THE Hello everyone!

Welcome to the the March 2015 edition of The Journal! Its been a busy, busy month for us here, and for local businesses everywhere in fact. There has been a lot going on. For those of you that that are not already aware, Another World properties have now moved into a new office on Camposol Sector B, next door to the Vets. Ibex Insurance is settling in to their new office at Camposol Business centre on A Sector, and soon we will have a new restaurant opening up on B sector commercial centre, more on that next month. The New Royal in El Alamillo in Puerto de Mazarró n is now under new ownership and hs been renamed “Bar Med” It is undergoing extensive refurbishment. With a great location, fantastic views, a great food menu and the best entertainment around, we are sure that “Bar Med” will be a huge success and we would like to wish all of the team there the best of luck. We are sure that Bar Med will be the place to be this summer! I would like to apologise to any of the charities or people whose contributions we have not been able to include this month. Sometimes we are sent pictures or text in the wrong format, and we simply don’t have the time to alter them. If you need clarification on how we need to receive your files, then please email me. On March the 11th at 4pm in Marianos restaurant on Camposol, the Campsol and District Independent Party will be hosting their AGM. The turnout is expected to be very large, so please get there early. As you may have guessed from the front cover this month the Formula One season starts in earnest. With many rules changes and drivers switching to new teams the 2015 season has the potential to be one of the most exciting ever and we have printed the season fixtures along with a Formula 1 quiz and word search for all the racing fans amongst you. We would like to say a huge thank once again to all the people who make The Journal possible, our readers, our advertisers and Danny from Insignia Graphics who has aged 15 years in the 4 years he has been with us! ‘Wives provoke violence’, say third of Spanish men A new study has lifted the lid on young Spaniards’ attitudes, revealing they are generally single home birds, who - at least among the men - retain some old-fashioned views about male-female relationships. The study revealed that 30 percent of young Spanish men think that when a woman is assaulted by her husband “she must have done something to provoke it”. Young Spaniards may be ahead of the curve when it comes to attitudes regarding gay marriage, the research revealed. But in others, particularly male-female relationships, they show a particularly sexist attitude. The study, carried out by the Centro Reina Sofia for Adolescence and Youth, analyzed the behaviour and attitudes of young Spaniards, between the ages of 15 and 29. It also revealed that 34 percent of young Spanish men and 28 percent of young Spanish women believe that “a man who seems aggressive is more attractive”. Sexist attitudes remain among many young Spanish men: around 33 percent of them believe that “it’s acceptable for men to go out with lots of women but not the opposite”, while only 9 percent of women agree with the statement. The study also revealed some interesting results when it comes to cohabitation, or lack of. Of young Spaniards under the age of 29, only 22 percent of men and 29 percent of women are married or live with a partner. Over 69 percent of men and 67 percent of women are single. When it comes to salaries, inequality between men and women is still an issue in Spain. According to the study, women who are just as qualified as men earn, on average, €100 less a month, while 42 percent of men and 47 percent of women agree that having children can ‘put the brakes on a woman’s career’. Yet only 23 percent of men and 11 per cent of women think having children can be detrimental to a man´s career

Coca Cola boycott for Spanish parliament?

A Spanish politician has requested that the nation’s parliament stop all sales of Coca Cola until the company reinstates workers in a bottling plant in the capital. Cayo Lara, head of the United Left party, has sent a letter to the president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies requesting that all sales of Coca Cola be stopped until the multinational complies with a Spanish court ruling, that the company should reinstate workers at the Fuenlabrada bottling plant in Madrid. The parliament should not maintain “commercial relationships with companies or brands that do not comply with court rulings and violate the fundamental rights of workers and their representatives,” Lara said. Over a year ago, Coca Cola announced the closure of the Madrid bottling plant, which would affect almost 2,000 workers, who were made redundant, reshuffled or accepted retirement. Redundancies at the Madrid bottling plant saw protests in the capital, while unions took Coca Cola to court, with the eventual ruling that the multinational had to give everyone their jobs back. Spanish courts ruled that the redundancies were illegal, as in Spain, other than for disciplinary reasons, companies are only allowed to fire staff if the company is facing financial difficulty or the job roles disappear. While it is currently unclear as to whether the parliament will ban the sale of Coca Cola, it is a clear sign that the furore over the bottling plant closure is far from quietening down.

Cock fighting escapes animal cruelty ban

The ruling Popular Party (PP) decided not to include two amendments that would have banned cock fighting, which has been taking place in the Canary Islands for more than 500 years. The amendments, tabled last week by the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) to be included in the penal code reform bill, would have seen cock fighting outlawed, with prison sentences from six months to two years for those caught promoting the blood sport. “The PP’s refusal to ban cock fighting falls within the many exceptions that are made to animal abuse and we are ashamed that Spain is going to maintain these old fashioned practices,” a spokesman for the ERC said. “Cruelty should not be protected by law,” he added. “We are saddened by the position of the Spanish government but we would be lying to say it surprised us.” In Spain, Andalusia and the Canary Islands are the only autonomous communities in which cock fighting is legal. In the Canaries, the 1991 law for the protection of animals permits cock fighting “in those localities where they have been celebrated” although it banned bullfighting. The cockfighting tradition dates back over 500 years, when the islands were first conquered. Fighting cocks are prepared for the ring at around 18 months old. Injuries are par of the course during cock fights; it is not unusual for the animals to lose one or both eyes, and around one in every ten cocks dies in the fight.

date in sight, could it be the latest in a long line of Spain’s white elephant building projects? After spending €58 million on a state of the art, multi-use facility, the local government in Navarre does not know what to do with it. From the outside, the Reyno de Navarra Arena is impressive and imposing; a giant white cube covered in 933 smaller illuminating cubes. But the nearby streets are silent and wire fences surround the unused public building. The project is the latest victim of the crisis, just one in a long line of white elephants that have plagued Spain since 2008. The building was approved back in 2008 as a response to the economic crisis, part of a €4.5 billion plan by the community of Pamplona. The scheme was modelled on Plan

But the sports and cultural centre has yet to open, with no sign that it will in the near future, the latest victim of Spain’s building boom. As it lies empty, it is hemorrhaging cash: security and maintenance alone cost around €250,000 a year, while expected demand has plummeted. “The demands and habits of the general public have changed due to the crisis,” Ángel Vázquez, consultant on the project said. According to Socialist party politician, Roberto Jiménez, “If we could go back to 2008, nobody would have taken this decision (to go ahead with the build),

we thought that the crisis would be over quickly.â€? The local government has now dismissed purely public running of the centre and is exploring public-private partnerships. For sports events the arena could hold up to 10,000 spectators, while the capacity for concerts increases to 12,000.Â

Spain’s first bondage-themed hotel equipped with a massive dungeon and all the latest gear – has been stopped from opening its doors by the local village authorities. Top 10: must-know Spanish superstitions Did you know that Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky in Spain, and not Friday the 13th as in Anglo-Saxon countries? That’s because Tuesday is said to be dominated by Ares, the Greek god of war, who gives his name to Martes, or Tuesday, in Spanish. There is an even old proverb that explains the superstition: “On Tuesday, don’t get married, embark on a journey, or move away (‘En martes, ni te cases, ni te embarques, ni de tu casa te apartes’) But there are plenty of other Spanish superstitions you need to know about to make sure your life in Spain is as lucky as possible! Hats On Heads, Not On Beds: In Spain, putting a hat on a bed will bring bad luck. This could stem from the time when people believed that evil spirits lived in your hair, so, they could easily be transferred from hair to hat to bed, resulting in evil spirits getting you in the night. Might be best to keep that hat on the hat stand, just in case.

The Pointy End: Don’t buy family or friends knives or scissors as a gift. Tradition says that this means that the relationship will be broken. So think again about that set of knives you bought as a wedding present!

This comes from the idea that yellow represents sulphur and the Devil, The colour yellow is also said to bring bad luck in certain situations, so don’t wear yellow on the day of an exam, a job interview or when you are starring in a play.

Break A Leg: What is it with wishing harm on people as a sign of good luck? The theatre has always been rife with superstitions and while in many countries “break a leg” is the standard way to wish good luck, in Spain you’ve got to wish that person “mucha mierda” or “loads of sh@t”.

Lucky New Year: Spaniards traditionally eat 12 grapes on the 12 strokes of midnight on New Year’s Eve. For even more luck and prosperity for the year ahead, wearing red underwear on the last night of the year will also help.

Cactus Mystery: Ever wondered why there are so many cactuses on window sills in Spain? That’s because it is widely believed in Spain that a cactus can ward away evil. Seven Lives: While most countries have a superstition about cats having multiple lives because of their suppleness and savvy at getting out of difficult situations, poor Iberian kitty’s have two fewer lives than their English counterparts, or just seven. Swept Off Your Feet: If you accidentally brush the feet of a single woman while sweeping, it means she’ll never get married. The superstition is related to witches.

Best Foot Forward: Misfortune, it is said, enters a room with its left foot. If you do happen to enter a room with your left foot, then don’t worry. Just make sure to make the sign of the cross three times to counter the bad luck! Purse problems: Always make sure there is an extra chair at your table in Spain: for your handbag. Spaniards believe that leaving your handbag on the floor will result in you losing all your money.

The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK

The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE

The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. After six tough years, Spain’s ailing building sector is finally coming back to life, with public sector projects fuelling a lot of the new growth. When Spain’s property bubble burst in 2008, the country was plunged into an economic crisis that threw millions of people out of work. Now after six hard years, and even though hundreds of thousands of properties stand empty, building has restarted in the country. The decade before the crash saw an all-out building frenzy in the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy. Around 700,000 houses were built each year during the 2000s until the bubble burst, more than in Britain, France and Germany combined. At the same time municipal and local governments, flush with cash in part from the sale of building licences, undertook massive infrastructure projects, such as Huesca airport in the foothills of the Pyrenees in northeastern Spain, which opened in 2007 and is now mostly empty. Nearly 1.9 million people worked in the building sector before the economic crisis. Now the sector employs fewer than

The sector created nearly 10,000 jobs in November, according to employment ministry figures published last week. “It is mostly linked to a rise in public works,” said a spokesman for the National Confederation of Construction, which groups together the majority of Spain’s builders. The tendency should continue next year since Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s budget for 2015 — when he faces local and legislative elections — calls for spending on infrastructure projects to increase by around six percent. “There is a lot of optimism in the construction sector, in part because of the announcements that have already been made by the public works minister,” said Javier Vaca, director of business development at Spanish builder FCC. The slight uptick in the sector is not limited to public works, with the building of private homes up slightly as well. “The improvement in investment in the construction sector that has been noticed since the start of the year seems to have continued during recent months,” the Bank of Spain wrote in its latest bulletin at the end of November. Among the factors giving the sector a boost are low interest rates,

easier household credit, a rise in the number of building permits issued and a return to modest economic growth, said Miguel Cardoso, chief economist at Spain’s second-largest bank BBVA. “There are a series of factors that make us think that we have reached an inflection point,” he said. The number of building permits issued in Spain during the first nine months of 2014 rose by 5.7 percent over the same period last year, according to BBVA. Home building is up despite a huge stock of unsold homes because many of these empty dwellings are not in urban areas like Madrid and Barcelona where the economy is improving at a faster clip and demand is rising, Cardoso said. Most of the empty new houses are found along Spain’s extensive coastline or in the interior of the country that were intended as holiday homes or secondary residences, he added. “We didn’t plunge into a cave, we fell down to the catacombs,” said Josep Ramon Fontana, a Spanish member of European construction business research group Euroconstruct. The

construction sector, which accounted for about 20 percent of Spain’s economic output in 2007, now represents just 5.0 percent of it, according to Itec. Foreign investors have started to return to the sector. Mexican telecoms magnate Carlos Slim, the world’s second-richest man, announced last month that he will invest €650 million to become the main shareholder in Spanish builder FCC. “This time the sector is not the cause of economic growth, it is growing because of economic growth,” Cardoso said.

The 2015 Formula One Season

The Formula 1 season starts in earnest in Australia this month and the Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, have published a number of rule changes and a revised 21 round calendar that that makes the 2015 championship look like it will be one of the best ever. The calendar now features a provisional slot for Korea, which hosted four Grand

Prix between 2010 and 2013. The Asian country is slated to host the fifth round of next year’s championship on the first weekend of May. China meanwhile is now set to host the third round of the championship, immediately before the F1 fraternity travels to Bahrain. Alongside the calendar changes, the FIA confirmed a number of changes to the 2015 sporting regulations. The double points regulation brought in for 2014 will be dropped, as will the proposal for standing starts after safety car periods. Meanwhile the virtual safety car system trialed in the wake of Jules Bianchi’s crash in Japan will be formally introduced in 2015. The FIA also announced the findings of its ten-man accident panel surrounding Bianchi’s crash. The FIA has also tweaked enginerelated penalties. A full power unit change will no longer result in an automatic penalty; instead penalties will be applied cumulatively based on the individual components of each power unit. Grid penalties will no longer roll over into subsequent races: should a driver be unable to take the full penalty,

the remainder will now be applied in the form of time penalties during the relevant race. A new ten-second penalty meanwhile has been created in addition to the existing five-second rule. The procedure for lapped cars under safety cars has also been modified: while lapped cars will be allowed to pass the safety car and unlap themselves, the safety car will no longer have to wait until they have rejoined the back of the grid. The criteria for the issuing of super licenses was also tweaked, with a new minimum age of 18 approved for 2016. Drivers must also have run for a minimum of two years in minor formulas. Finally, several changes were made to the 2015 technical regulations, including a rise in minimum weight to 702kg, new limitations on wind tunnel testing, tweaks to the rules concerning suspension layouts and improved survival cell protection.

With their commitment both Colin and Mikey wish to establish awareness of the charity and raise needed funds in order to help support the charity. Unlike the UK, Spain does not have anything like the RSPCA or PDSA. Animal welfare is down to individual groups. Spain’s traffic authorities have published their ‘speed camera tolerance threshold’ list and warn that restrictions are now in force.

139 kilometres per hour will face penalties. Every month, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will carry out special crackdown campaigns in 1,200 places on Spain’s roads, and will publish on its website - www.dgt.es - where these will be in advance. Cameras will always be visible to drivers, even mobile ones on roadside tripods, a short time in advance but long enough for drivers to be able to slow down. “Fining drivers is not the end aim at all - the presence of speed cameras is to discourage and prevent speeding and to ensure drivers respect speed limits in general, especially in accident blackspots,” the DGT claims on its website. Unmarked cars will be employed to catch known speeders who regularly break the limits by excessive amounts. Another 30 cameras are set to go up, mainly on back roads rather than motorways. Eight in 10 road deaths happen on secondary roads, or a total of 892 in 2014. The margin for error in speeds, known as ‘Tolerance 7’, has been established firstly to ensure all cameras across the country are consistent and a driver would not be fined in one region where he or she would be considered within legal limits in another, and also to ensure motorists who do not have digital speedo-meters can judge better whether or not they are travelling too fast.

Limits of up to 100 kilometres per hour with speed cameras set up, either fixed ones or temporary speed traps, will be programmed to catch drivers travelling at seven kilometres per hour or more above the limit. These measures will not apply in the regions of Catalunya and the Basque Country, which have their own separate traffic authorities. This means in a 60-kilometre limit, drivers will not be fined until they are caught travelling at 68 kilometres per hour. From 100 kilometres per hour upwards, speed traps will be set to record driver If the 7% threshold were to be applied details once they exceed the speed limit across the board, says the DGT, this by 7% or more. On motorways, where the speed limit is 120 kilometres per hour unless stated, anyone driving at SITUATED ONLY 4 131 kilometres per MINUTES FROM hour or more will CONDADO DE ALHAMA AND 6 MINUTES FROM be fined. would mean drivers travelling at 33 kilometres per hour in a 30-kilometre limit would automatically be fined - and the threekilometre difference would barely show on a non-digital speed-o-meter, resulting in an unfair situation to the motorist. But if, on the same stretch of road, the driver is travelling at 38 kilometres per hour, it is easier to see that the needle is has risen too high. Speed traps will be able to detect the type of vehicle before they flash into action - until now, lorries, vans and buses breaking the limit for vehicles of this nature but within those permitted for cars and motorbikes would get away with it as the cameras could not ‘read’ the vehicle type, only the speed it was travelling at. Lorries, cars towing trailers, caravans

or horseboxes exceeding 750 kilos in weight, and articulated vehicles are limited to 90 kilometres per hour on motorways, 80 kilometres on national highways and 70 on roads in other nonbuilt up areas.

Book Review Outlaws: Spain Book Review By Caroline Angus Baker On a summer day at the arcade, timid sixteen-yearold Ignacio Cañas encounters two charismatic rebels: El Zarco (“Blue Eyes”) and his gorgeous girl, Tere. Entranced, he crosses the border into their dangerous world, becoming their partner in crimes that quickly escalate. Twenty-five years later, Tere materializes in Cañas’s office, needing help. Cañas has settled back into middle-class life, becoming a successful defense lawyer. Zarco has matured into a convict of some infamy. Yet somehow, with new stakes, this

page 22

three-way affair will begin again. With his usual brio, Javier Cercas surveys the borders between right and wrong, respectability and criminality, and to what extent we can pass between them—or determine on which side we ultimately fall. This brilliantly plotted tale firmly establishes him as one of the most rewarding novelists writing today. Cercas’ 2014 novel, Outlaws, (or Las Leyes de la Frontera – Laws of the Border) is a book where historical detail and fiction mix (and you know how much I enjoy that). The book tells the story of a boy, Ignacio Cañas, starting in the 1970’s, who comes of age in a dangerous way. The point of view is told through Ignacio, retelling the story in later life. Ignacio meets El Zarco, a young criminal and his girlfriend, Tere. Ignacio is quickly on-his-knees in love with Tere, who toys with him to irritating (for Ignacio) levels. Franco is already dead but the repressive laws of the time haven’t yet been

www.thejournalspain.es

lifted. Ignacio is living an average middle-class life in Gerona, and works after school at an arcade, where the initial meetings take place. Zarco, a self-important thug, and his misfit girlfriend recruit Ignacio into their gang. It takes little more than a blowjob and the promise of mischief to draw Ignacio from his simple life with his family. Petty crime turns to more violent acts as Ignacio’s life with drugs, prostitutes and breaking the law spirals into a shambles. But when a bank robbery goes wrong, the gang is disbanded. The characters of the innocent Ignacio, and the wannabe hero/criminal Zarco are well told and believable, and Tere’s desperation is easy to imagine. The book jumps forward 25 years and Ignacio is a successful lawyer. He had put his past behind him, much like Spain has done in the same time period. Thanks to Ignacio’s father and his Falangist friend, Ignacio came away unscathed from a bank robbery, never charged, while Zarco and Tere shared a harder fate. Over two decades, Zarco has been the inspiration of four movies and has released his memoirs, and Ignacio fears Zarco believes him to have been an informant, such was his preferential treatment by the police in the 1970’s. Ignacio decides to become

Te l p h o n e : 968 595 864 Introducing “BAR MED”…..The New Royal Just Got Miles Better!! Several months ago we reported that Mazarrón Entertainments, the parent company for Camposol Golf and Alley Palais had a new addition to the family in the acquisition of the New Royal in Puerto de Mazarrón. Well the exciting news is that The New Royal just got Miles Better!! In a “match made in heaven” Mazarrón Entertainments have joined forces with Michelle and Derek Miles of Miles Better Group to bring you the only British Owned Entertainment Bar Restaurant in The Port area “BAR MED”. There can´t be many who don´t know of Michelle and Derek Miles. Derek has been in Spain for over 10 years and is best known as the cheeky chappy window cleaner or the owner of Miles Better Water Filter Systems. His wife Michelle has been in Spain for only 2 ½ years but has certainly made an impact on the local entertainment scene. Within six months of arriving in Spain she almost single handedly organised the Camposol Fiesta; brought back the glory days of Camposol Commercial Centre as the organiser of the “Camposol Triangle” and brought a touch of class to the area with the Las Tres Estrellas Classical

With our new business partners, we have great plans for the future. “The Clubhouse at Camposol Golf and Alley Palais have great reputations for excellent food and customer service so we jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with Colin, Stuart and their family as joint owners of BAR MED. With my background in marketing and entertainment, we all feel that this really is a match made in heaven” BAR MED is situated on The El Alamillo Plaza with fabulous views across the sea and already there have been several noticeable changes. The somewhat “tired” interior of the bar has been decorated and made much lighter, brighter and more modern. Over the next couple of months the bar will be refurbished to such an extent that it will be unrecognisable as the Chinese Restaurant it started out. Michelle added “Suitlana the chef is staying with us along with Vicky Gibbs who is our Assistant Manager and popular Waiter/Bar man Jordan Davies. We work really well together as a team and are looking at new winter and summer menus and new ideas for events and activities. We already have plans in place for a “Party on The Plaza” every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer. It will be a collaboration with

We will bring a mix of Spanish and British acts to reflect our local population and the three venues on the plaza. As you might expect, the owners have already made changes to the entertainment and have moved the usual Saturday evening entertainment to the afternoons for the winter. Music is from 2pm to 4pm and the kitchen is open from 10am serving English Breakfasts and Menu del Dia and usual A La Carte from 12. Plans are underway for a St Patrick´s Day Celebration on the afternoon of Tuesday 17th March and The Grand Opening of BAR MED on Saturday 4th April when there will be a Special Guest Hostess Entertainer from Benidorm, a Mini Disco and Children´s activities during the day and a Family Hypnotist Show in the evening with the Incredible Dave Rawson. There will also be some Disney “Frozen” Characters to share the fun. So keep watching this space and come on down to the Brand New BAR MED!!! It really is Miles Better!!

Meet Bond, the Robot That Creates Handwritten Notes for You

Bond combines the best parts of MakerBot 3-D printers and Montblanc pens to create custom communiqués. With all the email, texts, tweets, and status updates of modern life, people have never been more prolific writers. Yet penmanship is at a nadir because we do so much of this writing on a device, often with our thumbs. Oddly, it could be a device—a robot, more specifically— called Bond that saves the humble art of handwriting. Bond combines the best bits of MakerBot 3-D printers and Montblanc pens. Using the Bond app, you can compose a thank you note,

page 26

holiday card, or any other type of correspondence, choose slick stationary, and specify a recipient. A robot writes out your message with a real pen in your choice of handwriting (or a facsimile of your own if you’re willing to pay for it), tucks into into an envelope sealed with wax, and sends it off to the post office. Bond was conceived in 2013 and its twist on e-commerce was each carefully curated bauble had to be accompanied by a handwritten note. The business generated 200,000€ in its first 90 days of operation, but the most positive feedback was focused on the custom communiqués. Frustrated the by the challenges of managing gift inventory and invigorated by the interest in the handwritten cards, Bond founder Sonny Caberwal changed course.

www.thejournalspain.es

“We made a strategic decision to focus on building handwritten note technology, because it was most core to our goal of helping people articulate the appreciation of their relationship.” Originally, Bond used midcentury autopen technology to craft the letters, but such systems weren’t flexible enough to meet Bond’s needs at scale. In order to mass produce personalized notes, Caberwal assembled a team of roboticists, software engineers, and typographers. “We pair our engineering efforts with our own team of handwriting experts, all of whom have advanced degrees in type design,” says Caberwal. “The design-focused handwriting team overlaps with hardware and software engineering and operations in a very unique way, to inform software design, hardware design, hardware maintenance, and operational execution.” Unlike fonts that are rendered instantaneously with pixels or printer toner, Caberwal insists that the Bond robots write letters the way a human would, rather than relying on algorithmic shortcuts. For instance, it’s theoretically possible to draw a lower-case “t” with just two strokes, but often humans are less efficient, creating and up and down stroke with a cross. It’s little details like this that Bond captures to make notes you’ve paid a robot to write seem more human. “The order in which strokes are made actually effects the physical output, and is a visible example of how we consider letter design in all aspects of not just software, but hardware,” says Caberwal. This dedication to human handwriting practices requires the team to fine-tune the robots to balance their flawless execution with the quirks of letters written by real, live people. “We’re always thinking about speed optimization versus the natural rate of ink flow from a traditional pen, and how we can re-engineer that rate of flow while increasing the speed of the movement of the pen,” says Caberwal. Caberwal’s passion for craft were honed while playing in a band in college and working as a fashion model for Kenneth Cole after law school. “It’s shown me that people gravitate toward things that make them feel,” he says. “It’s why we love certain musicians, actors, chefs, and designers—because they inspire

2015

emotion in us, and make us feel something.” “That’s core to our mission as an organization: we believe that we can be happier by simply making those around us happy,” he says. “We hope Bond makes it easier to do that.”

Volvo Will Test SelfDriving Cars With Real Customers in 2017

When it comes to self-driving cars, 2020 is going to be a big year. That’s the deadline Nissan and Mercedes-Benz have given themselves for putting cars with autonomous features on the market, and it’s roughly when we expect so see robo-cars from Audi and maybe even Google on sale. For Volvo, 2020 represents something different. The company has repeatedly said that is the year by which it wants to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities in its cars. The surest way to stop crashes? Eliminate human drivers. And that means autonomous vehicles. To reach that goal, Volvo must move fast. The Swedes are no strangers to the technology, having successfully tested “road trains” of robo-cars. But if Volvo wants to adopt this technology on a broad scale, it has to ramp things up and do a lot more testing. Testing that goes beyond driving a dozen cars around town with trained employees riding shotgun. Testing that shows how this technology will be used by consumers, how it will interact with regular cars, and what its limits are. That’s why in 2017, Volvo plans to launch the most

2015

ambitious autonomous tech trial announced thus far: It’s going to put 100 customers in cars with autonomous capabilities and turn them loose on public roads under a program it calls “Drive Me.” “It is relatively easy to build and demonstrate a self-driving concept vehicle, but if you want to create an impact in the real world, you have to design and produce a complete system that will be safe, robust and affordable for ordinary

customers,” says Erik Coelingh, a technical specialist at Volvo. The “production viable system” will do things like maintain a safe distance from other cars and change lanes when necessary. Volvo The cars will be Volvo’s new XC90 SUV, which goes on sale this year and is already “semi-autonomous.” Its auto brake function prevents you from making risky maneuvers that endanger others. It can automatically and safely follow a car in stop-and-go traffic. It can parallel park largely on its own, with the driver only tending to the gas and brake. Volvo hasn’t said much about what capabilities its Drive Me vehicles will have, but says the “production-viable system” will be capable of handling an array of scenarios, “from smooth commuting to heavy traffic and emergency situations.” It’ll do things like maintain a safe distance from other cars, merge into traffic, and change lanes when

necessary. Autonomous mode will be limited to 30 miles of preapproved roads in Gothenburg, Sweden (where Volvo’s based), mostly urban highways, with no pedestrians, cyclists, or oncoming traffic. Drivers will be representative of Volvo’s customer base, and will include, to the degree possible, people skeptical of autonomous tech. They’ll have to be sober, awake and alert whenever they’re in the car, and ready to take over if the car encounters tricky conditions like rough weather or debris in the road. But the idea is to have the car do most of the work, particularly in the event of an emergency, because these circumstances (like an imminent crash) are where computers are expected to out-perform humans. The goal of Drive Me is to see how the technology stands up to real world conditions, how it moves around human-driven cars, and what conditions it can handle. That’ll give Volvo more data for fine-tuning the system, and regulators a better understanding of how autonomy can be allowed on public roads. Those regulators and city officials are on-board, but Volvo’s got more testing work to do before it can let the untrained masses behind the wheel. “We will not launch the car until we have proven that it’s sufficiently safe,” says Coelingh. “Right now we have a complete design, we strongly believe in that. But we have to have data that proves that it’s sufficiently safe.” So 2017’s not guaranteed, but the automaker is confident it’s an achievable goal. If all goes well, Volvo plans to expand the trial beyond Gothenburg. The UK—which is about to implement a super hands-off approach to selfdriving car testing—is high on the list for automakers. Wherever Volvo goes, it’ll be further on its way to the no deaths by 2020 goal.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price They say laughter is the best medicine, and indeed it usually is. ‘They’ being the Reader’s Digest as I remember from those endless little magazines my parents used to read, which I would plough through as a girl, skipping past ‘how to make rugs out of peanut plants’ and the like, just waiting to find the nugget of humour usually placed at the end of these articles, and the pot of gold itself, a whole page devoted to rip roaring belly laughs. We’ll all be chortling at the moment, no doubt, or crying into our beers as the six nations rugby heads towards it’s conclusion, and no doubt the England jokes will still be flying high alongside the sheep jibes, not forgetting the kilts and and leprechauns, cockerels and whatever the Italians decide to wave this year. ‘Watching rugby is like watching Doctor Who. I really enjoy it, but haven’t got a clue what’s going on.’ One recent cold Saturday night, I ended up near the Millennium Stadium in

Cardiff, (scene of that opening night of great Welsh comedy which left the English side in stitches, and half the nation clutching their sides with mirth or despair depending on the colour of your shirt,) at Cardiff Glee Club on Mermaid Quay. Twenty eight of us had tickets for a night of laughter, booze and food, with a selection of comedians on stage, whilst sat in rows with desks like errant school kids, just wide enough to hold a drink and a plate of food. There was the usual run of filthy language (one friend behind me didn’t laugh all night) with political and religious banter (a Muslim sat stoically in front as the Allah jokes came thick and fast courtesy of a red headed Irishman with scant resemblance to his countryman Dave Allen.) It’s ten years this month that the master of the non pious passed away, and although he mortified many people with his religious jokes, his memory lingers on, along with his cigarette, side table, drink glass and missing finger.

The Welshman replied ‘You don’t say!’ and continued drinking his pint. The second Englishman tried his luck ‘Saint David wore a dress!’ The Welshman responded ‘You’re very sharp!’ and took another sip. The first Englishman bounced up to the table and yelled ‘Saint David was an Englishman!’ The Welshman replied calmly, ‘That’s what your mates have been trying to tell me!’’ Amen, and may your god go with you.

‘I’m an atheist, thank god!’ he once announced. If you’re reading this on the first of March, it’s Saint David’s day. So, in the spirit of friendly rivalry, here’s one gleaned from the internet. Three Englishmen walk into a bar and spot a Welshman sitting alone at a table. One said to the others, ‘Let’s pick a fight with Taffy.’ The second one said ‘We don’t want to be arrested, let’s rile him up so he starts it!’ The third one heads over and says ‘St David was a sissy!’

Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group

Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group hard at work on Sunday 8th February spreading 25 tonnes of stone in the Memorial park. Following our AGM held on 3rd February, we are delighted to announce our 2015 projects. Working in conjunction with the businesses based in the commercial centre, we intend to improve the communal area directly in-front of the building. Using wooden planters and trellis, we intend to segregate the parking and seating areas. Our plans will make for a much safer environment, but more significantly will greatly enhance the look of the area, making it a much nicer place to meet and socialise in. Subject to raising the necessary funding we hope to complete the project before the end of May. We also intend to continue enhancing several areas of the memorial

park including, dress the circle of remembrance with marble tiles. This will then enable residents to have plaques fitted to remember their loved ones. We will also complete the gravelling around the memorial garden area. Gravel the rose garden area at the entrance to Los Palacios and finish tiling the welcome wall. Again we hope to complete all memorial park work by May. Our final main project will be to complete the northern perimeter edge of the central park. This will include clearing the area, putting plants in ,applying membrane and gravelling the whole area. Paths leading to the central area of the park, are to be concreted and four new benches will be placed in the central area to allow people to sit and enjoy the park. In addition to our regular bucket collection at the Thursday market and book stall donations on a Friday, our entertainments team have several events planned to help fund all of our planned improvements. A ladies only trip to Benidorm on 13th May, 15 euros per person. A well dressing ceremony in May, (date to be confirmed) Our summer dance at Mariano’s restaurant on 11th July Race night at the Vista bar on 14th October. Ladies shopping day at Zenia stopping off at Iceland on

the return journey on 27th November. Finally our Christmas dance, details of which will be announced in due course. Please support all our activities to help ensure we can deliver all our plans for 2015. Every euro you donate is used to fund our projects, as every member of our group gives all their time, completely free of charge. We hope you agree that our plans will significantly improve our area and make this an even better place to live.

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

Thanks to all those who supported and helped organise our Race and Games night (including The Black Bull, Liz’s Café and Quickprint for sponsoring some of the prizes). It was a great evening and raised much needed funds towards our future projects! This time last year we began the largest project so far completed by Green Fingers, with the help and support of Mazarron Council and Colin from the Golf Club: The large area at the bottom of the dual carriageway and the avenue of trees along the Golf Club side of the rambla were cleared, landscaped and planted, then the decorative gravel layer added. This area has suffered in the recent spell of very cold weather so some of the Race Night profits will pay to replace and supplement trees and plants in these areas. Our strict Monday rota of street sweeping and weed spraying by the Maintenance Team continues, despite

A new study has revealed what Spaniards have known for centuries: that taking an afternoon siesta has considerable health benefits. The study was carried out on a group of 11 men between the ages of 25 and 32, who took part in two laboratory sessions, where food and light were strictly controlled. Lack of sleep can constitute a public health hazard according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, because it can reduce productivity as well as cause car crashes or industrial accidents. People who sleep less are also more prone to develop chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and depression. Top tips for a slumbersome siesta: Make it part of your daily routine. ZEN TEACHINGS

We were born naked, wet and hungry, and got slapped on our backside - then things just kept getting worse.

1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me for the path is narrow. In fact, leave me alone. No one is listening until you pass wind. Always remember you’re unique. Just like everyone else. Never test the depth of the water with both feet. If you think nobody cares whether you’re alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes. If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you. If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything. Some days you are the dog, some days you are the tree. Good judgement comes from bad experience ... And most of that comes from bad judgement. A closed mouth gathers no foot. Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your lips are moving.

Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

6 Health Benefits of Cauliflour Because of its beneficial effects on numerous aspects of health, cauliflower can easily be described as a superfood. Some of its most impressive benefits follow: 1. Fight Cancer Cauliflower contains sulforaphane, a sulfur compound that has also been shown to kill cancer stem cells, thereby slowing tumor growth. Some researchers believe eliminating cancer stem cells may be key to controlling cancer. For instance, research has shown that combining cauliflower with curcumin(the active compound in the spice turmeric) may help prevent and treat prostate cancer. 2. Boost Heart Health Sulforaphane in cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables has been found to significantly improve blood pressure and kidney function. Scientists believe sulforaphane’s benefits are related to improved DNA methylation, which is crucial for normal cellular function and proper gene expression, especially in the easily damaged inner lining of the arteries known as the endothelium. 3. It’s AntiInflammatory You need some level of inflammation in your body to stay healthy. However, it’s also possible, and increasingly common, for the

inflammatory response to get out of hand. If your immune system mistakenly triggers an inflammatory response when no threat is present, it can lead to significant inflammation-related damage to the body, a condition linked to cancer and other diseases, depending on which organs the inflammation is impacting. Cauliflower contains a wealth of anti-inflammatory nutrients to help keep inflammation in check, including indole-3-carbinol or I3C, an antiinflammatory compound that may operate at the genetic level to help prevent the inflammatory responses at its foundational level. 4. It’s Rich in Vitamins and Minerals Eating cauliflower regularly is a simple way to get these much-needed nutrients into your body. For instance, one serving of cauliflower contains 77 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C. It’s also a good source of vitamin K, protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, fiber, vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid, potassium, and manganese. 5. Boost Your Brain Health Cauliflower is a good source of choline, a B vitamin known for its role in brain development. Choline intake during pregnancy “super-charged” the brain activity of animals in utero, indicating that it may boost cognitive function, and improve learning and memory. It may even diminish age-related memory decline and your brain’s vulnerability to toxins during childhood, as well as conferring protection later in life.6 6. Detoxification Support Cauliflower helps your body’s ability to detoxify in multiple ways. It contains antioxidants that support Phase 1 detoxification along with sulfur-containing nutrients important for Phase 2 detox activities. The glucosinolates in cauliflower also activate detoxification enzymes.

Tips to Improve Your Golfswing

2. Give Your Spine The Forearm Make sure you’re on-plane at the top of the swing to guarantee solid ballstriking

2015

3. Use Your Body For Power Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a dead-stop position. Without taking a backswing, try to drag the ball into the air. If you’re a player who uses his or her hands to control the club, you’ll probably struggle at first. However, you’ll quickly find that once you start moving the club with your body, you’ll begin to get the ball in the air more consistently. This helps you turn fully through the ball on the downswing.

Creating the proper wrist hinge in the backswing will lead to noticeably better ballstriking and, as a result, more consistent distance and direction on all iron shots.

4. Hinge For Power Amateurs have problems hitting crisp iron shots due to two fatal flaws. First, the takeaway tends to be too low to the ground, which delays the proper hinging of the wrists until too late in the backswing. Second, in a misguided effort to create power, the arms tend to swing too far in the backswing. This causes a breakdown in posture and usually leads to a reverse pivot. These flaws cause mishits and a lack of distance and control. Several simple steps can be taken to gain control over the length of the swing in order to create more solid contact. At setup, a 45degree angle should be present between the left arm and the

Keep Your Hands Low Limiting the height of the follow through will effectively reduce the height of your shots. The lower the hands, the lower the ballflight. Moving the ball back in your stance or choosing a stronger club and trying to swing easy are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but they’re less reliable and more difficult to execute. Instead, keep your hands low in the finish (compare the two photos at right), and the trajectory of your shots will be lower.

and increased accuracy. Notice in the photo at left how my right forearm is parallel to my spine, my left wrist is flat and my elbows and arms form a tight triangle. These are indications that I’ve rotated my shoulders into the backswing perfectly.

clubshaft. This starts the swing with the wrists already hinged halfway to the necessary 90 degrees. During the takeaway, the hands should stay close to the ground while the clubhead moves up quickly. The goal is to get the left thumb pointing at the right shoulder as soon as possible. You’ll know you’ve achieved the proper wrist hinge when your left arm is parallel to the ground and the clubshaft is perpendicular to it. This sets the wrists much earlier in the backswing, eliminating the need to swing the arms too far at the top. The tendency to lose posture and reverse pivot will be removed with this more compact golf swing.

The production run of 24 units was chosen to link the car to the 24-hour races in which Aston competes and because it is coming out in the year of the 24th James Bond film, Spectre, for which Aston is providing its special DB10 sports car.

The Aston Martin Vulcan is the British marque’s entry into the hypercar arena. Just 24 examples of the £1.8 million track-only car will be made. It will be powered by the most powerful normally aspirated car engine in production, an 800bhpplus 7.0-litre V12. The Vulcan is named after the aircraft that once used Aston’s Gaydon headquarters when it was an RAF base. It is built around a carbonfibre tub and is made almost exclusively of exotic, lightweight materials. A crack team of engineers from Aston’s Special Projects division headed by David King and handpicked designers, including exterior design chief Miles Nurnberger and interior design boss Matt Hill, have worked with Aston Martin Racing (AMR) driver Darren Turner on all aspects of the car to ensure it is an uncompromised track tool. At the Vulcan’s core is a two-seat carbonfibre tub derived from that used by the One-77. About 50% of the tub is new, with the chassis made stiffer and lighter and adapted to fit a full FIA-spec roll cage. Aston has worked with engineering firm Multimatic on the chassis and body development, as it did with the One-77.

The as-yet unnamed car is understood to provide clues as to the look of Volkswagen’s CC replacement, which will form part of the eighth-generation Passat range when it goes on sale towards the end of this year. The car also shows off Volskwagen’s new design language. come from the Passat GTE, which made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The petrol-electric hybrid - which mates a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor - is capable of returning up to 141mpg. Given the upmarket push taken by the standard Passat, it’s likely that the new CC will continue that trend, taking the fight to rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A5 Sportback. Indeed, Volkswagen has said the new car will be positioned “above” the outgoing CC

of the car, with prominent lower air vents integrated into the front bumper. At the rear, the swept-back design features a prominent boot lip with dual exhaust exits. While official powertrain details are yet to be revealed, Volkswagen has reportedly confirmed the CC concept is powered by a turbocharged petrol engine in conjunction with two electric motors. An “innovative” four-wheel drive system is also promised. Inspiration for the powertrain is likely to

This last month has seen us home little Kiko. He is joining Heidi, Casper and Teddy , and the extended family over there in the New Forrest, Good luck little lad we know that you will have a great life, and thank you to our friends Caralyn and Gary for giving yet another one of our AAR dogs a home .. Benji has also found a new home in Alhama, He is settled with three other dogs in the campo, so it’s good long walks for him in a morning and lazy afternoon siestas, you know this is what Kevin came to Spain to do, but of course I had other ideas! (Sorry Kev) What a wonderful life, many thanks to Mary and John for taking Benji under their wing, We were contacted this month about two pups that we had rescued a few months ago now and homed near Torrevieja. Things were not working there so we decided that in the best interest of the pups that we would help to find new homes for them. They are such a cute pair but we thought that we would have difficulty placing two pups together. However at a recent open day at Maipe riding stables in Cartagena a couple fell in love with them both so the pups are now residents in La Zenia. Which means that I will have to visit quite regularly (there´s a wonderful shopping centre there too). On the donkey front we rescued a further two donkeys and a pony this month. One donkey and the pony came from the parerra the other donkey came from a Spanish resident in the city of Murcia. He had been keeping the donkey on some what was believed to be waste ground near his home. The donkey had been there about a year, he is 15 months old, when the owner received a message from the landowner telling him that the animal had to move. The man tried to home the boy but couldn´t so reluctantly called the parerra to get them to take him. However there had no place for him so we were called to see if we could help. We contacted the owner who stated that the landowner had that morning evicted the donkey and he was now tied to a lamp post in the street. Emergency transport was called; he is now safe in Maipe, along with Lucero and Cloud and the other two from the parerra. Huge Thanks to the Phoenix group of Roldan who have donated 150€ to the girl from the parerra we have named her Phoenix!!! Maipe is Fuente side of Cartagena, if you would like to visit please contact me and I will gladly pass details to you.

GOMAD ARTICLE for March 2015 Christian Humanitarian Aid Charity in the Mazarrón & surrounding area helping those in need irrespective of race, creed or status. I would like to start by sending our sincere condolences to your usual writer, Anne Bennett, for the loss of her partner Allan and to Allan’s family. I write this in reply to last month’s appeal for volunteers; in December 2014 I attended, for the first time, one of our Aid Days in the Puerto De Mazarrón. I was amazed how many people were waiting, both Spanish and Moroccan as well as other nationalities too. All were extremely grateful to receive a ‘family’, ‘couple’ or ‘single’ bag of food. As it was Christmas we had extra presents and sweets for the children and also clothes if required. Any children who had a birthday that month each received a brand new pair of shoes donated by Anne Tugwell. This was a real eye opener. I would advise anyone if you want to see what Making a Difference is all about then come to an Aid Day and see for yourself. The Table Top team (Camposol sector B, the 2nd and last Friday of every month) would like to thank you all for your continued support and look forward to seeing you all at the next one. Special thanks go to the Mazarrón Bowls Club for their donation of €150 with which we were able to buy an ample supply shampoo and shower gel. Our gratitude also goes to the Mazarrón Ladies’ Circle who have bought us a large quantity of female sanitary products and to the Camposol Sewing Club who are busy making us 200 pencil cases ready for September when we will be giving every school child one filled with school equipment. Pens, pencils, rubbers, crayons and felttips all make a great donation should you wish to contribute to this appeal. We are also looking for clothes for the younger generation. Clothing and shoes for children and teenagers are highly sought after, both in the shops and by our outreach clients. Lastly we would like to thank David Kay for his generous donation of his late wife Dot’s effects. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family for their loss. Our appeal for more volunteers continues. If you can spare a few hours a week, it would be a great help. Please call into our shops or telephone 634 357 137 or email madmazarron@live. com. We thank you for your continued support for without your generous donations we could not continue to help those in our community less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you to all of you. By Sandra Bowron

My dwarf girlfriend went to work this morning upset with me, because I’ve been taking the mickey out of her size. So I’m going all out to make it up to her tonight. I’ve got a good bottle of wine in, and bought her the latest dvd box set of her favourite programme. When she gets in from work I’m going to order her favourite takeaway for her tea, then go upstairs and run her a nice hot sink. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, “How much money do you make a week?” A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, “I make $400 a week. Why?” The CEO said, “Wait right here.” He walked back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy $1,600 in cash and said, “Here’s four weeks’ pay. Now GET OUT and don’t come back.” Feeling pretty good about himself the CEO looked around the room and asked, “Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here?” From across the room a voice

said, “Pizza delivery guy from Domino’s.” In the Amazon rain forest, three explorers were walking. One was Irish, another English, and the last American. Soon, they came across a tribe, and the leader of the tribe told them that if they wanted to pass through this territory, they had to pass the three caves test. The explorers agreed and asked what the three cave test was. The leader of the tribe took them to the caves, where he said, “Inside the first, there are three bottles of rum, each 100 years old and said to be toxic. You have to drink one each. In the second is a lion with a thorn in his foot. You must remove the thorn. In the third is a woman who has never been satisfied, and she must be satisfied.” The three men were hesitant but could not back out, so the American went into the first cave, drank the bottle, and died soon afterward. The Englishman was second. He went into the first cave, drank the bottle, then went into the second cave.

There was a lot of commotion and roaring. No one emerged from the cave. Lastly, the Irish man went into the first cave and drank the bottle. He went into the second cave. At first, there was a lot of commotion, and then there was a soft purring sound. Then he entered the last cave. Two minutes later, he came out puzzled and asked, “Where’s the thorn in the woman’s foot...?” Two deaf men were talking on their coffee break about being out late the night before. The first man signed to his friend, “My wife was asleep when I got home, so I was able to sneak into bed, and not get into trouble.” The second deaf man signed back, “Boy you’re lucky. My wife was wide awake, waiting for me in bed, and she started swearing at me and giving me hell for being out so late.” The first deaf man asked, “So, what did you do?” The second man replied, “I turned out the light.”
