Newspaper, El Pais, said the regional government, the Junta de Andalucia, had identified more than 3,000 houses along the banks of the river which had been built on land at risk from flooding. The Ministry of Housing has also begun investigations into another 8,400 houses in more than 400 municipalities along the river’s course, although these are built outside of the flood-risk areas. Junta de Andalucia president, Jose Antonio Griñan, warned of the dangers of building homes illegally in areas where floods were common. He said: “The river has its own set of deeds and can arrive in any moment to claim what belongs to it”.

The same plea has been echoed on the other sectors. On Sector D, Bob Owen has put a plea out for more assistance and he can be contacted on 968 970 577 On D they have raised a lot of cash, over 500 Euros one week, and this is being put to good use as everyone can see, but now the weather has turned, it would be great if folk would turn out to help.

Ecologist group, Ecologistas en Accion, which claims there are more than 25,000 illegal houses built in flood-risk areas across the whole of Spain, blamed local governments for the situation. A spokesperson said: “There has been negligence on the part of councils for allowing construction to take place in floodable areas.” The flooding comes after the wettest February in half a century.
