JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Well it’s that time of the year again! Some people love it, some people hate it, but either which way there is no escaping it- IT´S CHRISTMAS TIME!!! Personally I really enjoy this time of year. Enjoying time with family and friends accompanied by lots of great food and wine, what’s not to like? I have to admit though, that by the time the 3 Kings come around I am always ready for life to return to normal! This edition of The Journal is a special one for everyone involved with the magazine. We have added 8 more pages are now officially 64 glossy, high quality pages of great to read, fun and interesting community content. This means that since I became involved with the magazine five short years ago, we have doubled in size and trebled our monthly print run, not to mention winning 2 publishing awards along the way. Not bad going for what started out as a small community magazine. I want to say a big thank you to my long suffering graphic designer Danny McCarthy for the hard work he puts in each and every single month without complaint (Ahem!) and also give a nod to the sky to the magazines founder and my friend, Rod Sawyer who will be looking down smiling upon us. And of course, thanks to you, our readers for picking up a copy each month and supporting us. Anyway Oscar acceptance speech over, I want to apologise to our client Portal Wimax. Last month we printed incorrect contact details on their advert. Portal Wimax are the longest established Wimax provider in the area, and for readers of The Journal, they had put together a very, very special offer with 8MB Broadband being reduced from 29.90@ a month to just 19.90€ per month- with NO CONTRACT. If you tried to get in touch last month and couldn’t please see the new contact details on their advert and give them a call! To each and every one of our readers, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2016, Robbie Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

Storm Circles Spanish Carmaker Seat After Seven Losing Years

Volkswagen AG has stood by Spanish carmaker Seat through years of losses. Now the spreading emissions scandal

Long one of the weakest links among Volkswagen’s dozen brands, Seat fell back to an EU 40 mln deficit in the third quarter after a profitable first half. In 7 straight years of negative results, it racked up a deficit of EU1.39 Bln. Several of its models are near-duplicates of cars sold by other Volkswagen marques. As the group halts non-essential projects to deal with more than EU8.7 Bln in fines and repair costs, the Spanish unit may be a more politically expedient place to cut than in Germany, where powerful labour unions sit on the Volkswagen board. Volkswagen bought Seat, pronounced “say-at,” in 1986 in a bid to grow in southern Europe and secure a more economically-priced production location. The group’s first brand expansion outside of Germany, it touched off nearly two decades of growth and acquisitions. Seat’s not the only legacy of that era that Mueller may target. Volkswagen has drawn on earnings generated by luxury units Porsche and Audi to sustain less profitable divisions such as the Bugatti supercar marque, MAN heavy trucks and Ducati motorcycles. While Mueller has stood by the brands themselves, he’s said Volkswagen will take a hard look at the group’s more than 300 models and cut the worst performers. That could hit Seat models like the Alhambra minivan and Mii city car.

Firewood for Sale

In October, its registrations fell 2.7%, making it the fifth-place brand, according to Spanish car- and truckmakers’ association Anfac. Volkswagen pumped EU2 Bln into Seat in the last 5 years and committed before the diesel-emissions cheating crisis to another EU3.3 Bln in investments. Seat is not in a position to say that investments are 100% confirmed, a spokesman for the company said by phone. However, the models the unit has already announced for the next two years will reach the market as planned, Seat Chairman Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz said in the Oct. 30 statement. Some 14,000 people work at Seat, while another 56,000 workers are employed at its parts suppliers and distributors. While closing the Spanish factories entirely would be expensive, there may be another escape route. The plant in Martorell has been producing the Audi Q3 SUV since 2011. If Seat gets scaled back, its factories could make more cars for other Volkswagen brands, said Stuart Pearson, a London-based analyst with Exane BNP Paribas.

Founded in 1950 during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Seat got its start assembling Fiats. It was a joint venture aimed at a modernizing post-Civil War Spain. Now competing in a crowded market for budget-minded European car buyers, it has struggled even in its own country. It sold fewer cars than the VW brand in its home market this year.

region of Valencia, where a farmer found a long, metal-like object in his field and called the police.

“Maybe there were just two balls of fire and it looked like there were more... or some may have fallen in areas where no one goes.”

This time, special agents turned up but after determining the item did not present any danger, they took it to the police station in nearby Alicante.

The discoveries sparked a stir, prompting special agents to rush over and inspect the objects, but in both cases, police determined there was no radioactivity and no danger to human health. Rocket fuel tanks, chunks of satellites or something else entirely... In the space of a week, three mysterious objects have fallen from the sky onto the country’s southeast, prompting bomb disposal agents and experts in hazmat suits to rush over as puzzled locals looked on. First of all, a black beehive-like ball was found on the ouskirts of Mula, followed by a similar smaller object 20 Miles up the road in Calasparra. “In the early morning of the day when the first object was found, witnesses said they saw between 6 and 7 balls of fire falling from the sky,” Maria Jose

“It looks like a piece from an aerospace vehicle, but not a commercial plane. It could be a piece of satellite or something similar,” a spokesman for Alicante police told AFP.

The mysterious space junk was transported to the city of Cartagena where there is a national vocational training centre that specialises in chemistry.

According to NASA, more than 500,000 pieces of debris are currently orbiting Earth, and bits of space junk plummet to our planet every year.

“They could be auxiliary fuel tanks belonging to a rocket,” said a source at Murcia’s Guardia Civil, the police force that was called to the scene. A third object was discovered on Tuesday in Elda in the neighbouring

Camposol and District Independent Party

CDiP

Partido Independiente de Camposol y Distrito The regular monthly CDiP newsletter is now being received by very large numbers of Camposol and Country Club residents and businesses. It has become very popular because it carries stories and information direct from the Town Hall. It illustrates how your IBI is being spent and highlights the spectacular failure of the Political Parties in Mazarron to form lasting coalitions or to behave in an adult manner. You do not have to be a member of the Party to receive our newsletter; we would invite you to join our mailing list by simply emailing us on: cdipmazarron@yahoo.co.uk or cdipmazarron@gmail.com. We will include you immediately on our ‘interested residents’ list and you will receive continuous news and items of current interest. Our researchers ensure that we are up-to-date with all current political and social news coming out of the Mazarron Town Hall and we then pass this directly onto you. To our astonishment, following the debacle of the May elections, we are now growing in considerable strength; this may be because, on reflection, people have decided that a special opportunity was missed in the May elections. Whatever the reasons we are experiencing a surge in support. Joining our mailing list carries no obligation of any kind; we are simply concerned to ensure that the people of Camposol and the Country Club are up-to-date with how their future is being managed. If you have had concerns about the CDiP previously, why not take an uncommitted, no strings attached, look at what we are saying and then you can make an informed judgement. We welcome comment and will take any constructive views on board. If you join our mailing list we will send you our last newsletter immediately and you will receive the next publication by right. Start thinking positively today of the way forward for Camposol and the Country Club. Why not be part of the team that leads the Urbanizations out of their decline and into the sunlit uplands. We look forward to receiving your email.

Spain opts to maintain terrorism threat level after Paris attacks

As Paris remains in a state of shock over terrorist attacks that killed at least 129 people and injured over 350, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy spoke out to express solidarity with France and to allay fears of potential attacks on Spanish soil. “We want to tell our French friends that we are by their side, that they can count on us,” said Rajoy in a morning address at La Moncloa prime ministerial palace. “We stand together with all the democrats of the world in the defense of our values.” “There is no cause that can justify yesterday’s atrocity. We are not facing a war of religions, but a battle between civilization and barbarity,” he added. “Today, we are all France.” Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said later Saturday that the government had decided to maintain the terrorism threat level at its current standing following a meeting of the Terrorist Threat Evaluation Committee. The committee, which comprises the country’s top-ranking police chiefs, for the moment ruled out raising the alert from level 4 to 5, the highest possible, which means there is an “imminent risk” of an attack. “We wanted to make an appeal for calm,” the minister said. Spain has been on a level 4 alert ever since June, when Islamist terrorism hit Tunisia, France and Kuwait. Before that, in January, the level had been raised to 3 following the attack in Paris that left 12 people dead at the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The country had not been on a level 4 since the Madrid train bombings of March 11, 2004.

The study also shows that 37% of Catalans feel the political situation will improve within a year, while 16% think it will get worse and 30% see no significant changes on the horizon.

Madrid bans use of parking meters due to pollution

The city of Madrid has introduced unprecedented traffic restrictions as a result of heavy pollution in the capital.

A day after the speed limit was brought down to 70km/h on the M-30 ring road and all access roads into the city, drivers awoke to a ban on downtown parking for all non-residents. The prohibition has already resulted in unusually low traffic on many Madrid streets. The measures are a result of Mayor Manuela Carmena’s decision to activate a Level 2 protocol after 11 pollution measurement stations in the city revealed nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels above the limit of 200 micrograms per square meter. Nitrogen oxides can cause respiratory irritation and trigger asthma attacks.

Spain’s consumer prices fall by 0.7 pct in October Spain’s consumer prices fell by 0.7% in October when compared with the same month of a year earlier, according to data of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published on Friday by Spain’s Statistical Office (INE). According to the INE, prices of transport fell by 5.7% in October compared to the same month of a year earlier due to lower prices of fuel and lubricants, which had a big impact on October’s annual inflation rate.

Taxi drivers also reported a spike in demand as people left their cars at home, and the public bus network increased the frequency on 55 routes.

Spain’s prices have been falling for 3 consecutive months on a year-on-year basis after having fallen by 0.4% and 0.9% in August and September respectively.

But many other MadrileĂąos seemed confused as to whether the ban was truly in effect or not. Carmena claimed that it was being lifted, only to have the environment department contradict her soon later.

On a month-tomonth basis, Spain’s prices rose by 0.6% from September to October.

Violators of the downtown parking ban will face â‚Ź90 fines, said employees of SER, the company that runs the parking meters. Only residents, commercial vehicles, school buses, taxis, vehicles for people with reduced mobility and zeroemission cars are allowed to park in the blue and green areas.

The rise was mainly due to higher prices of clothing and shoes that increased by 11.1% and prices of food and nonalcoholic drinks that rose by 0.6%. On the other hand, prices of transport fell by 0.6%, prices of items related to

While city officials said it is still too early to assess whether the restrictions have brought down the number of vehicles in the city, the downtown area was experiencing fewer traffic jams.

PREPARING YOUR CAR FOR WINTER Winter weather in Spain can vary from year to year and snowfall on the south coast is unlikely. However, if your car is parked outside during the worst of the winter months, or you’re planning to visit the interior or venture north, there are some simple steps you can take to prepare your car for winter. PROTECTING AGAINST ICE AND FROST Lights, heaters and wipers put high demands on the car battery and they have to work harder in colder weather. If your battery is over 5 years old it may be time to shop around for a

replacement. Top up your windscreen wash with a more concentrated mix of antifreeze. Give locks and mechanisms a spray with WD40. Cleaning and waxing your car will give the bodywork a coat of protection against temperature extremes. BEING PREPARED Make sure you have a phone charger in the car should you need to call for assistance. In the event you get stranded, there are some items that will make a difference; carry some blankets, a folding shovel, jump leads, tow-bar and tow rope. If colder weather is forecast, make sure you have a full tank of fuel, as you may need to keep the engine running to stay warm until help arrives. Check your insurance policy covers you for emergency breakdown and recovery. Línea Directa provides for Road Assistance in their car insurance policies. This ensures that you receive immediate assistance by phone 24 hours a day. Our breakdown service will endeavour to get your car back on the road as soon as possible or tow your vehicle to your local repairer of choice in Spain.

ROAD SAFETY During the winter, driving conditions can become challenging. Winter tyres

or cold weather tyres mean shorter stopping distances, reduce aquaplaning and improve handling. If you haven’t changed to winter treads, road safety experts recommend 3mm of tyre depth as a minimum for winter driving. WINTER DRIVING Breakdowns are more common in winter. The number of breakdowns can increase dramatically during extreme conditions. For safe troublefree driving we recommend gentle manoeuvres, as stopping distances are ten times longer in snow and ice. To avoid wheel spin, pull away in second gear, easing your foot gently off the clutch. Maintain a constant speed where possible, if you need to break, then apply them gently and progressively. Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. If you get stuck, straighten the steering and clear any excess build up of snow from the wheels. You can get additional grip by putting a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels. Once your car is moving, maintain a constant speed, avoiding rapid acceleration or deceleration and try not to stop until you reach firmer ground. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902-123-161 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

Once you are not afraid to pick up a painting brush or pencil the fun begins, and all those health benefits and enjoyment are no longer limited to those of school age and under. At the Friday Art Group we use various materials and techniques, and have a library of books and magazines to inspire you and help you develop your skills. We do not run set classes – formal professional classes can be expensive – and there is no charge. But we are a friendly self-help group with various levels of ability and experience. Everyone is enthusiastic about their hobby, and enjoys the exchanging of ideas and knowledge. We get a great deal of satisfaction from our painting and drawing and most of us have a painting hanging in our home that we have produced. The Art Group meets each Friday at the Cultural Centre, Camposol, Sector B, from 9.45 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and new members, whether wishing to start a new interest or rekindle an old one, are very welcome. You can just turn up or contact Lesley Dunton on 968199966 or Viv Eagling on 968153529.

Start saving money with a Solar Water Heater Use the power of the sun this winter to reduce your energy bills and protect the environment with a solar water heater from Free-Sol. Solar power is a free, clean, green energy source and with the installation of a solar hot water heater being more affordable than ever before, there has never been a better time to upgrade your home to harness the power of the sun throughout the year. Often, things that make our lives easier are not good for the environment and things that are good for our planet can be less than convenient so it’s rare to find a product that is convenient, eco-friendly and money saving. A solar water heating system from Free-Sol is one of the most cost effective ways to help lower your carbon footprint and with oil, gas and electricity costs likely to increase, solar power is also a great way to deliver temperature-controlled hot water for FREE. The sun is doing all of the work for you, even in winter! In fact with a

solar water heater from Free-Sol you can expect to save up to 80% on the cost of producing your hot water. Furthermore, a solar water heater can enhance the value of your property.

Within a very short period, the capital cost can be offset by the lower running costs with the result that your initial investment will begin to pay you back quickly.

The installation of a solar water heater is quick and integrates with your existing plumbing and heating infrastructure. Technical advances in the design and manufacture of solar systems mean that today’s evacuated tube powered water heaters are more efficient and provide significantly better performance, delivering more domestic hot water all year round, even on cloudy days. This is because the tubes are able to absorb the energy from infrared rays, which can pass through clouds. Wind and low temperatures also have less of an effect on the function of evacuated tubes when compared to flat plate solar collectors. In fact, a solar water heater from FreeSol will produce so much hot water that in the normal sunny weather we have here in Spain all year round, you will struggle to use it all. Some of our clients even use their solar systems to top-up their swimming pools with hot water.

With Free-Sol’s extensive experience of designing, supplying, installing and servicing solar water heaters you are guaranteed to have the right system, properly installed using quality components. It will end up being one of the best investments you ever make that will last for many years.

At Free-Sol we use only the very best components and expert skills to create a solar water heater installation that excels in its quality and durability. Added to that, we also deal directly with the manufacturer so our customers benefit from a much lower initial investment.

We would be happy to provide you with a free, no obligation quotation and carry out a feasibility survey on your property to assess what is the most efficient installation for you, including full design, installation, commissioning, system monitoring and maintenance. All our products and components are sympathetic to the environment. We keep waste to a minimum which all helps to reduce the impact on the environment. You also have peace of mind knowing that Free-Sol solar water heaters are guaranteed for 3 years and the electrical components are guaranteed for 1 year. The English Funeral Director Invites You To Attend A Special Christmas Remembrance Service

Tony Smith, The English Funeral Director, is holding his ninth Christmas Remembrance service in order to help people remember loved ones at this special season. Although Christmas is a time for celebration, it can also be a time for remembering those who are no longer with us. Everyone is busy with Christmas shopping and wishing each other a Merry Christmas, but for some there will be an empty place at the table and a name missing from the Christmas cards. It may be for a loved one who has recently passed away or even for someone who died many years ago.The memorial tree service enables people to take part in a tangible act of remembrance at what can be a very difficult time for many people. You are invited to write a message or prayer for your loved one on a star which will be provided on the evening. This may be a person who has passed away recently or many years ago. There will be an opportunity to place the star upon our Christmas memory tree which will be dedicated during the service. The remembrance service aims to be uplifting whilst reflecting on the lives of those who have passed away. There will be a selection of poems, prayers, Christmas carols and a time for reflection. Stars will be available on the evening or if you are unable to attend please contact Tony Smith on 650 631 719 prior to the evening and we can hang a star on your behalf. The service will start at 6pm, you are invited to come from 5.30pm if you wish to write your message before the service starts. After the event there will be mince pies and a glass of sherry for everyone, so come and join us. Mazarrón New Tanatorio Monday 7th December 2015 at 6pm

As I am sure a lot of people know MABS have a room at the Hospice facility at Villa Martin. This facility is in great demand and MABS would like to obtain a second room to facilitate the demand. The cost of each room is around €16,000 per annum. The Mazarron Bahia LIONS have been in discussion with MABS and have offered to help in the fund raising for this second room. The idea that a Lion’s member, Andrew Brown, came up with was the breaking down of the cost into bricks, namely 350 bricks at a cost of €50 a brick.

On Thursday 12th November the Lions held a fun Race Night at Mariano’s and it was agreed that the proceeds of the evening would go to start the fund off, almost €650 was raised on the night with proceeds and several donations meaning that 15 bricks were paid for. The Lions feel that this was a good start and hopefully people will get behind the initiative as most people are touched by the need for this resource either for a loved one or someone they know. The Mazarron Bahia Lions meet at Cat’s Bar at 5 o’clock on the first Monday of the month if anyone is interested to come along and talk to us about the work they do and maybe join as a member

The idea is that people may like to buy a brick in memory of a loved one or groups may like to join together to buy a brick eg 10 people at €5 each or even businesses donating towards a brick. A display will be produced to show how the collection Come and try our award winning freshly made Steak & Kidney puddings Pudding Award Winner 4 Years In A Row!

ALL IS NOT LOST. GRANTING OF DEEDS IN CAMPOSOL This article has been written to help property owners in Camposol, in response to the number of people who still keep contacting us with their concerns regarding Masa bankruptcy process and the properties they bought on private contracts. The legal and financial situation of the company is well known, with a huge number of court cases and embargoes affecting any property in their name and it is now a fact that JUMASA is into bankruptcy . But how this affect to owners who has not granted deeds their yet? You need to know that you still have the same rights to your property as you had previous to the bankruptcy process so your position can be defended into this process. A Bankruptcy Mediator has now been appointed by Court what means that the company no longer have faculties to do anything and all communications and action must be done through him. Regarding the above, there could be one of the following situations: 1.

Properties purchased by way

of a private contract where there is no restriction preventing them obtaining a public deed and registering the property at the Land Registry under the name of the current owner. The property still belongs to the purchaser because he bought this property on a private contract, which could be executed into the bankruptcy process if deeds are non granted and registered under the name of the current owner according to the agreements signed by both sides, purchaser and builder. No matter whether the property has been paid or not in full, as the balance of the price can be paid when grating the deeds on a banker´s draft at the public notary. You may feel free to contact us as a matter of urgency, as the bankruptcy mediator needs to be informed as soon as possible that you bought your property on a private purchase contract. This needs to be reported sooner rather than later as it could be too late if you leave this for too long. 2. Properties purchased as a resale from a private seller, who bought the property from the builder and where a deed was not granted. This could be the more puzzling and complicated situation as you have a right over a third party and not directly with the builder. Your sellers will need to grant deeds before deeds be granted into your name and your purchase be completed. You need to ensure that they employee a lawyer to make the mediator aware that they

into their names before they may put this into your name.

Such the case your sellers do not make any move to get their deeds granted, you will have no other option to take them to Court to pledge the cancellation of your contract and claim your money back. Nevertheless, you should contact your lawyer if you have any doubts at all about the legal status of your property. He/she will be able to apply for a “nota simple” and assess the situation accordingly and then advise you if there is any legal action that needs to be taken. You always must seek qualified, professional, legal advice and always make sure you deal with certified lawyers. At Corral&Alcaraz Law Firm we will be more than pleased to assist you. Wellspring Victory Church

Wellspring Victory Church - Christmas Carols on Camposol 2015 Once again this year we will be doing an open air Christmas Carol Concert on each of the four sectors…. It will be our seventh year on Camposol and each year we have had a great time bringing you a mixture of Christmas Carols, readings and seasonal songs, followed by mulled wine and mince pies. We have been amazed at the numbers who turn out every year to sing with us and I am sure that this year will be no exception... We will again be collecting at each concert to provide food parcels for local needy people over the Christmas period. To help us this year we will be joined by UkulelesRUs who will be playing their special selection of Christmas songs, so come along and join with us as we set the scene for a special season of celebration.

Wednesday December 23rd Commercial Centre [Sector B] We are hoping to have the snow machine in action again on Sector B – it was great fun last year. We look forward to seeing you at one of our special Christmas Celebration Concerts and we wish everyone a blessed and happy Christmas and New Year.

In total we have completed twelve different projects this year, signiďŹ cantly more than normal, which is a reection of how much support you have shown us. As you can see from the photographs opposite, we have created several raised rockeries outside of the doctors surgery, planted and gravelled three new areas on Central Park. Created a garden area and planted a new hedge on People’s Park. Built the circle of remembrance, replanted and gravelled the memorial garden and covered a large area with stone in the Memorial park. DeďŹ ned the seating and parking areas outside the commercial centre by providing 66 trees in planters. Tiled and painted 24 benches around the whole of Los Palacios. Gravelled the area at the entrance to the footbridge and planted outside Mariano’s. These improvements have cost a total of â‚Ź12,750 which has been raised via our bucket collections, book club donations, rafes held at Tel’s and Cat’s bar during the summer and during our fund raising trips and events that have been really well supported. A lot of the local businesses on Los Palacios have also provided ďŹ nancial support for the group and we are grateful they recognise the importance of putting something back into the community. We have received really supportive feedback and encouragement on both our Facebook page and from members of the community when we are out and about working, which culminated in our group receiving a PYM award, of which we are all very proud. We hope that by reminding you of our achievements this year, we can count on your ongoing support next year and hopefully we will be able to continue making signiďŹ cant changes that beneďŹ t us all. Finally on behalf of everyone at Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Christmas Day 2015 Welcome Cocktail Cava / Vermouth

Jon was missed as he is recovering from a nasty fall whilst pruning his bougainvillea. His little, sometimes implausible (Surely not? ED), stories keep us entertained. There were 16 walkers and 2 very well behaved dogs on leads. Lunch was held at the La Parra Restaurante, El Berro and was very good. The December walk is on Saturday 12 December and the details are available by emailing humanistgroup.murcia@ gmail.com or going to www.bolnuevo.com, click on Humanists. Now that the heat of the summer is over, walks will be on the third Saturday of each month in different areas. The walks normally last about 3 hours. The November walk is in the San Juan de Los Toreros area of Almeria.

The first walk of the season for The Humanists of Murcia was in the Sierra Espuñas. The group went on the Eagle Walk, which took around 3 hours. The weather was good, a little warm when going up the slopes. Audrey came up trumps and took great care of the walkers, warning of any part that needed special care and again she did not lose anyone. She explained that the walk was closed to the public during the eagle-breeding season so that the birds were not disturbed.

The December walk is from the Country Club Mazarrón on 12 December meeting at 10:00. The new venture is an Easy Rambling walk, which is on the level and lasting two hours. This will be on the second Saturday of each month; the next one will be from La Azohia. Details from humanistgroup.murcia@gmail.com and if there is the demand, a walk will be held on 26th Dec. probably in the Coto Fortuna area.

Our Halloween celebrations stretched into 2 weeks of kiddies’ fun. Halloween camp was such a success that we are giving the kids a treat and organizing a Christmas camp and visit from Father Xmas the weekend of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th December.

Other more chronic conditions were treated by Jackie Barry in her very interesting clinic Level 1 in which she showed the Cavalli team how to use Massage, Stretching and Acupressure to relieve arthritis, muscle contracture and various aches and pains brought about by horses’ emotional upsets like grief, depression, stress and worry. She herself treated Sandros, Mollie, Sabba and Tango with Acupuntura. Soon we will be organizing Level 2 with Jackie so anyone interested in solving their horse’s back problems,

Christmas trees are common in the home but again they don’t appear until the second half of December. Also in the home there are intricate, miniature nativity scenes called Belénes which depict life in the village where Jesus was born. The Belén always include the baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph as well as the Three Kings, Baltasar, Melchior and Gaspar. Calendar of Christmas Events: 22nd December – All over Spain people never stray far from a TV or radio as the Christmas lottery is drawn over a period of many hours. Everybody in Spain buys tickets for this lottery in the hope of winning El Gordo (the fat one) and the winning number usually means that a good number of people from the same village become a lot better off overnight. Besides the big three prizes there are thousands of smaller prizes shared by people all over Spain. 24th December – Christmas Eve is called Nochebuena in Spanish (Goodnight) and it is the most important family gathering of the year. In the evening people often meet early for a few drinks with friends then return home to enjoy a meal with the family. Most bars and restaurants close in the evening. Prawn starters followed by roast lamb would be a typical meal rounded off with a typically Christmas sweet called turrón which is a nougat made of toasted sweet almonds. Another typical festive sweet is called Polvorones which is made from almonds, flour and sugar. Cava, Catalan champagne, would be the chosen

drink for the Christmas toast though plenty fine Spanish wines will also be consumed with the meal. 25th December – Children may receive a small gift on Nochebuena or this morning but the day for presents is 6th January, Epiphany, when the Three Kings bring gifts for the children. Christmas Day is a national holiday in Spain so shops are closed yet it is not a day of great celebration but rather a calm day when people go out for a walk, drop into a bar, etc. Another large family meal at lunchtime is common though it’s becoming more common to see families eating out on the afternoon of Christmas day. 28th December – This is the day of Santos Inocentes (Holy Innocents) and is the equivalent of April Fools’ Day when people play practical jokes on one another. Often the national media will include a nonsense story in their broadcasts. In some villages youngsters light bonfires and one of them acts as the mayor who orders townspeople to carry out civic tasks such as sweeping the streets. Refusal to comply results in fines which are used to pay for the celebration. 31st December – New Year’s Eve is known as NocheVieja. It is a big celebration all over the country with street parties and special nights in hotels and clubs everywhere. Until midnight people tend to stay at home and on the stroke of midnight it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one on each stroke of the clock to bring good luck for the new year. In Madrid and other main cities revellers congregate in the main square (Puerta del Sol in Madrid) and eat the grapes along with a celebratory bottle of cava then head out into the night until after sunrise. 1st January – A low key public holiday with plenty people sleeping off their excesses. 6th January – This is the Feast of the Epiphany (Día de los Reyes Magos) when the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem. For Spanish children this is the most important day of the year when they wake up to find that Los Reyes Magos (the Three Kings/Wise Men) have left gifts for them in their house. Santa may leave them a token gift on December 25th but the Three Kings are their favourites, especially Baltasar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts. During the day of 6th the Three Kings continue their good work and are seen distributing gifts to children in hospitals all over Spain. 7th January – The day after receiving their gifts children return to school, their parents go back to work and Christmas in Spain is all over for another year.

Come and enjoy a special evening in our beautifully set restaurant overlooking our stunning gardens and pool. This smart ring can control your phone, laptop and TV

laptops, GoPro cameras, and Roku boxes and deliver a handy range of controls for some of your most-used surfaces.

The latest competitor in the battle to be the first ‘true’ smart ring claims to be able to control your phone, tablet, laptop and TV -- and it looks a bit like an Apple Watch. The Neyya smart ring can’t give you notifications when you get an email or track your movements, and it doesn’t have a screen. But it can connect via Bluetooth to iOS and OS X devices, Windows

Unfortunately, it doesn’t actually deliver messages -- but you can set it to vibrate when you receive a call. And you can use it as an external remote-control. The ring is controlled using the flat surface on the top, which acts as a miniature touchpad that you can swipe to do different things, depending on what it’s connected to. Competitors for the smart ring title have similarly limited uses: there’s the Swarovski Shine that can track your movements

and measure the quality of your sleep, and syncs a crystal with your smartphone so you can analyse the data, and there’s also the Ring Clock. Released in 2013, this smart ring is “a marriage of the ring and watch.â€? LED-lit numbers display the time when you rotate the ring. To save energy, it doesn’t always display the time. The Neyya has the most applications to date in the smart ring race, however; from an Indian startup of the same name, Neyya can be used as a slide-changer during presentations by connecting with Keynote, Powerpoint and Prezi. It can also be used to control simple functions on your TV, laptop, phone and tablet, like volume, track selection, and switching off an alarm. “Wearables like Fitbit and Apple Watch have transformed the way we track, monitor and manage our health and communications,â€? said Sonia Hunt, Neyya president. “With Neyya we are attempting to reimagine the way we control and interact with our productivity devices.â€? The Neyya ring costs 150â‚Ź for the titanium model and ÂŁ170â‚Ź for a gold model. It has a ten day battery life and takes 90 minutes to charge.

addition, the ‘Fluid Viewing’ experience will come to even more screens with a new app for smartphones, with other devices to follow.”

‘Sky Q’ brings 4K and stylish new interface to premium TV Sky has announced ‘Sky Q’, a ground-up reworking of its premium TV service which it says will represent the future of television At a media event in London, Sky said the new service is designed to make it possible for users to consume content on their own terms. Jeremy Dorroch, Sky CEO, said Q “reimagines TV so that it’s flexible and seamless across different screens”. The new service will be centred on a new 2TB box -- Sky Q Silver -- and a touch remote which looks to be greatly simplified, closer to the Apple TV remote than the traditional plastic whale that Sky TV has used for several years. The Sky Q app will allow you to watch your recorded shows on mobile, and watch live TV wherever you happen to be. Sky said it will be possible to record up to four shows at once using Sky Q. Sky Q will also make it possible for the broadcaster to offer services in 4K UHD, a service that will, however, cost extra money (as did HD at launch). The service also includes: A new programming guide, split between Catch Up TV, Top Picks and Box Sets. A Continue tab will also let you get back to shows you left half-way through. Q Mini boxes, which are cheaper than the main Sky Q box, that allow you to send live and ondemand TV around the home. (This is now known as ‘Fluid

Viewing’) Voice commands will be added in 2016, Sky said The service trailed the announcement by saying it was equivalent to other advances in home entertainment -including the transition to colour, and the launch of on-demand programming. Sky Q Hub -- a new hub with ‘built-in Powerline networking technology’ so it can use WiFi and electrical wiring to communicate with the Q box.

Sky currently has more than 20 million customers for its various services, but has been facing increasing competition from domestic, free streaming services and US competitors Netflix and Amazon Prime. Sky has integrated several of those services into its boxes in the past, but has been challenged to respond to the rise of cheaper set-top systems and smart interfaces, beyond its provision of exclusive TV like Premier League football and Sky Atlantic.

Sky said in a press release that its service would be improved constantly, with other new features already planned: “After launch, Sky Q will keep getting better for customers with the launch of Ultra High Definition later in 2016 and a pipeline of other innovative new features,” it said. “To make searching for programmes even easier, Sky Q will add a powerful voice search capability. A Body in Barcelona: Book Review by Caroline Angus Baker

found among abandoned orange groves just outside the city. Chief Inspector Max Cámara, now heading up the new Special Crime Unit, is put on the case. But this is no ordinary murder. Behind it, Max uncovers a tangled web that could awaken ghosts from the past, decimate Barcelona and destabilise the whole country It’s all down to Max, but the stakes are higher than anything he’s ever known. I am a huge lover of the Max Cámara, though after the last instalment, I wondered how this book would be able to top its predecessor. Turns out that the book had no interest in doing that, rather swinging in an all-new direction. If any book could be listed under #topical, this book would be it.

Tensions in Spain are rising: political violence and social unrest have suddenly re-emerged. Madrid is trying to keep a tight leash on Catalonia, where the call for independence is getting louder by the day. The last time Barcelona moved to break away, in the 1930s, Spain quickly descended into civil war. Down in Valencia, a shallow grave is

page 40

Max and Alicia are in trouble, and that is no surprise after the ending of Blood Med. I like that the author did not gloss over the effects of Max and Alicia’s last dramatic case, which could have been easy. Rather, realism is put into the relationship between these two. Max has to investigate the murder of a child, son of a very wealthy and powerful man. But as Max tries to bring a child killer to justice, he finds himself being dragged toward Barcelona and the boiling state of the people. People are lying, and a mysterious man seems to

have plenty of answers, but doesn’t seem to help. In this book, we see more than just Max’s perspective, as a right-wing nutball Legionarios soldier wants to stop Catalonia from regaining its independence (yes, regaining, do some homework if you are new). Added to that a father and son duo from Valencia who Max sees at their soup kitchen have also gone to Barcelona. Under the spectacular backdrop of the La Sagrada Familia, Max and all the others will come together for an explosive showdown in a city trying to be reborn. Did I enjoy this book? Yes, and I read it quite quickly too. For me, there was no confusing information, but I think readers unaware of Spain’s political state should be fine. Sometimes I want to shake Max, sometimes hug him, and the fact he isn’t perfect makes for a great main character. I will keep my Catalonian independence opinion to myself, but I do hope that if and when Barcelona becomes free of Spain, it happens with far less bloodshed than the 1930’s. You could read this book on its own, but treat yourself and start at the beginning of the series. Bring on Max Cámara book 6!

How Much does it Cost For a Ton of Logs? There is no question that the winter months are upon us! When out walking in the evening’s one can smell the unmistakable smell of wood smoke coming from houses all around. It seems that most people are aware of the advantages of using a log burner in the winter months, but how many of us are aware about the cost versus quality aspect when purchasing firewood? We recently asked Manolo the owner of El Pareton Firewood what we should consider when ordering firewood. And he had this to say: “The most common question that we get asked when the phone rings is “How much is a ton of logs?” It’s a crazy question really. A bit like phoning a used car garage and asking how much a car is! We supply all different types and sizes of firewood, each type having its own unique qualities. Therefore the price can vary depending on the customer’s needs.” He said. “All our firewood is correctly stored throughout the winter to ensure that it loses around 20% of its humidity, making it ideal for burning. We are one of the only businesses

We sell only the highest quality seasoned Firewood!

in the area that has a custom facility dedicated to this, therefore we know that when we sell a ton of logs to a customer, not only will they get wood that will burn properly, they also get an actual ton. Some companies sell green wood from recently cut down trees, it has he extra humidity therefore is heavier and does not burn correctly. Firewood from El Pareton is sourced from a variety of locations in Murcia and in neighbouring provinces. When fruit trees have reached the end of their useful life for fruit production they are removed and new trees planted. The wood is then purchased directly by Manolo and put into storage. “We use all types of wood, but mainly Orange, Lemon, Almond, Olive and Pine. Each one burns differently. Our olive wood comes from Andalucia, and we only sell branches of olive, not the olive root. Burning the roots can be difficult and messy as they are nearly always covered in soil. Pine wood is a lovely wood to watch burn as the dried sap sparks and produces a beautiful effect, but it is better to use it in a glass front log burner rather than open fire. Our Almond wood is very dense and is a hard, long burning wood, but needs

www.thejournalspain.es

We Speak English

to be mixed with other wood to burn well.” Manolo tells us that when each person calls to place an order, they are asked about the size, type and location of the log burner as this enables him to recommend the correct type of wood. “Normally we recommend a mix of the different types of wood to ensure that our customers get the best value. It’s not a simple question of “how much is a ton of logs!” No one else holds a larger stock of log in this area than us. We provide a professional service.” So it seems when it comes to stocking up on firewood this winter, there is much more to consider than simply how much a ton of logs costs. It seems that even when sending your money up in smoke, like most things in life, you only get what you pay for! Uncle Paul’s problem page

A message to you from Uncle Paul. Enough about farts and dogs!!! Dear Uncle Paul I have had enough of men! All my life they have let me down. I have had two failed marriages due to then both cheating on me and this has dented my confidence so badly. But I have fallen in love again! This should be a joyful time for me but there is one big problem. I am in love with a chair from a bar on Camposol A!!! Oh god! I know….. Whack job or what? But when I go to the bar, l get all excited and nervous all at the same time. I pray that there is noone sitting on TJ…. that’s the name I call him. I have nearly come to blows with people when I have gone in and they are sitting on his lovely padding. I have tried to steal him once by slowly moving him out of the bar but was told that that type of chair is not allowed outside. He is very special to me and I love him and want to marry him. Can you help me please? Wood Lover Dear Wood Lover I give up!!!! You are one sick twisted saddo! Get a life….. I love my lap top but I do not want it to carry my babies!!!!!!!! What you have is a fetish called Objectophilia and it is defined as the love for objects. People with this problem are not attracted to people, but sexually and emotionally committed to a particular object. There is support available if this is your particular bag. There are other types of strange problems people have including: Squashing Fetish: obsessed about getting squashed by an XL woman. Pedal Pushing Fetish: obsessed about car pedal pushing. Girls stuck in quicksand: this is a strange one! It involves watching women be almost completely submerged in quicksand. I ask you?... But my favorite is CAKE FARTS! Yes you read it here CAKE FARTS!!! The technical word for a fetish for human flatulence is eproctophilia, but “CAKE FARTS” is in its own strange world. A girl sits on a cake and farts on it. That’s it, the end. I need to lie down now I have a headache…. A sodding chair?!!! Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I am arguing with my husband due to our sleeping arrangements because of

2015

his dog. My husband has had his dog for over 11 years. They came as a package when we met. He is a lovely little thing and we both love him dearly. The dog has slept with us in the bedroom with us since we’ve been together and I have never had a problem with this before. Shoo-Shoo the dog was recently diagnosed with cancer in his nose. It is fast growing and causes him to snort and wheeze all night. I have lately started to sleep in another room. This upsets my husband because he wants us to be together, but he refuses to sleep away from the dog. I need to sleep. Neither of us will give way regarding this. Am I being insensitive about the dog? Is it too much to want to sleep with my husband but not with the noisy dog? Cruella Dear Cruella Yes you are being insensitive and also selfish. It’s all about you…. You must have been hit by the ugly stick to need so much beauty sleep that it cannot be interrupted. I can certainly see people having this potential dilemma with pets. It’s sad that your husband’s beloved pooch is so sick, but it makes no sense for the two of you to suffer every night with lack of sleep making you both sleep-deprived zombies the following day. First of all, your husband should check with the vet to see if there’s something that can make the dog more comfortable and his sleep quieter. If not, then since the dog’s relationship with your husband predates yours, I think that obligates him to play nursemaid and it sounds to me he wants to. Tell your husband you admire his dedication and love for the dog and you want to support him during this time. Suggest you do alternate nights sleeping with the dog. You could also forgo a few nights and put your beauty sleep on hold and just rough it with them both until the dog’s suffering comes to an end. Or you could go behind your husband’s back and just have him put down….. Uncle Paul

Dear Maybelline Lots of farts around this month! You have so come to the wrong person for support of your philosophy. I am of the old school that he was showing you he was comfortable enough with you to let one rip, even if it was a smelly one. Sure you were trapped, but a moving vehicle with the windows down offers the greatest chance for sulfur dissipation. It’s good he apologised, but it’s too bad you didn’t laugh hysterically, through the mist and say, “Nice one!” If you are going to carry on seeing this guy, maybe on your next date you should give him a beautifully wrapped package of pills for wind, with a note that says, “This made me think of you.” Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I was coming out of Consum the other day when I saw a woman walking outside whose skirt had ridden up high enough at the back to see the bottom of her underwear. I considered telling her but decided against it because I am a man and did not want to come across as creepy. Did I make the right decision? Alvin Dear Alvin I think you made the totally right decision not to mention anything to this woman. Given the hypersensitive atmosphere in the world today, it was probably best that you didn’t approach an unknown female with the information that you could view her nether regions. Indeed, it seems ridiculous not to be able to warn a stranger about a wardrobe malfunction, but sadly I think you were right to consider your advice could be wildly misconstrued. Also she could have been mortified if they were her third best pair of knickers! Uncle Paul

Dear Uncle Paul, I read the problem someone had with their dog farting and I have a problem like this as well. Dawn Llewellyn-Price During December’s darkest days, with Christmas looming and New Year only a burp behind, we turn our attention to alcohol in a big way. Our tipples throughout the year may often be of the more mundane kind, -wine, a pint or three, the odd spirit, a cocktail or ten, but the festive time of year finds us hitting the shops for the more high end bottles to stock up our cabinets. In case someone pops in? Of course. Champagne and Cava sales soar and Port and Sherry suddenly put in an appearance (often in the hands of relatives who deliver it with gusto in a special glittery carry-bag.) We once had six unopened bottles until a kindly ‘word in the ear’ put an end to that, and the sock drawer suddenly blossomed ten fold. The latest research now shows that to aid depression, Champagne should be drank three times a week (glasses not bottles, but who’s counting?) and the National Health service is considering prescribing it. Now the same applies to Cava, much cheaper, and even Pancho Campo’s food and wine advice on the best in Spain (Gramona Imperial) will only set you back around sixteen small ones. We bought a bottle from El Corte Ingles last year, and uncorked it Christmas Day. His Laird-ship wasn’t impressed, and couldn’t tell the difference between the cheaper versions. This year’s man-made Christmas cake (not my job) will be interesting. The bottle of Veterano usually kept for cooking, was finally discovered with only

half an inch of its contents left within.

Asiatico coffees lovers, of course.

‘Aha, there’s a posh bottle of Martell in a gold box somewhere!’ I announced, scrabbling in a spare room wardrobe as the home-baker began panicking about soaking his nuts. Or was it fruit? On opening this little treasure (buried for years) we found a competition entry form. Win a trip to a Chateau. Closing date 1993.

So charge your glasses, wish yourselves and everyone else a merry festive season, and commence countdown to Christmas as of today...and have a lovely slice of cake to go with it. Hic.

I duly informed Martell, via their Facebook page, jokingly asking if it was too late to enter. They wanted to see photos. I snapped away. Hopefully Santa may bring a crate of it in return. Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

The sunshine is still lovely but the night-time temperatures are now chilly, and so are the early mornings when our dedicated maintenance team and volunteers still turn out! We continue our search for new volunteers: Even if you aren’t resident and just holiday here you are very welcome to join us: We offer bacon or sausage butties every Wednesday as an incentive! If you’d like to offer your services just get in touch with John, our Chairman. If you’re not able to join our working parties but you’d like to donate a raffle prize or plants, we’d love to hear from you; No offer of help is too small! We always have ongoing projects but please let us know if you have any particular task you would like us to tackle in your area? This month there has been major weed clearing, both in our streets and on the verges, while the ground is soft after the heavy rains. New plants planted and railway sleepers have been collected and positioned, twenty two tons of new gravel spread and the Bolnuevo Garden Centre have replaced two broken and five cracked planters. We have also moved all our tools and equipment from its’ previous store, and a huge thank-you goes to Greg and Liz Green for the free use of Sensol Villas underbuild over the past three and a half years. We’d like to ask any new homeowners on Lower ‘C’ to consider joining our community Maintenance Scheme; our members pay just Euros15 per quarter to improve the whole area down to the Rambla, great value as Green Fingers have made a vast difference to the look of our streets: gravelled verges, dustbins off the roads, water butts installed, landscaped areas with benches, many new plants and trees now becoming established and repairs to kerbs and roads where needed. The Maintenance scheme and our volunteers have undertaken these tasks only until the local council totally take over responsibility for Camposol ‘C’ and it’s lovely to look around our sector now,

with its’ planted areas - it is no longer looking very overgrown and ‘forgotten’ even though some of the work has been backbreaking! Please give some thought to becoming a member and enable the good work to carry on keeping your streets cleaned, swept and sprayed regularly, and know that you are giving your support to making ‘C’ one of the nicest areas to live, please contact John or your local representative. We have sold most of the tickets for our Christmas Meal & Dance on 11th December at the Golf Club with live music from Abba Dabba Do!, but there may still be a few available as this goes to print; please contact John on 634 325 427. Please also remember the Carol Service at ‘C’ Sector Triangle on 18th December at 6.15pm with free mulled wine and mince pies provided by Green Fingers! Our chalkboards, Facebook and website has more news http://www. greenfingersgardenandsocialgroup.com/

Camposol B CLEAN Gardening group Well, yet another year has nearly passed us by, and some of us over a certain age feel that they don’t seem to last as long as they used to! It seems only recently that we were out pruning the dual carriageway palm trees and already it is nearly time to do it all over again! It has been a busy time for all the gardening groups and I think most would agree that Camposol has been looking blooming wonderful this year! As the housing market improves we are seeing many new faces. If you are a newly arrived resident of B Sector and would like to join us in helping to keep Camposol looking great, we would love to welcome you into our group

of ‘B Clean’ volunteers. We are a legally registered group who, through subscriptions, other donations and regular working activities, aim to keep B sector looking great. If you haven’t seen our Leaflet and/or would like to know more about the scheme, please contact us. (Details below) Current Progress The trees that have not survived will be replaced by Pedro from the Garden Centre in the next few weeks. The Oleanders that have given us such a splendid display over the past months - presently looking a little sad after pruning - will soon recover, now that they are well established. Gravelling and planting alongside roads continues as planned, and Helen has been out painting many of the concrete seats provided by the council. We hope shortly to complete clearing the scrubland, lay membrane and gravel to the remaining length of road continuing on from B7 ending at the B9 roundabout. We also intend to carry out similar work along the perimeter road leading from B20 to the Bridge. Green Waste Bins Despite our best efforts to keep the area surrounding the Green Bin on the lower Commercial Centre car park tidy, there are some apparently mindless people (I’m trying to be polite here!) who think it is OK to dump their rubbish alongside the bin when it is full. The council contractors will not remove this overflow! So… who does? and “Who cares?” some may ask. Well, we do - and, we and the residents living nearby are getting pretty fed up with it! If the bin is full - please, either take

your rubbish back home or take it to the ECO Park: Directions:- drive to the big roundabout at the end of the RM3, turn right and the Eco centre is about 1 km on the right (clearly marked). Please note that the bins are provided for resident’s garden green waste only. They should not be used by professional contractors who dump large trailer loads of rubbish to avoid visiting the ECO Park. Dumping waste onto the Car park is the same as ‘Fly Tipping’ and identified offenders are likely to find themselves reported to the local authority. Note: We have requested additional bins and more frequent collections. ‘B Clean’ meetings are held at ‘Trevi Bar’ on last Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. Please join us and let us know what you want us to do to improve B Sector. D Community and Gardening Group

Newsletter November 2015

On the 5th October we held our AGM and members were voted on to the Committee as follows: Ken D’Angelo Chairman, Sam Woods - Vice Chairman, Anita Girvan - Treasurer, Linda Crook - Community Secretary, the minutes are viewable on the website. It is with regret that we were informed on the 6th November Keith Wilcock passed away, Keith was one of our gallant pothole volunteers, he will be sadly missed by the team, and the community. Our thoughts go out to Chris and their family at this time. . Our dedicated band of potholers have been out and about (usually on a Thursday) doing minor repairs to the roads around D sector (using a fair amount of the group funds); we will be keeping you informed on the community web site with further information. Over a period of time we have installed trenches to divert water brining down mud on to the roads, unfortunately we will have to take a further look at these trenches as in places they are not working as we expected (work in progress) Due to the limited number of volunteers, the gardening team is going to concentrate on maintenance of existing gardens, roundabouts, Jubilee Garden and the dual carriageway. These areas all need

weeding and general tidying up. If anyone would like to be involved in this work, PLEASE check our community website or community Facebook page, details will be posted where the work will be carried out each week. We still desperately need volunteers and would be grateful for any help you can afford us. We are changing the day of working from Fridays to Wednesdays in the hope that it will suit more people. Over the summer period, unfortunately we have lost some plants due to heat, we did try our best with the watering but didn’t succeed with keeping them alive, also at the top of D25 there were a number of dead conifers, these have now been cut down and removed. Signs have been purchased by the group (requested by membership); one sign has

been placed on the golf club roundabout giving directions to C and D sectors and a sign locating the D Sector map for new arrivals and contractors. More signs have had to be printed and located around the community area for the few dog walkers that do not clear up their dogs mess. We are looking at starting competition shortly for our members to use the D30 Pétanque court and have a bit of fun, there is a great possibility we can get a league up and running with other groups. Information will be posted on the community web site.

Keeping your skin healthy this Winter I first thought that I would continue to write about the stresses of our lifestyles and the way in which we over run and deplite our energies especially in these Winter months when our energy levels are less and we need to conserve our energies more. When we are continually in that mode of heightened state we can not cope , everything is just to much for us .. As I was trying to type this I noticed that my fingers were sore and then noticed they were cracked and Split.

Health &Wellbeing 3. Lubricate skin with essential oils or pure cocoa butter after showering or bathing. Cocoa butter is a natural alternative to petroleumbased moisturizers. Apply the oils or moisturizer to the skin when it’s slightly damp. That way, moisture becomes trapped in the skin rather than evaporating in the air. 4. Exfoliate dry skin with a gentle body scrub as often as needed. Two to three times weekly should be plenty. Cox suggests grinding up one-half cup of pine nuts in a blender or food processor and mixing it with two tablespoons of light oil. Then rub the mixture all over your body in gentle circular motions, and rinse off. 5. Use a humidifier to keep moisture in your home and office air, or keep a bowl of water on your radiators to add moisture to the air. The higher the heat indoors, the less humidity there will be. (It’s the humidity that helps keep skin from drying out.)

So if your skin has been dry lately, you’re not alone. Cold weather, harsh winds, and dry indoor air all conspire to suck the moisture out of skin during the winter months, leaving it dry, cracked, and scaly. Winter dryness strikes where your oil glands are weakest. Our cheeks, arms, and legs have almost no sebaceous oil glands and are therefore drier in winter months. And since the skin on your hands is thinner than in other places it needs extra protection and care. Cold weather and winds can also aggravate your skin, particularly if you’re a vata (already prone to dry skin).

I had recently seen an article in one of the Yoga Magazines about protecting the skin in these Winter months and thought it would be best this month to share something like this with you all.... In order to keep the skin hydrated in Winter these six points are recommended.. 1. Avoid taking long hot baths or showers, or using saunas, during the winter months. Hot water can rob the skin of its moisture. Instead, use moderate-temperature water for shorter periods of time. 2. If you take a bath, add a few drops of essential oil to the water to help moisturize the skin. Jasmine, chamomile, or ylang-ylang is good for pittas; neroli, lemon, or geranium is optimal for vatas; and rosemary, peppermint, or clary sage is ideal for kaphas.

6. Check the labels on your skincare products, and avoid toners and other products that contain alcohol, which can dry out the skin. Opt instead for products that contain less-drying astringent ingredients such as witch hazel. Skin Food No matter how well you take care of your skin during the winter months, if you’re not eating the right foods your skin still won’t be soft, smooth, and healthy-looking. What you need: Drink at least nine cups of hydrating fluids daily (including water). Coffee, tea, and soda don’t count. (Caffeinated drinks are diuretics, meaning they can trigger the body to eliminate water.) Indulge in watery foods, such as soups— and avoid dry, crunchy, salty foods as often as possible. Dry foods may help further dehydrate the skin.

400 IU daily). A diet that’s too low in fat—particularly these essential fatty acids—will result in skin that’s lackluster, dry, and prone to chronic skin problems such as eczema. Relax into a Healthy Complexión Sometimes skin dryness is attributed to more than just a seasonal change. When it’s red, itchy, and irritated despite daily care, you may have a chronic skin condition. The most common ones—eczema, psoriasis, and rosácea - all are aggravated by stress. Stress aggravates the dry skin, which leads to itchy skin), thereby increasing symptoms of that imbalance. To help keep these skin conditions under control, practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and tai chi regularly. A recent studies conducted found that when added to a treatment regimen, meditation helped psoriasis clear up more quickly. Got Dry, Itchy Skin? When your skin is dry and itchy—and in need of some relief—add some licorice tea to your bathwater, suggests Pratima Raichur, author of Absolute Beauty(HarperPerennial, 1997). The licorice acts as a natural cortisone treatment. You can also add neem or comfrey decoctions (tea) to bathwater, as they can also help soothe the skin. Tips for Lips (and Cuticles) Both the lips and cuticles can get dry and scaly during the winter months. To keep lips soft, dry brush them several times a week with a toothbrush; doing so helps exfoliate the dry skin. Then apply, as often as needed, vitamin E oil, unsalted butter, or ghee directly to the lips. For cuticles, soak them for 5 to 10 minutes daily (or several times weekly) in olive oil lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es

formation of tumors.

What is it? Echinacea is a coneflower that is found most commonly in eastern and central North America. It is typically found in early-to-late summer in the open wooded areas and prairies. Echinacea was used by the North American Indians and the early settlers as an anti-microbial for relief of infections, pain, and to reduce symptoms of snake bite and anthrax. Others have used Echinacea for relief of scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. The advent of antibiotics, and the massive marketing and prestige that went behind this new medical technology, reduced the usage and understanding of herbal medicine. The Germans picked up Echinacea in the 20th century and began to study it, performing numerous studies that have demonstrated Echinacea’s effectiveness at enhancing immunity. Echinacea Blocks Pathogenic Invasion Humans and animals utilize hyaluronic acid to form healthy stable cells. Most pathogenic organisms utilize the hyaluronidase enzyme to destroy hyaluronic acid and allow easy access into the cells and tissues of the body. Echinacea has a constituent by the name of echinacin B which has been shown to inhibit the enzyme hyluronidase, thus blocking the pathogens ability to enter the cell and cause damage. Echinacea has three unique nutrients that synergize to enhance immune activity. These nutrients include polysaccharides, alkylamides and cichoric acid which together provide a strong activating force on white blood cells that destroy pathogenic organisms and tumor growth. The Most Common Uses of Echinacea

Most herbalists recommend Echinacea to treat ear infections, athlete’s food, hay fever, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, Echinacea has been used to reduce vaginal yeast infections, and slow healing inflammation associated with skin wounds. body. Proper Immune Coordination We have two major parts to our immune response. These two major parts of the immune system are the TH-1 pathway, which produces an immediate response, and the TH-2 pathway, which produces a delayed response. The TH-1 response is marked by T cells while the TH-2 pathway is built on antibody formation and identification. The key to a strong immune system is balance and coordination. The TH -1 system is classified by Killer T cells, T helper cells, and T suppressor cells. When we have too many T suppressor cells our immune system is too weak and we get colds/fevers/flu. When the Killers are too many or the helpers and suppressors are too few, we end up with a poorly coordinated immune response that damages our own tissue. This is commonly seen in autoimmune disorders. When the TH-2 system is dominant the body tends to rely on it when it is threatened in any way. A common example is allergies. When we are exposed to the allergen, the TH-2 system goes into overdrive causing a massive inflammatory response. This is due to poor balance between the TH-1/TH-2 system and then a poorly coordinated TH-2 response that creates a systemic inflammatory reaction in response to a very minor threat. Echinacea is a TH-1 Pathway Enhancing Herb TH-1 pathway enhancing herbs include Astragalus, Echinacea, Licorice root, Lemon balm, & pomegranate among others. The TH-2 boosting herbs include pine bark, green tea, grape seed, and resveratrol. Immune modulating herbs, such as turmeric, boswellia, and ginger, help to enhance immune coordination through the entire body. To put this information into action, you can access how you feel and what you notice after an immune pathway challenge. To do this, try taking a large dose of a TH-1 boosting herb. If you feel wonderful and your immunity improves, there is likelihood that you may have a pre-existing TH-2 dominance. If you feel terrible and are massively inflamed, there is a likelihood you are TH-1 dominant and that you over-stimulated this pathway. Try balancing with TH-2 boosting herbs and immune modulators. Keep a journal and see what imbalances you may have. This will give you an advanced level of knowledge of your own individual tendencies and will allow you to stay healthy and balanced throughout your life. By Juan Basilio Galindo Tovar (Pharmacist).

Stormy weather Following a few unsettled days when the weather had not been so kind to us golfers, but loved by the local farmers, the society members set off for the monthly stapleford to Altorreal Golf Course. The skies were leaden when we arrived but by the time our first tee arrived the cloud was beginning to break, and by the time the first group reached the 3rd hole the sun had started to shine. On a course which is quite tight on some fairways, open and tree lined on others, a good day’s golf was now in prospect. The fairways have a semi rough which can take some getting out of without a little effort.

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron FC’s impressive form continued into November with a run of five wins and two draws from seven games taking them to within touching distance of a play off place. After a dreadful start to the season with only one point earned from the first four games, new coach Victor has certainly managed to mould together a team capable of playing good football and winning games.

On returning to the clubhouse the scores were checked and Geoff Sharp (pictured)

The new look side with only Juan Andreo, Enrique and Alfonso remaining from last season’s promotion winning squad have already beaten league leaders SFC Minerva and high flying Cartagena and held second placed Jumilla to a 1-1 home draw in a game they could and should have won. The squad has strength and depth and, with a clever rotation system Victor, is managing to keep the players happy by giving as many as possible a fair run in the team. He normally makes two or changes per week without weakening the team and this policy should reap rewards later in the season if the squad can be kept together to cover for injuries and suspensions. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Spain to extend car subsidy scheme to mid-2016 The Spanish government, facing an election next month, plans to extend a car purchase subsidy scheme that has massively boosted sales until the middle of next year, a source at the Industry Ministry said. Spain has renewed subsidies several times in recent years, and car sales have grown for the past 26 months in a row, helping contribute to an economic recovery after a prolonged slump. The plan, which offers consumers funds toward a new car when turning in an old one, was last extended by the government in May with a 225 million euro ($238 million) package. The program was due to expire at the end of the year but will be extended until July 31, 2016, using leftover funds from the May package, the ministry source said Monday. The source confirmed comments made by Industry Ministry official Begona Cristeto earlier on Monday and reported by Spanish media. Spain’s parliament has been dissolved ahead of the Dec. 20 election, but cabinet ministers can still approve some measures. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s center-right People’s Party (PP) is starting to gain ground in some opinion polls, though still seems far from securing another majority. The car scrapping scheme aims to reduce the number of older vehicles on the road, improving road safety and supporting the car industry. Consumers get about 750 euros in subsidies per car from the state, in addition to similar discounts from car manufacturers as part of the scheme.

VW cars can also cheat European emissions tests, BBC learns A laboratory test carried out for BBC Panorama shows that Volkswagen diesel cars programmed with a “defeat device” can cheat official European pollution tests, as well as tests in the US. The company told the BBC it believes this is the first time the cheating software has been filmed

time. Starting with a cold engine, in a lab that’s between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade, it’s then driven for six miles on a rolling road, no turns, with exactly the same gear changes at exactly the same times, and all within a speed at two km/h either side of set limits. The whole thing, including some idle time, always lasts 20 minutes and 20 seconds. So, we then tried to trick the computer into thinking it was out of the lab, by simply accelerating hard a few times, taking it above motorway speeds. Straight afterwards, we ran the Euro 5 test again, but with one simple difference. We started with a hot engine this time. The same car failed, spectacularly. Emitting 435 mg/km of NOx (remember the EU limit is 180 mg/km). So, drive the same drive, but fool the car into thinking it’s on a real road, and it chucks out two-and-a-half times the amount of pollution as before. When we showed VW our results, they confirmed the car had been cheating. “With this software, it was possible for the vehicle to recognise laboratory test conditions and the engine control could switch over to emitting compliant nitrogen dioxide levels during the test cycle. “This would have been the likely condition in your test. As you ran the second test (described as a hot test) immediately afterwards, the vehicle did not recognise this as a test condition and changed its emission strategy.” The car industry has always said that pollution is worse out on the roads

in action. VW has admitted it used the device to rig tighter pollution tests in America. But it’s been more ambiguous about whether it used the same tactics to actively cheat official European tests. Panorama’s results suggest that it did. It could have huge implications for the company, which says it is still yet to determine whether the cheating software even breaks the law in Europe. VW has confirmed that 8.5 million European cars have the software, 1.2 million of them in the UK. The defeat device is a programme in the car’s computer that can work out when it is being tested in a laboratory, and then cut poisonous nitrogen oxide (NOx) gas pollution from the exhaust pipe. For years, this software allowed the company to pass strict US emissions laws yet still make a car that performed well on the road. Now it looks possible that VW was also cheating in Europe. A side-effect of cutting NOx can often be lower miles-per-gallon. Panorama took a VW Passat Blue Motion diesel to an accredited testing laboratory in the Czech Republic. No British lab we asked would let us in, but this lab is governed by the same rules and regulations as those in the UK and it regularly certifies new cars and engines for the European market. We also took a retired former government vehicle inspector, Ted Foreman, along to make sure everything was done by the book (a 280-page Carol and John book). because of bad driving, bad weather and hills. Panorama’s test suggests that cars are also to blame. This scandal has a long way to run. We still don’t know what might happen to all the “fixed” cars. Will they have a worse MPG for example? And we still don’t know how many billions of euros it’ll eventually cost the company.

It is also sometimes necessary for your lawyer and your financial adviser to work together to ensure that all the correct legal and financial steps are taken to ensure your wishes are carried out. Its important to know that you are discussing your situation with someone who can advise you about the consequences of inheritance tax and the inheritance procedure in each country. One major difference in Spain is that inheritance tax is paid by the inheritors of the Estate, as opposed to in the UK the inheritance tax is payable from the Estate itself. The only sure route to ensure that your assets in either country go to whom you wish is to make a Will in each country ie in Spain regarding your Spanish assets and a UK Will regarding your UK assets – and its important that they do not contradict each other. For a sensible conversation about a complicated subject, arrange a consultation with Shirley Ann Fisher

September Property Sales Concentrated in Four Autonomous Regions Estate agents across the country will confirm that the property market is making a strong recovery and that interest in Spanish property is higher than ever. For the last year this has been confirmed by official statistics, and lately the situation has become even better. Spain is seeing a spectacular turnaround in its higher end property market A renewed confidence amongst buyers, low prices and the Spanish banks’ willingness to offer competitive mortgages is attracting increasing numbers of new buyers in the country, according to a new analysis. In Spain’s major cities, international buyers are now beginning to compete against local buyers to secure the best properties in prime locations, according to the report from Lucas Fox covering the first six months of 2015. Indeed, Spain is seeing a ‘spectacular’ turnaround in its property market, according to the firm’s founding partner Alexander Vaughan. The report says that Barcelona is expected to be the most significant year of recovery for the prime residential property market in the past seven years. Prices have stabilised in the past 12 to 18 months, and international interest for turnkey properties is forcing up demand, alongside renewed confidence amongst local buyers. In Maresme, whereas in previous years local buyers accounted for as little as

page 58

20% of Lucas Fox’s sales enquiries, this figure is now closer to 50% and there has been a substantial increase in the number of sales transactions to local clients. The report also says that on the Costa Brava, sales in the first half of the year have been dominated by Northern European buyers with British, French, Swiss, Dutch and Scandinavian buyers being the most active. On Ibiza, while national averages of property prices continued to decline slightly throughout 2014 and are levelling off in 2015, average prices in Ibiza have seen increases since the start of 2013. In Marbella, sales have increased across the region, leading to a shortage of good quality properties in prime locations. Turnkey projects are selling so fast that Lucas Fox is seeing regular price increases of new off plan properties coming onto the market while in Valencia, the first quarter of 2015 has seen an increase of 14% for property re-sales.

Madrid continues to attract more and more investment from both national and international investors. Lucas Fox data suggests that 60% of clients buy for investment purposes and 20% for the so called golden visa that allows nonEuropean Union citizens to live in the country if they invest in real estate.

This month we have been fortunate to have only a few new arrivals into the charity. The first was a little female dog that was brought into our shop in Mazarron. Now normally we would not have taken this girl, she would be kept by the owner whilst we put her on our web site and tried to find her a home..... low and behold within 24 hours she had stole the hearts of an English couple in the UK ... they have now passed the home check inspection, Layla is now with us awaiting her transport date. Thanks Melanie won’t be long before Layla has got her feet under your table. Update on the two ponies rescued last month. We were aware that the little lad had several wounds to his hind quarters. The vet examined it and found it to be a dog bites .OMG!!!!!!! The wounds were so deep that the bone could be seen, after a couple of weeks washing and applying cream, and nightly injections the wound has all but closed, but then the mother was bitten by an insect and her back leg was so swollen that again the vet was called. He drained the very large blisters and another course of injections for the infection. It’s not easy giving injections to any equines ....we managed, not something I’d like to repeat again.... the hooves really hurt lol Breathing a sigh of relief, we went into the paddock the following Saturday evening to find that Little Ronnie, one of our foals had a very swollen front leg. The vet was called and viewed photographs of him and decided that little Ronnie needed x-rays. This was Halloween, the night before the All Hallows day holiday. But he came out and checked Ronnie. The x-rays shows a small fracture of the leg and bite marks further down where he and one of two of the other donkeys have been playing we can only assume the hard play had caused the injury. Well guess what, he needed an anti/ inflammatory powder in his feed and a course of antibiotic injections also. He was on stable rest for two days but became so distressed that we had to let him out with the others. As the break was not completely through the bone “greenstick” type he is able to walk on it. The swelling has now subsided and he is back to his usual self. As you can imagine callout fees for the vets are not cheap, we would appreciate any items you no longer need to sell in our shops, as this is our main source of income, so anything that you do not want please think of the donkeys here at AAR,, you can drop donations in any of our shops or I am on B sector car park Camposol every Monday between 11.30 and 1.30 for collections, We will also collect larger items. DATE FOR YOUR DIARY...... Monday 14 December we will be holding our 6th annual sherry and Mince Pies on the car park we will also bring two of our gorgeous donkeys for you to have a chat too!! , but don’t forget your carrots and apples, and in exchange we will give you a mince pie and a tipple....See you there AAR would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to Robbie and his fantastic team at the journal for their continued support. We would like to wish all our readers, supporters, and friends a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. We look forward to and bright 2016

Recently at The Los Amigos Golf Society Evening, we were very honoured to accept a cheque for 1000 euros from them. Their kind and generous donation has enabled us to purchase much needed articles for the youngest of our clients in form of nappies and baby wipes etc. We thank them for their cooperation and support. We also thank the wonderful Welcome Group, who recently donated a multitude of toiletry bags stuffed full with goodies for our Christmas Gift Appeal to present to our teenage boys and girls together with a kind donation of 150 euros, with which shampoo and shower gel have been purchased. We will be distributing gifts at the beginning of December for Christmas and in January too, for the 3 Kings celebration. It is not too late to donate! Call the number below for drop off points or to arrange collection. As always, we need donations of toiletries such as shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, deodorant and ladies sanitary wear; popular food items include tinned fruit, tinned vegetables and packets of dehydrated soup. Children’s clothing is also in high demand as usual. We are truly thankful for your continued support for our worthwhile cause to help those in our area who are less fortunate than ourselves. Each month we have more families to add to our client list, all of whom come to us for help via Mazarrón Social Services. Throughout the year, we gratefully receive deliveries from ‘el Banco de Alimentos de la Region de Murcia’ of several tons of food for us to distribute in the local area. However, we do still have to buy many further supplies to add to this basic provision. Our outreach team work together to provide for our clients in Mazarrón and the countryside around Cañada de Gallego, supplying them the basic sustenance to help them survive, as well as other essential items such as toiletries, warm clothes, shoes, blankets and furniture. We thank all those volunteers who give their time freely and also the people who make their generous donations to enable us to continue to do what we do. We will be celebrating this festive season with our Christmas Dance on Saturday 12th December at the Club House Camposol. Entertainment to be provided by Martin Ross. Please call 634 357 137 for more information. Season’s Greetings to you all and thank you for your continued support
