JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to another action packed, fun filled edition of the No1 magazine on the Costa Calida! So here we are in October. (Again) Sometimes I don’t know where the time goes! But the autumn has finally arrived and it’s almost time to get your chimney swept in time for the first lighting of your log burner! Having your chimney swept every year is very important for a number of reasons. This month, Tony the Chimney Sweep explains why. The month of October always signals the home stretch of the year, and the run down to Christmas! I always think that we are quite lucky here, as in UK the Xmas light have been up on the high street since September! Nonetheless, the festive time of the year will soon be upon us! If you plan on eating Christmas dinner out this year, then check out the restaurant menus later in the magazine, and don’t forget to book early! As we get older we become more focused on our health, and are constantly advised that we should stay fit and active. This is why last month we published a special offer in conjunction with MOVE Gym in Totana, offering our readers a free day out to visit, and enjoy the facilities. The day was a huge success, with some fantastic feedback and it was wonderful to see so many of our readers showing commitment to their health and wellbeing. If you missed out last month, then fear not as this month MOVE have ANOTHER special offer for our readers! If that is not enough they are also running a competition to win free memberships, with fantastic MOVE T-shirts as runner up prizes! The Camposol Medieval Fiesta was a great success this year, so be sure to check out the report of events along with some great photos! Once again we take our hats off to all those involved in the organisation of the Fiesta, and are eagerly anticipating the 2016 fiesta which promises to be even better! See you in November, Robert Rutherford

220 people claim ownership of lost lottery ticket worth €4.7 million

This is the story of someone who was lucky yet unfortunate at the same time. It is also the story of someone else who feels absolutely terrible about the prize money he is now likely to come into. And finally it is the story of 220 individuals who are hoping to become multimillionaires overnight – either because they feel they are legitimately entitled to the money, or because they feel it’s at least worth a try.

hopes up. After September 25, another three months will go by before A Coruña issues an administrative resolution. Even then, there are also legal suits filed by people who are quite certain they lost their ticket, and whose cases will have to conclude before any decision becomes final. These individuals are asking for more serious evidence than just a physical description of the ticket, such as a review of camera footage, fingerprint checks or even DNA testing

Iran hopes to export gas to EU through Spain

In the last week of June 2012, the luckyyet-unfortunate person bought a ticket for the Primitiva lottery at an outlet inside a shopping center in A Coruña, selecting the numbers 10, 17, 24, 37, 40 and 43.

Iran hopes to bring its gas to the EU by shipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Spain, Iran’s oil minister was quoted as saying on Monday at a news conference with his Spanish counterpart in Tehran.

But on the day the winning numbers were announced, this person did not pay attention. And when they showed up at a different outlet to make another lottery punt, they lost the receipt for the winning ticket, which was worth €4.7 million. But the receipt did not disappear. It was found by the owner of the second lottery outlet, also located in A Coruña, on San Agustín square. This man, who stands to keep the fortune if the rightful owner is not found, feels awful about it. Manuel Reija said it never once occurred to him to keep quiet and just cash the prize. After he ran it through the machine and realized that all six numbers were correct, he rushed to inform the authorities. But 14 months have now elapsed after an announcement was published in the official provincial gazette. The message was purposely discreet, but there was an inevitable avalanche of opportunity seekers. To date, 220 people have claimed the prize, the last 30 this week alone. September 25 was the deadline to file a claim to the money.

Iran has no ability to freeze its gas into LNG for tanker exports beyond the reach of pipelines, after several projects stalled due to Western sanctions that forced foreign companies to pull out of Iran. Experts reckon it will take around two years for that to happen, if partners are found.

If nobody is able to prove ownership, the State Lottery and Betting Society (SELAE) will award the €4,722,337 to the lottery dealer who found it. But Reija is so upset about not finding the true owner that he will no longer talk to the press. Politely, he says in a breaking voice over the telephone that “this is very awkward for me, the issue has completely overwhelmed me; to me, customers are the most important thing.” Meanwhile, the winning ticket sits inside a safe awaiting its new owner. Applications are being sent to A Coruña City Hall along with a description of the way the ticket presumably looked when it was lost – any scratches, pencil notes, whether it was folded or not, anything that might prove that applicants physically saw the piece of paper. Many of the claims have already been rejected, but other people still have their

The EU hopes to import gas from Iran, which has some of the world’s largest reserves, to reduce its dependence on Russia. But even after sanctions are lifted, the lack of export infrastructure will delay plans. The most feasible route for Iranian gas to Europe would be via Turkey, already a customer, although the existing TabrizAnkara pipeline would not be big enough for major exports. Iran has long lobbied to build a designated pipeline that would connect its huge South Pars gas field with European customers - the so-called Persian Pipeline.

Wanted: Family with two kids to save village school in eastern Spain

“Talks between Iran and Spain on this topic will continue,” Bijan Zanganeh said, after meeting Spain’s Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism Jose Manuel Soria, the Iranian oil ministry’s news agency Shana reported. Shana quoted Soria, part of a Spanish delegation to Tehran, as saying his country could “act as a channel for Iran’s gas exports to Europe”. He did not elaborate and the ministry in Madrid declined to confirm the comment.

has already lost out on lucrative LNG exports in Asia, where customers pay the highest prices, to Gulf rival Qatar, so Tehran has to look to Europe.

The school bell could ring for the last time for students and teachers in the tiny Valencian town of Bufali - unless they get some new neighbours. A school in the small Valencia town of Bufali looks set to close due to the low number of students in attendance. With a population of just 150, the school has just 4 students in attendance. In order to keep the school open, the town has applied to find a family to move to the town with at least 2 school ages children. In exchange for moving house, the town hall said it will offer the family a house with a rent of €200 and a permanent job at a waste collection company paying €15,000 annually.

Dozens of families from around Spain There are several problems with have already contacted the town about the importing Iranian LNG into Spain. Sanctions on Iran may be lifted in 2016 under the terms of a nuclear deal struck in July, but it will take years for Iran to Roca & Junkers Service Engineers start exporting LNG.

Spanish national police celebrates its first gay wedding on the force

Chema and Jonathan are partners in life and in love, having met while serving in Spain’s Policia Nacional, the pair have been together for five years and on Saturday became the first same sex police officers to marry in Spain. Although Spain was a pioneer when it came to gay rights, becoming only the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005, Chema and Jonathan are the first policemen to get married in Spain. Chema, from Jerez and Jonathan, from Algeciras, got married in full dress uniform on Saturday in the grand surroundings of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera. While the couple might be the first gay pair to marry, they are certainly not the only gay policemen in Spain’s force: “We are not the first gays in the police, we have lots of gay friends in the force,” Said Chema. He added that he hoped their wedding would help to achieve “normalization”. “If it helps someone who is being bullied in school for their sexual orientation to see it as something normal, then that’s great. It’s not something that should be hidden just because you belong to a particular institution,” he added. Many Spaniards took to social media

to congratulate the pair on their marriage.”Congratulations Chema and Jonathan, I wish them the utmost happiness. Congratulations also to the police and to all of Spain,” wrote Jaume d’Urgell on Twitter. And the pair will not be rushing back to patrolling the streets of Spain; they are heading straight off on their honeymoon, a coast to coast trip through the United States, from Seattle to San Diego.

ministers on September 14. Fernández stated on that Spain will not set limits or create hurdles to the admission of as many asylum seekers as the European Commission considers necessary. But the minister added that he wants to keep tabs on who is entering the country for reasons of national security. At the Paris conference, Fernández said that those future transfers of new refugees should follow “a common procedure” throughout all the member states.

Spain fears jihadists may enter country alongside asylum seekers

The Spanish embassy in Turkey has alerted authorities to the theft of 1,452 Syrian passports from offices in the provinces of Rakka and Deir ez Zur. The police suspect the documents may have been sold on the black market at a price of around $2,500 each. After noting that European countries have yet to build “hotspots,” or migrant reception centers, Fernández admitted that “reality moves faster than our response capacity.” Spain has asked for a €7-million credit line to beef up the agency that handles asylum claims, which is already overwhelmed by the number of applications.

Radical militant group Islamic State (ISIS) is planning to use refugee flows to “infiltrate” Europe, according to Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernández. As such, Spain is on alert to “take the appropriate measures” if fears are confirmed that jihadist terrorists could slip into the country posing as asylum seekers, he explained. Speaking at an international conference on violence against minorities in the Middle East, Fernández explained that Spanish authorities are concerned following the theft of 1,452 blank passports in Turkey. Brussels is asking Spain to take in 15,000 refugees fleeing conflict areas, particularly Syria. But PM Mariano Rajoy is yet to confirm exactly how many the country will take in, claiming it is necessary to wait until after a meeting of European

Spanish anti-terrorist agencies have detected significant jihadist recruitment activities in recent years, and have broken up several rings that were trying to send individuals to the Middle East to fight for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Authorities are particularly concerned about combatants who make their way back to Spain, because of their training in combat and explosives.

Spanish aristocrat welcomes Syrian refugee families to live in his palace

An aristocrat from one of Spain’s wealthiest families has thrown open the doors of his estate to welcome two refugee families after they fled war-torn Syria.

The youngest son of the late Duchess of Alba, an eccentric aristocrat and Spain’s richest and most titled noble when she died last November, has come clean about the extent of his philanthropic deeds. Cayetano Martinez de Irujo y Fitz-James Stuart, the 4th Duke of Arjona and 13th Count of Salvatierra has revealed that his family estate near Seville has, for the last 18 months, been home to two families from Syria. The Duke has said that he was stirred into action after reading about the plight of Salam, an urologist who speaks five languages who was living on the streets of Spain with his family. “I saw this headline that said ‘We would prefer to go back to dying amid bombs than to keep living in the street’. I read the report and I said ‘I have to do something’,” the Duke said in the televised interview. “I always do things and don’t talk about them,” he added. “But in this moment I feel so sensitive about this, so angry, so helpless in the face of what is happening that of course I agreed to speak.” Cayetano Martínez said he was moved by Salam’s story of how his practice was bombed and many of the patients were killed. Salam said after he gave an interview about his story to a newspaper, he received a surprising phone call. “We got a call that there was someone very important who wanted to see us,” Salam said. “With the help of Don Cayetano, we now have a very good future,” Cayetano Martínez is one of six children of the Duchess of Alba, one of Spain’s most loved characters and the world’s most titled aristocrat when she died last November. News of the Duke’s generosity comes as Spain is facing pressure by the EU to take in thousands more refugees as Spanish leaders have continued to rebuke previous proposals. The European Commission is set to ask Spain to take in 15,000 people after the country previously said it would take just 2,749 and insists that it lacks the necessary resources.

But local leaders and residents have stepped up in recent weeks to offer their own support to refugees in contrast to the central government. A Barcelonalaunched initiative aims to unite cities across the country in a network where residents can volunteer to house refugees. Dozens of cities have jumped on board with the planned network and hundreds have contacted local officials saying they want to offer up their homes.

Tight poll points to political struggle over Catalan independence The political struggle over Catalan independence from Spain looks set to intensify after an official opinion poll on Thursday showed separatist parties on track to achieve the slimmest of majorities

in a regional election on September 27th. Catalan President Artur Mas has portrayed the vote as a proxy vote on independence for the wealthy northeastern region after the Madrid government went to court last year to block a referendum on Catalonia breaking away from Spain. But a poll of 3,000 Spanish voters by the state-run Sociological Research Centre (CIS) showed Mas’s hopes for a resounding endorsement for a unilateral declaration of independence to be under threat. Mas has said that a separatist majority of at least 68 seats in the 135-member Catalan parliament is the minimum needed to launch a “road map” to secession within 18 months. The CIS poll showed separatist parties, including the main pro-independence movement Junts pel Si and the more radical, left-wing CUP, achieving a combined vote of around 44 percent and 68-69 seats - the narrowest possible majority. If the poll results were confirmed on Election Day, it would give ammunition to opponents of independence - as

2015

they may well argue that the separatist parties would lack a mandate sufficient to push ahead with an independence campaign. Falling short of a majority in the Catalan parliament would be a severe blow to the separatist cause. The two parties that comprise the Junts pel Si movement are expected to win 60-61 seats in the Sept. 27 election, the survey found, down from the 71 they won in the last regional election in 2012 that they entered separately. Spain’s centre-right PM Mariano Rajoy fiercely opposes Mas’s attempts to turn the Catalan election into a proxy vote on independence. He said last week that independence for Catalonia, which accounts for nearly a fifth of Spanish economic output, would never happen and described it as “nonsense”. Business leaders are growing worried that political uncertainty over Catalonia’s future could harm trade. A Catalan business group voiced concern last week over attempts to turn the regional election into a test of support for independence, saying secession from Spain could threaten Catalan membership of the European Union and the euro zone. A report by Moody’s Investor Service said its ratings on Spanish and Catalan debt did not incorporate any potential impact from Catalan secession, “as we believe there is a low probability of the region separating from Spain in our rating horizon.”

Important Safety Information about using your Log Burner this year.

The autumn is finally here bringing with it the cooler days and nights. Many of us therefore, will be getting ready to light our log burners for the first time of the season. Before enjoying the warmth of your log burner, there are some important facts to consider. Burning wood, no matter how you do it, releases pollutants. There is no avoiding this but, how you deal with the associated problems can make a huge difference. One of the main dangers of wood burning is the excessive build up of creosote in chimney pipes. Creosote is a gummy, foul smelling, corrosive and extremely combustible substance that, if no precautions are taken, will coat the insides of everything it passes through. It is formed when volatile gases given off in the burning process combine and condense on their way out of the chimney. The gases leave the burning wood with the smoke. If the smoke is cooled below 250 degrees F, the gases liquefy, combine, and solidify, forming creosote. Creosote takes several forms, all bad. As a liquid, it can run down the insides of pipes and chimneys, oozing out of any openings. It can form a hard layer coating the insides of pipes and chimney liners. It can form into a fluffy substance that plugs pipes and breaks off and falls down, filling low spots in piping. It is the cause of most chimney fires and the reason chimneys and pipes have to be cleaned and inspected periodically. Most of us that have modern day log burners will have what is known as an “Airtight” stove. There is a seal around the door, and the burn is then controlled by using vents which control the amount of air entering the log burner. Generally most people during the cold weather stack the log burner full before going to bed and then “Choke” the air. This keeps the house lovely and warm all night. The problem is that an air starved, slow burn, produces relatively cool temperatures ideal for creosote formation. People get up in the morning to a warm house, but may not realize they have also contributed to the build up of creosote Creosote build up is pretty sneaky. You may not notice it at first but it tends to feed on itself. As it builds up, it restricts the flow in the chimney and/or stove pipes. This slows the smoke on its way out, allowing more time for it to cool and for the creosote to condense and deposit itself thus further restricting the flow. As with all problems, prevention is better than the cure. That is why it is recommended to have your chimney professionally swept in order to remove all creosote and debris, eliminating the risk of a chimney fire which can be dangerous and costly. Tony the Chimney Sweep provides a quick, clean and hassle free service in order to give you peace of mind when using your log burner this winter. For more information and a free quote. expect to save up to 80% on the cost of producing your hot water. Furthermore, a solar water heater can enhance the value of your property.

Start saving money with a Solar Water Heater Use the power of the sun this winter to reduce your energy bills and protect the environment with a solar water heater from Free-Sol. Solar power is a free, clean, green energy source and with the installation of a solar hot water heater being more affordable than ever before, there has never been a better time to upgrade your home to harness the power of the sun throughout the year. Often, things that make our lives easier are not good for the environment and things that are good for our planet can be less than convenient so it’s rare to find a product that is convenient, eco-friendly and money saving. A solar water heating system from Free-Sol is one of the most cost effective ways to help lower your carbon footprint and with oil, gas and electricity costs likely to increase, solar power is also a great way to deliver temperature-controlled hot water for FREE. The sun is doing all of the work for you, even in winter! In fact with a solar water heater from Free-Sol you can

E SAhV a wit

The installation of a solar water heater is quick and integrates with your existing plumbing and heating infrastructure. Technical advances in the design and manufacture of solar systems mean that today’s evacuated tube powered water heaters are more efficient and provide significantly better performance, delivering more domestic hot water all year round, even on cloudy days. This is because the tubes are able to absorb the energy from infrared rays, which can pass through clouds. Wind and low temperatures also have less of an effect on the function of evacuated tubes when compared to flat plate solar collectors. In fact, a solar water heater from FreeSol will produce so much hot water that in the normal sunny weather we have here in Spain all year round, you will struggle to use it all. Some of our clients even use their solar systems to top-up their swimming pools with hot water. At Free-Sol we use only the very best components and expert skills to create a solar water heater installation that excels in its quality and durability. Added to that, we also deal directly with the manufacturer so our customers benefit from a much lower initial investment. Within a very short period, the capital cost can be offset by the lower running

costs with the result that your initial investment will begin to pay you back quickly. With Free-Sol’s extensive experience of designing, supplying, installing and servicing solar water heaters you are guaranteed to have the right system, properly installed using quality components. It will end up being one of the best investments you ever make that will last for many years. We would be happy to provide you with a free, no obligation quotation and carry out a feasibility survey on your property to assess what is the most efficient installation for you, including full design, installation, commissioning, system monitoring and maintenance. All our products and components are sympathetic to the environment. We keep waste to a minimum which all helps to reduce the impact on the environment. You also have peace of mind knowing that Free-Sol solar water heaters are guaranteed for 3 years and the electrical components are guaranteed for 1 year. Letter to the editor. Journal

Dear Editor, What a sad little letter from your 81 year old reader in your last edition, and what an illustration of the problems we have in trying to get a fair deal for Campsol. This aged resident suggests we should negotiate with the council in order to get things done. He apparently doesn’t know that the CRA have been in negotiation with the council for most of the past decade. During these negotiations the CRA have been treated with absolute contempt by the Council. I once examined the minutes of the CRA meetings with the Mayor over a period of a number of years. I could have substituted the last minutes for the very first minutes of that period. Nothing had changed. Your writer complains of the leaflet we used, headed Mazarron News, during the election period. We are proud of that leaflet; everything in that leaflet is a true representation of the facts. Sadly all of the warnings we gave for Camposol if we were not supported have come true, and worse we now face the unadoption of the Urbanization under spurious legal grounds. Your writer says he and his wife vote at every election. Who do they vote for?

Do they vote for the PP who created the Camposol mess in the first place or perhaps they vote for Garcia who faces charges of corruption in the Spanish Courts. This ill-informed ignorance of reality means we have to work even harder to get our message over. The message is that there will be no real change in Camposol until the residents of Camposol use their vote to elect six or seven councilors to the Chamber. Tom Finnegan CDiP Secretary

CAMPOSOL MEDIEVAL FIESTA 2015

Whilst thousands of fiesta’s are celebrated all over Spain throughout the year there have only been a few held on Camposol, Mazarron and this year was a Fiesta unlike any other before. Many residents and outside visitors came specifically to Camposol for the event held on 28th, 29th and 30th August and they were not disappointed as there was plenty going on to suit all ages together with a fantastic atmosphere. The Fiesta Committee: Sue Tinkler, Phil Gelling, Oscar Sanchez, Antonio Hernandez Benitez, Jane Taylor and Lou Allen would like to thank all the charities, voluntary organisations, Fiesta volunteers and artistes who donated their time free of charge and also the local businesses who provided sponsorship it would not have been possible without you. A special thank you also goes to Patricio Sanchez of Mazarron Council and his team for all the facilities support given it was very much appreciated. The accounts for the Fiesta have now been finalised and we can confirm that we made €4,604.37 which is a fantastic result. This amount will be equally shared between the charities and voluntary organisations that were involved in the Fiesta these being: MABS, Los Amigos, Andreas Animal Rescue, The Camposol Residents Association and The Mazarron Leos & Lions. Daytime at the Camposol Fiesta Events kicked off at 10.00 on both Saturday and Sunday on Sector C Football Pitch and activities ran through until about 16.00. We had five-a-side football, walking football, a tug-of-war which was won by The Camposol Golf Clubhouse Team (well done lads!) and there were stalls and games for those of all ages to enjoy…… the youngsters particularly enjoyed the fun on Sector C. Oscar Sanchez prepared a fantastic Paella and this was offered free to all our visitors. Evenings at the Camposol Fiesta To everyone’s delight the ‘’Camposol Train’’ re-appeared for our Fiesta weekend and was ferrying partygoers around Camposol between 17.00 and midnight on all three evenings. It ran from Los Palacios (Sector A) right down to Sector D collecting passengers which meant that many people were able to leave their cars at home. Some of the volunteers worked as conductors on the train to make sure that everything ran smoothly and to timetable. From 18.00 until 22.00 on Sector B Lower Car Park there was a medieval market and there were many Artisan stalls to look around and purchase from. Andrea from Andreas Animal Rescue kindly came along with two of her donkeys for the children to pet. Well what can we say about the

page 24

entertainment …..it was just fantastic the atmosphere each evening was electric, everyone was having a great time and our volunteers behind the two bars on site were kept extremely busy. People will still be talking about this year’s Fiesta and what a success it was for a good while yet, it brought the whole community together. After the Fiesta entertainment concluded at 22.00 people continued their evenings in many of the great bars and restaurants on Camposol . Whilst photos of the weekend give you some idea of what the event was like they cannot portray the atmosphere on Camposol during this Medieval Fiesta………if we decide to do it again next year make sure you come along to feel it for yourselves. Many thanks Team Camposol Fiesta 2015 !

Technology Amazon Prepares to Launch 50-Euro Tablet before Christmas

priced at around 45 euro really be? Well, in the past, Amazon have actually made some pretty decent devices that fall into the extremely affordable category.

A few weeks ago we were sweltering in the summer heat and this week we’ve experienced torrential rain, hail and flooding – all part and parcel of the end of the summer season. So now it’s time to look ahead to the next few months and the run up to Xmas!

OK, so this new Amazon Fire is likely to be a little slower in opening up and the screen quality won’t be as sharp. It has even been reported that the tablet will have a mono speaker instead of a stereo one, but at less than 50 euro per tablet, Amazon won’t be making a profit.

And it seems that Amazon has already been busy on the case, as latest reports have revealed that the Internet retail giant will launch its own brand of Fire tablet costing just 50 dollars – 44,80₏ at today’s rate – this autumn, just in time for the December holiday. The company hasn’t decided to design a low-end tablet because the sales of its high-end tablet were so successful. The situation is actually quite the opposite. After sales of its Amazon Fire smartphone didn’t take off as expected, the company has been left with 170 million dollars-worth of unsold stock. Apparently, the money to be made is from the bottom end of the market, and this super-cheap 6-inch tablet is being created in order to try and attract new customers, ones that would normally shop in Walmart or other discount price stores. So, how good can a tablet

And that’s the idea. It’s more of a loss leader and a popular item on the market that hasn’t been designed to make money. The real profit will be made on the book and video streaming content that comes with it.

of launch are favourable. So, if you’re looking to buy an inexpensive tablet as a gift for Christmas this year, keep an eye out in the next month or two for Amazon’s latest offer.

Amazon is set to bring out larger 8-inch and 10-inch tablets later in the year. The American journal has also suggested that the new Amazon tablet will probably have much more of an impact outside of the American market, particularly if the exchange rate at the time

Following the success of the first smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, they launched a whole line of smartwatches which included the Gear 2, Gear Neo, and lastly the Gear S. Considering the trend it was a surprise for many that Samsung did not launch a smart watch at the Mobile World Congress 2015 with the Samsung S6 and Samsung S6 Edge. Where Samsung has stayed ahead of market trends in the smart watch category, they have not adopted the round face design as yet. LG and Motorola are going strong and are working towards the launch of this round face smartwatch which would be a first for the smartwatch business. Upon questioning, the Executive Vice president of the Samsung Mobile Marketing, Young-hee Lee, answered that the sole reason for not introducing the smartwatch alongside the S6 series was to break the status quo. Samsung was associated with launching the mobile phone and wearable simultaneously; thus, they now want to change this cycle and develop something more unique. The company requires time and resources to invest in their unique upcoming idea; hence, they have halted the launch of wearables for the time being.

2015

Mr. Lee’s statement coincides with the application submitted last May, by the company which entails the design of the round smart watch. According, to the application the round face smartwatch consists of a rotating bezel ring and a crown shaped power button. The patent application also mentions the special features including; image recognition, barcode register, and gesture controls all of which would add to the experience of wearing a smartwatch. The Samsung Orbis aims towards taking the experience of wearable to a whole new level. The round watch would not only serve the purpose of a hand accessory as served by the previous smart watches. In fact, Orbis could be multi-purpose and may be used as a keychain, necklace, and an armband. People take pride in wearing these luxurious smart watches; therefore, the Orbis would also serve the purpose of being a luxurious item, given the features it would contain. To add to the joy of loyal Samsung customers, the camera which was eliminated from the Gear S would now be added back to the Orbis and may serve as an additional incentive for users to

purchase this new item even before the launch. Last year during the IFA in Berlin, Samsung launched the Gear S and it is rumored that they may launch the Orbis along the same time period this year. What Samsung needs to keep into view is the launch of the Pebble smartwatch by Pebble, new Android devices such as the Watch Urbane, and the Apple Watch. All of these are currently in the process of launching their smart watches and may even launch it before Samsung gets Orbis into the market. Special attention needs to be given to the Apple Watch which is scheduled to be launched next month. The success of the Orbis will only be determined once it is launched and will be a crucial point for Samsung as it would decide whether the company would able to maintain its position as market leader of the smartwatch industry or not.

At the September Social we had a surprise visit from Jane Taylor of Preguntas y Mas, the Facebook group which acts as a community focal point in the area. Jane was there to present an award to Ann Lambert, President of Age Concern Costa Calida, for her considerable services to the community. She read a detailed citation which accurately reflected Ann´s determination and resolve to establish an Age Concern branch in the Mazarrón area. In 2010, having succeeded to form the legal organisation and gain approval for incorporation into the Federation of Age Concern España she then had the biggest job on her hands – making it work! For the last 5 years she has worked tirelessly to ensure that people in need were provided with the services they deserve. Ann will be stepping down next year and moving back to the UK to be near her own family. Anyone who would like to join the team, at the helm, please phone 634 310216 for more information and to arrange an informal visit. Age Concern´s annual ball at Bar La Sal

I’m a great lover of Spanish newspapers and magazines, especially when they’re left hanging around, free to read. There’s nothing better than settling down in a little Spanish bar, and groping for a discarded copy of ‘La Verdad’ (oft lurking near the pastries) usually yesterday’s, forlorn and forgotten with creases and the odd coffee stain or remnant of dried croquette. Turning the pages of a Spanish newspaper is like delving into the world of Harry Potter or Quantum Mechanics. Mostly unreadable gobbledegook, with the odd understandable passage, and of course, the easily-read headlines. This is what makes my world go around, those headlines that I always manage to fathom, somehow. At intercambio (exchange of language chats) I’ve been told La Verdad is rubbish, lies, ‘El Pais’ is much better, but for some reason I seldom see this

‘Me encanta buscar sabores con plantas aromaticas.’

apparently more truthful editorial except of course on Facebook. (El Pais in English page.) The ‘intercambio’ Spanish, of course, love The Journal, as I take handfuls of supplies down to share amongst them who rarely see an English language paper, never mind a high calibre ‘revista’ like this one. Thick, glossy, and colourful, with me in it. They pour over the pages and grin when they see my photo. ‘Guapa!’ ‘Thank you very glad’ I say, remembering my Gran’s eternal impressions of her TV sitcom heroine Nellie Pledge. I just love seeing the political and economical state of Murcia in black and white. Drug smugglers, cannabis plantations, accidents on roads ratios, street sweeping, rubbish collection problems, licenses revoked, it’s all in there. I don’t particularly want to see the bullfight results (Matador 1-Bull 0) or bull running results (Bull 12- Runners 0) but do love the Sunday magazines, usually scattered somewhere near the till, alongside the sporting supplements. It’s even been known to see Swansea City mentioned in those particular pages. Glossy fashion, skinny creatures in gold bikinis, recipes, travel articles. It’s all in there.

So do I. Well I think I love searching for flavours of aromatic plants. Usually in a good curry. Great to see the Lynx is doing so well. Can’t say the same about the Tiger mosquito, who is doing exceptionally well in this area, so well, Murcia university is studying its habitats. It really is an irate little demon hell bent on destroying our legs and arms, pushing us back into maxi dresses when we really want to run around in skimpy shorts with blemish free thighs, (those who can) and it’s alive and well and amassing the borders of our Murcian homes with ‘Chumbawumba virus.’ But, it’s all about the glossy pages and photographs really, all designed to draw us into an imaginary world of the beautiful people. One glowing article with two famous good looking guys in dinner dress bounced a headline quote; ‘A todas las mujeres les veo algo. Pero si encima tiene unos pechos increibles...’ Google it. Or look up the last two words in the dictionary.

The brothers, after wandering aimlessly for days, ask a wise man for advice. After hearing the advice they jump on the camels and race as fast as they can to their destination. Q: A landlord is threatening to evict a father and his beautiful young daughter, unless she agrees to marry him. There are a lot of witnesses and in a false gesture of sincerity, he offers her an opportunity to remain in the house without marrying him. He has a silk bag in which he says he has placed a white and a black stone from the footpath on which they’re standing. If she picks the white stone from the bag, then she wins; if she picks the black, she loses. However, the young girl saw him place two black stones in the bag. She can’t accuse him of cheating, because he would say that his good character was called into question and storm off without showing the bag. How does the clever girl win?

Los Palacios

Having had a well earned rest, the Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group are now back helping to keep our community clean and improve our fantastic urbanisation. Even though we have officially been resting during the hot summer period, several of the group have continued to work every week to ensure everywhere looks at it’s best for the influx of summer visitors. The planter project in front of the commercial centre has been complete and the guys have been busy watering the 66 pots every other day during the hot spell, but hopefully these will take less maintenance now the temperature has dropped. It has been fantastic to hear so many positive comments from people, with almost everyone saying how great the seating area is now and how much safer the area has become. We would like to thank all the businesses for supporting us with the project, Tel’s and Cat’s have also allowed us to hold a raffle on Saturday evenings during the summer entertainment period and this again has helped us raise much needed funds to continue enhancing Los Palacios in the coming months. So a big big thank you to both bars for your continued support and to Mia and Harry who gave up there Saturday evenings to run the raffles. The first batch of plaques has now been fitted to The Circle Of Remembrance in the Memorial garden, we are giving people connected to Camposol and the surrounding area the opportunity to

have a plaque placed on the circle to remember loved ones. A short blessing ceremony was recently held and the people who ordered the first 40 plaques were invited to attend. Thank you to Maureen Kent our local minister for taking the service and for everyone who attended and helped make it a special morning. Anyone interested in having a plaque fitted should contact Glyn Webb via our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/5285 64140617103/?fref=ts As a reminder the next big event in the Memorial Garden will be our traditional Remembrance Day service on 11th November, although last year the weather was dreadful, nearly 400 people attended and it would be fantastic to see so many people attend again this year. The Memorial Park team have worked hard all year and made many enhancements to this already beautiful area, so please come along and take part in this special community event. On Monday 5th October The Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group will be holding an open public meeting at 11.30am at Mariano’s restaurant following our normal group meeting. We value residents opinion and this will be your opportunity to say how you might like the groups acquired funds to be spent. More details will be displayed outside the Correos building. As part of the general ongoing maintenance programme all the footpaths and streets have again been

sprayed with weed killer to help keep the weeds down following the heavy rain at the beginning of September. The Palm Troopers have nearly finished trimming all the Pine and Palm trees in the communal areas for the second time this year. In total we have over 400 trees that need pruning on an ongoing basis. For those of you who kindly support the group with donations for books, please be aware that the cabins are now only open on Friday mornings. With winter upon us why not stock up on reading material ready for the cooler winter evenings. With three books for only €2 it really is a cheap way to enjoy yourself and all your donations going towards improving our area.

Sector D Gardening and Community Group - September News Letter. This past month work around D has been mainly preventive maintenance, predominantly watering the plants around the sector trying to keep them going throughout this summer heat. by one person, our gardener Pepe, who worked very hard not only on the roundabouts, also attending the trees that are on the centre reservation on Avda De Los Covachos that run though D down to the golf club roundabout on C North. We also have another gardener, Peter, who has attended the long stretch of road that runs around the perimeter D7, 8, 9, 10 and 20. He has also done some trench work on C south to stop the mud flowing onto the walk way. Compliments to both of them for doing a grand job. The fiesta that was organized by the CRA had a volunteer team from all the sectors on Camposol. Health &Wellbeing Uncle Paul’s problem page

Dear Uncle Paul, I am a 61 year old man and my lady friend broke up with me after we dated for 6 months. It took me completely by surprise. I loved her, and was going to ask her to marry me in a few more months. After she broke up with me, she told me that she has feelings for my best friend. Now, my best friend is not telling me when my ex and he do things together. I feel hurt, betrayed, and very bitter. I don’t know how I can deal with the two people I cared about most now. I feel that while he might not be dishonourable about my girlfriend, he is there for her, and not for me, and he is creating an opportunity for her to like him, and not me. Am I screwed up or what? Thanks for your help, Mr Betrayed. Dear Mr Betrayed, As they say the early bird catches the worm! Slow coach…. Waiting a few more months didn’t help you here did it? 6 Months? I have had rashes that lasted longer than that. Look my guess is this was not a spur of the moment decision for her Jane's Salon Home of Health, Hair & Beauty

to end your relationship. And had probably been on the horizon for a while. She liked you at the start but went off you and fancied a bit of your friend instead. You are not screwed up.You are angry and hurt because you feel that this flussy and your best friend betrayed you.You may also feel a loss of trust. The two people you cared about most have found each other and abandoned you. It happens in books and films and in real life as well. You did not do anything wrong. If anything, they messed up by ruining their friendships with you — or perhaps they just found each other, and the loss of your friendship is part of the fall out of that. Right now, it is important to take care of yourself. Allow yourself to feel your hurt and anger. Only then can you begin to move on with your life. Moving on may mean making changes with your dealings with them as a way of helping you to heal and regain your sense of well-being.You may want to talk things through with them to let them know how hurt you are. This might bring you some closure. Or, you may want to just cut your losses and dump the friendship with them both. For some people, this is a truly radical idea: There is no need to fight with your partner. Ever. Accusations, recriminations, character assassination, threats, name-calling, and cursing, whether delivered at top volume or with a quiet sarcastic sneer, damage a relationship, often irrevocably. Nobody needs to be a monster or to be treated monstrously. Nobody who yells will ever be heard. In the heat of a moment, it is always a choice

whether to go for a run or run your partner down. On the other hand, no two people in the world, no matter how made for each other they feel, will ever agree about everything at all times. (It would be quite boring if they did.) Couples do need to be able to negotiate differences. They do need to have room for constructive criticism. They do need a way to assert opinions and to disagree. And they do need to have a way to express intense feelings (that the other person may not understand or support) without feeling that they will be judged as lacking for doing so. A healthy relationship requires knowing the skills necessary for “friendly fighting” — dealing with conflict respectfully and working together to find a workable solution. Friendly fighting means working out differences that matter. It means engaging passionately about things we feel passionate about, without resorting to hurting one another. It helps us let off steam without getting burned. Friendly fighting lets us “fight” and still stay friends. ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics were once considered “wonder drugs.” These drugs have been used for decades to effectively treat a variety of bacterial infections. If left untreated many of these bacterial infections would have been deadly.

Health &Wellbeing To understand how antibiotics work, it helps to know about the two major types of germs that can make people sick: bacteria and viruses. Although certain bacteria and viruses cause diseases with similar symptoms. Antibiotics, first used in the 1940s, are certainly one of the great advances in medicine. But overprescribing them has resulted in the development of resistant bacteria, which are bacteria that don’t respond to antibiotics that may have worked in the past. Plus, whenever you take antibiotics you run the risk of side-effects, such as stomach upset and diarrhea or even a possible allergic reaction. HOW ARE ANTIBIOTICS OVERUSED OR MISUSED? Many people receive antibiotics when they seek treatment for a common cold! Only one-third of patients use antibiotics the way they should. Bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics in many ways: * Some doctors give patients antibiotics when they might not be helpful. For example, a patient with a cold may pressure a doctor into prescribing an antibiotic because the patient hopes to get a quick fix to his/her illness. Antibiotics won’t cure a cold because colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria. * Antibiotics have no effect on viral infections. The treatment for a cold is generally rest, plenty of fluids and medicines for fever and headache. * Antibiotics are misused because many patients do not take them according to their doctor’s instructions. They may stop taking their antibiotics too soon, before their illness is completely cured. This allows bacteria to become resistant by not killing them completely.

* Some patients save unused medicine and take it later for another illness, or pass it to other ill family members or friends. These practices may result in the wrong antibiotics being used. They can also lead to the development of resistant bacteria. Treating these resistant bacteria requires higher doses of medicine or stronger antibiotics. Because of antibiotic overuse, certain bacteria have become resistant to some of the most powerful antibiotics available today. Antibiotics resistance is a widespread problem, calls “one of the world’s most pressing public health problems.” Among those that are becoming harder to treat are pneumococcal infections (which cause pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and meningitis), skin infections, and tuberculosis.

horizon, but antibiotics will continue to need to be prescribed and used appropriately. This isa ll for now. If you have any question about antibiotics, don´t doubt it and ask to Camposol pharmacy team. By Juan Basilio Galindo Tovar (pharmacist).

away game, another tough encounter at Beniajan who were promoted with Mazarron last season. Mazarron fell behind to a hotly disputed goal just after half time but equalised with 20 minutes remaining. The best move of the game saw Silverio racing down the right wing before crossing to Jose and Mazarron’s new striker calmly side footed the ball into the net. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The ex-pat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members. Full details of all games, date and kick off times and coach departure times both home and away, are normally not announced until the Wednesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron. Forthcoming league fixtures are:Sunday 4th October Sporting Club Aguileno (Away) Sunday 11th October A.D. ALQUERIAS (HOME) Sunday 18th October Cartagena F.C. (Away) Sunday 25th October JUMILLA C.D. After the usual tough pre-season schedule Mazarron FC began their campaign in the Preferente Autonomica on 6th September with a very difficult home game against Sangonera UCAM. Mazarron, who were promoted last season, faced a team who had just missed out on promotion to the Tercera Division, losing out in the play-offs after finishing the regular season in sixth position. Mazarron fielded only three of last year’s regular team in their starting line up and were without the Club’s most prolific scorer in recent years, Tolo. Tolo whose 40 goals last year were a key factor in Mazarron’s promotion has moved to C.D. Minera in the Third Division and his goals will be difficult to replace. After a close fought first half Sangonera scored twice in the second period to take the three points but Mazarron showed that their new team was starting to blend together under new coach Victor. The improvement continued in the first

This year’s President’s Bash will be held at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf on Tuesday 6th October. The original artistes, Soul Power, have informed us that they are now unable to fulfil their commitment but we have been fortunate to have secured the services if the excellent Geckos to provide the musical entertainment in their place. Tickets, including a fabulous barbeque supper are 13€ for members and 15€ for non-members. If you don’t require food you can buy a ticket for the show for just 8€. There are still some tickets available so, if you cannot get along to a Los Amigos Meeting please email pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk as soon as possible. The 7th Annual Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Gala Evening and Dinner will be held at the Hotel la Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarron on Wednesday 16th March and promises to be the best and certainly the funniest yet. This year we have secured the services of the funniest speaker on the Football After Dinner Circuit, former Burnley, Wolves and Huddersfield Town star, Steve Kindon.

The Los Amigos monthly luncheon club continues to go from strength to strength with both the August trips to Alhama and the September lunch in Cartagena being fully booked. To avoid disappointment, please contact Barbara by email on pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk for details of all luncheon club events. Members and friends enjoyed a great evening at a barbeque hosted by members Alan and Sue Lyle at their home on 3rd September. Everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion bringing their own refreshments and Alan and Sue produced a delicious barbeque which was enjoyed by all. All profits raised were donated to Los Amigos funds. The Annual General Meeting took place on 26th August at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf and Dave Perks became the new President for the next two years replacing Gerard Mulligan who came to the end of his two year “stint”. Much progress has been made over the last two years, particularly on the social side and we are sure that this will continue in the future. Golf Tips 1. Hit To The Fat Part Of The Green Far too many golfers aim for the pin without considering its location on the green. Better golfers understand the importance of playing to their ability and, therefore, think twice before firing at a pin that’s tucked near the edge of the green. This may not leave them with a better chance for birdie, but certainly lessens the chance for bogey or worse.

2015

One of the biggest and most common mistakes golfers make during the course of a round is spending too much time focusing on their mechanics. Don’t let yourself fall into this trap. When you tinker with your swing during a round of golf, not only do your mechanics tend to get worse, but you also lose sight of your objective—to play the game of golf. When you get wrapped up in swing fundamentals on the course, you’re not playing golf, you’re playing “golf swing.”

Rhythm describes how you split the total time between the backswing and forwardswing. If you treat the golf swing like a pendulum and divide it into equal beats, the backswing would take two beats and the combined downswing and forwardswing would take two beats. Like tempo, golf swing rhythm should be the same for every club and every type of swing. The key to developing consistent tempo and rhythm is to understand that the forwardswing should be a gradual acceleration from the top. If you employ proper tempo and rhythm, maximum clubhead speed will naturally occur at the point of contact without putting in any extra effort. To internalize the feeling of optimal tempo and rhythm, hit five 7-irons with your optimum tempo and rhythm, and then hit five drivers trying to duplicate the same tempo and rhythm. Make sure that the start of your forwardswing is the same with both clubs. Trust the increase in shaft length to produce an increase in speed—and distance.

The next time you warm up on the range, note how well you’re swinging that day. You may not have your A swing; in fact, you may have your B or even C swing. In any case, it’s important to take whatever swing you have that day and make the best of it. If you’ve got a little fade going on the range before the round, aim a little more left than you normally would during the round and worry about straightening it out after you play. Your task for the day is to shoot an A score with your B or C swing. When you learn to do that, you’ll really be playing golf. 3: 3. Monitor Your Tempo And Rhythm Inconsistent performance on the course often

To make better decisions concerning when and when not to go for the flag, divide your clubs into three categories: 1) “play it safe,” 2) “proceed with caution” and 3) “go for it.” The clubs in the “play it safe” category are your

fairway woods and long irons. For most golfers, these are the clubs that present the greatest challenge when it comes to consistently controlling distance and direction. Therefore, when you have a shot to the green that puts a fairway wood or long iron in your hands, always “play it safe” by aiming at the middle of the green. “Proceed with caution” with the clubs that are toward the middle of the set (5-iron through 8-iron). These clubs require a judgment call on your part based on how you’re swinging on a given day. If you’re swinging well and feeling confident, you can be more aggressive if you have a mid-iron in your hands. If you’re a little off, take a more conservative approach and aim for the fat part of the green. Most golfers are the most accurate with their short irons, which are the “go for it” clubs. If you have a wedge distance to the flag, be unafraid in taking a more aggressive line to your target.

20 things you never know about the N-340 The route of the N-340 is approximately 1,248 km and runs from Cadiz to Barcelona. Today the route remains one of the important routes in Spain and has been witness to numerous episode in Spanish history, both good and bad. Here are some interesting facts about the road 1. The N-340 is the longest highway in Spain, with a length of 1,248 kilometres. 2. Most the road is actually called the A-7 (except in the province of Cadiz which is the A-48). 3. It travels across four autonomous communities, ten provinces and over 150 municipalities. 4. Its starts at the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona, and runs along the peninsula, down the coast and terminates in Cadiz on the Atlantic Ocean. 5. Gerona is the only Mediterranean province that does not cross the N-340. 6. It consists of four sections: Puerto Real-Motril, Motril-Murcia, Valencia and Murcia-ValenciaBarcelona. 7. The road originated in the 6th century. It was started and completed by the Greeks and later improved by the Romans 8. Part of the tarmacked road covers what was once the Roman road. The arch of Bara (Tarragona), recognises this as part of the history of the road, and now chairs a National roundabout. 9. The N-340 started as part of a project of building modern roads in 1926, which became known as Circuito Nacional de Firmes Especiales , which was designed to replace dirt roads. 10. The name is a numeric code. 3 corresponds to the peninsula area (in national III and IV, which is where it starts) and 40 as it is more than 400 kilometres but less than 500, in a straight line from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. 11. Kilometre 0 is the junction of the road with the current A-4, the former National IV. Currently, the site is occupied by two highways.

page 46

12. The first bridge which created the road in the province of Cadiz was opened in 1842. 13. While passing through Nerja, the N340 has a famous neighbour: the boat that was used in the series ‘Verano Azul’. 14. The epicentre of the earthquake of Lorca came less than a kilometre from the route of the 340 as it passes through Murcia. 15. The old road completely crossed the city of Murcia, straight through the city centre. It was the only city where this happened. 16. The horrific accident Alfacs campsite, in 1978, took place along this road. 17. Thirteen kilometres from the old N-340 are semi-abandoned at El Perelló (Tarragona), and are now a popular cycle route with cyclists. 18. The section of 678 to 698 kilometres in the south of the province of Alicante, is the most dangerous of Spain, according to RACE.

Summer deaths on Spanish roads rise for first time since 2006 The total death toll from road accidents this summer came in at 225 people, five more than last year, according to figures released by Spain’ DGT traffic authority. The number bucks a downward trend that began in 2006, when 542 people lost their lives on the road. Overall, however, road deaths have dropped drastically in Spain since the 1980s. In 1989, 1,378 people died in crashes even though there were significantly fewer vehicles on the roads at the time. The construction of highways in recent decades has contributed to this fall. Most of the deaths continue to occur on secondary roads, with one lane per traffic direction. Asked about the reason for the slight rise in fatalities this summer, DGT director general María Seguí Gómez noted that there was also a rise in the number of road journeys. There were 81 million long-distance trips made in July and August of this year, a 3.4% rise from the same period in 2014. Around 27% of deaths occurred on road stretches that the DGT had already identified as being particularly dangerous. Ageing vehicles may have played a

19. Another fateful episode of the N-340 was ‘the disbanded’ walk from Malaga to Almeria when Franco´s troops entered the city. During the walk the many perished with constant Carol and John harassment from Franco’s troops and Welcome you to the bombs from the Black Bull air courtesy of the Italian air force 20. According to the DGT, there is an accident every five days on the N-340. This has led some sections to have restricted passage for heavy vehicles, making them take an alternative route.

role as well, said Seguí. In 2014, motor vehicles involved in fatal crashes were 10.2 years old on average, while this year the average was 11.7 years. Seguí also underscored that “unbelievable as it may sound” in this day and age, 30 of the victims who died in cars or vans were not wearing a seat belt. And in the case of motorcycles and scooters, four of them were not wearing a safety helmet. Two cyclists out of the five who died this summer were also traveling without any head protection.

Synopsis: When Bond is on the run in Piz Gloria without his Aston, he has to rely on his future wife Tracy Di Vicenzo, and her red Mercury Cougar. With the help of rally studs for added traction on the icy roads, Tracy proves to be a

competent driver, out-cornering the henchmen trying to shoot them down. In order to lose the tail, Tracy enters a stock car race track, and after a few laps manages to escape, leaving the henchmen upturned in an explosive crash.

Driving under the influence was another cause of traffic deaths, said the DGT chief. During a seven-day campaign in August, 478 drivers tested positive for drugs, representing 34.8 percent of all tests.

Property, Financial and Legal BRUSSELS AND “ALL THAT JAZZ” No Im not talking about vegetables – I am referring to the legislation with regard to what you can and cant do with your assets. For most of us here in Spain, we have to think about assets in the UK as well as assets in Spain. Its imperative that some planning is used to be sure that your wishes on death are carried out exactly as you would wish and intend, and this is the reason why it is so important to make a Will in each country where you have assets eg a Spanish Will regarding your Spanish assets and a UK Will regarding your UK assets. For us expats from the UK we have always had the benefit of what is known as “Testamentary Freedom” which means we can leave our assets in the UK to whomsoever we wish. However, a disinherited person or anyone else who considers they have a valid reason to claim an interest in the Estate could make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, which has subsequently been amended by the Inheritance & Trustee Powers Act 2014. Its important to know that you are discussing your situation with someone who can advise you about the consequences of inheritance tax and the inheritance procedure in each country. One major difference in Spain is that inheritance tax is paid by the inheritors of the Estate, as opposed to in the UK the inheritance tax is payable from the Estate itself. Spanish house prices surge 4%, the biggest year-onyear rise since 2007 Spanish house prices surged 4.2% in the second quarter of the year compared with the previous three-month period, according to figures released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Year-on-year, the recent numbers represent a 4% rise in real estate prices. This is the biggest increase since 2007, right before the beginning of the global economic crisis and the subsequent property crash in Spain. This significant increase in price tags, comparable only to the days of the real estate bubble, affects both new and existing homes and points to a nationwide housing recovery on the back of improved forecasts for the Spanish economy as a whole. One of the keys to this expansion was the surge in existing house prices, which rose 4.6% in Q2 of 2015. New homes appreciated 1.5% from Q1. The property crash sent prices tumbling more than 36%. There was a modest uptick last year, but it varied greatly by region. This time, every Spanish region

has recorded price hikes, a fact that is accelerating the pace of expansion. All of Spain’s regions registered quarterly rises, according to the INE data. The biggest year-on-year price hikes are taking place in areas where the real estate sector is detecting the greatest demand and concentrating its housing starts: the Balearic Islands (7.3%), Catalonia (5.5%), Madrid (6.4%) and Cantabria (5.1%). Prices appreciated the least in Asturias, Extremadura and Galicia, with rises of under one percent

Bank of Spain asked to investiate double ATM charges Spanish Consumer Action Association FACUA has submitted a report to Banco de EspaĂąa (Bank of Spain) in which it requests them to act against the double fees banks are charging users for withdrawing money from ATMs and to impose the appropriate fines. Banco Santander has recently announced that they will join La Caixa and BBVA to charge this fee to customers of other banks that use their ATMs to withdraw money. The main

bank of the country has said that they expect to be charging the fee in the fourth quarter of the year and that it will be of two Euros. FACUA criticises the indifference shown by Bank of Spain and requests it to exercise its sanctioning power and take measures to guarantee that users do not pay two fees for just one service. These irregularities have been taking place since last March, when La Caixa started applying the double fee, and soon there will be other banks doing the same. Up to now, it was the banks issuing

credit or debit cards the ones that applied this kind of fees to users –from 0.65 to 1.50 Euros- for withdrawing money using ATMs of other banks; and from the fee they charged diverted a small part to the bank owner of the ATM. If this fee is kept, users who are not clients of Santander, BBVA and La Caixa will be paying twice for the same service, which is the provision of cash, the association warns. FACUA reminds that even though the bank fees are free, they must belong to services that have been effectively given. The association urges users whose banks are applying them a fee for provision of cash and now La Caixa, BBVA and Santander charge them again

the new fee, to request its refund, since they cannot be charged twice for the same service. In its report, the association reminds that Article 12 of Royal Decree 8/2014, of July 4, passing the urgent measures for growth, competitiveness and efficiency states that “beneficiaries of payment operations in which the exchange rates have been limited (...) will not be allowed to demand the official issuing the payment to pay expenses or additional fees for using a credit or debit card”. Since the double fee can also affect users from other EU countries visiting Spain, the association mentions in its report Regulation (EC) No. 924/2009, of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 16 September 2009, on cross-border payments in the Community. In Article 3.1., this law states that “charges levied by a payment service provider on a payment service user in respect of cross-border payments of up to EUR 50,000 shall be the same as the charges levied by that payment service provider on payment service users for corresponding national payments of the same value and in the same currency.”

Well what stars are Alberto, Fernando, Lola, Twiglet, Manuka and Charlie Boy, who were all on their best behaviour at Camposol Fiesta. They loved all your cuddles and attention. It was a fantastic opportunity to show off our girls and boys and talk about all the work we do. Every one of our donkeys are special and they all have stories to tell!! A big thank you to the organisers for letting us bring them along. Another big thank you to all our wonderful staff for helping out in different ways this month. August has been a busy time for holidays and with all their support and flexibility have managed to keep both shops open and cover Camposol Fiesta. We are always on the lookout for volunteers, we are a happy bunch, give me a call and join one of our teams. Four hours a week makes such a huge difference to the operation of AAR. Our lovely Lola has had a tough time this month with an infected tooth that had to be to be removed. Poor Lola was in so much discomfort we had to bundler her up and take her up to the hospital in Alicante. After booking her in for a night’s stay the tooth was removed. Nacho and his team once again deserving a great big ‘thank you’ for doing such a great job. Lola made a quick recovery and was well enough to have a starring role at the Fiesta. The shop in Roldan has been open for a month now and so far the signs are very encouraging. We are looking forward to welcoming many more customers in the next few months. Don’t forget to check out our AAR page on Facebook, where you can keep up to date with all our antics!! Progress with rehoming our dogs, current fund raising campaigns, general chit chat about all our gorgeous animals and much more, oh and don’t forget to press the like button. There is never a dull moment at AARs. August has been a month of thank yous, the donations and help you provide us with make all our work possible and a big thank you to all our supporters. As usual I am on Camposol B car park to collect any unwanted items from 1130-130pm and donations can also be received in either of our shops between 11-2pm. Andrea x

Last month we were invited by M.I. Ayuntamiento of Mazarrón (the Town Hall) to participate in a meeting with Violante Tomas, the Councilor for Families for the Region of Murcia. In this meeting we analysed the effects of the changes to the Social Services Act and discussed what is needed in order to help families in Mazarrón meet their ever increasing needs. We were very well received and it was satisfying to

I got stopped again last night by another policeman. He says: ‘I’d like to follow you to the nearest Police Station’. I said ‘What For?’. He said: ‘I’ve forgotten the way’. So I said to the taxi driver, ‘King Arthur’s Close’. He said, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll lose him at the next set of lights’ A man walks into a greengrocer’s and says, I want five pounds of potatoes please.
