our table like clockwork. For us visiting Amapaola is a not just going out for dinner, it’s a chance to enjoy a fine dining experience and we will most likely be joining them for on New Years Eve to see in 2013. Last Sunday we fancied a trip round to the golf club. As usual it was bustling but Jim and his wife Margaret managed to get us a table last minute. I was talking after the meal to a friend whose first visit it was. Like us he found it fantastic value. 12 Euros for lunch including homemade soup, your own choice of salad, a choice of meats and pie, with as much veg as you can eat, coupled with some very decent desserts, often my favourite Eton mess, really a mix of fruit of the forest, meringue and cream. Its a carvery, and one where there is real quality. I often feel that the veg suffer in a carvery, but not at the golf club. A fantastic Sunday Lunch had by all! Overall November was quite a busy month with friends visiting and us eating out, but then we were just getting practice in for the festive season where are sure to be dining out even more often! NEWS

LINDA BIGGS MEETING WITH DEPUTY MAYOR PACO GARCIA 13 NOVEMBER LINDA BIGGS REPORT ON MEETNG 13 NOVEMBER 2012 WITH DON FRANCISCO (PACO) GARCIA, who is the FIRST DEPUTY MAYOR, COUNCILLOR FOR TOWN PLANNING AND INFRASTRUCTURE BRIDGE TO SECTORS C & D I had some concerns as to who exactly would be carrying out the repairs to the Bridge to Sectors C&D and Paco reconfirmed that it is planned for the Council to execute these works as soon as the weather permits. The heavy rain has, as I am sure we all know, impeded the works to the Temporary Crossing of the Rambla which must of course be in place before the bridge can be closed to pedestrians for repairs. Paco is hoping that these rains will soon subside and the ground dry out sufficiently for the works to continue on the temporary crossing and then proceed to repairing the Bridge. I mentioned to Paco that I had noticed on their website that the Council has a programme for improving some of the Caminos of the various Pedanías and wondered whether the camino from D11 could be included in this and receive a coating of asphalt. Paco said that this camino had not been included in the budget for this year but that he hoped it could be included in next years budget, thus providing a good alternative route from D Sector. I posed the question asked by some residents as to whether this temporary crossing can remain in place for emergencies. Paco said that this crossing will have topping of asphalt to facilitate the expected traffic. The crossing will definitely be closed with the concrete barriers as before as soon as the repaired bridge is operational - for safety reasons this crossing cannot be left open and anyone who saw the volume of water in the rambla this year will understand why. As the crossing will have been asphalted unless unprecedented amounts of water enter the Rambla as has been seen this year and two years or so ago, this crossing could remain in tact for some time. If however the camino from D11 is asphalted next year then there should be no need to use this temporary Rambla crossing in the future.

SECTOR A - DAMAGE TO PAVEMENT AND ROAD IN DANGER AT CALLE COMPOSTELA DE SANTIAGO NEAR CALLE CUENCA. This section of road and pavement which bounds directly to the bank of the Rambla has been in a precarious position as reported to the Council, for about one year to eighteen months when the earth beneath the pavement and the very edge of the road was washed away perhaps (I think) because of a faulty storm drain at that very point which takes the surface water from the road. The repair of this “cavern” is on the list of works yet to be carried out on Sector A. I had received a phone call from a local resident at 8.30 yesterday morning to say that there had been a collapse leaving the local area in a dangerous condition. I immediately rang Paco Garcia who sent a Council Technician to assess the damage – barriers were immediately put in place by the Police to divert traffic from that side of the road. About 4 or 5 metres of whole pavement had fallen into the rambla bank, also the large drainage pipe that would have been connected to the concrete storm drain had fallen into the rambla. The road is weakened with cracks and slightly slanting at the edge towards the rambla - there appears to still be earth beneath the road itself. Paco confirmed today that these repairs are planned to be done next week, weather permitting of course – it is envisaged that at the same time the making good the damaged road left by Aqualia on the corner of Calle Cuenca will also be attended to. MASA The Council is still in communication with Masa to reach agreement on the cost of rectifying and installing the infrastructure for BCD - agreement for Sector A having already been reached earlier this year. As has been mentioned before, the Council are endeavoring to reach agreement with Masa as to the cost of bringing up to an acceptable standard Sectors B,C &D without resorting to a Court action. The cost for Sector A having been agreed as above and Masa released from the remaining portion of the guarantee that relates solely to

www.thecamposoljournal.com

Sector A. That is to say the remainder of guarantees applied to one Sector cannot be carried over to another – the amount claimed for any particular sector can only relate to the volume of works needed to complete that Sector. AQUALIA Aqualia are still working on the paperwork so that the residents of BCD have contracts direct with them instead of Justo y Manoli S.L. The bills for water supplied in the interim period will be calculated to cover a two or three month period, but split for easy payment so as not to cause hardship for the residents. RE3 ILLEGAL HOUSES The Council is still waiting for Masa to complete the formalities regarding the revised Projectos for these houses. Once this is done the Council will be in a position to issue the new building licenses thus legalizing these houses. D32 TURISTICOS The Council is working with Masa to legally change the designation of this poligono from Turistico to Residential and regrettably this is taking longer than thought.

How many dogs does it take to change a lightbulb?

GOLDEN RETRIEVER: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb? BORDER COLLIE: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. DACHSHUND: You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp! ROTTWEILER: Make me. LAB: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?

‘B Clean’ Gardening Group.

Working together to keep Camposol looking great! An Urgent Plea! Now that the heat of the summer months has passed on by, we find ourselves once again returning to face the challenge of the weekly routine; doing whatever we can to keep our community areas looking great. Unfortunately our numbers have continued to deplete over the past year, despite our appeals for more help. The sad truth we are facing is this - there are currently so few of us we are concerned that very soon we will no longer be able to continue as an organised group and B Clean will disband. Our survival as a group is not up to us – If you live on B sector it is up to you! In order to continue to function we do need support – especially physical. There is much that still needs to be done: The work that we have already carried out needs ongoing maintenance and there are more projects that we would like to start. Whilst we know many people keep the areas around their own poligonos tidy, there are some areas which are common to all of Camposol and this is particularly true on B Sector. It will not be long before the weeds

start taking control of the road edges and footpaths and invading those areas that we have worked so hard on to improve. Soon , we will also need to start pruning and spraying the Palm Trees in the Sector. Happily it is good to see that most of the Oleander shrubs have survived the hot summer and the recent rain seems to have given them a sudden spurt in growth. What we need now is a sudden spurt of growth in enthusiastic helpers! So please – if you are able to help out in any way by giving up a bit of time, we would love to hear from you. Legal Registration – progress. We have now engaged the services of a Spanish Solicitor to proceed with the arrangements necessary for B Clean to become a Legally Registered Community Group. Details of the advantages of this arrangement will be circulated to all B Sector residents by an information sheet we intend to deliver shortly. Petanca Garden – You may have noticed the great work carried out over the past few months by a couple of our residents who have created a wonderful petanca garden on the corner ground opposite to B22 and B15. This project has been privately funded by the gentlemen concerned but is available for use by anyone living on B Sector. There is still some work to be done before it is finally completed and B Clean have agreed to

provide shrubs and plants to make this an even more enjoyable facility. Enquiries regarding use of this area should be made to Maurice. Tel: 968199552 or email: mauricepat@hotmail.com Fund Raising. Because there are so many organised functions being held at peak holiday times we have decided to arrange our next function a little later in the Newyear as follows: New Year Fun Night – On Friday 11th January we intend to hold an evening of food and fun at the Golf Club. Music provided by Woody. Details will be available shortly and tickets will be 5€ with food available from the menu for those who require it. All proceeds will go to the community garden needs. Monthly Meetings. We hold a planning meeting on the last Tuesday of each month 16.00 to 17.00. in Trevi’s Function Room. Please show up and give your support. Join in and discuss how we can continue to improve our sector. Weekly Working Party. Meets each Tuesday – 9 a.m. till 10/11 ish. Usually in front of the commercial centre unless otherwise arranged. Please just turn up and help. Information: Please contact: Sandy: 968 986 030 Helen/Glyn: 968 199 506 Roger: 968 199 502

D GARDENING AND COMMUNITY GROUP NOVEMBER REPORT During the month of October our Friday morning sessions did continue but with a very reduced number of volunteers coming out to help with general weeding and tidying up around our D area. On two Fridays we managed a grand total of 6 weeders and on one Friday we had 9 volunteers out and about cleaning up the mud and silt around a small number of known problem areas. We had decided to continue our work with four main projects of creating garden/ sitting areas such as can be seen dotted our lovely D. With the lack of volunteers and despite numerous and exhaustive attempts to recruit new volunteers we are finding it difficult to commence these projects. The committee have discussed this issue at length and will report our recommendation at our Yearly Meeting in December. 500 newsletters distributed on the dual carriage before the Gota Frio, appeals on our website, reps canvassing produced one phone call from residents in the D11 area who wished us to fund a garden area with local neighbours carrying out the work. This was agreed and garden was created but unfortunately part of it was at the exact spot at the top of the D11 dual carriageway where the first temporary road was built by the council. No problems said the residents; we will wait until everything settles down and sort

it out. This volunteer situation is serious however the residents of D continue with their generosity at the “buckets” which are now situated at to exits of D. Thanks to all the bucketeers who have continued with their very appreciated help for D. On a very positive note, the effects of the closed bridge has brought out the very best in a very large number of our residents. Personally and I have this confirmed by many; I have met and made many new friends through such activities as giving lifts, helping neighbours with shopping, keeping an eye on our elderly etc etc. It has also meant that many people have actually experienced firsthand the art of walking further than their front door. We now have a community bursting with anewed energy and possible potential future Olympians. My purchase of electric bikes has proved invaluable. Our website was one of the many informative media that contained photographs of the Gota Fria and many photographs of the bridge and rambla road, thanks to Steve and our other David Bailey’s. The change to the second temporary road generated a great many comments on numerous different sites but our committee ‘s only involvement was to produce a couple of signs for the roads requesting that residents didn’t steal the produce and drove slowly.

Sports A Good Workman Never Blames His Tools

By John Brown

When I was growing up, my mother used to tell me with great pride that ‘A good workman never blames his tools!’ I don’t really know why she said this so often? In all my years living at home, I cannot recall ever once saying that ‘this screwdriver is bent!’ or ‘this chisel is s**t!’ to which she might reasonably have quoted the proverb? Imagine that you are the best craftsman of your generation. No one else is close. Then along comes a Japanese tool-maker and makes you an offer. ‘I will pay you the fortune of a lifetime (well 20 million dollars a year for 10 years) to change your tools.’ It’s a bit like a Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. ‘Take these magic beans and you will find much gold at the end of the beanstalk!’ I’m old enough to remember when Ian Woosnam changed his tools. He was world number one golfer in 1992 and he was playing with Maxfli clubs. He changed to Maruman clubs and very soon faded from dominance. It could have been his clubs, or it could have been his age, but nevertheless he faded away, consoled perhaps with the extra gold that Maruman gave him for changing his tools. The moral of this story may be that a good workman sticks with the tools that got him there in the first place? Fast forward to 1996. Tiger Woods is world number one. He has won 7 Majors he is highly marketable, and he uses Titleist clubs very successfully. Along comes a newcomer to club manufacturing (Nike) with a multi-million dollar a year contract. Woods collected 40 million dollars (£25m) for a five-year contract with Nike in 1996. When that was extended in 2001, the value had increased to 105 million dollars (£66m) At that time Nike didn’t make irons, but they used Tiger as a development expert. His form dipped over the next two years. When he added the change to the Nike Driver his accuracy from the tee also dipped. With the Nike driver, he was struggling, and he changed back to the Titleist driver for a

page 35

while. Then he started to win again. In fact he has won as often with Nike clubs as he did with Titleist. Fast-forward again to October 2012. There is a new world number one – Rory McIlroy, and a resurgent number two – Tiger Woods. What do you do when you win your second Major at the tender age of 23? Well, you dump your girl-friend, you sell your local house in Northern Ireland and move to Florida, you sack your manager Chubby Chandler, you sack your caddy, and finally you sack your coach. At the time of changing his manager, Rory said that he expected the Horizon Sports Management Company to offer him more marketing opportunities. Rory felt that he should be making a big step-up in his image rights as well as his performances. Horizon Sports management must have been over the moon when they came to Rory with the proposed deal. He has been offered the chance to pay Nike clubs instead of Titleist clubs, with the small incentive of between 20 and 25 million dollars every year for the next 10 years! McIlroy currently has career earnings of roughly £15m at the age of just 23. A deal with Nike would cement an earnings status far beyond that of any other European golfer, though leaving him still a long way short of Woods. Despite Woods falling from grace in the intervening years, his Nike deal is not thought to have decreased. Interestingly, joint marketing of McIlroy and Woods could actually prove beneficial to both players.

after the string of revelations about his personal life which led to the American losing other endorsements. The episode did, however, cause embarrassment given the brand’s career-long association with Woods. Nike was also wounded by the jailing of the NFL player Michael Vick for his part in a dog-fighting scene and, more recently, witnessed the fall from grace of Lance Armstrong. Both those figures held highprofile Nike sponsorships. What has swayed McIlroy’s decision? It has to be the money doesn’t it, although he was doing all right previously? I suspect that they blinded him with science and technology. I think that they promised him that they could improve his results and his accuracy and / or length off the tee by using their clubs. No doubt they said, ‘ here, take one home with you for nothing, and just try it out. If you don’t like it just bring it back next time you are in town!’ The challenge for Titleist is clear. How can they hold on to their best talent in the face of sponsors with more money, even though they have a superior product? Either by paying the best players more money, or by continuously improving the products. They have the number one golf ball, they sponsor a large number of professionals, they have a large following, and they are American. So watch this space. Will Rory fall from grace with his new Nike clubs or will he make a big step-up? Only time will tell.

Nike was also in need of an injection of clean-cut into their group. McIlroy holds obvious appeal to Nike and is generally regarded as infinitely marketable because of his clean-cut image and apparent inability to court controversy, his oncourse performances aside. Despite his relationship with the tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, who is sponsored by Adidas, McIlroy has avoided negative publicity as his career has blossomed. Nike stuck by Woods

There is only one truly great Christmas story, that of the tale of Nazareth, a stable and a baby. There are others! Can anybody not fall in love with Dickens Scrooge? Some of the best parts ever written for the serious comedy actor! My favourite story is not a story! It is a true account of a remarkable Christmas occurrence. I first heard when I was very little. Grandad, who brought me up had a Sunday routine. We always had a roast beef dinner, at lunch time of course, always beautifully cooked and carved at the table. When it was just Grandad and me, after we had washed up, especially in the Winter time, we would settle down as it got dark, in front of a roaring fire, to Grandad’s stories. When I was little he invented Percy who lived up the chimney. Since Grandad could throw his voice, and whenever he did so, his mouth didn’t move, but the silver plate which covered much of the top of his head, where he had his skull blown apart by a German shell,

Then off to play golf at Altareal we were split into seven groups of three playing Texas scramble tee off time was 11.10 am although due to a group in front using the course as a pitch and putt the round took over 5 hours ,but we could all see the funny side especially after a pint or four.

used to move round! This was always scary and fascinating. He never much talked about the war, which he had seen from 1914 as a regular, right through until he was nearly blown apart three days before the armistice. As far as Grandad was concerned he hated anything to do with the upper classes or war, or anything German! He never bought a poppy! The story I remember best was true one. It was Christmas 1914, the front had stabilised itself and both sides were settling down to the war to end all wars, one which could and did kill or maim millions of young men on both sides. It was very cold that Christmas, with little joy in the front lines. At his point in the lines, the opposing trenches were only a couple of hundred yards apart. The two sides used to barrack each other something rotten. If you could provoke each other then it could give one of your snipers an opportunity! It was not just cold, the trenches were full of mud, there was a stench of dead bodies, unburied in front of the trenches on the barbed wire. Bloated rats inhabited the dug outs, food was cold and out of a tin, and tobacco was at a premium. They had had Christmas parcels on Christmas Eve, along with some post. Grandad had got a lovely letter from my Gran, along with a parcel with tinned plum duff, Christmas pudding to

you! And, pipe tobacco! Christmas day had dawned bleak, cold but no rain, sleet or even snow. A chill wind and a watery sun. After breakfast one of the Welshmen, there were a dozen in the battalion, asked permission of Grandad, then a Sergeant Major, to sing some carols. Permission was granted a Welsh voice broke out over the trenches, singing, as Granddad remembers it, Come All Ye faithful. This was listened to in silence. When finished, three others joined the Welshman in another lilting carol. At the end there were cries and claps from the opposing trenches. Then a baritone German voice started singing Silent Night. Everyone clapped this, and both sides joined in the next one! Soon singing was going on along the entire front, for miles. Just where Grandad was a white flag appeared above the opposing parapet and a German voice was heard saying, “Christmas truce, English” A head popped up and was not shot up and a Corporal from Grandad’s battalion scrambled up the front of the trench without his rifle and lifted his arms to heaven in the open. Soon he was joined by first a trickle of men, and then everyone from both sides. Fraternisation became the order of the day. Officers joined their men. The war machine stopped in its tracks for nearly the whole

day. They sang carols played football and talked. Granddad met a giant sized German NCO, and granddad was no midget himself! They talked about home, families, wives, smoked Grandads cigars, and Grandad gave Fritz some tobacco and his tobacco tin as a present. He was given the same in exchange. They exchanged addresses and told each other that when the madness was over they would meet. I had that tin, Grandad passed it onto me, until during one of my wife’s periodic clean outs the battered relic disappeared. Sadly the day soon came to an end and both side retired to their dugouts. It was a quiet night, but any hope of real truce disappeared in a morning barrage by the artillery of both sides. Business went back to the usual. It would be lovely to say that after the war they met up. Sadly granddad did write to the address after the war but got no reply, and never heard anything himself. The incident is catalogued. Is remembered. Amongst all that horror and inhumanity, for a time of Christ’s Day, Christ was remembered by two sides both of whom were equally convinced that God was on their side. Rod Sawyer

Seat Ibiza ST SE 1.4 There has been a lot of talk about Volkswagen’s strategy for its mainstream brands, Skoda and Seat. The Czech company can seemingly do no wrong, with growing sales and a range of desirable models, whereas the Spanish firm seems to be lacking direction. Wasn’t Seat supposed to be the VW Group’s stylish and sporty brand, with Skoda catering for the value-for-money end of the market? This mini estate version of the Ibiza offers plenty more in the way of luggage capacity than the five-door hatchback on which it’s based, yet it feels rather old-fashioned inside, simple, almost austere, like previous generation Skodas in fact. In contrast, Seat’s latest styling gives it a smart, crisp appearance. Look beyond the badging, however, and there’s plenty to like about this estate. It costs £710 more than a 1.4 SE hatchback yet provides 430 litres of luggage space with the rear seats upright and a useful 1,164 litres with them folded flat. The hatch has 292/554 litres. There are some great practical touches, too, such as the little tray under the parcel shelf to store small items that would otherwise roll around the boot. As you might expect from a VW Group product, there’s a quality feel throughout but it’s as if the latest trends in tactile interiors have passed Seat by – or they were deemed too expensive for inclusion by VW’s feared cost accountants. There’s acres of dull but obviously durable plastics, while the satnav mount atop the facia looks like an afterthought. The load bay is massive for such a small car, and its proximity to the ground is a boon when hauling heavy items aboard. It was easier to fit a non-

folding electric bicycle into the Seat than other larger, far more expensive cars. With only 83bhp, the 1.4-litre, 16-valve

Seat Ibiza ST

engine is a bit breathless at low revs, but sufficiently nippy on the move. It trickles along in heavy traffic without protest, as low as 1,000rpm in third gear, but you’ll need to change to second for any meaningful acceleration. The official EU Combined economy is 47.9mpg (Urban 35.3mpg), with 139g/km of CO2 meaning Band E taxation of £120 per year. Potentially the Ibiza ST makes a fine weekday workhorse with space aplenty for carrying bicycles and assorted paraphernalia at the weekend. The only problem is in the form of Skoda’s similar Fabia Estate. With a peppy 1.2-litre TSI unit providing similar power to the Seat, it costs £315 less. The Ibiza is by no means a bad car but in this cut-throat market it’s not quite good enough. The fact that you can buy a more desirable Skoda more cheaply says it all. Porsche will halt weekend production of two-seater sports cars at its biggest plant next year as Europe’s deepening debt crisis is eroding demand for luxury vehicles, company sources said. Porsche will limit the working week to five days at its headquarter factory in Zuffenhausen, Germany, from January, the sources said on Monday on condition they not be identified because the matter is confidential.

www.thecamposoljournal.com

Porsche has been running eight extra shifts at the factory on Saturdays since September to clear orders for the revamped 911 model. The number of Porsche 911, Boxster and Cayman vehicles assembled in Zuffenhausen and destined for austeritystrapped European markets will drop 10.7 percent next year to 14,543 cars, according to research firm IHS Automotive. “Weak demand can be traced all over the premium market,” said London-based Credit Suisse analyst Erich Hauser. “Europe is in the doldrums. Driving pure amusement cars is clearly becoming less desirable in difficult times.” Rival luxury-car makers are also taking steps to address weak demand. Daimler said last month it has cut production of its flagship S-Class sedan until the next version of the model is ready to debut in mid-2013. VW’s Audi luxury division twice shuttered its plant in Neckarsulm for a week each time in early and late October, disrupting production of high-end models, including the flagship A8 sedan and the R8 sports car. Porsche is also considering shaving one hour off the regular eight-hour shift in Zuffenhausen from January, one source said. The car maker currently runs two shifts per day at the plant which makes about 170 vehicles a day. A Porsche spokesman said the manufacturer’s production system “allows for extremely flexible operation”, enabling the car maker to cut or boost output depending on market demand. Porsche said on Monday that global sales

jumped almost a quarter in October to 11,688 cars and sport-utility vehicles, with huge double-digit gains in China and the United States more than offsetting a 4.5 percent drop in European deliveries. The company is aiming to boost annual deliveries to over 200,000 vehicles by 2018 and expand to seven model lines from four which also include the Panamera coupe and Cayenne SUV, Porsche’s best-selling model. Production of the new Macan compact SUV will start late next year. There are no plans as yet for scaling back production in Leipzig, Germany, where demand for the Cayenne has just allowed Porsche to extend a newly introduced

third shift by another six months, the officials said. The Leipzig plant makes about 480 cars a day

About five blocks from the party the police pull him over for weaving all over the road, ask him to get out of the car and take the breathalyser test. Wishing a merry Christmas and a happy new year to all our customers

Property, Financial and Legal CHRISTMAS MESSAGE Yes - its that time of year again ! I would like to extend to all my clients past and future all good wishes for the Christmas Season and the New Year – Feliz Navidad! For a lot of us this is a wonderful time of year – when we will be with our friends and families and partaking of the usual Christmas festivities. Goodwill to all men being the theme – although it can be a time of mixed feelings and a time of great loneliness for some people without family or friends. So its an opportunity for us to impart goodwill and think of those less fortunate than ourselves. This time of year also gives us an opportunity for reflection – how we spent Christmases past and how different it is now we are living in Spain. Maybe you go back to see your family or perhaps you split the Christmas and New Year into two parts so that you can divide your time on both sides of the water. It can be a good opportunity to think about your legal and financial affairs and make arrangements to put them in order or at least to make a list addressing your concerns. These issues could involve anything at all ie property, Wills (Spanish or UK) tax or pension issues. I

would urge you, for example, to look at your existing Wills and to ask whether they reflect your current wishes and circumstances. Maybe you are looking to buy or sell property and want information regarding the process; maybe something has changed in your circumstances and you need to make a new Will; maybe you want advice on your tax responsibilities as a property owner here in Spain; or need advice regarding a private pension plan which you still hold in the UK. New rental law coming The Government has presented a project for a new law aiming at reinforcing the rights of the owners relative to tenants. The proposal must first be passed in Parliament before it can become law. However, in the presentation, the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, stressed the need for increasing the letting market, which in Spain accounts for only 17% of all dwellings, compared with 30% in the rest of Europe. She also hoped that the reform would bring some of the 700,000 unsold dwellings into use, together with some of the 3 million privately owned homes not being used. The Minister stressed the need for reducing rental prices, by guaranteeing the security of owners. It is her intention to create fiscal advantages for owners wanting to let and a reduction in the time needed to evict non-paying tenants, to 10 days. Furthermore, a tenant will not be able to protest against the sale of a dwelling, unless the letting contract is registered in the property register. The so called ‘prorroga obligatoria’ (the enforced extension of a letting) shall be reduced from 5 to 3 years.

This is a measure, in terms of flexibility and ease, to create a company and what the report shows is that there are many less developed countries than Spain where it is much easier to take that step. Recently, the story of a entrepreneur from Seville appeared in the Spanish media, where he recounted the ordeal of three years and 10,000 € spent in paperwork in four different administrations (local, provincial, regional and national) to open a business in the town of Vejer, situated in a region with one of the highest unemployment rate of the whole of Europe. The difficulty of starting a business is still the main drag on the overall ranking of ‘ease of doing business’, in which Spain is still placed at 44th, behind Peru and ahead of Colombia, in a list that is topped by Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the USA and Denmark, which repeat in the top five.

That is only one of the parameters that the World Bank report takes into account when assessing the position of the different countries in the ‘ease of doing Merry Christmas from all at Paramount

Valencia drops 46 public companies In a desperate effort to find a balance between expenses and income, the Valencia Government has decided to cut by 46 its public companies, to 25, meaning that forty percent of its 7,555 employees will be dismissed. The Government hopes the move will save 315 million euros.

It also reports that the average income of Spanish families was 24,609 euros in 2011, 1.9% down on 2010. The demand for independence from Spain is increasing in Catalonia and may become the central issue in the regional elections next month. The ‘Illegal Houses’ of Chiclana

By Lenox Napier

There is a town in Cádiz in which half of its nearly 80,000 inhabitants live in illegal homes: and the Housing Councillor resides in one of them. The city is Chiclana and it is trapped in a legal limbo. The Town Plans have had to return to an urban 1987 standard because the courts annulled all subsequent General Plans and thus Chiclana can’t legally sign any new licenses of occupation. Marisol Ayala, the councillor of urban planning, came to the Town Hall from a small local party that represents stressed owners of ‘illegal homes’ and whose program called for amnesty for these buildings, reductions

in the fines and the legalization of these properties at the minimum cost. Ayala, born in Villambistia (Burgos), settled in Chiclana a decade ago. She came with her husband and son and bought a house in an urbanisation built on land that was listed as ‘non-urbanisable’. Although her home is no longer subject to any sanctions, having been prescribed, there remains a myriad of problems. It has no running water, sewage or electricity. Like this one, there are another 15,000 homes in Chiclana. But Ayala has failed those neighbours who voted for her, according to Joaquín González, the current spokesman for Ayala’s PVRE independent party tied to the ruling PP. ‘Since the elections, she hasn’t met with us a single time and hasn’t proposed a single investment for our streets’, he says.

‘We are as before or worse,’ he adds. And repeating the speech once made by the now councillor of urbanismo, he says: ‘We are second-class neighbors when it comes to receive services, but first-class when the IBI (rates) are collected’. He feels that Ayala, a toothless wolf in charge of the urban sheep, has forgotten her voters, in this legal limbo called Chiclana. This clearly indicates that we are not the only ones!
