JOURNAL
THE
Greetings Dear Reader, Welcome to June! And what a month it is lined up to be. There is a lot going on, with the Queens Jubilee, the 3rd Camposol Fiesta, the 2012 European Cup and lots more! The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that this month our logo is different, with our name shortened to simply “The Journal” There are a number of reasons for this, not least that the old name was quite a mouthful. The main reason that we have made the change is that due to our ongoing success we have really outgrown the “Camposol” part of our name. Over the last 6 months we have gone from strength to strength experiencing phenomenal growth. We have welcomed lots of new advertisers, created a new look for the magazine and most importantly we have increased the number of copies we print and the areas in which we distribute them. We have embraced the internet and now share the magazine with thousands more people each month both here in Spain and in the UK via our e-mailing list, our Facebook page and our website. As our business and readership continue to grow, I feel it is incumbent upon me make the magazine relevant to all who read it and not just those who live on Camposol. But let’s be clear before any rumours start. (Rumours you say? On this urbanisation? Perish the thought!) Everything about the magazine remains the same. The only change is that our name is shorter. Our offices and main distribution point remain here on Camposol, but now we are proud to reach far and wide throughout the region. Getting to this point has not been easy and would like to give a massive thanks to our readers and advertisers for their ongoing support, especially during the last 6 months, and helping to make us the most read news magazine on the Costa Calida. Enjoy the magazine, enjoy the sunshine, and enjoy the Fiesta. See you next month, Robert Rutherford
Mayor Signs Papers on Camposol. Mayor Gines Campillo signed the papers recognizing Camposol on Thursday 10th May 2012. He indicated that it was a start, not a finish, and that there was a lot more to do. He was not going to make a great deal of the event as a result. The CRA are meeting him on on the 5th June and Pepe Gomez attended their meeting on the 16th may. The mayor is right, there is still a lot to do even on Sector A. But this marks a real breakthrough. It means the paperwork for individual villas can be issued and finish, making them legal. It has taken the coalition less than a year to reach this point. When they were installed in power, it was apparent they thought it would take less. However the bad blood alone between MASA and the Town Hall must have made negotiations difficult. Where to next? Issuing all relevant licences, Certificates of Habitacion, will be a start! However it also appears that the contract between Aqualia and MASA on B,C and D has broken down. The Town Hall will inevitably have to spend much time on this. It appears that water bills for May have not been collected! Meanwhile on Sector A the former Homeowenrs committee plans to turn itself into a duly constituted Neighbours Association, a Residents association for Sector A. Given that there were only some 24 at their last meeting this may prove more difficult than first seems.

BRITISH EMBASSY WEBSITE AND HEALTHCARE ADVICE IN SPAIN
Press Release / 2012-04-17 06:46:33
The British Government does not condone or encourage “health tourism”. The aim of the advice provided by the British Embassy is to ensure that British nationals in Spain, whether tourists or residents, comply fully with Spanish and EU legislation in exercising both their rights and their obligations. Spain receives over 13 million British visitors every year. It is in the clear interest of both the UK and Spain that these visitors know how to access the Spanish healthcare system correctly in case of need. This prevents unnecessary administrative cost and ensures that the UK can reimburse Spain accurately and efficiently in line with the specific provisions set out in EU legislation. Our website advice makes clear that the European Health Insurance Card does not cover those who come to Spain for
the specific purpose of health treatment. There are also many British nationals resident in Spain. They are entitled to access the Spanish healthcare system, just as Spanish nationals resident in the UK are entitled to access the British healthcare system. The aim of our advice is to ensure that they do so in full compliance with Spanish legislation, including registration on the “Padron”. The British and Spanish Governments cooperate very closely on healthcare and other issues related to British nationals in Spain. There is a joint commitment to ensure that British nationals, either residing or visiting Spain, are accessing the Spanish healthcare system correctly. British visitors make up approximately 24% of the total number of tourists visiting Spain. The UK contribution to the Spanish tourism industry is of the order of €10bn annually, approximately 1% of Spain’s GDP. The British Government is committed to ensuring that this important bilateral relationship is underpinned by correct, legal and efficient access to healthcare in line with EU legislation.

Cats on A under new management
You will remember Sara from the kitchen of the Saladillo Vista where she worked for years, especially her fish and chips. Since it closed she has spent her time at Cats, and now she and her partner, Sean, who plan to marry in September have taken over Cats. Cats on Sector A is one of Camposol oldest bars. Mike and Marilyn who ran the bar with daughter Cat developed the bar as a venue and eating place. Karaoke on a Thursday will be staying with Berni Mac, as will the popular bingo night on a Friday. Friends and Buddies have used the bar for their events monthly for years as have the two slimming clubs. If you don’t know it, its a long cool bar, with plenty of seating outside on the terrace. Its deceptive inside because at the back of the bar is an events room, used for private parties and ladies darts amongst other things.
Welcome from Sara & Sean Who have taken over Cats.

My Best Day by Mia Stokes The dance school that I go to is called ‘Murcia Dance’ and my teacher is called Louise Bremner. Back in March Louise told us that we were going to do a dance competition and I felt really excited. The competition was the ‘Costa Blanca Performing Arts Festival’. On a Monday in March I went to dance and Louise played us the music and showed us the dance. We all felt really excited and loved the music, it was called ‘Boogie Wonderland’ from the film ‘Happy Feet’.
and orange like a penguin! We looked brilliant. On Sunday 29th April 2012 I had to wake up really early because it was finally the day of the competition and we had to be at Kings College, Roldan for 9.30am, but I didn’t mind because I was so excited. When I arrived there were lots more dance schools and dancers and that made me feel even more nervous. We were dancing at 1.35pm, after lunch, so I spent the morning watching other dancers who were really good.
Kian, Mia, Holly and Amelia
When we were learning the dance, it was hard at first as some of the steps were really fast but with more practice it got easier. We started having extra rehearsals on a Saturday because it was getting nearer to the dance competition and we wanted it to be perfect. My friend, Holly, came around to my house to practice aswell and we had really good fun together. As a group we talked about what costumes would be good to wear. Our tshirt had penguins on saying ‘Happy Feet’ and my baseball cap also said ‘Happy Feet’. My trousers and shoes were black and my socks were orange, The whole costume was black, white
When it was my turn to dance I felt really, really nervous, scared and excited. When we went on the stage all the judges smiled at us, the music started and then we just danced as best as we could, I think we performed really good. We came off the stage and I was so happy! We then had to wait for ages to find out the results and guess what.....we won!!!!! The four of us in my dance got a gold medal but we also won a trophy for the ‘Best Junior Dance Troupe’ so it was brilliant. The other Murcia Dance dancers got medals too so we all had an amazing day. When I went to bed that night I was sad because the day had finished and I wanted to do it all again.....it had been my best and most favourite day in a long, long time!!! Mia Stokes

Just do not yet collect data form local police. In this context, there were in 2011, 2,283,514 reported crimes, which involves a crime rate of 48.4 percent, half a point below the 2010 data, when it came to 48.9 percent. Also lower murder and robbery More specifically, voluntary manslaughter and murder accomplished have fallen by 3.5%, down from 401 in 2010 to 387 last year. This index of 0.90 is also below the last European average in 2009 was at 1.22, and far from countries such as Finland and Ireland (2.18 and 2.07, respectively). Also, while robberies rose by 3.9%, the rest of robberies fell by 4.8%, pulls in public (8.7%), the robberies in homes (9.7% ) and vehicle theft (9.9%). The “bad” Spanish health system management
Numerous bureaucratic and administrative failures cause millions in losses The Spanish healthcare system is plagued by administrative failures

that cause millions in losses, mainly due to mismanagement made by the administration of health care to foreigners. This follows a report by the Court to supervise after 2009 has identified numerous bureaucratic and administrative failures of those responsible to both the NHS and to the regions. The lack of rate increases, health cards granted to foreign citizens who were ineligible, duplication of cards, lack of computerization, the assumption of payments that are not theirs or the abandonment at the time of billing for health services countries of origin of patients, are major irregularities in the Spanish health system. A major “hole” in the turnover of pharmaceutical benefits to foreign concept for which in 2009 were billed 1,452,207.73 euros for the assistance provided in primary care. After inspecting this service, the Court found that the health services of the autonomous communities fail to check in on average 45% of the cost of pharmaceutical benefits served to these claims by 37 countries, representing a loss of at least 4.5 million euros in one year. The bill also regional administrations, according to the Court, the benefits that offer emergency services to policyholders in other countries. In this case, the billing done by state government amounted to at least 3.55 million euros in a year. Another of the “holes” on the Spanish health

collect many of the bills in their countries of origin. Another anomaly relates to aliens entitled to health care for lack of sufficient financial resources. This case has shown that the 453,349 foreigners in this situation, 2,586 were in turn holding a Spanish Health Card (EHIC) issued by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). Fraud, he explains, is because foreign card is valid for 90 days compared with two years of the TSE, a period which, in addition, they can return to their countries and receive care there under Spain. system lost money is the public pricing applying to health care to foreigners. According to the Court, the failure to update the same causes, in most cases, failure to cover costs costs of benefits provided to foreign patients. The Court has also found “inconsistencies” in the database of most areas in respect to foreign citizens from countries where Community regulations apply. In his report also claims that the databases of foreign patients are incomplete, making it impossible to

system. The Court additionally complains that most of the databases on the field of nationality “were empty” and also included the expiration date of the card, or the date of discharge, which provides that a significant number foreign citizens continue to use expired cards. According to the report, the health services of the autonomous communities issued in 2009, 1,112,085 individual health cards to foreigners from countries of the European Economic Area and Switzerland. However, 59,088 of these foreigners, are listed in the database as having no right to healthcare. In this case, warns of the added difficulty of knowing which regions such cards issued. It also warns of over one hundred foreigners who have health insurance card in his country and the Spanish individual health insurance card, two incompatible documents. In addition, most health facilities accorded to foreign Spanish health card temporary treatments that are not urgent and can be postponed until the return to their countries as Mechano, massage therapy, exercise therapy or thermotherapy, among others. These treatments cost thousands of euros, on the other hand, according to the regulatory agency, never billed or charged to the affected countries. All of this bears out the British Ambassadors contention that it is not British ex-pats who are the problem.

Iberian plans start from €2995.00 with nothing else to pay Please read the below translation from our Funeral Director confirming that we can use the local Tanatorio in Mazarron: Good day susan, in answer to your question about Mazarron, “Can we do a service there” the answer is yes, we do services in Mazarron as in the rest of the peninsula.Where the situation occurs that we do not have our own installations as in Mazarron, we collaborate with local funeral directors, especially if our local offices or tanatoriums are of great distance. We would then work with them to provide the service requested.Having said the above, our personal advisors would advise the family and offer options about most convenient location to provide the plan cover with SPN/IFP and cause as little inconvenience as possible, if the family want’s to use the local funeral directors premesis- in this case the Tanatorio in Mazarron then we are able to use these facilities, and we would liase with the family in each specific case. PALS on the Beach
Mayday saw what has become the first of PALS twice yearly expeditions to Bolnuevo beach for a picnic/BBQ. Being a beautiful day, the first for a few days, and an annual holiday, the beach was pretty full, lots of families enjoying the day. It’s got a simple format, arrive about 1PM, set up tables and chairs, sit and have a sangria or other drink, buy a raffle ticket, sit and talk or sun bathe. The energetic can get up and play pelanque, an afternoon competition. At 2PM the food is served, delicious potato salad and coleslaw along with a finely chopped salad; topped off with BBQ sausages and

sea for the specially hardy since it is not too warm yet, or a go at the tombola while waiting for the raffle, whose prizes are always worth the wait. PALS have got the format just right and it’s a very nice way to spend a bank holiday. This year PALS have got another beach do on the 29th June, with a final one on the 12th October. Their cruise is on October 20th and takes in Malta, Sicily, Naples, Sardinia and Palma. You can meet them and get tickets at the Trevi on Sector B Camposol on a Saturday morning between 11AM and 1PM

Camposol Residents Association
Following last year’s Mazarron council elections the new administration raised the hopes of Camposol residents and owners by undertaking to join with developer Masa in bringing about the completion and adoption of the estate. However after some initial movement towards achieving that aim any further progress has now seemingly stalled. Despite the councils stated intention of ignoring the need to complete Sector A by abandoning the process of first bringing the road surfacing up to standard, the process of adoption which had been promised for February, has still not happened and a Council representative at Camposols Citizen Participation Council meeting held in March stated that the process is now awaiting the agreement of Iberdrola regarding both the quality of street-lights and the installation of meters. There were also claims at the time that electricians were working on Sector B but it must be said that there is little evidence that any such presence was nothing more
than minimal and short lived. Also there are doubts as to whether the stated intention for technicians from the Town to evaluate the needs and costs associated with the area’s infrastructure has yet occurred. It was stated that some legal and technical problems in the adoption of Camposol were being experienced but how much of the lack of progress can be attributed to financial issues associated with the developer’s claimed absence of liquidity? If Masa has no money then any costs will have to be paid from either the performance bonds/ guarantees or council coffers and surly this situation puts into question the practicalities and benefits of the developer’s involvement at all. A number of Optimistic forecasts were made by Councillor José Gómez at the meeting regarding various property documents that until now have been denied to property owners. It was stated that it is hoped that Habitation Certificates will be issued be for all Sector A properties in April or May and for the remaining sectors by the end of September. It was also maintained that the Modification of the Plan General will take place this year and that if there is no more bad news, all houses will have deeds before the end of 2012. Also councillor Gómez has said that when the Plan General is amended, by allocating enough undeveloped land to Turistico will allow that now categorized under that heading to be changed to that of residential. For much of this to happen will hinge on a number of procedures connected with both resolving the rambla problem on Sector D together with subsequent planning revisions being implemented. When questioned the council
representatives confirmed that this will be done before the end of 2012. It was further maintained that it will not be the residents; it would be the either Masa, the council or some other public administration that would bear the cost of complying with the Confederación Hidrográfica’s requirements. Despite much discussion surrounding the costs and the available finances associated with the completion of Camposol, there is still much confusion and uncertainty. The required figure indicated by the previous administration of sixteen million euros has been dismissed by Councillor David Fernández as the unreliable words of the former Mayor or his team and Councillor Gómez declared that the three million three hundred and sixty thousand euros that is now claimed to be obtainable, will be adequate. When bearing in mind that as well as a need for a substantial amount work to the street lighting system, a total of over four hundred and sixty thousand square meters of road surfacing on sectors B, C & D is requiring a considerable amount of repair, replacement or upgrading there must be some doubts whether acceptable standards can realistically be achieved within these financial limitations. Out & About
with Rod Sawyer Our Best friend has arrived for her Spring visit, a refugee from a cold and very wet England. Visitors do make us think, where to go and what to do. Arriving on the noon plane, we decided that a visit and light lunch in the port of Cartagena was called for; the car was parked in the underground car park on the front, an ideal place to park, and we wandered about. She was most impressed by the oldest submarine, parked as an exhibit on the Paseo. “it looks like a torpedo, how do they get into it and how many crew were there?” Questions not to be answered at the time! There were two huge cruise ships in, dominating the harbour sky line. It’s only when you see them in Harbour that you realize just how big they are, Wanderer of the Seas was there from the USA having crossed the Atlantic on the start of a world wide cruise. This was found out from four Americans on the cruise ship who had dropped by Burger King for a much need burger. “Where’s the McDonalds” they asked us. A careful explanation of the restriction of that fast food outlet to the Eroski supermarket stunned them. Spain it appeared had fewer fast food outlets than Russia! “Ha but tapas still rules in Spain. Virtually
page 18
every small café is a fast food outlet, all very cheap with plenty of choice of small dishes which are always accompanied by bread.” We explained. The front is lovely now, with the opportunity to do a harbour trip, a shorter or longer one. The cruise ships have made an amazing difference; thousands must have been deposited on the shore from the wanderer. There is also a choice of decent restaurants, bars and of course burger joints. Not to mention just off back of the promenade into town, the civil war museum which really is a must to visit.
The voyager of the seas
Currently the Voyager of the Seas sails to the Mediterranean out of Venice, Italy and the Western Caribbean out of New Orleans, LA. In 2012, the ship will relocate to Asia becoming the largest cruise ship ever to sail out of Asia. On April 14 the Voyager of the Seas will begin its relocation to Asia sailing from New Orleans to Barcelona which will visit the ports of Nassau, Ponta Delgada, Malaga, Cartagena, Valencia, and ending the voyage in Barcelona, Spain. Then it will sail from Barcelona to Dubai on April 30 visiting Alexandria, make a transit through the Suez Canal, Sharm El-Sheikh, Safaga, arriving in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on May 15. Then the ship will sail from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Singapore visiting Goa, Kochi, Penang, and Port Kelang then arriving in Singapore on May 26. The ship will sail summer sailings out of Singapore and out

of China in the Summer of 2012. In the months of October through March 2013, the ship will sail out of Sydney visiting ports in Australia and New Zealand. In March 2013, the ship will return to Singapore. Visitors here, so its try something new, something tried and trusty! Saturday night at the Golf Club for steak pie and a knees up. It’s easy to understand why it’s always full, it’s got the nice combination of decent food, a bit of an atmosphere and some very good entertainment. I am not quite up to dancing yet, but hopefully soon will be able to bop at least sedately! On B the Trevi is always worth a visit for coffee or a meal. A spaghetti dish or pizza in the evening or the menu del dia during the day, the same applies to the Alley Palais where the Bistro continues to be a huge success- Have you tried the new Quality restaurant for a curry? Again worth the trip. Over on Sector A there is the new Vista bar, rapidly getting a good reputation. We did the Thursday night quiz hoping to come bottom and draw the booby prize, a packet of sweets, we even call ourselves the sugar babes! No not to be we scored 103 and the lowest team got 63! Now it’s a tough quiz, lots of contemporary questions, many music but since it always incorporates a section with “what would a hundred people think about X?”, it’s a leveler questions! The quiz is early doors at 6.30 PM finishes around 9.30PM with that nerve wracking card game, get your cards right or whatever, so people can get home for dogs, babysitters mid evening TV or just a plain old fashioned early night. We did try something new. A venture into darkest Bolnuevo seemed called for and we gave Amapola a try. Like many others we had seen the deal for two, although in our case it was three, This is on a Wednesday night. Its easy to find is signposted Hotel Playasol from the bottom road opposite the camp site and if you phone Kate Adams the English Maitre D on 660 328 0912 then you can get directions and book easily. Kate can also be contacted through the internet on kate@hotelplayasol.es. The restaurant is part of the hotel. You can if disabled take the lift from the front of the hotel to the back ground floor restaurant or park outside and walk down the steps, round the corner through the gardens and past the swimming pool to the entrance. The deal on a Wednesday is of the two for one variety, which meant a bill of 50 Euros for the three of us, including tax. The meal was enjoyable. It is silver service, so its

black clad waiters and linen table cloths. It’s a beautiful setting and Kate and her staff make you feel very welcome. The meal consisted of a chicken salad, very nicely presented, followed by a super soup. This was tasty. The mains involved the choice of fish or pork. Our table had both, so it was easy to judge. Both were excellent, small portions of delicious pork fillets or rolled white fish, very meaty. On the menu there was no vegetarian option but Kate informed that veggies are catered for, and to tell them when you book. There were some green beans and a half stuffed potato, again very tasty. The dessert was a square of forest fruits creamy Spanish style cheesecake. There was a singer who sang beautifully, just the right volume to listen to or talk against. One small but important point. The one thing you can rely on in a Spanish restaurant is the accompanying bread. Usually a chopped up baguette. Here it is a ciabatta style roll, worthy of comment. Most of us had two. A testament to the success of the Amapola, the restaurant was full at 8.30PM. There were three birthday parties in, including some friends of ours who obviously thoroughly enjoyed their night there. The meal is a combination of attentive waiting with no long waits between courses, some very good, well presented food and a very pleasant ambiance. An excellent choice for a party. Now it really has been all change on Sector A. Mike and Marilyn have gone from Cats. And Sarah and her partner

Sean have taken over. Both have been working there and at the former Saladillo Vista, so Sarah’s fish and chip Tuesday is well known! Watch this space for further developments as im sure that this couple have some big plans. Rod Sawyer

What’s going on... From 2009 to 2012!
The Camposol Fiesta has moved back in time; from the last weekend in June to the third, the 16th and 17th of the month. It’s a combo of Spanish fiesta and English country show; music, fireworks and free paella, all alongside the dog show, glamouros grannies, sideshows, tug o war and charities. The bars are represented over the year as well. It’s a weekend to take part in or watch; plenty of food and drink available, burgers and curries! 2009 saw the horses doing the flamenco show. This attracted large crowds on the Saturday afternoon and was very well received, amazing horse display 2010 headlined the Liverpool band, a tribute band brought over from the UK. Sunday night saw a variety show and Eric Faulkner. 2011 saw some 35 stalls and games! From Susies Fiesta face painting to Age Concern and Go MAD. Loads of local music acts took part, John Sloman, Backwater, A La Mode, alongside the ABBA elite and Fakers Quo. The years have also been marked by the grand car draw; which has always just made it to the draw on Sunday! This year the car has been upgraded! So the same odds but a better prize! Fireworks always complete the show and as usual in Spain are visually stunning. The committee is hard work, ask anyone who has served on it. The money to run the fiesta has to be raised every year and every year it gets tougher. Hopefully some of you will join the committee and help run 2013! Rod Sawyer
Fiesta Committee Chairman’s Welcome!
On behalf of the Fiestas Camposol committee I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all. Despite very difficult conditions for fundraising we have endeavoured to put on a fiesta which we hope will meet the needs of most people and showcase some of our very home grown talents. We have a mix of Spanish as well as British performers both young and not so young. Almost all our performers are new to the Camposol fiesta and we hope that this gives a fair and balanced perception of our lifestyle here on Camposol. If you have enjoyed their performance please let them know in the usual way, they need no more encouragement than that. Our aim as always is for ´Camposolers´ and our guests to have a great weekend and we hope that you will all extend a friendly welcome to our visitors from far and near. I would also like to inform you that the bars and catering pitches on the fiesta site are the only ones who have donated to the fiesta and deserve your support as without them there would not have been a fiesta this year. Each of these outlets will display a Fiestas Camposol logo to assist you in your choice. Neutering puppies
Neutering is the procedure used to ensure that an animal cannot reproduce. The operation is called a castration in males and a spay or ovariohysterectomy in females. Some humane societies and shelters are doing what they call “early age neutering”. This means spaying and castrating puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks of age. There are several issues surrounding this
topic. First, is it safe? One of the most important things to consider with young animals is how well they were tolerate anesthetics. What are the complications, and does early neutering affect the animal’s health or growth? And finally... WHY? First, is it safe? Research has found that very young puppies and kittens suffer from no more complications than older dogs and cats undergoing the procedures at traditional ages. On the subject of anesthetics, young puppies and kittens do very well under anesthesia when the medications are given appropriately and the animals are monitored. In fact, younger healthy pets actually recover from anesthesia earlier than older pets. Most puppies and kittens will be active and even playing within a few hours after their surgery. Older pets take longer to recover. Does early neutering affect their health or growth? Many veterinarians have worried that early neutering would affect a pet’s growth, future obesity, and overall health. Research has found that most of these concerns are largely unfounded. The rate of growth, a pet’s weight, and overall health were very similar in pets neutered early vs. those neutered at a traditional age. The complications in younger pets were not different from those shown in slightly older animals. Finally, why are these procedures performed? In short, this is one

of the best ways to limit the staggering problem of pet overpopulation. Animals are sterilized before they reach sexual maturity and there is no chance for an “oops” pregnancy. This also ensures that the new puppies and kittens’ owners will not back out on their promise to have their pet spayed or neutered. Whatever you do, make sure your pet is neutered. Neutered pets prevent pet overpopulation and minimize the countless number of animals that are euthanized every year
“2 Pints of Lager and a 4 man tent….” Part 2
Last month we printed an article called “2 Pints of Lager and a 4 man tent….” When everyone had stopped laughing, someone pointed out to me that due to his limited intelligence and sheer volume of enemies that the man in question has made, he was probably unaware of exactly who was responsible for writing the article. I would like to take this opportunity to state categorically that it was me, lest anyone else take credit for my penmanship. I would also like to point out that I asked all those who offered to buy me a drink in the bars of Camposol for writing it, to instead put the money in the charity tins on the bar, thus proving that good things come from shaming bad people. I hope this clears things up.

Stars over Camposol
with Keith Jackson With summer almost with us most of the spring constellations are now below the Western horizon during the hours of darkness and by the end of the month the last of them, Leo and Virgo, will have almost completely set. So, as the temperatures start to rise, now is a great way to spend a warm summer night looking for the summer constellations. As the nights are also getting lighter, midnight and the wee small hours is the best time for star hopping. So, what better place to start your search than the Summer Triangle. This is not an official constellation but a nick name given to three bright stars that form a huge triangle. This name was suggested by Sir Patrick Moore during an episode of “The Sky at Night” many years ago and has since come into general use. These three bright stars are Vega, Deneb and Altair the leading stars of three separate constellations Lyra (the Harp), Cygnus (the Swan) and Aquila (the Eagle)
(Please note that the diagram is condensed and that the constellations will actually appear much larger and further apart) So, if you’ve allowed 20 minutes or so to get your night vision, let’s start with Vega. Vega is a bluish white star that is triple the size of our Sun and one of the brightest stars in the night sky so should be easy to find. Vega is a very pretty star seen through binoculars and binoculars will also show the star to the left to be a double star (Epsilon Lyrae). Vega is the leading star of the constellation Lyra. Looking slightly north of East, Lyra is a comparatively small constellation shaped a bit like a parallelogram. Early in the month around midnight it will be 50 to 60 Degrees above the horizon, and will be almost directly overhead later in the month. Altair the leading star in Aquila is the next

brightest star in the region, to the right of Vega and lower in the sky. On a clear dark night you can confirm that you’ve found Altair by the two fainter stars just above and below it. Cygnus the swan is a fairly easily recognized constellation and because of its shape is also known as the Northern Cross. The leading star Deneb, which makes up the tail of Cygnus the Swan, is the least brightest of the three stars that form the Summer Triangle and can be found to the lower left of Vega at an altitude roughly midway between Vega and Altair. In mythology one story says that Cygnus the swan represents Orpheus, who was murdered by the Thracian women while under the influence of Bacchus the Roman god of wine and intoxication. Upon his death, Orpheus the celebrated musician and poet was placed in the heavens to spend eternity with his harp, Lyra. Aquila has been known as the eagle as far back as 1200BC. The Persians, Hebrews, Arabs, Greeks and Latins all saw this constellation as an eagle. In Greek mythology, Aquila is identified as the eagle that carried Zeus’ thunderbolts and was once dispatched by the god to carry Ganymede, the young Trojan boy Zeus desired, to Olympus to be the cup bearer of the gods. Lyra represents the lyre played by Orpheus, musician of the Argonauts and son of Apollo and the muse Calliope. Apollo gave his son the lyre as a gift, and Orpheus played it so
well that even the wild beasts, the rocks, and the trees were charmed by his music. As with most constellations, the shapes do not readily leap out at you and scream “here I am”, so a little concentration and patience is required. However, if you’ve managed to spot Vega, Deneb and Altair, congratulations – you’ve found The Summer Triangle. Time for a glass of something before bed I think.

Homes B Clean Report
During the month of April no new projects were undertaken. B Clean helpers spent their time spraying weeds, generally tidying up the area close to them. All the roundabouts on B Sector with the exception of the roundabout by Consum are looking pretty good. One of our next projects is to make improvement to the Consum roundabout. As you know little or no rain fell during April, causing problems for the 900 Oleanders that were planted last winter. Anybody able to take one or two containers of water with them when they go out and water a few plants will be very helpful. Everyone will benefit once the plants are established. We have obtained permission from MASA to place a sign at the entrance to B Sector, we have also had council permission but we are awaiting the written licence before we commence the work. We are hoping to have the new sign up before the Fiesta in June. We always need more helpers so if you can spare an hour or two a week until the end of June please contact Helen and Glyn 968199506 or Sandy 968986030. Our Monthly meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month in Trevi’s Function Room 16.00to 17.00. Please join us with any suggestions for us to continue to improve our sector. Our Weekly Working Party meets every Tuesday 9am, till 10/11ish. Usually in front of the Commercial Centre unless otherwise arranged. For Information; Please contact: Sandy 968986030 or Helen/Glyn 968199506.
Welcome to Los Palacios.
Many of you will already have seen our latest attraction, the artisan well built out of local stone, which should be obvious to everyone leaving the motorway from Mazarron, or entering sector A via the overpass, which is still under construction at the time of writing, yet already many people have congratulated us on this work of art. It is very special. Our thanks go to local stone mason, Jason Jessop, of ART OF STONEWORK, who created this monument for us, managing to mix traditional Yorkshire craftsmanship and local stone to create a monument which is totally in keeping with the area, and looks as if it should have been there for ever. Already the well is filled with colourful flowers, and soon the roof will host a sign that reads, WELCOME TO LOS PALACIOS, CAMPOSOL. We want to welcome all visitors to the area in which we live, and have worked so hard to create an area in which we can be

justifiably proud. We also ask them to respect the garden areas, and enjoy the facilities that we have provided. REMEMBER, all of this has been made possible by the hard working volunteers, and the entirely voluntary contributions of the residents. When our group started, the main concern was cleaning up the area in which we live, because we were being neglected both by Masa and the Council. Over the years we have earned respect and support from both parties, and most importantly the residents, which has enabled
contributions from those attending of what they enjoyed at the coronation party, ( I am really looking forward to a Spam butty). To finish the night in style, we have The Doghouse Blues Band, plus Phil Brady and the Brady Bunch. And we have to try to fit that all in by midnight ? Sector A home Owners meeting
Last month the committee had its AGM. At it two resignations were reported, Beryl Holland and John Grant. It appears since then that another has stepped down. At the meeting which was excellently and multi lingually chaired, the committee announced that in the light of the impending recognition and take over of Sector A, the committee was calling another meeting on April 21st at Marianos. The reason for this meeting was to agree new committee members who would essentially take over and help form a new committee. The reason for this is that the Home owners committee follows the constitution of the old entity. Given that the entity will be formally wound up by the Council on recognition then this constitution and bye laws would clearly be inappropriate. However a new set of byelaws and constitution would be needed. What is less clear is the function of this committee; simply a Neighbours Association of Home Owners? Some form of community of Owners would only be appropriate if the Council recognised it as such, but this would fly in the face of a complete takeover of sector A. In the event some 24 owners turned up for the meeting. Since a third of these were the committee, then it meant the meeting was effectively run on say at best the owners of ten villas out of the 750 on A. The meeting was certainly well publicized but there was nothing to vote on except some new faces, two to be precise, one of them being David Peake who runs the gardening group. Linda Biggs certainly played a big part in both meetings. Does apathy rule? What continuing role would a committee have under direct rule? Rod Sawyer
us to extend our activities to create the garden and leisure areas which we enjoy today. Soon the council will adopt Camposol A. Already they are assisting us greatly in keeping our area clean, although it is still up to us to finish, and maintain, the garden areas. Sector A homeowners association is to be replaced by Los Palacios Residents Association, which will publish a new constitution, designed to work within the new needs of an area under council control, to make representation, and better support the residents of Camposol A. I have been elected as a representative on that committee, so communication between the two volunteer groups should be improved, and Camposol A should continue to get better and better. The clean up group will be renamed Los Palacios Gardening Volunteers. About the distribution of rabbits with us because our local farmer brings his huge flock of sheep across the moors in a trek
in the region, the document confirms that the ‘Oryctalugus cunniculus’ is distributed very unevenly and is “absent in large areas of central and northwest.” The highest densities are located in the Valley Guadalentín (Totana and Alhama, especially) and the drainage of the river Segura. Field work also highlights the recovery of the rabbit in the Highlands, as they found large densities cereal steppes of Yecla, as in some parts of Cehegin and Caravaca de la Cruz. This census found only very high densities (5 to 10 rabbits / km) in the itineraries of Totana, Lorca and Cartagena on the border with Fuente Alamo, while the results were particularly low (<1 rabbit / km) in Librilla and Torre Pacheco. ANSE insists that “the emergence of rabbit hunting was disproportionate and ineffective” and regrets that the Autonomous Community “leave the door open to restate the situation in 2012”. Certainly the rabbit population of Camposol seem alive and vibrant! As do the hunters, whose activities clash with the walkers, with or without dogs. Will hunting be extended in 2012?

Do diesels still pay?
Used models must do 10,000 miles to recoup outlay, according to the experts at Glass’s Used car buyers choosing diesels over petrol cars are unlikely to save money unless they cover over 10,000 miles a year. That’s the verdict of valuation experts at Glass’s Guide. They say drivers not only pay more to buy a new diesel, but the difference grows on the used market – with fuel prices increasing demand. Glass’s managing editor Adrian Rushmore said: “The average new family diesel costs £1,300 more than the average petrol model. But the gap increases to £1,900 (see table) at three years old.” Yet demand for diesels isn’t just driven by fuel costs; it’s also down to the cars’ driveability. “Modern diesels have more torque and run as smoothly as petrols,” added Rushmore. Glass’s calculated the 10,000-mile tipping point after analysing thousands of car prices and factoring in fuel costs. It worked out that drivers buying a used petrol Vauxhall Zafira and driving 6,000 miles annually would save more than £1,000 over three years, after paying for more fuel. Rushmore said owners would still be in the black after shelling out more for road tax and selling the car, too. The good news is that the difference isn’t likely to grow. Rushmore said: “Diesel sales overtook petrol last year, so prices shouldn’t rise.” And AA technical specialist Vanessa Guyll added: “There’s more to go wrong on modern diesels, and they’re more expensive to fix.” How used prices compare: Petrol vs Diesel model / Avg Price Diff Ford Focus 1.8i vs 1.6 TDCi / £1,750 Audi A3 1.6 vs 1.9 TDIe / £1,800 BMW 320i vs 320d / £1,700 Peugeot 308 1.6 VTi vs 1.6 HDi / £1,700 Vauxhall Zafira 1.8i vs 1.7 CDTI / £1,900. Fiat 500X on way
A pumped-up version of the Fiat 500 leads an SUV explosion, with new models from Peugeot, Renault, Ford, Jeep and SsangYong If you thought the 500 looked good, just
wait for the 500X. That’s what the new SUV version will be called – and it’s the next step in Fiat’s growing 500-badged family, following on from the 500L MPV. It shares the same chassis – based around the latest Panda’s – and will be similar in size. But it’ll be even better looking, with a sweeping coupe-like shape as our illustration shows. Most versions will be front-wheel drive, yet there are rumours that Fiat will offer a 4x4 model, too, just like the Panda. Expect a starting price of around £14,000 when it arrives in 2013. The rivals Peugeot 2008 Coming 2013 At the Beijing Motor Show, Peugeot unveiled the 208based Urban Crossover Concept – a Juke rival with a focus on city drivers. It gets the company’s latest design language, with swept-back headlights, a bold chrome grille and a prominent bonnet badge. The car is feasible for production, too, using the same platform

and engines as the new 208 – ranging from an efficient 1.4-litre e-HDi to a flagship 1.6-litre turbo. When the Urban Crossover Concept goes on sale next year, it will be called the 2008 and cost from £13,000. Renault SUV Coming 2013 The first of a raft of new SUVs from Renault is based on Nissan’s Juke. The as-yet-unnamed car is inspired by the Captur concept seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and will be offered in front and all-wheel-drive form. Engines are likely to be shared with the Juke, meaning a 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbodiesel. Renault is also working on a larger Qashqai-based SUV, and has shown an even bigger X-Trail-based concept called the Hi-Cross. Jeep SUV Coming 2013 Jeep also has a new baby SUV on the way. It will be based on the platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and take its design cues from the Renegade concept, with two or four-wheel drive and Fiat Multijet diesels The supermini-sized SUV could arrive as early as next year and is part of Jeep’s ambitious plans to quadruple its sales in the UK. Ford Ecosport Coming 2014 The Fiestabased
2012
Ecosport has been developed by Ford’s South American division, and debuted in Delhi earlier this year. It’s aimed at emerging markets, with a tweaked version likely to come here and sit below the Kuga. Engine options will include Ford’s new three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo. MG Icon Coming 2015 The Icon crossover concept could become the first modernera MG roadster. Its designer, Brit Steve Harper, told us: “We asked, what would the MGB GT be like today? This could be it.” The front has shades of the MGB, while the platform will also underpin next year’s MG3.

and is on sale now. Saab Parts UK has taken delivery of the convertibles, which have been handfinished by passionate Saab employees from the brand’s home town, Trollhattan, Sweden. The car maker went into liquidation in November 2011.
Seven of these special editions make up the final batch, joining seven others that have already been sold in the UK. Other cars coming to the UK are powered by the firm’s 2.0-litre petrol engine with 163hp or 220bhp. All will feature alloy wheels, heated leather front seats with active head restraints, Park Assist, Bluetooth, ESP and six airbags. Saab Parts UK has 87 dealers across the UK and says that interested parties should visit saab.co.uk to register their interest. The Saab 9-3 Convertible starts from £22,750.
The 9-3 Convertibles, which will have sentimental value for enthusiasts, will be better equipped than any before. All models feature additional gear, with three trim specs including SE, Aero and Independence Edition among the last load. The Independence Edition is based on the Aero, and is powered by a 180bhp 1.9 TTiD twin-turbodiesel mated to a six-speed automatic. It has unique Amber paint, 18-inch alloy wheels and carbonlook leather seats with orange detailing.
Sports Say goodbye to free golf
By John Brown You’ll be able to tell your grandchildren about it: ‘In the olden days we used to watch golf for nothing – on the BBC. They showed it for four days, with no adverts!’ All that may be coming to an end. This comes as a result of the R & A having raised their expectations of the BBC as it comes to the start of new contract negotiations. The BBC has already dropped the Grand National and the Boat Race, and look like they are going to drop the Open from their dwindling sports coverage. When asked whether the BBC’s apparent disinterest in golf was a concern to the R & A, Chief Executive Peter Dawson said: “Certainly. We have had that conversation with the BBC. They know we have got our eye on them. It hasn’t just been in golf but with the likes of tennis as well. You have to stay in practice and keep up with advances in technology. You need to be in practice to do it well. We obviously want the Open Championship to be seen by as many people as we can. The BBC know they need to get off the financial plateau they are on with the Open Championship by the next time it comes around. Who knows who will be on the scene then? The BBC have some very talented people in their production team. We want the Open to be seen by as many spectators as we possibly can. We also know, over time as things change, the choice for people to consume the championship is not just on television but through digital media. The BBC have therefore been warned by the R&A they could lose the rights to live coverage of the Open if they do not keep pace with new technology. A contract is in place until 2016 but the corporation have reduced coverage of events in recent years and are facing fierce competition from satellite broadcaster Sky, who shared last month’s coverage of the Masters. The Open is currently on the B List of sporting events which are protected, which only stipulates highlights must be available free-to-air. But advancements
page 30
in technology, which Sky first used in their football coverage, but have since transferred to golf including methods such as 3D TV, mean the BBC’s stranglehold on the only major played outside the United States is under threat. This new technology is good. I watched the Ryder Cup in 3D and it opened up a new dimension for viewing golf. For faster action sports such as football, it is less useful. It isn’t clear from Dawson’s comments which part of the BBC coverage he isn’t happy with? The BBC’s live coverage of last year’s Open Championship was fronted by Hazel Irvine, after a short experiment with Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker. Peter Alliss, one of the BBC’s longest-serving commentators, is the most distinctive broadcasting voice behind the microphone. Dawson also suggested that ESPN – who hold a US broadcast deal with the R & A – could become potential rivals to the BBC. Contractual talks are due to get underway between the R and A and the BBC about 18 months before the present deal ends. It is hard to see where Dawson thinks Sky is better than the BBC? It certainly isn’t about viewers having to sit and watch Sky’s three muppets filling the US commercial breaks with their tedious speculation about whether Tiger is back to his best or not? Dawson reiterated his personal stance that the respective tours in Europe and the US should make it public when players are punished for bad on-course behaviour. Tiger Woods again generated unwanted attention at the Masters for swearing and kicking a club; the former world No1 has previous for spitting on courses. “It is a rather unedifying spectacle, there’s no doubt about that,” Dawson said. “I am on record as saying public sanctions would not be a bad thing and that they would be more likely to lead to a correction of bad behaviour.” While the R&A may believe the BBC are dragging their heels
in terms of technological advancements they are trying to catch up themselves after announcing the ban on mobile phones will be lifted for this summer’s Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes. Calls will be allowed in designated areas but photography and video recording will not be permitted during the four days of the championship. “There is no denying the attachment people feel to their mobile phones both in terms of gathering information and staying in touch with family and friends,” said Dawson. We understand this and allowing their use at the championship will enrich the Open experience. We understand there will be concerns over this change in policy but we will be liaising with spectators around the tented village and food and drink outlets. Strict rules will be put in place designed to ensure that play is not affected in any way by the change. Our spectators are very knowledgeable and understand golf and so we are confident they will respect the players.” This is clearly humbug. It is also far from honesty on the part of Dawson. Mobile phones are the bane of sports events where silence is required. It is far from clear why this change back to a previously bad scenario has taken place? This year in total, the BBC will cover just six days of live men’s professional golf. As recently as seven years ago it offered 24 days of live action. Peter Alliss, the legendary commentator who has been the BBC’s voice of golf for around 40

years, is one of a number within the sport who have been critical of the trend. Now Dawson, one of the most powerful and influential figures in golf, has made it clear he is not happy either, and that the BBC’s association with the Open, which stretches back more than 50 years, could come to an end if the broadcaster does not tidy up its act. Personally, I think this would be a great loss. It is also likely to be a great loss to those of us who cannot access Sky TV while we are in Spain. Sky TV coverage of golf is good, but not brilliant. I hope that Dawson and the BBC can come to some agreement, and that this apparent spat is not solely about money?

Lothar Matthaus feels that Germany are the favourites to win Euro 2012 after reigning champions Spain. The 1990 World Cup winner believes that the Nationalelf’s stars have shown their abilities over the course of the 201112 campaign, and stressed that Bayern Munich’s good performances in the Champions League is a strong indication that Germany have what it takes to go far. “There will be many theories on who is the favourite to win the crown this year and I have no hesitation in sticking my neck out to put my home team, Germany, next to defending champions Spain among the strongest title contenders,” Matthaus stated in his column for The Times of India. “It’s not just the patriot in me who is saying this but if we analyse the German squad and the way the players have been performing over the years, anyone would be willing to bet their money on Joachim Low’s lads, provided they are able to break the knockout-round jinx. “Just like Spain, where Barcelona provides the core of the team, Bayern Munich have been the supply line for the national squad and the fact that the Bavarians are in their second Champions League final in three years show that most of their stars are in great form.”

Property, Financial and Legal YOU BUYING IN SPAIN ???
This month I want to address the topic of buying property in Spain – now that the weather is improving – there are quite a lot of you looking around with a view to buying your first property, or maybe you want to sell your existing property and downsize – or even go large!! There are some fantastic bargains to be had in and around this area and its encouraging that a lot of attention is focused on this region because the property values are so attractive, in comparison with other regions in Spain. The process of buying a house in Spain is fundamentally quite different to the process in the UK. In Spain, it is possible to buy without obtaining detailed legal advice and, in fact, some buyers unfortunately end up in the Notary’s office to sign documents and then discovering that there are serious issues with their “dream house” they are anxious to purchase. In the UK, the Seller and the Buyer are separately represented by Solicitors. The
page 32
conveyancing procedure is governed by the Law Society Regulations, under which a contract is signed which is legally binding and enforceable by either party. The Land Registry governs the whole of England & Wales. How different that is to Spain – where each town has its own registry with their own method of working. As an experienced property lawyer, I am concerned that anyone buying a property here should have access to as much information as possible about the property ie. the legal title for a start, plus plans and other information regarding the liabilities of the property and, in fact, any issues which will affect the buyer once they have taken over ownership. As part of my services, I carry out such investigations to appraise the buyer before steps are then taken to legally formalise the transaction. The Notary with whom I work endorses this procedure and in some cases it is beneficial for a meeting at the Notary with the client, before the legal paperwork is drawn up. This reduces the risk of problems coming out of the woodwork on the day of completion!! My friend “Prudence” pops up and asks questions such as “does the property have an escritura and is it registered at the Land Registry ?”, “Is the current owner of the property registered in Spain for tax purposes? “ “Is the Seller aware of the liability to pay the plus valia tax ? “ these are just some
www.thecamposoljournal.com
points which need to be addressed. So, if your on the walkabout or driveabout looking for a new abode and want to take the next step, give me a call if you would like me to embark upon my investigations to find out all the information you need to be aware of and to assist you with your chosen property, right from the outset to completion of the land registry formalities. Please do not hesitate to telephone me at the Camposol Business Centre on 968 103 008 or on my mobile 634 053 976. Alternatively, email me on shirleyfisherlegalservices@gmail.com Conchi or Antonio there will take a message for me if Im not around when you call. Bye for now and happy house hunting !! Property, Financial and Legal The economy minister for Spain, Luis de Guindos, hopes foreign investors and real-estate funds will help offload property assets from the banks’ balance sheet
Less than 3 months after tightening rules to force lenders to accept larger property losses, Spain is seeking new ways to convince the bond market that bank losses won’t overburden public finances. MABS EVENTS IN MAZARRÓN May 2012
Another busy month in the camp of Andreas Animal Rescue and the weather is starting to hot up too! We are still trying to help Galgos Del Sol in the rescue of the Isla Plana galgos and have said we will be available at short notice wherever possible to assist in the removal of the last of these poor creatures. On the good news front, our little partially sighted boy “lucky” has found his forever home on Camposol and is settling in well into his new surroundings, “Pumpkin” has also been rehomed in Camposol and is finding life with his new sister a lot of fun, and the little puppy, who we named “Memphis” that was dumped in the bins in Fuente Alamo has finally made his way to Milton Keynes in the UK and is happily settling in to life with a 2yr old child to play with.. but he is wondering where the sun has gone!! A warning to all people living locally to the Fuente Alamo area, there seems to be a lot of dogs going missing in the last few weeks, mainly after being out with their owners and running off to play and chase rabbits.... these dogs are not coming home as they normally do and therefore we would like to ask everyone to be vigilant and maybe consider keeping your dogs on a lead whilst walking them out in the campo, we are keeping best wishes close to our hearts for all the people that are currently seeking their loved furry friends out there and wishing a safe return for all of them. A couple of small appeals for you if anyone has any spare wool at all, our volunteer knitters need some to get getting on with the winter coats for next autumn/winter so would be grateful of any donations. Also, we need small new items for the stall at the Camposol fiesta in a few weeks time for one of the games, if you could please have a quick look through drawers etc - all donation gratefully accepted. We have a few dogs that have been within the charity for over 12months now and we’d really like to see them find their forever homes too - visit our facebook page “Andreas Animal Rescue & The Henrietta Foundation” and look through the album of dogs needing home April 2012, with special mention to our lovely twin girls “Mia and Maddie” who were found dumped on the country club and are currently being fostered nearby - it would be fantastic is these girls could be found a home together as they have never been separated and are lost without each other after just a few minutes, they are Spanish sheepdogs with fantastic natures - Pictured here - Maddie is showing their winter coat and Mia is sporting the new summer cut, which is great for the heat of summer ahead! Thanking you all in anticipation and looking forward to seeing you all at the Camposol Fiesta if not before Remember, if anyone can help with adopting, of fostering and of our lovely boys and girls please give me a call Andrea
