Storms Yellow Alert

The Meteorological Agency for the Canaries has announced, as we go to press, a yellow alert for heavy rains and storms expected on all the islands from Wednesday. They expect the initial rainfall to reach 15mm within the first hour and warn that it could reach 70mm within 12 hours on islands such as La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The alert is on all islands from noon Wednesday, to midnight on Thursday, April 12. In general, the skies will remain cloudy to very cloudy on the islands with higher ground, with low precipitation expected during the early morning but it may be more abundant in the north. Rain is expected to increase throughout the day with moderate intensity. Snow is even expected at levels higher than 2,200 meters. Driver, injured after vehicle plunges off cliff

A woman was only slightly injured on Monday morning after her car slid about 10m down a cliff falling onto another road in Amadores, in the municipality of Mogán. The accident took place early morning at 0730 hours when the driver, who was heading to work, swerved on a road that was on a slope and fell down to another road that was immediately below. The Fire Consortium service in Puerto Rico rushed to the scene and found the woman trapped inside her SUV, although initially it appears she only suffered mild injuries. They had to cut the roof off the vehicle to release the woman, who was taken by ambulance to the Hospital San Roque in Maspalomas, according to sources in the Emergency & Safety Coordinating Center 112.

An 18-year-old critically stabbed

A young man was seriously injured from a stab wound early on Easter Sunday morning at a shopping centre in Playa del Inglés in the south of Gran Canaria, reported the 112 service in a statement. The incident occurred at 06.40 in Kasbah shopping centre, well known late bar and clubbing hotspot which has increasingly seen brawls and occasional robberies over recent years. The victim, 18, was apparently attacked with a knife to the chest, causing him serious injury. Medical personnel from the Emergency Services attended at the scene to assess his injuries, and later took him by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria. This is the second time in less than a week that such an incident has occurred.

Last Thursday an algerian man was reportedly attacked with a machete to the back. Local security men seemed incredulous saying that this was highly unusual and that despite frequent petty thefts, such vilent attacks rarely if ever occoured at the Kasbah. Eyewitnesses from Sunday´s incident are reported to have told newspapers that the stabbged man was not a victim of crime at all, but had in fact tried, armed with a knife, to rob two others who were passing by. They say a struggle resulted in the man being slightly injured with his own weapon, but then when he saw nearby pólice starting to approach, he is reported to have plunged the knife into his own chest or stomach. The National Police have taken over the investigation.

The Cooperative of Agricultural and Livestock Organizations (COAG) of the Canary Islands has asked the Cabildo to declare a wáter emergency due to one of the driest winters in living memory on Gran Canaria. According to Juan Hernandez, secretary island of COAG, the situation has not changed with the heavy rainfall this weekend and flows have not increased nor have they lowered prices per cubic meter of water, which are now reaching record levels. In contrast, farmers expect continuous increases in the price of water irrigation in the North Medianías, in the centre of the

island, from wells and resevoirs, especially upwards from the 500m mark. A little further down, at 300m, where the network prices of purified water or stored water extracted from the aquifer are a little lower, yet still “the same price”, Hernandez points out, per cubic metre “as a kilo of potatoes.” The Minister of Presidency, Economy and Finance of the Cabildo, Rosa Rodriguez, is now leading a working group to improve management and distribution of water resources on the island, Besides the price, Hernández highlights wáter “scarcity”, as it is

not only that prices are high, but there are even areas where there is almost no availability at all, such as on the highest points of the center and north of Gran Canaria. This is frustrating growers of potatoes and vegetables destined for market. To quote ine figure, mid-season potatoe growerss planting at this time of year, have reduced their crop by more than 70%, said the secretary of the COAG for the island. For now, water stored in dams supplying the arid south of Gran Canaria allows farmers and ranchers to weather the drought with better prospects.

A woman suffered serious injuries Sunday after the vehicle in which she was traveling was struck by landslides on the road to Fataga, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The woman was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew from the 112 due to the severity of her wounds, then transferred to hospital, local sources reported. At the crash site San Bartolome de Tirajana Firefighters and Guardia Civil attended, while local police took responsiblity for regulating traffic, which was brought to a standstill for over an hour on the stretch near the Mirador de la Degollada de la Yegua. The landslides were caused by the heavy rain that occurred in the south of the island in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Björn Lyng had a dream for the South Lopesan attempt to gain 35% of the Gran Canaria hotel business

The entrance to Anfi Tauro in power would leave the 17,558 beds in Eustatius Lopez Gran Canaria The Lopesan-Lopez Group reportedly aims to gain control of Anfi Tauro potentially increasing their available beds by 7,500. This would give the hotel business a total of 35% of the island’s 120,000 beds in total in Gran Canaria, To achieve that growth, Lopesan must first gain 50% of the shares of Anfi Tauro held by heirs of the Norwegian, Björn Lyng. They will likely need also to assert the burden of a debt owed by

the company to Lopesan, reportedly purchased some time ago for between 9 & 14 million Euros, according to sources, so as to minimize the grip of power held by Grupo Santana Cazorla, who own the other 50% and also holds the executive power to make final decisions prescribed, we are told, in a consensual agreement with the Lyng family. Sources say that Santana Cazorla has tried in recent years to increase its shareholding and strengthen its position beyond its current 50% share of the company and thereby put their decision-making

When in 1985 the Norwegian Björn Lyng came to Gran Canaria, he decided that this would be the place to enjoy retirement, but he never actually did retire. After a life almost entirely dedicated to business, primarily in industrial engineering, Lyng jumped joined the tourism boom of the 1980s with a plan to change the face of business in Gran Canaria. Two years after his arrival he bought some waterfront land and laid down the plans for

power beyond question. It now appears that there is to be a wrangle between the two companies, the largest operators on the island, as part of along running rivallry to profit from the highly lucrative Gran Canaria tourist industry. The feasibility of the 7,500 beds in Anfi Tauro is said to be a key factor in the negotiations. Lopesan have recently been given permission to proceed with plans for a new Marina in the south of Gran Canaria, which it said to get the goa head for work to begin before the end of the year.

Anfi del Mar, 852 luxury time-share apartments boasting more than 2,600 beds. With a great head for business he knew that the road to success was not to place all his eggs in one basket and so quickly diversified his investments. Among other businesses, he dedicated himself to the island’s in water desalination and the processing of plastics. Anfi del Mar worked well and grew steadily, but the Lyng was still not satisfied, setting his sights on the Barranco de Tauro he dreamed up the Anfi Tauro resort. Björn, a native of Hurum, Norway, correctly figured that a large amount of northern Europeans would be willing to spend some time and money to spend some of the year surrounded by luxury and enjoying the best climate in the world. His Anfi Tauro plans boasted a further 7,500 beds, two golf courses, and a 490 berth marina, a large shopping center open to the sea and even a medical clinic specializing in the treatment of chronic diseases. He was one of the main early investors who called on Canarians to preserve their land from over development. But the subsequent moratorium and laws that followed became his worst nightmare. Eventually only part of his Anfi Tauro complex was achieved, but Lyng’s dream was left incomplete.

Is Spain Next?

Nothing seems to be making much of a difference in the currency markets at the moment. In itself that is a contradictory statement to make. Following the last couple of months of concern with Greece and the lead up to the UK budget both matters have passed us by without having any real impact upon exchange rates. Finally after much political haggling the Eurozone Finance Ministers agreed to release the necessary funds to Greece and stop them (for the time being) from defaulting . How long this money will last is the big thorny issue and the poor Greeks are having to make all sorts of sacrifices. The big question now is has contagion been stemmed? Not if you listen to all the pessimists by all accounts its the turn of Spain and Italy next, it is true however that both governments are experiencing some hiccups within their own countries. In Spain we know that they

will not achieve the budget set by them for 2012 and the recent local elections proved to be very difficult indeed for them with one of the biggest regions Andalusia almost turning against them, they did however manage to hold 50 seats compared to the 47 won by the PSOE. The turnaround was a protest against the recently introduced new set of austerity measures and this in a region where the regional deficit is more than double its 1.3% of Spanish GDP for 2011. In Italy a similar situation is looming as Mario Monti who was brought in to restore order to the country’s financial plight is facing a revolt form the unions and fellow politicians. With rates on bond sales being a key part of any further financial stability pressure will continue to mount on both these countries future bond sales. The other matter for EU to deal with is the coming together of the two bailout funds, the EFSF (European

Financial Stability Facility) and the ESM (European Stability Mechanism) they believe the larger the fund the more confidence the watching world will have in the EU’s ability to bail out any country without breaking the back of the fund. Germany and Finland in particular have been very much against merging these two funds however it does seem Angela Merkel is yielding to the pressure to achieve such but she has to balance this decision against her electorates wishes, a tricky one!!! What ministers do seem to agree on is that there is no room for complacency. Looking at the UK there has been a mixed bag of news with bankers bonuses continuing to seek headline news and news of potential new jobs whilst losses through companies such as the Game Shop. Banks are never far away from the headlines and again this happens to be the case with RBS as the government

considers how it should conclude its discussions with an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund who wish to buy part of RBS. Is it a right time to sell particularly as the taxpayer will face a bigger loss than that already costed. You can flip a coin on this one and still not win. With mortgage applications also proving to be elusive the fragility of the UK economy once again raises its head. Let’s hope that Lord Browne (former head of BP) is correct when he forecasts that the UK could benefit by up to 50000 jobs with the possibility of shale gas fracking doubling the reserves of gas in the UK. Whilst over in the States all had been going particularly well until Ben Bernanke Federal Reserve Chairman cast some doubt over whether the sharp decline in US unemployed figures could be sustained without the demand increasing across the bigger picture, unusually he was a mlittle downbeat. If you look at what has

been happening with rising inflation and an improving job market the possibility of further quantitative easing is becoming a little more distant. His comments did however have a temporary impact upon the exchange rates as the dollar did retreat a little against the pound and the euro.

Photography in Gran Canaria Sports

Expert advice on everything you need to know about living and working in Gran Canaria. Last time we looked at many of the great locations for photography in Gran Canaria, this week we’re going to look at the many events and sporting activities that look good from behind the lens. From traditional Canarian parties to high adrenaline world class watersports Gran Canaria is really a great place to get some great photos.

We’ve talked about how to participate in the many activities available here in GC but there a couple that are really great to photograph too. Windsurfing Head over to Pozo Izquierdo just south of the airport on a windy day and you are more than likely to see one of the world’s top windsurfers. Go in late June or early July before the PWA event and the bay will be filled with the best windsurfers in the world and you will be spoilt for choice with almost everyone on the water looping every other minute. Take at least a 300mm lens to catch the action. For examples of the photos you

could see have a look at the gallery on cutre.com Surfing When the surf is good in Gran Canaria it is comparable to some of the best spots in the world. The most photogenic location is in El Confital where, from the beach, you can take photos right down the barrel. Otherwise just drive along the north coast until you see some surfers in the water. Another great location is Arguineguin in the south. Look at our surf guide to see how to get there. The world tour stops off in Gran Canaria in November in El Confital and the beach is usually packed with pros with in feasibly large cameras. Take your long lens and a polarising filter.

Special events

The King’s procession On the 5th January Spain celebrates Christmas eve. Head up to Las Palmas and watch the Kings procession. It usually starts in the port after lunch (near Mesa y Lopez) and finishes in Vegueta at about 7pm. After which is a talcum powder party where everyone throws talcum powder over each other!! Carnaval If you are in GC in February / March make sure you go to Carnaval. It is one of the biggest Carnivals in the world and the streets will be full of thousands of people in fancy dress. If you can get tickets try to go to the Drag Queen show where you’ll get some great,

albeit strange, photos of really extravagant drag costumes. Best time is to go late at night after 10pm when everyone is on the street. WOMAD The Gran Canaria WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) festival is the biggest in the world. During the day you can see flame throwers, jugglers and various street performers and at night you can see exotic bands from around the world all in their traditional clothing. Take a big camera for the night to get the bands on stage. Gay Pride Similar to the Las Palmas Carnival the Gay Carnaval in Maspalomas is a huge street party with a fantastic procession to finish it off.

Romerias All the villages and towns have their own street parties where everyone dresses in traditional Canarian outfits and drinks rum from the bottle. Go early and you’ll catch the procession and all the people in their costumes before they fall over inebriated. If you love photography Gran Canaria is a really fantastic place to get some good shots. Head up to the mountains, go to the dunes and try to find an event somewhere. Teens want to be constantly connected with their friends, it’s a must for most students to be in constant reach of their pals and they can become very anxious when they are not online. This can lead to an addiction to the mobile phone or to the services it provides. This should be carefully supervised by parents and its use should be monitored. Readers’ Questions Dear Keith, my son who is 15 is completely obsessed with his mobile phone, he is constantly using it and can’t concentrate at school or during homework time. What should I do ? (Paco, Galdar) Dear Paco, Mobile phones for teenagers should be a privilege not a right, you should sit down with your son and set some rules about it’s use, when rules are broken then the privilege should be withdrawn for some time. I always recommend parents to get a very basic telephone and when rules are broken then the smartphone is replaced with the cheap phone for a number of days. If you are strict with these rules the attitude should improve otherwise you would need to seek professional advice. Dear Keith, I have just bought my 12 year old son an iPhone, I am a bit worried about him carrying around as we live near Triana and I have heard stories about gangs going around stealing phones from children. (Mari Rosa, Triana, Las Palmas) Dear Mari Rosa, Unfortunately that is true, there are a number of areas in Las Palmas and other towns where groups of youths gang up on children and rob their phone, some of them can be quite violent I personally know of various cases of young teens who have been forced knifepoint to hand over their phone. Take into account that you are putting a 600€ piece of equipment into the hands of a child. You should have a talk with your son and make him understand the importance of being discreet when using that type of phone when he is alone. Dear Keith, I am about to buy my 11 years old daughter her first phone, she wants a Blackberry, what would you recommend ? (Marta, Teror) Dear Marta, I would recommend you start with a basic phone, something simple which would allow you to work on its usage rules, you can set some objectives which when met will be awarded with the wanted phone. A good example would be the promise of a Blackberry for her next birthday when she is 12 if the rules set for the use of the basic phone are followed without a flaw during that year. If you obtain good habits from the beginning it will be a lot easier in the future.

How can I use my smartphone Nowadays most teens carry mobile phones, the latest statistics say that 2 out of 3 teens aged between 10 and 15 carry smartphones, but do you really know how to use them safely? Are we bothered?

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author. “What the British can’t see won’t bother them” was the response from the British Ambassador to Spain when asked about the recent news of the authorisation of an oil company to explore for oil off the Canary Islands. Although mindful of the creed of most Ambassadors to be “All things to all men” (such is the world of diplomacy), it is understandable that the Ambassador was not in a position to criticise the decision of the Spanish Government. However, to many Islanders, as well as environmentalists in Spain, his inappropriate and

ill timed comment at the time of the announcement was regarded as unhelpful at best, and insensitive at worst. The islanders are bothered. It is certainly true that the British like their holidays in the sun, but many are also concerned about environmental dangers facing the world, as well as in an area so rich in marine life as the Canary Islands. Holidaymakers flock to the islands each year in search of sunshine and beautiful beaches, to enjoy fresh fish and to explore some of the more remote areas in the mountains. Will they really continue to do so with oil platforms scattered around the area and polluting our ocean? Holidaymakers are bothered. Most holidaymakers are well aware of the issues surrounding the dangers to the fishing industry and local population should another disaster occur, as in the Gulf

of Mexico. Warnings from Greenpeace too highlight the immense dangers to the environment from all forms of deep-sea exploration. Of course, the irony is that fuel from oil is required to bring holidaymakers to the islands in the first place. Do we really have to see the dangers before we are aware of them, and become concerned about their impact to ourselves and future generations? Most British holidaymakers are bothered. The Spanish Government needs more revenue and, in theory, a reduction in oil bills would significantly help the economy in time. The Spanish Government also maintains that their decision will bring much needed revenue and jobs to the islands, as well as Peninsular Spain. This is indeed tempting, as the islands have one of the largest unemployment statistics in Spain, and the lack of

opportunity for its young people is heartbreaking. However, this claim is disputed by many politicians in the Canary Islands, who comment that most jobs in the new oil industry will go to people from outside the Canary Islands, and its largely unskilled workforce will not be needed and neither, in time, will there be a tourist and fishing industry to sustain them in the traditional manner. Many island workers and young people are bothered. Ironically, the British government has just given BP the go-ahead to drill a new deep-water well in Scottish waters off the northwest coast of the Shetland Islands. The issues to be faced in Shetland are very similar to those in the Canary Islands, and environmentalists were outraged with the announcement, quoting the potential risks to the climate and threat of an oil spill. Is

deep-water drilling really worth the risk? Should we not be phasing out our use of oil instead of chasing ever more difficult sources? These are some of the comments that are currently echoing in both the Canary Islands, as well as the Shetland Islands. Are the Shetland Islanders bothered about the risks to their beautiful and unique islands? Of course they are. Only last week, investigations began into a large oil spill from a platform in the North Sea that was “allowed to disperse naturally” into the ocean. The spill of 23 tonnes of crude oil came from the Tern oil platform 100 miles north east of Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands. The oil company stated that the spill was a result of “a temporary upset in the production process whilst cleaning up a new well”, and the spill was stopped quickly

and posed no risk to either crew or the platform. This one incident is a taste of issues that could seriously affect both island archipelagos for generations to come. I have no answer to the twin dilemmas of the demand for oil balanced with environmental and climatic impact. However, I do know that warnings about the environment and climate change should be taken seriously and that we do need to reduce our dependency upon oil. Meanwhile, a clear debate about all the issues involved, as well as alternatives to the current proposals are what the inhabitants of both the Shetlands and the Canary Islands require. Dismissive comments such as those made by the Ambassador about the current proposals are unhelpful. In the words of comedienne, Catherine Tate, yes, we are bothered.

CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT

An interview with Wim Geirnaert the founder of Clean Ocean Project was established 10 years ago when a group of disgruntled surfers, sick of seeing so much rubbish on the beaches in the north of Fuerteventura decided to do something about it. They started to organize beach cleans and events. 10 years on, Clean Ocean Project continues with it´s beach cleans but it is also now respected pressure group, information point, resource agent for other beach cleans and even a successful fashion line. The Canary News were lucky to catch up with founder Wim Geirnaert for a few words on the proposed oil platforms in the Canary Islands and he had some very interesting insights to share with us…

RISKS Wim, following your studies, what would you say were the risks to the environment in the “best case scenario” (with everything running smoothly and without major accident)?

“Even before oil is excavated, there is a process carried out, similar to an x-ray that produces sounds that will kill sea life for miles around, even dolphin. This will effect sea-life before any oil is extracted”. “Drilling at great depths involves chemicals being used in the drilling process and it is proved that just the excavation of the oil, even without accidents will result in oil and chemicals being released into the water and will kill wildlife and potentially arrive on our beaches.” And it appears that It´s not just the oil production that will pollute, with the oil production there will be spin off environmental problems. “There will be a lot more traffic from ships that transport the oil. Our north east shores have thick tar on their rocks (with the rocks being black, it is not too obvious but it is there and it is a great hazard to wildlife) and this is due to shipping and illegal cleaning of the ships bilges close offshore. competition) just 3 weeks ago unearthed a huge expanse of oil, supposedly left by cargo ships. It is well documented and is happening already, so I don’t think it will get better when the oil excavation starts and they are moving 40,000 barrels a day!” With Major Accident: Scary similarities to the Gulf of Mexico? Wim pointed out that we must watch recent history and take heed. “Geographically, the area for the proposed oil sites are very similar to those in the Gulf of Mexico, where we recently saw the devastation of the oil spill. Excavation at these depths is extremely risky and oil companies have little experience with them” If we have a disaster such as this one, we could see the virtual elimination of sea life in our waters. The tourism and fishing industry would be completely decimated and the Canary Islands would have lost the majority of its industry. Are we prepared to risk this potentially happening for the potential benefits for Repsol and Spain?

BENEFITS Apart from Repsol benefiting, Clean Ocean Project don’t see any benefits for the oil excavation. There is no evidence to suggest that it will be a revenue source for Spain, let alone the Canaries. Are we being conned? Wim explained to us: “The government and press are talking about platforms that are 60KM from the Canary Islands coastline where, in actual fact, Repsol have obtained permission to excavate starting from just 10KM offshore.” Drilling gets more risky as it gets deeper. As oil gets scarcer, it becomes more and more economically viable to drill it, even at great depths. Is it tangible that this will lead to more disasters in the future? Wim goes on to explain that the myth that “If we don’t get there first, Morocco will” is unsubstantiated. The reality is that they are talking about completely different areas. The zone off Morocco is much closer inshore and therefore

with less risk. This is just a smoke screen to win public support. Why now? Wim tells us that there is no need for Repsol to excavate this oil yet, they are doing so to avoid stronger regulation in the future; “In 2013 there will be new stronger regulations in place to protect the environment. The average cost per day to run a platform is 500,000 Euros per day, but after the 2013 regulations, these costs will be closer to 1m Euros. It is in Repsol´s interest to enter before these regulations are in place”. “There is nothing new with these proposals. Repsol have tried (and failed) to obtain the rights to excavate this oil already. Lack of a good environmental plan led to its down fall when it was last presented 8 years ago.” So how can we go forwards from here? So if oil extraction in the Canary islands is not beneficial to us, what is it we can do about this current situation? I asked Wim for his opinion; “Signing this petition shows the public´s objection

to the project. There are already approaching 15,000 signatures and this will help show government where the public stand.” Talking further with Wim, he sees this moment as potentially positive as it could be a “great opportunity for the Canary Islands to choose renewable energy and become easily completely independent from any other source of energy. This petition is nothing against oil, I also drive a car! It is about drilling oil in a very sensitive, protected area which endangers the whole tourist industry”. El Hierro is powered completely on renewable energy and doesn’t have to answer to anyone on the subject of power. It would take time and investment but would bring a long term benefit to the Canaries and it´s people, without putting its tourist and fishing trade at risk, not to mention it´s paradise coastlines and all those who live within.

Here is a press release from the Clean Ocean Project: SAY NO TO ANOTHER DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL

On the black Friday* the Spanish Government has approved the proposal from the enterprise Repsol for oil prospecting in the Canary Islands. This company plans to use for the drilling 616.060 hectare of the east coast of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, amount of nearly 2.5 times the size of these two islands. Apart from benefiting Repsol there’s no reason to install oil rigs in this area. However there are plenty of reasons against oil prospecting in the Central Atlantic: ► The area belongs to the Natural Reserve of Biosphere and in 2004 the Maritime International Organization declared this part of the ocean as especially sensitive. ► Crystal clear water in the area, white sand beaches and surroundings will be clearly polluted. ► Different species of cetacean, turtles, fish and thousands of invertebrates live and eat from the ground coral that will be destroyed if the drilling is allowed. ► Nearly one third of the species living in this part of the ocean are endemic. ► The chances of oil spill when drilling in deep waters are extremely high. ► The main income of the two islands is based on the tourism that enjoys the coast line and beaches. ► All water used in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote comes from the ocean, after being desalinated. ► Why using petrol when sun, wind and ocean power can be used instead? ► Citizens and local government from the Islands are totally opposed to the project but the central government ignores the fact. ► The constant burning of toxic gases will increase global warming, a worldwide concern. ► Repsol is known for cheating on the environmental measures taken in oil prospecting and has been involved in 7.000 oil spills in the last 5 years.

THE SEARCH F More than a few have questioned the oft-declared definition of Gran Canaria as a Paradise on Earth. To we who enjoy the pleasures of her voluptuousness, Paradise seems an obvious truth; to others, perhaps the statement is a bit presumptive; some leap to the defence of another pleasing place they believe more deserving of this title, a title of mythical proportions. But The Canary News does not presume that Gran Canaria has earned the coveted credentials of a true paradise. We deduce it to be so through the powers of reason by the ribald and rambunctious. It feels a spiritual thing, yet sound as a pound. In fact, we intend to provide irrevocable evidence that Gran Canaria is not only a paradise – but in reality by most means of measurement – The Paradise on Earth – the best there is and the best there shall be in the foreseeable future, globuliesation and global warming notwithstanding. Over the next issues The Canary News intends to reduce such braggadocio to mere common knowledge. The purpose being: To better appreciate the bounty of our island, to be more able to enjoy her pleasures, and more successful in trumpeting her triumphs to could-be and would-be visitors.

The Blue Planet. This marvel of molten magma made up entirely of the elements found in the Periodic Table, is surely the most inviting spherical object in our known universe. Said universe (at this point) consists of some 170 billion stars in

The Milky Way (our galaxy) in a place that apparently is the abode for 200 billion other galaxies. Earth orbits at precisely the optimum distance from her Sun to be bathed in light and warmth pleasing to the propagation and sustentation of life.

The Earth by comparison to anything else we know is fecundity incarnate. Conclusion: Earth is The Paradise in our solar system, and, at the very least, one Paradise in the known Universe.

OR PARADISE Secondly, the view from an earthly perspective:

From our school days, we recall (or not) that if there is to be a veritable Paradise on Earth, it must certainly lie along the central ribbon of the globe. Some refer to this ribbon as the Paradise Belt – lying for our purposes between the 30th parallel down from north of the equator (the great circle circumscribing the Earth’s surface) and the 30th parallel up from south of the equator. This supple swathe of sensational climate entirely encompasses our tropical and sub-tropical regions. The equator (an imaginary mid-planet line drawn by cartographers initially for purposes of navigation) is the cinch-point in the earthly girdle beginning on the west coast of Africa at Gabon, then proceeding across the Atlantic through northern Brazil, on to southern Columbia, piercing Ecuador (any guesses on the origin of the name) at the Pacific, sliding on to Darwin’s famed Galapagos Islands, and beyond into Micronesia, there bisecting Borneo and Sumatra, then moving through the Indian Ocean until striking eastern Africa including Kenya, Zaire, The Congo, then finally reuniting with itself about 360 degrees back at Gabon. (Is that a run-on sentence, or what? Endless, just like a circle.) On the lands and seas lying 20 degrees above and below the equator is found what is commonly considered

the tropics: The Caribbean, thru the mid-Americas, on past the South Sea Islands, Northern Australia, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Southern India, much of the Middle East, and finally Central Africa. Here lies lots of sun and warmth; rain and humidity; and the great winds and lightning which altogether coalesce to create the fierce circular storms (typhoons, hurricanes, and cyclones). This is habitat to much fertility including our planet’s rain forests and reefs. Somewhat ironically this area is also home to most of what are today our great desserts. Next, the band between 20-30 degrees north of the equator and 20-30 degrees south of the equator is known as our sub-tropical climes – those areas around Earth that bask in non-extremes – not too hot nor too cold, too dry nor too humid – a placid midrange of ambient conditions conducive to cosy, comfortable living and growing. Due largely to the tilt (axis) of our Blue Planet’s 24 hour daily rotation, the spherical annual orbit around our sun means that the optimum latitudes lie on the narrow strip above the equator between 25 degrees and 30 degrees north. At or near sea level, these locales provide maximum nurturing conditions. Here we enjoy Florida, Southern California, The Hawaiian Islands, the heart of the Fertile Crescent, and, yes, the entirety of The Canarian Archipelago – 28N

degrees latitude – the perfect placement on our planet, also known as Paradise! Thanks to a natural concoction of circumstances which includes barometrical and other atmospheric contingencies, the speed and direction of ocean currents, oceanic temperatures and depths, the incidence (or lack thereof) of storms, and the fertility of the volcanic created soil, the Canarian archipelago rightly hosts the finest climate on Earth. In fact, according to the World Health Organisation, an adjunct of the United Nations, the south coast of Gran Canaria has

enjoyed the best weather on The Blue Planet for as long as such statistics have been kept. More precisely, from Mogan to Arguineguin, Gran Canaria possesses the greatest known ambient existence in the Universe. Period. End of sentence. End of paragraph. End of debate. Whoops! Are there still naysayers? Do some protest that wildly wonderful weather is not the here all and be all to defining Paradise? That the blatant, clearly defined, vital, often violent variance possessed in the experiencing of four distinct seasons is a paradisiacal experience not

available in Gran Canaria. Point taken and conceded. Although we do get the occasional snowfall in the centre of the island, no snowplow need be summoned. T’would be fair rebuttal to suggest that if one misses bad weather, one could always visit. No need to live in it. It is also reasonable to insist that there is more to Paradise than 350 days of annual sunshine, blue skies, surrounded by azure waters seemingly embraced by eternal warmth and biological profundity. For now, let us concede what is clear, exceedingly well documented,

and utterly obvious to the beholder: The Grand Canary is the Cosmic Champion of good weather! In the next issue we shall consider a broader conception of why Paradise is paradise is Paradise.

The Iron Lady: Never Compromise One of the most ambitious

Organizing a destination wedding, blessing or renewal of vows ceremony can be much more complicated than organizing an event in your local area. Here are a few tips that can help you along to ensure your day runs as smoothly as possible.

1 - Get Help If you haven’t already, check out the local wedding planners to see what services and packages they offer. Organizing a wedding in your local area can be daunting enough but in a different country can be a minefield. A Wedding Planner will shoulder the burden of researching, interviewing, and securing local suppliers especially if the said suppliers do not speak your language. They are also the behindthe-scenes fairy godmother, vetting special requests such as hair and beauty, dry cleaners, and so on. They also get everyone where they need to be on time and ensure that you have a “go to” person to send your guests when all the itinerary queries get a little too much.

2 - Itinerary Unlike a wedding in your local area, guests are dependent on you once they reach the destination. Create an itinerary of pre and post wedding events along

with an itinerary of the day, important contact numbers and addresses. This will avoid them asking you when & where they need to be and will help them in the event they get lost or delayed.

3 – Pre-wedding visit You’ll need to take a trip to the destination to visit local venues and suppliers such as the church, reception venue, hotels for you and your guests, rehearsal dinner venue and local suppliers such as florists, photographers and hair and beauty salons. Food tastings and hair and beauty trials can be organized in this trip or a second trip may need to be made depending on the size and complexity of the wedding and the arrangements. You can also take advantage of organizing activities (golf, spas and excursions) for everyone while they are in the destination.

4 - Supplier checks If you’re hiring a supplier without any experience of their work, ask for a portfolio of pictures and references from previous clients who held a similar event as yours. 5 - Build up a relationship with your suppliers Building a relationship with your suppliers is paramount. They are not local businesses that you can pop in and see whenever you wish, so stay in contact with them as

much as possible with updates and thank you emails or calls.

9 - Dress to impress not stress! Take into account the climate when choosing that perfect wedding dress. Choosing a satin ball gown to get married in the summer sun may have you more stressed than impressed. Check out the average temperature and weather conditions for the chosen month in the local town where you plan to get married. Remember, temperatures can vary from resort to resort so don’t just take the temperature rating for the capital of the country if you’re to marry in a totally different area.

10 - Relax & enjoy! One advantage of marrying on an island or in a tropical destination is its relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Keep an open mind on slight punctuality differences and minor mishaps; they can even

make for some of the best memories. Also take into account that supplies available on islands can be limited so slight differences in the products you order may occur. Flowers are a great example of this; their availability differs from season to season.

11 - Packing your suitcase! Be sure to pack lots of strapless tops if you’re wearing a strapless dress or wedding gown and slap on the suntan cream. You would be surprised how much you can catch the sun by just walking to the local supermarket in the morning. You don’t want noticeable strap marks or post sun burnt peeling skin on your wedding pictures. Also don’t forget to leave ample room for your wedding gown and contact your airline to get advice as to how your gown will be transported so you can pack it accordingly. It’s very disappointing to get to the check in desk carrying your perfect wedding dress only to find that it needs to be checked in with your suitcases or will be thrown in the overhead compartment with other passengers bags. Always pre arrange for your wedding dress to be steam when arriving at your resort, 9 times out of 10 it will get slightly creased in transit no matter how much care you take.

12 - Wedding gifts Organize for all wedding gifts are sent directly to your home address. If you do happen to have some gifts brought to the destination, arrange for family and friends to take them home with them to keep until you come back from your honeymoon. Alternatively pack an extra bag to bring them home yourself just in case.

13 - Welcome Your Guests It can be customary to leave a wedding basket of destination essentials for your guests that have travelled a long way to share your special day with you. It can include samples of local cuisine or artisan goods, sun cream, local wines or spirits and can be adapted to your own budget. Coupled with a thank you note, it’s a lovely way to show your appreciation to your guests for taking the time and effort to come and stand alongside you on such a memorable day in your life. Now I wonder how many of us over the Easter period has spent time in contemplation of the title this piece, and how the subject can relate to ones own personal life and circumstances at this point in time?

It’s not often that we choose to contemplate sacrifice in our daily lives, yet from time to time it can prove to be a very fruitful and transformational exercise. For instance, have there been things not necessarily only in your outer life but more importantly aspects of your mind and character which may not have been serving you in any positive way any longer, but instead have perhaps become

troublesome, heavy and more of a burden, and a hindrance to your own personal progress and development? If so, why not consider, figuratively speaking of course, sacrificing those unhelpful character traits in order to free your greater potentials? Don’t just consider this an intellectual exercise, don’t just pay it lip service, but instead why not choose to take time out from your normal daily schedule to really apply yourself to making changes, decisively and positively, and honouring them with your self respect? Now in order to follow this line of thought further, try making a little list of The Things in My Character That I’ve Become Fed Up With.

I’m not suggesting that you be harsh with yourself at all, but please try to be honest, and courageously so, in admitting those things about you that, maybe under normal circumstances, one might choose to ignore. For instance, I’ve been avoiding making enough effort in one particular direction or another, or things of a similar nature…maybe even, I’ve been quite grumpy at certain times with certain people and not necessarily treated them in the right ways…but it really could be anything that hasn’t been the kind of quality that you may wish to demonstrate in your dealings with people. Then once you have your list, take each individual item, and identify one thing to

hypothetically sacrifice; then spend a few moments trying to imagine the exact opposite of the character trait in question and begin to consider how different your life can become as a result of redeeming yourself of that trait in a most practical expression of transformation. Imagine how much more progress you can begin to make… and imagine how differently the people around you may begin to relate to you as a result of such a marvellous transformation, or simply how much lighter and freer you can feel within yourself? Then take the next thing on the list and do the very same thing. All too often people feel that they just are the way they

are and never really grant themselves the permission to change, but the fact is we all have the capacity to change and change is a process well worth relating to in its most positive sense and befriending as such. After all in the Easter story of Christ’s crucifixion and the terrible suffering which it represents there is also that miraculous transformation from the lower to the Higher Life, and this serves a s a symbol to all of us; as we all have within us the capacity to raise ourselves up, out of the lower and in to the higher and clearer expressions of our uniqueness. An exercise well worth engaging in methinks.

HOW WAS YOUR EASTER EGG? Well, isn’t it a tad late to be writing an article about Easter, Kay? Well no … at least not for me. I

could not have written this particular story had I not received last Sunday a very particular Easter - Egg (one of the 80 million chocolate eggs sold in the UK alone in 2012!). Let me tell you about my ‘egg with a difference’ Easter-egg this year - but first a little history. In olden times, Christian monks were very

good at explaining the good news of their faith to those who hadn’t heard of God .They almost always took symbols of significance to the people they were teaching and used these as visual aids. The idea of the new life associated with springtime was merged with their teaching, and was observed as the Easter

holiday many of us know today. Easter coincided with the festivals which celebrated the awakening of Spring - signifying an end to winter .So at Easter time they demonstrated using eggs - symbolic of new lifewhich fortunately for the old monks married up very well with their teaching of Jesus’ death and resurrection! Back to my ‘egg with a difference’ given to me by my best friend last weekend. The brightly coloured front of the box informed me that this was “The Real Easter Egg; a milk chocolate egg to celebrate the REAL meaning of Easter”. It continued, “It would be hard to imagine Easter without eggs wouldn’t it?” then further asks, “But why do we eat and enjoy them?” It answers its own question in a delightfully illustrated booklet inside the box, specially designed to appeal to any child receiving the egg. Now my special choccy egg revealed another unique selling point. I learned that it was manufactured by The Meaningful Chocolate Company, whose

simple philosophy states, “We love making chocolate and we love helping others, so we’ve combined our two passions in life to create our business”. I like their slogan -‘Making a big chunk of difference’. I felt much less self-indulgent as I nibbled away, when I discovered that the purchase of my egg this year is making a big chunk of difference to the lives of others, as a 15p charity contribution is donated to Traidcraft Exchange for every purchase from Meaningful Chocolate. In its first year of trading the MC Company gave an amazing £4,000 to Baby Lifeline and a further £20,000 to the registered charity Traidcraft. Many of our readers will be aware that Fairtrade(fighting poverty through trade) works to help create a world free from the scandal of destitution and injustice; a place where people and communities can flourish as they gain confidence and knowledge to trade their own way out of abject poverty. This chocolate egg itself contains an impressive 77.5% of Fairtrade ingredients, all certified to international standards. Money donated helps farmers and growers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods, plus an additional premium to invest in community projects, thus enabling them to take more control of their lives. A panel on the side of my Easter- Egg box gives out a twofold message when

it states; ‘The events of the first Easter took place 2000 years ago. Today billions of people all over the world believe that by dying on the cross and coming back to life Jesus gave people a chance to know God in a new way. Now people can indulge themselves with delicious chocolate, knowing that they are making a meaningful difference to others, thanks to the charity contribution they make whenever they buy Meaningful Chocolate’. It seems to me that this has the makings of another ‘happily ever after’ story. As the recipient of the Easter egg I am very happy. My friend who donated to the charity by her purchase is very happy. The Meaningful Chocolate Company is very happy. Fairtrade/Traidcraft is very happy. And the poor people whose lives will be transformed because of this initiative are no doubt ecstatic! A chocolate egg has never made so many people smile! So there we have it. Easter 2012 has been and gone; Easter bonnets 2012 have been and gone; my own Easter Egg 2012 has most certainly been and gone. And if our monks of old were reading this article today, significantly holding aloft their own Easter eggs and nodding wisely they would no doubt remind us –“ But the meaning of Easter has not been and gone, and the message of Easter will surely last forever -that’s good news isn’t it?”

Very few people are aware of the enormous role magnesium plays in our bodies. After oxygen, water and basic food, magnesium may be the most important element needed by our bodies. Magnesium is even more important than calcium, potassium, or sodium, as it regulates all three of these minerals.

Magnesium in the Body Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in our bodies. Our bones contain around two thirds of the magnesium in our bodies, muscles 25% and blood only 1%. Magnesium is a “cofactor” in activating over 350 different biochemical reactions including energy

production, protein synthesis, bone formation, creation of new cells, and activation of B vitamins, function and relaxation of muscles, functioning of the heart, kidneys, adrenals, and brain as well as the nervous system. It protects against bone loss and bone embrittlement. We need more magnesium than most people realize – 320 to 420 mg per day. Of the magnesium taken, only about 50% is actually absorbed through the small intestine.

Supplementation A major problem with magnesium is the inability by the body to readily absorb it when it is not within a plant or in an ionic form and there are not many food sources that are rich in magnesium. This is a stadium which has always seemed to be a bit of a jinx for UDLP, and against yet another team who are sure to be pushing for promotion at the end of the season (a good bet for 2nd place) and where UDLP have never won. Last Saturday was no different, though Las Palmas were brave and fought throughout and even looked like they had managed a draw, the jinx made good in injury time and Valladolid scored their winner. All of the goals came during the second half and it was really only during 10 minutes of the game that Vallodalid dominated the rest could have gone either way. David Garcia got on the scoresheet for the second week in a row and special mention should be made of Momo who since his arrival has jelled very well and is looking better every game. This Saturday at 5.30 sees UDLP at home to a tough Numancia, I cannot see any problems there, as in the away fixture Numancia had to resort to a lot of fouling and luckily for them they had a ref who clearly is in the second division for a reason.

mention. ▶ Juan Manuel will have to say something at half time if Las Palmas are to break this deadlock and the defence will need to be better organized so as not to get surprised, all the signs say that this game will be decided by one goal and Herner will have to be careful after receiving a yellow card. ▶ Ten minutes into the second half Jonathan finds Quiroga in space, but Quiroga fails to capitalize on the chance, seconds later Jonathan crosses again this time the header rebounds off of the post into play only for the subsequent shot to blast into the side netting. ▶ Everything about this

second half says that Numancia are more than happy to go back to Soria with a draw and the negativity of their game is demoralizing. ▶ 75th minute after constant niggling from Unai of Numancia, he and Jonathan have a set-to which results in both of them going for an early bath. Five minutes later a good cross into the Numancia box, Quiroga jumps for the header but Cabrera in the Numancia defence holds him down by his arm stopping him from getting a clean leap, the ref spots it and signals the penalty, which David Gonzalez steps up to take, placing it right in the corner beside the post out of reach of Zabal, 1-0.

moms or their kittens. Sadly, it seems that abandoned mother cats, recalling the sweet side of said humans, seek out the illusionary comfort of human communities to drop their litters. “TARA, some wild cat has had her kittens in our garden shed. Come and get them! We don’t want them around.” Well, momma isn’t wild. Wild cats wouldn’t have their kittens within shouting distance of a human home. If Momma has her kittens in your yard, your home, your garage or your car, she was almost certainly dumped – chances are because she was pregnant. She is hoping to lure a softhearted human into her purring presence made even more alluring with the presence of adorable, delightful kittens.

Sometimes it works, but more times than not, the desperate call for TARA goes out. What to do? Svenska Kyrkan utflykt och basar Den 21 mars var dagen för en årlig utflykt. Med buss gick resan från San Agustín till en liten by, med endast några hundratal invånare, som heter Ayagaures. I dess mitt finns ett torg. På detta en byggnad som rymmer såväl en bar med matställe som ortens sjukvårdsmottagning. Och så naturligtvis kyrkan. Utflykten arrangerades för alla de som deltagit frivilligt i Svenska Kyrkans arbete under det gångna året. Ett 50-tal personer hade anmält sig och samlades efter ankomsten till Ayagaures, i kyrkan. Här tackade kyrkoherde Anders Björnberg alla närvarande. Han konstaterade att frivilligarbetet är en nödvändighet för Svenska Kyrkans fortlevnad i dess nuvarande form, med alla dess aktiviteter. Vidare hade han noterat att intresset för att hjälpa till, glädjande nog, hade ökat. Orsaken till detta var inte helt entydig, men han

poängterade att frivilligt arbete inte endast innebär att ge, utan också skänker tillfredsställelse i känslan av samhörighet. Tacktalet hölls signifikativt nog i en kyrka som var tillkommen enbart via gåvor och finansierad av lokalbefolkningen. Under ett antal år hade bygget fortgått men ännu återstod innertak att färdigställa. Bygemenskapen var stark och resultatet påtagligt. Med denna inramning avslutade Anders Björnberg med att be alla församlade att ta del av en typisk kanarisk måltid, tvärs över torget. Redan dagen efter att alla frivilliga hade tackats för deras insatser, var det dags att återigen ta deras välvilja i anspråk. Onsdag, mellan klockan tolv och fem, var det nämligen Svenska Kyrkans kombinerade våroch påskbasar. På denna dag, troligen årets hittills varmaste, kom mycket folk. De skänkta föremålen såldes eller utgjorde vinster i tombolan. Kommersen var livlig, liksom aktiviteten bakom kulisserna. I köket iordningsställdes mat och dryck. Försäljning av bröd och hantverk krävde sitt. Alla deltog och kyrkorådets ordförande, Staffan Lundgren, stod i kassan för att betjäna uteserveringen.

Norska skolan vann!

Alltsedan skolan bildades har det spelats volleyboll på Colegio Noruego. Som ett sätt att förbättra integrationen mellan det kanariska samhället och norska elever med familj, valde man att starta en turnering där lokala skolor inbjöds att delta. Traditionen fullföljdes även i år och den 22 och 23 mars pågick tävlingen. Olika lag med konstellationer av elever, föräldrar och lärare deltog. Det var däremot första gången som eleverna i avgångsklassen ansvarade för hela arrangemanget. Två månaders förberedelser har krävts, där ett 30-tal personer under Emelie Rivelsröd´s ledning på ett föredömligt sätt genomförde evenemanget, varför skolan beslutat ge nästa års

avgångsklass motsvarande förtroende. I finalen ställdes VG3 mot I. E. S. Arguineguín lärarlag. Första perioden vann hemmalaget tämligen komfortabelt. Däremot började säkert nerverna göra sig gällande i andra perioden. De norska eleverna har nämligen vunnit de tre senaste drabbningarna och favoritskapet vilade tungt. Motståndarna bjöds in i matchen efter några enkla missar och motståndet blev allt hårdare. Men, efter ett rafflande slut stod VG3 som segrare med 2-0. Volleybollvinsten var rättvis och odiskutabel. Däremot fick hemmapubliken se sig slagna, i matchen på läktaren, av det gästande lagets supportrar.

Norskt och kanariskt kulturutbyte

Gran Canaria kan erbjuda ett mycket brett kulturutbud. Öns regering har en förhoppning om att turister i allt större utsträckning ska upptäcka och ta del av detta och uppmuntrar initiativ som befrämjar utvecklingen. Idén till en kulturutbyte mellan Norge och Gran Canaria kom från Dolores Rodríguez Afonso och den 27 mars öppnade Kanarieöarnas kulturminister, Larry Álvarez evenemanget Mogán Intercultura 2012, i Arguineguín. Denna gång jämfördes dramatikern Henrik Ibsen med romanförfattaren Benito Pérez Galdós. Båda har det gemensamt att de förde in den realistiska litteraturen i sina respektive länder. Därefter presenterades, på motsvarande sätt, de första representanterna för modern lyrik; Tomás Morales og Sigbjørn Obstfelder. De kanariska författarna och deras verk beskrevs av respektive direktör för museérna La Casa Museo Pérez Galdós och La Casa Museo Tomás Morales. Norska skolans Vg3, bidrog med ett allsidigt program om Henrik Ibsen, med såväl bildspel som scener ur Peer Gynt, Ett Dockhem och Vildanden. Presentationen av Sigbjørn Obstfelder gjordes av klassens norsklärare, Lillibeth Lunde. Hennes hängivenhet och engagemang från norsk sida, var en bidragande orsak till att projektet genomfördes med ett så lyckat resultat.

Som en del i en större turné gästades den 20 mars Las Palmas och Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, av The Glenn Miller Orchestra (UK). Orkesterledaren Ray McVay, har mött och spelat med de allra största musikerna under sina 50 år i branschen. Hans stora kärlek till storband och i synnerhet ”Kungen av Jazz” – Glenn Miller, gjorde att han skapade en orkester som har ett sound så nära originalet som tänkas kan. Under kvällen bjöds publiken på 24 låtar. Men det var inte enbart en instrumental konsert. En kvinnlig sånggrupp, The Irresistibles, sjöng helt i The Andrew Sisters anda, till ett flertal av dem. Colin Anthony gjorde likaså några uppskattade nummer, inspirerad av Frank Sinatra, i bland annat ”Strangers In The Night”. Det var stor underhållning. Förstklassig storbandsjazz, med fina individuella soloprestationer av orkestermedlemmarna. Spelglädje, skämtlynne och en fantastisk kontakt med publiken bidrog också till stämningen. En bejublad nostalgitripp där encore var given – ”In The Mood”
