General Strike 29-M

The CCOO Confederal Council and the UGT Confederal Committee, the highest official body between the unions, have unanimously approved the call for a general strike against labour reforms for 29th March. The timing, on Thursday, March 29th, coincides with the general strike called by nationalist unions in the Basque Country and Navarre against labour reforms and the day prior to the submission of the State Budget for 2012. The general secretaries of CCOO and UGT, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo and Candido Mendez, will present a press conference to report the reasons that led them to go on strike. Unions consider the labour reforms unilaterally approved by the PP Government as “the most regressive” reforms for the rights of workers since their launch and have been fighting it in the streets with demonstrations, rallies and other protests. The trade unions are trying to stop the reforms before the government has made that decision final. To do this, in addition to the demonstrations in the streets, the unions have repeatedly asked the Government for negotiations over those aspects of reform that are seen as most harmful to workers. …Read More on TheCanaryNews.com…

Demonstrations called on Sunday

The CCOO and UGT have called for demonstrations to follow on Sunday in the 60 main Spanish cities to protest against labour reforms and cuts in government spending. This they say will serve to measure the response of citizens to the announcement of the unions. Demonstrations on Sundays are part of a growing mobilization strategy launched in February by unions to force the government to change the labour reforms, and as the centre piece there will be a march through Madrid to be attended by the Secretaries General of the CCOO and UGT, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo and Candido Mendez. The unions took the first steps in this demo strategy on Sunday 19th February, with marches in 57 Spanish cities that achieved massive support of citizens under the slogan ‘No to labour reform. Unfair, Unnecessary and Ineffective‘

Oil will not affect British tourism The British ambassador to Spain makes his third official visit to the Canaries

Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain made his third official visit to The Canary Islands last week, to formally present The British Consul, Maria Leng over cocktails at the Real Club Nautico in Las Palmas. Present were dignitaries from many of the official institutions of Las Palmas including senior representatives of the police, Guardia Civil and armed forces as well as the local government and most of the other consular representatives based in Las Palmas from as far afield as

Italy, Sweeden, Korea, Finland and Ireland among many other notables. Around 10 members of the British community were also invited to attend, representing much of the charitable and voluntary work conducted here as well as members of the clergy. Maria Leng, resplendent in navy blue and whose mother was also present, played special tribute to her consular staff and those voluntary organisations who are invaluable in offering assistance to British nationals residing here in the Canary Islands. She also recognised

the role of the English speaking press in communicating information on behalf of the consulate and in driving efforts for further integration of the various communities present on these islands. His Excellency Giles Paxman, expressed extreme confidence in his Consul to The Canary Islands, whom he said had done a great job in her first year. He spoke of the long and important relationship between Great Britain and the archipelago and looked forward to ever strengthening ties in both trade and tourism. Asked about his opinions on oil

exploration and its effect on tourism, he commented that he felt there would be little impact on British tourists’ decisions to visit, saying “in the UK we have experience with oil exploration and I think that the wells would be quite far from the coast. People would not see them. I do not think that the exploration would be an obstacle to the arrival of British tourists.” He pointed instead to the long history of the islands, their culture and their fortuitous weather as well as the high quality of food and services offered in The Canary Islands as being the main reason why

more than 3.5million British tourists chose to come here last year. He also spoke of the necessity of each country needing to put “public finances in order” and with regards to public protests in Spain said that as standard the embassy advised that all British nationals avoid any large scale demonstrations, though he refused to be drawn on the subjects of the Euro or any expectations of civil unrest, saying only that the European currency was integral to British trade. ABTA Concerns

Tour Operators wrote recently to Minister Soria warning of “potential impact” to public opinion regarding oil explorations. British tour operators have addressed a letter to the Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, who is himself a Canary Islander, to express their “deep concern” about the public reaction to Repsol’s plans to drill for oil in the waters near the islands.

ABTA, a powerful association of tourism enterprises, in which all tour operators are included as part of the British Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) has expressed alarm at the “potential impact that this work [by Repsol] could have on tourism, local people, the environment and marine life.” The letter addressed to Minister Soria was revealed on Sunday by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. In fact, ABTA said in the

text, that they were first informed “by representatives of President of the Council” based on the impetus given to surveys by the Council of Ministers on Friday of last week. The letter continues by saying “We ask urgently and ABTA calls for the minister to provide us with a summary of the current state of exploration work, which includes the timing and geographical location.” These comments were aimed directly to Soria,

explaining that the purpose of their request is “to inform partners of the situation.” In a reference to the tour operators they represent. In addition, Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, asked that Soria keeps in mind that the Canaries “are one of the key destinations for both the UK and European travel markets” and said that they believe that “oil exploration and extraction may have potential to significantly damage tourism in the region”.

SPAR in Gran Canaria keep on growing!

SPAR Gran Canaria is showing fantastic growth, with four new stores opening on the island in just the past year. This is all the more incredible considering the economic situation in Spain and that tourism, a particularly important revenue source for the Canary Islands, had, until recently, been dropping considerably. There are now new stores in Sardina del Sur at Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Vegueta and Tafira Baja in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tejeda, joining the 150 existing stores already on the island - meaning there are now SPAR stores throughout 20 of Gran Canaria’s 21 municipalities.

Looking ahead, five new stores are set to open in 2012. Already this year, SPAR Tejeda opened its doors in January, to an audience of guests including Francisco Perera, the mayor of Tejeda, and Dámaso Arencibia, mayor of Valleseco. The new SPAR store meets a much needed requirement in a town at the highest point of the island, being the only supermarket where local residents can do their shopping. This is the second store for owners Josefa Viera and Manuel García & Sons, who are committed to employing local people. SPAR Tejeda covers 130 m2 in the centre of town, offering a wide

Adolfo Santana Suárez Director de Marketing e Imagen Grupo Spar Mogán

range of brands and food products. Spar Mogán, celebrating their 20th year, also continue to provide excellent services across the south of Gran Canaria, including their innovative and award winning in-store information system, which has been in operation over the last few years, and can be seen in the main Arguineguin store. This extraordinary screen based advertising medium allows Spar Mogán and their other advertisers to communicate about their products and latest offers to the more than 45,000 shoppers reported to use that one store alone. Founded in 1991, as Supermercados Mogán, they initially opened a small family shop in the village of Mogán. The following year they opened a supermarket and, in 1994, entered Groupo SPAR. Since then they have enjoyed huge growth opening new stores almost every year of operation to currently operate more than 20 from Arguineguin to Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogán and many places between.

This figure is far from the market share achieved by other Spanish regions with economies similar to the Islands. “In the Balearic Islands they have achieved more than 30% in local consumption,” says Juan Antonio León, CEO of Industry of the Department of Employment, Industry and Commerce of the Canary Islands. Food and beverages is the most profitable sector on the Islands. “More than 90% of consumers recognise and positively value Canaries brands and food products manufactured on our land and so this sector is the strongest for direct consumption in the Archipelago,” says Eugenio Castillo, president of the Industrial de Canarias (Asinca). However, stiff competition from large grocery chains

hinders the development of products produced in the Canary Islands. “Domestic firms producing here find it difficult to bring their products to market cheaper

than those mass imported from the Peninsula, because [producers there] operate on the economies of scale, producing a lot in one spot and then distributing it throughout the country, and we can not compete against that,” says Sergio Arencibia, director of

Emicela. The cost of insularity for our industries is that each year The Canaries must invest 6,000 million euros in transport, maintaining higher reserves, imports, indirect costs, etc.. “And our insularity is twofold because it is with the mainland and between the islands,” said Castillo. The Canary News backs all ideas that will help these islands become more self sufficient and less reliant on unnecessary imports from overseas. We live in a veritable Paradise with the capability to grow, produce and supply a huge proportion of our consumer needs directly from within our island economies. We are making a call for all readers here to support products Made in The Canaries, Made in Paradise! Read More on TheCanaryNews.com

S Á Y U C O T E M O C S U H DANCE WIT

The Gelabert-Azzopardi dance company visit Cuyás for a second time. Spanish dancer and choreographer, Cesc Gelabert, (Barcelona, 1953) is an internationally renowned pioneer of contemporary dance in Spain, having choreographed the solos for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s In a Landscape in 2003, and The Measurer for David Hughes in 2004. He has also created choreography for the Balletto di Toscana (Florence, Italy), the Tanztheater Komische Oper (Berlin), Ballet Gulbenkian (Lisbon, Portugal) and the company Larumbe Dance (Coslada, Madrid).

For the family audience, two shows are highly recommended: on April 28, the Ballet of Carmen Roche,

La Niña Farola, an original and innovative production that draws on Japanese manga art and animation

films and the aesthetics of Tim Burton. A show for any child (and the not so young) who has ever felt they were

different to the rest. In early May, with Sleeping Beauty on Ice, the Teatro Cuyás will become

a large ice rink on which, for nearly three hours of brilliant performance, the Imperial Ice Stars will

skate their Ballet (GB): 24 skaters, boasting between them over 200 medals won at world championship, European and national level, will weave this fairytale to a backdrop of spectacular sets designed by Eamon D’Arcy (a leading Australian designer) with hundreds of costumes designed by Natella Abdulaeva guaranteed to be a most memorable evening. And finally Carmen, brought to life by contemporary dance company Ballets de Teatres de la Generalitat de Valencia and directed by Ramon Oller: to the music of Bizet and Martirio, this show is based on the original Bizet opera which in turn inspired the novel by Prosper Merimee of the same title written in 1846. Spanish dance and passions are on full display in this familiar story set in Seville.

RIVERO & MENDOZA

Onwards & Upwards RIVERO & MENDOZA ABOGADOS

In June 2007 Rivero & Mendoza opened their Law office in Playa del Inglés. After several years working for other firms they felt it was the time to use their considerable experience to jump forward and seek their own clients and offer legal services in their own style. One of their first decisions was to advertise in the English language newspaper. They’ve never looked back and have since become not only loyal clients to The Canary News, but also a primary content contributor, providing regular guidance to English speakers on the day-to-day nuances of the Spanish legal system. During the last few years they have built up a really good, productive relationship with the readers

and the staff of this the only English-speaking newspaper in Gran Canaria. “We have been very glad to hear from many of our clients that they know about our firm simply from reading the Q&A section in The Canary News and it is always lovely for us noticing that they are often familiar and comfortable with us from the first moment they step into our offices.” says Miguel Mendoza Martín, one of the founding partners of the firm. The business and their client base have steadily grown over this time due in part to this very close relationship with their regular readers. So, it is a real pleasure for us to announce that Rivero & Mendoz have moved offices to an exciting new premises at the very top of Edificio Mercurio, Torre II, 7ºI, in Playa del Inglés

Though not far at all from their former address (having moved from Tower I to Tower II in Edificio Mercurio), they are confident that this change is clearly representative of new developments in their business and future projects. They have clearly gone up in the world. The new seventh floor offices are delightfully bright and airy so that clients may feel, as soon as they enter, that what Rivero & Mendoza offer is a clear and close relationship of the highest standing, from which to render their professional services with transparency and effectiveness. Furthermore, the new premises enable them to undertake new projects for the future such as deepening their participation in various international associations of lawyers and attending legal

conferences to broaden their areas of practice as well as to establish new collaborations with other legal professionals. Obviously, we shall keep you updated of all of their future developments by means of

The Canary News, but for now Rivero & Mendoza warmly invite you to visit them whenever you wish and let them know what you think about their new pad! Well done Esther Rivero, Miguel Mendoza and the rest of

the staff of RIVERO&MENDOZA ABOGADOS, we wish you every continued success, and thank you on behalf of the English Speaking community for your years of help and guidance to us.

Are Smartphones safe for my children?

Ask Keith

Over the last 8 years mobile phones and recently smart phones have become an every-day tool for our teenagers, now we can find children as young as 9 or 10 with these expensive and quite complex devices. I get numerous parents asking for advise and help regarding these topics. Technology is developing so quickly that parents find it complicated to keep up with all the changes that are occurring and teenagers don’t realize just how easy it is to end up in a complicated situation. Dear Keith, my 12 years old son is being bothered constantly on social networks by some of his classmates, which is the best way to stop this situation. (Puri, Las Palmas) Dear Puri, What your son is suffering is called cyber-bullying, it’s important that you take measures as soon as possible to avoid it escalating to a more serious problem. I would recommend talking first to the school, I’m sure that both his teacher and the head teacher will do their best to help you sort out this situation, if this doesn’t work then you will have to take things further and contact the National Police force who have a specialized team who deals with these matters. Dear Keith, Is it safe to use my mobile phone when I connect to the wi-fi in public places ? (Dani 13, Las Palmas) Dear Dani, Wi-fi systems, which are offered in public places like shopping centres or restaurants, are considered high-risk areas because anyone can connect to them. If you don’t have your mobile protected against external accesses or if you have the sharing options activated it means that your phone is vulnerable to attacks from strangers or even from people accessing your personal information which is saved on the phone. Dear Keith, I recently lost my mobile phone, it was configured with access to social networks and emails, can anyone who found the phone access this information ? (Carlos, San Mateo) Dear Carlos, One of the biggest disadvantages smart phones have is that they usually have the accesses to all your private emails, social networks, contacts, agenda etc saved in automatic mode by the user, this is extremely useful for everyday use but the problem arises when they are lost. Some mobiles like the iPhones are quite good at protecting the data they contain but others like the Blackberry are quite easy to access. Obviously all passwords should have been changed and it is recommendable to rub out all the emails and messages saved on the phone regularly.

In a vocabulary test on Food Vocabulary. Q: How do you say tortilla in English? A: Chips and eggs. Well if you don’t know the word then list the ingredients. Q: How do you say grapes in Spanish ? A: Grapas So be careful next time you are eating grapes in case the staples get caught in your throat. In a vocabulary test on School vocabulary. Q: How do you say breaktime in English ? A1: Romper el tiempo A2: Tiempo roto To be honest his translation is actually correct.

Did you know that 2 in 3 teenagers in Spain aged 10 – 15 already have mobile phones, and most of those mobile phones are smartphones?

Today’s society has become extremely dependant on mobile phones, parents find it a very useful tool to be able to keep in touch with their children, nowadays telephones allow you not only to call them or send them a message but also thanks to the GPS systems they allow you to know exactly where they are at every moment. But are our children safe with mobile phones? Well the answer to this is not that easy, although they are a very useful tool they have also become so sophisticated that they have also become very useful for people who want to have access to minors, many parents buy their children a mobile phone without knowing anything about its functions or how it works, other parents buy them with restricted internet access thinking that this way they are safe but the truth is that most mobile phones in hands of teenagers are completely open to external attacks. Many parents also forget that they are legally responsible for what their children do on the internet so if their children are downloading illegal material onto their phones it’s the parents who are liable for these downloads. And finally one of the most important points to take

PUERTO RICO Tlf: +34 928 561667 puertorico@inmobiliaria-roca.com

into account, you are putting a +500€ phone in a teenager’s hands, there are gangs of people specialising in stealing these devices from teenagers, reports of knife point theft are pouring into the police stations every week many teens are lucky and they just lose their phone whereas others are not so lucky and try to protect their priceless phone resulting in injuries of various degree.

So how can parents feel safer when buying their children a smartphone ? Well, the answer is quite obvious and simple, don’t buy your children a smart phone, buy them a normal phone without camera, Internet, WiFi, etc. Nowadays because of peer pressure many parents feel “forced” into buying smartphones, if this is your case then the best way is to be as well informed as possible about these devices.

Advice for parents. 1 -. Learn about the smartphone before you buy it. Don’t let your children push you into which smartphone they want, go with them to the dealer and spend some time looking at the different models and take home a list of the characteristic of each phone, then sit down and analyse which would be the best option. 2 -. Rules are essential. Rules must be set down regarding the use of the smartphone and these rules

PUERTO DE MOGAN Tlf: + 34 928 565162 mogan@inmobiliaria-roca.com

must be obeyed, it Is advisable to have a spare basic telephone and when rules are broken the smartphone is changed for this basic telephone for a period of time, parents must be strict with these rules because if you don’t punish rule-breaking you won’t be taken seriously. These rules must include how it is used, how long it can be used, where it can and can’t be used and how much can be spent a month. 3 -. Talk to your children regularly. It’s essential that you talk to your children about privacy and the risks of sharing private information publicly on the web and it’s essential that you explain the need for appropriate behaviour on the Internet. 4 -. Sharing their mobile number. Emphasis should be put on the fact that they should only give their mobile number to a reduced number of close friends and family and should never publish their number on social networks, rules should also be set regarding the number of friends accepted on social networks which should be reduced only to identities they can confirm in person with their friends. 5 -. Mobile supervision. Parents should regularly supervise their children’s phones, some parents say that this goes against their child’s privacy, this is a ridiculous excuse as it’s the parents responsibility to check that their children are not downloading anything

LAS PALMAS Tlf: + 34 928 373033 msroca@comprarcasa.com

illegal and that they are making a logical and safe use of their smartphone. Make them aware of the risks of downloading material as some apparently legal downloads hide a fraud, which can cause serious financial or safety problems, make them aware that some of the download services published in magazines or websites are actually a membership system which means they will be charged for every message their phone receives. 6 -. Install parental software. Parental software can be installed on a mobile phone as on a personal computer, this type of software is essential and shouldn’t be an option on a teenager’s phone, most telephone companies will offer these services nowadays, and if they don’t maybe a change of company would be an important decision to make before getting the phone. 7 -. Learn how the phone works. It is often a good idea to get your children the same version of phone as you get yourself as this allows you to know how it works, it’s extremely important to know how a phone works to be able to understand the dangers it may pose and to know how to advise your children on a safe use of the phone. 8 – Ask for advice. If in doubt it’s important to seek for advice, a good counselling on time helps prevent many headaches and it’s always better to be well

DATURA (Datura stramonium)

KEITH APPLEBY

This plant is extremely widespread in the Canary Isles, it is planted in many gardens around the island and it is known to grow wildly in many parts of the islands as the seeds are transported by birds and spread in their droppings. The Datura is an extremely poisonous plant, all parts contain dangerous levels of poison and may be fatal if ingested by humans or other animals including livestock and pets, cows which have eaten the grass growing under a Datura are known to die shortly after. In many countries it is prohibited to buy, sell or cultivate Datura but most garden centres of the Islands sell it without even advising their customers about its toxicity. If you find one in your garden eliminate it immediately, dig it up and destroy it but don’t handle it under any circumstance.

Twitters from the Atlantic If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander. com or read his latest book, ‘Threads and Threats' (ISBN: 9781843866466)

by Barrie Mahoney

Embalming anyone? Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

The unexpected phone call from the mortuary in Las Palmas immediately took my attention. Was I in a position to pay the outstanding account at the mortuary? This really was not the kind of call that anyone would wish to receive first thing in the morning, and particularly when one is struggling to make sense of the world before coffee. I assured the very pleasant lady at the other end of the line that I had no previous knowledge of their service and that, no, I did not have any kind of account with them, nor did I have one that was due for payment. However, I assured her, that I would keep her number on file - just in case I needed a spot of embalming in the future. One just never knows when such services might be required. The very nice lady even offered to send me a brochure about their range of services... The early morning telephone call reminded me of a series of articles that I wrote as a newspaper reporter several years ago about ‘Death in Spain’. The series of

articles were intended to be a helpful guide in managing one of most traumatic times of our lives, and to assist expats in making the right choices in a country with different customs and traditions in dealing with death. The articles were not exactly a bundle of laughs and not ones that would, at first sight, encourage advertisers to promote their new restaurant or estate agency on that particularly page; however, the series was very popular with readers. I recall one elderly gentleman who shuffled into the newspaper office to ask for back copies of the newspaper. He was asked why he wanted them. “It’s those Death pages”, he muttered, “my wife reckons she’ll be needing them soon.” Although it is not really a subject that is often discussed over dinner, or over a gin and tonic on the balcony, thoughts about our passing and those of our loved ones should be considered seriously, particularly when living as an expat in another country. Do we have a will in the country that we are residing in, for instance? I know of many expats who are relying solely on wills made in the UK many years ago. However, lawyers assure me that this arrangement is potentially fraught with difficulties and that all expats should also have a Spanish will, as well as their UK one.

What about bodies? It is traditional, and good sense because of the heat, that bodies are cremated or buried very quickly in Spain, and often within two or three days. This is in contrast to the UK where bodies can be waiting for two or three weeks before funerals can be arranged. Over here, the final departure is quick, which adds more pressure to be clear about the wishes of the deceased. In the event of your demise would you prefer to be flown back to the UK at considerable expense, cremated in your newly adopted country and then sent back in a pot, or popped into one of those filing cabinet tomb arrangements that seem to be popular in Spain? What about costs? Has provision been made to cover the cost of repatriation, for instance? Do you have a funeral expenses insurance policy? These are all very serious issues, I know, but ones that need to be considered carefully and wishes made clear to dependents. Now, back to that early morning telephone call. I am still wondering why that very nice lady at the mortuary called me. There is further information on the ‘Expat Survival’ section of my website. If you have additional information to add, do please let me know.

Spanish Lesson 61

Bilingual

15

Body Talk This lesson, I´d like to look at vocab for naming parts of the body, clothes and accessories. We´ll start with the body, the main difference being that the Spanish usually say ‘the head/ the arm’ rather than MY head/ arm. la cabeza [ka-BEH-za] – the head (memory trigger: hitting your head on a CAB!); el pelo - the hair (and peluquería, the hairdresser); la piel [pee-EL] – the skin la espalda (the back); los hombros (OM-bross; the shoulders); el cuello (cooEH-yo; the neck); la garganta (the throat – think ‘gargle’); el estómago (es-TOH-ma-goh, the stomach); el corazón (the heart); el pecho (the chest and

En la farmacia There are two ways to say that something hurts you, e.g. at the chemist or doctor’s. Either ‘I have pain’: tengo dolor [doh-LOR], or me duele (meh DWEH-leh; it hurts me…), for example: Tengo dolor de cabeza/espalda: I have head/back pain Me duele la garganta: my throat hurts (lit: it hurts me, the throat) But, me duelen los pies: my feet hurt (lit: they hurt me, the feet)

You might want to ask for ibuprófeno, paracétamol o aspirina: or simply say: necesito algo para el dolor/una infección/la gripe (GREE-peh; I need something for the pain, an infection or the flu). Hay pastillas, cremas y líquido (EYE pas-TEE-yas, CREH-mass ee LEE-keedoh: there are pills, creams and liquid) pero todos son medicinas (but all are medicines).

La ropa Items of clothing are easier to remember using word association tricks to help jog your memory: La ropa - clothes (think: rope). Funnily enough, a popular

¿Hablas español? Another lively language exchange

Canarian dish is ropa vieja (‘old clothes’) which is a chick-pea stew traditionally made up of leftovers thrown together to make a meal. la ropa interior (ROH-pah in-teh-ree-OR; underwear – think: interior clothes) la camisa (cah-MEE-sah – the shirt). Some of you might know the song by Juanes ‘(tengo) la camisa negra’ (I have the black shirt); la camiseta (cah-meeSEH-tah – teeshirt, literally ‘little shirt’) el vestido (ves-TEE-doh - the dress, think: VEST); la falda (FAL-dah; skirt), or mini-falda (miniskirt) los pantalones (pan-tahLON-ess: trousers – similar to the American word ‘pants’); los vaqueros, (back-AIRross – jeans; lit: ‘the cowboys’, which go on your BACKside), los pantalones cortos (short trousers/shorts) los zapatos (think of

los pechos, the breasts); la barriga (bah-REE-gah; the belly); el culo (COO-loh; the bum) el brazo (the arm; linked to un abrazo, a hug – lit: ‘to arm’); la mano (the hand, hence segunda mano: second-hand); el pie (pee-EH; the foot); los dedos (the fingers); los dedos de pie (the toes – or ‘fingers of foot’!); la pierna (pee-AIR-na; the leg) LA CARA (the face): los ojos [O-hoss] – the eyes; la nariz [na-REEZ] – the nose; la boca [BO-ka] – the mouth; los dientes [dee-EN-tess] – the teeth; los oídos [o-EE-doss] – the ears (from the verb OIR, pronounced o-EAR: to hear)

ex-president Zapatero – the ‘shoemaker’); las zapatillas (za-pah-TEE-yass; trainers or slippers), las chanclas (flip-flops), las botas (boots), los calcetines (cal-sehTEE-ness; socks), las medias (MEH-dee-ass; tights or stockings) Sounds like English: el cárdigan, el top, el suéter, la chaqueta (jacket), el bóxer, el sarong

Los complementos Accessories for clothes complement your outfit, so are called los complementos. They include: el cinturón (sin-too-RON; belt, which you wear on your cintura or waist); el sombrero (som-BREH-roh, hat – which gives you shade, or sombra), la gorra (peaked cap) or gorro (cap without peak, e.g. for swimming/woolly hat), las gafas de sol (sunglasses – lit: the glasses of sun), el pañuelo

(pan-WELL-oh; fashion scarf or hanky/tissue) LAS JOYAS – (HOI-yas; jewellery) – think: they bring you joy! el collar (coh-YAR; necklace – well, you wear it like a collar); los pendientes (pendee-EN-tess; earrings – think: pendants);el anillo (an-EE-yo; ring, for which a memory trigger might be: ‘Annie’s ring’: annieoh); la pulsera (pool-SEH-rah; bracelet, worn on your pulse); el reloj (reh-LOGH; watch or clock)

Guess the shop! Many store names end in ‘ería’: la farmacia (the pharmacy), la librería (bookshop), panadería (breadshop/ bakery), frutería (fruit ‘n’ veg shop), carnicería (meatshop/ butchers) and zapatería (shoe shop). However, my favourite word-association is for la ferretería (hardware store – or ‘ferret-about shop’).

piano

The old piano from the British Club enters its “tercero edad”- it’s third life or retirement age, bringing musical joy to a group of young people with learning difficulties in a day-care Centre in Mogán. This project was achieved through cooperation between many groups and individuals in the local community. The day care centre in Mogán is owned and run by the Council, providing daycare and activities for young people above school age with reduced capacity. They are taken swimming and to the gym and have drama, dance and music activities as well as outings.

The clients are collected from home and returned by volunteer organisation Cruz Roja (Red Cross) every day from Mon-Fri, accompanied by their social teacher, [educadora social] Lola. The music teacher and some of the outings are provided by the association Nordmannsforbundet, with additional help from donations from members of the Norwegian Club in Arguineguin. The musical instruments at the Centre were worn out after many years of enthusiastic use. Roger and Anne Aas from Nordmannsforbundet contacted Anne-Catherine Strömberg, of the Lions Club Arguineguin (Mogán), to ask

for help in acquiring used musical instruments for the centre and Anne-Catherine asked her friends for help. Enter ‘Volunteers Network Gran Canaria’! The first to reply to the request was tireless fundraiser Kay Owen with the offer of a piano and a guitar. The piano, having been disposed of by The British Club, had been rescued from being chopped up and put in the rubbish bin and instead put to use raising funds for charity, while giving pleasure to Kay’s many friends and supporters. But now was time for it to move on.

So how to move the piano? Lots of active input from the network: a man-with-

a-van, a farmer’s lorry, a charity that moved it from The British Club to Kay’s, but moving a piano is a weighty task not to be undertaken lightly! And of course, when Kay mentioned her delight that the ‘Joanna’ was being resurrected from the ashes yet again, our thoughts went to …yes, you got it in one, PHOENIX! The call went out to Mr. “Who you gonna call” Edward Timon of The Canary News. Renowned to local charities for his support, Ed the Editor spoke to Phoenix Mudanzas who, rising to the challenge, saved the day by moving the piano absolutely free and gratis and for nothing! Nicole at Phoenix was incredibly organised and helpful and very quickly we had a date and time for the move.

The move

The day centre doesn’t want any media attention on its clients, so we were met by teacher Lola while the Cruz Roja were collecting the young people. Phoenix arrived punctually and waited discreetly, as per the plan, until the centre was finished for the morning, to load the piano in to the centre. The piano’s journey was not an easy one, as you can see from the photos, but the removal crew were cheerful, positive and professional (not to mention strong!). There is no way a bunch of volunteers could have managed Kay and Paul’s stairs. Our grateful thanks to Phoenix Trans Internacional for their participation in this community effort. And of course many thanks to Kay and Paul for donating the piano, making a difference for the disadvantaged yet again.

Mother Nature is teasing us with warmer temperatures and sunshine, and I don’t think I’m the only one out there that is ready for a reason to celebrate spring! All the way from Monsieur Dior’s very own childhood home in Normandy, providing the latest inspiration for their new makeup

Civil Ceremonies - The legal paperwork In last week’s article on “How to get married in Gran Canaria” we explained that in order to legally marry in Gran Canaria via a Civil Ceremony, one or both of you need to be a resident in Spain. I’m now going to go into greater detail as to the legal paperwork required in order to go about this.

As we have a multinational readership we’re going to cover all nationalities as the necessary paperwork varies between countries. If you follow this step by step guide, organising the paperwork for your Canarian wedding isn’t as daunting as you might initially think. First you need to make an appointment at the Civil Registry Office in your borough to transmit all the necessary paperwork. They will give you a list of everything you need to bring to the appointment

with you. It’s important you collect this list from them as processes and requirements may change from year to year. As the appointment can be between 2 to 3 months in the future, it is advisable to make the appointment first and then prepare all the paperwork. Appointments can be made at the Civil Registry offices by calling between 09.00h and 13.00h Monday to Friday. It’s also important to remember that Spanish is spoken in all official offices on the island so if you do not speak Spanish you are required to take a translator along with you. If all the paperwork is correct by the date of your appointment, it takes around a month to receive the authorisation to marry. Once received, it is then valid for up to 6 months so bear this in mind when setting

a wedding date. Citizens of France, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Holland, Dutch Antilles, Switzerland and Turkey need to present: Certificate of capacity to marry from your country of origin (according to the Munich agreement of 5th September 1980), you can contact your consulate for more information regarding this document. An International Birth Certificate or an original Birth Certificate in its own language with the Hague Apostille Stamp and a legal translation into Spanish. A Certificate of registration on the electoral role in your borough (municipio) “Certificado de Empadronamiento” in Gran Canaria. The original and photocopy of your passport. For citizens of other countries including the UK and

Ireland you need a few more documents: The original legalized and translated Birth Certificate (issued within one year of the wedding date). A Certificate of being on the electoral role in Gran Canaria for at least 2 years, or a Consulate Certificate accrediting your residency for the last 2 years whether in Spain or another country. At least one of the couple wishing to marry must be registered on the electoral role here in the borough where they wish to marry and this must be proven with a “Certificado de Empadronamiento”. A Consular Certificate accrediting the publication of the EDICTS (proclamations/ bands) of civil marriage in Spain (if this applies to the law in your country). A Certificate of marital status, applied for via your consulate or the appropriate

authorities in your country. The original and photocopy of your passport and residents certificate (the green A4 paper or the older plastic ID card, though it is advisable to have the latest version). A witness with their original and photocopy of their passport, DNI or residents certificate. If you are divorced you need your legalized and translated marriage and divorce certificates. If you are a widow, you need your legalized and translated marriage certificate and partners’ death certificate. It’s important to remember that all the documentation that is not in Spanish

needs to be translated by a “Traductor Jurado Oficial” (Official Sworn Translator) and legally authorized by the corresponding authorities. A Wedding Planner will of course help you with all your paperwork, the legalisation and the official translation of all documents, taking much of the stress out of the process. Gran Canaria is such a beautiful island to get married on. It’s well worth taking the time to organise the legal paperwork and celebrate your special day with your family and friends in this magical place!

Heart, Mind & Spirit

Have you got a moment?

Cheyne Towers MBAThH, GQHP is a fully qualified Hypnotherapist, Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Self Defence instructor based in London. He works with a variety of simple yet highly effective methods of natural therapy, in order to provide the right approach for the needs of each individual, whether it’s for self-development, physical health and fitness or self-protection. For more information please visit http://HeartMindTherapies.com Isn’t it often the case that there don’t seem to be enough hours in the day, what with one thing or another, time just doesn’t seem to belong to us, but rather it seems more like a conveyor belt that we feel obliged to jump on and hold on tightly

to as it takes us from one place to another, one person to another, one emotion to another, all sometimes seemingly dictated to us by this external force. And how many times do we end up missing an opportunity that we may

come to regret in the future at some time or another? And that’s thing with time, we always seem to relate to the linear nature of what time apparently is, for instance everything that’s happened to us in our past, and all of the many possibilities for our futures. And isn’t it all too common for people like us to either be stuck in the past or worried about the future… sound familiar? Recently I have been reading a book by C.S. Lewis, called The Screwtape Letters, which describes in

a series of fictitious letters, written by the demon named Screwtape to his nephew, in which he describes the various means and methods that his nephew should employ so as to better deal with his “patient” meaning the poor human being who is being worked on. In one fo the letters Screwtape encourages his nephew to do everything he can to make sure that his patient is never present in present, and that he should rather make sure his patient worries about the future, or is constantly replaying the past (and this

next part is the point of this whole description) because of course, THE PRESENT IS THAT MOMENT WHERE TIME MEETS ETERNITY. What an absolutely beautiful statement of Truth. So taking this to heart recently I had the great pleasure and privilege of being in the company of several individuals who I know and love deeply and completely, who are both in their middle to late 80s and who are beginning to slow down and wobble a little more, physically, and generally are that little

bit more fragile… and yet absolutely lucid in their minds and wise in their hearts; and spending time in their company brought it home to me what an absolute treasure it is to spend each new moment being fully appreciative of the eternal gift of experience present in each new moment shared. So I would like to encourage you all to consider sparing a moment in your day today and really make a point of treasuring the nourishment that that moment can bring to you when you are truly present and eternal.

by Kay Owen / March 2012

...OF FAITH and MIRACLES When I was a child, like most of my readers I suspect, I just adored fairy stories -especially the ones with happy endings. They could be as gruesome as they liked throughout, just as long as that amazing, extraordinary and unexpected ‘miracle’ occurred before the end; such as the timely rescue of the damsel in distress and the ‘fate worse than death’ of the villain of the piece.

YOU are cordially invited to celebrate the ACCMyG 7th SWIMWEAR PARADE, of LINGERIE AND UNDERWEAR in support of THE CANARIES ASSOCIATION OF BREAST CANCER (ACCMyG.org) themed: “Putting a FACE to CANCER”, which will take place on Saturday March 31st at 7:30 pm in The MILLER BUILDING located in the Parque de Santa Catalina, with admission priced at just €10. During the ceremony, several prizes will be raffled. During the evening a jury will select from the participants who is to by the ACCMyG MODEL OF THE YEAR 2012, with awards also going to Miss Elegance, Miss Sympathy and Miss Photogenic, 2012. The show will be presented by Maspalomas local celebrity Roberto Herrera of RTVE and will feature performances from, the voice of The Canaries, Pepe Benavente, the gospel singers Groupo Rainbow and the

Noelia Torres dance studio. All the models, have been cáncer sufferers and overcoming the implied barriers that society imposes on them for aesthetic reasons. This event seeks to strengthen participant self-esteem and in turn break the social stigma that breast cancer and gynecological cáncer entails. The evening will be presented in Spanish, but with more than enough content that goes beyond any perceived language barriers. The Canary News is a proud supporter of ACCMyG and would encourage anyone ever to have encountered the debilitating effects of cancer to come along and support this most worthwhile charity event. Tickets are available by writing to ACCM@TheCanaryNews.com or indeed by contacting the charity directly via their website at ACCMyG.org

Getting from the “Once upon a time” and managing to live through the horrifying details of the story, waiting with bated breath for the event that would eventually get us to “and they all lived happily ever after” was a tummy-churning, nail biting experience! Remember Red Riding Hood and that big bad wolf? Hansel and Gretel and the wicked witch? Sleeping Beauty? The fearsome courage of the hero was always to the fore, but miraculous intervention was often all that could explain the measure of good triumphing over evil in many of these old tales. A miracle can be described as an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs .And though the following is not a fairy story; it shares many of the ingredients’ of a typical Hans Christian Anderson tale. I think it is a wonderful example of simple childlike faith - the kind that makes miracles and moves mountains. So if you’re sitting comfortably, I’ll begin!

Tess was eight years old when she heard her Mum and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely broke. They were moving to an apartment next month because Daddy didn’t have the money for the doctor’s bills and the house mortgage. Only very costly surgery could save Andrew now and it was looking like there was no-one to lend them the money. One day she overheard her Mum and Dad praying, after her anxious Father had said to her tearful Mother, “Only a miracle can save our boy now” . Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass sweet jar from its hiding place in the toy cupboard. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times even … just to be sure of the amount. Then, carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out and made her way to the local Pharmacy. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too intent on talking to another man to be bothered by an eight-year-old at that moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. No response. She cleared her throat loudly. No good. Finally she took a coin from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone. “I’m talking with my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen for ages,” he said crossly. “Well, I want to talk to you about MY brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really very sick, and I’ve come here to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the incredulous pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy

says only a miracle can save him now. So please, how much does a miracle cost?” “I’m sorry but I can’t help you; we don’t sell miracles here, little girl,” replied the chemist, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it - and if it isn’t enough I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist’s brother stooped down and asked kindly of little Tess, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really poorly and Mummy says he needs an operation, but my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” ”How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered barely audibly. “It’s all the money I have, but I think I can get some more if I need to.” “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents is the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.” He took her money and they went together to see little Andrew and her parents. “ That man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a doctor specializing in neuro-surgery. The successful operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t too long before Andrew was home– completely cured.. Mum and Dad were ecstatic as they discussed the amazing chain of events that led to this happy outcome. “That surgery,” Tess’s Mum whispered, tears of gratitude in her eyes, “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost? Tess smiled to herself. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost ... one dollar and eleven cents. (Oh... and the faith of a little child of course!)

Motivational, Knowledgeable & Obtainable Goal Setting:

The Role of a Personal Trainer When I take on a new client it’s always a special moment. From that first phone call or email I know that they have taken the hardest step in basically asking for help. Before they make contact with me they’ve got a pretty good idea of what they want to change in their lifestyles and without doubt will have had a friend or family member that I have previously worked with and can assure them that they will get results. I thought therefore it would be a good time to discuss 3 key roles of a personal trainer and ultimately understand what you should expect from them - you’ve invested in them, so why shouldn’t you!

Motivation Before starting with any new client I always have a consultation to discuss various key topics but ultimately understand their short and long term goals. It is vital we both agree on these and of course they will be re-evaluated throughout. The role of a PT is then to act as your training buddy, push you through those 6.30am sessions... Keep you amused and challenged even after a long shift at work. Expect this from a PT, it is their job be dedicated to KEEP you motivated. That doesn’t just mean proving that you can run up a hill but also proving that you’re improving by recording progress I.e. taking regular body measurements

TheCanaryNews.com

or monitoring how far you can run.

Knowledge Expect your PT to be accredited and have several years of experience behind them. Knowledge and continual fitness training is core to providing a client with the correct fitness program. It is a PT's job to seek more information on their client so that there is no risk of injury and results can be realistically achieved. - Whether you have dodgy knees, neck problems or a fear of water, we will find out!! Communication should be continual, not just in sessions. Feedback is vital - whether it is via text, email or phone you should be able to feel relaxed and confident with sharing information with them. We will ask how your weekend run went and follow up with how your class went on Tuesday! We will see how your porridge in the morning is coming along and how your fondness for chocolate is gradually declining. Yes, I’m afraid we are all over you like a rash. You have come to us for a kick up the backside after all!!!

Goal Setting As mentioned, part of your initial consultation is to establish obtainable goals. Following this a well balanced program will be put together for you and include step by step instructions. Your PT should constantly record

your sessions and provide progressions as you become stronger. Of course they should also provide additional supporting exercises should they discover areas of weakness I.e. lower back pain. Part of a PT s goal is to also motivate the client to exercise by themselves and find pleasure in doing it!! It might take a while to get there but once you do you can make your PT sessions last longer and get more confident in yourself.

Bit about me! As a qualified REPS Level 3 PT with 4 years experience and current competitive triathlete; I fully understand the commitment and dedication required to achieve a clients desired objectives. During a PT session I’m pretty certain my clients would describe me with some delightfully colourful adjectives but afterwards and deep down they love it!! I do push clients to their maximal potential and expect hard work. In return they have my full dedication and motivation during, after and before any session. I will make it as fun and pain free as possible and providing we work together and are honest throughout you can be sure to expect results.

Copper

by Ann Mather Celebrity Nutrition Advisor, Famouslyfit.com

26

The Canary News - Monday 26th March - Sunday 8th April 2012 - Issue 67

Ann Mather is a qualified and experience nutritionist and a specialist in Food Intolerance Testing. She can be contacted on 647 844 260 for an individual consultation or for more information. I suspect that most of us would associate copper with pots and pans and pipes, but it is another essential trace mineral for the body, required in small amounts.

Why is Copper Important? Copper is important for the growth of bone, connective tissue, brain, heart and many other organise. It is involved in the formation of red blood cells, the absorption and utilization of iron (coming next week) and for the release of important proteins and enzymes that regulate nerve transmission, blood glottying and oxygen transport around the body. Copper stimulates the immune system, and helps repair injured tissue, promoting healing. It helps to neutralize “free radicals” which cause severe damage to our cells.

Copper in the Body We can only obtain copper from the foods that we eat. The amount of copper available depends on the chemical form of copper in the food, the composition of

the whole diet, and the health and nutritional wellbeing of the person. Some forms of copper are not soluble in stomach acids and cannot be absorbed from the stomach or the small intestines. Also, some foods contain indigestible fibre which binds with the copper and prevents it from being absorbed. High intakes of Vitamin C, zinc and iron can also decrease copper absorption. The recommended intake of copper varies, although most fall within the range of 0.9 mg/day to 1.3 mg/day for an adult. Interestingly, there is no scientific information available regarding requirements for children. It is reported that as much as 10 mg/day is unlikely to result in any serious health risk.

Supplementation Deficiencies in copper are very rare. Individuals who are not eating a balanced, healthy diet may experience deficiency. Other at risk groups include people with chronic digestive problems, alcoholics, people who have eating disorders, are on strict diets, are chronically ill, are at risk of osteoporosis. or are taking medications that block the body´s use of copper. Different forms of copper have different absorption rates. For example, cupric oxide is the most common and cheapest form of copper but has a

low absorption rate. Copper gluconate, sulphate and carbonate have much higher absorption rates. As always, I recommend www.nutrigold.co.uk for high quality supplements (use code CB111).

Symptoms of Copper Deficiency As with any vitamin or mineral, it is possible to have too little and too much. The most common signs of deficiency are similar to that of anaemia. Swollen ankles and skin problems may be involved, and it can also contribute to cardiac abnormalities and elevated levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.

Food Rich in Copper The best sources of copper include seafood (especially shellfish), organ meat (such as liver), whole grains, nuts, raisins, and legumes. Other foods such as green leafy vegetable, some fruits including coconuts, papaya and apples, mushrooms, peas, potato and red meats provide reasonable levels of copper.

ball over the bar. ▶ 1-0 Some beautiful passing between 3 with Pignol crossing well and Javi Guerrero slamming a merciless volley home. Fine confident display from UDLP against a Celta that come here with a seven game unbeaten run, 26th minute on form Vitolo gets away from his marker but finds himself with just too little angle for a clean shot. ▶ On the half hour Celta look a bit more confident and seemed to have moved up a

gear but it is Jonathan Viera yet again in the 36th minute who has a crack from 25 yards which goes over the bar. ▶ 39th minute and with just six to go for the break, Celta get a free kick just outside the penalty area, very dangerous position and it would be a bad moment for Celta to equalize so close to the break, luckily it goes over the bar and Las Palmas breath again, 43rd minute it is the turn of Herner of UDLP who has a shot go right across the face of the

Then its right back to the other end of the pitch as Almeria have a dangerous looking freekick on the edge of the box, it comes to nothing and

goal a minute later Vitolo is fouled again in a similar position to the Celta free kick moments earlier, we have seen Jonathan blast a few home from here so there is genuine surprise when Momo steps up to take the free kick, he hits it hard and a deflection leaves the keeper wrong footed 2-0 for Las Palmas right on the stroke of half time ▶ We will have to see the result of the Celta half time talk but the first half has been near perfect by Las Palmas. ▶ Three minutes into the

the first half finishes with no more incidents. ▶ Would like to see either Quiroga or Portillo come on early in

the second half to add a more attacking edge. ▶ Disaster strikes in the first minute of the second half as a bad

second half unlucky Celta hit the post and at 5 minutes the ref shows the yellow card to Lago Aspas of Celta for diving in the area looking for a penalty. ▶ The pessimism felt earlier in the season is long forgotten with this spirited and workmanlike performance, the only way Celta can slow down Vitolo is by fouling him. ▶ Less than 15 minutes to go and Celta are getting nervous and reckless when Vitolo finds himself on a one on one against the keeper, he

slides it calmly home for a really classy finish and although UDLP are three up they are still chasing and fighting for everything. ▶ 86th minute a David Rodriguez header for Celta makes it 3-1 but it is only a consolation goal. 94 minutes the final whistle arrives to end the best game that I have seen this season. Well done everyone, including the referee. by IAN WILCOX

UD Almeria clearance by Barbosa goes directly to Almeria who cross quickly and Ulloa gives Barbosa no chance with a well placed header. In the 56th minute Quiroga finally gets his chance to shine replacing Herner. ▶ 64th minute and a good clean header from Javi Guerrero puts UDLP back in the game at 1-1, half an hour to play and it is still anybody´s game. Three minutes later Javi Castellano sees a great chance go over the bar and on 69 UDLP are backs to the wall again as a defensive error gives Ulloa the chance he needed to make it 1-2. ▶ Esteban in the Almeria goal is equal to all the high crosses so Las Palmas are going to have to try something different to change the outcome of this , when sud-

denly a cross comes over just out of reach of Esteban and David Garcia equalizes again with a cracking header. ▶ Portillo finally gets his chance in the 80th minute, too late to make any difference, Almeria are in no rush and seem happy with a draw and Las Palmas after coming back from behind twice should also be happy with this point. ▶ Next game away to Valladolid next home game will be on the 8th of April against a tough Numancia where Las Palmas were unlucky not to get a result in the away game.

Surfrider Beach Clean: Arguineguin 2012

between 22nd - 25th March 2012 throughout the world and is thought to have hosted close to 1200 beach/river/lake cleans almost simultaneously. Let’s see how the Surf Canaries team did when they went to clean the famous “Callao” beach in Arguineguin...

by Daniel Alcock In 2011, 42,000 volunteers in 35 countries got together to help clean up more than 1200 beaches, lakes and rivers over a weekend. They collected the equivalent of 38 busloads filled with aquatic waste, talked about their consumer habits and took action against the pollution of the sea. Two of these beach cleans took place in Gran Canaria, and this year, the Surfrider Foundation were back with Team Surf Canaries and the Clean Ocean Project for the 2012 Arguineguin Beach Clean. This the 17th annual “Ocean Initiatives” was held

Things didn’t start great Our beach clean kit that was lovingly packed and sent to us from Surfrider Foundation Europe’s HQ in France had been released from Customs by the Estellez UPS company, who then in turn demanded lots of money to release the package. Lots of shouting ensued and to cut a long story short, people doing a good deed had to spill out good money to keep the project on course and our pack arrived just 3 days before the beach clean, not too much time for a poster campaign then. On the plus side, 2012 saw the collaboration with the Clean Ocean Project

CleanOceanProject.org. These guys are from Fuerteventura and organize beach cleans, monitor pollution situations and make some very nice environmentally friendly clothes. Also, we saw great co-operation from the Mogán town hall with plastic bags and container supplied by the enthusiastic team in the office. Once again, the beach clean saw reliable collaboration from it’s faithful sponsors that support the beach clean each year: CaSa Cleaning: http://casa-cleaning.com Super Chano Supermarket (near to la charca beach, next to Fusion resturaunt) Oceans Initiative: initiativesoceanes.org Surf Canaries surf-canaries.com The British Medical Clinic: britishmedicalclinic.com Real Graphics Puerto Rico Underwater Canarias Photography:

UnderWaterCanarias.com Please return the favour by using these local and good willed small businesses (the bigger businesses were no where near as generous!). The day arrived, earlier than expected due to the change of the clocks! Some sleepy heads soon were running around excitedly when they saw the surf perfect chest high waves that greeted us... so it was straight in to the water for the surf team for the pre-beach clean surf (whilst the non surfers had an impromptu BBQ sausage breakfast, also good!) Once out of the water the team took position, sweeping along the beach from the small rock swimming pool, across to the “charca” river mouth, on past the football stadium and right up to the cement factory, separating plastic, carton, tin and other residues. There was a good

turnout from the volunteers (not as many as we would have liked, but they made up for it with their enthusiasm) and it was really encouraging to see non-participants helping out, bring rubbish down and asking to join in. Some volunteers had come from as far as Las Palmas to help, whilst other more local kids had to overcome adversity to participate - one example was a “grounded” youngster who had to negotiate his escape with his parents by tidying his house, to be allowed out to tidy the beach! Once the beach was done, the BBQ was fired up once more and there was plenty more surfing to be had. With the van blaring music all day, the information stand with all the relevant flyers and snippits from the surfrider foundation on the stall and a couple of educational DVDs playing on loop in the van, there was a really good atmosphere on the beach.

So what is it that we want to say with all this? Respect the ocean, it is more important than we know Refuse the ubiquitous presence of plastic in our lives by avoiding overpackaged products and un-necessary plastic bags (which your average shop assistant will try to force onto you and all times!) Reduce our consumption of plastic, especially single use items such as plastic bags and plastic bottles. Re-Use old and used items Recycle our waste. This includes reducing our consumption - the most sustainable solution since recycling has an environmental cost Many thanks to all who participated and the sponsors of the event. What a fun way to help out the beach and the rest of the environment!

Like a dog with two tails The cry for help went out: The Canary Unfortunately on our otherwise paradisiacal News and its readership responded in island, homeless domesticated animals spectacular fashion. In the last edition, TARA are a problem of epidemic proportions. detailed the animal respect association Despite the efforts of many concerned annual dilemma. No less than 25 TARA foster animal advocates, legions of dogs and cats families (folks who care for abandoned dogs remain in county pounds and animal welfare while permanent homes are sought) were kennels. What is urgently needed are folks preparing to fly north for the late spring and willing to foster or adopt a homeless dog summer season in their European countries or cat, puppy or kitten. The sad truth is the of origin. Their canine wards needed new best pound or kennel is still life in a cage. families to fill the gap. In a double page What canines and felines require is human spread, photos and descriptions of many of contact – someone to provide the warmth and affection that every domesticated the needy pooches were published. You will be desperate for human attention and care. glad you did. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” Nature Boy by Nat King Cole 1948

TARA Spotlight on the Homeless Diablo Despite his off-putting name, Diablo is a sweetie-pie. Unfortunately, the young women who adopted him are no longer able to provide the time and attention he deserves. He does have one behavioural issue: Left alone a long periods of time, Diablo tends to bark his objection. What he deserves and desperately needs is a foster home or adoption home where loneliness will not be an issue. If you have always wanted a bitsy little lap dog that will draw uddles of ahhhhs from friends and family, Diablo is your guy.

Wendy

Rita, an extremely dedicated animal advocate and TARA supporter, had friends visiting from Finland. When they happened upon a local pet shop, they found a very forlorned looking Wendy. Unable to ignore the sadness, they bought the pup. Unable to take Wendy back to Finland, they gave her to Rita who was already fostering and caring for too many dogs in her modest apartment. Chris and Tim, TARA volunteers from the ancient past, happily agreed to foster Wendy until a permanent home is secured or until they return to England – whichever comes first. Tim reports that Wendy is wonderful – no issues, just a happy well-behaved puppy that will make some lucky adopter a fabulous friend for life.

Denny Found in Tafira Baja near San Francisco de Paula, in the middle of a country lane wearing a heavy chain around her neck and head, and had sores on her hind quarters. She was very thin and almost swaying from dehydration. Without a microchip, no owner could be found so Denny is now being nursed back to health, and is clearly very loving and docile and just wants to be loved. At around 18 months old she just needs food, water and lots of TLC in order to recuperate and start life afresh with someone who really cares, and loves to be loved.

Fotboll

Men Gran Canaria hade återfått självförtroendet, vilket

Linda Appelqvist

upp i samhället.
