Dear Readers, Welcome to the January 2014 edition of The Journal! We hope that you’re Christmas and New Year was as good as ours! At the time of going to print we were having an absolutely fantastic time! Danny and I decided to have a “Who can make the best Xmas Ham” competition and thanks to Google and You Tube we have become experts in Ham making, from the ingredients to make the best brine, to the amount of time to brine the meat, to cooking method, we are having the grown up equivalent of a kids argument. It goes like this: Me “My recipe´s better than yours!” Danny “No its not, mines better than yours” Me “No its not, mines better than yours!” Actually it’s not even the grown up equivalent of a kid’s argument, it is a kid’s argument. But my recipe really is better than his. Easily. I will win the battle of the Xmas Ham´s competition! Speaking of competitions, you may have noticed our front cover. For those that didn’t, let me explain. We know that January is the worst month in which we all suffer from the winter blues. Christmas has left us all light in the pocket, we ate too much and drank too much over Xmas and to top it all off- its freezing cold outside! Movember and the New Royal
As many of you know from the report in our December 2013 magazine, a great group of guys from The New Royal in El Alamillo, Puerto de MazarrĂłn, took part in raising money for ‘Movember’ by growing moustaches during the whole month of November. A huge big thanks to all those who supported them – lots of money was raised for the charity. Final money raised was: Members & guests of Hacienda Del Alamo Golf Club donated 590 euros (from a Tuesday competition & Founders Dinner Dance). Alamo Golf Society donated 44 euros (from a golf day). New Royal customers and staff donated 105 euros.

Paramount Murcia Paramount Murcia’s rival is 1 of 9 developments in the UK set to benefit from £1 billion of infrastructure loans. Inside Housing revealed how Kent’s Paramount theme park, a proposed £2 billion development on the

The money, which was announced, builds upon a £225m pool announced in 2012. It will be available over 6 years to developers whose projects create at least 1,500 homes, with 9 already under consideration for funding. Cash will only be granted if schemes pass rigorous due diligence tests and represents good value for money to the tax payer, a Treasury source emphasised. The theme park is being developed by London Resort Company Holdings, with support from filmmaker Paramount.
Paramount funding
When the original contract to construct the Paramount Pictures theme park in Alhama de Murcia, Paramount Licensing in the USA would only contribute rights to the intellectual property – namely branding – for what was to become their first such park in Europe. However, it seems that Paramount have now changed their minds, and look likely to contribute around €10 Mln in investment. The total investment required by the developers of the park, Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos SA (Premursa), is now believed to stand at €450 Mln and the show of confidence in the venture by Paramount Licensing can only have a positive effect. As such Premursa has hired the services of a private consulting firm to raise the necessary funds to complete the project as planned. As it currently stands, the theme park itself will have 42 attractions (branded from films such as Mission Impossible); 17 shops and 2 themed hotels.
The so-called adjoining ‘lifestyle center’ will then comprise an entertainment complex of 780,000 sq mt; offices; further hotels; a casino; shops and an auditorium. Construction works to the value of some €72 Mln is already underway, which is on schedule for the facility to open to the public by April 2016, and which will see the number of jobs created during the building works involved at the park rise to 16’500. It might also be speculated that news of the demise of Madrid’s Eurovegas project may also bode well for further foreign investment in the project.

Government agrees solution with electricity suppliers to avoid rate hike Spain’s electricity suppliers and the government have reached an agreement on the 3.6-billion-euro shortfall created for the sector by the administration’s last-minute decision to withdraw budget support to cover the so-called tariff deficit, the difference between what it costs to produce electricity and what companies are allowed to charge for it. Mostly significantly, the accord should avoid an increase in electricity rates. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos had pledged that consumers would not have to foot the bill for the unexpected tariff deficit increase and that the administration would seek alternative means of resolving the issue. The solution took the form of the government agreeing to the securitization of the 3.6 billion euros, with the debt guaranteed by the state. Electricity companies can then sell this debt to investors to recover their costs. The tariff deficit has been a thorn in the side of the sector and a headache for the government, with the accumulated shortfall now close to 30 billion euros.

The agreement was reached in a meeting between Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro and representatives of the leading electricity producers, including the chairmen of Iberdrola, Gas Natural Fenosa and Endesa, respectively Ignacio Sánchez Galán, Salvador Gabarró and Borja Prado; and the chief executive officers of E.On España and EDP, Javier Alzóla and Miguel Stilwell de Andrade. The emergency meeting followed a telephone call by Montoro to Sánchez Galán. Soria argued that the about-turn was necessary as reducing the budget deficit was “above any other consideration” The deal was struck while Industry, Energy and Tourism Minister José Manuel Soria, the man directly responsible for the electricity sector, was meeting with the European Union commissioner for energy, Günther Oettinger, in Brussels. The deal avoids the electricity sector having to assume the 3.6 billion euros in debt on their balance sheets. According to sources in the sector, that would have resulted in an increase of between 0.5 percent and 1.0 percent in the electricity rates paid by end users over the 15 years the companies would have to amortize the debt. Electricity companies had complained that they were not informed beforehand of the amendments to the new draft law

overhauling the regulation of the sector introduced on Friday in the Senate, which included the withdrawal of the 3.6 billion euros in government funding to cover the deficit this year. Soria argued that the about-turn was necessary as reducing the budget deficit was “above any other consideration.” The agreement with the sector will involve removing the cap on the so-called Electricity System Deficit Securitization Fund (FADE), which the government set at 26 billion euros. The average interest rate paid on the 19 issues of debt made by the FADE was 4.48 percent. BUYING SOFA’S – What Are Your Needs Think before you hit the furniture shops. I would suggest one of the first things to do is sit in your living area and decide if you really need 3 + 2 Seater sofa set or would 2 x 2 seater sofas fit in better giving you more room and a better flow to your room. May be a 2 or a 3 seater sofa with one or two chairs would suit you better. If you have the energy have a little move around, it may give you a new vision to your needs for your room. Are you a social person with lots of friends visiting and what time of the year does this occur. If you are more of a summer socialite does this mean most of your entertaining happens on your terrace rather than indoors, or are you a chef and prefer dinner parties and your entertaining is done more around the table in the winter. What do you personally require from your sofas? Room for a kiss and cuddle or lay out with your head on you partners lap, well that’s enough of that said the actress to the Bishop. This could affect your ideas for your living area. Measure the sofas etc in the room so you are aware of the kind of space you have

available to fit in your new buy, nothing worse than buying sofas just too big for your room. It’s an easy mistake to make as sofas always seem to look smaller in the shops set in a bigger area than your living room. People come in wanting leather sofas and some people say they are cold to sit on in the winter and stick to them in the summer. This is just down to taste. Then we have the dog lovers, they want leather to wipe and their dog claws do not get stuck in materials, but will scratch leather. WELL great news for all these people, there is a range of microfiber material. It’s hard wearing, sponge down or vacuum. I have sofas in this material myself for the last year or so, my 2 dogs love it and cosy in the winter, no sticking in the summer. The colour ranges and designs are better than a year ago. Would you like recliners in your sofas, now these are great to get your feet off the cold floors in the winter and put your feet up in the summer when those ankles swell up, would not be without mine. One word of warning, if you want your husband to stay awake during the winter evenings - may be not such a good idea. Have another look at your room, what colour is your furniture, what colour would you like your new sofas in? Not sure then get out your T-Shirts or scarves
and try different colours against your furniture you will be surprised at what colour you may pick for a new image or a change. One last word. If you are thinking of changing the rest of your living area furniture in the near future take this into consideration as well. Your new sofas may not be quite the ticket for a few months but it will mean they will suit your new furniture when it arrives. Remember, they always say buy your most expensive item in the room first and build the rest of your furniture and accessories around it. A Tragedy Waiting To Happen? By an anonymous resident Ten years ago in the UK it was not uncommon to see cars being driven around without tax, MOT or insurance. Thankfully this is now a thing of the past as with the development of number plate recognition software, used by the police, these vehicles are now quickly stopped, confiscated and ultimately scrapped. As the days go by in Spain it appears that certain parts of the ex pat community have realised that currently the local police and Guardia Civil either do not have or can’t be bothered to use the equipment they have to prevent the same crimes happening here. The most obvious, in the Camposol/

Mazarron area, is white(sometimes other colours) van man who for years on end drives around in their UK registered, taxless, MOT/ITV less and un-insured vehicles ignoring the law. At the same time they expect everyone to believe that they are fully registered tradesmen paying their dues to the Spanish taxman. In reality all they do is undercut the legal tradesmen who do pay their way and eventually find it impossible to make ends meet. The term used is cowboy but I’m sure many could find a more appropriate description! Running a close second to white van man is the bar on Camposol which runs a fully liveried mini bus for its clients so that they don’t have to drink and drive. It is surprising that anyone would even step on to this vehicle knowing that because it was on Brit plates and has never legally been registered in Spain any insurance it does have is invalid and without having had any form of vehicle test is possibly un-roadworthy and dangerous. This is all without the bar or driver having a license to operate such a vehicle in Spain! Of course there is then the ex pat who just finds it easier to either purchase a cheap (because they are illegal)

UK registered car locally or even drive one from the UK and then over the years just run it in to the ground without registering it in Spain. Of course once the vehicle has been in Spain for 6 months or the MOT & Tax has expired the vehicle becomes illegal. This doesn’t seem to bother these owners. As long as they can get away with it, they will. The real question is to how these people are able to get away for it for so long? Of course they do get stopped by the police now and again, but it appears that as long as the police can see a live insurance document they are happy to let them go on their way. Hold on. How can a vehicle without tax or MOT documents get insurance? In the UK it is impossible but here in Spain there are at least two local well known Insurance Brokers who will supply a live policy without asking for these documents. It would appear they will turn a blind eye as long as they earn their commission! This is all well and good until these illegal vehicles are involved in an accident. Unfortunately in some cases this may well just be around the corner as the vast majority of these vehicles, have not had to undergo a MOT or ITV test, are not roadworthy. I am personally aware of two cases locally where it has cost the illegal owners thousands of Euros to settle for the damage caused to the other vehicle involved when they had accidents. One, because the Guardia Civil were involved, also ended up with a hefty

fine. Both had what they thought were full insurance documentation but still lost their vehicles. This is all well and good when it is just the vehicles that suffer damage. What happens when someone gets hurt in the accident? There is no way in this day and age that Insurance companies are going to pay out on policies that are used to cover illegal vehicles. As many of those who are legally insured will testify these companies look for any excuse not to pay out. Not only are the owners going to be involved in lengthy, expensive litigation but also invariably they are going to end up in a Spanish prison. At least, thankfully, the Spanish police and legal system treat those who choose to drive without legal insurance and cause damage to others very harshly. A tragedy waiting to happen for all concerned. I could go on to write about other ex pats who drive around in UK registered cars but believe this is OK as they drive back to the UK every year to renew their MOT and tax disc. It’s not. UK registered cars are allowed in Spain for a maximum of 6 months in each 12 month period. This figure is cumulative. Another cause for concern is the drink drivers. Every day you can find those who go to the bar and then feel it OK to just jump in their car/van and drive home. After all they only live a couple of hundred meters down the road! Another tragedy waiting to happen!!

On commencing this revue article I had only read up to Chapter 7. On reading

the first 6 chapters I thought this just a superficial rambling of typical American trash. With some interest! However! ; I now realise this is in fact quit a subtle genius observation of human interaction. This book, contrary to popular belief has nothing to do with SEX!! But it has everything to do with the subtleties’ of control!! The first six chapters hold the essence of the story. Everything else that follows just corroborates the complexity of it. I have not read any reviews of this, so called “revelation of a book”!! But! Mss. E L James has undoubtedly been either the victim or an observer of a controlling, dominating relationship. ! Anastasia Steele’s fate was manipulated from the time she “fell” into Christian Grey’s, rather plush and manicured office. If it had been her colleague Kate Kavanagh there would have been no story. ! All the “women” that surround him on a daily basis are beautiful and desirable but superficial or strong women. ! Ana is the unknown quantity. ! Different and, he hopes manipulative. ! He knows he can charm the “knickers off a nun” and so proceeds to manipulate, to his advantage, the situation. However, Ana, in her naivety throws a few subtle barriers in his path. I have now read the whole book and still maintain my initial observation, with a few more perceptions. Whilst the character of Ana grows, strengthens and develops; hey, she is portrayed as an intelligent, but open and naive woman who’s world has just been turned upside down. Although at her age you would have thought she would be a little more street wise!! But this is American literature and I don’t think we as British can appreciate just how insular and idealistic the majority of cosseted American people are or should I say were. It comes with

Christians character however although initially complex is in fact pretty simple. He knows what he wants and likes and pursues it to the utmost. He’s rich, good looking with a serious chip on his well toned and attired shoulders. I hope the next book, which I am yet to read Mss. E.L James will have courted in depth more of his character. I love how she ends it though, to be continued!!
The friend whom I borrowed this book from after reading it stated that “It’s OK if you were a 16 year old”!! Which I can see her point. ! If you want to read about SEX! buy a Jackie Collins novel.

Maggie and Rita provided the entertainment with a walk down memory lane – relating stories about how different Christmas was when we were young!
On Saturday 7th December a group of singers from Wellspring Victory Church gathered to sing Christmas carols at the Age Concern Christmas Fayre in Puerto de Mazarron. We had great fun and were well received by the shoppers and the organisers, who joined in with us to sing and bring a real Christmas feel to the event. Thank you Age Concern for the invitation, we really enjoyed it.

The Christmas fair was held at El Lagarto Verde in Puerto de Mazarron. It was packed with stalls selling all manner of goods including clothing and jewellery, plants, cards, artwork, pies, sweets, curries, cakes and much more. The bar was open all day for

Spanish and English food (bacon & eggs or paella!) and we were treated with a performance of carol-singing by the Wellspring Victory Church choir. Santa and his elf were there to help with the festivities and at the end of the day the raffle was drawn. Doug Wargent of Las Torres won the top prize of 50€ meat vouchers. We hope the other 10 lucky winners received their prizes in time for Christmas. Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus of Los Alcázares had their usual busy lead-up to Christmas, starting with their Christmas Show on Thursday, 5 December in the Los Alcázares Ayuntamiento’s Salon de Plenos They played to a packed house, which included the Mayor, Anastasio Bastida, and Maite Olmos Fuentes, Councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Industry. The show was compered by Spangles devotee, Amor Yagues and the Mayor commented that the chorus gets better and better every time he hears them. The ladies who attended the recent ‘Sing Harmony in a Day’ course had their moment of glory, joining the chorus to sing the song that they perfected at the course. Since then, 5 of the attendees have joined the chorus. On Sunday, 8 December, Spangles held a memorial service for Jane Chapman, a wonderful lady who had been with the chorus since 2006. “Jane was very dear to us and, although she passed away in the UK, we wanted to remember her here in Spain” said co-Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. Friends from Sucina, where Jane lived, attended and Spangles sang several songs before scattering rose petals on the
Christmas songs for the volunteers and customers at the HAH Christmas Fair at the Restaurante Bacchus, in Los Alcázares, followed by a few songs for Ali and her customers at The Arches Bar. Dos Mares Shopping Centre welcomed Spangles Christmas on Wednesday, 11 December, where they faced a battle with the sounds coming from the latest entertainment booth – a 5D cinema.

Afterwards, Spangles and guests moved on to party at the Restaurant Asia in San Javier, where more singing ensued. “The restaurant did us proud” commented Lyn Baines. “It’s not easy to serve hot food to 48 people and the staff did a marvellous job.” This annual get-together enables the management to announce the 2013 chorus awards. ‘Barbershopper of the

This year, in honour of Jane Chapman, Spangles created a new award, the ‘Jane Chapman Cup’, for best attendance, which will be awarded twice a year. “We thought that the trophy for best attendance was very appropriate” explained Lyn. “Jane went through a lot with her illness but she never complained, would never let it beat her, and turned up at rehearsal, no matter how ill she felt. It’s a fitting tribute to her commitment to the chorus and her love of singing.” The Jane Chapman Cup was won jointly by Lyn Baines, Carol Smith and Thelma Adams, who each missed only one rehearsal throughout 2013. He’s also got type 1 diabetes, where his body doesn’t produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. So he’s started a project which turns the sugar-rich urine of elderly diabetics into a high-end single malt whisky, suitable for export. The source material is acquired from elderly volunteers, including Gilpin’s own grandmother. The urine is purified in the same way as mains water is purified, with the sugar molecules removed and added to the mash stock to accelerate the whisky’s fermentation process. Traditionally, that sugar would be made from the starches in the mash. Once fermented into a clear alcohol spirit, whisky blendsare added to give colour, taste and viscosity, and the product is bottled with the name and age of the contributor. The original idea came from an (unverified) story he heard about a pharmaceutical company that supposedly set up a factory next to an old people’s home and would

swap cushions and soft toys for the residents’ urine. They’d then process the urine to remove the chemicals that had passed straight through the dilapidated endochrine systems of the patients, which could then be put straight back into new medicine. The whisky, as you might have

guessed, won’t be widely marketed conventionally. In fact, it’s more of an art piece, asking, Gilpin says, whether it’s “plausible to suggest that we start utilising our water purification systems in order to harvest the biological resources that our elderly already process in abundance”.

Overview of a Sore Throat
A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow. A sore throat can also feel dry and scratchy. A sore throat is a frequent symptom of the common cold or other acute respiratory tract infections. In some cases, a lab test will need to be done to determine if you or your child needs antibiotics. Causes of a Sore Throat Most sore throats are caused by viruses, like ones that cause a cold or the flu Some sore throats, like strep throat, are caused by bacteria; strep throat is caused by Group A streptococcus (strep-tuhKOK-us) Other causes include: Allergies Dry air Pollution (airborne chemicals or irritants) Smoking or exposure to second hand smoke Signs and Symptoms of a Viral Infection Accompanied by a Sore Throat Sneezing Cough Watery eyes

Antibiotics are needed When… Antibiotics are needed when a doctor diagnosed to you or your child a strep throat, which is caused by bacteria. Strep throat cannot be diagnosed by looking in the throat – a lab test must also be done. Antibiotics are prescribed for strep throat for the purpose of preventing rheumatic fever. If the test result shows strep throat, the infected patient should stay home from work, school, or day care until 24 hours after starting a treatment. A healthcare provider may prescribe other medicine or give you tips to help with other symptoms like fever and cough, but antibiotics are not needed to treat most sore throats. Antibiotics Will Not Help if… When a sore throat is caused by a virus or irritation from the air, antibiotic treatment will not help it get better. Most sore throats will improve on their own

within 1-2 weeks. It is important to take antibiotics only when they are needed. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can be harmful, and may lead to unwanted side effects like diarrhea, rashes, nausea, and stomach pain. More severe side effects may rarely occur, including life-threatening allergic reactions, kidney toxicity, and severe skin reactions. Each time you or your child takes an antibiotic, the bacteria that normally live in the body (on the skin, in the intestine, in the mouth and nose, etc.) are more likely to become resistant to antibiotics. Common antibiotics cannot kill infections caused by these resistant germs.
How to Feel Better Rest, over-the-counter medicines and other self-care methods may help you or your child feel better. For more information about symptomatic relief, talk to your pharmacist. Remember, always use over-the-counter products as directed. Many over-the-counter products are not recommended for children younger than certain ages. Technology Amazon drones Amazon has revealed plans to begin delivering customer orders within 30 minutes by unmanned, miniature drone-style aircraft.
Jeff Bezos, the ecommerce brand’s chief executive, announced that its Amazon Prime Air service could deliver packages weighing up to 2.3kg within half an hour of order. Amazon is reportedly hoping to launch to service within five years, subject to approval of the use of its ‘Octocopter’ drones by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The company posted a video on YouTube showing an order being made by a customer, the order being processed at an Amazon warehouse, and then being flown direct to the customer’s home by a drone. Amazon has also set up a microsite with details of the project.
Bioengineers develop form-shifting gel to aid bone regeneration Bioengineers from Rice University have developed a
temperature-sensitive gel that starts as a liquid, solidifies into a gel in the body and then liquefies again for removal. The material has been designed for use as a scaffold material for bone regeneration in the head and face. The gel -- poly(Nisopropylacrylamide), orPNiPAAm -- has been designed to be injected into the body to help direct the formation of new bone that has been lost or damaged through injury or disease. At room temperature it is liquid, but it turns into a more solid gel at body temperature. It could act as an alternative to prefabricated implantable scaffolds. The material has been developed in the bioengineering lab of Antonios Mikos. Mikos said: “This new platform technology leverages
injectable, thermally responsive, chemically crosslinkable and bioresorbable hydrogels for regenerative medicine applications. It enables the formation of scaffolds locally and the delivery of growth factors and stem cells into defects of
complex anatomical shapes with minimal surgical intervention.” PNiPAAm’s cross-linking technology lets the researchers eliminate shrinkage of the gel, which improves its stability so that it can deliver growth factors and stem cell populations to the area being treated. Once enough bone tissue has regenerated to fill the area, the scaffold can be turned back into a liquid state and reabsorbed by the body. Mikos believes that the ability to encapsulate stem cell populations with these sorts of temperaturesensitive injectable gel scaffolds will have “enormous implications for the development of novel therapeutics for craniofacial bone regeneration”. A paper on the research has been authored by Tiffany Vo, a fourthyear doctoral graduate student in Mikos’ lab, and colleagues.

of an ongoing research project on autonomous cars and other
assisted driving technologies that can help lead to safer roads and less traffic congestion. The research car is part of Ford’s Blueprint for Mobility initiative, the company’s plan to help integrate the automotive and telecommunications industries by putting more intelligent vehicles and transportation systems on roadways. The company is partnering with State Farm and researchers at the University of Michigan to further develop the car. The Ford Fusion vehicle uses much of the same technology found in models of the car currently for sale, but it includes four cylindrical LiDAR detectors on the vehicle’s roof. Those sensors constantly collect and process data in the nearby environment -- scanning 2.5 million times per second to create a real-time 3D map of their surroundings. That detailed picture of the world around the vehicle is designed to guide the car to make smarter driving decisions. It could one day help to increase fuel efficiency and cut down on human driving errors, collisions and congested roadways, according to Ford. Researchers are optimistic about potential benefits of autonomous driving technology to consumers, said Panagiotis Tsiotras, professor and director of the Dynamics and Control Systems Laboratory at theGeorgia Institute of Technology. “To begin with, autonomous vehicles do not violate traffic signs or speed limits. People with long commutes can instead spend the time reading or catch up with friends, family or work,” “Elderly people in the U.S. and elsewhere are often prohibited from operating a motor vehicle after a certain age, thus reducing their mobility and quality of life. A fully autonomous vehicle will provide unprecedented flexibility in the lives of these people,” added Tsiotras.

Before any of those features become mainstream, though, there’s one far more important concern, said Edwin Olson, professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan and one of the members of the team developing the sensor-based technologies for Ford’s research vehicle. “Our No. 1 priority, with all other goals a distant second, is safety,” he told TechNewsWorld. “We want to reduce vehicle-related casualties. With almost 40,000 fatalities in the U.S. and millions worldwide -- and that’s not counting injuries and property damage -- there’s a huge opportunity for societal good by improving the safety of vehicles.” Long-Term Research People who remain skeptical about the future of autonomous driving often voice concerns that a driverless car -- or at least, one that does the majority of the work for drivers -- seems dangerous or out of control, but Ford and other companies working on the technology are out to disprove those arguments, said Olson. “I think we all have had close calls due to distraction or inattention -- on either our part or on another driver’s part,” he pointed out. “In the relatively short term, we can bring technology to improve safety of our roadways. Our research vehicle can see 360 degrees in every direction, and it doesn’t get tired or distracted. We think it will make you a better driver.” Doubt isn’t the only hurdle to clear before autonomous vehicles can go mainstream. There are legal issues
to resolve, and costs must be slashed. However, smarter cars are the future of the industry, even if this innovation doesn’t blossom overnight, said Olson. “Vehicles have been getting more intelligent for decades,” he pointed out. “Even antilock brakes represent a case where the vehicle makes decisions to help you drive better. Automated cars are a big step in the direction of enlisting a computer’s help in improving driver safety and performance, but it’s in line with decades of development.

Unless it’s an iPad/iPhone/ or anything involving a plug and a touch screen. Christmas seemed to start very early in the UK in 2013 and even I had my tree up and adorned by December 5th but you can blame another set of three maybe -not-so-wise men for that,-Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior were in town as the Rat Pack

We did last year, for one of the oldest Auto-Plays in Spain, where Balthazar, whatsisname and the other one, performed in wonderful costume, astride horses (camels, it seems, are not recession-proof) and the whole place was abuzz with a wonderful feeling and a dressed up balcony where an actor spoke down to the bearers of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh on the street below. Magic stuff. Not quite the Big Parade of Madrid the night before (if you have Spanish telly, and why wouldn’t you?) tune in for a major treat. Oh, and we have a New Year. 2014 unfolds before us, leading who knows where, or in what fashion. More awards for The Journal? Quite likely. Preparations for Paramount? Cabin bags for Corvera? Street lights for the Dark Continent of Camposol? Of course I jest on these last three. We love a good laugh, though, don’t we? Hopefully I’ll make the silver screen this year, (unless I hit the Cutting Room floor of course) in a film coming out soon titled ‘Jack to a King’ –a play on the nickname of Swansea folk (Jacks) and a docu-film about their meteoric rise to the English Football Premier League. using the word ‘authentic’ when it comes to Spain. There will be half a million Brits living in Spain right now, penning out their ‘new life in Spain’ book, thinking they are special. There will be legal hoops to jump through, a charming neighbour named Juan, lazy builders, translation mishaps… blah, blah, blah. I gave up reading such books a while
back, after reading a memoir so bad I tossed it out a window. But when Paul Read told the story of searching for authentic tortilla in Andalucia, there was finally a ‘living in Spain’ book with reading. Many pronounce to have found ‘the real Spain’ (as if there can be a one-size-fits-all Spain). If they do find such a beast, they pen the tale all wrong. Not so with Read – Inside the Tortilla reads like you’re in the moment, hearing the words from the author himself, who spares the clichés. Read’s words rang true about the Mediterranean coast being a mess, and the food being disappointing. Tourism is the ultimate double edged sword – it’s a huge industry, making money and providing employment, but it also poisons all it touches. Read goes where many an expat doesn’t bother – away from the packaged coast of Spain. Enter the town nicknamed ‘La Clave’ in the hills outside Granada, and a more natural way of life. We find Read finding his way, making a new life far removed from the path many expats take. We meet Andrés, who gives rise to the nickname ‘Gazpacho Monk’ as the author is known.

Healthy recipes to kick start your New Year

Superhealthy salmon burgers Ingredients 4 boneless, skinless salmon fillets, about 550g/1lb 4oz in total, cut into chunks 2 tbsp Thai red curry paste

100g each strong white and strong wholewheat flour
1 bunch coriander, half chopped, half leaves picked
1 tsp or 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast

1 tsp vegetable oil lemon wedges, to serve
125ml warm water
For the salad 2 carrots
For the topping 200g can chopped tomatoes, juice drained

handful cherry tomatoes, halved
2 shallots, sliced
1 tsp golden caster sugar
1 large courgette, thinly sliced using a peeler
1 tbsp olive oil
Method
25g mozzarella, torn into pieces
2 tsp dried crushed oregano or 1 tsp fresh leaves
Tip the salmon into a food processor with the paste, ginger, soy and chopped coriander. Pulse until roughly minced. Tip out the mix and shape into 4 burgers. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, then fry the burgers for 4-5 mins on each side, turning until crisp and cooked through.

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Tip the potatoes and shallots into a large, non-stick roasting tin, drizzle with the oil, sprinkle over the oregano, then mix everything together well. Bake for 15 mins, add the mushrooms, then cook for a further 10 mins until the potatoes are browned and tender.

    The final few months of the year and early January often find us in a frantic state of shopping, decorating, travelling, and other highenergy activity.Yet instead of having fun, we often end up feeling ill, anxious, or depressed. The reason, according to Taoist philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is that the action-packed schedules we keep at this time of year fall out of sync with the earth’s natural cycles.  We naturally have less energy to burn during the winter, so when we engage in behaviours more appropriate for summer—staying up late and dashing around town—it’s no wonder that the forced cheer of the holiday season can wear a bit thin.  Taoist philosophy sees universal balance in terms of yin and yang, complementary forces that govern the universe.Yin characteristics are cool, wet, slow, feminine, and quiet, whereas yang is the opposite: warm, dry, fast, masculine, extroverted. Winter, the yin season, is a time for storing and conserving energy in the way a bear retains fat by hibernating, or a farmer stores food for the cold months ahead. In agrarian cultures, people spend the shortest, darkest days indoors by the fire, eating warm, slowcooked, nourishing food and sharing stories with their families. The difference between winter’s
restful, introspective, yin nature and the frantic way many of us spend the run up to our Christmas, New Year and King’s holidays can contribute to seasonal affective disorder, depression, exhaustion, and other manifestations of what is known in TCM as shen (or spiritual) disharmony.   There is a period called Winter solstice, just three or four days before Christmas, it is the darkest, most yin day of the year, Instead of turning inward, we’re celebrating with excess and yang activity. This artificiality creates stress, and many people dread the season as a result.  To stay balanced during the rest of winter, you need to conserve your yang energy. Restorative yoga, tai chi, qigong, and walking are best suited for yin season, as they safeguard your energy reserves. Don’t use up what little winter energy you have with over activity and added stress.  Eating cooked, spicy yang foods provides another good way to replenish energy. Prepare yang-strengthening soups, slow-simmered stews, beans, roasted root vegetables, and warm drinks. Add yang spices such as garlic, ginger, black pepper, cloves, and basil to increase the warming effect. Minimize your intake of yin foods such as raw vegetables, salad greens, and cold drinks. If you find quiet, more modest ways to pass your winter days, you’ll stay in tune with the winter season and feel less need to release tension by overeating or rampant spending. LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron’s topsy turvy season continued deep into December. Following the home win against CF Molina three of the next five games were won and two lost prior to the last game of 2013 away to Moratalla. The performances were not helped by players missing through suspension and holidays, and discipline on the field has to be improved if Mazarron are to launch a serious challenge for promotion in the New Year. Too many players have been cautioned for dissent and players were missing through suspension in six of the 12 games played up to mid December. Despite this Mazarron, at the time of writing, were only four points away from an automatic promotion position. Both the Juveniles (17/18 years) and the Cadetes (15/16years) continued their successful starts to the season and at the time of writing were top of their respective divisions. Mazarron field teams in 5 junior age groups ranging for 9 years to 18 years and teams in all the age groups are performing well. As long as players can be retained and are not lured to bigger clubs like Cartagena, Elche and Real Murcia, the future certainly looks bright for football in Mazarro. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to each away game, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach prices are 7€ for members and 9€ for non-members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on our website www. losamigosdemazarron.es and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. It was a great night out and Michelle and Pitu entered into the festive spirit with traditional Christmas songs as well as a wide range of popular music from their repertoire which kept the audience dancing late into the night. Everyone was sad to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Legal Secretary Alan Hogg on the Tuesday before the Christmas Party which he had helped to
organise. Alan had only lived in Spain with wife Shiona for 18 months but, in that short time, had made a great impact on Camposol life serving on several committees. He was a larger than life character with a wicked sense of humour and he will be greatly missed. Michelle, with whom Alan served on the Fiesta Committee, paid tribute to him on the evening of the Christmas Social and led everyone in a round of applause.
Seguros Churra. Los Amigos de Mazarron handed out the traditional cider and mince pies to all supporters as they arrived for the Gesa Seguros Churra game on 8th December. This has become part of the Mazarron calendar and is much appreciated by our fellow Spanish supporters as well as the ex-pats. Tickets for the 5th Annual Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Gala Evening and Dinner are selling very fast. It will be held at the Hotel la Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarron on Wednesday 12th March 2014 with guest speaker Joe Royle. On the 5th December we held our Christmas Fun day and presentation dinner at the Campo Municipal de Golf Alfonso Legaz, in Torre Pacheco. There´s a good reason for having insurance when you play this par 3 with crossing fairways and adjacent greens. All members, however escaped unhurt and fit to take on the splendid 4 course meal laid on by the staff. Some members did have to have a little drop of Christmas cheer, to get over their score, or drown their sorrows for not receiving a trophy, or raffle prize. The meal over, we got down to the serious business of the presentation of the trophies, made by the club captain, Jim Booth. The Overall Points Champion was Nigel

Seat President Juergen Stackmann said the SUV would be an important strategic building block in the automaker’s product offensive in Europe. Seat is working on an SUV that would “fit the brand and develop another European sub-segment” for the carmaker, Stackmann told Automotive News Europe’s sister publication Automobilwoche. He said no decision had been made yet on the SUV’s production. Seat’s sales are on the rise since it introduced the new Leon compact car range, which currently includes three- and five-door hatchbacks as well as a station wagon. The Leon, Toledo compact and Mii minicar helped to boost Seat’s sales by 10 percent to 242,487 in the first 10 months in EU and EFTA countries in a market that was down by 3 percent during the period, according to industry association ACEA. According to media reports, a Seat SUV could incorporate styling elements seen in the Seat IBX concept that was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva auto show. If built, Seat’s compact SUV would use VW

Spanish car sales rise 15% in November on subsidies Spanish new-car sales jumped 15 percent to 55,450 in November, helped by scrappage subsidies offered by the government. This represented the third straight month of rising sales which have been boosted by the subsidies, car manufacturers’ association Anfac said on Monday. Deliveries rose 34 percent year-on-year in October. Under the terms of the 1,000 euro subsidy, which must be matched by a discount from the dealership, buyers must trade in a seven- to 10-year-old vehicle in exchange for a more fuel-efficient model priced at 25,000 euros or less. Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said previously that three earlier scrappage plans, all of which exhausted their funding prior to October, contributed to the purchase of 300,000 vehicles. In the first 11 months, car sales rose 2 percent to 662,188, Anfac said. The association said it expected sales to rise to about 720,000 for the whole year.
Spanish car plants look beyond low labor costs to prolong boom While much of the European car industry is struggling, Spanish assembly plants are raising production, winning new models and creating jobs despite years of recession.
At the moment, at least, the outlook is bright. Gray-shirted assembly line workers at Spain’s biggest car factory live in a world apart from outside the factory gates, where one in four is unemployed and countless others fear for their jobs. At the Martorell plant near Barcelona, headquarters of the Volkswagen-owned Spanish unit Seat, where production rose 7 percent last year, workers assemble five different models on a moving carousel. “Nobody talks about layoffs here, nor has anyone been fired,” said assembly line worker Pedro Pastor, a 30-year-old father who has worked for Seat for 10 years. “In contrast, a lot of my friends are unemployed and can’t find work.” Just as Mexico has a thriving motor industry making vehicles for much of the Americas, its Spanish counterpart is prospering despite the depressed domestic economy by keeping labor costs down and targeting stronger European markets. A six-year sales slump and aggressive discounting across much of continental Europe have badly hurt mass-market manufacturers. PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, one of the worst affected which lost 5 billion euros ($6.73 billion) last year, said on Nov. 21 it may close an assembly line at its Mulhouse plant in eastern France unless production picks up. Martorell, which makes the Seat Ibiza and Leon models, illustrates the robust state of Spain’s car industry. Spain’s biggest export market is France, which is showing signs of a sales recovery, followed by Germany which avoided the worst of the euro zone crisis and the relatively buoyant UK. The industry created over 2,400 Spanish jobs in the first six months of this year as foreign firms including Ford Motor Co. and even PSA opened production lines, investing 3.5 billion euros in just over a year. With Spanish unemployment at 26 percent, unions keen to protect jobs have accepted flexible work practices and salary freezes, which together with close links to a world-class domestic car parts industry have helped to attract the orders. Spain has no domestically owned carmakers -- Volkswagen bought Seat from the state in 1986 -- but the overall industry accounts for 10 percent of economic output and employs 9 percent of the work force. members working more hours when a big order comes through, and then taking time off owed to them when assembly lines lie idle. “Spanish unions are signing the best collective bargaining contracts in Europe with multinational companies,” Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told Reuters this week. Unions have adopted measures that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, such as twin-track salary scales where new workers get paid less for doing the same job as existing employees. Many of these measures, like deciding collective wage agreements at each company rather than across the entire industry, have become enshrined in law by the centerright government’s labor reform last year. Salary freezes have meant wages in the sector have lagged inflation by around two percentage points over the past two years, unions estimate. Average assembly line workers’ wages are between 1,900 to 2,000 euros per month, unions say, still above the average Spanish salary. Spain is expected to continue to attract car orders over the next two years, with factories predicted to work at 85 percent of capacity in 2015, up from 68 percent in 2012, according to consultant IHS Automotive. By contrast, Italian factories are forecast to operate at only 59 percent in 2015, compared with 48 percent last year. A factory needs to work at 75 percent to 80 percent of capacity to break
even, experts estimate. But labor costs make up barely 10 percent of a vehicle’s cost and the industry wants a better freight network to allow production to be shipped more efficiently to its major markets. “Restraining wages is not enough, it’s essential, but it’s not enough,” said Mario Armero, executive vice president of Spanish carmakers’ association ANFAC. “Improvements must be made in transport links.” Compared with labor costs, transport has an equal or greater weighting in Spain, says business consultancy PwC. This is an important concern for a country which exports nearly 90 percent of its car production. Successive Spanish governments have invested heavily in passenger transport to benefit the tourist industry, like the high-speed AVE highspeed train network, rather than freight. “Infrastructure in Spain has been geared more towards the transport of people rather than goods,” said the head of Citroen in Spain, Alfredo Vila, whose factory in the northwestern city of Vigo was recently assigned the production of the new C4 Picasso. The government has promised to invest 112 million euros in integrating seaports with road and rail links. But big spending projects are likely to be delayed while the state makes sweeping cost cuts to meet tough budget
deficit targets. Government spending on public works fell 11 percent in the first nine months of this year, official data show, on 2012 investment figures that had already hit an all-time low. Not just a workshop European competitors such as the Czech Republic, where labor costs are half those of Spain’s, are closer to the main markets including Germany. Martorell is waiting for Volkswagen to decide whether to build a Seat SUV at the plant or at its Czech subsidiary Skoda. Bringing research and development to Spain will make the industry less dependent on production lines, officials say. Hopes are pinned on a growing number of Spaniards at the top level of carmakers, including Volkswagen board member and head of procurement Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz and Jose Vicente de los Mozos, who is executive vice-president of manufacturing and supply chain at Renault. “Spain shouldn’t just be a workshop,” said PwC car industry expert Manuel Diaz. “We should have more research and development, because that is what makes production sustainable and creates an industry around fabrication.”

Property, Financial and Legal EU opens finance probe into Spanish aid to soccer The European Union announced a probe targeting Real Madrid, Barcelona and five other top Spanish soccer clubs that it says may have received possible illegal state aid. The EU also said it might widen its investigation to include soccer teams’ outstanding tax debts to the Spanish government, which total in the hundreds of millions. EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said clubs should use sound financial management rather than live “at the expense of the taxpayer.” Almunia’s office is responsible for making sure that businesses across the 28-country EU face a level playing field — including multi-billion, immensely popular soccer industry. The probe is intended to see if teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid have been unfairly relying on state aid to face other clubs in Spain’s top flight La Liga league and
European teams like Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. Beyond the top two teams, the probe is also investigating Valencia, Hercules, Elche, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna. The Spanish government, which knew the probe was coming, has already said there was nothing illegal about the aid that the clubs received. Debt-ridden Spain has been struggling financially for years since it faced a real estate implosion several years ago. Many Spanish league soccer clubs — like many other types of Spanish businesses — already face severe financial difficulties. A decision to force them to return state aid money could make their problems even more acute. In the case of Valencia and its neighboring teams Elche and Hercules, state guarantees for over 100 million euros (nearly $140 million) in loans over the past four years have been seen as essential for the clubs’ survival.

Hope you all have had a Merry Christmas and that this year brings all you desire! We had a great start to our celebrations with a visit to the carpark on B sector on the Monday before Christmas taking Twiglet and Charley Boy with us. They were very well received by all that attended and the mince pies and sherry went down a treat also. We were surprised by the number of Spanish and other Nationalities that came to say ‘Hello’ also. But what really amazed us is that these people donated over 300€ into our collecting tins. The animals and the charity thank everyone that donated, and for Kevin and myself it was such a pleasure to bring these two to meet ‘Their Public’. We have over the past two years or so rescued five pot bellied pigs and these have now found a home altogether in Catral. They have a paddock area about the same size as we have here but these now have the paddock to themselves. This is a great result for us, and on our visit there two weeks later they have really settled in.
2 very special little dogs who would love to find there forever home. Firstly we have Honey bun. She is a 12 month old Fox Terrier mix, she is so loving, she loves to play and especially to cuddle. she is very good with other dogs and loves Honey bun human company. Secondly we have Laika, she also around 13 months was abandoned at our kennels and had been used to living in a Laika
home environment, she is good with other animals and also with Children. She craves love and affections. she also is good with other dogs and loves to play with her kennel mates. I have included a picture of both Honey bun and Laika playing with their kennel companions. as Dogs at play you will see we have a number of dogs large and small looking for their forever home. Last week we found a shopping bag full of puppies left at the door

It was not all good news however, two small puppies were found in a bin near to Mazarron. They were very cold, and so young that they had their eyes still closed these puppies would most certainly have died, as usual it was a Saturday evening when the vets were closed and no possibility of getting food for them. A phone call to our friend Amanda in Roldan and she ´volunteered´ to look after them, on the plus side one of the pups has been reserved and will go to her new home when she is has been weaned .
