Happy Retirement to Saied of 7th Heaven Everybody has that special Bar, Restaurant or Café that they frequent where the staff know them by name and know what they will order as soon as they walk through the door. For many locals and holiday makers in Puerto de Mazarron that place was 7th Heaven. Famous for its homemade cakes, and summer BBQ terrace, 7th Heaven was home from home. For its legions of fans, it is sadly no more. After many successful years the hard working Saied has finally decided to slow down his pace of life and opt for retirement. “It has been great fun” said Saied. “I will miss the customers, I will miss the friends that I have made, but not the long hours! It’s time for me to enjoy my retirement and spending time with my family. Once again, from me and all of our staff, we want to say a huge thank you!” From everyone at the Journal, thanks to you Saied for making 7th Heaven “The meeting place in the Port”. We wish you a fantastic retirement, after all those years working so hard, you deserve it! Bon Voyage!

Best Summer in 10 Years for Tourism 2015 summer, from July to September, was the best summer in 10 years for Spain’s tourism, according to Exceltur, the association that encompasses big companies of the sector in Spain. Local media in Spain last week quoted

Exceltur executives as saying that that the sector performance between July and September was “excellent”, highlighting that the activity had risen by 3.7% during the period when compared with a year earlier. Exceltur emphasised that domestic tourism rose this summer, recovering the demand that had sharply fallen because of the economic crisis. In July and August, Spaniards’ overnight stays rose by 6.2% and consumption increased by 5%, recovering pre-crisis levels.

Spain is the 3rd most visited country in the world after the United States and France and is the 2nd country where tourists spend more money.

Spain’s La Primitiva lottery awards record prize The owner of a ticket for Spain’s Primitiva Lottery validated in Barcelona is set to receive over €100 million in prize money – the biggest ever sum handed out by the draw.

On the other hand, there were 72,762 people more affiliated to the social security system working in the tourist sector when compared with the same period in 2014 and companies said that both sales and benefits had risen.

The previous biggest payout, awarded to a winner in Seville in August 2013, was €67.1 million.

People working in the hotel industry sector rose by 58,890, those working in the accommodation sector rose by 12,203, while those working in entertainment, travel agencies and air transport increased by 9,942 workers, 1,669 and 916 respectively. Spain expects to receive a record high of 68 million international tourists this year. In this sense, Exceltur pointed out that Spain continued to benefit from the political instability suffered by countries in the north of Africa, highlighting increases of arrivals from Britain, France and Belgium. On the other hand, arrivals from Russia have significantly fallen.

The holder of the only winning ticket in Thursday’s draw will receive a total of €101,724,559 after winning in the Special Category – selecting all six numbers plus the return number – and scooping the accumulated prize in the First Category – awarded for picking the six main winning numbers. The winning combination was formed by the numbers 1, 7, 21, 27, 38 and 46. The key number was 41 and the return number was 6. The total amount collected by the draw rose to €27 million.

Tourism accounts for around 11% of Spain’s GDP and according to Ramon Estalella, from the Spanish

Important AnnouncementCamposol Security Camposol Surveillance wish to announce that they will cease to trade from the 1st of November 2015. This regrettable decision has been reached by the management due to a number of factors. Whilst the majority of clients were happy with the service, many paying a year in advance, there has been a significant number of clients who contracted the service then failed to pay. Others cancelled direct debit agreements without informing the company. This has led to the company continuing to provide the service to the clients, and then being penalised by the bank as they attempted to collect the monies owed. The security company has been in operation for over 5 years, and in that time their close liaison with the both the Polica Local and Guardia Civil, has not only prevented crime, but led to the conviction of criminals operating in the area, with one burglar being sentenced to 2 years in prison for crimes committed on Camposol. Firstly, I should point out that it is not a legal requirement to have a Spanish Will.

* Passing away without a Spanish Will (intestate) could mean that the Spanish Laws of Inheritance, governing how and to whom you can leave your property, will apply. So if you think that your other half will automatically get everything anyway, be aware, as this may not necessarily be the case in Spain.

But, if you own property in Spain, whether you live here permanently or not, you should be aware that not having a Will is an absurdity.

By opening its second-biggest store in the world in Spain, Primark, owned by Associated British Foods, signalled its confidence in its future in Spain after 10 years of quietly building up a chain of around 40 stores there. There was not much quiet about the debut, however, as the new store was mobbed by hundreds of shoppers eager to grab fashion essentials at bargain prices in a country where 22% unemployment has strained family finances. “Being on Gran Via and in such a large space is obviously a symbolic step for Primark. It’s the icing on the cake for the new king of low-cost clothing retailing in Spain,” said Carlos Hernandez, a Madridbased retail consultant. The new store is in the Gran Via 32 building on one of Madrid’s main arteries

which now has a more swanky look thanks to years of renovation work on the once-delapidated 1920s and 30s multistorey buildings that line the street. The building also houses Primark’s nearest rivals - Mango, Hennes & Mauritz and Inditex’s Lefties and, ironically, is owned by Inditex’s founder, Amancio Ortega, the world’s fourth richest man. Around 300 people queued outside the store, with dancers wearing black “I love Primark” T-shirts and carrying balloons to entertain customers. The building features a glass-domed patio lined with balconies, featuring laser screens promoting the store’s offers: dozens of styles of bags and brimmed hats, 11-euro stilettos and 28-euro camel coats. In the shop was Victor, a 25-year-old who studied design but is unemployed, wearing a black T-shirt with a Palestinian scarf wound tightly about his neck. “I’ve come for the hype really. Primark do trends very well and their logoed T-shirts are great, though the quality of their stuff isn’t great. But it’s cheap,” he said. “Primark was popular even before (Spain’s economic) crisis, because there isn’t anywhere you can find jeans for 9 euros,” he said, shouting to be heard above the in-store DJ’s set.

2015

In Spain, only just beginning to emerge from a deep recession, cheap mass-market retailers are seen as appealing to priceconscious shoppers. Cheap oil, weak inflation, tax cuts and low interest rates are all helping to put some money in consumers’ pockets, and retail sales are recovering. But the outlook remains tough for many. “This is a good moment to expand again, particularly in the low-cost segment, as salaries are and will continue to be low in the years ahead and growth will come particularly from these low and low-tomid retail segments,” said Hernandez. Demand for cheaper fashion has also put some pressure on Inditex, which owns the Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti store chains and has overhauled Lefties, its discount arm which it says sells leftover Zara stock although the clothes are branded under the Lefties name. But largely speaking, estimates Bernstein analyst Jamie Merriman, Primark’s around 6% Spanish market share has hit smaller players more than Inditex. “Spain is very interesting given that it is Inditex’s home turf, but so far there has been room for both retailers and we’re seeing continued consolidation. There is a surprising number of small retailers that are losing out,” she said.

“This opening reflects the boom in massmarket fashion, with Primark, Inditex, Mango and H&M all doing very well in Spain ... Why? Because tourism is doing very well,” said Robert Travers, a retail property partner at Cushman & Wakefield. Showing signs of a recovery, Spanish consumer confidence has shot up 17 percentage points in a year, according to state pollster CIS, with the tourist industry also doing well thanks to a weak euro and security concerns elsewhere.

Spanish Restaurant the “Best in the World” TripAdvisor just voted Martin Berasategui, a restaurant in northern Spain, the best restaurant on the planet. The eponymous restaurant is headed by Chef Martin Berasategui, who has eight Michelin stars — more than any other Spanish chef. The restaurant, in Lasarte, serves highconcept Basque fare. While dishes run the gamut from classic to zany, they all have one thing in common: They look more like artwork than something edible. They are also small — only three or four mouthfuls — and pricey. Appetizers are around EU50 each, entrees around EU80, and desserts will cost you about EU37

Spain’s public prosecutor pushes for VW investigation

Spain’s public prosecutor has asked the country’s High Court to investigate German carmaker Volkswagen and the scandal surrounding its rigging of diesel emissions tests, according to a court document seen by Reuters. The public prosecutor argued that Volkswagen might have committed fraud, including by taking subsidies illicitly, and may have committed a crime related to the environment due to pollution by its cars, the document showed. If Spain’s High Court agrees to take on the case, it would be handed to an investigating magistrate and could still take months or even years to go to trial or it could be dropped.

in the United States, and its operations elsewhere are also being scrutinized. It has said that in Spain alone, nearly 700,000 cars, mostly linked to its SEAT brand, may have included the illegal software at the heart of the scandal which erupted in mid-September. Volkswagen’s share price has suffered as a result and its long-time chief executive had to quit. Spain’s public prosecutor is requesting that Spain’s Industry Ministry, which has been in close contact with Volkswagen over the case, hand over all the information it has gathered so far. It also wants Volkswagen to provide more details on its Spanish operations and on the software it used. Spain’s government had said it would try to claw back car purchase subsidies handed out to Volkswagen, though it has since been more cautious, noting that the incentives to buy greener vehicles were not linked to the exact types of emissions under scrutiny and may not be recoverable. The Industry Ministry has stressed, however, than a EU4.2 bln investment in Spain by Volkswagen would be guaranteed, at a time when the carmaker is contemplating massive cost savings.

PREPARING YOUR CAR FOR WINTER Winter weather in Spain can vary from year to year and snowfall on the south coast is unlikely. However, if your car is parked outside during the worst of the winter months, or you’re planning to visit the interior or venture north, there are some simple steps you can take to prepare your car for winter. PROTECTING AGAINST ICE AND FROST Lights, heaters and wipers put high demands on the car battery and they have to work harder in colder weather. If your battery is over 5 years old it may be time to shop around for a

replacement. Top up your windscreen wash with a more concentrated mix of antifreeze. Give locks and mechanisms a spray with WD40. Cleaning and waxing your car will give the bodywork a coat of protection against temperature extremes.

stopping distances, reduce aquaplaning and improve handling. If you haven’t changed to winter treads, road safety experts recommend 3mm of tyre depth as a minimum for winter driving.

BEING PREPARED

Breakdowns are more common in winter. The number of breakdowns can increase dramatically during extreme conditions. For safe trouble-free driving we recommend gentle manoeuvres, as stopping distances are ten times longer in snow and ice. To avoid wheel spin, pull away in second gear, easing your foot gently off the clutch. Maintain a constant speed where possible, if you need to break, then apply them gently and progressively. Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. If you get stuck, straighten the steering and clear any excess build up of snow from the wheels. You can get additional grip by putting a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels. Once your car is moving, maintain a constant speed, avoiding rapid acceleration or deceleration and try not to stop until you reach firmer ground.

Make sure you have a phone charger in the car should you need to call for assistance. In the event you get stranded, there are some items that will make a difference; carry some blankets, a folding shovel, jump leads, tow-bar and tow rope. If colder weather is forecast, make sure you have a full tank of fuel, as you may need to keep the engine running to stay warm until help arrives. Check your insurance policy covers you for emergency breakdown and recovery. Línea Directa provides for Road Assistance in their car insurance policies. This ensures that you receive immediate assistance by phone 24 hours a day. Our breakdown service will endeavour to get your car back on the road as soon as possible or tow your vehicle to your local repairer of choice in Spain.

Camposol British Builder Mazarron Country Club Garden Project I was recommended by a former client to design and build a low maintenance relaxing garden area at Mazarron Country Club so I arranged to go and meet the prospective clients with my drawing pad in hand … I design and plan all my garden and landscaping projects myself, I have designed and planned over 150 landscaping projects in the UK over the years before moving to Spain. My work has ranged from converting fields into beautiful English traditional gardens to small modern be-spoke outdoor areas . When I met up with Martin and Barbara they told me they had limited ideas but wanted a garden to relax and unwind in. I always like to sit down with clients for a good couple of hours to find out about their lifestyle and likes and dislikes and I always try to incorporate some of a client’s ideas. I think it’s important to fully understand your client when taking on a new project , we discussed Martin and Barbara’s garden plan and I did some sketches, I always sketch up the client’s wish list first on paper as having a visual of their dream garden helps you make simple but effective changes in order to produce a stunning outdoor space. With their plan in hand we walked around the garden together and the started to discuss what they wanted and if it really worked or not. Employing someone that can understand outdoor space is important and the ability to change things to optimize the best from a garden /patio space is something I have done time after time, I am a firm believer in being a straight talker with clients and if I think it’s not a good idea I will say so . Myself, Barbara and Martin then sat down again with my sketch pad and I then incorporated my ideas into their garden design, after an hour or so we finally agreed on a design and plan. I then went away to prepare a full written quotation. A couple of days later I was back on site and I sat down and fully explained all the costs and time scales to them, they were happy with everything. All my work is detailed in a signed contract of works agreement….. I will not work without this. The work commenced a few weeks later, all the ground work was done clearing the massive 200 sqm plot and the we started to set and plan out the patio areas , paths , planting and irrigation systems the whole area took us just under 3 weeks from start to finish. Martin and Barbara were kept informed of progress every

step of the way and I would like to thank them for their business . I am a fully qualified builder and I am a former member of Trustmark and The Federation of Master Builders in the UK. I have all my qualifications available for client’s to see and these include qualifications for bricklaying , plastering , tiling , plumbing , tree surgery, landscaping and design work. I also obtain much of my business here in Spain through recommendations from former Spanish and English clients. I specialize in extensions, underbuild conversions, bathrooms , kitchens , tiling plumbing , plastering and rendering as well as landscaping and gardening. I have set up a Facebook page ..Camposol British Builder which also shows examples of my work. The Journal has asked if I can do another editorial for next month’s Journal covering building projects together with recent kitchen and bathroom fits so please look out for this in November’s issue. If you have any questions or if you would like any advice on a project that you are planning please contact us via our Facebook page: www.facebook. com/camposolbritishbuilder or call us on 685 225 025.

Free-Sol – Safe Grip Anti-Slip Product Have you ever lost your footing or slipped on tile floors? Are you worried that guests may slip in the shower, bath or round the pool? Are you the owner or responsible for a business in Spain? Free-Sol has an anti slip treatment that reduces the risk of slips and falls on many different types of floor surfaces, which become dangerous to walk on when wet or damp. The flooring we have in Spain, whether ceramic tiles, slate, terrazzo, quarry tiles, marble, stone, concrete or even enamel baths and shower trays can be particularly unforgiving if you are unfortunate enough to fall. Furthermore these surfaces can become lethal when wet or moist. Fortunately you don’t have to replace your floors to make them safer. FreeSol has a transparent anti slip solution, which can be applied to floor surfaces thereby radically improving their slip resistance when wet.

For the record, 95% of major slips result in broken bones and they can also be the initial causes for a range of other accidents. The application of our anti slip product is quick and easy – we even have DIY kits available if you’d like to carry out the application yourself. Once the treatment is complete all you have to do is keep the surface clean using good housekeeping procedures, normal cleaning agents will not affect the performance of the product. If you own or are responsible for a business in Spain you are legally obligated to protect the safety of your customers and staff. If an accident should occur and you have not taken reasonable steps to make your business safe you can be prosecuted. Why not give us a call NOW to find out how to make your home or business a safer place and to receive a free no obligation quote and demonstration. To find out more, please phone Martin Freeman on 659 232 507 or alternatively send Martin an e-mail. His e-mail address is martin. freeman@free-sol.com

The English Funeral Director Invites You To Attend A Special Christmas Remembrance Service

Tony Smith, The English Funeral Director, is holding his ninth Christmas Remembrance service in order to help people remember loved ones at this special season. Although Christmas is a time for celebration, it can also be a time for remembering those who are no longer with us. Everyone is busy with Christmas shopping and wishing each other a Merry Christmas, but for some there will be an empty place at the table and a name missing from the Christmas cards. It may be for a loved one who has recently passed away or even for someone who died many years ago.The memorial tree service enables people to take part in a tangible act of remembrance at what can be a very difficult time for many people. You are invited to write a message or prayer for your loved one on a star which will be provided on the evening. This may be a person who has passed away recently or many years ago. There will be an opportunity to place the star upon our Christmas memory tree which will be dedicated during the service. The remembrance service aims to be uplifting whilst reflecting on the lives of those who have passed away. There will be a selection of poems, prayers, Christmas carols and a time for reflection. Stars will be available on the evening or if you are unable to attend please contact Tony Smith on 650 631 719 prior to the evening and we can hang a star on your behalf. The service will start at 6pm, you are invited to come from 5.30pm if you wish to write your message before the service starts. After the event there will be mince pies and a glass of sherry for everyone, so come and join us. Mazarrón New Tanatorio Monday 7th December 2015 at 6pm

Thinking of buying property in Spain? Now could be the best time! by Peter Loveday, Director Southern Europe, Currencies Direct

A

growing number of Brits are buying properties in Spain, and it’s easy to see why. The rewards of buying a property abroad can be huge – warm weather, cheaper living costs thanks to the strength of the pound against the euro (meaning salaries and pensions go a lot further), and the prospect of a better quality of life. Buying your new home is a big, exciting step, and one of the largest purchases you’ll ever make. You want to make sure you know exactly where your money is going, and that you’re getting the most out of it every step of the way. Did you know that you can get up to 5% more from your international payments by using Currencies Direct instead of your bank?*

Get more for your money Moving abroad can be tough and throw up all kinds of challenges, from arranging a mortgage to setting up bank accounts and regular overseas transfers. It can be easy to get a bad deal or lose a lot of money without realising – until it’s too late. Beware of the high street banks that hit you with fees and hidden charges, as well as poor exchange rates, making your international property payments a needlessly expensive hassle.

Make the most of your overseas money transfers by using an experienced currency transfer specialist like us. Currencies Direct have been around since 1996 – and because we’ve been helping people transfer funds quickly and cost-effectively for more than 19 years, we know a thing or two about the currency markets.

Peace of mind When looking for an exchange provider, you want to get the best rates and great service. You want someone to talk to you, to understand what’s important to you and what you want to achieve. But most importantly, you want to make sure your funds are in safe hands. After all, it’s your money we’re talking about. Currencies Direct have been around since 1996, so we have credibility and longevity. Both of these are fundamental when choosing the right currency exchange provider. We’re established, with Dun & Bradstreet’s highest credit score, and we’re authorised by the FCA for the provision of payment services.

Living the simple life Currency specialists love talking about foreign currency, but they should know that most people don’t. It’s likely that you just want to move your

money and get on with life. We offer straightforward guidance to help you get what you want. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are available on the phone whenever you need them. With a presence in Spain since 1999, we currently have eight offices across the country and are always looking to expand. We have great experience and knowledge of the local market. We don’t baffle you with jargon or hit you with hidden costs, and any money you transfer will be sent quickly. Living the simple life means you can enjoy the yacht, holiday home or whatever else your money buys you. Let the experts sort out the foreign currency needed to make it happen. Let’s talk currency.

Learn about your options Every type of overseas transfer has a service tailored to help you. “Learn to discern” which products will work best for you and make your life easier – as well as make your money go further. •

Use spot contracts for paying bills in another country, moving money quickly across your accounts for propertyrelated payments or sending money to a friend or family member. Use forward contracts for buying property abroad, big international purchases or transferring your life savings.

Use regular transfers for paying your mortgage, making pension transfers overseas or sending international students’ monthly allowances.

Use limit orders for maximum benefit when exchange rates move in your favour, or for transfers that are not time-sensitive.

Use Rate Watch for keeping an eye on the currency markets, leaving your options open when your target rate is reached or transfers that are not time-sensitive.

ESAMD The Poppy Appeal is well under way and you can find poppies and collection boxes in bars, restaurants & shops in the Mazarrón district until 12th November 2015. The British Legion created the Poppy Appeal to help those returning from the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, we’re still helping today’s Armed Forces families and veterans in much the same way. The poppy is a powerful symbol - it is worn to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today and their loved ones. The Legion’s vital welfare work is entirely dependent on the public’s support – so please give generously and wear your poppy with pride, knowing that with your donation you can help the entire Armed Forces community to Live On. Technology Misfit Shine 2 With Improved Sleep and Activity Tracking Launched

Misfit, after launching its Shine activity tracker in India last month, has launched the Misfit Shine 2 with improved functions and new features. Available in Rose Gold and Carbon Black, the wearable can be purchased from the company website and would

hit other retail outlets worldwide by next month for around 100₏. As per the company, the Shine 2 tracks the wearer’s sleep and

fitness activity more accurately than its previous version. It uses a 3-axis accelerometer and the new 3-axis magnetometer for tracking. “Now you can see easily see progress and tell time in a halo of rainbow-coloured lights, which provide a platform for nuanced feedback, adds the company blog post. As seen in Apple Watch, the Shine 2 now includes Misfit Nudge, which would

remind users to be active with a vibrational nudge after regular intervals. In addition, the Shine 2 now supports alerts for texts and calls, something that was missing in its predecessor. Misfit claims the Shine 2 to sport improved touch responsiveness, faster syncing, and extended Bluetooth range (v4.1) along with a ‘12 lights display’ including over 16 million colours, which is also visible under direct sunlight. As usual, the Shine 2 is compatible with Misfit Link app for Android and iOS. The app “lets you communicate with friends, turn your lights on, change your music, take a selfie, and more, all with a triple tap. The tracker shares the same iconic design but with a thinner T6061 T6 aircraft-grade aluminium body. Despite being thinner at 8mm than the original Shine fitness tracker, the Shine 2 retains its six-month battery life, 50-metre water resistance, and modular design, as per the firm. It is backed by a user replaceable coin cell battery that lasts up to six months. “We’ve packed a lot into Shine 2, adding more functionality into an even smaller form factor with the same battery life, “said Adam Mack, Misfit’s Director of Mechanical Design during the launch. “We didn’t compromise on craftsmanship or the user experience.

Microsoft to launch its own payment service Have a Windows device? Get ready to pay. Microsoft is gearing up to launch its own mobile payment option for Windows phones and tablets. Though Microsoft has had the framework of a mobile wallet built into its operating system since Windows Phone 8, it’s never gone completely in on the concept because of the complexity required to build it. Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore said that this is going to change. “We have a bunch of work we are doing there,” he explained. To prepare for the process of building out a Microsoft mobile payments system, the computing giant has scooped up talent with experience in the field, including Amazon payments product leader Iain Kennedy. Microsoft has also started to secure the necessary licenses needed to provide money transfer services. Microsoft also intends to roll other services into its planned payment product. Tools like Windows Hello — the company’s authentication tool that can unlock devices with a fingerprint, iris, or facial recognition — will be used as a security measure, for example. This might be another case of too little, too late for Microsoft, though. Google, Apple, and Samsung have all beat the company to the punch, providing their own mobile wallet options that are already accepted at millions of retailers. The wallet for Windows devices will primarily serve people already in the Windows mobile ecosystem, which occupies a considerably smaller portion of the market than Android and iOS. Microsoft will get its existing customers the feature, sure, but it’s not likely to steal any away from those who already are paying by tapping their phones or smartwatches at checkout. Still, if you’re a Windows loyalist who has been waiting for this feature to arrive, well, it’s coming. There’s no hard date set, and Belfiore simply said it will arrive “soon.”

Apple Car Closer Than You Think? Rumours of a possible Apple car keep popping up, and Apple CEO Tim Cook might have just hinted at it rather than dispelling the rumours. Speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJD Live event, Tim Cook spoke about the future of the car industry as a whole, saying, “When I look at the automobile, what I see is that software becomes an increasingly important part of the car of the future.”

explained that Apple in the short term will be looking to give its users an “iPhone experience in the car” with its CarPlay system - but an evolution is at hand. “I do think that industry is at an inflection point for massive change, not just evolutionary change,” Cook said.

“You see that autonomous driving becomes much more important.” And of the future, Cook said, “It will seem like there will be massive change in that industry.” While Cook didn’t outright confirm that the company is working on an Apple car, he did very - very - subtly hint at a future possibility, saying, “We’ll see what we do in the future.” Cook

to reach your booked destination when you have missed your departure, repatriation to your country of residence and much more. All depends on the level of cover, duration of the trip, area of cover and the insurance company. A few things to bear in mind when deciding what insurance to choose are whether you are travelling inside or outside the European Union and especially if you are travelling to the US, as medical expenses could result in you paying a very high hospital bill. If you are travelling with a friend and something happens to your travelling partner you might need to cancel your trip. You might have some relative that might be unwell and force you to cancel your trip. For all these reasons, you might want to stop for a moment to consider the very real financial risks of travelling without cover in place and you will know that it is extremely important to invest in good quality travel insurance. How Much does it Cost For a Ton of Logs? There is no question that the winter months are upon us! When out walking in the evening’s one can smell the unmistakable smell of wood smoke coming from houses all around. It seems that most people are aware of the advantages of using a log burner in the winter months, but how many of us are aware about the cost versus quality aspect when purchasing firewood? We recently asked Manolo the owner of El Pareton Firewood what we should consider when ordering firewood. And he had this to say: “The most common question that we get asked when the phone rings is “How much is a ton of logs?” It’s a crazy question really. A bit like phoning a used car garage and asking how much a car is! We supply all different types and sizes of firewood, each type having its own unique qualities. Therefore the price can vary depending on the customer’s needs.” He said. “All our firewood is correctly stored throughout the winter to ensure that it loses around 20% of its humidity, making it ideal for burning. We are one of the only businesses

page 34

We sell only the highest quality seasoned Firewood!

in the area that has a custom facility dedicated to this, therefore we know that when we sell a ton of logs to a customer, not only will they get wood that will burn properly, they also get an actual ton. Some companies sell green wood from recently cut down trees, it has he extra humidity therefore is heavier and does not burn correctly. Firewood from El Pareton is sourced from a variety of locations in Murcia and in neighbouring provinces. When fruit trees have reached the end of their useful life for fruit production they are removed and new trees planted. The wood is then purchased directly by Manolo and put into storage. “We use all types of wood, but mainly Orange, Lemon, Almond, Olive and Pine. Each one burns differently. Our olive wood comes from Andalucia, and we only sell branches of olive, not the olive root. Burning the roots can be difficult and messy as they are nearly always covered in soil. Pine wood is a lovely wood to watch burn as the dried sap sparks and produces a beautiful effect, but it is better to use it in a glass front log burner rather than open fire. Our Almond wood is very dense and is a hard, long burning wood, but needs

www.thejournalspain.es

We Speak English

to be mixed with other wood to burn well.” Manolo tells us that when each person calls to place an order, they are asked about the size, type and location of the log burner as this enables him to recommend the correct type of wood. “Normally we recommend a mix of the different types of wood to ensure that our customers get the best value. It’s not a simple question of “how much is a ton of logs!” No one else holds a larger stock of log in this area than us. We provide a professional service.” So it seems when it comes to stocking up on firewood this winter, there is much more to consider than simply how much a ton of logs costs. It seems that even when sending your money up in smoke, like most things in life, you only get what you pay for! Jack Nicholson. I, unfortunately, understand all too well. It was a family thing. A way of life. It all began with my grandmother, ex garage proprietor (I was serving petrol as a kid when the pumps still had wheel dials to turn to set the gallons required) bought a powder blue Beetle, probably to match her hair rinse. Then my parents bought one, I think it was pale green. Then another Beetle was delivered into the family, white. Closely followed by a similar shade of Fastback. A few years passed, then the camper vans arrived. First the left hand drive split screen transporter, with gold and red metal flake paint, a flame along the side, port hole windows, burgundy shag-pile carpet, burgundy leather sofa and cocktail cabinet, General Grabber tyres and huge wheels. It even had tassels on the curtains. I could have been a roving fortune teller in that one. It was a real show pony, transporting myself and a motorcycle stunt team I used to run, up and down the country;the van drew as much attention as the riders. Sadly last seen on the forecourt of a petrol station, converted to right hand drive, burnt out, and painted a hideous shade of matt black. There followed a raised roof camper, then a blue Baja Buggy (the police constantly stopped me in that one, checking legalities) with its engine hanging out the back, and finally, my little bronze VW Sirocco, which unfortunately met an sticky end with me in the passenger seat. That was the end of the owner days. Since then, it’s been observe from afar, except for one occasion when a fellow diver let us change in comfort, instead of peeling off wetsuits in a public car park, and make the all important warm up pot of tea on his stove. V-dubs are made for the beach. Surfboards, not software.

Los Palacios

October has seen lots of activity in all three of the Los Palacios park areas, the Memorial garden team have worked really hard in preparation for the next big event in our Calendar the traditional Remembrance Day Service on 11th November. The rose garden has been pruned, most of the park has been cleared of weeds, but the main work has been the relaying of the white stone at the memorial end of the park. Although last year the weather was dreadful, nearly 400 people attended and it would be fantastic to see so many people attend again this year. Please come along and take part in this special community event. Why not take the opportunity of ordering a plaque to remember a loved one whilst attending the remembrance service. The first plaques have now been fitted to the Circle of Remembrance in the Memorial Garden and people say how lovely it is to have such a beautiful peaceful place to go and reflect and remember loved ones. Anyone interested in having a plaque fitted should contact Glyn Webb via our Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.

As with People’s Park, this area will probably take around two years to complete. Once again we would like to thank everyone who has supported us financially, every euro donated is used for improvements and the upkeep of existing areas. All members of the group give there time freely and nobody receives any payments of any kind We would love new people to come along and join us to help improve Los Palacios and be part of our fantastic team.

In People’s Park we have laid over 50 tonnes of gravel covering about 400 square metres down one side of the park and planted 80 oleander bushes to give the whole park a real lift. The team have worked really hard clearing a massive amount of weeds and overgrown plants in preparation for this project starting. We have big plans for this area, but the project will probably take the best part of two years to complete. On Central Park two more areas have been completed, a previously planted area at the northern end of the park has now been gravelled with an additional five Jacaranda trees planted. At the bottom end, directly opposite the doctors, we have raised the ground level to give the edge of the park a nice

Our Autumn Party at the Golf Club was a great success; everyone enjoyed a lovely evening with the very talented Brendan O’Dee. The proceeds will finance current and future work projects. Special thanks must go to Liz’s Cafe and Costa Café for their donations of ‘meal deal’ vouchers, and to all who supported us and donated the lovely raffle prizes. However, during that evening, a newly planted tree was snapped in half and yet another 1000 Litres of water were drained from our containers, making a total of 7000 litres lost – steps are being taken to secure these after the padlocks were vandalized but please be vigilant so we may finally catch the idiots who are regularly doing this? It seemed like a ‘forgotten’ and very dirty area. No-one likes living or spending their holidays in such a place so if you don’t already belong to our scheme, please consider joining? It only costs a small donation of 5 Euros per house each month to have the whole of ‘C’ Sector North swept, cleaned and sprayed. Health &Wellbeing Uncle Paul’s problem page

Dear Uncle Paul, I am a 61 year old man and my lady friend broke up with me after we dated for 6 months. It took me completely by surprise. I loved her, and was going to ask her to marry me in a few more months. After she broke up with me, she told me that she has feelings for my best friend. Now, my best friend is not telling me when my ex and he do things together. I feel hurt, betrayed, and very bitter. I don’t know how I can deal with the two people I cared about most now. I feel that while he might not be dishonourable about my girlfriend, he is there for her, and not for me, and he is creating an opportunity for her to like him, and not me. Am I screwed up or what? Thanks for your help, Mr Betrayed. Dear Mr Betrayed, As they say the early bird catches the worm! Slow coach…. Waiting a few more months didn’t help you here did it? 6 Months? I have had rashes that lasted longer than that. Look my guess is this was not a spur of the moment decision for her to end your relationship. And had probably been on the horizon for a while. She liked you at the start but went off you and fancied a bit of your friend instead.

Jane's Salon Home of Health, Hair & Beauty

Bolnuevo

You are not screwed up.You are angry and hurt because you feel that this flussy and your best friend betrayed you.You may also feel a loss of trust. The two people you cared about most have found each other and abandoned you. It happens in books and films and in real life as well. You did not do anything wrong. If anything, they messed up by ruining their friendships with you — or perhaps they just found each other, and the loss of your friendship is part of the fall out of that. Right now, it is important to take care of yourself. Allow yourself to feel your hurt and anger. Only then can you begin to move on with your life. Moving on may mean making changes with your dealings with them as a way of helping you to heal and regain your sense of well-being.You may want to talk things through with them to let them know how hurt you are. This might bring you some closure. Or, you may want to just cut your losses and dump the friendship with them both. For some people, this is a truly radical idea: There is no need to fight with your partner. Ever. Accusations, recriminations, character assassination, threats, name-calling, and cursing, whether delivered at top volume or with a quiet sarcastic sneer, damage a relationship, often irrevocably. Nobody needs to be a monster or to be treated monstrously. Nobody who yells will ever be heard. In the heat of a moment, it is always a choice whether to go for a run or run your partner down. On the other hand, no two people in the world, no matter how made for each other they feel, will ever agree about everything at all times. (It would be quite boring if they did.) Couples do need to be able to negotiate differences. They do need to have room for constructive criticism. They do need a way to assert opinions and to disagree.

And they do need to have a way to express intense feelings (that the other person may not understand or support) without feeling that they will be judged as lacking for doing so. A healthy relationship requires knowing the skills necessary for “friendly fighting” — dealing with conflict respectfully and working together to find a workable solution. Friendly fighting means working out differences that matter. It means engaging passionately about things we feel passionate about, without resorting to hurting one another. It helps us let off steam without getting burned. Friendly fighting lets us “fight” and still stay friends.

What is Yoga? Yoga practice calms the nervous system Do you ever wonder why people who practice yoga seem so calm and happy? Many people suffer from hypertension, which is spending too much time in the sympathetic nervous system due to stress. Hypertension is a state of great psychological stress due to the pressures of modern life. Regular yoga practice: asana (yoga posture), pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation and deep relaxation allow you to spend more time in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is a state of rejuvenation and rest. In our modern lives we face constant stress that causes our fight or flight responses to be stimulated - even though we are very rarely, if ever, in a life or death situation like we were in the cave man days. Nowadays we step

Health &Wellbeing into fight or flight when our boss sends us an e-mail that makes us angry or we feel the everyday pressures of life: deadlines, family, money, and mental stress. The parasympathetic system is responsible for activities that occur when the body is resting; it is a state of relaxation and rejuvenation. We want to spend more time in the parasympathetic nervous system. Yoga strengthens the parasympathetic nervous system, which counteracts the “fight or flight” response that is triggered when we’re under stress. Spending more time in the parasympathetic nervous system allows our mind and body to rejuvenate so we can let go and trust the universal flow. It is like the story of the river, when we hold on so tight to a branch- something we feel we have to have, the river beats us up. When we let go and step into a space of trust and relaxation the river will take us where we are really meant to be. Many of us know that the law of attraction states that our thoughts create our reality.Yet, what can be even more important than our thoughts are our emotions. Thoughts are electric and emotions are magnetic. That means our emotions are really creating our reality. The more time we spend in the sympathetic nervous system (in a stress response) the more we produce cortisol and attract or magnetize stressful experiences into our lives. We are addicted to the chemical that is released during our stress responses, Cortisol. Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol, creates hypertensionwhich can increase weight, and have negative effects on the heart and kidneys including many other issues. We practice yoga and meditation to get ourselves into the parasympathetic a space of relaxation and trust. It is like the story of the river - if you go with the FLOW you will be brought where you are meant to be. If you hold onto a branch, you will be beaten up by the current. Deeply relaxing on a cellular level allows the body to heal itself;

when you begin to calm the mind, the healing takes place. In this process your body and mind re-calibrate, preparing you to receive more. Create time just for you to practice yoga or deep relaxation.Yoga is the effort that you put in to be effortless in life, so you can be the calm in the storm.

in this space of deep healing for your body, mind and spirit. Take your time and stay present, and whenever you are ready, gently make your way out of this meditation, feeling refreshed and renewed.

Here is a simple guided relaxation for entering the parasympathetic nervous system: Lay down on the floor or on your bed. Get really comfortable and begin long deep breathing through the nose. Expand the navel as you inhale and allow it to glide back as you exhale. Feel the support of the bed or floor underneath you. Imagine you are sinking into deep relaxation as you continue to breathe. Allow your body this deep healing, as you fully let go. Staying present, begin to soften into the breath. Imagine you are butter melting on a hot skillet, every cell sinking deeper and deeper into complete comfort.

In the 19th while cards were checked, George Bricknal with a score of 36 points was quietly hoping he had won, until Phil Clayton turned in a score of 37. Not to be outdone the society captain Gerry Taylor, handed in his card, which when scrutinised gave him a winning score of 38. George was not to be outdone however, and won the prize for nearest the pin, and the football raffle. The other nearest the pin winner was Tim Skinner, a guest. The handicap secretary will no doubt wipe the smile from their faces when he gets out his pencil and cuts them down.

Straight Down the Middle Golf Society Close finishes. On Wednesday the 23rd September the society members all gathered at Lorca Resort Golf Club This course is in excellent condition and has to be one of the best in this area, with friendly staff as well. It does represent quite a challenge for some members who struggle to get over one or two of the ramblas, especially from the tee. The weather on the day was perfect for golf, with pleasant sunshine, temperatures in the middle 20’s, and little or no breeze. The conditions were certainly helpful, as some of the best scores of the season were returned, although one member who suggested he had a hole in one, had to be reminded that it was in fact three off the tee!! Following a previous tee shot.

Gerry Taylor

He also had to reduce his own handicap, so did not find too much to smile about. The November gathering of the society will be at Aguilon on the 26th, with a 10 o’clock tee time There is to be a dinner dance for the medal presentations on the 6th February 2016, and all who are interested should let Joe Chalk know asap. Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C

LOS AMIGOS DE MAZARRON FC LATEST NEWS After a poor start to the season with just one draw from the first four games, Mazarron bounced back with consecutive victories, 1-0 away to SC Aguileno and 4-0 at home to AD Alquerias to move off the bottom of the table up into 12th position.

Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The ex-pat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Forthcoming league fixtures are:Sunday 1st November S.F.C. Minerva (Away) Sunday 8th November C.F. MOLINA (HOME) Sunday 15th November C.D. Cieza (Away) Sunday 22nd November MONTECASILLAS F.C. (HOME) Sunday 29th November C.D. Bala Azul (Away) Sunday 6th December U.D. LOS GARRES (HOME) More than 40 members enjoyed the October Luncheon Club outing to the Restaurante El Puerto 1 on Tuesday 27th October. Details and availability for the November lunch can be obtained by emailing pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk but please do so as soon as possible as these outings are soon fully booked, The President’s Bash at the Club House Camposol on 6th October was again a great success. Members and friends enjoyed a splendid barbeque buffet before being entertained by the musical talents of the excellent Geckos.

The victories coincided with the arrival of new signing Hafid who provided much needed support up front for striker Jose who scored 3 goals in the first six games. The new squad seemed to be gelling together after the uncertain start with the defence looking sound and the team was trying to play attractive football under new coach Victor.

One very sad note was the death of longstanding Los Amigos member Barry Bridge after a short illness. Barry was one of the founder members of Los Amigos and had supported Los Amigos de Mazarron FC and Mazarron Football Club through thick and thin over the years. He was a lovely man and a true gentleman and will be sadly missed.

The Juvenile and Cadete teams both made good starts to the season, the Juveniles winning four of their first five games and were in second and fourth position in their respective leagues in mid October. The youth set up at Mazarron is among the best in the area and is overseen by last year’s first team coach Javi in his new role as Director of Football.

The 7th Annual Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Gala Evening and Dinner in support of Mazarron Football Club will be held at the Hotel la Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarron on Wednesday 16th March. On Saturday 10th October the Salud Golf Society raised 450 euros for F.A.S.T. as a result of a raffle. The prize of a Flat Screen LCD T.V. was donated by the team’s Captain, Andy Money. The

amount raised was amazing with great thanks going out to Adam Main & his staff at the “Bar salud” for promoting the event and collecting the funds. On top of that it was decided that the Golf Society increased the funds by a further 50 euros to round up the figure to 500 euros. We know that this money is going towards a very worthy cause as F.A.S.T. have and continue to give such a fantastic service on Camposol. The presentation of the collection took place on Saturday 17th October.

Toyota overtakes VW to regain lead in vehicle sales Toyota has returned to the top slot in global vehicle sales after releasing figures for the first nine months of the year. The Japanese carmaker sold 7.5 million in the first three quarters of 2015, beating Volkswagen’s 7.43 million and General Motors’ 7.2 million. After six months of the year, VW was ahead of Toyota, in pole position for the first time. VW’s emissions scandal emerged towards the end of September. The discovery of software that was able to mislead emissions tests on diesel cars may have more effect on VW’s sales in the remainder of the year. Toyota’s sales for the first nine months were 1.5% below the level at the same stage last year. Toyota first overtook GM to take the top slot in 2008 and has kept it every year since, except 2011 when GM was the top seller after a tsunami in north-eastern Japan disrupted Toyota’s production.

VW to investigate another engine type for ‘cheat device’ Volkswagen says it is looking into more of its diesel engines to see whether they also contain software used to manipulate emissions test data. Should the engines have a socalled “defeat device”, this could widen the number of vehicles affected. VW has been embroiled in a scandal over emissions test rigging on its EA 189 engines. It is now looking into older versions of EA 288 engines, although versions sold in Europe are not affected. In September, Volkswagen said that 11 million diesel vehicles were affected by the scandal, first disclosed by the US regulator, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA discovered that certain engines were fitted with a cheatdevice that could detect when the car was being tested and reduced emissions to improve results. VW had previously said that the

page 46

software was installed on cars with variants of the EA 189 diesel engine built to the “Euro 5” emissions standard. The company is now checking whether models with the EA 288 diesel motor built to the same emissions standard may also have the software. Newer EA 288 cars built to the “Euro 6” standard are said not to be affected. Criminal investigations have been launched in Germany and in France and Italy, and VW has faced questions by MPs in the UK. The firm has set aside €6.5bn to cover the costs of the scandal but many analysts expect this will not be enough.

Vauxhall issues alert over Zafira fires

Carmaker Vauxhall is trying to contact hundreds of thousands of British drivers, over worries their Zafira models could catch fire. More than 130 owners have reported overheating problems behind the glove-box area, some of which have resulted in fires. Vauxhall is investigating the problem, but has not yet issued a full recall. The affected model is the Zafira B. It is thought that 280,000 of them are currently on the road in the UK. The alarm was raised by three different women,

who say their cars burst into flames. Among them was Sue Freemantle, from Devon, who had four children in her Zafira when a fire began behind the dashboard. Claire Wheatley also from Devon, had to evacuate her car along with her husband when a similar incident occurred. They and others have posted pictures of the fires on Facebook. Air conditioning Vauxhall has already examined 20 such cars which have been burned out, and has summoned engineers from Germany to investigate. In a statement, it said it thought the heating and ventilation system was to blame. It said previous repairs may have been carried out improperly, or in some cases, non-genuine parts may have caused the fires. The affected models have manual air-conditioning, as pictured above. Owners who have electronic climate control have not reported any problems. The cars, all righthand drive, were built between 2005 and 2014. Anyone who has concerns about their vehicle is being asked to contact their dealer.

before escaping over a ramp. Before long, the only undamaged police car left in the vicinity takes chase, and Bond takes a wrong turn down a dead end alley. He tells Tiffany Case to lean over and uses a loading ramp to put the car on two wheels and escape through the narrow pedestrian walkway to safety. Interestingly, the Vegas strip was so busy that for most of the chase scene, large crowds of tourists could be seen on

the sidewalks, watching the action. The producers hoped that the chase would be so exciting that the audience wouldn’t notice. Another point of interest is that virtually all the cars destroyed during filming were Fords. That’s because Ford offered to supply as many cars as the producers wanted, if Bond drove a Mustang.

Bond Movie: Diamonds Are Forever (1971) Synopsis:

While Diamonds Are Forever wasn’t the most well received Sean Connery Bond film, it did have one of the best car chases of the early series. While at the wheel of Tiffany Case’s Ford Mustang, Bond finds himself on the Sheriff’s radar, resulting in a high tension chase along the Las Vegas strip. There are some excellently choreographed manoeuvres, but the action soon moves to a parking lot, where Bond tricks half a dozen police cars into crashing into each other,

Property, Financial and Legal BRUSSELS AND “ALL THAT JAZZ” No Im not talking about vegetables – I am referring to the legislation with regard to what you can and cant do with your assets. For most of us here in Spain, we have to think about assets in the UK as well as assets in Spain. Its imperative that some planning is used to be sure that your wishes on death are carried out exactly as you would wish and intend, and this is the reason why it is so important to make a Will in each country where you have assets eg a Spanish Will regarding your Spanish assets and a UK Will regarding your UK assets. For us expats from the UK we have always had the benefit of what is known as “Testamentary Freedom” which means we can leave our assets in the UK to whomsoever we wish. However, a disinherited person or anyone else who considers they have a valid reason to claim an interest in the Estate could make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, which has subsequently been amended by the Inheritance & Trustee Powers Act 2014. Basically what that means is that although any child has a right to inherit

lawyer and your financial adviser to work together to ensure that all the correct legal and financial steps are taken to ensure your wishes are carried out. Its important to know that you are discussing your situation with someone who can advise you about the consequences of inheritance tax and the inheritance procedure in each country. One major difference in Spain is that inheritance tax is paid by the inheritors of the Estate, as opposed to in the UK the inheritance tax is payable from the Estate itself. The only sure route to ensure that your assets in either country go to whom you wish is to make a Will in each country ie in Spain regarding your Spanish assets and a UK Will regarding your UK assets – and its important that they do not contradict each other. Recovery in property sales in Spain is proving sustainable Homes sales in Spain are showing strong growth, up by 13.9% in the second quarter of this year following a rise of 4.4% in the first quarter, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Public Works. It is the six quarter in a row when sales have increased year on year, suggesting that the recovery in the Spanish real estate market is being sustained. It is also the second best quarter since 2010. However, the market still has some way to go to its pre-crisis level as sales are 58% lower than the peak of 2006. A breakdown of the figures shows that some 12.5% of sales were for new homes and sales increased in 14 regions, as well as in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and fell in three. The biggest increases were in La Rioja with growth of 44.2%, Ceuta and Melilla at 33.9%, the Balearic Islands at 30.1%, Cantabria at 29.4% and Murcia at 25.7%. Sales fell by 14.7% in Navarra, by 1.5% in Extremadura and by 0.6% in the Basque Country.

Overseas buyers living in Spain accounted for 17.2% of sales while sales to non-resident foreigners amounted to 5%. Alicante had the highest number of foreign buyers at 4,141, MĂĄlaga 2,517, Barcelona 1,470, Madrid 1,173 and Tenerife 1,099. The sustained recovery is also confirmed in the latest figures from the General Council of Notaires, showing that the property market grew by 11% in July compared to the same month in 2014. The data shows that the Spanish property market has expanded in nine of the last 12 months with only January and February seeing sales fall. According to Mark Stucklin, of Spanish Property Insight one of the main factors behind rising home sales is easier, cheaper mortgage credit. There were 17,450 new mortgages signed in July, up 27% on the same month last year, taking the number of sales involving mortgage financing to 46%, highest level since the boom years in the middle of the previous decade. Prices area also starting to recover. The data from the official house price index published by the National Institute of Statistics shows that they rose by 4%

over the 12 months to the second quarter of 2015. The Balearics saw the biggest rise in prices with growth of 7.3%, driven by a 7.8% rise in new build prices and a 7.4% rise in resale prices. Indeed, new and resale house prices have been rising since the second quarter of last year, and the trend appears to be picking up speed for both new and resale properties. But figures from the Notaries suggest that prices are not yet in recovery mode. The data from them shows prices down by 0.3% in the second quarter of the year. But Stucklin believes that there are reasons to be sceptical about the index. Compared to 2007, Spanish house prices are down 33%, according to the index with resale prices down 40% and new build prices down 24% while by region prices are down the most in Catalonia, where house prices now stand at just 58% of their level in 2007, and down the least in Andalusia, where they are now 76% of the 2007 level, down 24%.

Chinese Investors return to Spanish Property Market Chinese investment in Spain had gone quiet since the global economic meltdown. Many Chinese investors

page 50

were not only worried about the stability of markets in Spain, but also worried about the wider impact that the recession would present in their native homeland. This seems to have changed over the last year with a report published in the Chinese property portal Juwai, stating that Spain comes second as the most attractive Mediterranean country where Chinese investors wished to invest in property. The report also claimed that Chinese investment in Spanish real estate has jumped by a staggering 392% in under 12 months. During 2014, for Chinese real estate investment, Spain, Greece and Portugal were level, with Italy pushing in front, however the most recent report states that Spain comes second only to Cyprus. This news may come as a surprise to many, not least of all the Cypriots as only 6 months ago they were noted as being the least attractive country for the Chinese to invest in!

that the decline in property prices around the Mediterranean during the Crisis was the main factor for the huge increase in demand from Chinese investors. Other contributing factors have been the relative stability of the European markets, the increased wealth of Chinese Citizens and also the “Golden Visa” programme which has been implemented in numerous European countries where foreigners are granted a Visa in exchange for an investment in property. It has to be noted however that the majority of Asians still prefer to invest in the traditional markets and favour countries like the USA, Canada, the UK or New Zealand.

presented with a cheque for 150 euros, so again we thank all those ladies who attended on the following evening and helped local charities to continue their worthwhile causes.

Silly me! I thought things were calming down a little bit. Managing to rehome several dogs and a couple of donkeys………how wrong was I. We have several high profile cases going on at the moment which could well end up going to court. Both dogs and ponies this month have been found in appalling condition and living in absolute squalor, it is disgusting. Here at AAR this is usually a challenge we can’t refuse. We have the case of our beautiful Narlia from last month who incidentally is doing really well. Fantastic news too she has a home to go to into the UK, but, won’t be fit to travel for another 5 weeks as she has to finish all her treatments…..but her future looks safe and secure. I received some pictures a few days ago of a small boy and I instantly recognised he had leishmania. After lots of negotiations the owner released him into our care. He is so thin and scared. But, this boy now will get the best treatment and already he is so lucky as he is in the hands of one of wonderful foster carers. Leishmania is a horrible disease and can be deadly, but, if caught in time it is also very treatable and dogs can lead a happy and healthy life. Hopefully we will have more positive news on this boy next month, who has been named Charlie. If you haven’t logged on to our Facebook page yet, then take a look. I can’t possibly mention all the wonderful people who take care of our animals in this small article. As well as our volunteers we have a wonderful team of equine vets, small animal vets, farriers, beauticians, dentists. On our FB page you can see pictures of some our professionals in action and before and after pictures of some of our rescues. It is worth a look! Finally another of our rescues in this past week has been our Momma and her foal. Once again these two were found in the most appalling of conditions, so malnourished and the baby who I thought was maybe 6 months old is actually 2 years old. Heartbreaking is an understatement, after a lot of negotiations and going back and forth with the owner and the police animal unit, they were released into the care of AAR. Of course all of this takes resources, we are grateful for anything we receive be it small change or donations to PayPal at andreasanimalrescuemurcia@hotmail.co.ukIf you know of any establishments that would be willing to take one of our collection boxes then please contact me. As usual I will be on Camposol B car park every Monday between 1130-130pm to receive your donations of clothing, furniture, bric a brac etc. Alternatively you can take it to one of our shops in either Roldan or Mazarron Town between the hours of 11-2.

We would also like to thank Darrell for keeping us on the road. We have had an engine problem with our van and it has been off the road for more than 7 weeks. Darrell has been making our deliveries and collections, and we have been able to continue our Lidl runs with the help of Abdul and his van. We thank them both. Darrel is available on 615711825 if anyone needs a man with a van. We are starting our Christmas appeal this month. We are collecting chocolate this year, which makes a good gift for everyone. In addition and as always, we need donations of toiletries such as shampoo, shower gel, nappies, baby wipes, and ladies’ sanitary wear. Children’s clothing is also in high demand as usual. We are truly thankful for your continued support for our worthwhile cause to help those in our area who are less fortunate than ourselves.

As usual, our bi-annual event of the Fashion Show was very well attended on the 5th October at Mariano’s Restaurant. We thank you ladies for your continued support. Together with our volunteer models, for two of whom it was their debut event, so thank you Christina and Maria for your bravery in volunteering. Our gratitude also goes to all the volunteers who helped on the day, to Carol our compere, to Peter Smith our photographer and to DJ Daniel Wheatley. We raised the sum of 933.20 euros all of which goes directly to help those in our area who are struggling in this time of economic crisis. We also have to thank The Welcome Group, who on the following day had a Charity Fashion Show. All the proceeds from the raffle were split between the three local charities that put on the show namely ourselves, Making a Difference, together with both Age Concern and MABS. We were all

I said to the waiter, I said ‘This chicken I’ve got is cold’. He said ‘I should think so. It’s been dead for two weeks’. ‘Not only that’, I said, ‘It’s got one leg shorter than the other’. thorn in its foot. He removes it, and the elephant trots merrily away. Twenty years on, the man is standing in the street in London watching a circus procession pass by. When the elephant gets level with him, it stops, looks straight at him, reaches out with its trunk, lifts him bodily into the air, smashes him on the ground and jumps on him. It was a different elephant. “I was nearly a step-child, my Mother said she would have left me on someone’s doorstep if she’d had half a chance.” “My mother was always pulling my leg, that’s why one is six inches longer than the other.” “I bumped into an old acquaintance the other day, he told me he had taken a job as a postman. He said it was better than walking the streets.” And the back of his anorak was leaping up and down, and people were chucking money to him. I said “Do you earn a living doing that?” He said “Yes, this is my livelihood.” I was cleaning out the attic the other day with the wife. A friend of mine said, “You want to go to Margate, it’s good for rheumatism.” So I did, and I got it.... So I was having dinner with Garry Kasporov and there was a check tablecloth. It took him two hours to pass me the salt. He said “You remind me of a pepper-pot”, I said “I’ll take that as a condiment”.
