JOURNAL

THE Buenos Dias,

Welcome to the October edition the “The Journal” we have lots in store for you. Our very own Rod Sawyer is back from his travels and we think he may have found his calling as a travel writer! You can read all about it what he has been up to later in the magazine. This month we have our usual mix of news, information about what’s going on in the bars and restaurants, entertainment in the area, motoring, property and finance and some reader letters that we felt were worthy of sharing. Also this month we have some more information on the long awaited Farmacia that will be opening shortly here at the Business Centre on Camposol. For those of you that have been down to visit us recently you will have seen the changes that are taking place. The Farmacia is currently being fitted and will occupy the whole of the downstairs right hand side of the Business center and a new lift is being installed to make the upstairs accessible to everyone. Now on the top floor you will find: Shirley Ann Fisher Legal Services, The Journal, Another World Properties, Camposol Dental Clinic, GTH Constructions and Natalia the Chiropodist. It really is quite exciting to witness the arrival of what many will consider an essential service, and conveniently located next to the Health Center. Over the coming weeks we will be working on a new section for a magazine which is Top Secret at the moment, but we are sure that it will delight all our female readers! Go forth and enjoy, and when we meet again it will be November and surely time to light the log burners!

Camposol Farmacia Opening Soon! Those of you who have visited Camposol Business Centre on A sector recently will have seen the speed at which the work on the new Camposol Farmacia is taking place. The Journal has been told that it should open its doors in the middle of October. The Pharmacy aims to provide a number of services over and above the collection of prescriptions. From the day it opens it will provide services such as Clinical Analysis, Homeopathy, Orthopedics, Pharmocotheraputic follow up, Child Nutrition, and Dermocostmetics. We are also told that there are many more services in the pipeline. It really is great to see this much anticipated and talked about service become a reality, and now Camposol really does have everything that anyone could need right here on our doorstep. Another milestone reached for the area.

Reader E-Mail of the Month

Each and every month here at the Journal we receive a lot of e-mails, many of them from members of the public helping us to keep our finger on the pulse of the goings on around the region. We also receive a great many e-mails congratulating and thanking us for providing a great community magazine. What you are about to read is neither of the aforementioned, but I feel duty bound to publish it along with a response.

Dear Mr Rutherford. Having read your article in “The Journal” I was amazed what you feel about living in Spain. I found it inappropriate, offensive, and to a point of liable, typical of so many grumpy old men. You are the typical type of person that gives Camposol a bad name, a rotten apple. I have lived in Spain for many years and yes there is no utopia anywhere in the world, and yes Spain is in recession, and yes it is fighting back, but not with your help and attitude. I bet you were in the banking business, when you were working. The Rape and Pillage brigade. Your remarks about the Spanish holidays are not true, most of the companies now stagger there employee’s holidays I am sure you were not without food and water. As some other poor souls in neighboring Mediterranean coastlines. Possibly you could not get a new plumbing fixture for your pool, you only have to shop around the area and speak Spanish. The episode in the Post office was unfortunate but sometimes aggression which you seem to have draws aggression. May I suggest you did not come to Spain to integrate but to colonize. I also suggest you depart from Spain, the sooner the better. go back to where you come from and hopefully I will never read such almost racialist comments again. You should be ashamed. When you do go back, try catching a bus on a Friday morning, most of the transport staff are at prayers, and when you take your cocoa to bed with a James Herriot book, triple lock your doors and windows, there may be a riot outside, and remember you will never be told what you can do by your government heroes. Also you have one less reader and I will make it my job for you not to continue with the luxury of your advertising patrons who are trying to make a go of it, through economic adversity. I am not without certain influences in the area, I hope your advertising revenue does not fall, if it does, you and only you are to blame. I will forward this e mail to every patron of your magazine, unless (a) you promise to publish a remit and or apology (b) and you reply to me personally within 48 hours of your actions.(c) publish something good about Camposol. I refer you to page 17 of this Sept 2012 issue,Ref Advertising Spanish courses.not only are you out of line but seem to act in away of double standards. Sincerely, John Lindo Dear John, Having read your e-mail where you threaten to destroy The Journal by e-mailing all of our readers should we not comply with your demands, it occurred to me that this would be impossible as neither you or I have the e-mail address of everyone who reads the magazine. Therefore The Journal has taken the decision to print your e-mail to enable people to read it for themselves. It took quite some time to understand exactly what you found inappropriate and offensive about my article in the September issue, but from what I can gather you are upset with me for pointing out that getting things done in Spain in August can be difficult. I am bewildered as to why anyone would find this observation offensive. I don’t know why you feel that I’m a bad apple that gives Camposol a bad name. Like you, I have lived in Spain for many years. I work very hard on The Journal and we support a great many local and regional organizations, charities and groups. Mabs, Pals, Age Concern and the Camposol Fiesta Committee to name a few. Maybe there should be more bad apples like me. I also have no idea why you bring mention to the plumbing fixtures on my pool. The last time I checked they were fine, but should that change then thank you for the advice. You imply that I am racist, yet you seem to believe that all British transport workers stop working on a Friday morning due to prayers. Are you telling us that all Bus and Train drivers in the UK are Muslim therefore refuse to work on a Friday morning due to their religious beliefs? Perhaps instead of highlighting my alleged prejudices, you have highlighted your own. Maybe it is you Sir, who should feel ashamed. It is the last few paragraphs of your e-mail that I found to be the most disturbing. You tell me that you will make it your job to destroy The Journal by causing our advertisers to no longer advertise with us. You threaten carry out action against our business, unless we comply with options A, B or C. Is not the case that insisting someone carry out an action against their will by use of threat is Blackmail? Is Blackmail not a criminal offence? Does that not concern you? Are you are used to getting your own way by use of these means? Possibly. But not this time. In summary, and let’s be clear about this, you are blackmailing The Journal to print what you want us to say. If we don’t then you threaten to destroy our business. And of this is because I said that getting things done in Spain in August is difficult. I have never met you John, but I have trouble accepting that my observation could have invoked such anger and venom in anyone. Who really knows what your true motivation for writing to me was, but then, who really cares? You say you are not without influence in this community. Hopefully now those that you influence can see your true nature for themselves. Sincerely, Robert Rutherford

A Letter by Tom Finnegan

Dear Sir, It is now almost twenty one months since the meeting held on A sector which decided against Entity status. I thought it would be interesting to consider what would have happened if a more intelligent and considering meeting had been held.

Had an entity been decided upon at that time, those of us in favor of that status would have introduced a 25 euro per month community charge payable only by direct debit into the entity account. At this time (September 2012) we would have collected by now approximately five hundred thousand euros.(500,000) The sinking fund for road repair and improvement would now be standing at E50.000 The sinking fund for utility support would also have attracted E50.000 Our green bowlers would this summer have been enjoying their first season on our newly constructed bowling green situated adjacent to Avenida Saladillo. This Autumn we would have been laying the foundation stone of our ‘A’ sector community Hall.

NEWS

The gardening volunteers who have done such a wonderful job would have been properly funded and could have avoided the begging bowl. For a project next year, we would have been seeking to extend the terrace area outside the ‘A’ sector commercial centre past the tree line to create a pleasant café atmosphere. The obligatory ‘Administrator’ would only have been used for the legally required purpose. Ie. He would produce our end of year accounts from documentation supplied by our treasurer and bank accounts. Under no circumstances would our administrator have handled our money. He is required by law to be a signature on each cheque written but that would have been his only involvement in our finances. For his fee he would have been required to provide us with information on any government actions affecting our operation. The administrator would not have been allowed to place contracts for work projects, that aspect would have only been actioned by the central committee seeking the obligatory three competitive bids. f you do not believe that it is possible to control an administrator in this way I should tell you that there are people on ‘A’ sector who have seen me run an entity in this way and they will tell you that on the annual general meeting of that Entity the administrators only spoke when asked by me to do so and were asked only two questions. Vis.

Please provide this meeting with the audited financial results for the Entity during the past year. Please inform this meeting of any legislation emanating from the government or local authority which may affect this Entity. This is the ‘would have been’ Instead we are immersed in a local authority which is heavily in debt and quite unable to assist Camposol in any way. This Town Council struggles to pay its own way never mind assisting in the essential work that Camposol requires. The Town Council is itself located within a Region (Murcia) which is even more heavily in debt than the town council. Desperate days ahead for Spain and all local economies. It could have been so different for us on ‘A’. As the infra structure decays and Camposol looks more and more tired perhaps wiser heads will realize that within an Entity, life would have been so different. Tom Finnegan. N.B. We are all looking to Paramount to rescue local property values. But beware, If I were a member of the Paramount Board I would not want to commit billions into an economy facing the problems that does Spain. Hopefully Paramount will come riding to the rescue but we shall see.

National Day of Spain

Quick Facts It is an annual national public holiday in Spain on October 12. It commemorates when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas in 1492. Alternative names Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad) or National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España). What do people do? The king of Spain supervises the raising of the Spanish national flag in the center of Madrid on Hispanic Day. He and the prime minister lead a military parade after that. The parade includes representatives from most

Radio, television and Internet news services broadcast live on these events. Hispanic Day is a day off work and an opportunity to spend time quietly at home or in the company of family members and close friends. People in the Aragon region in the north-east of Spain also commemorate Our Lady of the Pillar, their patron saint, on October 12. Public life

Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, although there may be no services in rural areas. If October 12 falls on a Sunday, regional or local authorities can move the public holiday to a different date. If October 12 falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many businesses and organizations are also closed on Monday, October 11, or Friday, October 13. Get that Chimney sorted!

Well, after a very hot summer we have to think about winter, sorry, and keeping warm. Do you use a wood burner? When was the last time you had your chimney cleaned? Sweeping your chimney with chimney brushes and rods or having your chimney swept by a chimney sweep

is psrt of the correct operation of your stove or fireplace and is one of the most important tasks that is associated with having a wood stove of any kind. Tar, soot and deposit build up in the chimney and restrict the area; which ultimately causes smoke to blow back in your fireplace. If you have a soot fall in the chimney this can block the flue leading from the fireplace opening and make it smoke a lot. The build of deposits and tar in your

chimney can also lead to a chimney fire, which you definitely don’t want to happen. My Granddad trained me to sweep chimney’s with a brick, the Spanish use a chicken, Germany uses holly brushes but I have been trained to use rods.. Give me a call for a free quote Tony 646438694

Impressions of the UK and Spain

Rod Sawyer Just what is going on in the UK and Spain? The media portrays Spain as at best a basket case, in danger of sliding out of the Euro, virtually bankrupt, and the UK? Not much better and in danger of being carried under. There do appear to be some ex pats who believe that the UK should get out of Europe even! Even the BBC and the Guardian regularly fall off the tight rope and land in the better dead than European mire. The implications of withdrawal from the Union are pretty horrific for many ex-pats, what for example would happen to health cover for the over 65’s? The possibility of Spanish withdrawal from the Euro and the reintroduction of the Peseta could have equally problematic results, not least galloping inflation! Economic dislocation would almost certainly mean major social upheaval. My five weeks spent in the UK was most instructive! It was spent mostly in York but also in neighbouring Bradford and Halifax. What were my first impressions? The obvious, the shades of green all over the countryside, the tallness of the trees and the horrendous traffic on the roads, are all obvious differences. York has every appearance of prosperity.

page 10

The B and B we stayed in was mostly full, many Scots coming down south of the border for short breaks, none that we talked to in favour of a separate Scotland! York races packed with hooray Henries in suits and hats, thankfully too drunk by 8PM to be much trouble! Plenty of street musicians and street acts, but no beggars anywhere to be seen The supermarkets were chock a block, making ours in Spain look Spartan even the biggest ones, what a variety of produce, and the prices! How come I can buy Spanish tomatoes cheaper in York than here in Spain? Eating out was far better than ten years ago and the prices very comparable with Spain, unless you drink and smoke that is, in which case prices are significantly more. Bradford and Halifax did have more signs of recession, run down neighbourhoods, city centres almost closed down, Bradford especially sad with almost half the city centre now a hole in the ground, over the past ten years, the huge coop has gone and the old Odeon shuttered and caped in plastic. But these have been features of Bradford for the past ten years, not just the past three! We did eat out and the curries are as cheap and good as ever. Halifax has fared a bit better, but the mean city centre streets, closed shops do not look good. Everyone I met in the 18 to 60 age group was in work or studying. The main areas of concern seem to be the NHS where one friend was awaiting her fate under a review, and town hall employees, where

one friend was on his third tranche for redundancy. These latter two were in their fifties. Younger workers seemed , in the private sector, more secure, but very much overworked. One was putting in regular twelve hour days six days a week. Does a 2000 pound pay check compensate? Another in the public sector had taken on a promoted post at two thirds the pay of her predecessor! Impressionistically, fears and problems in the public sector, and work, work work in the private. House sales a bit like Spain, bumping along on the bottom, you can find buyers only at give away prices. We weren’t mugged, enjoyed going out at night in York, Halifax and Bradford. I get very similar feelings in Spain, but pay cuts, a 30% unemployment rate all make conditions here far more difficult than the UK? And should they be? What have Spanish bankers done that is so worse than their British counterparts? Is Mr Rajoy so much worse than Mr Cameron? I enjoy Spain, like working with the Spanish, love the weather. Although on this point I must admit to not missing August in Spain, since August in the UK was by and large warm and dry! The scare headlines which dog Camposol, are writ large for Spain and to a lesser extent the UK. In both countries it is a fact that the majority are still in work, keeping ahead of the game. Perhaps we all need to take the media with a large pinch of salt, forget the doom and gloom and look at the positives in our lives.

FAST have completed 67 call outs to date this year. Luckily residents have heeded the advice given over the hottest period and there have been no instances of heat related illness. FAST would like to thank the residents of Camposol for their unequalled support and particularly Rosemary Beak and the Welcome Group who have provided much support including financial support including latterly the purchase of blood pressure monitors to assist in essential monitoring and for use during events to give residents who have not visited a doctor recently a guide on their blood pressure as hypertension can be a major cause of heart disease. Dog Training Tips 1. Training should be an enjoyable experience for you and your dog. If you are not in the right mood for training, don’t even start. Keep training sessions short, on the order of 5-10 minutes, to maintain your dog’s motivation. If your dog doesn’t respond appropriately to a command after several attempts, don’t reward him. Resume training a few seconds later using a simpler command. Return to the

page 12

more complex task later. Always end training on a positive note. Ask your dog to respond to a command you know he will obey. Then reward him for a job well done and issue a finish command such as “free” or “release.” Avoid common words such as “okay.” Following a training session, both owner and dog should be left with a feeling of accomplishment. 2. Every dog should be familiar with the basic obedience commands, including come, heel, sit, down and stay. Teaching your dog to sit-stay and down-stay off leash is also a valuable lesson. Additional commands that are useful include: leave it, give it, stop it, and enough or cease. Keep in mind that a dog’s motivation to respond to a command decreases as the complexity of the task increases. The odds of success, hinge not only on the degree of sophistication of the task but also your dog’s motivation to respond. From a dog’s perspective the question is, which is more rewarding, chasing the squirrel or returning to the owner? Understanding this aspect will increase your patience and chances for success.

3.Training should not involve any negative or punishment-based components. There should be no yelling, no hitting, no chain jerking, no hanging, and absolutely no electric shock. Each session should be upbeat and positive with rewards for jobs well done. Remember that the opposite of reward is not punishment; it is no reward. If you ignore unacceptable responses, your dog will not be rewarded for his failed response. Most dogs want to please their owners or, at the very least, to obtain highly valued resources (food, attention and toys). 4. Ensure that your dog’s motivation for reward is highest during a training session. If food is the reward, train before a meal, not after. If praise, petting and other aspects of your attention are to be used as a reward, schedule the training session at a time when your dog hungers for your attention (for example, after you have returned from work). For complex tasks, such as the off leash down-stay, your dog will be more motivated to comply if he has received moderate exercise before the training session. Asking a dog that is bursting with

energy to remain in a prolonged reclining position is asking for failure during the early stages of training.

connection between his behavior and the reward.

5. Make sure the reward you offer in training is the most powerful one for your dog. Food-motivated dogs work well for food, but the treats used should be favorite foods for the dog, such as small pieces of cheese or freeze-dried liver. You want your dog to be strongly motivated to obey commands to receive the treat.

7. Use short commands such as sit, down, leave it, quiet, out, and off. Say the word once. Do not repeat the command. Dogs will remember a command for about two minutes before the notion is lost. Shorter words are better than longer words and words that end in a hard consonant (C, K, T, X) are better than those that end in a vowel because you can “spit” them out.

Food treats, if used, should be small – no bigger than the size of your little fingernail. The texture of the treat should be such that it does not require chewing and should not crumble, otherwise you will lose your dog’s attention as he Hoovers up the crumbs. Large treats, like Milk Bones®, take too long to eat, causing the dog to lose attention.

The only command that should have three sounds associated with it is come. In this case, you first have to attract the dog’s attention by saying his name, ROVER, then COME (the actual command word) and GOOD BOY, even before the dog comes so that he knows he is not in trouble. Make sure your tone is crisp and cheerful.

If praise is used as a reward, deliver it in high singsong tones, which are most pleasing for the dog. Also, enthusiasm in your voice will be much appreciated. If petting is to be used as a reward, it should be in a way that the dog enjoys, such as stroking the dog’s hair on the side of his face in the same direction that it grows, or scratching him on the chest. Note: Petting on top of the head is not appreciated by most dogs. 6. Timing of the reward is important. After a correct response, reward your dog within ½ second of the command to ensure that your dog makes the

Camposol Residents Association

After having to contend with living for the best part of a decade with the legacies of an unprincipled and inept developer and the ineffectual and indifferent attitude of a previous administration, there was a feeling of cautious optimism when Mazarron’s new elected administration stated that it intended that along with a policy of citizen participation and transparency they would bring about solutions for all the numerous practical and legal matters affecting the completion and legalization of the estate. With the end of the regular Spanish summer period of inactivity we are now entering what could perhaps be considered as, if not the next chapter, the next page in the continuing saga of Camposol and now might be an appropriate time to reflect on where we are at and more importantly where we are heading. The council has announced that the task of completing the urbanizations infrastructure and subsequent council adoption would progress sector by sector with the cooperation of developer Masa and would be financed from their performance guarantees. This process

page 14

was started on Sector A during the latter part of last year. Although there were still a number of outstanding road surface faults to be addressed the council ignoring the normal prerequisite that a state of acceptable completion should be first reached, announced earlier this year that they had rubberstamped the adoption of the sector. After this premature action to adopt the sector was questioned by the CRA the council explained that the intention is that financial considerations dictated that the outstanding work should be carried out in conjunction with that of the Sector B. It was expected that the further progression to complete Sector A would soon follow but after a period now exceeding six months it is disappointing to find there is no evidence of this. Previous questions that had had been put to the council had already brought about disclosures revealing that the procedures in obtaining the financing of the operation would be far from a straightforward and speedy. The Council have stated their belief that residents of the urbanization will be in possession of Habitation Certificates by the end of September and all will have full legal documentation including escrituras by the end of the year; however without

www.thecamposoljournal.com

a satisfactory conclusion to the D Sector rambla situation this will not be possible. The requirements of the Confederación Hidrográfica must be met before the necessary amendments can take place to the Plan General and the Plan Parcel that will then allow the issue of the escrituras to all affected. Despite a council statement in March that Town Hall technicians are reaching some degree of agreement regarding the rambla, as far as we are aware, nothing further has transpired. Apart from residents of Sector A who have contracts with Aqualia, the breakdown of the water companies unorthodox and questionable arrangement with developer Masa for the supply and charging of water and basura services has resulted in a certain state of limbo while new arrangements and contracts for the service are negotiated with the Town Hall. While this situation continues it is not possible for any bills to be issued and when the situation is finally resolved it is likely that some inflated requirements for the payment of the escalating arrears will fall on residents. When considering the various undertakings that have been made by the council it is not apparent at this time that much has been achieved and no amount of good intentions can compensate for actual

results. There must be some concern that the administration might be under estimating the complexities and magnitude connected to many of the issues. We hope this situation will soon change but If in the next few months there is still an absence of any significant progress there could be an increasing feeling of disillusionment and even skepticism creeping in. In the meantime the CRA will continue its policy of lobbying and questioning the council.

After the combined efforts of a small contingent of committee members and family members, a refurbished CRA Cabin re-opened on the 3rd September at its new location adjacent to the Cultural Centre. As previously the facility will be open Monday Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 1100 and 1300 hrs. Memberships of the CRA is free and open to all owners by way of visiting the cabin, email info@cracamposol.com or an application form can be downloaded direct

from the CRA website www.cracamposol. com. Thanks to the stores management the CRA have been allowed erected a dedicated notice board in the foyer of Consum Supermarket. This facility will contain relevant information concerning the CRA and Camposol such as minutes of meetings, contact details etc. Website: www.cracamposol.com e-mail: info@cracamposol.com

The argument between Ryanair and the Spanish Government gets bigger

The Spanish Secretary is travelling to Ireland today to discuss recent incidents on the airline. The Secretary General of Transport, Carmen Librero, is travelling to Dublin today to maintain a ‘meeting of collaboration’ with her counterparts to analyse the security incidents seen recently in Ryanair, and to strengthen cooperation. The news was given yesterday by the Secretary of State for Infrastructures,

Transport and Housing, Rafael Catalá, in a press conference where he also announced that the Development Minister, Ana Pastor, has asked for a meeting the European Commissioner for Transport and the vice president of the European Commission, Siim Kallas. The pilots union, SEPLA, has said it thinks that if Ryanair don’t take action, this is ‘doomed to disaster’. They say that the policy of cuts ‘could lead to complicated moments’ and the claim that Ryanair has taken the concept of ‘low-cost’ too far. SEPLA says that the company ‘moves in the limit of legality’. The pilots say having enough fuel means that have the time take decisions. Meanwhile Michael O’Leary has put two open letters on his website criticising the Minister and accusing her of document falsification.

In the letters Michael O’Leary goes on to criticise some articles in the El Mundo newspaper, and claims he has been subjected to false and inaccurate reporting in the Spanish media (or forged documents) by the AESA or the Ministry of Development.

In the letters he says that Ryanair is not a

Spanish Woman Claims She Owns the Sun and Wants to Collect Taxes

Angeles Duran, a woman from the Galician region of Spain, claims she is the rightful owner of the sun, and intends to have everyone pay taxes if they want to keep enjoying its rays and warmth. questioning the possibility of someone actually becoming the owner of the burning star. There is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals. An American was quick to pronounce himself owner of all planets and the moon, but he forgot to mention the sun, so she’s now claiming possession.

She has already consulted the Spanish Ministry of Industry and explained that her claim isn’t outrageous at all. If you can place taxes on rivers, why couldn’t she do the same with the sun, right. Jubilee done, Olympics done, ParaOlympics done, Murray’s Yawn Tennis won, there’s just the C -word ahead. Yes, Christmas is coming. Time to get ready for that little black dress/dinner jacket as the party season unfolds, so it’s ‘get fit ‘n thin time’, rev up those metabolisms, and drop the pounds the excesses of summer BBQ’s, booze and Ice cream unveiled. So will it be Zumba, Spinning, or Kettlebells? Maybe cycling around the campo as the Spanish seem to do with a vengeance?

I did five days a week of Zumba out here last summer. I loved it; leaping up and down to all sorts of music, then running home and swimming to cool off. My calf muscles were starting to look like a thoroughbred racehorse’s; I even experienced cramp for the first time in my life. Things were looking up, until I returned to Wales on a cold December night, heading across a chilly marina to the leisure centre, standing around an equally cold waiting area, then into a freezer- like fitness studio where, the class began, no warm-up whatsoever, and in less than 60 seconds the ‘pop’ was audible above the music and the twang of my right gastrocnemius muscle snapping shook the room. ‘Oh dear I’ve done something’ was my first, and obvious thought. ‘Carry on, they’ll think you’re an idiot!’ my second, as I tried to go left without much success. Three minutes later I was sitting in reception with my leg in the air, an icepack, two attendants, and an accident report form. And thence began my downward spiral into a winter of misery. Pass the mince pies. The C- word became a nightmare;elevate, compress and crutches meant shopping was out of the question-

Until rainy Easter, running to my soon to be discarded mountain bike (the brand new ladies roadster was arriving next day) I cycled four miles then fell off avoiding a speeding kerb. Two hospitals and one broken collar bone later, I arrived home to weeks of excruciating pain, returning to Spain with a ‘frozen shoulder’ finally healed through summer swimming. So, with that less likeable C-word we fear all around us, I have formed ‘Chicas Rapidas’ (Hah!) and we’re walking the MABS Race for Life on the 28th of October wearing glamorous wigs. I’m healed of my self-inflicted injuries, but this is for those who may not be so lucky. red supergiant star Antares. (Did you find Scorpio last month?) As with many constellations it is almost impossible to visualize the image of an archer but, as luck would have it, the eight brightest stars of Sagittarius form a much easily recognizable asterism in the shape

of a Teapot. If it’s a particularly clear night you may also spot The Teaspoon You will need to look for the Teapot as soon as it starts goes dark as it dips below the horizon around 11.00pm. Around midnight over in the East, Taurus (the Bull), and the first of the major winter constellations starts to rise into the night sky. Taurus should be fairly easy to spot with its main star the orange-red giant Aldebaran and the proximity of the planet Jupiter which is the brightest object in the immediate area at the moment.

with Keith Jackson

October is a bit of a transitional month for me as many of the summer constellations are still with us as we move from summer to autumn and on into winter. For instance, Cygnus the Swan, Lyra the Harp and Aquila the Eagle whose leading stars make up the Summer Triangle can still be found overhead and can be tracked westward until they finally set below the horizon in December. However, if the sky is clear you may just catch a final glimpse of the summer constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer) which is now very low in the southern sky. In Greek mythology, Sagittarius represents a centaur, a half human, half horse creature with the torso of a man and the body and four legs of a horse. The centaur is depicted as aiming an arrow toward the heart of the neighbouring constellation Scorpio, represented by the

Japanese Katsu Curry We were introduced to this through the excellent Japanese restaurant in Bradford, now sadly closed. The Japanese restaurant in York also serves this mean curry. It is

Anyone who is into Japanese food knows that katsu curry is wickedly wonderful. What makes it stand out from other curries is that the meat is breaded and fried before having a luxurious silky curry sauce slathered all over it. not difficult to prepare and is served with To make the sauce, heat the oil in a small plain rice.. If you prefer then use smoked chicken (wonderful) or just a plain cooked pan. Add the onion and garlic and sautÊ for 2 minutes, then throw in the carrots chicken, stripped! The flan recipe, a delicious egg custard, dates back to Roman times. The Romans domesticated chickens and eggs were plentiful. It started out as a savory dish but in Spain, became a sweet Spanish dessert with caramelized sugar. The Spanish brought it to central and South America, where it is very popular. It is often made in a mold. The perfect dessert for children, it is made with lots of eggs and milk making it quite nutritious. Children can help beat up the custard ingredients, while you make the carmelized sugar. There are many variations to the flan recipe, including Flan de Cuba which adds egg whites and cinnamon stick. The Moors added citrus and almonds. A Puerto Rican version uses extra eggs, producing a firmer texture. A Venezuelan recipe, flan caraqueno adds blanched almonds, crackers and blended egg whites and yolks Recipe for Flan 1.5 cups sugar 1 -- 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk 2-- 13 oz cans evaporated milk 1 tb vanilla 6 large eggs Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Custard Beat the eggs with a hand mixer. Add in the condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla and ½ cup sugar. Mixture should be smooth. Carmelized Sugar Over medium heat stir 1 cup of sugar until it is brown and caramel-like. This should take approximately five minutes, stirring constantly. Then, immediately pour several tablespoons of the caramel into 6 individual molds. Coating the bottom and sides with the caramel. Pour the custard into the carmelized molds. Fill a baking dish with 1 inch of water and place the six molds in the baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven. It is done when a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. After the molds have cooled place them into the refrigerator. When ready to serve, invert each mold onto a small plate.

Out & About

With Rod Sawyer

I was glad to get back from the UK; a month living out of a suitcase is too long. We missed the weather, even if it was too hot, there are always the sea and the pools, friends and the dogs! The hottest summer in seventy years has cooled slightly and we now face the mid thirties rather than the mid forties.

It hasn’t cooled down the visitors. Saturday night on the Paseo was packed with a mixture of Spanish and British. We went with two friends to Viggo and got there, booked in, at 7.30PM. The meal was great, steamed mussels, and a great pile of them rather than a lonely half dozen you get elsewhere, grilled hake with chips for two, and a very juicy, expertly cooked sirloin steak for the other two. They also do pizzas and many other Italian dishes, which we aim to try. By 8.30PM there were twenty folk waiting for tables, and this queue did not diminish for two hours. Last real weekend of the holidays? Credit crunch? Just loads of folk out enjoying the balmy air and some Spanish music, except the meanies at the next table who wouldn’t even give the very good Spanish singer and guitarist a proverbial sou! They were Brits of course! The Sunday before we hadn’t booked in anywhere for Sunday lunch, we both thought the other was booking. It’s a good sign that it is still necessary to book for Sunday lunch at virtually every restaurant. Although luckily the great staff at Cats managed to squeeze us in once. We decided to hit the port and at 1.30PM were passing the Saladillo on the road out of Camposol. The horseman and dancers were there, so we came to an abrupt halt and decided to give the place a try, the first time in years. It was a treat watching the horses and

dancers. Exquisite costumes, twirls, horses beautifully groomed. We ate inside after the horse show and enjoyed the meal. As with Viggos, chose the steamed mussels. These were nice but disappointing 8 euros for a dozen mussels seems a bit pricy! The main, a meat and a fish dish were excellent with very good chips. The tapas on the counter also looked very inviting. The restaurant itself is smarter than of yore, with table cloths. The meal was not cheap, but the quality good and we will go and watch the horses again in the future. This last Sunday we finally booked in at the Vista on A. Their Sunday lunch has now been in operation for some time, it’s a nice airy open restaurant with splendid views over Camposol. They now have a new menu and are providing a full range of meals, including their excellent 3.50 euro full English. Sunday lunch is less than 10 Euros for two courses, 6.50 for just the main. Choice of beef, pork or chicken, excellent roasties with the veg and gravy served separately, everything fresh cooked! The starters and desserts are all interesting and very tasty. Try the fresh fruit salad! Bingo on Friday at Cats, the quiz at Tels on Tuesday, we’ve promised ourselves a trip to the seaside later in the week. According to information received the average pool temperature is now 24degs, but the sea is much warmer. At least the early evening is becoming more doggy friendly in terms of walks. One small point! I didn’t know but have discovered that my crip cart, sorry electric scooter is carried free of charge on the planes back to the UK. On our last trip we decided to hire a small buggy. The shop in York told us it would be as cheap to buy second hand and resale. Well we didn’t resale, but brought it back with us. Means the whole of the Paseo now accessible to me since this buggy dismantles into four pieces and is easily stowed. As some of you have seen, I am walking better, but two years of no exercise has complexly de-fitted me! Walking round the polygono is a challenge. The pool has been a God send and I have spent a lot of time swimming, but sadly 24 degs is just a bit cool to stay in for an hour at a time.

Some time ago Luis Canovas from the Camposol Business Center took over the running of the security company on Camposol. At the time the security company was running at a loss and faced closure if subscriptions to the service did not increase. In a bid to encourage more people to sign up to the scheme Luis introduced a special offer where if a number of people from any street or polygono signed up to the scheme then they would benefit from a discounted rate reducing the price of the service from 17€ a month to only 10€. He also promised that if enough people signed up from separate polygonos he would extend this offer to the whole sector. The discount would not only apply to new subscribers but also to existing customers as well. This offer was well received and currently D and B sector residents are all receiving the discounted rate. No good deed goes unpunished however as this has led to existing customers on A and C feeling discriminated against as they are still subject the higher charges. “We want to be able to offer this discounted fee to not just our existing customers but to everyone on sectors A and C” says Luis. “We are working hard to promote a business that is in the interest of the community, but the special offer we have must be the same for everybody. We need only a small number of more clients

to subscribe and then everybody can enjoy this low rate. We offer a service that is invaluable to our clients and we wish to continue to do so.”

If you would like more information on joining the security scheme then please visit the Camposol Business Centre or call: 968 103 008.

CAMPOSOL SECTOR D GARDENING AND COMMUNITY GROUP DONATE TO FAST.

SECTOR “D” COMMUNITY AND GARDENING GROUP NEWSLETTER SEPT 2012

Your committee’s first meeting following our Summer Break was held on 3 Sept 2012 and the Minutes of this can be seen on our website and notice board. It was decided at the meeting that a newsletter for all residents was due to inform you all of the progress achieved and the work planned for the following months. During the break many of our volunteers have continued to work and contribute to the look of D and help collect funds for future projects. The busiest of these have been the people who look after our lovely gardens, our burning/compost pit helpers and our general “cleaner-uppers”. A big thanks is due to them from us all. What has happened this year? Our pot-holing repair team worked from Jan thru to June repairing many damaged areas of our roads and will continue with these rewarding and much appreciated improvements to our roads and some walkways. FAST volunteers can be seen at the back The three main areas where noticeable of the presentation. and considerable work was carried out were: New volunteers are always required and The Jubilee Garden by the exit to D. if you would like to consider becoming The Memory Gardens by D25 one then contact FAST Coordinator on The Petanque Courts at D10 and D30 634313572. Smaller areas were cleared, gravelled and had stone benches sited by the group assisted by local Bespoke Garden Design and Maintenance residents. Our Compost Team kept the burning pit area clean and tidy and this year For all aspects of Garden maintenance and design we extended the call 679582410 for a free no obligation quote. size and depth of three pits due to the high amount of green waste. The burning ceased on 15 May due to fire regulations and will commence again sometime in October. On the Social side we had a very successful and patriotic Jubilee Dance shared with Camposol’s The Camposol Sector D Gardening and Community Group held a Jubilee Dance in the Golf Club in conjuction with the Camposol FAST (First Aid Support Team) . A raffle was held and 529 euros was raised. A further 121 euros were raised by a FAST relative in a sponsored swim in the UK. This total of 650 euros was presented to the FAST Coordinator, Gerry Bradshaw by Les and Linda Crook of the D Group’s Fundraising Committee.

Evergreen

FAST Team and a sum of 540 euros was donated to FAST. Our Summer BBQ was also a success. We held a Fun Quiz night and had a couple of “Sausage Butty” afternoons after our Friday work. The Thursday Pot-holers and Friday volunteers had a self funded afternoon Chinese MDD down the Port. All of these events and Friday collections help to generate a tremendous Community Spirit and we are all proud to be part of D Community. PTO Future Projects. At our meeting we decided that five main areas would be created, improved or extended by our Friday gravelling and weeding team. These are: The open land on D27 Calle Sorvilan Land adjacent to D34 Extensions to the gardens on D25 and D29 Extensions to the Jubilee Garden The Welcome Sign area to be tidied up. The digger we hire will be used to carry out the heavy weed clearing needs. Two committee members are to investigate the hire of a road sweeper to clean up ALL the roads on D. Thanks to the continuing generosity of our D residents we have very healthy bank balance and these projects will of course be funded from that. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D looks wonderful due to the dedication and hard work of a small number of volunteers but the work we carry out, more often than not, requires a degree of maintenance such as minor weeding and plant watering. Presently one couple look after the majority of these needs but the increased amount of areas is making this job very time-consuming (every day) and is becoming a burden. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please, please, consider giving our D Community a couple of hours of your time to help maintain the areas of improvement that your group of volunteers work tirelessly and hard to create. We need residents living near such areas to take charge of the maintenance and with other local residents help keep them looking as good and perhaps better than the day they were created. WE NEED YOU! D7 residents have adopted their roundabout and have a rota for maintaining it. Other areas DO the same but many are not looked after. HOW DO I HELP? , All details of reps are on our Noticeboard where our

Bucketeers work on Friday mornings. You can also contact me on 968131971 or 666863670 or Bob Owen on 986970577 or Les Crook on 968979831. PLEASE HELP! Of course more volunteers would always be appreciated on our Friday morning work sessions that will commence on the 28th September, weather permitting. Check our D Exit noticeboards for times/ locations. Help improve YOUR COMMUNITY and also meet new nice friends who during the past four years have knitted this community into the SUCCESS we now enjoy. Mick Drummond, Chairman .

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group Our volunteer working parties began again in mid September and we’d like to appeal to anyone who can spare a couple of hours on Wednesday mornings to please come and help continue the great improvement of our area: We meet at the Sensol Villas office (old Masa office) at 9am. Breakfast is a free perk, and don’t worry if you cannot do heavy work; there are light duties of weeding,

planting and watering! Come along and make new friends; we’ve just had many new mature trees and plants delivered to replace those which didn’t survive the hot weather, so even if you’re only here on holiday, you’ll be beautifying your whole community! The maintenance scheme has continued cleaning, weeding and spraying the streets of ‘C’ in strict rotation and watering the plants throughout the hot Summer. Thanks to all who spare a minute to take care of any plants near their homes, and who have offered our working parties refreshments! Our group is totally dependent upon your help and donations - If you see our teams out and about please contribute a little to their bucket, or better still; join our scheme for a donation of only 5 Euros a month! Every Euro of each member’s monthly payment is used to enhance the whole area of ‘C’, which improves as each month passes thanks to you all! The new green waste container sited at the junction of Calles Aralia and Ibiscum has unfortunately not been emptied by the council since it arrived: this is due to the lorry needing repairs. By the time you read this, the collection will

hopefully be regular once more but in the meantime please clip your green waste and put it in the rubbish bins, or delay your pruning, thank you. Don’t forget our Auction of promises at 8pm on 12th October at the Golf Club with DJ Dan - only 1 Euro donation per person admission enabling you to bid for the ‘promise’ of someone else’s time or skills: There are quite a few donations so it should be a popular event! If you’d still like to donate an unwanted item, or have a special skill which would raise money for us (and your popularity in the community!) please let us know asap. Please save the date, too, for our Christmas Carvery Meal & Dance on 5th December at the Golf Club with live music from Wildcat supported by Disco Dan. Tickets 18 Euros from Ann 968 974 951 or John 634 325 427. Please check chalkboards, Facebook and website for any more news http://www. greenfingersgardenandsocialgroup.com/

Spanish new car sales up 3.2% in August The new car sales in Spain rose by 3.4 percent in August to 48,820 cars. This increase is for the first time in this year as customers purchased vehicles before the scheduled tax hike this month. ANFAC, Car Manufacturer’s organization said that this is an unbelievable increase in Spain after seven long months. ANFAC pointed out that about 10,000 private customers brought forward purchases of cars before the tax rise. Even though the car sales here reported a rise, the overall trend was not up to the expectations, as it shows a drop of 8.5 percent in sales during the first eight months of the year. “The last part of the year, especially September and October are going to be a disaster. We are going to see a sharp fall unless sellers hold the sector up by making aggressive offers,” said a spokesman for car distributors’ association Faconauto when asked about the recent hike in car sales. According to the reports of ANFAC, more than 520,216 cars were sold in Spain during the first eight months. It is expected that not more than 700,000 would be sold in the whole year. Meanwhile, new car registrations in France fell for the tenth consecutive month, as per French industry group CCFA. The association reported that the turn down in August was 11.4 percent when compared to the same month previous year. CCFA also stated that the overall French registrations through August fell 13.4 percent to 1.29 million.

Mini Paceman The production version of the MINI Paceman has been revealed, ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut

See our main advert on page 12 page 28

Only four engine variants will be available in the Paceman, starting with the petrol-powered Cooper and Cooper S, while the Cooper D and Cooper SD diesels are also on offer.

The MINI Paceman has become the eighth model in MINI’s ever-expanding line-up. The Paceman is based on the Countryman, but loses a set of doors and gains a few additional details to help differentiate it.

All are available with ALL4 four-wheel drive and each makes the Paceman a tenth

Most striking are the rear lights, which – for the first time on a MINI – are mounted horizontally. Also, the roof is lower and now sweeps downwards, giving the Paceman a profile similar to the Range Rover Evoque. There’s also a large Paceman badge across the boot

lid – also a first for the brand. The interior has a few subtle changes over the Countryman, too. The standard seating arrangement is 2+2 (an option in the Countryman), and the car comes with MINI’s Centre Rail, which lets you slide accessories such as drinks holders from front to rear. And to the joy of many MINI owners, the electric window controls have moved from the centre console to the armrests. Sports seats come as standard for the driver and passenger.

of a second quicker from 0-62mph than the Countryman. That means 7.5 seconds for the front-wheel drive Paceman Cooper S. Fuel economy is identical to the Countryman, ranging from the lowest figure of 42.1mpg in the ALL4 Cooper S to 64.2mpg for the frontwheel drive Cooper D. The Paceman is more than simply a Countryman with a couple of doors missing and a more stylish design – it’s good fun to drive. The sharper handling is down to stiffer chassis settings, retuned power steering and a reduction in ride height of 10mm. However, the softer, higher set-up of the Countryman is available at no extra cost for buyers who value ride comfort over handling. The MINI Cooper Paceman will arrive in the UK in March 2013 and starts at £18,970 – that’s £940 more than the Cooper Countryman – and tops out at £24,290 for the Cooper SD ALL4 model.

Every two years the Lost Weekend that is the Ryder Cup, comes around. The biannual competition between United States and holders Europe is to be played at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. It could be difficult to follow all the action without a Sky subscription, but there will be continuous coverage from Friday morning of the 28th right through to the closing ceremony on the Sunday evening. The biggest milestone has already passed – the Team selections and the Captain’s Picks. The European Team automatically selects the first five Europeans from the World Ranking and the Top five players from the European Order of Merit. Jose Maria Olazabal then selected the twonext best players in his opinion – Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts. The Teams are: U.S. Tiger Woods Bubba Watson Jason Duffner Keegan Bradley Webb Simpson Zach Johnson Matt Kuchar Phil Mickelson Dustin Johnson Jim Furyk Brandt Snedeker Steve Stricker Europe Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) Justin Rose (England) Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland) Paul Lawrie (Scotland) Francesco Molinari (Italy) Luke Donald (England) Lee Westwood (England) Sergio Garcia (Spain) Peter Hanson (Sweden) Martin Kaymer (Germany) Ian Poulter (England) Nicolas Colsaerts (Belgium) Days 1 and 2 consist of pairings – Foursomes and Four Balls. The last day is the dramatic Singles, and the above mouth-watering line up is a possibility.

page 30

A key skill for the Captains is who to play and who to leave out, on the first two days, then where to play your team on the final day. The usual strategy is to put your strongest three or four players out first in order to gat some wins in place early. Then put your next strongest into positions 6 or 7, the fill out the rest with the weaker players at the end. This is because statistically, the final two games are rarely completed as the match is often already over before the last tow games come in. Colin Montgomery was scathing in his criticism of Sir Nick Faldo four years ago, because he put Padraig Harrington out last at number 12, on the assumption that the match might come down to the final game. Sir Nick hadn’t done his homework and Padraig’s talents were wasted. In the end the Europeans lost. This time the Europeans are looking strong. Europe is being carried into the Ryder Cup on a tidal wave of Tour wins, McIlroy’s victory at the US PGA ends a remarkable run of six wins by members of Jose Maria Olazabal’s team in the past four weeks. Peter Hanson followed McIlroy (three wins in four weeks), Paul Lawrie, and Sergio Garcia into the winner’s circle at Hilvershum.

each player putts. For the home team, they know that when their putts go in, there will be an enormous cheer from the crowd. This can be hugely inspirational. For the away team, the silence is daunting. There are 10,000 people willing you to miss. If you do miss, there is a respectful two-second silence followed by a huge roar of encouragement for the home players. Some players thrive in this atmosphere. Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Colin Montgomery, and of course, Jose Maria Olazabal – they all love the cut and thrust of this competition. Then there is the Opening Ceremony. In no other sport will you see a parade of WAGS. The wives and girlfriends are paraded in designer uniforms to accompany the players. It doesn’t happen in the women’s version of the Ryder Cup – the Solheim Cup. Is this sexist? It is hard to deny. It may have merged out of the cheerleading preamble to US sport, but it is an odd tradition. On the topic of sexism in golf, the world’s most exclusive golf clubs, Augusta National invited former Secretary of State

Despite this, the home side usually has a great advantage. This is due to the passionate crowds. We were part of the crowd at Celtic Manor two years ago. There is a limit of 40,000 spectators. There are only 4 games to watch, so you get 10,000 people watching each one. It is a unique experience. Golf is played in silence, usually. So 10,000 people are all hushed up as

Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first female members since the club was founded in 1932. “This is a joyous occasion,” chairman Billy Payne said Monday. For some, it was a long time coming.Martha Burk and her women’s advocacy group first challenged the club 10 years ago over its all-male membership. The debate returned this year when IBM, one of the top corporate sponsors of the Masters, appointed Virginia Rometty as its chief executive. The previous four CEOs of Big Blue had all been Augusta National members. The battle ended in typical style for Augusta National, with an understated announcement that left even Burk stunned. “Oh my God. We won,” she blurted out when contacted by The Associated Press. Burk was not the first advocate to draw attention to women being left out, but it was an exchange with former chairman Hootie Johnson in 2002 that ignited the issue. Feeling as though the Augusta National was being bullied, Johnson stood his ground, even at the cost of cutting loose television sponsors for two years, when he famously said the club might one day ask a woman to join, “but that timetable will be ours and not at the point of a bayonet.” The comment became a slogan of the club’s sexism. This now leaves St Andrews and Muirfield needing to follow suit, and preferably in advance of the next Open at Muirfield. So, the Lost Weekend is looming. Continuous coverage in HD and 3D means that I only leave my seat for comfort breaks. I can’t wait. I predict a tight game and a narrow victory for the Europeans. Of course!

Tug of war an Olympic Sport? Really? In August we printed an article featuring 10 true and funny Olympic facts. One of the facts was that Tug of War was an Olympic Sport between 1900 and 1920. In our article we mentioned that the sport was favoured by “overweight beer drinkers”. One of our regular readers , Tug of War Association member and former International Tug of War judge, Don Cruickshank, wasted no time on setting the record straight with us here at The Journal. It turns out that Tug of War is still a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Tug of War is held at the World Games every 4 years which is run under the patronage of the IOC for sports that are not yet part of the Olympic Games. It seems that the sport is hugely popular worldwide and the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) are focusing a lot of time and effort into having the sport reinstated into the Olympics. Due to its accessibility, it does not require large amounts of costly equipment, space or bespoke stadia. Faster, Higher, Stronger is the Olympic motto and Tug of War certainly fits the bill. So who knows, Rio 2016 may well play host to the first Olympic Tug of War in over 100 years! A massive thanks to Don for setting the record straight. If you would like more information then please visit www.tugofwar.co.uk. Here, not only will you find a plethora of information, but you will also see that this sport is massive worldwide!

In this picture, the UK team takes on Ireland at the 1908 games, where they would go on to beat USA for the gold. But according to National Geographic, that UK team may have cheated by wearing spiked boots.

Property, Financial and Legal Spanish bank accounts

I would like to start this month with Spanish bank accounts. Anyone that has an account in Spain please take note. I am sure you are aware of the excessive amounts that the UK banks charge when you go overdrawn, the banks in Spain are just as bad! The greatest danger of your account being in the red are the dreaded overdraft fees and default interest. A delay in transfer, an unexpected expense or a simple forgetfulness can end up being very expensive. But how expensive? What commissions are you going to pay? It is true that not all banks charge the same fees or default interest, but I must say that they are fairly similar and that there is a reasonable average calculated by the Bank of Spain. What are overdraft fees? These are the different fees for overdraft they apply: • Commission’s claimed for debit positions. This is the amount they charge in informing you that your account has been revealed. According to the Bank of Spain, its average is 32.65€ (range 30.00€ and 36.50€) • Commission applied. This is a percentage that is applied to the largest negative amount that has been in the account in the period. This has a minimum value determined by each bank. In 2012, its average value is around 4.23% and its minimum is half of 13.52 € A bank overdraft, therefore, costs on average a minimum of 46.17€, which then

has added interest for late payment. What is the interest for late payment by bank overdraft? Each bank sets its own interest, although according to the Bank of Spain may not exceed 2.5 times the legal interest, which in 2012 is 4%, that interest shall not be overdraft exceed 10% APR (including also the cost of commissions). But in practice this is not fulfilled and the common interest rate hovers around 29% APR . Utility Bills. Another issue, (not so much with the banks) the problem is, that in some cases if there is not enough money in your account to pay the bill, it will not be paid. Then when the next bill comes it is without the amount from the previous bill that was not paid. You pay the new bill as there is now money in the account and the next and so on. so you think nothing about the missed bill. You might get a reminder in the post if you are lucky! If you are keeping up, some way down the line they cut off the utility because of an unpaid bill 6 to 8 months ago, very annoying and expensive. To reconnect can take time and be as much as 80€.

Euribor The one-year Euribor, the main benchmark for mortgages, closed April at 1.368%, representing a reduction of more than one tenth for the month of March and seven tenths in one year. This will allow a reduction in the share of mortgages that are reviewed in the month of May. For an average mortgage of 150,000€ with a repayment term of 25 years, the savings is 52€ per month and 624€ per year, which may represent a monthly fee. This is the lowest since July 2010. In the month of April 2010 it was 2.086% and in January of this year 1.837%. The Euribor is the rate at which banks lend money in the euro area and, therefore, depends largely on the interest rate set by the European Central Bank (ECB). At this time, with a nominal interest rate of 1% and average inflation in the euro zone around 2.7%, the real interest rate is negative. That is, money loses more value for inflation than it gains by the profitability of the interest rate.. Savings Rate

ARE YOU MAKING FALSE ECONOMIES? TAKE ACTION TO SAFEGUARD YOUR HEALTHCARE IN SPAIN AND INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH The Spanish social health system (Seguridad Social) like the NHS in the UK, is designed and funded to ensure that it can cater for the emergency treatment of all persons in possession of either a European Medical Travel emergency card (EH1C) or a SIP card. You may use these cards at your local Medical Centre (Centro Salud) or Social Security Hospital. However, you will notice that the key word with the EH1C card is, in a travel emergency situation. In order to obtain fully comprehensive cover from the Spanish Social system, you will need to qualify for a full SIP card. Full SIP card entitlement will only be granted by the Spanish authorities to those persons who can show that they qualify through working and paying contributions into social system funds, presenting the correct paperwork from their country of origin to show that they qualify for reciprocal funding or by applying to make voluntary contributions. The days are long gone whereby SIP cards were once issued just because Expats had taken up residence

in certain districts. Due to the ongoing global financial crisis, Spain will be taking a close look at where it can make even more savings. The Spanish social health system is already under staffed and grossly under funded. Therefore foreigners not contributing to the social system can no longer expect to receive anything other than emergency medical treatments while these circumstances exist. Indeed, many people who are already in possession of a SIP card are taking out a private health insurance. This precautionary measure ensures that they have all the additional benefits that this affords them: Immediate access to private hospitals and private physicians. A personal advisor in one of our customer service offices to support your medical needs. No language barriers. No waiting periods for doctor’s appointments and/or emergency operations. Extensive annual medical preventative check ups. Do not make false economies in this current climate of economic difficulty. Invest in your health and insure yourself adequately with a private health insurance from ASSSA. We currently have some exceptional offers of up to 30% discount on

our brochure prices, for the entire lifetime of your policy. Starting from day 1 of your policy, you can qualify for the benefit of an extensive medical check to include for ladies, a mammography and mammarian scan, smear test and bone density test to detect the early signs of certain cancers and osteoporosis. For gentlemen, PSA blood test, Electrocardiogram (E.C.G.) and urological scan, to detect the early signs of prostate problems, cancer and heart disease. The premium to obtain these valuable services starts at under 50 years old from around 60€ per month – excellent value for money. Amongst many other benefits, in addition, you would be entitled to 30 to 60 physiotherapy treatments each year. For example, you do not have to endure back pain any longer with the benefit of immediate treatment. ASSSA private medical insurance premiums start from as little as 43€ per month, so there is really no reason not to have the peace of mind that results from having some form of cover in place. ASSSA offers unique guarantees: The age you join is the age you stay – no increase in premiums due to simply growing older. Guaranteed for life – cover is guaranteed irrespective of advanced age or your claims profile. The flexibility to move to us from your

current insurer without loss of cover for those conditions already covered by them. Why not ask us for a completely nonobligatory personal quotation? We will be pleased to advise you and answer any questions. In order to ensure a first class service for our clients we stay close to you through our local customer service offices along the coast with a personal advisor at your disposal. Our multilingual female advisors take time to offer non-committal consultation and advice in order to recommend the right level of insurance for both your budget and medical needs. We are also happy to make hospital and doctors appointments for you including those for your annual medical checks. In addition to health insurance, ASSSA also offer very attractive terms for Dental and Funeral Insurance and would be – both also offering immediate cover. Why not just call in and see us! There is surely an Asssa office or Agency close by to you, or you can telephone any of our offices for a personal appointment. Also by email, we are happy to answer your questions in your language. Selling Up In Spain For many different reasons we have seen a large number of Brits selling properties in Spain over the last 24 months. Currencies Direct have helped hundreds of people to maximise the sterling they receive when repatriating their funds back to the UK. Fee-Free Bankers Drafts and Transfers When you receive payment for your property in Spain it is likely that the buyer will settle with a banker’s draft, banks in Spain can charge up to 1.25% of the value of the draft to deposit it into your own account. On a property of €200,000 this could cost you up to €2500! If you take a Euro bankers draft to the UK to deposit, the charges are even higher and it can take up to 8 weeks to clear the draft and you are likely to receive a very poor exchange rate from your UK bank. Currencies Direct have a developed a unique national agreement with la Caixa bank – the largest savings bank in Europe. If you are registered with Currencies Direct you can open a “la Caixa” Currencies Direct account for free and start receiving a number of key benefits. For those depositing a Spanish bankers’

draft the most immediate benefit is that la Caixa will waive the usual fees – so you will pay nothing to deposit your cheque. Along with this benefit there are no charges to send money to Currencies Direct and no receiving fees in any UK bank when you make transfers using Currencies Direct. Your online banking (if you require), is in English and you benefit from La Caixa’s network of more than 5500 branches across Spain. Peter and Susan Bishop used the service when they wanted to send funds back to the UK. They were really impressed with Currencies Direct:“the speed and efficiency delivered by Currencies Direct and their arrangement with la Caixa made our transfer back to the UK very simple and ensured we had no banking fees” Currencies Direct has been established in Spain for more than a decade and we’ve helped thousands of people to save serious money on their property purchases and sales. We have offices in four locations covering the key areas on the coastline where we find most Brits are likely to settle. Our head office is in London and we have offices around the world to provide an exceptional service for our 200,000 private and business customers.

Miguel Ataz Ruiz “la Caixa” - Director of la Caixa Camposol office on sector B, would be delighted to discuss commission free banking with you in more detail. Miguel can be contacted by email on mataz@lacaixa.es Tel.: +34 968549920 or in person at the branch. For more information about the services of Currencies Direct and to receive a free no obligation consultation, please visit one of our offices, or contact me directly, Andrew Brown – Regional Sales Manger and I will be happy to discuss your currency requirements with you in our office or in the comfort and privacy of your home. 0!,3 %6%.43 Summer has now left us with its 40 degree heat and now we are into the more pleasant 20´s. The beaches are empty and you can actually get a drink in a beach side bar. How lovely, that would be. Here we are though still running our charity and sorting out the sick and injured animals, whilst looking after the ones that are already here. Salvador this month went for his castration, he amazed us with his party trick though beforehand, He managed to rear up throwing his front legs over the gate then slid along so that the gate rested into his stomach, front legs out of the stall the back legs inside and just managing to touch the floor. Getting him off was a relatively simple matter, open the gate slide him along it and off the end, job done. Perfect.......Next day..........exactly the same only he tried it over the block wall. Not so simple a job this time. So we built a staging out of blocks and lifted his legs until he managed to climb the wall and land in the next stall. Great no injuries no problems.........Next day however we did have a problem when he not only managed to get his front legs over the wall/gate but also his back legs. We came home from the morning in the shop to find him in the paddock. Manuka in a state having been chased around and sporting some small cuts and bruises. We rendered first aide to her injuries and the donkeys were settled for the night. The following morning Manuka had a swelling to the lower neck. A trip to Alicante (San Vicente) hospital and she was sorted with anti inflammatory and pain killers. Salvador was booked in for the following day. Anyway all´s well that ends well, and all the girls and boys are now doing fine. Salvador is integrated with the others and is not now ´climbing the walls´ to get out. We have rescued another dog this month who came looking for us, turning up at our gate. He is about a year old and now called Casper. Take a look at him, he is in need of a new home as are all our rescued dogs. You can see them all on our facebook sight.
