JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome the February 2015 edition of The Journal! This month we have been working hard to create yet another fun filled, action packed magazine for you to enjoy, crammed with topical news and features. We would like to offer a quick reminder (mainly to our male readers) that this month we will be celebrating Valentines Day, the one day of the year that strikes fear in to the hearts of all men. We know the importance of getting that special someone in our life the correct card, flowers, chocolates, gift, and of course a romantic candle lit dinner. If we get any aspect of this even slightly wrong, then we can expect to face the wrath of our loved one! So if you forget, don’t say we didn’t remind you! If like many men, you struggle for ideas to please your significant other, then fear not! This month’s magazine has plenty of Valentines inspiration help make it a special day! Also ,for all the bargain hunters, this month we have some very special and exclusive information. The Residencial Espuna Garden Centre in Totana is sadly closing down. The good news for our readers however, is that they are having an “Everything Must Go” clearance sale with up to 70% off of everything! Throughout the month of February all the existing stock will be liquidated, so our advice is to get there early in the month to get the pick of the bargains. The directions and location are on the advert later in the magazine. It’s actually really easy to find. Drive through Totana and up towards the Monastery, when you reach the Canal, turn right and drive along with the canal on your left, and you will find the garden centre on your right. Happy bargain hunting! This month we would like to welcome Jane’s Salon in Bolneuvo and Ratatouille Restaurant in Puerto De Mazarron to The Journal. Check out Jane’s advert for a fantastic Special Offer in the month of February, and if you want a special meal for Valentines Day, or any other day, take a look at the special menus that Antoine from Ratatouille has in store. Enjoy this month’s magazine, and make sure you show that special person in your life just how much you love them this Valentines Day! See you next month, Robert Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

35% of Spaniards Don’t Read Books

Over a third of Spaniards admit to “never” or “hardly ever” reading books, with nearly half of those people putting their lack of reading down to the fact that they are “not interested”. Spanish government research institute, the CIS, has been looking into the literary habits of Spaniards and the results make for sober reading. While 29 percent of people polled said they read books every day, or nearly every day, one in five people said they almost never did so, and a full 15 percent said they never read books. When people were asked by CIS why they didn’t read, four in ten said it was because they were “not interested” while 23 percent cited a lack of time. A further 13 percent put their lack of reading down to “bad vision”. The CIS study also shows that those Spaniards who do read get through an average of 8.6 books a year — far lower than in Finland where the average number of books read is 47, according to statistics. Historical novels (23.6 percent) are the preferred reading material of Spaniards, according to CIS, while nine percent like to get stuck into action novels, eight percent like to lose themselves in a crime novels and six percent plump for romantic novels. However, 50 percent of people admit to not having bought a single book in the last year.

Perhaps Spaniards prefer reading of the non-fiction variety, as over 40 percent read newspapers ‘every day’ or ‘nearly every day’. They also tend to prefer reading newspapers in paper format (64 percent) rather than in their online versions (29 percent). Spaniards seem to be a little bit slow on the uptake with digital reading; two thirds of people polled by CIS said they have never read an e-book. While books may not be the most popular form of entertainment in Spain, television is as popular as ever. The latest figures from 2013 show that Spaniards watch, on average, four hours of television a day.

Ex Boyfriend Jailed For Facebook Message

A man who was banned from getting in touch with his ex-girlfriend has had his appeal overthrown and will serve nine months in prison for commenting on her Facebook photo In October 2012 a specialized Domestic Violence court in Palma, Majorca passed a protection order against the man, which included not being allowed to contact his ex-partner by any means, including online. But only five days later the man left a sarcastic comment under his ex-partner’s profile picture on Facebook saying “showing them what you’ve got I see, babe (a la vete a enseñarlo guapa)”. Now, a court in Palma has overthrown the man’s appeal and confirmed he must serve nine months in prison for breaching the restraining order. The man had appealed his conviction, citing that the court could not prove who sent the Facebook message or that he had breached his restraining order. But the court in Palma said the man was “completely conscious” of the fact his Facebook message “was an infringement of the restraining order.”

Eta Lawyers Arrested In ‘Fraud’ Sting Police arrested 16 people connected to the terror group Eta with the detainees being investigated over possible crimes including tax fraud and money laundering. The arrests were part of an operation carried out in the Basque Country, Pamplona and Madrid,. Among those detained were 12 Eta lawyers and four ex-treasurers of the Eta prisoner support group Herrira. Detainees are accused of fraud against Spanish tax authorities, not paying value-added tax and money laundering in an operation being carried out in secret by Spain’s National Court. The detainees were also accused of exercising control over jailed Eta prisoners in 2012 and 2013 and for crimes associated with belonging to a terrorist organization, although this has not been confirmed. Among those arrested is Amaia Izco, also the national spokesperson for the leftist basque party, Sortu. The interior ministry said the operation was continuing and it would provide further details later on Monday. The operation came just hours before 35 people were due to go on trial in Madrid accused of membership of extreme left groups that campaign for Basque separatism. Two French nationals, Aurore Martin and Haizpea Abrisqueta, are among the accused along with veteran Basque independence leaders such as Juan Jose Petrikorena. Eta is blamed for killing 829 people in a four-decade campaign of bombings and shootings for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France. The group — which is considered a terrorist organisation by the Spanish government, the European Union and the United States — declared an end to its armed campaign in 2011.

Murcia Regional Government Want The Keys To Corvera

the new tender at the end of February. Meanwhile the Regional Government is waiting for a ruling from the Murcia High Court, to suspend the eight appeals which were presented by Aeromur the previous concession owner set up specifically to run Corvera. Bernabé hopes whatever the court’s ruling the departure of Aeromur can be friendly, but he understands both sides of the dispute could litigate at any time.

The regional councillor for public works, Francisco Bernabé, has met with his team with the objective of launching

The Regional Government wants to recover the installation as soon as possible, but this time they won’t call for the intervention of the Guardia Civil, which happened in September 2013. The new tender is likely to include the obligation to relocate the workers employed by AENA in the San Javier airport who want to change to Corvera. The winner will no longer have to put 182 million € on the table, but to pay the same amount in instalments over the length of the contract. Bernabé said yesterday if the new tender is settled by the end of this

summer the airport could become a reality before the end of the year. He added ‘there is no way back to Aeromur’.

The Anti-Drug Police Chief In Murcia Has Been Arrested For Drug Trafficking The police inspector and chief of the Anti-narcotics Group and provincial brigade of the Judicial Police in the main headquarters in Murcia has been arrested in a matter related to drug trafficking. In the operation another National Policeman from Murcia has also been arrested along with five more people, allegedly drug traffickers. The case has been developed by the Department of Internal Affairs, a unit dependent on the National Police which has the job to investigate any report which affects the force. The men were arrested Tuesday 20th January and according to reports, their activity did not affect the normal running of the police service in Murcia.

With prices for the AVE and longdistance train journeys being frozen for this year, it’s certain that many travellers will continue to pick travelling by rail over air travel, and with the news that it has been planned for the AVE to arrive at 10 new destinations this year, this method of transport will undoubtedly become more popular than ever before. While the AVE already has successful and profitable lines that connect the capital to places in the south like Seville and Alicante, the plan now is to make more connections with the forgotten north. Over 1,000 km of new lines will be constructed linking to 10 major destinations in 2015. This way, the AVE network will directly connect around 40 cities and span a total of 4,000 km, making it the longest network in Europe, and the second longest in the world only after China. This year, the high-speed train will advance through Castilla y LeĂłn to connect with Zamora, Palencia, Burgos and LeĂłn. These cities will also link to Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid, which are already in service, and cut down travelling time between Madrid and Galicia, for example, as the route becomes more direct. In the same way, by adding the connection to LeĂłn, travelling time between the capital and Asturias will also be shortened, as will that to Santander with the connection at Palencia, and travelling to the Basque Country with the new stop at Burgos. The Corredor MediterrĂĄneo in the east of the country will extend north and south up to CastellĂłn and Murcia, and in the south it will go as far as Granada and CĂĄdiz. The Department of Public Works has also announced that the Atlantic line will link Pontevedra and Vigo and the first foundation of the line to link Extremadura will also be laid down. This will connect Plasencia and Badajoz. As yet, no date has been given as to when these new services will be up and running, as it all depends on the construction and subsequent testing times. Nevertheless, almost threequarters of public works’ contracts were handed out to those involved with the construction of the new AVE lines with investment of almost 700 million euro.

THE MONTH OF LOVE IS HERE AGAIN! Valentine’s Day is a good excuse to treat your ladies (or gentlemen) and earn some brownie points. Now what do you do? A question so many men will be asking themselves. The norm is buying chocolates, flowers and taking your ladies out to dinner. How about thinking outside the box? Does your partner complain of back ache in the morning’s? Would a new Mattress be the answer? As the one you have is over 7 years old and sagging and not as supportive as it could be. Maybe as our bodies are a little older than they were when buying the last mattress it no longer suits the body we have and a memory foam mattress which is kinder to limbs and backs with our various aches and pains would be ideal. Some people say they think memory foam could be hot in the summer but we are now selling mattresses with memory foam which have a summer and a winter side. So you have memory foam for the winter and turn for the summer where there is a gel coating to help to keep you cool during the long summer nights. These mattresses are proving very popular. This is a present that you both could enjoy in

2015

more than ways than one! (Maybe I will leave this to the Actress and the Bishop!) We have many other different mattresses that you can try before you buy. We have a lot of Spanish mattresses and some English ones as well for you to choose from. There are mattresses ideal for the

rental market too. Now sometimes the base of the bed that you put your mattress on can affect the comfort of your mattress. We had one

customer where there divan base was some years old and parted in the middle allowing the mattress to sag. In this case a new base was required besides a new mattress. The same goes for sprung slatted bases if slatts break do get them repaired or buy a new base and extend the life of your mattress. If your bed is squeaking check the base out, there could be a problem lurking. Anyway no one wants to know what you get up to in bed, maybe jealous or what. Remember, buying a new mattress is a very personal thing and it has too suit your body. It is not something you can buy without trying it for comfort first. Let’s face it, you would not buy a pair of shoes without trying them first. Mattresses and shoes have a lot in common, you are in them for a long time and both items affect your back and comfort for the rest of the day. This statement has more meaning to it as you get older, so don’t be scared of trying your mattress before you buy. We do not have any hidden cameras in our showroom, this is to allow you to jump on and off mattresses with your partner to your heart’s desire and try out your different positions. Calm down now, I only meant sleeping positions. On that note it only leaves me to say have a Happy Valentine’s Day in whatever you do or buy for your loved ones and hope those brownie points were worth earning! Gentlemen remember you were reminded

Wellspring Wanderers

It was Wellspring Wanderers first outing of the New Year, and although our numbers were depleted with folk away on holiday, or poorly, a good crowd turned up to walk on a beautifully warm and sunny January day here on the wonderful Costa Calida. Following a great breakfast once again at Cat’s Bar on Camposol, we headed out in convoy to the Venta Romero Restaurant, near to the village of Cuevas De Reyllo. Leaving our vehicles there, we walked in a circuit through the lemon groves and the little hidden away hamlets and farms around the campo. We covered between five and six kilometers and it proved to be a great time of fun and fellowship for everyone. It was also good to welcome new walkers to the group and they really enjoyed the exercise and the friendship. On arrival back at the Venta Romero we completed our outing with refreshments, before heading off to our homes. It was a great Saturday out together and our thanks to Phil Hoggar for organizing yet another great walk. If you would like to join Wellspring Wanderers, or need more information on the group please call Phil on 660743603, or contact us via our Facebook page. Happy New Year everyone.

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure.

page 12

However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car.

booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www. lineadirecta.com

STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a

Lynn gave a very interesting talk full of hints and tips on how to make cut flowers last longer in the home. She also demonstrated how to make 3 beautiful bouquets which we raffled off at the close of the afternoon. It all looked so simple watching Lynn Karen had compiled a challenging quiz based on flowers of course we were all trying to see Jenny Wrights answers! The History of Valentines Day

Pre-Christian era In ancient Rome, 13, 14 and 15 February were celebrated as Lupercalia, a pagan fertility festival. This seems to be the basis for a celebration of love on this date. It was marked in a subtly different way in those days, however. According to Noel Lenski, classics professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, speaking in the National Geographic, young men would strip naked and use goat- or dog-skin whips to spank the backsides of young women in order to improve their fertility; an early IVF, if you will. Circa AD 197 A Christian known as Valentine of Terni is martyred in the reign of Emperor Aurelian. Little is known of his life, except that he was made Bishop Valentine of Terni of Interamna (now Terni)

page 16

in AD 197 and died not too long after. He was apparently imprisoned, tortured and beheaded on the Via Flaminia in Rome for his Christianity by the order of a Roman prefect with the oxymoronic name of Placid Furius. According to legend, he died on 14 February, but that is likely a later embellishment. Circa AD 289 19 Jan 2010 Another Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred, this time under Emperor Claudius. A priest or bishop in the city, he was apparently arrested for giving aid to prisoners. While in jail, he is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. According to another, later version, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal. In yet another, equally unlikely version, Claudius was claimed to have banned young men from marrying, so that they would make better soldiers, and Valentine was arrested for secretly carrying out weddings. Like his earlier namesake, Valentine of Rome is supposed to have died on 14 February, but – again – this is implausible.

www.thejournalspain.es

Circa AD 496 The then Pope, Gelasius, declared 14 February to be St Valentine’s Day, a Christian feast day. This is likely to have been an if-you-can’t-beatthem-join-them approach to the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia. AD 1382 Geoffrey Chaucer writes his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which is widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine’s Day to romantic love. Celebrating the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.” However, it is thought that this may have referred to 2 May, the saint’s day in the liturgical calendar of Valentine of Genoa – this would be a more likely time for birds to be mating in England. AD 1400 On St Valentine’s Day a court is opened in Paris, the High Court of Love, dealing with affairs of the heart: marriage contracts, divorces, infidelity, and beaten spouses. A few years later,

2015

Charles, the Duke of Orleans (a Frenchman, inevitably) writes the first recorded Valentine’s note to his beloved, while imprisoned in the Tower of London following capture at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. AD 1601 St Valentine’s Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that one William Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia’s lament in Hamlet: “Tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s day,/ All in the morning betime,/And I a maid at your window,/To be your Valentine.” Mid-18th century The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper. In 1797, the The Young Man’s Valentine Writer is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to massproduce them. AD 1847

2015

Following the English tradition, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, starts producing cards – using the newly available and much cheaper paper lace – in the United States. AD 1913 If you felt cynical, you might call this date the beginning of the end for St Valentine’s Day as a genuinely romantic event, and the start of its reinvention of a savagely imposed regime of sugar-coated tweeness designed to chisel spare cash out of lovers and would-be lovers worldwide: Hallmark Cards produce their first Valentine. Now the date is the flagship “Hallmark Holiday” - together with Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and so on, a series of celebrations notable more for the need to spend money than any heartfelt sentiment. AD 1929 The St Valentine’s Day Massacre. A savage and bloody event in itself – five Chicago gangsters lined up and murdered with machine guns, apparently at the behest of Al Capone – but at least it’s a break from the unending stream of saccharine that the history of St Valentine’s Day otherwise entails, and so is welcome here.

Mid-1980s The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect of the holiday on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery. The “tradition” takes off. AD 2009 Valentine’s Day generates an estimated 880 million pounds in retail sales in the United Kingdom. AD 2010 An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration after Christmas.

LLAMAS CHIMENEAS For over 30 years Llamas Chimineas

have been providing the highest quality log burners and installation service in the Mazarron area. Over the years technology has progressed and these days, not only do they fit and supply log burners, but they now offer a full range of efficient and economical Wood Pellet Stoves which are more environmentally friendly and efficient than a traditional log burner. Wood pellet stoves are generally smaller than a log burner. The bags of pellets are small and light, making them easier to carry and handle than firewood, and they can be purchased in small quantities, making it more convenient than buying a ton of firewood at a time. The wood pellets themselves are made from recycled compressed material which reduces the moisture content. This dry fuel creates more heat causing the pellets to burn hotter and cleaner than traditional firewood, giving off fewer emissions. Llamas Chimineas work only with quality manufacturers of Wood Pellet Stoves, such as Superior, MCZ,

The Key Points Of Spains New Penal Code

Corruption, bestiality, forced marriage: Spain’s new penal code looks at a wide range of offences. Spain’s ruling Popular Party passed the country’s new penal code in the lower house of parliament, without the help of the country’s major socialist opposition party, the PSOE. It must now be passed in the senate, where the PP enjoys an overwhelming majority. Here are several key points of the reform which has been over a year in the making. ‘Permanent prison’ Under the new penal code, those

page 22

convicted of serious crimes such as regicide or the murders of foreign heads of state can be sentenced to a form of life imprisonment. These prisoners will initially be sentenced to 25 to 35 years, after which time the sentence will be reviewed to see if inmates are ready to return to society. Serial killers, members of organized criminal gangs, those who commit genocide and those who commit crimes against minors will also fall under this regime. Opponents have criticized this reform which they argue goes against the spirit of the constitution and its focus on preparing prisoners for reintegration into society. Illegal party financing and corruption Under the bill anonymous donations to political parties above €50,000 are banned. The law also calls for fines equivalent to three to four times the amount of money that was illegally donated. If the donations surpass €500,000 — or just €100,000 if the money came from a foreign body — jail terms ranging from six months to four years could apply. The bill also stiffens penalties for public workers found guilty of fraud or influence peddling.

www.thejournalspain.es

The main opposition Socialist Party said the reform was “completely insufficient” since those who donate less than €500,000 will not go to jail. It points out that in the so-called “Gurtel” case, a massive bribes-for-contracts scheme that allegedly existed at the heart of the Popular Party, none of the accused donated more than €500,000. Finally, the new laws will give judges great powers to seize assets if they believe there is sufficient evidence these originate from illegal activity. Those charged with these crimes will also have to return money taken from the public purse before being granted parole. Public order crimes Under the reform, anyone found guilty of inciting crimes against the public order “through any means” can be handed a jail sentence of between three months to a year. Penalties for public order crimes carried out as part of a group will also be stiffened. Throwing a rock during a protest could be punished with a jail term of up to six years for example, while the penalty for threatening a police officer at a demonstration will also be hardened. No teachers with terrorist backgrounds This change is designed to stop people convicted of carrying out terrorist activities with the Basque separatist

2015

terror group Eta from working as classroom teachers. Sexual consent The age of consent will be raised from 13 to either 15 or 16. This has yet to be finalized and may be altered during the bill’s passage through the senate. This reform is part of a broad plan approved by the Spanish government to protect children from abuse and exploitation. Bestiality Crimes which cause domestic animals undue harm will be punishable with prison sentences of three months to one year under the new penal code, as will sexual exploitation. However, there will be no punishment for those who organize events such as cockfighting and dog fights. Expulsion of Europeans Spain will have the right to expel European citizens if those people pose a serious risk to public security or safety. New crimes Among the new crimes listed in Spain’s revised penal code are organizing a forced marriage, sexual harassment, and the unauthorized distribution of images of a person obtained without their consent. Spain will also adopt European laws on child pornography, the sexual exploitation of minors and human trafficking. Pardons The government will now be obliged to inform the parliament every three months about pardons granted or rejected.

Spanish police break up teen prostitution ring

further suspects with an interest in minors as well as more victims of sexual exploitation by the gang. Police launched an investigation in September 2014 after a 17-year-old Ecuadoran girl went missing. The girl’s parents told police that before disappearing she had “a high standard of living”, though she was not known to be working.

Police have broken up a prostitution ring offering the services of over 400 women, some of them minors, and have arrested 29 people. The ring recruited adult women and girls between the ages of 14 and 17 in a school and in nightclubs in Murcia, as well as over the Internet, to work in brothels, a ministry statement said.

Police found the girl living in an apartment in Murcia with other youths, including several other underage girls, where they were being exploited by the owners. The flat belonged to a prostitution ring run by three women, each of them operating a brothel apartment with its own prostitutes. The photobook allowed clients to order the services of prostitutes at any of the brothels. The network ran ads on the Internet looking for women to work as bartenders, maids or to look after elderly people, and would then try convincing those who replied to work as “masseuses”.

Police arrested 29 people as part of the operation, including three women suspected of running the ring, and several of their clients who would specifically ask for under-age girls. “The ring had put together a photobook which offered ‘a la carte’ over 400 women, including minors,” the statement said. Authorities did not say how many underage girls were featured in the photobook but the interior ministry said it had identified 12 such victims of the ring.

In some cases they tricked the parents of the minors recruited by pretending to be mothers looking for someone to look after their children. Prostitution is not illegal in Spain, but prostituting others for personal gain is against the law.

Spain Book Review

By Caroline Angus Baker

‘The Spanish Civil War: A Very Short Introduction’ by Helen Graham

page 24

The Oxford University Press has a series of short introductions to a vast array of subjects, and the Spanish Civil War version has been put together by Helen Graham, a professor at Royal Halloway, University of London. Putting together a short book on a massive subject would be no easy task. But when Paul Preston hails a book as ‘far and away the best short introduction to the Spanish Civil War’, the praise doesn’t get any higher. If a reader wished to start learning about the war, reaching for a hefty Preston, Thomas, or Beevor tome could be daunting, and the subject can drive even the most knowledgeable person to distraction. A Very Short Introduction is cut into seven sections. The book lays out the foundation in a short slice, no easy task, and dedicates a chapter to the early days of the war, explaining the reality of executions on both sides of the conflict and the vigilante-style operations Spain was running in the quest for power and freedom. The book manages to cover Franco’s rise to prominence through a combination of will and luck, as well as how Spain was won through the help of Hitler and Mussolini. With all these aspects, and the huge array of groups pushing their own agendas, the

war is impossible to simplify, yet the book gives the initial details without overwhelming readers. A Very Short Introduction lays out the people, the major events, the reality of Spain at the time, everything needed to help a newbie understand why Spain collapsed the way it did in 1936. This book is written in a simple style, without a strong voice but rather an academic view of the facts. This book has drawn criticism, especially from being marked as biased (which I dared to read), and, 1 ) being unbiased about a Spanish Civil War is nigh impossible, and 2 )those decrying the book as biased and rabidly left-wing seem to be free and easy with the facts themselves. The book may not jump up and down with a passion, and that is not its purpose; it is a clear and simplified version a horrendously difficult subject, and perfect for its initial goal. A Very Short Introduction was promised and delivered. Caroline Angus Baker is a Duendeloving Kiwi author of the ‘Canna Medici’ thriller series, and the ‘Secrets of Spain’ historical trilogy. Technology Electric Airplanes Are The Future

Electric aviation has been in experimental development for years, but now a US startup, European aerospace giant Airbus, and a Chinese aviation manufacturer are among those who believe electric airplanes are ready for the mainstream. If they make it happen, it could get a lot cheaper—and more pleasant—to learn to fly. “Electric airplanes will change everything when it comes to the cost of flying,” says George Bye, a Colorado-based serial entrepreneur who’s been involved in several aviation projects. His new company, Aero Electric Aircraft Corporation, plans to have its two-seat Sun Flyer ready for flight testing by

the summer. The solar cells on the wings provide extra power, and if you park the plane in the sun for a few days, they’ll fully charge the battery for free. Taking into account maintenance and fuel costs, the two-seat Sun Flyer will cost about 3€ an hour to operate, according to Bye, compared to 50€ an hour for a Cessna 172, a four-seat airplane frequently used for training. A

page 26

new Sun Flyer will sell for about 150,000€ to 180,000€ which may sound like a lot, but a new Cessna 172 sells for about

350,000€. “The bottom line is, we are interested in generating excitement about flying, and making it affordable,” says Bye. Bye hopes to be the first to market in the US with an electricpowered training aircraft fully certified by the FAA, in 2017 or sooner. He’s not the only one in the race. In April, Airbus revealed the E-Fan 2.0 batterypowered airplane. In July, the company said it plans to be first to market with an e-plane for flight schools, aiming to start deliveries in 2017. The twoseater, to be built in with French manufacturer Daher-Socata, will be able to stay aloft as long as two hours. That’s not much for commercial

www.thejournalspain.es

service, but it’s plenty for the training market, where most flights last about an hour and transporting passengers isn’t the goal. Once the plane lands, it’s easy to swap out depleted batteries for fresh ones and resume flying. By 2019, Airbus plans to also offer a four-seat hybrid version for personal transportation. It’s the first step in a 30-year plan to develop a 90passenger airliner with electric or hybrid propulsion, part of a grander vision to cut European carbon emissions by 75 percent by 2050. Electric aircraft are advancing in China as well, where construction has started on a plant that will manufacture two-seat Rui Xiang RX1E electric airplanes. The production line is

2015

expected to boot up early this year. The aircraft, developed at Shenyang Aerospace University, will fly as long as 90 minutes on a full charge. Private aviation has been slow to develop in China, where government rules make it difficult, but pressure is building to open the airways to promote economic development. If battery costs continue to decline and electric planes can spend more time in the air, it will grow harder to make the case for gasoline engines, at least for the training market, where flights are brief and you don’t need more than two seats. Besides the clear cost advantage, electric flight is just smoother and quieter, and maintaining an electric airplane is a lot less trouble, thanks to fewer moving parts. If learning to fly is on your to-do list, you might find the trainer planes of the not-toodistant future parked outside in the sun, powering up for your first lesson. some 60 million people lack sufficient potable water. The WarkaWater will cost around $1,000 to produce and requires no electricity. Vittori says it takes less than an hour to assemble the five modules into a finished tower, making it easily packed and moved as necessary. The practical goal is for the WarkaWater to become an efficient round-the-clock water production machine. But populating the landscape with alien towers is about more than just functionality, it’s about architecture. You can tell Vittori wanted to design something iconic, but beyond that is the tower’s potential to the social nexus of a village. With fabric canopies that stretch out like a peplum skirt, the towers could be a place where people gather to socialize and seek shelter from the sun, just as they would beneath a leafy Warka tree.

A Bamboo Tower That Produces Water From Thin Air

been doing this for as long as they’ve needed water, often with air wells. Often built as high-rising stone structures, air wells gather moisture from the air and funnel it into a basin for collection. The WarkaWater

The WarkaWater tower is an unlikely structure to find jutting from the Ethiopian landscape. At 30 feet tall and 13 feet wide, it’s not half as big as its namesake tree (which can loom 75 feet tall), but it’s striking nonetheless. The spindly tower, of latticed bamboo lined with orange polyester mesh, isn’t art—though it does kind of look like it. Rather, the structure is designed to wring water out of the air, providing a sustainable source of H2O for developing countries. Created by Arturo Vittori and his team at Architecture and Vision, the towers harvest water from rain, fog and dew. This isn’t a new idea—people have

functions in much the same way, using mesh netting to capture moisture and direct it into hygienic holding tank accessed via a Want to stand out spout. The company from the rest? claims the WarksWater can harvest 13 to 26.4 gallons of water daily. That’s less than most people flush away Low cost each day, but effective advertising a significant quantity in a “The Journal” country where

February’s ice and sleet, freeze the toes right off your feet. Possibly in Spain, too. One thing that will be ‘Frozen’ however is the winter fuel allowance for shivering ex-pats overseas. Do we ‘Let it go, let it go…?’ Some are standing up to it, but who knows what the outcome will be? This is an issue which has always maddened me. When Brits back home all seem to think I’m ‘doing it the wrong way around’ by spending winter with under floor heating and a thermostat, while they seem to think Spain is sunny all year round. I’ve driven along yelling at the usually loveable Jeremy Vine on radio two during past discussions on this subject, hurled abuse at the increasingly obnoxious Matthew Wright when it’s been queried on his TV show, and muttered at the stupidity of some folk who think its ceiling fans and bikinis all year round. ‘Tipping up’ one January not long after completion, I’d never been so shocked in my life. ‘What’s that?’ I pointed at a stream of ice skating down the street. Someone up the hill had washed their

car. Worse was to come. The pool installers, knowing we wouldn’t be back for some time, had uncoupled the water supply. Opening the door on a freezing room with no form of heating whatsoever, I began to shake with cold, only to find the electric was also off. ‘Cortado’ was the clue, stuck on the meter box outside. Emergency; which service please? Friends, neighbours, countrymen, who we barely knew. The neighbours weren’t yet in residence, so friends stepped into the breach and sold us an unwanted wheeled gas heater, for which we needed a gas bottle, and to sort out the electric. This was pre ‘Preguntas y Mas’ days. Pre Facebook days. The good old days. How we laughed. Never again, I swore, would I visit in winter. It took all day to get the heat source sorted, with two trips down to the Repsol people (who wanted to physically examine the fire so we had to go back and get it) and until the next day to get the power back on. We slept that night, practically in our overcoats, and had to brush our teeth with bottled water as we couldn’t get hold of the builders to come and reattach what needed reattaching. Our kindly ‘complete services’ woman had furnished Iberdrola with the wrong account information and we’d been duly disconnected, had to pay up next morning with a hefty fee on top, while she smiled wanly and suddenly couldn’t speak English when I suggested she pay the reconnection fee. Never have I been so glad to see ‘a man’ appear at 4.45pm to flick the switch to

illuminate us. Oh how we laughed. We’d headed for a nearby restaurant that first night to eat, and sit by their fire until the last minute, before heading back to a freezing bed. Roughing it, I suppose you’d call it. Never again. Ever.

NEW RESPONDERS COMPLETE THEIR TRAINING FAST are very proud of their record of having a team on duty 24/7, every day of the year since our first duty on 1st June 2011, however, last year we were getting very close to not having enough volunteers to maintain this cover. A call went out to the people on Camposol and the response was fantastic! On 14th October 2014 we held an Induction Day to inform interested parties all about how we operate. As a result of this drive 18 Camposolers turned up on the day and were given an overview of what we do and what would be expected of them if and when they became part of the team. Information packs handed out, questions answered and refreshments taken, all we could do was to wait and see how many would turn up to commence training the following week.

Los Palacios Gardening and Community Group.

After a busy 2014, a well earned rest over Christmas and the New Year, the group

one of our very active Palm Troopers passed away suddenly on New Years Day. John Lysaght was a true gent and a great workhorse for the group. John will be missed greatly, but we will continue to see the results of his work. We also saw the “passing” of one of our previous chairman, Steve Gash, who worked tirelessly for the group before having to retire due to ill health. Los Palacios Gardening and Community Group.

‘D’ Sector Community Group The groups next AGM will take place on Tuesday 03 February at 1100, and is being held at Mariano’s. We will come away from this meeting with a list of objectives to see us through 2015. Following on from the many “projects” achieved in 2014, the group will continue to create a great environment for us all to live in and enjoy.

has regained their momentum. Here are a few photos showing the completed work of the area you see as you come on to Los Palacios, Sector A. This is just one example of the hard work that the volunteers have achieved. It’s now “full steam ahead” for 2015.

Work is already underway with John Pellett having been out “processionary caterpillar hunting” throughout January, and, along with the Palm troopers, will continue to do so over the coming weeks. If you are out on A and spot any nests please let one of our volunteers know. Harry Pearson continues to liaise with Ismael to ensure the council proceed with all local improvements and Pauline Pearson and her ladies have now “moved in” to their new “library. “ Books are available to buy at the bargain price of 3 books for 2€ and thanks to the new cabin, it is now far easier to find what you are looking for, and if the weather isn’t being kind you can step inside and take shelter whilst you browse. Weed killing continues across all park areas and every street on A is being covered too.

"The Name You Can Trust"

Whilst all members of our group work hard, I’m sure our volunteers will agree that they play hard too, so don’t be shy! If you have just an hour a week free and would enjoy being part of our “gang” you can ask our volunteers about the group on a Thursday morning by the post room whilst they’re shaking their buckets!! If you’re interested to know what the group get up to, you’ll find information on our white board at the bottom of the stairs opposite the entrance to the post room. Lastly, it is with deep sadness to inform you that

I would like to start this article by letting everyone know that some our Christmas Decorations were stolen Christmas Eve. Whoever did this, I hope you feel very happy with the pathetic stash you have STOLEN from a group of people who only want to improve our environment. The monthly meeting held on the 12th January was attended by 35 people, which is a sharp rise based on previous meetings. The following projects were discussed and action taken. Moving concrete blocks to D25 and D24 to stop dumping of rubbish. Skips are still required around the sector and request is to be made to Ishmal to get these delivered as soon as possible. At the top of D11 the curb stones have been smashed and new stones will be laid. Mud is to be moved from D11 and this is to be chased up, but meanwhile the Council road sweeper has cleared a lot of this mud. Antonia is to start from D26 and will weed the whole of the perimeter of D Sector. On Friday 15th January a party will be clearing the exposed black pipes in the dual carriageway. After the damage caused by the gota fria, more gravel will be laid on the pétanque courts on D10 and on D20 The central reservation on the dual carriageway is at the moment being sprayed because of weeds then a party will start taking the weeds away. D Sector have purchased a new vehicle, after the previous vehicle was destroyed in the gota fria. The charge of hiring the van and the trailer is 15 euros. The buckateers continue with their good work, in all weathers, and we would like to thank everyone who donates. The next D Sector meeting will be on February 2nd at 4.00pm in the Clubhouse. Linda Crook Press Officer

Camposol ‘C’ Greenfingers Gardening and Social Group This month we are happy to announce the 3rd Anniversary of our Maintenance Scheme! We thank everyone who has joined the scheme and paid a little each month to cover costs: each payment of only 5 Euros has meant there’s been a vast difference to the streets of Lower

‘C’: regular pavement and road repairs, gravelled verges, dustbins off roads, many plants established…It’s lovely to walk around areas which are no longer overgrown, though some of the work has been hard! Membership is really making a difference so please get in touch if you would like to join? We’d also like to continue to keep ‘C’ tidy so we ask, if you have a pet, please clear up after it and keep our area a pleasant place to stroll around, thanks. Spring is well and truly on the way now, with lovely sunny days and cold nights; our workers are up and out early, clearing the streets once more - If they’re in your area please offer your support: spare cash in buckets, even hot drinks and biccies are appreciated. We’re always looking for volunteers; even if you’re not resident and just holidaying here, you’re most welcome - We offer bacon/sausage

sarnies every Wednesday as incentive! Please contact John, our Chairman, on 634 325 427. If you’re unable to offer physical work but can donate raffle prizes or plants, we’d love to hear from you. No offer’s too small and thanks to everyone for their donations, and to anyone who has taken the time to adopt or maintain and water any plants and verges near their homes. This month, edges of raised potholes have been tarmacced, yet more railway sleepers(donated by JML builders; thanks Jay!) laid along the gravel edges near the rambla bridge, kerbs repaired, raised manholes concreted and streets on Lower ‘C’ sprayed with weedkiller as part of our ongoing programme. However, in contrast it’s with sadness we have to mention that over 3000 litres of precious water was let out from the water butts at the bottom of

the dual carriageway and these have now been padlocked. If anyone can guide us in confidence to the culprits, we would love to hear from you. Now our hard work continues into our 4th year with the planning of new projects which will improve our area even more; if you know of any areas needing attention, please get in touch! One of our tasks is to replace the trees and plants which have not survived our extreme weather: the arid, hot Summer and the recent surprisingly hard frosts! As we go to print, a few tickets are still available for our Race Night on 6th February at the Golf Club House; come along and join in the various games and have a flutter! Please check chalkboards, Facebook and website for any more information or visit our website; http:// www.greenfingersgardenandsocialgroup.

12 Health Benefits Of Garlic “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Those are famous words from the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, often called the father of Western medicine. He actually used to prescribe garlic to treat a variety of medical conditions. Here are 11 health benefits of garlic that are supported by human research studies. 1. Garlic Contains a Compound Called Allicin, Which Has Potent Medicinal Properties It is closely related to onions, shallots and leeks. Throughout ancient history, the main use of garlic was for its health and medicinal properties. Its use was well documented by all the major civilizations… including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and the Chinese. 2. Garlic Is Highly Nutritious, But Has Very Few Calories Garlic also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients. In fact, it contains

Health &Wellbeing a little bit of almost everything we need. Garlic is low in calories and very rich in Vitamin C,Vitamin B6 and Manganese. It also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients. 3. Garlic Can Combat Sickness, Including the Common Cold Garlic supplementation is known to boost the function of the immune system. If you often get colds, then adding garlic to your diet could be incredibly helpful. Garlic supplementation helps to prevent and reduce the severity of common illnesses like the flu and common cold. 4. The Active Compounds in Garlic Can Reduce Blood Pressure Cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes are the world’s biggest killers. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most important drivers of these diseases. High doses of garlic appear to improve blood pressure of those with known high blood pressure. In some instances, supplementation can be as effective as regular medications. 5. Garlic Improves Cholesterol Levels, Which May Lower The Risk of Heart Disease Garlic can lower Total and LDL cholesterol. Garlic supplementation seems to reduce total and LDL cholesterol, particularly in those who have high cholesterol. HDL cholesterol and triglycerides do not seem to be affected. 6. Garlic Contains Antioxidants That May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease andDementia

Oxidative damage from free radicals contributes to the ageing process. Garlic contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage and ageing. It may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. 7. Garlic May Help You Live Longer Given the beneficial effects on important risk factors like blood pressure, it makes sense that garlic could help you live longer. Garlic has known beneficial effects on common causes of chronic disease, so it makes perfect sense that it could help you live longer. 8. Athletic Performance Can be Improved With Garlic Supplementation Garlic was one of the earliest “performance enhancing” substances. It was traditionally used in ancient cultures to reduce fatigue and enhance the work capacity of labourers, most notably, it was administered to Olympic athletes in ancient Greece 9. Eating Garlic Can Help Detoxify Heavy Metals in the Body Garlic has been shown to significantly reduce lead toxicity and related symptoms in studies. 10. Garlic May Improve Bone Health One study in menopausal women found that a daily dose of dry garlic extract (equal to 2 grams of raw garlic) significantly decreased a marker of estrogen deficiency . This suggests that this garlic may have beneficial effects on bone health in

women. Foods like garlic and onions have also been shown to have beneficial effects on osteoarthritis. Garlic appears to have some benefits for bone health by increasing estrogen levels in females, but more human studies are needed. 11. Garlic Is Easy to Include In Your Diet and Tastes Absolutely Delicious The last one is not a health benefit, but still important. Garlic comes in several forms, from whole cloves and smooth pastes to powders and supplements like garlic extract and garlic oil. The minimum effective dose for therapeutic effects is one clove eaten with meals, two or three times a day. However, keep in mind that there are some downsides to garlic, such as bad breath. There are also some people who are allergic to it. The active compound allicin only forms when garlic is crushed or cleaved when it is raw. If you cook it before crushing it, then it won’t have the same health effects. Therefore, the best way to consume garlic is raw, or to crush and cut it and leave it out for a while before you add it to your recipes. 12. Anything Else? For thousands of years, garlic was believed to have medicinal properties. We now have the science to confirm it.

Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) Mazarrón

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRÓ N FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron started 2015 well with two away victories at CD Lumbreras and

LAGS have also supported, MAD (to purchase school books for disadvantaged children in Mazarron), Murcia Dance, Escuela de Futbol de Mazarron, Camposol Children (to help fund the development of a playground and sports facilities) and many others. On a bright sunny but chilly January morning, 35 players teed off from the 1st and 10th tees in what turned out to be extremely difficult conditions. This was clearly a day suited to players able to ‘pick’ the ball, cleanly, off bare lies. Sadly not all of our members possess these skills so point scoring remained difficult (in fact impossible for many). The day belonged to our winners who all turned in very good scores under such difficult conditions, so a big congratulations to : Tony Pickworth 31pts (Cat 1) : Tony Gleed 30 pts (Cat 2) : Alan Benton 30 pts (Cat 3) Our nearest the pin winners: Dave Pugh (aka Mr Sandman) Hole 2 , Martin Hill Hole 16.

Yeclano Deportivo and moved up to fifth place in the league with an excellent chance of achieving an end of season play-off spot. It is perhaps significant that some of their best performances this season have been away from home where most teams have excellent synthetic pitches which allow Mazarron to play a better passing game than on the bumpy surface at the Estadio Municipal in Mazarron. Tolo continued his excellent goal scoring record and his hat trick at Yeclano was his seventh in five games and his fifteenth of the season which made him the leading scorer in the division, three goals ahead of his nearest rivals. With recent acquisitions Monty and Manu supporting the consistent Liders in midfield and Mateo returning to boost the defence the team has a solid look about it with, hopefully, enough strength in depth to cover the numerous injuries and suspensions the squad have suffered in recent weeks. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Fundraisers extraordinaire LAGS (Los Amigos Golf Society) Mazarron kicked off their 2015 season at Paraleja Golf Resort on the 6th January, hoping to eclipse last year’s fantastic charitable efforts. Over the course of the last 7 years and thanks to the generosity of the society’s sponsors, LAGS have raised in excess of €18, 000, a level unparalleled in the region. The main recipient has been the Aspadem School in Mazarron; a school for children and young adults with disabilities and LAGS have been able to provide financial support enabling the school to purchase badly needed equipment and services to enhance the development of their pupils.

Car sale on the rise in Europe

In Spain, the government has repeatedly extended an incentive scheme, known as Plan PIVE, which offers price cuts on new low-emission vehicles.

Jaguar Land Rover to create 1,300 UK jobs to build SUV

thing that we really focus on is making sure that our future cars are both economic in terms of fuel economy, in terms of CO2. “This car’s going to be built at one of the world’s biggest aluminium body shops at Solihull that we’ve invested a huge amount of money in over the last couple of years. So gas guzzling? No”. ‘Thriving’ The luxury car firm, owned by India’s Tata Motors, said it had chosen the UK

Car sales in the European Union rose in 2014 for the first time in six years, according to the industry trade association ACEA. Sales were up 5.7% to 12,550,771, fuelled by government scrappage schemes and wholesale orders from companies. There was also a shift in sales to cheaper brands, with Dacia and Skoda reporting some of the biggest sales rises. Spain and the UK saw a sales jump in 2014, up 18% and 9.3% respectively. The ACEA said in a statement that in December sales rose 4.7% year-on-year, the 16th consecutive monthly rise. However, the industry remains cautious about growth this year, as many incentive schemes and tax breaks are being ended. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Nissan-Renault, said this week at the Detroit Motor Show that he expects European growth this year to be slow, at around 1%-2%. Peter Fuss, an automotive analyst at business services group E&Y, said in a research note on Friday that he expected 2015 sales to be about 3% higher. He said: “We remain cautious about the ability of new car sales to return to their pre-crisis levels by the end of this decade. “Furthermore, car sharing and other alternative trends of urban mobility are expected to gain relevance in the market amid shifting consumer preference.”

Jaguar Land Rover says it will create 1,300 new jobs to build Jaguar’s first sports utility vehicle (SUV) at its Solihull plant in the West Midlands. The firm has already invested £1.5bn in the Solihull plant to enable it to increase production, and it said its workforce there had almost doubled over the past three years to 9,450. Jaguar Land Rover currently employs 30,500 people in the UK. The car, called the Jaguar F-PACE, will be based on its C-X17 concept car. That was first launched at the Frankfurt motor show in 2013. The new model is due to go on sale in 2016. Jaguar Land Rover’s UK executive director, Mike Wright, told the BBC the new vehicle would not be a “gas guzzler”. “We spend about £3.5bn on our product investment each year and one

as the new model’s manufacturing base because it wanted its cars to be “crafted with that special British flair”. Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth said the announcement demonstrated its “commitment to the UK and the advancement of a high-

tech, high-skilled, manufacturing-led economy”. Business Secretary Vince Cable hailed the decision as a “ringing endorsement” of the UK’s car industry. Mr Cable said Jaguar Land Rover’s decision showed the UK’s car manufacturing sector was in good health. “The UK’s automotive industry is thriving with a new car rolling off the production line every 20 seconds, and increasing levels of investment that’s helping to secure local jobs,” he said. Growth The announcement came as Jaguar Land Rover said it had sold 462,678 vehicles globally last year - a rise of 9% year-onyear - and the fifth consecutive year that sales have grown. China saw the strongest growth, with sales up 28%, while in the UK sales rose 7%. Economic growth in China has slowed in recent years, and a clampdown on government spending on luxuries is eating into many companies’ sales growth in the country. However, Mr Wright told the BBC said there was little sign of slowing demand

in China for its products. “In the medium to long-term we see huge demand. The retail demand is still there in China,” he said.

Property, Financial and Legal Property Market To Take Off In 2015 Say Experts The property market in Spain is stabilising, say the experts. The forecast for next year is that property will sell more quickly, a greater number of mortgages will be granted and construction will move at a faster pace. Although all experts are in agreement about the state of the real-estate sector, they aren’t all in agreement about what house prices will do, whether they will go up or down. However, either way, the effect will be minimal compared to other years. It is true to say that the residential market has leveled out. This is after seven years of falling prices, where some areas have seen much sharper declines than others. This means two things. The first is that activity in the sector is improving, and the second is that from here it will grow. In 2014, we arrived at the point of inflexion, where sales were gradually rising, mortgages are being granted, investment is profitable once more and prices are timidly going up in a number of provinces. This is the stage that the real-estate sector has been hoping we would come to for quite some time. Construction

but this isn’t difficult when in 2013, the President of the Real-Estate Study process was practically halted. Fund, Julio Gil, believes that in 2015 Property prices construction will increase by 10%, Prices will begin to rise in 2015. although the amount of new builds will be a long way off from the levels that we were used to seeing in the boom years (300,000 new builds). Princess Cristina

Spain’s Princess Cristina is said to have come to an agreement over the sale of her luxury villa in Barcelona, although a judge will have still to sign off on the sale. Cristina, facing two charges of tax fraud, has come to a “verbal agreement” to sell the three-storey home in the exclusive Pedralbes area of the Catalan capital which she jointly owns with her husband Iñaki Urdangarin. Cristina and Urdangarin, bought the twobedroom home in 2004 for €5.8 million and spent around €3 million upgrading the property. Before the princess can finalise the deal, however, she’ll need the permission from the judge overseeing the criminal

Property, Financial and Legal case against her and Urdangarin. The 1,000-square-metre property — replete with a salt-water swimming pool — is currently embargoed as Urdangarin did not stump up the €6.1 million civil bond imposed by the judge as part

of a long-running investigation into his business dealings. It is currently under investigation that Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres embezzled €6 million in public funds meant for sports events. The money was allegedly placed in the nonprofit Noos Institute, which Urdangarin chaired from 2004 to 2006 and of which Cristina was a board member. Cristina sat said in court she had no knowledge of her husband’s business affairs, but she

now faces two charges of tax fraud, both carrying possible jail term of four years. The public prosecutor has called for Urdangarin to spend nearly 20 years behind bars. A mother of four with a master’s degree from New York University, Cristina was once considered untouchable as a member of the royal family. But the socalled Nóos affair fanned public anger against the monarchy and ruling class during the recent years of economic hardship in Spain. Urdangarin and Cristina have been excluded from royal activities since 2011.

wonderful pets for a child ,, and so cheap to keep. That’s about it for this month keep safe and warm Hello Folks Well the cold weather is certainly upon us and the donkeys are feeling the cold especially the older ones who are sometimes choosing to stay in their nice warm beds rather than venture out into the paddock and when they do they head straight for the sunny side. It has been a very sad time for us here at AAR with the sad loss of our beautiful girl Honey , a couple of weeks ago she didn’t want to get up which is always dangerous for a donkey , but after a little bit of gentle persuasion she was up on her feet and seemed fine, eating and enjoying her cuddles and treats as normal , but sadly last Friday she was found dead in the paddock. It has broken all our hearts as she was a very special lady with the biggest ears and longest legs you have ever seen on a donkey. She will be missed very much but we take comfort in the knowledge that she enjoyed the last months of her life here with us at AAR . On the positive side we have just said goodbye to Tetley who has gone to Germany to start his new life. So we wish him every happiness in his forever home , sad in some ways to say goodbye as he has been with us for 10 months , and of course we get attached .... Who wouldn’t .!!! Were desperately trying to find a home for Toc who again has been with us for a long time, he is a medium size dog with a bundle of energy and deserves the chance of a loving home. He is hard to home as he doesn’t stand out from the crowd , he’s just a plain dog....... Not fluffy !! No big curly tail !!! No cute eyebrows !!!! just the run of the mill dog ..... but a dog who just craves affection. Please even if is not you who can home him perhaps you can pass on his details to friends , neighbours etc and don’t forget he is ready to travel anywhere where there is a home for him. Also folks although we are primarily an Equine Charity we also help all sorts of animals and are in desperate need of homes for some of our Guinea Pigs..they would make a

GOMAD ARTICLE for February 2015 by Anne Bennett Christian Humanitarian Aid Charity in the Mazarrón & surrounding area helping those in need irrespective of race, creed or status. With the year ending festivities well and truly over but not forgotten we would like to thank all those revellers who supported us at our Christmas dinner dance at The Club House, Camposol on the 19th December. We were able to raise the sum

of 424.20 euros. We are now planning for the year ahead with an expected increase in our client list. We have recently gratefully received the sum of 3,300 Euros Ayuntamiento in Mazarrón, with whom we work closely as many of our clients are referred to us via the Social Services Department. The cheque was presented to our secretary Sandra by Francisco García, the Mayor of Mazarrón. We are, as usual, appealing for nappies, sanitary towels, shampoo and shower gel. We are also still collecting school supplies to be distributed in September. Please spare the children of Mazarrón a thought while you are all starting your spring cleaning! We also appeal for more volunteers to enable us to open our Puerto de Mazarrón shop more than just the three days. It is open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at the moment from 10.00 am - 2.00 pm. Please call 634 357 137 or email us on madmazarron@live.com if you can spare a few hours a week either in the shop or if you would like to help at one of our three aid days per month at Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón or Cañada de Gallego, come along and see directly how and who we help on a daily basis. We thank you for your continued support in 2015 for without your generous donations we could not continue to help those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. Many, many thanks.

here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?’ After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, ‘Wedding Cake.’ A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God she asked “Is my time up?” God said, “No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live.” Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair colour and brighten her teeth! Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 43 years? Why didn’t you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?” God replied: “I didn’t bloody recognize you.” Paddy says to Mick, I’m getting circumcised tomorrow, Mick says I had that done when I was a few days old. Paddy asks,” Does it Hurt?” Mick says...”well I couldn’t

walk for 18months.. A married couple were in a terrible accident in which the woman’s face was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn’t graft any skin from her body because she was too thin. So the husband offered to donate some of his own skin. However, the only skin on his body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from his buttocks. The husband and wife agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and requested that the doctor also honour their secret. After the surgery was completed, everyone was astounded at the woman’s new beauty. She looked more beautiful than she ever had before! All her friends and relatives just went on and on about her youthful beauty! One day, she was alone with her husband, and she was overcome with emotion at his sacrifice. She said, ”Dear, I just want to thank you for everything you did for me. There is no way I could ever repay you.” “My darling,” he replied, ”Think nothing of it. I get all the thanks I need every time I see your mother kiss you on the cheek.” All jokes supplied by martin@sallu.co.uk
