JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Well here we are in November! As the year draws to a close our community remains a hive of activity! Here at the news desk we seem to be inundated with news and events from local charities, groups, and associations! It’s great to see so many people involved with so many good causes, and keeping busy doing great work! The community spirit shown by so many in the aftermath of the D sector disaster was inspiring. As those affected go about putting their homes and lives back together we received a number of emails and letters on the subject. One letter stood out however, and concisely summarises what went wrong, why it went wrong, what steps had already been taken by residents to prevent it, and who should be held accountable. You can read this letter later in the magazine. Another hot topic in the area at the moment is the Camposol District and Independent Party, or CDIP for short. Many people have commented on their presence in The Journal over the last few months and I have been asked several times why The Journal has chosen to become politically bias in our support of the CDIP. To clarify, The Journal has no alliance with any political party whatsoever. We remain completely neutral, and any CDIP publicity or newsletters that you see printed here have been paid for by CDIP funds. My comments in last month’s editorial and via our Facebook and Twitter pages have only been to encourage people to attend their meeting to hear their manifesto. By hearing in person, their goals, aims and objectives, then one can form their own opinion to support the CDIP or not. But by listening to them first hand, people can make an informed and educated decision, instead of hearing information hot off the rumour mill, which is all too often the case. I hope that you enjoy reading this month’s magazine as much as we have enjoyed making it. See you in December, Robert Rutherford

minister in the Australian capital of Canberra. The agreement will mean Spaniards aged 18 to 31 will be able to live, work and study in Australia for 12 months.

What I enjoyed the most about using Social Media over the last year was being able to work alongside some great people such as the Whiting family from TJ Electricals who supplied our competition prize. They are friendly and helpful without exception, and it is always service with a smile. (As you can see by Jeff´s face in the photo!!)

The visa allows holders to work full time as long as they don’t clock up more than six months with a single employer. They can also study for up to four months in the same course. Under the visa conditions, holders can also leave the country and return on multiple occasions.

The 2014 Magazine Publisher Awards took place on the 3rd of October in the United Kingdom with magazines from around Europe and Australia in attendance. The Journal had been nominated for awards in several different categories, but on the night we made the shortlist in the 2 categories of “Best Front Cover” and “Best Social Media Presence”. To reach the final 8 in both these categories was an achievement in itself.

“It’s a first step. It’s only 500 visas, which seem too few to me and I hope the number will increase soon,” said Spanish Foreign Minister Manuel José GarcíaMargalllo after signing the agreement in Canberra. I want to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in helping us win this award: Our advertisers, our readers, and to all those who “Like” our Facebook page. For those of you who haven’t yet “Liked” our Facebook page then please do so! On Facebook, search for “The Journal Spain” and click on the “Like” button it’s as simple as that. Why would you like our Facebook page? If you like up to the minute news, recipes, weather alerts, jokes, access to my blog, stunning photography from around Spain, photos of cuddly animals doing silly things, then you will enjoy our page! You can also follow us on Twitter @ TheJournalSpain.

I was absolutely delighted to be named as the outright winner of the “Best Social Media Presence” category! Our Facebook page over the last year has proved to be a great way of interacting

Australians will also have the same privileges under the agreement signed by Spain’s Foreign Minister.

The visa scheme will be up and running within 12 to 18 months although provisional arrangements could be in place by as early as the end of the year, Spain’s ambassador to Australia Enrique Viguera said. With youth unemployment in Spain currently running at over 50 percent — against 6.1 percent in Australia — the news is likely to be well received. However, there are conditions. The visa is not renewable and applicants are expected to arrive with A$5,000 (around €3,500). They should also have “functional” English and meet educational requirements. These requirements for Spaniards are yet to be published, but El reports suggest that students should have completed at least two years of a tertiary qualification. Visa numbers are limited as well, with many of the first batch expected to be snapped up by Spanish students currently in Australia. Spain already has similar arrangement in place with Canada (1,000 visas per year) and New Zealand (200 visas a year).

Gota Fria In Mazarron I am writing in respect of the Gota Fria which occurred in the Mazarron area on Thursday 25th September at about 6pm in the evening. This resulted in a major flood within D Sector, Urbanization Camposol where enormous damage was done to properties, cars and the infrastructure. Thankfully no lives were lost. Before I continue with the point of my letter I would like to give tribute to the local council, bomberas and emergency services who have reacted in a quick and effective manner to not only support the people effected but also undertake action to clear up the devastation and make the streets passable again. This flood has been declared a natural disaster but even though caused by a nature this distaster is very much man made and those responsible need to be made accountable for their actions or should I say lack of actions. D Sector Camposol was constructed on top of an important rambla that collected the rainfall from the surrounding hills and valleys and allowed it to run safely down to the coast. In 2003, Grupo Masa, the developers of Camposol, started to build on Sector D, Camposol and in their greed to make more profits decided to fill

page 6

in the rambla and build directly on top of it. After the construction was started the Confederacion Hydrografica was made aware of this and instructed Grupo Masa to stop this construction and make an alternative way for the water, the rambla previously collected, to flow across this area. Grupo Masa decided that the best way was to excavate a trench and put in three large pipes from one side of the building area to the other. It was impossible to take a direct route as some villas had already been constructed so the pipes were set out in a zig zag fashion around the villas and ran for nearly one kilometer. In 2009, after problems with heavy rains causing flooding in the streets, the local community realised that this pipe network wasn´t working and approached the Mazarron Mayor, Mr Blaya Blaya, about the problem. He told them that there was little he could do and they should speak with the Confederacion Hydrografica who were responsible for all waterways. The local Camposol Residents Association arranged a meeting with the Confederacion Hydrografica in Murcia in September 2009 and provided proof of flooding and the construction of the pipes to their representative. The Confederacion agreed that this solution was not acceptable and they

www.thejournalspain.es

assured everyone that they would take the necessary actions to ensure that the flooding was prevented. Since this date, Grupo Masa has been thrown off of Camposol, Mr Blaya Blaya has been replaced by Mr Campillo, who was also made aware of the problem several years ago and the Confederacion Hydrografica although refusing to sign off the local Plan Parcial until the problem was resolved have failed to follow through with their promises and demand that the work was done. This infrastructure problem has to be resolved. Tough decisions have to be made and the funds made available to get the necessary work done straight away. Unless this happens it is guaranteed that tomorrow, next week, next year or possibly in five years time we will have another Gota Fria in the local area. Next time it may be bigger and unlike on this occasion where no lives were lost, next time there maybe. Thankyou Greg Green Resident Sector D, Urbanization Camposol

Game of Thrones’ starts shooting in Spain

Film crews have begun shooting part of the fifth season of popular US fantasy television series “Game of Thrones” in the southern Spanish city of Seville, delighting local authorities who expect a tourism boost. Onlookers held up umbrellas to protect themselves against driving rain as they tried to look over a pastel coloured synthetic canvas set up around the gardens of the Real Alcazar palace. The barrier was set up to keep plot details of the Home Box Office series secret. The palace, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture in old Seville packed with columned courtyards and elaborately tiled halls, said on its website that it will undergo “partial closures” during the filming of the series. Producers have reportedly obtained special permission to tint the waters of the pools of the palace’s courtyard gardens dark blue for one scene of the fifth season of the series, which started filming in Northern Ireland earlier this year. The Real Alcazar is one of Seville’s top tourist attractions. It draws over 3,000 visitors a day. The oldest parts of the

sprawling complex date back to the 10th century. Seville, with its picturesque alleys, hidden plazas and flower-decked patios, already draws about two million tourists a year and local officials are optimistic that the series will bring even more visitors. “We will have to endure some inconvenience, taking into account the possible generation of jobs and the impact on tourism that this will have,” Seville mayor Juan Ignacio Zoido said. The Croatian city of Dubrovnik, where three seasons of the popular show were filmed starting in 2011, reported a jump in visitor numbers after the episodes aired and special “Game of Thrones” location tours sprung up. Season four of the series, a tale of battles and betrayal mixed with a generous helping of sex and bloodshed, averaged 18 million weekly viewers in the United States, making it one of the most watched series on television. After filming wraps up in Seville, the crew will later this month move on to Osuna, a small hilltop town surrounded by olive groves located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) away which will reportedly serve as the backdrop for a battle scene.

the town are already up by around 15 percent since producers of the series announced at the start of July that it would film part of the fifth season there. Hotels in the town of around 18,000 residents are fully booked during the second half of October when filming is expected to take place, while a tapas bar in the town has introduced a special menu with dishes named after “Game of Thrones” characters. As Spain grapples with an unemployment rate of 24.5 percent, the second-highest in the European Union after Greece, producers did not struggle to find extras seeking a few days work on the set. Producer Fresco Film services based in Malaga said it received over 86,000 applications to audition for extra roles. The company selected 4,000 people to come to auditions and will hire 550 people to work as extras per day over 17 days of filming, said the company’s executive producer Peter Welter.

Home Window, Door and Conservatory Tinting by Nigel Pugh of NPSkinz I understand just how hard people work in order to create their dream home in the sun. While living with 300 days of sunshine offers plenty of positives for your

home, there is a downside to letting the sunlight shine in: increased energy costs, excessive heat, glare, and the fading of interior furnishings. Tinting the windows of your home helps eliminate or reduce these effects. I use only the highest quality SunTek window film which allows you to bask in the benefits of your windows, transforming the comfort and efficiency of your home. First Rains Of The Autumn Some of you got more rain than you wanted or required, others got just about enough. Normally after the first rain of the season all that dust settles after the dry summer and I get motivated to do some spring / autumn cleaning, as seems worth doing before the log fires get going next month. Then you are back to a losing battle again with dust and more dust. So I started washing the curtains and curtain poles, cushion covers and runners etc as this weekend has had good drying days. That’s the easy bit. Now I have had a good look at the shutters and windows and made a start on them. Should not have opened the windows, as the window sills need doing. Oh no! why did I look up? the reckas need a clean too. From putting a few things into the washing machine and letting it do the work for me I seem to have hours of hard work ahead of me. As I get my next bucket of clean water I started thinking I would much rather be down the village in the bar with my friends and a nice glass of wine. So that’s my plan for next year, but as I have started I will finish this roller coaster of jobs this year. Why did I decide to do the bedrooms too? Opened the shutters in the guest

2014

bedrooms and where I have had a lot of visitors this year the bedspreads seem to need washing as well, so the mattress protectors and pillow protectors are now shouting at me, we need washing too. Did my best to ignore it all, but in for a penny in for the pound and my friends would have left the bar by now anyway. So now the washing machine is busy with more washing and I land up hoovering the mattresses and turning them too, as if I don’t have enough to do. In one of my bedrooms I have Mexican Distressed Waxed Pine Furniture, love it, does not show the dust -great stuff, but where someone has left the windows open, it has got the sun and faded a bit plus where they have not used the coasters for their drinks there are ring marks on the furniture. This is annoying me so off I go to find the linseed oil and another clean cloth to oil the furniture tops, this will remove the marks and where the sun has faded the colour it brings it all back looking as good as new. Good job done. I am now wondering if I will ever get finished and get to sit down tonight before going back to work tomorrow, when my husband

comes in from the garden wondering what time will dinner be! To be fair he had no idea what I had been up to, so I made a few suggestions which he could not have liked because he and dogs made a hasty retreat back to the garden. Dogs and husband returned half an hour later waving a bottle of wine in the door way as if it was a white flag, he’s not so daft after all. Had to laugh, so, tidy things away, Roy opened the wine, put a pizza in the oven and I relaxed with my long awaited glass of wine deciding I will do the finishing touches to the big clean next week. BUT I will be going down to the bar and joining my friends what ever happens next weekend. For the time being Cheers! Written by Chris of Furniture Plus.

Humanists of Murcia Philosophers Club

This month there was the inaugural meeting of the Humanists of Murcia Philosophers Club. Ten members and friends attended. Vincent Cloney chaired the meeting and guided the disparate contributions through the one and a half hour session. The topics covered the meaning of life from the ancient philosophers to the modern times. The use of social media and censorship imposed by press barons and the search for the truth to the point where news became views were discussed in depth. What is the function of government on moral issues and should uniformed public be left to pick up the information from where ever it could i.e. social media. The right to privacy, trolling and social networking was covered. How independent was the BBC? There were many views. Political correctness was defended when the person being offended had no control over the issue e.g. race, sex or colour. But one should have the right to question faiths and religions that they were are a choice not inherited. It was considered a right to question a belief system but not to personalise the criticism. Some time was spent considering whether there had been advances since the early philosophers but even if not apparent it was important to keep challenging. The next meeting will be Monday 17 November 2014. For more information on the subject and the location go to the Humanists of Murcia web site www. bolnuevo.com and click on Humanists.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur. When you discover you’ve been burgled As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing

Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

“KEEP SMILING THROUGH”

As this year is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One, an ensemble of singers, actors, poets and writers have put together a programme to pay tribute to the British men and women whose lives were affected, not only by that war but also by World War Two. We wanted to give the British ex-pat community living in the Murcia Region of Spain an opportunity to commemorate this momentous year and to join us in singing many of the wellknown songs of those two periods including “Rose of England”, “We’ll Meet Again”, “Lili Marlene”, “White Cliffs of Dover” and many, many more. The programme also contains humorous sketches and poetry and also some moving verses, some written by a local poet. You will hear what happened when a British soldier came face-to-face with a German soldier during the bombings of Saint Hilaire in France in 1944. It’s not all about the men in the Services though – you will hear how an Evacuee survived her years away from her family in the early 1940s and how friendships were made in the Air Raid Shelters. Souvenir Programmes will be on sale with articles on the French Resistance, a cat that served on a war ship during World War 2 and was awarded a medal, life in the trenches and other interesting articles. And as we are nearing Remembrance Sunday, poppies will also be on sale. “Keep Smiling Through” is being performed at La Molata Social Centre, Los Muñoces, Nr. Mazarrón, Murcia, Spain on the 6th, 7th, 8th November at 7.30 pm and on Sunday the 9th November at 6.00 pm. Tickets are 5€ each and the proceeds will be donated to The Ex-Servicemen’s Association Mazarrón District. For tickets please send an email to keepsmilingthrough1914@gmail.com or telephone Pat on 644400123. Please note: tickets are sold out for the Friday and Saturday performances.

HELP FOR RITA CAMPAIGN

The long awaited Concert for the HELP for RITA campaign organised by registered charity HELPING HANDS finally arrived on 19th September. This involved lengthy planning and was only possible with the superb and generous assistance of the Ayuntamiento de Pulpi. Many readers will already be aware of the horrendous accident that Rita, at that time Treasurer of Helping Hands,

suffered in July 2013 whilst assisting another local Charity, San Animal Santuario, in a cat sterilisation program. After almost a whole year in various hospitals and rehabilitation centres Rita is now back in Spain. Sadly she now has tetraplegia with only very limited movement in her arms, and thus requires a lot of help with everyday life doing things that you or I simply take for granted. Helping Hands will of course continue to help her in future alongside their other campaigns to help people and animals. The event began at 4pm with an outside Fayre where stallholders were able to sell their products, followed at 6.30 by the Concert itself. First to perform were the Escuela Municipal de Baile de Pulpi an amazing display of dance from all three teams, infants, juniors and senior, delighting the audience.. Following on, were the beautiful tones of vocalist Kay Frances from Antas who kindly doubled her efforts by performing with the enthusiastic Julie Bruce Zumba Almeria later in the evening.

page 16

www.thejournalspain.es

Singer Songwriter Alex Scott had travelled down the coast to support the event and his talent, at a relatively young age, was quickly demonstrated as he sang several of his own songs whilst accompanying himself on the guitar. Next came the fabulous well known and well loved local artist, Steve Fisher who, as always, had the audience on their feet with his Rod Stewart tribute. The amazing JJ Jones, who has been the ultimate Neil Diamond Tribute for some 20 years, then gave his usual superb performance. JJ will shortly be commencing his annual tour of the UK with his fabulous 7 piece band. Then came the superb Finale featuring Simon Patrick, winner of the European

Elvis Tribute Awards. Guests were on their feet as his magnificent performance completed the Concert which ended with Artistes and Helping Hands Team members combing with their rendition of

in Spain. They have a charity shop in Aguilas, over 40 dogs, and 10 cats in their care (nearly all in foster homes) as well as various events planned for the never ending fund raising. Many hands make light work so if your hands have a few hours to spare each month please contact Roger (968 48 29 48) and don´t forget to Look out for these forthcoming events:

“ LEAN ON ME”. Helping Hands would like to extend a huge thank you to all who took part in making the Concert such a success: JUAN BAutistaLOPEZ OF THE AYUNTAMIENTO DE PULPI - who gave so much time and effort in the planning of the event.

Saturday 28th November, HILLBILLY ROCK NIGHT with THE PROSPECTORS DUO from Benidorm, at the Bar La Fuente, Purias, Lorca

AUDREY VOLLANS – also for giving her time, organisational and liaison skills to the concert and without whom the planning would have been so much more difficult. MICHELLE MILES, MilesBetterEntertainment, who, in addition to donating her skills during the organisation of the concert, co-hosted the evening with Helping Hands member and Profesora de Idiomas, Ana Mari

ALL THE ARTISTES – who donated their time and skills for this very worthwhile cause and who made the night such a success.

For more information on these events, please call Linda (968 48 29 48) or visit the Helping Hands facebook page.

Thanks must also go to all of those businesses and organisations who so generously donated Raffle Prizes for the Event, too many to mention but their kind generosity alone helped us to raise 500 euros at the concert. Helping Hands are now proud to announce that the proceeds from just the concert amounted to 2,900 euros. At the time of going to press, the fund currently stands at 5,500 euros. Some 2,800 euros has now been allocated to complete the huge cost of new vehicle adaptions & modifications thus enabling Rita and Edwin to take delivery and now travel without the need to rely on specialist taxi hire. Despite being very small Helping Hands achieve a lot and focus exclusively on helping organisations and those in need

Colin and Kate moved to Spain 10 years ago and 2 years later Stuart and Alix followed, with their two children Emily and Toby. They took over Alley Palais Bar and Restaurant in February 2009 and it fast became the Number 1 Family Entertainment Centre on Camposol. Nowadays it is run by Alix and with 4 bowling lanes, 7 large TV screens showing all sports, arcade games, 2 pool tables, 3 dartboards, an internet café and free Wi-Fi, there really is something for

everyone. They also boast a snooker room with 2 full size tables and are the only private member snooker club in the area. There is regular entertainment during the week and at weekends and as one of 3 “Camposol Triangle” bars, there are plans to bring back some of the most popular acts during the winter! In September 2012 Colin and Stuart became active members of the Camposol Fiesta Committee and it was soon after that they acquired their next Camposol based businesses, The Clubhouse Bistro and Sensol Golf Club now called Camposol Club de Golf. The Clubhouse has the most wonderful views across the Golf Course to the Sierra Mountains and since taking over in January 2013, it has become one of Camposol´s most popular venues. The Clubhouse Manager, Aaron Maul said “We have free entertainment every Saturday night and theme nights throughout the week including Steak Nights, Menu del Noche and a Music Jam Night. Such is our reputation for excellent food and service that our Sunday Carvery is fully booked almost every week, even during the summer”. It is also a regular meeting place and event venue for many of the local charities and organisations. The family´s latest enterprise, The New Royal, is their first outside of Camposol. The Royal is located by the sea, on the El Alamillo Plaza on the way to Isla

Plana, and has stunning views across the Mediterranean. Stuart said “We are really excited about our latest venture and have great plans for the future. We have made a few changes since we took over just a few weeks ago and there are several new faces in The New Royal Team. Tom Bridges, the new manager, is familiar to many on Camposol as he has worked with us for several years and regulars at The New Royal will vouch for Suitlana who has remained as our fabulous Chef. She has worked with us to devise new daily and Festive menus. “We are keeping some things though, like the weekly free entertainment. Tom has been gauging customer opinions and there is a real preference for live bands at The New Royal. We will be bringing back some of the regular favourites as well as a mix of other new and exciting acts. We are also keeping the essentially British theme and will continue to show live sports in the bar throughout the year” Mazarrón Entertainments really does have it all. Flying Cars Finally a Reality

Mark my word: A combination of airplane and motorcar is coming. You may smile, but it will come.” -- Henry Ford, 1940 Ever been hopelessly sandwiched in bumperto-bumper traffic and fantasized about flying far, far away? As in actually pressing a button that magically releases a glorious pair of wings from your vehicle, escaping the infuriating gridlock below? Then hang in there, weary road warriors. The car-plane of your wildest dreams could finally be here and taking flight soon. The “first genuine flying car” is now a reality, even if only as a prototype -- a fully functioning prototype, one that will

eventually even offer autopilot. The 19-foot-long, steel-framed blue and silver flying sports car weighs just 992 pounds, one-quarter of the weight of a Hummer H3. With a somewhat disappointing top flight speed of only 124 miles per hour, the single Rotax 912 engine equipped Flying Roadster isn’t exactly a speed demon. Its top speed on the asphalt is 99 miles per hour. Not bad, for a car that flies. All passengers have to do to extend the 27-foot wide (in total wingspan) collapsible wings and start the rear-mounted propeller is press the “transform” button, according to an article in Wired. Pretty cool, right? For down-to-Earth road travel, the four-wheeled Transformerlike Flying Roadster’s long, lightweight carbon-fiber patented wings neatly tuck away behind its angular, pod-like cabin. Once back to its car state, the sleek airplane-automobile hybrid is compact enough to parallel park on a crowded city street. A single steering wheel, also patented, is used to fly and drive the craft. AeroMobil co-founder and chief designer Stefan Klein imagined his first flying car 25 years ago as a way to escape the former Czechoslovakia. He has since piloted several concept versions of his dream car-plane crossbreed, along with a pre-prototype. Klein aims to fulfil his initial orders sometime in 2016.

called Xilloc printed her a new jaw out of laser-sintered titanium dust. Installation time: four hours. 3: Spinal Cage In France this summer, Medicrea made a “spinal cage” for a patient with a deformed spine. The new disk fit perfectly between the two affected vertebrae. 4: Tracheal Splint When an Ohio infant had problems with his windpipe in 2012, the University of Michigan printed a special supertiny tube to keep his airways open.

The Strange and Amazing New World of 3-D Printed Body Parts A few years ago, if a horrific infection ate your jawbone, doctors had to build makeshift mandibles from your fibula, a process that left you sliced open as surgeons painstakingly whittled away at replacement bone. Yech. Today they can just hit Control-P: Based on MRI and CT scans of your busted-up body parts, hyperspecialized 3-D printers produce custom replacements, no sculpture skills required. As biomedical engineer Scott Hollister says: “We don’t all have to be Michelangelos anymore.” And in October, engineers, medical device makers, and doctors will meet at the FDA in Maryland to discuss regulations for an industry that’s growing—one printable bone at a time.

5: Shoulder Joint A Belgian woman had lost bone in her shoulder this year. Mobelife engineers mapped the area to craft an implant that would fit the joint and not require removing any additional bone. 6: Hip Joint A congenital disease had eroded a Swedish teenager’s hip. In 2012 an implant based on CT scans of the affected area, also by Mobelife, got her walking again.

Volvos Will Soon Plot ‘Escape Routes’ to Avoid Wrecks Volvo wants to stop anyone from getting seriously injured or killed in its new cars by 2020, but

advanced air bags and blind-spot warning systems can only go so far. It needs cars that can detect, predict, and avoid trouble, all on their own. The carmaker is openly moving toward self-driving cars, and now it’s announced a new feature that will help it get there. In a few years, its cars will be equipped with computers that have a 360degree view of their surroundings, constantly scanning and evaluating what’s going on, and how to react if there’s trouble. The system, which is still at least five years from hitting showrooms, can detect potential accidents before they occur, even if they’re outside the driver’s line of sight. If an accident is imminent, the car can determine an “escape route” and auto-brake and even steer the car to avoid the accident. It’s the high-tech equivalent of Sylvester Stallone in that horrible movie Escape Plan: Always looking for a way out of trouble. The technology can identify different types of road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles—an important ability because they all act differently, at varied speeds, in different parts of the road. Scenarios are anticipated up to five seconds in advance, with alerts sent to the driver. If he doesn’t respond in time, the car takes action on its own. For Volvo Trucks, the technology is similar, but the application is different. Driver visibility in big rigs is more limited—and more important—than in automobiles. “Trucks are a different type of vehicle,” says Mansour Keshavarz, systems engineer at the company. “Their sheer size prevents them from carrying out severe avoidance maneuvers.” So, no Stallone-inspired escapes, just an extra focus on anticipating crashes before they happen.

1:Cranial Plate In 2013, Oxford Performance Materials createda new skull for a man who had lost 75 percent of his cranium. The material, polyetherketoneketone, encourages bone growth. 2: Jawbone An 83-year-old woman in the Netherlands had an infection in her jaw, but her age meant a 15hour replacement surgery would be risky. So in 2011, a company

Dawn Llewellyn-Price Flash Mobs have been ‘on trend’ for quite a while now, everything from frozen people in supermarket aisles, wedding proposals, airlines, (Cathay Pacific’s was pretty colourful and impressive) win a million at Changi airport, and Heathrow’s arrivals dance, they’ve all taken people by surprise around the world and been counted as a cheerful addition to our lives, even if You Tube is the closest you ever get to seeing one. I was lucky enough recently to rehearse for one, albeit for only an hour, in a huge function room at a hotel in Calpe. Yes, it was Medfest, annual week long dance holiday run by ClubMed, who fly in dancers from all over Europe, including Russia, and spend a week wearing them out physically and mentally (there’s vino involved) under the guise of a ‘holiday.’ Living here meant we weren’t going to go ‘just up the coast an hour’ and spend a week there, but we did want to visit friends over from Ceroc South Wales, our instructors Mark and Lyndsey, and friend’s Stephanie and Bethan.

So, on Virgoman’s birthday, we high tailed it up to Calpe, wound our way down the racing circuit roads into the tourist zone, and with the cleverness that sometimes emits from our Sat ‘Nag’ found the lovely hotel Diamante Beach, parking perfectly outside, and in we went in search of ‘Our Lot’, who were, oddly enough for a dance holiday, doing aqua aerobics in the pool. Lots of music surrounded the 620 dance holiday makers, in various states of dress and undress, as afternoons meant dancing poolside, so not unusual to see ‘proper’ dance shoes worn with bikinis or skimpy shorts, sequinned cowboy hats and brightly coloured shawls. But, come 4pm, it was upstairs with around 200 others, to the huge ballroom, where day five of flash mob practice was soon to commence. So, joining on the end of row three, or was it four? we attempted to pick up the steps in tune to Pitbull’s ‘Timber’ with a few cowboy ‘whoops’ and some hearty clapping mid way. We tried, we really did, but they had four days on us, so we declined to actually take part in the event( didn’t want to spoil the perfect choreography) and just enjoyed dancing among a crowd of Ceroc’ers again for the first time in months. Come 5pm, following a lengthy stride down the paseo at the tail end of the comet, we became handbag holders and cameramen for at least one end of the ‘surprise.’

So, on a sunny Spanish day, amidst the curious glances of holidaymakers, the ghetto blaster blasted, dancers became paired, and next to the beach, ‘Medfest’ Ceroc did its thing. ‘Whoop! whoop!’ indeed, as twirling, swirling, sweating dervishes danced to loud cheers and claps from the sidelines.

Watching holidaymakers loved it, an audience for the continuation on a private outside dance floor, with DJ and lighting, where I finally got to dance to David Bisbal’s ‘Amores Del Sur.’ A memorable birthday. Ole.

First they had the garden party, then on the following night attended a function on behalf of the Leos. (Did you know that when the disaster happened on D Sector, without any encouragement they went and did their best to help with the clean up? Then on Saturday it was a case of “Will we or wont we” go to the parade of Romans and Carthaginians, but at 4 in the afternoon we were told that it was on. So we went and everyone enjoyed the magnificent costumes and attire. The rain kept off and good time was had by all. The following Thursday we staged a horse racing night at the Trevi Bar and Restaurant. When we arrived we were told to find a seat as the management were going to do all the work themselves. The lions would like to thank everyone who has helped us . A very hearty thank you!

Hello Everyone We would like to start this off by saying how very sorry we are to everybody who has been affected by the severe weather and flooding, our thoughts are with you. We have so far escaped quite lightly and all the animals are safe and well if not a little damp. The good news we have for you this month is that thanks to all the kind people who follow and support us we have reached our goal with The Lana Appeal..I cannot say how grateful we and all the future dogs we rescue are. We will keep you updated of how the building is going and look forward to putting our plaque on the new quarantine area. I would like to concentrate this month on two of our longest residents who seem to keep being passed by for some reason. We have the beautiful Domino who is just a dream and has a face full of such character. He is a medium sized dog and very loving, although he has the face of an old man he is only a young chap and would thrive in a family environment, he almost looks like an overgrown long haired Jack Russell. Next we have Toc who arrived at ours absolutely covered in Tics and in a very poor state. I think the reason he keeps getting passed by is that he is just another medium sized black dog and some may say not the most handsome of chaps but to us he is a stunner and the beauty he has inside makes up for his somewhat average looks. He just needs to be given a chance and shown the love, affection and time that he so deserves. So please if you can find it in your heart or know someone who may be able to help these to long termers we know that they will reward you with plenty of love. As I say every month please don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, pop into one of our shops in Fuente Alamo or Mazarron where you will receive a warm welcome. Donations for the shop are always appreciated and for any larger furniture items we can always collect. I will of course be stood on the carpark of sector B Camposol between 11.30 and 1.30 every Monday if you want to hand your goods to me or if you just want a chat. Thank You All and stay dry and safe.

We would like to thank all those stall holders and supporters of our Table-Top event held on the 3rd October who helped Ann & Tony raised 180 Euros towards our cause. We would also like to thank all the stall holders who so kindly donated the remainder of stock that was unsold on the day; we are very much obliged to them. Thanks also to Peter Smith the photographer who came along to take photos of the event and also for kindly giving us his time for our Fashion Show event. This month we would also like to thank Marge and Arthur from Swap Tears for Smiles and everyone else who have donated children’s articles and toiletries. We’re appealing again for shampoo, shower gel, sanitary towels & nappies and as winter approaches we are anticipating the demand for blankets, quilts and rugs. Christmas is coming round fast and we will be distributing presents to children on 3rd, 10th and 17th December. Our Christmas Present Appeal will run throughout October and November so we have time to organise the distribution. It’s time to get those knitting needles out again!!! Chocolate treats and pens, pencils, pencil cases also make a great donation to this appeal being suitable for both boys and girls, young and old alike. The 6th October saw another crucial delivery from the Red Cross, 8.5 tons of aid food was received into our warehouse for us to distribute to those in need during the winter months. A reminder of our Christmas Dance on the 19th December at The Club House with music by Paul Michael for the price of 20 € which includes a thee course meal and is open to all, so please come along and support this event. Tickets are available from both shops and also from the Table-Top stall on Sector B commercial centre every second and last Friday in the month. Our white van is on the Sector A commercial car park on Tuesdays from 11.00pm until 1.00pm but is now also on the large car park on Sector B every Friday from 11.00am until 1.00pm for any donations you feel you would like to give us. Autumn is well and truly on the way now, with a mix of showers, sunny days and cool nights; After the devastating, heavy rains it’s perfect weather for all the weeds to grow even more vigorously and yet also perfect weather for planting…and transplanting! If anyone has a shrub or plant which has outgrown its space or is surplus to requirements, our team will happily come and remove it to a place where it can grow on for all to enjoy, or it can be left behind the ‘Welcome to C’ wall. We’d like to thank all of you for those plant donations so far received.

We’d like to appeal to any more of you who would like to join our band of Wednesday morning volunteers, either on a regular or occasional basis – always rewarded with a free breakfast! Please contact us if you can spare a bit of time and energy, or just turn up at 9am at the Sensol Villa office (Old Masa house) and help improve ‘C’ even more while making new friends in the process! Our area is looking really tidy once more after all the effort of those hard workers, and of course because of the donations you all so freely give, either regularly to our scheme or in the buckets; thank you.

Our teams continue their rota of weeding, spraying, cleaning and watering as part of the programme covering the whole sector but during the rains they have been checking and repairing tools and equipment, ready for the creation of more new flowerbeds edged with railway sleepers, one of which will be dedicated to the memory of the late Irene Jones. There has been much extra work this month for both the Maintenance Team and the volunteers, joined at various times by Mark, Paul, Sue, Ken, Simon, Phil, Mick, Caroline, Neil and Graham; ongoing repairs to pavements where there have been water leaks, and of course clearing tons of mud and stones washed onto the roads due to those sudden storms – really strenuous tasks, so we were extremely grateful for all the extra volunteered

Green Fingers Chairman, John Osborne, announced on 14th October that the Group will make a substantial donation to D Sector Disaster Fund, following the devastation caused by recent heavy rain. Green Fingers Committee felt they could not stand by whilst our neighbours sufferered. The money will come from funds raised in the weekly bucket collections and social events.

SolPellet Pellet Stoves Solpellet was formed to deal with the increased demand for economical, clean heating solutions in Southern Spain. It’s a myth that its warm all year round in Spain, those living here know just how cold it can get in the winter, especially in inland or elevated locations. Solpellet has the answer, following the trend of many northern European countries in the adoption of Wood pellets as a source of fuel. The last few years have seen fuel and energy prices rocket and gas, oil and

legal & registered seven years

electricity show little sign of ever being cheap again (if indeed they ever were). It’s time to look for alternative methods of heating and an increasingly popular contender is compressed wood, otherwise known as biomass or wood pellets.

Cheaper – The pellets are made from compressed sawdust from saw mills and timber yards. A 15kg bag costs between 3 and 5 euros and are roughly half the cost of the oil required to provide the same amount of heat.

Why pellets are better than traditional sources of heating:

Easier – The automatic control mechanism feeds the pellets from hopper to burn-pot means the fire is self-regulating. A timer allows programming of on and off times giving total control over the home’s heating.

Ebola virus People often ask me why facials are so important and it simply that an at-home routine definitely does not cut it. While it is good to practice a good skin care regime, it does not necessarily mean you should be skipping out professional treatment. Even though you might not suffer from severe conditions, your complexion will still benefit. Getting a facial every season is recommended to keep the skin balanced. Problematic and wrinkled skin should be treated monthly. These are some of the reasons why you should book an appointment: 1) Facials can actually clear your pores. A professional treatment will fully cleanse your skin in a way that you simply can’t at home 2) Better Looking Skin. there are many elements that can damage the appearance of the skin such as weather, natural ageing and poor diet. A facial treatment with high quality products can help your face absorb what it needs to replenish itself. 3) You are popping your zits wrong Don’t lie, you know you do it!! Every time you squeeze a pimple, you risk acne scarring and dark marks. You may find booking regular appointments will help eliminate any reason to pick and pop yourself 4) It is better than the beauty counter. providing personalized skin regime which will address your individual concerns.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is caused by a virus. It is a severe and often fatal disease. It can affect humans and other primates. Researchers believe that the virus first spreads from an infected animal to a human. It can then spread from human to human through direct contact with a patient’s blood or secretions. Symptoms of Ebola may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms usually include • Fever • Headache • Joint and muscle aches • Weakness • Diarrhea • Vomiting • Stomach pain • Lack of appetite Other symptoms including rash, red eyes, and internal and external bleeding, may also occur. The early symptoms of Ebola are similar to other, more common diseases. Health &Wellbeing Alongside of tomatoes, watermelon has moved up to the front of the line in recent research studies on highlycopene foods. Lycopene is a carotenoid phytonutrient that’s especially important for our cardiovascular health, and an increasing number of scientists now believe that lycopene is important for bone health as well. Health scientists are becoming more and more interested in the citrulline content of watermelon. Citrulline is an amino acid that is commonly converted

Recent studies have confirmed the nutritional importance of allowing a watermelon to fully ripen. For example, research has shown that the biggest jump in lycopene content occurs at the time when a watermelon’s flesh turns from white-pink to pink.Yet when that flesh continues to ripen, resulting in a colour change from pink to red, the lycopene content becomes even more concentrated. Prior to ripening, when the flesh of a watermelon is primarily white in colour, its beta-carotene content is near zero. Even when allowed to ripen to the white-pink stage, a watermelon still contains very little of its eventual beta-carotene content. But as it moves from white-pink to pink to red, the beta-carotene content of a watermelon steadily increases. Like lycopene and betacarotene, total phenolic antioxidants in a watermelon also increase consistently during ripening, all the way up until the appearance of fully red flesh. The bottom line: eating a fully ripe watermelon can really pay off in terms of nutrient benefits. Please see our section called “How to Select and Store” to learn about determining a watermelon’s ripeness before you purchase it.

by our kidneys and other organ systems into arginine (another amino acid). The flesh of a watermelon contains about 250 millligrams of citrulline per cup. When our body absorbs this citrulline, one of the steps it can take is conversion of citrulline into arginine. Particularly if a person’s body is not making enough arginine, higher levels of arginine can help improve blood flow and other aspects of our cardiovascular health. There’s also some preliminary evidence from animal studies that greater conversion of citrulline into arginine may help prevent excess accumulation of fat in fat cells due to blocked activity of an enzyme called tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, or TNAP.

Big or small, seedless or not, red or yellow -- nothing says summer like a big, juicy watermelon (or a seed-spitting contest off the deck). But there is a lot more to this melon than water. Turns out it’s packed with phytonutrients, vitamins A and C, and a good hit of potassium, plus some vitamin B6 and thiamine -- everything except fat, sodium, and calories. Cool.

daily vitamin C quota. Fight infection: Two cups of the juicy red melon also supply nearly a quarter of your daily beta carotene, which your body uses to make vitamin A. Running low on beta carotene can leave you vulnerable to viral infections and vision trouble. Heal faster: Watermelon (especially yellow-orange varieties) is one of the rare food sources of citrulline, an amino acid used in wound healing and cell division. Slurp up the juice, but bite down, too: There’s extra citrulline in the white and green part that most people toss. Pickled rinds anyone? Soothe stress: Watermelon is a good source of potassium, which helps control blood pressure -- making it the perfect snack for stressful family reunions. Quench cravings: There are only 96 calories in 2 fill-you-up cups of sweet watermelon, and its high liquid content makes you feel full. So start your dessert course with a wedge and you’ll be less likely to go overboard on Aunt Edith’s brownies. Got leftovers? Make these: EASY WATERMELON SLUSHIES 4 servings 3 cups diced watermelon 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup crushed ice 1/2 cup water Dash of black or cayenne pepper -optional flavor twist for heat lovers Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor and mix into a frosty slush.

Stay healthier: Watermelon has lots of lycopene, a key plant antioxidant that is famous for fighting heart disease and prostate cancer. Tomatoes are usually considered the lycopene all-stars, but you have to cook them in a little oil to release it. Watermelon, on the other hand, needs no cooking to unleash its lycopene. And, cup for cup, watermelon has 40% more of the antioxidant than tomatoes do. Get your C: A big slice of watermelon (about 2 cups) provides almost half your

On Tuesday 23rd September the members travelled to Aquilon, to play the monthly competition. Fewer members than usual were there, due mainly to people having returned to UK for a break, or family reasons. The course at Aquilon was as ever in excellent condition, and it really is a pleasure to have good grass on both fairways and greens. The weather forecast had led us to think that we might not finish in the dry, but how wrong that was, as it turned out to be a really beautiful day. The cards were analysed and the result announced with your truly coming out on top with a score of 38 points. I put it down to a very high handicap and fewer members on the course. I hate photos of myself, so I decided to add a cartoon to the report.

There was a rumble in the 19th that 4 out of the five winners are on the committee !!!!!!!!!!!!

How did you rate the teams performance? I asked coach Jelco Oosterhof: Yes of course. These are the kind of games we need to play more often. With these types of games the level will rise, we are still missing Titino, Victor and Joseda. We have a nice team, but they do not know how good they really are.

The London to Brighton Veteran car run The Brighton Run has been reported to be the longest running car event in the world and ranks as one of Britain’s biggest motoring spectacles. It attracts entrants from around the world, all eager to take part. The event is not a race. The cars are limited to an average speed of 20 mph and the only reward for a successful run is a Bronze Medal (awarded to all who reach Brighton before 16.30). The Veteran Car Run has since 1956 always taken place on the first Sunday in November.Various routes and start times have been used in the past. Eligible cars Only cars built before 1 January 1905 are eligible to take part, with the option for the organisers to invite a small number of vehicles out of period. From the list of cars there are some without a year stated, these come in two categories - “Entries with Grandfather Rights” and “Invited Entries”. Entries with Grandfather Rights - The car has taken part on the Run on many occasions as a pre 31st December 1904 car but with new information on the car coming in resent years it has been found that the car was in fact later. Invited Entries - These entries have only taken part in one or two Runs before but have, like the above, been redated or the car is of outstanding interest. The Run attracts entrants from all over the world, with the biggest overseas entry coming from the United States, followed by France. The oldest car to partake in recent years (2000) was the steam “car” belonging to the Bristol Industrial Museum, the “1875 Grenville Steam Carriage”, it completed the run in pouring rain, in approx. 9 hours. Now on loan to The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Veteran car owners are rightly furious if these fine old vehicles are referred to as ‘old crocks’

Only 13 or 14 reached Brighton, although it was hinted that one car or possible more had been taken down to Brighton by train and covered with mud before crossing the finishing line! The 2014 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will be a glittering affair as not one but two multiple Olympic gold medallists are set to tackle the world’s oldest motoring event. Sir Steve Redgrave, CBE, winner of five consecutive Olympic golds in rowing from 1984-2000, is the latest sporting knight paying tribute to motoring’s pioneers. As dawn breaks over Hyde Park on Sunday 2 November, Redgrave’s 1904 Thornycroft will line up alongside Sir Ben Ainslie’s 1904 Panhard-Levassor for the 60-mile run to Brighton. The Thornycroft, one of just 13 marque survivors and the only example on the Run, spends most of the year on display at the Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon in Warwickshire but is a regular London to Brighton entrant.

Redgrave had his first experience behind the wheel at a special test session at Gaydon this week. “I am really looking forward to doing the Run for the first time,” admitted Redgrave. “Although I know it is not a race, the competitor in me will spur me on to the finish in Brighton commented Steve.” As well as his five Olympic golds, Redgrave won a bronze at the 1988 Summer Games making him the third most decorated British Olympian behind Sir Chris Hoy MBE and Sir Bradley Wiggins CBE both of whom have seven medals. Since retirement from competitive rowing, Redgrave has devoted much of his time to his charity, the Steve Redgrave Fund, which uses the power and inspiration of sport to bring about positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and their communities.

Property, Financial and Legal NON RESIDENT TAX IN SPAIN – THE PROS AND CONS So you buy your Spanish property – maybe you intend to use it only for holidays to begin with and decide whether to live here at a later stage in your life. Maybe you’re the other way round - you have been living here as a Fiscal Resident and after a change in your circumstances you become non resident in the tax sense. What is this non resident tax all about – why would you have to pay if not living here all the time and/or are of retirement age?? Well because Spanish tax law dictates that a non resident owner of a property in Spain must pay a property tax, based on the catastral value (which is used for the calculation of the IBI tax). This law applies even if the property is used as a holiday home in Spain and does not generate income from rentals. If the property is rented then the rent is another factor to take into account. The Non Resident Tax Return form (Modelo 210) and the tax payable, should not be confused with that IBI payment which is paid to your Town hall. This tax is somewhat analogous to the UK council tax.
