Dear Readers, Welcome to your action packed, fun filled, festive edition of The Journal! I say this every year, but I really can’t believe that we are at the end of yet another year! I suppose time flies when you are having fun in the sun! By the time that you are reading this the month of Movember will be over and I will have my face back to myself and be moustached no more! While having a moustache was uncomfortable at times, one imagines that prostate cancer would be much more uncomfortable, and that is why we took part to help raise awareness for this great cause. At the time of going to print, we are about halfway through Movember, so you will be able to read more about it in the January magazine. We hope that 2013 has been as kind to you as it has to us. For us it has been hard, but rewarding. We have increased our distribution footprint, welcomed on board fantastic new writers, increased the quality of our content and of course, won an industry award. We are quite happy with that for a year’s achievement! To all of our readers we would like to say a massive thank you for all your support throughout 2013, for reading the magazine and giving us your feedback each month. It means the world to us, and knowing what we are doing right, and what we could be doing better helps us to make the magazine better for everyone. Wellspring Victory Church
Once again the Wellspring victory church are presenting a series of Christmas carol concerts around Camposol. This is the fourth year that the concerts have taken place and have become a popular and well loved seasonal event. There is always something new to entertain as well as the more traditional carols. Mince pies, mulled wine and other goodies are served during the concert for which there is no charge. The locations are as follows with a start time of 6.30pm for each. EVERYBODY will be most welcome to attend any or all of the concerts, we even supply carol sheets with words just in case you don’t remember all of them. We look forward to seeing old and new friends alike for a little bit of traditional Christmas cheer.
The reform of the Traffic and Road Safety Law presented towards the end of June has finally been approved by the Government. Penalties for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are high, the speed limit will be increased to 130km/h on certain stretches of the motorway and wearing a helmet will become obligatory for all cyclists under the age of 18 on all roads. The draft bill of this new law has been approved after seeking further advice and opinions from experts and ministers of road safety and health. Reports from the Higher Council on Road Safety and the Association for the Study of Spinal Cord Injuries were considered. Drugs It will continue to be illegal to drive under the influence of drugs, but there is an exception in the case of prescribed medication and for rehabilitation purposes. However, this is only provided that the vehicle driver “is fit enough� to handle the vehicle “with the due diligence and care established by the law�. The new law does not aim to penalise those addicted to drugs that are on medication to wean them off these substances. If it were a matter of continuing to drive or face a penalty if caught whilst on medication for drug addiction, some drivers would choose to suspend their medication, especially if driving was involved in their work. Otherwise, those caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will face a fine of 1,000 euro. This has been
increased from 500 euro. According to statistics, 47% of all deaths on the road were influenced by drugs or alcohol. Speed limit Drivers that exceed 150km/h will not only face an economic penalty but will also lose points on their licence. This is irrespective of the speed limit in the area that they are caught speeding. The law will allow drivers to circulate at 130km/h instead of 120km/h on certain stretches of motorway where road surface and climatic conditions are optimal. However, there is opposition to this measure from certain regional governments. Already, the Generalitat of Cataluùa has stated that it will not apply the new speed limit increase. The Basque Country has also voiced its disapproval of the law change. Running over animals A change in the draft law now states that liability for running over an animal will lie with the driver of the vehicle. This is except, however, when the animal is run over as a direct result of hunting. In this case, it will be the landowner’s responsibility. The only other exception to this is in cases where there should be more fencing or if signs are lacking or missing. Then, the motorway owner would face the penalties. Cyclists There was much debate and opposition when the idea that all cyclists wear a helmet at all times was proposed. The new law says that all cyclists under 18 years of age must wear a protective helmet at all times. As for adult cyclists, they must wear a helmet on all inter-urban roads.

British pensioners living in Spain or any other Euro zone country should be aware that from the end of January 2014 new EU regulations will be put in place regarding the payments of British pensions into banks abroad. There is no need to panic at this point. In due course, you should be contacted by the Department of Works and Pensions who will ask you to confirm your Spanish bank account details (if your pension is paid into a Spanish account). The reason for this is that the British department in charge of UK pensions will require an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC) in order to process and make payments to expats’ accounts in this country. The DWP does actually have these details for many expats living in foreign countries including Spain. For those whose details they don’t have yet, they will shortly receive a letter asking for this new information. If you do receive one of these letters, please be aware that the DWP will not ask for any extra details about your bank account; especially not passwords or other sensitive information. The reason for this new requirement is that there has been a change in EU regulations with the aim of making payments between all EU countries faster, more efficient and more secure. The British Embassy in Madrid asks all those who receive one of these letters, to fill out the form attached and return it as quickly as possible to the DWP. Your bank will be able to provide you with the IBAN and BIC numbers, but they are also located on your bank account statements. If you are unsure, it is best to ask at the bank in person. Failure to provide the DWP with this information could result in your pension and benefit entitlements being stopped. This is because after 31 January 2014, banks in the Euro zone countries will no longer be able to accept any DWP payments without the recipient’s IBAN and BIC numbers for their accounts. Note that it is only expatriates who live abroad and have their British pensions paid into a foreign account that will be affected by these new regulations. These changes will not concern expats living abroad whose pension is paid into a British bank account. Now is also a good time to let the DWP know if you have changed addresses or need them to update any other information.

Camposol and District Vote in Mazarrón Local Elections The aim of this article to demonstrate the importance of enrolling on the Mazarrón padron, registering an intention to vote in the next local election and then voting (May 2015) for a political party that will best represent the needs of Camposol and District within the next Mazarrón administration.
of Mazarrón at the time of the election Ideally, both these ratios should be as close as possible to 100%. Inspection of these graphs shows: Before 1999: Both graphs show average values of around 52% and 72% for the defined ratios. This implies a consistent voting pattern for these elections. After 1999:Both graphs show something different for the same ratios.A reduced average value of 35.5% and still showing a decreasing trend. A reduced average of 64.8% but fairly constant. Extrapolation of these graphs suggests estimates for the corresponding ratios
compared with the values for the same ratios over the previous six local elections. The very large decrease for the “valid votes/population” ratio can reasonably be associated with the large influx of foreigners. The inevitable inference is foreigners do not vote and Camposol’s history shows there are then unpalatable consequences. If the Camposol and District vote is significantly increased, then the prospect of more resources being allocated to Camposol will be greatly enhanced. Conclusion: The only way for foreigners (most of the Camposol and District population) to improve their representation on Mazarron Town Council and secure the benefits we want is: Enrol on the Padron Register an intention to vote at the 2015 Mazarrón local election (normally done at the same time as enrolling on the Padron) Cast a valid vote at the 2015 Mazarrón local election for candidates who are totally committed to making Camposol and District a better place.
The analysis in this article is based on information that is freely available from the Ministerio del Interior (Madrid) website. Data for all nine Mazarrón local elections covering the period 1979 to 2011 has been included in the analysis. There are two important ratios shown in the graph. Valid Votes/Censo ratio: The “censo” refers to number of people who had registered an intention to vote. The “valid vote” refers to the number of people whose vote counted (excludes spoilt papers etc). Valid Votes/Population ratio: The “population” refers the total population

after the 2015 Mazarrón local election, could be less than 30% and 65%, respectively. Analyses of these graphs can provide for some interesting comment and conclusions: Mainly Spanish Mazarroneros voted before 1999.Few foreigners.Mazarrón Population: 1979/10,351, 1983/10,270, 1987/13,160, 1991/14,275,1995/15,447, 1999/16,829 About 52% of the Mazarron population cast valid votes. About 72% of those registered to vote cast valid votes. Spanish and foreigners form Mazarrón population after 1999. Rapidly increasing number of foreigners. Mazarrón Population: 2003/23,025, 2007/30,841, 2011/35,464 About 35.5% of the Mazarrón population cast valid votes. About 64.8% of those registered to vote cast valid votes. Those who can demonstrate they own or rent property on Camposol and frequently reside in the Camposol and District area when they visit Spain are eligible to enrol on the Mazarrón padron. This includes most holiday home owners as well as those who permanently live in the area. Camposol and District residents can enrol on the padron by visiting Mazarrón Town Hall or, until further notice, on the second and last Friday of each month (10:00am to 12:00pm) at the Camposol Cultural Centre. Does it stop there – No. Thoughts go back to last Christmas where there were not enough matching chairs and the table was not big enough for all that lovely grub. The answer is a new table and chairs of course. The dining room is not big enough for a bigger table all year round. However you could have a table with extending leaves or just extends not only for Christmas but for Easter and when the family comes to visit, not forgetting those dinner parties you will have in the New Year. There is a selection of tables to choose from, all sizes and chairs to match or match up your style of table to your style of chair to suit your comfort. Family coming for Christmas as well? so get a on move and get into the bedroom with your paint and brushes which brings to mind where will everyone sleep. Don’t worry I have some ideas. You can buy an under bed and mattress to slide under your existing beds. What about a fold up guest bed? Another popular idea is a Bunk Bed with double bed below and a single on top. This allows Mum and Dad to sleep on the bottom bunk and a child on the top bunk or sleep 3 kids. This can be used for those summer visitors as a double room or as a twin room too. Always
helps to think ahead. Let’s not forget the Paris Day Bed which is a single bed with a metal frame around it. Put a throw over it and line the frame with cushions to make a sofa effect which has another single bed underneath to roll out. Just put it up on it’s legs and it all becomes a double bed or two singles. Good tip: you can move this to any room in your home, so if the grandchild is naughty can always put it out on the naughty terrace (Well it won’t fit on the naughty step will it!) CAMPOSOL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION.
Please read below an important communication from our President, Bob Owen, that will be of great interest to all Camposol residents. This article was written on November 9th, so by the time you read it, hopefully some of the points mentioned will have come to fruition. This month’s meeting with Mayor Gines Campillo saw the results of the current coalition government’s efforts to solve some more of Camposols on-going problems. Iberdrola have been switching off street lights due to unpaid bills from Masa. The council will next Thursday be awarding the contract worth 130.000 € to one of three tenderers to repair maintain and switch on street lights on the main roads. This cost will be born out of municipal funds. The contract for the water and sewage treatment has been awarded to Esamur. That formalises another part of our infrastructure. The repairs to pavements and roads caused by Aqualia are still under negotiation. Masa should have paid these bills but failed to do so, as a result Aqualia up till now, have refused to reinstate these pavements and roads. Not unreasonable on their part and no surprise then on Masa´s failure to pay their bills. Negotiations continue. A new engineer has been appointed to evaluate the cost of bringing Camposol up to a finished standard. He has 5/6 months to complete this work. Once his report is available to the council they will schedule the work over the coming years with costs born out of municipal funds. The work will not be done on a B-C-D schedule but will be prioritised with the worst affected areas being done first. This completion work will take years but progress will be dictated by the budget each year and will not cost residents any more than their normal IBI payments. The Mayor has confirmed that Sector A has been adopted. The full adoption of B-C-D can only take place once the urbanisation is brought up to a finished standard. He further confirmed that there will be no imposed entity and that all repairs and maintenance will be carried out by the council out of municipal funds. The subject of private roads and the responsibility for payment of street lighting and maintenance has yet to be negotiated. There was not enough time to discuss this item. It will be number 1 on our agenda at our next meeting on the 27th November. Agreement has at long last been settled with Confederacion Hidrographica. There will not be any demolition of houses built over the rambla. An

alternative scheme had been agreed with extra underground pipes and land built on that belonged to the Confederacion will be replaced by the allocation of other land belonging to the council. To summarise then, and for the benefit of those who continually claim that this council has done nothing for Camposol; 1.
We have a stable water and sewage supply.
2.
The street lights on the main roads will be repaired and maintained at the council’s expense.
3.
The repairs needed caused by Masa´s failure to pay Aqualia is under negotiation and I am sure will be resolved.
4.
An engineer’s report is expected in 5/6 months following which work will commence worst affected area´s first, at the council’s expense.
5.
Adoption of Sector A is confirmed.
6.
B-C & D will be adopted and no entity will be imposed.
7.
The threat of demolition of hundreds of houses has been averted with the new agreement with the Confederacion Hidrographica.
8.
Repaired the bridge and provided an alternative exit road from C & D.
9.
Appointed Jose Navarro (our choice of candidate) as District Mayor.
10. Allowed two CRA committee members to take part in the UIDM executive committee and influence decisions on Camposol.
14. Executed retrieval of Masa´s bank bonds. 15. Has put a road sweeper machine on the urbanisation. 16. Has awarded a contract to a company to supply and empty more green bins for garden waste.
All these positive items have come to fruition following our protracted negotiations with the council. Rome certainly wasn’t built in a day and for Spain, notorious slow in most things it does, this pace of events is certainly not considered slow. Compared to the previous administrations efforts it is in class of its own, Formula One class. To the critics I would urge you read this again and then tell me that your committee have done nothing (yes it has been claimed ) or that this council has done nothing for Camposol. The other urbanisations in the municipality have not received the attention that we have and can only dream of the progress we have made. This coalition (yes remember it’s a coalition , always more difficult to govern) is to be congratulated on making more progress with Camposols problems in a couple of years than the previous administration did in 8 years in power. I should know, I have lead your committee for 4 years and experienced both administrations. I have seen the change from “cant do” to “what can we do”. Judy, a single mother to five children

was determined to do something that would make people want to ´dig deep´ into their pockets to raise money so she hit on the idea of having her lovely locks shaved, in public – what a very brave lady! The chosen venue was the TREVI Bar on Camposol, with entertainment by the fabulous DJ Weeto who soon had the audience singing along to the nostalgic music of 60´s and 70´s, Judy toured the local bars and restaurants with a bucket to make sure every last penny was
whopping 1132.22€ and there is more to come in!!!!! Not content with that Judy, joined over 60 other energetic people for the 2013 MABS Race for Life this year we had an excellent mix of Spanish; English old and young participants all making their way around the 4km course around Camposol, several even did it twice!!! The event is expected to raise in the region of 5,000€ which in the current economic climate is a fantastic achievement.

El Gordo Christmas Lottery Spain’s Christmas Lottery is more about tradition than the money as it isn’t the highest payer by a long shot. 2013 will be the first year that it’s subject to tax, but we doubt that’ll affect ticket sales. Spain’s Christmas lottery is drawn every year on 22 December and is the most popular of all lotteries in Spain. Tickets go on sale months beforehand (July) and traditionally people share their numbers with friends and family. Offices, bars, schools, clubs and associations also sell participations in their tickets, so don’t be surprised if someone calls at your door asking if you want to buy one – schools often get kids to sell participations with a surcharge that goes towards an end-ofterm trip! Sharing lottery tickets means that the prize money is shared between many people, not only in Spain but worldwide too. The average spend in Spain per person last year was around 60 euros. How Does It Work? Until 2005 tickets were numbered from 00000 to 84999, however from 2011 there are now 100,000 numbers (00000 to 99999). Each ticket is split into ten – that’s why you’ll hear the Spanish talking about buying a “décimo” (literally a tenth), each décimo costs 20€. There are 180 serial numbers for tickets. An an example, ticket number 00000 will be issued with serial numbers from 001 to 180 and the same goes for each ticket number. The Christmas lottery is drawn by putting all the 100,000 numbered balls into one vessel and 1807 balls with the prizes in another. The draw is made by children from the San Ildefonso school, who sing the numbers and associated prizes until the all 1807 prize balls have been allocated. 70% of the money collected is given in prize money and in total more than 22

There are even rumours that lottery balls that have numbers with more paint (for example the number 8 uses more paint than number 1) stay at the bottom and never get picked. However, as all the lottery ball numbers are laser printed this isn’t the case. New Tax on Winnings And now the bad news. From 2013 all prizes over 2500€ will be subject to tax at a rate of 20%. So if you win El Gordo this year, you’ll pay 20% on 397,500 (the first 2500€ is tax free) and take home only 320,500€.

El Gordo Superstition Every year “special” numbers are sought after and are often sold out weeks before the draw. These numbers can coincide with a special date or event such as significant historical dates or birthdays and anniversaries. People will queue for hours if they are really interested in buying a specific number, however with the electronic system you can request a specific number at any lottery dealer. A few numbers are viewed as “ugly”, indeed every year some of these “ugly” numbers remain unsold on the last day and are returned. Very low numbers are often seen as undesirable, and yet every number has exactly the same chance of being drawn. If you’re interested, El Gordo has ended in 5 thirty-two times, in 4 twenty-seven times and twenty-six times in 6 and the last two years the final number has been 8 in both draws.

Migas: A Spanish Dish with Humble Origins

What is the most basic food you can think of? Well, bread is perhaps one of Europe’s most basic foodstuffs. And in Spain it is indeed something which has been central to daily life for centuries and even today is served with every meal. But if we are talking basic recipes,really basic, then a dish called “Migas”(literally crumbs) is perhaps one of the most basic, simple dishes in Spanish gastronomy. A stalwart of hard times and poverty stricken rural communities in Spain over the centuries it is a dish which is simple but surprisingly difficult to cook well. Migas is one of the most basic Spanish dishes(these ones are made from water and flour) Broadly speaking,there are two types of “Migas”(well there is a third made from wheatflour but it is not very common). One is made from day old bread which is broken up and fried into a sort of breadcrumb mass in olive oil(often with garlic) to which can be added dried sweet peppers, meat,etc. This version is popular in central and western Spain and can normally be found in most parts, and most especially in rural areas. To be honest, I have tried numerous examples of this version and there are some very nice dishes out there but there are also some terrible versions which are often sold in touristy spots as authentic local food and unfortunately give this dish a very bad name. The key,as in most dishes, is quality. If you use crappy old bread, too much (or tainted) olive oil then the crumbs get very greasy and lose their culinary charm. This recipe is easy to make but not so easy to make well so to find a good version you must suffer the lesser quality versions before you find a good one. Or get a recommendation for a good place to try it.
Migas(made from water and flour) with pork ribs The other way of making this great dish is to start with the ingredients in primary raw material state. So flour,salt,olive oil and water. Well mixed you then heat the mixture in a large very deep special

pan so common in southern Spain and especially so in Murcia where “Migas” is virtually the flagship dish of the region. This type of pan has a metre long handle for cooking over an open fire or a large gas paella ring.
Migas(made from day old bread) with fried egg and grapes The mixture is like a slightly oily dough and at this point you have to continue moving this doughlike mixture of flour water etc over a steady heat until it starts to break up into small blobs and then into even smaller crumbs of roughly the size of a 10 cents coin and slightly smaller. It is hard work separating this dough as you have to continually work it with a metal spatula type instrument and your arms start aching so it not a dish for slackers! Once you can see that the crumbs are well separated then it is tasting time to see if they are properly cooked through. At this point you can add previously fried pork ribs or sardines.
Migas with boquerones(fried fresh anchovies) “Migas” of this type can be eaten with fried pork ribs,with fried egg,with grapes, with sardines, with boquerones and much more. Some people love to eat them with chocolate. I have heard that some people even eat them with sardines and chocolate together but this I have not come across yet.
Whichever way you try “Migas” I can recommend the Murcian style ones with pork ribs or fish as the taste is unique and the experience a fun social one as everyone eats out of the same pan round the table, politely eating from the area of the pan in front of them. A little like eating paella from the pan. It is a communal and interactive way to eat a meal,making the whole experience memorable and a familiar affair. Whenever, we have “Migas” in our household or my inlaws’ household, it is one of those days that when you cross with someone in the house during the morning, the comments are of the following ilk: “Migas today!” “Know what’s for lunch today?(Big smile)” etc. If you get the chance, then this is a must try dish and one that harks right back to the roots of Spanish rural life and the basics of the agricultural community which for centuries hardly changed: water,wheat,the olive,salt and the pig. After returning to the UK for eight years, they finally settled in nr. Xativa, Valencia in 1992 and have been there ever since. They have three grown up sons. In terms of work experience Patrick has worked in the food industry for thirty years, twenty of them as Export Manager for a Spanish food company in Valencia. In 2012 they set upset up their own company. Christmas is almost here again and it is time to start thinking about decorating your home! Santa Claus and Coca-Cola
There’s a Christmas Urban Legend that says that Santa’s red suit was designed by Coca-Cola and that they might even ‘own’ Santa! This is definitely NOT TRUE! Long before coke had been invented, St Nicholas had worn his Bishop’s red robes. During Victorian times, he wore a range of colours (red, green, blue and brown fur) but red was always his favourite! In January 1863, the magazine Harper’s Weekly published the first illustration of St Nicholas/St Nick by Thomas Nast. In this he was wearing a ‘Stars and Stripes’ outfit! Over the next 20 years Thomas Nast continued to draw Santa every Christmas and his works were very popular indeed (he must have been very good friends with Santa to get such good access!).
On January 1st 1881, Harper’s Weekly published Nast’s most famous image of Santa, complete with a big red belly, an arm full of toys and smoking a pipe! This image of Santa became very popular, with more artists drawing Santa in his red and white costume from 1900 to 1930. By 1931, when Coke first used Santa in their advertising, his image was well established. The first ‘Coke Santa’ was drawn by artist Haddon Sundblom. He took the idea of Nast’s Santa but made him even more larger than life and jolly, replaced the pipe with a bottle of Coke and created the famous Coke holding Santa! Pictured above is The owner of the Tanatorio, Mariano Canovas Montiel (who also owns several other Tanatorio’s in the Murcia Province) Tony has been working in partnership with this company for 8 years now, but has been unable to provide his services to the Mazarron area as there was no chapel of rest there. With the opening of the new chapel of rest, Tony is delighted to be able to extend his services to the Mazarron area. The Chapel is set in tranquil peaceful surroundings with ample parking for the clients. There is a quite spacious seating areas for moments of reflection. The chapel of rest is bright and modern, even with a built in projector so when families listen to their favourite music they can also see photos of their loved ones. Tony will have an office inside the new Tanatorio and will be available for appointments or informal discussion on Tuesday & Thursday between 11am—1pm. So if your passing and want some information about funeral plans or funeral insurance please call in and see us during those hours. Book Review: The Sun Also Rises by
Ernest Hemingway
Synopsis The quintessential novel of the Lost Generation, The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway’s masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless
Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. It is an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises helped to establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. The protagonist of The Sun Also Rises is Jake Barnes, an American journalist (surprise, surprise) who lives in Paris. Jake is in love with an Englishwoman named Lady Brett Ashley, who has been divorced twice and has an attitude that is hard to come to grips with. Brett embodies everything the 1920’s wanted to let shine in women – sexual freedom with many love affairs, a short haircut and a party lifestyle. Jack and Brett are the epitome of ‘the Lost Generation’, those found without a sense of life or purpose in the aftermath of the first world war. The book comes in three parts – book one opens in Paris. Jake meets with his friend Robert, before picking up a prostitute. Jake’s seemingly miserable attitude is there from the very beginning, and only seems to increase when he bumps into Brett and one of her men in a nightclub. Brett confesses she loves Jake, but they know they can never be together. Jake suffered an injury in the war and is impotent. While it is never openly discussed, the injury makes itself known very early in the story, as is Brett’s desire for sex. Fast forward to book two, and Jake’s friend Bill arrives New York, and Brett’s fiancée Mike from Scotland. Jake and Bill go fishing in Pamplona in northern Spain, but Robert decides to stay in
Pamplona to wait for Brett and Mike, because he and Brett had a tryst weeks earlier and hates the fact she is with Mike. Jake and Bill have an enjoyable trip and come back to Pamplona to drink a lot, something that is a ‘theme supreme’ throughout the book. As the alcohol flows, the group slowly turns on Robert, who is bombarded with antisemitic jokes. The group do everything Pamplona can offer – eat, drink, the running of the bulls, bullfighting and generally get on each other’s nerves. Brett has another affair, with a 19-yearold bullfighter named Romero, and eventually her lovers – Romero, Jake, Robert and Mike end up all professing love and generally punching each other as much as they feel like – which is a lot. Robert crushes young Romero in a fight, but he still manages to succeed in the fiesta bullfight. Book Three starts with the aftermath of the disastrous trip to Pamplona. The group parts ways and Jake goes to San Sebastian, but as he prepares to leave for Paris, he gets a telegram. Brett has gone to Madrid with young Romero, and (as with all stupid love affairs) things have gone sour. Jake goes to her rescue in Madrid, but Brett decides to go home to Mike. The closing scene is Jake and Brett together, wondering how things could have been between them. It would be easy to sympathise with the lost generation of the 20’s, after all they had endured. Sadly, with many of these characters, they are unlikable, but not unreadable. Hemingway gave Paris and Pamplona a distinct feel, Paris of general listlessness and Pamplona of fire and drama. The scenes in Paris can be tough – the cynic in me wanted to shake

the sorry lot of characters – rather than lost, they came off as a bit lazy. Brett is a character I thought I could identify with – independent, dismissive of cultural norms, her own woman. Instead, when she got dumped in Madrid, I was pleased. She played with people, and while reasonably honest about her behaviour, she pitted men against one another, without thoughts of anyone but herself. Strong women can have a conscience, but Brett is sadly lacking in morality, no matter the time period she lived in. Some noble actions are timeless. The book relies on plenty of ‘what-if’ scenarios, something all can identify with and the story moves at a good pace. Some have called it anti-semitic due to the number of times that Robert’s faith is mentioned (A lot. Too much? Perhaps). Masculinity and sexuality play their roles, consistent with the time period Hemingway wrote the book, when women were gaining some semblance of independence and free to explore sex almost as much as men (though in 2013, things still haven’t caught up completely). Some characters, such as masculine bullfighter Romero, struggle with the emergence of women’s sexuality and his perceived changes to their ‘femininity’. Love and sex are bantered back and forth with a male character who gives love but not sex, and a woman who is the reverse, something readers should appreciate. The Sun Also Rises is an excellent novel. It deals with a yearning that strikes every person during their lifetime. While some characters are more difficult to connect with, their emotions, Jake’s in particular, are very real. Whether they are lost people in search of the meaning in life, or a bunch of lazy drunks, is up to the reader. Personally, to me they are a bit of both. Even great love doesn’t always work out, and in my opinion, Jake had a lucky escape from Brett’s clutches. some time in the future. Inside, there’s also a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. Furthermore, as was expected, the Moto G won’t be able to support 4G networks. There were some things that were unveiled that we weren’t already aware of. Motorola are claiming that Moto G packs an “all-day battery”, and also announced that it will have 1GB of RAM. The dimensions of the phone are 65.9 x 129.9 x 11.6mm, and it will weigh 143g. We already knew about the interchangeable coloured backs that would be available for the Moto G, but not what they would be called. As it turns out, they will be called “Shells”. Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, was impressed by the Moto G, and said that it “can’t be ignored”. He continued: “Against other phones in

In March 2013, a judge reexamined the $1bn awarded to Apple and reduced the amount saying the damages would need to be assessed at a new trial. The judge said that $550m of the award had been worked out in the proper manner but she ordered that the remaining $450m be reassessed. That $450m could be increased or lowered meaning that Apple could conceivably end up with more than the original $1bn awarded at the first trial. Apple claimed that Samsung copied elements of its user interface on its iPad and iPhone devices It argued that the South Korean company had copied its designs for the bodies of the original iPhone and iPad as well as userinterface elements such as the bounce-back response when a person scrolls beyond the end of list and tap-to-zoom. Samsung argued it was already working on rounded rectangular handsets dominated by a screen and a single button months before the iPhone was revealed. It sought $519m in damages from Apple. Apple said it applauded the court “for finding Samsung’s behaviour wilful and for sending a loud clear message that stealing isn’t right”. Even after this latest trial, which will involve a new jury, both companies could appeal.

‘Phishing’ Fraud Spanish Tax Office Warns of New ‘Phishing’ Fraud over the Internet Tax residents in Spain are being asked to stay alert and not give out any personal details over the Internet in response to an email they receive supposedly from the
Tax Office (Agencia Tributaria) telling them that they are due a further tax rebate. The email is a fraud, yet it looks very convincing as the Tax Office logo has been used, making the
email look official and genuine. The actual message states that after their subsequent recalculation of the contributors’ tax declaration, they have agreed to reimburse them with an extra 384,56 euro. In order to receive this rebate, they are asked to complete and return a form. After this, they will be asked to click on a link that, again, takes them to an officiallooking Web page. Here, the resident is asked to send their DNI, NIF or passport number and their date of birth. The next screen shows a page where the client is asked for their credit card number and password. The Tax Office was alerted of this scam and is taking action to locate the fraudsters. Via the Internet, their IT experts are blocking pages that try to masquerade as the Tax Office as well as stopping severs that are linked to the scam from receiving contributors’ details. The Tax Office is reminding people that their staff never ask for any confidential information over the Internet. This would include any personal or economic information, bank account numbers, credit card numbers or passwords. They also would like anyone who receives or is aware of any cases of ‘phishing’ to forward them the original email so that they can investigate the fraud further.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price December, that otherwise dark, cold month, which in recent decades, blazes with the lights of Christmas-trees, fairy lights, mad flashing house frontages, all aimed at steering us through the depths of winter towards that one day, the 25th, through until just after New Year, when everything falls flat and darkness returns along with misery and bills. Merry Christmas indeed. Or is it? Bah humbug, I’m afraid not. Like the fact Santa Claus is a Coca Cola advert (in about 2,000 years people will take for granted he was a miracle worker who dropped oodles of toys down chimneys-oh, sorry, they won’t, we’re more intelligent these days) Christmas has hijacked an even older festival, you know the one I mean? That recent addition to the Sheldonian Calendar, what else, but the one, the only, the original, (drum roll) Saturnalia. Yes, that bawdy Roman Saturnusworshiping mob designated the 17th-25th December as Saturnalia, boozing and singing in the streets (the forerunner of

carolling) and selecting, how can I put this, possibly a ‘Christmas Turkey’ of a person in each community, force feeding them with feasts and pleasures of the flesh for a week before executing them, classing them as the ‘lord of misrule’ (the power of darkness) and ensuring the return of the sun to aid the crops. (I won’t mention the sacrificing of small children lest you choke on a mouthful of turron or mince pies.) Notice some similarities with Christmas? Someone had a last supper, before meeting a gruesome fate. When Christianity reared its Bronze-Age head, the Romans decided to give December 25th to the birthday of Christ thus enabling people to go on with the celebrations, culminating on that one day. Those earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated with drinking, sexual over indulgence, and the aforementioned singing in the streets. Swansea is still managing to keep up with Saturnalia in this respect. So, now you know that Christmas is a fake, and you really should be worshipping one of the original gods, (they were there before anyone else) unless you’re more into Thor, Odin, or Zeus-my personal deity due to my Greek feet, you’re going to need to know how to celebrate Saturnalia properly. So to prepare you for a Happy Saturnalia-fest, here’s a handy guide. 1. Wear the colours of the season, blue and gold. No black sequins. 2.-Decorate windows, doors and stairs with greenery, adding golden cut-outs of

suns, pinecones, nuts and acorns. 3. If you have a tree in the garden, decorate it with sun symbols, stars and the face of the god Janus. (January) 4.-Make biscuits shaped like fertility symbols, suns, moons, stars and herd animals. 5. Drink wine and honey. (Mulsum) 6. Greet people with ‘Io, Saturnalia!’ (Eeyo, Saturnalia) 7. Have a feast on the 17th. 8. Give presents of food, candles, sweets or lamps, with poems attached. 9. Make a Lararium (instructions online) stick a candle in it with an image of Saturnus. Don’t send any cards, that’ll save a few bob. Io, Saturnalia everybody.

Recipes for Christmas
Christmas pudding
Recipes Brandy butter
and 1-2 teaspoons of water until it forms soft dough, then put it into a plastic bag and chill for 20 - 30 minutes. Roll out the pastry to a thickness of 2-3mm(0.1in) and cut out about 18 rounds measuring 7.5cm(3in) with a pastry cutter. Place in lightly greased patty tins and spoon the mincemeat evenly into the pies.
Ingredients 225g/8oz golden caster sugar 225g/8oz vegetarian suet 340g/12oz sultanas 340g/12oz raisins 225g/8oz currants 110g/4oz candied peel, chopped 110g/4oz plain flour 110g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 55g/2oz flaked almonds 1 lemon, zest only 5 eggs, beaten 1 level tsp ground cinnamon 1 level tsp mixed spice 5g/1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg pinch of salt 150ml/5fl oz brandy or rum Preparation method Lightly grease 4x600ml/1 pint or 2x1.2 litre/2 pint pudding basins.
Try this easy recipe for traditional brandy butter; perfect for slathering over mince pies or Christmas pudding. Ingredients 125g/4oz unsalted butter, softened 125g/4oz icing sugar 2 tbsp boiling water 3 tbsp brandy Preparation method Cream together the butter and the icing sugar. Beat in the boiling water and brandy until smooth.
Re-roll the leftover pastry and cut out round lids, stars or other festive shapes to fit on top of the mincemeat. Lightly brush the pastry tops with the beaten egg and bake in the oven for 12 - 15 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and leave for a few minutes before removing from tins and cooling on a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar.
Sage and onion stuffing
Chill until needed and serve with mince pies or Christmas pudding.
Easy mince pies
Mix together all the dry ingredients. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix well. Spoon the mix into basins. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely with string. Make a string handle from one side of the basin to the other so it is easier to pick the basin out of the pan after cooking. Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid. Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time, if necessary. If you do not have a steamer, put the basins in a large pan on inverted saucers on the base. Pour in boiling water to come a third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. Cool. Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. To serve, steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or homemade custard.
Ingredients 140g/5oz cold butter, diced 225g/8oz plain flour 50g/2oz ground almonds 50g/2oz golden caster sugar 1 orange, zest only pinch of salt 1 egg yolk 1-2 tsp cold water 280g/10oz good quality mincemeat 1 egg, beaten icing sugar for dusting Preparation method Preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
Ingredients 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp fresh sage, finely chopped 80g/3oz fresh white breadcrumbs salt and pepper 1 egg, beaten Preparation method Sweat the onion in the oil, until soft but not coloured Mix together the onion, sage and breadcrumbs and season well. Add enough of the beaten egg to bind the mixture together and use to stuff meat or poultry or to roll into individual stuffing balls. If making stuffing balls, cook in a roasting tin for 30 minutes.
Rub the butter into the flour and add the almonds, caster sugar, orange rind and salt until the mixture is a bit crumbly.

Although a vigorous wind had sprung from nowhere the night before, The Rev. Len Eaton was not phased and said that other years had seen the same weather pattern. His sermon was very poignant and I personally found it very moving and inspiring. Our thanks to Malcolm Rushton for supplying the sound system, also under difficult conditions with laptop screens not being the most readable under strong sunlight. David Senior-Peake did his usual great job on the organisation front and many thanks for every contribution, both financially and in many other ways. There was a fantastic sense of

SLEEP
The average human being sleeps 6 to 8 hours a night, almost 50 hours a week, and more than 2,600 hours a year— that means, on average, we spend almost 21 years of our lives asleep. Much more that just a time of rest and repair, sleeping allows us to not only process short and long-term memories but also reconnect with the original spirit or consciousness from which we incarnated as human beings. To reach this level of deep sleep, our sleep habits should be in rhythm with the universe. “When your physiological and biological rhythms are in sync with nature’s—the movement of the earth, sun, moon, and stars; the cycle of the seasons, and the pull and push of the ocean tide—sleep becomes effortless.” The Indian philosopher, Adi Shankara, identified three states of consciousness, of which deep sleep is the third. In this state, he said, we are returned to “the source of all,” the original self. The Science of Sleep In a normal person the average amount of sleep is about 8 hours per night of which at least a third is deep sleep. This deep sleep is interrupted every 45 minutes or so by dream sleep followed by light sleep. Dream sleep is responsible for the discharge of emotional stresses that have accumulated as a result of experiences during the day
or experiences in the past. It is during this stage that our brain processes memories and during the deeper phase of sleep which is our deep sleep our long term memories and our short term memories are both processed and stored. When we are deprived of sleep we are more vulnerable to every kind of illness and because sleep regulates our hormone levels, lack of sleep can also cause disturbances in the metabolism that leads to obesity and weight gain. Besides the physical damage there is also loss of mental clarity and in ability to focus. Studies showed that a person deprived of sleep and a person highly intoxicated with alcohol can display the same lack of neuromuscular co-ordination and lack of focus or attention. In fact sleep deprivation is now believed to have been a major factor in the Challenger space tragedy and also in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Most people in western societies look at sleep as a restorative mechanism for our biology system which it is, but understanding the spiritual levels of this can also give us a clue to the mysteries of enlightenment. In the Eastern spiritual traditions of the world, deep sleep is a non local state of awareness - it is a return to the original spirit or consciousness from which we are incarnated as human beings. That is why deep sleep results in a feeling of freshness, just like a baby is fresh when it incarnates from the same domain. When we are in perfect harmony with nature’s rhythms then our sleep is effortless, joyful and blissful. The movement of the earth as it spins on its axis, the earth going around the sun, the sun moon and earth moving in relationship to each other and to the stars and the push and pull of the ocean tides. These are the cycles and seasons that are programmed into our bodies’ rhythms, we seem to be dancing to the music even though we can not hear the tune. Do you wake up refreshed and alert? Do you get good sleep? If not, what are you going to do about it? When you wake up in the morning does your body feel joyfully energetic and is your mind restfully alert and clear? In other words did you sleep well...? To promote restful sleep, try the following routine: Eat a relatively light dinner Take a leisurely stroll after dinner To the extent possible, minimize exciting, aggravating, or mentally intensive

activities after 8:30 P.M. About an hour before bedtime, run a hot bath into which you place a few drops of relaxing bath oil. Diffuse relaxing aromas in your bedroom. As your bath is running, perform a slow self-administered oil massage and then soak in the warm bath for ten to fifteen minutes. While soaking, have the lights low or burn a candle, and listen to soothing music. After your bath, drink a cup of warm relaxing herbal tea. If your mind is very active, write a journal for a few minutes before bed, “downloading” some of your thoughts and concerns so you don’t need to ruminate about them when you shut your eyes.Read inspirational or spiritual literature for a few minutes before bed. Avoid dramatic novels or distressing reading material. Do not watch television or do any work in bed. Although this is necessary for our body, too much cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world and the second leading cause of potential years of life lost and premature mortality after cancer. The levels of cholesterol tend to grow with age. The increase of cholesterol does not usually have signs or symptoms, but can be detected with a simple blood test.You will be more likely to have a high cholesterol level if you have a family history, overweight or abusing the fatty foods. A proper diet, exercise and quitting smoking are the most effective measures to lower cholesterol and triglycerides. In addition, these lifestyle changes are forever and you must follow them even if you take medicine to control your cholesterol. Recomendations. - Follow a varied diet, with plenty of grains, vegetables and fruits. Cecilio, Mazarron must now have one of the strongest attacking line ups on paper so it is now time to convert this into success on the field. Both the Juveniles (17/18 years) and the Cadetes (15/16years) made successful starts to the season and at the time of writing were first and second in their divisions. The policy of bringing through local players from the Mazarron area is now beginning to bear fruit and our junior set up is one to be proud of. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to each away game, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach prices are 7€ for members and 9€ for non-members. Nissan to launch electric NV200 ahead of stricter emissions rules for vans Nissan and the city of Barcelona have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the use of EVs as taxis and as delivery vehicles. Nissan will launch a batterypowered version of its NV200 van aimed at private customers and fleets based in European cities. It is part of the automaker’s push to offer zero- or low-emission alternatives for its entire lineup to meet the region’s tougher pollution rules.

The e-NV200 will launch in 2014, well ahead of the proposed 2020 deadline, at which time fleet CO2 for vans would decrease to 147 grams per kilometer from 203g/km now. The electric van also will help Nissan meet stricter limits in European cities for smog-causing nitrogen oxides and particulates, a Nissan spokesman told Automotive News Europe. One of the cities Nissan is working with is Barcelona. The automaker and the Barcelona government signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year for Nissan to develop a taxi version of the e-NV200 for the Spanish city. In exchange, the city will install a network of Nissan-designed electric charging stations around Barcelona. To further encourage sales of the e-NV200 – and other electric vans – the Barcelona government said it also is considering creating special EV loading zones, establishing EVonly taxi stops, offering tax breaks for EV fleets and only allowing EVs into certain sections if the city during certain times of the day. ‘Clean air zones’ “Many cities and governments are considering or enacting clean air zones in cities to reduce pollution. Taxis and delivery vehicles are obviously a key part of this fight,”

According to a report from the National Statistics Institute, the regions of Valencia and Murcia are top when it comes to the number of houses sold per 100,000 inhabitants. Statistics show that in the month of September 95 properties were sold for every 100,000 inhabitants in the Valencia region. In Murcia the figure was 78 for every 100,000. Both figures are above the national average of 63 per 100,000. Welcome to the December issue......Cannot believe that it’s nearly Christmas and another year looms ever closer. Let’s start with the sad news this month, we were told of a dog that was in the mountains, this poor boy was bleeding from his nose and was very weak. A weekend in Pacos and tests that were made shows that he had in fact digested rat poison. It had been in his system too long for us to save him, as vitamin K and blood transfusions had no effect upon his condition. So after much talk with Paco it was decided that the poor lad was put to sleep. Sorry son, we did try. Still with the sad news, but not as bad is that we are still battling with the authorities to try to get the horse from the parerra in Murcia. This has now been ongoing for several months, but I hope that the end is in sight, I want him out of there before Christmas. Let’s get to the good stuff..... Rayo a Galgo has now gone to his new home in Poland, Pedro and Lua have both gone to homes in the UK. Carlos and Ana have now got their permanent homes here in Camposol. I would like to thank all the families concerned for adopting these dogs and we hope that you have a long and happy relationship together. Boys and girls be good and don’t forget we love you all. Remember Thomas the Shetland pony we rescued from the parrera in Murcia, well the good news is that he too has found a home. He now lives with a horse called Cubitsa who was desperate for a stable mate. He is now a resident in Sax near Alicante. Arrangements are now being made to transport Henry another of our donkeys to his new home in Mula. He is just awaiting for that operation that all you men wince at, yes his castration then off he will go to his new home. The final paragraph I have left as it belongs to Twigglet. Remember last month we reported on his broken leg and that the hospital in Alicante would do the operation. Well the good news is that the op has been done and is a success. He is still there, as he has had his cast replaced. Nacho one of our equine vets preferred him to be at the hospital so he could be monitored but wow he is looking good.
