Drag Fund Raiser 1st December
Fantastic fun had by all for International World AIDS day. The Yumbo centre came together to raise money for Amigos Contra El Sida (Friends Against AIDS), the local HIV charity supporting residents and tourists alike throughout the year on all seven islands in The Canaries. A great big Thank You went out to Orlando of Aces for all his tireless work. The now traditional Drag Fund-Raiser took place on Thursday night, with workers, locals and professional drag queens all joining forces to visit every bar and restaurant in the Yumbo Centre, collecting money to donate to this very worthy cause. While the glamorous troupe did their rounds a music and comedy show was performed at

Bar Meicker and Buddies bar, hosted by Miss Jazmin and Miss Marks, with guest stars Geraldine & Gunter Klute, who kept the guests energised and amused. The Drag Queens returned with aching feet, make-up running and collecting tins rattling, the square, now full of feathers, sequins, glitz and glamour. A big red ribbon filled the square alongside a small aces stall who sold commemorative ribbons and candles so that visitors could light a flame to be placed on the ribbon in remembrance of those they’d lost. While the collection boxes were counted Miss Marks hosted a Drag Queen Pageant to find Miss Wold Aids Day 2011. With several random
entries including editor of The Canary News Edward Timon who had been all too easily coaxed into getting involved and swapping his Jodhpurs for fishnets and donning a silver and red sequined number in the Las Vegas lounge room style for the evening. Alas, despite having an amazing makeover courtesy of Sparkles Show Bar doyenne Chanelle Fontaine, he could not quite compete with the other glittering ladies of the night! Two independent judges announced the winner as being Guapo magazine’s Marcel, whose alternate personae for the evening, Miss Ivana Humpalot, collected the cherished sash and the title for this year’s event. honour of announcing that a grand total of €919.19 had been collected in just over an hour of furious drag queening collecting and with a final bit of encouragement the guests at Bar Meicker and Buddies pushed the total over the 1K mark for a whopping great €1064 donation to ACES. An amazing feat to be much congratulated. Well done all who took part. Sincere congratulations too to the very hard working organisers who made this all possible, Jamie Hill, Mario Puzigaca & Steve Marks who have, we are lead to believe already started thinking about next year’s drag fund raiser which we are looking forward to with no small amount of glee. The two annual Bazaars are vital events in the church calendar at Holy Trinity as the maintenance of this historic building, an official Canary Islands Heritage site, is an ever increasing burden financially and the church is also committed to giving part of the income to local charities, which it gladly does. A determined crowd of hard-working volunteers were not going to be put off by the unexpected grey clouds and sprinkling of rain on Saturday last as preparations got under way for the Bazaar at Holy Trinity Church in Las Palmas. But plastic covers hastily went on (and off, and on) the books, the clothes , the home made jams and the raffle prizes, while at the other side of the gardens preparations for the barbecue suffered a temporary setback as the skies opened, though fortunately only briefly. As the sun broke through, relief was felt by all who had been working for weeks to make the event a success. A busy trade was soon being done on each stall and weary shoppers were able to sit out to enjoy their

CHRISTMAS SERVICES
As in previous years the Evangelical English Church will again this festive season be leading carol singing at a number of venues in the south of the island. On Monday 13th December there will be carol singing in Diamond’s Bar in the Yumbo Centre at 7:30pm and on the following evening, Tuesday 14th December, in La Bolera on Avda de Tomás Bosch, Puerto Rico (close to McDonalds) at 7:00pm. If you are in the area please do call by, join in and enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit. On Wednesday 15th Decem ber the Templo Ecuménico in Playa del Inglés is the venue for an evening of Christmas carols and readings celebrating the true miracle of Christmas. The event will start at 9:00pm and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy this celebration of Christmas. On Christmas Day
Sunday 25th December there will be Christmas services held in both Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico at 11:00am The International Evangelical English Church has been meeting in Playa del Inglés for many years and in more recent years Puerto Rico. If you are looking for a real Canarian Experience on the 13th of December the delightful celebrations in honour of Saint Lucía are held in Tirajana. These are considered to be of significant interest because they combine authentic religious festivities with contemporary popular culture. It is a must see if you have the time. The mixture of originality and tradition has lead to events such as the procession of the image of Saint Lucía on the 13th of December, and the coronation of “The Lucía” statue of the virgin and her Swedish counterpart, which is brought specially from Sweden, followed by the pilgrimage of the Day of the Farm-worker on the next Sunday. The Day of the Farm-worker (Labradores) is the feast day in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary. It is the day that brings together the largest number of visitors. Thousands of pilgrims come together dressed in the traditional pilgrim outfits with black hats, espadrilles, and the Canarian knife. They bring traditional foods and drinks such as pumpkin, goat’s cheeses, pastries, wine, rum and even fried sardines. On that day the carts are pulled through the streets by oxen or tractors and the pilgrims on them offer the visitors their food and drink to taste.

HISTORY
“Just 3 kilometres to the north of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ,in this picturesque place of eternal spring, set in wide gardens pretending to be drawn as capricious squares of lawn, the elegant Santa Catalina Hotel stands in over 1400 square metres” Thus the newspapers of 1890 eloquently described the inauguration of the hotel. It’s building was justified by the intention to increase tourism, and by all those English ships that, searching for fortune, arrived at Las Palmas harbour on ‘stopovers’—during the Africa round-trip, carrying their commercial cargoes. Motivated by the necessity to create a resting place where the British adventurers could comfortably stay, the“ English/Gran Canaria Island Company Limited” began building the hotel in 1882. Eight years later it opened, having been constructed to the exacting demands of refined English society. In 1950 the Hotel was extensively damaged by fire, and subsequently re-built. Prominent local architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre stamped a Canarian impression on the new, but by
using the original plans succeeded in maintaining the old charm and character of this listed building. A memorabilia exhibition includes in its 1890 advertisements :- “luxurious hot water baths, ,horse-riding, bathing and boating”. If that was considered luxury, then the modern version certainly preserves like-lavishness. The 200 spacious rooms boast king–size beds, oriental carpets and plush furnishings. State-ofthe-art facilities include a Spa and fitness centre, beauty therapy, heated pools, jacuzzis, saunas. Golf, tennis and other sports are available. Its privileged and beautiful location, lavish accommodation, gourmet cuisine, superb service and stately bearing have attracted many illustrious clients, including Heads of State, Royal families and celebrities from all corners of the globe. Dear Mr Timon I was interested to read Mr Watson’s letter about the young man from Madeira with a progressive degenerative nerve disorder, Friedreich’s Ataxia, who will be sailing on The Lord Nelson from Lisbon to Las Palmas in December. Among a group of expat friends who volunteer here in the south of Gran Canaria I am privileged to know Helen Gay Oulton who has worked with the Jubilee Sailing Trust for more than 20 years. I contacted her for advice and she is delighted to liaise with the Lord Nelson and organise the support needed for Joel and his brother. As Joel speaks Portuguese, I have sourced a number of Portuguese speakers, 3 of them from Madeira: hopefully we will be able to have a native Madeiran to meet them in Las Palmas! We are in the process of arranging sightseeing outings for the young men, taking them by wheelchair-access minibus. Perhaps someone would like to help cover the cost of the minibus? I hope we can get some input from expats living in the Las Palmas area regarding suggestions for wheelchair-accessible sightseeing in our capital on the first day of their stay. I am confident that we can make sure the boys are brought to the airport punctually on 31st of December. We have a good network of expats of many nationalities here in Gran Canaria, volunteering in the local community and fund-raising for various charities and individual needs. It is heartening to hear of this initiative from our counterparts on Madeira and a pleasure to be able to lend a hand. Who knows, perhaps this can inspire us to do something similar for a young person in Gran Canaria with a similar background? Sincerely, Hazel Peers Holager

hank you so very much not only for your your lovely letter but also for so readily responding to a call for assistance such as the one we printed in the last edition. When I first came to this island I was informed that community spirited action and charitable donations were next to nil here and that most people had little or no interest in trying to support
others’ causes when the simple art of surviving day-to-day can often feel so difficult. Yet I have been repeatedly amazed at the generosity of the resident community. My original information, so it turns out, was quite wrong. The people who live here, and in particular the English speaking community, have shown themselves to be more than willing to lend a supporting hand to those who might need
it most and repeatedly shown themselves to be a quite selfless and caring bunch. Community spirit, on Gran Canaria, is alive and thriving it would seem. We have had a few good responses to last edition’s letter of the week, but few as proactive as yours. It is looking like the two brothers who will be visiting us from Madeira at the end of December are may well have a great time. We look forward to

I have worked for the Jubilee Sailing Trust and been their representative in Spain for 22 years. I have also sailed on the Lord Nelson seven times. We have always used Candido for transport and I have a very good relationship with him, so I can arrange transport to the hotel and to the airport.
Great to hear from you. Yourself and Hazel have been extraordinarily helpful in organising a range of choices for Joel and Emmanuel to consider during their short stay here. I am sure that between now and our Christmas edition many others will be coming forward with ideas. With your help I have no doubt that the boys will be spoiled for choice.
I thought that the lads would not want to do too much on their first day here, they will be tired after the voyage. Perhaps a walk along Canteras beachfront, lunch in one of the restaurants there, a visit to the Pueblo Canario, some music in the evening. I have spoken to Antonio Pujol about taking them free of charge on the Bluebird Ferries from Puerto Rico to Puerto Mogan, perhaps with the company of Alfredo, who came here from Madeira 40 years ago with the first Bluebird and has been with them ever since. The Lions Club Ladies have very kindly offered to invite them to lunch in Puerto Mogán where the Marina and beach promenade provide easy wheelchair access. Alternatively we could take them to Sioux City. It is possible to manage wheelchairs there; I have done so in the past. We can see if this of interest. I will be meeting the Lord Nelson when she arrives. If anyone wants to accompany me and be introduced to the captain, I would be very pleased. It would be great if the ships could be given some publicity by the newspaper. They do such a wonderful job and times are hard. Best regards, Helen.

There is no swindle behind it so long as any information given about the prducts is truthful and correct.
Property tax Q: Some years ago the city council (Ayuntamiento) asked me to pay yearly property tax though the flat also belongs to my siblings as well as me. Can I request the city council charge my siblings as well? A: Property tax is a tax of a material nature and not a personal one. This means that the tax is payable by the owner of the property. As the property has several owners, it can be requested from any of them with no obligation to send receipts to every owner. There will only be one receipt or liquidation and it will be requested from the owner registered with the ayuntamiento or from which ever owner lives most locally. Whichever owner pays has the right to claim that the other owners pay their share of what has been already paid in advanced on behalf of the others.

I live in my deceased mother’s house Q: My mother was the tenant on the lease for the flat in which we were living together. She died and my siblings and I have continued to pay the monthly rent by direct debit and to live in our home without having communicated the situation to the owner of the flat. Can we go on like this without having to tell the owner? A: As soon as the owner finds out they could legally evict you as the lease is under the name of a now deceased person and you have not notified the landlord who has the right to know the name of their tenant. You must let them know that your mother has died in order to change the name on the lease to new legal tenant (who could potentially be you so long as the landlord agrees or it is written in the lease that you have the right to subrogate – to substitute for the former tennant).
Financial support for ex-prisoners Q: My son has been in prison for three years for theft. He is looking for a job but has had no luck up to now. Does he have any right to obtain financial support? A: Yes. People who have completed a sentence in prison, of greater than six months,
have the right to receive aid of €426 a month for up to one and a half years (18 months). He needs to go and register himself at the INEM (national employment office), declaring that he does not receive any other income and that he does not have the right to obtain other unemployment benefits. Likewise, people who would have concluded drug rehabilitation treatment for six months or more and have been declared fit can also claim this benefit.
Timetable visitation rights Q: Can we ourselves agree a different schedule of visits for the children's father form the one decided by the judge or do we have to notify the court? A: Parents can establish another timetable of visits for the father in practice but this kind of agreement has to be recorded in written form and it is best to inform the court, as well, in written form. If you do not take this precaution, one of the parties can breach the established norms which have not been written down nor been notified to the court. And this can lead to a judicial claim for breaching a sentence and have consequences in the form of a condemnation. Never modify the timetable on your own. You can suggest a modification to your ex-partner with a registered letter, asking him or her to accept it and to confirm their agreement in the same manner. The court can reject the modifications if they notice that it could harm the child or children in question. Depending on the age of the child, the Court can request a hearing in order to obtain an opinion from the child themselves about the proposed modifications.

It was not an unexpected result: disenchantment with the incumbents and their austerity measures was such that Gordon Brown could have won with one eye shut, had he been the only opposition candidate. Nevertheless, investors saw the result as a beacon of democratic hope after changes of government in Greece and Italy had taken place during the preceding fortnight without the benefit of a popular vote. Also, Sr Rajoy had said he would do “everything possible” to rebuild financial markets’ confidence in Spain and restore its triple-A credit
rating. Nobody had a clue how he might go about achieving that but at least he was making the right noises. There was also optimism that the European Central Bank would scale up its buying of Italian and Spanish bonds. A figure of €20bn a week was bandied around. Another story had it that the ECB was going to lend money to the International Monetary Fund, which would use it to buy government bonds at issue, a tactic forbidden to the ECB. Those rumours quickly proved to be as groundless as the notion that the new Spanish premier was armed with some hitherto-undiscovered economic magic wand. Early optimism faded and it was back to reality by Tuesday. The UK economy brought little to
what was turning out to be a depressingly miserable party. Wednesday’s release of the Monetary Policy Committee’s November minutes showed, as expected, that the MPC had discussed quantitative easing (or, as the Bank prefers to refer to it, asset purchases). Also there, however, was a hint that no decision on a further round of purchases would be taken until the current programme has run its course in three months’ time. Despite - or perhaps even because of - all the good-news-bad-news euphoria and despair that have come and gone during the month the pound has been stuck within a range of little more than two cents since the beginning of November. Because everyone seems content with the situation
it could continue there for another week or maybe longer. Cautious buyers of the euro should hedge their exposure by fixing a price for half the currency they will need. Those with an appetite for risk might consider covering less than half the amount, given the way EU leaders appear to be organising themselves for failure. Gran Canaria is one the best places for road cycling in the whole of Europe for a number of reasons. The weather: it is close to perfect riding weather all year round, and only during the summer months can it get a little too hot for those who are not experienced riders who know how to hydrate and rehydrate when necessary. The roads: Skillful use of EU money has given Gran Canaria some of the best roads in the continent. The roads are aesthetically perfect for road riding, and it is no wonder that almost every cycling magazine in Europe has been here at some point for features and articles. Scenery: We all know how beautiful the mountains are here in Gran Canaria, but cycling through Santa Lucia or Fataga will always take your breath away. If you are in the “trade” and know your cycling jerseys from the bovine variety, then riding in Gran Canaria could have you pedalling alongside, if only for the briefest of moments, some of the most illustrious names in modern professional cycling.

Cycling in Gran Canaria
Where to go For road cycling, the best start point for a day or week of riding is nearly always the south of the island. This is because the north generally has more traffic and is very built up, meaning a lot of dual carriageway and tunnel work before you get into clear air, basically not recommended. In the south especially at Playa del Ingles, you will be riding on quiet sunny roads heading into the mountains within minutes of the beach.
A straightforward ride, and a good one to start with, is to take the GC60 road to Fataga from Playa del Ingles and on to Mirador de San Bartolome. This is a ride up to 955 metres above sea level and will take a reasonable cyclist about 3 hours there and back to do the 50 kms. From there with your map you can see the variety of routes going on and up. For example you can continue on to ride up to the summit of the island - Pico de las Nieves at 1951 metres and add another
50km to your day. It is highly recommended even if you are reasonably fit to have a triple chainset on your road bike, this is because the gradients can get very steep and the effort can drain you before you get even half way. There is no shortage of stopping points or villages to get a boost and nearly every hamlet will have a roadside restaurant to help take the strain. The weather in the higher parts especially above 1500m has a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde
character. So is it advisable to always have a wind cape with you to keep the cool wind from cooling you down too much. From the summit, there are 2 or 3 different routes to take down and back to Playa del Ingles, you can head east down the GC130 to Ingenio and pick up the GC500 from there, or you can head west on the GC605 down to Arguineguin or further to Mogan and come back that way. Every cyclist also wants
a good cyclist shop, and if you are a cycling tourist here, then the best all round shops are Free Motion in Playa del Ingles and Kamikaze in San Fernando. Both of which can provide you all the information you’ll need about routes, excursions, weather, road bike hire, bike repair, parts, cycling clothing or just plain old advice. Beware the White Van Men! It seems these days that there is an abundance of choice when looking to move things to and from the islands from overseas. As times have become more difficult economically so more and more small ads have appeared [in other publications] offering cheap transport to and from England and further afield. The fact is, though, that in the south of Gran Canaria there really is only one professional transport company who can guarantee you an end-to-end service without the worry of whether you will be faced with unseen
extra costs or worse still that your shipment may not arrive at all. There have been many instances of well thought out quotes being undercut by many thousands of Euros by guys with little more than a mobile number and a van, no paper work, no office, no landline, no company registration and no insurance, only for their clients to find out that there is much more to pay to actually complete the job. Whether it be customs or the need for further transport once the shipment is in port, to get it
to its destination. We’ve even heard the story of one guy who has allegedly repeatedly conned various different clients in to using his services only to pick up their goods here on the island, take a ferry to the mainland, drive a small distance over night and then report everything as having been stolen to the police, leaving his customers with no paperwork, no proof, no refund and no belongings. We all have a tendency to trust people more if they come from a similar place to ourselves, however just
because someone is English (or whatever your nationality) does not mean you can trust them more than someone who is able to provide you with all the necessary paperwork and costs involved in getting your goods from and to the place you want and offer you assurances and recourse should there be any problems. The first thing to remember always when comparing prices is “What are you paying for?” If somebody quotes you a much lower price than a professional company who have offices, years of experience and are

Complaining in Spain and the Canary Islands by
Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author. One of the worst things that the newly arrived expat quickly faces is the sudden inability to complain if things go wrong. Spain may well be a member of the EU family, but when it comes to complaining, the expat would be wise to remember that it is a very different culture and pace of life. After all, isn’t that why we left the UK in the first place? Forget shouting, being abusive and banging your fist on the table, because, at best, you will be completely ignored or possibly sent to the end of the queue to sulk, or, at worst, you may see the inside of a prison cell for a few hours. One of my first experiences of trying to make a complaint in Spain was about our new home in the Costa Blanca. We had no water and the electricity was on builder’s supply, which meant that it was very erratic. Most of our neighbours had similar problems, and after endless weeks of waiting, breakdown of electrical appliances, unfulfilled promises and
several freezer loads of food destroyed, we had enough. At that time I had very little Spanish, other than the ability to order a bottle of wine and basic food items. Staff in the builder’s office could speak English; after all we had bought a property from them in English a few weeks earlier. However, when it came to after sales it was strictly Spanish speaking only. Out of desperation one morning we went to the sales office to complain, and it was a true eye opener. We joined the queue of angry people. Two harassed young women were trying to do their best to calm angry clients. It was a painfully slow process and involved many telephone calls, long, tedious explanations and much sharp sucking in of breath - a mannerism which I detest at the best of times, because it usually means that there is no likelihood of anything being done - ever. After about half an hour in the queue we noticed one unshaven man in a grubby vest and an unpleasant disposition, who had arrived in the office before ourselves; he was clearly very angry and could hardly contain himself. When he reached the counter, the young woman smiled and asked what she could do to help. His response was to bang on the table and shout considerable abuse at the poor woman. Although we were angry too, I found myself feeling very sorry for her having to deal with this thug of a man. He snarled and growled
about his problems, which I gather was something to do with a faulty water heater. The young woman watched and said nothing as she pressed the buzzer beneath the counter. After what seemed like several minutes of abuse, two police officers burst into the office, pistols bristling at their side and duly handcuffed this protesting lump of foul-mouthed humanity. We cheered as our countryman was bundled into the waiting police car outside. It was several days before we saw him again, greatly subdued. I believe that he became a much better person after his night in the cell. In contrast, other neighbours took a very different approach. An attempt at speaking Spanish in a calm manner, together with the occasional box of chocolates worked wonders. I also recall these neighbours taking the office staff for a meal on one occasion! As a result, our wise neighbours were connected to the mains water and electricity supply very quickly, as well as having many of their other problems attended to promptly and courteously. We very quickly realised which was the most successful approach when complaining to the builders. Customer service in Spain is good overall, but you have to be patient, prepared to give up a full morning and persevere. The golden rule is to remain calm and cheerful, despite the surging feeling
of anger inside. Remember too that whoever is trying to help you also have their own problems and issues to deal with, and they will get around to dealing with your problem eventually. Yes, basic good manners and an attempt at the language go a long way in Spain, as it does in most other countries.

Growing daily: The Language Exchange Group meets all over the island

Think Spanish: they express themselves differently. Here are more examples of how to sound less , er - foreign when you speak.
1) Always go TO somewhere Anytime you use a version of the verb IR [‘EAR’: to go] you need to add ‘a’ (to). Voy a la playa (I go/I´m going TO the beach) or for the future tense: vamos a comprar un coche mañana (we´re going TO buy a car tomorrow). In the past: Ayer fuimos al banco (yesterday we went to the bank: a + el = al).
2) Talk OF (not about) things
¿De qué hablan ustedes? (of what talk you? We´d say: ‘what
do you talk about?’) Hablamos de muchas cosas (we talk of many things) or anoche, hablamos de la cultura aquí (last night we talked about the culture here). You can see that the ‘we’ verb endings are the same present and past for regular ‘action words’ ending in –AR and –IR.
3) Play AT games (but not instruments)
Jugar [hoo-GAR: to play] is a stem-changing verb, so we´d say ‘juego al fútbol/ténis/ golf’ (I play AT THE football etc), or me gusta jugar a las cartas (I like to play cards). However, you TOCAR (touch) an instrument: ¿Qué instrumento tocas? (what instrument do you play?) Pues, toco la guitarra (well, I play the guitar).
4) Love using ‘THE’
When you talk about likes and dislikes, always use ‘the’ with things: me gusta
el vino rosado (I like the rosé wine) or no me gustan las cucas (I don´t like the cockroaches; lit: ‘they no please me the roaches’). Remember also to say ‘the week past’ or ‘the month next’ NOT ‘last week’: la semana pasada/el mes próximo. In addition, things and people in general are referred to with ‘the’: La gente es amable (people are nice); el chocolate tiene mucha grasa (chocolate has a lot of fat).
5) The teeth, the hair…
Body parts are also usually referred to with THE (see lesson 31). So instead of saying ‘my legs hurt’ you´d say: they hurt me the legs: Me duelen las piernas. Similarly: ‘give me your hand!’ would be Dame [dahmeh] la mano and you´d normally hear: Necesito lavarme el pelo (I need to wash me the hair).
6) Don’t translate word-for-word Original verbs are two words in English (to eat, to work) but one word in Spanish: comer, trabajar [com-AIR, tra-bahHAR]. In Spanish they can only end in –AR, -ER or –IR. After a preposition, we use ‘ing’ in English, but the full verb in Spanish. For example: Antes de bailar (before dancing), hablé de dejar mi trabajo (I spoke of leaving my job) porque sueño con viajar (because I dream of travelling – lit: I dream with to travel). Similarly, in English I hate cleaning, but in Spanish I hate to clean: odio limpiar. English people use ‘ing’ for the future (tonight I’m not going out) – but not in Spanish: esta
noche, no salgo (tonight, I no go out) because ‘tomorrow I work’: mañana trabajo.
7) Adjectives: ANTE or ADO?
Adjectives that end in ‘ing’ in English often have ‘ante’ at the end in Spanish and go with the verb SER (to be; for inherent characteristics): fascinating (fascinante), exciting (excitante or emocionante); irritating (irritante) and frustrating (frustrante). However, what we feel often ends in ‘ed’ (temporary emotions, with ESTAR in Spanish): excited (emocionado/a), irritated (irritado/a), frustrated (frustrado/a), and fascinated (fascinado/a). E.g: Es fascinante conocer a

8) Adverbs: Just add ‘mente’
Many adjectives look like English, but are pronounced very differently: posible, probable, terrible, usual, normal [poh-SEE-bleh, proh-BAH-bleh, ter-REE-bleh, ooh-soo-AL, nor-MAL]. To form the adverb, add mente: so ‘possibly’ is posiblemente [posible-MEN-teh], also probablemente, usualmente etc. If the adjective ends in ‘o’, change it to an ‘a’ first: rápido (quick) but rápidamente (quickly).

Preparar el majado. En un mortero picar los ajos y el perejil, añadir las almendras y los piñones, la pizca de nuez moscada y machacar bien el conjunto con la mano de mortero. Verter el vaso de vino y mezclar hasta obtener un caldo. Reservar. Coloca los trozos de cordero en una fuente de horno, salar y untarlos con aceite. Regar con el zumo de limón. Verter el vaso de vino blanco y añadir el laurel. Poner al horno, a fuego muy suave, durante una hora y media o dos horas hasta que esté tierno. Dar la vuelta a la carne. Añadir el majado al guiso y dejar cocer 20 minutos más. Se puede servir con papar y vegetales. Fácil y muy rico

Pour a glass of wine and stir until you get a broth like mix. Put to one side. Place the lamb chops in a baking dish, add salt and smear with oil. Drizzle with lemon juice. Pour a glass of white wine and add the bay leaves. Bake at low heat for an hour and a half to two hours until tender. Turn the meat. Add the paste to the stew and let it cook for a further 20 minutes. Serve with potatoes and vegetables. Easy and yummy

Another way to build an excellent selection of tools is to get together with a friend – I’ll buy the electric drill, you buy the jigsaw. While borrowing money is so out of fashion, neighbours are more willing than ever to help each other out. Information technology is causing ecologists endless headaches - technology is advancing so fast, that your new mobile was probably obsolete by the time you had given the battery its first charge. This means that many products are only designed to last a year, maximum two, which leaves us with
a mountain of broken and obsolete gadgets which grows by the day. The first issue to tackle is: do you really need it? Chances are you don’t, unless you took your mobile swimming, or spilt coke all over your laptop (interestingly, technology is not yet sufficiently advanced to survive the dangers of daily use). Your personal computer can often be updated, or just given a thorough spring clean by a professional, giving it a bit more time before being written off as medieval. Home printers are terrible for waste – manufacturers are now designing ink cartridges that cannot be refilled, obliging consumers to throw away more plastic than is entirely necessary. And not only that, but have you ever bought a printer and hardly used it, only to find it suddenly stops working for no apparent reason? Rumours get started by such experiences... s l r i G y k Chee w Much loved pop act The Cheeky Girls are on their way to Gran Canaria to appear at Sparkles Showbar in Playa del Inglés! Sparkles showbar have had a variety of well known acts perform at their venue over the last two years including 80s sensations Toyah Wilcox and Sonja, and more recently the controversial Jo O’Meara of S-Club7 fame. Sparkles will continue to book well known acts to perform two or three times a year on Gran Canaria, in their own words “to give something back to the island that has given them so much”. What’s more, as with all Sparkles shows, The Cheeky Girls event will be completely free to attend, the only rule being that if you are in the bar you mustn’t be without a drink. It promises to be a well attended event so get their very early if you hope to find a seat, though we suspect you’ll be up and dancing in no time with these two twin good time girls. Twin sisters Gabriela and Monica Irimia, from Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania, Romania, live in Britain. They achieved success in the

charts with four top ten hits between 2002 and 2004. They are best known for their debut single, “Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)”, which has sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide. Gabriela and Monica were born on 31 October 1982 to Doru and Margit Irimia. Gabriela is older by 10 minutes. Their early life in Romania consisted of studying gymnastics and ballet and touring with the Hungarian National Opera. Moving to the United Kingdom with their mother in 2002, the girls shot to fame as the Cheeky Girls after auditioning on the British TV shows, Channel 4’s Model Behaviour and more importantly Popstars: The Rivals. Following two appearances on the show with their audition which had judges Pete Waterman and Louis Walsh not knowing what to say, various record companies approached the Granada Television Press Office which helped them to secure them a deal with the Multiply label part of Telstar Records. Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) was swiftly recorded
and released in the first week in December. Entering the chart at number two, the single remained in the top five for five consecutive weeks – four of them at number two. In the week before Christmas this was one of three singles from the Popstars: The Rivals show to occupy the Top 3, One True Voice and Girls Aloud held the other two positions. This was quickly followed up with two more top three hits, “Take Your Shoes Off” and “(Hooray, Hooray!) It’s a Cheeky Holiday!”. Their style of music is primarily disco-pop, aimed at the pre-teen market. Most of their songs are written by their mother, who also acts as their manager. In January 2004, their first single, “The Cheeky Song (Touch my Bum)” was voted the worst pop record of all time in a Channel 4 poll. When their record company Multiply went into liquidation in 2004, the girls turned down several deals from other companies and decided to launch their own label XBN. From 2004, they began to appear regularly in other media such as television
appearances on Brainiac and The Weakest Link and opening the studios of a new local radio station Big L 1395, along with Cliff Richard. The Cheeky Girls are also involved in a lot of charity work and are very keen supporters of the UK Children’s Charity ChildLine. In September 2009, the girls released their Cheeky Girls make-up range, aimed at the young teen market. In January 2010, Gabriela and Monica auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent under the name Cheeky Girls and Darius. The trio performed a Bollywood dance at the Hammersmith Apollo, London. The judges reacted favourably and they were voted through to continue in the competition. However, they did not make it to the Semi-Finals. In November 2010, Gabriela and Monica appeared on the Celebrity edition of Channel 4 reality programme Coach Trip two days before the series’ end. British singer George Michael was admitted today in the university hospital (AKH) in Vienna for possible pneumonia, reported the ORF public television. His health is much worse than was thought before last Monday had to cancel his planned concert in Vienna, and also suffers from heart problems, explained the station. Speaking to news agency APA, an AKH spokesman would not confirm nor deny that, but George Michael, 48, is hospitalized. Annie Lennox HIV appeal to MPs Singer Annie Lennox spoke at Parliament about tackling the global HIV epidemic as part of World Aids Day. The former Eurythmics star is a leading campaigner for women’s rights and Aids prevention. Annie Lennox said the disease needs to be seen differently by people. “I think stigma is everywhere and I think that’s one of the biggest challenges anyone has to face when it comes to HIV whether it’s in a developing country or whether it is here,” Lennox said. “I’ve met people here who are HIV positive who can’t disclose their status because they are
too afraid of the impact it will have.” In Westminster, she hoped to use her knowledge as a UN Aids ambassador to call for greater action from governments around the world to try and reduce the number of people infected by the fatal disease. “At the moment we have had 33 million people die because of Aids,” Lennox told Sky. “The scientific discoveries are proving that we can actually make a huge difference if people can get access to treatment.” More on KISSFMLive.com

Isadora The humans have decided to move to a bigger place and selected a locale that will not accept pets, no matter how quiet and perfectly behaved. Circumstances such as they are, the humans are giving these precious sweetie pies the old heave ho! Ergo, Tiana and Isadora are in desperate need of grace and graciousness. Since they have developed into bosom buddies, the ideal situation would be one home for both. The advantage for the dogs is obvious: The abandonment
by their humans is softened by not simultaneously losing each other. The advantage for the adopting family is multifold: They will entertain each other when the humans are out and about; at four kilos each, even two eat like birds; they walk on lead together with elegance, but it is only one walk for the human. These are loving, quite, wonderfully behaved little girls that are guaranteed to break your heart given the opportunity of a personal interview.

A TARA vet commented, “My word, his stride and posture are what would be expected from a moon walker - a ballerina sans the trappings of gravity.” So there you have it, Walker has a name. He is Siamese stunning, tantalising turquoise eyes, full of the majesty of feline magnum mysterium. But despite all these physical attributes, the young boy hasn‛t lost his head. Walker is a dandy - a delight to behold. He plays, purs, and pads about with personality plus. He was dumped (a.k.a., not well-cared for), but is not bitter. His determined dream is nothing more than to be a beloved family pet.

Clearly TARA receives many abandoned dogs that are pure heart melters. Tiny Tin Tin, all 4 kilos of him, is just such a pooch. Only just now a year old, triple T survived a stroke that affected the left side of his body and blinded him in one eye. But he doesn‛t feel in the least bit sorry for himself. Tin Tin thinks these unique traits make him special, and TARA couldn‛t agree more. This wonderful guy needs a wonderful human that will take full advantage of all Tiny Tin Tin‛s attributes. (P.S. Tin Tin enjoys the company of other dogs - and they seem to love him!)

This is the third in my series on Super Food Supplements – natural supplements that are considered to be whole foods, providing most of everything that the human body needs from the day we are born to the day that we die!
So What Is Spirulina? Spirulina has a very long history – references have been found as far back as the 9th Century! It is made from blue-green algae (or bacteria) that was first cultivated in the 1970´s at Lake Texcoco. The main producers are now in USA, Thailand, India, Taiwan, China, Pakistan, Burma and Chile. If put under a microscope, it appears as a long, thin bluegreen spiral thread. And it has a taste similar to seaweed.
The Nutritional Benefits Spirulina is very high in protein (about 60%) – essential for cell growth and regeneration - and provides a much better source of complete proteins for vegetarians than would be found in legumes and other typical plant proteins. It is also an excellent source of chlorophyll, fatty and nucleic acids and lipids. It contains
complex carbohydrates, iron, vitamins A, K and the B Complex. Every 10 grams of Spirulina can supply up to 70% of the minimum daily requirement for iron, and about three times the minimum for Vitamin A, B Complex, D and K. By itself, Spirulina does not contain Vitamin C, and it is suggested that it is not the best source of Vitamin B12. Spirulina is the richest beta carotene food, and works in our body to enhance antioxidant protection. Human and animal research has indicated that it helps prevent heart disease, reduces the risk of strokes, and reverses agerelated decline in memory. It has a positive effect on blood sugars by helping to correct abnormal levels of the sugar fructose within the body. It reduces inflammation and delays the onset of motor symptoms and disease. Spirulina has also been found to inhibit HIV replication. It stimulates beneficial flora – bifidobacteria – and suppresses bad bacteria like e-coli and candida yeast, thereby promoting a healthy digestion and acts as a natural cleanser by eliminating
mercury and other deadly toxins. NASA and the European Space Agency have both proposed the cultivation of Spirulina to support astronauts involved in long term space missions. Its high digestibility means it fights malnutrition in impoverished communities when the human body has lots its ability to absorb normal forms of food. I guess the only downside of all of the super food supplements is that they are more expensive, ounce for ounce, that our more typical food sources, but because of their high levels of potency in the good stuff, they are always worth considering. So if the question was asked “What do you want for Christmas?” and if an answer were to be given, full of Christmas Spirit, “Peace on earth, good will to all men... and women... and animals. And what about ourselves? If we wish to experience a Christmas full of Love and Peace and Joy then firstly we need to take on the role of Santa, who brings these abundant gifts to ourselves, firstly and foremost. If we wish more peace of mind and a break from the daily grind, or from the possible monotony of day-to-day life, then we
need to take responsibility for our own well being. At Christmas, we usually expect presents from others and yet on occasion those gifts aren’t really to our liking... that jumper that just doesn’t fit... or that shirt which we know we’ll never wear and will probably end up being given to the first charity shop to hand as soon as the festive season is over. So instead, this year, why not choose to do something radically different for yourself, and make a list of what you want for Christmas, only this list mustn’t contain anything material at all. Instead think about all the lovely things that you would wish for yourself and your loved ones. Those things for yourself are yours for the claiming, but first of all you need to identify, clearly, what those things are before you can claim them, for instance can you imagine how far it would get you to go to the lost & found, say for example on the London Underground, and say to the person working there “I’m here to claim what’s
mine” and when they ask you what exactly you wish to claim, then saying to them “well I don’t know, do I?” I somehow think they might think such a person had lost their marbles, don’t you? Tell Santa exactly what you want, and don’t spare the reindeer! Make the list a kind one, full of all the good stuff, and then have a good read of that list and ask yourself the question “What can I do to allow this list full of Christmas Bliss to come true?” We all have a responsibility, and a Joyful one, to rise above and out of the every day patterns that we may have found ourselves in for the previous year, and to grant ourselves permission to have a really wonderful Christmas, to make it really special, in a way that sets a standard that we can then build upon for the new year to come. Now that’s the kind of list which Santa loves to get, because when making these kinds of dreams come true he can really weave his magic in the True Spirit of Christmas.

Because we are downsizing our house, I have recently been “having a clear out”. What a hoarder of memorabilia I have become over the years. It has blessed my socks off to sit down and read old letters, listen to archaic cassettes, watch ancient videos, look through precious photo albums and immerse myself in my all-time ( and not to be ‘downsized’) favourite books. In the family I am generally known as a bit of a nostalgia freak (geek?). My children once sent me a Birthday Card addressed to ‘ Mrs Memory, Sentimental View, Golden Oldie Lane, off Reminiscence Road , Nostalgia Land’ . How well they know me. I am more than happy to live with the tags – after all, I know I have accumulated quite a bit of past - remembering it is the hard bit! So without getting too maudlin, if I wish to walk down my now rather long memory lane to visit what has become some sizeable acreage on my very own ‘Nostalgia Pasture’ then what is there - apart from forgetting where I have left my Zimmer-frame, - to stop me? Among the articles I found during my clearout was an item that we in my family call “a make-you -better box”. When one of us was ill, someone in the family would cover an old shoe box in pretty wall paper. It would become a box of delights- filled with all sorts of stuff- sweets, poems, gobstoppers,( to be shared if you really want to get better!) games and trinkets –things which, whoever was putting it all together thought would help the person get well more quickly. Of course some memories can also make us sad. I found some of the latter along the way too; that’s life I guess. But it can be a tonic just to dip back into the past, not to dwell for too long, but just to linger at those places that bring thoughts of special, often simple times; times of happiness high hopes and love...it may be something that happened just yesterday or many moons ago... whatever. Downsizing could have been a nightmare, but instead it turned out to be a rather treasured time ,letting nostalgia loose and having
a wallow in it was a truly therapeutic experience. A selfindulgent jaunt you may say? Why yes, but it’s still a journey I would thoroughly recommend. And to all the folk out there who are encouragers- those who have contributed to making another’s life so joyful and meaningful... it’s not over yet so keep practising - because all our todays and tomorrows will eventually become yesterdays. Looking back may we all find precious times and precious people in our lives for which we are eternally grateful, and to whom we can genuinely say ....

GALDAR, GRAN CANARIA, SPAIN The world’s best bodyboarders from 21 countries are set to compete in the North West of Gran Canaria From November 28, 2011 in the world’s biggest bodyboarding team event ever. Everything started in Galdar with a Nations´flag Parade and the “Sands of the World” Ceremony. Featuring bodyboarding´s finest athletes from 21 countries, this will be a first for Gran Canaria. The event will be held over two locations, La Guancha and El Frontón. All eyes, however, will be on the infamous Fronton as we hope to see conditions working for this spectacular wave that, believe it our not, rivals Hawaii and Tahiti for size and sheer power. The teams, already on-site here in Galdar and ready to compete, are: Portugal, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Morocco, South Africa, Cape Verde, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Argentina, Canada, Australia, Japan and the host, Spain. “We have a good team and I’m really happy to be part of this event,” said 2010 IBA World Champion, Amaury Lavernhe (REU), who has been training on-site for the
last few days. “I don’t think I’m a favorite, since there are so many great riders here like Yeray Martinez (SPA), Diego Cabrera (SPA), Jarred Houston (RSA) and Pierre Louis Costes (FRA) among others. We have a good team and the waves are perfect, so I’m stoked. I would like to thank all Canary locals
for sharing this amazing spot with us.” The event opened with a country by country flag ceremony as each team carried their colours through the square of Santiago de los Caballeros. The streets were lined with local Canarians to welcome the athletes from five continents, and of course support the Spanish side. The procession
started from the tournament headquarters, located in the famous house of Captain Quesada at about 11.30 am and accumulated in a colorful sea of flags of 24 countries. The march eventually stopped at the stage where the official opening ceremony began where Teodoro Sosa the mayor of the district, Francisco Ortiz, coordinator of sport council and Carlos Garcia, president of the Spanish Federation of Surf all spoke. The “Sand of the World” ceremony then took place, a poignant mixing of sands from beaches of all competing countries, planned to symbolise the unity of all competing nations. This event brought our crowd to an emotional cheer, particularly when Spain added their sand. This is the 12th time for the ISA to crown a World Bodyboard Champion. First ISA Gold Medalist of the discipline was USA’s Chris Cunninghan, crowned in Puerto Rico, 1988. This is, however, the first bodyboard only team-event in history, with nations from all over the world, and with the Team Trophy as the top prize.

Lucia dog i Syrakusa, omkring år 304. Hon stacks ihjäl med ett svärd, efter att ett försök att bränna henne levande misslyckades. Detta var straffet för att hon skänkt värdeföremål till fattiga kristna. Legenden om helgonet Lucia finns att läsa i Martyrologium Hieronymianum. Enligt en annan sägen, tillkommen senare, stack Lucia ut sina ögon och serverade dem på ett fat till den unge man som förälskat sig i dem. Mannen blev kristen och Lucia fick nya ögon av Gud, vackrare än de ursprungliga. Lucia har betraktats som ljusets eller visdomens urbild och är också ögonläkarnas skyddshelgon. Förr i tiden ansåg man i Norge och Sverige att natten till den 13:e december var årets längsta natt. Detta synsätt ändrades radikalt 1753, då den gregorianska tideräkningen infördes. Men, än idag lever föreställningen kvar att Lucia kommer med det efterlängtade ljuset, i den annars så mörka vintern. I drygt 1700 år har legenden om Lucia hållits vid liv. Firandet är mest utbrett i Norden, Sicilien och Tyskland. Men, vi ska inte glömma Gran Canaria. I staden Santa Lucia, pågår festligheter hela dagen. I kyrkan finns en staty av helgonet. Svenska Luleå är vänort med Santa Lucia, varför en svensk lucia finns med i firandet.
Vad att se och göra på Gran Canaria

Santa Lucia ligger vackert på knappt 700 meters höjd. Det är ett jordbruksområde med framför allt fruktodlingar. Där tillverkas också en lokal likör som kallas mejunje, vilken består av citron, rom och honung. Två stora festligheter avlöser varandra under december månad. Först Lucia, sedan söndagen därpå Fiesta del Labrador. Till denna marknad och byfest kommer folk från hela ön. Här ges smakprov på lokala produkter, det blir boskaps- och hantverksutställning.
Även utan speciella arrangemang är Santa Lucia värt ett besök. Kyrkan, i vitt och grått, från 1898, ligger högt och utmed vägen som delar staden på mitten. Ett vackert torg, barer med underbar utsikt, vandringsleder, charmiga gränder. Allt värt att se och uppleva. Dessutom finns ett museum som heter Museo del Castillo de la Fortaleza och är byggt så det liknar en gammal borg. Det är inte stort, men rymmer lite av det mesta. Högst upp och längst in finns ett ”svensk” rum. Mängder med luciakronor, gamla annonsblad från veckotidningar med luciakandidater och annat som förknippas med traditionellt svenskt luciafirande finns att beskåda.

Mondoblog såg till att ta några av Sveriges största bloggare till Gran Canaria där de fick uppleva en del av vad den vackra ön har att erbjuda. Serien visades på Aftonbladets web-tv och hade över en miljon tittare. Tittarna fick följa Kissie (Alexandra Nilsson), Jackie Ferm, Dennis M, Rebecca Sahlin och Marie Plosjö i 10 avsnitt och succén gjorde att turisterna ökade med Gran Canaria som destination. Totalt har över 5,5 miljoner unika besökare tittat in på mondoblog sedan starten 2010 och portalen växer sig ständigt större. Medlemmarna har en god möjlighet att göra sig sedda med sina personliga bloggar. australiensisk undersökning gjord på 10,000 män att mat skänker det manliga könet mer njutning än sex! Männen ombads att rangordna njutningsfulla saker, och överst på deras lista hamnade maten. Sex kom först på tredje plats. Så glöm raffsetet på lördagar tjejer, bred er käresta en macka istället!

❙ Mjölk – nej tack!
Om du hör till dem som dricker ett glas mjölk till maten, är du ett undantag. En undersökning från Mjölkfrämjandet visar att var tredje svensk kvinna knappt dricker mjölk alls. I åldersgruppen 55-64 har en av fyra inte druckit mjölk på fem år. De flesta föredrar vatten, framför allt när man vill gå ner i vikt.

Grunden för ett psykiskt välbefinnande är ett fysiskt välbefinnande. Kanske lätt att påstå för en som idrottat i stort sett i hela sitt liv och därför alltid mått bra. Men alla, oavsett ålder, kan förbättra sin fysiska status, med ganska enkla medel. Nästan alla som bestämt sig för att börja träna gör emellertid ett klassiskt misstag. Man går ut och springer allt vad man orkar, så länge man orkar. En hemsk upplevelse som
skrämmer och gör att det kanske bara blir en gång och aldrig mer. Acceptera istället verkligheten; du är otränad, du har dålig kondition, dina muskler börjar bli förslappade. Börjar du därifrån har du stora chanser att lyckas med din ”restaurering”. Tänk också på att vid lågintensiv aktivitet använder kroppen fett som bränsle. Promenad eller lätt jogging innebär alltså att du tär på den där förargliga valken ovanför
byxlinningen, samtidigt som du förbättrar din kondition. På semestern har du världens chans att komma igång, kanske framför allt på Gran Canaria. Det är ingen slump att min fru och jag, som gamla långdistanslöpare, valde att köpa lägenhet på GC. Oavsett var du bor på ön så finns det fina strandpromenader, gångoch cykelvägar och stigar. I Puerto Rico till exempel finns strandpromenaden bort mot Amadores. En
perfekt morgonpromenad/ joggingtur! Och framför allt, du är anonym, du riskerar inga hånfulla leenden eller kommentarer från grannar eller bekanta. Man är van, du blir accepterad, direkt, även om du fysiologiskt är så långt ifrån en trådsmal maratonlöpare man kan komma. Den enda utrustning du behöver är ett par bra skor. Gärna stadiga s k walkingskor. Har du inga sådana kan du köpa på plats. Priser, fabrikat och kvalitet
är ungefär desamma som Sverige. Ta chansen att göra din semester till en nystart för ditt nya och bättre liv. Börja dagen med en långpromenad, helst en timme. Så småningom kanske du börjar jogga och springa så smått. Men låt kroppen få den tid som behövs. Du blir troligtvis inte elitidrottare, men jag garanterar, du kommer att må oerhört mycket bättre! ❏ Ulf Rönning
att jobbet är den absolut roligaste platsen. Detta visar en undersökning av det svenska folkets skrattvanor. De som skrattar allra mest på jobbet är 60-talisterna. Bara 80-talisterna tycker att fester är roligare än jobbet. Här kan tilläggas att det är vetenskapligt bevisat att ett gott skratt faktiskt förlänger livet. Två separata amerikanska studier visar att skrattet skyddar hjärtat och sänker blodtrycket . Så vår arbetsplats kan faktiskt vara nyttig för vår hälsa!
❙...men jobba inte över! Våra finska grannar drar, utifrån en studie, slutsatsen att övertid och för långa arbetsdagar kan skada hjärnans funktioner. Människor som ofta jobbar över kan få sämre ordförråd och slutledningsförmåga. Forskarna påvisar även att det kan finnas ett samband mellan övertidsarbete och demens.

Gran Canaria lyckades avgå med segern i en livsviktig match för att ta sig upp ifrån nedflyttningsplatserna. Detta mot ett långt ifrån lätt motstånd, inte mindre än Bilbao Basket – förra säsongens finalist. Återigen gjorde Haynes en mycket bra match, med sammanlagt 15 poäng. Av alla tvåpoängskasten gick

inte mindre än 83 procent rakt i korgen, ett strålande resultat. Den första kvarten var jämn och taktiskt tillknäppt. Tack vare Banic tog besökarna kommandot och ledde efter tio minuter med fyra poäng. I den andra kvarten förbättrades hemmalagets spel betydligt, både under korgen samt från

trepoängslinjen. I halvtid var ställningen 32-31 till kanarierna. När den tredje kvarten började drog hemmalaget ifrån. Beirán och Rey kom ut efter vilan och tryckte gasen i botten. Hade det inte varit för bortalagets Mumbrú och Grimau hade Gran Canaria fått ett närmast
ointagligt försprång. I den fjärde kvarten ledde det gula hemmalaget med 15 poäng, tills en inspirerad Mumbrú tog kommandot och förde sitt lag mot en trepoängsskillnad. Matchen avgjordes till Gran Canarias fördel tack vare bättre utdelning på straffkasten, som avslutade en till sist jämn match.

Efter 2-0 var nerverna borta och Recreativo spelade ut Las Palmas. När kanarierna verkade vara ute för räkning förde ett tursamt mål dem tillbaka in i matchbilden. Hemmalaget fortsatte dock att dominera, med gott om målchanser framförallt på frisparkar och hörnor. Till slut lyckades de göra 3-1 och fick gå till halvtidsvila med ett relativt lugn. I andra halvlek gjorde UD Las Palmas ett trippelbyte som tillförde bortalaget ny energi. Besökarnas andra mål kom som ett brev på posten och man kunde mycket väl fått till en kvittering med lite tur. Detta gjorde att Recreativo vaknade till liv, och man tryckte hem Las Palmas till sin egen planhalva. På tilläggstid, i den 92 minuten, kom det definitiva 4-2 upp på resultattavlan.

Xerez
November har varit en tung månad för UD Las Palmas. I hemmamatchen mot Xerez togs den första poängen efter förlusterna mot Gimnástic och Soria. Matchen var inte särskilt underhållande för åskådarna som tagit sig till Estadio de Gran Canaria. I synnerhet inte första halvleken. Bortalaget backade hem, äventyrade sig sällan till att attackera hemmalagets målområde. Las Palmas saknade den nödvändiga kreativiteten och fantasin som krävs för att dyrka upp ett dylikt försvarsspel. Andra halvlek var aningen mer levande, och båda lagen hade tillfällen att ta hem de tre poängen som stod på spel. Dock saknades den avgörande udden, och matchen slutade med ett under omständigheterna rättvist, oavgjort resultat som var till störst tillfredsställelse för Xerez.

❙ Nybygge i Las Palmas
Den gamla fotbollsstadion Estadio Insular ska förvandlas till en idrottspark med bassäng, gym och paddelbanor. Därtill ett shoppingcenter med gott om parkeringsplatser. Hittills är allt på idéstadiet, men en arkitekttävling ska utlysas och det vinnande förslaget får en budget om 15 - 20 miljoner €. Byggstart är planerad till 2012 och komplexet ska vara färdigt ett år senare.
❙ Gran Canaria och ❙ Olja utanför tysk fotboll Kanarieöarna Tarp och Oeversee är två små byar nära gränsen till Danmark, med färre än 5.000 invånare vardera. De har ett gemensamt fotbollslag, FC Tarp – Oeversee, som spelar i division III. Det egendomliga är att spelarnas tröjor pryds av en logga med ”Gran Canaria”. Orsaken är att klubben saknar officiell sponsor och dess tyska ordförande är gift med en kvinna från Gran Canaria, som tycker detta är ett passande sätt att hedra sin frus gamla hemland.
En oljefyndighet har hittats ca 50 km från Fuerteventura och Lanzarote. Borrningslicensen har getts till ett australiensiskt företag, Tangers Petrol Ltd, som enligt avtalet ska betala 25 procent av vinsten till Marocko. Borrningen ska påbörjas nästa år. Ett kanariskt miljöparti, Equo, har kritiserat den spanska regeringens passivitet vid tillståndsgivningen, då de anser att risken för skada på den unika miljön i ögruppen är stor.

Gran Canaria 2014
Att döma av hur säsongen börjat verkar det som om Gran Canaria 2014 kommer att ha svårt att lägga beslag på den önskade slutspelsplatsen. Ljuspunkten är att det fortfarande är många matcher kvar att spela, men hoppet minskar efter varje möte. Endast två segrar av sju möjliga, är facit så här långt. Laget verkar ha svårt att hålla koncentrationen under de 40 nödvändiga minuterna . Denna gång var det Madridlaget Fuenlabrada som stod för motståndet. De första två tiominuters
perioderna var mycket jämna, men i halvtid hade kanarierna en tvåpoängsledning. När matchen återupptogs visade Fuenlabrada upp ett mycket intensivt försvarsspel. Gran Canaria saknade idéer och envisades med trepoängsskott, vilka blev resultatlösa. Den tredje perioden slutade 20-9, och Gran Canaria var mentalt besegrade. I den sista perioden behövde Madridlaget inte överanstränga sig för att motstå kanariernas halvhjärtade försök att komma ikapp.
