JOURNAL

THE

Dear Reader, Welcome to the November edition of “The Journal”. Things have certainly been busy here at Journal Towers. It’s been a year since Danny from Insignia Graphics joined our team and breathed new life into the design and look of the magazine. This last year has been phenomenally successful for us here at The Journal. Not only does the magazine look great, but we have grown massively and now print more copies and distribute further and wider than ever before. We are also the only magazine in the region that delivers over 1,000 copies each and every month direct to our readers e-mail inbox, enabling people to enjoy the magazine wherever they are in the world. We would like to say a massive thank you to all our readers and advertisers for their continued support in making The Journal the best community magazine available. We will continue to work hard to make the magazine even better over this coming year. October was quite a month and there is certainly no shortage of local news to report on! Our intrepid reporter Rod Sawyer has been out and about keeping his finger on the pulse of the situation regarding the bridge and access road on Camposol, and you can read his findings in this month’s magazine. Time flies when you’re having fun and can you believe that its almost Christmas time again?! If like me you are planning on doing as little cooking this year as possible then be sure to check out the Bar and Restaurant guide where you can find the best places to book for your Xmas lunch! Enjoy this month’s magazine, and remember when you contact an advertiser be sure to tell them that you saw their advert in “The Journal” See you in December, Robert Rutherford

Enjoy the Camposol District Journal like never before!

November 11 - Remembrance Sunday

Recessional God of our fathers, known of old— Lord of our far-flung battle line— Beneath whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine— Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget—lest we forget! The tumult and the shouting dies— The Captains and the Kings depart— Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart. Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget—lest we forget! Far-called our navies melt away— On dune and headland sinks the fire— Lo, all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Nineveh and Tyre! Judge of the Nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget—lest we forget! If, drunk with sight of power, we loose Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe— Such boastings as the Gentiles use, Or lesser breeds without the Law— Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget—lest we forget! For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard— All valiant dust that builds on dust, And guarding calls not Thee to guard. For frantic boast and foolish word, Thy Mercy on Thy People, Lord! Amen.

Many countries across the world hold November 11th. as a day of remembrance. Most of them have adopted the 2 minute silence to be observed at the eleventh hour, g.m.t., often in the open air, in parks and public spaces. Camposol joined in this tradition holding the first open air service 5 years ago, in front of the memorial garden in Parque Los Palacios (Camposol A). It is an important feature of this day that at that time people all across the world stand in silence at exactly the same time to remember. Here in Spain that time is 12 noon, which means that the service starts at 11-30 a.m. local time. This service differs slightly from the British Remembrance Sunday, which is dedicated to the armed forces, in that this service is an opportunity for all people, from all nations to come together in respect for all their departed loved ones, not just those unfortunate to have fallen in so many wars. There will be no laying of wreaths, instead people are asked to gift a living plant, which will be planted in the park as a sign of hope for the future. Many people already have plants dedicated to loved ones. Many more people enjoy the beauty of this quiet garden. This year November 11th falls on a Sunday. The Ex-servicemen’s Association, who normally hold a Remembrance Sunday Service on Camposol have combined that service with the one in the park. They will provide small wooden crosses and poppies for those who would like them. Their chairman will read the traditional poem ending with “We will remember them”. A live trumpet will sound “The Last Post”, which signals the start of the 2 minute silence. The service will be conducted by Pastor Andrew, and the singers from Wellspring Victory Church. At the end of the service (aprox. 12:15) he will invite those with plants or crosses to place them in the memorial garden. In previous years we have been lucky with the weather. In the unlikely event that we have British weather this year, the service can still go ahead, thanks to the Camposol Fiesta Committee, who have made a small tent available to protect the equipment. You will still need to bring your own umbrella, and chair. The church singers will continue to sing hymns both during and after the gifting in the memorial garden. Anyone wishing to stay, or join in, will be made welcome. Los Palacios Garden Volunteers are proud that our park is such a suitable venue for this event. We hope that as many people as possible enjoy, and appreciate the ongoing hard work necessary to provide it. New helpers are always needed. We have also lost some of our dedicated workers recently. We will remember them.

Palm House Orphanage Cambodia

Approximately 16 years ago a British lady founded this orphanage after witnessing the plight of orphaned children many who had lost their parents to aids, or parents who had sold them into prostitution to fall victim to paedophiles. As the fear of aids grows the paedophiles are using younger and younger children to reduce the risk of aids. Some children were used by drug barons as boy soldiers to protect their drug producing land. (Some boys are known to have killed by the time they are 7 years old.) much work is being done to save these children. Clifford Jay & Julia who are members of the Wellspring Victory church in Puerto de Mazarron and who have

entertained in the area for the last 10 Years approximately, have been organising musical evenings in various venues in the port of Mazarron to raise funds for the Palm House Orphanage over the last 9 to 10 Years, raising much needed money to help a little with the great needs of these abandoned children. Once again Clifford Jay & Julia are organising a charity night at The Hotel Playa Grande, Puerto de Mazarron on the 8th of November 2012, 7.30pm Til late. Tapas and drinks can be purchased at the bar. And there will be a raffle, with worthwhile prizes to be won. Tickets are available from Yorkshire Linen (Above Mercadona Puerto De Mazarron) and The Hotel Playa Grande reception. Or pay at the door on the night.

Ley de Costas Reformed The Government has now approved changes to the 1988 Ley de Costas (the rules governing buildings within the coastal limits) and the new Proyecto de Ley de Protección y Uso Sostenible del Litoral. Private homes may remain within coastal limits for up to 75 years and beach-bars and commercial properties will now enjoy extendable four-year licences. Other illegal buildings (in reference primarily to the Hotel Algarrobico) will be demolished (there is a Government estimate of 7.2 million euros for the demolition, ‘once the court process has been concluded’). The Government say the new rules will, ‘Better protect the coast against urban excess and will generate confidence and

fresh economic activity.’ The unwieldy named Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente) note that the new rules will ‘save 10,000 buildings currently threatened with demolition which are within the Maritime Zone, of which 1,100 would have been listed for demolition by 2018.’ Minister Miguel Arias Cañete said, ‘Such a massive demolition of homes would not help Spain’s image abroad.’ Existing buildings will not be allowed to increase in size

and there will be some modest new controls will be implemented for beach use and its protection. Ecologists, particularly Greenpeace, WWF and Ecologistas en Acción, have been quick to criticise these new rules.

Council meets the locals!

A packed room with many standing greeted three of the four Councilors who constitute the leadership at the town hall, Paco Garcia, head of PSOE and deputy mayo, Gines Camanillo the mayor, and David Fernandez, the councilor responsible for convening the meetings. The meeting last three hours and allowed all who wanted to, to ask questions, often accompanied by a speech! There was a vociferous group of young Spanish who attacked the mayor and raised many issues.

Bob Owen, chair of the CRA did question the communications of the Council, telling them that there had been no meetings and no information given out about the bridge. This left Camposol wide open to speculation and rumour. He pointed out that the CRA could print thousands of leaflets and get them round very quickly, as they had with the interview with Murcia Today. Many at the meeting were very unhappy with the new road which has replaced the emergency one. This road is too long, dangerous and potentially lethal in any wet weather. The mayor declared that the work would take one month from the date of signing the contract but gave no indication of

page 8

when that would be. He did argue that it takes two months to put together a scheme. He also pointed out that the overall cost of the storm was likely to be 8 million Euros.(of which 900,000 is the Camposol bridge). They are applying for the cash to central government. He also indicated that it was possible for emergency vehicles to use the bridge, but again did not mention how this would operate; who would tell the ambulances for example. The bridge was the main topic, but

the problems of the infrastructure on Camposol were brought up. As were issues on A. A shrug greeted the news that vehicles, one of which had been photographed were ignoring the instructions and were using the bridge. The Councilors were left in no doubt at the strength of feeling on the issue. They were challenged about the difficulties

www.thecamposoljournal.com

faced by business’s, not just on Camposol, but in the port as well. This was followed up by the charities who also pointed out their difficulties, from dealing with clients to fundraising. Suggestions were also made about the school bus which it was felt should extend its stop to the bridge. The mayor did promise to look at this. The big announcement was that the town Hall propose to take responsibility for the whole of Camposol at a meeting with MASA on the 16th October. Jose Navarro of the CRA, was able to speak and commented on line “When it was finally my turn for questions, I pointed out that in the plan parcial and in the catastro, the D11-RM315 road can be seen as “public domain”. I gave Mr García a copy of the catastral evidence. They were speechless for a moment and then they excused themselves stating they were following technician’s instructions, and that the Town Hall does not even have a registry of public roads. They have promised they will look into it tomorrow, and will open the first emergency road if correct.” Rod Sawyer

CAFÉ CONCERT 2012-10-13

The sixth annual CAFÉ Concert was held this year at the Playa Grande Hotel and attracted an audience of some 300 people, with a full capacity, despite the problems of people from Camposol not being able to easily access their exits. 5 very different acts gave of their musical talents and thanks to all those who participated. The Concert was so enjoyable in the Playa Grande that immediately the venue has been booked for next years Concert. The money is still being assembled but it looks as though it will top 2000Euros to add to the existing 41000 Euros held at the bank. The target for an additional ambulance is 60,000 Euros so we are almost at the three quarter stage and with a few more donations and maybe a couple of concerts we can get there quickly. The need for an additional ambulance was reinforced when the recent floods brought into use every ambulance and emergency vehicle in the area. Remember this is an additional ambulance, not a replacement. The raffle still has some unclaimed prizes White tickets 117 and 782. Green Tickets758 and 271, Blue 870 and480 and Yellow 356 and 451. Dear Rod I would like to respond to your comments in last months journal re the UK’s continued membership of the EC.

to the EC. Budget. France is supposed to be a net contributor but recovers most of her contribution in spurious agricultural subsidies.

In any discussion of Britain’s membership of Europe the facts are rarely on display. So in order that this discussion proceeds on the basis of good information I set out below some inescapable facts.

The disastrous Edward Heath told British voters that Britain would be able to exploit the EC in a massive increase in British trade. The reality has been that the Europeans have exploited British industry with disastrous results. Incidentally, Britain receives less than 2% of its massive contribution back as Euro aid to certain projects. Rod says in his article last month that a removal of Britain from the EC would be a disaster for ex-pats. I believe that remaining in the EC will mean the certain extinction of the UK as a major trading nation in the long run, with far more savage effects on the ex-pat.

British trade with Europe has declined each year since we joined the EC A massive 35% inbalance in favour of Europe has developed over that period. (British Statistical Office.) In that trend Britain has lost its Machine Tool Industry, its Steel Industry and a significant section of its manufacturing industry. A large part of our utility supply is now also in European hands. The loss of each of these industries taking with them thousands of jobs (Perhaps millions of jobs). British membership of the union costs us an £8 Billion membership fee. This figure could have provided a new hospital in most major towns in Britain or largely removed the defense bill from the back of our taxpayers. Britain and Germany are the only significant net contributors

2012

Britain is also at a disadvantage in its cultural attitude to law, if Europe decides on a measure at Brussels and the proposal is voted into law, then Britain ensures that that law is scrupulously adhered to in the UK. The French on the other hand whilst prepared to sign anything will only implement that which they perceive is in their national interest.

There are those who say leaving the EC would mean the end of trade options in Europe. Such an unintelligent view has to be put aside. Britain is one of the largest importers of German Cars,( I believe probably the third biggest market). Germany can not afford to lose that market (Germany is over dependant on auto exports) and should Britain leave the market the Germans would stand on their head in reciprocal trading to ensure that market was protected. Similarly Britain is one of France’s biggest agricultural and wine importers and dearly as the French would like to cut us off without a penny they would also be obliged to enter into reciprocal trade agreements. Finally the biggest market is outside Europe and in 2011 we exported more to the rest of the world than we did to Europe. I believe that Britain should leave the EC as soon as possible and with its remaining import strength ensure that the tariff barrier to British products remains largely unchanged. Thus we would be in what many Brits thought they were voting for originally viz. A free Trade Area. Tom Finnegan

The Rains in Spain and the UK stay mainly on the plain!

This year the rains hit the UK and Spain. I had the misfortune to drive through York on the Monday of the rains, and around Mazarron on the Friday! The weather in the north of England was spectacular; driving was very hazardous, with spray obscuring windscreen, bridges closed and roads like the A659 impassable. York was very lucky, if the army had not put in two layers of sand bags then at least 2000 houses would have flooded. In the aftermath, insurance premiums have rocketed, with the insurance companies designating as high risk many properties which are for example, at the tops of hills! But have the same post code as properties genuinely at risk at the bottom. Deaths were restricted to two in Wales. This was the UK’s Gota Fria, a condition in Spain when cold air over the mainland collides with hot air from the Mediterranean, heated by a long hot summer. In Spain, the whole of the south suffered, with Murcia right in the middle of it. Mazarron got off lightly compared to Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras, which had 120 and 210 litres of rain respectively! Mazarron had about 60. The key to Mazarron was the rambla through Camposol which bypasses Mazarron and enters the sea at Bolnuevo,

page 12

where in the past the camp site has suffered badly.. This was the recipient of flood water from dams at Totana which had to open their sluice gates. In Lorca the Puentes dam held initially 5,1 hectometres of water, by the time the rain stopped it topped 20! This was why the CHS, the Confederacion Hidrogradfica de Segura, initiated the emergency plan. Although Town Halls had already been warned of the possibility of this happening. When this wall of water hit Camposol, the bridge suffered. Altogether there were at least 10 deaths, but there are still two missing. These included an English woman swept away and drowned. Most of the deaths occurred as a result of drivers and passengers being trapped in cars. There were countless animal deaths, sheep, cattle and pigs. One report said that one town hall had cleared some 200 tons of carcasses. The bridge at Camposol was the main problem locally. It is the Water Authority which is responsible and indeed owns the ramblas. Rules are very strict, no dumping, no building and the Authority keeps a beady eye on all culverts and water courses. On Camposol this affects us in two ways, the drainage on D, where the position is well known, and judgments have been made about various options, from better culver ting upwards. The main rambla with the bridge is part

www.thecamposoljournal.com

of the network of dry beds used by the Authority as run offs. These are of long standing. Hundreds died in the nineteenth century, so the need to safeguard dams, and the village and towns became very evident. When it looks as though dams and lakes are going to be overfull, then sluices are raised and water run off. If they didn’t take this action then the consequences could be unthinkable. However the sluices are not just raised, Town Halls likely to be affected are contacted so they can make their own arrangements. Mazarron was contacted on the Friday, but received its warning on Thursday. Early Friday evening, the bridge was inspected by the local police, Councilors Pepe Gomez, councilor for foreigners, and Paco Garcia, the deputy leader and head of PSOE locally. They met up fortuitously with Les Crook, vice chair of the CRA. The result of the inspection was the closure of the bridge initially to all traffic, vehicles and pedestrian. Later this was lifted for pedestrians. Surveys the following day revealed that the bridge and its surrounds are unsafe. Almost immediately the Councilors negotiated with the farmer above D for a temporary road through the tomato fields and vineyards. By Sunday morning a way off for C and D Camposol had been provided. A more permanent solution through C has since been mooted

NEWS

and proposed. This is quite an achievement, though does beg the question of why the bridge was left to the mercy of a gota fria, when it had been damaged months ago. The Town Hall has argued that it has taken months to sort out proposals and contracts, which will now have to be done again. In terms of ownership, it is the CHS which is responsible for the bridge. They accepted that from MASA. The rains on Mazarron did result in mud slides, ramblas full of flood water, but the port did not suffer in the way it did a few years back, and on D on Camposol, water did sweep down road many inches deep, but the urbanization again did not suffer as it did when the drains were blocked on D. In comparison, further inland presents a desolate picture, its not just dead animals, but whole crops destroyed, with many village and isolated farm houses flooded out and virtually ruined. The road system has been ravaged in some areas, a bridge going in Lorca, but many roads with tarmac distorted by the water and made impassable. This is essentially what happened on Camposol. Graphic pictures appeared on Spanish TV, but also on British TV, where Zoe Cooper, of Murcia Today, featured on both radio and TV as a local correspondent. One complaint that most journalists have had locally is that the Town Hall has been very reticent in terms of reporting its actions. This reticence did result in postings on the internet from irate residents, some in the UK, who wanted to know what the Council was doing. Les Crook did sterling work damping down the rumours and reporting Council action. There has still been no press release from the Town Hall. The Junta also afforded Murcia Today with an interview which has been extensively reported. On Camposol, residents have pulled together. Friends have made informal pacts to get people from C and D to A and B. It is now possible to get a car off C and D, but it is a 7 mile excursion to get round to the rest of Camposol. Some have ignored the road block on the bridge; see the photograph of one van which was taken as it broke through the cordon. There is now a train going round C and D and delivering to the bridge, with another train on the other side. There are

2012

queues of cars, parked, either side of the bridge. It has of course left the hotel and the gold course isolated. Getting a coach across the fields is no mean feat. Javier on the Saturday morning with a colleague was at the bridge loading fresh linen for the hotels onto trolleys. This will cost the hotel and golf course clients they can ill afford to lose. Will it encourage MASA to dig into its pockets to help out? The deputy mayor has made it clear that the bridge must be a priority. In the UK the bridge which separates the two halves of Tadcaster was out for a week, but at least there were other ways to access the two halves, in Camposol’s case, there was only the bridge. Originally it was planned to have a back road out. This fell on the failure of negotiations with the local farmer. Given the fact that some have behaved like boy racers on the new track, and worse still, others have stolen fruit on their way across, it is easy to understand his point of view. Access through the pig farm has been mooted. This apparently has a public right of way, almost certainly an agricultural road. These roads criss cross Spain and are meant to enable the movement of herds of sheep and other livestock. They are often simply graveled. A tarmacked road would provide an alternative access, even though it will become quicker to motor to Mazarron and Pareton that the rest of Camposol. The bridge will take a month to repair. One or two cars and vans have already crossed it. The council needs to be aware that patience is not a Camposol virtue! Especially in a situation which need not have come about in the first place. Les Crook posted this on one site! “Just got back from Mazarron Port.

Went out on the road from D 11 but on our return journey Police were closing this road and directing traffic to the new road joining Camposol at D 7 by the compost pits. This new road is narrower, longer with dangerous blind bends and at the point where one should turn left for Camposol there is no sign to indicate the route. There was confusion at this point and it’s only that one can just see some houses on D7 that we new when to turn. This route is much longer, much dustier and has several bends where much care should be taken. I don’t know why this route has been made in preference to the D11 route but I can only surmise it might be a safety issue for the farm workers or the Farmer is upset by people stealing his produce. Anyone out there know why this change has occurred because, for sure, the Council haven’t told us.(ie CRA)” By the time you read this we are sure that there will have been further developments on this topic, lets just hope that they are positive ones! MABS Mazarrón Is On the Move

It is now almost a year since MABS Cancer Support Group opened their Information Centre in Mazarrón. During that time their presence has been an overwhelming success, so much so that they can no longer operate effectively from their present location or manage their busy equipment loan service from its location elsewhere on Camposol. was obvious from both a financial and practical perspective that the situation needed to change. It was a tall order to find another location that could accommodate all of their requirements: private counselling space, equipment store and office facilities but, after an intensive search, they were delighted to be offered a Neptuno villa on sector B on a long-term rental. The new MABS Centre is on Avenida de los Covachos and is ideally situated to serve the patients and families of MABS Mazarrón. MABS is extremely grateful to the owners, who have been so generous, helpful and supportive.

Boxing Gala, Saturday 24th of November

A Grand Opening is planned for Saturday, 3

November at 12 noon, combined with a Winter Fair, and all are welcome to attend. MABS volunteers and helpers have rolled up their sleeves to complete the repairs and decorating needed to get the new MABS Centre ready in time. Discussions are taking place with the Camposol Gardening Groups to help get the garden cleared and a new path laid. “We’re naturally very excited about this new stage in the development of services to everyone affected by cancer in the Mazarrón area” remarked MABS Co-ordinator, Zue Burgess. In addition to the advice and information that is currently available, the new Centre will provide private counselling services and house a comprehensive range of hospital equipment which is used to assist patients who are being nursed at home. If you would like to find out more or you would like to offer your help with the current refurbishment, please give MABS a call on 620 582 418

Dawn Llewellyn-Price

So, what will you be doing for the last seven weeks of your life? Because as of today, that’s pretty much all we have left, if you believe the 2012-ers. Yes, December 21st according to the ancient Mayans, is Doomsday, End Game, Armageddon, Annihilation, Toes-up time. The end of the thirteenth B’ak’tun and all it means to us, according to the Mesoamerican long count calendar. You know the one we all find in dusty old tomes. There are plenty of people who believe passionately that this event is coming. They’ve studied the signs, read all the books, bought all the underground shelters. They’re mostly Americans, of course, who believe anything written in ancient stone, even when half of it has vanished and there’s barely a soul left who can still read the glyphs and make sense out of them.

Damn, double damn. I just ordered a load of personalised calendars to give as Christmas gifts. Maybe I can get a refund if I’m quick? We can all forget the expensive present shopping, and spend the money on fine dining and emptying the bodegas of wine, drink too many Mojitos and not give a care about all those health risks associated with the half bag of sugar which seems to go in every glass. Those thoughtful Mayans even gave us till midnight, so the party can get started before the fireworks cover the sky. You can tell the Spanish must have been involved at some point to allow fireworks at midnight, for they were the ones who burned all the tree bark scrolls containing all the vital information that would have explained it all to us. Shame, that. So what’s going to bring our alleged end? An enormous asteroid may just suddenly pop out from behind the moon and head straight for us. (Where’s Bruce Willis

page 18

when you need him? Advertising Sky TV.) Or even a planet called Nibiru. Or a giant flare from the sun, which will knock out all our communications and apparently set fire to everything with the electrical fields it produces. It could be man-made with nuclear explosions. Best keep a beady eye on Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Maybe a tidal wave of empty plastic bottles will wash over us, who knows?

the onset of the rainy season. If you manage to spot the little cluster of stars known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters (there are actually many more stars in the cluster) have a look at them through binoculars or a low power telescope as they look spectacular. However, as the most favorable time to observe Taurus in the night sky is during the months of December and January we’ll revisit Taurus again later.

We could even fall into a giant black hole. The rambla springs to mind here, but pointless worrying about the bridge now,-if the mayor believes then its common sense why any repairs are slow to commence. They know, you know. For my part, I’m going to ignore the ads for a doomsday shelter…having seen inside it’s not something I could live in for the year needed to survive a cataclysmic end. Tinned beans in an enclosed metal tube? Ahem. Even the free bible won’t convince me it’s the way forward. Plus, by the time we managed to get a small works licence permit to dig the hole, it would all be over and done with. Maybe the Ayuntamiento really do know something we don’t…?

Stars over Camposol

with Keith Jackson

During November the winter constellations continue to rise in the Eastern, and by 10:30ish in the evening the constellations of Taurus and Auriga should be visible around 30 to 40 degrees above the horizon and getting higher as time moves on. Taurus is perhaps the easier of the two to spot as its leading star, the red giant Aldebaran, is fairly distinctive and, the fact that for several months, Jupiter (the brightest object in the vicinity) will be in close proximity and should make Taurus difficult to miss. On the first, second, twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth the moon will also be in close proximity and will probably wash out most of Taurus. Aldabaran, the eye of the bull, is part of a V-shaped group of stars called the Hyades which have long been associated with rainy weather, no doubt because they rise in the autumn and often herald

www.thecamposoljournal.com

The constellation Auriga is said to resemble the shape of a charioteer’s pointed helmet and indeed gets its name from the Latin word for Charioteer. Auriga can be found to the left of Taurus but can be a little more difficult to spot, so, look out for the bright star Capella and the little triangular asterism know as the Kids. In Greek mythology, Auriga is sometimes identified with Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and craftsmen, who invented the chariot. Another suggestion is that the constellation represents Erichthoneus, the lame son of Hephaestus and Mother Earth. In this story Erichthoneus invented the four horse chariot so that he could get around more easily. This invention so impressed the God Zeus, that he placed Erichthoneus and his chariot in the heavens. The leading star in Auriga is the yellow giant star Capella which is similar to our own sun, but much larger. It is part of a binary star system with a red giant star. The two orbit around each other once every 104 days. The name Capella is from Latin, and translates into English as a small female goat. Capella traditionally marks the left shoulder of the charioteer, or, according to the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, the goat that the charioteer is carrying. No surprise then that traditionally, many illustrations of Auriga represent it as a chariot with the charioteer holding a goat over his left shoulder and the kids under his left arm.

Out and About

With Rod Sawyer

It’s the last rays of summer, the pool is now 22 degs, a bit cold, the sea is warmer and we have spent some pleasant mornings swimming down at Isla Plana, retiring to a Menu del Dia at lunch time. We did have expectations of Restaurant Nono, a lovely courtyard restaurant, plenty of ambiance. At 12 Euros it is not cheap and although the service was OK, the food was again very average, bearing in mind the price. We had another rather dull, but edible experience at a restaurant which usually has excellent service and cuisine, but it really felt like the end of summer, the place wasn’t even crowded. We popped along to 7th Heaven for coffee and cakes; all cakes home made and a great variety. It super for afternoon tea or a late evening coffee, not to mention the upstairs BBQ terrace. We sat there on a warm and balmy late evening, on the side overlooking the bay and mountains, with a sweep of the Paseo in front. There were cars on the Paseo which seem to disappear part way along, a puzzle! One Menu del Dia which did measure up was that at Lagarto Verde with Age Concern. Their 10 Euro monthly deal is well worth and there were over 40 customers. They do rotate their outings both geographically and choose a variety of restaurants. The next one on October 31st is at Don Ricardos in Puerto Mazarron, 10 Euros as usual One very successful outing was the Friday morning walk by members of the congregation of St Nicholas Church. Some 19 took part with two snails (!) joining them for lunch! It started from the Saladillo Restaurant, lasted two hours and finished back there. Some twenty walkers, including one spaniel! The meal

wine. Bread, an individual salad as well as a choice of 7 first plates and 7 second [plates. Nobody was disappointed, a pork paella, consommé with meatballs, gazpacho all tickled the palate. The salad was a straightforward green salad with a boiled egg. Roasted chicken, pronounced excellent done in garlic and thyme, rabbit in garlic, beef in sauce, felt to be salty by one person, squid, grouper and of course sausage and chips. All the dishes came with hot well done chips! Desserts included rice pudding, cream caramel and ice cream. The service was superb given they were trying to feed some 21 all at the same time, with one person serving! A lot of service is down to the kitchen and our waitress was kept very busy keeping on top of the different offerings. So if you fancy getting out of the port, or off Camposol for a lunch time meal, then Saladillo comes recommended.

In our last article we focused on the circumstances surrounding some of the most important issues facing Camposol and in particularly the disappointment felt by the lack of any discernible progress in dealing with them. Oddly one month later and knowing what we know now it would even be preferable if we were at least able to report that it was a case of “as you

were”. Of course all the concerns we were contemplating that short time ago have, at least temporarily, been overshadowed by the issues surrounding the bridge closure. Anyone who witnessed the spectacle of the raging torrent that thundered through Camposol on the day in question would not be surprised to learn that further problems had occurred to the already ailing bridge approach roads. The CRA had for some time been expressing their concerns to the council regarding the likelihood of further deterioration occurring should the previously damaged and un-repaired section of the access road be exposed to the elements for too long. There was a request made to Councillor José Gómez (Pepe) that in the light of the state of the bridge and its problems, an access to Camposol from the road C-3315 should be provided ASAP. In all fairness after the bridge closure the council did in fact promptly arrange this facility in the form of a temporary hardcore surface, however this has since unexplainably been replaced with what is considered as a longer and inferior alternative. It has been reported in the media that this vital component in the urbanizations infrastructure is expected to be out of action for two months. It is not clear if the funding for the necessary repairs is available from council funds but as is likely it is not, in which case it will probably be considerably longer. Apparently the cash strapped Mazarron council are looking to recoup as much as possible of their estimated repair costs of €900,000 from various sources including the Confederación Hidrográfica who were primarily responsible for the extent of the deluge when to relieve the risk of flooding in other areas, they were required to divert a large volume of water into the Rambla de las Moreras. Although the presence at the scene of councillors such as Francisco García, Juan Miguel Munoz and Pepe Gómez made it possible for committee members Les Crook and José Navarro to obtain some information regarding the situation, not for the first time much was learnt from a media source who had been afforded the facility of an interview with our Mayor. This was also the case when in September we more or less stumbled on the highly significant fact that the agreement with developer Masa to complete the infrastructure had collapsed. The news of this happening, in fact the only news the CRA has obtained to date, came as a result of the efforts of one of our members who diligently trawls the internet for

We also popped into Bolnuevo which seemed to be very clean after the mud and rains. Everywhere was open, Mar Moy, which is soon to be undergoing a huge transformation, Monroes and Elliots all had custom. Was it last year or the year before when it seemed to take weeks for the village to recover from the rain? This year, a week after the event, Bolnuevo was very much open for business. Camposol does seem to be coping, reports suggest that day time A and B are pretty full, the diesel train doing sterling service, but friends picking up friends either side of the bridge, and lifts being offered. Evening is perhaps different. Certainly our friends were missing from the quiz at Tels on Tuesday night. However it is getting near the time when sitting outside is not an option. Its trips across checkpoint Charlie which are proving difficult. The new road does provide a real alternative to C and D when it comes to access the Port and Bolnuevo, but read Les Crooks report on it!!!! Rod sawyer

newsworthy items and came across a report of an interview with Mayor Ginés Campillo in the Spanish newspaper La Voz. It is disappointing that the Mayor elects to exclusively discuss events of such considerable significance with the media while at the same time leaving Camposol’s residents craving both information and support by not conferring with the organisation that represents a large proportion of those directly affected. Several requests for meetings with council representatives have gone unanswered and it is becoming ever more apparent that this administration is pursuing a policy of attempting to marginalise the CRA by funnelling any little dialogue there might be through the ineffective and infrequent Citizen Participation Council meetings. We have been informed that one of these meetings has been scheduled to take place a few days from compiling this article and it will be attended by Ginés Campillo, Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco García, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for infrastructure and Planning and David Fernández, Councillor for Citizen Participation and Environmental issues. The Council seem to be wheeling out the big guns but no mention of Pepe Gómez? Judging from many feelings expressed on the CRA website it could well be a lively occasion. Let’s hope what information we might gain is not too little but whatever, it certainly will be considered by the CRA as too late. The CRA AGM this year will be held at the Sensol Hotel on the 15th November at 10am. Proposals are welcome and should be submitted no later than 9am on Monday 5th November accompanied by a contact phone number and the member’s membership number. Part of this year’s meeting will concentrate on updating some of our outdated articles of association and Jackie Drewe will publish details on the CRA website prior to the meeting so you have the opportunity to study them. Also featuring prominently

will be our future course of action brought about by the continual failure of this council to recognise and consult your residents association on matters of extreme importance to residents. Website: www.cracamposol.com e-mail: info@cracamposol.com

November is a busy month for Age Concern, with a Rock n Roll revival night at Marianos, 70.30PM for 8PM, for 5 Euros, with an extra 5 if you want chicken and chips. November 28th sees the Menu Del Dia at La Barraca and our annual Christmas Fayre is on the 1st December at Lagarto Verde in Puerto Mazarron. This involves a 1 Euro entry fee which gives you a free Christmas raffle ticket. Its still possible to book stalls. Please note our coach trip to Murcia, at 10 Euros, is on Thursday

received and the laid on transport meant many did not have to worry about having a few drinks. October saw the afternoon of popular song on the 17th followed by the third auction the following day. Both events were well received , the former an early evening opportunity to let your hair down and sing, the latter a chance to recoup some cash for unwanted items. Our advice and information point has moved from Sector c, back to the Cultural Centre on B. This will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM to 1PM, Friday from 12.30 to 3.30PM. The advice and information line is 636 310 216, events 534 310215 on Cmaposol and for the port, 634 336 484. There will no longer be a session outside the Bar Peyma in the port. Tickets will be available from 10AM until 1PM outside the Bar Salud on Camposol on a Friday, and the last Friday in the month will see a regular stall in the same place. The November Talking shop social held at the Cultural Centre on Sector B will be at 1.30PM on the 7th November. Rod sawyer

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

I am writing this from a very rainy and cold UK, listening to all the tales from Camposol of the bridge closure; believe me, I would still far rather be there in our lovely area than fighting the traffic on the motorways here! I am told that our trusty maintenance team have already cleared the streets on ‘C’ of all the rubbish brought down by the heavy rains and plan to tackle the minor repairs, eg manholes, very soon. All of C1 and C2 have been sprayed with a new, stronger weedkiller as part of the program covering the whole sector. Many mature trees and Oleander shrubs have been planted along Calle Ibiscum, the dual carriageway and around the Welcome feature and they will have a good start with the water now in the soil but we ask for anyone who would help water them until they establish, please? If you are nearby when our thirsty group are working in your road, and would like to offer them a drink, that too would be most welcome! Please also note; our green waste container has been re-sited on the dual carriageway; the previous area became very untidy due to its irregular collection, apologies to the nearby residents who were affected by this.

We appeal to those of you who would like to join our band of Wednesday morning volunteers, either on a regular or occasional basis – always rewarded with breakfast! Please contact us if you can spare a bit of time and energy, or just turn up at 9am at the Sensol Villa office (Old Masa office) and help improve ‘C’ even more while making new friends in the process! Our area is looking lovely for all the effort of those hard workers, and of course because of the donations you all so freely give, either regularly to our scheme or just in the buckets; thank you.

I have also heard the happy news that the Ayuntamiento are adopting the remaining sectors of Camposol from 16th October and arrangements have been made with contractors to repair the Rambla bridge within the next few weeks! The emergency road situation doesn’t sound great but hopefully this won’t be needed for too much longer. Tickets are selling fast for our Christmas Carvery Meal & Dance on 5th December at the Golf Club; live music is from Wildcat. Tickets 18 Euros from Ann 968 974 951 or John 634 325 427. D GARDENING AND COMMUNITY OCTOBER REPORT

The Group intended to start its Gardening work on Friday the 28th Sept but as it was raining around 9 am our Gardening Guru Maureen decided to postpone our start date and said that we would start back the following Friday. Wow – What a day the 28th turned out to be. We had seen the weather forecasts, experienced the morning’s rain but no one expected or had ever seen what was to come that afternoon. The Gota Fria and its effect that hit Camposol and a large swathe of southern Spain was beyond even the authorities expectations and has been written about extensively in all our local and regional papers, magazines and of the internet. How did it affect our Camposol D Community. Well firstly it meant that Maureen and Clive were given a welcome break from their daily watering of our plants. That was the positive side. Of course we all know the results of the flood and the resulting damage caused to the rambla bridge. Once again this has been discussed at length and was a major subject during our Citizens Participation Meeting with the Mayor of Mazarron, his deputy and Councillor David Ferdinand. What was particularly pleasing to see was the instant offer of help to the residents of C and D from other

residents and friends and the local police force who manned the damaged bridge. Many residents, including myself had relatives and friends who needed to get to the airports for their return flights home. My elderly parents fell into this group and I was given instant help from friends on A. Internet sites, facebook pages and many other media were full of offers of help to those who needed it. A tremendous Community Spirit emerged during the week following the rain and I believe that our Gardening/Community Group were at the front of this help with many good suggestions and ideas coming through to help others. What has happened since: Our Group did start with our volunteer work the following Friday but a disappointingly low number of volunteers came out that day. WE NEED NEW BLOOD and the return of our many previous volunteers if we are to continue with our work of keeping D as nice as we have made it over the past four years. We do have quite a few reasonably large projects in the pipeline and we wish to get these started asap. Please if you can spare us a couple of hours on a Friday morning, then turn up as indicated on our

noticeboard. We have a Quiz Night in Trevi’s on the night of Halloween 31st Oct. Our Christmas Dinner Dance is NOW to be held in the Amopola Hotel in Boleunovo on the 14th Dec and as I write I am told that we have reached our ceiling of 150 guests with all the rooms of the hotel booked for the night. An excellent night with superb food, service and of course Barrington is guaranteed to those lucky to have reserved their tickets. There will be no NYE D Group night in the Golf Club as was previously announced as the GC is to put on their own function. Future events will be announced as soon as our Ents committee decide what and where they are to be held. Mick Drummond Chairman D Gardening and Community Group.

B Clean Gardening Group

Now that the cooler weather is with us B Clean Gardening Group is back to work. Last Tuesday we cleared some of the mud and gravel that had washed onto the roads after the torrential rain we all

suffered. Their are many jobs that need our attention following the downpour, some areas that need improving and new projects to start this Autumn. We are in urgent need of more people to help on a Tuesday morning, to continue with our attempts to make B Sector a better place for us all to live. If you can spare an hour or two we would be most grateful for your help. Please contact Helen or Sandy on 968199506 / 968986030. We have a GREEN WASTE BIN next to the Cultural Centre and we would appreciate that if you have green waste to dispose of that you ONLY place it in the bin and NOT by the side if it is full as the contractors will not remove it. It is not the responsibility of B Clean Gardening Group or Residents who live by the Centre to clean up the rubbish you have left behind. If the bin is full please either take it to the ECO PARK or take it back home until the bin is emptied and returned. B Clean Gardening Groups aims are to improve the environment in which we all live. The more people that cooperate the easier the task will be. PLEASE HELP US TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS!

Volkswagen to launch budget brand, priced from £4800 Volkswagen is planning to launch a new budget brand to challenge the likes of Dacia – and the bargain basement minis will be sold in Europe too. Prices for the yet-nameless new cheap VWs will start from just €6000, or £4800, according to paperwork seen by CAR. How can VW build city cars so cheaply? Volkswagen plans to build the new range of basic cars in China or India, through its existing partnerships in both countries. These are basic vehicles along the lines of Renault’s successful Dacia brand but because of VW’s global scale it will bring them to Europe for sale here. Three vehicles are on the drawing board: • A simple saloon, €6000 or £4800 • A boxy estate, €7000 or £5600 • A back-to-basics MPV, €8000 or £6400 These will be simple vehicles based on existing architectures from the VW group – platforms which have already been amortised. It is suggested that the Polo/Golf box of bits will underpin these new budget VWs. Won’t the budget Volkswagens affect sales of the Up?

See our main advert on page 12 page 28

These new cheap VWs will be aimed at emerging markets, so will be very basic. A couple of airbags and ABS is your lot – you’ll have to pay extra if you want air-con or other such niceties. Styling will be very rudimentary: boxy shapes are stiffer and require fewer pressings and these cars will require half as many pressings in the body shop as a new VW Golf Mk7. The baby Volkswagen will also be bigger than the Up, stretching between around 4000-4200mm. It’s quite a different kettle of fish compared with the classy Up premium small car. What will the new brand be called? No word yet on the identity of Volkswagen’s 13th brand. Senior sources have suggested to CAR that it’ll be a new badge, not plundered from VW’s extensive back catalogue. A final decision is due to be taken by VW’s board in winter 2012. Word is the world budget car plan is at a very advanced stage – we understand production is scheduled to begin in the final quarter of 2014.

Car sales fall in Europe Car sales in France, Italy and Spain dropped further in September, signalling more pain to come for a European car industry already in crisis. Registrations of new passenger cars in France fell 18 per cent last month compared with a year ago to just under 137,000 units, the CCFA carmakers’ association reported on Monday. The French market is down 14

www.thecamposoljournal.com

per cent for the year to the end of September at 1.43m units, CCFA said. In Italy, where demand for cars is already running at levels last seen in the early 1960s, sales were 26 per cent lower last month than a year ago, at 109,000 units, Italy’s transport ministry said. In Spain, registrations were down 37 per cent at barely 35,000 units, the Anfac industry association reported, and down 11 per cent for the first three quarters of the year to 555,000 units. David Barrientos, a spokesman for Anfac, attributed the unusually sharp drop to a 3 percentage point rise in VAT last month that caused some Spanish consumers to bring forward their car purchases to August. Anfac said it hoped a new scrappage scheme that came into force Tuesday would help lift the market. Buyers of new fuel efficient cars will be eligible for a bonus of €2,000, the cost of which will be split between the Spanish government and carmakers. Southern European countries at the heart of the eurozone debt crisis are experiencing the biggest drops in car sales this year as austerity-squeezed consumers and businesses hold on to their vehicles for longer. The weak registrations represent more bad news for the carmakers most exposed to these markets, which include French producers PSA Peugeot Citroën and Renault, Italian national producer Fiat, and Volkswagen’s Spanish Seat brand. Most of Europe’s mass-market carmakers are losing money in western Europe and Peugeot and General Motors’ Opel brand have said they will close plants as they adjust to a structurally smaller European market. Industry executives say it will be years before western Europe’s car market

2012

recovers to pre-crisis levels. At last week’s Paris auto show, Sergio Marchionne, Fiat’s chief executive, said the industry faced more “difficult years”, and would not see recovery until 2014. In France, Peugeot and Renault suffered a drop in registrations of 20 per cent last month as stronger competitors ate away at their market share. Toyota’s August sales in France were up 5 per cent year on year and Hyundai and Kia’s were 24 per cent higher for the month than a year ago. France’s industry minister has accused Hyundai and Kia of “dumping” cars in Europe or selling them at a price below the cost of production – a claim the Korean carmakers deny – and is asking the European Commission to review a free-trade agreement with South Korea that took effect last year.

Sports A Postcard from my Armchair: The Medinah Miracle

By John Brown

It was finally time for the Lost Weekend to begin. Three whole days of live coverage, fourteen hours a day. Sky does it so well. Getting coverage of the Ryder Cup on Camposol means flirting with the various quasi-legal approaches. Basically Sky doesn’t want you to watch their channels in Spain. The alternative, and I have done this, is to watch the BBC highlights the following day as if they were live. Then refuse to watch any news, don’t go outdoors, don’t talk to anyone, and tell your friends and partner not to speak to you about it. It’s hard, but it is possible. Wednesday (2 days to go) Sky is showing all the previous Ryder Cups, one straight after another. I’m getting into armchair practice. It is interesting how many players stay in the teams (Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson). Many others simply disappear, not just from the Ryder Cup Team but also from the PGA Tour (John Henry, JB Holmes, Ben Curtis, Brett Wetterich, Chris De Marco, Chad Campbell, Vaughn Taylor, Boo Weekly). This may contribute to lack of experience on the US side? This time there were four rookies in the US team as against only one in the European team. Thursday (The Opening Ceremony) I was feeling a bit anxious about whether I was prepared enough, so I got some last minute practice in. From 4.30 pm I took up my position, in the armchair, in front of the TV. I put on my Celtic Manor Ryder Cup logo polo shirt. Call me a scruff, if you dare, but I intend to wear it until the end. I though that Mrs B. was also getting some practice in when she said ‘Would you like me to bring you a glass of red wine?’ Then she announced: ‘You realise that I am going out with the DAMES on Friday?’ (Dorothy, Angela, Margaret, Elspeth, and Shirley). ‘But it’s the Ryder Cup!’ I replied, pathetically. ‘And your point is . . . . ?’ My mind was racing in panic. I might be

page 30

forced to leave my chair to feed myself, maybe missing some of the action at a critical point? Then I remembered that Sky had ‘Live Pause’. ‘You’ll miss it all,’ I said deceptively. ‘I’m just thinking of you!’ ‘And I am just thinking of you too – there is a frozen pizza in the fridge!’ Europe won the Opening Ceremony. Ollie shed some tears for Seve. I think there will be more tears before it’s all over? He said ‘We are going to take the Ryder Cup back home on the plane!’ But only 3 of the 12 players live in Europe. All the other 9 live in the US. They won’t be on the plane! There was a scruffy youth inexplicably reading a golf poem to music. They introduced him by his footwear – Just in Timberlands. If he comes back to the Closing Ceremony, they might introduce him as ‘Only in HiTecs?’ Friday, Day 1: We are off! Medinah Country Club has been taken over by the Chicago Beer and Hot Dog army. Europe were up in all foursomes at one point, silencing the crowd. Two points each. Davis Love. Surprisingly has sent out Stricker and Woods together again – a mistake I think. It has ended USA 5 Europe 3. Not too bad. Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson were 11 under par for only 14 holes. Nicolas Colsaerts was 10 under par on his own ball! Saturday, Day 2 At one point it looked OK, but the morning session has ended USA 8, Europe 4. This is ominous. If the afternoon goes the way of the US, they will only need to win 4 singles. The afternoon was more of the same. The Europeans (us) are over-hitting all the putts. Only Poulter, MacIlroy, Donald, and Colsaerts are good enough to match the US team (apart from Tiger, who is awful). There is an American fool shouting abuse, probably drunk and over the top. You can watch it on YouTube at : http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR7jwQ_ LOS8 It is getting late, and I am getting tired now. Only 30 hours in the armchair so far. Maybe I needed to put in some more armchair practice? Late in the evening, Poulter has just turned on the style. He’s birdied the last 5 holes in a row. Stunning! (There might be a case for only showing Poulter’s wideeyed double-fist pumping after 9.00 pm when the children are all in bed! There

www.thecamposoljournal.com

was a little girl on the 17th hole who grabbed her mother’s hand, after Poulter holed again. You wouldn’t want to spill his pint, would you?) At the outset, the pundits said it would go down to the last game on the 18th. At this rate, they’ve nearly won without needing to play the singles. It is USA 10, Europe 6. It is almost embarrassing? Ollie needs to put out the players who can putt at the top of the team. Sunday, Day 3: The Singles A miracle is required now. The bookmakers have it at 66-1 for a European come -back. Davis Love has the greens at 13 on the Stimpmeter. That’s the fastest in history. He believes that the US Team can putt better the European Team. Most of the Europeans have been overhitting their putts. This is a good start. All of the top 5 players have chipped, and holed long putts. There is a lot of blue on the scoreboard. We have some friends around. There is a lot of yelling when the putts go in. We can’t believe what we are seeing? I’m drained just watching it. Un – bee – leave – able! Unbelievable! Stunning come back! It’s all over. USA 14 Europe 14 ½! How did it happen? The Europeans holed all the putts that they missed yesterday. The US Team couldn’t hole anything? Justin Rose was brilliant, and so was Luke, and Ian, . . . .and Rory . . . and . . Paul . . . and . . . and . . . If they had holed any 1 out of 10 of the big clutch putts, the US Team would have won. I wonder whether US arrogance was to blame? They seemed to believe that all they needed was the crowd behind them? Keegan Bradley went out to the first tee before the start in order to wind the crowd up. Bubba invited a big cheer during his first tee shot. Phil was playing to the gallery – maybe they all were rather than just being focused? Phil’s Captain’s picks, Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk, are getting a lot of US criticism for their poor form, and then there is the Tiger conundrum. I don’t think Tiger would ever turn down the chance to play in the Ryder Cup, but he just can’t seem to get excited by it? I wonder whether the European Team was suffering from intimidation by the crowd, until they saw how Ian Poulter overcame it at the end of Day 2? That’s it for another 2 years! Only the 42 hours in the armchair! Bring on Gleneagles in 2014! I’ve just registered for the ticket allocation system. I’ll be there!

LATEST NEWS

Mazarron FC did not have the best of starts to the new season in the Primera Autonomica losing the first three games, at home to Jumilla and away to Corvera both 1-0 and then 2-1 away at Abaran. The second home game against Atletico Pulpileno was postponed following the terrible floods in Murcia and Almeria

2012

The visit to Corvera on 23rd September was an eye-opener for the many Los Amigos de Mazarron FC supporters who travelled to the game. How the Murcia Football Federation allows teams into its league with such primitive facilities is beyond belief. The playing pitch was simply earth that had been rolled and seemed to have been dug out of a hill with two goalposts placed at each end and sloped heavily from one side to another. There were no toilet facilities for the many lady supporters who travelled from Mazarron and no seats for spectators unless you sat on the few steps which the players and match officials had to use to enter and leave the field of play. Otherwise spectators had to stand at the top of the mounds of earth from which the pitch had been dug. Mazarron supporters were verbally abused by a group of young Corvera fans who also resorted to throwing stones at Mazarron players. It beggars belief that Corvera had the gall to charge spectators for admission and a letter of complaint has been sent to the Murcia Football Federation. The Beatles tribute evening organised by Los Amigos de Mazarron FC and

held at Mariano’s Bar & Restaurant, Camposol was an outstanding success. The capacity audience was enthralled by the performance of The Liverpool Band, a group of talented Spanish musicians from the Alicante area. For those who had never had the opportunity of seeing the Beatles perform live this was surely the closest you could get to the real thing. The evening raised €1100 in support of Mazarron Football Club and Los Amigos President, Dave Capper and

Social Secretary Andy Riley presented a cheque for this amount to Jose Rodriguez, President of Mazarron Football Club at the Estadio Municipal, Mazarron. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Admission is just €4 with juveniles free. Full details of all games, both home and away, are announced on the Tuesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on our website www. losamigosdemazarron.es and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Forthcoming fixtures are:Sun 28th October AD Soho-Medi CF (Away) Sun 4th November NO GAME Sun11th November EMF Fuente Alamo (Away) Sun 18th Novembe CD ALBERCA (HOME) Sun 25th November CF Lorca Deportiva (Away) Sun2nd December Olimpico De Totana B (HOME)

In addition the postponed home game against Atletico Pulpileno is scheduled to be re-arranged for the first week in November. Full details will be given in the local media.

Spain’s jobless flee to Argentina

Desperate Spaniards are fleeing in their thousands to set up new lives in Argentina, preferring rampant inflation to the prospect of searching for a job in a country with the highest unemployment rate in the industrialised world. Official figures show that more than 65,000 Spaniards have fled to Argentina since the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, with another 25,000 settling in Mexico. Faced with a jobless rate of close to 25pc, many would rather live in Argentina, with an estimated inflation rate of 24pc and tightening trade barriers, than remain in crisis-hit Spain. “I prefer inflation to joblessness,” Erika, 31, who prefers life in a Buenos Aires surburb without proper sewerage, told the Sunday Times. Kim Vidal, who saw his wage as a former commercial director in Barcelona slashed from £2,400 a month to £970, also prefers life in Argentina to Spain. “People welcomed me with love,” he told the paper, “the news from the old country is so sad”.

Due to an amazing year for sales, we are desperately seeking new properties and in particular Fortuna and Rosa style villas on Sectors A & B with or without pools and we have buyers waiting (when did you last hear that?).

Mercers New Office What a month September has been! We won a new award, which was the 5* Best Real Estate Agent – Spain, in the International European Property Awards 2012. Having previously won the 4* award, this is as good as awards get and underlines our commitment to excellence and customer service. Sales in September really took off and we were able to secure 12 sales. A remarkable feat in the current economic climate. This level of achievement is not down to luck but hard work on behalf of our amazing team, lead by our Sales Manager Lyndsay

and a lot of investment in our marketing and sales dept. To top the month off we moved into the old Bankinter offices opposite Banco Santander on Sector B. We did not move very far geographically but we have moved a million miles in business terms. We now have 5 windows of display area, a corner location and a wonderfully welcoming interior. Please do feel free to call in if your are looking to sell your property, looking to buy a property or indeed just want some friendly advice. The Mayor of Mazarron will officially open the office 17th Nov at 2pm.

Overall market conditions are still very tough but we are seeing a few “chinks of light” and this is starting to carry through to sales. One major obstacle to making more sales is the Spanish banks reluctance to lend more than 50-60% LTV (loan to value) and even then, they want our buyers to jump through numerous hoops. Property prices seem to have stabilized and for the first time in many years we actually have demand for Rosa & Fortuna style detached villas on sectors A & B and as has been documented, once demand outstrips supply, this leads ultimately to price increases, which is very encouraging for the future.

Sharp rise in banking fees According to the Bank of Spain, if you have a current account today, you can be charged a maximum of 75 euros, in 2011 it was 42 euros. That’s an increase of 78%. In July 2011, the Bank of Spain stopped regulating the fees that banks and cajas charge their clients for services and products. In the last year, according to the Bank of Spain, bank fees have increased on average by 40%, although there are services that have registered a rise of up to 300%. This is the case of the commission that the banks can charge for a transfer: the maximum price has risen from five euros for 2011 to twenty euros this year. Maintenance fees for current or savings accounts have also risen substantially. The minimum remains at 12.50 euros, however, the maximum allowable has shot up from 42 euros in 2011 to the 75€ that banks can now charge.

0!,3 %6%.43 Well do you have internet? Are you on Facebook? If you are have you joined our group page? Why I can hear you ask? well let me tell you. Early in September Hubby Kevin took a trip back to the UK leaving my all alone to care for the dogs and donkeys. All was good every morning and evening all the animals were fed. One of the donkeys, Mateo, has taught himself to open the door to the storeroom, so when inside the door is locked whilst the feeds are prepared. This evening though Mateo had other ideas, when I went in the store he decided that he would BOLT the door from the outside. He then the cheeky sod started to bang on the door for his dinner. Panic stepped in and my first thought was ¨How long am I going to be in here?¨ I had a bottle of water and 10 kilos of carrots that would put me on until someone realises that I´m not ´on line´. Then I remembered that by chance I had brought my phone with me. Usually its left in the stable but today I had it in the store I managed to phone a friend. She arrived about 15 minutes later, eventually she freed me and as she opened the door the phone rang and Alison asked if I was OK. I told her what had just happened and after she got off the floor laughing the story was plastered over Facebook, and you can imagine the comments and the fits of laughter that it caused. Needless to say that now the phone is always taken into the store just in case. More seriously now, we have for the past few years helped as much as possible with the catching of abandoned and injured dogs. More recently there has been the building of a new kennel block outside Mazarron Country Club on the main road. I am given to understand that the owner has stated that she is not receiving many enquiries by people that have lost dogs. She works for the Council and anyone losing a dog within the Camposol, and Mazarron areas should acquaint themselves with these kennels to see if he or she has been handed in. SHE ONLY KEEPS DOGS THERE FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE THEY ARE MOVED so regular visits are a must. We have some 20 or so dogs looking for permanent homes. All our rescues are either here or in foster care. We do not have dogs

in kennels; they are all in loving homes. I will be on Camposol B car park as usual Monday mornings 11.30 to 1.30 for collection of your unwanted goods. These goods are taken to our shop in Fuente Alamo where they are sold. The money is used for the care of the donkeys, dogs, pigs, lamb and cat that have all been rescued locally. Take a look at our dogs here, and on our web pages maybe one of them will pull at your heartstrings. Andrea PS. Monday 17 December, Sherry Mince pies and two of our donkeys on the car park to celebrate Christmas. Come and see us!!
