JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Bumper World Cup Edition of The Journal! As you have probably guessed by the front cover, this month’s edition will be focusing on the most important event of the year- the imminent 2014 World Cup in Brazil. On the centre pages we have a tremendous World Cup Match Guide pull out sponsored by TJ Electricals Camposol. In it you will find all the match dates and Spanish kick off times. We have a full list of the England Squad, World Cup Word search and Jokes and even an article in our Technology section about the development of the new Nike World Cup football boots! The local bars are ready for the big event and with the area being unseasonably busy for the time of year it should be a welcome boost to the local economy! The Black Bull on Camposol B Sector have already pledged to show EVERY world cup game. England kick off their world cup campaign on Saturday the 14th of June and down at the Black Bull they will be ready to party. They have entertainment to begin, followed by a midnight BBQ as England take on Italy! If you are not a football fan, or Scottish like me and your team did not make it to the world cup then don’t worry. This month’s magazine has the usual abundance of articles and information for you to enjoy. This month the “Anonymous Resident” re-joins us and puts his/her perspective on dog ownership in the area. The article was originally published on our Blog and received a mixed response. It seems dog’s ownership will continue to be a divisive point in our community. Don’t forget to check out Dawn Llewellyn Price´s Column and also this month’s article by the Camposol Pharmacy. Lastly I would like to thank all our new advertisers for choosing The Journal to promote their business and also once again thank each and every one of our loyal readers who make this magazine possible. Have a great June, enjoy the magazine, enjoy the World Cup and enjoy the sunshine. See you next month, Robert Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

And You Thought Britain’s Roads Were Bad The president of the Spanish Road Association (AEC) on Friday spoke in nearly apocalyptic terms about the terrible state of Spain’s national and regional road network. “Spanish roads are facing unprecedented deterioration, and only a sudden change of tack in the 2015 budget can prevent a debacle,” said Juan Francisco Lazcano at the presentation of a report drafted by his association. The conclusions of the Study on investment needs in [road] maintenance are dire. According to the report, the situation of Spain’s roads are “the worst” since 1985, when the association conducted its first study. “The state of maintenance is deficient, borderline very deficient,” notes the report. By extrapolating the conditions found on the 3,000 road sections that were analyzed, the advocacy group concluded that it is necessary to replace 330,000 road signs, repaint road surface markings along 52,000 kilometers of thoroughfares and review 82% of roadway lights. Metal barriers get a failing grade, while the state of road beacons dropped from “good” to “acceptable.” But the deterioration is much more noticeable on the pavement, where 1 out of every 4km has cracks and 1 of every 3km has potholes and other surface deformations. “Turning this situation around requires an investment of €6.2 billion, of which 94% must go toward pavement repair,” warned Lazcano. In 2011, the AEC president noted, road investment was €5.5 billion, but the 2014 national budget indicates that only €878 million has been earmarked for the management and maintenance of state-run roads, fully 30% less than in 2009. The association warns about the serious consequences of pavement deterioration for road safety, and insists that the cost of repairs grows exponentially with

every passing year. “Every euro that is not invested in time on pavement maintenance becomes €5 3 years later, and €25 by the fifth year,” Lazcano warned. The solution, he says, is “an urgent plan” to fix the roads. Meanwhile, the head of the DGT traffic authority, María Seguí, alerted the media about the fact that around 2 million vehicles are being driven on Spain’s roads without a current Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) sticker. Seguí said she was very concerned about this lack of regular checkups and the fact that the average age of the cars on the road in Spain is creeping up. “So far this year, the average age of vehicles that were involved in an accident is higher than last year,” she warned.

England Squad World Cup 2014

It seems that there has been a partial changing of the guard in England’s 2014 World Cup squad, as a few veterans have failed to make manager Roy Hodgson’s 23-man roster for the tournament. Ashley Cole does not feature, as he announced his retirement from international football yesterday. Michael Carrick, Gareth Barry and other veterans also don’t feature. From the outset, it was known that there were many players from the 2010 squad that would not feature here - such as retired goalkeeper David James, the A-League’s own Emile Heskey and others, such as Matthew Upson and Joe Cole. Elder statesman: Frank Lampard is the

oldest member of the squad, at 35. He will turn 36 during the tournament. But the most high-profile discard will be Chelsea left-back Cole, who started every game in the 2010 tournament and has been a stalwart of the England setup for 13 years, amassing 107 caps. Carrick and Barry, who have 31 and 53 caps respectively, are among the older generation who have missed out on selection. Two of England’s elder statesmen Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard remain, and will be the oldest members of the touring party. In-demand 18-year-old Southampton left-back Luke Shaw is not necessarily a shock selection, but many had predicted Cole’s experience to be preferred as the backup to Leighton Baines, who will be the first choice left-back on Roy Hodgson’s team sheet. Gerrard will skipper the squad, on the back of a superb season for his beloved Liverpool. The squad: Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Fraser Forster (Celtic) Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Man Utd) Midfielders Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) – captain, Ross Barkley (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) Strikers Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United) Stand by squad: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (West Ham United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Jon Flanagan (Liverpool), John Ruddy (Norwich City), John Stones (Everton)

The Camposol & District Independent Party. As readers of The Journal may be aware a group of us have been working over the last couple of years to form a political party based in Camposol and the surrounding area. We did this because it was felt that Camposol and its environs have been ignored and treated with distain by the Town Hall. All the promises made by the various parties in the Town Hall have been reneged on down the years. The current situation regarding street lighting on Camposol says it all! Our working party calculated that in IBI tax over the last ten years Camposol alone has contributed approximately 15 million euros to the Council`s coffers. Furthermore, of course, we have all contributed to the local economy through our spending patterns. In return we have received almost nothing which is why Camposol in particular continues to deteriorate and the value of our properties goes down. This position has to change and the only way this can be done is to have our own Councilors insitu at the Town Hall.

2014

In the last week of April we received the news from the Ministry of the Interior in Madrid that the Camposol & District Independent Party has been approved and accordingly we now have a political party of our own. Of course, we must now persuade local people to vote for us and this will be our task during the coming year in the lead up to the local elections in May 2015. Dr Peter Pitt Chairman CDIP. Dr Robert Mooney Vice-Chairman CDIP Pilar Garcia President CDIP

Britain’s Sharks face “Wall of Death” Spanish and Portuguese fishing fleets are wiping out Britain’s shark populations with a ‘wall of death’. The two countries are killing up to four million sharks each year in the north Atlantic, mostly to satisfy the Far East’s demand for shark fin soup. Scientists have discovered the use of 60 mile-long fishing lines, bristling with baited hooks to target British sharks. The lines are laid across the routes taken by blue and mako sharks – the

main targets – as they migrate in and out of British waters. The discovery, made by researchers at the Plymouth-based Marine Biological Association (MBA), could explain why UK shark populations are plummeting. David Sims, professor of marine ecology at the MBA, explained that the team compared the movements of sharks with the movements of the nearly 200 Spanish and Portuguese fishing boats. “We found that the sharks are congregating where warm and cool currents meet. These are highly productive areas that attract fish – and that attracts sharks too,” said Sims. “However, it also attracts fishing vessels and we found many longlines laid in exactly the places where sharks concentrate. It is a wall of death for sharks.” What emerged is that fisherman are effectively following sharks around the ocean, laying the deadly longlines wherever they congregate. The study plays a vital role in discovering the impact of unregulated commercial shark fishing, which currently wipes out 100 million sharks globally each year. The life cycle of sharks makes them hugely vulnerable to overfishing and population collapse, as they reach maturity late and produce very few young. Sims added: “These are awe-inspiring animals but it is open-season on sharks. We should hit the panic button right now rather than in 10 years’ time when it could be too late.

We met at La Santa Monastry for coffee and then the group headed uphill in the general direction of Aledo. The scenery was stunning and the friendly conversations as we walked

HAVE HAPPY IRONING DAYS – Hazard Or What? I would normally write about various furniture ideas etc, but this month I am voicing a warning about what can happen with water on floor tiles. A subject we all know about, which does not mean we don’t make judgements in error or is it called senior error moments or just blonde moments. I have always been careful over the last ten years regarding water on floor tiles, I never thought while ironing I could come a cropper, never even crossed my mind. On a Sunday 3 months ago I was happy as to be expected ironing away, using the

2014

steam button etc and refilling the iron with water, when I turned round for yet another garment to iron when I found myself on the floor in a screwed up heap. I say found myself on the floor because I never had the excitement or the thrill of falling or trying to save myself. At least the iron did not follow me and hit me on the head and ironing board was good too and stayed put. So from a little bit of water the damage was done and my life changed –not for the better I might add. As I was busy trying to untangle my arms and legs into some normal positions my husband Roy came in and could not think where I had gone, never thought of looking on the floor, why would he? I had not been drinking either, if I had I might not have hurt myself so much.

dangerous water is on tiled floors. Remember the dog water bowls, I have always put mine on a mat, not the dogs, just their water bowls. Even so some dogs do slurp and drip water in all directions, so take care. Be careful around your swimming pools, in your kitchens and in bathrooms and showers etc. If building new terraces or pool surrounds etc use nonslip tiles and in the shower areas. Might cost a little more but well worth it. Wishing you all a safe and a slip free summer with all your family and friends. Written by Chris of Furniture Plus from her wheel chair friendly showroom.

So this small amount of water (which I could hardly see) left me with 2 breaks in my ankle, ligament and muscle damage, it’s getting better now but I’m still not able to drive or walk without crutches. In my wheel chair I have learnt to do wheelies around our showroom, 3 point turns and the reversing is improving by the day, won’t even go to what happens with the emergency stops. So please learn from my error of judgement, warn your friends, remind your families when they visit just how

Progress on the dual carriageway running through ‘D’ sector down to the Golf Club roundabout is going well and will shortly be completed. It will be left in a tidy manner with all the pipes hidden under the gravel. Our regular Friday working parties have been doing the best they can to maintain ‘D’ sector, but the lack of volunteers is making this more and more difficult. The volunteer situation was discussed at our meeting on the 5th May and it was suggested a change of day may be more convenient. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www. eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest.

What a load of C....!!!

Without a doubt over the last eight or nine years the number of residents living on Camposol has gradually been declining whilst at the same time the number of dogs to be seen is on the increase. It appears that the majority of full time residents feel that they cannot survive without a dog, for whatever reason, with others happy to have sometimes 4 or 5 living with them. At times you could be excused for thinking that you had been transported to the set of “The Hounds of the Baskervilles” as once one dogs starts howling and barking it gradually spreads across the urbanisation. Even worse is the owner who leaves their dog shut up inside whilst they head out shopping or to the bar and as soon as the car draws off the howling and barking starts. Only to end abruptly as the owners car turns in to the street with the owner oblivious to the misery that Inversiones Rustisol

their mutt(s) has put the neighbors through. I have given up on the idea of going for a quiet evening walk as my heart will no longer put up with the shock of a baying dog(s) with teeth showing and saliva dripping trying to rip its way through the gate and attempt to tear me to pieces. This is normally followed by someone shouting out “don’t worry he wouldn’t hurt a fly”. At least in the area I live I must commend dog owners who mostly clear up after their dogs feel it necessary to crap on the foot path or in the road. But this hasn’t resolved another problem. After giving up on a quiet stroll through the estate because of a faltering heart, I decided to head out in to the campo for a change. The first thing that struck me was the heady smell in the air. Not the smell of the up-wind pig farm or that of

the broken sewage pipes on upper C Sector but the smell of dog crap. As I strolled along the well worn path it soon became evident where this smell was coming from. On looking down every few feet there was a pile of dog crap and as I looked across in to the campo there was more and more to be seen. Of course there is no dog crap on the streets as owners now take their dogs in to the campo and let them do their business wherever they feel the need. No need to clean it up as who is there to have a go at them!

A few days later I spoke with the father of two teenagers who will not allow his kids in to the campo to play as they invariably come back with their shoes covered in crap with all the health issues this potentially brings. He told me that he now prefers to allow the kids to play in the street and put up with a constant winge from a neighbor who thinks kids shouldn’t be allowed on Camposol. Interesting, as the neighbor is happy to have three dogs in his small two bedroom terrace villa!! I had a conversation recently with a volunteer from one of the larger dog charities which gave me a insight in to the influx of dogs on Camposol. He told me that currently they had close to 80 stray dogs in their pound and were making space available for a further 10. The problem apparently arises from the Spanish (and in some cases Ex pats) who know of the dog charity and regularly dump their unwanted pets in the local area knowing that they will be cared for. I don’t dislike dogs. I dislike people who take on a dog without thinking through the consequences of their actions. That

it and those that then take these dogs on when they are disposed of and then impose the resulting behavior on their neighbors. This problem, is I’m afraid, escalating out of control on Camposol and for many is becoming an unacceptable imposition on their everyday lives. The time is now here to either ban all dogs from Camposol or at a minimum action allow a maximum of one per household. To those that donate to the animal charities I would suggest that your money would be better used given to MABS, FAST or PALS.

Technology Tablets and other touchscreens will keep your kids quiet. But will they also melt their brains?

Children today are surrounded by screen upon screen upon screen: second screens, third screens,

screens on our wrists and even our faces. It’s not uncommon to have one in every room. Screen time—especially if you’re talking about touchscreens—is a perplexing issue all modern parents have to confront. The American Academy of Pediatrics is unequivocal: If your kid is under 2, no screens. For

older kids, two hours a day, max. But the AAP doesn’t differentiate between activities; education apps, basejumping videos, first-person shooters, ebooks, Sesame Street, and The Shining are all thrown into the same bucket. It’s all just screen time. Trouble is, they’re not all the same. An app that teaches your kid his ABCs isn’t the same as a television cartoon, but the AAP is probably right to be conservative with its advice. “Researchers know almost

nothing about the impact of touchscreen technology on young children,” says Heather Kirkorian, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at the University of WisconsinMadison who is trying to find some answers. “Our society is running a large-scale experiment with real children in the real world, and we won’t know the impact, if any, for many years to come.” Comforting! All the more so because keeping kids away from touchscreens these days is harder than keeping them away from sweets. The screens have become one of our cultural platforms—the modern agora where we get our music, movies, books, social interactions, games, and even education. We’ve made touchscreens joyous. They are so wonderfully intuitive that even the smallest children—and pets!—can navigate them. They transcend language, and who hasn’t seen children fluent in the iOS interface before they can speak? According to the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a research lab that focuses on children’s education and new media forms, nearly two-thirds of 2- to 10year-olds in the US have access to a tablet or e-reader. But the ever-present touchscreens make me incredibly uneasy—probably because they make parenting so easy. There is always one at hand to make restaurants and long drives and air travel much more pleasant. The tablet is the new pacifier. But these screens have a weird dual nature: They make us more connected and more isolated at the same time. When I hand my son an iPad with an interactive reading app, he dives in and reads along. But he also goes into a trance. It’s disturbing because, frankly, it reminds me of myself. I’m perpetually distracted, staring into my hand, ignoring the people around me. Hit Refresh and get a reward, monkey. Feed the media and it will nourish you with @replies and Likes until you’re hungry and bleary and up way too late alone in bed, locked in the feedback loop. So what’s a parent to do? I could deny my sona mainstay of

half traditional soccer shoe. It’s a strange-looking piece of footwear, but this odd form has a purpose. Over an extensive research period, Nike designers talked to players about what was important in a shoe, and they quickly realized the game was changing significantly. Today, soccer is faster. It’s about quick moves, quick decisions and strategy, and their hope was to create a new boot to reflect this. “Players wanted no distractions,” says Denis Dekovic, Nike’s Global Football Design Director. “They

If you’ve ever kicked a soccer ball barefoot, you probably noticed a couple of things. First of all, it kind of hurts. But more importantly, you get some incredible control over the ball. As entertaining as it would be to watch professional soccer players run around on the field barefoot, that’s probably never going to happen. Nike has gotten one step closer to an athlete’s natural state with the Magista, its newest soccer boot. Developed for the world cup, the Magista is a totally new form of boot. Nike designers spent the last four years developing the shoe, which looks like half sock,

wanted to be able to focus on the game.” This meant eliminating some traditional elements of a boot, and adding others. For example, the Magista has no tongue, which can be bothersome as it moves side to side when the players run. “This also creates a unibody surface,” Dekovic says. In its place is a stretchy socklike material that extends up past the ankle. This Dynamic Fit Collar is meant to provide extra support for the players and make the boot feel like an extension of the leg. “The big aha moment was when we realized that we shouldn’t be designing a shoe for just the players’ foot,” he says.

modern life or let him dive into a world of unknown consequences. But there’s a third way for us all. We can use some common sense and deploy the same parenting tool we apply to every other indulgence or stimulus: moderation. And while we’re at it, we should think about applying it to ourselves.

2014

“The foot is integrated with the body.” Studs and Pebax and a nylon plate improve players’ traction while the ridges on the side will help players improve control while dribbling. This is harder than it sounds. You can’t just stitch a sock onto a soccer shoe and call it a day. The Dynamic Fit Collar needed a just-right tightness that allows the boot to fit like a second skin while still being easy to slip on. To do this, Nike adapted its Flyknit technology for soccer for the first time, which allows the upper of the shoe to be knit, just like a sock. The benefit of Flyknit is that every square millimeter of material can be microengineered, by adding in special weaves or threads. “You can transition from stretch to solid in a very smooth way,” Dekovic explains. This is what you’re seeing in the Magista, as the collar connects seamlessly to the more solid boot. When you run your fingers on the outside of the shoe, you feel rubbery ridges. This bumpy, 3-D knit texture creates friction on the ball to ensure accurate dribbling and striking, while the rubbery feel is a waterproofing layer that’s thinner than a single sheet of paper. Nike hopes this silhouette will be the standard for future soccer boots. But mostly, the designers are just hoping players will spend less time looking down at the ball, and more time looking ahead and making plays.

Of course I read The Old man and the Sea, and dived among the fish and stunning underwater scenery with a guide who’d heartily swigged copious amounts of liquid from a rum bottle only seconds before hurling himself backwards into the coral-curdled ocean below. I’ve done the Prado, where he loved to wander, but it’s hardly an alcohol swigging venue, but next time I visit Madrid the search will be on for the old quarter and the Cerveceria Alemana, an old German bierkellar, one of his favourites for a swig of the fermented stuff. ‘You ought to see the Spanish coast, big, brown mountains looking like tired dinosaurs’ he wrote to one friend and another ‘Trout streams in the mountains. Tuna in the bay. Green water to swim in and sandy beaches. Cognac is 4 pesetas a litre.’ That’s the Spain we all know and love. I will have seen that Spanish coast a few weeks ago and will now be in the process of heartily re-spanglishing myself. One of his favourite Mojito ‘s will be top of the list. Dawn Llewellyn-Price

Spain Has The Most Blue Flag Beaches

(85), the Canary Islands (48), Murcia (33) and Asturias (17).

There are a lot of things that we could say are wrong with Spain, but the quality of its beaches is not one of them, which despite the obvious overtures related to attracting holidaymakers – and their money – is at least a positive for the environment and our planet.

Glass bottom boat Tours

Spain has achieved its best result ever for the number of blue flags awarded to its beaches and port areas, with 573 for the former and 108 for the latter, making a total of 681. This means that Spain has more blue flags than any other country in the northern hemisphere putting it above other Mediterranean countries that are popular holiday destinations for the international tourist. In fact, Spain is actually way above all the other countries when it comes to the number of blue flags awarded to its beaches, as you can see below: Spain – 573

Greece – 407

Turkey – 397

France – 379

Portugal – 298 After these awards, which have been bestowed by the World Tourism Organisation, this means that every 1 out of every 5 beaches in Spain has a blue flag of quality, and 1 in every 6 blue flags in the world are Spanish. Whilst the majority of visitors will be unaware of how many blue flags there are in Spain, they will take notice of how clean the beaches they go to are when they are here and how good the facilities are, which is all good for its reputation as a class holiday destination. Regions The autonomous region with the highest number of blue flags is Galicia, which has 142. Following Galicia is the Valencia Region, which has a total of 135 flags; Cataluña (113), Andalucía (98), the Balearic Islands

Monday 14th April saw our 5th BiAnnual fashion show featuring Spring & Summer wear. Again thanks to generous donations of good quality clothing and attendance we managed to raise 1153.25 euro’s for our much needed charity. Despite the loss of three of our models at the last minute together with our usual photographer, due to various unforeseen circumstances, replacements were found and “the show went on”! Our models this time were Marje, Pam, Anne, Cath and Janice, the last three being the stand ins and their debut as models. Peter Smith was our photographer this time and what a sterling job he did; some great shots not only of the models but of the ladies who always come along to support us at these events, we all had a fantastic afternoon. A thanks also goes to Malcolm Ruston for the use of his sound system and the music which accompanied our show. To Rosemary from the welcome group who once again lent us the screens for the models to change outfits behind. For all the helpers who helped on the day without whom we could not have put on this fund raising event and to Brenda the compère and Anne who organise and select not only all the modelled outfits but the various racks of clothing, shoes, handbags and jewellery that are for sale after the show.

We are always amazed at the generosity of people in the area who continue to

Meanwhile, steam the potatoes for 10 mins and put the chorizo in a frying pan to slowly cook and release some of its oil. Tip off the excess red oil and add 1 tbsp olive oil. Add the potatoes and fry everything together, turning the heat up as you go so both the potatoes and chorizo brown in patches. Tip into a bowl. Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

We had a lively and productive AGM at the Golf Club attended by many; in fact there were not enough chairs at one point! A vote of thanks was given to our retiring social secretary, Ann, who was presented with a beautiful bouquet by

John Osborne (re-elected as Chair) and supported by a re-elected committee. Monday’s maintenance team and Wednesday’s volunteers continue the street weeding and spraying programme, pavement/road repairs and watering of the numerous, newly-planted young trees and shrubs. If you have any time to ‘adopt’ a small area near your home, by regularly watering the plants and occasionally weeding, we would be extremely grateful, so would the plants(!). Alternatively, you may wish to care for one of the new trees in memory of a loved one, and take over it’s watering etc. by tying a distinctive ribbon around it to show it’s ‘adoption’. Donations of your unwanted plants and broken pots are always appreciated, as are full bottles of water left behind the Welcome Wall when you pass by – using these makes a huge difference to our teams watering burden at the moment so please keep them coming, thank you! C Sector has so many kind people who give their time, donations of both money and plants, snacks and drinks for the workers…Their generosity of spirit makes ‘C’ such a great place to live and visit on holiday! If you would like to volunteer to help us in any way, and

meet new friends, just get in touch via phone or email. We offer the bonus of free breakfasts on Wednesdays and the satisfaction of knowing you are keeping fit while making a huge difference to the place you have chose to live or spend holidays – Each time visitors return here, they notice how lovely the improvements are and always let us know as they pass! Tickets for the Barbeque at the Golf Club on 13th June, with entertainment from Paul Allen, are now available for a donation of 12 Euros each, including food, from John; 634 325 427 and Lesley; 669 047 116. Details of this and other information about our group can be found on the chalkboards, Facebook and our website; http://www. greenfingersgardenandsocialgroup.com/

Camposol ‘B CLEAN’ Gardening Group Summer Newsletter With summer rapidly approaching, we are working to complete current projects before taking a break during the hottest months of the season. Happily, we are at last seeing some colourful rewards for our efforts as many of the Oleander shrubs have now established themselves and are in glorious bloom. A footpath has been completed across the Garden linking B5 to the Footbridge, and the plants and container that were stolen last month from the ‘Bienvenido a Camposol’ wall have been replaced. By the time this newsletter reaches you we hope to have finished clearing and gravelling the long strip of land at the side of the Rambla road leading from the bottom of the dual carriageway to the bridge. When the cooler months return we will be adding shrubs, here and elsewhere

around the sector. ‘B Clean’ Community Group Scheme continues to gradually attract more subscribing members and we are grateful to all those who have already joined and also to those who so kindly stop to donate as they drive past our working volunteers. We hope that many more residents will join the scheme and subscribe just 5 euros a month to help us keep Camposol looking great. If you are interested and willing to add your name to the growing list of members, please contact Sandy or Helen for details (See below.) The more subscribers we have the better Camposol will look. Why do we bother? There are some who wonder; often passing such comments as “It’s the Council’s job”, or “Why should I contribute a subscription when none of my neighbours do.” or making some other negative remark. Happily though, we are more often encouraged by the many very positive responses we receive from all those who can see that we are making a difference. What we can’t do. We sometimes receive personal requests from residents asking B Clean to carry out work in or just outside of their own property - such as repair of pavements left by Aqualia after a water leak. We are sorry but unable to take on such projects; indeed if we were to start repairing all of the broken pavements around Camposol we would not have time to do anything else! However, apart from liability issues, we exist solely to improve those areas of Sector B that are used, or passed, by the community at large and which would not otherwise be maintained. B Clean is an organization of volunteers and we

Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group On the last Sunday of each month, the Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group get together to blitz one of the two large communal areas. Parque Los Palacios and the area referred to as Central Parque (opposite the Bodega) have become the focus of these team events. In order to keep on top of weeding and collecting rubbish, those who are free to spare some time meet at around 9.30 am and work for an about an hour. It´s surprising what can be accomplished in a short time when a few keen volunteers arrive with rakes, secateurs and digging implements, with the promise of a well deserved coffee waiting at the end of the session, or something stronger if you are that way inclined. If you would like to join us for one of the ¨Team Clear Ups¨, look out for details on our website www. lospalacios-gardeners.com, the notice board opposite the post room, or email me for up to date information on joce@ lospalacios-gardeners.com. Many thanks to all of you who contribute to the bucket collections and provide positive feedback on how we are doing. This makes it all worthwhile for our fund raisers who do a fantastic job of keeping Camposol A supplied with membrane and stone chips.

gardening volunteers on Sector B, plants of many colours have been purchased in order to make the most of the summer. These vibrant colours compliment the roses, but unfortunately have already fallen prey to some mindless thieves. This however, is not going to deter our Group in continuing to focus on these areas to provide an improved environment for all residents. All work and no play is not something you can accuse our Group of! Our Events Schedule for the rest of year includes a July Carnival Dance - hosted by Barrington at Mariano´s outside bar, a Race Night at the Vista Bar in October and our Christmas Party Dance on 13th December at the Amapola. If you are interested in supporting the Group by attending any of these events, tickets will be on sale at the Book Stall on Friday mornings and again, you can check out the website for more details. Our long awaited ¨Association¨ status has now been granted, which will enable us to gain insurance for our volunteers now that we also have a CIF number. We feel this is a milestone in the Group´s achievements and will enable us to accept the generous sponsorship that has been offered from our many supporters. Joce Grant - Group Secretary

Health &Wellbeing Is This Really Hip Pain? One of the most common secondary conditions (symptoms) we see presenting at the chiropractic centre is people with what they think is hip pain. Before we go on to explain why the confusion occurs a good place to start is to understand the anatomy of the area. The hip joint is a simple joint known as a ‘ball and socket joint,’ between the head of the femur (upper leg bone) and the pelvis. The hip joint is located deep in the groin area. In close proximity to the hip joint is what is known as the sacroiliac joint. This joint is formed between the pelvis and the sacrum and is located above the buttocks.

So why the confusion? Well, both sacro-iliac pain and hip pain have some common traits, most notably Fuente Alamo has a new Spanish speaking receptionist, we therefore request that you call Lawrence the chiropractor direct on 645 785 310, or send an email to drlawrenceking@gmail.com and he will call you back

pain with walking. Also with many people there is some confusion as to the location of the hip. When we ask our patients to point where they feel ‘their hip pain,’ they often point to the area above the buttock, actually the sacro-iliac joint.

is a significant amount of arthritis then the best option is a hip replacement. However if the issue is actually coming from the sacro-iliac joint then Structural Chiropractic treatment can often offer a conservative solution.

So how do you know which one you have? Aside from the difference in the location of the pain, sacro-iliac joint pain is more likely to be painful when changing from a seated to standing position and can present with referred pain into the leg.

So what are the treatment options? Well, let’s start with if the problem is actually true hip pain. In these cases and if there

Health &Wellbeing

Tired, aching legs due to long periods of standing or sitting may be caused by poor circulation in the legs. When the blood is pumped around the body, it is returned to the heart through the veins. As the heart is at a higher position in the body than the legs, blood in the legs has to be pumped against gravity in order to reach the heart. The contraction of the muscles in the legs when moving around acts as a pump, squeezing the veins and pushing the blood upwards. During long periods of inactivity, for example when standing or sitting in the same position for a long time, the leg muscles do not contract sufficiently hard enough or frequently enough to force the blood upwards. As a result, blood gathers in the leg veins restricting it from draining from the tissues of the leg. This can cause a feeling of heaviness or tension in the legs, making them ache and feel tired. If this condition is allowed to continue untreated, eventually the small valves in the veins of the legs stop working properly, leading to swollen ankles, varicose veins and possibly deep vein thrombosis. Other things, that can cause poor circulation in the legs and trigger leg discomfort include: Being pregnant, being overweight, excessive heat, humidity or alcohol consumption. Wearing high heels or shoes with rigid soles. Smoking tobacco, having a high cholesterol level or high blood pressure damages the veins. SYMPTOMS The first symptoms to appear are uncomfortable feelings in the feet and legs towards the end of the day. The symptoms usually ease with rest. The discomfort may develop into cramp in the leg muscles, cold feet or a feeling of tension in the legs making them heavy, tired and ache. The ankles may swell, and the skin on the legs may itch or become discoloured. Cuts or grazes on the legs may be slow to heal. TREATMENT There are health supplements containing natural extracts such as flavonoids which, taken regularly, may help keep leg veins

2014

healthy, like: Rusco, Hamamelis, Castaño de indias. There are also gels that can be massaged all over the legs to stimulate circulation, to cool and soothe tired legs and release leg tensión, like:Vitiven gel, Singuladerm Xpert fatigue, Elencyl relajante piernas spray. If leg pain is a problem analgesics such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be used.

Tight clothes obstruct the flow of blood back to the heart and can make leg pain worse. If your legs are causing a lot of pain, try rinsing them with a burst of cool water in the shower. Stimulate circulation with a natural bristle brush daily or gently massaging your legs. This is all for now. If you have any question about tired, aching, heavy legs do not hesitate and ask to Camposol pharmacy team.

USEFUL TIPS Tense and relax your leg muscles, rotate your feet and wiggle your toes during the day. Try not to cross your legs for long periods as this restricts blood flow in the veins. Lying down with your legs raised above the level of your heart will help ease the discomfort. Try to switch your body weight from one leg to another at regular intervals. Eat a balanced diet, increase the amount of fruit and vegetables. Try to exercise, thereby increasing the efficiency of the leg muscle pump in returning blood. Drink plenty of water, it will keep the blood volume within normal range and a healthy circulation.

Sports Certainly no April Fools….. On Wednesday 23rd April over 30 members and guests gathered at the Lorca Resort Golf Club, to play the monthly stapleford competition. This course, is a real credit to all of the management and staff, as it was in excellent in condition. The scores on the day certainly reflected the good condition of the course, and it was said that the handicap secretary was heard to be muttering that several members would see a reduction in their handicap by the time we next play at Paraleja. Coming down the home straight two players were in a very close battle for

Friday 27th June 2014 when members and guests are invited along, with tickets costing 12 euros, a good turnout is expected so book your seats early. The previous day (26th) we are playing our monthly game at Paraleja, meeting at 9am for a 10am tee off. Geoff Sharp hatters45@msn.com

Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C more competitive but just as enjoyable. At the time of writing Mazarron FC still had three games remaining in the 2013-14 season and were in a mid table position in the league after a topsy turvy season. After an excellent start which saw the Club just two points off an automatic promotion spot before the Christmas break, fortunes deteriorated rapidly in the New Year and Manager Antonio Lorente was replaced in mid March by the successful Cadetes (15/16s) coach, Javi. In his first eight games, five were won, one drawn and there were only two defeats. Performances improved, the quality of football improved and the Club’s disciplinary record also improved dramatically. Towards the end of the season Javi introduced a number of young players from the Club’s junior teams to give them experience at senior level and they all adapted superbly. In Jose Ruben and Tolo, Mazarron have two of the top three leading goalscorers in the league and with other senior players like Cecilio, Alfonso, Tico and Moha, together withthe emerging talents of younger players like Randry and Dani the future looks really bright for the Club. If the nucleus of the senior squad is retained, this blend of youth and experience augurs really well for a promotion push in the 2014-15 season which will start in September.

the title, but in the end Dave Bennett (pictured) returned a magnificent 36 points, and took the win. He was followed closely by Clive Fowler (34 points), and there was a tie for 3rd place between Tony Rootes, and Mike Harrison (33 points). The nearest the pin was won by Nigel Chadderton. The society will be holding its annual BBQ at the Camposol Golf Club on the

Last June saw the first Los Amigos Go Karting competition at the track in Puerto de Mazarron when members and friends turned back the clock to provide some excellent racing in this dangerous sport. July saw a visit to the tenpin bowling centre in Totana and members enjoyed the Go Kart experience so much that they went back for more in September when the racing was even

Of the teams which Mazarron FC runs at junior levels in five age groups, the Juveniles and Cadetes teams gained promotion from their respective divisions and, at the time of writing, the Alevins were in third place in their division with two games to go, just three points behind the league leaders. Off the field, 2013-14 has been a busy time for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC. Many social activities have been organised for members and there is something for everyone if they wish to take part and, although an interest in football helps, it certainly is not a requisite to join the supporters club.

In October the fabulous Soul Power, a five piece band from the Alicante area, entertained us at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf. The event was a complete sell out with guests enjoying a barbeque prior to Soul Power’s performance. Everyone had a wonderful time and it was a privilege to witness such an accomplished band here in the Mazarron area. The Los Amigos Christmas Party and Social evening was held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf on Saturday 30th November. Entertainment was provided by Michelle and Pitu and members and friends also enjoyed a buffet supper. It was a great night out and Michelle and Pitu entered into the festive spirit with traditional Christmas songs as well as a wide range of popular music from their repertoire which kept the audience dancing late into the night. In January members and friends enjoyed a bowls day out with the Mazarron Bowls Club at Hacienda del Alamo and February saw the first of our monthly Luncheon Club outings with a visit to the Totana Tennis Club to sample their excellent Menu del Dia. The Luncheon Club has subsequently met every month, in March at “The Lamp Chop”, in April at La Molata and, most recently, the May lunch at Los Balcones, Canadas de Romero. March saw a number of special events including the 5th Gala Evening and Dinner at the Hotel la Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarron when Joe Royle was the guest speaker. Sporting celebrities from the United Kingdom once again flew into Spain to support Los Amigos. Currie was held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf and both John and Tony also took part in a Celebrity Golf competition at the Golf Club. Last month saw a Quiz Night and Disco at the Black Bull, Camposol, where members and friends took part in an excellent quiz compiled by Los Amigos member Steve Wilson. Dave Perks was MC for the evening which included an excellent buffet supper and dancing late into the evening with some unforgettable (and some forgettable) karoke contributions. The final event of the busiest ever year for Los Amigos is the Player of the Year Evening to be held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf on Tuesday 3rd June. Mazarron players and staff will join members for what is always a great social occasion with a barbeque supper and entertainment provided by Woody as well as the presentation of the Los Amigos Player of the Year Trophy and the Players’ Player of the Year Trophy. Sadly, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC and Mazarron FC lost two loyal members and supporters during the year with the untimely deaths of Alan Hogg and Reg Betts both of whom had served on the Executive Committee of Los Amigos. They will be sadly missed by wives Shona and Sally, their families and all their friends. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC hold weekly meetings at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm. Social meetings, which are open to anyone, members or not, are held every Thursday with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. If you are interested in football or just want to meet new friends in pleasant surroundings please come along and join us. For the last few years meetings have not normally been held during the month of July and the early part of August but full details will be given in the next edition. Membership of Los Amigos de Mazarron FC runs from 1st August each year and costs 10€. For details of membership and any other

How to Use a Fairway or Hybrid Wood Fairway woods are versatile clubs that help you cover long distances on the golf course. Sometimes, you need to hit a long shot over a hazard or to reach a long, tough par 4 in two strokes-or even to hit a par 5 in two and have the exciting opportunity for an eagle. Becoming proficient at hitting fairway woods can help players who are shooting in the 90’s to bring their scores into the 80’s. Adjust Your Stance and Ball Position Just as when you are hitting a driver, your stance with a fairway wood should be wider than what you use when hitting your irons. You want to approach the ball at a more level angle with a fairway wood than you do with your driver, so move the ball back in your stance. If you are a right-handed golfer, the ball should be 4 inches inside your left heel. Sweeping Motion The mental image you want for fairway wood shots is that you are sweeping through the ball, not striking down on it as you do with your iron shots. Make a more rounded, or less upright, swing-which is encouraged by your wider stance. Resist the tendency to over swing, or hurry your swing, in order to generate more clubhead speed and power. Full extension and good tempo will give you all the power you need. You might even deliberately swing with less than your normal speed to make sure you keep your rhythm and

balance throughout the swing. Make Use of Loft Many amateurs, even those who shoot regularly in the 80’s, have difficulty with long irons--the 2-iron and 3-iron in particular. Consider replacing these troublesome clubs with a 7-wood and a 9-wood. Lofted woods are easier to hit, can give you plenty of distance, and will make you more confident when you step up to the ball. If you find that a 3-wood is a difficult club for you to hit off the fairway, use a 3- or 4-wood instead to get the ball airborne faster. Woods From the Rough Higher-lofted woods are efficient tools to get your ball out of the rough. These clubs have a lower centre of gravity, and when combined with a higher loft than long irons, can help you make more solid contact with the ball. Move the ball back in your stance somewhat and envision a swing with a more descending blow, rather than the sweeping motion you use from good lies in the fairway. Try Them Off the Tee Higher handicap players lose many strokes from errant tee shots that end up in the trees or rough, or are topped or popped up. The driver is one of the most intimidating clubs in the bag, particularly because many amateurs swing too violently with the driver in an attempt to gain more distance. Players that are struggling with the driver should switch to a fairway wood off the tee--a 3-wood or 4-wood. The higher loft helps them get their tee shots up in the air more quickly and more accurately. Staying out of trouble off the tee is one of the most important keys to game improvement for higher handicap players

Spanish government rebate drives car sales MORE Spaniards are buying new cars this year, according to manufacturers’ association Anfac. Data shows that sales of new cars in Spain rose by 28.7% last month, compared to April 2013. This is the eighth straight month of increased sales, taking the total cars sold in April to 80,174. Sales have been boosted by a government subsidy scheme, giving buyers of new cars a rebate for trading in their old vehicles. In total, the first four months of 2014 saw a rise of 16.2%, compared to the same period last year.

Spain will begin producing an electric car next year that’s about the same size as a Smart, but can collapse itself into an even smaller footprint when parked. The Hiriko, which means “urban car” in Basque, is the brainchild of researchers

When folded, its length is reduced to 60 inches and is comparable to the width of a typical car, which means you’ll be able to fit three Hirikos in a parking space meant for a single car. Seven Basque design firms worked with MIT to bring the prototype to production and turn it into a 100-inch EV that seats two. The Hikiro saves space by integrating its electric motors, steering, and brakes in the wheels. Its systems are all digitally managed with a drive-by-wire system. The folding vehicle was unveiled yesterday to the European Commission during the launch of the Hiriko Driving Mobility project. Spain plans to produce the vehicles and lease them to city residents, much like ZipCar or other city car shares. They’ll also sell the vehicle for approximately $16,350, reports the AFP.

Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition review It’s been just over 50 years since Porsche introduced the 911, and this new Anniversary Edition, available to 1,963 buyers, celebrates that landmark. Retro cues abound, like 20-inch Fuchs-style alloys, houndstooth seats (full-leather seats are available at no extra cost) and the chrome engine grille. Underneath it all are Carrera S mechanicals, allied to the wider rear wheelarches of the Carrera 4 models. The Geyser Grey Metallic paint is unique to the 50 – although you can get

The 911 50th Edition will cost you from £92,257, which is about £9,000 more than a standard Carrera S. Add some of the kit standard on a 50, and the difference shrinks to around £5,000. Property, Financial and Legal PRESS RELEASE FROM EXPAT PENSION PROVIDERS LTD DEFINED BENEFIT SCHEMES – WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER! Chancellor George Osborne caused quite a stir during his Budget speech when he said that he would act to stop people transferring out of Defined Benefit Schemes, also known as final salary schemes. His target date for this is April 2015 - if there is a sudden rush for the door, he may consider closing that door SOONER. He has also instigated a review of defined benefit schemes in private companies. If you worked in the public sector, or have a final salary scheme from a private sector company, then you need to understand what this means and what your options are. These might include civil service, health service, armed forces or education service pensions. Or they could have been provided by the private sector company or organisation that you worked for. If you are already taking your pension, then you cannot do anything. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY RECEIVING IT, YOU HAVE 2 OPTIONS: You can do nothing and wait for the due date, in some cases your 60th birthday, in others the 65th birthday. Property, Financial and Legal large increase in foreign buyers entering the market,’ he explained. He has seen the market pick up from the lows post credit crunch with the firm’s sales in Murcia up 60% in 2013 compared with 2012. Already for the first three months of 2014 sales have jumped from an average of 7.6 sales per month to 12.6, another 60% rise, but he believes these figures could easily be higher. ‘Most of our clients are cash buyers or those securing finance in their home country. With restrictive lending, Spain is shooting itself in the foot,’ said Mercer. The latest official figures confirm that mortgage numbers in Spain have dropped for the 46th consecutive month up to February 2014. Experts believe that the country is in no danger of a full recovery,

let alone a property boom, as average house prices have fallen by 30% since 2008 and mortgage lending dropped from a peak of €173 billion in 2007 to just €26 billion in 2013. In other areas prices have fallen more. For example in Murcia it is closer to 50% since the most recent peak of the market in 2007. With national unemployment not below 25% since 2012, it’s the foreigners that Spain is relying on to keep the property market alive. Sales to foreigners are indeed on the up, they were at a nine year high in 2013 when non-Spaniards bought €6.45 billion worth of property. Data from the Council of Notaries shows that 21.4% of all residential property sales in Spain in 2013 was to foreign buyers, that is 55,187 homes, up 9.8% on 2012.

‘But this could be much higher. Prices are still falling in some areas, and add in the strong pound versus euro and prices are even lower for foreign buyers. Relax lending and sales will soar, prices will inevitably stabilise and steadily increase,’ Mercer pointed out. ‘But there will be no general recovery in the Spanish housing market, for nationals and foreigners alike, until mortgage lending returns to normal,’ he added. He also pointed out that it is not all bad economic news. Spain’s GDP rose at its fastest quarterly pace in six years in the first quarter of 2014. It is the latest sign that the economy is picking up steam after years of recession. Year on year Spain’s GDP increased some 0.6%, higher than expected.

of these and others can be found on our website or I can provide you with any information on our rescue animals.

May, as lovely as it was, bought us a variety of problems to deal with at AAR. We were contacted by a Spanish family who were having extreme difficulty with feeding their pets and animals and asked us for help. We visited them and we were shocked to see they had 5 Horses, 1 Donkey, 35 Pigs and piglets and 15 Dogs! And no money to feed them! The Horses, Donkey and Pigs were in pretty poor shape, being very skinny, and 1 Mare was very heavily in foal! The dogs, though were many, appeared to be in better shape. We immediately offered help with food for the animals and offered to take the Horses and Donkey into care, which the family readily agreed to. We are most grateful to Laura, at Los Caballos Lunes for offering a home to all the Horses. The Pigs, Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs and piglets, will need to be re-homed and we are looking for anyone that has space at home and in their heart for one or more of these lovely animals. They are very intelligent and make the most wonderful pets. After a report of an emaciated, stray Mastine Dog taking up residence in a factory in a nearby village, where workers were feeding her, we set about trying to capture her. It took four attempts as she was so frightened, but our patience and persistence paid off at last. We now have April in our care and it will be a long job to get her feeding properly and back into shape, and to get her to trust again, but slowly by slowly, we are making progress with her. Then we can hopefully look for her forever home. We’ve had a terrible month for crime. First our shop in Fuente got broken into and the till and some stock were stolen. Then we had an incident with shoplifters in our shop in Mazarron. We managed to catch the thief in Mazarron and are going ahead with a prosecution. The message has got to get out there that it’s not OK to steal, particularly from a charity shop! What is the World coming to? After another trip to the parerra on rescue business, we came away with two dear little Dogs which were awaiting their sentence of death. Pepe and Muffin, both terrier type small to medium sized boys, are only young dogs, 7mths and 13mths respectively, and have been castrated, micro chipped and are passported ready to go. All they wait for is a loving home, could it be yours? Little Twinkle was found abandoned in the streets, barely old enough to leave her mother, and covered in ticks. She was handed into our Mazarron, a tiny little thing, very poorly and anaemic. She is now recovering from her ordeal and slowly improving. She won’t be very big when fully grown as is a sweet tiny dog, and will make a lovely pet for that lucky someone. Little Jack was lucky enough to find his forever home this month, but we are still desperate to find homes for the lovely Toc, Tetley and not forgetting the adorable Peggy-Sue. Details

With the up-coming World Cup here are some football jokes David Beckham ordered a pizza and was aked if he wanted it cut into 4 pieces or 8. “make it 4 “ said David “I don’t think I could eat 8” Roy Hodgeson has set up a friendly match against Iceland to try and cheer fans up. If we beat them then we go on to play Tesco’s and then Sainsbury’s. Teacher to class, “What does your Dad do at the Weekends?” A little boy replies, “ He is a dancer at a Gay club. The teacher takes the kid outside, “Is that True?” “No Miss, he is the goalkeeper for England, but I am too embarrassed to say.” A man arrives at the gates of heaven, where St. Peter greets him and says: “Before I can let you enter I must ask you what you have done in your life that was particularly good.” The man racks his brains for a few minutes and then admits to St. Peter that he hasn’t done anything particularly good in his life. “Well,” says St. Peter, “have you done anything particularly brave in your life?” “Yes, I have,” replies the man proudly. St. Peter asks the man to give an account of his bravery.

Last month’s Suduko answers

So the man explains, “I was refereeing this important match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. The score was 0-0 and there was only one more minute of play to go in the second half when I awarded a penalty against Liverpool at the Kop end.” “Yes,” responded St. Peter, “I agree that was a real act of bravery. Can you perhaps tell me when this took place?” “Certainly,” the man replied, “about three minutes ago.” Hours after the end of the world, a border dispute emerged between heaven and hell. God invited the devil for conversations to find a way to resolve this dispute quickly. Satan, the devil, proposed a soccer game between heaven and hell. God, always fair, told the devil, “The heat must be affecting your brain, the game would be so one sided, don’t you know all the ‘good’ players go to heaven?”

The man: “That’s terrible, but couldn’t you get another member of the family, friend, or someone else to come with you?” The guy: “No…they are all at the funeral!” Three fans were talking about the sad state of their local club; The first fan blamed...: “I blame the manager; if we could sign better players, we’d be a great club.” The second fan blamed...: “I blame the players; if they made more effort, I’m sure we would score more goals.” The third fan blamed...: “I blame my parents; if I had been born in a different town, I’d be supporting a decent team.” Q: Which goalkeeper can jump higher than a crossbar? A: All of them, crossbars can’t jump.

The devil, smiling, responded “Yeah, but we’ve got all the refs’...” A week before the Champions League final a few years ago there was an ad in a local newspaper which said: “Local man offers marriage to any woman that has tickets to the Champions League final. Those interested must send in photo of the tickets.” A man takes his seat at the World Cup Final. He looks to his left and notices that there is a spare seat between himself and the next guy. The man: “Who would ever miss the World Cup final?” The guy: “That was my wife’s seat. We have been to the last five World Cup finals together, but sadly she passed away.”
