JOURNAL
THE Dear Readers,
Another month has come and gone in the blink of an eye and here we are in the middle of summer already! Last month was a busy and arduous one for us here at Journal Towers. First of all we had to stop work to endure the hardship of enjoying the Queens Diamond Jubilee while soaking up the Spanish sunshine. It seems that those poor souls in attendance at the Flotilla parade were also soaking up something, mainly rainwater by the looks of it. The Queen could not have asked for more quintessentially British weather to mark the occasion. Barely a week later and we had to dust off our party frocks once again for the 3rd annual Camposol Fiesta where a great time was had by all. You will find a more detailed report of the proceedings on the centre pages written by Rod Sawyer. Poor Rod had to battle a serious bout of man flu for most of the Fiesta weekend, leaving us no choice but to consume his share of beer and wine. It was a hard job, but true friendship knows no boundaries. We are proud to report that he is now back in fine health, and can be found causing trouble in a Bar or Restaurant near you. This month I would like to welcome our new Columnist Dawn Llewellyn Price. Some of you may already know Dawn, she writes a weekly column for the South Wales Evening Post and is an avid blogger, artist and photographer. She spends her time split between her homes in Camposol and Wales and has a tongue in cheek attitude to life, so will fit in perfectly here at The Journal! We are glad to have you on board Dawn. Also this month look out for the article on what’s new at Scotties Bar in El Pareton. We would like to welcome back La Mariposa to the magazine. They have some fantastic upcoming music nights and unbelievable special offers on accommodation and food, quad biking, Kayaking, menu del dia and lots more. Be sure to see their advert on page 19. Another article to look out for is all about Coato in Totana. Coato is the huge factory on the left hand side as you enter into Totana on the main road. For many years this farmers Co-operative has had a Bio-Shop open to the public selling all sort of fabulous locally produced items. The article explains a bit more about Coato and why they would like to welcome you to come and visit their factory shop. Lastly I would like to extend a massive thank you to you our readers and also to our advertisers for making us the fastest growing magazine in the Murcia region. When you call or visit any of our advertisers, please remember to tell them that you heard about them here! Thanks for reading, Robert Rutherford

Bi Monthly Meeting with Councilors.
The meeting scheduled for the 23rd May was delayed until the 30th. In the event some fifty turned up for the meeting. The meeting did start some twenty minutes late, with Tatiana translating, Pepe Gomez in attendance along with David Fernandez who chaired. David spent the first ten minutes outlining progress, street lights on A, along with the assimilation of Sector A. This left an enormous agenda which he went through; resoling planning issues, roads, the rambla on D, turistico polygonos, he outlined how the most recent water cut on B C and D was possibly the consequence of deliberate sabotage, the electricity supply to pumps having been interfered with. This would not be the first time such an action has taken place. Two years ago water was deliberately turned off on most of Camposol. The saga has continued with poor supplies for a fortnight. David did indicate that discussions were ongoing with Aqualia and hopefully would resolve issues including payment. The bulk of the meeting was spent on questions. Some used the occasion to make political speeches with really no question, including one gentleman who left shortly after causing chaos! Perhaps the worst question was from the front where someone raised the question of the collection of IBI and wouldn’t let
it go. David admitted that a minority of Camposol owners paid IBI. The questioner seemed unable to grasp the fact that the Town hall may collect IBI, but is not in charge of it! Central government sets the rate of charge, the Town hall is informed by Murcia as to who pays it! It can take years for a resale to go through the books. There is nothing the Town Hall can do to hasten the process. Other inhibiters are lack of escritura, lack of proper planning permits, all of which contribute to the delays. Having significant numbers of holiday homes in the port and on Camposol does not help. Tracking and charging is a nightmare. It is calculated that up to a third of the homes in Mazarron have not paid IBI! It does not help to compare with the UK where the rating system is very different. Noise during this debate and others made it very difficult to follow Tatiana, which was in no way her fault. At one point a question was raised which David had spent time on in his preamble; the questioner had arrived late but still persisted even when told the question had been answered. Spanish classes at the Cultural Centre were requested and David is looking into this. Perhaps the most difficult case raised was that of electricity on D25. This is the area built by a different contractor, who it is believed has gone bankrupt. The owners have come to an agreement with Iberdrola over a transformer, but the Town Hall has so far

refused permission for its erection. They key would seem to be the problem with planning permission. Within two months the polygono will go onto rationed electricity. The owners are of course the innocents in the middle of the muddle. Other issues raised included rubbish removal problems, the number of illegal British registered cars, the summer train (scheduled to start early June and now running its service) These are open meetings and all are entitled to attend and speak. A lot of ground was covered and David was left in doubt as to the frustration people felt. He did say that progress would be real over the next few months, with paperwork and the new plan general the priority. Rod Sawyer
Camposol Residents Association
Once more the shortcomings and complications of Camposol’s water supply have been very much in focus. As well as the familiar sight of streams of water running down our streets as a result of burst pipes, on May the 27th Residents of Sectors B, C and D were subjected to the inconvenience of having no water for what was for some a period of 36 hours. Just over a week from the supply being restored, residents found themselves in the very same position of once again having no access to that

most basic and essential commodity for a period this time approaching 28 hours. Once again there is confusion and contradiction surrounding circumstances on the urbanization. It was claimed by council sources that the original problem resulted from an act of vandalism however in what seems as a response to many expressions of dissatisfaction displayed on the CRA website, Tatiana from the Camposol’s council office has stated that she had been told by Aqualia that this latest instance was caused pump problems. From the little knowledge we have gained in the past, and what ever the particular causes of the breakdown in supplies on these latest occasions, it seems likely that both mechanical failure and malicious damage have been at fault at one time or another. What is indisputable is that some urgent action is needed to put an end to the prospect of further serious disruption to our water supply. Especially considering the amount of properties, the suspect equipment and the system employed for the supply of water found Camposol, if any further interruptions are to be kept to a minimum there is a real need for an effective warning or monitoring system to be
adopted. This could be done by way of modern Telemetry equipment or even old fashion manual inspections on a regular basis would be better then nothing. Attention to the security aspect should also be addressed with the implementation of suitable fencing or walls and alarms to protect the pump installation. Both this and the previous administrations had made us aware of there intention to correct the abnormality of B,C and D residents paying the Masa arm of Justo Y Minoli for a supply that was effectively supplied and invoiced by water company Aqualia. Also many properties, through no fault of their own, have never had a meter installed and therefore never had a water bill. It had been stated that after the dismissal of Justo Y Minoli the administrations plan would involve putting the whole supply out to tender, however after since coming to the conclusion that this would not be legally or practically possible, the council have rescinded and it seems that the old contract giving Aqualia another six years will apply. The CRA had initially hoped that the council would take up a suggestion that a requirement for the previously mentioned monitoring and security measures could
be incorporated in any new tender conditions. Never the less even though being in the position of not now having the same degree of leverage over any prospective future supplier, we intend to lobby the council to put what ever pressure they can on Aqualia. With this in mind CRA Chairman Bob Owen has contacted Tatiana requesting an urgent meeting with our councillor José Gómez (Pepe) be arranged. While on the subject of H20 we would take this opportunity point out that the CRA duty phone service is primarily for purpose of reporting Camposol water leaks, sewage leaks and other such emergencies associated with the urbanizations infrastructure. Before using the facility we hope that due consideration will be given to the fact that it is a CRA sponsored service manned in their own personal time by volunteer members of the CRA Committee. Therefore we would request that if making use of this facility, both the nature and timing of any calls as well as the manner in which they are made are appropriate.

Scotties Bar El Pareton For the last 5 years Aileen ( aka Scottie) and her husband Andy have worked hard as the proprietors of Scotties bar to make it the success that it is today. Integrating themselves into Spanish village life and running a Spanish Village bar that also appealed to the British has not always been an easy task. “It was a steep learning curve” says Scottie/Aileen “Understanding the ways of the Spanish and what the locals like to eat and drink in a bar, while catering for the British at the same time was at times a challenge. The main thing for us was to employ experienced Spanish staff who are local to the area. Its with their help and guidance that we are able to cater for both the Spanish and the British successfully” Scotties now serves a full Tapas menu, with all the usual things that one would expect to find in a typical Spanish bar. The beauty of Scotties is that there is something to suit everyone. Bocadillios, Tapas (including some of the best Serrano ham around) or for those that fancy something more quintessentially British there is the famous Scotties daily menu, serving everything from toasted

sandwiches, Full English Breakfasts, Burgers, Pie and mash and Menu del Dia. Scotties are well known in the area for their Sunday lunches starting from only 5€. Saturday night is Steak Night at Scotties serving a choice of starters, prime rump steak cooked to perfection with choice of sauces, all the trimmings and a choice of desserts. There is even a bottle of wine thrown in per couple! This event generally sells out each week so booking is advised. Not content with all of the above the couple are working hard to make things even bigger and better and are in the process of installing a huge gazebo in the courtyard transforming the space into a fantastic shaded area ideal for catering for large parties. They will be hosting BBQs, themed nights and of course introducing the world to Lola´s famous Giant paellas. Watch this space for upcoming events! Scotties is the first bar on the left after Upper Supermarket and is open from 7am until late Tuesday till Sunday, and on a Monday from 10 until late. Prison time for corrupt Mayor The Tribunal Superior Courts of Justice in Murcia have handed down a sentence of two years imprisonment for the exMayor of Totana, Juan Morales Canovas. Whilst the corrupt ex-Mayor of Totana’s lawyer managed to get the sentence reduced from 29 years to just 2 years, it still cannot be considered a total victory as the court is insisting that the ex-Mayor do time behind bars. Normally in such cases if the person in question does not have a previous history of offences, for a sentence of 2 years or less, this in normally not actually served behind bars but exchanged for some sort of community service. However; in this case the court has insisted that the ex-Mayor of Totana actually does time in jail. In addition to this jail sentence the ex-Mayor of Totana must also hand over 8 million €, relative small fry when you consider that he allegedly received 14 million € from his corrupt ways whilst in office. The court ordered the Guardia Civil to arrest the ex-Mayor of Totana, which up until the time of going to press was proving difficult, as his location is unknown. The ex-Mayor of Totana was

An Interview with Clr Francisco Garcia
Paco Garcia is the leader of PSOE locally, the main oppoosuition Labour Party. He is also a key member of the ruling coalition, which has brought together the new party led by Mayor Gines , David Fernandez and the left wing alliance IU, together with pepe Cmaposol based PaReMa. Both David and Pepe have Camposol connections, David having worked at the horel in the bar and pepe of course runs the ferreteria on sector A. Paco is a lonmg standing local poliotician having been around since the truen of the century and having led his party through three electrions. He is also scheduled to become overall mayor for the last year of the coalition before the next elections in three years time. When in opposition he was always available for constituents at the PSOE office in the middle of Mazarron, where he held a surgery every Friday night. The main point to remember about Spanish local government is that unlike the UK where there are committee running services, each service in Spain is run by a designated politician. This makes them powerful figures locally. However as Paco told the Journal, “this regime id different. We are a coalition and have to act accordingly. There are alwsys at least four of us involved in key decidions and we have to make sure that everyone goes along with any particular policy. He clearly regards the last year as as successful; as it could be under the current economic circumstances. We

JIGSAW THERAPY
by Anne Bennett
A London mapmaker and engraver, John Spilsbury is credited with commercialising jigsaw puzzles in or around the year 1760. They were originally created by painting a picture on to a flat rectangular piece of wood and then cutting it into small pieces with a jigsaw, hence the name. They have now come to be made primarily of cardboard. Having recently rediscovered the pastime of jigsaw puzzling I had forgotten how all absorbing and addictive this simple distraction is. As a 29 years of medical and legal child we translating in Spain, covering would, as a family, Camposol, Mazarrón, sit at the Pto Mazarrón table and and all Hospitals in Murcia. undertake over several nights puzzles of various degrees

of difficulty. It is a great exercise in patience and eye co-ordination for a young mind and for family bonding; except when one of you hides a piece and then produces it with flourish at the end after you have been searching for the hidden piece over several days ! Once started it becomes compelling to just find one more piece and then just complete one area or part, and then realise that three or four hours have passed and your glass of wine has become warm. So one somewhat addictive habit has surpassed another. The Alzheimer Society of Canada has recently stated that the activity of doing jigsaws helps keep the brain active and may contribute to reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. So this pastime could have real therapeutic value to an aging population. If you wish to re-discover this age old hobby for yourself there is a jigsaw swapping group on Camposol organised by the Welcome Group. It is located in the under build of the doctor’s surgery on sector B.

May the warmest and driest in 27 years
The month of May in the Region of Murcia has been very warm, as there were 14 days over 30 degrees Celsius, and very dry, and was the driest May in 27 years , said sources with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in a statement. During the first days of May, the weather in the region of Murcia was associated with a storm in front of the Galician coast. Between 8 and 13, a high pressure center was reinforced to the east and south of the peninsula, causing great stability, and entry to the region of the Saharan air mass. From 14, the north wind eased temperatures. Movement toward a Mediterranean Atlantic storm, inestabilizó the situation on 19 and 20. This storm,

The umbrella organization is known as Age Concern Espana, which is itself a member of the federation of AgeUK, formed from Age Concern and Help the Aged. Locally the organization has close links with the British Consular Services, the UK Department of Work and Pensions and the Royal British legion, in addition to a number of UK and Service charities. These important links enable the organisation to advise and help individuals who seek help. There is no direct funding from anywhere and all the work is dependent on volunteers. Its overall mission is to promote the well being of older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Its work with individual involves home visits
and assessments, befriending, matching volunteers and clients for long term support, liaising with Social services, loans of mobility equipment. All work is confidential but has in the past even involved help with repatriation. Age Concern is not a nursing agency and cannot provide that sort of care. Socially, the organization has a monthly social, talking shop, on the first Wednesday in the month at 1.30PM in the cultural centre on Camposol B. This is free and all are welcome. These events do compete with other charities who also fund raise but so far Age Concern has been very successful. Age Concern now has a base on Camposol. It was obviously a dog in some trouble. We scooted up the road and there was this forlorn little figure, a female Breton spaniel, being very sick. She had obviously eaten goat crap! She looked a bit pregnant and was filthy. She didn’t take much catching, she was so tired and ill. We bundled her

up in the car and took her home. It took four lots of washing in the bath to get her basically clean, and a good dosing of powder to get rid of the fleas and ticks. Poor little scrap, she didn’t turn a hair, just stood and let us wash her, the other dogs all looking on. She was ravenous which reinforced our opinion about pregnancy. What to do? Three dogs are our limit at the moment. I am still not mobile and one big dog one medium and one small is enough for my wife to walk. We ran Andrea of rescue fame, and she agreed to take her in. We met her at Pinilla and passed our pathetic little charge over. Andrea reported that she had a good night and the vet thought she was having a phantom pregnancy. A week later and she had settled in well. Anyone who takes her on will have a beautiful, intelligent, very loving

Dawn Llewellyn-Price
A friend born in Wales moved to England a decade ago. Every now and then she feels the need to be ‘re-Welshed’ as she calls it, usually achieved with a tin of Laverbread, some home-made Teisen Lap, and a rugby international on the telly. She’s good to go for another few months, until the urge for homeland comforts rears its dragon-like head once again. When I feel the need to be re-Spanglished, (soon after arrival) it’s ‘Mercadonna’ Big Prawns, a huge lemon, all flung into a terracotta bowl, a glass or three of the chilled white stuff, with a soundtrack of flamenco guitar on the terrace. Then I can breathe out the stresses of the journey, and remember where I am, and why I’m here. ( ‘Messi’ the rescue cat, ran straight to the front door, looked around once, remembered where he was and headed off into the delights of the Spanish night, his boat-bag still unpacked on the car seat. ) Having been back a few weeks, I still haven’t managed the Prawns yet. It’s all been a bit manic, with unpacking, friends flying in at short notice, and of course the Jubilee celebrations. So, still feeling a ‘Bit British’ once the Union flags and the Double Dragons (two hung off the terrace) came down, it was time to become a Chica Latina once more. Away with the Mail on Sunday, I need you no longer. Bring out the Costa Whatsit News and let’s have a perusal of El Mundo (the headlines at least, I can manage those.) It’s that time of year when the Michel Thomas CD’s are hastily listened to for an instant refresher in Spanish, and the colourful wardrobe that would barely see the light of day during a Welsh summer, becomes de rigueur, completing with the gaudiest any true Spaniard could muster. Like Blackpool rock, cut me and you’ll find ‘Desigual’ in large white letters. So, with the local (British) fiesta covering a weekend mid-June, our urbanisation took on the feel of Something Spanish instead of the usual medley of ‘BritBars’ and everything spoken in English. But I was still not re-Spanglished. In the wake of a diabolical Wales V Australia match, stumbling in the direction of the giant paella didn’t work either. That took one balmy San Javier Saturday night, in the Parque Almansa auditorium,
page 18
and the appearance of a certain young, handsome Almeria-born lad by the name of David Bisbal with a stage full of candelabras and an audience of (mostly) screaming women, self-included. Forget your preening X-Factor winners, this singer won a similar Spanish contest around a decade ago, and is still going strong, with hit after hit. When I excitedly told friends we’d managed to get tickets to see him for a second time in two years, they mostly whispered ‘Who?’ I came home in the early hours having shouted ‘otra, otra’ with the audience instead of ‘more, more’ and finally felt it was time for the prawns. I’m no lemon.
Out & About
With Rod Sawyer Missing a local jewel shouldn’t be easy, but on Camposol it can be. Bolleywood is one of Camposol’s first restaurants, and one we used from time to time. We did prefer another, but, having been told by three people how nice the new “Quality” restaurant is, we decided to give the Menu del Dia a chance on a Monday. It was super, if like us you are curry fans and haven’t tried it then please do. The Menu del Dia is 9.95E for two courses. The first course is a choice between bhajees, pakoras, or pupodoms. I chose the pupodoms and pickle tray, my partner had the chicken pakoras which came with salad. These were excellent. My pupodoms were perfect. Too often they are like crisps, and break off when you dip them in the pickle! Not so here, dry, firm and crunchy! The three dish pickle tray was a treat. Ok standard sweet mango, but a really nice tomato and a great hot chilli dish. We had ordered one rice and one garlic nan. The rice was good, separate grains, the nan covered in butter with fresh garlic! I had a rogan josh, I love this tomato dish medium hot and my wife had the palak, a lamb and spinach dish. Both are favourites and both lived up to their titles, as nice as we have had anywhere including Bradford! It is now real Indian cooking, I think, which makes a difference, especially for those of us from the North, We drank ice cold lemonade and beer, a shandy which really went well with the curry. The décor hasn’t really changed, Indian paintings and some light bhangra music, nice ambiance and attentive waiting. If you go in the evening don’t forget your CRA card to get a discount! I cant wait to try their byriani, which a friend has recommended as the best she has tasted. Bob Own recommends the chilli chicken! Meanwhile down in the port, Brits corner has some real competition. If you walk along the Paseo, from the underground car park, then you will come to Viggos. Age

Concern has done one of their Menu del Dia’s there and very successful it turned out to be. It also comes recommended by friends who did the daytime menu, and two others who have done the evening meal; the steak being very highly rated, as is the gazpacho, and the fish. Again, nicer ambiance and attentive waiting make a difference. Somewhere else that is well worth a try! Recently we also ate out at the Antipodes in Azohia. We arrived with some trepidation since the place was very full. But the waiting was excellent, and it wasn’t long before we were tucking into starters. This is another little jewel, especially in the summer when you can eat outside looking over the bay; the views are stunning. The food is definitely all right as well. We have spent one evening and a lunchtime up at the Camposol Golf Club. The bar and kitchens are now run by Jim and Margaret Stewart who have made an enormous difference to the place. The evening do was just a get together with some friends and eight of us sat down to Jim’s BBQ. There was a choice, burger or Hot Dog and chips with salad, or a 12 Euro monster, chicken, sausages, pork, burger, all very succulent. You helped yourself to the salad bar. Drinks are reasonably priced. There is always a band on and CAS Band played their hearts out on the terrace. It was a balmy evening, just enough breeze to keep it cool. A very nice night! The daytime do was Age Concern. The last Wednesday of the month is Menu Del Dia. They try to alternate and move it around, British, Chinese, Spanish have all figured. They are always 10Euors and include entertainment, starting at 1.30PM and finishing around 5PM the choice at the Golf club was between vegetable soup or pate as a starter, both excellent. The mains involved a choice between Steak Pie or sausage and mash. Every table had a large dish of vegetables and plenty of gravy. Everyone on our table except one had the Pie! James must cook quite the best steak pie in Spain, no exaggeration. There was a choice of dessert with our table eating crumble, lemon cheesecake or pavlova; all left very very clean plates! Johnny Sparrow played for the forty odd guests and ran through favourites all and new. They haven’t had a failure yet, and the golf club must go down as one of the best social venues. Next month, the last Wednesday don’t forget, its at the Peyma Restaurant in the port. This should be a treat as well. Easy to find since its in the middle of the port by the tourist shop. July sees a return to Camposol and a Vista Bar special BBQ, with entertainment arranged by Simon. This again should be one not to be missed, since Simon and Vicky and James & Louise ran some excellent BBQ’s at their previous bar, should be packed out so get your tickets early!

Camposol Fiesta 2012
A great weekend, if marred by problems with the electrics during the top band’s, Chess, performance. Maintaining the electrics for the weekend does seem a problem for Scorpio. Otherwise what a super time was had by all. Certainly the Saturday, day and evening attracted very substantial audiences. The Fiesta was opened just a little late by Cls David Fernandez, Pepe Gomez and by Isidro Foy. David is in charge of Mazarron’s environment and runs the bi monthly consultations, Pepe of course owns the ferreteria and represents Camposol. Isidro is responsible for the running of fiestas. They along with sponsors, Sr Munoz from Citroen, responsible for the car, Roberto from Norberto Talles, Bank Caixa and with his first excursion into sponsorship, David from the British garage, Declid in Mazarron and Mr print They were welcomed by Byron, who acted as maitre d for the whole weekend. David Fernandes spoke for all, in English, by welcoming the opportunity to visit and support Camposol. Immediately afterwards the queues for the paella started. Byron reckoned you needed a taxi to get to the end. The paella lasted half an hour and seemed to have fed everyone. Saturday afternoon at the stalls was a knock out. Every stall seemed busy, and everyone was there, H2O, PALS,
Lions, Noahs Arc, JJ puppies, IBEX Insurance Mabs, MAD, Age Concern, the football supporters, St Nicholas Church and the Wellspring Church who are there evry year. A beautiful restored min featured courtesy of Noberto. Next to David’s Declid stall. There were plenty of commercial ventures as well so there was variety. Virtually every stall had games to play or the compulsory pick a ticket out of the pail if it ends in 5 or 0, you win, usually a bottle of wine, otherwise known as tombola.. Age Concern even ran out of prizes. St Nicholas Church ran a stall with an opportunity to pick a duck out of the pail, or knock tin cans off the rail! The Church also ran a typical church fete best flowers, cakes, jams and chutneys. Best in show was a strawberry and fig chutney with walnuts (recipe a state secret!) put in by Renny Mullen. At the other end of the front row, Welspring Church looked after the inner person with hot dogs and burgers. In between Suzi looked after plenty of face painting. Meanwhile on the stage Rondella, a very traditional Spanish band, with an international repetoire entertained. They were well received and followed by line dancing and the singer Mary B The audience joined in with the line dancing which made for a party occasion. Camposol’s own Harlequin choir
entertained at about 7PM. They go on improving and could easily be heard at the back of the crowd on B. ell done Shirley and Anne. The bars did sterling work on both days. At the back was from Sector A the Vista bar, well lit up at night! Bali Hi, the Trevi, as always and the Market Tavern from the port, with Tracey in charge made up the front row. It was a beautiful evening, absolutely stacked out as daytime had been. There was a spectacular dance show by Louise’s young, well by and large young, dancers. This was really good. Its only two years since Louise set up her dance school. Already they are winning plaudits and prizes all over the place, and their show is the following weekend. The CAS band had two spots and played their hearts out as they always do. They now have a well defined following and reputation for uncompromising music, mixed with the nostalgic. How does one describe the Anthony Jarra Dancing? Not easy, the costumes alone are wonderful, the dancing traditional and very exact! They held the audience spell bound. The key part of the evening was Exodus, a reggae come scar band of some repute. Sounds of the Caribbean, and of UB40 ballooned out, after a short period of work on the electrics! The day finished off with a disco by Costa Calida radio. Many stayed
to the end of the day. Sunday started off with the Scruffs dog show run by Andrea. At the last minute Stevy T from the Radio station stepped in as compere. Some 20 dogs took part, five prizes with a fox terrier running away with the best in show. This was followed by presentation from Murcia Dance, well deserved and a Zumba Dance workshop Scorpio Sound and Mary B provided the afternoon music, with seven glamourous grannies braving the audience. Susie G plus three dancers stepped in at the last minute and did two stes. These were specially well received. There was a sound system problem with Chess, soon resolved, down to incompatible systems. The Ibex draw and the Fiesta car draw followed. The draw was won by Penny Pope, who owns a holiday home on Camposol. Chess who are probably one of the best tribute bands, Queen, did an excellent finale after what was the usual stunning fireworks. Costa Calida radio finishing off the weekend with its disco. Sadly no teams for the tug o war, but the fun run raised over 1700 Euros in sponsorhip. There will be more photos in August with all the names! Rod Sawyer

Hard water
As you may know, this area is renowned for its hard water. What is hard water? Hard water contains higher levels of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Water becomes harder as the mineral content increases. The build up of limescale is where the calcium and magnesium has deposited. Many common household problems are
due to limescale build up: Limescale can damage your pipes and appliances that use water such as your washing machine and kettle. Deposits of limescale can reduce the flow of water and can ultimately cause appliances to break and bring about the need for water pipes to be replaced. Hard water can make your clothes stiffer when they have been washed and can damage the fibers of clothes, giving them a shorter lifespan. Washing hair and skin in hard water can mean that not all soap is removed. This can lead to skin irritations and dull looking hair Limescale can block showerheads It forms on taps, sinks and baths. Limescale clogged boilers and other appliances can lead to longer running time, costing you a lot more than you think! Does this sound familiar? Well The H2ozone have the answer for you…And all for
ONLY 115€! Or 150€ Installed!
They are now selling Whole House Anti LimeScale Filters. These filters consist of two 10” canisters, which need to be fitted on the inlet pipe to the house, and they contain a sediment filter to removes dirt particles bigger than 5 micron and the 2nd filter contains SILIPHOS balls which help reduce the build up of Limescale. The system also comes with all connections needed for standard fitting. We only use the best metal

Stars over Camposol with Keith Jackson This month we are looking for the legendary strong man, Hercules Hercules is the fifth largest constellation and named after the Roman mythological hero adapted from the Greek hero Heracles. Hercules is probably the bestknown and greatest of all Greek/Roman heroes. Famed for his great strength, courage, and agility and, of course, his twelve labours. He also sailed with Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, took part in the war between the gods and the giants, and still had time to sack Troy. The God Zeus commemorated all the mighty acts of Hercules by placing his constellation in a very prominent place in the sky. However, although Hercules is a large constellation, it is not very bright which suggests he was perhaps better known for his brawn than his wits. Looking to the south the constellation of Hercules can be found high in the sky (almost directly overhead) between the very bright star Vega (in Lyra) and the kite

an asterism known as the Keystone as it resembles the wedge-shaped stone placed at the apex of a masonry arch to lock all the stones together. Hercules is depicted upside-down with his head represented by the star Rasalgethi.

Just below Hercules and directly under Corona Borealis (the Northern Crown) is the constellation of Serpens the Serpent (or Snake). Serpens is depicted coiled around the body of Ophiuchus the snake charmer and is unique in being the only constellation split into two non contiguous parts, Serpens Caput (Serpent’s Head) and Serpens Cauda (Serpent’s Tail) Among the myths associated with Serpens one claims this to be the serpent from the garden of Eden, or the one which attempted to slay the infant Hercules. In Greek mythology, Ophiuchus represents the healer Asclepius, who once killed a snake and then observed another snake bring it back to life using healing herbs. It is said that this was how Asclepius learned the secrets of medicine and to bringing people back from the dead, which is why the serpent was placed in the sky. This is also the origin of the “rod of Asclepius” symbol of a snake coiled around a sword or rod as used by the medical profession and seen on ambulances etc. To the left of Serpens and directly below Hercules about 45 degrees above the horizon is the constellation of Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer. The name is derived from the Greek for “man holding a snake”
and is generally identified with Asclepius the physician and ship’s surgeon of Argo Navis, a mythical sailing ship afloat on the southern Milky Way. If the southern sky is clear you may be able to make out the constellation of Scorpius or Scorpio (the Scorpion) below Ophiuchus and just rising above the horizon.
Scorpius, with a curled tail ready to sting, is one of the few constellations that need only a little imagination for its shape to be interpreted. The leading star is the super giant Antares, 8oo times the diameter of our sun. Its bright red colour makes it difficult to miss, indeed the name Antares translates as “anti-Ares” or “rival of Mars”. That’s all for now, I’m off for a cool Stella.

Report from Sector B gardeners
May has been characterised by a considerable increase in temperature and no rain. B Clean Gardening Group has spent the month weed killing and clearing the area around the Commercial Centre and Dual carriageway in preparation for the Fiesta. Some time has been spent watering the 900 Oleanders planted by B Clean Gardening Group. It will be a great help to the group if more people will help with the watering of these plants. If many people took a container and just watered a few plants each the Oleanders would greatly benefit. Everyone entering Camposol B will notice the new Welcome to Camposol sign. We would like to thank Mark from Inside Out for supplying the labour and materials to build the wall, this was a very public spirited gesture by Inside Out. Our thanks also go to Masa for their permission to construct the wall on their land. Our thanks also go to Ken for very kindly fixing the tiles to the wall. In the near future we are hoping to place a large urn at each end of the wall planted with flowers. We are hoping in some small way the new sign will enhance the entrance to Camposol B. At the end of June we will be reducing the heavy work to just weed spraying, rubbish collection and watering the plants. The group will recommence future
projects the first week of October when hopefully the weather will be more condusive to hard work. In the meantime we are still working to keep the area tidy any volunteers would be most welcome to join us. For more information on B Clean Gardening Group please contact Helen/ Glyn on 968199506 or Sandy 968986030. Helen B Gardening Group Secretary
D GARDENING AND COMMUNITY GROUP REPORT JUNE 2012 Since our last report, D Gardening and Community Group have been very busy keeping D looking good and adding new features. We have a second area of our Memory Garden at the end of the Saladillo waste ground, created and designed by Maureen and Clive Gritt. The garden has two benches donated by the group to commemorate Lynnette Sullivan and Graham Lewis. As a Poligono Rep Lynnette worked hard on our committee and as the husband of one of reps Graham also helped and supported our group. The features in the garden are magnificent and are the work of Clive Gritt. The idea of a Jubilee Garden to celebrate and mark the occasion of our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was bandied around for a few weeks and once again Maureen and Clive set to work assisted by the Friday volunteers and created a wonderful garden with some beautiful features. Comments on our website have praised and thanked the group for the work done on both. The group has assisted and built
two new Petanque courts for use by all our residents at D10 and D26. These additions to the facilities for our residents not only provide fun and laughter for the players but also improve the look of what would otherwise be a waste ground full of weeds and rubbish. We also continued weeding and gravelling around the whole of D – It reminds me of the story of the painters on the Forth Road Bridge who no sooner did they finish at one end then they went back to the other end to start again. Our volunteers do exactly that without fuss nor do they seek praise, they JUST DO IT. Without them I dread to think what our “village” would look like. John Hannah continued as our driver of the trailers and was out most days helping residents dispose of their gardening rubbish into the pits or taking items for residents to the eco park. Our concreting team continue repairing our roads and drain covers moving from area to area each week helping all our residents who drive, cycle or just walk around our delightful D. The team have even been know to work in the rain. They also provide the rest of us with “muscle” whenever we have jobs requiring heaving lifting or just a bunch of strongmen and women to supervise (Thanks Tina and Judy). On the last Thursday of May the team took a week off concreting but proceeded to trim the palm trees all the way up the dual carriageway right through to the roundabout at the golf club. On April 20th our Burning Pit Manager Jimmy Reynolds requested that we hold a BBQ to celebrate TWO very successful years during which time our two original pits have been enlarged considerably and a further THREE pits have been built. Bob and Brenda Owen provided us with sausage butties and a few glasses of wine were raised to celebrate this 2nd Anniversary. During the year we also placed a wall of concrete blocks that now make the area look very nice. Thanks to Jimmy and his helpers who work tirelessly and quietly throughout the whole year. Our website dedicated to D, continues

improving and all done by Steve our Computer Quizkid. The site keeps residents both here and abroad fully up to speed on happenings on D and also Camposol. On the social side we had a FUN Quiz in the Golf Club with the questions set and the evening conducted by Clive Gritt. He did say that as it was a “Fun” quiz the questions would not be too difficult – Oh Really, Clive!!! A great night was had by all and the quiz was followed by Dazzling Darren (Mike Bull) providing us with a bit of dancing music. Our Group Entertainment Reps Les and Linda Crook proposed that we hold a Jubilee Dance in the Golf Club to mark the occasion of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. At the same time as this was done FAST also decided to celebrate their 1st Anniversary and as our group has supported FAST on a couple of previous occasions both committee decided to hold a combined dance. This was held on 1st June and a brilliant evening was had by all. At the end of the proceedings, the accounts were done and a total of 539 euros was donated to FAST. Thanks to Les and Linda, the golf club staff, the group and DJ Mike for a spectacular event. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped decorate the club with our Union Jacks, bunting etc. Special thanks also for the appearance of “The Queen” accompanied by Prince Philip (KAZ Moore and Mick D). A big thanks must go to our Friday bucketeers and Brenda and June for their patience in counting the “Pennies”.
As big a thank you is also extended to our contributors who continue to support us week in week out with their very generous donations. Proving that all we do IS thoroughly appreciated by the majority of our D Residents. Further thanks go to our band of weeders, workers and general tidy uppers who work at all times around the whole of D quietly and assumingly keeping our D delightful. And of course further thanks go to our committee of volunteers who are ably marshalled and looked after by our very own Bob Owen who also looks after our accounts. Success on a small scale years ago has now built to success on a large scale. D Gardening and Community Group – DETERMINED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Mick Drummond Chairman.
Water on Camposol
May 27th saw the start of the annual summer water problem. Much of BC and D was off all Suncday and much of Monday. It was perfectly apparent that procedures were followed, with Linda Biggs from A, Tatiana in the office, and the CRA all following it up. The CRA site on the internet logged in numerous complaints about very low pressure. As is always the case, it appeared very difficult to ascertain the problem. Sector A, Los Palocios, is fed from a reservoir at the top of A. This has had its problems in the past

but was not affected this time. BC and D are fed from a resevoir on C. It appears that the problem was pumping water into the reservoir. It was Tuesday before any semblance of normality returned and since then there have been problems. The Journal did talk to Paco Garcia, the deputy mayor in charge of infrastructure a fortnight ago. He indicated then that there were discussions which had been “successfully” concluded with Aqualia. Six months ago the Town Hall was so concerned that it began to look at the possibility of other providers. On Sector A the residents all have direct contracts with Aqualia, negotiated several years ago. On B, C and D it appears that there has been some contract between MASA and Aqualia. This apparently broke down some months ago and it is a fact that bills for May at least have not gone out to these sectors. These problems are nothing new in Mazarron. The local media has been full of complaints about the appalling service offered by Aqualia; there is never any notice given of cuts, complaints are met with rudeness. It is also clear that Aqualia has made redundancies and has a workforce which has very low morale. Could another provider do better? We do live in a very dry and arid area. We have also had draught conditions for some years. This does mean that we need a modern and efficient service, which we do not get. It also appears that the present contract with Aqualia is in force for another six years. This is an issue which will not go away.

Cost of a rental car could treble
British travellers to Spain risk seeing the cost of a rental car trebled by “hidden fuel charges”, researchers for Which? Travel have found. The traditional model for car hire is that the vehicle is expected to be returned with same amount of fuel as when it was picked up: usually “out full, back full”, occasionally “out empty, back empty”. But with competition between rental companies intensifying, many firms in Spain have moved to an “out full, back empty” rule – with customers paying inflated rates for petrol or diesel that they may not be able to use. A researcher in Malaga was told that the cheapest initial car-hire price including basic insurance was €30 from Goldcar, compared with €78 for Avis. But when fuel was added on arrival, the Goldcar price rose to €94. In order to use all the fuel in the Fiat 500, Which? Travel calculated it would be necessary to drive 140km every day for a week. The magazine also found that the price used to calculate the value of the fuel was often inflated. A company called Record Spain, which provided the car booked through Holiday Autos, charged the equivalent of €1.98 per litre – one-third more than the price on Spanish forecourts. Chris Gray of Which? Travel said: “No-frills airlines have their hidden card surcharges. In car hire, the hidden charge has become fuel. Consumers should not be in a position where booking a car rental commits them to paying an unavoidable charge with no refunds, with no idea how much the charge may be.” Holiday Autos, the leading UK car-rental broker, tells customers: “At the booking stage of the online process, there is a sub-heading of ‘important information’. Under this section you can locate the fuel conditions for the specific car-rental
See our main advert on page 13 page 28
partner that will provide your car.” One reader told the magazine that he was so determined not to give fuel back to the car-hire company that he drove 50km with the gauge on empty. Road-safety campaigners have raised concerns that the policy could lead to holidaymakers running out of fuel on the motorway to a busy airport. A member of an online travel forum has suggested: “There is a good business opportunity for a tank-siphoning operation at each Spanish airport”.
MINI
MINI has revealed a revised version of the Rocketman concept, first seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Designed to coincide with the London Olympics this summer - of which BMW is a headline sponsor - the new Rocketman gets a Union Jack-inspired colour scheme and design flourishes, inside and out. The blue bodywork, with red and white accents, is designed to echo the British national flag - not only as a tribute to the Olympics, but to emphasise the MINI’s heritage. Exposed sections of carbon fibre hint at the Rocketman’s innovative underpinnings, which include a spaceframe made from carbon-fibre-
reinforced plastic, while the front grille is made up from interlinked MINI logos. The colour scheme continues on the inside, with striped seatbelts and there’s even a mini basketball match going on in the centre console. The transparent roof features illuminated braces forming another Union Jack motif. MINI insists that this latest iteration, which will be on

show at the BMW Group Pavillion close to the Olympic Village, is purely a design piece to welcome athletes to the games. However, it fuels speculation that a production version of the Rocketman, which was officially canned last year, could be back in MINI’s plans. For those of you in the know, oval circuit racing is now here in Cartagena! The newly opened circuit is incorporated into the track at the circuito de velocidad in Cartagena.....and its the first and only one of its kind in Spain! Race days started in earnest on Sunday the 3rd of June and will be held every fortnight thereafter, with competitors from all along the south coast.
Oval circuit racing
For those of you not in the know, oval circuit racing is speed racing(non contact) on a short track, anyone can enter,as long as they meet the safety criteria for themselves and their vehicles. In fact its a fairly cheap form of motorsport, there are even people there who will build you a car to your specification and budget! Vehicles race several laps of the track, with a winner for each race(starting with a handicap for the next race, dependant on their finishing place!) The car with the best overall finishing score, wins the race meeting. Sundays racing started at 7.00pm and the evening lasted until around 9.40pm.The spectator entry fee is 5eurosperperson,with discounts for families. But what fun it was!! I t helps no end at these events,of course, to have a “local lad” competing.....which we did! Dave Belcher or “Belchi” from Ken Sherwoods garage in La Pinilla, just ten minutes from Camposol, took BMW (Herman!) out on its first race since kitting it for racing. The Belchi fan club also turned out to support the event, with around 25-30 of us all perched on the bank overlooking the track....with of course our chairs, tables, cool

boxes and picnics!! Ten cars turned up for the first event, sponsors were pleased and hope to get more cars as the weeks go by.They all gave us achance to see what they could doby tearing around the course at breakneck
speed,a little taster of what was to come! In total four races were run, with a lap of honour in the back of the pace car for each victor, and a cup awarded.Belchi came in third in the first race, but once his tyres had bedded in,improved to second inthe next, and after a tight third race, second again!Everything hinged on the final race......even the supporters who claimed to have no real interest, but were just there for Belch, were on the edges of their seats by now!!........and he didn’t disappoint us all-romping home, with a handicap of a lap down to take first place, and the cup for overall champion of the day!! course was in great condition. The rough is only two inches high (unlike the 2 feet high rough at Condado). It didn’t need to be any higher in order to be punitive. At the end of each day the greens are hand watered, divots are filled in with green
I was there!
By John Brown I was there! I saw it all happening! It was right at the very beginning. At 11.00 a.m. on the 2nd of May 2012, the first scraping of soil by the JCB digger began. This signalled the start of work on the new Condado Clubhouse. This momentous event is right up there with the laying of the first Paramount stone (it should have happened at the end of May 2012), the opening of the airport at Corvera and the completion of the high speed train link from Madrid. Camposollers have long had a an excellent clubhouse, with changing rooms downstairs, showers, a pro shop and a large bar and dining area upstairs. A similar clubhouse has been open at Hacienda del Alamo for a few years. The residents and golfers at Condado need a new clubhouse. They need a clubhouse like the one at Camposol. Somewhere that they could go to at the end of a round, for a presentation, for a party, for a social evening with live music, for a barbeque or a quiz night, or even a karaoke. Somewhere to relax at the end of a hot day playing on an excellent golf course. Somewhere to retain the now large collection of trophies. Somewhere for the society’s 800 members to congregate during their second AGM (the inaugural one was held in March at the Sports Bar). So what Condadoers need is a clubhouse like Sensol’s. What Condadoers are going to get, however, is a sales office. Not just any old sales office, but the little grey one that can be seen to the right of the motorway as you head towards Murcia. The little grey and glass thing with the ‘Condado Alhama’ sign written on top. The plan is to move it from beside the motorway up to an area between the practice area and the first tee. So, after 2 weeks of golf at Condado, it was time for our annual trip to Estepona and the Volvo World Match Play at Finca Cortesin golf club (that’s if you can count 1 American and 2 South Africans as representing ‘the world’). Despite Condado being a great local course, it pales into insignificance beside the course at Finca Cortesin. The greens were like snooker tables at 12 on the Stimp Meter. The putts kept rolling on, an on, . . . The

sand, fringes are cut, ride on machines rake the bunkers, and an army of staff walk the course to remove any loose turf and fill in divots. Watching professional golfers up close is a privilege. On the practice area, we watched Paul Lawrie hit booming drives with a rhythm to kill for. Justin Rose’s chipping was unbelievably accurate on the practice area. It was no surprise that they both played well. We followed Nicolas Colsaerts and Charl Schwarzel for most of their round. Charl is a Major winner and no slouch off the tee, but he was being massively out driven by Nicolas Colsaerts. Nicolas was about 50 yards ahead of Charl on most of his drives. He averages 320 yards on his drives. His power is actually shocking when you are standing right next to him. We were only about 5 yards away from many of his tee shots, and that clubto-ball-contact was shockingly violent. He never missed a fairway. His only weakness was some over-

hit pitch shots. He’d make a good outside bet for The Open. As we passed the plethora of courses around Estopona, we couldn’t help noticing the offers and deals that were being advertised. Most of the courses can be played at a price of between 35 and 40 Euros. There are very variable forms of membership also. Our local courses here don’t offer the variety of membership types that are required – particularly for the holiday homeowners. There are many hundreds of holiday homeowners in Camposol and Condado. The annual membership is too long, and there isn’t a half-yearly membership or quarterly year membership on offer that would be attractive to holiday homeowners. So, a heart-felt plea from this holiday home owner – ‘Come on guys, give us a halfyear or quarter year membership!’
Although the football season is now over, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC supporters continue to be very active during the summer months. Over 100 people attended the annual
2012
Player of the Year Dinner on Monday 28th May at La Sienna Restaurant in Mazarron when, for the first time, three trophies were awarded. The annual Los Amigos de Mazarron Supporters’ Player of the Year Trophy was presented to the captain, Diego by outgoing President Dave Marks. The new trophies, donated by Los Amigos, were for the Young Player of the Year award which was voted for by the juvenile squad and presented to Jose Da by Football Liaison Officer, Steve Spencer. Finally, the most prestigious award, the Players’ Player of the Year, voted for by the players themselves also went to 17 year old Jose Da who is, most

certainly, a star of the future. Jose Da was presented with the trophy by Tina Capper, wife of the new President of Los Amigos, Dave Capper. Guests enjoyed a splendid four course meal washed down by copious amounts of house wine and local beer. The evening was once again organised splendidly by Social Secretary, Andy Riley and the players themselves entered into the spirit of the evening with regular appearances on the dance floor to the excellent music of Backwater. Another date for the diary is Tuesday 25th September when Los Amigos host a spectacular tribute to the Beatles at Mariano’s Restaurant, Camposol. The Backbeat 4 Beatles will be making the journey down from Alicante to provide the entertainment and tickets are now on sale at €15, including a chicken and chips supper or €10 without supper. Tickets are already selling well so, to reserve yours, please ring Andy on 634040990, Dave on 626465847, email losamigosdemazarronfc@hotmail.co.uk or call at the Trevi Bar, Commercial Centro B, Camposol any Thursday between 3 pm and 4 pm prior to the Los Amigos de Mazarron FC weekly meeting. Details will be announced shortly about the 4th Annual Gala Evening and Dinner which will be held at the Hotel la Cumbre on Tuesday 12th March 2013. The event
2012
has been moved back a few weeks to ensure that travelling plans for the visiting VIPs and other guests from England are not affected by adverse weather conditions in the UK. Following the huge success of this year’s dinner, demand is sure to be great. With regard to football matters, plans are already being formulated for next season when Mazarron will play in the Primera Autonomica and it is hoped that most of this year’s successful juvenile squad will remain with the Club as it attempts to gain promotion back to the Preferente at the first opportunity. The 2011/12 season saw the first English player to appear for Mazarron. 18 year old Matt Clarke made 19 appearances and is one of a number of promising youngsters in the juvenile ranks. It is understood that another two young English players have been identified as possible recruits for the cadetes and juvenile squads which will further add to the interest of the ex-pat community in Mazarron. During the summer months, Los Amigos will continue to hold weekly meetings every Thursday at the Trevi Bar, Commercial Centro B, Camposol at 4 pm. Non members are welcome to join us at all meetings except for the monthly Members Business Meetings on Thursday 26th July and Thursday 30th August which are for members only. Membership of Los Amigos has been held at €10 and for the sixth year in a row and runs from 1st August each year. New applications and renewals are now being accepted at our weekly meetings.
Some Olympic facts
The Official Olympic Flag Created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1914, the Olympic flag contains five interconnected rings on a white background. The five rings symbolize the five significant continents and are interconnected to symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions. The rings, from left to right, are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The colors were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country in the world. The Olympic flag was first flown during the 1920 Olympic Games. Real Gold Medals The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were awarded
in 1912. The Medals The Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city’s organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimeters thick and 60 millimeters in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold. The First Opening Ceremonies The first opening ceremonies were held during the 1908 Olympic Games in London. Opening Ceremony Procession Order During the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the procession of athletes is always led by the Greek team, followed by all the other teams in alphabetical order (in the language of the hosting country), except for the last team which is always the team of the hosting country. A City, Not a Country When choosing locations for the Olympic Games, the IOC specifically gives the honor of holding the Games to a city rather than a country. IOC Diplomats In order to make the IOC an independent organization, the members of the IOC are not considered diplomats from their countries to the IOC, but rather are diplomats from the IOC to their respective countries. The First Marathon In 490 BCE, Pheidippides, a Greek soldier, ran from Marathon to Athens (about 25 miles) to inform the Athenians the outcome of the battle with invading Persians. The distance was filled with hills and other obstacles; thus Pheidippides arrived in Athens exhausted and with bleeding feet. After telling the townspeople of the Greeks’ success in the battle, Pheidippides fell to the ground dead. In 1896, at the first modern Olympic Games, held a race of approximately the same length in commemoration of Pheidippides. The Exact Length of a Marathon During the first several modern Olympics, the marathon was always an approximate distance. In 1908, the British royal family requested that the marathon start at the Windsor Castle so that the royal children could witness its start. The distance from the Windsor Castle to the Olympic Stadium was 42,195 meters (or 26 miles and 385 yards). In 1924, this distance became the standardized length of a marathon.

Property, Financial and Legal IS THERE ANY PRIVACY??!! The law of privacy is concerned with the protection and preservation of privacy and rights of individuals. Increasingly,
governments and other public as well as private organizations collect vast amounts of personal information, for a variety of purposes. The law of privacy regulates the type of information which may be collected and how this information may be used and stored. Privacy has long been recognised as an important human right – although there has to be a balance in society between the exercise of that right for the protection of others, and the right to freedom of expression. What is at stake ? ie. at one end of the scale security cameras on the street can be paramount for the protection of the public, whereas in a different environment they would amount to an invasion of privacy. Maybe we are not surprised why the introduction of

XRay equipment was not introduced at airports, despite the initial thoughts as to the benefits. How much of someone’s private life should be open to scrutiny? We can all remember celebrities resorting to the Courts when their privacy has been invaded. Can the granting of these Super Injunctions be justified, even if the person concerned is in the public eye ? In the area of access to information, many different organisations and authorities hold information about us all, some of which can be accessed quite easily, and other information which cannot be divulged without the authority of the individual concerned (ie Data Protection) or a Power of Attorney. Alternatively,

it can be necessary to apply for a Court Order for the release of such information. It’s all a matter of knowing where to look for the information you need and having the appropriate access, or following the appropriate route to obtain the information.

When to hand, that information has to be treated in confidence and not divulged to anyone else without the consent of the person concerned. Property, Financial and Legal Banking with Benefits Currencies Direct & la Caixa
Currencies Direct are the only foreign exchange provider to have created a national agreement with a Spanish bank. Their partnership with “la Caixa”, Spain’s leading savings bank came about in response to the needs of their customers. Peter Loveday, Head of Sales for Currencies Direct and based in Mojacar explains: “many of our clients asked us why banking in Spain was so expensive, particularly when clients were repatriating funds from selling their properties in Spain. Previously no matter what we saved them on their foreign exchange transactions they still had to pay commission when depositing a Spanish banker’s draft into their own bank account and the fees to send Euros to the Currencies Direct Euro client bank account could be exorbitant.” Currencies Direct approached “la Caixa” with a wish list for their clients and an exceptional agreement has been established which gives clients all the benefits they have been looking for from a Spanish bank. Thus the commission free bank account was created. There is zero commission when depositing Spanish bankers Drafts and no fees whatsoever to transfer funds from the UK to Spain and the reverse when using a Currencies Direct “la Caixa” account. The Currencies Direct “la Caixa” bank account has many more benefits on reducing banking costs, for example for raising Spanish Bankers draft when purchasing property in Spain along with debit and credit cards. “We’ve arranged for clients to have access to online banking in English which is another plus point for our clients,” says Peter Loveday, “and what’s more, any transfers are instant. No more cut-off times!” Those interested in learning more about the benefits and in turn opening a Currencies Direct “la Caixa” account need to contact their nearest Currencies Direct office www.currenciesdirect. com to register as a client. Existing Currencies Direct clients can go to any of the 5500 branches of “la Caixa” to open a Currencies Direct “la Caixa” account. to be able to offer the whole of Sector A the special rates that the other sectors enjoy, there needs to be 18 more clients sign up. In order to help achieve this Luis is prepared to offer anyone signing up to the service during the month of July, the discounted rate of 10€ including I.V.A. If 18 homes sign up, then all of the existing clients, currently on the old rate, will also benefit from this discount. To find out more information , and to sign up to the security scheme, then call into the business centre on A sector or call 968 103 008
POLIGONO SURVEILLANCE
Some months ago the security company owned by Luis Canovas of the business centre on A sector began a special poligono offer to all the residents of Camposol. It was proposed that if enough homes on any one sector joined the security patrol scheme, then all residents of that sector would benefit from a low rate of 10€ per month including IVA instead of 17.70€ per month which was the case previously. The proposal was very well received and within a couple of months sectors B,C and D had enough subscribers to enable the company to offer them this discounted rate. This rate was applicable to all previous and new subscribers to the scheme and has proved to be very successful so far. Luis is concerned that the only people not currently benefiting from this discounted rate are the residents of A Sector. This is due to a lack of uptake on the offer. As things stand those who live on A sector and subscribe to the security service currently pay the old price of 17.70€ per month. In order

MABS EVENTS IN MAZARRÓN May 2012
Welcome to the Summer.......It aint half hot mum........So please remember that you can take your clothes off, BUT pets can´t take their coats off so take extra care with your animals over the next couple of months. A couple of weeks ago I went to Las Palas where a group of us tried to catch a galgo that had a broken leg. It was 10.30 at night and the dog became elusive. But as we stood by the roundabout I was joined by a very small and very young pup. He was white with a black head and a patch on his back. He came straight to me and wanted to be picked up he was very lethargic and made no sounds. The settled in my arms and rested. ´Domino´ as we called him became our next rescued dog. The following day arrangements had been made to remove the remaining Galgos from the gypsy camp in Mazarron by Galgos Del Sol and of course we were there to help. A further and we believe the last, five galgos were removed and were being transported to GDS kennels. We had been informed that same morning of a pup that was dehydrated and suffering in La Pinilla. So on route we decided to take a look. There we found a very, very thin extremely ill galgo pup we called ´Faith´. She too was then taken into our care. However that same evening another call from the same village showed that there was at least one more pup around that same area. ´Hope´ saw in a worse state that ´Faith´ and needed a vet immediately. She was diagnoses with Parvo virus, so the following morning the other two were taken in to be on the safe side. It transpired that all three had the virus. ´Hope´ died during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The other two fought the virus with the help of drugs, love and kindness and half a litre of plasma that I had to bring from Murcia, along with a 10 day stint in the hospital . ´Faith´ is not out of the woods as yet but she is a fighter, ´Domino´ on the other hand is a little bruiser and is up to all kinds of mischief. We have also taken in ´Joe´ he is a Cocker Spaniel, found in a dreadful state in the mountains , It looked as if he has spent a few months living with the goats and sheep. He was covered in tics and fleas his coat was matted and he was very hungry. He now sports his new summer cut, his ´little friends´ have all been killed off and he smells like a dog once more. He has such a loving playful nature and is completely housetrained. Why someone thought to abandon him is beyond me!! He is a friend to be proud of. A rumour has been circulating around Camposol that Andreas Animal Rescue, have dogs destroyed. We are in the business of rescuing animals, we will not have a dog, cat, or any other animal destroyed unless our vet thinks that it is in the best interest of the ANIMAL and that it does not have a good quality of life. If we were just seeking an easy solution then the pups, ´Faith´ ´Domino´ and ´Hope´ would have been put to sleep. Please take a look at our facebook page, join our group and have a look at what we get up to. As always I will be on B sector carpark on Monday mornings, to answer any questions you may have, or to pick up any donations of bric-brac clothes etc Here are a couple of our dogs wanting forever homes. Till next time ´Keep Cool¨xxxx

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why you don’t ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery”? Why “abbreviated” is such a long word? Why doctors call what they do “practice”? Why you have to click on “Start” to stop Windows 98? Why lemon juice is made with artificial flavour, while dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons? Why the man Who invests all your money is called a broker? Why there isn’t mouse-flavoured cat food? Who tastes dog food when it has a “new & improved” flavour? Why they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? Why they don’t make the Whole plane out of the material used for the indestructible black box ? Why sheep don’t shrink when it rains? Why they are called apartments when they are all stuck together? if con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? Why they call the airport “the terminal” if flying is so safe? The Pseudo Posh
Have you ever noticed How the Pseudo-posh Speak so very slowly While they’re talking tosh?
A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in their bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front him. He appears deep in thought. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of coffee. “What’s the matter, dear?” she whispers as she steps into the room.“Why are you down here at this time of night?” The husband looks up, “Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 17?” he asks solemnly. The wife is touched thinking her husband is so caring and sensitive. “Yes, I do,” she replies. The husband pauses. The words are not coming easily. “Do you remember when you father caught us in the back seat of my car?” “Yes, I remember,” says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues...”Do you remember when he shoved a shotgun in my face and said, “Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years”. “I remember that too”, she replies softly. He wipes another tear from his cheek and says.. “I would have gotten out today! Martin Sallu Plastics

Dreams of animals
Their phoney, classy accents Are clearly bolted on, So they have to be so careful Lest they speak with the real one. When you hear them saying ‘Nay-oo’ They’re really saying ‘No’’ And ‘Ears’ actually means ‘Yes,’ And ‘Gay-oo’ just means ‘Go.’ Every Pseudo-poshie Is required be One who speaks precisely In an accent that is twee. Pseudo poshies cannot show Their lowly origins In their way of speaking, That is high in Pseudo sins. Listen and you’ll understand Why the Pseudo-posh Speaking cripplingly slowly While they’re talking tosh. 30.05.2012
