JOURNAL
THE Dear Readers,
Welcome to the October 2013 edition of “The Journal”. It’s been quite a month here at the office! We have been busy, busy, busy! As I mentioned last month we are now distributing across the entire region. The benefit of this is twofold. Not only are the ex pats of North West Murcia now getting to read The Journal each month, but it gets me out the office and gives me the chance to spend some time in an absolutely stunning part of Spain. Everyone I met has been so supportive, from the people in the distribution points, to the readers that I have met when on my travels. Thank you all for your feedback. As the magazine continues to grow, it was perhaps optimistic to think that things would go without a hitch. Hopefully most of our readers never noticed, but we made a slight faux pas in the September edition. I would like to apologise to all our readers in Cehegín. We spelled the name of your town as Chegin, and we are really sorry! Thanks to those of you who called and emailed to let me know! Another change that we have been working on is our website address. You can now visit our website at www.thejournal.es. The old website address still works and we will keep them both running side by side indefinitely. The idea is to avoid confusion between old and new readers and advertisers. New readers and advertisers are puzzled why we are called “The Journal” but our web address is www.thecampsoldistrictjournal.com, and our old readers and advertisers are so used to the old address that we didn’t want to change it. Take it from me; trying to rebrand a well established business is no small matter! Also we are pleased to announce that we have been nominated in 2 categories at the 2013 Independent Magazine Publisher awards. We have been nominated for Best Magazine Design, and Best Front Cover. Either award would be nice to win, however the standard from magazines across Europe sets the bar very high. For us, being nominated is enough, and testimony to the hard work that goes into this magazine every month. It wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support of our readers and advertisers, so thank you all for getting us this far. We will let you know the outcome in due course. As our regular readers know I get very excited at this time of year due to what I call “Log Burner” weather. It’s always nice to light the log burner for the first time of the season, but before you do, please make sure that you have had your chimney swept. Using a log burner without a clean chimney can have several outcomes, none of them good and all of them costly. Look out for our article explaining more later in the magazine. Lastly I have had some feedback that the lateral thinking questions were too difficult last month! This month we have made them slightly easier. Don’t forget to send your answers via e-mail to be in with a chance of winning a gift voucher for Just Fabulous on Sector B Camposol. The email address is on the quiz page. That’s all for now folks, Enjoy the October magazine, Robert Rutherford

A CAMPOSOL & DISTRICT INDEPENDENT PARTY (CDIP) –
October 2013 update
The CDIP Planning Group is grateful to The Journal for providing this opportunity to update local residents on the current position with regard to the CDIP political initiative. The Planning Group also feel it is important to make local residents aware of the events leading up to the present situation. The aim of the CDIP initiative is to create its own party list of candidates, who will be committed to represent the interests of Camposol and surrounding district at the next local elections in May 2015. This initiative was mentioned in the CRA Report published in the August edition of The Journal. However, events have moved forward and the creation of the CDIP will proceed independently of the CRA. At this juncture it is prudent to recall events that led the CRA Committee to establish a Political Sub-Committee (PSC). At the 2012 AGM of the CRA the democratic decision was taken by the membership that in future the CRA should adopt a more political stance than had been the case previously. The background for this decision had its origins in the total frustration felt by both the CRA Committee and many local residents about the treatment Camposol and others in the local area
of the UIDM, have been attending meetings of the UIDM Executive Committee. It is also understood that the UIDM executive has promised to allocate two places on its party list Thus the CRA established a Political Sub- for the 2015 local elections. This was based on the provision and inclusion on a new bus Country Club’s experience in dealing route, nothing else! with the current mayor and his party and with previous incumbents of this office. The PSC has consistently advised that this close political co-operation with the The PSC recommendation to the CRA UIDM, or any political party, is unwise Committee was that an independent at this time. The PSC considered that a political party should be formed and this more profitable approach for Camposol was strongly supported. Thereafter, the and the local district would be to wait decision to create a political party called until our own independent councillors the “Camposol and District Party” (CDIP) were elected and then embark on a cowas made known in the public domain. operation with any political party that will also act in Camposol’s best interest. Very soon after this announcement, the CRA was approached by the minority There was a special meeting between UIDM party with a view to participating the PSC and the CRA Committee held in a collaboration agreement with the on the 11th July 2013 to consider this CRA. From the ashes, however, comes hope! There now exists a new CDIP Planning Group. The relevant documentation for the official registration of the CDIP has been prepared and is ready for submission to the Ministerio del Interior, Madrid. Hopefully, in the near future, the Camposol and District Independent Party will become a reality.

At the next local elections, Camposol and district voters will have a clear alternative choice for deciding how their interests can be best served. The CDIP Planning Group considers that, under the current arrangements, up to four of our own councillors would be elected. This will give us a real, strong and influential presence on Mazarron Council. The main focus for our own councillors would be Camposol and its local district, including Mazarron Country Club.

It should be remembered that the Spanish economy is in very poor shape so future resources will continue to be limited for some time to come. It is imperative that we have our own local councillors fighting for a fair share of these resources on behalf of Camposol and local residents. It is doubtful, bearing in mind previous experience, any of the other political parties (PP, PSOE, and even the UIDM) can make a similar claim. Remember, recently the PP even voted against repairing the bridge on Camposol. Once created, the CDIP will aim to benefit ALL Camposol and district residents and we will welcome members from all sections of our local area from whom those who might consider standing for election in 2015 will emerge. Further updates will be published as we approach May 2015. Dr Peter Pitt Chairman CDIP Planning Group

Any modellers out there?
Camposol and District Modellers . After an overheard conversation in a Camposol café, the above two guys found that they have a mutual interest in model railways and decided to put the word out to see if anyone else shared the same interest. Half a dozen people telephoned Tony to register their interest in an informal get together for a chat about model railways. Now two months later our group stands 10 strong. We have had three meetings ,which we try to aim at around the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2pm, as this is an informal group we can move times and dates around to suit the majority. These meeting both took place in TJs on Camposol. At a previous meeting we decided to expand the remit from model railways to general modelling. In the group we have a majority of railway modellers four of whom have or are working on model railway layouts at the moment in several different gauges, inside and outside. We have two people who build model boats in wood (static models from kits) and also one couple who have two super Victorian dolls houses. We know that there are many different branches to the modelling tree, but if you are into modelling give Tony a ring or an e-mail and come along to the next meeting for a friendly chat . Camposol D Sector Community Group’s Summer BBQ.
The evening of Saturday 24th August saw 124 guests both from D Sector and other parts of Mazarron enjoying their evening at The Club House on Camposol. The occasion was the group’s Summer BBQ. 13 tables where arranged on The Club House terrace with its beautiful views of the Golf Course with the mountains in the background. The weather was perfect for dining and dancing outside and the music was provided by Martin Ross, who is a favourite entertainer of our group and was great as usual. The BBQ was cooked by Richard who is now the chef at The Club House and may be remembered from his Restaurant “Ricardo’s” in the Port. Richard cooked up a delicious combination of chicken, burger and sausage which was accompanied with a delicious salad and a jacket potato. The raffle was very well supported with the 15 prizes being beautifully presented by Maureen and Clive Gritt who give invaluable support to the Group. Maureen also provided a prize for each table as an added bonus. Everyone enjoyed the evening which was a great success. Our thanks also go to The Golf Club and their staff who worked so hard for us.

Valencia town charges tourists 10€ to be pelted with tomatoes Every summer, 10,000 residents of the Valencia town of Bunol, joined by thousands of tourists from around the world take to the streets for the world’s largest tomato fight, the Tomatina. Originally the Tomatina began as a food fight between neighbours back in 1945 and has since grown into an international event. But this year one thing has changed. The Tomatina used to be a free for everyone, but like many other cultural events on the Spanish calendar, it has been hit by the recession. This year for the first time visitors have had to pay at least €10 for the privilege of taking part in the celebrations. €750 will buy you a place on one of the trucks that carry the tomatoes into the town enabling you to launch the first attacks!

Apparently the town hall can no longer afford to foot the bill for the truckloads of fresh tomatoes and the cost of police and medical staff needed in case of an emergency. The mayor of Buñol, Joaquín Masmano
Palmer, told a press conference the decision to charge visitors was one that “no one wanted to take” but that the growing popularity of the festival, which last year saw around 40,000 revellers join in, left him with no choice. People came from thousands of miles, he said, “without being able even to touch a tomato,” and that charging would simultaneously keep numbers down and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. “This is the first year we are charging for access to this popular festival due to the need to limit the crowd for safety reasons,” the town hall said in a statement.

Time is up for Ex Pat Fugitives in Spain JUST 10 of the UK’s most wanted and dangerous criminals are still on the run in Spain, following the successful arrest of another fugitive on the Operation Captura list. UK-based Crimestoppers and the Spanish Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) unveiled the campaign in October 2006, and since then have named 65 targeted individuals, two of which were later removed. The most recent arrest, the 53rd of the operation, was that of Darren O’Flaherty who was detained at the start of August in relation to kidnap and robbery offences, and a separate murder charge. The agencies are now renewing their appeal for information as they try to track down the remaining outlaws, and are keen to raising awareness of their campaign in areas across
Spain with a large British expatriate community. Roger Critchell, director of operations at Crimestoppers, said: “The recent arrests we have seen have proven again that the cooperation between UK and Spanish law enforcement, SOCA and the public is essential in this fight against crime. It is thanks to them that we only have ten criminals left on this list.” Anyone with information can pass on information anonymously via the online Giving Information form on the Crimestoppers website, www. crimestoppers.org, or call 900 555 111.

Naked Workouts. The Next Big Gym Craze?
A gym in Spain’s Basque region has
begun offering naked workouts, in order to beat the economic recession. When Merche Laseca, owner of
town of Sopelana, he figured a naturist gym wasn’t a bad idea. “We’re always interested in new activities and “doing sports without clothes is natural and much more comfy argues Maite Vicuna, president of the Basque Naturist Association, but there are skeptics who are less than thrilled with the idea of a nudist gym. They claim clothes are important when working out, as they retain most of the sweat, whereas doing it naked means the swat goes on the machines, the floor and even on the people around you. Despite the Mr Laseca initial optimism, only four naturists showed up at the Easy Gym nude sessions inauguration. Mr. Laseca admits that this was a rather disappointing outcome, but plans to keep the gym clothing free every weekend.
the Easy Gym, in Arrigorriaga, noticed fewer people were attending his gym because of the crisis, he knew he had to come up with something new to keep his business afloat. He did some research and discovered the area was a popular destination for naturists. In fact, two local swimming pools were already offering popular monthly nude swimming sessions, and since he discovered there are at least 12 nudist beached in ¹%VERYTHING S THE SAME EXCEPT THE NAME the Basque region, -ILES "ETTER 7INDOW #LEANING 3ERVICES FORMERLY and a mass !93 0ROFESSIONAL 7INDOW #LEANING 3ERVICES naked run Call Derek Miles 619 877 303 or organized yearly in email milesbettergroup@gmail.com the nearby facebook group Miles Better Water Filters

FAST DEMONSTRATION – AT THE LADIES’ CIRCLE, Puerto de Mazarrón.
On Thursday, 12th September the ‘LADIES CIRCLE’ who meet each week at the PLAYA GRANDE HOTEL in Puerto de Mazarron, were given a Demonstration by FAST (First Aid Support Team) Camposol. Gerry Bradshaw, the President of FAST and Head Trainer, accompanied by Helen Macmillan, Secretary, Responder and Trainer of FAST gave a
Demonstration and Talk on carrying out C.P.R on adults, children and babies, advice on what to do if someone was choking and how to place a person into the recovery position. The main idea of the Demonstration was to show that it was not difficult to carry out emergency first aid and the message was that ‘it is always better to try to do something rather than walk past or stand by and do nothing and to carry out the best you can do at that particular time’. The Ladies were invited to practise on the three sizes of manikins, and shown the difference in carrying out rescue breaths on an adult as against a boy and a baby. To practise on the apparatus for assisting someone choking was also useful. Gerry informed the audience that it is important to remember the signs of a stroke – which can be thought of as FAST! - F for Face, A for Arms, S for Speech and T for Time. The T is very important to remember…….to note when the stroke first started which

Save Money on Funeral Expenses “Buy Today Die Tomorrow However Long You Live” NO this is not a Joke! As with all other goods and services in Spain Funeral Expenses are rising in price annually – So our commitment to You is: *Fixed price Funeral Plan from Day 1 *Price is frozen from the moment you sign *No hidden extras added at time of death *Totally interest free, the price you see is the price you pay *VAT/IVA exempt We are a fully legal Spanish SL Company and we know that other Companies in the market place cannot commit to the above, so before you make a decision consider this: Do not believe all you see and hear. Check out the facts before committing to something you may later regret, look at the small print for the hidden payments/extras above the basic cost of a funeral plan, what’s the interest rate being charged for the pleasure of paying by instalments? Wine of the Month
by Victoria Moore
Recently an old friend asked me what would be the perfect wine to accompany her favourite dish of Pizza. Of course there are many Italian wines that I could have advised her of, however with so many quality and value wine to choose from here in Spain, I wouldn’t dare. One of my favourite wine here in Spain,

a half-century-old Spanish winery that produces a full range of wines. With a name that’s a mouthful in itself, Campo Viejo Rioja Temranillio is a medium-bodied red wine that’s aged in oak barrels for 12 months before being bottled, after which it’s aged for several more months before being sold. My friend invited me over for pizza and I arrived armed with a bottle. The consensus was that this wine made a good pizza partner. It had some fruitiness, balanced by tannic notes, a faint spiciness, and background oakiness. And it was generally agreed that this was a versatile wine. It made a good companion for both the tomato sauce and the cheese on our pizza, so it would be a natural for other tomato- and cheesebased dishes, with a cheese sampler, or with both red and white meats. At about 5€ a bottle, this would make a nice addition to your wine rack, or a gift for your dinner host.

2013 Poppy appeal MazarrĂłn district The Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal will be in full flow from 14th October to 14th November 2013. During that period many bars, restaurants and shops in the area will have collections boxes, red poppies and a selection of wrist-bands, badges and crosses. The Ex Servicemens Association of Mazarron District will shortly be in contact with businesses to drum up support for this worthwhile appeal. In addition this year there are charity calendars on sale. ‘Saralaras Remembers 2014’ is based on the lines of the calendar girls but with a 1940’s and wartime theme, incorporating slogans from that era. As a child I was put off Caravanning for life. Every school holiday Mum would pack the kitchen sink, while dad hooked the caravan up to the tow bar, ready to take my sisters and I off on another of our “Adventures”. Not wishing to give away my true age, let’s just say that this was in an era before air-con came as standard on most cars and there were no in car DVD players or handheld game consoles. I am scarred by the memories of frequently being stuck in motorway traffic jams on hot summer days, hot, bored, being bullied by my little sister and forced by my parents to play eyespy. Since then I swore I would never go on another caravanning holiday. Unless I was going in this...
The event raised a fantastic 4100.00€ and with the promise of more money to come in the total could reach 4500.00€ MABS Mazarron would like to thank everyone who took part in the event especially:Premier Pension Solutions – major Sponsors TAM Assett Management (UK) Citreön Al Mazarron HIFX Endeavor Fund (New Zealand) Dario Pinturas Moto´s Raul Won the Lottery? comes complete with a colossal master bedroom, 40-inch TV, on-board bar, fireplace and even its own rooftop terrace. The seating area has multi configurations and can be used as a lounge or boardroom. The seats are made using the owner’s choice of fabrics or leather. Apparently Alcantara over Italian leather is one of the most popular choices of the wealthy new owners. But the most impressive piece of luxury is the ‘Sky Lounge’ - at the press of a button the 40ft home transforms into a personal retreat with pop up cocktail bar, under floor heating and extravagant marble lighting. The makers claim that the vehicle has been a hit among oil-rich Arab Sheikhs - the state-of-the-art homes even wash themselves after a day’s driving through the Middle Eastern desert. This private jet on wheels is designed to cater for businessmen on the road, wealthy families on their travels or global superstars on tour, which means that sadly it might look a bit out of place at Skegness caravan park. For those of you that don’t fancy life on the road, no matter how luxurious, then fear not. In the basement you will find a home Spa with indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, and also a double garage. Outside on the ample decking you will find an infiniti pool and gardens by the sea. On a Budget? For those of you that feel like splashing out, but might struggle to get your hands on 2 million in cash, then don’t worry. When you go and speak to the bank manager tell him that this is what you are looking for: 2,000,000€ minus a 10% deposit of 200,000€ means a mortgage of 1,800,000€ over 25 years with an interest rate of 7.5% then this means 300 easy payments of 13,301.84€.

If you had a choice of any of the 3 which one would you choose? Yes, me too. Allan Doyle

Technology Are you prone to losing or misplacing your keys or your purse/wallet or even your kids? (Ok, we are joking about the kids) If the answer is yes then you will love the new Apple icon-like Tile, this little matchbook-sized Bluetooth Low Energy device can be attached to any product of your choice like those mentioned above and much more no matter how big or small, and with an accompanying iOS app you can locate the product. The Tile is one of the best little devices we have seen that not only looks great, but it is highly practical when using. Similar devices only have a range of around 100 feet but the Tile goes way beyond that thanks to Bluetooth connection via iPhones running the Tile app to show a wider net search. You can pre order yours for around 14€ at: www.thetileapp.com
New Device to Record Your Life A new device promises to record your entire life - and save any 60 second slot for playback. The Kapture, worn on the wrist like a watch, is a tiny recorder on a loop which continually overwrites itself. This means that if anyone says anything that you wish you could keep for posterity, you simply tap the device. The last minute of conversation or sounds are then sent to a smartphone app for storage where the extract can be left or edited down. From there is can be stored or passed on to friends. The device was invented by friends Mike Sarrow and Matthew Dooley based in Cincinnati. They said possible uses could include saving the reaction of a child experiencing something for the first time. It could also be used to record the unexpected interactions of daily life or a humorous anecdote from your family reunion. ‘With this technology, you can preserve and share real-time memories in a completely new way,’ said Mr Sarrow. The wristband features a retro-inspired sound grill for its built-in microphone. Both the bands and coloured grills are interchangeable, and are offered initially in black, white, seafoam, hard yellow, and hot orange. A company spokesman said: ‘For the first time, an organic experience can be shared socially through the medium of
page 26
sound. ‘With no distracting screen, Kapture promotes an acute awareness of one’s surroundings, and empowers users to save interactions without leaving or disrupting the flow of conversation.
ICpooch. Genius or just plain crazy? Have you ever worried about your dog
‘Kapture is always running, ready to preserve the fleeting moments of our lives that pass too quickly. ‘Instead of trying to retell an experience, Kapture allows you, as the creator, to share your story exactly as it happened.’ Snippets of memorable conversation are immediately downloaded via Bluetooth onto a user’s smartphone with one touch of the wristband. The audio can then be edited, enhanced, tagged, and shared via the Kapture mobile app to the user’s social media platform of choice. The device continuously overwrites itself, saving audio only when tapped, allowing the user to save just the moments they wish to remember. Men be warned. You will never win an argument again. Ever.

getting lonely when you pop out to the shops or go out to a restaurant for the evening? If so then this gadget could be the answer to you all your worries. ICPooch is an internet enabled device that allows that allows dog owners to video chat with their dogs via their Smartphone or iPad. Via the in built motor the owner can then dispense a treat for beloved pooch! Amazing, right? Well what’s even more amazing is that this is the invention of 15 year old Brooke Martin from Washington, USA. The device acts like a computer, using a Raspberry Pi motherboard and wifi module to connect to the internet. The computer is attached to a motor which is activated when the owner of the device gives it the ‘drop treat’ command from a remote computing device.
owners. As well as selling the device, iCPooch said it also plans to sell its own dog treats. To us it sounds like a good idea, but we would be a bit worried in our favourite restaurant or in the frozen food isle of Consum, enthusiastically talking “Doggy Speak” into our phone handsets. “Whosagoodboythen? Sitforyoubiscuits! Givepaw! Givepaw” Goodboy!”

Software for the system is also run in an online cloud, allowing pet owners to log in to a personal account. According to the iCPooch team, an estimated 13 million dogs suffer from separation anxiety, as well as many pet
that concerns most of us, some individuals are worried that there’s an inherent flaw in the upcoming iPhone 5S’s fingerprint authentication system: a thief could potentially sever your finger and use the appendage to unlock the device. Once inside, they could access protected third party apps and potentially break into one’s bank account. After all, this wouldn’t be the first time that something like this has happened. Years ago, a man lost his finger to a gang of Malaysian car thieves who were trying to start his fingerprint-secured Mercedes S-class sedan. A secondary concern is that if fingerprint validation becomes the industry standard, then once yours is stolen, there’s nothing you can really do about it. At least with a passcode, you can just make a new one
2013
after it’s been compromised; an option that clearly doesn’t exist with personal body parts. Despite these concerns, Apple has informed users that their fingers are safe. Unlike traditional scanners which work by optics alone, the iPhone 5S will use radio frequency scanners to probe beneath the layer of dead skin that’s on the outside. Long story short, your finger must be “alive” for your phone to be unlocked; a stand-alone appendage or an accurate plastic model won’t do the trick. Sebastien Taveau, chief technology officer at fingerprint sensor provider Validity Sensors, explaned: “The technology is built in a way that the image has to be taken from a live finger. No one in biometrics wants to talk about cut fingers and dead bodies, but at the end of the day we are still asked to remove the fears of consumers and make sure they understand that a severed finger will not work.” Of course, there are several other ways that a thief could break into an iPhone. The most obvious method would involve forcing someone to unlock the smartphone themselves, potentially using a gun as an effective motivational tool.

Just how Spanglished are you? Do your food cupboards still contain mostly Heinz baked beans, or is there a dirty big snake of coiled chorizo lurking in there next to the pimenton and sunflower seeds, waiting to strike?
Personally, I have a large bag of sunflower seeds sitting next to the Ninja mini chopper, (a mean machine if ever there was one) the cat’s bag (passport, catnip, feliway etc) in that weirdly small corner cupboard where the ‘undead’ items go to hide. You know the ones I mean,-rarely used, and may come in handy one day items such as fondue sets and partially used batteries. I call ours the Michael Macintyre Module. He has a man drawer, I have a module. I’m posh, see. I have no idea what to do with the sunflower seeds as they still wear their shells and it seems like a huge effort to sit and do whatever it takes to get them out. I’m not using my teeth, either. When cherries were bountiful, I had a Stepford Wives moment and sat on the terrace with a kilo of them and a knife, wearing a sunhat and a maxi dress. It looked
page 28
like I’d committed murder by the end, hands stained red with a glazed look of boredom, but at least I had a supply of cherry ice cream for the freezer. Now, fifteen tins of Laverbread aside (am halfway through this year’s supply, less one sympathy tin donated (nay, prised from my grip) to a Welsh Lady in Need, my cupboards do indeed contain two types of pimenton, saffron, plus spices. Cookery books litter all available spaces, -a couple have actually been used. Rick Stein’s Spain for instance, and a tapas bible. The beautifully covered paella book, in a fancy mesh, has had its pages turned a few times, but the basic recipe still seems to be the order of the day. A large paella burner sits in the garden but so does a B&Q BBQ imported and fitted with a spit for Consum’s ready marinated chicken. There’s usually a blister pack of what might be octopus and squid mix, normally a lunchtime snack, and those little green peppers for flash frying sit alongside. But the most Spanglished item in our household must surely be the shopping trolley. Bought in Malaga Ikea at the beginning of the summer, this high gloss navy and white polka dot beauty lounges in the boot of the car like a bathing belle from that Bobby Darin song. Always at the ready, this beautiful beast of burden has become my new best friend. No more dents in the palms of hands, sagging shoulders and soaring tempers. As light as a feather it follows me around the outdoor markets, gobbling up mounds of heavy fruit and veg and sitting calmly alongside me at pavement cafes while a post expedition tapas and coffee ensues.

Important Safety Information about using your Log Burner this year. The autumn is finally here bringing with it the cooler days and nights. Many of us therefore, will be getting ready to light our log burners for the first time of the season. Before enjoying the warmth of your log burner, there are some important facts to consider. Burning wood, no matter how you do it, releases pollutants. There is no avoiding this but, how you deal with the associated problems can make a huge difference. One of the main dangers of wood burning is the excessive build up of creosote in chimney pipes. Creosote is a gummy, foul smelling, corrosive and extremely combustible substance that, if no precautions are taken, will coat the insides of everything it passes through. It is formed when volatile gases given off in the burning process combine and condense on their way out of the chimney. The gases leave the burning wood with the smoke. If the smoke is cooled below 250 degrees F, the gases liquefy, combine, and solidify, forming creosote. Creosote takes several forms, all bad. As a liquid, it can run down the insides of pipes and chimneys, oozing out of any openings. It can form a hard layer coating the insides of pipes and chimney liners. It can form into a fluffy substance that plugs pipes and breaks off and falls down, filling low spots in piping. It is the cause of most
2013
chimney fires and the reason chimneys and pipes have to be cleaned and inspected periodically. Most of us that have modern day log burners will have what is known as an “Airtight” stove. There is a seal around the door, and the burn is then controlled by using vents which control the amount of air entering the log burner. Generally most people during the cold weather stack the log burner full before going to bed and then “Choke” the air. This keeps the house lovely and warm all night. The problem is that an air starved, slow burn, produces relatively cool temperatures ideal for creosote formation. People get up in the morning to a warm house, but may not realize they have also contributed to the build up of creosote Creosote build up is pretty sneaky. You may not notice it at first but it tends to feed on itself. As it builds up, it restricts the flow in the chimney and/or stove pipes. This slows the smoke on its way out, allowing more time for it to cool and for the creosote to condense and deposit itself thus further restricting the flow. As with all problems, prevention is better than the cure. That is why it is recommended to have your chimney professionally swept in order to remove all creosote and debris, eliminating the risk of a chimney fire which can be dangerous and costly. Tony the Chimney Sweep provides a quick, clean and hassle free service in order to give you peace of mind when

Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group - Have we got news for you!!!!! Just when I thought it was safe to take a breather, our members bring forth another clutch of ideas, plans and projects for the Group to take on. Not that I’m complaining....(well, not much). Here are just some of the ideas and initiatives that have kept us busy over the past few weeks:- New Group Steering Committee (GSC). The GSC has already met, surveyed the communual spaces on Camposol - Los Palacios , and commenced work on the projects submitted. You may already be enjoying one of these initiatives close to YOUR villa!!!! The Casita del Libros - As always, Pauline and the Team keep the community occupied with reading matter and a friendly chat swapping useful information. You have heard the phrase “the woman behind the man”, but it is definitely a reverse situation when setting up and putting away the 100’s of books each Friday morning. There is a team of “men behind the woman”. Don’t worry though, Pauline has them firmly under control.
These very valuable resources must be used wisely and accounted for - keeping track of it all is no mean task. Besides our Members who get on with the “nitty gritty” side of things (by that I mean actual gardening) we have a very lively Vice Chairman in the shape of Harry, who is just brimming with events ideas. We are actively looking for additional volunteers to join our Events Team so that we can keep up with Harry and the great ideas that the rest of the Team produce. Dare I mention the bucket collections? Thanks to those who give
All this activity has to be funded and accounted for. Our Treasurer Beryl is being kept extremely busy due to the very generous donations which the community are kind enough to make.

Many thanks once again to all those who give us help and support. Back to the “nitty gritty” side of things you will see in the before & after photos an example of how much better Los Palacios can look after a visit from one of our Teams. Let us know if you would like to be part of the improvements. Do you have time on your hands and would like to help setting up the Casita del Libros on Friday mornings, or lend a hand with our events organisation? The Chairman and I would like to hear from you. Local Yoga teacher Lisa has a studio in Isla Plana and has classes for all abilities. Yoga Therapy – Arthritis As the weather becomes cooler and damper we all start to notice those seasonal aches and pains that accompany the damp weather, or that accompany the day before it is going to rain. Our joints and bones are so in tune with the weather! This month I have included some yoga therapy techniques to start you on the road to health ‌ physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The Problem Arthritis (from Greek arthro – joint + itis – inflammation. Plural arthritides) is a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body (wikipedia.org). A common complaint and one which I come across a lot in my work, is arthritis. - referring to a number of inflammatory conditions that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling, usually around the joints. For example: osteoarthritis (being the most common), rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. The Solution Yoga Arm, wrist & finger strengtheners: (inhale) claw-like shape with the fingers and tense the arms, hold three breaths and release (exhale). Repeat three times. Affirmation: I embrace life (inhaling) and let go of past hurts (exhaling) Shoulder Lifts: (inhale) raise the shoulders up, hold three breaths and then release (exhale).
Repeat three times. Affirmation: I forgive myself and my burdens are lifted. Foot & Leg Strengtheners: raise up on the balls of the feet (inhale) hold for three breaths, then lower (exhale); repeat up to 10 times. Affirmation: I move upwards and onwards with love. Spinal Twists: Sitting with legs apart, (inhale) lengthen the spine and then (exhale) twist gently round. Hold three breaths and then release (on the exhale). Repeat three times each side. Affirmation: I forgive and release all my fear.
you right now? The ´Symptom` arthritis is shouting at you to let it go. Deeper work with yoga will help you release whatever it is you are holding onto (and sometimes we do not necessarily need to know exactly what it is). lisa@yogawithlisa.es (0034) 626 960 354 www.yogawithlisa.es

Pranayama Sitting on the floor or chair, take a deep breath in through your nose slowly and then curl forwards and blow out through your mouth quickly forcing the air out. Repeat three to five times. Would you believe that the avocado is considered by many nutritional experts to be a perfect food? It’s considered by many to be a Superfood!. Although avocados are heavy in calories, those are nutrient dense calories. And the fats are heart healthy monounsaturated fats and omega-3. Besides actually being healthy, there are many ways to enjoy avocado, from a few guacamole recipes to mixing into salads and to using it as a meat substitute for sandwiches. Avocado’s health benefits Healthy brain: Dr. Daniel G. Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life considers avocados as one of the top brain-healthy foods that can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s. Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages. (2) Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL. In avocados, the vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is an indication of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters. (3) Pregnancy: Folic acid is commonly recommended for pregnant women to help the fetus develop its brain and other vital organs. But some health experts consider synthetically extracted folic acid a problem. They recommend using natural folate for its folic acid content instead.
2013
Health &Wellbeing Folate also reduces stroke risk, according to a study of people who eat folate rich foods. (4) Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration. (5) Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more than banana, with omega-3 and oleic acid are beneficial toward reducing blood pressure. (6) Blood sugar: Avocado’s monounsaturated fats can prevent or reverse insulin resistance, a source of type 2 diabetes. The high soluble fiber of avocado helps prevent blood sugar spikes. (7) Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is considered the basis of most non-contagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents. (8) Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione. (9) Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients. A study’s participants who ate salads with avocados absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids than those who did not include avocados. Carotenoids include beta carotene and lycopene. Beta carotene is a precursor to
2013
vitamin A, and lycopene is a compound that reduces stroke and prostate cancer risks. (10) Cancer: Avocados can help protect against prostate and breast cancers. We could go on, but based on what you have just read, there is no reason not to eat this delicious superfood. Not only does it taste great, its really, really, good for you. The best avocados that we have found locally have been from FRUTAS IGUAZU in Totana. For their opening times see their advert in the magazine.
DRY EYE SYNDROME Dry eye syndrome, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, its scientific name, is an eye disease caused by eye dryness, which, in turn, is caused by either decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation. It is a common condition but often not well treated. In fact, it has no cure, though there are a number of options for treating the underlying symptoms. CAUSES There are a number of factors that can potentially cause dry eyes, including airconditioner, environmental factors, illness, a medication side-effect, hormonal changes, or ageing. In many instances there is no single identifiable cause, rather a group of factors contributing to its presence. Factors that can cause, or exacerbate, dry eye syndrome include: Normal age-related reduction in the production of tears. Hormonal changes; particularly in the production of the female hormone oestrogen. Medications: antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, benzodiazepines, corticosteroids, non-steroidal antiinflammatories, even aspirin or vitamin supplements could also increase dry eye prevalence. Heavily airconditioned environments. Any situation in which blinking is less likely, e.g., when staring at a computer screen, prolonged reading, driving or watching television. Windy, dusty, smoky, hot or dry weather conditions. Soft contact lenses
that absorb tears. Eye injury/burns. Fans or hair dryers blowing directly onto the face. SYMPTOMS Its symptoms are non-specific and may be mimicked by allergic diseases, such as hay fever. Grittiness, dryness or soreness in both eyes that get worse throught the day. Eye redness Watery eyes, especially after wind exposure. Sticky eyelids upon waking. If the condition is not treated, chronic dry eyes can lead to complications such as scarring of the cornea or conjunctivitis. These complications can then go on to produce more severe symptoms such as photophobiaextreme sensitivity to light; extreme eye redness; eye pain; and blurry vision. TREATMENTS Mild dry eyes are best managed by using lubricants or artificial tears. Although, eye drops will not cure the syndrome can provide temporary relief from symptoms by moisturizing and lubricating the eye. Preservative-free artificial tears are preferred because preservatives can cause further eye irritation. Increasing blinking. Resting the eyes by looking away from computer screens, books or televisions. Protecting eyes from sunny, windy environments by wearing sunglasses. Avoiding prolonged exposure to smoke or air conditioning. Drinking six to eight glasses of water per day to ensure adequate hydration. Wearing glasses instead of contact lenses, or wearing customized lenses which do not absorb tears. More severe instances of dry eyes can be treated after seeking the advice of an ophthalmologist as soon as symptoms are observed. PREVENTION Protect the eyes from the harmful effects of modern technology and taking regular breaks from computer or TV viewing, both of which can stress eyes by inducing a pattern of low blinking rates, a factor in dry eye onset. Amongs the other strategies suggested by experts are, importantly, maintaining clean eyes using a cotton ball and warm water; reducing smoking, using a humidifier- which can help to keep surrounding air moist- and eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. A.D. SUCINA - SPORTING MAZ CAMPOSOL 0-1 On September 15th 2013 was the day. The first official match of Sporting M Camposol. After 10 weeks of preparation with up & downs the players were ready. Despite a few injuries there was a good team on the pitch. The first 10 minutes were a bit nervous for both teams. The game was played with a lot of energy, especially considering the whole game was played in the middle of the pitch. There were almost no chances created. Sucina tried to play long balls and hoped the ball would fall once. While sporting remained calm and stood positioned very good and waited for opportunities to come out. This worked a few times by a strong playing Moha on the left. In the very last minute of the
first half Sporting got a free kick. The captain Juan put the ball down at the far post, where Calum Rowling laid the ball back to the incoming Boudia Tirigou. He remained calm and shot the 0-1 in the goal. In the second half Sucina had to come forward and therefore Sporting got a lot of space. This should have been better played out but both Moha and Abdel could not take advantage of the space that Sucina gave away. The defence of Sporting stood like a rock, they gave nothing away. Captain Juan and the young left back Fran played very strong. Sucina tried to find a gap , but it was impossible today for them. A deserved victory, and in fact already a historic match for the new entrant. With three sixteen and two seventeen year olds in the team there is still much growth in this team. Coach: Jelco Oosterhof, I’m obviously very happy with the three points. But the footbal should be a lot better. We must learn to finish a game. But that takes time. Especially young Scott played very strong in midfield.

Spanish pricefixing probe looks at VW, Renault, others Spain’s competition authority is investigating whether car retailers colluded to fix prices and share information, as automakers suffer falling sales amid Spain’s five-year economic slowdown. The National Competition Commission (CNC) started an investigation into possible price fixing in the sale of brands including Volkswagen, Audi and Toyota. It is also investigating carmakers including Nissan Iberia SA, Renault Espana SA, Ford Espana SL and Chevrolet Espana SA for possible practices including sharing market-sensitive information, the regulator said on its Web site. Spain has been in and out of recession since 2008, when a debtfueled housing and consumer boom collapsed, undermining car sales. In the first eight months of the year new car registrations shrank 4 percent, adding to a decline of 13 percent seen in 2012, even amid government incentive programs for automakers. The probe into the companies for possible information- sharing also includes Toyota Espana SL, Chrysler Espana SL, General Motors Espana SLU, Fiat Group Automobiles Spain SA, Hyundai Motor Espana SLU, Honda Automoviles Espana SA, KIA Motors Iberia SL, Peugeot Citroen Automoviles Espana SA, Volkswagen Audi Espana, and Seat. The investigations may take as long as 18 months, the regulator said.
Spanish car sales drop 18% in August Spanish car sales dropped 18 percent year-on-year to 38,872 in August after rising by almost 15 percent in July, car manufacturers’ association Anfac said today. August’s figures were impacted by a jump in car sales in the same month last year ahead of a 3 percent rise in value-added tax in September and due to calendar effects, Anfac said. The association said a government subsidy scheme for the purchase of new vehicles would mean a probable rise in September. France’s CCFA industry group said today that sales of new cars fell 11 percent last month to 85,565.
This Flying Car Could Soon Be Yours for $279,000 It seems like something out of The Jetsons, but it’s real. Or at least it will be soon. Terrafugia is perhaps just a few regulations and one very powerful battery away from clearing most of the hurdles it needs to create a flying car that consumers in the market for the equivalent of a super luxury sedan could
afford. It’s a dream that Carl Dietrich, the company’s co-founder, CEO and CTO, has been working at steadily since at least 2006. "I think it’s ridiculous we don’t have these things out there, right now," Dietrich said, speaking of the flying cars he’s helping to design. "There is so much potential for an economic benefit to society if we have things like this. There have been a number of studies recently that have quantified the economic impact of traffic congestion ... just for the U.S., I think it was estimated at $87 billion to $125 billion a year. And that’s just comparing it to driving at normal speeds, without traffic." So, that’s part of the reason why Dietrich and Terrafugia want your car to take
Ford said in a statement it always operates strictly within the law and will cooperate with the regulator. Joaquin Torres, a spokesman for Chevrolet, said in a phone interview that competition in the Spanish car market is “very clear”, and the company expects that to be demonstrated by the investigation. Representatives for Seat and Toyota said they had no comment on the probe.

wing, but it’s also been part of his lifelong passion for flight. Even at a young age, Dietrich wondered why small
his Ph.D. at M.I.T., that Dietrich read about new developments at the Federal Aviation Administration — new kinds of pilots’ licenses and a new kind of aircraft certification. These paved the way for Terrafugia. Enter the Transition. With a cruising speed of 100 miles per hour in the air and gas mileage of about 35 to the gallon on the ground, Terrafugia’s first model of flying car exists already. “We’re flying a second-generation prototype, right now,” Dietrich said of the Transition. “But yes, it’s beyond the proof of concept stage.”
aircraft weren’t developing toward a more practical, everyday transportation option. It was in 2004, while he was completing
The Transition is basically a small general-aviation airplane that can fold up its wings with the push of a button. It runs on normal automative gasoline — about 30% less expensive than aviation fuel (its range is about 410 miles plus a 30-minute reserve). Fly the Transition to a small airport, land, and the wings withdraw in less than a minute. Its propeller disengages and its rear-wheel drive turns on. At that point, you’re street legal and ready to roll. At home, the Transition is designed to fit within a single-car garage. “One of the biggest problems that pilots face is that flying little airplanes is a very weather-sensitive activity,” said Dietrich.
“You may fly somewhere, and the weather changes and you’re stuck. You have to make other travel arrangements. It’s not something you can count on. With the Transition, you can count on getting to where you want to go. It may take a little longer, if you have to drive instead of fly, but you still get there, or you get home.” But only if you have a pilot’s license, because this is still considered a plane and not a car or something in between. And the price of a Transition? When it comes to market, it’ll likely cost about $279,000, putting it in the range of consumers who’d buy, say, a super sports car, something of that nature. The next generation from Terrafugia, the follow-up to the Transition, should prove a bit more universally affordable.
Property, Financial and Legal PRESS RELEASE FROM SHIRLEY FISHER LEGAL & FINANCIAL SERVICES
Many people now live in Spain, although they still consider themselves UK citizens and pay their taxes in the UK. However, if a UK expat dies in Spain, their beneficiaries may find themselves embroiled in the Spanish inheritance tax system – regardless of where the deceased paid his tax. Shirley Ann Fisher, a UK Lawyer, working in both the UK and Spain explains more The PAIN IN SPAIN comes mainly through inheritance tax When times were good – and they were once – many people bought a retirement home abroad, often in Spain or southern France. There were dreams of taking early retirement in a warm climate with endless golf and no grey rainy days. UK pensions would hold up well and altogether life was going to be good.

believed. Most people here are vaguely aware that in the UK there is no Inheritance Tax between husband and wife. This is not the case in Spain. In Spainthe tax is a true “inheritance” tax and it is levied on the beneficiary, not the estate. It is calculated by taking into account, firstly the value of the assets, and secondly, the closeness of the relationship of the beneficiary to the deceased. But even if the Spanish revenue can’t get you, HMRC in the UK could have a try. If you are not “domiciled” in Spain then your worldwide assets may be liable to tax in the UK. There is a double taxation treaty in force between the UK and Spain – and an update is in the pipeline – but it does not deal with Inheritance Tax (called ISD in Spain). The Spanish tax authorities, like those in the UK, being in dire need of revenue, are keen to find ways to increase their tax take, and as a result are looking very carefully at some of the arrangements accepted and recommended until now. The Eurozone crisis hasn’t helped, either. In Spain, the role of Executor does not have the importance it holds in the
UK, as in Spanish eyes he doesn’t exist from the tax perspective. In the UK the executor gets the tax bill, and the heir doesn’t get the property until the tax is paid. So if you do own a property in Spain it is essential to make sure that your arrangements there are as tax efficient as possible, and when making or updating your will in the UK, that you make sure your English adviser is fully aware of the Spanish property, its value, the people who will inherit it and their legal residence. Banking with Benefits Currencies Direct & la Caixa Currencies Direct are the only foreign exchange provider to have created a national agreement with a Spanish bank. Their partnership with “la Caixa”, Spain’s leading savings bank came
about in response to the needs of their customers. Andrew Brown, Regional Sales Manager for Currencies Direct and based in Mojacar explains: “many of our clients asked us why banking in Spain was so expensive, particularly when clients were repatriating funds from selling their properties in Spain. Previously no matter what we saved them on their foreign exchange transactions they still had to pay commission when depositing a Spanish banker’s draft into their own bank account and the fees to send Euros to the Currencies Direct Euro client bank account could be exorbitant.” Currencies Direct approached “la Caixa” with a wish list for their clients and an exceptional agreement has been established which gives clients all the benefits they have been looking for from a Spanish bank. Thus the commission free bank account was created. There is zero commission when depositing Spanish bankers Drafts and no fees whatsoever to transfer funds from the UK to Spain and the reverse when using
Property, Financial and Legal a Currencies Direct “la Caixa” account. The Currencies Direct “la Caixa” bank account has many more benefits on reducing banking costs, for example for raising Spanish Bankers draft when purchasing property in Spain along with debit and credit cards. “We’ve arranged for clients to have access to online banking in English which is another plus point for our clients,” says Andrew Brown, “and what’s more, any transfers are instant. PALS EVENTS 2013
Something a bit different this month. This is an excerpt from a ‘thank you’ comment left on Andrea’s Animal Rescue’s Facebook wall from a lady called Sam Groves who came over from UK for ONE day just to meet Andrea and the gang!! You can read the whole ‘comment’ on our website or Facebook page. “Wow!! Where do I start? Andrea picked me up from Murcia airport at 10.15 yesterday morning, and a day of non-stop talking and laughter started, with some sad times thrown in as well. We talked so much that we got lost on our way to her first Andrea’s charity shop in Fuente Alamo to feed the 4 stray cats she feeds on a daily basis, even though the shop was shut yesterday. These cats rely on Andrea and she has been successful in neutering 2 already with the others getting friendlier each day. Then it was onwards to her beautiful home, in the pouring rain to meet Pedro and his canine friends. Kev, Andrea’s husband opened the gate and I was greeted by the happiest group of dogs. So much excitement and everyone wanting to Sam & Pedro say hello, that by the time I reached the back door I was covered in dog footprints from the rain! Amongst this group of friendly dogs, was the little boy himself who Andrea picked up and handed to me. Pedro is so tiny and quiet, and cuddled in, that this first cuddle made my eyes fill with tears. I was surrounded as I cuddled him, by all these other happy, sociable, well-looking dogs saying, “Cuddle me next!” For such a large pack of dogs, they all mix, play and interact in the most amazing way. We then handed out all the toys I had brought them over from the UK and it was like Christmas. So funny to see them all gathered around me and Andrea deciding who would like what toy with a bit of swapping going around. Mr Freckles wanted most of them, he is so funny, such a terrier and far smaller and cuter in real life. If I ever felt my ankles or laces being nibbled at, I knew it was him. Munchkin then came out and she looks amazing, so Sam & the gang bright and still a bit sore but doing so well despite not always weight bearing on one of her legs. She is a little doll and was so happy with her toy doughnut. I can’t explain how good it was to see these dogs, all in the kitchen and some outside taking the toys, no fights, just very happy and content. Even little, blind Chica who relies on the beautiful and serene galga Lily, lined several up toys up in her bed. We then took Pedro with us in the van and went to Andrea’s new charity shop in Mazzaron. It is huge and here I met the lovely Clare Roberts, and 2 volunteers running the shop. Andrea then took an urgent phone call about a large pup, abandoned on the streets, found by some German youngsters. We dashed off in the van to see 5 people stood on the pavement near a main road, several feet from a large white pup, who was either aggressive or terrified. It was the second Andrea slipped a lead over his head, he tried to pull away and yelped out as if he was going to be hit, and she had him. This poor pup trembled and shook, awaiting a beating, whilst we checked him over. It became apparent, that he has had his ears and tail hacked off, was anaemic, covered in ticks and very thin. He looked like a polar bear cub, given up already on life and only about 3/4 months old. Andrea scooped him up, put him in the van and the Germans were given her details as they would like to try to arrange to rehome him in 2/3 months when he is better. I then had to break the news to Kev, Andrea’s husband, on the phone, that we had found another! He started getting things ready for the pup as we drove back home where Pedro who was on my lap, felt car sick and then proceeded to be sick over me and the handbrake!! He felt better and we were in hysterical laughter as he went back to sleep, as we were covered in his breakfast and still had to drive 20 minutes home in the humid rain! Got back to Andrea’s and the pup was immediately Frontlined and put in a kennel and run for a couple of days before being introduced to the others. He was so scared, didnt want to come up to you and yet needed some love. Whilst he settled we went back into the house for yet more cuddles,a coffee and met Andy, Andrea’s fantastic transport guy who will be bring Pedro to me in October. A real dog lover who treats them as his own…….” Read more on www.andreasanimalrescues.com or our facebook page!
