JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to the June 2015 edition of The Journal! This month we would like to extend a special welcome to all our new readers in the Mar Menor and San Javier areas of Murcia. Our Award Winning magazine is now pleased to claim it´s title as the widest distributed and most read magazine on the Costa Calida! We print and distribute more copies than any of our competitors. Fact. May was a bit of a crazy month with the local elections taking place. There was lots of campaigning, lots of hustle and bustle, and the internet was awash with accusations of skulduggery and slander. There was mudslinging aplenty as we reached the final days before voting day. One thing is for certain, it was not a dull election. We got the whole election experience, and for the first time it looked like a fire had been ignited among the expats to make their voice heard and hit the polling stations to cast their votes. And then, on Election Day, the big day when it mattered, the expected numbers failed to appear at the polling stations with only a fraction of those registered to vote actually doing so. Politics is a strange business. Last month we have had lots of positive feedback from people who have been in touch with one of our advertisers in Totana. Fenienergia can save you money on your electric bill. All you need to do is email them the last copy of your electricity bill and they will contact you to explain how much you could save. What do you have to lose? Contact them today! Now that the summer has arrived it is our pleasure to announce that the BBQ terrace of 7th Heaven in Puerto De Mazarron is NOW OPEN! This is the only authentic wood and charcoal fired BBQ restaurant in the area and over the years that they have built a strong reputation for great food, served in a great atmosphere, along with the best views! Look out for their advert later in the magazine. If you plan to head down there, take our advice and CALL for a reservation to avoid disappointment. We would like welcome La Manga Watersports to The Journal! If you want to try something different this summer, or you need to keep visiting family or friend’s entertained then pay these guys a visit. This really is the perfect day out. Stunning beaches, great water sports activities and two of the friendliest instructors that you could ever hope to meet, means that you are guaranteed an amazing time. See their advert in this month’s magazine, and call them for more details! From everyone at The Journal, have a wonderful June! See you next month! Robert Rutherford

6 Scottish Arrested on Ryanair Flight

4 Year Anniversary of Lorca Earthquake May marked the 4 year anniversary of the May 11th Earthquakes that devastated the city of Lorca. At 17:05 local time, the first quake struck with a magnitude of 4.4 in the Richter scale. This foreshock inflicted substantial damage to many older and historic structures. The death toll had already begun with 3 confirmed deaths from falling structures. Moments later a number of homes and businesses were evacuated and closed for the day as a precaution. As Emergency services from across the region reacted to the multitude of calls, and residents surveyed the damage to their properties a second earthquake struck. At 18:47 the second quake at 5.1 on the Richter scale caused a greater degree of damage to the fabric of many buildings, with falling masonry striking dozens of panicking residents. By nightfall the death toll had reached 11. With many buildings left in a dangerous state, many chose to sleep either in cars or camp out in open spaces from fear that further earthquakes would occur. Having been declared a national emergency, the nation’s emergency response kicked in and the military were called upon to support emergency medical and law enforcement teams. Four years later and the regeneration is still very much the subject of debate with locals, with dozens of developments and property owners still awaiting a satisfactory conclusion to their insurance claims, and with many losing their properties altogether after the Banks seized the damaged properties after fearing that mortgage repayments by the affected owners would never be met. Lorca has bounced back, and the local residents have largely succeeded in rebuilding their lives as well as the city itself, but the scars of the 11th of May 2011 are never very far from the surface.

6 men were arrested in Spain after ‘shocking behaviour while drunk’ on board a Ryanair flight. The group flew out from Glasgow Prestwick Airport at 7am to Palma, Mallorca and their behaviour was so bad the crew were forced to call the police prior to landing. It is believed the men were set to holiday at the notorious party resort of Magaluf. Ryanair said the police were called ahead after the group acted in a disruptive manner during the two hour 50 minute flight from Scotland. A witness said: ‘The Guardia Civil came and arrested the six men, the air crew had called on ahead to alert them to what was happening. ‘It was 7am yet these folk were already steamin!. It was shocking behaviour.’ A spokesperson for Ryanair said ‘The crew of this flight from Prestwick to Palma requested police assistance after several passengers became disruptive in-flight. The aircraft landed normally and police removed and detained these individuals upon arrival at Palma.

The spokesman said: ‘Those who have purchased duty free alcohol will be asked to either place their purchases in their cabin baggage and into the hold at the boarding gate, or leave their purchases behind. ‘The comfort and safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we will not tolerate unruly behaviour at any time.’

‘The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. This is now a matter for local police.’

There have been problems with passengers opening alcohol purchased from duty free shops at Glasgow Prestwick Airport and drinking on the flight to Ibiza.

It is not the first time Ryanair flights out of Prestwick have made the news. Just last month Ryanair took the unprecedented step of banning passengers from bringing their own booze on board flights between Glasgow and the party island of Ibiza out of concerns for safety and comfort. The Dublin-based

In a statement a Ryanair spokesman said the airline made the decision after consultations with customers and airport officials.

The spokesman declined to identify the incidents which sparked the ban or say what will happen to passengers caught trying to sneak alcohol on board.

Ryanair refused to explain the reason behind its decision, but it follows a handful of incidents involving boorish behaviour by inebriated travellers heading to the island for days of sun, booze and revelry.

airline informed passengers travelling on the notorious flight from Glasgow Prestwick Airport to the Spanish island that their alcohol purchases from duty free shops are no longer allowed in the cabin, and they risk being kicked off the flight if they don’t comply.

Temperatures rose to record breaking levels in the north eastern region of Catalonia, while elsewhere the searing heat claimed its first victim. It was the hottest May on record in Catalonia, with the region basking under unseasonably sizzling temperatures. Temperatures of 36.6C were registered in Sant Romà d’Abella in Lleida and 36.1C in Tarragona while Barcelona recorded temperatures as high as 36C.

The previous highest temperature recorded in Barcelona, since records began over 100 years ago, was 34.9C, recorded on May 9th 1912. That record was shattered this as a heatwave has swept across the country which saw a construction worker die from heat stroke in Badajoz, near the Portuguese border. Juan Francisco Díaz, 32, collapsed while digging a ditch at a country house a few kilometres from Badajoz in temperatures of over 35C. He was taken to hospital but doctors could not save his life. According to Quim Cot, from Catalonia’s meteorological agency (SMC), recent temperatures are definitely “unusual” for May and an indication that summer is starting earlier and earlier. Cot explained that the heatwave was caused due to a mass of hot air from North Africa. While Catalonia’s coastal areas enjoyed a cool sea breeze, inland towns felt the heat rise to record breaking temperatures. The hottest spot in Spain so far this year was Lanzarote where a temperature of 42.4C was recorded at the airport. Authorities placed 33 provinces across Spain on alert, while Valencia was on “red alert” with temperatures expected to reach 42 degrees. Murcia was on “orange alert” as the thermometer topped 39 C.

Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo declined to provide details about the investigation of Jesus Figon, who was questioned Tuesday in the Brazilian city of Vitoria. Spanish and Brazilian media reported the victim was Figon’s Brazilian wife, that she died of knife wounds and that Figon was released after answering questions about the death. Garcia-Margallo told reporters Spain will not allow “diplomatic immunity to serve as an alibi in incidents as severe as domestic violence” and would strip Figon of it if evidence proves domestic violence as the case unfolds.

Wellspring Wanderers

A short (5Km) but challenging walk was enjoyed by about 14 of us in the Espu帽as on 27th April, just above and including theTrasvase waterway near Alhama de Murcia. Challenging, because it was basically just a dotted line on a general map of paths and involved some pre-planning to find a way between one remote and abandoned bridge to another, with a certain amount of help from google earth. The tracks between the bridges were never properly finished, possibly through lack of funds, but which, by their nature made the walk more interesting. The views were quite stunning in places, and interspersed with occasional glimpses of the waterway below.

Uncle Paul’s problem page Dear Paul I am a man in my late sixties and I now live alone. My health is not very good. I have children from two of my three marriages. I really am not interested in becoming involved in another relationship. I watch television all day and go out for a walk in the afternoon when I pick up some shopping for supper. On Friday, I have supper out. No one ever calls me.  I never got very far in my life, and I spend a lot of time thinking about the past and sometimes I just go over and over the many mistakes I have made wishing I had done things differently. What can I do? LW Dear LW Sometimes it is hard to accept the past.  You need to focus on the good things, and realize that we all have made choices based on our limited abilities. Sounds like you need to get out and involved in life more.

Well a dog will dig up your garden and probably fart that nasty back of the throat, strangling stench that can come out of them. This will in turn make you put him out in the garden where he will start to dig it all up again! Cats will leave you fir balls to tread in on the way for a pee in the middle of the night and bring you loving gifts of mice and dead birds! Both have fleas. I’m rooting for a goldfish. Paul Dear Paul I have really never been close to my brother and haven’t spoken to him in many years, although I do send Christmas and birthday cards.

You need to start reaching out because loneliness is painful and can confuse you into thinking that you are a loser, or an outcast. You are reacting by withdrawing into yourself, your thoughts, and your feelings and this is not helpful. At its best, thinking of loneliness might make us reach out and cultivate new friendships, which is the healthiest thing to do if you are unhappy and alone.

Anyway, my brother, his wife and two children are coming to visit in the summer and I can’t help but feel terribly uncomfortable. We are supposed to go out with them on the odd day to show them around the area and have the occasional meal. Thankfully, I will have my other family with me, but I don’t have a clue what to say to someone I hardly speak to or know.  My brother and I have never really been close even when we were children.

When you are a child and your sadness causes you to cry, you may evoke a comforting response from others. If you’re an adult, not so much.

Would you give me some pointers on how not to feel quite so uncomfortable with their visit? Thanks in advance for your advice.

It is down to you to change, join a group, make an effort and go to a quiz night you will with time make a friend or two. Nourish those friendships with time and attention. Don’t be too cautious about whether you are giving more than you are getting at first. If you make more friends it will be rewarding in the long run. But please it is up to you to get off your backside and put a big effort into changing this situation. Paul

everything will be ok. After all, why would they be coming over if they did not want to see you and be in your company? This is not forever, this is just short visit so just relax and have a good time. Paul Dear Paul My Spanish husband and I spend one weekend a month with his mother and take her to Madrid to see other family members, taking her shopping, etc. My problem is I always end up sitting in the back seat of the car when we go. It’s not as though we have a small car and it would be just as easy for her to sit in the back seat as it is in the front seat. It has been this way for a couple of years now, and I haven’t said anything to my husband because she is his mother after all. But I feel as his wife I should be honest with my husband and tell him how I feel. Please help. We are about to go on another visit with her again and don’t want to spend it in the backseat for a four-hour drive each way. BF Dear BF And they say the youth have no manners. What happened to respecting your elders? Say nothing! Most men love their mothers and you do not want to make him feel piggy in the middle with your griping. What I am not getting to grips with is that you feel so aggrieved with this arrangement. You get to be “Queen Bee/Hyacinth at all other times of the month swanning around in the front seat, yet you can’t put yourself out on these trips. Shame on you! But if you must do something about the seating arrangement, the next time the two of you go to pick up his mother, stay in the car, roll down the window and say, “Hola, stick your old carcass in the back seat, because I want to sit next to your wonderful son on this occasion.” Bon voyage and have a nice trip. Dear Paul I am a 53 woman, attractive, successful and fit. I have essentially been single since my divorce ten years ago. I seem to

run up against ageism over and over from men my own age! Why are men in their fifties all messed up, or am I expecting too much to want a relationship with a man around my own age?

man your own age, then short of moving to a remote town, you’re probably going to have to just lower your standards. Not so fit, not so successful maybe really ugly from Camposol Sector D!

CH

I understand why this is frustrating, but whatever you do, don’t live in denial or let this make you bitter. Accept it. Come to terms with it as soon as possible and know in your heart that there’s really nothing you can do to change the way things are. Paul

Dear CH I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news (otherwise known as reality), but 50 plus single men who are also attractive, successful, and fit simply do not date women their own age. That just isn’t the kind of world we live in. Here on the sunny Costa Calida, attractive and successful fifty - something men date women in their twenties. I’m not sure where you live, but best case scenario they date women in their thirties. If you find yourself a divorcee who’s already had kids, you’ve got a better shot, but only if he’s a serial monogamist who’s done having his mid-life crisis. If you want a serious relationship, start looking at men in their sixties. If you just want to have some fun, feel free to start cougaring it up, a la Mrs Robinson and go for much younger twenty-somethings. (Yep, you can do that now too. There are a few good bars in the port for this). If you absolutely insist on a relationship with a

Dear Paul What does “I don’t necessarily want to break up, but we should start seeing other people” mean? Because that’s what my girlfriend of nine months said to me. It sounds to me like “I really want to break up, but I also want to keep you as an emergency booty call.” DL Dear DL Yes, that’s exactly what it means. It also means your girlfriend is a selfish, lazy coward who cares so little about you and your feelings that she can’t even be bothered with the inconvenience of ending your relationship. The problem is that she’s not lying. She doesn’t necessarily want to break up, which means

she might put just enough energy into the relationship to keep you around. So the next question is, how low are your expectations? Do you have the strength to say, “No, our relationship is exclusive? You cannot be with me and also see other people” If you’re a strong man with selfrespect and the courage of your convictions, then she’s setting you up to be the one who ends things. If you happen to be a weak-willed doormat, that’s fine with her too, because like you said, she can always string you along as an emergency booty call. Paul Dear Paul “I invited my neighbour over for dinner the other evening . She came and brought her dog who sat in the corner licking himself. After dinner, she took a plate of leftovers from the table, set it on the floor and let her dog lick the plate clean. “My plate!” I was appalled and disgusted!” She has since invited me over to her house for a meal and I don’t want to go. What should I say? JK Dear JK Aren’t dogs wonderful? - Tell her you are on a diet!

2015 Named as “The Year of The Smartwatch” Defying scepticism and geekstigma, mobile phone firms are determined this year to sell you a wristwatch wirelessly connected to your mobile phone. Numerous models have hit the market over the past year but this year has seen an explosion, with manufacturers making their watches and other wearable connected devices more elegant and useful. US giant Apple’s release of its first “smartwatch” has made 2015 a “tipping point for wearables” Apple’s Asian rivals scrambled to unveil their own connected wrist gadgets in Barcelona at the World Mobile Congress trade show. South Korean manufacturer LG released the Urbane LTE, its first fully connected luxury wristwatch which can make and receive calls - either with a wireless headset, or by speaking into your wrist like the comic book detective Dick Tracy. Unlike most smartwatch models, the chunky Urbane LTE version has its own network SIM card with a mobile connection and so can be used for calls, without needing to be linked to a

smartphone. Chinese telecom giant Huawei also unveiled a deluxe smartwatch: a round stainless steel creation that it says can receive text messages, email and call notifications as well monitoring your heart rate and calories burned.

done, we asked people what a smartwatch is for and they had

The industry is watching keenly to see whether smartwatches will be the first mobile phone-linked “wearables” to really take off in the mass market - a tough call, according to analysts. “In the enduser research that we’ve

no idea,” said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight. With the big phone companies piling in alongside smaller smartwatch specialists such as Pebble, fashion brands are doing their bit to try and design a more desirable product. Several Swiss watchmakers and fashion brands such as Guess have unveiled designs, while jeweller Swarovski has encrusted smartwatches with its crystals for a deluxe look. “The vast majority of smartwatches on the market are bulky and look more like a piece of technology than a fashion item,” however, said Kevin Curran, a telecom specialist at the University of Ulster. “That’s going to change as companies focus more on design and making devices that are more discreet.” With their new circular watches, LG and Huawei positioned themselves at the luxury end of the market, differentiating themselves from the squarefaced design revealed in previews by Apple. “We set out to create smartwatches that could contend for a spot on your wrist with a luxury mechanical watch,” said LG’s head for Britain and Ireland, Andrew Coughlin. The Californian company has reportedly shipped five million of its Apple Watches in the first batch. Watches are just one of a variety of “wearables” which mobile companies are trying to sell to customers to use with their phones. So far, the most successful wearables have been fitness trackers: bands that measure heart rate, calories, sleep quality and other data and send it to an application on the wearer’s telephone. Curran said that about 90 million wearables were sold in 2014. He forecast that figure could soar to 200 million this year. The companies refused to cite consumer prices for the new products. Top-end smartphones and smartwatches typically cost several hundred euros.

touch with passengers via their mobile phones or a website, for rides at budget rates. The launch in Spain last April sparked angry protests by Spanish taxi drivers. A judge in December banned UberPOP from operating in Spain while the court examines a lawsuit by taxi drivers, who say drivers offering rides via Uber are not qualified. Founded in 2009 in California, Uber has grown fast, luring passengers away from regular taxis. It operates in 200 cities in 54 countries. But it has also been targeted by legal cases in the United States and several other countries, including India, Thailand and France.

For the moment the Spanish version of the app is only available in Barcelona. The company said the app will connect customers with restaurants already licensed to make home deliveries. Some of the delivery staff will be drivers who offered rides via the taxi app before it was banned. The company said it will make sure drivers pay their taxes on their earnings to see off criticism from those who accuse the company of fuelling the black market. “We hope the company’s image will continue to be what it should be, that of an innovative company that Printer Cartridges Refilled or Replaced helps the user,” the head of Refills from €5 including IVA Uber in Spain, Drop your ink cartridge in at one of these locations: Carles Lloret, Noah's Ark Camposol B (Near Post Office) said. LEGALITY OF PROPERTIES AND GRANTING OF DEEDS IN CAMPOSOL

This article has been written to help property owners in Camposol, in response to the amount of information received from several sources in the last few weeks and the number of people who have contacted us with their concerns. It has been a long time since we heard the first whispers about JUMASA going into liquidation. The legal and financial situation of the company is also well known, with a huge number of court cases and embargoes affecting any property in their name. Therefore, anyone who purchased a property from them must check the current legal status of the property at the Land Registry in order to avoid unexpected surprises in thefuture. Regarding the above, there could be one of the following situations: 1. Properties purchased as a resale from a private seller or directly from the builder and where a deed was granted, but for whatever reason the property was not fully registered at the Land Registry, and therefore is not registered under the name of the current owner. You need to register these properties under the name of the current owner as a matter of urgency and also check out any charges that may affect the property. It is very likely that the property is affected by an embargo placed on it while it was registered in the name of JUMASA. You need to act quickly. 2. Properties purchased by way of a private contract where there is no restriction preventing them obtaining a public deed and registering the property at the Land Registry under the name of the current owner. You need to contact a lawyer to get the deeds and register these properties in the name of the current owner as a matter of urgency, plus you must check out any charges that may affect the property. It is very likely that the property is affected by an embargo placed on it while it was registered under the name of JUMASA. You need to act quickly. 3. Properties purchased by private contract where the deeds were recently granted and therefore the property is subject to several embargoes placed on it while it was registered under the name of JUMASA. You need to contact your lawyer to remove the embargoes from your property. 4. Properties bought by way of private contract which do not have a building

licence and therefore it has not been possible to get them registered at the Land Registry, even though these properties were completed and are now occupied by their owners. This means that the property does not exist at the Land Registry and the plot on which it is built remains registered in the name of JUMASA. Every case must be evaluated individually but all is not lost and there are methods to legalise the property and therefore get it fully registered at the Land Registry in the name ofthe current owners. If we were unable to make the property legal, there is always a way to get the plot registered in the name of the owners and then act to make it legal and thus register the property, this makes sure that the property remains safe while we undertake the legal process. In this case the legal status of the property must be checked as it is very likely that we will find it has an embargo against it, which will be placed on the property when it is registered. Nevertheless, when there are embargoes affecting your properties it is very important to obtain your deeds and get them registered at the Land Registry to show that the property was purchased before the embargo took place. This is a matter of urgency. Once the property is fully registered in your name, then it is also urgent to act through the so called “terceria de dominio”. We need to highlight that this process is not necessarily costly as there is not always a court action required, it can be resolved through negotiation between both parties and by demonstrating in some way that the property was purchased before the date of the embargo. Most of the time the issuer of the embargo is able to cancel it on an amicable basis which as a consequence significantly reduces the costs involved. Finally, and with regards to the rumours about JUMASA, it is important to say that the best advice is to resolve the problem before the company starts the liquidation process, but you also need to know that even if the company does go into liquidation, all is not lost. It just makes the situation more complicated as you then need to take part in a court process. However, you have the same rights to your property as you had previous to the liquidation proceedings so your position can be defended by way of the legal process. Nevertheless, you should contact your lawyer if you have any doubts at all about the legal status of your property. He/ she will be able to apply for a “nota simple” and assess the

situation accordingly and then advise you if there is any legal action that needs to be taken. In conclusion, please seek qualified, professional, legal advice and always make sure you deal with certified lawyers. AGUILAS WELCOMES “THE KING” In support of local registered charity Helping Hands, the European Elvis Tribute Champion, Simon Patrick, finally came to Aguilas this month. The long awaited sell out concert began with guests enjoying a superb hot and cold buffet, followed by two magnificent performances by Simon, suitably justifying his title of Champion. With supporting professional DJ Steve King, the evening also included the usual raffle and a “Guess the Weight” of a specially made Elvis cake. A brief video portraying the passion, commitment and hard work by the charity was also featured. A total of a magnificent 1,063 Euros including donations was raised for which the team would like to thank all those who contributed. Based in Lorca and Aguilas, Helping Hands consists of a very small team of English Spanish, Belgian and German people, working hard to make a difference to the lives of animals and people alike. As with most charities, times are hard and they are struggling,

No-one was seeking out shade, that was plentiful. Sun-hats were a no-show.

While temperatures sail breezily towards 40 degrees on that whip-everything-offthe-table afternoon wind, the BBQ adds extra heat to the poor sod standing over it.

Parasols? Nah. Fly swatters? What are they? Sun tan lotion? Think not.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price

I recently went to a British BBQ. The first in over a decade. It started at 6pm on a Saturday, with tables still being erected, garden swing under construction, and the actual BBQ midassembly. We sat outside on comfy sofas and chairs, in the shadow of the house, the sun long gone across the other side of the building, me wearing a poncho, many others wearing boots, jackets, and jumpers, and by the time it came to move indoors, gloves, which were extremely useful for holding an ice filled Pimms overflowing with fruit and mint leaves. My only mistake;- forgetting to wear socks. It was, after all, still only early May, and despite having the feel of a uni-bar with the majority age group in that bracket, and heating tendencies of alcohol, it was pretty chilly. Food and alcohol flowed, the main aim of this event was to finish off all the booze taken to the actual house-warming a few weeks earlier. It struck me how different socialising in Spain is compared to your average UK ‘bash’.

everything becomes an effort, it feels like ‘Thigh Noon’ or ‘Bunfight at the OK coral.’

Insect repellent and burners not needed, despite being at the riverside. (The Tawe is not particularly noted for its abundance of swarming creatures except perhaps, on a match day when the Swans are playing, as the stadium sits alongside this stretch of water.) It was all relatively easy, lay out the food (no need for covers, no flies present) open the bottles, no worries of fruit flies in your drinks, sit back and enjoy. Sometimes, when I think of entertaining outdoors in Spain, I get an instant headache and a desire to go for a menu del dia instead. Everyone fighting for shade, sweat dripping down noses onto food, irritating insects of varying species coming at you in all directions, the incessant sound of ‘thwack’ as another one bites the dust, along with bits of potato salad landing on ceramic tiles just beckoning to neighbourhood ants ‘Come on in, the mayo’s lovely!’ As we progress into July and August and the invites say ‘3pm’ and the madness continues, the sun rises higher and

‘Would you like mustard on your sizzling burger, three salty-dog-sweatdrops, or an enormous Spanish wasp? Or maybe all three, there’s plenty to go around?’ British BBQ’s in Spain should really begin at midnight and re-named ‘Star Parties.’ Everything has gone to bed, except a few cockroaches and mozzies, the air is no longer blistering, the stars are out, lotion can stay at home, and the only thing you’ll need is long sleeves, long trousers, and super smelly insect spray. Plus a few lights, just for the moths, of course. We now know where we Live! Thanks to all those on B Sector who willingly assisted in fitting up all of the new and long awaited Street Signs. to join our Community Scheme. Sadly, the response has not been as brisk as we had hoped but we remain optimistic as funds continue to trickle in. Money received through subscriptions and other donations is the only way we can continue with the task of keeping B sector looking great. If you haven’t seen our Leaflet and/or would like to know more about the scheme, please contact us. (Details below) Current Progress We are currently in the process of clearing the scrubland alongside a number of roads and hope to get these areas laid to gravel before the really hot weather comes. The road leading on from B Sector Entrance to the Rambla will soon be completed and the road leading from the Dual Carriageway B4 toB7 is currently being worked upon. Thanks to Jacqueline Rees for her kind offer of a donation towards paying for the Bobcat to clear the area opposite B4. A few of the recently planted trees may not have survived the winter but we are monitoring their progress and have been assured by Pedro at the Garden Centre that any trees failing to thrive will be replaced. Recently we have had meetings with the PP and PSOE party candidates, prior to the elections, (at their request) to discuss the needs of Camposol relating to the upkeep and maintenance of the Public areas. We hope to see the points

raised entered onto their Manifestos. In the Autumn, depending on receipt of more funds, we hope to complete clearing the scrubland, lay membrane and gravel the remaining length of the road continuing on from B7 ending at the B9 roundabout. Illegal Withdrawals and Deposits! How sad it is that we find ourselves having to post either of these following notices! Two actions - both illegal - have caused us considerable dismay and disgust recently: No 1. - Three plant pots, complete with plants, have been stolen from the area surrounding the Joyce Stewart Commemorative Seat outside the CRA Cabin. - Unbelievable! and sadly, there is little we can do but replace them. No 2. - Our Working Party and the majority of sensible residents are getting increasingly irritated by having to clean up piles of Dog excrement left by thoughtless and irresponsible owners on pavements and areas of gravel we have laid. - Again, unbelievable, but there is something we can do about it! Not only is this activity UNACCEPTABLE AND ILLEGAL - the increasing number of flies that eat the mess and then spread it onto our food, means - it is also downright DANGEROUS! Los Palacios

Wow someone has really turned the temperature up over the last couple of weeks as we race to try and complete all the heavy work we have scheduled before summer arrives. During May the Memorial Park has been our main focus in preparation for the annual Well Dressing ceremony taking place on the 30th May. Both ends of the park have now been weeded and the area around the Well refreshed with new plants. As with previous years we anticipate around 120 people attending the event, including visitors from both Forget Me Not and MABS. Our group would also like to say a big thank you to Alan who whilst not a member of the gardening group,......... yet !! has painted and tiled the benches provided by the council in the Memorial Park area and in total Alan has now completed twelve of the benches in various locations which all look fantastic. The Circle Of Remembrance also in the Memorial Park has now been completed. Feedback from people visiting our

Facebook page and on the PYM site has been amazing, everyone feels we have really produced something to be proud of. Now that work has been completed, people will be able to have a plaque fitted to the circle in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us. This will then provide everyone with a special place they can visit to remember family members in a beautiful rose garden setting. Any Camposol resident interest in having a plaque fitted to the Circle Of Remembrance should initially contact the gardening group on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/5285 64140617103/?fref=ts In our Central Park area, all the stone has now been laid and an additional plant bed has been created, that is designed to help try and disguise the green bins on the edge of the carpark. The team have now moved onto the area immediately outside of the doctors surgery, whilst this area has always been well maintained, it looked a little dull and boring. Now four trees have been planted and four raised rock gardens are being created to provide colour and interest to an area visited by large numbers of residents on a regular basis. Hopefully all the work will be completed within the next two weeks. Peoples Park has also received something of a facelift, as this area was the focus for the whole team during a recent Sunday working party. Whilst already it looks so much better, this area will be work in progress for at least the

next twelve months. New paths and a planting scheme are all planned to help improve and develop this large partly neglected area. To help ensure the roads and footpaths are looking there best, the group have invested in three additional weed spraying back packs. The whole of Los Palacios has been divided into three and now the weeds will be sprayed even more often than ever before. We use the more expensive pet friendly weedkiller to ensure animals are not harmed, however assistance with providing the odd tank of water would be greatly appreciated by the sprayers should they run out whilst on your street. In the next couple of weeks the Palm Troopers will be starting to trim all the Pine and Palm trees in the communal areas for the second time this year. In total we have over 400 trees that need pruning on an ongoing basis. Finally we would like to thank all residents for there ongoing support, our volunteers give their time freely to help improve our home, please continue to support us in whatever way you can, your kind words of encouragement mean a lot to us and continued financial support really helps us make a difference.

Swimmer’s ear Swimmer’s ear is inflammation, irritation, or infection of the outer ear and ear canal. The medical term for swimmer’s ear is otitis externa. Swimmer’s ear may be acute or chronic. Causes Swimmer’s ear is more common among teenagers and young adults. It may occur with a middle ear infection or a respiratory infection such as a cold. Swimming in unclean water can lead to swimmer’s ear. Pseudomonas and other bacteria commonly often found in water can cause ear infections. Rarely, the infection may be caused by a fungus. Other causes of swimmer’s ear include: * Scratching the ear or inside the ear * Getting something stuck in the ear Trying to clean wax from the ear canal with cotton swabs or small objects can damage the skin. Long-term (chronic) swimmer’s ear may be due to: * Allergic reaction to something placed in the

ear * Chronic skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis Symptoms Symptoms of swimmer’s ear include: * Drainage from the ear -yellow, yellow-green, pus-like, or foul smelling * Ear pain, which may get worse when you pull on the outer ear * Hearing loss * Itching of the ear or ear canal Exams and Tests The health care provider will look inside your ears. The ear canal area will look red and swollen. The skin inside the ear canal may be scaly or shedding. Touching or moving the outer ear will increase the pain. The eardrum may be hard to see because of a swelling in the outer ear. Or, the eardrum may have a hole in it.This is called a perforation. A sample of fluid may be removed from the ear and sent to a lab to look for bacteria or fungus. Treatment

In most cases, you will need to use ear drops containing antibiotics for 10 to 14 days. If the ear canal is very swollen, a wick may be put into the ear to allow the drops to travel to the end of the canal.Your doctor or nurse can show you how to do this. Other treatments may include: * Antibiotics taken by mouth if you have a middle ear infection or infection that spreads beyond the ear * Corticosteroids to reduce itching and inflammation * Pain medication, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

Sponsored by Camposol Farmacia

* Vinegar (acetic acid) ear drops People with chronic swimmer’s ear may need long-term or repeated treatments to avoid complications. Placing something warm against the ear may reduce pain. Possible Complications The infection may spread to other areas around the ear, including the skull bone. In elderly people or those who have diabetes, a severe infection called malignant otitis externa may occur. This condition is treated with highdose antibiotics given through a vein. When to Contact a Medical Professional Call a health care provider if: * You develop any symptoms of swimmer’s ear * You notice any drainage coming from your ears * Your symptoms get worse or continue despite treatment * You have new symptoms, such as fever or pain and redness of the skull behind the ear Prevention These steps can help protect your ears from further damage. * Do not scratch the ears or insert cotton swabs or other objects in the ears. * Keep ears clean and dry, and do not let water enter the ears when showering, shampooing, or bathing. * Dry your ear very well after it has gotten wet. * Avoid swimming in polluted water. * Use earplugs when swimming. * Try mixing 1 drop of alcohol with 1 drop of white vinegar and placing the mixture into the ears after they get wet.The alcohol and acid in the vinegar help prevent bacterial growth. Health &Wellbeing only will eating the Mediterranean way help you feel more energized and help you lose weight, it can also have a meaningful impact on reducing your risk of disease. Here are the top five health benefits of following a Mediterranean Diet. #1 Lower blood pressure Perhaps you’ve upgraded your bread from white to whole wheat, but there is a whole spectrum of other whole grains for you to explore, including corn, oatmeal, quinoa, millet, spelt, brown rice, and barley. And why exactly would you want to do that? Because whole grains contain an amino acid known as glutamic acid, which studies have linked to reduced blood pressure. They are also good sources of soluble fiber, which can bind with cholesterol and help sweep it out of the body. (Fiber also helps you feel fuller longer, making you less likely to overeat.) To add a sense of adventure in to your whole grain odyssey, make it a point to try just one new variety a week, adding only your favourites into your regular menu rotation. #2 Reduced risk of colon cancer How many servings of whole grains do you eat per day? A huge new study that involved nearly 2 million people found that boosting your intake of high-fiber whole grains, like brown rice, barley and wheat, reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. The secondleading cancer killer in the U.S., colorectal cancer claims the lives of more than 50,000 Americans each year.According to the study, eating three and a quarter ounces of whole grains a day was associated with about a 20 percent lower risk. But that’s not the only reason to choose high-fiber foods. Research shows that a diet filled with fiber-rich foods may also reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity — and, possibly, the

overall risk of death. Fiber helps improve digestion and the absorption of nutrients, and it helps control the appetite by keeping you full for longer. The amount of fiber you should be getting each day depends upon your age and gender. Men 50 years of age and younger should consume at least 38 grams a day, while men over 50 should aim for at least 30 grams daily.Women 50 years of age and younger should consume at least 25 grams of fiber per day; those over 50 should aim for at least 21. #3 Lower risk of age-related brain damage Even though we associate brain damage with traumatic injuries like concussions and strokes, aging can also inflict its fair share of casualties. Kind of gives new meaning to the phrase “living dangerously,” doesn’t it? Luckily, eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet could help keep your grey matter intact.According to a recent study, a Mediterranean diet, loaded with fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, whole grains, fish and good fats like olive oil, is linked with better brain health and fewer age-related thinking problems. #4 Better heart health It’s true that eating a Mediterranean-style diet can help lower one’s risk of heart disease. But even if you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease, that doesn’t mean you have nothing to gain.A new study shows that Mediterranean-style diets can help prevent future cardiac events (like chest pains or

heart attacks) in people who already have heart disease. People who ate the most vegetables, salads and nuts, in particular, lowered their risk of repeat heart trouble the most — compared with those who ate the least of these heart-healthy ingredients. The key players of a Mediterranean diet include: plenty of unprocessed plant-based foods, like vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains; herbs, spices and olive oil instead of salt and butter; fish; and nuts — and very little red or processed meat. #5 Less risk of disease, in general When was the last time you went a whole day without eating any processed food? If you’re like most Europeans, you probably can’t remember. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer are among the top 10 killers of people in Europe—and they’re all linked to a diet of processed foods filled with fat, refined grains and sugar. To break the habit, try changing one processed food each day for something whole. The next week, aim for two a day —and continue until your diet looks more like it came from a farm than a factory.

Straight Down the Middle Golf Society Things are warming up On Wednesday 22nd April it was the turn of Paraleja Golf to be visited by the society, for their monthly Stapleford competition. Unfortunately due to family commitments, yours truly was unable to participate in this event, so I hope to convey some of the details as near to the truth as possible. The course was in good condition, although there are still a few bare patches on a few of the fairways. The day started with some members taking their breakfast, in order to set themselves up for the day, and for one of those it proved to be the fortitude that pushed him to the front of the list at the 19th hole.

Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS Mazarron returned to top form just in time to guarantee a place in the end of season play-offs. Six successive victories prior to the last home game of the regular season saw them finish in fourth position with a great chance of achieving promotion back to the

Preferente for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Whatever happens it will have been Mazarron’s most successful season since they finished sixth in the Tercera Division in 2008/09. A lot of the credit has to go to leading goalscorer Tolo. With one game remaining in the regular season he had scored 34 goals, ten more than his leading rival in the Primera Autonomica. In addition he is the leading scorer in all four of the leading Murcia region divisions, the Tercera, Preferente, Primera and Segunda. His goals came from just 30 appearances plus 1 appearance as substitute and he must now be one of the hottest properties in the region which is why it is important that Mazarron gain promotion this season if they are to hang on to him. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Once again, as the football season draws to a close, it has been an extremely busy year for Los Amigos de Mazarron F.C. The monthly luncheon club has gone from strength to strength and the April outing was a return visit to the Casa Colora in Leiva with over 50 members and friends in attendance. Then a party 50 travelled to Cartagena on 26th May for the visit to the Licor 43 Factory

The proposed strike involving Spanish clubs right down from La Liga to junior level threatened to disrupt not only the final league game at home to CD Lumbreras but also the play-off games. Fortunately, the Spanish Courts suspended the strike and the two-legged semi-final play-off games against either CD Juvenia or CD Esparragal will be played over the weekends of 23/24 May and 30/31 May with the Final, also over two legs on the weekends of 6/7 June and 13/14 June.

The end of season Player of the Year Function will take place at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf on Tuesday 2nd June. All the Mazarron FC players will be in attendance for this Function which sees the presentation of the Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Player of the Year Trophy as well as the Player’s Player of the Year trophy. Guests will enjoy a “deluxe” buffet and there will be dancing to round off the evening. Tickets cost 12€ for members and 15€ for non-members. Los Amigos members vote for their Player of the Match at every game and the player who has received the most votes at the end of the season will be awarded the coveted trophy. It should be a great night especially in view that this has been a much better season on the field of play. There are still some places left for the outing to the motor racing at the circuit in Cartagena on 18th July. A coach will be provided to leave Camposol at 5.15 pm in time for the start of racing at 7 pm. It is suggested that we take our own chairs and food for a picnic during the meeting. Other events being considered for the coming months include a third Los Amigos Go Kart Grand Prix at the circuit in Mazarron and a possible visit to the Golfdelux Mini Golf in Los Alcazares. For full details of all these events please call at our weekly Los Amigos meetings every Thursday (4 pm) at the Club House, Camposol Club

Los Amigos President Gerard Mulligan ends his two years of office in August and will be succeeded by Vice President Dave Perks. August also sees the AGM of Los Amigos and members who wish to put their names forward to join the Executive Committee should contact Secretary Barbara Marchant for a nomination form.

Camposol Club de Golf Monthly Update. Another Great Monthly Competition.

Los Amigos de Mazarron FC weekly meetings are held every Thursday at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. During July and early August, meetings are normally suspended as there is no football and a lot of members are away. However, some members still like to pop up to the Golf Club on a Thursday afternoon for a cool and refreshing drink. Full details of when the summer break is will be available in next month’s edition. In the meantime, why not come a long and join us for a drink in a friendly atmosphere and fantastic surroundings? Membership runs from 1st August each year and costs just 10€ but anyone joining between now and the end of the season can enjoy all the benefits of membership, which include reduced coach travel and reduced prices to most of our social events, until 31 July 2016. The SV Autobiography is designed to take the Range Rover to ‘another level of comfort, craftsmanship and refinement’, coming with luxurious seating and a chiller compartment The ‘special ops’ arm of JLR has fitted the Range Rover SV Autobiography with a powerful supercharged 5-litre V8 engine which develops a staggering 539bhp of pulling-power – equivalent to five Ford Fiestas. It is the sort of power normally found in an Italian supercar - and gives the off-roader a top speed of around 150mph. But JLR stress that it isn’t just about performance on and off-road. The SV Autobiography is designed to take the Range Rover to ‘another level of comfort, craftsmanship and refinement’. A spokesman said: ‘The SV Autobiography is the most luxurious and powerful series-production Range Rover in the model’s successful 45-year history.’ The unique front grille is finished in distinctive Graphite Atlas and polished chrome. Passengers in the back can relax in luxurious seating complete with a chiller compartment and powered deployable tables. Stowed in the boot and hand-crafted from Windsor leather, two seats can be deployed to provide comfortable chairs on the tailgate Solid aluminium coat hooks are incorporated into the rear pillars while, on the floor, aluminium seat rail finishers and deep twist pile mohair carpet mats add to the luxurious feel. The car also has what Jaguar Land Rover is calling ‘event seating’. Stowed in the boot and hand-crafted from Windsor leather, the two seats can be deployed to provide comfortable chairs for adults who want to sit on the tailgate. A spokesman for JLR’s Special

Vehicle Operations division said: ‘For the first time on a Range Rover, customers of

the 2016 Model Year SV Autobiography are able to specify a unique duo-tone body colour option. ‘The combination of Santorini Black upper body and nine colour choices for the lower body create true distinction and individualism. Prices for the Range Rover SV Autobiography start at £148,900 – or twice the cost of an entry-level Range Rover and around the same price as the long-awaited Bentley Bentayga 4X4, which goes on sale next year.

2018 BMW Revealed BMW has just revealed the facelifted 3 Series but the all-new next generation model is already in the pipeline for 2018

Much like with Volkswagen’s innovative MQB platform, BMW will design the next-generation 3 Series with electrification in mind. VW currently build the e-Golf and hybrid GTE on the exact same chassis as the conventional petrol and diesel models. It makes sense that BMW will follow suit – allowing for different, new propulsion methods in the not-too-distant future. It appears the idea of a driverless 3 Series is still some way off, according to Voigt, though. “When we believe it makes sense for the brand, and it fulfils the brand promise to our customers, we are going to strive for such assistance features. But it has to be consistent with the brand and the character of 3 Series.” Only time will tell whether we’ll see a fully autonomous small BMW in the next 10 years, though we already know the brand is testing its larger 7 Series to perform various features with minimum user input.

The Mk7 BMW 3 Series isn’t due until 2018, but development often begins years in advance – and the next generation saloon is no exception. BMW design chief, Karim Habib, said: “The spirit, the core, the soul of the BMW 3 Series will always be a sporty saloon. Connectivity will be key, but the 3 Series will always be driver focused, driver orientated.” It seems BMW won’t be as conservative when it comes to embracing new technology, then. Dr Christian Voigt, product manager for 3 Series, said: “You have to have a certain architecture to enable a pure electric vehicle. To not take this into consideration wouldn’t make for a robust strategy.”

Bond cars

is an unusual one for the series, as the Bentley Mark IV was almost 30 years old at the time of the film’s release. In several of the Ian Fleming novels, Bond had driven a Bentley 4.5 litre, which predated the Mark IV by two years. This was likely the inspiration behind its inclusion in the film.

Bentley Mark IV Bentley Mark IV - From Russia With Love Model: Drophead 3.5 Litre (1935) Bond Movie: From Russia With Love (1963) Synopsis: Bond’s car in From Russia with Love

Early on in From Russia with Love, Bond is shown picnicking alongside a river with Sylvia Trench. They are about to enjoy some Taittinger champagne when Bond is paged by HQ. He goes to the Bentley and calls Miss Moneypenny from the car phone. Before heading back to MI6, he brings up the convertible roof for some private time with Miss Trench.

Astronomical Traffic Fines In Madrid A VW Golf in Madrid has managed to rack up 266 fines worth a staggering €30,000 in just 5 years! During the crisis traffic fines were raised by 80%, however how one manages to incur €30,000 of fines is mind boggling! Other cars with hefty fines were a Citroen Xantia which has picked up 210 fines and a Mercedes-Benz Clase E with 186 since 2010. With repeat offenders so common – 1.2 million drivers penalised more than five times in the last five years according to a Fundacion Linea Directa study – are traffic sanctions really working? Hectic city life is clearly bad for drivers, as eight out of the 10 most ‘fined’ cars in Spain are registered at Madrid town hall. And the top 10 share an incredible 1,716 penalties between them. Speed is the issue – 50% of fines in Spain are for speeding, with illegal parking accounting for almost 40%.11

Property, Financial and Legal LAND REGISTRATION – ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS!!!! I thought it would be a good idea this month to talk about the importance of Land Registration. This is something which has been in force in the UK for quite a long time – in Spain it has only been in force for the last 20/30 years. Why is Land Registration important and what are the benefits? Transfer of ownership of land/property takes place by way of both parties signing an Escritura – registration of that document afterwards at the Land Registry (Registro) guarantees the class of title so that the person named in the document as the owner of the property can be sure that he is the only legal owner of the title. Also because his legal title to the property is registered, this is an independent record of property ownership - which is available for inspection by the world at large. As a result, a similar procedure is adopted in Spain (as in the UK) following the purchase of property ie stamp duty as appropriate is paid and then the documents are submitted to the

CAB650

Registro for the registration procedure to be carried out.

Once that process has been completed, the Registro will issue a “nota simple” being a copy of the Register showing the details of the new owners as well Legal & Financial Services as describing the property itself, plus The ONLY qualified and experienced UK any mortgages, thus an independent Lawyer in this area providing a comprehensive record of ownership range of services covering English and Spanish which is available matters including QROPS Pension transfers to for inspection by unlock your UK private pension other authorities and also “Joe Public”. We all know that For an initial discussion please telephone an Escritura is 634 053 976 the name given to or email:shirleyfisherlegalservices@gmail.com the document we understand as the Camposol Business Centre title deed and if the Calle Madrid 19, Sector A registration process Camposol, Mazarron was not completed, there would be no MURCIA 30875 guarantee of title or independent record.

Spanish Property Recovery Underway Now Says Government Official

Things are looking up for the Spanish property sector this year, claims Mario Garcés under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Public talking at a conference organised by the Spanish

He also said that the rental market will increase significantly, having gained two per cent market share compared to property ownership in the last 18 months. Garcés’s optimism is based on data showing a recovery underway, he said. House prices have started to rise, and sales are up, especially to foreigners. 21,300 new mortgages were approved in February, according to the latest data from the NIE, an annualised increase of almost 30 per cent, and the best month for mortgage approvals since 2011. Garcés was particularly optimistic about the prospects for the rental market following the recent reform of the longterm rental law (Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos in

Spanish). Owner-occupiers are 78 per cent of households in Spain, and rental tenants just 15 per cent, leaving the rental market lots of room to grow to reach anything like the levels of 50 per cent common in some other European countries like Germany. The percentage of Spanish households living in rented accommodation has increased by two per cent in the last 18 months. “We’re turning the property situation around,” said Garcés. “After considerable effort, we’re in recovery mode, and this is here to stay”. He also insisted that Spain must learn lessons from the past to avoid a repeat of boom and bust. Garcés also mentioned the recent Urban Reform and Refurbishment Law (Ley de rehabilitación y regeneración urbana in Spanish), introduced by his Ministry to encourage the refurbishment of the old quarters of Spain’s many historic cities. He claimed that some €2,400 million will be invested in property refurbishment in the next three years direct 50,000 jobs and 200,000 indirectly.

GOmaD Article for June By Anne Bennett

Wow, hasn´t the weather changed, it’s hot hot hot. Please remember that your animals cannot speak so you have to think for them keep them cool... remember DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS. This month saw Tamara, our cross GSD find her new home; she will be spending time both in Camposol and the UK. Tamara has been with us about six months having been found by one of our dearest supporters dumped in her garden. But as the saying goes “All’s well that ends well” Little Holly has been with me to Camposol on a Monday morning now for a few weeks, but I´m afraid that she will not be with me anymore, because she’s been homed, sorry but I know that a few of you were pondering about whether to adopt her but Judith has made the decision. Thank you Judith. Holly is just the most lovable girl. Also homed this month were five of our Guinea Pigs. We do still have two females left if you fancy a little squeaker. On the donkey front ...Salvador is lame at the moment so confined to a stable which he hates!!!! not sure how its happened but he does hoof about a lot, will let you know how he gets on Storm one of our horses that were looking for a home.....is now in Cartagena at the stables on trial for 2 more weeks ...and it’s looking very good. . Also this month saw a small week old pup left at the home of one of our shop ladies. Amanda kindly volunteered to bottle feed her; they had even hacked off her tail ....why on earth would they do that!!!!!! thankfully after antibiotic cream its now healed, little Tilly is now lapping and ready for her new home. It doesn´t stop there though, as two days later a sack was found outside our shop at opening time, inside the sack was a box and inside the box was four hours old pups all with their cords attached. Thank you Jody for taking two of them and hand rearing them, we just would not have coped with all four at our house, this was 3 weeks ago now the two girls and two boys are lapping and playing, they will be medium to large size, and will be ready for adoption as you read this. Ok folks that’s it for this month ....you can follow us on face book, and if you have any donations you would like us to have I’m on the carpark Camposol B Sec every Monday 11.30 to 1.30, for larger item we can arrange pick up.

On the Saturdays of 25th April and 2nd May we participated in Mazarrón Town Hall’s promotion of local charities, in Mazarron Town itself and in the Port of Mazarrón. We did this in conjunction with their Social Services department, with whom we work very closely. The objective was to make the general public aware of what we do and how is benefits the local

Charity organisations are, as such, quite a new concept in Spanish culture. It was mostly the work of the Church to provide such aid and assistance in the past. The increasing number of humanitarian charities has mainly come about because of “El Crisis”. A number of Spanish charities were represented at the event, including Spain’s Red Cross, La Cruz Roja, who supply aid and assistance in a variety of ways throughout our area, one of which is to provide a rescue team at all the major beaches along the coast. These promotional days will probably be scheduled every few months or so. Thanks to everyone who participated in this very successful initiative. We appeal, as always, for shampoo, toiletries like toothpaste and shower gel, nappies and sanitary towels. Many, many thanks to all of you who are generously supporting this long running appeal, our clients are so grateful to receive these extras on top of the food they are given. We are coming into the holiday season now and if after your holiday you have any left over suntan cream, shampoo, shower gel that sort of thing that you cannot take with you and would be discarding them in the rubbish bin, please think of us and put the items in a bag and place them in our Charity Bins at Quick Save on Camposol Commercial Centre B, or in the Port at The Tea Pot Café. We thank you in anticipation. Whilst we are looking forward to our Summer Garden Party this month, we are also planning for our next fashion show, so if you have any good quality ladies winter garments you no longer require, again, please think of us. Our bi-annual Ladies Fashion Show help us to raise a lot of money for our charity (and helps our supporters to have a much looked forward to afternoon too!) We thank you for your continued support for our worthwhile cause. Thanks for helping us to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Dracula was walking along the road one night when he heard a noise from up above. He looked up to see sausage rolls, vola-vents, cucumber sandwiches, chicken wings and all sorts of party food tumbling towards him. The food hit Dracula and knocked him to the ground. As he lie there dying he said “Oh no its Buffet the vampire slayer”. A salesman went to visit one of his clients and as he walked through the door he saw a dog cleaning up the office. As he watched, the dog vacuumed the room and empted the rubbish bins. The dog looked up and saw the man watching him and said to him “Don’t mind me, this is all part of my job”. The man looked at the dog in amazement and said “Wow a talking dog, does your boss know about this?” “Please don’t tell him” begged the dog “If he finds out about this he’ll have me answering the phones as well!” A man was driving along in his car when he reached a part of the road that had been flooded with water. The man hesitated whether to go through the water or not as he couldn’t tell how deep the water was. Just then he saw

Last month’s Suduko answers

an old countryman standing by the side of the road. “Excuse me sir” said the man “Do you know how deep the water is?” “Oh not very deep” said the countryman “You’ll be alright to drive through it.” The man set off through the water, but his car was engulfed with water and completely filled with water. The man scrambled out and back to the edge of the water. He turned to the countryman and said “You idiot! I thought you said that water wasn’t deep.” “Yes its funny that” said the countryman “It only reaches halfway up on those ducks over there!”

A man wanted to buy a dog so he looked in the local paper. He saw an advert which read “Pedigree Labrador for sale only £100”. He rang up the telephone number in the advert and arranged a meeting. When he arrived at the owners house, the owner showed the man into the lounge where the Labrador was lying in front of the fire. “Well what kind of pedigree does the dog have then?” asked the man. “Why not ask him yourself” said the owner. The man looked bemused but eventually turned to the dog and said “Well what sort of pedigree do you have?” “Well my mother was a winner at Crufts and my father was runner up” said the dog. “I was trained as a guide dog and after that I was trained to sniff out bombs for the bomb disposal squad” The man was amazed and turned to the owner and said “That’s fantastic, but why do you want to sell a talking dog?” “Because” said the owner “He’s such a liar!”

Q. How do you kill a circus? A. Go for the juggler!!

A child asked his father, “How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.” I went into a record shop and asked, “do you have anything by the Doors?” The assistant said, “yes, a fire extinguisher and a bucket of sand. I went to the chemist and asked, “Can I have a comb please?” The man said, “Do you want a steel one?” “No,” I replied, “ My parents brought me up right I’ve got money.”

Answers to last month’s Riddles A: Answer: Tom puts one of his locks on the box with the ring in it. When Sally gets it she puts one of her own locks on the box and sends it back to Tom. Finally Tom takes his lock off of the box and sends it back to Sally who can then unlock her own lock and retrieve the ring. A: Miss the first time on purpose. If you try to hit John and do. Then Tom goes next and he will hit you and you will lose for sure. If you aim at Tom and hit him then John will go for you. If you miss on your first turn John will go for Tom for sure because he is a stronger player. If he hits him then it’s just you and John, but you are going first. If he misses him then Tom will hit John and it will be just you and Tom, but again in this case you are going first.
