JOURNAL
THE Dear Reader,
Welcome to the June edition of “The Journal”. I can’t quite believe that it is June already, it seems like it was just Christmas time last week, and now the sun is shining and the pool is (almost) warm enough to go swimming in. It’s time to enjoy the summer, lets hope that it’s a good one and the influx of holidaymakers give a boost to the local economy. We have lots and lots in this month’s magazine and we really hope that you enjoy it. It’s all change at Best Wishes on Camposol as the Costa Café moves upstairs to the old Tavi Paint shop, and Best Wishes will be undergoing some renovations and bringing us the regions first bureau de change that is not in a bank. They promise to have better rates than the banks and charge no commission, so that sounds like good news for everyone. Read more about it in their advert later in the magazine. The good news about June is that it is time for the event that we have all come to welcome in our social calendar that is of course the Camposol Fiesta! In the past the survival of the Fiesta has been in doubt due to various reasons, one being lack of volunteers for the committee. This year however those involved have given countless hours of their time to put together an event that is set to be the best Fiesta yet, and here at the The Journal we take our hats off to them for their hard work and dedication to the community. Well done guys. You can find the full Fiesta program later in the magazine. Any photos from the Fiesta that you would like us publish, please email them to me. My email address is on the column on the right. On the subject of email, this month I seem to still be having ongoing problems. Sadly the junk email seems to have no trouble getting through. Well I assume its junk mail. Either that or the general consensus among you is that I need to lose weight by trying “The Holy Grail of Weight Loss”, buy cheap prescription drugs from Canada and get myself involved in several Nigerian business deals where it appears that I have been bequeathed hundreds of millions of US Dollars. On a serious note however, if you email me and don’t get a response, then it’s probably safe to assume that I haven’t got your email. Enjoy the summer, enjoy the Fiesta and I will see you next time! Happy Reading, Robert Rutherford

THE POLITICAL SUB COMMITTEE The Political Sub-Committee of the CRA has taken legal advice about how we set up a Camposol Party to contest the next local elections. This has been decided upon due to our frustration with the Town Hall and its apparent lack of interest in Camposol itself. Acting on the legal advice it received the PSC is currently writing the Constitution of our proposed party and this should be completed shortly. At that point the Constitution will be submitted to the relevant authorities in Madrid for ratification. Once this has been achieved we will begin to select candidates to represent Camposol at the next local election. It is hoped that by concentrating on Camposol itself the new party will attract support from those who live on the urbanisation regardless of nationality. Further news about our proposed party will continue to be issued as we work towards creating a Camposol Party. Steve Blacker produced a comprehensive account of the proceedings which can be viewed on the CRA and Sector D Group websites. LIAISON OFFICER APPOINTMENT. Ernie Prior has been appointed by the committee as the Liaison Officer for the CRA. Ernie will work closely with all the volunteer groups on Camposol providing an essential point of contact and offering assistance when requested. STREET LIGHTS The CRA are continually raising the subject of street lights with the Mayor. In February he promised to get the main duel carriageway lights put on. We are now in May and it’s still not done. We are meeting him again on the 17th May when it will be on the agenda again. Burglaries have increased of late despite Camposol now having a dedicated policeman. Proper lighting is a deterrent and we will be emphasising the point.

group, Pescanova, which is in voluntary receivership, has close to four billion euros in short- and long-term debt, more than double the amount declared as of September of last year. The company, which has admitted operating a dual accounting system, has yet to publish its revised balance sheet for last year despite repeated requests to do so by the National Securities Commission (CNMV). However, the figures it has released show that debts of 1.522 billion it had previously declared were only the tip of the iceberg. The company has now acknowledged that the parent company alone has debt of 1.850 billion euros, while its Spanish subsidiaries owe 350 million, and the foreign units that it consolidates between 650 and 700 million. The group has also issued a further 400 million euros in bonds. In addition, the company also owes money to suppliers and the public administrations. A court in Pontevedra last week officially accepted Pescanova’s request for receivership and removed its chairman, Manuel Fernández de Sousa, from office along with the rest of the management board. The company is now under the tutelage of the CNMV. Fernández de Sousa may face insider trading charges after secretly selling half of his stake in the company prior to its problems coming to light in March.

Bob Dylan’s instant reaction to the recently completed album Paul McCartney brought by his London hotel room for a quick listen in the spring of 1967 may not sound like the most thoughtful analysis ever offered, but it still to hit the nail on the

Club Band for the first time, “you don’t want to be cute anymore.” In time, the Beatles’ eighth studio album would come to be regarded by many as the greatest in the history of rock and roll, and oceans of ink would be spilt in praising and analyzing its revolutionary qualities. But what Bob Dylan picked up on immediately was its meaning to the Beatles themselves, who turned a critical corner in their career with the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on this day in 1967. Writing in The Times of London in 1967, the critic Kenneth Tynan called the release of Sgt. Pepper “a decisive moment in the history of Western civilization,” but 30 years later, Paul McCartney called it a decisive moment of a more personal nature. “We were not boys, we were men,” is how he summed up the Beatles’ mindset as they gave up live performance and set about defining themselves purely as a studio band. “All that boy [stuff], all that screaming, we didn’t want any more,” McCartney said. “There was now more to it.” With Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles announced their intention to be seen “as artists rather than just performers.” Sgt. Pepper is often cited as the first “concept album,” and as the inspiration for other great pop stars of the 60s, from the Stones and the Beach Boys to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, to reach for new heights of creativity. For the Beatles themselves, 1967 marked not just a new creative peak, but also the beginning of a three-year period in which the group recorded and released an astonishing five original studio albums, including two—1968’s The Beatles (a.k.a. “The White Album”) and 1969’s Abbey Road—that occupy the 10th and 14th spots, respectively, on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the Greatest Albums of All Time. Also in the top 15 on that list are Rubber Soul (1965) at #5, Revolver (1966) at #3 and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at #1.

BARBERSHOP TAKES THE COSTA DEL SOL BY STORM! Some 300 barbershop aficionados took Benalmádena, Málaga by storm when they arrived for their fifth annual convention last weekend. This is the second time that the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) has based its event on the Costa del Sol. “Our delegates come from all
over Europe, and we are keen to establish convention venues with excellent travel connections and accommodation.” said SABS Vice President, Lyn Baines. “This is the second time that we have hosted this international event in Benalmádena; it’s a great venue and we always receive such a warm welcome”. Delegates were based in the Sunset Beach Club Hotel, with shows and contests taking place in the Moonlight
Lounge at the Sunset Beach Club, where SABS also held its second international quartet contest. Spangles, from Los Alcázares, Murcia, became gold medal champions of Spain and Portugal for the second time, also sweeping the board by winning all three trophies for top scores in music,

We can’t wait for the next one!” commented Linda. Madrid ladies’ chorus, The Barbees, won the silver medal and Southern Sound, from Fuengirola, Málaga, took the bronze medal.
In the quartet contest, Fourmidables from Torrevieja, Alicante were crowned Gold Medal Champions for the first time, having won silver in the last two contests. The silver medal went to Hanfris from Barcelona and the bronze medal was won by Cleftomania from the Algarve in Portugal. Hullabaloo from Torrevieja won the Senior & Novice Quartet Awards and Fénix Quartet from Los Alcázares won the Highest Scoring Ladies’ Quartet Award. Bad News for Smokers and Drinkers? The government has ruled out any further hikes in major taxes this year and is instead studying increasing special levies on items such as alcohol and tobacco along with environment taxes to help meet its deficit target for this year. However, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro has already flagged that the temporary hikes in personal and corporate income tax introduced last year would remain in place in this year’s budget. The government feels it has some scope to raise the overall tax burden, given that tax revenues in Spain currently account for only 36 percent of GDP, compared with an average of 46.5 percent in the euro zone as a whole. Alcohol is one of the few areas that has so far escaped the government’s reformist zeal. Tax collections on alcoholic drinks last year fell by 3.5 percent to 745 million euros and the Finance Ministry is sounding out players

S.L., the company that manages the sale of the properties. The 1,500 million euros “value of the 12,000 Spanish properties is 51% of the total, which is the percentage of the company that is actually for sale. La Caixa plans to remain in the company. YOUR Camposol Fiesta 2013 Programme of Events - Friday & Saturday 14th /15th June This year’s Fiesta has been organised by a brand new committee so we took the opportunity to build on the success of previous events whilst introducing some changes. Notably the main change is that the event is shorter this year and has been compressed into Friday night and all day Saturday. You will see that there is fun packed, non-stop programme of events with something for everyone. The emphasis is on community and family with a good mix of British and Spanish culture. The Fiesta will be hosted by the one and only Byron and will be opened on Friday evening at around 6pm by José Andrés Navarro Yepes, District Mayor of El Saladillo. Friday night is a “Musical Extravaganza” with tributes to some of the most well known artists of our time. Dicky Ray will set the ball rolling with his amazing tribute to Phil Collins; followed by local entertainers; Keiran as Robbie Williams, Nigel as Elvis Presley and the Diva herself
Suzy G. We are delighted that the Friday Finale will be provided by “The Beatles Experience”….the best Lennon/ McCartney Tribute on the Costas! There will then be music into the small hours provided by our very own Stevie “T” from Costa Calida Radio. Saturday is the “Non-Stop, Family Fun Day” where there will be something to suit all ages. Starting at around 9.30am with the Fun run and free pony rides for the children from 11am -2pm, there will something going on no matter what time of day you join us! We are delighted to be joined by “2 Shoes” who are “totes amazeballs” ….as they would say! Lucy and Charley are the Essex girls who made it through to the 2011 live shows of the UK X factor….Along with our very own Simon Cowell, Ken Payne, they will be judging the “Search for a Fie-Star” Talent Competition and later in the evening we will see them perform their fun show. The Fiesta Headline Act is “Soul Power”. With front man JJ Soul Man, the five piece band play Classic Soul and Motown Classics guaranteed to get you up on the dance floor…. As you are probably aware by now, there is no car raffle this year…..instead you have the chance to win a dream holiday

Spain has the highest life expectancy in Europe
A fruit vendor in Barcelona. A Mediterranean diet may be a contributory factor to Spain’s high healthy life expectancy. They may be struggling with financial disaster, but the Spanish have the highest healthy life expectancy in Europe – and beat Australia, Canada, Norway and the USA as well.
Spain has an excellent healthcare system, ranked seventh in 2000 on the only occasion the World Health Organisation has compiled a league table. The UK was 18th. But it is not just the structures or even the skills of the doctors that matter. It is also the state of health of the people who arrive in the clinics. Maybe the Mediterranean diet, heavy on fruit, salads, fish and olive oil, is responsible for the low death rate from heart disease – Spain has the 3rd lowest level of years of life lost. It also does well on a number of cancers – pancreatic, prostate, breast and oesophageal. Families still care for ailing relatives – taking daily meals to those in hospital is normal and premature deaths from falls are low.
New Coast Law to help half a million people The conservative government’s new Coast
Law, which is significantly more lenient than its predecessor, will benefit over half a million people who own homes, hotels, beach bars and other businesses right on the beachfront. “Let’s take advantage of the impact that’s already been done,” the secretary of state for the environment, Federico Ramos, said on Friday. The Popular Party (PP) had always been critical of a law aimed at clearing the Spanish coastline of the cement that covers it following years of indiscriminate building. Although it was passed in 1988, it took inspectors years to map out exactly which properties lie within 100 meters or so from the waterline — an area considered of public use. Homes falling inside that area could not be sold by their owners, who only got a concession to live in them. In 2009, an amendment stated that properties built before 1988 would be left out of the expropriation. Still, thousands of foreigners who bought properties in Spain, including many Britons and Germans, were affected by

Local charity PALS achieves donations of over 250,000Euros. AYS group
Derek Miles is very well known in the Mazarron area of Murcia. He is the Director of the AYS Group which has been established in the Costa Calida for nearly ten years. Most people know Derek as the happy-go- lucky window cleaner as the Group includes a professional window cleaning service for both commercial and residential properties. However he is also a popular figure on the Camposol Thursday market where he sells The H2ozone Water Filtration Systems. Kevin Johnson, a resident on Camposol recently had one of the water filter systems installed and in his own words, he is “over the moon” with it. A friend recommended having a system installed but as a “newbie” to Spain, he was unsure which supplier to choose. He found Derek’s number in an advert in The Journal and gave him a call. Kevin said that Derek “seemed like a really nice guy who didn’t blind him with science and more importantly there was no hard sell” Kevin said “ Derek said that I could find him on the Camposol Market or he could come to me with no obligation whatsoever.. I went to the market and we had a chat. Derek explained that there are two types of filter system. The “whole
page 22
house system” which would reduce the limescale in my household appliances and the “drinking water filter system” which removes 99% of the bacteria and 98% of the chlorine so that I could drink the water straight from the tap. He assured me that it would eliminate all limescale and it would stop the bad taste and odour. He went on to show me a demonstration of the kit and I was surprised at how compact it was. I could see it would fit easily under my sink. I said I would let him know later. He was great and didn’t pressure me to buy there and then. I went to discuss it with my wife and she immediately agreed that we should have the drinking water system ….no more limescale in the kettle and iron; no more carrying heavy bottles from the supermarket (you can tell who does the chores in our house!) and no more bad tasting water….It was a” no brainer” and I hadn’t even told her that at a cost of 60 euro; it worked out cheaper than buying bottled water! The only question I hadn’t asked was how much it cost for the filter to be changed so I called Derek that

afternoon. I was pleased to learn that it was less than 50 euro per year and that I could change them myself or he would do it for free! What more could I want? I had the system installed two days later by a registered plumber and the rest is history as they say! The system does exactly what it says on the tin and both my wife and I are delighted” Other satisfied customers: Mrs Thackwell of Camposol said “ I originally had a system from another company but wasn’t happy with it. I had replacement system from Derek and it is much better” Mrs Swindells of Camposol said “ Derek is 100% reliable and a pleasure to deal with”

Technology sponsored by Samsung Galaxy s4 hits 6 million sales already A Samsung executive has claimed that six million Samsung Galaxy S4s were sold by the 10th May. The Samsung Galaxy S4 technically hit the market on April 26 2013, and four million handsets were shipped to supply chains by the end of the month
- although presumably Samsung began shipping the handset to retailers ahead of that date. Who knows if anyone at Samsung could have foretold that the S4 would break the internal records set by the Galaxy S3 which hit three million shipments in, conveniently, three weeks. The chatty executive went on to force the point, telling Korean paper Chosun that “As of Friday [May 10], we have sold more than 6 million units, and we predict that we could break the 10-million mark by as early as the end of this month.” It’s a little unclear over whether that six million figure is actual sales or just shipments, which muddies these ‘early figures’ - although there’s no doubt the S4 is selling like rock cakes made of molten lava. While shifting phones is something of Samsung’s forte, it could be there’s no word on how many S4s have actually been exchanged for cash yet. But we wouldn’t be surprised if it equals or breaks the S3’s record of 20 million sales in 100 days.

Internet Explorer 10. The Safest way to surf the net.
Germany tells Google to tidy up autocomplete
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 10 browser is free to download and offers more secure than any of its rivals in terms of protecting users from harmful downloads, according to new research. A study said IE10 blocked considerably more malware downloads than Google Chrome and wiped the floor with Apple’s Safari and Mozilla’s Firefox as well as the Opera browser. Using active malicious URLs on Windows 8 machines, Microsoft’s browser was able to block 99.96 of malware downloads before the user’s anti-virus software is even called into action. That compares with over 83 per cent for Google Chrome (versions 25 and 26), which is actually up from around 70 per cent in 2012. After IE10 and Chrome, there’s a big drop off with Safari blocking 10.6 per cent of malicious downloads, Firefox stopping 9.92 per cent and Opera keeping out a paltry 1.87 per cent of the bad stuff. Microsoft’s advantage comes through its reputation-based URL and application protection systems, which wipe out an overwhelming majority of potentially harmful downloads. Google has a “download reputation” system, which keeps Chrome well ahead of those browsers that rely simply on its URL reputation scores to prevent malicious software being downloaded by users. Randy Abrams, Research Director at NSS Labs, said: “Both Google’s Download Protection and Microsoft’s App Rep allow users to override browser protecting, however, Google relies on this less reliable protection mechanism nearly four times as often as does Microsoft,” “The net result is that IE 10 users are offered superior protection over Chrome users with one quarter the risk of making a bad download decision. Firefox, Safari, and Opera users are afforded little protection at all by their browsers.”
A German federal court has told Google to clean up the auto-complete results its search engine suggests. The court said Google must ensure terms generated by auto-complete are not offensive or defamatory. The court case was started by an unnamed German businessman who found that Google.de linked him with “scientology” and “fraud”. Google must now remove defamatory word combinations when told about them, said the court. A person’s privacy would be violated if the associations conjured up by autocomplete were untrue, the federal court said in a statement about the ruling. However, it added, this did not mean that Google had to sanitise its entire index. “The operator is, as a basic principle, only responsible when it gets notice of the unlawful violation of personal rights,” it said. The ruling on auto-complete overturns two earlier decisions by lower German courts. In the past, Google has defended itself by arguing that it has no control over the combinations of words that autocomplete suggests. Instead, it said, these were automatically generated by the frequency with which other people were looking for such keywords. A Google spokesman said he was “disappointed and surprised” by the court’s decision, in an interview with Bloomberg. He said it was “incomprehensible” that Google was going to be held liable for the searches carried out by users. The ruling could also have a bearing on another case involving auto-complete. Bettina Wulff, wife of former German president Christian Wulff, sued Google because auto-complete suggested words linking her to escort services. Mrs Wulff denies ever working as a prostitute and has fought several legal cases over the accusation. The case against Google is due to be heard soon in a Hamburg court.

Sat-Nav Smartphones might be taking on the jobs of sat-navs for many people these
days, but Garmin is determined to prove that there’s still a place for the PND on your dashboard. So much so that it’s just announced
three new driving assistants to get you from A to B, all featuring a brand new design and larger range of screen sizes to choose from, starting at 4.3 inches and moving up to 7 inches. The 2013 nüvi range is made up of the Essential, Advances and Premium series, letting you decide the level of backseatdriver-nagging you require, and offer free Digital Traffic features and new Real Directions. As you might have guessed, the Essential Series is the budget of the three, offering the basic turn-by-turn features, spoken street names and lane assist. The Advanced Series, meanwhile,
adds some extra features to the mix including Garmin’s new Real Directions feature, which uses landmarks and other roadside features to guide you instead of just using road names. We expect it will say things like “Turn left when you see the pub” and suchlike. Active Lane Guidance is also on board, aiming to keep sweating to a minimum when driving round those hellish roundabouts. And for those who refuse anything but the best when it comes to sat-navs, the Premium Series can be the only way forward with a 5-inch multi-touch glass screen as standard and access to Garmin’s lifetime map updates for free. As expected, this range includes the whole range of features. The models are now live on the Garmin store and available to purchase. The Essential series starts at €99, while the Advanced range kicks off at €145 and the premium model (aka Prestige) currently comes in at a €320

Dawn Llewellyn-Price (Racquet or racket? I think the first, as surely mobsters run the second, but your call!) Dictionary says both. If it’s June it must be Wimbledon. Anyone for tennis? Er….no thanks. Well, at least that would have been my stock reply year after year with the one exception of one particular match many moons ago when a rather tasty European drew everyone’s attention, mine included. Ivan Goranwhatsisname had us all glued to the screens way back then, and not particularly for sporting reasons. I’ve avoided it since then. This year however, I’m curious to know what will happen. Recent events may have ensured a U- turn on my part. At a ‘posh’ church jumble sale in Barnes a few months ago, I gave in to pressure from a neighbour to ‘come and play tennis’ and spent a damn fortune on a racquet (still a ‘bat’ in my mind-set.) A whole pound changed hands and I became the owner of a rather nifty, slightly antique looking item, and with amusement sent a text to Majorca where the neighbour was draped on a poolside lounger escaping the UK winter blues. ‘Have bought a racquet, am ready to play.’ ‘Good, hope the weather improves soon so we can actually get to the (outside) court.’ It didn’t. For weeks. Then suddenly everything fell into place,-the weather was good, there were no appointments or other irritations to stop play, and off we traipsed to the rather lovely outside court alongside the beach at Langland Bay. Three weeks before my return to Spanish soil. Equipment failure was immediate. I have never been a fan of trainers, I only wear them should I damn well have to, and the one pair I own had finally been located under the guest bed, and obviously fallen foul of under floor heating. The whole fancy rubber insert beneath one fell off. It felt great actually, as it gave the shoe more bounce, but the other one was staying put.
page 28
The tennis ‘pro’ and we four ladies bounced about, then picked up the balls. It was all falling into place, except the scoring. I learned how to serve, even whack a backhand, but with my more artistic ‘bent’ there was no way all those numbers and ‘loves’ were going to sink in. ‘You should get a better racquet now you see to be getting the hang of it!’ my neighbour said. The following Saturday while initiating my niece into the art of trawling a car boot sale, I invested further;-a hefty four pounds on a modern, complete with bag ‘bat’. Five pounds investment so far. The next session was rained off half way through and we all sat in the car for ten minutes, gossiping, before a break in the clouds allowed just a few more minutes play. So I’ll be on the lookout for the following this month; anyone prepared to take on someone who doesn’t know how to ‘score’, who wears camouflage cut offs, not ‘whites’, miss-matched trainers, and who’s main concern is not breaking her nails. Or any other part of her anatomy. Anyone for tennis now? Dawn Llewellyn-Price
HEALTH ADVICE FROM CAMPOSOL PHARMACY: DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT DIABETES IS? Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin. There are several kinds. DIABETES TYPE I It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy necessary for daily life. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children with type 1 diabetes can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy and happy lives. Types of insulin: Rapid-acting insulin, such as insulin lispro, insulin aspart , or insulin glulisine,
www.thecamposoljournal.com
begins to work about 5 minutes after injection, peaks in about 1 hour, and continues to work for 2 to 4 hours. Regular or Short-acting insulin (human) usually reaches the bloodstream within 30 minutes after injection, peaks anywhere from 2 to 3 hours after injection, and is effective for approximately 3 to 6 hours. Intermediate-acting insulin (human) generally reaches the bloodstream about 2 to 4 hours after injection, peaks 4 to 12 hours later, and is effective for about 12 to 18 hours. Long-acting insulin (ultralente) reaches the bloodstream 6 to 10 hours after injection and is usually effective for 20 to 24 hours. There are also two long-acting insulin analogues: glargine and detemir. They both tend to lower glucose levels fairly evenly over a 24-hour period with less of a peak of action than ultralente. People diagnosed with type 1 diabetes usually start with two injections of insulin per day of two different types of insulin and generally progress to three or four injections per day of insulin of different types. The types of insulin used depend on their blood glucose levels. Studies have shown that three or four injections of insulin a day give the best blood glucose control and can prevent or delay the eye, kidney, and nerve damage caused by diabetes. Self Monitoring Checking your blood glucose and looking over results can help you understand how exercise, an exciting event, or different foods affect your blood glucose level. You can use it to predict and avoid low or high blood glucose levels. You can also use this information to make decisions about your insulin dose, food, and activity. DIABETES TYPE II Is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications. Most people with type 2 diabetes may need one injection per day without any diabetes pills. Some may need a single injection of insulin in the evening (at supper or bedtime) along with diabetes pills. Sometimes diabetes pills stop
2013
working, and people with type 2 diabetes will start with two injections per day of two different types of insulin. They may progress to three or four injections of insulin per day. GESTATIONAL DIABETES During pregnancy – usually around the 24th week – many women develop gestational diabetes. A diagnosis of gestational diabetes doesn’t mean that you had diabetes before you conceived, or that you will have diabetes after giving birth. But it’s important to follow your doctor’s advice regarding blood glucose (blood sugar) levels while you’re planning your pregnancy, so that you and your baby both remain healthy IATROGENIC DIABETES. Form of diabetes that develops as a side effect of treatment for a different medical problem. Also called secondary diabetes. In treatment with long terms or high levels of corticoids you can develope it. If you stop the medication you will not have iatrogenic diabetes any more. PREDIABETES Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have “pre-diabetes” — blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Recent research has shown that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during pre-diabetes. The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes. People with prediabetes often do not have symptoms. In fact, millions of people have diabetes and don’t know it because symptoms develop so gradually that people hardly recognize them. Some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms of diabetes include: Unusual thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, extreme fatigue, frequent infections, cuts/bruises that are slow to heal, tingling/numbness in the hands/feet, recurring skin, gum or bladder infections. You can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through a healthy lifestyle. Change your diet, increase your level of physical activity, maintain a healthy weight, do not smoke...with these positive steps, you can stay healthier longer and reduce your risk of diabetes. For example: A complete physical activity routine includes four kinds of activity: Activity—walking, using the stairs, moving around—throughout the day
2013
Aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming, or dancing Strength training, like lifting light weights Flexibility exercises, such as stretching Eat Smart: To cut down on the sodium in canned vegetables, drain and rinse them before heating in fresh water. You can do the same to cut down on added sugar in canned fruits or better yet, buy them packed in juice (not syrup). Try starting meals with a salad or a broth or tomato- based soup with lots of vegetables. This helps you eat more good-for-you veggies while filling you up before you get to the higher fat and calorie courses. Make healthy snack foods easy to find in your kitchen. For example, when you get home from work or school, put some fresh carrots, grapes or pretzels out on the counter instead of a bag of chips. In restaurants, ask if meats can be grilled rather than fried, and request sauces and dressings on the side. Remember to choose fruit, salad or other vegetables as side items, rather than French fries. Order a salad or soup to start and then share an entrée. Save money, and lots of calories, by skipping dessert. MEDICATION How do you know if and when you need insulin or other medications? The answer depends on which symptoms or complications you’re experiencing, your blood glucose levels, and other factors you should discuss with your healthcare team. The first treatment for type 2 diabetes blood glucose (sugar) control is often meal planning, weight loss, and exercising. Sometimes these measures are not enough to bring blood glucose levels down near the normal range. The next step is taking a medicine that lowers blood glucose levels. Diabetes pills are members of six classes of drugs that work in different ways to lower blood glucose levels: Biguanides: Metformin. Biguanides lower blood glucose levels primarily by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Metformin also helps to lower blood glucose levels by making muscle tissue more sensitive to insulin so glucose can be absorbed. It is usually taken two times a day. Sulfonylureas: Glipizide, glyburide and glimepiride.

two times a day, before meals. Meglitinides are drugs that also stimulate the beta cells to release insulin. They are taken before each of three meals. Thiazolidinediones: Rosiglitazone and pioglitazone. These drugs help insulin work better in the muscle and fat and also reduce glucose production in the liver. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors: acarbose and meglitol. These drugs help the body to lower blood glucose levels by blocking the breakdown of starches, such as bread, potatoes, and pasta in the intestine. They also slow the breakdown of some sugars, such as table sugar. Their action slows the rise in blood glucose levels after a meal. They should be taken with the first bite of a meal. DPP-4 Inhibitors: Sitagliptin and Saxagliptin. A new class of medications called DPP-4 inhibitors help improve A1C without causing hypoglycemia.. DPP-4 inhibitors do not tend to cause weight gain and tend to have a neutral or positive effect on cholesterol levels. Oral combination therapy. Because the drugs listed above act in different ways to lower blood glucose levels, they may be used together. For example, a biguanide and a sulfonylurea may be used together. Many combinations can be used. Though, taking more than one drug can be more costly and can increase the risk of side effects; combining oral medications can improve blood glucose control when taking only a single pill does not have the desired effects. Switching from one single pill to another is not as effective as adding another type of diabetes medicine. Prevention. As always the best prevention for diabetes is to consult your general practitioner (GP). If you have any of prediabetes symptoms, you must go as soon as possible. This is all for now. If you have any question about diabetes, do not hesitate and ask to Camposol pharmacy team. By Jose Luis Martínez-Lozano Martínez (pharmacist).

Summers here and the time is right for....... a barbeque Sticky chicken drumsticks
Recipes Sticky belly pork
By braising the meat first, then crisping it up quickly on the barbecue to finish, the meat stays really tender.

Sizzling spare ribs
Delicious chicken drumsticks with a sticky soy glaze that can be cooked on the grill or the barbie.
Ingredients 8 chicken drumsticks 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp tomato purée 1 tbsp Dijon mustard Method Make 3 slashes on each of the drumsticks. Mix together the soy, honey, oil, tomato purée and mustard. Pour this mixture over the chicken and coat thoroughly. Leave to marinate for 30 mins at room temperature or overnight in the fridge. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/ gas 6. Tip the chicken into a shallow roasting tray and cook for 35 mins, turning occasionally, until the chicken is tender and glistening with the marinade. This marinade is also delicious with pork. Try marinating spare ribs and slow-roasting them until the meat is sticky and falling off the bone.
Ingredients 1.6kg pork belly 3 tbsp light muscovado sugar 3 tbsp treacle 3 tbsp tomato purée 1 onion , whizzed in a food processor 3 garlic cloves , crushed 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tsp crushed dried chillies 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp allspice Method Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2, then sit the pork belly in a deep roasting dish. Mix the remaining ingredients with 1 tsp salt, then rub all over the pork. Cover, roast for 3 hrs, then uncover, slice the pork into 16 short, fat chops. Spoon over the sauce from the dish, then roast, uncovered, for another hour, turning the strips halfway. Cool, cover, then chill for up to 24 hours. About 15 mins before you are ready to barbecue, pop the pork into a low oven to melt the sauce making sure the strips are nicely coated in it. Barbecue, skinside down first, to crisp up, then cook for just a few mins, turning, until heated through and the
Ingredients 4 x 500g packs pork spare ribs 1 bunch of spring onions , roughly chopped (green stems and all) 1 Scotch bonnet chilli , seeded and finely chopped 4 garlic cloves , roughly chopped 6 tbsp Appleton rum 6 tbsp demerara sugar 6 tbsp dark soy sauce 6 tbsp clear honey 6 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp ground allspice Method Tip the ribs into a big bowl (not a metal one) and throw in the spring onions, chilli and garlic. Now spoon all the remaining ingredients over the ribs and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Get your hands in the bowl and turn the ribs over and over again until they’re coated in the sauce. (You can keep the ribs uncooked - tightly covered - in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them for several months.) Cook the ribs over a moderate barbecue for 20-30 minutes depending on their size, turning them over frequently and brushing with sauce each time. The turning and brushing is important, so that all four sides of each rib get encrusted with the sauce, which builds up like a lacquer. If you have any leftover sauce at the end, heat it up in a pan and pour it over the ribs just before serving.

The maintenance team and Wednesday volunteers continued the clearing of dirt and debris after the heavy rains, and hopefully we have now seen the back of these and the usual settled weather is on the way! This has enabled the street spraying and weeding programme to continue. Yet more potholes have been filled and the Petanca court on Calle Ibiscum has been restored for Summer action! The corner of the dual carriageway and Calle Castillo Mayorazgo has also been cleared by our volunteer team and a pretty little windmill was commissioned by us from a local dry stone wall craftsman, Jason the Mason. A special mention must go to those who have also taken the time to ‘adopt’ a small area near their homes by planting, watering and weeding; they all look beautiful! It’s these displays which
make ‘C’ such a pleasant place to live and spend a holiday. If any of our residents/ holiday home owners would like to help in this way, we would be extremely grateful, and so would the plants (!). Donations of your unwanted plants and broken pots are always appreciated, too; these can be left behind the Welcome wall or call us for collection.
The ‘Welcome to C’ Jubilee garden is becoming established due to hard work and watering, despite a few plants being ‘removed’ by opportunists: please keep vigilant on our behalf and report any thieves to us? C Sector has so many kind people who give their time, donations of both money and plants, snacks and drinks for the workers… it’s a shame to know this generosity is being taken advantage of by a few. If you would like to join our volunteer team on Wednesday mornings, or to help us in any other way and meet new friends, just get in touch via phone or email; We offer the bribe of a free breakfast and the satisfaction of knowing you are keeping fit while making a huge difference to the local area – Each time visitors return here, they notice how lovely the improvements are and always let us know as they pass! I suppose we should start with “A good time was had by all “ This is in reference to the excellent fund raising gathering at “ Casa Beryl “of course the problem with this sort of BBQ, party, is the limited number of people you can have there. Never the less the effort put in by several group members, including, Beryl, who hosted the day and Paul, the cook, sorry Chef, helped make this a very successful day so there are more events being planned. Regarding the group’s efforts to become an association, we started the ball rolling when the Chairman, Edward Roberts, with the secretary,
Joce Grant and treasurer, Beryl Holland, had a meeting with the solicitor in Mazarron. It was decided at the, AGM, that the group would be renamed,” The Los Palacios Garden and social Group “. Please remember this is your association, looking after your part of Camposol, so don’t adopt the attitude of let someone else do it.
Evergreen
On the garden front, an extensive program of Palm tree dressing is in progress to remove the dead Fronds and get rid of them. This in its self creates another problem, how to get the dead frond’s to our green bins. So if you have a trailer you can help solve this problem, remember this task is only done once a year. This is one of the jobs that
make a big visual difference. We have a very impressive design for our entrance signs to LOS PALACIOS, but we cannot progress until we get permission from the town hall. The wheels do not grind slow, they don’t grind at all. And finally, an update on our Weed eradication team, it’s good news and bad news, good news. We have six new volunteers, bad news, still not enough. Remember, Keep fit and make friends. Sounds like a garden group to me! Chairman Edward Roberts.

Not so happy with the OM!
The best foot forward meditation Again not a big deal to admit it that for some of us it is hard to meditate – legs in lotus, back stick straight, Mudra fingers on knees …. come on! Especially if we have a bout of Sciatica flaring up or a fly or mosquito buzzing around the ear! So here is another angle into meditation – The walking Meditation. As in traditional practice the key is mindfulness (Awareness).
Okay, so we were not so convinced about Meditation. Some of you commented that just the thought of sitting cross-legged or sitting still was enough to make you anxious. So in response to your emails maybe you would like to try these other ways to calm down or clear your chattering minds. Be open about it; you have nothing to lose by giving something a try. The brain is a huge muscle that needs to be worked just like any other. And as with any other muscle that is constantly working in only one direction, it leads to tiredness and fatigue! Trying to encourage the muscle to work in another direction needs practice and patience. Just like learning to play a musical instrument, trying out a new recipe or learning another language. Be patient. The Naming Meditation Angry? Attach the phrase “this is anger” to every angry thought that arrives. Anxious? As you feel anxious thoughts start telling yourself “this is anxiety”. Over twenty five hundred years ago the Buddha taught that if we label our experiences (thoughts) as they arrive we can manage our emotions better: Science is almost catching up as research at UCLA monitored people and labeled their brains’ activity. What they found was that there was more activity in the ventrolateral, pre frontal cortex, the part of the brain that processes emotion and inhibits behaviour and less activity in the amygdale, which is

Walk slowly focusing on breathing, staying present and your attention inwards. Be aware of your foot, the ground, and the connection between the foot and the ground the whole time. There are distractions but keep coming back to your steps. Meditation with music The mystic poet Kabir said “Music without words means leaving behind the mind. Leaving behind the mind is Meditation. Meditation returns you to the source, and the source of all is sound”
increases the heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure. Then choose a slow song (like Beethoven’s ´Moonlight´ Sonata) all of which can be found on youtube.com. As I said before you can choose your own music as long as one has a fast tempo and then the second has a slow. Also try not to choose tunes that have emotional ties!!! (Queens powerful, fast slow “Bohemian Rhapsody” does this all in one song!) The crucial part happens in between songs (or tempos). Which is when you listen to two minutes of silence. So you are looking for a release that comes from playing first of all your fast tempo track then waiting in silence for two minutes before you then listen to your piece of music or song that has a slow tempo. The release you get from going from intensely fast to dramatically slow, with silence in between is similar to that achieved in transcendental meditation. It has been found that it is a more profound relaxation than when listening to even the slowest of music. Give it a try. Loofah Meditation You only have ten minutes but it is to be enjoyed and for me this shower time meditation never fails to give the results I need. Breathe in the freshness of your shampoo, shower gel and breathe out all the tensions of the day. Observe every detail present not attached.
Recent studies at the Pavia University confirms this … Try the following experiments, I have put two examples of music but you can place whatever music you prefer providing one follows a fast tempo and the other a slow tempo. First of all listen to any song with a fast tempo (say Taylor Swifts ´Red´ or Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot). Fast tempo music focuses our attentions and

Health &Wellbeing Feel the warm pulsing spray on your back. Listen to the water run and watch the drops of water that race another down the glass or tiles. Imagine your thoughts slipping away with them. This is I think is by far the best way to shed stale, impure emotions along with old skin cells! Take a hot or warm shower and then before finishing slowly lower the temperature to cold.... even for just ten seconds. The shock I think is more invigorating than painful. And we all need help in gracefully meeting the shocks that life provides. You will step out cleaner and clearer. I have not written too many details on each type of alternative mediation, however, give them a try and see what works for you.You can always email me if you have any questions. lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASEPREVENTION IS ALWAYS PREFERABLE TO TREATMENT. DO YOU WANT TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE EFFECTS OF ALZHEIMER’S? STUDIES SUGGEST YOU SHOULD LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE. We all age, whether we like it or not, and most of the associated physical changes have solutions. These might not be permanent cures but they are options that can mask or compensate for the
often unwanted transformations brought on by aging. Hence the frequently used expression ‘to grow old gracefully’.
equipping it to fight off memory loss.
For instance, we can take vitamins, do regular exercise, wear glasses or have laser eye surgery, replace our teeth, have cosmetic enhancements, dye our hair and the list goes on. However, what can we do about memory loss and dementia? Well, studies suggest that we can learn another language. There is no cure for this terrible disease but research shows that bilingual people do not suffer from Alzheimer’s in the same way as those who only speak one language. The studies have also found that we don’t have to be bilingual from an early age to enjoy these benefits. Learning a foreign language later in life uses exactly the same brain functions and therefore awards the same protection. So, why does learning a new language help? In order to learn a new language we have to exercise a network in the brain called the executive control system much more than if we are only using one language. Exercising this area of our brains has been proved to increase our ability to cope with diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Along the same lines that physical exercise helps keep our hearts healthy, learning a new language exercises our brains. Regular language classes can help your brain stay fit and healthy,
This does not mean that language lessons are a substitute for professional medical care nor are they a cure for Alzheimer’s. Rather, in the same way that regular physical exercise and lifestyle changes can lower blood pressure (reducing the reliance on medication and associated complications) so can learning a new language keep your brain healthy hence preserving its memory functions. It is never too late, or too early, to start learning Spanish. Asides from the obvious health benefits of keeping your brain fit and healthy it will also allow you to enjoy a much more enriched life here in Spain. So decide to learn Spanish today and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Commit to fighting off memory loss and feel good in the knowledge that you are taking proactive steps to safeguard your health. By Totana English Academy 618182918

Sports The April gathering was once again at the Corvera Golf & Country Club, as several other courses have become unavailable or showing signs of lack of water. The day started out with the distribution of the new polo shirts emblazoned with the club logo, which went down well with the exception of a couple of the wives who felt that white was not the best colour for keeping clean. Are we men really that messy?? (Answers on a postcard please) Our thanks go to Danny at Insignia for the artwork and supply of the polo’s. The skies were bright and not too much breeze at the start, but as the round went on the wind got up and created a few wayward shots. Fortunately this time no-one decided to paddle in the water collecting wayward

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron’s form continued to improve in the latter stages of the season. With three wins, two draws and only one defeat between mid March and mid May, the team cemented their position in the middle of the table with just three games remaining.
Although hopes were high back in September for a promotion push, a dreadful start to the season in which only two points were obtained from the first six games made this an unrealistic prospect. The return of youngsters Jose Da and Diego junior in recent weeks has improved both the quality and performances of the team which was highlighted with a 1-1 draw to the runaway league champions Yeclano Deportivo and an 8-2 thrashing of lowly Cieza. balls. There was once again strong competition for the top spot, with several players scoring in the high thirties, but the overall winner was Dave Bennett who
Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Full details of all games, both home and away, are announced on the Tuesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on our website www.losamigosdemazarron.es and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron.
Saturday 8th June HOLBROOK SPORTS (Friendly) (HOME) The friendly game on 8th June sees the visit of Holbrook Sports F.C. of the English East Midlands Counties League. The game which will be played as usual at the Estadio Municipal has a 5 pm kick off. Holbrook are staying in Mazarron for their end of season trip and their players and officials will also be attending the Mazarron FC end of Season Player of the Year Dinner organised by Los Amigos de Mazarron FC. This year’s event is to be held at Mariano’s Bar & Restaurant, Camposol, on Saturday 8th June at 8pm, following the game. In addition to the usual Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year Trophies, there will also be presentations
The strength in depth of the squad has improved considerably and it is to be hoped that many of the players will stay with the club for next season. If this is the case, there is a great chance that a promotion bid could be launched in 2013-14.

The southern Spanish city of Malaga opened a centre to develop electric cars in a project backed by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi and Spanish utility Endesa.
The local TV channel, FTV, who are supporting the project, will be using two electric vehicles which are expected to save €2,500 per year on fuel. There will also be a charging point at the television station’s headquarters.
The research centre, installed in a former tobacco factory, is part of a pilot project with a budget of 60 million euros ($78 million) “aimed at achieving mass access to e-mobility,” Endesa said in a statement. Malaga, a port city of just over half a million people, will serve as en experiment to study the impact of the the use of electric vehicles on the city and determine what would be needed to develop the widespread use of this type of car, the company added. Electric cars have been made available to the 160 people involved in the project, while 229 charging points have been installed in city, mainly at homes and workplaces of participants. “The use of electric vehicles in Malaga will provide comprehensive information on the impact of these vehicles, and the requirements for a large-scale implementation of electric vehicles in society,” the statement said. Spanish car sales rose in April 2013 Car sales rose in Spain by almost 11 per cent last month, following seven months running of falling figures. Almost 62,320 new cars were sold, which is 10.8 per cent more than the previous month, according to the manufacturers, sellers and dealers associations. They say this is thanks to the fact that there were two more working days this April than in the same month last year, and the government’s Plan PIVE 2 scheme which offers aids to purchase new cars. So far this year, 243,042 vehicles have been sold in Spain, which is 6.7 per cent fewer than over the same period in 2012. Most of the vehicles sold in April were purchased by private citizens, amounting to 30,644, which is 25.9 per cent more than last month, while rental companies also increased purchases by

Rounding out the top five were “I’m lost and unfamiliar with the roads”; “I didn’t know it [taillight, etc.] was broken”; “Everyone else was doing it”; and “I’m having an emergency,” reports the Car Connection. Surveyors also broke down responses by gender, and found those top three excuses were used by women more often than men at a ratio of roughly two-to-one. Excuses four and five were more popular among male drivers. Insurance.com points out women seemed to favour excuses that explained the situation away as an honest mistake; while men favoured excuses that put the blame on someone or something else. The top 11 excuses, in order, were: 1. I couldn’t see the sign telling me not to do it. (Used by men 38 percent of the time, and women 62 percent) 2. I’m lost and unfamiliar with the roads. Property, Financial and Legal WHAT’S NEW IN THE LAW ! WILL THIS BE A HELP OR A HINDRANCE FOR PROPERTY OWNERS?? The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) introduced in the UK in 2008 as part of the now abandoned Home Information Packs is set to become a requirement in Spain. Here, the EPC will be known as the Certificado de Eficiencia Energetica!! (CEE) and like the UK’s EPC will be valid for ten years. From 1 June 2013, if you want to sell your home in Spain you will be required to acquire your CEE before it is advertised. For properties already on the market, the seller is allowed seven days to prove he has applied for the certificate and he will have 21 days to obtain the CEE. The test measures the efficiency of the property as a whole, and the report provides pointers to how you could make your property more energy efficient. Many Spanish properties are designed to be cool in the blazing heat of summer, but as many of us will have noticed, they are not so great in the winter, when the
cold wind blows.
double glazing.
An excellent energy efficiency rating could be a significant plus when you come to sell, just as a poor rating might hinder a sale.
Your local professional estate agent will by now undoubtedly be up to speed on all the new requirements and will be aware that notaries are obliged to request the CEE when signing over the property.
All estate agents will be required to show the new CEE rating on the property particulars and their websites. Failure to obtain the new CEE could result in a fine for the seller and the estate agent – from 3,000 to 600,000 euros potentially!
So if you are thinking of selling, or even just renting out, your property, it is probably a good idea to make a start now as we can expect something of a rush as the date of June 1 approaches.
Any sales contract that is agreed without the CEE runs the risk of being declared void at some future date, and a purchaser could potentially seek compensation.
If you need advice regarding the sale or a purchase of property, and want to be sure you have the right person to guide you through the property maze, I am happy to assist.
Rental properties are equally affected by the new rating. A certificate is required for any letting that will use up at least 25 per cent of the property’s annual energy consumption – bear in mind that is consumption, NOT the amount of time that the property is let.

Property Market Update The start to 2013 has seen a significant rise in the number of property transactions. At mercers we saw a 25% increase (year on year) in buyers for the 1st quarter. Interestingly the official Murcian government figures show a 24.7% increase. April has so far been our best month this year with an unprecedented 15 sales! These sales where across the whole price spectrum but what is apparent is that buyers still expect to pick up a bargain. Has the market finally turned? I don’t think there is a fully fledged resurgence but there are encouraging signs that buyers are realising that if they want to pick up a property at prices that are 55% below the market high, now is the time to do so. Another encouraging sign is that we are seeing more UK buyers. The UK
economy does seem to be on the mend and confidence is certainly creeping back into the market and this is having a positive knock on effect. Most buyers are now aware that finance (for resale properties) via Spanish banks is just about non-existent and they are sourcing finance in their home countries. This is actually helping the market, as the buyers that are in a position to proceed, have normally sourced their funding and are serious and in a position to go ahead fairly quickly, should their offer be accepted. This means that the time from having an offer accepted to a completion can be as quick as few weeks with an average timescale of 6 weeks. The signs are good for the local property market and as and when work starts on the new Paramount Theme park, this will only add fuel to the desirability of the local market and help to increase demand, which ultimately will lead to enhanced property values. Chris Mercer
Bank Deposits of over 100,000€ should be guaranteed Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos has proposed that Europe should provide protection for deposits of more than 100,000 euros in the event of bank failures, arguing that the current guarantee limit of 100,000 euros is “artificial.” Speaking to reporters in Brussels after a meeting of European finance and economy ministers, De Guindos said that guaranteeing bank deposits of 100,000 euros or less is not in doubt, but that there are moves to reach agreement providing protection for amounts of over
Property, Financial and Legal 100,000 euros as well, in the case of exceptional circumstances and based on very strict rules. “We have to send a very clear message: that deposits are adequately protected,” De Guindos said. De Guindos also called for the introduction of the idea of shareholders and creditors sharing some of the burden for bank rescues to be delayed to 2018 as opposed to 2015, as proposed by some EU members, who want depositors with more than 100,000 euros to accept some of the pain of bank bailouts. De Guindos said a common system of guaranteeing bank deposits was a key aspect in the creation of a European banking union. Separately, De Guindos said Spain booked a trade surplus for the first time on record in March of around 600 million euros. “Spain had never had, since records began, a monthly trade surplus,” Bloomberg quoted De Guindos as saying. “This shows how exports have improved and that they are the main driver of Spain’s recovery and of the transformation of the economy.”
Inditex and H&M head up retailers pact for Bangladesh Factories The world’s two largest fashion retailers, Sweden’s H&M and Spain’s Inditex, have announced a pact to improve labor conditions in their factories to prevent a repeat of the building collapse in Bangladesh that claimed the lives of 1,127 people. Among the proposals are a coordinated system of inspections, the results of which will be made public; greater rights for workers; and a financial commitment from retailers to improve conditions in factories in Bangladesh, the world’s biggest exporter of clothes. “We hope for a broad coalition of signatures in order for the agreement to work effectively on the ground,” H&M said in a statement. Inditex founder Amancio Ortega has also pledged to support the pact, the final draft of which will be published on Wednesday. “The accord has not come out yet, but as you know we have played a very active part in its
development,” said a spokesman for the company, which includes the Zara chain. Six percent of Inditex’s clothing was exported from Bangladesh last year, where factory workers earn the lowest minimum wage anywhere on the planet at 29 euros a month. The Bangladesh government has elected to close around 100 businesses in an attempt to calm street protests in Dhaka after the Rana Plaza factory disaster. The latest tragedy is the worst industrial accident since the 1984 gas leak at the Union Carbide India Limited plant in Bhopal, which killed thousands of people. Last November in Bangladesh a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory in Dhaka cost the lives of 117 workers.

PALS EVENTS 2013 Well, what a month this has been! First of all, our lovely Heidi has now had both her injections and is rapidly improving - such a delight to see her looking so much better and gaining in weight, happiness and confidence! She will have a blood test in a few months to see how the Leishmania readings are after this miracle treatment, and we will continue to update you on her progress. Two of Truffle’s piglets have been reserved for Tracy of Euronics in Camposol B shopping area. Still 2 more available if anyone can offer them a loving home - please get in touch with Andrea on the above phone number. Our biggest news this month concerns the sad case of a very neglected young donkey whom Andrea has named Charlie-boy. He was in a horrendous state, hooves very overgrown, full of fleas and emaciated. We weren’t sure if he could be helped, but joy of joys, the hospital in Alicante have operated on his hooves, given him special shoes to wear, and have also shaved all that matted, flea-ridden fur off! He is looking so much better, we hope he is feeling better too! We are having an on-line auction at the moment to help pay for his treatment (a cost of €1800 so far…) so any item or monetary donations would be gratefully received! Our PayPal address is below, and details of the auction are on our Facebook page - hope to see you there!!
To remind you we are at SaraLaras on a Wednesday afternoon 1 till 3 or Saturday morning at the Trevi from 11 till 1.30 or call me on 626 460 465.
Some unusual animals have arrived into our care this month: A beautiful 6 week old baby fox (vixen) was rescued from a swimming pool by Karen Spittle and is at the moment being fostered till we can find a suitable sanctuary for her to go to. If anyone knows of one please let us know - the nearest we have found so far is in Valencia. She can’t be released back into the wild as she has very little in the way of teeth at the moment, and would very quickly be killed.
EVERY SATURDAY – BOOK SALE - The Arches Restaurant, Los Alcázares - 10.00 am - 1.00 pm (weather permitting) The MABS Book Stall is a regular feature at The Arches Restaurant on a Saturday and is popular with book-lovers from Los Alcázares and the surrounding areas. Browse the stall and enjoy a coffee or bargain breakfast while you choose your books.
Four gorgeous little chicks were found motherless and are being fostered by Susan Smith. Apparently they are red legged partridge chicks and will be released as soon as they can fend for themselves. The nameless bundle of fur was delivered safely to his new family down near Malaga. We (reluctantly) handed him over at a service station in Baza, and picked another stray up while we were there!! He is a lovely corgi-cross (we think), a tiny little man, such a sweetheart, always smiling, and we have called him Baza!! He is now bathed, de-parasited, chipped, castrated and vaccinated, and is available for adoption; please contact Andrea.

First Thatcher dies, then Ferguson retires. Somewhere, there is a Scouser with a lamp and one wish left. With the news of Sir Alex Fergusons retirement, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City are in a bidding war to sign Howard Webb In honour of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, all Premiership matches will play an extra 2 minutes injury time this weekend. Alex Ferguson retiring... ...referees up and down the land will be worrying about their mortgages. Howard Webb has just announced that Sir Alex Ferguson was the greatest manager he ever played for. So Sir Alex Ferguson has announced he will retire from management come the end of May. Or with added time October. Ryan Giggs is said to have ruled himself out of succeeding Alex Ferguson as he wants to spend more time with his brothers family. Apparently Alex Ferguson received a red card in the tunnel from today’s referee Howard Webb. It said ‘Happy Valentines day’ on the front.
Thank God for the church ladies with typewriters.. These sentences actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services: The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water. ‘The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus..’ Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Don’t let worry kill you off - let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again,’ giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be try-outs for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be ‘What Is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered... The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Pot-luck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM . Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM .. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. Martin Sallu Plastics
