Welcome the May edition of The Journal! This month we have another fantastic magazine in store for you! Let’s start by mentioning last month’s edition of the magazine where we always print some April Fools stories. There were a few tall tales in there and we had lots of emails from our readers guessing which stories were true or not. Most of you guessed correctly. The stories about the Seaplanes on the Mar Menor, the machine that turned Water into Wine, and the Back to the Future Hoverboard were all April fools! This month everything that you read is completely true- even the story about the woman who fell down an abandoned well while in the throes of passion! Finally the warm weather has arrived and we hope that you enjoyed a fantastic Easter on the beach or by the pool. It was nice to see the bars, restaurants and shops so busy. Local businesses are reporting a significant increase in trade year on year so this has to be good news for everyone. On the subject of local businesses doing well, Camposol Health Clinic is now expanding and they are welcoming the arrival of 2 new doctors and a surgeon. Soon they will be able to carry out a whole host of out-patient surgical procedures in the new operating theatre that is currently under construction at their premises. The bars and restaurants are all ready for the summer. Oscar´s Bar on Camposol officially re-opened and is looking great after its refurbishment, The Black Bull has had a HUGE HD projector installed and La Vida in El Pareton is now under new ownership. You will find all the information further on in the magazine. We would like to say well done to Mrs Jennifer Martin of Camposol who was the lucky winner of our 42inch LED TV competition! Thank you to everyone who entered and keep your eyes open for future competitions. Repsol Finds Liquid Gold In The Canaries Repsol Oil Company thinks the waters of the Canary Islands hide the largest oil reserves in the country. But against them are those who fear an ecological disaster and the end of tourism on the islands.

Reports say the Canary Island residents are divided on the matter, and the restarting of crude extraction of the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is only supported by Repsol and the Partido Popular, and detractors are the other political parties, the ecologists and the NIMBY which stands for “Not In My Back Yard, as well as all who live from tourism. But the promise of industrial prosperity in an area with 33% unemployment is balanced by the warnings that the possible pollution would dissuade the 12 million visitors, which are practically the only income on the archipelago.

Mariano Rajoy doesn’t want a “Poor” Catalonia Mariano Rajoy told lawmakers that he does not want to see a “poor” independent Catalonia “outside of the EU and UN,” while reiterating that he would not allow the north eastern region to hold its proposed November 9th referendum.

“Neither you nor I can break the law because what you propose is actually a decision that belongs to all Spaniards,” the PM told Alfred Bosch, parliamentary spokesman for the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), during a question-andanswer session in Congress. “I want all of us to go on forming part of this same nation like we have for centuries. We have shared the same history, the same fortunes, and we have mixed our blood and joined our families. We have made a transition to democracy. I don’t want to see a poor Catalonia, or a Catalonia outside the EU or euro zone or the United Nations. No one deserves this and neither do you.” Congress has brought forward the debate on the Catalonia parliament’s petition to transfer enabling powers to regional lawmakers that would allow them to hold the status vote. After Rajoy reaffirmed that the decision over Catalonia’s future should be made by all Spaniards, not just Catalans, Bosch responded during his intervention: “Well, why don’t you call a referendum for all Spaniards”? “Do it, because that is your duty,” the ERC leader demanded. “On November 9, we are going to the polls, because casting ballots isn’t illegal and we plan on voting.” Tensions between the central and regional governments have been growing since January when the Catalan parliament voted in favour of a motion to ask Spanish Congress for permission to hold a referendum on self-rule for the region.

statements, I realize that we probably over stressed our disdain for this press coverage, which one could call the ‘momentum catastrophicum literature’.” These were the words spoken by the executive director for Spain, Ramón Guzmán, when he spoke at the May 16, 2007 meeting of the International Monetary Fund executive board, which was being held to analyze the Spanish economy. Economic activity in Spain at the time was being buoyed by the boom in the housing market, while consumer spending had peaked. As such, the IMF was greatly concerned about the chance of the bubble bursting, and a subsequent crisis. The initial statements from the rest of the executive directors drew attention to the notable differences there were between the vision of the analysts who had been examining the Spanish economy, and the vision of the authorities in the country regarding the risks of the economic situation. Spanish economy began to slow in 2007, as property prices began to fall. That was in spite of growth of 3.9 percent that same year. Guzmán argued that Spain was not suffering the effects of a real estate bust. Instead, the government of Socialist politician José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was arguing that there was going to be a “soft landing.” The executive director also defended the reformist spirit of Spain in the face of criticism on the part of the IMF analysts. “Contrary to what a hurried reader of the staff report might infer, the authorities consider that very good progress has been made over the years to put Spain among the top reformers in Europe,” Guzmán said, according to the meeting minutes. However, he did stress that productivity needed to be improved and he promised that there would be “no risk of complacency in the future.” At the meeting, the other directors warned of the chance of greater adjustment than had been forecast, as well as the need to recover competitiveness compared to the rest of the euro zone, and a “possible correction in high real estate valuations.” Indeed, figures from the Public Works Ministry were starting to show signs that the model for growth was losing its impetus: of the nearly 665,000 new housing builds in 2006, in 2007 there

were 530,000. And in 2008, when the economic crisis really kicked in, there were fewer than 238,000. The number two at the European department of the IMF, Alessandro Leipold, warned that the analysts, as well as the Organization for Cooperation and Development and the Bank of Spain, all agreed that there was an “overvaluation of between 20 and 30 percent” in the real estate market. However, Guzmán argued that the rising prices of recent years were not due to speculative reasons, citing a rise in demand due to an increased number of new arrivals from abroad, as well as the “deconstruction” of the traditional family unit. He also mentioned falls in interest rates and the appetite of investors from other European countries, among others. But the subsequent collapse in the construction sector explains why, in the next IMF meeting, which took place in March 2009, this “possible correction” was transformed into a calculation that saw a fall in real estate prices of 30 percent – a figure that is in line with current calculations.

Pegasus Helicopters Patrolling The Skies

A ‘Speed camera’ helicopter that flew above Spain’s roads over Easter week has already caught several drivers on film chatting on WhatsApp or using their Tablets at the wheel. Footage was caught of one driver who navigates on his Tablet with his left hand whilst steering with his right, and on several occasions used both hands for surfing the web. In total, he spent 36 seconds on his Tablet and 23 seconds with no hands on the steering wheel. Another clip showed a driver reading a book at the wheel for 10 seconds, after which the car suddenly swerves to the right. The Pegasus helicopters, of which there are six flying at an altitude of 1,000 feet (330 metres) – high enough that they cannot be seen by drivers – have also caught other motorists committing offences. These include a driver reversing down a motorway hard shoulder after missing his exit, and a car and a motorcycle overtaking another bike two abreast. This was after just one day of the helicopters being on ‘sky patrol’, and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) uploaded the footage and made it public to ‘raise awareness’ among road users of dangerous practices.

Good News For Spanish Olive Oil Exports

Global olive oil output may be smaller than previously expected amid reduced supplies from Greece to Tunisia, allowing top producer Spain to increase its share of export markets, Oil World said. World production of olive oil will be 3.27 million metric tons in the 2013-14 season that ends in September, about 50,000 tons below the previous estimate,

the Hamburg-based researcher said in an e-mail report. Output will still be 26 percent larger than the previous season, when dry weather hurt crops in Spain, and will exceed global consumption of 3.17 million tons, according to the report. “This season’s Spanish production is steeply above last season’s disastrously low level,” Oil World said. “Spain is increasing its export share on the global market this season, taking advantage of the reduced production and export supplies of other olive oil producers, primarily Tunisia, Greece and Turkey.” Spanish production of pressed olive oil will be a record 1.595 million tons in 2013-14, more than double the previous year, Oil World said. The country’s exports this season to Italy reached 190,000 tons through February, versus 88,000 tons for same period a year earlier, it said.

“Italian consumers have become increasingly dependent on Spanish supplies to satisfy their rising import requirements,” Oil World said. Prices of virgin olive oil traded on the MFAO Olive Oil Exchange in Jaen, Spain, fell 35 percent in the past year while soybean oil dropped 19 percent on the Chicago Board of Trade. Agricultural prices have declined globally from last year amid rising output of everything from soybeans to sunflowers. Extra virgin olive oil prices in Spain declined to a 19-month low of $2,725 a ton last week, almost 30 percent below a year earlier, according to Oil World. Italy’s pressed olive oil output may be “below average” in 2013-14 at 450,000 tons, up from 415,500 tons the previous year, while less than supplies that topped 500,000 tons in the prior three seasons, Oil World said. Production in Greece may fall to 157,500 tons from 357,900 tons. Tunisia’s output tumbled 64 percent from the prior season to 80,000 tons while Turkey’s supply fell 33 percent to 130,000 tons, according to the report.

Cop Unwittingly Pays 90€ For Watch At Airport

A British police officer has returned from a holiday in Spain to find he unwittingly bought a €90 watch in Alicante airport’s duty-free shop. The officer, from Doncaster, purchased several items but not the Swatch watch. He only realised when he looked at the receipt upon arriving home. “I did not look at any Swatch watches, never mind putting one through the check-out, so I was shocked and surprised to see one detailed on my till

receipt,” he said. The man, who has served in the police force for 18 years, immediately phoned Barclaycard and was assured the matter would be dealt with. However, he then received a letter explaining that the airport had reviewed the case and decided the watch had been legitimately purchased. A Barclaycard spokesman said: “It appeared that the goods had been supplied at the point of sale and the transaction was chip and pin verified. The responsibility at this point does fall to the customer to check their bill and the goods received at point of sale.” There have been cases across southern Spain of shops adding an item to a customer’s bill to cover up a previous theft. However, there is no evidence to suggest this incident was a deliberate scam.

Lovemaking lands woman at bottom of well Firefighters were called to rescue a halfnaked, 21-year-old woman on who was suffering from shock and hypothermia

after falling into a 15-metre deep waterwheel well shaft while having sex. She plunged 10 metres into the hole near ‘Playa Park’ – a place popular with local youths as a venue for romantic liaisons and ‘botellón’ outdoor drinking parties – before hitting the water. It is believed that the couple had inadvertently loosened the boards covering the well while making love and had been too distracted to notice the impending peril. The young man did not, unfortunately, respond in a manner likely to inspire writers of romantic songs and novels, by fleeing the scene and later raising the

alarm by calling 112. When firefighters rescued the woman she was found to be soaking wet and wearing no underwear. She was taken at midnight to Ciudad Real general hospital to be treated for symptoms of hypothermia before being discharged the following morning. Firefighters issued a public statement on Friday asking young people in the area to take care while partying as there are a number of covered waterwheel shafts in the area similar to the one used for the hapless couple’s doomed tryst.

A tragic Story about Rita Lenssons

I have spoken to several people and I hear the same thing about Rita “She is a very sweet kind lady who has helped so many people”. Many of her friends say how they admire her patience and her energy for her charity work plus her love for cats and Spain. However she always had and made time to help any body who needed support in any way she could. I met this lady of 60 plus years myself and I can fully recognise the above tribute to her. She has worked with the Pulpi Council in a special project where she caught ferral cats in connection with San Animal Charity and drove them to Sorbas to a vet’s where they were neutered, then she drove them back and when they well enough, returned them to the area they were found. It was in this work last July she was informed of a cat that needed to be caught and taken to the vets, she did no more than go off to catch the cat. This one day I dearly wish she had not gone because she was too busy doing something else or her phone was out of charge. Fate this day was against her, while trying to catch the cat she had a dreadful accident – She Fell, landed very badly and could not move and laid there for over an hour before being found. The emergency services were called and they made her as comfortable as possible but the medics would not move her without more professional help. They waited for another hour or so for an air ambulance to air lift her to Huercal Overa Hospital and then again to Almeria Hospital. All the doctors and every one involved did every thing they could for Rita. This tragic story get’s worse, Rita has lost the use of all her limbs and needs 24 hour care every day for the rest of her life, as there has been so much spinal nerve damage. At the moment Rita is still in hospital in Belgium where she has had operations to try to get some movement in her hands to be able to hold a small book, which we are waiting to hear if it has been successful. Rita needs lots of various specialist equipment, such as a bed, wheelchair, hoists, a car big enough for adaptation for the wheelchair and many medical aids as well. Her villa may have to be sold or altered for movement of care and wheelchair access. Rita also worked with The Helping Hands Charity as their Treasurer. This charity not only helps animals but humans as well. At this time they are organising events to raise money and a big event September. There will be

press releases next month when dates etc. are confirmed. These events are going to be called “Help For Rita” so please keep your eyes open for them as we need your support in attending these events. Businesses. Can you donate any raffle prizes for these events? If anyone is running a social event maybe one of your raffle collections could be donated to Rita, or just take the hat round, every cent is going to count. Furniture Plus are already taking cash donations in their shop at Puerto de Mazarrón. Many of you know that for many years when they deliver they will take your old furniture away for free and donate it to two charities, Go Mad and Helping Hands. Now they are transporting nearly all this furniture to the Helping Hands Charity Shop in Aguilas to raise money for Rita. There are lots of us gathering together from all walks of life with different talents to give support and aid Rita in many different ways. We need your help to make Rita’s last dream come true, to return to where her heart is, her home in Spain, her cats and her friends. This lady has given so much of her life to her friends and charities and now needs all of us to give something back and help her.

Green Light Given to 20 New Traffic and Road Regulations The Spanish Congress passed the Traffic Law reform, and with it 20 new regulations. Some will come into force a month and one day after they are published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE), and the rest will become the law in June. Below is a summary of the main changes: There will be a new speed limit of up to 130km/hr on certain stretches of the motorway, and a reduction of 10km/hr on secondary roads. Speed radar detectors will be banned. Anyone caught using them will be fined 200 euro and have 3 points taken off their licence. As for radar jammers, or inhibitors, their use is considered much more serious and brings a fine of 6,000 euro and the loss of 6 points. Instead of being judged by weight and age, the new regulation states that children under the height of 1m 35cm must not travel in the front seat next to the driver. The exception would be if shorter children than the one in the front occupied all of the seats in the back of the car, or the car doesn’t have seats in the back. Failure to comply with this law will incur a 200 euro fine and the vehicle can be immobilised. The fine for drink driving remains at 500 Euros. However, offenders caught twice over the limit or more or re-offenders caught in twice in one year will have to pay a fine of 1,000 euro. It will now be illegal to drive with illegal substances (drugs) in your body. A 1,000

euro fine will be given to those who take a saliva test which subsequently shows positive for drugs in the system. Traces of drugs usually remain in the body for a few days, so even if offenders didn’t take them on the day of driving, they could face a hefty fine if caught. Carrying out road works will be considered a serious offence if prior notice is not given to the authorities that deal with traffic. Up until now, drivers with foreign cars only had to comply with tax regulations. Now, all foreign cars must register their cars in Spain – so that it is easier to sanction them. Traffic police officers will be able to hand out sanctions without stopping the driver’s car if he is unable to chase them and stop them. Whether traffics laws have been complied with or not, anyone that runs over a hunting animal will be responsible for the damages on the car. The time given to pay a traffic fine with a discount of 50% or to appeal will increase from 15 to 20 days. Tow trucks that

act in an emergency to offer help will be given priority and will be treated as an emergency service. Cancer sufferers will have fewer restrictions placed on them for driving. Currently, cancer patients are allowed to drive in very few instances. Due to medical improvements, this law will change. Modern-day Spain is a country changing at bewildering speed. In less than half a century, a predominantly rural society has been transformed into a mainly urban one. A dictatorship has become a democracy. A once-repressed society is being spoken of as a future ‘Sweden of the Mediterranean.’ John Hooper’s outstanding portrayal of the new Spanish society explores the causes behind these changes, from crime to education, gambling to changing sexual mores. This new, up-to-date edition is the essential guide to understanding twentyfirst-century Spain: a land of paradox, progress, and social change. The New Spaniards is a book which has sat on my to-read shelf for far too long. The second edition of this book got released in 2006, so by the time I pulled it from my shelf, I wondered if its information would be little irrelevant, given the changes to Spain in the past eight years. I could not have been more wrong. So often mentioned in the same breath as Ghosts of Spain by Giles Tremlett, the book which pulled me from my slumber about Spanish history, The New Spaniards is a must read. The author brings together over 400 pages, creating a solid, credible and easy to read review of Franco and modern life. One chapter in, what immediately becomes clear is the efficient and clean writing style Hopper has; while other books on the subject can feel academic and stiff, the prose is fresh and makes the reader comfortable among a detailed and insightful presentation. COALITION GOVERNMENT: THE WAY FORWARD FOR CAMPOSOL.

Some members of our local community have often commented on how difficult life is for small parties on Mazarron Council currently involved in the coalition government at the Town Hall. Such opinion has been expressed in articles in both The Journal and the other printed media. Furthermore, I have seen such views expressed on the CRA Forum and this has been said personally to me. I am of the view that such opinion is a little politically naive and indeed factually incorrect. The following article will attempt to explain why this is the case. Readers will be aware that after the last General Election in the UK no one party emerged with an overall majority. Thus, the Liberal Democrats, by far the smallest of the major parties in Parliament found themselves in the position of being “power brokers” so to speak. As such, the major party the Liberal Democrats decided to support would form the National Government. As we know they decided to back the Conservatives and David Cameron became the Prime Minister. The question we need to ask is, what gains did the Lib-Dems achieve through their actions? The answer is, a great deal actually. For example, Nick Clegg became Deputy - Prime Minster, Danny Alexander became number two at the Treasury second only to George Osborne and Vince Cable became Minister for Business. Furthermore, the Lib-Dems gained a number of junior governmental posts due to the prevailing

coalition arrangements. None of this would have been possible if either Labour or the Conservatives has gained an absolute majority in the House of Commons. In other words, the Lib-Dems although a relatively small party, found themselves in government with considerable power and influence because OF of the coalition government and not DESPITE it. We can discuss the merits or otherwise of a coalition government but that is not the point here. The salient point is, small parties increase their influence in coalition conditions. When I was elected to Hounslow Council in 2006 we faced exactly the same situation. After those local elections no single party had an absolute majority so all sorts of deals had to be done with smaller parties in order for us to form an administration. The same political observation can be applied here in Mazarron. After the last local elections in 2011 no single party achieved overall control of the Council. This meant deals had to be done Accordingly, the UIDM, a small party, entered the coalition at the Town Hall and one of its members, Giles Campillo, became Mayor of Mazarron. This would not have been possible if either PP or PSOE had gained enough seats for an overall majority.

Campillo, the Mayor, has recently announced expenditure of 18,000 euros for a photograph of Mazarron, 500,000 euros for a new museum and 100,000 euros for a new swimming pool roof. Does such expenditure really helps us living in the dark on Camposol? Obviously not! Indeed Town Hall spending on Camposol is utterly minimal although we contribute massively to the local economy through our spending and many of us pay the full IBI tax. What we get Making Life Easier in return is pathetic and it is this which needs changing if Camposol is to thrive. Campillo Medical is able to announce such expenditure mentioned earlier because he and his Pet party are able to Travel “punch above their weight” given the prevailing conditions at the Town Hall.

The fact that smaller parties can have considerable influence on the decision-making process at the Town Hall can be illustrated by considering the opposite scenario. This was clearly shown during the Blaya-

Blaya administration when the PP had an overall majority at the Town Hall and he became the Mayor. The consequences for Camposol were dire as this was a period of great stagnation and deterioration here. Speaking to BlayaBlaya was really like “ banging your head against a brick wall.” I can say that with some validity as I took part in such discussions with Blaya-Blaya as a then member of the CRA Committee. Frankly although we were promised a great deal we got nowhere. I soon became of the opinion that only a Camposol based party would fully address the problems associated with our urbanisation. As such, it is my submission that it would be detrimental to Camposol and the local area if an established Spanish party such as the PP, PSOE or the UIDM gained an overall majority of seats at the Town Hall at the May 2015 local elections. This is why a group of us here have been working for a considerable time to create a Camposol and District Independent Party ( CDiP). All the relevant papers to create the CDiP have gone through the requisite legal procedures and we are currently awaiting final approval for the new party from the Ministry of the Interior in Madrid. Very soon we hope to announce the fact that the CDiP exists as a party in its own right. Once this occurs we will be selecting and putting forward our own candidates at the next local elections. We have set ourselves a target of getting four Councillors elected which is certainly achievable here if the local electorate exercise their right to vote. The evidence shows that the history of Mazarron Council is normally one of coalition government. In recent years only once has there been a majority government at the Town Hall and that proved totally unsatisfactory for Camposol It is highly likely after the next local elections no one party will have an overall majority. In that scenario a party such as the CDiP could offer support to a larger party who wished to form an administration only if it promised to bring Camposol up to the required standard. Conversely the support of the CDiP would be withdrawn if such promises were not kept. This is how a small party could bring its influence to bear for the benefit of Camposol. Thus the view that minority parties have problems and difficulties in a coalition is in all candour far from reality. The evidence shows they do much better and have more influence in such conditions. The CDiP would prosper if a coalition emerged at the Town Hall after May 2015 and Camposol would be better off for it. Dr Peter Pitt Chairman CDiP Working Party.

Technology 3D Printed Body Parts If Vincent Van Gogh were alive today, doctors could have replaced his ear like new, thanks to recent mind-blowing breakthroughs in 3-D bioprinting.

The world’s first 3-D printer debuted back in 1983. In the three decades since, 3-D printers have churned out everything from holiday ornaments to electric cars to chocolate bars and beyond. But perhaps their most important contributions so far are the kind humans can benefit from the most -- living replacement body parts manufactured on-demand from a blend of real, live cells and synthetics. Here’s an eye-opening roundup of body parts already being 3-D printed throughout the U.S. 1. Skin: Regenerative burn tech that’s more than skin deep. What if real skin cells were printer jet “ink”? It sounds impossible, but they already are. Scientists at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, have custom built a 3-D bio-printer that actually prints human skin cells directly on burn wounds. First, the machine uses a scanner to scan, assess and map the patient’s burn wound size and depth. Next, data “guides the printer as it applies layers of the correct type of cells to cover the wound,” according to the researchers. To create skin, one of the printer’s inkjet valves emits the enzyme thrombin while another emits cells blended with fibrinogen, the body’s principal protein in blood clotting, as well as collagen, the body’s main structural connective tissue protein. After the printer applies these, it finishes the

process by printing a layer of human fibroblasts and, finally, a layer of skin cells known as keratinocytes. A smaller, portable version of the skin printer is in the works for use in war- and natural disastertorn areas. 2. Ears: Rat tails and cow parts -- the stuff that 3-D printed ears

are made of. Bioengineers and doctors at Cornell University’s Weill Cornell Medical College have 3-D printed an artificial ear that looks and feels real using a freaky mix of ingredients from some interesting sources, including rat tail bone collagen and cow ear cartilage. The soft, flexible bioengineered ear, which its makers say is “practically identical to a human ear,” gives hope to thousands of children born each year with microtia, a congenital ear deformity. People who have lost part of their external ear from cancer or from an accident could also benefit from the replacement ear. 3. Bones: 3-D bio-printers can help mend them. Yes, an inkjet printer can pump out bones that look, feel, and act

real. Researchers at Washington State University used a 3-D bio-printer to print out a bonelike material that could one day help treat dental problems, complex bone fractures and bone disorders like osteoporosis. The printed substance, which was successfully tested on rabbits and rats, serves as a support scaffolding for new human bone cells to form on. It conveniently dissolves once bone regeneration is complete. Doctors might eventually use this technology to print bone grafts on demand right from their exam rooms.

Bioluminescent Trees To Replace Streetlights

The future of art and design is awash with spectacular innovation. From giant vacuum cleaning systems aimed at eradicating smog to “smart” apparel that becomes translucent when the

wearer is aroused, the Dutch artist/designer/architect Daan Roosegaarde has helped imagine some hair-raising projects that could propel us into a new era of aesthetics. His newest endeavor -- a plan to replace light fixtures with bioluminescent plants -- is no letdown in comparison. Taking a cue from biomimicry, Roosegaarde is hoping to transform your average street-side trees into beacons of light for passersby. Like the luminescent abilities of jellyfish, mushrooms or fireflies, Roosegaarde, scientist Alexander Krichevsky and the State University of New York are all on the case, splicing DNA from luminescent marine bacteria with the chloroplast of a houseplant. The smaller-scale, glow-in-thedark specimens would act as the basis for a project of greater proportions -- light-emitting

installations that look like trees. “What happens when technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of the things that we wear and the roads that we drive on?” Roosegaarde muses in the video above. Microsoft To Offer Free Windows Microsoft took an enormous step forward this morning. It unveiled a free version of its Windows operating system. Revealed at the company’s annual software developer conference in San Francisco, this new OS is called Windows for Internet of Things, and Microsoft will license it for free when hardware makers use the software on devices with screens smaller than nine inches. The door is still open for the company to charge Windows licensing fees for PCs, tablets, and other larger devices, but Microsoft will compete head-on with Android — Google’s free mobile operating system — on smartphones and wearables. It’s a big, bold move, but it’s one that Microsoft needed to make. Because the code behind Android is open source, anyone can use it without paying a penny, and that has made life difficult for Microsoft in recent years, as the company continued to charge manufacturers about 10€ for its Windows Phone operating system on each smartphone and tablet. In a world where Apple is also pushing operating system prices towards zero, Microsoft must forgo its licensing fees just

to get Windows onto a more substantial number of devices. It’s a big, bold move, but it’s one that Microsoft needed to make. Presumably, Windows for Internet of Things will use the same code base as Windows Phone 8, and Microsoft says it will only run mobile apps, not desktop software. But today, the company also announced a new system for building applications that can run on both Windows and Windows Phone as well as XBoxes. So there could be ways of bridging that gap. It’s not clear whether home users and independent developers — and not just commercial hardware makers — will be able to download and install the new operating system on their own devices. There was no talk about open sourcing the Windows code base, a la Android. That means serious hackers can’t get into the guts of the operating system — and ensure the code is sound and secure — and it probably means that this new version of Windows won’t spread nearly as far or as fast as Android. But the move does show that Microsoft is serious about competing in the mobile market, and that the company is slowly shifting its business strategy, so that it relies more on revenue from cloud services instead of OS licensing. In other words, it’s transforming itself into a company that operates more like Google. The transition won’t be easy. Windows has always been a cash cow for Microsoft. It makes sense for the company to keep some of that revenue for now, especially on the desktop, where it faces less competition. But the cloud is where the industry is headed. Everything from Apple consumer service iCloud to IBM’s enterprise cloud services like SoftLayer is pointing in that direction. For its part, Microsoft now has a number of cloud services services that can lead the way into the future, ranging from Skype and OneDrive for consumers and professionals, to enterprise services such as Azure, Dynamics CRM, and Office 365. Convincing people to buy from Microsoft and not one of its myriad competitors will be a challenge in itself. But at least Microsoft realizes what it has to do.

My ‘beau’ was the man leading my poor, humped creature, hissing and spitting when it felt like it, an ancient, wizened leather-skinned, wrinkled, toothless fella who grinned and pinched my backside so hard it hurt. them all over so that they have a coating of a little oil on each side. Place the baking tray in the oven and cook for 20-30 minutes, turning the burgers over midway through cooking. Allow to cool a little before serving.

Preparation method Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onions on a medium heat, stirring frequently, until softened and slightly coloured. The small amount of oil used in this recipe means the onions might stick to the pan at some point; add a splash of water if necessary. Add the ginger, garlic and green chilli and continue to fry until cooked and any liquid has evaporated. Transfer the mixture to a plate, spread out and allow to cool.

Veggie bean burgers Ingredients 1 x 400g/14oz tin chickpeas or beans such as borlotti, kidney or butterbeans, drained and rinsed

Splendidly spicy beef burger

300g/10½oz cooked, mashed vegetables such as carrot, squash, potato, sweet potato or parsnip

Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower oil or rapeseed oil, plus extra for brushing

1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp sunflower, vegetable or olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

squeeze lemon juice

2cm/¾in piece fresh root ginger, very finely chopped or ground to a paste

pinch ground cumin, coriander or paprika, mild chilli flakes, to taste

2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped or ground to a paste

freshly ground black pepper

1-2 green bird’s-eye chillies, seeds removed, very finely chopped

4 tbsp sesame seeds, breadcrumbs or Preparation method Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Mash the beans or chickpeas as much as you can either with a potato masher in a bowl or with a hand mixer (supervised). Alternatively you could make the mix in a food processor if you have one.

800g/1lb 14oz lean beef mince pinch salt 2 tsp ground cumin

Put the minced beef in a mixing bowl, add the onion mixture and all of the remaining ingredients, and mix well. (Mixing makes the meat more malleable and smoother; the more you work it, it the smoother it gets.) Shape into four to six burgers. Heat a griddle pan, hot plate, frying pan or barbecue to hot. Brush the burgers with a little oil and cook: four minutes each side for a medium finish for six burgers, a little longer if you have made four larger burgers. Rest the burgers for a few minutes while you sprinkle the cooked potato wedges with the spice blend. Serve the burgers in buns, with the wedges alongside and some ketchup for dipping.

Add the mashed vegetables and garlic and any herbs, spices or tahini that you want to use.

For the spicy potato wedges (optional) 1kg/2lb 4oz potatoes, unpeeled, cut into wedges

Mix well and the kids can taste and add lemon juice, spices or pepper to their taste.

1 tbsp rapeseed oil or vegetable oil

The mixture then needs to be rolled into four burger-sized balls with wet hands, or make 12 smaller “falafels” kids have the perfect sized hands for this. Flatten the balls slightly. If you like, you can coat them with sesame seeds, crushed crackers or breadcrumbs for extra crunch.

2 tsp mild red chilli powder

Drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil on a baking tray and place the “falafels” or bean burgers on top and then turn

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the potato wedges. Boil for 5-6 minutes, then drain. Place the parboiled potatoes on a baking tray, drizzle with the oil, then toss to coat. Put the tray in the oven and roast for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Mix the ingredients for the spice blend together in a small bowl and set aside until you serve.

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

Our Spring social evening held on 11th April was a great success and Karen Noble proved her worth as an excellent singer of pop, easy listening and breath-taking opera. We sold every ticket; the proceeds of which all contribute to the improvement of lower ‘C’. Thanks to everyone who supported us. However, at the beginning of the evening John read out a list of the items recently stolen: 3 garden chairs from the petanca court, new green netting, a quantity of slate, a decorative lion and three nice plant pots. Don’t forget that these items are all donated or paid for by YOU, so let us know if you see any suspicious activity. As I write, we’re looking forward to our AGM on 23 April, where Chairman, John, will hopefully continue and a new committee elected. We have to say goodbye to Ann, who is retiring as our Social Secretary and would like to offer her our heartfelt thanks for her immense hard work in organising so many of the lovely occasions we have all enjoyed together. Green Fingers has become a group of like-minded friends, not just gardeners (and labourers!): we receive so many positive comments, making all the efforts worthwhile. Even if you missed the AGM we always welcome new committee members, also new volunteers; offering free breakfast butties on Wednesdays to sweeten the hard labour - Come along and make new friends: even if you’re only here for your hols, you’ll be beautifying our whole community! Our little windmill has been much improved by the skills of Ron Hacker; his addition of a roof and new canvas sails have given it true Spanish authenticity! Both sleeper features on the large area of the Golf Club corner have been completed and more gravel spread, together with the new

tree avenue on the dual carriageway. If you can donate any plants, pots etc. we’d be most grateful. The water butt donated by the pig farmer has been sited there and filled, but any time you can spend watering; both plants and the volunteers is very much appreciated! Every Euro of each member’s monthly payment is used to enhance the whole of ‘C’, though the general programme of maintenance may only reach your road every few weeks – even the inner streets and pavements of the empty Monsora houses get the Green Fingers treatment! Health &Wellbeing Is this normal or a common health problem? One of the most common questions asked when we explain people’s results to them is, ‘Well isn’t that normal?’ This raises a very important point, the difference between health changes that are common and those that are normal. Normal values are found in all aspects of health and whilst it is not realistic to think everybody hits a perfect score, it is expected that we fall within these normal ranges in order to achieve health. The most known examples of normal would be those of the vital signs; blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse and temperature. A list of which has been listed below for your reference. Blood pressure: 100/60 mm/Hg to 130/90 mm/Hg Breathing: 12 - 18 breaths per minute Pulse: 60 - 100 beats per minute Temperature: 97.8 - 99.1 degrees

Fahrenheit / average 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. As you can see in the examples above there are ranges of normal which allow for small variations person to person. However fall outside of the ranges of normal and health challenges start to present. This brings us nicely onto that which is common. It is common in today’s society for children to be overweight or obese. With the ever increasing intake of sugar it may become common (in the future) for people to have diabetes, however this will not make these examples normal. Normal values for health have been established based on what is optimum for human performance; this is known as something called homeostasis. This basically means the body is in a state of balance and can function correctly. So how does this

Health &Wellbeing Protecting Your SkinÂ FromÂ the SunÂ The arrival of warmer weather usually means spending more time outdoors in the sun. However, no matter what time of year it is, it is important to protect your skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation found in sunlight. Exposure to UV radiation is the numberone cause of skin cancer, which is the most common type of cancer diagnosed. Fortunately, most types of skin cancer can be prevented or successfully treated if they are found early.Â

Sun protection tipsÂ Use sunscreen every day, even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cloudy.You should choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation, is water resistant, and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higherApply a generous amount of sunscreen (at least one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass) 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. Remember to reapply it every two hours or more often (every hour) if you are swimming or sweating. Also apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.Â

Sunscreen should be worn year round whenever you are outside. Do not use sunscreens if they have expired.Â Be careful around water, snow, or sand. These surfaces reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase the chance of sunburn.Â Wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.Â Pay attention to the UV index, which is often included in the weather report. New manager Javi FC’s fortunes. Despite losing his first game against La Hoya Lorca CF by the narrow margin of 1-0, Mazarron went on to win three successive games for the first time this season. In addition to the marked improvement in performances and results, Javi had a positive impact on the poor disciplinary record at the Club and only three yellow cards in total were issued to Mazarron players in those three games.

Ten goals were scored and only two conceded which meant that the defence, which had been leaking goals previously, had been tightened without detracting from the free scoring play of the forwards. By mid April, Tolo’s 22 goals (eight of them with his previous club Soho.Medi), and Jose Ruben’s 19 goals made them second and third top scorers in the league respectively. and John Dowgill coming 3rd with 30 points. The nearest the pin winner was also Tom, who declared he wanted a windy day each time the society meet!! Mad Dogs & Not ALL Englishmen…………… On Wednesday 26th March the members gathered at Corvera Golf to play the usual monthly game, although a large number had wondered why they had got out of bed. On a chilly and very, very windy day the members questioned the committee´s decision to venture out onto the course, but to a man they did. After several holes though there were many mutterings about the wind moving the ball from all angles and across the greens, faster than they could run. Still, and despite the grumbles, we all managed to get round to the 19th hole in one piece where cards were checked and the winner announced.

The Mayor of El Saladillo, Jose Navarro kindly acted as interpreter and all parties agreed that the afternoon had been most beneficial. This will now be repeated on a quarterly basis which should further cement the already excellent relationship between the Football Club and its ex-pat supporters. Bunker Play Many players dread greenside bunkers because they do not know the best way to hit out of them. Their set-ups are often inconsistent, their swing paths are incorrect, and their ball position is off. For consistent play in any aspect of the game, you need confidence. In order to gain this confidence, you must first learn and practice the most effective way to hit it close out of greenside traps. Here’s how to do it: Step 1 Choose the right club. If you’re in a bunker and you don’t have a lot of green to work with, you want to pick a high-lofted wedge, like a 60 degree lob wedge. The ball will not roll out as much. If you have some green to work with, you want a lower lofted wedge, such as a sand wedge or a gap wedge. Step 2 Take the Right Set Up The right set up is the key to hitting an effective bunker shot. First, dig in: twist your feet into the sand. Having a good solid base is vital and you also get a feel for how deep the sand is around your ball. For most bunker shots you want to play the ball off your front foot. The farther you move the ball back, the lower trajectory the ball will take and the more it will run out. This can be useful with some shots, but as a

general rule, play the ball off your front foot. Keep in mind this isn’t a pitch and run. The shot is going to have backspin. Next, Slightly open your stance and the clubface. This is very important. This promotes a higher, softer ball flight and allows a good angle for the clubface to slide under the ball. Finally, you need your weight on your front foot. The weight should be about 80%-20% favouring the front foot. Step 3 The swing You want a slight outside-in swing path with a slight wrist hinge at the top. How far back depends on how far you want the ball to fly. This swing path gets the ball to come out high and soft and with the maximum control. You will need to practice this until it feels natural and to judge the yardages correctly. Step 4: The follow through You must follow through and stay down longer on bunker shots. If you decelerate or stop at impact, you chunk it. In a greenside bunker, you want to splash the ball out, and to do that you must have a steep swing and a high follow through. If you come up on it too soon, you’ll catch the shot thin and blade it. Don’t be afraid to take a slightly bigger swing; you are taking sand with the shot. It won’t go as far. Some of the hardest shots we will face on the course come from bunkers, and knowing how to hit these shots gives us the best chance to save a low score. Follow these tips and you’ll improve your bunker play.

Collared, car vandal that turned out to be a dog Border Collie Jess is caught on CCTV biting tyres in the quiet Cumbrian village of Brampton A mystery car vandal hunted by police has finally been collared - and revealed to be a dog. Residents were upset that car tyres had been left repeatedly punctured over the past six months so set up CCTV in the village of Brampton, Cumbria. The culprit caught on camera was not a feral youth but a border collie called Jess. The dog had been sinking its teeth into tyres while on a daily walk with its owner, leaving slow punctures and flat tyres in its wake, in what is rumoured to be revenge for a car accident. Anne Taylor, who set up CCTV, said that the footage shows Jess biting the nearside front and then back wheel. “It disappears for a few seconds then comes back and has another go,” she told the BBC. “Apparently it was run over about and 18 months ago and it seems to have a thing about cars. “With monstrous regularity it went flat whilst I was driving, it felt like I had square wheels. They were irreparable because the damage was to the side walls so it is buying a new tyre each time.” The owner was said to be unaware of the damage the pet was causing and has promised she will be kept on a lead in the future. Pc Simon Amos, from Cumbria Police, said: “These incidents have been happening for the past six months, with many residents being very upset at the thought of someone targeting them and causing the damage deliberately. “The dog had been seen approaching the cars and many believe that she was just sniffing at the tyres. It isn’t until you take

a closer look, that you can see her biting the tyres. “The owner has been contacted and has been very surprised and also apologetic about the whole situation. He will be now keeping Jess on a lead.

Spain’s bestselling cars made at home MOST of the bestselling cars of 2013 in Spain are manufactured in plants located within the country. This is according to the Spanish Car and Lorry Manufacturers Association (Anfac), which revealed that six out of the 10 most sold cars last year were made in Spain. The bestselling model in Spain during 2013 was the Citroen C4 with 23,837 units sold. The multi-purpose versions of this vehicle, the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso, are manufactured at the PSA Peugeot Citroen plant in Vigo. This car is available as a five or as a seven-seater. The second bestselling model last year is also made in Spain. With 23,310 units sold, the Renault Megane is made at the French manufacturer’s plant in Palencia. The Government has passed the ball back to the consumer as far as pensions and investments are concerned. For years we have been under the nanny state - now the pendulum swings the other way and suddenly we are all deemed to be capable of looking after what may be our largest asset (apart from the house we live in). In theory this is a good thing, but it fails to address whether most of us can wade our way through the jargon that plagues the financial services industry. Advisers in that world deal with phrases like “benefit crystallisation event” and “critical yield” all day and every day, often losing sight of the clients they are aiming to help. To quote from one website that provides a “Simple Guide to Financial Terms”: “Total Expense Ratio (TER) The total fees involved in managing and operating a fund. The TER included the annual management fee and other charges, ie legal, admin and audit costs. Following the introduction of KIIDs, TERs have been replaced with OCFs”. Of course they have, dear ! Some terms are unavoidable but if you have chosen a regulated financial adviser who works under the rules laid down by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK, then you should have the important elements explained to you – in words you can understand and are comfortable with. And if you are not sure – ask!! And the same applies to what advice on this topic would cost you. We operate to the rules laid down by the FCA in the UK. Spain Has Homes For All Of Europes Homeless Europe has over 11 million empty properties, 3.4 million of which are in Spain, which is more than enough to house the continent’s homeless population of 4.1 million, a UK newspaper has reported. Europe’s growing problem of homelessness could be solved at a stroke, say campaigners. They point to the findings of a new study which has revealed that there are 11 million empty properties across Europe, including 3.4 million in Spain which

tops the charts as the continent’s worst offender. In their opinion, all that needs to happen is a handover of some of these empty homes to people who are living on the streets.

With 3.4 million vacant homes, Spain has more than Italy, estimated to have 2.2 million empty properties, and Germany, which has slightly less at 1.8 million. The UK has around 700,000 empty residential properties which could potentially be occupied while Ireland has 400,000 and Portugal 735,000. “Governments should do as much as possible to put empty homes on the market. The problem of homelessness is getting worse across the whole of the European Union. The best way to resolve it is to put empty homes on the market.” Said Freek Spinnewijn from FEANTSA, a European-wide organisation that brings together national bodies fighting against homelessness The blame for the empty properties in Spain has been laid squarely at the feet of the housing market and its investors. Spain’s construction bubble in the decade before the beginning of the financial crisis was “fed largely by Britons and Germans buying homes in the sun,” according to the report, leading to prices rising by 44 percent between 2004 and 2008. Building companies worked at breakneck speed to create up to 800,000 new properties a year to keep pace with demand. The 3.4 million empty homes in Spain represent 14 percent of all properties, according to last year’s Spanish census. Vacant houses and even entire ‘ghost towns’ can be found in parts of Spain

after being abandoned by construction companies. The problem is most acute in holiday resorts, some of which are still suffering from non-occupancy rates of over 30 percent some five years after the start of the economic crisis. Part of the problem lies with Spain’s high unemployment rate which has left many people unable to pay their mortgages. Repossessions of homes by banks has become a huge social issue in Spain, leading to mass protests and demonstrations. Many local campaigners have demanded changes to the Spanish which leaves homeowners liable for mortgage payments even after losing their properties. As banks continue to receive income, there is less pressure on them to put the houses back on the market. The banks have been accused of sitting on empty properties rather than lowering prices to sell them. Critics say that this is done deliberately to artificially inflate the assets column of banks’ accounts above true market value. In the north-east region of Catalonia, some councils have reportedly warned banks that they will be fined by up to €100,000 ($138,000) if repossessed homes remain empty for over two years while others have threatened that they will be compelled to hand them over for use as social housing.

Property, Financial and Legal ExPats Capitalising on Rising UK house Prices British expatriates are showing a trend for purchasing homes back in the UK in a bid to make the most of rising property prices and a weak pound. This is according to new research from Lloyds Bank, which has found that the housing market is attracting a lot of attention from overseas. It discovered that those living in the UAE, France and Switzerland are the most likely to buy a property back in the UK. The survey suggested that 30% of expats intend to purchase a house for buy-to-let purposes in the next 2 years.

This approach comes with the advantages of a regular income while living abroad and having something to show for it when returning to home. Some 25.8% of the 1,000 expats surveyed said they are looking at property in the UK, while 24.7% are interested in houses in Australia, 15.1% are focusing their attentions on the US and 8.2% intend to buy in Canada. One of the elements that make owning property in the UK so appealing is that it has a higher occupancy rate than other destinations. These houses yield rent in 71% of cases, which is high compared to the average 47% displayed by properties in foreign countries. Richard Musty, director at Lloyds Bank International Banking, said: “Confidence

MAY’S NEWSLETTER Hi everyone, hope you’re all enjoying the lovely spring weather? Another busy month has gone by in the world of AAR. Despite the fact that we are criticised for not taking in any dogs/puppies, we have been involved in rescuing and rehoming a lot of them over the last number of months. We are predominately an Equine Charity and will always do our best for Donkeys and Horses wherever possible, but we do take in a lot of other animals, mostly dogs, some cats, and even sheep, rabbits and pigs! There is little we turn away, provided of course that we have the space! Without the re-homing process we are limited as to what we can take of course. We are in the process of getting the paperwork ‘rubber stamped’ to remove two Donkeys and a Horse from the Pound and certain death should they remain. It is a long-winded process and not for the faint-hearted, but we are neither that or about to give up on them! We have an adopter already and waiting for the Horse, but would welcome any adopters or sponsors for the two Donkeys. Basil, the little dog with the severe skin condition, who was found by Barry, one of our volunteers, is doing really well. His skin has improved vastly and guess what? He has found his forever home with none other than his rescuer, the lovely Basil before Barry! Think it was love at first sight! Away you go Basil, you lucky dog! Little Poppy, one of the litter of five puppies we took in, is the last of her siblings and a bit lonely now, still looking for her forever home. She’s a beautiful girl and will make someone a very special companion. Any takers??

They gave me a Volkswagen with no driver. I went to the local video shop and I said “Can I borrow Batman Forever?” He said, “No, you’ll have to bring it back tomorrow”

She said, “Are you having me on?” I said, “Well I’ll give you an audition, but I’m not promising you anything.” I phoned the local builders today, I said to them “Can I have a skip outside my house?” He said, “I’m not stopping you” This cowboy walks in to a German car showroom and he says “Audi!”
