Welcome to the September 2015 edition of The Journal! We trust that all everyone had a fantastic summer! August can often feel like a busy month for our readers as they work hard to keep visitors entertained. When buying a house in Spain, the estate agents never seem to warn you just how popular you will become with UK based friends and relatives during the month of August! Well at least September has arrived and we can take all take a rest -until Christmas at least! If you have over indulged this summer, and you feel like generally improving your overall health, then you are reading the right magazine! This month we have exclusively partnered with MOVE Sports Centre in Totana to offer our readers a FREE day out. They invite you to visit them, have a swim, relax in the Spa, and have a look around at the facilities that they have to offer. Return transport is included from Camposol and the Mazarron Country Club. You´ll find full details later in the magazine. If flies have been affecting the enjoyment of your outside space this summer, then look out for the advert from TJ Electricals. They now stock a product called “Red Top” Fly Catcher. In the interest of research we tested one, and they are highly effective. As many of you enjoy The Journal with a cup of tea and a slice of cake, we have refrained from publishing any photos, but trust us, they work! At the time of going to print, we are extremely excited about the upcoming Camposol Fiesta! By the time that you are reading this the Fiesta will be over, and hopefully the planning will have already started for 2016! From everyone at The Journal, we want to say a huge well done to everybody who volunteered their time and effort for the organisation of this excellent community event. It can be a difficult, stressful and often thankless task. We take our hats off to you for helping to make our community a great place to live. We will have a summary and photos in next month’s magazine. If you have any photos of the Fiesta and you would like us to publish them, please email them to us. Enjoy this month’s magazine, Robert Rutherford

Murcia man dies after horrific goring at fiesta A man has died after being gored during a bullrunning fiesta in southern Spain, in

the sixth fatal goring of the summer. The 53-year-old man was gored six times by a fighting bull during a festival in his hometown of Blanca in Spain’s southern region of Murcia. Rafael Ibáñez Miñano, who sold lottery tickets for the ONCE organization attempted to climb out of the way of the bull as it charged towards him but slipped off the barrier onto its horns. After repeated gorings he lay crumpled in the street for several seconds before the bull returned and charged into him again. He died overnight after receiving “six gorings in different parts of his body, including one that severed his femoral artery,” said medical staff at the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia. It is the sixth goring fatality of the summer. Last Sunday a man died when he was fatally gored

while filming footage with his mobile phone during a bull run. The week before an 89-year-old spectator was gored to death while watching the bull run from behind a barrier. Two others died during a week of festivities in June and a French tourist was gored to death in July. Last Monday one of Spain’s star matadors, Francisco ‘Fran’ Rivera, narrowly escaped death when he was gored in the ring.

Totana Man Killed In Night Club Brawl

Battle of the fizz: Cava takes on champagne After decades of rising exports, producers of Catalan cava are brimming with confidence and have their eyes set on taking on the “king” of sparkling

wine - French Champagne. Cava, which is produced in the Alt Penedes region of northeastern Spain, an area of rolling hills about a half hour’s drive south of Barcelona, began seeking new markets three decades ago by offering good value for money. Exports of cava soared from just 10 million bottles in 1980 to 154.7 million bottles in 2014, the sixth consecutive year that foreign sales of the drink exceeded those of French champagne. By comparison in 2014 France exported 144.9 million bottles of champagne. But of all the bottles exported last year, only eight million were high-end reserve cavas that producers now want to develop. “Cava is beginning a second stage. We conquered the world with standard cavas. Now we are going to conquer it again with superior quality cavas,” the head of the the association of small and medium sized cava producers, Pere Guilera, said.

Guilera only produces high-end cavas -- some 30,000 bottles annually of which 20 percent are exported -- at a small family-owned winery housed in an old farmhouse surrounded by vineyards near the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. The production requires a careful selection of grapes and a long ageing process of up to 12 years to create a “rich and harmonious aroma, fine bubble and a smooth texture” with a “smooth and slightly fruity” taste, said Guilera. A bottle of reserve cava costs around €20, three times less than a bottle of champagne of a similar quality. Winegrowers want to reposition Cava, whose name is derived for the Catalan word for cellar, by building on the strength gained during Spain’s economic downturn. With the domestic market stagnant producers focused on boosting sales abroad and in 2012 they exported a record 161 million bottles.

“Cava still has some way to go to improve its image in the high-end,” said Pedro Bonet, communications director at Freixenet, the world leader in sparkling wines. “We have been working on this for the last few years and bit by bit it is bearing fruit. It requires time, investment and careful staging,” he added. Freixenet has boosted sales of its highend cavas in recent years such as its award-winning Casa Sala, which is made using techniques from 150 years ago, including an authentic mammoth wooden press. Freixenet is focusing its expansion on emerging markets and especially in Asia where customers “value quality and are willing to pay a price for it,” said Bonet. Japan for example is the fifth-biggest importer of cava but when it comes to

high-end cava it is the second-biggest importer. The country is the main market for the Oriol Rosell winery, which exports half of its annual production of 300,000 bottles. The majority of its sales are on the lowend of the value chain, young cavas with an ageing process of just 12 months. “Cava continues to be seen, at the international level, as a cheap product,” said the winery’s oenologist, Salvi Moliner. “You have to find quality products and quality markets but today it continues to be easier to sell younger cava.” To change this image the association of small and medium sized cava producers is promoting the drink at congresses and among opinion makers in English speaking nations.

It is also working to promote tourism in the cava making region by taking advantage of its proximity to Barcelona, one of Europe’s most visited cities. “Our visitors are our best promoters. We treat them well, they tell their friends about cava when they return home. It is not fast but it is more lasting,” said Guilera, the association’s head. The association has set an ambitious goal: to boost sales of high-end cavas by 40 percent within a decade. “It requires a great collective effort but it is possible given the high quality of the product we make,” Guilera said.

968 103 008 Climate Change Could Threaten Tourism

The tourism industry in southern European, countries like Spain and Italy, could be under threat due to climatic change, an European Union report has warned. In a study, entitled ‘Time is of the essence: adaptation of tourism demand to climate change in Europe’, it has been found that changing climate conditions could make sunny southern tourist destinations less attractive. Hotter and drier summers in countries like Spain and Bulgaria could potentially lead to higher rates of droughts, forest fires, and the death by wildlife. The

info@camposolbusiness.com temperature rise could also make it too hot to comfortably visit Mediterranean countries in the height of summer.

However, the report also said that countries further north, with more temperate summers, could experience a resulting rise in tourist income. Thus it spells good news for northern Baltic states like Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia and Slovakia. However, the report’s predictions are focused on the year 2100 and presently

It is estimated that the southern Mediterranean countries could lose tourism revenues worth up to 0.45% of GDP every year. In the case of Spain, that could mean a loss of up to 5.6 billion (ÂŁ4 billion) a year.

Every year close to the end of September Barcelona holds its largest street party, the Barcelona La Mercè Festival. This article will give you the low-down on what is probably the highlight of Barcelona’s festival calendar. Barcelona Cathedral night illumination (Photo) Barcelona Cathedral night illumination during Festes de La Mercè (Photo) The dates for the festival are normally on the 24th of September, but are still to be confirmed. La Mercè history Barcelona La Mercè lasts for around 5 days and is a festival held in honour of Mare de Deu de la Mercè, the Patron Saint of Barcelona. The festival, which officially first took place in 1902, bids goodbye to the summer with a bang and welcomes in the cooler months of autumn. How to get there By far an large the best way to get this festival is by train. The streets will be filled with events, parades, fire runs (Correfoc)and people! So it’s highly advisable that you don’t consider driving, unless you intend to use it in the city centre during the time of the festival. There are hundreds of activities that will be occurring in the Mercè Festival this year however there are some “staple events” that are now famous at the festival. Here are the details of some of the main events at the festival:

Tuesday and Thursday Menu de la noche - 3 courses 11.95 Wednesday and Saturday Steak night - 2 courses from 10.95 Friday - from 12.30 Fish at the bistro: A selection of home cooked fish as well as our beer battered cod, choice of peas with hand cut chips.

If you are going to experience the Correfoc it is highly advisable to take protective clothing because often powerful sparkler fireworks are sprayed into the crowds. People should bring hats, protective glasses and thick long sleeved tops that Correfoc - Fire Run will protect you from the flying sparklers. There is normally 2 types of Correfoc on the same evening. One of them is for the children and is a lot more tame than the “adult” Correfoc which happens later on in the evening The Correfoc event takes place at dusk. Normally along and around Via Laietana. The road will be closed off and then opens to “The Devils”. The Devils are special community groups that dress up like devils and parade the streets during certain festivals in Barcelona. La Mercè is one such event. The devils run up the streets with bangers and hand held fireworks. Lots of bangs and fire is the order of the day. Fire breathing dragons (or at least sparkler-breathing dragons) also roam the streets with Devils skipping along with spiralling fireworks held in their hands. The “adult” Correfoc takes place after the “junior” Correfoc. The main difference with the adult event is that the crowds are actually sprayed with flames from the sparklers. If you are of a nervous disposition then maybe you should consider standing well back from the Correfoc itself.

Reader Letter

Dear Editor, In the last 14 of my 81 years I and my wife have lived happily in Spain. During this period we have experienced 3 elections, and, in each of them, be it CRA or the CDIP, purporting to represent us the residents of Camposol, have always insulted Spain, the current mayor and council or Mazarron. In my relatively long life I have always found that it is better to negotiate on a civil but firm basis and in a friendly manner as possible. Initially, at the last election, the CDIP told us that they would achieve 8 seats on the council. How they came to this conclusion, bearing in mind that the system here in Spain is based on proportional representation, really defeats me. They followed this up with an election leaflet called `Mazarron News´, which was the most insulting document that I have

ever seen. We now have a Dr Peter Pitt continuing these insults in the Journal. In addition, he compares council finances with a small working town in Spain to an area within the Greater London Council. Most of the people who live here are pensioners on fixed incomes, and even if his comparisons were found to be valid, could not reasonably afford his figures or his solutions. Finally, he continues his insults to the residents of Camposol, deeming them to be apathetic regarding their voting rights. Incidentally, my wife and I have always voted, whenever possible, at the

“The gazpacho-m0nk” Going Spicy In Spain- Start with Your Popcorn Ok, truth be told this recipe has little to do with the Iberian Peninsula, originating more as it does more than 5000 years ago in Peru. But people do speak Spanish in Peru (though possibly not back then. However… The fact that the spices were introduced in Spain, long before they turned up in the kitchens of other European nations. Though Spaniards publicly recoil in horror at the mere mention of spicy food, they do in fact love it (guindillas and gambas a pil-pil for example). Spicy Popcorn therefore makes the ideal starter, and whenever I have served it to locals, it’s been gobbled up furiously, accompanied by a decent bottled beer and talk of times when Spain was far spicier than it is now. Ingredients Corn (Maiz) for Popping (no not whatsoever mention microwaved bags - see below) Sunflower oil Cumin Chilli powder

1. Avoid microwaved popcorn: Hidden ingredients are suspect and have been linked to respiratory problems. 2. Avoid using coconut oil to pop the corn, and avoid using butter or margarine to top it off. This process - used extensively in cinemas across the world - is estimated to produce the same fat content as bacon eggs, a big mac, fries and a steak dinner combined! Instead, go for the healthier option- Go Spicy.

“Camposol Kitty Kitty – Summer Update” Due to the extreme summer heat we have been forced to take a neutering ‘cap nap’! Capturing feral/stray cats can be very stressful for them, some cats will never have been near a human let alone put into a cage and they often panic, the high temperatures only add to their anxiety and releasing a cat after a surgical procedure out into the heat is not ideal. However CKK has not been resting on its laurels! We have been focusing our efforts on identifying stray cats in the area which are then placed on our list for neutering when temperatures drop and our campaign resumes. This involves gathering info on the local cat colonies, talking to neighbours and making sure that all the cats we are aware of are safe. The team works together to ensure that all the donated food gets picked up and taken to where it is most needed so all cats have daily

access to fresh food and water. CKK continue to monitor and assess their age, health and whether they will require trapping or are friendly enough to coax into a cat box for neutering. Nursing mother cats are added to our list for future neutering once their kittens are weaned and big enough to be left without mummy for a few hours. We also keep an eye out for ill/ injured cats which may need emergency veterinary attention. And key to CKK’s work is of course … building as much trust as possible with the stray cats themselves. So you see we have been more than busy these last few months! Just one reminder …. the first thing we do when we bring a cat in for neutering is ask the vet to check for a microchip in case it is owned. Did you know that in Murcia it is illegal to keep a cat or dog without a microchip and to do so puts your animal at risk? Are your pets microchipped? Enjoy the rest of your summer – thanks for your support! Uncle Paul’s problem page

Dear Uncle Paul I am 56 year old man and live on the Country Club. I have man boobs and would like to lose them. It is very embarrassing and gets me down. When I go to play badminton they bounce around like they are doing a rumba or rats in a bag! What can I do to lose them? I am of average weight, but I just have this fat that gives me breasts and I’ve been getting depressed about it. I am trying my best to lose them and nothing seems to be working. Do you have any tips to help me lose them faster? Hope you can help me out. Lardy Man

Dear Lardy Man I know how you feel! Have you seen some of the ugly mammaries that have come out to play, now that the heat wave is here. Not only man boobs but man belly, legs, faces and nasty man socks and sandals… Put them away!!! Bring on the cold weather I say. A lot of people, men and women have a body part that they don’t count among their favorite things. When you make a change and don’t see results, it can be frustrating. The good news is there are a number of ways to address your chest, while also helping you establish a healthy relationship with your body. Supplements and severe cutting down on food intake (i.e., starving yourself) may seem to put you on track for fast results, but they are not likely to be healthy or sustainable solutions. Shifting your focus from a quick fix to addressing some lifestyle issues like diet and exercise will lead you to visible, lasting results. That being said, if lifestyle changes, getting active and maintaining a healthy diet is not helping you see the results you want, making an appointment with your doctor may be the next step. They can help you explore the possible causes of your man boobs and recommend treatment. Identifying and targeting the cause of your man boobs will help determine the treatment options. Surgical removal of tissues is also an option, which can include liposuction (which removes fat tissue) and mastectomy (which removes breast gland tissue). I wonder if they do two for one? Uncle Paul

page 28

Dear Uncle Paul I have been dating this very attractive lady and we have been together for over a year now and things appear to be going well. I am 59 and she is 57. One of the few things that I dislike is that she still thinks I should pay for everything. I pay for most of her shopping (we don’t live together but she cooks sometimes), all restaurant meals and when we go out for a drink. She does not drive and never offers to contribute to the costs when I’m driving her around all over the place. She has two houses and rents one out to earn extra money and also has a good pension from her husband who died a few years ago. The other thing that really gets my goat is that she keeps saying that she is a girl, in a silly voice and is using that as an excuse not to pay for things. My view is that while men should pay for restaurant meals and that sort of thing at the beginning of a relationship, as time goes on it should be a mutual thing and expenses should be shared. I love her and just feel that I need some third party advice to get past this. Bankrolled Dear Bankrolled You shouldn’t have to pay. Your girlfriend sounds like another one of those old mutton princesses you see dressed up has lamb who thinks that the world owes her a living. Tell her to pay up some cash or you’re on your bike. Why should you keep doing this? It’s not like it’s your first date. You have been together over a year! There is no reason she shouldn’t pay her share. If you have to keep doing this, get a younger model and pay her instead. The tradition of men paying for women is from past decades when many women didn’t work. Men were the chief earners and paid for women when they took them out. This often continued after marriage when women stayed home and kept house and men were the main “providers”. That’s all changed. Many women earn good wages or have their own money. In most cases there’s no reason for them not to pay their own way. Your lady friend may have grown up where her parents made her feel she should expect this from a man or it was what she became used to from her husband. Or maybe she’s just milking the girl card for all it is worth.

I hate to generalize, but I do think some girls do want it both ways. Freedom to go out and do what they want but still be treated like princesses. They still want to be swept off their feet financially and romantically by some knight on a white horse with a large stick. Tell her you love her and love the relationship but from now on she’s going to have to start paying for herself. Alternately, try a less direct route and just stop paying for stuff. Don’t offer to pay at the till or bar, start walking away when it’s time to pay. Eventually she will pipe up and say something and you need to tell her calmly that you want an equal footing relationship and don’t see how it’s equal when all the money is coming from you. It’s not an easy conversation but it’s a conversation you need to have. Oh and tell her to grow up and stop the little girl voice and say it sounds like a cat is being swung around by its tentacles’. Uncle Paul Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul I’m not sure if there is an easy answer for this problem but the fact of the matter is I know I have a problem. Three years ago I had a gastric band operation. At the time I was 19 stone and needed the operation. I had tried dieting for what seemed like my entire life but no matter what I did, I could not lose weight. After the treatment I lost a great amount of weight and I was quite content. I didn’t care about food either, and I felt beautiful and confident. My current partner is a gym junkie. A very large, fit, muscular and attractive man. I had my band adjusted to be a little tighter and then a short while later did the same again. This went on until the band was so tight I fought to keep even liquids down. I have lived like this for the past 7 months now, lying to everyone around me about what I do (and can) actually eat, being sick in secret, passing out regularly and at one stage ending up on a drip because my blood sugar had dropped so low. I can’t seem to bring myself to go to the doctor and I can’t be honest with my partner. He’s been so encouraging about my weight loss and has no idea what I have done. He’ll happily accept me at my much higher weight and would not asked that

2015

I become smaller. So I cannot blame anybody but myself for this. Uncle Paul is there a way out? Fat Soul.

Dear Fat Soul How did this happen? The way everyone gets an eating disorder is step by tiny step. Small cakes to big cakes, big cakes to five big cakes. The good thing is you writing in shows you know it’s time to make a change. You just don’t know how. So let me tell you what to do. The first and most important thing is to ask for help. You can’t do this on your own. Your boyfriend is a good place to start. If he is a good bloke and loves you he will understand. From there, you should see your doctor and tell them what has been going on. I can tell that you know what you are doing to your body is dangerous. There is a little voice inside you that says when you lose another pound it will make you a better person. But of course that’s not true, because you are already worthwhile now. You are worthwhile - but not perfect. Chasing the perfection ideal is destructive. None of us are perfect. We all have our faults and one of life’s greatest gifts is learning not to run away from them. Talk to your boyfriend and see your doctor. Please! At the end of it all, you may have lumpy legs, spider veins or a few

rolls of skin on your stomach, but you can go to the gym and be fit and healthy. But you will never have a perfect body. It is not the size of your bum that counts but the goodness and kindness inside you. And never take your body - and all it allows you to do in life - for granted. It can be gone in a moment. Uncle Paul

Finally, Sony has unveiled its SmartBand 2 fitness tracker It has an advanced heart rate sensor and a variety of communications capabilities. It informs wearers when they get calls, messages, emails or notifications on social media sites. It sports interchangeable silicone rubber bands in black, white, pink and indigo. The SmartBand 2 is compatible with any device running Android 4.4 KitKat or later, as well as iOS 8.2 or later. It can be submerged in up to three meters -- nearly 10 feet -- of water without damage, although it has an uncapped

microUSB port. “We were able to water seal the external part between the slot and the core casing, explained Sony spokesperson Anthony Devenish, but “we recommend users ensure the port is completely dry ... before charging the device. In that respect, the SmartBand 2 is ahead of the UP4 from Jawbone, noted Angela McIntyre, a research director at Gartner. “Jawbone wasn’t able to make their band waterproof to swim with, she told TechNewsWorld. Sony will offer the SmartBand 2 in 60 countries worldwide. The SmartBand 2’s Tech Specs The SmartBand 2 has an accelerometer and heart rate sensors. It automatically tracks activities, including walking and running, and it maps the user’s heart rate.

Details are filed in Sony’s Lifelog app, which displays historical data. The SmartBand 2 has automatic sleep detection, and a smart alarm clock function that will vibrate to wake users at the best time, based on their sleep cycle. It notifies users with subtle vibrations and three pulsing RGB LEDs when they get calls, messages, emails or tweets. Users can control music on their smartphone or tablet by tapping on the SmartBand 2 to play, pause or skip through tracks. The SmartBand 2 vibrates to alert users when they’re more than 30 feet from their connected smartphones or tablets. Its battery charges within one hour and each charge lasts up to five days. The SmartBand 2 will receive over-the-air updates through its host application and the Lifelog app on linked smartphones. What about Smartwatches? Competition in the fitness band market is fierce, and any new features introduced by one maker soon will be implemented by others. Given the increasing number of features on fitness bands, including notifying the user of incoming emails and calls, could consumers purchase a fitness band instead of a smartwatch? “I use my Fitbit as a watch -and I prefer wearing it to my smartwatch, because it’s slimmer and not so obtrusive, said Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen. Also, “I can get credit for all the walking I do during the day, he told said.

A Thing of Beauty The SmartBand 2’s assortment of colours may increase its appeal to consumers. “We’re finally entering that phase of the market where we’re going beyond high school science experiments and getting devices you won’t mind wearing,” noted Ramon Llamas, a research manager at IDC. Still, “what’s meaningful is the applications you have on the device,” he said. “Users don’t want to be inundated with a lot of useless information -- they want it streamlined and looking good.” The Sony Smartband 2 goes on sale in September priced around 119€

Android phones will now come with fewer pre-installed apps

Android users will soon be getting a little less bloatware on their phones. Google has relaxed its requirements about which apps have to be permanently installed, which means apps like Google+, Google Play Games, Google Play Books and Google Newsstand will no longer come pre-installed. The new Samsung Galaxy Note 5, for example, already doesn’t have Google+ pre-installed. Even though Android is largely open source, Google has saddled its handset partners with app requirements — and there’s no wiggle room. If, for instance, HTC wants to make an Android handset with the Gmail app, it historically would also be required to give customers Google+ and Newsstand. Not only does bloatware take up valuable storage space and memory, it takes away choice on the part of the consumer. And while there will now be less bloatware from Google, there are still other carriers and manufacturers with apps that they would love to have preinstalled on the phones. And no, this isn’t the death of Google+ or

2015

Newsstand. The apps will still be regularly updated and available to download in the Google Play Store for those who want them.

Asteroid Will Not Destroy Earth In September

Nasa has stated in clear, unequivocal terms that a worldending asteroid impact will not occur in September. The American space agency was forced to issue the denial after rumours went viral online that the US government was covering-up the news to prevent panic. The rumours specifically claimed that an impact “near Puerto Rico” was set to occur between 15-28 September 2015. Originating from a prophesy told to Reverend Efrain Rodriguez by none other than God himself, the rumours had suggested that the impact would cause “wanton destruction to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States and Mexico, as well as Central and South America”, Nasa explained. “There is no scientific basis -- not one shred of evidence -- that an asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth on those dates,” said Paul Chodas, manager of Nasa’s Near-

Earth Object office, in a statement one imagines was issued through gritted teeth. “In fact, not a single one of the known objects has any credible chance of hitting our planet over the next century.” Asteroid impacts are fairly common, of course, but Nasa said that of all the rocks currently known about and classed as ‘Potentially Hazardous’ there is just a 0.01 percent chance one would hit Earth in the next century. “If there were any object large enough to do that type of destruction in September, we would have seen something of it by now,” Chodas said. “Again, there is no existing evidence that an asteroid or any other celestial object is on a trajectory that will impact Earth. In fact, not a single one of the known objects has any credible chance of hitting our planet over the next century.” Good news for the Rugby World Cup and the release of the next iPhone? Sure. But in the long term not necessarily tremendously reassuring news for the rest of the planet.

Caroline Angus Baker Book Review Unlikey Warriors by Richard BaxellThis book caught my eye while I waited in the entry queue at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid last year. Off to see the Dali exhibit, along with a trip to see Guernica and the civil war exhibition for a second time, I spotted this book in the gift shop as I shivered in the cold. Me – war book – sold. Talk about finding a gem. Unlikely Warriors is a remarkable accomplishment, with solid five-star reviews for excellent reason. Baxell has taken research to a new level, and used archives and interviews in the UK and the Abraham Lincoln files in New York, and material not yet published. Interviews from the Imperial War Museum in London have been accessed to give a rich account of those who went to Spain to fight the righteous fight. The International Brigades have

page 32

been fleshed out like never before, along with those who went to fight for various other factions, including those who went to serve Franco’s side.

The reality put volunteers at a disadvantage from the start, with many without military training, and provided with exceptionally little. With the International Brigades, just one part of many groups fighting together in an uneasy alliance for the Republican

cause, leadership was haphazard, as was any type of planning, along with weapons and gear given. While many volunteers were Communists, those in power among the forces also had to battle against other leaders from other groups. It meant that those on the ground never genuinely formed a coherent group, unlike the united forces under Franco. The massive battles undertaken by British forces, such as Madrid, Ebro, Brunete and Jarama, were bloody affairs littered with an enormous death toll. Just the struggle alone within the medical divisions was horrific as they fought to save the lives of young men, whose cause became increasingly hard to identity. Fighting fascism is a broad notion, to be romanticised as men, gun in hand, throw themselves at the enemy, but Baxell does not subscribe to this notion. The author gives a more realistic and honest account of war, where individuals are convinced of one thing at home, and struggle when faced with the gruesome battles in Spain. Some volunteers were hopelessly inadequate for the war in Spain, due to age or experience, and some were there for the wrong reasons. Caroline Angus Baker is a Duendeloving Kiwi author of the ‘Canna Medici’ thriller series, and the ‘Secrets of Spain’ historical trilogy. Spanish Civil War nerd, Bullfighting bystander and Valencia aficionado. Professional dreamer, book reviewer, byronic heroine fan, Spanish history lover and architecture. You can find her book on Amazon.co.uk

www.thejournalspain.es

2015

The book starts off with the realities of life in the UK for those who heard the calling to Spain. While the stereotypes stated that volunteers were ‘radical romantics or middle-class Marxists’, the reality was far different. A large majority were working class, and no doubt imagined they understood the battle that Spaniards faced. However, the upper class, intellectuals and writers were littered among the brave men, from a great range of lifestyles across the class divide. What the International Brigades had was working class men fighting alongside those highly educated, for a common cause, and Baxell has written about these people in a fluid and enjoyable down-to-earth style. The men, the majority Communists, fought under the premise that if Franco won in Spain, Hitler would then go on to victory with his own endeavours. While Britain and France sat idly by, individuals were able to see past self-interest and faced a brutal reality for the common good.

week for unlimited use at any time of day. Our offer for the expats is this: On the open day we will waive the 20€ registration fee, and offer free registration for this day only. Depending on the demand, we could also arrange transport from Camposol and back that coincides with when Peter is there. But I want to say something important. On the day there is no pressure to sign up. If people want to, then fine, but there is no obligation. They can go home talk to their friends and then sign up later, but the free registration is during the open day only. E: Wow. That is a good offer. And not only that, you have a British gym instructor too, Peter. Please tell us a bit more about what people can expect. Interview with Jose and Peter Marsden at Move Gym in Totana In August we caught up with Jose Garcia, the managing partner in MOVE Gym, Totana and Peter Marsden his newly appointed British Gym instructor and interviewed them about a special offer that they have been working on for expats in the area. Editor: Hi Jose and Peter, How are you both? It’s great to speak to you. Both: Fine and you too. E: Jose, can you please tell our readers a bit about the gym and why you have chosen to appoint an English speaking gym instructor? Jose: Ok, well, MOVE has been running the Gym here in Totana for many years. We feel that we have done a good job for the people of Totana and surrounding areas. I have always believed that the British Ex Pat community would really benefit from coming here, but until now it’s been difficult to implement a plan. Many of the Ex-pats do not even realise that the Gym exists and is so close to where they live. Also I feel that maybe they are worried to come here as they are concerned that the language may be a barrier. E: Okay, so you mention a plan, what exactly are you planning to do?

page 34

Photo: Jose and Peter J: Put simply, we want to invite the ex-pat community here for an open day, we will give them a tour of the building if they wish, or if they prefer they can walk around at their leisure. Once they have done that they are free to use the facilities, for instance, the pool, Spa or the gym. Whatever they choose. E: So just to clarify for our readers, this is a free day out? J: Free in every sense. We will even provide transport to and from MOVE, but if people want to make their own way here, they can. E: That sounds great. But can I ask? What are you hoping to achieve by allowing our readers to use all your facilities for free for the day and providing a coach for them? Is there a catch? J: There is no catch- none. We want people to experience our facilities so that they will enjoy themselves and they will tell their family and friends and then come back. That is all. But for the expats that want to come back again we will be make a very special offer for them. E: Carry on… J: Okay this is a very special offer, and the number of places that we are going to designate to it are limited. So it will be based on a first come first serve basis. Then the monthly fee for unlimited use of our facilities including classes is only 26.95€. That’s only 6.21€ a

www.thejournalspain.es

Peter: Hi, basically the open day is exactly as has been described by Jose. My job here is to make the ex-pats feel at home, and make sure that they enjoy using the MOVE gym. I am a qualified, gym, spinning and aerobics instructor so people are in good hands. I will be creating a varied time table tailored to suit men and women of any age. All my classes will be put together specifically for the people that I am instructing. I will also be the point of contact to answer questions for those thinking of joining, for members who need help with anything and I’ll just generally be around to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that everyone has the support that they need. It’s simple, any queries at all, call me and I’m happy to help. J: This is a good point that Peter has made. We have a duty of care to all of our clients. ALL of our instructors must be fully qualified with no exceptions. We are monitored closely by the Ayuntamiento of Totana for this. Naturally we ensure that we have the highest standards in this regard. E: Jose, Peter, thank you once again. Enabling our residents to have access to facilities such as these, and at such amazing prices, personally, I feel that it’s a great opportunity for everyone in the area. I wish you both luck, and look forward to seeing you at the open day on September the 10th.

You’ve probably flown into Alicante or San Javier, struggled with luggage and kiddies, to spend time in Murcia. You survived. I rarely fly to Spain, preferring to shovel goods, chattels and cat into car, amble onto ferry with almost casual exchange of passports to whoever is manning the booth, meander around decks, bars, and various shops on board, sleep, eat, drive. But this year, I had to use an airport. In July. ‘You don’t have to be rich to travel well’ Eugene Fodor Enter Jet2 and Ryan Air, stage left. Off to centrally heated Lancashire for a wedding, bearing hand luggage, staying at the happy couple’s house meant most things (including socks) were provided. A reunion layover with friends living ten minutes from the airport, meant we could leave the car nearby and get a lift to San Javier in the morning. ‘See you next year’ was exchanged as they’d be back in Scotland three days later, meaning a taxi would be needed on return. We reached security;- no plastic pouches for liquid cosmetics. Moderate panic. A nonchalant guard waved us through. No searches, kept my shoes on, sidled into a deserted departures hall. However, with my gorgeous-wheelsin-all-directions, pockets, zips and leopard print weekender left at home due to Virgoman’s insistence it wouldn’t pass the measurement test, I had been relegated to a Hugo Boss, bought-in-aboot-sale-for-two-quid-bag, useful for alleged trips to the gym, with carryhandles and little else of use. Our regular Monday and Wednesday maintenance workers have continued with street cleaning, weeding, spraying and watering! A new raised flowerbed has also been built opposite the Sensol Villas office. However, we have experienced a really demoralising month of tree stakes being damaged and stolen, tree ties cut, taps turned on (and a very precious 2000 litres of water lost), and another oblong planter has gone missing, matching the planter previously stolen. Please, if you see anyone spoiling the backbreaking hard work which the team and volunteers have put in, speak to someone, we will keep all contact in strict confidence. The very humid and hot Summer continues so please think of both the plants in your own gardens and those planted near your casa by our volunteers; All are suffering in these temperatures and winds so if you would like to adopt a tree, please choose one (or however many you wish!) planted either along the roads or near the different features we have, then just tie a ribbon or tape on it to designate it as ‘yours’; Total responsibility for it’s watering and care will pass to you and you can watch it grow and flourish knowing it’s because of you! Trees may be adopted as a way of remembering a special someone, or just to become more involved in looking after your area. September sees the re-commencing

of our volunteer working parties on Wednesday mornings at 9am near the Sensol Villas office; if you can spare some time and energy to help, we would really be grateful and your efforts are always rewarded with a free breakfast! We continually receive positive comments about the transformation our teams have made to ‘C’ sector North: It’s hard to recall what it used to look like before the tidy verges, trimmed palms (thanks this month to a resident for a substantial donation towards that) and swept streets, so if you’d like to make new friends and get some muscle definition at the same time, please get in touch

A huge thank you must go to the kind Camposolers who donate to our bucket collection together with those who are members of our maintenance scheme, and of course those who have worked on individual areas near their own homes; without your support and that of our volunteers, none of this would happen and it all makes a huge difference. Our next Social Evening is at the Golf Club, 8pm on 9th October: entry by ticket only; 6 Euros donation, and tickets will soon be available for our Christmas Meal and Dance on 11th December at the Golf Club House. Please support us at these functions as they promise to be great evenings in the company of good friends! If you have any unwanted gifts which you’d like to donate for our raffles, they are always appreciated, thank-you. Further details of both these events can be found on our ‘Bin’ notices or contact John, our Chairman, on 634

10 Ways to Stay Mentally Young Older brains, like older bodies, can continue building new mental connections. As life spans continue to lengthen, it’s becoming increasingly clear that our brains as well as our bodies are amazingly resilient and adaptive. Even 90-year-olds can build new muscle mass through physical exercise. So can their brains, although what’s being developed is not new muscle but new synapses. And while some of the exercise that produces these effects is physical, most of it is mental.. Brains like to work. But the work that seems to do the most good entails fairly challenging thinking about new subjects. In learning new things, the brain creates new synapses, or connections, between neurons. And more synapses and a denser web of connections are associated with maintaining cognitive health in older age. Doing predictable things, even if challenging, appears more likely to use existing neural pathways. This is not a bad thing and being engaged with tasks can be beneficial. But newness is the key here. And as it turns out, it is common for older people to engage in fewer new activities as they age, and even to withdraw into narrower circles of behaviour and interactions with other people. With that in mind, here’s a list of 10 things experts say can help keep your brain young, even as your chronological age increases. 1. Learn a new language. This is at the

Health &Wellbeing top of many lists for activities that give your brain a real workout and force it to create new pathways to learn. 2. Learn an instrument. Well, maybe the kazoo doesn’t qualify here. But the combination of learning new physical skills on an instrument and also learning to make music is great mental exercise. And music seems to unlock memories even in people with advanced dementia. 3. Get lost. Go to an unfamiliar area and force yourself to navigate it. We’re not talking about a war zone, but perhaps a new neighbourhood or strange museum or other venue that’s new to you. Realizing you have the skills to deal with new situations builds confidence, and gives your brain a workout. 4.Volunteer. Getting involved in a new endeavour will introduce you to new people and activities. Broadening your circle of friends and acquaintances is healthy on multiple grounds. 5. Get uncomfortable. This is another variant of getting lost. If we only engage in comfortable activities we know, part of us stops learning and growing. Accepting the feeling of being a bit uncomfortable—with new surroundings, activities and people—is a good way to help yourself become more open to new experiences and learning opportunities. 6. Be physical. Assuming your doctor approves, aggressive physical exercise is good for your body and, research is finding, also great for cognitive health. Even moderate exercise has big payoffs.

7. Play new and challenging games. Your brain loves to play. In fact, play appears to have a stronger role in human development than for any other animal on the planet. Again, it helps fire up those new synapses if the game is new and not too easy.

8. Take classes. Exposing yourself to new ideas, classmates and even classroom settings hits several of the targets that experts associate with cognitive health. 9. Embrace new technology. Staying connected in a digital world may seem like an uphill slog you don’t want to take. But it can have huge brain-health benefits, as you learn new things and connect with new people and ideas. 10. Keep opening new doorways.Your brain is endlessly curious about the unknown and appears to be a sponge for new ideas and experiences. You should be, too.

Good Health Habits at Age 60 and Beyond Do you feel as good now as you did at age 40? At age 50? If the answer is no, read on.You might be able to feel as good as you used to (or even better) by picking up a few new healthy habits. It may seem like more trouble than it’s worth to start doing something new. However, even small changes can improve your health. One small change you can make is to add some activity to your daily life. Another is to add more fiber to your diet. What if I’ve never been very active? Will starting now really make a difference? Yes! Physical activity is good for people at any age. Among older adults, falls are a common cause of injury and disability. Physical activity makes your bones and muscles stronger. When your muscles are strong, you’re less likely to fall. If you do fall, strong bones are less likely to break. Regular physical activity is also good for your brain. Studies have shown that people who do simple exercises (for example, walking briskly) on a regular basis are better able to make decisions than people who aren’t physically active. I haven’t been physically active in a long time. I’m afraid I’ll get hurt when I start. From diabetes to heart disease, many chronic (ongoing) health problems are improved by even moderate amounts of physical activity. For people who have these conditions, a lack of exercise is a bigger risk than an exercise-related injury.

Health &Wellbeing Talk with your doctor about your plans before you get started.Your muscles will very likely be sore when you first increase your physical activity, but don’t consider that a reason to stop. Mild soreness will go away in a few days as you become more used to exercise. What’s the best way to get physically active now? For most people, walking is one of the easiest activities to do. Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week, but you don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once. Try walking for 15 minutes twice each day or for 10 minutes 3 times each day. People who have started being physically active later in life say that exercising with a partner is motivation to stick with it. Some suggest starting or joining a walking group with friends or neighbors. Others suggest getting a dog that needs to be walked. If walking isn’t your idea of a good time, try gardening or dancing. Go fishing or swimming. The activity can be both enjoyable and good for you. What about strength training? When your muscles are strong, activities like getting out of a chair or holding a door open are much easier. If you decide to lift weights, start with a 1-pound or 5-pound weight. If you don’t have weights, you can use a can of soup, a book or a full bottle of water. Keep your weights in the same room as your television and do a few exercises while you watch. Another way to build muscle is to use a resistance band (also called an exercise band). Resistance bands are flexible and come in different lengths. They are commonly used to strengthen upper arm and leg muscles. Why should I eat more fiber? Fiber can improve your health in 3 ways: 1. It helps your colon work better 2. It reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer 3. It may help lower your cholesterol level Men over 50 years of age should get 30 grams of fiber per day; women over 50 should get 21 grams per day. I don’t want to start eating healthy

food. How can I get more fiber without changing my diet completely? You don’t have to change your diet all at once. Try making 1 small change at a time. For example, if you eat 2 slices of white toast for breakfast, replace 1 of them with a slice of whole grain bread. If you drink orange juice every day, eat an orange instead for 3 days of the week. If you prefer salty snacks, try low-fat popcorn instead of potato chips. Some people find it helpful to focus on adding a single high-fiber food (see the box below) at each meal or snack time.

Sports Mad Dogs & Englishmen!!! No truer words can be said than those above, when 16 members of the society played at Hacienda del Alamo on Wednesday 22nd July. With a nice early start the round got under way, and then the sun began to do its best and heat up the course. By midround the thermometer was up into the high thirties.

Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C

Pres-season training for Mazarron FC began on 3rd August with many prospective trialists keen to show their paces to the new coach, Victor. During the

A lot of water was now being consumed as the holes passed by, and eventually a return to the club house air conditioning was achieved.

signings included Jose from Alhama, Silverio from Balsicas, Juanito from Ciudad de Murcia, Juanfran from Olimpico de Totana and Juanma from Alhama as well as the return of old favourite Munir, better known as “The Colonel” from Bala Azul.

He was followed by Ian Dalley, and Tony Rootes in joint second place on 26 points. Clive Hathaway came close with 25 points. The handicap secretary can now get out his pen and do his best to take the smile from their faces, ready for the next game. They did not stay there long however as they finished 3rd in their first season and went up to the Preferente with their second successive promotion. This was the season that Mazarron were relegated from the Preferente so our paths have not crossed. In his first season in the Preferente, 2012/13 Victor took Alhama to a respectable 8th position and the following season, 2013/14 they won the league title and were promoted to the Tercera Division. As could be expected for a team that four years ago was in the Segunda, last season, their first in the Tercera proved a difficult one, but Victor still managed to steer the Club to safety avoiding relegation in the last game of the season. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The ex-pat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games, something unique in this area where away support is almost non-existent. Coach tickets for away games are 8€ for Los Amigos de Mazarron FC members and 10€ for non members.

We had to wait for one team of stragglers, but eventually when all were back the cards checked a winner was declared.

With a very good score of 30 points John Taylor (pictured) won the Stapleford for July.

season when they were in the Segunda Autonomica and they finished top of the league and gained promotion to the Primera.

Unfortunately, it seems at the time of writing that prolific goal scorer Tolo will not be playing for Mazarron next season. Cut backs in the grant received from Mazarron Council have meant that the Club has had to re-examine its policy of bringing in players from as far afield as Cartagena because of transport costs to and from training and to matches. Tolo does not have transport and with none of the other Cartagena based players being retained it appears that he is about to sign for Deportivo Minera in the Third Division. The decision also appears to mean that key players last season such as Monty, Liders and Manu will not be retained but it is the loss of Tolo which is most upsetting as his goal scoring feats, 40 goals last season, are irreplaceable. On the bright side, Mazarron appear to have secured the services of a really up and coming young coach. Victor is a young man who has had great success in his coaching career so far. He began coaching at EF Alahama in the 2010/11

The child should only ever use the car’s fitted seatbelt when it can pass over the shoulder joint and not touch the neck. If not they should remain with the Group 3 Booster cushion. No child under the age of 12 should be permitted to sit in the front passenger seat.

Child Car Seats in Spain- Are You Breaking the Law? Much has already been written about the importance of fitting the correct car safety seat for babies and children. This guide will assume that nobody needs to be convinced of that fact, but will instead look at the regulations and the law here in Spain concerning what type of car seat should be fitted for babies and children of what age group.

The only exceptions to these regulations are when a child is travelling a short journey in a taxi and in an urban area. What are the legal penalties? As the driver of a vehicle, you are legally responsible to ensure that any child passenger is using the appropriate safety device for their size and/or age. Any driver who is found to be in breach of these requirements could face a significant fine and a deduction of 3 points.

It is the legal responsibility of the driver of the vehicle to ensure that all of his passengers are wearing the appropriate safety device. Firstly, as in most other countries in the EU, the term ‘children’ is taken to mean those under 12 years of age, and those who may be older who are less than 135cms tall. There are basically 4 different styles of safety device used in motor vehicles : 1.) Forward facing car seats 2.) Rear facing car seats 3.) Booster seats 4.) Seat belts Age : up to 18 months / Approx weight : up to 13 kg Fitted facing away from the direction of travel for maximum support and safety in the event of an accident, and secured by straps over each shoulder, leg and fastening between the legs. Often classified by the manufacturers as “Group 0” or “Group 0+” A baby seat should never be fitted on a front passenger seat when the car has an airbag activated. Age : 18 months to 4 years / Approx weight : between 9 – 18 kg

page 46

Similar fixing to the above seat, but forward facing. Classified by the manufacturers as “Group 1”. Should only be fitted in the rear seats that are directly behind one of the front seats IE Not in the middle. Age : 3 to 12 Years / Approx weight : between 15 – 36 Kg

Furthermore, failure to wear a seat belt or failure to ensure that a child passenger uses an appropriate child restraint or wears a seat belt according to the legal requirements described above, could invalidate any claims against your motor insurance cover. Lastly, you may also be liable for civil proceedings for damages, if you failed to safely carry someone else’s child in your vehicle.

Property, Financial and Legal Foreign buyers boosting Spanish property market An increased number of foreign buyers is set to boost the residential property market in Spain. A new market forecast report from Instituto de Practica Empresarial (IPE) business school, in collaboration with property company Mar Real Estate, suggests the market could grow by 10% in the area. It also says that the market is set to grow by between 5% and 7% in major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona and 3% in other cities. The IPE says that home prices on the Costa del Sol are already up 10% this year, and now represent 5% of all sales nationwide and if sales continue growing at their present trend, the property market in Málaga province will increase to 20% of the overall Spanish market. The growth is buoyed by foreign demand for holiday homes in Spain and the IPE report suggests that surging sales will help reduce the glut of new homes in costal areas. Indeed, the excess inventory of new homes is expected to fall by 50% this year.

CAA640

Luxury home sales, in particular, are coming back strongly on the Costa del Sol, according to the IPE report, driven by a better exchange rate in Pounds and Dollars, and the security and stability of Spain. Meanwhile, the latest report from property valuation firm Tinsa says that the Spanish property market is undergoing a widespread recovery. Average property prices fell by 2% year on year in July, the lowest rate of decline since May 2008 but this masks growth areas along the Mediterranean coast in particular with some areas seeing price growth of 2.8% year on year. The data shows that on the Mediterranean coast, where prices have fallen by an average of 47.6%

and Canary Islands where average prices have risen by 0.2% and 0.9%, respectively. Tinsa data also shows that five of the top 10 most expensive property hotspots are located in the Balearic Islands but Alejandra Vanoli, managing director of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty, said that there are prices per square metre in these locations that far exceed Tinsa’s estimations. ‘It’s not unheard of to reach as high as €30,000 per square metre for the most desirable Port Andratx home. Demand is strong from some of the wealthiest individuals and families in Europe, the US and beyond,’ she explained. Tinsa figures also suggest that the Balearics weathered the storm of the Spanish property market price ‘correction’ more positively than the rest of the country. While the average drop in prices across the whole country stands at 42%, in the Balearic Islands most regions registered less than a 35% decline. Palma was also highlighted by Tinsa as property transactions increased by more than 50% in 2014, higher even than the mass volume markets of Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Indeed, luxury

bricks and mortar is seen as one of the main drivers behind the strength of the Balearic property market. Tinsa director Jose Antonio Lopez states that the luxury coastal market is one of the areas where the turnaround is most clearly seen, owing to the differing dynamics at the top of the market.

Spanish Economy Will Grow Twice the Rate of Germany This Year There have been many favourable reports regarding the Spanish economy for more than 12 months now, and it seems that the positive news will continue for the remainder of the year and that Spain’s economy is going from strength to strength. According to the latest report from the BBVA Research department, Gross Domestic Product will increase 3.2% this year. This is more than double the 1.5% forecast for Germany and the euro zone as a whole. In actual fact, Spain will experience the biggest economic growth this year out of all the other euro-zone countries, ahead of Germany (1.5%), France (1.3%) and Italy (0.7%).

BBVA Research seems to be convinced that one million jobs will be created in Spain between now and next year because of the improvement in the economy. Domestic growth has been the catalyst for the recent economic recovery, while exterior demand has remained much the same. Changes to Spain’s current fiscal policies have meant that Spaniards have slightly more money in their pockets and are not so cautious with their spending. The projection for next year is also favourable and the economy is expected to grow 2.7%. This is in comparison to the 1.9% calculated for Germany, 1.7% for France and the 1.3% for Italy. With regards to the health of the EU as a whole, BBVA Research claims that growth is probable and the economy has remained stable despite the crisis in Greece. Internal demand is solid, inflation is low, petrol prices have not risen too much and the debt-purchasing programme implemented by the European Central Bank are all factors that have helped maintain stability

We did it!! And on schedule. Our new shop in Roldan opened on Saturday 1st August. Many thanks to all our volunteers who made this possible. Please come and see us Monday to Saturday 11-3pm on Calle San Juan Cruz, 30709 Roldan, Murcia. We have a great range of stock from clothes to haberdashery to furniture, cards, kitchen wares and much more. We also need more volunteers to come and join our happy team you only need to commit to 4 hours a week, please contact me on the details above. We had a major trauma in July with a beautiful pony called Moreno. And, oh boy was he in a bad way with a severely broken leg. We marched up to Alicante with him to see our wonderful surgeons and were sure with their skills and expertise they would be able to be put him back together. Sadly the damage to all the tendons, tissues and bones was so severe he could not be saved and our boy slipped away peacefully. We were all absolutely devastated. We gave this boy a chance and we take some comfort from that……..here at AAR we truly believe if there’s a will there’s a way……. Little Will is still with us and looking for that perfect home. He is a delightful cross donkey/pony and is approximately 18 months old. Tiny Tim the teeniest, weediest puppy I think we have had the joy of rescuing is now weighing in at an amazing 3 kilos having been brought into the shop at only 18 days old and no teeth and weighing only 330 grams. He too is available for adoption, subject to home checks. All our furry friends are surviving this long hot summer, which is more than we can say for our carers!!! Please remember to walk your dogs when it is cooler and have plenty of water available for them at all times. Another easy way of helping our animals is to sponsor one of them. Alberto who is one of our oldest residents is very lucky to have his food provided by one of our wonderful followers. Keep up to date on our Facebook page with all our adventures! We are always on Camposol B car park every Monday between 11.30- & 1.30pm to collect unwanted goods to sell in our two shops in Roldan and Mazarron. Think that’s if for this month, try to keep cool and have a wonderful summer.

our Outreach team who, despite the sweltering heat of August, continued to work hard all month to distribute much needed help to our clients. We require more drivers for our van which is in continual use picking up and delivering items, plus our food collection from Lidl Supermarket on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and for the Aid Days that we have every month. If anyone could spare some time and would like to become involved with our charity, please call or email us or drop into either of our shops. We are currently preparing for the festive season and collecting items to give out to the children we support in our area. Donations of toys, colouring pencils and colouring books or items suitable for older kids would be gratefully received. We also need more of the usual items like toiletries, sanitary towels and items for babies such as baby wipes etc. These are distributed to our families and are always in high demand. These can be deposited in our Aid Bins located in QuickSave (Camposol B), The Tea Pot Café (Puerto de Mazarrón) or can be brought to the shops or our van which is at the Country Club on Mondays and the car park at Camposol A on Tuesdays between 11.00 and 1.00 and on Table Top days the second and last Friday of every month at the commercial center B. The children are returning to school this month and we are making an urgent appeal for children’s clothes. Many of our families are desperate for suitable clothing to send their children back to school in. Most schools do not require a uniform; therefore any suitable garments would be gratefully received. We recently distributed filled pencil cases at our Aid Days, they were really well received. The children’s faces lit up and the parents were really touched by the kind contribution to their children’s education. Last month our Aid Day coordinator went with representatives of The Red Cross in Mazarrón, with whom we work closely, to visit our most needy clients in the countryside. The Red Cross has special aid packs for homeless people and those living without electricity and water to help them prepare for Winter with items such as fleeces, socks and sleeping bags. Working in collaboration with them is so heartwarming and helps our clients get the extra help they need. We thank you for your generous and continued support in our quest to Make a Difference to so many families in our area who are less fortunate than ourselves. madmazarron@live.com Tel: 634 357 137

A priest and a Hindu are making toast. The priest exclaims “look there is an image of jesus in my margarine!” The Hindu replies “ I can’t believe its not Budda!” Hello, You have reached the Men’sHelp Line, my name is Bob. How can I help you? Hi Bob, I really need your advice on a serious problem. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. You know, just the usual signs: The phone rings and when I answer, the caller hangs up. Plus, she goes out with the girls a lot. I usually try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home, but I always fall asleep. Anyway, last night about midnight, I woke up and she was not home. So, hid in the garage, behind my boat and waited for her. When she came home, she got out of someones car, buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment, while crouched behind the boat, that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard motor mounting bracket. Is that something I can weld, or do I need to

Last month’s Suduko answers

replace the whole bracket? Q; What do cows do for fun? A: They go to the moo-vies! A newlywed couple on their honeymoon prepares to see each other naked for the first time. The husband exposes his knotted and twisted feet. He explains, “I had tolio as a child.” The wife asks if he means polio. He says, “No, it only affects the toes.” He removes his pants and reveals deformed knees. He admits, “I had kneesles, too.” Finally, he pulls off his boxers. In shock, the woman gasps, “Oh no -- smallcox, too!” An old lady goes to the doctor and says, “I have this problem with frequent gas. Fortunately, the farts never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact, I’ve farted at least 10 times since I’ve been here, and I bet you didn’t even notice!” The doctor says, “I see. Take these pills and come back next week.” The next week the old lady returns. “Doctor,” she says, “I don’t know what the hell you gave me, but now my silent farts stink like the dickens.” The doctor says, “Good! Now that we’ve cleared up your sinuses, let’s work on your hearing.” A police officer was staking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible drunk drivers. At closing time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb and try his keys on five different cars before he found his. Then he sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. Everyone left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started his engine and began to pull

away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered a Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be. The driver replied, “Tonight, I’m the designated decoy.” A mechanic noticed his coworker drinking brake fluid at lunch. “What are you doing, man? You can’t drink that stuff!” “Relax,” replied his co-worker, “this stuff tastes pretty good, and I don’t drink it all the time.” “Seriously,” the mechanic exclaimed, “that brake fluid is poison!” “Hey, man” yelled the coworker, “back off! I can stop any time I want.”

Answers to last month’s Riddles A: The wife was about to have a baby. They drove to the hospital. The husband left to get a wheelchair, but the baby was born in the meantime, and the wife didn’t survive the birth. A: The man has hiccups; the bartender scares them away by pulling a gun. A: It was winter. He fired the gun near a snowy cliff, which started an avalanche. A: The man used to be blind -- he’s returning from an eye operation which restored his sight. He spent all his money on the operation, so when the train (which had no internal lighting) goes through a tunnel, he thinks he’s gone blind again and decides to kill himself. But before he could do it, he saw the light of the cigarettes people were smoking and realized he could still see.
