JOURNAL
THE
Welcome one and all to the June 2016 edition of The Journal! We hope that you are all enjoying the warm weather as the summer begins in earnest! Dare I say that it is almost warm enough to think about taking a dip in the pool! As a rule of thumb, one can normally gauge how busy the summer in this area will be based on the queue for the carpark at Consum on Camposol. So if that is anything to go by then we are for a fantastic few busy months of happy holiday makers enjoying all that this wonderful area has to offer! We are in full summer swing this month, with the welcome return of The Triangle on Camposol B Sector, the St Nicholas Church Fete, Monthly Mowtown and Soul nights at the Black Bull, El Faro, famous for its stunning views will be open DAILY from 15.30pm until late from the 9th of June and there is a whole new entertainment programme at Bar Med in El Alamillo, Puerto de Mazarron, and let’s not forget Camposol Club de Golf with its brand new summer menu! In addition to this there is lots more going on with live music and entertainment throughout the summer so be sure to check out the “Whats On” section of the magazine to keep up to date with current events. We all reach a certain age in life when we don’t like to be reminded that we are getting a year older, (No names mentioned Derek Miles!) That is unless you happen to be one of the area’s most well-known family businesses. We are of course talking about TJ Electricals on Camposol Sector B who are this month celebrating their 5th successful year of trading! To celebrate this landmark occasion, they have a very, very special offer for this month only! See their advert for more details! For those of you who fancy a bit of an adventure, and the experience of some centuries old Spanish tradition and culture why not head to the San Juan Festivals in Andalucia or Alicante? You can read more about it later in the magazine. The festival of San Juan is celebrated here in Murcia also, but seeming more so in our neighbouring provinces and well worth a visit for those looking to try something different! From everyone here at The Journal, have a fantastic June- and don’t forget the sunscreen! See you in July, Robbie Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

Vodafone Spain service revenues down 3.2% in Q4
Vodafone Spain reported service revenues of EUR 1.09 billion in its fiscal third quarter to March, down 3.2% on an organic basis following falls of 3.1% and 2.0% in the previous two quarters, with the strong performance of its fixed line business offset by the continuing slowdown in mobile and the impact of handset financing. Service revenues for the full fiscal year to March were EUR 4.47 billion, down 3.5%. However, the operator was keen to emphasise that EBITDA accelerated 4.2% year-on-year with a 1.3 percentage point increase in the EBITDA margin, thanks to cost controls and the greaterthan-expected synergies from its acquisition of broadband operator Ono.
Total mobile service revenues fell 8.0% in the first 3 months of the year even though the customer base grew to 14.32 million from 14.18 million in the yearearlier quarter, with contract customers now representing 78.7% of the base after Vodafone added 334,000 over the past year. The company said it was seeing signs that ARPU is beginning to stabilise,
coming in at EUR 16.0 compared to EUR 16.9 a year ago, aided bu its ‘more-for-more’ pricing strategy, in which customers receive higher data allowances and additional features such as free European roaming in exchange for an increase in the monthly tariff. The operator’s 4G coverage reached 91 percent of the Spanish population at 31 March, with the 4G customer base rising to 5.4 million. Vodafone’s fixed line performance was again helped by the successful integration of Ono, posting a 7.8% year-on-year revenue rise, supported by consistent growth in broadband net additions. Total fixed broadband customers passed the 3 million milestone for the first time, reaching 3.02 million compared to 2.81 million a year ago, nearly 2 million of them fibre subscribers. Around half the broadband customers – 1.5 million – had subscribed to the Vodafone One converged service launched a year ago. Vodafone’s high-speed fibre or cable service now reaches 8.5 million Spanish households thanks to its joint fibre network build with Orange. The operator added that its TV customer base rose by 271,000 to 1.06 million on 31 March, a 34 percent increase compared to Q1 2015.

Ryanair flight Liverpool-Alicante declares mid-air emergency A Ryanair flight from Liverpool declared a mid-air emergency after a passenger fell ill. The plane, flight number FR9886, was on its way to Alicante but declared the emergency while it was flying over Spain. Online flight tracker site Flightradar24 showed the plane was been diverted to
Bordeaux in southern France. The in-flight alert was the general emergency number 7700. A Ryanair spokesman said: “This flight from Liverpool to Alicante diverted to Bordeaux after a customer became ill on board. “The crew called ahead to request medical assistance,
the aircraft landed normally and the customer disembarked and was met by medics for further treatment. “The aircraft departed to Alicante shortly afterwards and Ryanair apologised to customers for the short delay to their flight.” The flight left Liverpool at 6.45am. It comes just three weeks after another Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Alicante was forced to make an emergency landing in Limoges, central France, so two drunk passengers could be arrested.

Orange Spain launches international calls app
Orange Spain has launched a new app dubbed Blablablapp that promises international calls up to 70 percent cheaper than competing services. Unlike rival VoIP services such as Whatsapp and Skype, Blablablapp calls are made over standard mobile networks, increasing connection quality and meaning recipients don’t need to install any app or have internet or Wi-Fi access to receive calls. The new service is “a complementary business prompted by the competition posed by OTT operators to traditional telecoms operators in the segment of international calls from Spain,” said the head of Orange Spain’s international wholesale business Jose Antonio Serrano in an interview. The free app is available now for Android
and iOS users and offers calls to over 200 countries starting at 1 eurocent per minute plus 25 eurocents for the setup. Up to 100 minutes of international calls are included for free, with top-ups of at least EUR 5 lasting for six months. In addition, every user who invites a friend will be given EUR 2 free credit for future calls.

Gibraltar’s full membership to the EU have seen the UK independent territory become the operational home to more than 30 online betting operators. With over 4000 sector employees the online gambling industry remains Gibraltar’s largest employer (population 32,000). Speaking to industry legal news source Gambling Compliance, various Gibraltar gambling stakeholders have shown their support for the “Gibraltar Stronger in Europe” campaign. Pro-Europe supporters argue that Gibraltar’s economy will be better served remaining in Europe, whilst EU laws strengthen against potential hostile constraints placed by neighbour Spain. From an online gambling operator perspective, EU business policy attached to free-trade has served against member state sector protectionism favouring national monopolies. Online gambling operators licensed in Gibraltar have been able to contest against various EU member states for implementing unfair/uncompetitive market conditions, with the European Court of Justice acting as a referee.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex.

Let us see some examples.
change lanes. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com
1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you

We are approaching the end of the term for Gina Barker’s Presidency of the Mazarron Bahia Lion’s. During the past year fund raising has been undertaken for a number of causes which include funds raised by the STRIDES sponsored walk to send young diabetic children to a camp during July. Also during the year there have been several events to raise funds to help MABS provide a second Hospice room, this is an ongoing project as they need €16,000 to cover the room. Our latest project, which
we thought would take us 2 to 3 months, was to raise funds for an orthopaedic bed for a 3 year old girl, Marina, from La Raya. Due to the wonderful network on Camposol , Jenette Flowers contacted charities to see if anyone needed an orthopaedic bed which a neighbour no longer required, the neighbour donated this to the Lion’s . Noah’s Ark stored the bed for us until we could arrange delivery and for Jackie Galves to accompany to translate. When linen was bought in ‘Branded‘ on Camposol for the bed not only did they give a discount but also donated extra bedding. What great people, of all nationalities, there are around the area, who help with raising funds for worthwhile causes either by donations or attending functions and events. The Lions are sending €1000 to the

At this point we would also like to say a massive well done to the Leos of Mazarron Bahia for their award as the best club in Spain. What a credit this is to themselves, their Leaders and their Parents, their enthusiasm is an inspiration to us all. Upcoming events include our Presidents Night on the 25th June, entertainment with Scott James, at Mariano’s, to include 3 course meal, €15. Technology it rubs up against some of that fipronil-tainted fur. The poison attacks Jumpy McFlea’s nerve cells, binding to receptors meant to receive signals that keep the critter’s nerves sort of relaxed. The bug’s nervous system goes hyperactive, and within 30 minutes it convulses to death. Pauvre petite nuisance ‌
New High Tech Frontline Plus for your Pets If you want to learn a thing or two about killing bugs, look no further than the classic extermination PSA, Aliens. Step one: Duct-tape a bunch of different weapons together. Step two: Destroy the infestation at every life stage, from egg to queen. Frontline Plus gets it. The chemical cocktail you apply to your furry best friend’s back uses a double tap—fipronil zaps flea and tick nervous systems, and S-methoprene keeps flea eggs from hatching—bound together with a secret blend of inert chemicals. Applied monthly, Frontline Plus should free you from using the nuclear option— flea baths. Let’s rock!

Fipronil Fluffy and Spot can thank the French for the end of weekly flea baths. Almost three decades ago, chemists working for French pharma Rhône MÊrieux (now known as Merial) noticed that its fipronil-based flea killer was lethal for a lot longer than expected. Turns out, fipronil is fat-soluble and accumulates inside the oil glands that animals have on their skin. Once absorbed, this insecticide leaks out of the glands slowly, coating strands of your best friend’s fur. Along comes a tick or flea, looking for a blood fix. Instead,
S-Methoprene Tick eggs aren’t a problem for pets, since they fall off before they lay eggs. But a female flea can lay about 50 eggs a day in an animal’s fur, and in the concentrations here, fipronil can’t scramble them all. So Frontline deploys this harmless-to-mammals chemical. S-methoprene seeps into the egg, where it pretends to be a hormone that keeps the bug baby from attaining its next developmental stage. Like a logic error, the chemical imposter interrupts things and baby-flea. exe crashes. Inert Ingredients Around 80 percent of the contents of Frontline Plus are not frontline combatants. That portion consists of chemicals like glycol ether and ethanol, which keep the fipronil and S-methoprene stable. Since they’re inert, Merial doesn’t have to disclose much about these substances. One thing we do know: Without them, Frontline Plus would be less vigorous at vanquishing those tiny vampires. Go Back to Top. Skip To: Start of Article.
Hoverboard
After many fits and starts, and nearly three decades since Mary McFly departed for the future, the hoverboard is here. Sort of.
In the past few years, humanity’s come tantalizingly close to the future Back to the Future Part II previewed back in 1989. Putting aside the rolling, exploding toys that somehow usurped the name hoverboard, there’s Hendo Hoverboard, which is restricted to maneuvering over conductive copper floors. The Lego-like ArcaBoard, which went into production last month, can
float about 20 inches above the ground. Too bad it costs $20,000 and offers a range of about a mile. But Franky Zapata’s Flyboard Air hovers, and then some. In April, Zapata used his invention to fly, Green Goblin-like, for a record-breaking 7,388 feet. The French professional jet skierturned-Master of the Sky has flown his invention up to 55 mph and reached 90 feet in the air. And he says the Flyboard Air can do better than that, promising 100 mph and a oxygen maskencouraging 10,000 feet. It can only run for 10 minutes at a time, and it’s more a clever application of jet technology than anything groundbreaking. But it’s the closest anyone’s come to delivering on the hoverboard

moniker. If this crazy hoverboard is real, then the future is now. The question, then, is what we do with that future. The answer: nothing nearly as practical as cruising around Hill Valley or fleeing a gang of bullies. Yes, this thing is (presumably) a major load of fun. The future of personal transportation it is not. The Flyboard Air’s secret sauce is actually pretty straightforward. Four turbojets provide a blustery 1,000 horsepower, enough thrust to keep a rider suspended and zipping along. Those are controlled by complex logic systems, which make constant adjustments between the jets to keep the board stable (quadcopter drones use similar tech). A handheld remote serves as a throttle. The A-1 kerosene that keeps the turboengines moving sits in what we’ll call a jet fuel pack, on the rider’s back. And there’s Zapata himself, who controls the 44-pound board’s direction with his body weight, and spent 50 hours on the thing before he could ride it comfortably. He says it’s not unlike riding a bike. Well, if riding a bike required strapping jet fuel to your back, risking broken bones with every spill, and dedicating a good week to learning how to just get down the street. For the casual hoverboard-lover, the Flyboard Air has a few downsides. Though the device can be flown over almost anything, it’s best used in people-free zones. Standing less than a meter away from the Flyboard Air for more than a few seconds, Zapata says, will feel like “if you put a dryer too close to your skin.” The hoverboard also faces some serious serious red tape. It has been pointed out, riding the Flyboard Air would run (or fly?) afoul of traffic laws in major cities like New York and London. Zapata says he’s hoping to start

working with regulatory officials in France to get the hoverboard the official rubber stamp there. Then there’s the price. The board took four years and $1.1 million to research and develop. Zapata’s company has only built two so far, so he hasn’t yet put a tag to the Flyboard Air. To catch a glimpse at the device’s more immediate future, it’s instructive to look at another product from Zapata’s company, the Flyboard Sport. Since 2011, this $6,600 proto-jetpack has been the vacation amusement of choice for folks like Justin Bieber and the Kardashians. The Air might not hover from the tree. As Scott Aughenbaugh, who studies the near future for the DC thinkthank the Center for Strategic and International Studies, puts it, the hoverboard may begin as the perfect toy for “a billionaire who already has five helicopters, and wants a cool way to get from A to B.” Zapata is definitely embracing the hoverboard’s recreational possibilities. He’s hoping to organize a Red Bull Air Race-like competition for flyers. “My goal is to ride the clouds,” he said.
hoverboard prototype. In 2010, Darpa announced it was funding flying jeep research. In the age of roadside IEDs, urbanizing warfare, and sporadic firefights, suddenly going airborne could be nifty. Or maybe not: “The enemy would hear you coming, what with the noise of the board and the accompanying heavy metal music,” says Peter W. Singer, a political scientist who specializes in 21st century warfare. “A lot a lot” of people want to buy the Flyboard Air, Zapata says. You can see why: Not because it’s the future of transportation. Because it’s completely awesome.
Zapata says he’s also received some interest from the military, though declines to say who has reached out. Maybe it’s not too far a stretch. Dubai announced it would arm its high rise-scaling firefighters with legit jetpacks last atumn. Back in the 50s, the US army released a janky

Spain Festivals in June “Noche de San Juan”
Certain festivals seem to summarise life in Spain, with its love of having a good time in the company of friends and loved
ones. The Night of San Juan is definitely one of these events. It is a celebration that is usually held on the beach with roaring bonfires, drink, food, and friends. It is a memorable, almost surreal scene and one that needs to be experienced. The summer solstice remains a
page 32
magical night in much of the northern hemisphere. Mythology states that strange things can occur on this shortest night of the year. Certain pagan gods, for instance, make themselves visible during this night and we mere humans also give thanks and realise that the seasons of harder times are still to come. So welcome to the magical night of San

Juan. San Juan is all about changes. It is about night and day; fire and water. Fire purifies and water recuperates, refreshes, and rejuvenates. Bonfires are the theme of the night. Men and women, young people and children all spend time building these bonfires. According to tradition, if people jump over a bonfire three times on San Juan’s night, they will be cleansed and purified, and their problems burned away. In Andalucia, San Juan is celebrated on the night of June 23rd with some towns, such as Almuñécar, in Granada, allowing the beaches to be used as campsites for a single night. On the beaches of Malaga it’s common to see people jumping over fires which, according to legend, cleanse the body and the soul. Jumping in the sea at midnight is supposed to be a way to wash away evil spirits. It is ritual that rules at San Juan. After midnight, for example, people wash their faces and feet three times in order to be granted three wishes and for a happy twelve months thereafter. Bathing at this time is also said to be beneficial for skin complaints. Traditionally, the Spanish did not visit the beach until this day in each year. The sight of hundreds and even thousands of people wandering into the water after midnight with the haze of bonfires everywhere can be close to awe inspiring. As well as the bonfires that burn continuously, there are also muñecos or dolls that are burnt. This is usually done around midnight. Originally, the effigies were supposed to represent Judas Iscariot but now, the religious relevance seems to have become secondary to the enjoyment factor. Quite often the dolls are made up to represent local or national personalities who are famous (or sometimes infamous). The burning of these effigies is supposed to bring good luck but quite often, it is just good fun and it makes a great spectacle. Some of the effigies can be quite elaborate. Depending where you experience San Juan, you might find yourself almost entranced by the spectacle. In some places, hundreds upon hundreds of fires dot the coastline. The smell of smoke permeates the air and there is a feeling of camaraderie that crosses age, culture, and background. So make sure that you reserve the night of June 23rd for La noche de San Juan. Bring plenty to drink, something to eat, carry a sweater if you are going to be near the water, and be prepared to see the sun rise on the morning of the 24th. They’ll go armed with thousands of peel off pricing stickers to increase the price of all those perfume bottles and other cheap worldly goods while changing the name of Marks & Spencer to Munoz & Santos.
Dawn Llewellyn-Price This month will be a milestone in the lives of British ex pats as the UK population go to the polls in a European Union decision that will probably affect everyone living in Spain. To what extent remains to be seen. In, Out? It’s all so crystal clear to clairvoyants who charge a fiver. Just how could it affect life in Spain should it be a ‘leave’ vote? Well, Spanish forces will no doubt rush in and grab Gibraltar the moment the result is announced, as promised recently in the Media.
Soldiers in their battle fatigues will be found sitting on the steps of perfumeries, real guns slung loosely at their sides, helmets askew as they tackle bottles of Joop! and L’air du temps with a pricing gun or big, awkward fingers. ‘Arriba, arriba!’ they’ll gleefully shout as each box is doubled in price, and the treasurer will rub his hands gleefully from behind his desk in Madrid. Iceland will have it’s doors welded shut. San Juan, which coincides with the vote on the 23rd, will become, for one year only, the Bonfire of the Beans, as every available case of Heinz and HP will be hauled onto the beaches and used as fuel for the flames. Cans will spew into the sky as they reach maximum heat, and land in the sea with a screaming velocity, and save the Spanish a fortune on fireworks for that one night. What a
sight it will be! Forget the Elche Palm Tree, an enormous ‘57’ will light up the night sky. Pet Passports may become a thing of the past. Holidaymakers will have to leave their pooches at home, and pay those kennel fees. Ferry services will be suspended and the ships will be turned into nightclubs, with pay-by-the-hour cabins. The EHIC ‘tarjeta’ will be as much use as a library card in a lighthouse. Shorts, and British Beer Bellies will be banned and ex pats frogmarched to church every Sunday and forced to drink brandy in their morning coffee. Tea imports will be outlawed as a blight on the profits of the coffee industry. Ex pats will be tottering around tipsy before noon, with severe shakes due to caffeine overdose, and spilling their cervezas on tabletops throughout the land. Possibly nothing new.

Los Palacios Plans are well advanced for our Summer Fete to be held on July 16th. We have been working hard to improve the area directly in front of the commercial centre, to ensure everywhere looks at its best on the day. We have pruned all the trees, planted fresh flowers, painted some tired areas and swept the whole area in preparation for the day. Whilst final details are still being confirmed, during the day we will be holding a fashion show, the Leo’s will be helping us by providing a range of children’s activities and entertainment that will be announced shortly. We anticipate having 30 stalls in attendance providing a whole range of clothing, jewellery, cards and other select items for you to browse around. Music will also be provided to help create a great atmosphere by Bernie Mac. During the evening we plan to have four different live acts performing, Scott James, the Harlequin Rock Choir, Masquerade and Ukuleles “R” us. To ensure you guarantee a seat to enjoy the atmosphere contact either Tel’s, Cats or the Sabores bar to reserve your seat. The gardening group will be making a donation to both Help The Aged and the Leo’s from any profits generated from the

event. Elsewhere the volunteers have been working hard to complete the improvements to the area just below the doctors surgery. This has now been planted and membrane and gravel laid to help raise the profile of this once forgotten corner. On People’s Park the whole northern end has now been completed, including existing plants and trees pruned, new plants added, two new benches installed and the whole area gravelled. This area now looks fantastic and will be so much easier for the group to maintain in the future. We are also working hard on the Memorial Park, laying an additional 75 tonnes of gravel to help improve this large area that is the first thing visitors to Los Palacios see when they arrive. If you value the work we do please come along to our Summer Fete and help support us. Every single euro we raise will go towards continued improvements in our area. On behalf of the group, I would announce the sad passing of one of the groups earliest members GEOFFREY STONES. Geoff was a keen walker and golfer before his long illness and the group, subject to family approval would like to remember him with a plaque on the memorial circle of remembrance.
Camposol ‘B CLEAN’ What a wonderful time of year this is - when everything seems to take on a new spurt of life (including a few of us Old Folk!) All around us new colours continually appear, reminding us of the beauty that this arid area of Spain offers as it’s vegetation bursts into bloom. Wild plants seem to manage very well on their own, but sadly, as the warm weather intensifies, the plants and shrubs that we have chosen to place around our homes
and public areas need constant TLC. We in B Clean Gardening Group do as much as we can to keep the plants watered but being few in number, a little help with this task would benefit us all. With this in mind, may we request that everyone who enjoys seeing our sector in bloom takes on some responsibility to water any plants that are near their villa, or on route to the shops. If we all simply carried a couple of water bottles in our car in preparation, a good intention might become an activity that will keep Camposol blooming throughout the approaching dry summer months. We need more willing volunteers! The numbers coming forward to give help with the planting, weeding, litter clearing, watering, etc. are few. So, please contact us if you can offer some assistance. We meet every Tuesday morning for a couple of hours and each extra pair of hands makes a great difference. Since our last Newsletter we have tidied up and graveled around the roundabout and rambla bridge, and the road leading from the roundabout to B20. We hope to further improve this area with plants and trees at a later date. We have been asked to provide easier wheelchair access to the path we laid last month, leading from B5 to the Footbridge, and will be attending to this matter shortly. Green Waste Bins The bins situated on the lower commercial centre car park have been replaced with yellow Skips and, presumably because they are easier to load, seem to have resulted in the area being kept tidier. Please join our ‘B Clean’ Community Group Scheme. Members subscribe regularly to a fund which pays for the ongoing costs of our sector’s upkeep. Without these funds ‘B Clean’ would not be able to function. We need more residents to join the scheme and subscribe just 5 euros a month to help us keep Camposol looking great. If you would like to add your name to the list of members, please contact Colin or Helen for details (See below.) The more subscribers we have - the better Camposol will look. All donations, whether in the form of money dropped into our collection buckets or unwanted plants, are very welcome and we thank all those who continue to assist us in this way. Come to our monthly meetings held on the last Tuesday of each month at Trevi’s 4 till 5 p.m. and tell us what improvements you would like to see happen on or near your poligono. For Information please contact: COLIN (Treasurer): 727 770 944 email BartonCC@aol.com HELEN (Secretary) : 968199506 email helenwhite522@gmail.com
D Group Camposol Gordon Cockburn was voted onto the D Group Committee as Vice President, by the members present at the bi-monthly meeting. We urgently need a Bucketeer Coordinator; if you can spare a little time for an excellent group of volunteers could you please contact Deesec1@outlook. com. Over the past 2 months our volunteer garden team have done magnificent work. The Community gardens along Calle Mentas D30, has had a complete refurbishment the work carried out by our volunteers on a weekly basis took 8 visits to complete. Calle Ajedreas D25 was cleared of weeds and rubbish and the 100 metre strip was prepped for planting later this year. The Notice Board garden area and the Jubilee garden on D20 also had a visit from our Garden Team. The Team had 2 consecutive visits to Calle Robles D7, this was a major project for the team, clearing the community garden of all manor of things, the residents are very happy with the work that has been achieved. Our Road Repair Team are doing a fantastic job on our roads and it is extremely hard keeping up with them filling in the many potholes, resetting curbs and concreting large areas on the roads around the sector. Both teams are responding to enquiries made through our website, e-mails and our Bucketeers on Fridays. At the moment the Road Repair Team budget is 400 to 500 Euros per month and the Garden Team depends on what is planned, the project on the D30 section, gravel and skip approx 1000 Euros. Without the generosity of our contributors and our bucketeers who collect our funds on Friday mornings we could not do anything. Five more benches have been located around the sector. Slow down road signs are being produced for the teams and the two chalk boards by D20 are being replaced and a new sign for our fundraisers and contributors. The Queens Birthday celebration tea party held at the Golf Club was a great success, a good afternoon was had by all. Our Hog Roast on the 8th May on D34 was very enjoyable and thankfully the weather was good, the seventy guests are looking forward to next years roast. First Non-Invasive Triple Heart Bypass in Spain Carried Out in Murcia New technology and science has led to amazing accomplishments by doctors and surgeons in hospitals across the globe. And no doubt, this will continue to be the case for many years to come. Spain has some of the best medical professionals in the world, and leads all other countries when it comes to the number of organ transplants carried out in a year.
While this type of operation had already been carried out in other hospitals in the country, it had only been achieved by bypassing two coronary arteries using this method.

time in Spain that a triple heart bypass has been successfully performed using non-invasive surgery, and, in fact, very few centres in the world do actually offer this type of service. Therefore, the Arrixaca hospital in Murcia holds a very privileged position. This new type of procedure is achieved just by making a small incision on the left side of the thorax, rather than opening the heart up completely. The patient was a 56-year-old man, and after the operation he was sent home. He is now in a good state of health and improving each day.

Reiki Universal Life Force Energy There are many alternative healing
therapies, and Reiki is one of the most powerful, ancient, popular and yet easy to learn. Traditional Reiki has its roots in nineteenth century Japan, and yet “laying on of hands” healing techniques go back to ancient civilisations. “Ki” is the Japanese term for life force energy, and this is the basis of Reiki. Whilst it is not a religion and “belief” is not required for a healing to occur, usually the best results are when the recipient is open and relaxed to receiving, and gives permission before a treatment begins.
Reiki at the Yoga Shala Are you Reiki attuned? Then come and join us at the Yoga Shala in Isla Plana each week for a Reiki share! This is a great way to practise your Reiki and receive a healing in beautiful surroundings and meet up with Reiki friends. No need to book – just turn up Each Monday at 6pm starting from 30th May lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354
Reiki complements other forms of healing and has become more mainstream in recent years with Reiki healers being invited into hospitals to work alongside teams of conventional medicine practitioners. A Reiki healer will have their hands lightly touching or just above the recipient in order to channel energy to them, and this energy boost helps the body heal itself – a bit like charging a battery. A Reiki healing session is non-intrusive and can work on different levels – physical, emotional or spiritual – to provide healing wherever it is needed, and no two Reiki sessions are the same. Reiki primarily works through boosting the chakras – the energy centres of the body - thus making it an ideal partner to yoga.
healing system it is also excellent for animals who are usually very receptive, and it can even help your plants grow! Anyone can learn Reiki, and no previous healing training , experience or equipment is required. An entry level course takes half a day and enables “hands on” healing techniques straight away. This is great for self-healing, personal healing, group healing and reiki shares, and like all skills practice is important. Reiki does no harm so you can treat yourself or friends to an energy boost as often as you like! At the Yoga Shala we can offer Reiki healing sessions and courses with experienced Reiki Masters Janice and Kathy – get in touch for more details and to book. Sports On a beautiful sunny 27th April, with virtually no wind, the society members arrived at Camposol Club de Golf for the monthly stapleford competition. The course is an ever improving picture, and with plenty of water being applied, the fairways and greens present a good test to all levels of golfer. As the players moved around the course it was reported that a lot of the local wild life had come out to see what was going on!!. Large lizards were spotted on the 9th, and 3 terrapins decided to sunbathe on the sides of the lake on 16. When all the cards were checked, 11 players had better than 30 point scores. The winner was John Dowgill with a score of 40, followed closely by Mike Harrison, and Clive Hathaway on 39 points. The nearest the pin winners were Nick Powell, and John Brown. John Brown is pictured collecting his trophy for winning last year, as he was unable to attend the presentation evening held in February. The June meeting will be held at Paraleja Golf on Thursday 22nd. Interested members and guests welcome. Geoff Sharp hatters45@msn.com
Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C
LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC Los Amigos de Mazarron FC is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. As the ex-pat community in the Mazarron area grew, small groups of football fanatics started following the local football team, Mazarrón Football Club. They got together and formed a supporters club. An inaugural meeting was held in 2006, attended by a mere 14 people. A meeting was then arranged with Mazarrón Football Club which was attended by club officials including the President. This heralded the start of a friendly, close and on-going relationship with Mazarrón Football Club. The name Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC (the friends of Mazarrón Football Club) was adopted and, in the months that followed, a lot of work was put in to ensure the success of this club. A ‘Player of the Year’ award was presented and an end of season dinner dance was enjoyed by supporters and representatives of the football club. By the end of the 2005/2006 season, membership had grown to 45. It was agreed that Los Amigos would also support the Mazarrón junior football teams and training equipment i.e. bibs, balls and kit bags, were presented at the start of the 2006/2007 season. Membership continued to increase to well over 100 and coach travel was provided to all the away games at a time when away support of Spanish clubs was virtually unknown. Season 2006/2007 saw Mazarron promoted to Segunda B for the first time in its 80 year history. However, success was short lived and we were relegated the following season. Los Amigos continued to organise social events for it members and their guests and introduced a 100 Club to supplement other fund raising efforts. However, despite finishing a creditable sixth in the Tercera Division in 2008/2009, the impact of relegation and the withdrawal of the sponsor, San Antonio, brought increasing financial pressures. The summer of 2009 almost saw the demise of Mazarron Football Club. Stories of unpaid bills and players not being paid had been circulating for some time. Certain players then took action against the Club to recover unpaid wages and the Club was unable to find the necessary monies to pay the league registration fee to the Murcia Football Federation for the 2009/2010 season. At the last minute Los Amigos stepped in to make an emergency payment to the Club and also provided the playing kit for the forthcoming season. Without this intervention there is little

doubt that the Club would have folded. The Executive Committee of Los Amigos then redoubled its efforts to ensure that it could continue to assist in preserving the long term future of Mazarron Football Club. Many social and fund raising events were organised and it was agreed that an annual Gala Evening and Dinner would be held, attended by a celebrity guest speaker from the sporting world. The first dinner was held on Tuesday 9 February 2010 when Dave Bassett was the speaker. The event proved to be a tremendous success and raised over €2000 as well as attracting huge publicity and further enhancing the profile of Los Amigos. Two subsequent relegations in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons saw Mazarron playing in the Primera Autonomica at the start of the 2012/13 season and they had to rebuild with a team comprising of mainly local players supplemented by a very strong youth set up which today has teams from the ages of 6 to 18 years playing in league competitions. The success of the annual Gala Dinner together with other fund raising activities organised by Los Amigos meant that the supporters club was able to continue its financial support to the Football Club. The Gala Dinner and associated events alone have raised over €21000 since its inception in February 2010. Slowly but surely the efforts of the Club President Jose Rodriguez to take Mazarron FC forward started to show some reward. Two seasons of consolidation in the Primera Autonomica were followed by promotion via the play-offs back to the Preferente Autonomica in the 2014-15 season. Throughout the difficult times the support of Los Amigos has never wavered - there are now over 150 members who enjoy an active social programme in addition to continuing to support the Football Club at both home and away games. Among the events that members have enjoyed in the past couple of years are go karting, bowls, a visit to motor racing in Cartagena, quiz nights, a two night trip to Valencia, regular luncheons, an annual President’s Ball featuring top acts from the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida region and, of course, the annual Los Amigos de Mazarron Player of the Year Function which is attended by the players and staff of Mazarron Football Club. The Presidents Ball this year will be extra special as it will celebrate ten years of Los Amigos and a wonderful programme has been lined up. The event will be at Mariano’s on Tuesday 28th September and Queen Universe will provide their very own tribute to

Queen with comedian Justin Sane also presenting his unique brand of comedy. With a local magician performing close up tricks at the tables and a typical Mariano’s supper it promises to be a great evening. Tickets are €15 including supper or €10 without food and will be on sale at the weekly Los Amigos meetings or email pamada.1130@yahoo. co.uk. As the 2015/16 season draws to a close, at the time of writing Mazarron FC are still in with a chance of a second successive promotion via the play-offs, this time to the Tercera Division of the Spanish League. Results faltered somewhat in recent weeks with too many drawn games but hopes are still high that promotion can be achieved. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC weekly meetings are held every Thursday at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. Los Amigos membership runs from 1st August each year and costs just 10€ which includes reduced coach travel and reduced prices to most of our social events including the very successful monthly luncheon club. For a membership form, more information and details of all our activities either call at our weekly meetings or email pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk.
A Game of 3 Halves The first International Bridge Tournament was recently held at Restaurante Rincón de Elias on the Bolnuevo paseo. It was organised by the Mazarrón Bay Bridge Club (MBBC). The MBBC would like to thank Leen (pronounced “Lane” as in Penny Lane) and JVB (pronounced John Van Beek) who were responsible for proposing and setting up and running the event. Smaller thanks also go to Phil, Anita, Jon (no”h”) and Leicester City for their brief contributions.
receiving the magnificent trophy.
The defining moment might have been the small slam (6 hearts) bid and made by Pieter (pronounced “Peter” in English), which was matched by Jean (middle name Melody) on the British Team. After totalling the scores, the teams (32 players) were joined at lunch by 11 partners, husbands, wives, friends and relations including an 18-month granddaughter of Paula. You can never start too early to learn Bridge. She even brought her own “dummy” (boom, boom). Rincon put on a great lunch as always; helped by lashings of red wine and the trophies were handed over. A large one for the winners and a tiny one for the runners up. Score Europeans 220, British 229. MBBC play Bridge on Mondays and Thursdays at 09:30 hours at Hotel Playa Grande, on the road from Puerto de Mazarrón to Bolnuevo. At the time of writing Mazarron (the team is known as Mazarron Miners) had just welcomed nearest neighbours Country Bowls B.C. to their home rink at Hacienda del Alamo. A local derby so to speak! Playing six rinks of Triples matches there were some big scores plus and minus for both sides but Mazarron Miners taking the match finally by 4 rinks to 2 and winning the cumulative shots count by 115 shots to 102. Overall this gave the result to Mazarron Miners by 10 league points to 4. All credit to Skip Brain Robertson with his team mates Colin Appleton at No2 and Janet Rogers at lead who extended their 100% winning record this far into the season. Other winners were Skip Nina McKenzie with Jim Coughlan and Barbara Tottey, Skip George Thompson with Harold Morris and Anne Macfarlane, and Skip Gordon Tottey with Doug Macfarlane and Gillian Morris. selected or who prefer to play social bowls without the tension of Inter Club competition, there are Club Days on Tuesdays and Thursdays organized as random roll-ups with visitors welcome at any time. On Saturday 15th June at Hacienda there will be a friendly game followed by a BBQ with the British Legion. Before that, however, and most importantly, on Sunday 12th June starting at 11.00 am at the Club’s bowling rink at Hacienda del Alamo, there will be an organized Open Day which is open and free to all who care to come along. The idea is to introduce the sport to newcomers who might then discover a new social sporting pursuit and hidden skills. There will be Members on hand to answer questions and demonstrate the game with all equipment needed including bowls to let everyone have a go. Refreshments will be available at the rink Cafeteria. The Club will be pleased to welcome everybody who comes along- - all that is needed is a pair of flat soled heelless shoes ideally or at least soft shoes without heavy treads. There will also be a stand at Camposol market on Thursday, 9th June, to answer any queries. New Radars That Detect Seat Belt and Mobile Phone Use Have Arrived in Spain There aren’t many things that you can do these days outside in the street without being seen on camera! And with technology advancing as rapidly as it is, new methods of controlling what’s happening on our roads are being introduced all the time. The days of doing something that you really shouldn’t be doing and getting away with it are more or less long gone, so if you are in the habit of doing any of the following, now’s a good time to stop unless you want to get caught and fined. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) announced at the beginning of the year that it would be launching a new set of state-of-the-art radars that would be capable of detecting whether a driver is driving too fast, is wearing a seat belt or is using a mobile phone whilst in motion. Now the Traffic Department has announced that the installation of these new radars started last week. For the time being, we’re just talking about a total of 70 of these new-generation devices that will be installed in various points across the country. By the end of the year, the plan is to have 200 of them monitoring the roads in Spain. These radars are all part of the DGT’s campaign to detect other types of infractions committed at the wheel other than the norm of driving at an excessive speed. And the new radar systems are so advanced that they can identify all sorts of activities that drivers shouldn’t be doing at the wheel, and take multiple photographs at the same time. These new radars work differently to the ones that we are used to, and it is worth taking note that these more advanced devices work without the use of a flash of any type. This is because that the technology used in based on infrared photography, meaning that it works at night, in misty weather or in darkened interiors. Although the radars are being installed this week, a test period has been put in place until 1 June. After this date, drivers will begin

Harris said he believed Cameron was buying the blue Nissan Micra, which had 92,000 on the clock, for his wife Samantha. “He looked it over just like any bloke off the street, but not someone with mechanical knowledge,” he said. to receive sanctions for any of the infractions mentioned above if they are caught by the new radars.
David Cameron buys £1,500 used car for wife Samantha When car dealership boss Iain Harris got the call from David Cameron’s security team that the prime minister was about to call in to buy a used blue Nissan Micra, he thought it was his mates winding him up. Harris, owner of Witney Used Car
Centre, said he was asked if he would mind staying open for an extra half an hour on Friday night so the prime minister could look over the secondhand car, which cost £1,495.
“I think he must have seen it on the internet, a British-made car, five-door hatchback, not too expensive, within 10 miles of his constituency. And he found this one.” Harris said he had even joked that the colour of the car was right for Cameron and said he was lucky it was not red, but that was as political as the conversation went. “I wouldn’t have asked him about politics,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to start a political argument with a customer asking them about their political beliefs and they say: ‘Hold on, I’d rather not buy the car from you’.”
He was in two minds, he told the Guardian, in case his friends turned up instead and thought he was gullible.
Cameron told Harris he would return the next morning to buy the car, and returned to pay just after 10am. “I didn’t give him a discount, he paid the screen price, got the log book, went to the post office to pay the tax and off he went,” he said. “And then I thought, I’ve just sold a car to the prime minister.”
“I thought, well I’ll stay here just in case, because the security guard said they’d arrive at 17.32 and I thought, well, that’s a bit precise,” he said. “Next thing I know, Mr Cameron and his security guards turned up, and I thought, this is actually happening.”
Harris said he did not give Cameron any special treatment. “I think his security team thought it was odd I was justtreating him like a normal customer,” he said. “But it’s not like he was buying a £20,000 car, then it might have been different.”

#14 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II Rolls Royce - A View to a Kill
is driven by Sir Godfrey Tibbett, an MI6 agent posing as Bond’s chauffeur. After strangling Tibbett in a car wash, Henchwoman May Day captures Bond and knocks him unconscious. She then pushes the Rolls into a lake with Bond and Tibbett inside. Bond comes to and uses the air from the tires to breath underwater until May Day leaves the scene. A 1958 Bentley S1 doubled for the Rolls during the lake sequence.

A View to a Kill
Synopsis: This particular Rolls Royce has a long history within the Bond franchise; it was the personal car of James Bond producer Cubby Broccoli. Cubby had purchased it in August 1962, perhaps to celebrate the end of post-production for the first Bond film, Dr. No. The registration number was “CUB1”, and was often seen in Cubby’s personal parking space at Pinewood studios. In 1965, the Rolls had a brief cameo in Thunderball, shown in the car park of the fictional Shrublands health clinic. Twenty years later it became the main Bond car in A View to a Kill, albeit with a different licence number. The Rolls

Property, Financial and Legal Fixed-Rate Mortgages a Popular Option to Buy Property For decades property buyers in Spain have turned their nose up at the fixedrate mortgage, almost always choosing to go for the variable-rate option instead. But now, recent figures published by the National Consumer Institute (INE) have revealed that this tendency is changing – and fast. Data shows that in February this year, the number of people who have taken out a fixed-rate mortgage has reached 10.8% of the total. The average interest rate given to these mortgages sat at around 3.31%. However, what experts are seeing now is that the number of people preferring to take out a fixed-rate or mixed mortgage is rising rapidly, and is expected to register 20% of all mortgages in Spain within a few months. Despite the fact that interest rates are at the lowest they have ever been, many families are deciding to take the fixedrate option, basically for the peace of mind, knowing that the interest rate on their monthly repayments will remain the same for the duration of the contract. According to a survey carried out, these are the 10 best fixed-rate or mixed mortgages for 20 years on offer at the moment, with regards to the nominal interest rate solely: Hipoteca Naranja mixta from ING: 1,99% (10 years) and Euribor +0,99% for the rest
Hipoteca BBVA: 2,25% Hipoteca Ahora from Liberbank: 2,25% Hipoteca fija Bankinter: 2,40% Hipoteca fija from Banco Santander: 2,40% Hipoteca tipo fijo from Bankia: 2,40% Hipoteca fija Mari Carmen from Abanca: 2,49% Hipoteca Expansión from Banco Sabadell: 2,70% Hipoteca fija from Hipotecas.com: 2,80% Hipoteca fija from Activobank: 2,90%
interest if you cancel your mortgage within the first five years, and 0.25% for cancelling it after. Some mortgages become more expensive when you are asked to take out various insurances, credit cards and pension plans; so you need to be aware of this as well. With the Euribor as low as it is at the moment, it makes sense for many people to take out a variable-rate mortgage. And it looks like the Euribor is set to register low figures for at least a few years. It’s what will happen when interest rates start to go up that is probably worrying many people. Sometimes the security of knowing what you will have to pay for the full period is the best.
Although the nominal rate is the first thing to look at, there are other things to take into consideration as well when checking out which mortgage offer suits you best. -Traffic matters (vehicle transfers, Spanish plates etc.) -Legal assistance and litigation -Spanish wills and inheritance -NIE, Residencia, Nationality -Insurances -Property conveyancing -Translations -Fin De Obra Certificates
For example, ING does not charge an opening fee, but Bankinter and Activobank do (1%). You also need to check whether banks charge for fulfilling your mortgage early. Banco Santander charges 0.5%

Uncle Paul’s problem page Join Uncle Paul on Facebook! Dear Uncle Paul I was sitting outside a local eatery this morning and it came to me that there are so many ugly people around me. Do you think this is an expat thing or what? Adonis Dear Adonis Didn’t your parents ever tell you “don’t judge a book by its cover?” I’ve known beautiful people who are shallow, ignorant and sometimes downright nasty. I’ve also known and know homely, kind, generous, intelligent people who some would call pig ugly. Actually vomit inducing ugly. Not everything is about looks...except Hollywood perhaps or advertising to sell something. “Look you can be like us if you buy this product. “Yeah right. I’ve tried and it’s not worked yet! But then again you can’t alter Welsh perfection…. But I have to say I’ve noticed it too. I think this area has way too much ugly going around it. I think maybe because most people are waiting for God to take them very soon, they have just stopped trying and have let themselves go to the dogs. Fish and chip nights and belly buster breakfasts all washed down with cider!!! Revolting mutton dressed as Lamb so called ladies…. and local studs clomping around like elephant with their bellies. Yes you know them too!!! I have not seen any George Clooneys or Helen Mirrens around the quizzes or bingo, but I have seen tons of Arthur Mullards and Hilda Bakers drooling. Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I’m sick and tired of having to shave every day. Should I just get laser hair removal done? I don’t want a beard or moustache ever again so don’t tell me to grow one. Plumber Man Dear Plumber Man Your idea is worse than a vasectomy. Please grow a brain and a pair. Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul My lovely lady is a Christian; we are not married so she says she feels very guilty when we are intermate together because of her religious convictions. I am non-religious, healthy as an ox and very much at inner peace with
2016
myself. I just wish she could see how backwards she is in her beliefs. She is putting herself through so much mental anguish for nothing. I know religions have some valuable teachings, but unfortunately they are minimised by all the rubbish that is mixed in with it. Adam Dear Adam One of the busy body ladies at a local church advised me to tell you ..... REPENT YOU DIRTY SINNER!!! You are doing a great wrong by tempting this woman into your dirty sinning ways. Her religion is not the problem. The problem is you and your dark evil doings leading her to sin. She is feeling the power of the Holy Spirit and so should you. If you both continue in this sinful way, then you will have pain and misery in your lives forever. If you both repent and turn to Jesus the Messiah, then you will both find a true treasure beyond anything you could imagine. That is the truth. Speaking the truth is the loving thing to do. Me, I say go for it as you will more than likely be dead soon! Uncle Paul
Dear Uncle Paul My wife is complaining about me snore-talking ... so I recorded it last week. In the recording I can hear muffled talk from myself overpowered by this crazy deranged snore...but I definitely heard myself say ‘get to higher ground’. I decided to record for a few more nights...same result...same statement...’get to higher ground’. I’m concerned. Any advice would be appreciated Noah Dear Noah Run for the hills the rain is coming! We could see more swimming pools floating down the streets and old people bobbing about like rotting apples….. Sleep talking can involve complicated dialogues or monologues, complete gibberish or mumbling. The good news is that for most people it is a rare and short-lived occurrence. Anyone can experience sleep talking, but the condition is more common in males and children. Although not physically harmful, sleep talking can cause embarrassment and can annoy others. No treatment is necessary. However, if sleep talking is severe or persists over a long period of time, talk to your doctor about the problem. There may be an underlying medical explanation for your sleep talking (e.g. an undiagnosed sleep disorder, or debilitating anxiety or stress). For your wife, earplugs or white noise
(such as a fan) may help. I would also advise a hefty elbow in the side every time it happens. Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I think my marriage is going downhill and it is upsetting me greatly. In the past my wife and I enjoyed a happy and varied relationship. I am not stupid enough to think that things stay the same forever. The most important thing to me though is her total lack of affection towards me. She says that she has never changed and that she has always been the same but I promise you that is totally untrue. I have tried the romancing side (odd flowers and chocolates) the last time it was met with disdain and was told not to waste my money. The real problem is that I love her as much if not more than when we first met and she is still very beautiful and sexy in my eyes. Can you suggest anything? Oxoboy Dear Oxoboy Has your appearance or the way you present yourself changed? Have you turned into smelly blubber of lard with sweaty arm pits? Have you started to wear your pants and socks for four days on the trot? If so, then that may be the reason she is less affectionate. If not, ask her for some ideas on what you can do to rekindle her love and interest in you again. Be patient with her – but your persistence may lead her to tell you something that you do not wish to hear. Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I am a mid-50s male, and I have had a “thing” for female feet for as long as I can remember. I like them pretty and smelly. My wife complains that she is too ticklish to enjoy anything beyond a massage and never lets them smell. Do you think there is any way I can get past this with her as I want her to enjoy her feet more? Thanks for your time. JCB Dear JCB You like feet which are pretty but also smelly? I find it difficult to imagine someone who takes care of their feet well enough for them to look pretty, would allow them to be smelly. You can’t make anyone enjoy anything. You may be able to find a compromise that works for the both of you, Try sitting in the chemist in the summer time and watch all the oldies queuing for their heart pills in sandals. Pretty nasty and very smelly. Uncle Paul

We would like to thank all the nifty knitters who have been busy knitting articles for us to distribute to our clients. We currently have registered 9 baby girls and 10 baby boys (up to two years old) and 37 girls and 30 boys from three to 15 years old. Added to these children we also have 143 adults registered. If you are knitting for us, first of all, thank you very much and secondly, please bear in mind that the older children and the adults are in need of winter woollies too. We also extend our gratitude to Anne Edwards and the Puerto de Mazarrón Ladies Circle for their kind donation in memory of Mary Hornsly, who was the oldest member of the group until her death in January, aged 92. Thank you for thinking of us at this sad time ladies; we are very sorry for your loss. Could we once again ask our supporters and the readers of this article to LIKE us on our Facebook page? News of all aid days, shop opening times, events and photos can be seen there on https://www.facebook.com/mad.mazarron (type mad.mazarron in the search box at the top of the Facebook page). Could we once again appeal for toiletries such as toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel and sanitary towels please? Baby wipes and other baby products are always welcome to enable us to give these items to our families on our aid days. Things most of us take for granted, like a pack of sanitary towels, are a luxury to some! We are also desperate for nappies this month as we are now totally out. Donations of size 5 would be particularly useful. Last month Denise, our treasurer, left us to return to the UK so we wish her and her husband Dave all the very best for the future back amongst their loving family. We all have loving and happy memories of working alongside our Darling Denise and we thank her for all she has done for this charity. Her dedication has been an inspiration to many. We miss you already Den! Thank you to all our generous donators, supporters and especially to our caring and kind-hearted volunteers who give their time selflessly in order to improve the lives of others. If you would like more information about what we do, or would like to get involved, please get in touch via Facebook, email madmazarron@live.com or call 634 357 137. April has been a busy month for Kitty Kitty, it’s the time of year when animals have babies and can be a problem… In the last year, since we set up in May 2015, we have neutered 81 cats on Camposol and hopefully this spring has shown a difference in the amount of feral kittens being born here in this area. Projects like we are running cannot turn things around overnight but hopefully in a couple of years from now there will be very few unwanted kittens arriving on our doorsteps. We recently ran a day trip to Benidorm which was a huge success and managed to raise €540 towards the costs of future neutering so thank you to all who attended – for anyone interested we are planning on running another trip on Weds 14th September to take in a day there on market day and an opportunity to wander around and possibly enjoy the old town and the shops etc At the moment we have 3 kittens in our care….. Mabel and Maisie were found in the rubbish bins aged around 3 weeks old and have been bottle fed and raised in a foster home, they will travel to Germany to new homes when they are old enough – Pepe was found hugged up against a kerb after his mother and sibling were run over on the road, he was aged around 6 weeks old and when old enough will travel to a new home in Scotland, where he is going to be a Mascot for the Education Department in a school near Edinburgh and will have his own

twitter account – watch this space! We also recently visited with the 1st Camposol Murcia Rainbows and Brownies for an evening of education on kitten/ cat ownership and lots of kitten cuddles had by all – both kittens and children behaved extremely well We still desperately need donations of money to continue our work, paypal address for donations is camposolkittykitty@aol. com, donation tins are located in various bars and businesses locally – please visit our facebook page for all our local news on https://www.facebook.com/groups/CamposolKittyKitty/ or email us on camposolkittykitty@aol.com
We will be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with an ‘indoor street party’ at the Cultural Centre, Camposol on Wednesday 1st June at 1.30pm. There will be plenty of tasty food, entertainment provided by Graham York. Clients, friends & volunteers please let us know if you are planning to join us. The fashion show at the Welcome Group is an opportunity for us to model some of the clothing that is so generously donated to us. If you want to come along and see what’s on offer, and have a fun afternoon, tickets can be purchased from the Welcome Group, see events for details. Tickets for the Black & White Ball sold out in a week. Sorry if you have not been able to secure your tickets, the event is always very popular. This month sees the departure of Ann Lambert, our President since we started in 2010. It was Ann’s ambition for years to open a branch of Age Concern in the Mazarrón area. She recruited volunteers and set up a very successful organisation. We operate under the umbrella of Age Concern España and Ann played her part in overseeing the work of Age Concern throughout Spain & the islands. She has given an enormous amount of her time to Age Concern and the people living in our area. We will miss her when she goes. Our Volunteer CoOrdinator, Mags Downes, is taking on the role of President and we look forward to working with her. We are always looking for more volunteers, not only to help with our clients but also in admin roles. One (very part-time) job is preparing this monthly article for the local magazines. For those of you that follow the numerous stories and ups and downs of AAR it is with a broken heart that I have to inform you that are plucky, playful, loyal, loving Narlia has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. Narlia was rescued last September, fought for her life every step of the way even though she was fighting a chronic kidney condition. The sad thing was, it wasn’t the kidney condition but something totally unrelated that bought her short life to an end. RIP Narlia you were and always will be a very special girl. With every down there are numerous ups and here we have Momma Lucie who was rescued from the Parrera whilst pregnant with 9 puppies. Lucie has made the journey to her new home in Germany and oh my goodness she is soooooo happy. Take a look at the Video on our FB page and you will see what I mean. All her puppies have got homes. How rewarding was this story, but, how it different it could have been had Lucie not come into AAR care. Charlie boy too has a home. How posh is this…….a holiday home in Spain and then onto Jersey! Charlie is the Minpin who has been with us since last October. He came into our care without us even knowing the type of dog he was. Poor boy was in such a bad way. However, under the wonderful foster care of Gill he has grown into lovely little boy with bags of life and fingers crossed will settle in well with his new owner. Lucky boy…….. so deserved. Oh goodness me I think I have in my care the teeniest, weeniest puppies ever!! Their momma was found with 4 puppies only days old by a Campsite. Now they are 6 weeks old, have had their first injection, worming and weigh in. They are doing well and one has already been reserved. The smallest one at the moment is a mere 720gramms but she is a little darling. They are going to be small and would make a perfect companion, loving a nice warm knee to snuggle up on!! Time to give our donkeys and ponies a shout out………..I have many who need homes. All these little ponies and donkeys would also make perfect companions. Maya is a typical example, rescued last October and around 5 years old and only 1m hight! She is a very cheeky girl but has come such a long way in the past 6 months. She deserves a forever home, go on give me a ring and we can chat everything through. I will be there every step of the way to help. Come and take a look in our shops, we how have an abundance of summer clothing at great prices. As usual I will be on Camposol B Car Park on Mondays between 11.30-1.30pm where you can drop off any donations or visit one of our shops either in Roldan or in Mazarron Town opposite the Medical Centre, where donations can also be dropped off 10.30-2pm. FAST2016 IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE FULLY OPERATIONAL FROM MONDAY 13TH JUNE 2016 The service will be available 24 hours per day every day of the year and will be provided FREE to all persons on Camposol. The EMERGENCY NUMBER remains the same 968 970 626. At the time of writing, training courses for New Responders have been authorised to take place at the end of May. This authorised training is for the use of Defibrillator and other life preserving procedures. FAST2016 have a really good training team who provide practical training each week refreshing the life preserving skills that may be required when called to an incident. The practical side of the training involves Responders taking the emergency calls and gathering information from the caller. Subsequently locating the address of the casualty which, at times, can prove to be quite a challenge, with some road signs missing and some houses with house numbers and some with plot numbers. Some holiday makers, who have rented, do not even know the exact address! Training scenarios have been staged during the month of May to offer new Responders the opportunity to take an emergency call and attend an address with another Responder and deal with a ‘staged’ incident. FAST2016 will respond to any life threatening situation on Camposol and give assistance, where required, until the emergency services arrive. The Responders, during the time in which they are present at the incident, will advise on what documents may be required by the ambulance crew when they arrive, if an ambulance is called. Also the FAST2016 Responders can provide a list of essential items which may be helpful at the hospital e.g. mobile phone, money, medication, day clothes to return home in, and spectacles. Having a FAST2016 team present in your house when there is a medical emergency can be very comforting and reassuring for the family members. During the last few months there has been a recruitment drive attempting to get the number of Responders up to 40. Two Responders will always attend each incident. FAST2016 are in need of more Responders and Support Workers. No previous knowledge is required as full training will be given. Many Responders already have past knowledge as we currently have ex nurses, care workers, first aiders, ex service personnel, firemen and police officers. If you have any spare time and want to help this great community of Camposol by becoming either a Responder or Support Worker, then please email us at recruitment@fast2016.org or alternatively come along for a coffee and a chat at the Cultural Centre on a Tuesday morning. Further information is provided on our website www.fast2016. org Other benefits of being a member of FAST2016 are being part of a great group of like minded people who are always willing to help each other. It is a great way to meet new people and also give something back to the community. HELP US TO HELP YOU! Gordon Clive
