JOURNAL
THE Dear Reader,
Welcome to the May edition of the Journal! At last, finally the weather is changing and the days and nights are getting warmer. Is it just me or did that seem like a really, really long winter? I won’t complain however as it would have been a lot worse if I had spent it in the UK. (I get the shivers just thinking about it) We are really pleased with all the positive feedback that we keep getting about the magazine via e-mail. I even have people stopping me in the street to tell me how much they enjoy reading “The Journal”. We are always working to make the magazine a little bit better than the previous month and it’s nice when people take the time to tell us what a great job we are doing. As long as our readers enjoy the magazine, and our advertisers are getting the results they need then we feel that we are doing good job and your feedback means a lot to us. Last month it was April Fools day and we had a couple of stories in the magazine that were not quite factually correct, that is to say, they were downright nonsense! As always its great to hear that people enjoyed them and saw the funny side. But let’s just make sure that we are clear on what was fiction and what wasn’t: Paramount Studios Ferris Wheel, Google can track your every move using your smart phone, and The Facebook Real Life Like Button. All 3 were completely made up stories! As I mentioned in last month’s magazine I ran the Murcia City half Marathon in aid of Brain Tumour research. It was a great day to run, overcast and not too warm and it was a great way to see Murcia in way that is otherwise impossible. Running round taking in the sights on streets that would on any other day be gridlocked with traffic was certainly a novel way to sightsee. In the end I finished the race in 1hour 35mins 26 seconds which I was pleased with considering I was expecting a time of around 1hour 40. More importantly I raised over 200 pounds sterling for a great charity and I would like to thank all the people who donated, family, friends, readers of the magazine and advertisers. A Special thanks goes to Tony Smith the Funeral Director and the guys at Rainbow Satellites for their kind donations. Once again thank you to all our readers and advertisers for their continued support in making us the best free lifestyle magazine in the Costa Calida. Happy Reading, Robert Rutherford

affordable rents.
The commissioner praised the efforts of pressure groups such as the Mortgage Victims Platform (PAH) and labor unions to stem a flood of evictions by banks. There have been an estimated 86,000 evictions in Andalusia since 2007.
The decree specifies that a home will be deemed to be empty if it lacks contracts for the supply of water and electricity or the consumption of these is very low. Other factors that will be used to determine if a property is empty include whether mail addressed to the home is redirected elsewhere. The government will have to demonstrate that a home has been unoccupied for six months in order to declare it empty. The administration plans to set up a register of empty homes and a system of inspection to verify if a property is unoccupied.
Individuals with empty property will not be subject to the decree, which also will not apply to second homes, tourist accommodation and property rented out on a temporary basis. The Andalusian government has approved a decree whereby in the most extreme cases the homes of the most needy families subject to eviction proceedings initiated by banks will be embargoed by the region for a maximum of three years. The Andalusian commissioner responsible for public works and housing, Elena Cortés, said the government also plans to impose fines of up to 9,000 euros on banks and real estate companies that leave empty homes that are fit to live in. Cortés said the measures aimed at “meeting social needs” are backed by existing legislation. Fines imposed for leaving homes empty will be used to help house people. The decree also reinforces a system of

Individuals will also be encouraged to put empty homes they own on the rental market by providing them with tax breaks and insurance cover for unpaid rent and damage to their property. The decree took immediate effect. It will be subsequently debated in the regional assembly with a view to its being passed into law. The initiative is aimed at getting between an estimated 700,000 and one million empty homes in the region onto the rental market. Of this figure between an estimated 350,000 and 500,000 properties are owned by corporate bodies, mainly banks and real estate companies.
Cases of the embargo of housing will apply only to situations which affect the permanent home of a family and in which eviction could lead that family to find itself in a situation of “social exclusion.” Such cases will also only apply when a significant deterioration in the economic circumstances of the family since the mortgage on the home was granted can be demonstrated. Embargoes will also only be enforced in the case of families with income of no more than three times the monthly benchmark amount for entitlement to social assistance and grants, which for this year has been set at 532 euros per month.
The government is also aiming to increase its pool of available housing at

UK’s debate on cannabis continues
to January 2009 – served to increase smoking of the drug by 25%, and its regular consumption by 8%. The temporary change in the law saw the maximum penalty for possessing the substance cut from five to two years and was widely supported as an important first step by pro-decriminalisation groups, eager to stress the importance of offering treatment for drug users as opposed to jail time. This research comes at the same time that lawmakers in the UK have made a distinction between drugs produced from cannabis under rigorous scientific procedures and crude herbal cannabis, which carries a higher risk of abuse.
Whilst the UK’s Home Secretary, Theresa May, has committed to a ‘what works’ review of different European drug policies, she can call on recently released research by Newcastle University to support her claims that Britain’s 40-year-old drug laws do not need reforming. According to the study, the previous Labour government’s reclassification of cannabis from a Class B to Class C status – which lasted from January 2004

all kinds of cannabis largely depends on May’s ability to focus on research findings like those collated by Newcastle University, and shrug off the spate of success stories currently emitting from parts of Holland, Germany and, most notably Portugal, where a state policy of ‘depenalisation’ has already achieved fruitful results.

FAST - Easter Fayre Saturday the23rd March saw the doors of Marianos, Camposol ‘A’ opening at 8.30am in order to set everything up ready for the stall holders and the FAST Easter Fayre. By 10.20 all was ready for the main doors to be opened to the people of Camposol and visitors to the area to browse their way through over 30 trader stalls looking for goodies, bargains and prizes. The doors t opened just before 11am and in came a steady flow of shoppers over the next few hours making for a highly successful day. Over 400 people attended the fayre demonstrating in part the wonderful support given to FAST and the unique service they offer within the urbanisation of Camposol. The day was a resounding success raising €3,549.07. This was only possible through the support given by all involved from the FAST Support Team making all the arrangements, the members setting up and taking down tables and manning FAST stalls throughout the day and of course Marianos for allowing us to hold the fayre in the first place. Our thanks to the Steak Out for putting up with and supplying our support team with the facilities to sell raffle tickets every Friday….The stall holders and Traders who keep coming back for more and of course you the residents and visitors to Camposol for all the appreciation you

some new faces at the event. The night started with a presentation to Martine Shindler, who single-handedly
raised 1135€ for MABS Mazarrón in last year’s Race for Life, receiving loud cheers and applause from the audience for this awesome achievement. Then, the races began; slowly at first but, as the night progressed, the atmosphere grew more intense and everyone got into the racing spirit. A welcome interval to recharge their glasses also meant that they could enjoy a light-hearted game of ‘Play Your Cards Right’ which sadly produced no winners but six lucky raffle winners took home an array of luxury prizes and a further winner taking home 80€ from the Forecast Trimester Game. After the interval, the excitement increased, with the throng growing even louder as a betting frenzy began with the horses being auctioned to hopeful owners.
Close to 90 people attended MABS Cancer Support Group’s Race Night at The Clubhouse, Camposol on Tuesday, 2 April. MABS Mazarrón was pleased to welcome their regular supporters and

SPANGLES DOES IT FOR CHARITY
Saturday, 30 March, saw Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus taking part in a big charity fundraising day in Mil Palmeras. Organised by JP’s Bar in the square, this annual event has helped to raise thousands of Euros for local charities, such as the AECC, MABS Cancer Support Group and EMAUS, the children’s home in Elche. The main event of the day was a bike ride, with over 70 riders taking part. Supporters returned to the bar and were entertained by Spangles. “We have a very busy time leading up to our annual contest, which takes place on 13 April in Benalmádena, Málaga” said Spangles Musical Director, Gail Grainger, “but we support local charity and were delighted to take part in this great fundraising day.” It’s anticipated that the final total of funds raised will reach 2,500€, which
will be divided between the AECC, EMAUS and MABS Murcia. There will be a presentation night at JP’s Bar on Friday, 19 April from 8.00 pm and all are welcome. For further details, please call Graham on 965 060 691. Following on from their gold medal success in 2011, Spangles has released a CD called ‘Pure Gold’, which includes their two winning contest songs and many audience favourites. ‘Pure Gold’ is on sale at 5€ and makes an ideal gift. Call 968 432 525 or 968 334 527 to order your copy. The chorus will be competing again on 13 April in Benalmádena and hope to return to Los Alcázares with gold once more. Spangles welcomes new members so, if you’re looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit Spangles when they rehearse at Las Claras? They meet every Thursday from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Office 968 152 191 Mobile 618 615 903 Doga. It’s Yoga. For Dogs. No, really… What is doga?
In doga, owners assist their dogs with performing doggy versions of classic yoga poses, like “upward paw” (sun salutation). Humans use their pets as additional weight for their own stretches. The classes may also involve performing massages on your dogs and acupressure to ensure relaxation. Dogs are made for yoga Dogs doing yoga may seem strange, but our canine friends actually do common yoga poses in their everyday life. Downward-facing dog anyone? Other standard poses for dogs include:

Chaturanga pose in which dogs lie on their stomachs while someone strokes their back Chair pose in which dogs sit on their hind legs with their front paws in the air while someone behind them holds them Savasana relaxation pose in which dogs lie on their backs while someone rubs their belly The benefits of doga Not only will doga help relax and soothe your wound-up pet, but it can also aid in digestion through the massage portion

cooperative doga partner can actually add a little extra oomph to your routine. They add extra weight, deepening your stretches and helping you get closer to your best friend both physically and emotionally. Downsides to doga As much fun as doga sounds, could there possibly be a downside? Many yoga devotees thinks so. Some feel it may be a fad that detracts from the beauty of an otherwise serious practice. Additionally, while classes exist, there aren’t really any official certifications for doga instructors. There’s also the fact that your dogs don’t really know what’s going on (at least not at first). They may bark, distracting you and your fellow participants (and distraction really does defeat the purpose of yoga, doesn’t it?). They also may simply be disinterested in the class altogether, leaving you in downward dog while they chill in the corner. Should you try doga? While you and your dog may both benefit from doga’s stretching and relaxation techniques, perhaps the most important thing you’ll gain by exercising with your pet is the quality time you spend with him. Even if your dog just likes having his belly rubbed or enjoys sitting on your mat while you practice your own techniques, you’re bonding with your animal. It’s believed that when you relax, your dog picks up on your behavior and scent, causing them to relax themselves. In the end, Rover could benefit from yoga just by watching you do it. If you’re still nervous about trying dogya start with a standard yoga video in your own home, allowing your dog to watch you as you go through the exercises. Encourage her to stay close, rubbing her belly or stroking her head between moves. Once she’s comfortable with that, there are several Youtube dogya video workouts that you and you pooch can try out together. At this present time there are no Dogya classes in the region, but if we hear of any we will be sure to let you know!

“IT AIN’T ARF HOT MUM” Here’s the summer cry from every child up and down the Costas of Spain, “I’m hot Mum / Nan” Mum’s reply “have some water”, “Don’t want any”, Mum says “do you want an ice cream?”, “Yes please” Child gets ice cream and is told to sit on plastic sun bed, and the cry comes again “Mum it’s hot” “Well go and sit on the other sun bed, it is made of textilen material and is
breathable so won’t be hot. Did you know that this material idea came from the suits the men wore in space?”, “No. Mum, I like this Sun Bed - is this the one you bought from Furniture Plus with the matching table and chairs?” “Yes dear”. “I won’t drop my ice cream on it Mum – Honest”. “Don’t worry about it they are washable”. Here we go again, “Mum, I’m hot and my ice cream is melting before I can eat it” Mum’s reply – “So go and sit under one of the parasols in the shade and finish your ice cream”. “Mum, I do like these parasols you bought from Furniture Plus, my favourite colour is
the yellow one with the frills around the edges. The stone base to hold it up is very heavy, I can’t move it”. Mum thinks that’s not a bad thing! “Mum, I have finished my ice cream and I’m hot again”. Mum says “well go in the pool”. Some peace at last, but not for long, “Mum, I’m tired” Mum’s reply “Go and lay on the sunbed” “Mum, it’s not as comfortable as the mattress on my bed that you bought from Furniture Plus”. Mum’s reply “Get the new thick sun bed cushion you bought with Daddy this morning out of the car and put it on the sun bed” “Mum, this sun bed cushion is soft and comfy” and after a while the child is asleep. Mum looks down on the sleeping child and says I am so glad we went to Furniture Plus. Yes, you guessed right, written by Chris at Furniture Plus, we like to help in any way we can to make your life easier in Spain……and have some fun along the way.

Why do we gossip so much?
Well we shouldn’t really be telling you this but…
UC Berkeley social psychologist Robb Willer, a coauthor of the study, published in this month’s online issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, said : “Gossip gets a bad rap, but we’re finding evidence that it plays a critical role in the maintenance of social order ... Spreading information about the person whom they had seen behave badly tended to make people feel better, quieting the frustration that drove their gossip.”
Living in expat Spain we are certainly never short on things to gossip about. At times it seems like gossip is the very thing that makes our world turn. Mostly gossip can be a harmless pastime (did we ever tell you the one about the Paramount Ferris wheel?), something that keeps us entertained over coffee with friends and turns real life into a soap opera. But at times gossip can be malicious too. Recently, a number our advertisers have been forced to deny rumours that they have gone out of business. Indeed around 18 months ago here at The Journal , we had to do the same. One time I even had to strenuously deny a rumour that I had died, which actually proved more difficult that you might imagine! While we might get fed up with gossip, perhaps we should actually embrace it as it can be a good thing according to new research from the University of Berkeley in California. Tests on a group of volunteers showed that gossip helps to prevent bad behavior, prevent exploitation and reduces stress levels. Gossiping can also be therapeutic, the volunteers’ heart rates appeared to increase when hearing gossip, but lowered again once they passed on the information to someone else. A problem shared is a problem halved indeed.
page 14
It seems as social animals we have a strong urge to pass on unsavory information to others, and people even spent their own money in the study, using a “gossip note” they had to pay for during an economic game in which participants could warn people about to play against cheaters. The researchers suggest that people shouldn’t feel bad about passing on information if it is likely to help those involved, exposing vices or protecting someone against exploitation.
themselves. The researchers at Berkeley used a set of four games in which players were rewarded by generous behavior towards each other, measured by how many dollars or points they shared. 51 volunteers were attached to heart rate monitors - when they saw one player cheating their heart rates increased. They then had the opportunity to warn the honest player that their opponent was cheating, by way of the gossip notes. As the note was passed their heart rates dropped. The second experiment had 111 participants answer questionnaires about their level of altruism and cooperativeness. They then went to watch the economic trust game - the more sociable observers reported feeling more frustrated by the cheating. Matthew Feinberg, a UC Berkeley social psychologist and lead author of the paper said : “A central reason for engaging in gossip was to help others out - more so than just to talk trash about the selfish individual ... Also, the higher participants scored on being altruistic, the more likely they were to experience negative emotions after witnessing the selfish behavior and the more likely they were to engage in
Willer points out, however, that the study was focused on the positive sides of gossip, passing on useful information or “prosocial” warnings about untrustworthy or dishonest people. The study did not look at the typical tabloid type gossip involving celebrities and their personal issues. This author would suspect that this type of gossip is City and Guilds an almost imaginary Qualified or invented version of the more positive prosocial / protective gossip, Kitchens, Wardrobes, Cupboards, Windows, in that the behavior of a celebrity Doors, Car Ports, and Pergolas. with a drug or Dry Lining and Laminate Specialist marital problem Also man and a • Smooth Finish Walls doesn’t necessarily transit van” removals and pickups in the have any real or local area including • No more cracks IKEA immediate effect • Reduces heat loss on our daily wellbeing, although • Improves sound proofing perhaps studying Call for a no obligation quote on the behavior and mistakes of famous people, might help Email: drcdavidson@hotmail.com those spectators Serving the Public for over 30 years avoid those kinds of Free Estimates- Honest and reliable- No Job too Small life path mistakes

the gossip. The third test raised the stakes and had participants use a portion of their pay from being involved in the experiments
Have you seen the Journal?
As Willer says, the results from all four experiments show that: “When we observe someone behave in an immoral way, we get frustrated ... But being able to communicate this information to others who could be helped makes us feel better.
Third of those evicted in Spain are foreigners to cover the “cost of the warning notes. Although they could not affect the outcome of the game, they still wanted to send the gossip. The final test was done with 300 online volunteers drafted from Craig’s List, who played a similar version of the economic trust game over the internet. They played using raffle tickets that could be collected in the game, the more tickets a person had, the more chance to win a $50 prize. The players were told that observers could pass messages about their honesty during breaks in the game, and virtually all the players, even those answering the questionnaire as being less altruistic, behaved better.

A further 8,000 second homes were also repossessed, while 14,229 families effectively gave their homes back via so-called ‘dacions’, which are effectively a means of cancelling a mortgage loan by handing over the keys of the property to the bank. This practice is usually reserved for specific situations where the family in question is very poor and the bank believes it will be impossible to recover the mortgage. In the past dacions have come under fire from critics who believe they encourage a culture of non-payment of loans, but these figures suggest they could be becoming normal banking practice in Spain. The hot points in Spain include Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga, which saw 2,268 repossessions for first homes.
NEARLY 1,000 British families faced forced eviction proceedings last year. According to figures released from the College of Property Registrars Britons accounted for 3% of repossession cases in 2012. In total, 30,034 first homes were repossessed by My name is Elisa and I am looking for work! the banks in 2012 I can clean your home, tidy your garden, do your – or one every ironing, help cook for you, do your shopping etc etc. 12-and-a-half minutes – because Whatever you need, I can help! of non-payment on Excellent low rates per hour. mortgages. Chair – Michelle Miles You have heard the phrase “no news is good news”….well that is definitely the case. We may have been a little quiet over the last few months but believe me…plenty has been happening behind the scenes in the countdown to the big day. The Committee took a decision some time ago to cancel the usual fund raising social events and to raise funds through sponsorship and raffles. It was a big decision but with so many worthwhile

charities in the area staging events we feel it was the right decision, given the current economic climate. However we did feel that we wanted to do at least one event before the Fiesta and have teamed up with Mabs Mazarron to stage a Grand Charity Spring Ball on Friday 24th May. It will be hosted by The Clubhouse Camposol and will be a night of “Glitz and Glamour”. There will be a fabulous hot and cold buffet and entertainment from Martin Ross, Michelle and a Table Magician. There will also be a free taxi service across Camposol. The Grand Raffle Prize this year is a Dream Holiday to the value of 5000 Euro!!! We will only sell a maximum of 750 tickets and the lucky winner will be able to select the holiday of their choice. Whether that be a Caribbean Cruise, flights to visit relatives in New Zealand, a ski holiday or something closer to home. There will also be several runnerup prizes all of which will be drawn on the day of the Fiesta. Once again the whole event will be compered by the one and only Byron. The show starts at around 6pm on Friday 14th June with a “Tribute to the Musical Greats of our Time”. A night of music and dance to suit all ages. Saturday will be the “Fiesta Fun Day”. Starting at around 10am there will be a constant stream of non-stop activities and entertainment until midnight. The Fiesta will finish with the usual Grand

10 good reasons to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Sponsored by Frutas Iguazu 1. Eating more fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet may help you reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and some forms of cancer. 2. The fiber in fruits and vegetables may help to lower blood cholesterol levels. 3. Eating more fruits and vegetables may help reduce your chance of Type 2 diabetes. 4. Generally, fruits and vegetables are lower in calories than many other foods, so choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables can help to lower your overall calorie intake. 5. Foods that are rich in potassium like oranges and bananas may help you maintain a healthy blood pressure. 6. Almost all fruits and many vegetables are low in fat and sodium. Also, fruits and vegetables are naturally cholesterol free.
page 18
7. Eating whole fruits and vegetables adds fiber to your diet. Fiber fills you up. This feeling of fullness may help you maintain your weight. 8. If you are a woman of childbearing age or in your first trimester of pregnancy, you need folate (folic acid), a nutrient that is found in fruits and vegetables. Folate reduces the risk of birth defects during your baby’s development. 9. Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals (plant compounds) that may help prevent or delay disease and help you maintain good health. 10. And finally, here’s a great reason to eat more fruits and vegetables – the variety of colors, flavors, and textures that fruits and vegetables bring to meals and snacks. For a huge selection of the finest quality Fruits and Vegetables at fantastic prices vist Frutas Iguazu in Totana. They are open from 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday. Why is May the 4th Called Star Wars Day?
Say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you’ll hear the pun that Star Wars fans worldwide have turned into a rallying cry to proclaim their love of the saga. It’s the worldwide day to say “May the Force be with you” to all, and celebrate the beloved Star Wars story that binds our galaxy together. One of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979, as described here by author Alan Arnold while he was chronicling the making of The Empire Strikes Back for Lucasfilm: Friday, May 4 “Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.”
movies of the Star Wars saga debuted in May (starting with the original Star Wars on May 25, 1977) and this year, May 25 marks the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. The month of May includes George Lucas’ birthday (May 14, 1944), and has been the traditional start date of the popular Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort (this year, the fun begins on May 14). With the exciting launch of a new trilogy of movies beginning with Star Wars: Episode VII coming in the near future, this day to celebrate the saga and its amazing fans is certain to become even bigger each year.
Pets as Star Wars characters
Some people really, really love ‘Star Wars.’ And by “love” we mean their borderline obsessed. The only thing that could make it better is if their small dogs somehow got involved. Which is to say, it just got better. These dogs display almost as much love as their owners feel for the fantasy franchise. From surprisingly realistic Ewoks to wise mini-Yodas, check out our favorite dogs dressed as ‘Star Wars’ characters.
Once the Internet allowed Star Wars fans around the world to connect with one another, May the 4th soon became a grassroots tradition each year, with fans online and offline proclaiming it “Star Wars Day.” While the idea of May the 4th did not start with Lucasfilm, the film company that created Star Wars has fully embraced the spirit of fandom that makes the day so special. The official blog at StarWars.com as well as the official Star Wars social media channels on Twitter (@starwars, hashtag #MayThe4thBeWithYou) and Facebook help spread the word and showcase fan activity. More and more official partners have offered sales, giveaways and exclusives, and have hosted parties and other activities to mark the day. May the 4th kicks off a season of celebration, particularly since the month of May has always been important to Star Wars fans. The six live-action

Increase Your Bed-u-cation!
Choosing a new mattress can seem overwhelming. There are so many different types and sizes, and considering it is a major purchase, the decision of purchasing a new mattress is not one to be taken lightly. First, do you need to change your mattress, we are advised to change our mattress every 5 – 7 years. But you are the best judge as to when the mattress should be changed within this time frame. What is the condition and comfort like on the mattress? When changing your bed sheets, take a moment each time to have a look at the mattress and its condition. Lifestyle changes can accelerate the need to change a mattress, has something changed, do you read more and sit up in bed? Whilst sleeping are you moving about a lot more? Is there one of you or two of you in the bed now? Have sleeping patterns changed? You need to try and think about all aspects, whilst making the decision to buy a new mattress. Our bodies naturally change over time, whether that be with weight gain or loss,
even pregnancy, it alls adds different types of stress onto the mattress, including kids jumping about on the bed! A good indicator as to when you may need a new mattress is back pain or a tingle in the arms. Even if you do not have any of these early warning signs, ask yourself when you wake up in the morning, are you really having a good nights sleep? You spend more time on your bed than any other piece of furniture in the home! Therefore, the characteristics of the different mattresses need to be explained to you so you can make an informed decision. But knowing all the technicalities is not the same as the ‘test drive’! First, you need to lie down on several different models in various positions, but especially the one you usually sleep in – and partners should try mattresses together.

Technology sponsored by Tablet reviews Budget: The Asus Nexus 7
The basics The Asus Nexus 7 is a new tablet sold under the Google branding, but made by Asus. It has a 7-inch 280c800 HD backlit IPS scratch-resistant display, and weighs 340 grams. The full size of the tablet measures 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm. There are two versions - an 8GB and 16GB internal storage respectively. Both with 1GB of RAM. It runs the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system and is powered by a quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The good Up to now the majority of Android tablets have gotten a reputation for being, shall we say a little cheap and nasty. There are some great Android tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, but there are some bad, shoddilybuilt tablets. Not the Nexus 7. It may be small, but its solid, actually feels portable, more so than an iPad, and feels great when held thanks to its curved edges and textured back panel. The new Retina Display iPad has set the standard for tablet screens. While the Nexus 7 doesn’t quite reach those heights, its screen is still very good, bright, and displays a sharp picture. And the viewing angles are tops. The Nexus 7 is a delightful nice device for playing games and watching movies on. And its here where the portability really comes into play. The Nexus 7 one of the most suitable tablets for sticking in a bag when you are out and about. Battery life is pretty good, too. Eight hours worth should be more than enough for even the most intensive tablet user. That’s easily enough to fit in a few films, when browsing and indulging in a spot of Google Play gaming action. Another main highlight is of course
page 26
the new Android Jelly Bean operating system bringing with it a new and refined Android interface with no sign of slowdown when browsing its menus. Notifications are better, letting you easily spot when you’ve got mail, or a message from your favourite social networking websites even from the lock screen. Its menus are bright, simple, and easy to navigate. Even those dipping into Android for the first time will find the Nexus 7 a pleasure to use. And it’s loaded with apps, so it’ll be a while yet before you grow bored of it. What with thousands of apps to download from Google play, and utilities such as Google Maps, and access to Google Docs providing some neat and helpful functionality. The Google Nexus 7 is also very well priced, at between £159 (186€) for an 8GB model, and £199 (233€) for the 16GB version, you get a lot for your buck. The bad The Nexus 7 will be able to take advantage of cloud storage solutions such as Google Drive, but the lack of microSD card storage will irk some. Thankfully those opting for the 16GB version will have more than enough memory before resorting to cloud-based storage. Like the iPad there is a lack of Flash, meaning some web pages will not show up as they are meant to, and some apps. However such issues will become less of a problem as time goes on, as websites and apps get updated to cope with the absence of Flash. The bottom line We love the Asus Google Nexus 7. It’s small, relatively cheap, and offers great performance. Despite the lack of expandable memory, it offers near enough a full set of features to make it terrific value for money. Midrange: Barnes and Noble Nook HD+ The basics With its full HD nine inch screen Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ is a close rival to Amazon’s 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD
www.thecamposoljournal.com
tablet. But Amazon’s larger Androidpowered slate isn’t coming to the UK, and the Nook HD+ is on sale right now, giving it a bit of breathing space. Can this tablet create a whole new market for itself? Let’s take a look. The good Barnes & Noble has gone for broke with the screens on its Nook slates, and like the HD, the HD+’ display is absolutely stunning. The 1920x1080 full HD panel is pin sharp, and the best you’ll find for the price - impressive given B&N’s paperback book selling background. These are real media players - you can even plug the Nook HD+ into a TV to watch your videos back on a big screen. The Nook HD+ is a nice size too: at 9-inches, it sits comfortably between the smaller seven inch experience and the bigger 9.7 and up full iPad. We can definitely see this catching on in time. The software meanwhile is identical to the smaller Nook HD: you’ve got a large, easy to use homescreen which can store not just your apps, but particular books, videos and magazines as well. And the superb family filter controls remain the same here: you can have multiple logins, and as a parent completely control what apps and content your kids can get at when it’s their turn. The bad While the solid construction of the Nook HD+ feels like it could take the battering, bruising treatment of a toddler, it’s not all sunshine and roses on the design front. It’s worth noting that there’s a gigantic hole on one corner of it. Barnes & Noble would like this to be a design feature, but it’s not. It’s a hole. And it’s not for a wrist strap or keyring, as this is a large nine inch tablet which you wouldn’t want swinging around. It’s just weird. And like the smaller Nook HD, it also suffers from slow performance. From the web browser to the home screen animations, everything just stutters. It might not be so bad, were it not for the fact that Google’s official Android build - now on 4.2 - is insanely fast by comparison, even on a tablet with even more pixels like the super sharp Google Nexus 10. Why you’d opt for a slate with poorer performance, and a fraction of all the apps on Google’s Play store - even if it costs less - is something we
2013
can’t explain. The bottom line Barnes & Noble took a risk with the Nook HD+, and it deserves to be commended for it. As good as the screen is though, the Nook HD+ is let down by its limited software: you can get almost all the same content on other Android tablets, and at £229 (268€), it’s dangerously close to the price of an iPad 2 or an iPad mini - both of which are packed with apps and boast better build quality. And haven’t been attacked with a hole punch. Luxury: The Google Nexus 10
The Google Nexus 10 is a successor of sorts to Motorola’s Xoom slate: it’s the Google-endorsed new 10-inch tablet running the latest version of Android and designed to lure would-be iPad owners over to its own eco-system. Made by Samsung, it’s a dual-core bad boy running the very latest version of Android, 4.2 “Jelly Bean”, but the screen is the star of the show here: with an absurd, more-than-full-HD 2560x1600 panel, it’s the sharpest Android tablet ever. But better than an iPad? The good Let’s just say it: the screen on the Google Nexus 10 is phenomenal. It’s every bit as stunning as the Retina Display on the third and fourth generation iPads. It really has to be seen to believed: it’s like a printed sticker on of the glass, and makes reading a delight. After using it for a while, you’ll never want to go back. Android 4.2 meanwhile is fantastic, particularly on a tablet of this size. It’s come along away from the early days of 3.0 “Honeycomb”. It’s fast, stunningly easy to use and beautiful: Chrome absolutely flies on the dual-core Exynos processor. Voice search and dictation is faster than Siri on iOS, and really comes into its own on a device you’re likely to
2013
be using on the sofa in your lap. And the new additions in 4.2 work really well here. There’s a new keyboard, which lets you type by dragging your finger across the keyboard, is perfect for writing emails on a big screen which you need to hold with one hand. You can add widgets to the lock screen, so you can see your emails at a glance. And at long last, you can now have multiple accounts so different family members can all use the same device: they can even add their own Google account. It’s incredibly useful, and something we suspect Apple won’t be far behind in bringing to iOS. The bad We could complain about the Google Nexus 10’s build quality: its plastic back is a little creaky, and lacks the cool, beautiful look of a metal-backed iPad. But starting at a very tempting £319 (374€), it’s also £80 (93€) cheaper than the entry level Retina iPad, so we suppose it goes with the territory - it’s not chunky, anyway, at a pleasant 8.9mm deep, and easy to grip. More of a problem is one that Google needs to address with Android tablets as whole: the screen ratio. The wide 16:9 display is great for movies, but is so long, that it all but forces you to use the Google Nexus 10 in landscape mode. It’s less of an issue on the smaller Nexus 7, but on a big slate, it makes browsing the web in portrait mode almost impossible, as it’s so narrow and top heavy. Apple’s right on this one: the iPad’s more squat 4:3 aspect ratio is much better suited to everyday use, not least because it’s easier to type. We’d really like to see the next Nexus slate follow suit. There’s also the issue of apps: as fantastic as Android is on mobiles, it still doesn’t have all the apps and games designed specifically for a larger resolution display. That’s changing, but if you want to do things like edit movies on the go with iMovie, or compose tracks with GarageBand, good luck with that. The bottom line The Google Nexus 10 is by far the best “big” Android tablet we’ve ever seen. The screen alone puts it ahead of the competition, but it still lacks the superior build quality of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer series and the fourthgeneration iPad. It also lacks the latter’s
made-for-tablet apps, and Apple’s eco-system of wireless streaming, accessories and covers. But if you’re tied to Google, and if you can find one, you won’t be disappointed.
Dear Tech Support, Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend to Husband and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend. In addition, Husband uninstalled many other valuable programmes, such as Romance and Personal Attention and then installed undesirable programs such as Cricket, Football, Golfing and Continuous TV. Conversation no longer runs, and Housecleaning simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed, Desperate Dear Desperate, First keep in mind, Boyfriend is an Entertainment Package, while Husband is an Operating System. Please enter the command: ‘http: I Thought You Loved Me.html’ and try to download Tears. Don’t forget to install the Guilt update. If that application works as designed, Husband should then automatically run the applications Jewellery and Flowers, but remember… over-use of the above application can cause Husband to default to Grumpy Silence, Garden Shed or Beer. Beer is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband. In summary, Husband is a great system, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. It also tends to work better running one task at a time. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food and Hot Lingerie. Good Luck, Tech Support

Dawn Llewellyn-Price May, birthday month for me, AKA Taurus the Bull. I have all the classic Taurean traits;-two horns, a tail, flaring nostrils and thundering hooves. Put me in a field or a china shop and watch out. Well, the astrological edict says ‘loyal friends, lovers of beauty, art, and the fine things in life, creative, earthy, financial whiz kids (I obviously hadn’t reached the queue at that point) but the rest ring true. We’re oh-so-slow to anger, but look out when we finally go ‘china shop’ pop. Apparently Taureans make great bankers, and are creative people. I’m quite definitely the latter, and so far removed from the former to be a liability. I can make a Mona Lisa out

of an old baked bean tin, a discarded boot, and a distributor head cap, but getting me to add up two sets of figures or actually open the envelope my bank statement arrives in, and I break out in a panic sweat. Money is best left to others, unless I see new shoes, or anything delectable with that four letter word attached to its label. Sale. Then I whip out my piece of plastic, smile heartily and think ‘yes, it’ll be fine, I haven’t bought anything in ages. Plus it’s half price.’ This will be a total lie, as I’m always using it for QVC, but as that’s online and the postman delivers, it really doesn’t count. Maybe that financial whiz kid part is deep inside me somewhere, as I love a bargain, hate paying full price for anything, and those little red labels in TKMaxx must have been printed specially for me. ‘Last mark-down, best price you’ll get, next stop the bin if YOU, Dawn, don’t buy it!’ Like a red rag to a bull. Only yesterday I bought two litre bottles of shampoo for thirty quid. Thirty Quid? They had the red labels and I was a moth to a flame. But I had actually worked it out in my head and it was cheaper than buying all the smaller bottles, as it will last my Spanish summer (hopefully) and I won’t have bottles stored all over the place, falling out of cupboards to meet me. These not-so-little beauts can just sit on their sulphate-free backsides on the shower floor. And think of the arm work out every time I lift them up and down? Then there was the gorgeous swimsuit (a tenner) I have a drawer full of swimsuits,

but hey, there’s always room for one more, isn’t there girls? Chlorine’s a killer anyway, so they don’t last long and I’m certain they don’t sell swimsuits anywhere in Spain. My financial acumen (!) served me well on Grand National day. ‘Two quid on the nose Aurora’s Encore, please. And I’ll take a price.’ Luckily, my namesake was indeed first past the post, at 66-1. Luckily my Taurean instincts had got me 80-1 on my betting slip. Then I did what Taureans do best; spend, spend, spend. Hasta muy pronto.

Tuesday 19th March saw St Joseph’s day. The Sunday before was of course St Patrick’s. The Trevi celebrated St Pats with a free party and down at Saladillo, Tuesday saw a day fiesta. One o’clock had a mass in the old church, which is only open a couple of times a year. Inside its very simple, stations of the cross on the white walls, an illuminated high alter and benches to sit on. The service only lasted half an hour and was dedicated to St Joseph. The church was full, standing room only! This was followed by a statue of the saint which was paraded in procession across the road and round the fields. Outside the Saladillo restaurant saw paella produced by the restaurant and distributed to the many guests, a very nice mix of Spanish, German, British and Belgians. This was much appreciated and a very good rabbit paella. This was followed by music by Pitu. He has a superb voice and did medleys of classic pop and Spanish. Murcia Dance provided some excellent dance entertainment. It was a lovely warm afternoon, which got a bit cold later, when the sun hid behind clouds. Jose Navarro introduced the event and as mayor of Saladillo organised the event in conjunction with the Camposol fiesta committee. He has certainly made an impact in his short time as mayor and he made it clear that he was mayor of Saladillo. Strange that in all the discussion about names no one has suggested Saladillo to replace Camposol! The service is an annual event and hopefully the fiesta will become imbedded in the areas social life. Several hundred attended which made it the event of the year so far! I thought this month to go slightly further afield and report on some of the very fine restaurants that are within an hour of
2013
Mazarron and Camposol. We do have a Michelin one star half an hour away. Its open day time, and shuts for August! So you are warned, don’t just arrive on the off chance! Book ahead. Any Michelin starred restaurant is worth a visit, but will make a hole in your pocket! It’s La Cabana at El Palmer. On the Murcia/Cartagena motorway you come off at junction 148, sign posted El Palmer. Or you can reach it on the old road, motorway to Alhama, take the old Murcia road at the huge roundabout, and literally follow your nose! You pass La Caverna this way as well, which again is well worth a visit lunch time or evenings. It’s not cheap, but is in a barn set back from the road in the village. It’s run by two lovely expats! At least they consider themselves ex pats since they come from Barcelona. Originally they planned to open their restaurant in the port, but the paperwork was taking so long they went to Alhama! Sound familiar? La Cabana is pen for lunch Monday to Friday. It will set you back anything between 40 and 60 Euros a head. The setting and ambiance are lovely. The Caverna is cheaper; it’s very much a bistro type establishment. The meat and fish, and a to die for veggie dish, are all BBQ. The ambiance is wonderful! Its done out inside like a Flintstone cave and there is a lovely courtyard to sit out in as well. Menu Del Dia is around 16 Euros! An evening a la carte meal will
set you back 20 a head! Situated at Los Ventaorrilllos on the old Murcia road its easily found in the middle of the village tel. 0034 639633779 for a table. Last month I celebrated our local South Asian restaurants. There are some stunning Asian restaurants outside the immediate area. In Murcia there are two Japanese restaurants worth the trip. One of them, the Enso Suchi, has two offshoots, one near La Manga just past Cartagena. Personally I love Japanese cuisine. I was introduced to it in Bradford where an excellent one functioned for some time. Much of the food is noodle based but they produced an absolute corking smoked chicken curry. There is another in York which we visited last august, which again is very creditable. Presentation and ambiance are very much part of the Japanese experience. Brits have for long put South Asian food at the top of the culinary list, Thai food has nearly caught up, but for those who love intensely delicate flavours, then nothing touches Japanese. The problem is that many just associate Japanese food with sushi, raw fish dishes, many of which I have

The Japanese restaurant in Murcia, Enso Suchi is considered the top Murcian restaurant, even ahead of the La Cabana, that’s out of over 270 restaurants. However the one near Cartagena, on the way to La Manga is nearer and considered well worth the trip. Again you are talking 40 to 60 Euros a head. But the service, atmosphere and above all the food will make your trip worthwhile. Rod Sawyer

This month with the onset of summer we thought it may be a good idea to give you some ideas for summer drinks
Limeade for grown-ups
Recipes Non-alchololic refreshing, summery cocktail for the designated driver. Muddle the sugar with leaves from the mint using a pestle and mortar (or use a small bowl and the end of a rolling pin). Put a handful of crushed ice into 2 tall glasses. Divide the lime juice between the glasses with the mint mix. Add a straw and top up with soda water.
Vodka & cranberry blush
Peach sangria
Lay the lime slices on a tray and freeze for at least an hour. Put the remaining chopped limes (including the skin) in the bowl of a food processor or blender with the sugar and 100ml water. Whizz until really juicy and completely broken down. Pour the mix through a sieve, so that all the pulpy bits remain and you have lots of juice. Have a taste - if it's too sour, add a bit more sugar. This can be made 2 days ahead and chilled. Pour into a big jug with lots of ice and the lime slices, and top up with soda water. Serve with a shot of vodka or rum, if you like.
Pour the vodka and Cointreau into a jug, then add the cranberry juice and orange juice. Stir well. Pare strips of peel from 2-3 limes. Fill 12 glasses with the crushed ice, then pour over the cocktail. Finish each glass with a strip of lime peel.
Put the dry white wine, Cointreau, peach schnapps, golden caster sugar, cinnamon sticks, sliced limes and oranges into a large bowl, stir and chill. To serve, add the soda water and some ice and pour into jugs.

Los palacios Garden Group.
The Los Palacios Garden Group held it’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 17th of April, at Marianos Restaurant, Los Palacios. Some of the points to be discussed were the Registration as a “Neighbourhood Association” with
the title, Los Palacios Garden and Community Group. To this aim a new committee was formally elected. The meeting was well attended. Well I suppose we should get back to gardening. The two things you can grantee will happen in Spain, the sun will shine and the weeds will grow. As a gardening group we have the equipment, strimmers, back pack weed sprayers and weed killer, but there is a definite lack of people to use them. We are still looking for volunteers to form a weed eradication group .This will comprise of about ten people to concentrate on weeds only. They would be expected to put in only about 3 hours a month, not much to ask for to see the area looking neat and tidy. If you think you would like to help, contact me on: 646557887 or on our e-mail address: volunteers@lospalacios-gardeners.com. This really is a case of “Many hands make light work”. We seem to be mentioning the “Book
Shop” every Month, they are running a “ free “ yes free raffle, you buy two books and get one free, because you have three books you are entitled to a raffle ticket. The raffle is drawn on the last Friday of every month and is valid for one month, then the new ticket is drawn. I have been approached by people telling me that they are not physically able to help, or they don’t live here permanently, they can still help by making a small donation at the book shop on a Friday morning. We would like to thank the ex servicemen’s association for their generous donation of 50 euros, this is greatly appreciated. Our entertainment section are planning some very pleasant nights, we hope that the community will support them. For more information about the Los Palacios garden group, minutes, future projects, why not visit our web site: lospalacios-gardeners.com. Edward Roberts, Chairman.
May in the Spanish gardens Spring in the air and in the flowers What ever the type of garden you have it is likely to be colourful in May. Many types of bulbs have yet to finish their spring displays and summer lilies will start to flower by the end of the month. Many herbs enjoying dry garden conditions

are in flower including collections of salvias. Subtropical varieties such as bougainvilleas and hibiscus are flowering except in areas where they were caught by last winters severe frosts. Like wise lantanas are a mass of flowers in warm sheltered gardens but only just showing signs of leaves in shady places where they were caught by frosts. During the month dedicated rose gardens will start to look their best especially inland where the May displays in places like Madrid and Granada are exceptional and Cordoba with it’s patio festival in May sets the standards for other locations and gardens in terms of mass displays of geraniums and window boxes of petunias. But there are more things to do than just look at flowers as May is the last month for serious changes in the garden before the sun starts to get hot. Spend wisely on Spring plant purchases Inevitably everyone is tempted to make Spring purchases to fill gaps, to progress the planting of new gardens, to brighten up apartment balconies and terraces and also the windowsills of village houses. Local Yoga teacher Lisa has a studio in Isla Plana and has classes for all abilities. Meditation
What is Meditation? Many people think that the purpose of meditation is to de stress, to zone out and to get away from everything. Whilst there is some truth in this the real purpose of meditation is to actually tune in, not to get away from it, but to get in touch with it. Meditation is not just to de stress but to find a peace within. The peace that spiritual traditions talk about. We can define this peace as the space in between your thoughts. You have a thought here; a thought there and there is a little space between each thought. According to wisdom traditions, this space between the thought is the window or passage way to the infinite mind. The mystery that some go as far as to call the Spirit or God. We need not use those terms, but it is your core consciousness. The more we connect to this space the more we find certain truths about it. It is a space of never ending Creativity and Imagination. It is a space where we can connect with the great power of intention. Finding those wonderful qualities of your own free spirit. Where to Meditate Choose a quiet, safe place where you will not be disturbed. When to Meditate Morning and evening coincide with our body’s quieter rhythms. Our body knows how to be still, we just have to give it the opportunity. Studies show that routines started in the morning last the longest, but anytime you look forward to meditating is the right time. Body Position The most important is to be comfortable. It is preferable to sit up straight on the floor, with the legs crossed. Use a cushion under the bottom to allow the pelvis to rotate forward … so the spine may maintain its natural lumbar curve. The knees should be at the same height showing an equally balanced pelvis for the spine to lift

up from. Alternately sit upright in a chair. Both postures are to cultivate alertness. However if you are ill then laying down is fine. The mind has been conditioned to sleep when we lay down so you may feel sleepier. Your hands can relax in your lap, palms up. Thoughts Thoughts will eventually drift in and dance around in your mind, and that is normal. Do not do anything with them: let them be. If you find yourself drifting off with your thoughts, thinking about what is passing through your mind, just return to focusing your attention/ awareness on your breath or on the Mantra. You will soon slip into the space between your thoughts. Breath When we pay attention to the breath, we are in the present moment. In an unforced, natural rhythm, allow your breath to flow in and out through the nasal passages. Easily and effortlessly. Meditation Lengths The effects of meditation are cumulative and setting aside as little as 15 minutes a day to retreat and rejuvenate will be beneficial. Many schools of meditation suggest 30 minutes of meditation twice a day and as your meditation practice evolves you can extend your time. It is better to spend just a few minutes meditating everyday rather than meditating for an hour a week. What can happen during Meditation We can experience thoughts while repeating a Mantra or observing the breath. If this happens, place more awareness/attention on the Mantra or the breath. You may notice sensations in the body or you might hear sounds in your environment. Whenever you become conscious of that, just go back to observing the breath or repeating the Mantra with greater awareness or attention. We can also fall asleep. If you fall asleep, when you awaken and if time permits, allow yourself about five or ten minutes to complete your meditation.
and on each exhalation until you reach the number ten then start again. If you become distracted and can not remember what number you reached, be honest with yourself and start again. There is also the option of just counting on the in breath or just on the out breath. If you find that counting the breaths interferes with the mind’s quietness then simply watch or observe the natural flow of breath. Bringing your mind into the present moment and to that space in between the thoughts. Maybe to start with set an alarm, so as you are not wondering how much time has passed or how much is left to go! Another option may be to use a Mantra. A Mantra is a sound, syllable, word or group of words that is considered capable of “Creating spiritual transformation”. You could start by using the Mantra “I Am” which is just a statement of existence. When Moses went to the burning bush and asked God “What is your name?” God said “I am, that I am” When you repeat some sacred phrase like “That, I am”, the “I am” is the source of the word Amen or Om or Allah. Then, with any of these, what happens is the sacred word interferes with the thoughts, the thoughts interfere with the Mantra. Then once in a while they interfere with each other so much that you fall into the gap, the pure consciousness between the thoughts. If you choose to use the Mantra meditation, start by repeating the Mantra out loud, then to a whisper and then finally mentally. Make sure your lips do not move or your tongue.
That’s it! Sit comfortably, close the eyes and see what happens. lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es
Using all of the above information you are ready to begin your meditation practice. You may wish to light some incense (from Latin Incendere “to burn”). Incense is composed of aromatic biotic materials, which release fragrant smoke when burned. It is used to create a spiritual atmosphere. Start by counting the breaths. You may be familiar already with this technique as I mentioned it in a previous article in respect to relaxing mind and body. Your options are to count the breath on each inhalation

The first matches ever in the 3 years existing of the soccerschool would be played for children of 8 & 9 years old. The tournament was organized by the hacienda at Fuente Alamo. There were three games on the program. Respectively against Hacienda, UCAM & Los Garres. No one counted on winning anything because this was the first time that the children were playing games at all we were there just to take part. That is why it was a complete surprise that the first match ended in 4-4 . Suddenly the boys got the idea that they could win the trophy . The second match ended in a 8-0 defeat by a fantastic team. But the kids did not let that get them down and showed great spirit and won the third game with 4-2. This meant that there were penalties to be taken against the Hacienda. The winner was going to the semi - final. Thanks to the excellent saves from the goalkeeper Alvaro and well taken penalties by Jaime, George, Ryan, Jack & Alvaro was the semi final achieved.

Man drives around the world to win a bet Roy Locock drove 39,000 miles round the world in his MG Midget, surviving a Taliban attack, floods and an earthquake to win a bet with his neighbour. The 62-yearold grandad set off after he was told by pal Alan Lines "it can’t be done" and took 16 months to complete the 27-country odessy in a 1977 MG Midget. He completed the drive despite being caught up in an earthquake in Panama and a Taliban attack in Quetta, Pakistan. The retired radio engineer said: "I woke up one morning and the hotel was shaking. "There was mortar fire outside, followed by small arms fire. "The Taliban were firing on the army garrison next door. "But the only time I was really concerned for my safety was in the Northern Territories in Australia, when it suffered the worst floods in 30 years. "Over here, really bad floods are 6ft deep, but over there, they are 66ft. I was held up in Queensland for four weeks." Mr Lines, who was with other friends at the MG Club in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, for Mr Locock’s triumphant return, said: "It?s a fantastic achievement, and I?m delighted to be proven wrong. "To be honest, I thought he?d get half way round the world and give up." Mr Locok, from Chinnor, Oxfordshire, now hopes to drive the length of Africa but not in his MG

Midget - known affectionately as Bridget - which was retired from the road when he arrived home this week. Mr Locock fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he bought the second-hand black MG in 2006. He said: "It was a bit of an impulse purchase. I’d always wanted an MG for fun so I bought it and set about a major restoration job, re-vamping the engine,
taking me for a good night out. "So there I was - an old wrinkly - out on the tiles at all hours with these youngsters!" The adventurer is writing a book about his experiences before considering his next mission. He said: "I’m tempted to try crossing Africa from north to south in a different car, but haven’t decided yet. "We’ll have to see what the next thing is that I’m told I can’t possibly do!" Mr Locock, whose wife of 35 years, Bridie, passed away four years ago, added: "If I had suggested this globetrotting idea while she was alive she would have thought I was totally crazy. "And she’d have been right!"
Ford Mondeo now more than £2000 cheaper replacing the interior and re-painting it racing green." Recalling the day his globe-trotting adventure idea was born, Mr Locock said: "I was having a bad morning restoring the MG. I was under the car struggling with a bolt - things just weren’t going right. "Then Alan walked in all jolly and said, ‘What will you do when you’ve finished this then?’ "My reply - ‘Drive around the world’ - was only meant as a sarcastic kind of throw-away remark, but when he immediately said, ‘You can’t do that’, I thought, ‘Oh really?’ "Ten weeks later I was setting off!" One of the trip’s more amusing moments came as Mr Locock - whose MG numberplate reads SPY 122X - arrived at Turkey’s border control. He said: "A smartly dressed customs official looking very stern walked up to me, leant down to the window. "I thought maybe I was in trouble, then a smirk emerged on his face and he said, ‘Mr Bond? James Bond?’" Mr Locock, who has two grown-up children and two grandchildren, said he was surprised by which country he found the most welcoming. "The general media portrayal meant I was very wary of going to Iran," he said, "but actually they are the most beautiful, lovely people you could wish to meet. "They hadn’t seen a car like it and would gather round in awe. "I met four students who insisted on

The updated Ford Mondeo is cheaper to own, thanks to new models and engine tweaks. An all-new Ford Mondeo is due next year, but Ford has made a range of changes to the current Mondeo line-up to keep it competitive against newer rivals. A new entry-level Graphite model costs £15,995 – £2105 less than the previous cheapest model. New Titanium X Business Edition models replace outgoing Titanium X versions and cost £1500 less. Prices start at £21,995 and standard equipment includes dualzone climate control, Windsor leather trim and satnav. Tweaks to the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine have made it more efficient. The cleanest versions now emit just 119g/ km of CO2 (a reduction of up to 10g/km) thanks to calibration and aerodynamic changes; EU Combined fuel economy is boosted from 57.6mpg to 61.4mpg. The updated Ford Mondeo is on sale now. Ford has also announced details of a new turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol Ecoboost

engine that will make its debut in the allnew Mondeo. The new 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine joins a range of turbocharged engines that includes 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.6litre four-cylinder units. The new engine features direct fuel injection and variable valve timing; it will be built at Ford’s factory in Craiova, Romania. The new Mondeo is closely related to the US Ford Fusion and is due to be launched in Europe in spring 2014. Ford initially planned to launch the European car in early 2013, but production and quality issues have caused a number of setbacks.

Property, Financial and Legal YOU BUYING IN SPAIN ??? So many people plan for a long time to buy their dream home in Spain – in a sense they think of it as the “promised land” but is it that? Property values are so attractive in this region in comparison with others in Spain – but could there be problems lurking in the background which will shatter our bubble of dreams?? The process of buying a house in Spain is fundamentally quite different to the process in the UK. In Spain, it is possible to buy without obtaining detailed legal advice and some buyers unfortunately end up in the Notary’s office to sign documents and then discovering that there are serious issues with their “dream house” they are anxious to purchase. On the other hand, in the UK it is not possible to purchase without both the Seller and the Buyer being individually represented by Solicitors. In addition, the conveyancing procedure is governed by the Law Society Regulations, under which a contract is signed which is legally binding and enforceable by either party. There is also the added fact that there is one Land Registry which governs the whole of England & Wales. My friend “Prudence” says that anyone
buying a property here in Spain should have access to as much information as possible about the property ie. the legal title for a start, plus if necessary and other information regarding the liabilities of the property and, in fact, any issues which will affect the buyer once they have taken over ownership. As part of my services, I carry out such investigations to appraise the buyer before steps are then taken to legally formalise the transaction. In some cases it is beneficial for a meeting with the client before the Notary, before that all important document the Escritura is signed on the day of completion. We are all familiar with the word “tax” in Spain and in a property transaction there are a few taxes to be considered ie IBI (Council tax), plus valia tax on the sale of a property, Stamp Duty, non residents tax or fiscal residency as appropriate – if it moves, its taxed - you can be sure of that! So, if your on the walkabout or driveabout looking for a new abode and want to take the next step, give me a call if you would like me to embark upon my investigations to find out all the information you need to be aware of and to assist you with your chosen property, right from the outset to completion of the land registry formalities.

Energy Efficiency Certificates
Over ten years ago it was passed in to European law that all new properties, properties for sale built prior to 2007 and long term rental properties (over 4 months) should have a certificate that showed the energy efficiency of the property. This certificate was not only intended to give the potential buyer or tenant an idea of future energy costs but also to encourage builders and owners to build or improve on energy burning efficiency and so achieve an environmental impact worldwide. In the UK the rules appertaining to this European legislation were implemented in 2007 and Energy Saving Certificates

can be found in all Property Information Packs and advertising for all for sale and rental properties. In Spain the legislation was recently passed through Royal Decree and Energy Efficiency Certificates have to available on properties for sale or long term rental by the 1st June 2013. From this date it will be impossible to even advertise a property for long term rental or a property for sale let alone complete on the sale of a property without this certification. This leaves very little time for the affiliated engineers to get around to properties, carryout their inspections, write reports and then provide certificates for the many thousands of villas, apartments etc.. which fall in to these categories. On top of this all properties with certificates have to be registered at a special department within Regional Government. The costs involved in obtaining a certificate have been of concern to many.
In the UK a certificate can be obtained for approximately GBP60. In Spain the costs have varied from â‚Ź250 plus IVA for a villa up to 100 sqm to â‚Ź350 plus IVA for larger properties. It is difficult to get a straight answer of whether this is down to government setting charges for use of the special software programme used by the engineers to complete these reports or the companies involved taking advantage of a supply and demand shortage and inflating prices to take advantage of the situation. The management of Sensol Golf Villa Rentals & Sensol Golf Villas Sales had been aware of the impending introduction of this certificate for some time and have been involved in negotiations with several Spanish companies and engineers to provide a value for money solution to the problem. They are pleased to announce that they have been able to agree a greatly reduced rate for their own clients and are happy to pass this saving on to others who are either selling or renting their properties. In a weakening economy, finding a cheap, efficient way to transfer your money abroad can literally save you thousands of pounds As sterling continues to weaken, those who own property in Spain or who are looking to buy a property should tread
Property, Financial and Legal carefully when transferring money abroad to avoid poor exchange rates and unnecessary transfer fees. Peter Loveday Head of Global Sales at Currencies Direct, advises prospective or current property owners across the Euro zone to become more savvy when considering foreign exchange and international payments. On average, someone wanting to buy €100,000 will lose out by £1,221 when opting to transfer money with a high street bank rather than a specialist foreign exchange broker. What’s more, this figure does not include further transfer fees charged by high street banks. Specialist foreign exchange companies bulk buy Euros, allowing them to offer much more competitive exchange rates without levying transfer fees. Also, unlike most high street banks, they can fix an exchange rate for up to two years. A forward contract is an increasingly popular option for people investing overseas or making multiple international payments over a significant period of
time. By locking in a rate with a deposit of around 10%, a forward contract protects you against unfavourable market fluctuations. It also ensures that you know in advance the exact cost of every payment to be made. Furthermore you do not need to part with 90% of your funds until your payment is due. The high street banks, therefore, should not be the first port of call for anyone making an international money transfer or anyone that has a requirement to transfer a large sum of money to a foreign bank account. The banks not only have limited service offerings compared to a specialist, but a significant chunk of your cash is likely to be lost through uncompetitive exchange rates as well. Banks do not have access to ‘wholesale’ exchange rates and can’t compete with specialists. Furthermore customers not only have to contend with all the usual inconvenience of dealing with a bank but also transfer fees, which have increased in recent times despite the fact that international transfers represent no real cost to the banks.
Foreign exchange doesn’t have to be difficult and it doesn’t have to be costly. For those that need to make international transfers it pays to shop around and look at the services offered by foreign exchange specialists. Also, booking a forward contract should be a definite consideration if you want to take the gamble out of currency market fluctuations affecting the cost of your investment. You might be pleasantly surprised – literally saving thousands on exchange rates and hundreds on transfer fees. If you want to find out more about how a forward contract could save you money on your international payments, talk to Currencies Direct Mojacar office on +34 950 478 914, or email Andrew Brown Regional Sales Manager directly at andrew.b@currenciesdirect.com

PALS EVENTS 2013 Another busy month for us here at Andrea’s Animal Rescue, as usual! Heidi has not received her treatment yet; apparently the lab has been on a go-slow due to Easter... Hopefully it will be here by next week so we’ll let you know how it goes next month. She is doing well with the eye drops, and is looking so much better after her beauty session. She is turning into a real beauty xxx The auction to help pay for her treatment raised a whopping €763, which is enough to cover the injections and also to get her sterilised when she is well enough to have that done. Thank you to everyone who supported us, especially item donors and winning bidders!! We had a VERY big surprise this month when Truffle, one of our lady pot-belly pigs, produced 4 more pot-belly pigs!! We didn’t even know she was pregnant!! But we know who the father is - definitely that cheeky monkey Linford! Hopefully that will be his last bit of fun as he is now castrated We also gained a new member for our growing pig family, the lovely Peppa. She is such a babe! We think that Toby and the nameless pup have both found their forever homes; both home checks are underway so finger's crossed all goes well. The picture here shows 'daddy' Kevin cuddling both Toby and 'nameless'; such a sweet trio! One of our most fervent supporters, Angela Smith, has created some wonderful knitted dog hats & coats to sell in aid of the charity; what a wonderful bunch of people we have in our group. If anyone is looking for that special present for your faithful friend, her creations can be found on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pages/AndreasAnimal-Rescue-The-Henrietta-Foundation Two more puppies have come in, picked up at the builder's merchant!! Funny what you can get there these days! They are brothers, we think, around 4 months old, and are possibly Mastin crosses - they will definitely be big dogs when fully grown!! They have been named Yin and Yang. One of them (Yang, the mottled-colour one) has already been reserved for UK, but we are looking for a home for Yin. For more info on these 2 beauties please contact Andrea on 690906565.

Will You Live to see 85? Here’s something to think about. I recently picked a new G.P. doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age. (yeh I just reached 63). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 85?’ He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor? ‘Oh not much grog these days and don’t smoke’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’ Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks, fatty roasts and barbecued Ribs? ‘I said, ‘Not much.... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’ ‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, surfing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said. He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said... He looked at me and said,.. ‘Then, why the !@$% do you want to live to 85? Martin Sallu Plastics
My wife went to Spain for two weeks for a company training session. I drove her to the airport, we hugged and she said, "Honey, is there anything you’d like me to bring back for you?" I replied, "Yes, a Spanish girl!" My wife didn’t reply and headed off to catch her plane. Two weeks later we met back at the airport. "How was the trip?" I asked. She said, "Splendid thank you." I said, "Where is my present?" "What present?" she hesitated. "The Spanish girl." I chuckled. "Oh," she laughed, "I did what I could, now we have to wait 9 months to see if it’s a girl."
Doctor! doctor! I think I need glasses, I think you do mate this is a fish & chip shop! Doctor, Doctor I think I’m a bell? Take these and if it doesn’t help give me a ring! Doctor, Doctor I think I’m suffering from Deja Vu! Didn’t I see you yesterday? Doctor, Doctor I’ve got wind! Can you give me something? Yes - here’s a kite!
