Welcome to the May 2016 edition of The Journal! We hope that you have had a fantastic April and are all relaxed and prepared for the influx of family and friends that love to come and visit during the summer months! This month we have another fun filled, action packed magazine lined up for you with some great news, features, book reviews, charity information and of course all the information that you need to keep up to date with what is going on in and around our community! As with all close knit communities we all experience problems from time to time, so all our readers will be glad to know that after a brief hiatus our resident agony uncleUncle Paul is back with us dealing with all manner of issues that our readers face! Welcome back Uncle Paul, it is both an honour and a pleasure to have you contribute to our magazine! Last month we published a news article about the use of 500€ notes and how the European bank was considering abolishing them. We would like to make it clear to all our readers that the 500€ notes are still legal tender so please don’t worry if you have a mattress stuffed full of them- you can still use them! But if you are really worried about it, then we will do our bit to help. Please feel free to drop bundles of the 500€ notes off at our office and we will make sure that they are recycled. (Most likely into a Porsche and villa in Mallorca!) These days technology moves so fast, internet, smartphones, computers even a young man (Ahem!) like myself finds it difficult to keep up to date with things. This is why we are delighted to welcome KP Computers from Camposol to our magazine. These guys really know their stuff, so if you are stuck with any kind of computing problem whatsoever, be it hardware, software, internet or any general problem, don’t hesitate to give them a call. Podemos Reject Socialist Pact Elections Loom

Members of Spanish anti-austerity political party Podemos (We Can) have overwhelmingly rejected a coalition pact with socialist party PSOE.

Podemos, led by Pablo Iglesias, an exuniversity professor, balloted its members in a referendum on whether the party should back PSOE, along with Ciudadanos (Citizens) in an historic coalition to become the next government of Spain. However, almost 90% rejected the proposals largely because of the alliance between PSOE and Ciudadanos. Podemos views Ciudadanos as being far right, too far right from their own leftist position. The ongoing stalemate, the result of inconclusive elections in December 2015, has left Spain without an official government for several months and left the previous centre-right PP (Peoples Party) government in office, albeit in a caretaker capacity. Currently, the PP, which won the most votes in the election but failed to secure a majority, have more or less been left to do as they please. They do not believe their current caretaker role in government warrants parliamentary or public scrutiny. A position which has infuriated opposition parties claiming it’s unconstitutional, a matter for the constitutional court to

decide. However any decision is unlikely to be made in the near future. Spain’s King Felipe VI is due to hold meetings with political parties next week in a last ditch attempt to break the deadlock. But many believe fresh elections are inevitable. Ironically, the political impasse has done little to derail the economic recovery following deep double-dip recessions and appears to be steaming ahead leading many to believe it being the result of there actually being no government. However, analysts are warning that further prolonging the political uncertainty will have profound longterm effects on the economy where the budget deficit struggles to meet tough EU and IMF demands time and time again and unemployment continues to hover around 20%. Political polls had previously suggested that a return to the ballot box could significantly favour the PP and weaken both Podemos and PSOE by losing seats gained in the December 2015 elections. Ciudadanos had been predicted to remain roughly the same. More recent official polls are now suggesting the situation may not change that much at all and could result in another hung parliament. A prospect which could see Spain without an officially elected government for another 6 months, effectively writing off up to 18 months of effective political leadership.

Many British Expats ‘Will Repatriate’ The cliché of British retirees moving to warmer countries and living the lifestyle of their dreams may become a thing of the past. A third of British expats who settled abroad are planning on returning to the UK, figures suggest, in new findings published by NatWest International Personal Banking. In the study, 97% of expats stated they are dissatisfied with their experience abroad, citing an increased cost of living as a cause for concern. Furthermore, 99% of those asked pointed towards constant financial worries as a deciding factor on a return to the UK. The global economic downturn has particularly affected the lives of expats living in European countries, due to falling property prices on the continent affecting the value of their homes. It isn’t just financial strain pulling pensioners back to the UK however. Another issue facing retired expats that was brought to light in the survey was

missing family and friends based in the UK. Despite advances in technology improving communication lines between loved ones, it appears a video call with relatives doesn’t prove enough to quash the pang of heartache. Furthermore, for many retirees the novelty of their new life abroad can often wear off and the yearning for a return to British culture becomes a real concern. 100% of people surveyed stated their loyalty still lies in the UK despite endeavours to make another country their home and they see their identity as a British national as a useful asset. Dave Isley, head of NatWest IPB, commented: “It is inevitably disappointing for expats who do not feel their expectations are fulfilled by their new life overseas. It is important for anyone planning a move abroad that they make an informed decision which factors in both the financial realities of living abroad and considers the impact of living in a new environment. It is important that people do not expect an extended holiday when they plan their new life away from the UK.” Despite evidence suggesting that the grass is not always greener, research conducted by Retirement Advantage in 2015 ranked Spain as the top destination of choice as a retirement destination for the over-50s at 24%. Following close behind were North America (22%) and France (20%).

However, it is not all negative. Despite British pensioners potentially returning home due to their expat dreams turning sour, younger people are increasingly moving abroad. The Quality of Life Index found that younger expats, aged 25 to 35, are increasing and now make up 27% of all British people living overseas.

Gastroenteritis Outbreak Linked to Bottled water

The regional health authority for Catalonia has revealed more than 670 people have been affected by an outbreak of Gastroenteritis linked to bottled water. As of Saturday, at least 678 people had been treated for symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and high fever the health authority announced on Twitter. Wikipedia describes Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea, as inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that involves the stomach and small intestine which can be due to infections by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungus. The most common cause is a virus, the rotavirus in children and norovirus in adults. Bottles of water have been withdrawn from retail outlets and scientific samples are being taken from bottling plants and distributors to determine the source of the outbreak the regional health agency said in a statement, although no company name or brand was revealed. Separately, bottled water company Grupo Eden Springs said in a statement it had withdrawn pallets of bottled water from its Font d’Arinsal source near Barcelona. It’s not clear whether the water source or company is behind the outbreak.

Spain riled over dance hit ‘I took a pill in Ibiza’ Up until a few weeks ago, Mike Posner was a little-known singer from Detroit. He released an album in 2010 that went mostly unnoticed, and had been writing songs for other people since. But in 2015 he managed to produce a new album whose single, “I Took a Pill in Ibiza”, has reached the top of the British Top 40 chart and made it to number 9 on the US Billboard’s Hot 100. The lyrics paint a pessimistic picture of the loneliness and sadness that surround the music industry, with a special focus on his own professional failure. The only mention of the Spanish island is made in the first line, which recalls Posner’s experience with ecstasy, casting it in a negative light. But even that was enough to prompt action from Ibiza officials, who are determined to fight the clichés that abound about the Balearic island destination. Last year, they managed to halt the shoot of the reality show Ibiza Shore (MTV), which they felt was going to offer “a negative image of the island.” And now, authorities have reacted to Posner’s song as well. The island’s director of tourism, Vicent Torres, told Agence France Presse that they have invited the artist to come to Ibiza to discover what lies beyond the bars and the nightclubs. “We have a lot more to offer besides

world-famous nightlife,” he said. “We have museums, beaches, culture, cuisine and a great range of things to offer, but unfortunately we’ve been typecast.” Judging by Posner’s own account, his relationship with drugs and with Ibiza has been close to nil. “It was sort of a mystery pill. I was already under the influence of alcohol at the time. I had written a song with Avicii that week in Sweden called ‘Stay With You’ and he was playing in Ibiza so I said, ‘I’ll just go there with you,’ because I was already in Europe. I don’t have like a regular 9-5 job … so might as well go to Ibiza, right? I had never been there before. So I went,” he explained on the music website Genius. “We were at his show and I was drinking at the time,” he continues. “And most people didn’t know who the fuck I was in Ibiza except for this one guy who recognized me. He was like, ‘Are you Mike Posner?’ and he was all excited. He holds up this little bag of pills and is like, ‘You want one?’ And drunk Mike Posner was like, ‘F&%k it, yeah.’ So I took one and I had never done that before, and I felt amazing. Then when I came down I felt ten years older…”

said that “the song starts with the singer taking ecstasy but the lyrics clearly state he had a negative experience. [...] It’s a controversial song but we trust our audience to recognize it doesn’t endorse drugs.” However, radio DJs were told to refer to the song simply as “In Ibiza”. The original acoustic version of the song came with a simple music video shot in black and white and based on Bob Dylan’s classic Don’t look back, in which the artist stands in front of the camera with cue cards displaying words included in the lyrics. But the video made to go with the remix – created by the Norwegians SeeB – does include explicit drug-related scenes and has already notched up 61 million views on YouTube. According to regional government figures, more than 2.5 million people visited Ibiza and the neighbouring island Formentera last year.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. Leo’s

On Saturday 23rd April 2016, St George day, 33 kids and 17 adults of the Leos and their friends set off on a sponsored walk. The walk was started at Bolnuevo’s Puntabela going through Mazarron Port, Isla Plana, L’Azhoia and finishing at the Torre de Santa Elena. The walk was 22km long and raised money for MABS Hospice, Strides diabetes camp for kids and an operation for a local girl Paula to enable her to smile for the first time. Due to the school activities that week some of the kids started the walk with blisters, others developed blisters on route, but all finished the walk. Let’s not forget the adults who also got blisters, but were too tired to complain. The youngest walker on the day was 7

and the eldest 67, so once everything was done all returned home for a well deserved drink of wine or milk. Some fantastic local businesses and individuals sponsored the kids to wear their T-shirts on the walk which boosted the money raised greatly. Not to be missed The Pradera of San Isidro: this is the place where the genuine festivity of San Isidro is celebrated on the morning of 15 May. Throngs of people flock to take part in a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Saint, where tradition dictates that everyone must drink from the spring. Technology favorite gyroscopic ride into a fully-functional robot that can follow its owner around. To build the Segway Robot, the company partnered with Intel and Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi. Segway says the Robot is the first in a line of products that it plans on jointly engineering with its two partners.

Segway Advanced Personal Robot revealed The Segway looked like half hoverboard, half Segway. Instead of Segwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trademark handlebar attached to the wheels, this one had a pole attached to the wheels that came up to around knee-level. Segway was purchased by Chinese Ninebot Company Segway, based in New Hampshire, was purchased in April 2015 by Chinese scooter rival Ninebot, famous for its one-wheeled electric scooter. The merged company announced earlier this week that it would adopt the Segway name and make Ninebot a brand within the Segway umbrella.

You ride all the way to the park but now you want to get off and walk around in without carrying or pushing a heavy vehicle. This week at CES 2016, Ninebot and Intel unveiled the new Segway Robot, a device which morphs from everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Intel is involved with the project, because the Segway Robot uses an Intel RealSense 3D camera to see the world around it. Because of RealSenseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s depth-perception capabilities, the robot is able to identify people and avoid bumping into objects as it rolls around. The product is a result of the collaboration between Ninebot, Intel, and Xiaomi Ninebot Segway can reach speeds up to 11 miles per hour A single charge can provide a battery life that would last for up to 18 miles Developers are welcome to develop Android-based apps for the robot The robot can move around using sensors similar to those of the Roomba Bring in the Ninebot Segway, the result of the collaboration between Ninebot, which provided the idea, Intel, which provided the machineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s processor and sensors, and Xiaomi, as the main investors. Segway that turns into a robot when you get off it. Developers chose to call it a hoverboard now, as it lacks a handlebar, everything being made digital; well, that and also because hoverboards became a very over-utilized name for products last year, regardless if they actually hovered or if they were boards. After riding the new Segway, it opens its digital eyes and gets a mind of its own. The developers say that it is a huge step towards a helpful house robot, but that remains to be seen. After someone had stopped the Segway, a Ninebot rep hit a button on the pole, and the device lifted up a tiny robot head with an LCD screen on it showing a pair of blinking eyes. As I stood in front of the device, the screen changed to show a live view from its camera with a green box around my body.The robot had correctly identified me as a person and, as I walked around, the robot rolled after me, though at a bit of a distance.

We all still know the famous .com TLD still holds the throne, although with the new ever increasing gTLD market, the .com has some real competition! - The new gTLDs like .design, .hotel, .social, etc... Allows for the people to be more creative and it gives us many more options to choose from, although some of these can be pretty pricey and some have conditions that must be checked before you can buy one, one such example is the .hotel gTLD, which requires you to have an actual hotel, make sense right? If you aren’t a fan of the new gTLDs there is always .net or a country based TLD like .be (Belgium), .es (Spain) or .co.uk (United Kingdom) What is a good domain name? A good domain name can really depend on your needs, although some are quite obvious such as Yellowpages.com, Advertise.com or Fashion.com which are 1 or 2 worded self-explantory domains and are obviously best choice if you can find them, but that isnt always the case. Next on the quality list we have branded names without real meaning like Google.com (Which is a play-around of the word “Googol”, meaning an inmensly

large number wikipedia), Twitter. com or WhatsApp.com, they are easy to remember and people will always find you on search engines as noone will have really used it on the web. You should always refrain if you can from using special characters like the “-” if you can, and if you can’t find the right domain name with the .com, try getting a .net or a country based one instead, sometimes it might just be the best option to take. As for the amount of characters, I always try to focus on names below 8 characters as they are easy to remember and type I believe, I’m not really a fan of long domain names and would rather go for brandable stuff, but then again, that’s just me! Where does my money go when I pay for a domain? Many people wonder where their money goes when they pay for the domain, this money does not go to the hosting company or neither your website developer / maintainer, sure, they put a small transaction fee on top, but most of the money goes directly to the country of origin, for example if you was to buy a .be domain, then the money would go to Belgium, the same for .de to Germany, and so forth. Usually you would pay no more than 20€ a year for one of these domains.

The Beginners Guide to the 40th Anniversary of Franco’s Death – ‘History’ Remains Fluid

El Caudillo. The Generalissimo. Supreme patriotic military hero by the Grace of God. Whatever you want to call him, Franco was a short man with a penchant for moustaches and murder. When people think of dictators, they think of Franco’s mate Hitler, or more current dictators such as Mugabe or the North Koreans with bad haircuts. Some would say Franco was a coward in comparison, or more moderate. If you turn from the word dictator and instead to fascism, the dictionary will give you Franco as a definition. Call Franco whatever you like, but November 20 is the day to celebrate his slow and painful death. The day in 1975 when cava and champagne bottles were popping faster than overheated popcorn. That day, Spaniards, at home and in exile, could finally shake off their not-so wonderful leader. Born in December 1892 in Galicia, Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco Bahamonde was one in a long line of relatives in the navy. But instead Franco chose the army in 1907, and worked his way through the ranks through wars in Morocco, and was shot in the stomach in 1916, and lost a testicle (it is rumoured). He continued fighting and winning medals, and by the midtwenties, he was ranked high enough to be before the King in Madrid. The royal family got run out of the country when the Second Spanish Republic took hold in 1931, but it wasn’t until Franco’s cozy position at the army academy in Zaragoza being extinguished did Franco start getting angry. Posted to the Balearic Islands for a few years, Franco got a taste of killing his own people during the miner’s strike in Asturias in 1934. He crushed innocents defending their rights, and the left and right side of politics only continued to divide as bitterness set into the young Republic. After the 1936 elections, all went to hell, and Franco found himself leading an army from Morocco into Spain to depose the Republican government. Fast forward through three years of

brutal civil war though 1936-1939 (if I explain that in detail, we will be here forever), and Franco’s Nationalist army, backed by fascists, Carlists, monarchists, any right-wing nutball group really, had defeated the Republicans, with the communists, anarchists and general plucky young men and women from Spain and overseas fighting for freedom. After gross atrocities, upwards of 200,000 people were killed. Franco was the leader of Spain, a nation decimated by force and hate. The short, moustached, one-testicled Hitler lover was in control. Spain was no picnic. So many fled the country, many to France, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina… basically anywhere but Spain. Artists, teachers, bright minds, and those of the left-wing all ran for their lives. Spain skipped the Second World War after basically being in pieces, claiming neutrality, though Franco loved Hitler’s style of hating. While Franco was claiming that Spain had struck gold and all would be well, 200,000 people starved to death in the first half of the 1940’s. The whole decade was spent rounding up people who had supported the Republican side of the civil war, and up to 50,000 were killed, or put in concentration camps, or just ‘disappeared’. Franco was brutal and bizarre. He could be easily played with wild schemes. But his own plan, being anti-Communist, won him love from the United States. They were allowed to set up military bases, Spain got money and their love for Hitler, Mussolini, etc was swept under the carpet. Spain and its technocrats were keen to move on and make Spain wealthy and prosperous again, though naturally, all spoils only went to the people at the top of the food chain. Spain’s Años de Desarrollo, years of development began through 19611973, with Franco promoting tourism, bullfighting, flamenco, everything superSpanish. Financially, things got much better, but since everyone was doing so poorly, ‘much better’ still wasn’t great. Many Spaniards were still living overseas. Riots broke out at universities, women were still horribly oppressed, with divorce, abortions and birth control illegal. They couldn’t have bank accounts without male oversight, and couldn’t even leave a violent husband, real middle-ages style of living. The church was sticking its evil nose into everything, being gay was illegal, local languages were banned, and nuns loved hitting kids in schools and orphanages. By 1969, Franco was getting old and handing more power to the lecherous bastards who profited from his reign. It was time to choose an heir. Franco had one daughter (though that has been questioned, given the testicle incident, but never mind), and Franco chose Juan Carlos de Bourbon, grandson to the

Spanish King exiled to France in 1931. The young man, dutifully married to a Greek princess, would be modelled and educated in the ways of Francoism – basically being a murderous douche. Even as Franco was getting super old in the 1970’s, he was still being real bastard, handing down executions just months before his death. Young people were rising up, wanting change in their country, and groups such as ETA wanted their regions’ independence back, as did Catalonia, Galicia, Valencia – basically everyone. In the final months of Franco’s reign, countries were having protests against his execution decisions, Mexico tried to have Spain kicked from the UN, and the Pope wasn’t interested in him anymore, which isn’t cool for a Catholic nation. But on October 1st, Franco have a hate speech from his palace and left in tears. From that moment, his number was up. Pneumonia, heart attacks and then internal bleeding took hold. Machines kept the old man alive and drugged. Doctors worked day and night for the man who let people be shot by firing squads or starve to death. But after 35 days of pumping life into a frail old man, on November 20, 1975, Franco finally passed away. The parties started, in Spain and all around the world, where Spaniards had waited for the day. Half a million people went to see his body, just to see the proof for themselves (this figure remains disputed, like all figures during Spain’s 20th century). Spain, which had been lying dormant, could live again. The protege, Juan Carlos, was crowned King, and tossed Francoism aside, opting for democracy. None of that was an easy ride as the road to the Transition began. The trouble is, those killed during and after the war are still buried in their makeshift graves. Those lecherous wannabes who circled Franco did not lose their place in politics, and among the wealthy and elite. Those who were evil were all given amnesty, to smooth the road for democracy. Justice was never served; Spain’s hard questions remained unanswered for so many. Those who did wrong have grown old, as those who were harmed. The varying levels of independence of Spain’s 17 regions still causes headaches. Does Spain still need to ask questions of its past, or is the future hard enough? By Caroline Angus Baker. Review of Tales of the Alhambra by Wasington Irving

I have long since wanted to visit Granada and the last bastion of the Moorish kings. Alhambra, the Red Palace, built on a high point overlooking the Vega. An imposing fortress, its plain facade belies its exquisite interior and gardens, together with the summer palace of Generalife but a stones throw outside the guardianship of its walls. Irvings’ account of the people and places he encountered on his journey in the spring of 1829 from Seville to Granada in company with a friend, a member of

the Russian Embassy in Madrid, gives a romantic notion to the mountains of Andalusia. A wild and sometimes desolate landscape, of rugged mountains and long sweeping plains, devoid of singing birds only vultures and eagles wheeling about the mountain-cliffs. His observant nature and curiosity of his fellow man has drawn out in his account of the tales told to him when the Governor’s apartments in the Alhambra were lent to him as lodgings. A singular account of the day to day life of the inhabitants of this Citadel, the Royal Palace forms but a part of this fortress with it’s tower and battlement studded walls stretching around the crest of a hill, a spur of the Sierra Nevada or Snowy Mountains, overlooking the city far below. In the time of the Moors the fortress was capable of containing within its outward precincts an army of forty thousand men. The Legends and traditions, songs and ballads Arabian and Spanish associated with this Oriental Pile are woven together under Irving’s gifted talent as a “teller of tales” Washington Irving was born in 1783 New York City, better known for his short stories “ Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon , Gent. His historical publications include biographies of George Washington, his name sake and hero of the revolution, whom he met as a 6 years old boy whilst Washington was living in New York after his inauguration as president in 1789. Dawn Llewellyn-Price Early last month, following a steady stream of April fool’s jokes with everything from Floral Paint to Scottish salmon bred to taste of lemon dressing, a headline inside one recycled Daily Mail from above (my neighbour, not any of the various deities inhabiting the heavens) caught my eye. ‘Spain to ditch siesta-time.’ Mierde! I checked the date, thinking I’d picked up the wrong paper. I hadn’t. El Senor Rajoy wants to bring Spain in line with the rest of Europe, including adjusting the clocks, bringing businesses and air conditioned offices into the 21st Century, and leaving my mother able to understand why flight times on airline tickets made it seem she was far longer in the air than she actually was. Not really going to work in Murcia, though, is it? Will all the tomato pickers suddenly

turn up to work in suits and ties with a bowler hat, under EU directives, take an hour’s lunch, then continue until 5pm, carrying their briefcases home at the end of the shift?

Could this signal the end of the menu del dia, and will we be forced to queue outside our favourite restaurants, one line for the workers, one line for the ex pats? If they’ve only got an hour to eat their lunch, they’ll be chomping at the bit to get in first and beleaguered Brits in bikinis, boxers and bandanna’s, will be in the secondary queue, moaning and swatting away flies, awaiting a table. I know we’re known for our queueing skills and temperate-toe-tapping-inTesco, but put us outside our favourite rest-au-rant-e in forty degrees with a flamenco of flies fandangoing across foreheads, and I foresee passports at dawn, providing the clocks haven’t gone back.

Peace and quiet will reign. No more noisy bars with bands and music blaring, all will be spread out over four or five months instead. Cancel those fiestas, they’ll all be in work. A slow amble, a quick coffee, a quiet wander around Mercadonna’s empty August aisles. No scraped paintwork on your passenger doors, no circling around the backstreets looking for an empty space on the pavement or someone’s driveway. Ah peace. Sod that, I’m moving to Italy. They still have a couple of hours off at lunchtime.

Rajoy reckons it will save marriages as lengthy working hours means families hardly get any time together, with husbands and wives arriving home often way past the finishing time of 8pm. What will they do? No more sneaky bottles of wine and a snooze (or more) during the heated hours. Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

As I write, we’re looking forward to our AGM on 27 April, where John, our current Chairman, will be standing down so a new Chair and committee will have been elected. Green Fingers has become a group of like-minded friends, as well as gardeners (and labourers!). We receive so much encouragement, making all the efforts worthwhile. Even if you missed the AGM we always welcome new committee members, also new volunteers; offering free breakfast butties on Wednesdays to sweeten the hard work…Come along and make new friends: even if you’re only here for your hols, you’ll be beautifying our whole community! This has been a record year for us The flowering shrubs in 8 large troughs (donated by a Camposol resident – thank you!) are already looking lovely alongside the new palm avenue planted along the Rambla road; the troughs have been concreted in and secured with bolts to deter anyone with light fingers – please be vigilant. It was a difficult task as the ground had to be cleared by Jose from the Garden Centre on ‘B’ before 4 lorryloads of soil could be spread to plant in. A huge thank you to him and those who turned out to help - it has made a huge difference to the main roadways, all paid for by our fundraisers and donations; It has been a record year for us: a huge increase of 26% over last year in our bucket collections and every penny has been spent on trees, plants,

gravel, membrane and compost. Thank you everyone! This month our Maintenance Team continued the street cleaning programme: every Euro of each member’s monthly payment is used to sweep, weed and spray the whole of

them with their future endeavours; Good Luck! How we all welcome this time of the year… lovely warming sunshine - not too hot, not too cold - and occasional showers, just enough we hope to get the plants and trees going again. The weeds of course seem to take up the first advantage and, as we are still waiting for the relevant authority to be able to spray them, it is likely to be a bit more of a problem this year.

Since our last Newsletter we have completed pruning the palm trees along the duel carriageway and on the roundabouts. Some of the trees have grown taller than we feel able to safely tackle so we may have to resort to seeking professional assistance, unless of course the council decide to take on the task. Cough! path leading from B5 to the Footbridge, so we have now laid a concrete path (and thanks to the person who couldn’t resist putting his footprint in the wet cement, - there’s always ‘one’ isn’t there?!) We will be putting in more plants and generally tidying up that area shortly. One of our Spanish residents kindly donated a large number of potted flowers and plants, and these have been used along with a number of pots donated by other residents to brighten up the newly graveled area along the side of the dual carriageway. Thanks to all those who help out in this way. Thanks also to all who stop and donate into our Bucket collections and special thanks to the recent generosity shown by Oscar and Antonio of the Club Social. The recent situation relating to the Green Waste Bins during the past few months seems to have improved, so we are optimistic that at last the message is getting through. The message is simple: If the Bin is full take your green waste to the Eco Park. Please do not offload your waste onto the tarmac and expect others to clear up after you. We have a continuing need for willing volunteers! The numbers coming forward to give help with the planting, weeding, litter clearing, watering, etc. are few. So, please contact us if you can offer some assistance. We meet every Tuesday morning for a couple of hours and each extra pair of hands makes a great difference. Some people may not be aware of our ‘B Clean’ Community Group Scheme which currently has about 75 members who subscribe regularly to a fund which pays for the ongoing costs of our sectors upkeep. Without these funds ‘B Clean’ would not be able to function. We hope more will join the scheme and subscribe just 5 euros a month to help us keep Camposol looking great. During the last couple of weeks all the streets of Los Palacios have been sprayed with weed killer, so hopefully all the weeds are now dying off. It would be great if those who are fit and well enough could spend just a couple of minutes outside of their own house and pull out the dead weeds please. Obviously this helps ensure the weeds don't return as quickly next time. The gardening volunteers are trying their best, but unfortunately we just don't have enough people to do all the routine maintenance tasks to help keep everywhere looking at its best. For the first time since the group started we have just had to pay a private contractor to carry out the weed spraying due to lack of manpower. We could really do with additional people to help out, anyone interested can either contact us on our Facebook page, or come along to the commercial centre on Los Palacios on a Monday morning between 9.30 - 10.30am and speak to one of the existing members. Everyone will be made extremely welcome and it's a great way to meet new people and make new friends. Most people only work for one hour per week, so it's not a massive time commitment.

Having had a busy month, the Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group have made significant progress on our two new projects. Work has now nearly finished on developing the area adjacent to the doctors surgery on Central park. Over the next few weeks we will complete our improvement plan for this area when the final section has membrane and gravel laid.

7. Once you have worked over the soil for the first time obtain a load of horse sheep or goat manure and spread it deeply over the areas which will be your main planting areas and work it into the partially prepared soil.

In People's Park the northern end has now been completely cleared and the existing trees and shrubs have all been pruned and trimmed. We now intend to lay membrane and gravel in between the plants to make this area much more maintenance free. We will also be introducing some new benches to create a new permanent seating area. Finally we are please to announce that in conjunction with the businesses at the commercial centre, Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group will be holding a summer fair on 16th July. We already have over 25 stalls, a fashion show organised and a variety of entertainment throughout the evening, so please put the date in your diary and come along to what is sure to be a great community event.

Ten top tips to make gardening in Spain easier 1. Don’t walk on soil that will be used for planting things, especially after rain, as this will only consolidate the soil and make dried out red clay soils even harder

3. As soon as possible join these future terrace areas with strips of plastic covered with stone chippings to provide dry pathways even when it rains. 4 . Aim to have to work the minimum of soil into beds for plantings. 5. Once you have completed this initial lay out wander round it and look at the emerging network of paths and terraces aesthetically and decide where the directions, widths and shapes could be improved to make the garden more interesting. 6. Recognise that working consolidated Spanish soil for the first time, especially after a long hot summer is not kind to backs especially if you set out to use English style tools. Go out and buy yourself a set of mattocks to use instead of a spade and fork for most tasks including digging planting holes and weeding.

8. The greatest disturbances to partially prepared soils will be the making of planting holes for trees, so make these as soon as the weather and soil conditions allow even if you don’t intend to plant trees until next spring. When we first decided where to plant trees we were still only visiting the property for holidays so preparations and plantings had to be carefully phased. So starting at Easter and through the summer holidays we dug planting holes after any thunder storms that occurred. The holes were then filled with green kitchen waste and weeds as temporary mini compost heaps which had rotted down within six months to be then be worked into the bottom of the planting holes. All the trees planted into holes prepared this way grew well. 9. When you start to lay the final surfaces to terraces and paths slope them so that future rain water is directed and transported to where most required. 10. If it has not rained and none is expected for a while dampen soil before attempting to work it or don’t start until heavy rain has fallen. Hard soil like golf can cause debilitating back aches that have ruined many gardening and retirement plans.

Snakes alive!! On 23rd March, 22 members, and one guest, met up at the Lorca Club de Golf for the monthly stapleford competition. After two days of rain on the preceding days, the sun finally came out as the groups set off from the first tee. Lorca as usual was in tip top condition, and the second hole here is always a test of driving skills, and ruins many a member’s card. As Norrie Bull and his playing partners approached the bunker on hole 5, they spied what they thought was a snake skin that had been shed, but to their amazement it suddenly began to move and leave its sunny position. Being totally fearless they carried on as the snake disappeared. Later in the day with research having been carried out, consensus was that it was a Horseshoe Whipsnake, and is an endangered species due to lack of habitat. However, despite all, the cards checked when we returned to the clubhouse and the following result was declared, and

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS As the 2015/16 season entered its final stages Mazarron FC remained in a playoff position in fourth place but with just two points to spare over the teams just outside the top six. Most of the top teams went through sticky patches in March and April and with just six games left at the time of going to press there was everything to play for. The top two teams are promoted automatically and the next four teams play off to decide one further promotion place. Mazarron were, of course, promoted via the play offs last season and it would be a tremendous achievement if they could repeat that this season. Injuries and suspensions tested the depth of the squad in recent weeks with seven players missing for the away game at Molina which ended in a goalless draw. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The ex-pat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. If you have not been to a game before why not pop along to the Estadio Municipal in Mazarron for one of the remaining home games. With the closure of the jetty at CTD by the Spanish Costas, a change in the race management was forced upon SAMM. Their new Whaly support boat had to be used as a Committee Boat with a rib loaned by the Shoestring Group in the support role.

Despite this, on Sunday April 24th, there were two exciting races in near perfect conditions. In the first 6 lap race the three Balaton Group boats ‘Conny’, a Balaton 18, ‘Mistral’ and ‘Sirocco’, both Sailfish 18’s were neck and neck over the line and fighting it out all the way. The Hartley ran a steady course, as did ‘Shoestring Cuatro’, a Gamba. Just before the finish ‘Conny’ was baulked by ‘Sirocco’ who got into irons right in front of her whilst trying to

Property, Financial and Legal Taxman turns attention to hidden internet property rentals Spain’s Tax Agency is targeting the owners of apartments who placed rental ads last year – including those on specialized websites such as Airbnb – in a crackdown on unreported income. With the 2015 income tax drive now officially underway, taxpayers who use the new online tax filing program, Renta Web, may find the following message on their computer screen : “According to data in the Tax Agency’s power, you have placed property rental ads in various media, including the internet.” The note is a reminder that any income from such rentals must be declared, in the same way as income from foreign pension schemes or other foreign assets. The agency’s management director, Rufino de la Rosa, has not explained how the Tax Agency has obtained rental data, noting only that popular real estate websites such as Idealista or

Property, Financial and Legal Spain’s Sabadell posts 44% profit jump boosted by TSB purchase Spain’s fifth-biggest lender Banco Sabadell on Friday started to reap the fruits of its acquisition last year of British peer TSB as first-quarter net profit jumped 44% from the same period in 2015, widely beating analysts’ forecasts. One of the most acquisitive bank during the financial crisis, Sabadell has also benefited from a sharp rebound of the country’s real estate market which has enabled it to set aside less money to cover for bad loans and boosted earnings at its property unit. Net profit came in at 252 million euros, beating a Reuters forecast of 215 million euros, while net interest income, or profit from loans minus funding costs, rose 51% to 974 million euros. Excluding TSB, which has been consolidated in Sabadell’s earnings since Q3 of last year, net profit and net interest income would have been up 9% and 8.2% respectively.

House prices up in 2015 The end-of-year market report for 2015 from the General Council of Notaries reveals that house prices and sales rose in almost all autonomous regions last year, though the figures also showed a slowdown in the last quarter.

HOME SALES Home sales increased in every autonomoous region last year with the exception of Castille-La Mancha, a landlocked region that does not benefit from foreign demand. Nationally, sales were up 9.2% last year, the second year of recovery in sales, but down from the 20.7% increase clocked up in 2014. On an annualised basis, sales rose by 5.2% in Q1, 16.3% in Q2, 17% in Q3, and just 0.8% in Q4, so sales growth slowed dramatically at the end of the year. However, the latest figures from the notaries show sales back on the up and up in the first two months of this year.

There is no way we can have the intimacy we once had while this odor is there. It makes me sick to go near him. What’s going on? I know you’ve said your husband smells even after showing, but what is he doing in the shower to clean himself? If he’s uncircumcised, is he pulling his foreskin back and cleaning thoroughly in and around all the skin folds? Bacteria will collect here and if not washed thoroughly every day will lead to exactly this issue. You know what we men are like, always half a job!!! In either case, circumcised or not, it’s possible he has a yeast infection. Normally with good hygiene these things do settle down but he could try Canesten cream to see if things improve. Urine infections can also cause odor but those are usually accompanied by other symptoms, like having to pee a lot, or pain when peeing. What I would say that if it’s not a medical issue , but rather a hygiene thing, then I would try and sort it by, say, hopping into the shower with him and cleaning him yourself. Not in a sort of harsh way with a green scorer or a Brillo pad, but make it sexy. Charity corner Our Spring/Summer Fashion Show, held at the Club House on Monday 11th April, was again a great success thanks the enormous support we have from all the ladies that come along to enjoy the afternoon and go away with some good bargains for their wardrobe. We were able with their help to raise 1002 euros. Thanks must as always go to Daniel Wheatley, who voluntarily provides the music, and to Peter Smith who also voluntarily gives his time and expertise in taking the photos. would not be one. A big round of applause for our beautiful models, all of whom are involved with the charity and ‘strut their stuff’ in order to raise much needed funds for our cause! Janet has been with the charity from its outset and we would all like to thank her for taking up the post to enable us to carry on our good work. Camposol urbanisation near Mazarrón is very fortunate to have a group of volunteers who respond to calls for assistance when a medical emergency arises on the urbanisation. The responders can give life saving treatment and comfort to casualties and family members until the medical services arrive. Unfortunately the service had to be suspended in December 2015 due to the discovery that they were not operating within the Spanish regulations for medical emergencies. Since then the committee have been tirelessly working to reinstate the service to Camposol. The FAST 2016 committee are now confident that we can soon continue the service. The Murcian Health Authority have all the documents needed to give the go ahead. Once the permission to proceed has been given, FAST 2016 will be back responding to medical emergencies 24 hours a day 7 days a week for residents and visitors to Camposol. Training of responders has been continuing during the period that the service has been withdrawn. New responders have been recruited and will play an important role once their training has been completed. Part of that training includes scenarios to enable the responders to practice their skills out on the urbanisation in realistic situations. During the month of May the FAST 2016 vehicles and responders will be seen around Camposol responding to these training scenarios. Fund raising by the supporters has continued to allow the service to be funded. The bookstall on the 2nd and last Friday of the month outside Euronics on B commercial centre The FAST 2016 May Fair at Mariano’s Restaurant on Camposol will be held on the 28TH May from 11.00 to 15.00. There will be the normal traders, along with a cake stall, Tombola, Jams and Chutneys. The famous Prize Draw with fantastic prizes. The fair raises much needed funds to allow the organisation to provide this valued service to residents and visitors to Camposol. Well that’s another month gone and just where did that go? AAR has been so busy. Adoptions, rescues, rehomings, puppies, mamas, yes now we have another mama and her puppies with us. She was dumped outside a campsite with what we thought were 2 puppies but ohhh no, there were 4!! So that puts a total of 12 puppies under 8 weeks in our care. I don’t think that is too bad to say we are primarily an Equine Charity! This little girl is very protective of her babies who are under a week old. They are going to be small dogs and will be up for adoption with their mother, take a look at our FB page to follow their progress. Blow me down the same morning a galgo was brought to our attention with the most appalling injury to her leg. The wound was so large it couldn’t be stitched, she is now doing well, and will also be up for adoption. Our work is relentless and the problem is not getting any better. We really are full to bursting at the moment and are always on the lookout for potential foster carers to help out in the interim. Great news about Lucie and her 8 puppies who are doing just great. We only have 2 left to re-home. One has already left and been re-homed locally. Good luck little Eddie it has been a pleasure and thank you to his adopters. However, I know, I know, but how could I resist this little bundle of fluffiness and she is mine!! Little Africa caught my eye from day one, so she is going to stay here with me and all her big brothers and sisters! There is so much to report this month, but just not enough space and time! An update on Princess Narlia!! Well she is still here with us a month after the vet in the UK wanted to euthanise her. Such a happy girl, still poorly, but so happy and playful and definitely holding her own. We are keeping everything crossed for this special girl, we know every day is a bonus. Love her soooo much. I cant finish this article without mentioning the donkeys. My beautiful, loyal, bolshy, playful, cheeky donkeys still need rehoming. They are all doing really well, if anyone is interested in these amazing creatures then please get in touch with me. They make wonderful companions for almost any animal. The stable door is firmly shut at the moment until I can rehome some of them and make space. Come and take a look in our shops, we how have an abundance of summer clothing at great prices. As usual I will be on Camposol B Car Park on Mondays between 11.30-1.30pm where you can drop off any donations or visit one of our shops either in Roldan or in Mazarron Town opposite the Medical Centre, where donations can also be dropped off 10.302pm.

This month I am going to re-iterate what Camposol Kitty Kitty was set up for and try to explain how TNR works…. Trap, Neuter Return (TNR) is widely recognized as the most humane and effective strategy for reducing feral cat populations. TNR involves humanely trapping feral cats living in towns and rural areas and transporting them to a vet where they are spayed/neutered. Here they also receive a health check, and can be treated for routine medical conditions. After surgery, the cat is then returned back to his colony habitat where caring individuals provide food, water and shelter. Why Does Trap and Kill Not Work? Animal control agencies will tell you that trap and kill is the only way to control the unwanted cat population and they have proceeded to kill all feral cats that they can. The fact is that after almost 100 years of killing there are still feral cats. Isn’t that proof enough? Why doesn’t it work? Removing cats from an area only allows another colony to move into its place. Essentially you would have to trap and kill everywhere, all at once, to catch all the cats. The TNR option allows you to stabilize one area at a time. Once the cat population of a colony is stabilized, the colony will defend its territory and keep other cats from moving in. Working one area at a time allows you to clean up entire regions, because all food sources will be utilized for sterilized cats. To many people, killing the feral cats is not acceptable. Many people, especially the elderly living alone, welcome the company of the cats each day. Others rely on the cats for rodent control in places such as on farms etc. Without a trap, neuter and return program these people have no alternative but to let the cats continue to breed. Why Trap, Neuter, and Return (TNR) Works TNR works only if entire colonies are stabilized. Trapping 95% of the cats in a colony will not stabilize the colony. By stabilizing entire colonies at each food source, ultimately all food sources will be used for sterilized cats. Unsterilized cats without food sources will not survive. All sterilized cats have marked left ears. This makes it possible for caretakers to differentiate between cats that have already been sterilized vs. the ones that have not been sterilized yet. After reading this… I am hoping to appeal to the people on A sector, Camposol that insist on continuing to feed the ferals cats on the car park/palm tree near the Indian and hope that they heed our pleas to please STOP feeding the cats until we have managed to catch and manage the colony again… once stabalised we welcome the help with feeding, but while there are sick and pregnant cats around that are not part of the managed colony we really need to be able to take control – that can only happen if we have a managed feeding program to enable us to trap and neuter.
