JOURNAL

THE Dear Reader,

Here we are in July, more than halfway through the year. It really is becoming worrying just how quickly time passes. More worrying for others than myself, I must add. Take our wonderful graphic designer Danny McCarthy of Insignia Graphics for example. Danny is celebrating his 50th birthday! We would like to wish him the happiest of birthdays and hope that he has a great time with his family and friends. Danny has worked tirelessly designing our magazine for the last 2 years and such is the magnitude of his herculean effort , he claims to have been only 25 years old when he started! We would like to say a massive welcome to our new advertisers this month. There are quite a few, and also welcome on board 2 new contributors Allan Doyle and Anne Bennett. Both are excellent writers and we look forward to reading their articles in the future. Be sure to look out for Dawn Llewellyn Prices column which we ended up receiving by a mix of telegram and Morse code, but she got it over to us, just in time! As we are all aware the area is really busy at this time of year with lots of people here on holiday. Camposol is particularly busy as anyone who vists Consum on a Saturday morning can testify to! I have had phone calls and emails in the dozens with people complaining about parking and bad driving. There is not really a lot I can do about this other than to remind all of our readers to take care when driving. If the car park at Consum is full, please don’t queue on the road outside waiting for a space. Its dangerous, not to mention frustrating for other drivers. Also please don’t park half on the road half on the pavement at the exit to the B Sector Commercial centre. There is a blind spot there caused by the electricity box. Add a parked car to the equation and getting out of there safely is like paying Russian roulette. And this one goes without saying: Please don’t drink and drive. Enjoy this month’s magazine! CRA

It has long been thought by the CRA Central Liaison Committee that we need to take a more proactive approach in the political scene of Mazarron. We started that process at the last AGM where we removed from our rules the statement that we were a non-political organisation. Since then our Political Sub Committee have worked hard to prepare the ground for Camposols own political party. That work is now complete and we now need three Spanish citizens to establish that party, something we ex pats cannot do under Spanish law. The CRA have funded this work but it is now for interested individuals to take it over, the CRA itself will not be a political party. Since the last election the PP and PSOE parties have made no contact with the CRA. That indicates the level of interest they have in helping us achieve our aims. The PP party even voted against the bridge repairs for Camposol, which in itself speaks volumes. Bob Owen and his team have had a number of private meetings with the party officials of the UIDM. They successfully negotiated to appoint Jose Navarro as our District Mayor, a major step forward for Camposol. One of our own committee, a Spanish citizen and resident of Camposol, now with direct access to the town hall officials. This is paying dividends already and many residents problems have been resolved by Jose.

The UIDM stated that they are committed to Camposol and to resolving its many problems, albeit they are complex and it will take some considerable time to resolve them all. They said they wanted to work with the CRA to achieve these aims and readily admitted they needed our help. They want us to take a proactive part in this process and offered Bob and Jose positions on the executive committee of the UIDM. This will involve weekly meetings and will give us access and input to the decision making process of the UIDM and ultimately the council. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by cooperating with the UIDM. Bob made it quite plain to them that if they do resolve Camposols problems we would not need our own political party. Mazarron’s political past has seen both the PSOE and PP parties in power. The latter alienated the people which prompted the UIDM to form. Juan Pedro Martinez, party spokesman has stated that they are not the usual type of politicians but just people who wanted to work hard to improve the lives of all Mazarron´s citizens including Camposolian´s.

F.A.S.T Spring Ball a huge success Our first F.A.S.T Spring Ball was a truly magnificent event and a real night to remember. Over 100 people attended our Spring Ball which was held in the beautiful setting of The Restaurante Amapola in Bolnuevo. They provided us with an excellent 4 course meal with the superb service that we have come to expect from this ever popular venue. It also gave us all the chance to dress up in our evening wear which only made the event that little bit more “special”. With 2 coaches from Camposol and many others coming from the Puerto De Mazarron and surrounding villages, everyone was able to relax and enjoy a drink or 2 as well, which only added to the great party atmosphere. The entertainment courtesy of “The Wildcat” also went down extremely well as they cover a variety of artistes including Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and Cher, to name but a few. We will definitely be inviting them back to future events as they had everyone up on the dance floor before the meal was even finished! We raised over €600 from this event and would like to say a big thank you to all the FAST supporters who made this event possible, we could not provide this invaluable service without you

SUMMER SALE

TOO HOT TO SLEEP?

Cool Down, Relax and Sleep Well with a Chillow Pillow 4 out of 5 Brits “flip the pillow” in search of the cool spot According to new research recently issued, four out of five Brits suffer disrupted sleep as they repeatedly turn their warm pillow over in search of a cool spot, and that’s just in Britain! With summer night temperatures here in Spain of 30 degrees plus, a good night’s sleep is even more difficult. The research found that 80% of Brits flip their pillows in bed at night with 37% saying they flip their pillows frequently. The research also revealed that pillow flipping is not a gender issue. 81% of men and 78% of women admitted to pillow flipping. Sleep Expert, Dr Neil Stanley, said: “Sleep is a biological necessity and good sleep is essential to good physical, mental and emotional health. During the night the body needs to lose heat in order to sleep and this is done mainly through the head and face. However if the bedroom, bed or pillow is too hot then the body may not be able to sufficiently cool itself and sleep can be disrupted.” However, relief is now available in the form of the Chillow Pillow - a personal cooling pad now available at Yorkshire Linen. The Chillow is a thin, cushioned pad (made from medical-grade, hypoallergenic, non-toxic materials) that lies on top of a normal pillow (or inside the pillowcase) to take heat away from the body and keep the user cool throughout the night. Like many great inventions, the Chillow is remarkably simple. It works on the principle that water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air - which is why people feel cold when they come out of a swimming pool. As well as helping to induce sleep, the Chillow also provides soothing relief from fever, aches and pains, hot flushes, injury and irritating skin conditions such as sunburn and acne. It is particularly beneficial within oncology where cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy suffer from severe overheating. The Chillow provides them with instant, non-evasive relief. The Chillow works without power, chemicals or refrigeration. It remains permanently at room temperature (usually 10 to 20°C below body temperature) and unlike gel-pads, which have to be prefrozen, it is always ready for use and is soft not hard, dry not wet, cool not cold. The Chillow is flexible and soft to touch and has memory foam properties. You’re always cool with a Chillow, now available at Yorkshire Linen above the Mercadona in Puerto de Mazarron.

Pamplona bull run

The fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona, in the region of Navarra, every year from the 6th to the 14th of July. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners. The fiestas are celebrated in honor of

San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years. Nowadays, the fiestas are seen as a mass gathering of people from all the corners of the world and where the partying, the fun and the joy of it all are the most outstanding ingredients. The Encierro ... The Running of the Bulls The Encierro is the event at the heart of the Sanfermines and makes the fiesta a spectacle that would be unimaginable in any other place in the world. It was born from need: getting the bulls from outside the city into the bullring. The encierro takes place from July 7th to 14th and starts at the corral in Calle Santo Domingo when the clock on the church

of San Cernin strikes eight oclock in the morning. After the launching of two rockets, the bulls charge behind the runners for 825 metres, the distance between the corral and the bullring. The run usually lasts between three and

four minutes although it has sometimes taken over ten minutes, especially if one of the bulls has been isolated from his companions. Chants to San Fermin The bull run has a particularly emotional prelude. It is when the runners, just a few metres up the slope from the corral where the bulls are waiting, raise their rolled newspapers and chant to an image of San Fermin placed in a small recess in the wall in the Cuesta de Santo Domingo. Against the strongest of silences, the following words can be heard: “A San Fermin pedimos, por ser nuestro patron, nos guie en el encierro dandonos su bendicion.” (We ask San Fermin, being our patron saint, to guide us in the bull run and give us his blessing). When they finish they shout “Viva San Fermin!, Gora San Fermin.” This chant is sung three times before 8am first, then when there are five minutes to go before 8am, then three minutes and one minute before the gate of the corral is opened. Rockets in the bullring The third rocket, fired from the bullring, signals that all the bulls have entered the bullring. A fourth and final rocket indicates that all the bulls are safely in the corral located inside the bullring, and that

second group of bullocks (the so-called “sweep-up” group), which are slower and smaller than the first one, are let out to lead any bulls that might have stopped or been left behind in the bull run towards the bullring.

The role of the pastores A large number of pastores (bull “shepherds”) cover the entire bull run. They place themselves behind the bulls,

Useful information about the bull run The encierro is an unrepeatable experience for spectators and runners alike. It is a spectacle that is defined by the level of risk and the physical ability of the runners. An inexperienced runner should learn about the characteristics of this dangerous “race” (although it should not be considered as a race) before starting, and also about the protective measures to be taken for his/her own safety and that of the people running alongside.

with their only protection being a long stick. Their main role is to stop the odd idiot from inciting the bulls from behind, to avoid the bulls turning round and running backwards, and to help any bulls that have stopped or have been separated from their companions to continue running towards the bullring. The dobladores Other key people in the bull run are the dobladores, people with good bullfighting knowledge (sometimes ex-bullfighters) who take up position in the bullring with capes to help the runners “fan out” (in other words, run to the sides after they enter the bullring) and “drag” the bulls towards the corral as quickly as possible.

the bull run has ended. A fence of 3,000 parts For security reasons, a double fence marks out the route of the bull run

Not everyone can run the encierro. It requires cool nerves, quick reflexes and a good level of physical fitness. Anyone who does not have these three should not take part. It is a highly risky enterprise. Runners should start somewhere between the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) and the pink-slab Education building in the Cuesta of Santo Domingo, and they should be there before 7:30am because entry to the run is closed from that time on. The rest of the run, except for the stretch mentioned above, must be completely clear of runners until a few minutes before 8am.

The two groups of mansos (bullocks) The six fighting bulls that will take part in the evening bullfight start the run accompanied by an initial group of mansos, which act as “guides” to help the bulls cover the route. Two minutes after leaving the corral in Santo Domingo, a

The English language is without doubt the most important language in the world today followed by Spanish and probably Chinese. Whether it is for future career prospects, both within Spain and abroad, or simply for travel, a working knowledge of English is a tremendous asset. There has long been a tradition of student exchange between families in Spain and the United Kingdom, usually during the summer months. This has enabled the participants to not only improve their language skills, most especially their pronunciation and, critically, their knowledge of colloquial English but to immerse themselves in another culture with families from very different traditions, history and customs – a truly mind broadening experience. However, these exchanges are quite complex to arrange and can be very expensive, especially with the current financial crisis. The objective of our “zip”

100 years ago on July 13th 1913 Death Valley in the Arizona Desert displayed the kind of heat that has earned it a reputation as one of the world’s most extreme environments. On that day in the 3.3-million-acre desert wilderness along the California-Nevada state line the mercury a whopping reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit, (or 62.7degrees Celsius in our money) setting a record that has stood unbroken for 100 years. Here, some of the hottest weather on the planet lives side-by-side with mountains whose peaks are often covered in snow. Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the western hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level and lies less than 90 miles away from 14,505-ft.-high Mount Whitney, the highest point in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. But how extreme can Death Valley’s weather get? It seems that they call it Death Valley for a reason. Legend has it that he place got its name in 1849, when a group of gold rush pioneers set out from Salt Lake City in search of a shortcut to California. Instead, they got lost and ended up stranded for weeks on the salt flats of the valley, battling hunger and thirst as they awaited rescue. They were saved when two men from their party finally returned after a month, having they walked more than 300 miles

for supplies and back. As the rescued group finally left one of them turned and said “Goodbye, Death Valley.” If you are wondering just how hot it can actually get then consider this: The day Death Valley reached its world record maximum temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit on July 10, 1913 it was part of a week long stretch of severe heat, during which temperatures reached 129°F or 53.8 Degrees Celsius on five consecutive days. In the summer of 2001, temperatures reached 100°F (37.7 Celsius) for 154 consecutive days, while the summer of 1996 saw 105 days over 110°F (43.3 Celsius) and 40 days when the mercury reached 120°F. (48.8 Celsius) Incredibly in some years, Death Valley sees no rainfall at all. In 1929 and 1953, no rain was recorded in Death Valley. For 40 straight months between 1931 and 1934, less than one total inch of rain fell (0.64 inches, to be exact) in what is its longest dry spell on record. So by comparison, we really do have quite cool summers here on the Costa Calida. Next time you think of complaining it’s too hot, have a cold beer or spritizer, a plunge in the pool and lie back on your sun lounger while getting your husband to fan you with a palm frond. Save Money on Funeral Expenses “Buy Today Die Tomorrow However Long You Live” NO this is not a Joke! As with all other goods and services in Spain Funeral Expenses are rising in price annually – So our commitment to You is: *Fixed price Funeral Plan from Day 1 *Price is frozen from the moment you sign *No hidden extras added at time of death *Totally interest free, the price you see is the price you pay *VAT/IVA exempt We are a fully legal Spanish SL Company and we know that other Companies in the market place cannot commit to the above, so before you make a decision consider this: Do not believe all you see and hear. Check out the facts before committing to something you may later regret, look at the small print for the hidden payments/extras above the basic cost of a funeral plan, what’s the interest rate being charged for the pleasure of paying by instalments? Is there a front end or rear end payment above the cost of the plan, are the terms and conditions just that terms and conditions, or a statement of intent allowing additional costs to be added at the sellers whim. Competition is Healthy so why is it feared? Please look at our website prices start at €3390, our IVA exemption certificate is there, from the Spanish Tax Office, so are our terms and conditions. IFP – Iberian sell only Funeral Plans we are not an Insurance Company, an Insurance agent, a one man band or a UK Company selling into Spain, all our written plans are registered with the Spanish Authorities (Hacienda) so for an ethical, secure, cost saving solution to funeral expenses Reg no 11138305//CIF no B93156107 IFP – Iberian offering Safety, Security & Savings

Crisis: Entire Mediterranean Beach Resort Abandoned!

Varosha in it’s hey day

Was the headline on July 20th 1974 in newspapers across the globe. In the early 1970’s the Varosha quarter in Famagusta, Cyprus was one of the Mediterranean’s most glamorous and popular tourist destinations. The bright blue waters and beautiful sandy beaches were host to celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot among others. The population was around 39,000, but during 1974 the town would be conquered by Turkish troops, fenced off completely, and have a population of zero. Today what was once a millionaire’s playground sits eerily quiet and decaying, a land that time forgot. The island of Cyprus has been the subject of a constant tug-of-war battle between Greece and Turkey for centuries. Until 1974 both Greek and Turkish Cypriots were able to coexist on the island largely without incident.

However in August of 1974 the Turkish military seized the predominantly Greek Varosha quarter of Famagusta. Residents – fearing being slaughtered by the advancing tanks – fled the city with only the clothes on their backs, leaving all possessions behind. Other sections of Varosha were bombed by the Turkish air force, destroying many buildings. Once the Turks had gained control of the area they fenced it off, and have since refused admittance to anyone. Varosha lies frozen in time. Homes still have closets full of clothes, cabinets full of dishes, and there is even a car dealership still stocked with ‘brand new’ 1974 model-year cars. Dozens of hotels along the coastline sit empty with broken windows exposing fully-furnished rooms to the elements. Countless cars sit collecting dust in garages. There is even a construction crane still towering above

Varosha now

the skyline, the hotel it was constructing also frozen in time and never finished. Varosha is protected by a 1984 UN Security Council resolution that states the empty town can only be resettled by its original inhabitants. This resolution has prevented Turkish authorities from re-opening Varosha as they are in no hurry to return it to the Greeks. Some speculate Turkey is holding Varosha as

Until Turkey relinquishes Varosha, it will continue to be battered by the elements and slowly crumble over time. Turkish troops still patrol the area and are authorized to use lethal force, so enter at your own risk.

The future is not bright for Varosha; the entire city is beyond repair. Experts have pointed out that almost forty years of unmaintained exposure to the elements has taken its toll on the structures. Engineers assert the city would have to be completely torn down and rebuilt as nearly all of the buildings are unsafe and have major structural damage. Roads are cracked with overgrowth, water pipes underground have disintegrated, the sewage system has crumbled, and the power grid infrastructure is now antiquated. Rebuilding Varosha would require a complete razing with rebuild costs estimated conservatively at 100 billion. Perhaps that is a contributing factor to why, at this point, there is no rush for a resolution.

Revue of White Cargo

by Anne Bennett

Researched and written by Don Jordan and Michael Walsh this book is the forgotten history of Britain’s White Slaves in America. Don Jordan is a television producer and director of dozens of documentaries and drama. He also co-produced and co-wrote “Love is the Devil” a book and feature film about the life of Francis Bacon. Michael Walsh spent more than twelve years as a reporter and presenter on World in Action and has won six awards for his work. At the time of writing this book he was a producer specialising in Political and Historical documentaries. Drawing on letters, diaries, court and government archives which demonstrated the cruelty and brutality normally associated with Black Slavery, but were perpetrated on whites throughout British rule in the 17th and 18th centuries. More than 300,000 people became slaves there in all but name, the exploitation and cruelty spanning more than 170 years. Children were rounded up from the streets of London and other large cities, virtually kidnapped to fulfil the insatiable labour demands of the

colonial tobacco and sugar industries, where their life expectancy was less than two years. Brothels were raided to provide ‘breeders’ for Virginia. Vagrants, vagabonds and convicts were all shipped out of the country to fulfil the greed of the higher classes for profit. Hopeful migrants were duped into signing as indentured servants, to a master for seven years after which they were to be given a plot of land of their own. This promise very rarely materialised for they were worked to death before this time or had their indenture increased unfairly for minor misdemeanours or if they tried to escape and were recaptured. They were unaware they would become chattels who could be bought and sold and even gambled away and paraded for sale like livestock. The conditions aboard the ships that transported these poor wretches were absolutely appalling and many did not even reach their intended destination. They died on board through disease and starvation, and virtually thrown into the sea. Trade ended with American independence from British rule, but the British still tried perpetuating it, many men holding high office and even George III were involved in one of the most audacious plots in Anglo American History. Many of Virginia’s tobacco Planters became the aristocracy of the United States, fuelling this shameful

exploitation of the lower British classes. The richest planter of them all – slave holder and servant holder was to become the first president of the new United States, notably George Washington. Washington’s attitude was put to the test at the beginning of the war, when the British Governor of Virginia promised freedom to servants and slaves who joined his side and fought for King George. The prospect of losing their prime assets enraged the planters, not least Washington. Who described the governor as an ‘arch traitor to the rights of humanity’! It would take thirty years before indentured servant trade disappeared. No principled campaign was fought to end it, as happened with black slavery. Economics killed it. The trade in white servants simply lost its profitability. By 1820, the trade was gone and those who connived at it – some of them great names in America and Britain were remembered for other things.

Imaginary Paella gets Britsh couple throw in Spanish Jail There are few things more enjoyable than settling down for a meal and drinks on the terrace of a restaurant on a balmy Spanish evening. It would hard to imagine that by the end of the meal you would be on your way to a Spanish Jail to enjoy a night in less luxurious accommodation than your hotel. But that is exactly what happened to a British couple on a cycling holiday in Spain. Geoff Cox and his girlfriend Bridget Keyes, from Newdigate in Surrey, found themselves thrown in a Spanish jail and handed a large fine of around ÂŁ600 when they refused to pay for a Paella they didn’t eat. The couple had been enjoying a trip from Cordoba to Granada, and stopped to enjoy some local fare in the latter. But, at the end of the meal, they saw an extra paella, worth â‚Ź15, had been added to the bill. They refused to pay it and all hell broke loose. Mr Cox said: “We pointed this out and

he went off like a firecracker and a row ensued. “We put down â‚Ź105 and said we would pay that, but he wanted â‚Ź120. “It got a bit ugly and when he said he would call the police we said, ‘Right, fine’, because we were certain they would side with us.â€? But when the police arrived, the pair were arrested. They were thrown in separate cells for the night, were fingerprinted, had their shoelaces confiscated, and were given no food or water. The next day they were given access to a lawyer and a translator. Mr Cox said: “I was told I was charged with assault on the police, resisting arrest and defrauding

a restaurant, that these were criminal charges and I could get a year in jail. Plus we were told the police had filed for damages against us. When the case was put before the court

seven hours later the criminal charges were dropped. But the Spanish prosecutor still ensured they had to pay a €78 fine, and damages to the police of €250 each.

“If it gets lost in the system we could find ourselves facing a European extradition warrant, so I’m still worried about it.”

The couple also had to pay €200 to come back to Granada from the next stop on their holiday, Seville, to have attend court two days later. They estimated the incident cost them around €700 in total. This probably wins a place in the Guinness book of World Records as the world’s most expensive Paella that was never made.

Technology sponsored by Apple to Launch iPhone Mini After six years of holding fast to a “one size fits all” iPhone ethos, Apple is reportedly considering offering iPhones in six different colours, with up to 5.7inch screens. Based on interviews with anonymous sources in Apple’s Asia supply chain, Apple is exploring a two-tier iPhone 5S release, including a cheaper model at £63, an incredibly low price, if proven to be true. Apple may be an almost unrecognisable company in 2014

The iPad mini and the iPhone 5, which was the first iPhone to have a larger screen than previous models, were both hints that Apple might eventually diversify its offerings more extensively. The company has been under pressure to prove that it can continue to innovate -- even the radically redesigned iOS 7 hasn’t impressed Wall Street. Coming soon after Tim Cook’s keynote speech at WWDC 2013, the Reuters report suggests that Apple may be an almost unrecognisable company in 2014. Goodbye skeuomorphic apps and one price iPhones; hello flat interfaces in iPhones in a variety of colours. What would Steve Jobs think?

said the technical director of Duratec Bicycles, Milan Duchek. The Flyke has to have a parachute opened at all times in the air

To create the bike, Duratec worked together with two other Czech firms, Technodat and Evektor. Bikes with parachutes It is not the first attempt to make a bicycle fly. In August 2009, an IT teacher John Carver from Oxfordshire constructed what he called the “Flyke” - a flying tricycle - and flew it across the UK, from Lands End to John o’Groats, for charity. Registered with the Civil Aviation Authority, Mr Carver’s machine is powered by a two-stroke twin propeller motor with a paraglider canopy and is equipped with a parachute, always open when the bike is in the air. There have been recent hints that Apple may be moving to the multi screen size model used by other smartphone manufacturers. At the D11 conference in May, CEO Tim Cook said that although the company hadn’t offered different size iPhones in the past, “that doesn’t shut off the future”. Apple could radically increase the size of the iPhone in 2014, says the report, offering models at 4.7 and 5.7 inches. This would take it well into “phablet” territory, with the 5.7 inch version larger than even theSamsung Galaxy Note 2. The report further claims that the iPhone 5S, expected later this year, could come at two price points, with a cheaper plastic model potentially just $99 (£63) and coming in up to six different colours. Testing is expected to begin in July, with production gearing up for a September launch. The premium model would still only be offered in white and black, according to the report. Samsung, one of Apple’s leading competitors, has consistently offered a range of variations on its devices; the 5-inch Galaxy S4 has spawned the S4 Mini, the S4 Zoom and the waterproof S4 Active.

An end to cycle lanes? Researchers in the Czech Republic have unveiled a 95kg (210lb) remotelycontrolled bicycle that can hover a few metres above ground for five minutes.

The bike has to be refuelled about every two hours, is able to carry up to 25.4kg (56lb) of luggage, and can reach a flying speed of about 32km/h (20mph). According to Mr Carver’s website, the device is now for sale.

Carrying a dummy rider, the electric prototype successfully took off, flew around and landed inside an exhibition hall in Prague.

Companies such as Para-Cycle sell similar devices as well, but a huge parachute may prove cumbersome for the city commuter.

The bike is powered by two battery-run propellers on the front, two on the back and one on each side.

And in the early 20th Century, among the very first “flying machines” were bicycles with wings attached to the frame - what became known as aviettes.

The machine could help two-wheeled commuters avoid zigzagging through traffic jams - but it is not quite ready to hit the road - or the air above it - just yet.

They did not really fly, but rather hopped above ground, or glided, having been first powered by fierce pedalling.

The batteries only allow for a few minutes of flight before needing to be re-charged. “Because the capacity of batteries doubles about every 10 years, we can expect that in the future the capacity would be enough for the bike to used for sports, tourism or similar things,”

home, encouraging consolidation of network operators. Right now, Europe has around 100 telecoms operators, which the commission believes is less conducive to a single market for telecoms investment. This fragmentation means that network upgrades come at a slower pace, and there are fears that it will buckle under rapidly-increasing demand. It’s also hoped that a single telecoms market across the 27 member states will mean greater competition, leading to alliances and eventual mergers between telecoms companies operating in different countries.

past across Europe from 2014, after European politicians voted to fasttrack reforms of the European telecoms market. The European Commission -- a group of 27 politicians who represent the best interests of Europe as a whole, rather than individual countries, voted in Brussels to push the reforms through

before the next European elections, which will happen in May 2014. The resulting legislation will come into force on 1 July 2014. Detailed proposals for the changes will be published before the end of July 2013, but it’s been assured that consumers will be able to use their mobile phones across Europe for the same price as they do at

Initially, it’s thought that the move will reduce operator revenues by around two percent, but that telecoms companies will gain in the long term because consumers will be much more inclined to use their devices when they go abroad -particularly to access the internet.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Emergency column this month! There was me, halfway between Murcia and Malaga alone except for the warblings of Eros Ramazzotti, Lady Gaga and Fleetwood Mac ((you can go your own way makes great open road music)when suddenly I realised this column deadline was due and i’d left my Netbook at home. Well, I had been in Spain less than two weeks with extensive travelling , driving from Bilbao then almost immediately to Benidorm with a gal pal (we had sworn like troopers, drank like soldiers and danced like dervishes) And now I was hitting Benalmadena with a friend over from Oz. Argh...what to do? Write it the old way with pen and paper? Find a pigeon? Or hijack a Wifi spot and spend hours writing it into an email with a spongy end pen one letter at a time? If you’re reading this something will have worked. Now I can finally say I’ve ‘done Benidorm´. Two wild days with a bunch of northern cowgirls, brandishing waterpistols, even catching the infamous creature known as Stick Vicky, quite an eye (and bottle) opener. Miss Coco Chanel was somewhat more refined with a more interesting array of costumes. Miss Sticky wore just one, a birthday suit. Suffice to say the new town was awash with Brits on booze sporting themed outfits not always covering the important bits. We saw all sorts from stags to hens and ran the gauntlet of people trying to drag us into bars for a ‘free shot’ closely followed by an inflated price drink. We stayed in the old town, ate fry ups (a necessity following a night of imbibing) had plastic dog poo dumped in our drinks by drag queens and spent ten minutes under water in a ‘submarine’ -a return to my diving days, touching fish, seeing bubbles around me, but this time I was holding my handbag and remembering a specific Benidorm episode. The best discovery was reading that super cool Joanie Collins was filming episodes for the new series. Joan plays Chrystal, hotel bigwig and nemesis of Sheree Hewson. A slagging match made in heaven. Can’t wait to see that.

page 28

Going to have to wait for the Benidorm palace. The first attempt didn’t work out, rats flooded the rain soaked rivers of roads and I was more concerned with saving the car from floating away than crossing the river of no return to book tickets. Still, must be getting to know the place after three visits. Thankfully they seem to run two years apart. Don’t think I could cope with anything sooner! Dawn

Lite summer meals for the warm evenings

Chorizo & tomato salad The combination of sweet, acidic tomatoes with salty, spicy chorizo and tangy Sherry vinegar is a match made in heaven Ingredients 3 ripe beef tomatoes , cut into wedges ½ red onion , thinly sliced few thyme sprigs, leaves picked 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 100g chorizo , sliced on the diagonal Method Put the tomatoes in a bowl with the onion and thyme. Season, then drizzle with the vinegar and oil. Let the flavours mingle while you cook the chorizo. In a hot, dry pan, fry the chorizo slices until browned on both sides. Serve the tomatoes with the fried chorizo, drizzled with a little oil from the pan.

Crisp prosciutto, pea & mozzarella salad with mint vinaigrette

Recipes

Ingredients 4 slices prosciutto (or you could use serrano ham) 100g peas , fresh or frozen 1 ball buffalo mozzarella (approx 125g), torn into large pieces FOR THE VINAIGRETTE juice ½ orange 1 tbsp olive oil small handful mint , leaves finely chopped , plus extra small leaves to serve Method Heat a frying pan. Without adding any oil, fry the prosciutto slices until wrinkled and crisp. Place on a sheet of kitchen roll, leave to cool, break into large shards, then set aside. Boil the peas in a pan of salted water for 2 mins until just tender. Meanwhile, mix all the vinaigrette ingredients together, season, then set aside. If making ahead, do not add the chopped mint until ready to serve, as it will discolour. When the peas are cooked, drain, then run them under cold water until completely cool. Pat dry with kitchen paper. To serve, divide the mozzarella between 2 plates, scatter the peas over and sit the prosciutto shards on top. Drizzle the dressing over and around, and scatter with the mint leaves.

Summer chicken & basil stew

One-pot suppers aren’t just for the colder months. This light, fresh stew just needs crusty bread to mop up the juices Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 8 chicken thighs 1 tbsp plain flour , seasoned 2 red peppers , diced 12 new potatoes , halved 150ml white wine 200ml chicken stock 20g pack basil , leaves only crusty bread , to serve Method Heat the oil in a large, flameproof casserole. Dust the chicken thighs with the seasoned flour and add to the casserole. Cook over a high heat, turning once, until golden all over. Add the peppers and potatoes to the casserole and cook for 3 mins. Pour in the white wine and chicken stock and season with salt and pepper. Cover the casserole and simmer for 20-25 mins or until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the basil and cook for another 5 mins. Serve with some crusty bread.

nothing but love. Everything was love. ‘Oh, my God,’ I thought, ‘I am having a spiritual experience, right here at my father’s funeral!’” The thought struck her as so funny that she giggled—causing something of a commotion in the funeral chapel, as people turned to see what was making her laugh at such an inappropriate moment. Local Yoga teacher Lisa has a studio in Isla Plana and has classes for all abilities.

WHAT IS LOVE? “I know love is there,” my old friend Cindy said. “My question is, why is it that so many times, I can not feel it?” We were in the middle of a session I teach called “Exploring the Heart.” Cindy had recently lost her father, and so I asked her, “Are you talking about something specific?” “Of course,” she said. As she told me the story of her father’s death, I felt a deep sense of recognition. The questions her experience raised are essential ones, questions we all deal with as we probe that most fundamental and yet most difficult of all human feelings: love. Cindy and her father had been polite strangers for nearly 20 years.Yet when her father became seriously ill, the only person he wanted around him was his daughter. “I knew we had been given our big chance to open up to each other,” Cindy said. “I kept thinking, ‘Now he will finally get who I really am! We will bond, and I will be able to feel love for him at last!’” The problem was that Cindy could not find love for her father. She wanted to love him. She knew she should love him. But their lives previously together had formed such a habit of disconnection that she felt nothing at all. So Cindy did the only thing she could think of to close the gap. She asked herself, “How would I act if I did feel love for my father?” Then she acted on her intuition. Cindy realized that when we really love someone, we are attentive to even the smallest unimportant details of that person’s existence. So she practiced paying close attention to her father. She slowed herself down and tried to keep her awareness linked to her father’s breath. She served her father. She took on the emotional crises of the other family members. She did everything, in short, that a devoted daughter would do—and she did it, as best she could, as a discipline, as a practice. Cindy’s father died three months later, and Cindy sat through the funeral dry-eyed, still waiting for her heart to open. During the last hymn, she finally gave up hope. She slumped down in her seat, deeply tired, with no more effort left in her. At that moment, like a small trickle from a dammed up stream, she felt a tenderness in her heart. It was soft and subtle, as it came in. It was the love she had been trying to feel. “It felt as if I had tapped into some kind of big, loving energy,” she told me. “It did not exclude my father, but it definitely was not about him. Instead, the feeling I had in that moment was that there was

page 34

“I wondered where that love came from,” she told me. “Was it a reward for taking care of my father? If so, why was it not there when I needed it, so to speak?” I realised that behind Cindy’s question was an even deeper set of questions, ones that plague us all. They go something like this: If love is real, why doesn’t it feel the way I have always heard it was supposed to feel? Why can I not feel it all the time? And why does love so often feel lacking, or painful, or both? Love Is a Many-Levelled Thing Most of us have been confused about love all of our lives. In fact, we often begin life as a search—conscious or unconscious—for a source of love that can not be taken away. We may have grown up feeling unloved or believing we had to perform feats to deserve love. Our parents, the movies we see, our cultural and religious environments give us ideas about love that go on influencing us long after we have forgotten their source. When we read spiritual books and encounter teachers, our understanding about love can get even more complicated, because depending on what we read or whom we study with, we get slightly different takes on what love means in spiritual life. Some teachers tell us that our essence is love; others say love is a passion, an emotion that leads to addiction and clinging. If we are on a devotional path like bhakti yoga, we are often taught that the way to enlightenment is to fall in love with God and let that love grow until it engulfs us and we become one with the Beloved.

always there, always available, the flow of love towards you never slows or stops. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine you are sitting in the centre of a vast flow of love. Imagine that love is flowing toward you like water or passing into you like a gentle wind. Whether you actually feel this love or not, keep imagining that it is flowing toward you and into you. Another way to receive love is to imagine that just outside the window of your room sits a compassionate and loving being, someone wise and incredibly forgiving. This person is watching you through the window; her glance protects you and surrounds you with sweetness. Allow yourself to receive the love that is flowing toward you from this being. If thoughts come up to block it—like “I do not deserve this” or “This is just an exercise; it is not real”—notice them and let them go as you might in meditation, saying, “Thinking,” and then breathing the thought out.Your only task is to receive. When you open your eyes, look around you with the thought that the love you have been contemplating is still flowing toward you from whatever you see and from the air itself. In truth, it is. The Great Love, the love that is the seed of everything, is present in everything, peeking out during every moment in which we feel a spark of tenderness, appreciation, or affection. Any glimmer of love is a spark from that fire and will always lead us back to it. Always feel happy with yourselves, feel sure that others are too. Know that you want to love and to be loved. lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es

We are soon left to wonder where the truth lies in all of this. When spiritual teachers use the word love, what kind of love are they talking about? Is eros (romantic or sexual love) really different from agape, the socalled unconditional or spiritual love? Is devotional love the same as compassion, or love for humanity? Is love something we have to feel, or is it enough to offer kindness and direct positive thoughts toward ourselves and others? Connecting to the Source of Love Remember love is

Health &Wellbeing DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAY FEVER IS?? Hay fever is an allergic reaction to grasspollen, which comes from flowering shrubs and trees. With good weather and spring, pollen is in the air and hay fever arrives. Red, watery eyes, mucus, sneezing ...these are some of the annoying and unpleasant symptoms that accompany hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, which suffers one in every six people. But these symptoms are only an alert and, if we react in time, we can evenprevent them. THE POLLEN CALENDAR Hay fever has always been historically linked to the hay making, in June. However, these beliefs are not valid, as pollen can be found in the air from February to October. Currently, the pollen season is expanding because of the temperatures, that are more humid and high and cause the “explosion” of plants like ragweed, which grows enormously, even in the backyards. Several species of ragweed produce large amounts of pollen (very aggressive), which can cause violent allergic reaction. If you are allergic to tree pollen, you will suffer the discomfort mainly in spring (February, March and April). if the allergy is to grass pollen, then you will have trouble at the end of the season (June, July). But it is also possible to suffer the symptoms during the entire season. Everyone is different, and if you are aware that you are at risk, you should control the pollen calendar to see flowering periods and take the appropriate measures. IS THERE A CURE? Hay fever is really annoying, but not severe. However, it is possible that prolonged symptoms may damage the nasal mucosa. Unfortunately, there is no cure for hay fever, but you can take measures to prevent or reduce your symptoms. GUIDELINES FOR POLLEN AND

ALLERGY CONTROL The best thing to do in front of an allergy is to avoid the substance to which you are allergic. But, in the case of hay fever, it is more complicated, because there is pollen everywhere. So, what you can do is to keep track of pollen as far as possible: At home: -Maintain humidity between 40% and 60%, to keep the nasal mucosa humid. -Keep all doors and windows tightly closed during strong wind days. -Air the environments preferably early in the morning, when the outside is still humid. -Against pollen place screens on windows and doors. -Try not to dry clothes outside, since the clothes and especially the bed ones can trap pollen. Outside: -Use sunglasses to protect youreyes from pollen. -Keep the car windows and all the air drivers closed. -Opt for a holiday at the sea or in high mountain areas where pollen concentration is much lower. -Go hiking or exercising in the early morning or after the rain, when the concentration of pollen in the air is lower. -If you take a coffee on a terrace, keep in mind that the pollen in the air of the city is three to five times lower than in the field. -Be aware of the pollen calendar. -Avoid foods that can trigger an allergic

reaction or strengthen it, like pineapple, fresh meat and eggs. Many people who suffer from hay fever are allergic to nuts, bananas, apples, grapes and peaches. This is all for now. If you have any question about hay fever, don´t doubt it and ask to Camposol pharmacy team. ByJose Luis Martinez-Lozano Martínez (pharmacist).

the final home game against Beniajan CF ended in a resounding 5-0 victory with leading scorer Jose Ruben grabbing a hat trick.

Ciudad de Murcia fans

Although a final mid-table position of ninth may sound somewhat disappointing it was a great improvement on the situation at the start of the season when only two points were gained from the first six games. In Jose Ruben and Cecilio, Mazarron at last had two capable strikers, Ruben’s 19 goals making him the second highest goalscorer in the league and Cecilio also chipping in with 12 goals.

This month we are able to report on two matches, as an extra game was put on the calendar to try a course we have not played for some time. The first of them was at Altorreal on the 22nd May. Dan Rust

much improved since the course has been under new management. The day started under skies which promised a severe dose of liquid sunshine, but as we know things can change quite quickly here in Spain, and sure enough it did. The sun came out and the clouds disappeared which left us with a perfect day for golf.

Dave Bennett

A large number of the members turned out for this course, and what a pleasure it is to play there. The course was in excellent condition with good fairways, and very slick greens. As the day went on the wind increased in strength, but at the end the consensus was that it had been a good day for all.

As usual Stapleford rules applied, and when we returned to the 19th hole for a little refreshment, the winner of the match was Dan Rust (in photo) with a score of 35 points. He was followed home by Mike Harrison, 34 points, - joint 3rd Nigel Chadderton & Don Busby, 33 points, - 5th Paul Allsop, 32 pts, - 6th Howard Lee, 31 pts.

The defence also looked strong in the second half of the season with captain Diego and goalkeeper Jose Iker always turning in sound performances. Mazarron’s playing record for the season was P32 W12 D9 L11 F 61 A 44 Pts 45. Although the turnaround of players at this level at the end of each season is quite remarkable, it is hoped that the obvious happy dressing room spirit and the continued loyal support of Los Amigos will persuade many of the players to stay with the Club next season. If so, there could be exciting times ahead. Saturday 8th June saw history being made with the visit of English Eastern Counties Premier Division team, Holbrook Sports to Spain for a friendly

half time to fight back to 2-2 and also missed a penalty before Holbrook scored in the 90th minute to earn a narrow 3-2 victory. The game, which was sponsored by Dave Chapman of the Costa Cafe, Camposol, was an exciting spectacle and played in an excellent spirit. Later that evening players from both teams attended the Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Player of the Year Awards function at Mariano’s, Camposol. Presentations were made to both teams in addition to the annual Mazarron Player of the Year Trophies and a chicken and chips supper was followed by music and dancing to the excellent local band “Backwater”. The Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Player of the Year was Diego who became the first Mazarron player to receive this award in successive years. Diego had previously announced that he was retiring as a player at the end of the season and received a standing ovation from the crowd at the last home league

Later that week, a brave group of Los Amigos members took part in the first Los Amigos de Mazarron Go Kart competition at the karting centre in Puerto de Mazarron. The karts reach speeds of around 70km so it is certainly not an event for the faint hearted. After a series of elimination rounds the final was contested by Dave Marks, Chris Marchant, Dave Perks and Nicola Perks. The eventual winner was Dave Marks who claimed that he had never been in a kart before, something which the other competitors found hard to believe!!! Dave was presented with the winner’s trophy and everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience which was rounded off with a meal and a few (!!!) drinks at Viggos, Puerto de Mazarron. It is hoped to hold a similar event in September so don’t miss out next time!!

GM considers moving Opel Mokka production to Spain from Korea General Motors Co. is considering moving a large share of the current production of the Opel Mokka subcompact crossover from South Korea to Spain, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported, citing sources within the U.S. carmaker. Opel, which is a GM subsidiary, has already said it will build the nextgeneration Mokka in Europe and not in Korea. More than 100,000 Mokkas have been ordered since the European market launch in October and demand has been much better than expected, leading to production bottlenecks and long waiting lists for the model. Producing the Mokka in Opel’s plant in Zaragoza would help to fill up that plant’s spare capacity and could lower losses at the division. The plant currently produces the Corsa subcompact and Meriva small minivan models. A spokesman for Opel said on Monday that GM was looking for additional capacity to produce subcompact SUVs but declined to comment specifically on any plans to move production of the Mokka to the factory in Spain. A spokesman for Opel’s sibling brand Chevrolet added that there were no plans currently to move production of the Trax, a sister of the Mokka, from Korea.

In March, Opel said it was reviewing whether other models may be built in Europe and Korea, including the Koreamade Antara medium SUV and Europemade Agila small minivan, but added

The workers represent a tiny fraction of Spain’s 3.5 million unemployed under25-year-olds, but BMW’s Caina-Andree said the program could be expanded to Italy or Greece. “We want to give something back to these countries, in which we sell our cars,” Caina-Andree, who joined BMW’s management board last year, told the paper on Wednesday. Her comments come after German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned that failure to beat youth unemployment could tear Europe apart, and dropping the continent’s welfare model in favor of tougher U.S. standards would spark a revolution.

that no decisions on production locations have been made yet. The Mokka is one of a number of new products including the Cascada mid-size convertible that Opel hopes will help attract customers and help end chronic financial losses.

BMW will recruit trainees from Spain’s pool of young jobless BMW is recruiting a small number of unemployed young Spaniards to work in Germany in a program to “give something back” to its customer countries. Twenty-five workers aged 18 to 25 will be trained for a year at the carmaker’s headquarters in Munich, BMW personnel chief Milagros Caina-Andree told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “They should be immersed in German culture, possibly live with a BMW host family and work in development, sales,

Germany, along with France, Spain and Italy, have backed urgent action to help a generation of young Europeans who fear they will not find jobs, with youth unemployment in the EU standing at nearly one in four, more than twice the adult rate. More than half of Spaniards and Greeks under the age of 25 are unemployed, compared with fewer than 8 percent of Germans from the same age group. German officials fear Chancellor Angela Merkel, who faces an election in September, could be blamed if a hot summer in recession-mired southern Europe leads to an explosion of social unrest. German labour shortage Germany is also keen to tap unemployed youth abroad because it needs to attract foreign workers to make up for shortages in some professions and sectors at home. Chemicals giant BASF has launched a project to train about 20 young people in Spain, with the aim of employing them at its headquarters in Ludwigshafen to secure a supply of skilled technical staff, a company spokeswoman said on Wednesday. Similarly, the world’s biggest business software maker SAP aims to recruit university graduates from southern Europe via a program it launched jointly with other German technology companies in March. Last year, 33,000 posts for job training remained unfilled in Germany, and young workers from recession-hit parts of the euro zone could help fill that gap.

Spanish efforts Spain is making its own efforts to employ its youth. It launched a four-year plan offering incentives to companies that hire people under 30, and the Labor Ministry says it has led to 30,000 new training contracts for youths so far this year, up 73 percent from a year ago. Among the companies that have joined the plan are bank BBVA and power utility Iberdrola. Oil major Repsol, with a new PR campaign trumpeting its recruitment and training programs, said it has created 3,500 jobs for youths in Spain in the past five years, while telephone giant Telefonica has several scholarship programs to cultivate young talent and provide jobs in the company’s Spanish business, despite a 2011 plan to lay off 6,500 workers in its home market over three years.

cars -- there’s nothing left! This must be a sign from Him that we should be friends and not try to pin the blame on each other.” The man replies, “Oh yes, I agree with you completely.” The woman points to a bottle on the ground and says, “Somehow this bottle of Scotch from my back seat didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this Scotch and celebrate our good fortune.” She hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it, and chugs about a third of the bottle to calm his nerves. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?” The woman replies, “No. I think I’ll just wait for the police.”

Property, Financial and Legal A LESSON FOR US ALL!! You will often have heard the saying “If it looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is”. In Spain during the current property slump, there are certainly deals to be done and offers that would have been laughed at a few years back will now be seriously entertained. It’s true that every week new schemes come along that are designed to try and oil the wheels of the Spanish property market, and these are to be welcomed if they help a sale over the finishing line. Sometimes a deal comes along that looks to good to be true – and guess what? It is! Many of you will know Angela South, the UK authorised financial adviser who works with me. Angela told me of a client who was told of a showhome that “had to be sold” and the developer was ready to hand it over at two thirds of its original advertised price on a mortgage repayment schedule that had to be seen to be believed. It came with its own pool and was in an area that they were certainly considering

life savings are precious – and if that statement seems self-evident, I apologise if it seems I am overstating the obvious. Take care when making decisions and signing paperwork that can materially affect your retirement years. Have you fully understood what you are signing? Do you really know what the costs are? Are the terms, costs and implications laid out in a transparent fashion or do you have to dig deep to find the facts for yourself. IF IN DOUBT, ASK SOMEONE WHO KNOWS! Sometimes people are reluctant to take professional advice. Sometimes they want to believe what the salesman has told them, because it fits their picture of how they want the world to be. Buying in Spain, Use Currencies Direct to Save Thousands There’s a good reason why hundreds of thousands of foreigners ownproperty in Spain – the great weather, glorious coastline, wonderful food and relaxed, friendly people make it an ideal location to purchase a home whether for holidays or a more permanent move. Ranging from sleek, modern apartments on the seafront to farmhouses out in

the country there is a huge variety of properties to choose from. When looking for a property to purchase often the last thing on your mind will be the international transfers required to pay the deposit and the balance of the property price. We recommend you use the services of an international payments specialist such as Currencies Direct to guide you through the process. Your high street bank with a huge range of different services on offer simply doesn’t have the expertise to make the international transfer happen as smoothly as possible. They are also not able to remove international payment processing fees and receiving fees at Spanish banks.

Property, Financial and Legal Choosing to use a specialist provider of international transfer services is the best way to ensure that your money can be moved from one country to another with ease. They will talk you through the process and advise you on the best way to manage any step payments to be made. Well-established foreign exchange payment company Currencies Direct has four offices in Spain so you can sit down face-to-face with someone who really knows the system while you’re over there looking at properties. As well as providing expertise and assistance your specialist provider can also save you money on the exchange rate and on fees. Currencies Direct find that many of their clients save as much as 3%+ on the price of a property simply by using their services rather than a high street bank. On a property of €250k that represents a saving of c€7500! Not to mention the additional savings because Currencies Direct don’t charge

you any fees when you’re making your property purchase transfers and they can guarantee no receiving fees at any Spanish bank. Buying in Spain is a great decision – just make sure you’re able to maximise on your home currency by calling on the currency experts. PALS EVENTS 2013 Flaming June arrived, and with it the opening of our brand new shop in Mazarrón town!! It has been all hands to the pump to get it ready for our adoring public, but eventually we opened the doors for real on Wednesday 12th June, to be greeted by hordes of bargain hunters - just like the Harrods sale really, only our merchandise is MUCH better!! We have a large selection of ladies and men’s clothes, some baby and tots clothes, but very little in the way of teenager’s clothes, so if you have anything hanging around we would be happy to take it and anything else you may have off your hands! We also have some lovely furniture, bedding, books, DVDs, CDs and bric-a-brac, all at knock-down prices. Come along and have a browse we are situated directly opposite the Centro de Salud on the main road through Mazarron town, and have lots of yellow and black signs outside - we’re unmissable really! We’re also looking for volunteers to give us just four hours a week or a fortnight in either of our shops (Fuente Alamo or Mazarron); why not come and join our friendly team, meet new people and help the animals, all at no charge! Can’t think of a better deal, can you? In other news…Charlie-boy is now at home with his new pals, his bandages are off and he is learning to walk without the encumbrance of those awful overgrown hooves. His life should be so much better from now on, although he is in a bit of pain at the moment from the operations. He is suffering a bit from all the flies this years (who isn’t?!) so we are buying him a fly-screen outfit to help. Having his fur shaved off has made it quite uncomfortable for him, poor chap! He is putting on weight anyway, and making lots of new friends. He is such a darling! Unfortunately, all bar one of the partridge chicks did not make it, despite our volunteer’s best efforts. They were just too young to be away from mum…Fly free little ones xxx The fox is back at her home with her family, so a very happy outcome there! One of the four new teeny tiny pups that arrived last month has already been reserved - ‘Miss Mee Mee’ - and such a cutie she is too!! Her three brothers are just waiting to melt your heart…

To remind you we are at SaraLaras on a Wednesday afternoon 1 till 3 or Saturday morning at the Trevi from 11 till 1.30 or call me on 626 460 465.

FUTURE EVENTS

Toby is also ready for his new home, he will be going soon. He’s really ‘grown up’ now, but will always be Andrea’s baby heehee! One night on the way home from the Mazarron shop we picked up this little cutie, Danny, a very young Podenco. He is gorgeous, and, unusually, he has green eyes! He is currently being cared for by Paradise Kennels in Benferri, as we are completely full up with dogs and pups at the moment! Thank you Paradise Kennels!!! Please contact Andrea on 690-906-565 for adoptions or voluntary work, or if you have any large items that you would like us to take off you. Donations as always gratefully accepted, both in the shop in Fuente Alamo, and via PayPal to andreasanimalrescuemurcia@hotmail. com. Also please join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/ Andreas-Animal-Rescue-The-Henrietta-Foundation/ Thanks for reading! Andrea

WHO SAID FOOTBALLERS AREN’T INTELLIGENT AND WORTH £400,000 PER WEEK? “My parents have always been there for me, ever since I was about 7. “ David Beckham “I would not be bothered if we lost every game as long as we won the league.” Mark Viduka “Alex Ferguson is the best manager I’ve ever had at this level. Well, he’s the only manager I’ve actually had at this level. But he’s the best manager I’ve ever had.” David Beckham “If you don’t believe you can win, there is no point in getting out of bed at the end of the day.” Neville Southall “I’ve had 14 bookings this season - 8 of which were my fault, but 7 of which were disputable.” Paul Gascoigne “I’ve never wanted to leave. I’m here for the rest of my life, and hopefully after that as well.” Alan Shearer “I’d like to play for an Italian club, like Barcelona “ Mark Draper “You’ve got to believe that you’re going to win, and I believe we’ll win the World Cup until the final whistle blows and we’re knocked out.” Peter Shilton “I faxed a transfer request to the club at the beginning of the week, but let me state that I don’t want to leave Leicester.” Stan Collymore “I was watching the Blackburn game on TV on Sunday when it flashed on the screen that George (Ndah) had scored in the first minute at Birmingham . My first reaction was to ring him up. Then I remembered he was out there playing.” Ade Akinbiyi

“Without being too harsh on David Beckham, he cost us the match.” Ian Wright “I’m as happy as I can be - but I have been happier.” Ugo Ehiogu “ Leeds is a great club and it’s been my home for years, even though I live in Middlesbrough.” Jonathan Woodgate “I can see the carrot at the end of the tunnel.” Stuart Pearce “I took a whack on my left ankle, but something told me it was my right.” Lee Hendrie “I couldn’t settle in Italy - it was like living in a foreign country.” Ian Rush “Germany are a very difficult team to play...they had 11 internationals out there today.” Steve Lomas “I always used to put my right boot on first, and then obviously my right sock.” Barry Venison “I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don’t know into what religion yet.” David Beckham “The Brazilians were South American, and the Ukrainians will be more European.” Phil Neville “All that remains is for a few dots and commas to be crossed.” Mitchell Thomas “One accusation you can’t throw at me is that I’ve always done my best.” Alan Shearer “I’d rather play in front of a full house than an empty crowd.” Johnny Giles “Sometimes in football you have to score goals.” Thierry Henry

Q: What’s dangerous and swings from trees? A: A monkey with a chainsaw. A string walks into a bar with a few friends and orders a beer. The bartender says, “I’m sorry, but we don’t serve strings here.” The string goes back to his table. He ties himself in a loop and messes up the top of his hair. He walks back up to the bar and orders a beer. The bartender squints at him and says, “Hey, aren’t you a string?” The string says, “Nope, I’m a frayed knot.” A guy walks into a bar, orders 12 brandy’s and starts drinking them as fast as he can. The bartender asks, “Wow, why are you drinking so fast?” The guy says, “You would be drinking fast, too, if you had what I had.” The bartender asks, “What do you have?” The guy says, “75 cents.” A man walks into a bar with a pork pie on his head. The barman asks, “Why are you wearing a pork pie on your head?” The man replies, “It’s a family tradition. We always wear pork pies on our heads on Tuesday.” The barman remarks, “But it’s Wednesday.” Sheepishly, the man says, “Man, I must look like a real fool.”
