Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as the Commonwealth realms, and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations. She is also head of state of the Crown Dependencies. Born in London, and educated privately at home, her father acceded to the throne as George VI in 1936 on the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, in which she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. On the death of her father in 1952, she became Head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. Her coronation service in 1953 was the first to be televised. Between 1956 and 1992, the number of her realms varied as territories gained independence and some realms became republics. Today, in addition to the first four aforementioned countries, Elizabeth is Queen of Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. In 1947 she married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, with whom she has
four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. In 1992, which Elizabeth termed her annus horribilis (“horrible year”), Charles and Andrew separated from their wives, Anne divorced, and a severe fire damaged part of Windsor Castle. Revelations continued on the, state of Charles’s marriage to Diana Princess of Wales, and they divorced in 1996. The following year, Diana died in a Paris car crash, and the media criticised the royal family for remaining in seclusion in the days before her funeral. Elizabeth’s personal popularity rebounded after she appeared in public and has subsequently remained high. Her reign of 60 years is the second-longest for a British monarch; only Queen Victoria has reigned longer. Elizabeth’s Silver and Golden Jubilees were celebrated in 1977 and 2002; her Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated during 2012. Which ever way you view 60 years in any job is to be commended, especially when you don’t really have much choice in the matter. She is widely known to be one of the most photographed people in history. If you’re celebrating the Diamond Jubilee, we want to hear about it. A load of Rubbish
We received this letter from a concerned resident voicing serious concerns about the problems with ‘basura’ ruining the appearance of this beautiful island. We would love to hear your suggestions on ways that we the problem can be better dealt with...
Dear Sir
Jennifer Mills-Westley
One Year On
May 13th signifies a year since the brutal death of Jennifer Mills-Westley on the Island of Tenerife at the hands of a knife wielding madman. Jennifer’s two daughters, Sarah (42) and Samantha (38) are still coming to terms with the loss of their mother due to such a horrendous act of violence. Jennifer, 60 at the time of her death, had worked hard to build the lifestyle she wanted; being able to spend time with her family in France and Norfolk and also spending time with friends at her apartment in Tenerife where she had been holidaying for over thirty years. Daughter Sam, who lives in the South of France and is mother to Jennifer’s five grandchildren, said: “Mum lived for her family and friends and loved being able to get away to the sun, she would move between France, Norfolk and Tenerife and was around to help me raise my five children; my youngest, Eli, being only four months old when mum was murdered. I found it impossible to tell my children how their ‘grand-mere’ died although this task was taken from my hands when my thirteen year old daughter was exposed to the awful truth via the explicit detail

circulating the internet; distressing my family further, raising questions around mum’s death that I am still unable to answer.” “Mum’s apartment in France is attached to my house and she spent many weeks around her beloved grandchildren, supporting them and playing such an important part in their lives. We all deeply miss hearing her laugh and sing and we feel hollow with all of the gaps in our understanding”. Sarah, Jennifer’s oldest daughter, added: “I’m absolutely devastated by the loss of mum, she was my best friend and life will never be the same. It’s impossible to comprehend how viciously mum was killed; it’s only since Mum’s murder that we have learned how mentally ill the killer was; how he moved from country to country wreaking havoc and the number of signs that, just perhaps, evidenced that he was capable of this type of offence. We have so many questions that are, as yet, unanswered.” The case continues. The family are being supported by Missing Abroad and Victim Support’s National Homicide Service. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office continue to provide consular assistance.

As members of Grupo Montañero de Mogan, we walk all over the island. Every Sunday we have guided tours to various places. Many of our members walk almost every day in the beautiful mountains of Gran Canaria. We are very concerned over the huge amount of basura (garbage), being dumped everywhere on the Island. Certain Municipalities are doing a great job in trying to clean up and maintain their municipality in a close-tospotless condition! However, this is not easy! The problem lies with the attitude of visitors as well as with residents of the island. Even if there are facilities to receive the various types of basura, many just leave their rubbish behind when leaving the beach or other recreation places. We have several “Punto Limpio” (Collection Points for Problem Garbage” on the Island, however, lots of people just dump their old electrical appliances into the nearest “barranco”. This is not only disgraceful, but it is creating pollution to the soil that might take centuries to disappear, if ever. In order to educate the visitors as well as residents, something serious must be done. Singapore was one of the most polluted Countries/cities in the world, it was smelling and stinking all over. Then the authorities, with Prime Minister Lew Kuan Yeuw (Harry Lee), at the forefront, decided to clean up the country and make Singapore a better place to live. A law against polluting was approved and enforced. After this job was done, the next step was to educate the people. Several methods were tried out, but with limited success. Then the Singapore government decided to punish the persons not obeying the rules. A fine for every offence! This gave Singapore the nick-name “Fine-City”. To copy Singapore might not be feasible here, however, certain steps must be taken in order to prevent a major disaster for the future generations and to make Gran Canaria a better place to live for everybody! We have been observing huge amount of residue and garbage incl. electrical appliances being dumped near the beach, in the barrancos and in the mountains. This is not only irresponsible but illegal. Our suggestion is, that all such offences must be reported, when observed with the time and date as well as the number of the vehicle involved. A photo would be helpful. Then a campaign against polluting must be set in motion, followed up by a voluntary clean-up action in every municipality on the Island. We are convinced, that hundreds of visitors and residents would like to participate in such an action, however, it has to be set in motion by the local authorities. Yours truly Jostein Dragnes on behalf of the “Grupo Montañeros de Mogan” Thank you Jostein for your letter, which I understand you have sent to your local municipality. The Canary News would be interested in trying to figure out ways that we could help with this problem. I believe there are some prominent local businesses too who would be interested in getting involved. What we must do is try to come up with a cohesive strategy. The first hurdle to overcome is try to stop people from staring at the dire global finances so hard that they don’t notice the long term damage that is being done around them, perhaps the only way to do this though is to try and figure out how we all can benefit, not just ecologically but also economically. Any ideas? Edward Timon Editor@TheCanaryNews.com

Canary Islands’ Day (Día de las Canarias)
Wednesday 30 May is a day for all Canarians, and all those who love the Canary Islands, to be proud! Proud of our beautiful islands, our rich heritage, the way of life and the enjoyment that they give to so many people. This is the day when the Canary Islands, a Spanish Autonomous Community, became integrated into the European Union as a peripheral territory deserving of preferential treatment. It marks the anniversary of the autonomous Canary Islands’ Parliament’s first session, which took place on May 30, 1983. The Canary Islands are a long way away from the Spanish Peninsular, yet are very much part of Spain and also part of Europe. It is easy to forget that Gran Canaria is at the southernmost tip of Europe and our closest neighbours are those parts of Africa with a more European outlook. The islands are a bridge between Africa and Europe with a strong link to parts of America. It is worth remembering that the Americas opened their doors wide for the many tens of thousands of Canary Islanders who crossed the Atlantic in times of hardship over the last 500 years looking for a better future. Many of whose descendants have since returned with their children and grandchildren. Europeans, Africans and Americans meet in the Canary Islands, a true intercultural crossroads and an open, welcoming land for the millions of tourists who come to discover the beauty of these islands every year.
2012
Diamond Jubilee Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. To mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are visiting England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2012. Other members of the Royal Family are also travelling throughout the United Kingdom and overseas this year.
The Central Weekend to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place from Saturday 2 June to Tuesday 5 June 2012, with celebratory activities
throughout the UK, across the Commonwealth and beyond. The Queen has been Head of the Commonwealth since 1952, with 2012 marking the 60th anniversary of this role. Commonwealth Realms and other Commonwealth nations will be creating their own events in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. In addition, they will be represented at, and involved with, the events taking place over the central weekend in the UK. To mark the occasion, the Royal Commonwealth Society is inviting people across the UK and around the world to share their memories and stories of the last 60 years to create a
digital Diamond Jubilee gift for Her Majesty The Queen. The project is set to be the most ambitious digital legacy of the Diamond Jubilee. Find out more on the Jubilee Time Capsule website. JubileeTimeCapsule.org The Big Jubilee Lunch will be a part of the main programme of events. A record number of people are expected to take part, with Big Lunches set to take place on Sunday 3 June in the UK, Commonwealth and other countries. Find out more on the Big Lunch website. TheBigLunch.com Further information is available on TheDiamondJubilee.TheCanaryNews.com We believe that there is likely to be raucous street
parties among the British expat community especially in Puerto Rico, up at Phase 4, home to Kim & Steve’s The Pub and the infamous Highlander, a loftier affair can be found at the top of the hill overlooking Puerto Rico at the Europa Center where there are a number of British held businesses such as the Hideaway Pub, Flicks and The Sports bar. No doubt that shower from Barbacoa will be trying on a crown and a giggle too. If you are up Las Palmas way then The British Club must be the place to go, to ensure a rather more refined crowd, an excellent sit down dinner and the most traditional celebration of the British Monarch, Gawd bless ‘er!
Many cultural activities and celebrations are arranged for Canary Islands’ Day each year. Schools make a special point of teaching children about the rich history and culture of the Canary Islands and organise parties and events for children in the days before the special date. Many people hold private parties at home or in restaurants on the evening of May 29. It is a time for great celebration and joy. Now for the history and geography lessons. The Canary Islands consist of seven inhabited islands off the coast of Africa, which are: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera. There is also the Chinijo Archipelago, which includes the tiny islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. Although these islands form an autonomous community within Spain, they are closer to Morocco and the Western Sahara. The Romans too were aware of the Canary Islands, but they remained independent until the Spanish invasion of the islands in 1402, when the islands became part of the Kingdom of Castile in 1495. This is a day when we celebrate with pride and wish to share just a taste of these wonderful islands with our visitors, as well as those who live and work here.. © Barrie Mahoney [Read Barrie’s regular column ‘Twitters From The Atlantic’ on P.14]

CANARY ISLANDS DAY - THE WOOL FESTIVAL

THE WOOL
(FIESTA D Caideros, Gáldar If you are looking for a truly authentic Canarian experience, away from the beaches, pizza restaurants, Irish bars, time-share sellers and loud music of the south, then there is only one place to go this Canaries day, Caideros near Gáldar.
Though it can be done by public transport, you may be better off hiring a car and making a real adventure of it, perhaps even staying overnight. Tourists may also be able to book bus excursions to the area direct from your hotel, though this can sometimes be expensive. The celebrations in honour of St. Joseph of Caideros are held, on Canaries Day (Día de las Canarias) in this tiny traditional village near the town of Gáldar in the north west of Gran Canaria. The Wool Festival (Fiesta de Lana), now in its eighteenth year, marks one of the most authentic celebrations of Canary Island culture you are ever likely to find anywhere. It combines some of the most deeply rooted island traditions and a tribute to the people who keep the customs and skills of these islands alive for the benefit and enrichment of future generations. It is an extraordinary event. The mayor of Gáldar,
Theodore Monsoon Sosa presented a general invitation to anyone who would like to participate in the festivities, and discover a side of Canarian culture that many may have thought was long gone. The municipality of Gáldar is working hard to have the event officially declared as having “Special Regional Tourist Interest”. He has been working to better promote the Medianías’ Tourism, Culture and Festivals through a project to compile and digitise all information and documentation to do with the events surrounding this celebration. In an effort to secure this official sanction of the importance of protecting the area’s cultural heritage as one of the last living examples of much of pre-industrial and pretourist Canarian life. Along with the ‘Mountain Water Cultural Association’ (Asociación Cultural Montaña el Agua) Gáldar City Council has agreed to more fully participate in the organization of these
parties with the focus on this most traditional celebration, La Fiesta de La Lana, alongside the national celebration of the Canary Islands. “This is a newly formed partnership, which brings with it many young people wishing to keep this great holiday tradition alive,” said the mayor. The Association’s president, Jose Mendoza Rivero, spoke emotionally of some of the events taking place between 18th May &16th June. More extensive than in previous years, the plans for the 2012 celebrations feature a huge array of various traditional pastimes, sports and crafts. This year President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, is to read the proclamation on 26 May (The Proclamation is the traditional official opening statement to any large public event) and also in this programme there will be lectures (of course in Spanish) on topics of interest to these islands. Sunday May 20th saw the re-inauguration of the traditional market held in the main village square where authentic examples of local

handicrafts and produce can be found, “an opportunity to show visitors the wealth of our land” in addition to the unique beauty of the landscape Caideros.
The Main Event WOOL FESTIVAL May 30th 2012 Traditional shepherd’s bells are the starring centre piece of this year’s events at the Fiesta De Lana and we were shown a wide array of examples, as a symbol of the sounds crucial for pastors who want to locate their sheep. Interestingly we learned that each specific type of bell produces its own unique sound allowing a shepherd to audibly locate the various animals in the herd. Those animals that frequent the outer edges of the group are given one type of bell, while those who more readily lead the group are given another and so on so that a shepherd can discern an audible and detailed map of the positions of the members of the flock even without being able to see them. The early morning of May 30th will loudly ring first thing with the sound of herds
brought from the Cortijo Maninidra and next from the shearing and milking followed by the various tastings of gofio and milk. From 11.30 am, the folk show and crafts exhibits will open with various tastings of canaries produce and displays of ancient skills such as the ‘salto del pastor’ or pastor’s leap, the traditional Canarian art of essentially pole vaulting over rough mountain terrain. Expect a huge array of traditional Canarian music, clothing, dancing and drinking as well as the Canarian martial arts of Stick Fighting and Wrestling.
To get there by the most direct bus: Take the 150 [Faro de Maspalomas - Las Palmas de G.C. – Gáldar] which leaves at 5mins past every hour in the morning from 9am onwards (and can also be picked up from the San Fernando roundabout on Ave. De Tirajana) The trip to Galdar takes just over an hour and a half. You’ll need to take a short taxi ride from there to the village of Caideros itself. The last 150 leaves Gáldar
at 2.15pm but there are plenty of alternative buses that take you back to Las Palmas (San Telmo) from which buses run pretty much 24hours back down to the south. For more info check www. globalsu.net
By Car: Get a map or GPS to be sure, however the route is mostly quite simple: Taking the GC-1 motorway almost to Las Palmas, then the GC-2 to Gáldar you are heading towards the GC-220. Shouldn’t take much more than an hour. Cars can be hired here for as little as 20€ a day.
Staying the night: There are numerous hotels in Gáldar which is only a short taxi ride away from Caideros. However for a truly awesome experience we would recommend taking the half hour taxi ride through some of the most stunning tropical countryside in the world to the area of Agaete and a stay in the sumptuous surrounds of The Finca Las Longueras Rural Hotel. See page 6 for more details...

Lottery prizes between separated spouses My ex-husband won the lottery when we were still married. He said nothing about it and asked me for a divorce. Later I found out about the prize. Do I have any rights? Following recent case law, it could well be possible to bring a lawsuit against your ex-husband. Though you now have separation of property, the courts do recognise ownership rights of the ex spouse in certain circumstances. For example, the courts consider that if it is proven that there really was a ‘community of property’ between spouses, for instance if they held their money in joint accounts or used each other’s funds in different ways, then it is appropriate to deem there to be a demonstrable community of goods, even if they each
owned separate property, they have acted as a community of property. By applying such doctrine to this case, the courts could recognize you as having the right to enjoy half of the lottery prize, despite the fact that you have been divorced, as at the time the prize was obtained you were still married. You should take specific advice from a lawyer who can look at the details of the case properly because there may well be a legal basis to litigate, on which basis your ex-husband might agree prior to you ever having to reach a courtroom. In the most usual matrimonial regime, the prize would belong to both spouses equally.
Beware using the Internet Can I be accused of child pornography for accidentally visiting an inappropriate page
displaying minors on the Internet? Is it a crime? It can be. The Penal Code says that this simple act can be punished by a penalty of between three months and one year imprisonment or for people who possess pornographic material for their own uses, in which minors or incompetents appear, a penalty of 6 months to two years,
Receiving publicity on mobile phone
Occasionally I get mails and business advertising on my mobile phone when I have not authorized it. Is that legal? Currently, the law expressly prohibits the sending of advertising or promotional e-mails or other equivalent electronic media (such as short messages-SMS-and multimedia messages-MMS) that have not previously been requested or expressly
authorized by the owner/ contract holder or consignee of the mobile phone or terminal on which it is received.
Bad installation of new furniture. Fitters installed my furniture incorrectly. Can I make a claim? If the installation was included in the sale price, the unit would not be deemed to be properly delivered if it was damaged by bad installation.
Extracurricular expenses My ex-wife has custody of our
son. Without consulting me, she signed him up to extracurricular activities that we had not previously agreed on, and for which she now expects me to pay. Can I refuse to pay the expenses? In principle you can refuse them. The monthly court sanctioned maintenance payments agreed are usually meant to cover, within ordinary expenses, extracurricular activities carried out by the child. However, if your ex-wife has subscribed your son to
an extracurricular activity, she can not require you to pay it separately over and above the amount set, as the maintenance expenditure is planned or should have been set in the monthly payment. As for extraordinary expenses, you should bear half of those expenses properly and previously agreed, unless they are urgent expenditures and there’s no time to agree, but in no case should extracurricular activities be included within this.

What a difference a weekend makes
What a difference a weekend makes. Prior to the weekend of the 5 and 6th May all the issues in the eurozone had in the main been factored into exchange rates and the euro was doing quite well against the dollar and sterling. Then bang France elects a socialist government and Greece has a change and threatens to withdraw all austerity measures. The markets did not like that and the uncertainty it creates. Just to go back prior to the panic on Friday the 4th ECB president called for a “growth compact” as an alternative to
simply austerity so the market thought the Eurozone was progressing and in fact the euro gained half a cent. Investors liked the sound of his proposal then realised it would need all 17 countries to buy into the proposal, a difficult task even at the best of times. At the end of the same week finalised Euroland PMI’s came out with Germany the only country breaking the magical 50 figure and has since seen good statistics for the last 3 months as exports to non euro countries helped Germany produce decent statistics. In fairness however the retail sales figures were slightly better than forecast and rising during the month by .3% and down only .2% on the year.
Then it all changes and the big concern is Greece, no majority, no coalition, lots of uncertainty and threats to withdraw from the euro. All this in turn sent the FTSE 100 tumbling to its lowest for closing level this year. Greece if it is prepared to continue on the road to fiscal stability are due to receive further funds from the eurozone whose leaders decided to “drip feed” Greece to make sure it sticks to its pledges and uses the money wisely, now if it does not carry through its agreed measures then the next tranch of money will not be released and Greece will not be able to pay returns on any of its bonds, pay its staff and effectively becomes bankrupt. The next stage on is the probable exit from the euro and its a question on who makes what decision. Will the politics be a Greek withdrawal or will the eurozone simply advise them to walk away!!! Nobody really knows what would follow and what possible damage would be done to the euro
currency. Who is prepared to take that risk? Fitch has come out and said a Greek exit would be manageable and would not end the single currency, who is the gambler? Spain has also seen a fair amount of pain recently and one of its big banks appears to be in trouble with the Spanish government now saying it will bail it out. Is this the beginning of a new Banking crisis in Spain? The government however is trying to enter into talks with investors about creating a new holding company for Spanish Property debt. This would mean it having its portfolio revalued, set aside and then sold deflating the Spanish property market further. The UK is not exempt from trouble with retail sales numbers poorer than expected for April, the wet weather was to blame.... Unemployment is also expected to rise in the coming years, inflation still higher than its target and the Bank of England at its monthly meeting decided to keep interest rates on hold and
no further printing of money, it seems they are concerned with the possibility of inflation rising again. With profits of doom hovering over the euro and the Chinese now pulling away from buying Government debt expect to see continued weakness and even Interbank tipping above 1.25 to the pound

Pride, Beef or Fall? We can offer you the best opportunities since more then 25 years ! PLAYA DEL INGLÉS NEAR YUMBO
This page was originally meant to be a lovely positive final closing report dedicated to the 2012 Maspalomas Gay Pride and all that it stood for and achieved. However as the final foam party ended 7 days of hedonistic indulgence, many questions remained… ...why had it occurred at all? Was it just for fun? Why did such a committed, hard working, and on occasions maniacal, group of volunteers spend so much energy, and in some cases even endanger their health, to benefit a distinct part of the local economy and its periphery, a few hotels and in particular the businesses of one specific shopping centre, the majority of whom, in turn themselves, seemed to give little in return other than to take benefit from alcohol sales, promote themselves, compete shamelessly against each other and even try to compete with the actual main show by blasting out loud music and taking little interest in the event beyond what they could get from it? Too many seemed to simply proffer, in the words of Douglas Adams, a “so long and thanks for all the fish” kind of attitude to the entire production. Pride? A bloody shame! As a local community newspaper we do whatever we can to provide a voice for anyone who is working for the common good, the local community, the English (and Spanish) speakers who live, work on and visit this island paradise and we are most proud to prominently supply many, many thousands of euros worth of publicity and coverage of such events and get the privilege of attaching our name to them. Our responsibility is to the community at large, and in particular those who most
need a helping hand. Can anyone tell us, has pride achieved anything of the sort? Sure it is great to celebrate, but if those celebrations are not to become hollow or meaningless we must ask ourselves what it is we celebrate and why, and whether that celebration is an expression of growth and goodness or if it is indeed just partying for party’s sake. Does Pride actually help anybody? Does it maintain respect and support from those who benefit most from it? What is it for? Who goes to it and why? Can it be improved? Can it be more? The original worldwide Pride movement was bourn out of a great social need; it addressed many important issues of discrimination, violence, intolerance and ignorance. It was started by a group of people who were no longer willing to be marginalized by, so called, mainstream society. It was their public statement of being proud to be who they were and not allow others to tell them who they should be instead. Showing the world that they were not only colourful and creative, but they were competent and intelligent and had real things to say about ideas that really matter more than who so-and-so decides they want to kiss. As it became more widely known the great ‘Pride Movement’ used its success and influence to help change the way the world not only viewed gay people but also how it treated issues that affected gay people, straight people, black people, white people, party people, working people, good people, bad people, sick people, vulnerable people or those who were simply alone or mistreated or distressed. Pride became a symbol for
standing up for yourself and for those around you and not accepting the selfish, self interested ways of the past. A way to proudly step in to a future that could benefit all. Pride celebrated life, and in doing so helped support and raise funds and awareness for many causes that were connected in one way or another to those in our society and all around the world who most in need of understanding. I ask myself, despite all the wonderful hospitality during this year’s Pride event; what did it achieve? Who have we helped? Why should we continue? Is Basshunter the one who has most directly benefited? The week following, we were invited to check out an event that is twice as old as Maspalomas Pride, it boasts a similar number of guests, albeit from much further a field, and is staged in a highly prominent building in one of the top European cultural capitals. The secret to its success? Well, for a start, it isn’t celebrating just for the sake of celebrating; it is doing some really good work, for the people who really need it most. They have a message, and want the world to sing about that message, to celebrate LIFE. They started simply by funding the work of local organisations helping people with AIDS/ HIV and then over the last 20 years have grown in to one of the most prominent charity fundraisers in the world. Now I don’t want anyone to think that we wish to try and recreate their success. That would surely be impossible. However there are lessons we can learn. Lessons that will not only help to ensure that we all get the best out of our annual event here, but which will help to secure its future, its growth and its ability to really
become a force for good. There are lessons that can be taken from their event which can help us put Pride back at the centre of what we do and why we do it. When I say ‘WE’ I mean the people who benefit from living, working, visiting or even simply dreaming about this beautiful place. All of us. Not just one group or another. Over the next few editions we plan to look into some of the major successes enjoyed by the Life Ball in Vienna, and talk to some of the people who have seen it grow and who understand that business, community, government, celebrity, media and charity all must work together to create real successes on such a scale and to make real changes for the good of those who most need our help. We want to find the meaning of Pride, and then express it on a national and international level. And we would love to hear from you. If you have anything to say on the subject please email us here on

Clothes Shopping in
Clothes Gran Canaria Guru
Expert advice on everything you need to know about living and working in Gran Canaria. To the untrained eye shopping in Gran Canaria can seem quite monotonous – large shopping centres full of all the same shops and all the same merchandise. However, like most things on this cheeky little island, with a little bit of effort shopping here can be as good as London, Paris or Milan. Well, almost.
In fairness, for hasslefree everything you need under one roof shopping, the shopping centres are the place to go. Almost all of them have Zara and Mango for the ladies and Springfield and Jack Jones for the gentlemen, along with a variety of other Spanish/Canarian favourites like Burbujitas for surfwear, Natura for ethnic clothes and jewellery, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius and Promod for urban chic, Bijou Brigitte for accessories and Carolina Boix for cheap shoes. Try El Muelle in Santa Catalina (Las Palmas) for all of the above plus Animal,
Atlantico in Vecindario for Foscos (a great shop for elegant leather shoes – see below), Siete Palmas for Friday’s Project (a Diesel stockist and some bargain own label clothes) and Las Arenas for all the favourites plus beach views and Las Terrazas for all the outlet shops and of course Primark For those of you who prefer the great outdoors, Mesa y Lopez prides itself on being the main shopping street in Las Palmas, mainly because it boasts the largest Corte Inglés department store in Spain. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try El Corte Inglés. However, for an all round, enjoyable al fresco

IGIC rise won’t stop tourism
The Deputy Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands, Ricardo Fernandez, said last week that the rise of 2% rise in IGIC (VAT) due in July from 5% to 7% will have no “significance” in the choice of holiday destinations for next summer’s tourists. He acknowledged that the decision was taken for “necessary” reasons because of having to cope with the situation caused by the €800million cut in state subsidies from Madrid announced last month. This summer, the regional government has estimated a 6 percent drop in tourist arrivals, mainly English (-7%) and Spaniards (-9%), while they expect a slight increase in the German market (3%) . According to Fernandez, the central government’s decision to eliminate subsidies to airlines is one of the main factors causing the loss of a million flight sales
over the previous year. “Now we have no advantage when competing with destinations that still have them such as Greece, which still provides large subsidies, and Egypt where they also meet a significant proportion of the costs of bringing people to the country. This measure is supposed to be aimed at companies but determines whether a destination may or may not have good numbers over the summer” he commented. Fernández also believes that the mainland market will have problems to overcome as the woes caused by the closure of airline Spanair has left “great uncertainty” about the economic situation here “that will make many people spend their holidays at home.” What do you think? shopping experience Triana is definitely the place to go. On Calle Triana you can, not surprisingly, find all of the above shops, but head off into the side streets and there are a plethora of independent boutiques and nik-nak shops to challenge even the most extreme shoppers amongst us. Admittedly, some are pricey but there are some real jewels to be found. Triana is also home to H&M, M&S food and Desigual, fairly new additions to the GC shopping experience and ones we are all still slightly chuffed about.
Shoes It is true. The Spanish love their shoes. It will come as no surprise then that there are zillions of shoe shops selling fashionable shoes at bargain prices. It is not worth listing the possible shoe shops you could browse as you can’t turn a corner without finding yourself in one. But be warned. Most of the shoes are synthetic fabrics which is why they are cheap. Leather shoes at affordable prices are harder to come by. Yes, there are plenty of shops that sell leather shoes but the prices rocket skywards. El Corte Inglés stock quality leather shoes, as do Lopez (Mesa y Lopez and Calle Triana) and Foscos (see

above) but it may be worth waiting for the sales before moving in for the kill. Sales and the best places to find a bargain Christmas sales normally start around 7th January and summer sales around 8th July. Reductions are generally between 20% and 70% so you can grab some real bargains. The first day of the sales is normally hellish after which you can browse the rails
at your own pace. For year round bargains try the outlet stores Benetton in Alcampo, and Springfield in La Ballena in Escaleritas and the many in Las Terrazas where you can find Nike, Levis... You might also pick up a bargain in the Fisaldo shopping fare which takes place in Infecar in Escaleritas in June. Local shops empty the previous season’s clothes, furniture and nik-naks into this four day bonanza. Please bear
in mind that generally there is an awful lot of rubbish to trawl through, but for the very shrewd and very patient you can find some real treats. It’s a bit like TK Maxx on steroids. Just search google for Fisaldo 2012 for more info. If you have any secret gems that you want to tell everyone about please pop by the grancanariaguru website and leave a comment on the shopping page.

Ask Keith
Some parents find it hard to keep their children in hand, it is in the nature of the child to be constantly testing limits, finding how far they can go and trying to take it one step further all the time, many parents contact our counseling department asking for advice on this matter.
Dear Keith, My 10 year old son Fran is getting very badly behaved, he won’t do anything I tell him and it’s a constant fight with everything, I’ve tried threatening him with many different things but this doesn’t work, what can I do ? (Luis Fernando, Las Palmas) Dear Luis Fernando, There is one important rule regarding threats, never threaten a child with something that you don’t plan to do or is impossible to enforce. Whenever you threaten them with being punished without watching the TV or not going out with their friends, etc. make sure that you plan to enforce that action, if you threaten them with something and they disobey, then you must keep your word and punish them otherwise, they won’t take you seriously. Dear Keith, I have lots of problems getting my 12 years old son Andres to tidy his bedroom, we spend a lot of time arguing, I tell him it’s untidy and he always argues it’s tidy enough. What can I do? (Angela, Maspalomas) Dear Angela, Children are very intelligent when it comes to getting out of things, I think you need to be less ambiguous with your comments and be more direct, that way he can’t use excuses. Instead of saying your room is untidy say “You’ve left dirty clothes on the floor” or “There are 2 empty packets of biscuits on your desk” that way he won’t be able to argue with you. Dear Keith, I have two children aged 9 and 10, I would like to set some rules for them as they are getting to an age where I don’t want to lose control of them specially with their chores and responsibilities, which is the best approach? (Yanira, Arucas) Dear Yanira, The best approach is to sit down with your children and plan the responsibilities together, set down the rules and agree on the punishments together, if your children are part of the rules they will be more willing to stick to them. Remember not only to plan punishments but also to plan rewards for when things are done well, try and make the rewards non economical, a good idea for a reward is a family outing at the weekend if all the weekly chores have been fulfilled.

A good time-organisation maximis Most students don’t understand about time management, this means that they struggle to keep up with their schoolwork and find it very hard to balance time between school obligations, family obligations, family time and time with their friends. Today students also have other distractions which make studying efficiently a harder goal; social networks, new technologies or an evergrowing number of television channels are just a few among this list. Many students get very stressed when they struggle to study efficiently, many times this is also due to them having some very poor study skills, unfortunately schools don’t help very much as enough time is not usually spent on this matter in class. These students tend to waste a lot of time instead of using it wisely and they are very likely to have low grades, which usually end up making them frustrated because they want to do better. It’s important to find a solution to this problem in time to avoid them reaching the point of giving up with their studies. The key to success when studying is to have a good study plan, this should include when and how long you will study, if you haven’t got a good study plan you most likely won’t study efficiently. These plans must be tailor made, there is no standard plan which applies to all students as every student needs to spend more time on some skills than others and not every student needs to spend the same amount of time studying. For this reason it’s important to develop your

own schedule, don’t try and use someone else’s schedule, what works great for one student might be a complete waste of time for another. A study plan should always be flexible and subject to change until you have finally set up a plan that works well for you, remember that an efficient schedule should include: ➤ Classes ➤ Homework ➤ Extra-classes ➤ Extracurricular activities ➤ Family time ➤ Free time Remember to plan plenty of rest time and sleep time, don’t try and study for more than an hour and a half at a time and plan rest periods between study blocks. Try and find a quiet, out of-the-way place to study and make sure you limit the distractions such as televisions, mobile phones and computers and definitely no social networking during study periods. Make sure you have adequate lighting and that you are comfortable but not too comfortable or you might fall asleep. When you are studying it

once makes it impossible to memorize it all, actually, you hardly retain anything at all. It’s better to study days before going over it multiple times as this helps you to learn the material better, specially with subjects with a lot of theory like history. Remember to have regular breaks throughout your study period though and take that time to relax, move around and have some fun. You will study better if you are feeling relaxed. Sleep well before exams so your mind will be alert during the exam, on the day of the exam make sure you have a positive attitude, it’s important to think positive. Sometimes people find it easier to study with a friend rather than by themselves, this can be very positive for some people while other find it de-concentrating, studying with a friend can make time pass quicker although remember that you’re there to study no to chat and play around. The Lantana is a very popular plant in Canary gardens. Some species of Lantana are very invasive and in many places they are considered a problem, in many states of the U.S.A. for example they are trying to eliminate them. Lantana leaves are quite irritant and can be poisonous to most animals even though their fruit is a delicacy for many birds, which also distribute their seeds. Lantanas are used as honey plants for beekeepers, specially the Spanish Flag variety (red and yellow). Lantana berries are edible when ripe though like many fruit they are mildly poisonous if eaten when still green. If your pet eats the leaves of the lantana it will cause internal hemorrhage and renal failure, and if not caught in time it will inevitably cause the death of your pet. Keep it well away from horses, as they are very sensitive to its toxin. It should also be kept well away from younger children. ©www.canaryzoo.com

Budgies are very colourful and attractive birds because they are very sociable and relatively easy to look after. Although they can be kept alone they prefer the company of other birds preferably of their own species although they will usually live well with other species of birds, as they are very sociable.

Budgies can be kept indoors in a large wire cage with a plastic base so it can be cleaned easily. Make sure they have horizontal bars to allow climbing and bars should be no more than 12 mm. apart; parakeet cages are not suitable as they can escape. They can also be kept outside in an aviary, which allows them to fly around properly. Make sure it is protected from cats, owls or hawks. Provide a shallow bath and toys for your budgie to play with, they adore a mirror and will play with it for hours.
FEEDING
A good quality budgerigar mix is the best option, avoid giving them parakeet mixtures as they contain a large number of seeds they won’t eat and will be wasted. A cuttlefish bone is a good source of calcium it will also supply them with a necessary vitamins and will kelp them grind their beak down. Fresh drinking water should always be available.

Twitters from the Atlantic
Extreme sport or natural selection? by Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author. There have been a number of very sad cases recently of mostly British tourists falling off hotel balconies to their deaths in Spain, the Balearic and the Canary Islands. A recent tragic case of a 22-year-old British man plunging 50ft to his death from the balcony of a holiday apartment in Gran Canaria spurred me on to ask a few more questions about what appears to be a growing phenomena in holiday resorts. I began to wonder if hotel balconies in Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands were somehow more dangerous than others. I have stayed in quite a few hotels with balconies in Spain over the years and thought they were no worse than those in Greece, Italy, Portugal or, indeed, the UK. Maybe ancient hotel and apartment buildings, poorly converted in previous years, were to blame? Maybe they are poorly maintained or lack basic safety features? It seemed strange that so many of these lethal falls from balconies related to older teenagers and young people in their twenties,
yet thankfully very rarely to unsupervised toddlers and very young children, which would be easier to understand in some ways. Surely, if balconies were so dangerous, there would have been more accidents relating to this younger age group? Yet, I can hardly remember the last time such an accident involving young children occurred in any Spanish resort. Maybe I was missing something and there were other reasons to be considered, which I had overlooked. The answer to my questions came in the form of a conversation with a friendly police officer whom I was talking to recently. He drew my attention to another factor that I had not previously considered. It seems that young, mainly British, holidaymakers when staying in hotels with a swimming pool, have invented a new and dangerous ‘sport’. This game is referred to as ‘balconing’ by the Spanish, and is the name given to a relatively new and dangerous activity. This new game is usually played by young holidaymakers, who have left their brains behind at Gatwick Airport, encouraged by their friends, and often high on alcohol and drugs, who decide to scramble up the sides of high buildings and then proceed to jump from one balcony to another at hotels and apartments. Some of the successful attempts are even filmed and proudly displayed on YouTube and other social media sites. Some even deliberately jump from very high hotel balconies in attempts to land in the swimming pool below,
rather in the style of Batman, but with much less purpose. This temporary euphoria often ends in disaster, as the youngsters forget all sense of reality, and as they realise too late that they are not Batman, usually fail to hit the intended spot, and lose their lives, or are permanently injured, as a result. Young Swedes, Irish and Germans are now also getting in on the act, but it is the Brits who, so far, hold the dubious gold medal in foolishness. In the good old days, it used to be young British men, affectionately referred to worldwide as ‘lager louts’. These lovingly named young people were famed for their binge drinking, colourful language and challenging behaviour. Their charming lack of social awareness and lack of academic prowess made such a fascinating, yet unforgettable impression on holidaymakers in the past. Now it seems that we have merely moved on to a more modern phase, where some young holidaymakers merely leave holidaymakers with memories of a nasty mess in and around the swimming pool. How very inconsiderate. Some cultures have rituals and traditions for their young men before they pass into adulthood. These ‘rights of passage’ are often dangerous, life threatening activities designed to test the strength and ‘gene worthiness’ of members of the species. It is a process by which the weakest and more intellectually challenged members of the species are weeded out. So is ‘balconing’ an extreme sport or just a basic form of natural selection?

part 1
The moody verbs (subjunctive)
by Theresa Coe language exchange group (LEG) co-ordinator I´m not going to pretend this won´t hurt a bit, because it will. Nonetheless, the time has come to take a look at the subjunctive verb-form, which can only be described as moody, because it´s all about how we feel (NOT a verb tense).
How to form it To get the right endings take the yo (‘I’ or first person) form of the present tense verb ➤ if the original verb ends in –ar: swap the last vowel (o/a) for e ➤ if the original verb ends in –er or –ir: swap the last vowel (o/e/i) for a This is the same rule as giving commands in the negative or ‘usted’ (formal) way, as outlined in lesson 60, so if you can do that, you´re halfway there. For example: TENER (to have): As it ends in –ER, we need to swap the ‘e’ to an ‘a’ and add normal present-tense endings. present tense ‘yo’ form = tengo (I have), so subjunctive form is: tenga, tengas, tenga, tengamos, tengan. (I have, you have, he/she has, we have, they have) As the first and third person
Spot the reading material! Vegueta language exchange 2012
verbs are the same, TENGA could mean ‘I have’ or ‘he/she/ it/you (formal) has’. To avoid confusion we often include the word YO (I) if we´re talking about ourself: Es malo que yo no tenga trabajo (it´s bad that I don´t have work). SALIR (to go out): normal present tense ‘yo’ form is irregular: salgo (I go out), so the subjunctive follows suit: salga, salgas, salga, salgamos, salgan (I go out, you go out, he/she goes out, we go out, they go out). E.g: Quiero que salgas esta noche (I want that you go out tonight - we´d say: I want YOU to go out tonight) For example: hablan inglés (a fact, so normal verb-form), but dudo que hablen inglés (I doubt that they speak English)
When to use it The subjunctive voice is used to express:
1) Doubt, including possibility: Es posible que venga (it´s possible that he´ll come - lit: is possible that he comes). The present tense ‘yo’ form of VENIR (to come) is vengo, so the subjunctive form is venga (o/e/i goes to a). 2) Emotions and feelings: Estoy triste que mi madre no pueda estar aquí (I´m sad that my mother can´t be here). Present tense I can = puedo, so subjunctive form = pueda (e goes to a). Estamos felices que estés mejor (we´re happy that you´re better). To be is ESTAR, so ‘you are’ is estés instead of estás. 2) Desires: Quiero un novio que me ayude con el español (I want a boyfriend that would help me with Spanish). To help is AYUDAR so ‘a’ goes to ‘e’ (ayude instead of ayuda for the first and third person
endings). Espero que lo pases bien aquí (I hope that you have a good time here). To have a good time is ‘to pass it well’: pasar/lo bien, so we change the ‘a’ to an ‘e’. Literally: I hope that it you pass well. 4) Negative stuff: Spot the difference between: NORMAL: Creo que le gusta el vino ¿no? (I think that he/ she likes wine, right?) SUBJUNCTIVE: no creo que le guste el vino (I don´t think that he likes the wine) In the second example, we could say that some doubt has entered the equation – and the
subjunctive voice is all about uncertainty or emotion. You could avoid the subjunctive by saying: creo que no le gusta (I think that he doesn´t like it - first part affirmative so normal verb endings are used). 5) Impersonal expressions with ‘that’: Es estupendo que aprendas español (it´s great that you learn Spanish). To learn is aprender, so in the subjunctive form we change the ‘e’ to an ‘a’. Es terrible que no te paguen (it´s terrible that they don´t pay you). To pay is pagar,
so here we change the ‘a’ to an ‘e’. The ‘u’ is only there to keep the ‘g’ sound hard as ‘ge’ or ‘gi’ sound like an English h, e.g: la gente (la HENTE; the people). Here, you can avoid the subjunctive by taking out ‘that’ and using a simpler structure of ‘it´s’ + adjective + full verb: es estupendo aprender español (it´s great to study Spanish), or es terrible no pagar (it´s terrible not to pay). Practice makes perfect For a clear explanation of this verb mood, and lots of quizzes to practice using it, check out: www.studyspanish.com/lessons/subj1.htm

With this year’s celebration of the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee all eyes are on the British capital and of course its style. Britain has nurtured and continues to nurture a huge array of artistic talents including musicians, designers, and highly influential people all impacting the way we dress. Who doesn’t like a bit of Kate Moss style in their wardrobe? Here in The Canaries there has been a huge rise in the use of fascinators and special hats for weddings and formal occasions, with much of the inspiration having come from modern British royalty, especially since the wedding last year and the emergence of a youthful, chic and stylish Princess Catherine who has become a fashion icon in her own right. Canarian designer Gabriel Croissier’s show last summer,

From Punks to Mods, from Lady Di to the Spice Girls, British fashion has always been highly acclaimed for its “fearlessness”. Brits are not afraid of experimenting with clothes and accessories, mixing and matching different patterns, prints and styles . Vintage style pieces and accessories are also a big part of the British look, especially when combined with modern pieces. The trick is not to look too polished and to have a slightly eccentric and fun “thrown-on” feel to what you wear.
all these years, British Style still has that element of punk mixed with the equestrian left in it. Never look too “done.” Keep your hair messy or your eye makeup slightly smudgy to get a real festival feel. Don’t worry if you have a run in your tights- wear them anyway! Mix and match unexpected patterns and textures for an “I just threw this on” look. Be brave and have fun! The great thing about British style is that Brits are not afraid to have fun with their

THE SEARCH FOR PARADISE
TheCanaryNews.com
Myth of Par
Myths of Paradise Heracles (Hercules) is the primary protagonist in an epic tale which likely transpired on Gran Canaria. Born of the moon-virgin Alcmene (Power of the Moon) whose consort didn’t lie with her until after her Divine child was born, Heracles means Glory of Hera, and he was nursed by the Great Goddess herself on the same milk that spurted from her breasts to form the Milky Way. Heracles was the earthly incarnation of Zeus. He wandered the ancient Middle Sea and beyond in a quest
to earn immortality. He was worshipped 4000 years ago as the man who died and rose again like the sun – The Savior of the Universe. The Twelve Labours of Heracles were revealed in the Homeric Poems told and finally coalesced and penned a little less than 3000 years ago. Of course similar tales have been told with eerie resemblance in other religions from Krishna to Buddha to Osiris and Jesus, the basic traits of the story of Heracles are all present. During his eleventh labour Heracles visited Paradise on Earth to retrieve golden apples of immortality from the sacred Garden of
Hesperides. The mythologies of most religions usually include a place of eternal harmony and bliss where life exists on an idyllic dimension. Very often the setting is a luxuriant garden bathed in a temperate climate, steadfastly avoided by storms and drought, where birds, bees, and beasts abound in tranquil peace, and humans contemplate life and godliness. From the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to the Sumerian Blessed Fields of Bliss, to the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Garden of Eden – most cultures embrace a Paradise On Earth. Ancient texts draw wordmaps of where the Garden
of Eden and The Garden of Hesperides might exist. Many point beyond the Pillars of Hercules (known now as the Straits of Gibraltar), then tack a course south west to the end of the known world. A thousand kilometers later the horizon reveals what appears to be a pack of dogs sprinting upon cats paws of the Atlantic. This mirage is surely our volcanic archipelago, the Canarii (the dogs), home to The Garden of Hesperides itself, no less, located on Gran Canaria (the big dog) – the mythic yet oh, so real – land of eternal spring: Paradise On Earth. As the enchanting tale goes (there are several
variations), here lies the garden of immortality in the Far West, belonging to Mother Hera who sometimes took the form of Hespera, the Evening Star (Venus). Golden fruit of eternal life grew on the Hersperian apple tree (a wedding gift to Hera from no less a guest than Mother Earth, ‘Gaia’) guarded by Hera’s sacred serpent. Ladon was a ghastly, multiheaded hydra (nasty snake, lush garden – ring a bell?) who was the protector of the immortal fruit (ding, ding, ding, ding). The task for Heracles was to snatch fruit from the tree around which said serpent was entwined. By
happenstance, Atlas took immense pride in being overseer of Hera’s divine garden, though he was mightily immersed in holding earth upon his shoulders. Heracles had been advised not to pluck the apples himself, but to employ Atlas to do the deed. Atlas was thusly convinced since Heracles offered to relieve him of the fantastic burden (hefting the awkward, backbreaking celestial globe). As the tale is told, Heracles dispels of Ladon with an arrow, undertakes the shouldering of earth for Atlas who further enlists his nymph daughters (yes, The Hesperides) to stealth away three golden

s adise apples for Heracles. Poor Atlas was not keen to retake his place as earthly hoister, but was tricked by Heracles to do so. Now our hero has the immortal fruit and the Eleventh Labour has been satisfied. In anticlimactic fashion, a mourning Hera heaves her darling dead Ladon to the heavens and creates a constellation: The Serpent! Ta-dah! What does this ancient tale contribute to our Search for Paradise? Firstly, archeomythology tells of a Paradise On Earth – the one and only land of eternal spring. Nearly all of the counting and recounting of the related mythologies
point to The Canary Islands as the geographical source of this magical (yet very real) location. A quick perusal of our seven primary islands makes abundantly clear that the environmental actualities prevalent on and around the island of Gran Canaria make her by far the finest candidate for Paradise On Earth. Secondly, not only is the requirement for the world’s most wonderful weather the finest on Gran Canaria, but the earth itself – the richness of her soil – would be mandatory to qualify for THE Paradise on Earth. And so it is. The Canaries were born from the depths of the Atlantic, not mere break-
aways from the shelf of the African continent. Even though the heart of the archipelago lies only 300 kilometers off the Moroccan coastline, the surrounding waters are remarkably deep. Our dramatic island terrain and her geological magnificence were born of magma erupting farther below the surface of our ocean than she has risen above it (2500 meters). Over millions of years these eruptions continued until finally cresting the sea surface and rising layer by layer above sea level to soar (with aching infrequency) toward the clouds; rising up from the deepest material,
out of some of the deepest waters on earth’s crust, coincidentally also the richest and most robust anywhere on the planet. This volcanic substrate (lava becomes basalt: a hard, dense, dark volcanic rock composed chiefly of plagioclase, augite, and magnetite) provides an excellent base for the establishment of fertile top soil (primarily sand and compost). The eruptions also gifted us with great underground caverns, nature’s splendid cisterns of water. Unlike our human made reservoirs, these vast underground cauldrons of life-giving-elixir are
not susceptible to the sun’s immense powers of evaporation. The porous nature of the volcanic rock along with ideal conditions for sun-free algae and flora serves as a natural, mineral-enhanced, solarprotected filtration system. The waters that lie 50 – 100 meters below our land surface are clean and enriched. What rain does not fall on thirsty topsoil and into reservoirs seeps underground and finds refuge within the interior of the land. Paradise indeed. Paradise On Earth requires the heritage of myth (epochs of verifiability); a year-round fabulous (nigh on
19
perfect) climate; a plethora of pure, cool, accessible, lifegiving water; rich, fertile soil and more. The more includes humans – preferably who understand the sciences of biology, horticulture, and the mysteries of growing world class fruits, vegetable, flowers, trees – the flora that any true Paradise On Earth will unfailingly require. In our next issue of The Canary News, The Search For Paradise visits the veritable resurrection of nothing less than The Garden Of Hesperides and interviews the man and woman who took us back to the garden having brought her back to life.

s e h c e e p S g n i d d We Survival Guide
Public speaking is one of the number one fears in a person’s life. If you’re one of those people then fear not, you’re not alone.
Even famous public speakers get butterflies in their stomach before speaking in front of a crowd. Anyone that has previously made a wedding speech, may remember the nerves leading up to the speeches, and the feeling of wanting it all to be over so you can get on and enjoy the day. Here are some helpful tips to combat those pre-wedding speech nerves, that will help you enjoy the whole day, and at the same time deliver an outstanding speech.
Before the Wedding
Practice the speech at least 5-7 times before the wedding. Start by writing it down word for word, and then practice reading it out loud at least 2-3 times in front of a friend or a mirror. Then make small index cards and write down all the keywords you will need to help you remember the speech. For example if you want to tell a story of when your daughter was born, you could write the word “birth” on the index card. That word should then help you remember the whole story. Using this method you will only need to write down
around 5 to 8 words in order to remember a speech that is 5 to 8 minutes long. Then practice the speech with the index cards another 2-3 times in front of your friend or a mirror. On the wedding day, it should be enough to practice only once in the morning with the index cards and then you should be good to go.
How to overcome the nervousness Whether you are standing at a table or up on a stage; stand straight with equal weight on both feet. Look around at all the guests and establish eye contact before you start. This
will display confidence. If you’re prone to shaky knees then lean onto a table or hold onto something, but don’t sit down. By standing you show the newlyweds your respect and you make yourself visible to the guests. If shaky hands are an issue, then keep them behind your back, leaving the index cards on the table where you can see them. You can also try and hold on to something. If you are very nervous, then you can also try being forthright and tell the guests. You might say something like “I’m not used to public speaking, so please bear with me”. As most people are afraid of public speaking they will understand.

glass to toast the happy couple and wish them the very best for the future. You could also try to be a bit different and read them a poem or a famous quote. If you’re still struggling, here are some tips of what to put in your speech according to your role in the wedding party.
Master of Ceremony Their job is to call for the guest’s attention and either introduces each speaker in turn or just the first speaker The Bride’s Father. They will also finalize the wedding speeches by encouraging the guests to enjoy the rest of the evening.
The Bride’s Father
The beginning of your speech is when people are focusing on you and really hearing what you say. A good speech has a good opening and a good closing. Begin by introducing yourself. Then follow your introduction with something interesting or funny, whatever suits your style.
A bride’s father would say how proud he is of his daughter and welcome his new son-inlaw and the groom’s parents to his family. He would then give some advice and well wishes to the couple. The speech would be finished off by proposing a toast to the happy couple.
Middle
The Groom
In the middle of the speech you could tell a nice or funny story about the couple. Keep it short and straight to the point though, excluding unnecessary explanations; this way you keep their attention at all times. Try to keep it between 3 to 4 minutes long.
The groom traditionally speaks next. He would thank the guests for their attendance and also thank the bride’s parents for giving him their daughter in marriage. He would then go on to compliment the bride and pay tribute to his own parents. Then acknowledgement would be made to everyone that had helped with the wedding arrangements, along with the best man.
Closing Most wedding speeches are closed by raising your
Finally he would propose a toast to the bridesmaids, complimenting them and recognizing their help and support throughout the wedding.
The Bride Although the bride is not expected to make a speech, she may choose to say a few words now if she wishes to do so.
The Best Man Officially, his duty is to reply on behalf of the bridesmaids. He would thank the groom for making him best man at his wedding and also say a nice compliment of appreciation to the bridesmaids. This would then lead into an informal speech about the bride and groom, adding in some nice or funny stories. If there are additional speeches or toasts to be made, they are done so at this time. When delivering a speech at a wedding it’s important to remember most of the guests will be your family or friends, and in some cases know you very well. They are not there to judge you, so try to relax and enjoy the special occasion. If you would like any help or advice on any aspect of organizing your wedding, then please do not hesitate to contact me on the email below and I would be more than happy to answer any questions or queries you may have. Heart, Mind & Spirit
Enjoy yourself (it’s later than you think)
Cheyne Towers MBAThH, GQHP is a fully qualified Hypnotherapist, Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Self Defence instructor based in London. He works with a variety of simple yet highly effective methods of natural therapy, in order to provide the right approach for the needs of each individual, whether it’s for self-development, physical health and fitness or self-protection. For more information please visit http://HeartMindTherapies.com OK, here I was thinking to myself that I was right on course, with plenty of time to spare as I’m in the middle of preparing a talk, which I am giving to a group of people in London… and suddenly I find out that the delivery date is not, as I had planned for, over a week away but in fact is in two days time. God damn it!
So, yes, I have royally messed up… or have I? Maybe this has happened for a very good reason, maybe its because under pressure of having to finish this paper that it might bring out something from within my heart that I really need to express courageously, honestly and humbly at this precise point
in time. And I see this whole thing as a metaphor for the fact that we tend to amble along believing that we have all the time in the world to do the things we want to do, or to visit the places we wish to see, or those people who we love, who may live a long way from us, and who we don’t get to see very often, or to maybe express in words (or otherwise) to those people who we love, just how much we really love them. Or maybe there are people whose behaviours we may have been tolerating for a considerable amount of time, who we might be absolutely fed up with and about whom
we may have thought to ourselves “I’m going to tell them exactly what I think, one day”… Well, life is way too short to keep putting off until tomorrow those things that we can act upon in the present, and being ‘present’ in the things we do could be described as the goal of The Work. And of course the work I am referring to is that work of transforming the more gross aspects of our personalities so that they may become something greater with a more positive purpose. So under the circumstances, now that I realise that I’ve made a mistake, and that I
don’t have as much time as I thought I did, how can I make best use of the next couple of days so that I complete this particular task with a good feeling rather than a stressful one? And, for me, the answer is very simple: I choose to enjoy every single moment I spend, expressing the things that I think and feel and also those things that I aspire towards, in the words that I put down on paper. So maybe, one can ask oneself, as time presses ever onwards; what things might I have been putting on the back burner, or putting off until tomorrow?… you know, those things which if
suddenly time were to run out, or circumstances get in the way and prevent that tomorrow from ever arriving, those things that you might regret not having done… I’m sure if we all honestly and openly ask ourselves the above question, there are probably a number of things that fall very readily into this category, and if so I wish to encourage you to take courage and be decisive in making the necessary moves to do what ever it is you may have been putting off, and whilst you do this… ENJOY YOURSELF (IT’S LATER THAN YOU THINK)!

When ‘however did we live without them ’computers first invaded my life, I spent 3 hours laboriously onefinger -typing an e- mail to my beloved daughter who at the time was back-packing in Australia. I missed her big time. Despite feeling quite intimidated by the new technological wizard which had turned our former sedate conservatory into a wire infested office , I decided to overcome my Luddite mindset, and proceeded to pour out my heart in several pages of ‘loving mum to lovely daughter stuff’. At the close of the e mail, feeling rather pleased with my first attempt, I held down the ‘X’, to end with a flurry of kisses. I was sighing with satisfaction and about to press the ‘send’ key when to my utter dismay I suddenly beheld a completely blank screen. I paged my computer whizz husband -as I was sure he would locate the lost letter. He tried, but declared ‘missing -missive- mission impossible’; the whole thing had “disappeared”. How can it just disappear?’ I wailed. “Where’s it gone’? I demanded to know, swallowing tears of sheer frustration. “I’m afraid it’s gone and lost forever ... floating somewhere in cyberspace” came the not overly sympathetic reply. (He still bears the marks where the mouse hit him!)And that is how I came to start the
‘let’s all go back to joinedup writing / licking - sticking stamps on envelopes/ trip to the post office/ Snail-Mail Club for Seniors’. But seriously, speaking of Post offices and getting lost – read on. World renowned evangelist Dr Billy Graham, about speak at a new venue stopped a young boy to ask the way to the Post office. Dr Graham then invited the boy to the big tent rally later that day. “I will be telling people the way to get to heaven tonight” he smiled. “Thanks, but I don’t think I’ll bother” came the reply...you don’t even know your way to the post office!” This preamble leads me to say a big “Thank you” to all the Canary News readers who emailed to ask what had happened to the end of the article in Kay’s Corner entitled–“I know where I’m going....I think”, in the last edition of TCN. Well the final paragraph (edition70) went AWOL, and although I am sorry that my ‘bottom’ was inadvertently ‘chopped off’, I am nevertheless delighted to discover that so many of you stalwarts actually do read to the end of the page! Given the nature of the story- as the article was all about getting lost and not reaching my destination - I guess the omission was really quite fitting. (One person actually wrote and asked if it was deliberate in order to add substance to the tale!) Those who are still holding their breath may now exhale .The ‘happily ever after’ bit is not in cyberspace or even found sulking on the cutting room floor. Suffice it to say that it is retrieved, and well worth a read, so here, as Dr Graham re-enters the narrative, is what was missing.
In January 2000, leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited Dr Billy Graham - now 93 years old - to a luncheon in his honour. He hesitated to accept because of ill health. ‘We just want to pay tribute to you,’ they said. Finally he agreed to attend. After lunch, Dr. Graham rose to speak. “I’m reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist recently honoured by Time Magazine as the ‘Man of the Century’, he said. “Einstein was once travelling on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching tickets. Einstein reached into all his pockets and briefcase but couldn’t find his ticket. The collector said, ‘Dr. Einstein, I know who you are, everyone knows who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket so don’t worry about it.’ Einstein nodded appreciatively. A little later the conductor turned back and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees searching under the seat for his ticket. He rushed back repeating, ‘Dr. Einstein, please don’t worry, you really don’t need a ticket - I know who you are’. Einstein looked up at him and said, ‘Young man, I too know who I am. What I don’t know is where I am going.’ “ Billy Graham concluded, “The suit I’m wearing today I bought brand new- especially for this luncheon and for one more occasion. It’s the suit in which I intend to be buried. But when you hear that I’m dead, please don’t remember this suit ... remember instead that I not only know who I am ... I also know where I am going.” And if you are still reading this article rejoice with me and with my editor... it must mean that I finally located the ‘SEND’ key on my machine!
Food for thought

are lots of similar websites but this is the best ‘free’ one so far that I’ve used. Firstly you will need to enter you current weight, height, ideal weight , timescale etc. Simple then is a calorie counter and tracks your daily food intake and any exercise you do. As it is very user friendly you can quickly and easily log what you eat throughout the day. They also have free mobile apps so you can add your meals as you go along. One of the best features is that it has an extensive food database so most of the nutritional information is
already on the site. You can also add your own meals and so effectively you can have your ‘favourites’ . Once you have a few days worth of information logged into the system it will do the maths for you. I.e. it wont just tell you your total number of calories eaten on a particular day but also show you the ratio of good and bad fats, proteins and carbohydrates against your ideal weight goal. This information can be seen in various formats ie as a graph or whichever way helps you to visualise how well you are
doing against your weight loss goal. It is a common fact that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume less calories. Self awareness of exactly
what you are eating on a daily basis really will make you stop and think. How many fizzy drinks do you have in a week? Your once a week takeaway is it actually more like 3? We all enjoy a glass of wine but do you ever have a booze free
night? If you’re serious about weight loss why not give it a go? It might not be for everyone but can for some have fantastic results - see this months client of the month if you don’t believe me!

OK so we all know that to lose weight, we must burn more calories than we take in or consume fewer calories overall. But this is often easier said than done. Keeping track of what we eat, when we eat etc can be time consuming, and lets be honest a bit of a chore. Added to which once you’ve gathered 1 week or 1 months worth of a written food diary, how can you actually quickly see where you are over (or under) consuming calories? This is where this online tool comes in very handy! There
ing 6lbs in 6 weeks with the help of myfitnesspal.com and a structured, realistic exercise program. Once Mike had got into the routine of entering his meals into the website it enabled him to get a very clear view of where he was going wrong and equally when he got it right!!! Fantastic effort and achievement. (Mike, Playa del Ingles)

Last month at El Corte Ingles in Las Palmas, Angel Lobo, the president of the Canarian Surf Federation, gave an informal yet informative chat on the subject of surf in the Canary Islands. Opening the event, there was a presentation of the latest video produced and released by the Federation which “stars” a wave and its commentary on how it was formed and travelled across the oceans, its life cycle and challenges. History Other subjects followed the story of surf and how it was started in ancient Polynesia. Captain Cook even wrote about seeing these
native folk riding on boards on waves. The story goes on to talk about surfing’s resurgence in more recent times from Hawaii and California and its appearance in the Canary Islands (first of all in Las Palmas) in the 1970s. Music The impact of surfing on music, from the Beach Boys right through to Jack Johnson... Surf Industry Surfing is big business - fact! From surf shops to surf schools, surfing provides employment and a boost to local economies. Whilst other countries have embraced this and nurtured it along, it is still in its infancy here in the Canary Isles. Angel hopes that looking at cases overseas will give us clues as how to unravel our surf industry and make best use of it. Sports resource The federation announced its plans to have surf spots categorised as areas dedicated to sport (in the

defences are prevalent as new beaches for tourists are being constantly planned. The Federation’s stark warning to the government is that once we have developed the coast, we will not be able to retrieve these waves, or the
natural reefs on which they break, ever again. If we want to be seen as an island that has great surf, and enjoy the benefits derived from this, we must study carefully the implications of building sea defences.
Artificial Reefs have been created in other parts of the world with varying degrees of success. The Federation talks about the potential boost to the economy from “Surf Tourism” by creating artificial reefs to surf on. Surf Meloneras CREDIT [CC2.0-by-nc-sa Flickr Gonzalo Déniz]

UDLP 1-2 Cartagena no mans land. In the 7th minute David Garcia gets a good chance from a long ball from Momo which he does´nt act upon, in the 14th it is Momo who receives the ball in space from Jonathan he beats Reina in the Cartagena goal with a delicate lobbed volley, 1-0 to Las Palmas. 24th Dangerous looking free kick for Cartagena on the edge of the box, comes to nothing, in the 27th Jonathan combines
well with Momo who crosses into the box, Portillo gets to it but pushes it over the bar. Minute34 another chance for Portillo this time his powerful header bounces off of the post. Cartagena have tried to play football but have not got into the game, now approaching half time they are playing less football and trying to intimidate UDLP´s young side. ➤ Second half, Portillo seems to want to prove a pointand
chases after everything. 10 minutes into the second half and Cartagena still seem to be without ideas but they do have an urgency about them that Las Palmas will have to keep under wraps. ➤ 60´ Good header by Paz of Cartagena just inches wide, then in the 64th Raimondo in a carbon copy of the Las Palmas goal equalizes for Cartagena. 74th minute Vitolo beats offside but puts the ball
over the bar. 86´ last chance for Jonathan to go out in a blaze of glory with a free kick just outside the box, he hits it too high and wide. .88th minute there is anarchy in the UDLP defence and Braulio is on hand to take advantage and steal an ugly game away from UDLP. ➤ RESULT UDLP 1- 2 Cartagena ➤ Next game is midweek away to runaway leaders Deportivo de Coruña. by IAN WILCOX
UD Las 3-1Palmas
➤ Deportivo are a first división millionaire club who were relegated by surprise last year but nobody has been surprised to see them sitting pretty at the top of the league awaiting promotion to thier rightful place. ➤ So it was on Wednesday 16th when UDLP made the long trip to Coruña in the top left hand corner of the Spanish peninsula, although Las Palmas went with the intention to play football and indeed played good attacking football the truth is that they were outclassed by a Depor ➤ Who have shown themselves to be a breed apart.

➤ Friday 11-52012, 9pm,attendance 6,245, Tonight promises to be emotional as it is Jonathan Vieras´ last game for Las Palmas following his 2.5 million euro transfer to Valencia. To mark the occasion Juan Manuel has named him as captain. ➤ Cartagena need the points to survive in the league and in reality Las Palmas have nothing to play for being in

UD Las Palmas 2 - 0 Hercules
➤ Saturday 19-5-2012 very small crowd of 4,032 die hards. Todays opponent is Hercules from Alicante, Hercules are currently in 5th place and so need to win to be sure of their place in the play off´s, Juan Manuel is rotating players for Las Palmas to help decide who will be staying at the end of the season, one of the players who´se future lies in the balance is second goalkeeper Raul who makes his 3rd start today. ➤ Las Palmas start with confidence passing well and looking for each other and in just the sixth minute the ball falls to Sergio Suarez on the right hand corner of the
box, he does´nt hesitate and slams the ball into the top left with a cracking half volley. Unstoppable 1-0. ➤ With so many playing that usually do not, there are some glaring lacks of understanding in the UDLP side but to a man they are all making a great team effort with even front man Portillo back helping the defence. Raul in goal needs to make his prescence felt to get his confidence up and the defence need to be on the ball because Hercules have players that can take advantage of even the smallest slip up, not least Aganzo. ➤ In the 21st minute Raul finally gets Las Palmas out of a
pinch with a good punch clear and it seems to have helped him find his feet. ➤ A slow game with Las Palmas playing a waiting game and resting on their early goal waiting for a chance to counter attack, it is a dangerous game to play but whilst the defence maintains itself disciplined all is well. The first half finishes without any more novelties and up to now we have seen none of the danger that Hercules position in the league promised.
Second half ➤ Minute 51 handball by Francis Suarez 10 yards outside the box, they blast the free
kick over the bar. In the 63rd minute Tiago Gomez of Hercules receives his second yellow and thus the red card. 72nd minute chance for Roque from 6 yards but he mishits it and it goes wide. Hercules seem to have been paying more attention to the commentaries of the Almeria game on the radio than on their own game because when it comes onto the scoreboard that Almeria have gon ahead in their game Hercules suddenly spring to life. ➤ In the 77th there is yet another chance for Hercules after they get an indirect free kick for dangerous play inside the penalty area, they hit the free kick into the wall and Las
Palmas breathe again. ➤ 87th minute good work from Vitolo finds Javi Guerrrero on his own and he calmly puts the ball in the net from 3 yards. 2-0. ➤ Injury time and Roque is again unlucky after a gfood pass from Portillo finds him in space. ➤ With just over a minute left of injury time Aganso of Hercules gets a red card direct which with one player injured after all the subs have been used and two red cards mean that Hercules finish the game with 8 players on the park. ➤ Las Palmas do not have anything more than pride to play for in these last 3 games of the season but
considering that the goal at the start of the season was to avoid relegation seeing themselves in 9th position in the league with 3 games to go seems pretty good going to me, even if the worst results have been against the worse opposition. ➤ Next 2 games are away fixtures to Elche in midweek and Barcelona b next week, neither Las Palmas nor any of their opponents for the rest of the season have anything to play for. ➤ I will be back to give summaries on these two games and a report on UDLP V Sabadell on the 3-6-2012 by IAN WILCOX

TARA TARA Animal Respect Association Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming Pets in Gran Canaria TARA.TheCanaryNews.com Facebook TARA or info@tara-animales.com TARA Animal Charity Shops, Flea Markets, Events, Pet Foster Homes & Adoptions (34) 928 062 891 Together We Can Make Gran Canaria A Paradise For Animals Too!
How Can I Caretake For A Dog or Puppy? There are at least two wonderful ways to introduce a dog or puppy into your life:
FOSTER Find a cutie pie that has been abandoned (check out the applicants below). Talk it over with the powers-that-be (hopefully that would be you). If you get the “all clear” sign, arrange with TARA to meet the little (medium or big) fella, fill out the foster agreement, then get close and cuddly. You will be supplying care and companionship
whilst providing this “sad tail” with hope for the future. After all, chances are your new best friend was abandoned or abused (abandonment is abuse - really) by a human and may not have much faith in our species. Remember, if the circumstances aren’t ideal (or more responsibility than you imagined), bring your temporary ward back to TARA. No guilt, no admonishments. Many foster homes are folks that come to Gran Canaria several months annually and wish to have the company of a canine during their stay while
providing so much than any kennel or pound is able (that would the humane side of the human being).
FOSTER TO ADOPT Should you foster a puppy or dog and discover (Surprise! Surprise!) that the addition to your life has been so positive (miraculous) that turning your ward over to another caretaker (Fosterer or Adopter) is simply unbearable, fear not. Fosterers can become Adopters! You only need to make a promise that you will forever and always treat your new best friend as a permanent
and valuable member of your family. No ifs, and, or buts! Or should you want to adopt: you have seen the dog of your dreams in The Canary News or on the TARA website or Facebook or TARA Outreach Emails - you only have to arrange for a meeting to start the FOSTER process. Then when you are absolutely certain, and your new best friend is absolutely certain that you are a perfect lifetime match (this requires not less than 30 days by agreement), then the fostering paperwork is replaced with adoption paperwork - and the beautiful deed is done.
MAY DAY! MAY DAY! With our wonderful snowbirds gone for the hot season, TARA finds the need for foster parent support greater than ever. These are the dogs that need (or will need) foster homes until permanent homes can be found. TARA believes that no matter how hard humans try to create a positive environment for

abandoned dogs in a pound or kennel, it still means living in a cage. Whenever possible, we strive to provide human companionship (love and nurturing) during the process of righting the wrongs of human behavior (abandonment and abuse): RESCUE, REUNITE (in cases of lost pets), REHABILITATE (restoring

I diagrammet
nedan illustreras hur bankens värdeminskning har accelererat under året. Banken utgörs av en sammanslagning av sju sparbanker. Banken är en av de mest betydande i Spanien, på grund av sitt stora innehav av lån till fastighetssektorn.
Svenska kronan tappade rejält i värde gentemot euron.

Giuseppe Verdis opera Rigoletto uruppfördes 1851 i Venedig.
