JOURNAL
THE Dear Readers,
Welcome to the November edition of The Journal. Some of you may be slightly puzzled by the theme of our front cover. For those of you that don’t know, Movember is an annual month long event involving the growing of moustaches in order to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Always happy to champion a good cause, both myself, and Danny our graphic designer will spend the month of November growing the finest upper lip plumage for many a mile. Danny is hoping to successfully pull of the “Tom Selleck”, whereas I am aiming more for the Trucker look. Of course we will be doing this in the name of charity so please feel free to make donation. It doesn’t matter if its 1€ or 5€, every single penny counts for this great cause. We will also be posting regular photo updates of our progress on Facebook so visit our page and show your support! Overall it has been a busy October here at the office! We have been working hard to bring you the best ever magazine, packed with information features and interesting articles, as well as a whirlwind trip back to the UK and training for the MABS race for life. This month we have a fantastic column from our very own Dawn Llewellyn Price, who makes her feelings about bullfighting quite clear. Also we are delighted to announce that we have a fantastic new contributor. Patrick Waller will be sharing with us his local knowledge of Spain and its gastronomy which is an accumulation of many years of living, walking, eating and visiting various parts of this wonderful country. He is a fantastic writer and we are certain that you will enjoy his column. Readers please note that we now have a new Facebook page. The response to it has been fantastic and at the time of going to print we already have several hundred “Likes” just one week after starting the page. This means that we can now keep our readers up to date with local information, news and events in between prints. If you have not yet seen our page, then on Facebook search for “The Journal Spain” and then click the “Like” button. Thanks you to all our readers who have done this so far. If you are on twitter then please follow us @TheJournalSpain. Last month we ran an article about the importance of having your chimney swept prior to using your log burner this winter. At the time the magazine arrived last month it was unseasonably warm, so most people hadn’t given using their log burner much thought. Now that the nights are getting cooler and winter is upon us, don’t forget to have you chimney swept! Call Tony on 646 438 694 for further advice. Oh, we almost forgot. This month you are reading not just “The Journal” but “The Award Winning Journal” The latter definitely has a nicer ring to it! We are very proud to have received an industry award in recognition of our efforts with this community magazine. You can read about further in! Well, enough from me. Im off to get my running shoes on as the MABS Race for Life won’t run itself. See you next month,

EasyJet Plane Takes Off Leaving Passengers Behind
The man who was responsible for sending a team of ‘fake’ disabled basketball players to the Sydney Paralympic Games has been fined - 13 years after the fact. It was one of sport’s greatest ever scandals: in the year 2000, Spain’s mentally disabled basketball team won Gold at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. The problem was that only two of the twelve players actually had a mental disability. The lid was lifted on the deceit when Spanish undercover journalist Carlos Ribagorda published an exposé on how the team had cheated. Ribagorda, who had secretly signed on as a member of the winning team, revealed that Spain’s Spanish Paralympic

(Feddi) didn’t hesitate in signing up athletes without any type of handicap,” the journalist wrote in Spain’s Capital magazine. “They just sent them an official letter the aim of this policy was to win medals and gain more sponsorship.” After the revelations were published, the Sydney 2000 gold-winning medal team had its medal stripped and Russia was awarded the medal. At the time, Fernando Martin Vicente said the allegations were not true, but he later apologized for the incident. Now, 13 years later, Martín Vicente is finally receiving official punishment — on Monday he was fined a total of €5,400. The ex-president of Feddi has also paid back €142,355 in subsidies the
EasyJet is investigating how one of its planes took off for Britain from Spain while leaving 29 of its checked-in passengers stranded and baffled at the gate. The evening flight from Malaga to Bristol did manage to carry 110 passengers, as well as all their baggage. But as the remaining EasyJet customers queued to board flight EZY6056 at the Costa del Sol airport, they were forced to watch the aircraft set off down the runway. The astonished passengers, who were left in limbo between the departure gate and the plane, told how they had to bang on locked airport doors for minutes to alert staff to their plight. EasyJet said the problem occurred on the 9.15pm flight last Saturday due to “an issue at the boarding gate” and the airline was still trying to work out how airport and airline staff contrived to lose a quarter of the passengers without noticing. The passengers’ luggage and boarding passes had all been scanned at the gate before the missing 29 proceeded down the walkway. According to one report, the group had reached a stairwell when a member of the ground crew drew a

security ribbon across their path to the plane. Assuming it was a temporary wait while passengers who had already boarded were seated, the group queued patiently – until they looked outside and realised the plane had gone. A spokeswoman for EasyJet said 19 customers took the next available flight to Gatwick at 10.30pm. The remaining 10 passengers spent the night in Malaga before flying to Bristol the next day. In a statement, the airline said: “EasyJet has contacted and apologised to the passengers who did not board their flight from Malaga to Bristol on Saturday 5 October due to an issue at the boarding gate. “We have launched an investigation to understand what happened and have offered flight vouchers and a refund of onward travel arrangements from Gatwick as a gesture of goodwill to the affected passengers. EasyJet arranged for 19 passengers to travel on the next available service to Gatwick and arranged accommodation for 10 passengers who travelled to Bristol the next day.” The luggage was reunited with the passengers after their flights home, EasyJet said, adding that there was no requirement for cabin crew to do a headcount of passengers on the plane.
Shepherd Scammer gets some Baaa´d News A Bulgarian conman who cheated would-be shepherds into paying for non-existent jobs in Australia has been arrested in Spain. Dimitar Dimitrov P was arrested in the coastal town of Torrevieja, Spanish police said on Tuesday. The 40-year-old was the subject of an international arrest warrant for his role in scamming Bulgarian jobseekers hoping to find work in Australia as shepherds. In February 2000, he posted a job ad in the Bulgarian press advertising the desirable positions. Candidates were asked to fill out a form supposedly created by an Australian Government agency acting as an intermediary between the candidates and farmers. The would-be shepherds then had to send in their details — and a small fee. There was just one catch: the jobs didn’t exist, and neither did the Australian Government agency. Some 221 fell victims to the scam, Spanish police said in their statement.

Spain Gives the Thumbs Up to Bullfighting During Kids TV Time Spain’s children will still be able to sit down after school and watch a bullfight on TV after the Spanish Parliament decided on Tuesday it was OK to show such events during children’s viewing hours. The decision comes after a parliamentary committee that oversees the operations of Spanish national broadcaster RTVE rejected a move to ban the showing

use the crossing. Shepherds have a right to use around 125,000 kilometres of ancient paths for seasonal livestock migrations from cool highland pastures in summer to warmer and more protected lowland grazing in winter. The movement is called transhumance and in Spain up until recently involved close to 1 million animals a year, mostly sheep and cattle.
Tourists were surprised to see downtown traffic cut to permit the ovine parade to bleat — bells clanking — across some of Madrid’s most upmarket urban settings. Since at least 1273, shepherds have had the right to use droving routes that wind across land that was once open fields and woodland before Madrid mushroomed to the great metropolis it is today. E very year, a handful of shepherds

Modern farming practices and the use of faster road transport are increasingly confining animals to barns or trucks, because shepherding is costly and time-consuming, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has promoted the colourful annual Transhumance Fiesta in Madrid since 1994. Spaniards are proud of their centuriesold sheep rearing traditions and hold the native Merino breed of sheep in high esteem. Merinos have gone on to form the backbone of important wool industries in places such as Australia and South America. Madrid became an important urban centre when King Philip II chose it as the capital of his vast empire in 1561. Some paths have been used for more than 800 years and modern-day Madrid has sprawled to engulf two northsouth routes. One that crosses Puerta del Sol — Madrid’s equivalent of New York’s Times Square — dates back to 1372.

of bullfights from 6pm to 10pm, or children’s viewing time. The initiative to ban the showing of bullfighting on television came from the Valencian left-wing party Compromís. It followed hot on the heels of a decision by RTVE to broadcast a bullfight in September. Defending the plan, Joan Baldoví of the Valencian left-wing party Compromís said the objective was to protect children from “graphic” images like “violence against animals”. He said showing bullfights on television was a “flagrant breach” of the RTVE style guide. Juan Luis Gordo from Spain’s opposition PSOE party also said the protection of children came first and trumped the “programming needs” of the national broadcaster. But Miguel Sánchez de Alcázar of Spain’s ruling Popular Party (PP) said the proposal came from the “most left of the left” in the parliament. He accused the plan’s backers of carrying out “some sort of ideological crusade” which was “baseless”. “Bullfighting is the rich and vital poetry of Spain,” said the PP politician. “The ‘bulls’ are the most refined form of culture in the world”, he added, saying that without understanding the bulls, it was impossible to understand Spanish history. Catalan senator Jordi Guillot of the centre-left grouping Entesa said “the torture of an animal — no matter how much you justify it as tradition, doesn’t have any explanation”. The initiative was eventually rejected with 24 against the move and 14 in favour.

An Important Announcement from Furniture Plus It has come to our attention that in the first half of last year some people may have been sold furniture packages and items of furniture by an individual claiming to be from furniture plus. If you are one of the people that have been affected by this, we would like to make you aware please that if you did not buy your furniture from our showroom above Mercadonna in Puerto de Mazarron, and you do not have a Furniture Plus written receipt, it was not supplied by us. It was from a bogus supplier who probably visited you at home with catalogues and supplied you from their personal stock. We have invested heavily in a 10 thousand square foot showroom and display stock so you can “Try before you buy” and have never operated high pressure home catalogue sales techniques. If you feel you may be affected by this please contact us at Furniture Plus by visiting our showroom, or calling us on 968 153 907 so we can continue to investigate who may be responsible for misleading our potential customers and by so doing putting at risk our cherished and hard won reputation for quality and service.

Thank you for taking time to read this Roy and Christine Furniture Plus
Things you need to know before buying furniture in spain: With the credit crunch and Euro exchange rate today you cannot afford to miss these tips on buying furniture in Spain to help you avoid regrets or mistakes. When buying your property you need to get the measurements of the rooms. Developers are making properties smaller than they did a few years ago. Plans will often show the room area in square meters but not the dimensions necessary for fitting in furniture. When looking at properties and show houses, take a tape measure and note book and record measurements to check actual sizes. Measure at floor level between the skirting tiles. In a duplex do not assume an upstairs room is the same as that downstairs, even if it is directly above and looks identical. When we first opened our business 9 years ago we could put into a double room a double or even king-size bed, 2 bedside tables, a chest of drawers and often a dressing table with stool. Now we are lucky to fit in a normal-sized
double bed and 2 bedsides. The twin bedded rooms are a bigger problem. A lot of the show houses are display 2 single beds with a bedside. Look at the beds: what size are they? Are they the normal 3ft (90 x 190 cm) beds or are they Spanish size somier and mattress with headboards (80 x 180cm)? This is important; you need to measure from the headboard wall to the door frame for the length of bed you can fit in, or you will not be able to open and close the bedroom door. Prices should include free delivery to surrounding areas, I.V.A.(VAT), no extra charges for using a credit card, full assembly of furniture and fixing of curtain poles and mirrors. If you have a linen pack the beds should be made for you, with a kitchen / household pack everything should be washed up and put away in the cupboards, and if you have kitchen appliances they should be plumbed in and tested ready for use (subject to appropriate connections being available). Patio furniture should also be left ready for your use so all in all you have nothing to do but open the wine, relax and start enjoying your new home in the sun. At Furniture Plus we give our customers a good, professional service, value for money and will help in any way we can. Kind regards Chris, Roy and staff. Furniture Plus, here to help you because we care!

Independent Magazine Publishers Awards 2013
As we mentioned last month, we had been nominated and shortlisted in several categories at the Independent Magazine Publisher Awards in the United Kingdom. For us, simply being nominated was honour enough. We went expecting nothing other than to meet some fellow publishers and have a good time so we were both surprised and delighted to bring some glassware home to Spain. Those of you who have been our long term readers, advertisers and supporters, will remember a time in the not so distant past when this community magazine was not quite the same success that it is today. At its lowest point it had merged with the now defunct Mediterrania
magazine. (who remembers the Mediterrania?) To make matters worse it was placed at the back of the Mediterrania, like the proverbial poor relation. That magazine could not have been further from the one that you are reading today. It has come have come a long way in the last 2 years. It is hard to imagine those dark times, as today we are once again a standalone publication, 48 pages jam packed with news, features, articles, and a plethora of high quality content. We understand that to give our advertisers the best exposure and best results we needed to be content driven, and not just page after page of adverts that people simply flick idly through. Our magazine reflects the fact that there is a market for a high quality, free, well designed magazine that puts the community and the local businesses before profits.

Wellspring Victory Church
On Saturday October 12th Wellspring Wanderers set out for their first walk after the Summer break. Walkers met at La Vida Restaurant in Cantereros for breakfast and were joined later by another group who were not eating. We then set out from the restaurant for a steady one and a half hour walk around the El Pareton area, in a circuit and meeting up again for refreshments back at La Vida. It was a treat to see close up, all the red bell peppers drying out in the sunshine, and the aroma and the vibrant colour was amazing… it was a great first walk.
For more details of our walking events please call Phil on 660 743 603 or check out our facebook page under Wellspring Wanderers. Next walk on 16th November.

A Visit to Cuenca Spain

haunted atmosphere harking back to times of the Spanish Inquisition(they had their regional headquarters in the city in a very large sombre stone building, See photo below). Walking around at night
One of the things that we enjoy about our job is discovering new places, revisiting old favourites and sharing our experience and knowledge with our customers. So going back to Cuenca,
that small but majestic medieval cliff hanging city, provided us with a perfect excuse to rediscover the city and try out some new bars, restaurants and explore the back streets. Cuenca’s main square Foreign tourists now jam the main square full; sitting and consuming coffee, beer, tapas etc. It was quite an
influx of people compared to three years ago when we last visited but we had expected this as we had heard the new AVE now brings large numbers of international tourists on day trips from Madrid. And sure enough in the evening the atmosphere was more relaxed with less people around. Monastery of San Pablo and partial view of Cuenca And to be honest in Cuenca, with a little imagination and a quick wander off the main square and street it very easy to find enchanting quiet zones, to get lost in side streets, sit in mini parks overlooking the famous gorge below and generally explore back streets, local shops(“for local people, you know”) and bars. Cuenca is especially interesting at night when darkness brings with it dark shadows which along with narrow streets and medieval buildings huddled together produce an eery and even
page 14
on the very quiet streets gave us the sensation that someone was following us just a corner or poorly lit alley away, stalking us in those dark lanes .For this exact reason Cuenca is used to film period films and series for Spanish TV such as “Aguila Roja”. So a late night walk or early morning stroll are highly recommended to get a bit of atmosphere into the system. Shadowy streets Cuenca has plenty to keep the average tourist interested for a day or two and the sights are easily found as the main square and the The Hanging Houses are close together. And such delights as the Monastery of San Pablo, and the Abstract Art Museum are must visits and the Procession of the Drunkards in Holy Week is an alternative view to Semana Santa. All these are unique and quite fascinating but if you want to take away a little of the veneer of the city’s tourist look then there are few things worth knowing, which are more to do with myth or are simply a little quirky. For example did you know that: -There are owls in the spectacular gorge surrounding Cuenca whose twit tawooing echoes around the gorge adding to that eery feeling at night.I went out for walk in the darkness of early morning: The owls hooting, the dark shadows, and the lack of 21st century noise pollution along with muted lighting made me think, “This could easily be a couple of hundred years ago”. The silence was complete(the old part of the city is set away from the modern part) and only broken by our feathered friends hooting to each other until the dull light of sunrise on the horizon became more pronounced and chased away those lurking shadows and the first local
www.thecamposoljournal.com
microbus came up the hill and parked right next to where I was contemplating the view. Its driver getting out to have an early morning puff on a cigarette. This mundane 21st century act seemed to be a signal for all owls to go to sleep and maintain silence. -Cuenca has its fair share of urban myths. A Spanish tourist pointed out to us two or three huge rocks not far from
San Pedro’s bridge that apparently had fallen off the cliff around eighty years ago and had crushed a gypsy family who are still buried under the rocks as they are so huge no one could move them. I can’t find any information on this anywhere but it makes for a strange story.

San Pablo’s Bridge -The local craft beer has a ‘different’ name: Dawat 7. -Prehistoric Conquenses were supposedly the first cavemen on earth to hallucinate on magic mushrooms…(now you know why the intestines on a stick are so popular). The local craft beer brewed in the city -There is a local legend that a local lad,in the middle ages, became infatuated with a girl who was a stranger to town. After a while he found out, whilst c her in out of the rain, that she had, under her cape, lovely hairy hooved goat’s legs and was the Devil himself.(I know,I know it sounds as if the local lad had probably been at the mushrooms too). -Under the old city are a maze of unexplored/blocked up tunnels most of which have not been opened up for centuries. interesting and fun medieval and out there on the edge(of a cliff) city. It is a charming and intriguing place but you have to work at it when visiting otherwise you just get the sitting in the main square, visit the cathedral vision of the city. If you explore the nooks and crannies you’ll find fun and unique places. But importantly, its second most enchanting facet is that it is on the edge of one of Spain’s classic wild and wonderful sierras where you can get lost in the mountains and see loads of wildlife, the source of the Cuervo River and the Jucar River, Las Torcas(huge natural craters), La Ciudad Encantada and Las Majadas(both strange clusters of weather eroded rocks in all kinds of shapes in a beautiful natural setting). And, if you have time visit the restaurant in Las Majadas village called Las Majadas…. the owner is one of these

ABOUT MOVEMBER During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go.
Movember’s not just for men. The women of Movember, are known as Mo Sistas. They play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. Mo Sistas also get involved by signing up at Movember.com, and participate by raising funds and awareness themselves. Essentially, Mo Sistas do everything that Mo Bros do, without a Mo. MORE ABOUT MO SISTAS HERE. At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their Movember journey by throwing their own MOVEMBER PARTIES or attending one of the official GALA PARTÉS held around the world.
HOW IT WORKS Movember challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health. In October, Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com, and on the 1st of Movember, with a clean-shaven face, start their Mo growing journey. Then for the entire month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, effectively become walking, talking billboards for 30 days. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of
THE MOVEMBER EFFECT Another crucial part of being a Mo Bro is to raise funds for men’s health. Men donate their face, and much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts.
Movember supports world class men’s health programmes that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programmes, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and

CAMPOSOL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION It has long been thought by the Central Liaison Committee of the CRA that we need to take a more proactive approach in the political scene of Mazarron. We started that process at the last AGM where we removed from our rules the statement that we were a non-political organisation. Since then the Political Sub Committee have worked hard to prepare the ground for Camposols own political party. That work is now complete. The CRA initiallysupported this work but it is now for interested individuals to take it over, the CRA itself will not be a political party. Since the last election the PP party has made no contact with the CRA. That indicates the level of interest they have in helping us achieve our aims. The PP party even voted against the bridge repairs for Camposol, which in itself speaks volumes. The PSOE party is in coalition Want to stand out?

with the UIDM and is working with them, Pepe Gomez and David Fernandez in trying to rectify the many problems facing Camposol. While this has been going on,we have had a number of private meetings with the party officials of the UIDM and the Mayor, Gines Campillo. We successfully negotiated to appoint Jose Navarro as our District Mayor, a major step forward for Camposol. One of our own committee, a Spanish citizen and resident of Camposol now with direct access to the town hall officials. This is paying dividends already and many residents problems have been resolved by Jose. At our last meeting we met with GinesCampillo, Mayor of Mazarron, Juan Andres Martinez, President of the UIDM and Juan Pedro Martinez, the party spokesman. The UIDM stated that they are committed to Camposol and to resolving its many problems, albeit they are complex and it will take some considerable time to resolve them all. They said they wanted to work with the CRA to achieve these aims. They want us to take a proactive part in
this process and offered Jose Navarro and Bob Owen positions on the executive committee of the UIDM. This involves weekly meetings and gives us access and input to the decision making process of the UIDM and ultimately the council. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by cooperating with the UIDM or any other party in power at the time. While this is the first time that the CRA have agreed to work formally with a political party it is no different to our working with the PP party to achieve our aims when they were in power. We have to work with and negotiate with the powers that be, whatever political persuasion they may have. Bob Owen President

History of the Poppy
The origins of the Poppy Factory go back to 1922 when Major George Howson MC, an engineer who served on the Western Front in the First World War, founded the Disabled Society to help disabled ex-Service men and women. Howson suggested to the British Legion that the Society should make poppies, and the artificial flowers were designed so that someone who had lost the use of a hand could assemble them. With a grant of £2,000, he set up a small factory off the Old Kent Road with five ex-Servicemen. It was here that the first British poppies were made. A copy of the letter he sent to his parents about his ideas is displayed at the Poppy Factory. In it he says: ‘I have been given a cheque for £2,000 to make poppies with. It is a large responsibility and
will be very difficult. If the experiment is successful it will be the start of an industry to employ 150 men. I do not think it can be a great success, but it is worth trying. I consider the attempt ought to be made if only to give the disabled their chance.’ Within a few months the factory was providing work and an income for 50 disabled veterans. As demand grew, the premises became too small and in 1925, Major George Howson MC(centre) the Factory moved to the current site in Richmond, Surrey. In the same year the charity changed its name to the British Legion Poppy Factory The origins of the Remembrance poppy lie with two women:
Moina Bell Michael, an American teacher, was so moved by Colonel John McRae’s poem “In Flanders Field” that she bought poppies with money collected from her colleagues and sold them to raise funds for U.S ex-Servicemen. Madame Guerin, a Frenchwoman, took up the idea and in 1921 made and sold millions of poppies throughout the US to raise funds for the rehabilitation of areas in France devastated by the First World War. She persuaded Earl Haig to adopt the poppy for the British Legion and sent French women to London to sell them. In 1922 Earl Haig accepted Major Howson’s offer to supply poppies. The rest as they say, is historyI have been given a cheque for £2,000 to make poppies with. It is a large responsibility and will be very difficult. If the experiment is successful it will be the start of an industry to employ 150 men. I do not think it can be a great success, but it is worth trying. I consider the attempt ought to be made if only to give the disabled their chance. Major George Howson MC

Bonfire night- a brief history
In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes (Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish), Britain’s most notorious traitor. After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of their religion. James I had, after all, had a Catholic mother. Unfortunately, James did not turn out to be more tolerant than Elizabeth and a number of young men, 13 to be exact, decided that violent action was the answer.

A small group took shape, under the leadership of Robert Catesby. Catesby felt that violent action was warranted.
Indeed, the thing to do was to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In doing so, they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics. Today these conspirators would be known as extremists, or terrorists. To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in a cellar, just under the House of Lords. But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack, including some people who even fought for more rights for Catholics. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts. One of the group members even sent an

Parliament on November 5th. The warning letter reached the King, and the King’s forces made plans to stop the conspirators. Guy Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the early hours of November 5th, was caught, tortured and executed. It’s unclear if the conspirators would ever have been able to pull off their plan to blow up the Parliament even if they had not been betrayed. Some have suggested that the gunpowder itself was so old as to be useless. Since Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators got caught before trying to ignite the powder, we’ll never know for certain. Even for the period which was notoriously unstable, the Gunpowder Plot struck a very profound chord for the people of England. In fact, even today, the reigning monarch only enters the Parliament once a year, on what is called “the State Opening of Parliament”. Prior to the Opening, and according to custom, the Yeomen of the Guard search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster. Nowadays, the Queen and Parliament still observe this tradition. On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.

Drone Lifeguards take to beaches David Hasselhoff made redundant. Lifeguards of the future may soon come with four rotors. RTS Labs, an Iranian firm has started work on a drone lifeguard. Tired of hearing stories about people drowning in the Caspian Sea, the researchers sought out a way to improve water rescue. Drones can help in several ways humans can’t-they can move faster over choppy seas, they always remain calm, and a drone will never fall asleep on the job. Iran has an usually high rate of unintentional drownings compared with European countries. A robot that helps lifeguards save lives faster could presumably lower that rate. The Pars Aerial Rescue Robot is designed to work as a mobile lifesaver dispensary, flying out to those in need and dropping vital flotation aids until better help can be secured. As currently designed, Pars starts with a quadrotor, which makes sense: quadrotors are versatile platforms, beloved by scientists because the machines can do things like test eagle arms and kinect-based navigation. Quadrotors are also a relatively strong. That means Pars wouldn’t have any trouble carrying life preservers as well as a sophisticated navigation software and infrared cameras. In its current iteration, Pars carries up to three life preservers; in future iterations, it could carry as many as 15, the researchers say. To fit that many life preservers on a drone without the whole thing looking like a precarious stack of Oreos, researchers want Pars to carry
page 26
self-inflating life preservers that use chemical materials to bloat. Pars would also be able to land on water and float until a rescue vessel picks it up. At this time, these drones are being trialled on the beaches of Queensland, Australia. And who knows, maybe they could soon be on the beaches of Mazarrón. After all the negative press that we hear about drones, its nice to hear that they can actually have a purpose in saving lifes, rather than ending them.
Waterproof iPhone Advert: ‘Owners Fooled’
Many owners of Apple devices were waiting anxiously mid
www.thecamposoljournal.com
September for the company´s highly anticipated release of the new iOS 7 operating system. Owners of apple devices, simply had to download the software and then it would automatically install on the device. Many commented on the lack of supplied information regarding the iOS 7´s new features. This lead to a frenzy of activity on online forums with tutorials and information being supplied by the public. Someone however thought that they would check how many people actually believe everything that they read online. Within hours of its release an “advert” began circulating on social media sites claims that updating devices with the operating system installs a “smart switch” that cuts off the phone’s power supply when water is detected. This, it claims, “prevents any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry”. The advert looks remarkably similar to an authentic Apple advertisement, with the same plain white background and minimalist font and style. It seems some users were fooled into dunking their expensive gadgets into water to test out the promised feature, only to render their devices useless. One user wrote on Twitter: “Whoever said iOS 7 was waterproof **** you.” Another wrote: “OK whoever said iOS 7 is waterproof GO **** YOURSELF.” The spoof advert reportedly originated on the notorious online forum 4chan, which regularly undertakes campaigns that hijack
social media in order to trick the public. One hoax from 2012 involved
2013
members of the forum hacking the official Twitter account of ‘Entertainment Tonight’ and broadcasting a message that popstar Justin Bieber has been diagnosed with cancer. The message encouraged fans to shave their heads in support, with the the hashtag #BaldforBieber used to spread the hoax. The iOS 7 software provides a series of new features including an overhaul of the interface. It was released at the same time as the new iPhone 5S and 5C models. The 5S features a fingerprint unlocking device for extra security. However, a group of German hackers have found a way to bypass the measure. The group, known as the Chaos Computer Club, say that a fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, is enough to create a fake latex finger that could unlock the phone. Apple has not yet commented.

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Whatever views you hold on Spain as a place to live, or a holiday destination, there must surely be one aspect of the country that most of us as Northern Europeans would find disturbing, and that’s the bull fight. I say most, as there will always be those of the opinion its sport/culture/ art or whatever other ‘ostrich in the sand’ excuse they can come up with to avoid directly confronting it head on. Then there are, of course, the totally blood-thirsty types who would enjoy it just because it involves killing, on a particularly gruesome, hideous, and cheating level. Lots of blood, swordsmanship, natty costumes, ending with a huge dead mammal being hauled out of the arena to the sound of trumpet fanfares. This must surely have been what the Lions v Christians was like, in role reversal. We’re centuries apart, but the mindset has stayed the same. So, it was with slight trepidation I went along to Murcia bull ring one recent Sunday,-to stand outside, alongside SPANISH activists, to protest against
page 28
this hideous barbarism where bulls have Vaseline rubbed in their eyes to blur their vision and are usually drugged for good measure. I went with a fellow Welshwoman, but despite pleas via various media pages, we were the only Brits who turned up at the beginning, to support these Spaniards trying to drag their country into the 21st Century. An Englishwoman and her daughter joined us later, then a German lady, all reading about the event at the last minute. ‘Our government are Trolls!’ one woman announced. We protested with whistles, megaphones, banners and black t-shirts. We didn’t scream or yell, just called out ‘Guapa!’ to the dressed up chicas with their heels and handbags, some with young children in tow, many with seat cushions and picnics. This was the most shocking part. I can partially understand men going. It’s a given; - some men like to kill things, mutilate, torture and tease. But women? The nurturing sex? I mentioned my noncomprehension to a male photographer recording the protest. ‘Spanish women have no personalities, if the man says they must go, they go.’ Luckily, his girlfriend was a protestor. An old gent, shown a pamphlet, merely pointed out ‘That’s a human, that’s an animal.’ I captured the moment on camera when one young male activist broke down in tears during the first fanfare. If I had gone to comfort him, I too, would have cried. We met a student outside a café, who had six American female friends watching. He’d refused to go.

Six bulls died. Candles were lit on the pavement. I could barely believe I was yards away from this ‘Death in the afternoon’ segregated only by architecture. We mustn’t forget the horses. Their vocal chords cut so they don’t scream when the bull attacks, with many fatally gored. Brits are funding this via the EE Cap fund to the tune of 29,000,000 Euros filtered down via ‘agriculture’. I have the report. Something to think about.

They are still in paid kennels and he has asked us to help try to re home them as he can not keep paying for kennelling and would rather not go down the route of having them put to sleep, also he is too ill to look after them in the United Kingdom.
Painters Acosta was founded by Pedro Jose Acosta Garcia in the sixties. It was one of the pioneering companies in the region. Born in Mazarrón in 1942, he studied sign writing and delineation in Barcelona. He started painting when he was very young and more than 30 years ago had his first exhibition. Those of you who have been here a while, may remember his participation in 1985 in Mazarrón’s first group exhibition of painters that brought Mazarrón continued work in relation to the town’s visual arts. He has had several exhibitions in Spain and abroad and worked for many different professionals and his most remarkable work was the restoration of the local monastery. He also taught many of the painters who are working today in this
an exsisting colour or creating a unique one, they would always contact Pedro José. He was a specialist in accurately creating any colour required. Years ago colours were created from a white base adding dyes in powder form. Pedro, his eldest son, still does this today, although the dyes are now modern and in liquid form.
He has four sons and they have all been painters: Pedro, born in 1967, has led the company since he was 18 years old due to his father’s ill-health. His father taught him sign writing allowing him to intervene in the restoration process of the Immaculate Convent and the Church of St. Anthony in Mazarrón. Pedro has combined his other passion, football with painting since a young age and he still runs the Acosta painting company and is the trainer of a youth football team in Mazarrón town. Juan Manuel was born in Mazarrón in 1968; he is a self-taught amateur painter. He has participated in many local competitions with his paintings and has had numerous local exhibitions. Santos was born in 1973 and left the painting company to become a taxi driver. And Danny, the youngest, was born in 1980, a young and professional vibrant painter loved by all and currently enjoying working abroad. You can contact Pedro on pedroacostaballesta@hotmail.es

Homemade toffee apples
Working quickly and carefully, dip and twist each apple in the hot toffee until covered, let any excess drip away, then place on the baking parchment to harden. You may have to heat the toffee a little if the temperature drops and it starts to feel thick and viscous. Leave the toffee to cool before eating. Can be made up to 2 days in advance, stored in a dry place.
Maple-mustard pulled pork
Ingredients 500g pack bread mix oil, for greasing 8 good-quality sausages, cooked following pack instructions and cooled a little flour, for dusting 50g garlic butter, melted 6 spring onions, finely sliced 200g mature cheddar, grated Method Make up the bread mix following pack instructions. Set aside somewhere warm-ish to rise, in a bowl covered with oiled cling film, while you get everything else ready. Slice the cooked sausages into just under 1cm slices. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a rectangle roughly 50 x 30cm. Brush with half the garlic butter and scatter over the spring onions, cheese and sausages. Roll up the dough tightly from one of the longest sides, like a Swiss roll. Use a sharp, floured knife to cut the roll into 12 pieces. Wipe the holes of a 12-hole muffin tin with a little more melted butter. Push a roll of bread, cut-side up, into each hole. Dab the remaining butter over the tops, and cover

Ingredients 8 Granny Smith apples 400g golden caster sugar 1 tsp vinegar 4 tbsp golden syrup Method Place the apples in a large bowl, then cover with boiling water (you may have to do this in 2 batches). This will remove the waxy coating and help the caramel to stick. Dry thoroughly and twist off any stalks. Push a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Lay out a sheet of baking parchment and place the apples on this, close to your stovetop. Tip the sugar into a pan along with 100ml water and set over a medium heat. Cook for 5 mins until the sugar dissolves, then stir in the vinegar and syrup. Set a sugar thermometer in the pan and boil to 140C or ‘hard crack’ stage. If you don’t have a thermometer you can test the toffee by pouring a little into a bowl of cold water. It should harden instantly and, when removed, be brittle and easy to break. If you can still squish the toffee, continue to boil it.

Ingredients 200g sea salt 300g light muscovado sugar 2kg/4lb 8oz piece pork shoulder 100ml maple syrup 100g wholegrain mustard 2 tbsp English mustard powder Method Mix the sea salt and 200g of the sugar in a large food bag, add the pork and coat it well. (If you don’t have a bag, rub over the pork in a dish and cover with cling film.) Leave in the fridge overnight. The next day, remove the pork and wipe down the meat with kitchen paper. Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1. Mix the remaining sugar, the maple syrup, mustards and some ground pepper. Rub half the mixture over the pork and sit it on a rack in a roasting tin. Roast for 6 hrs. Spoon the remaining maple mixture over the pork and roast for 1 hr more. Rest the meat for 30 mins on a plate loosely covered with foil. To serve, tear the pork into big fat chunks and, after skimming the surface, spoon over any juices from the tin.

Autumn is well and truly on the way now, with a mix of heavy showers, lovely sunny days and cool nights; the perfect weather for all those pesky weeds to grow even more vigorously and yet also the perfect weather for planting… and transplanting! If anyone has a shrub or plant which has outgrown its space or is surplus to requirements, our team will happily come and remove it to a place where it can grow on for all to enjoy, or it can be left behind the ‘Welcome to C’ wall. We’d like to thank all of you for those plant donations so far received. Camposol seems to have a streetcleaning team assigned from the Ayuntamiento, which is very welcome, but until we know this is a regular route, our teams will continue their rota of weeding, spraying, cleaning and watering as part of the programme covering the whole sector. This month we have planted new trees, weeded and cleared the Petanca court, begun the ongoing repairs to pavements where there have been water leaks, along with the extra work of clearing silt washed onto the roads, due to those sudden storms – all strenuous tasks, so if you are nearby when our thirsty group are working in your road, and would like to offer them a drink, that would be most welcome! We’d like to welcome back Simon and Ken to our regular team, and appeal
to any more of you who would like to join our band of Wednesday morning volunteers, either on a regular or occasional basis – always rewarded with a free breakfast! Please contact us if you can spare a bit of time and energy, or just turn up at 9am at the Sensol Villa office (Old Masa office) and help improve ‘C’ even more while making new friends in the process! Our area is looking lovely for all the effort of those hard workers,
and of course because of the donations you all so freely give, either regularly to our scheme or just in the buckets; thank you. Before Our September Social Evening with Woody was a great success, and tickets are now selling for our Christmas Meal & Dance on 13th December at the Golf Club; live music is from Andy Jones. Time to Remember -
Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. (“At the 11th hour” refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. For us, this is a day when we can all remember someone close who we have lost, or just think of those who gallantly gave their lives for us in past conflicts. Here on Camposol, the tradition of a Remembrance Day Service is upheld and is welcome to all. The first service was held by Rev. David Holley, who at the time was Chair of the Garden Volunteers. It was his wish that people donate living plants, rather than wreaths at the service so that the Gardening Group could then make a start on creating a living park that we can now enjoy. Mayor Fransisco Blaya Blaya attended and presented the first plant. After the service the Council spent a couple of days with a JCB, clearing the weeds and levelling the ground so that work could be started. The Memorial Garden was obviously first on the list and all the volunteers worked hard in

3. When you eat, focus on your food. Local Yoga teacher Lisa has a studio in Isla Plana and has classes for all abilities. 5 WAYS TO BE MINDFUL. Have you ever been so distracted by your thoughts, worries, to do lists and responsibilities that you lose the simple joy of what is happening inside as well as the world around you? With the chaos of everyday life, being in the moment is very elusive for each of us. The concept of being in and experiencing the moment is called “mindfulness” The importance of being present is one of the first bits of yoga philosophy taught, but, for me, it can be difficult to put into practice, especially when I have a lot on my mind. (Just the saying “a lot on my mind’’ makes me feel heavy!) I try to be mindful and present as much as possible, but let’s be honest: When things get busy, it sometimes feels like I’m just going through the motions, rewarding myself by checking something off my mental checklist instead of slow, deep breaths. I know it’s not realistic for me to be present every minute of every day. But, I also know that even when I’m busy, I can incorporate mindfulness as often as possible by remembering my purpose at regular intervals. 1. Set an alarm as a reminder. I caught onto this when one of the applications on my new (android?) phone started sending me a notification at the same time everyday. At first I found the alarm really annoying; I kept meaning to change the setting (although to be honest I was not sure how to!). But then I realized I can use it as a cue to pause for just three deep breaths before I go back to what I’m doing. 2. Tune into sensation. There’s a reason yoga poses shift your attention into the present moment—there’s so much sensation happening in the body, it’s hard for the mind to wander to relive the past or plan the future. But you don’t have to be stretched out on a yoga mat to experience this. Whether it’s the air
It’s not a good idea to try and multitask at the dinner table. A few nights ago I thought I’d send a quick email as I was eating my soup. It was bad enough that I didn’t enjoy my dinner as much as I could have, but I also ended up dribbling onto my keyboard. I’m trying to do better. Whenever I can, I leave all my gadgets in a different room as I prepare and eat my food. 4. Use your commute. I work close to home, so my “commute” is just a two minute walk from my house to the yoga studio or a short drive to the church in the village. However I still find myself behind the wheel a lot running errands, etc. Driving is one of those times we have to be mindful of what we’re doing anyway (ideally), so why not use it as a time to check in with your breath and be present, too? I leave the radio off. I feel the steering wheel move underneath my hands. I appreciate what’s around me, the vast sky, the sea. the palm trees and at the moment those amazing multicoloured sunsets. This awareness of our surroundings, this appreciation of what’s around you can also be applied to those who have a love of walking. Instead of constant chatter both in the mind and outwards with colleagues, on occasions try and just view your surroundings without mental or vocal comment. 5.Create morning and evening rituals. Recently I’ve been writing in a journal my one happiest moment at the end of each day, then I close my eyes and take a few deep, appreciative breaths. Whatever ritual you choose, building it into your schedule makes mindfulness a priority and it can set the tone for the rest of your day. For me, that can make all the difference between moving with grace or in a frantic, unproductive panic. How do you incorporate moments of mindfulness throughout your day? lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es
Walnuts have amazing health benefits. Walnuts improve cardiovascular function and have wonderful anti-inflammatory properties. But did you know that walnuts could help you get a better night’s sleep and help lower risk of weight gain? Nuts have gotten a bad rap for being too high in fat, but the truth about nuts is that nuts, especially walnuts, are a powerhouse of nutrition. Here are some healthy reasons to get more walnuts into your diet. Walnuts Improve Sleep Do you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Walnuts can help; here’s why. The body’s pineal gland produces the hormone melatonin that induces sleep and helps regulate sleep. This hormone is found in walnuts--making walnuts a great evening or bedtime snack for improving your sleep. Walnuts Are Dieter-Friendly Although high in fats and concentrated in calories, the fats in walnuts are healthy fats. And walnuts are a great source of fibre and protein. As a result, eating walnuts helps you feel full and feel satisfied. This is good news for dieters. Walnuts Provide Antioxidant Defence Walnuts are a great source of antiinflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, an essential fatty acid that the body can’t manufacture. Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant defence protects healthy cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Some conditions that walnuts provide defence against are eczema, psoriasis, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis. But most notably, the photochemical ellegic acid helps support the immune system by preventing cancer cells from reproducing. Walnuts Lower Risks There are other health benefits to you from eating as little as one to two handful of walnuts a week. Walnuts have been shown to lower your risk of gallstones and lower your bad cholesterol. What’s more, the omega-3 fatty acids that lower LDL cholesterol are much higher in walnuts than other nuts. Walnuts Improve Blood Vessel Health Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent erratic heart rhythms, make blood less likely to clot, and impact how much plaque accumulates

Some are of course, but not too many, and this is a sign to bring out the members once again to get out the golf clubs, and challenge the local courses. To start off this year 24 members travelled to Aguilón Golf, which as usual is in tip top condition, to see who could come out on top. On arrival we found that the course management had booked another society in at the same tee off time and some confusion followed with buggies, and bodies in all directions. Eventually sanity ruled and we teed off on 10, which caught out one or two players as it is a short par three over water, yours truly included. The society treasurer, unable to play, due to a dodgy hip, must have smiled as he sat by the bar!!!…. at the balls disappearing in the lake, and points going astray.

Top 10 English cars from across the pond An American online magazine listed recently the top 10 English cars in thier opinion Morgan Plus 8
all-time British cars for the street or, when modified, the track. Healey’s costsaving approach depended on unabashed raiding of Austin and BMC parts bins, but the early Mk I Sprites of 1958-1961 featured an unmistakable front-end treatment: The Brits nicknamed these cars Frogeyes, whereas we nicknamed them Bugeyes. Regardless, these are the Sprites to own -- the ones wearing smiles, as big as their owners’. Lotus Elise
Take an unmistakably British roadster design, refrain from all but the most necessary updates to comply with regulations, build -- partially from wood -- in low numbers and, finally, become an icon. Now repeat. This was basically Morgan’s playbook for decades, and the team’s star forward was unquestionably the Plus 8. Built from 1968-2004 with few visual changes, this Moggie looked like ye olde sporting motorcar, but handled quite well and could keep up with many contemporary sports cars. Even today, there’s something quirky and fun about squeezing into one of these all-time British cars for a drive, especially the propane-fueled ‘84-’89 cars whose Buick-designed, Rover-sourced 3.5-liter V8 had fuel injection and a certain agility dulled by the bigger engines that soon followed.
Lotus founder Colin Chapman may have left us too soon, but his influence lives on with one of the all-time British cars worthy of being called a Lotus: the Elise. Chapman put Lotus on the map through obsessively cutting all unnecessary weight in his cars and tuning them for performance and handling. First produced for Europe in 1996, and finally appearing in the U.S. as a 2005 Series 2 model, some consider the Lotus Elise to be the car that saved the company’s bacon. Its success marked the longoverdue return of a genuine, reasonably affordable British sports car.

Austin-Healey Sprite
Donald Healey’s ultimate statement of affordable fun turns 50 this year, and even though the Austin-Healey Sprite’s demise came in 1969 (the less charismatic MG Midget cousin soldiered on another decade), it’s still one of the most popular
True, this is the model famous for its appearances as James Bond’s personal car, but even without all the 007 gadgets, an Aston Martin DB5 is quite a performer. Its 4.0-liter I-6 was smooth and powerful, offering up 282 horsepower and 8.1-second 0-60 mph acceleration on the way to a 143-mph top speed. This wasn’t half bad for 1963, and even now, a well-sorted DB5 doesn’t completely feel its age from behind the wheel. Production gave way to the DB6 in 1965, and the model’s celebrity association doesn’t make finding or affording one any easier. That’s not to say this all-time British car isn’t totally worth the effort.
Let’s make it perfectly clear: This is not about the squeaky-clean yuppie haulers that litter the suburbs. This is the British equivalent to America’s Jeep -- and to some Americans, the more desirable choice. Between 1948 and 1985, Series I, II and III Rovers were rugged and sparse, often matching the terrain they crossed. Like the Jeep, there was no pretense in the Rover’s presence, just incredible off-road ability. So as you might guess, this makes for a less than placid ride and handling on pavement. For the most agreeable compromise, shop for later Series IIIs from ‘82’85 with their stronger half shafts and

It was a tough call whether to recognize the impact of the 1920s 4.5-liter Blower Bentley or to celebrate the contemporary Continental GT coupe. In the end, the GT -- even if derided by some as a “German Bentley” due to the marque’s VW ownership -- takes the honor. Short of supercars at twice the price, there just aren’t many modern cars that make the statement of the Continental GT. Luxury and performance credentials are implied at a glance and immediately substantiated by the driving experience. Triple-digit speeds are attainable in a flash, but the whole affair is drama-free from inside the well-appointed cabin. Truly, that qualifies this all-time British car as a Bentley. Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II
2013
Today’s Phantom sedans and convertibles are impressive, but only time will tell whether their legends compare to the Silver Cloud’s. From 1959-1962, this car was the modern link to the marque’s earliest models that amazed buyers with durability, refinement and quiet, fuss-free operation. The Silver Cloud II featured understated improvements in cabin and exterior design elements that would live on in later cars for decades. Speaking of long-lived traits, the introduction of the Silver Cloud II also marked the debut of the 6.2-liter V8 and this all-time British car’s “adequate” horsepower.
to run with them. Jaguar press materials claimed 150 mph was possible, and if this was a little optimistic, it wasn’t off by much. Owners today probably aren’t as keen to explore their all-time British cars’ upper limits, given the strong market and consistent demand. Earlier E-Type models from ‘61-’64 are seen as more desirable due to the covered headlamps and the entertaining 3.8-liter I-6 engine.
made a name for itself in the racing world. Sales in the U.S. never matched those overseas, and tightening federal regulations didn’t help; so finding a decent ‘60-’67 model wasn’t exactly easy. MG TC
Mini
E Type
For many enthusiasts, this is not a British car, this is the British car. Even Enzo Ferrari remarked that it was the most beautiful car ever made, upon its 1961 release. He wasn’t alone in this sentiment, as the immediately popular E-Type not only looked stylish enough to play with a Ferrari, it had the power
New MINI Coopers are typically dwarfed by just about anything on four wheels -- except maybe for the legend it’s based upon. And while the new car at least deserves an honorable mention in a review of all-time British cars, the original 1959 car made it all possible, even if it was somewhat by accident. Sir Alec Issigonis was only acting on orders to design a fuel-efficient car, not trying to create a legend -- but it turned out that both happened in the process. Thrift-minded consumers and celebrities alike celebrated the Mini, and it also
You have to wonder what the state of sports cars would be today without the 1945-1950 MG TC. On its own, frankly, it was nothing spectacular. However, MGs were nothing like the typical cars across the pond, so they became a hit with American GIs abroad. Some brought the little TCs home after World War II, while others quickly bought them as dealers sprang up. Regardless, the acceptance of the unconventional car within such a car-centric culture is likely to be a major factor in what followed here and around the world.

Hidden charges – don’t they drive you mad? how can a return flight that starts off showing a price of, say, 48E have mysteriously increased to 148E by the time you come to put your payment details in? A garage that advertises “servicing from 50E plus IVA” magically produces a bill for 450 E when you go to collect the car – parts and labour were more than expected….apparently! What are you supposed to tell them to do – “unwork” and put the parts back on the shelf? And – I’m already ahead of you – what about financial services? Spain Considers Minimum Wage Freeze The Spanish Government is looking at freezing its minimum wage - a sum which comes in at just €21.51 Spain’s conservative government is considering freezing the country’s national minimum wage in 2014. If that happens, people would continue to get by on just €645.30 a month, or €21.51 a day — enough to cover two movie tickets, or four McDonald’s Happy Meals. This is is also just €2.68 an hour for an eight-hour day. Spain last froze its minimum wage in 2012 while the minimum monthly salary went up by 3.9 cents, or 0.6 percent in 2013. The Spanish minimum wage is almost the same as the Greek figure, which is €683.76. In France, the minimum wage is €1,430 before tax and in Italy, this figure is €880, or €5.50 and hour. Portugal is the only country in Western Europe with a lower minimum wage — €565.83.
Selling Up In Spain For many different reasons we have seen a large number of Brits selling properties in Spain over the last 24 months. Currencies Direct have helped hundreds of people to maximise the sterling they receive when repatriating their funds back to the UK. Fee-Free Bankers Drafts and Transfers When you receive payment for your property in Spain it is likely that the buyer will settle with a banker’s draft, banks in Spain can charge up to 1.25% of the value of the draft to deposit it into your own account. On a property of €200,000 this could cost you up to €2500! If you take a Euro bankers draft to the UK to deposit, the charges are even higher and it can take up to 8 weeks to clear the draft and you are likely to receive a very poor exchange rate from your UK bank.
Property, Financial and Legal Currencies Direct have a developed a unique national agreement with la Caixa bank – the largest savings bank in Europe. If you are registered with Currencies Direct you can open a “la Caixa” Currencies Direct account for free and start receiving a number of key benefits. For those depositing a Spanish bankers’ draft the most immediate benefit is that la Caixa will waive the usual fees – so you will pay nothing to deposit your cheque. Along with this benefit there are no charges to send money to Currencies Direct and no receiving fees in any UK bank when you make transfers using Currencies Direct. Your online banking (if you require), is in English and you benefit from La Caixa’s network of more than 5500 branches across Spain. Peter and Susan Bishop used the service when they wanted to send funds back to the UK. They were really impressed with Currencies Direct:“the speed and
efficiency delivered by Currencies Direct and their arrangement with la Caixa made our transfer back to the UK very simple and ensured we had no banking fees” Currencies Direct has been established in Spain for more than a decade and we’ve helped thousands of people to save serious money on their property purchases and sales. We have offices in four locations covering the key areas on the coastline where we find most Brits are likely to settle. PALS EVENTS 2013
This month we have been busy with fundraising for a very special donkey who came to us late last month. His name is Twiglet and he has a very bad break on his left front leg, a break that has been allowed to heal wrongly, leaving him with pain and in difficulty when walking. I was contacted by the police to say that there was a donkey in need in Mazarron, so I met up with them and followed them to the location. Twiglet was there, near a settlement of gypsies, but they denied that he was their donkey… Kevin and I loaded Twiglet into the horsebox and off we went back home, and he had a ‘comfortable’ night on a bed of hay with plenty of food and water. We took him to the vets the next day and they took lots of photos and x-rays to try to discover the extent of his injury. The news was good and bad… it was a clean break so it could be fixed, but it was going to cost €2,500 for the operation and after-care. After asking our Facebook fans what we should do, the answer was a resounding YES to the operation, and so commenced the Twiglet fund!!! So many people donated both large and small amounts, but we knew we would need something more - an online auction seemed like just the thing! Twiglet Well, the auction finished, and I’m happy to report that we now have raised a staggering €3,053.50!!!
To remind you we are at SaraLaras on a Wednesday afternoon 1 till 3 or Saturday morning at the Trevi from 11 till 1.30 or call me on 626 460 465.

Tommy Cooper A local policeman had just finished his shift one cold November evening and was at home with his wife. “You just won’t believe what happened this evening , in all my years on the force I’ve never seen anything like it.” “Oh yes dear, what happened ?” “I came across two guys down by the canal, one of them was drinking battery acid and the other was eating fireworks.” “Drinking battery acid and eating fireworks!! What did you do with them ?” “Oh that was easy, I charged one and let the other off.”
