to those companies offering the best quality products and services. Established in Tenerife more than 10 years ago, as a tourist discount product, it originally comprised of a pocket sized magazine and a plastic membership card.

Amazing shows daily - Special Rates For Residents

The system worked very simply, just find a place you’d like visit in the magazine and show your card when you arrive to achieve the best discounts around. This not only benefited the consumers but also brought a steady stream of repeat customers to

the various businesses who signed up as GBG preferred supplier. Over the years they expanded to other parts of The Canary Islands and on to mainland Spain, and more recently into the Balearics. Of course being initially aimed at tour-

ists, residents rarely got the chance to benefit from the fantastic offers secured within the Green Banana, but that is all about to change. As a business, one of the most important elements has been their ability to forge long

They also created great working relationships with many of the biggest names in the time-share industry who again used The Green Banana Guide as a positive PR tool. The last several years have been tough for advertising in general with the ‘world crisis’ hitting business large and small. For many, the first thing to be cut is the advertising budget, which has meant that organisations like GBG Marketing and The Canary

News have had to innovate and adapt to a very different approach than was sufficient before. The simple fact is that at times like this, you cannot afford not to advertise.

On asking their client base what it is they needed most in troubled times, pretty much all of them stated COST EFFECTIVE or even FREE ADVERTISING that simply produces results. So GBG have set about developing over the last year or so a new system to take on board their requests. If you look, in general, at many of the big names in publishing, all have dipped

Missing Rep Balcony Fall Thomas Cook holiday rep, Lian Connis, is fighting for is life in hospital after falling from a balcony in Gran Canaria. The 31 year old from Southamption, is thought to have locked himself out of his apartment before attempting to climb in. He is believed to have been found unconscious outside his apartment building in the resort town of Puerto Rico on the south coast. The impact caused serious head injuries, a fractured pelvis, broken leg, and punctured lung. His parents Lyn and Chris were told he had been reported missing, a fact confirmed by the Gran Canaria Guardia Civil, who hold on file a missing persons report for one Mark Connis, apparently made on October 8th a couple of days prior to his being disocovered. Though there has been no suggestion in UK papers of anything unusual in the circumstances surrounding the incident, questions are being asked about what had occured in the days immediately preceeding Lian's fall. Sources on Tuesday the 9th, the day prior to Lian being discovered, reported that Thomas Cook were keeping a low profile in relation to the then missing rep, though again this remains unconfirmed. How long he was missing is unclear. His parents have now flown out to be by his bedside as he lies in an induced coma at the Hospital Insular. His sister, Lauren, 21, told The Sun: "Obviously we were relieved that he had been found and that he was alive, but at the same time we are worried sick about him because he's in intensive care. "We just want him to recover and to be safe. We are all praying that everything is going to be all right." She said that the last time he had spoken to the family, it was to tell them he had been awarded holiday rep of the month. "Lian absolutely loves his job. He was unemployed before he joined Thomas Cook and this job was the best thing that's ever happened to him." his sister added A spokesman for Thomas Cook UK and Ireland said: "Lian Connis is a valued member of our Gran Canaria resort team. "We're giving our full support to him, his family and colleagues while he is in hospital. We wish him the speediest of recoveries."

This Community! As with so many ideas like this it usually starts with just one person trying to make a difference. Whether out of necessity or solidarity people will often be united by a simple thought. For Marisa Herrera Ramos (top right) it was her belief that when people are supported through illness, and especially something as damaging to both body and self image as breast cancer, they recover faster and may be able to help others. By encouraging pre-screening and mammography visits, her organisation, ACCM, has led to a huge increase in Canary Islands' women being diagnosed and treated early, significantly cutting the amount of deaths and need for invasive surgeries. She is a real hero, fighting to help others on a daily basis. Kim Higgins (top left) was inspired to do something simply because she herself had encountered cancer and found that in one way or another it touched everybody, her success in bringing together her community in Puerto Rico last year and being integral to getting so many people to donate and become aware of the cause is second to none we have seen anywhere on this island. Without any prompting, just wanting to do more, this year she decided on a sponsored walk which in one day raised a significant amount of money and support. She too is a hero. When I arrived here, less than two years ago, I (Edward Timon, between Kim and Marissa) wanted to use the newspaper to do something positive for the community on this island, and so when I was approached by Miss Jackie Nails (representing GLAY and PRIDE) last year to support her campaign to raise awareness about ACCM, I and the paper threw ourselves into the task of promoting the hard work of people like these who give up their own time and come up with their own ways to try and make a difference within their community and for organisations like Marisa's who always need plenty of support. Jackie too is a hero having co-ordinated the bringing together of so many diverse groups culminating last year in the largest ever donation from the English speaking community to a Canarian cause. When we decided to do more than just support these people with publicity, inspired by the real life, every day heroes, I thought that I might stand alone. Wanting to show my solidarity with these ladies I wanted to put myself through a task that would require, in some small way, a similar kind of fortitude as is shown on a daily basis by people diagnosed with any serious illness such as breast cancer. I chose to walk to the top of the mountain, primarily as a test to see if in my middle age I could achieve something that I was pretty sure would take much of my strength and endurance to complete. Without really taking on board the gargantuan nature of what I was suggesting to do, I was failry confident that, at the end of the day, I would only need to rely on myself and my will to finish in order to get through the task. I was very, very wrong. To my surprise, and as the gravity of what I was about to do set in, several people from various and unexpected corners stepped forward to say "I'll do that with you". They all had their own reasons, but it was rather overwhelming to think that these everday people had decided to not let me go alone on what was to turn out to be one of the most precious and arduous achievements of my life so far. They became heroes. Having left the starting point in Puerto Rico I walked through the night with a group of mostly strangers, all of whom had come together to show their solidarity with anyone who has suffered from serious illness and to raise awareness about Breast Cancer in the run up to The International Breast Cancer Awareness Month of October. Jon and Connor of The Sportsman (Europa Centre), Gary (KISS Live), Gary (South Coast Printing and Design), Michael & Brett (Arguineguin) I salute you, you have my utmost respect for your achievement. I am proud to have walked The Long Walk with you. Fundraising continues at several participating venues throughout October, so give generously! We'll update you next edition...

supplied with water through the communal meter, that it is proposed they cut-off of supplies to the owners with debts such as this. Similarly, it is sometimes proposed that the debtors be deprived of the right to use the pool or to the TV signal, on the basis that these services should not be enjoyed by people who do not pay.

Illegal Measures in the collection of community fees In times of crisis, when there is a lack of resources for the payment of obligations, all debtors give preference to certain debts at the expense of others and it is, for instance, likely that the average person in hard times might pay, for example, the electricity bill before their communidad fees, aware that the payment of dues will not entail any immediate consequences, while the non-payment of the utility bill could quickly lead to the service being cut from their home. A decision like this is often made knowing that in order for the community to produce a demand, it must be agreed in a meeting; notification of the agreement sent to the community members; then a demand issued, with its subsequent processing and then later a judicial execution of the demand made. It is not uncommon in comunidads where the properties are

From a legal perspective the adoption of such coercive measures are actually contrary to law and presumed to constitute a criminal offence, giving the debtor, or their tenant, a perfect right to initiate criminal action against the president or administrators that carry out such actions. Communidads should never adopt measures of this type, as the run the obvious risk of ending up in a criminal court and even being convicted for carrying out such actions.

Foreigners with unemployment Can a foreigner who is receiving an allowance for unemployment be deported? No. No foreign resident can be deported if they are legally living in Spain, and commit no crime complying with the law of the land, this is true regardless of receiving welfare or unemployment benefits.

A traffic law infringement by a minor Can a traffic warden report a minor for having run a red light? As a minor, no. Parents are expected to take financial responsibility for traffic offences committed by their children, whether as drivers, passengers or pedestrians. This is true of any traffic offence committed by a minor even if as a pedestrian they cause a cyclist or motorist to have an accident or a car to crash into another, or into an obstacle, in order to avoid running them over.

Deadline for traffic accident claims Is there any deadline to claim for a traffic accident? The deadline for reporting it to your insurance company is seven days. If you are blamed for the accident and do not agree, you have a term of six months to make criminal report. If the criminal court rules against you there is then a civil route you can pursue, within a period of one year from the final criminal court decision.

Money

Focus on UK housing price drift then rise

Last month we took a look at “A week in the currency markets” and that was to highlight how sentiment, data and investors impact upon rates of exchange. To follow up September was not as quiet particularly as we saw movement in the currencies as follows £ to Euro High 1.2612 Low 1.2343 £ to $ High 1.6297 Low 1.5969 Euro to $ High 1.314 Low 1.2759 So there has been quite a bit of movement which impacts upon how much you get when transferring your hard earned money. September saw both central banks hold interest rates at the current low levels and no further decisions on “QE” however the ECB did say that the Outright Monetary Transaction (OMT) is now open for business, so who will be the first to apply. Spain and Italy have been tipped however it seems both these countries if given time will not need to go and ask for support. Spain however will receive funds to recapitalise its banking system. President Draghi has a couple of concerns for the eurozone and these were recently supported by the composite PMI for the eurozone which dropped from 46.3 to 46.1 in September covering both manufacturing and services sectors. Unfortunately this was the worst reading since Quarter 2 in 2009. With rising unemployment across the zone and cracks appearing in France doubt did return to the currency however of late sentiment has started to improve across the zone giving the euro a break. Keep an eye on Greece at the moment in a will it or wont it be given aextension to repay and if it is what impact will that have on the rest of the zone. The focus now appears to be on the UK as it saw a downward drift in house prices over the summer which shows prices being as much as 10.4% lower than at the start of 2008 (so it’s not just Spain!!!) and with Mr Osbourne having to find a further £16 billion of savings its getting tougher. Amazing how the UK can talk about £16 billion and not blink an eyelid yet when Spain talks about 16 biilion savings the world seems to think a disaster looms!!!! Being consistent with an economy contracting both manufacturing and services sectors contracted in September however in fairness the UK services sector was still above the 50% level that divides contraction from growth. All that said there are indicators of a sharp post summer housing price rise.

With attention in the USA on the presidential election thankfully for Mr Obama the number of unemployed fell below 8% for the first time in excess of 40 months so there is a belief that the job market is starting to heal itself, add this to the US manufacturing rising to a 4 month high of 51.5 alongside the services sector hitting a 6 month high then the US is in a rosy situation, or so you may think... It has a massive issue with its GDP which continues to rise and the deficit of 16.3 trillion dollars and at the moment nobody is suggesting how this can be reduced. The Federal reserve are doing their best to instill confidence in the economy and are keeping rates low for the medium term. At the moment the euro is doing quite well when you consider the attention and less than supportive headlines it has seen and is currently at the low end of the range we have seen. Choosing the right time to transfer your money is the trick so have a chat with Moneycorp our preferred currency partner by ringing 0034952587657, tell them The Canary News sent you and qualify for a better than bank rate on your transfers. by Barrie Mahoney

It began with a dream...

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher & school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer & author

Since the publication of my earlier books, ‘Letters from the Atlantic’ and ‘Living the Dream’, I have received a number of emails and letters from readers and would-be expats asking me to write some kind of ‘How to do it’ guide to living abroad. Suggestions made to me were along the lines of giving detailed instructions to would-be expats about taking those first tentative steps to a new life in another country. I decided to focus upon the expat - that confused being of mixed nationhood striving to find a place in a world of different cultures, traditions and often languages. As a Brit, living abroad, I will always see the world through the eyes of a Brit, as I know that my Canarian neighbours see their world through the eyes of a Canarian, the Germans through the eyes of a German and so on. This sense of nationhood is within our very being and is very hard to ignore, regardless of how long we may live in our adopted countries. The expression that “You can take the Brit out of Britain, but you will never take Britain out of the Brit” is a truism that I often quote, and remains true regardless of nationality. Life for an expat usually begins with a dream; a dream that grows stronger each time we dream it, and is supported by prods and pokes in our daily lives. I know from talking to many expats over the years that it starts with a feeling of restlessness that cannot be explained; it is a feeling that you should be somewhere else, and that you are missing something essential to your very being. Over time, the feeling grows until, rather like toothache, you just have to do something about it. This book is not just about Spain, or the Canary Islands. It is about a would-be expat wanting to escape to a life in the

sun, and being faced with issues that require an attitude of survival. I talk about ‘survival’ in the loosest sense, as I am not talking about life and death situations, but situations that require a different view of life to be applied and relate to most expats everywhere. The true expat feels a genuine sense of being in the right place and not just where he happens to be, based upon an accident of birth. Each day is an adventure, a new chapter to be read, a lifestyle to be tasted and savoured. The true expat also quickly realises that it is not about what he can get from his adopted country, but also what he can give back in return. ‘Expat Survival’ is based upon my weekly ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’, and are intended to be a light-hearted account and a reflection of my own life as an expat over a period of one year. Some may make readers laugh, whilst others may make readers cry in despair or even anger, yet others are meant to be a gentle prod in what I have found to be the right direction for me. Please do not think that I always get it right, I don’t, and feel the same sense of failure and frustration in common with most expats everywhere. This is not a ‘Do it yourself guide’ either, but a few thoughts on the best way to survive in a country that is your choice and not merely an accident of birth. ‘Expat Survival’ is now available online in paperback and Kindle editions from Amazon, and by ordering from Waterstones and all good bookshops. ISBN: 978 147 913 0481

Common mistakes in Spanish

by Theresa Coe language exchange group (LEG) co-ordinator

X marks a different spot

In English ‘x’ represents a kiss: un beso but in Spanish it’s shorthand for the word ‘for’: por, as it represents the multiplication sign. So in texts you need to write ‘besos’ (kisses) not ‘xxx’.

la gente es amable and el dinero es importante (money is important).

Language

LANGUAGE EXCHANGE AND SPANISH CONVERSATION CLUB Informal language exchange conversation groups meet regularly in Arucas, Las Canteras, Vegueta, Telde, Playa del Inglés and now San Agustin (Chinese and English for Spanish). There are also conversation groups for Spanish (San Fernando), German (Vecindario) and English (Las Palmas). All are free and great fun, even if you just help a local by chatting in English. To find out more, or request back copies of these lessons, email theresacoe@gmail.com or see www.facebook.com/LEGintercambio

Love or affection? Love (as a noun) is ‘el amor’ (to love: amar). However, if you want to write ‘love Jacky’ at the end of an email it´s ‘cariño, Jacky’ (literally: affection, Jacky). Similarly, the word for affectionate is cariñoso/cariñosa (remember: ‘o’ for a boy, ‘a’ for a girl). ‘Quiero’ (key-AIR-roh) normally means ‘I want’: quiero más dinero (I want more money) while ‘TE quiero’ means ‘I love you’ (though it´s not as passionate as ‘te amo’).

Don´t translate word-for-word! How long = how much time: cuánto tiempo. E.g: ¿Hace cuánto tiempo que vives aquí? (literally: it makes how much time that you live here?) How old = how many years: cuántos años. E.g: ¿Cuántos años tiene tu hijo/hija? (LIT: how many years has your son/daughter?). Note the pronunciation of hijo with the silent ‘h’: EE-hoh. How often = with what frequency: con qué frecuencia. E.g: ¿Con qué frecuencia vas al norte? (LIT: with what frequency you go to the north?) Question form = subject AFTER verb: ¿Qué come Pablo? NOT ¿Qué Pablo come? to ask: what does Pablo eat? And similarly: ¿cuándo llega Juan? NOT ¿cuándo Juan llega? (LIT: When arrives Juan?) Questions= preposition at start: ¿Con quién vas? (LIT: with who you go?), to ask: who are you going with? and ¿De dónde eres? (‘from where are you?’) instead of the English way: ‘where are you from?’

Always include ‘that’ Often optional in English, you must include this little link word in Spanish. E.g., ‘I think he´s coming’ would be ‘Creo QUE viene’ (LIT: I believe that he comes). Similarly, ‘I think so’ is creo que sí (I believe that yes), while ‘of course not’ is claro que no. Another example is ‘el trabajo QUE quiero está en Puerto Rico’ - the job (that) I want is in Puerto Rico.

Common spelling mistakes The ‘qu’ sound in English is made with ‘cu’ in Spanish, so it´s la cuenta (the bill) NOT la quenta. (note that household bills are FACTURAS). However, if they want a ‘k’ sound they´ll use ‘qu’: ¿Quién viene? (KEY-enn bee-YEN-eh; who´s coming?) The ‘h’ is ALWAYS silent, so if they want an ‘h’ sound they´ll use a ‘j’ (think of jamón – ham, or names like Juan). You also get an ‘h’ sound with ge/gi: la gente (pronounced ‘HEN-teh’). Finally, double letters are never used except to radically change the sound of a word, in just three cases. 1) cc, e.g. infección, 2) ll, e.g. llamar: to call, pronounced ya-MAR, with ‘ll’ giving us a ‘y’ sound, and 3) rr, e.g. perro (with the strongly rolled ‘r’ = dog; while pero with just one ‘r’ means ‘but’).

Put nothing between two verbs Nunca he ido (I´ve never been; lit - never I have been). Siempre estoy leyendo (I´m always reading; lit - always I am reading).

‘I am teacher’ We state occupations WITHOUT the article equivalent to a/an in Spanish: soy profesor(a), NOT soy una profesora. Ella es dependiente/camarera (lit: she is shop assistant/waitress). ¿Eres estudiante? (Are you a student?)

Don´t miss out ‘the’ They use it more than we do. For example, with likes/dislikes: Me gustan LOS perros: I like dogs; lit – me they please the dogs). Also in common expressions: la semana pasada (last week – lit: the week past) or el año próximo (next year: lit – the year next). In addition we use ‘the’ when talking about things in general, e.g. ‘people are nice’:

Where to Eat! Whereitsat@TheCanaryNews.com Ever wondered where is a good place to eat in Gran Canaria? What the food tastes like at the local hotspots, ice cream bars, and beach front cafes? Here you will find honest and independent reviews of the various places to eat around the island.... Fork Rating: by Clive Williams WOW...

Las Farolas is located in the main commercial centre in Puerto Rico, and is positioned on the top floor, providing an ideal view of the other bars and restaurants. This distinctive restaurant has an open fire pit, allowing you to watch as your prime cut of meat is grilled to your exact requirements. It is no secret that the commercial centre receives a huge amount of bad press, however, this restaurant is proving to be a jewel in the murky crown. The staff are helpful, informative and provide just enough interaction to not be annoying, well apart from one, however, we soon discovered no eye contact with her was the way forward. Starters were chosen, of garlic bread, chorizo Argentino and croquettes, simple yet effective with no complaints from anyone on our table. Mains are served with a choice of two side dishes which is brilliant for those fussy eaters, or if you like odd combinations on your plate. We ordered the giant mixed kebab; ribs, a pizza and ½ chicken. All arrived in a timely manner, with the correct side orders and sauces following. My only complaint was there was no dish to place my rib bones; however, this was easily rectified by emptying a side plate. The main dishes are large, and we were all struggling to finish, so by the time desserts were mentioned, there was only one taker. The dessert menu is basic, but effective with none of the frozen/ microwaved desserts that you see in so many places. Coffee was welcomed, and complimentary drinks offered but declined.

Will return and recommend

Could do better!

Never again!

The menu is varied and offers a vast array of different dishes from steaks, to fish dishes, to British sausage and mash. There is something for everyone, at a fantastic price which will encourage people to return. Also, they do not tolerate the annoying salesmen who wander through the centre attempting to sell their rubbish. They are swiftly asked to move on, and not disturb the diners, which is brilliant, and what a shame more establishments do not follow their lead. Overall: Food: Service: Atmosphere: Price:

Been anywhere lovely recently? Is there a restaurant or eatery in Gran Canaria that just seems to excel at creating the type of experience that you want to repeat again and again? Where can we find the best world foods, British Foods, German or Scandinavian fayre? Who, without doubt, has the most delicious and authentic Canarian menu? Where can we find to-die-for desserts? Who has the ambience just right for either an intimate dinner or a romantic occasion? We'd like to hear from you. Tell us all about the best places to eat on the island and we will try to send our man Clive along to put them to the test. He likes his food, so he won't mince his words And if he likes what you do, we'll tell the world.

Other: removing the “looky looky men

Puerto Rico 1968 lived. As an advocate of good business through unity and a proponent of progress and education he found himself on the wrong side of the new nationalist movement sweeping across Spain, and indeed much of Europe. The dictator Franco was not known for a love of free speech and as he rose to ever greater power through the last years of the 30s so many entrepreneurs and academics did whatever they could to escape with little more than their lives and their families. According to Juan Antonio, who works for the family business today, his grandfather fled to Morocco losing much of what he had managed to gain. He was however able to acquire a small factory, which allowed for a modest income. He and his wife were blessed with sons who were in time, despite the family reminiscences of growing up with an intimate knowledge of hunger and hard work, educated, returning to Gran Canaria some years later.

Five Roca brothers worked together on the initial development of Maspalomas in the early 60s, combining their talents and knowledge they formed a winning team consisting of Architect, Lawyer, Builder, Real Estate agent and Accountant. These would have been some of the first people to see the potential of mass tourism and they worked together to help build the infrastructure that would lead to the first tourist boom. In 1967 the owner of a barren valley on the south coast of the island came to the Inmobilaira Roca wanting to sell his

It was 1937 when Tomas Roca Bosch established Gran Canaria's first Real Estate Agency, Inmobilaria Roca. As a university educated Majorcan and now lawyer, he had risen quickly through the society of the island, becoming secretary to The Chamber of Commerce and then founding president of the first Association of Real Estate agents in The Canary Islands, at a time when very few, even in mainland Spain, realised the benefits of working together in the administration of business and property. He was, it seems, well before his time. Roca Bosch was in fact one of the first people in The Canaries to really talk about unity not only on an industrial level but on a national and European level. One of his favourite subjects in years to come would be the idea of a European Economic Community of which Spain and The Canaries should be a part. However, it seemed success for he and his wife, whom he had met here but who hailed originally from Galicia, was to be short

Editor@TheCanaryNews.com property for an asking price of around 65million Pesetas, perhaps afraid that he was being too ambitious, he is said to have halved the price not long afterwards. The Roca brothers took a great interest in this empty valley and used all their resources to try and gather together the asking price. There were no roads at that time, just dirt tracks, so they used to visit by boat bringing with them various experts to explore the possibilities. It was apparently when a meteorologist, who'd been drafted in for the day, told them that this valley had the very best weather and longest sunshine hours of anywhere on the island that their decision was made concrete. However they were only able to raise 25million pesetas and so were forced to look for outside investors, a model which would suit them very well in the decades to come.

They eventually raised a further 5million Pts and persuaded the vendor to meet them half way sealing the deal in the spring of 1968 to purchase the valley for some 30million Pts, the equivalent at the time of ÂŁ179,000 or, loosely speaking in todays money, just under â‚Ź3million. Over the next two decades the Roca family consolidated their investment developing the valley into one of the premier holiday destinations in Spain, building various apartment complexes and inviting significant investment primarily from the German and Swedish entrepreneurs who had discovered the island paradise and wished to put money in to the booming tourist resort in order to capitalise the boom that was sweeping the island creating a custom built town to rival anything offered a little way round the coast in Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.

Today Puerto Rico is a bustling town inhabitant by both holiday makers and residents who, as the tourist complexes out performed and fulfilled their investment potentials, bought their own little pieces of paradise to live in permanently or to take part in the thriving rental market which is still going strong today. Known by some as 'Little Britain' the inhabitants of Puerto Rico are made up primarily today of English, Irish and Scottish expats who now outnumber the tourists who visit the pristine beaches, bars and restaurants of this well known little town, many of whom have moved on to the larger and more luxurious custom built hotel developments preferred by the tour operators. And so the legacy of Tomas Roca has itself evolved into one of the most vibrant shopping and night spots on the island.

The Perfect Wedding Tips

Receiving Line Etiquette Thanking the guests who attend your wedding without missing anyone out

Your wedding day is full of many traditional obligations, which in some cases leave you very little opportunity to speak to all of your guests individually. With so little time, how do you ensure that you get the chance to thank each guest individually for attending your wedding without missing anyone out? This is where the receiving line comes in.

Should you have one? If you’re having a wedding of 50 guests or over, it’s consider proper etiquette to have a receiving line. It’s a great opportunity to show your heartfelt thanks and gratitude to each and every person attending, and it also

gives your guests the opportunity to give you both a hug and a kiss and personally congratulate you on your marriage. Furthermore, knowing that the traditional pleasantries have been covered, both you and your guests can sit back and relax and enjoy the evening. If you stick with the “thank them as you see them method”, you may spend your whole evening jumping from guest to guest and cutting in and out of conversations in the effort not to miss anyone out.

Where and when should you hold it? Traditionally, the receiving line is either held immediately after the ceremony, or before the guests enter the dining room to begin the wedding breakfast/reception. Choose a well ventilated and spacious area to ensure that the guests and the wedding party are comfortable and the line can flow fluidly. Depending on the number of people invited, the receiving line may take some time, so please take care that people are not left queuing in harsh weather conditions such as the heat, cold or bad weather and keep your conversations with each individual to a bare minimum.

Who takes part in it? Tradition has it that the bride’s parents as hosts would head the receiving line, followed by the bride and groom and then the groom's parents. However, it is becoming more popular for many bride and grooms to pay for the majority of their wedding themselves and choose to stand alone when greeting their guests. Some receiving lines may also include the entire bridal party (depending on room of course).

Be mindful that the more people in the receiving line, the slower the line may flow. For larger weddings you may opt for just the two of you.

Divorced or remarried parents Traditionally, if your parents are hosting the wedding and are divorced, they should not stand next to one another in the receiving line. It may give the guests the impression they are still together. You could choose to place you mother and father on either side of you both or place a member of the wedding party between them.

Should you include stepparents? This all depends on your family dynamics and whether you have a good relationship with your stepparents. Also, as hosts, are your parents willing to share that responsibility? If you do get the all clear from everyone concerned, then you could place your mother with her new husband on the one side of you and your father with his new wife on the other. You are not obliged to include any unmarried partners of your parents unless you wish to.

Alternatives to the receiving line Although there are many benefits to having a receiving line, if for whatever reason you choose not to have one at your wedding, there are other alternatives to ensure you get to meet and greet all your guests one by one. Visiting every table after the wedding meal is a great option. At one wedding, the bride and groom also used it as an opportunity to have a picture taken with the whole table. If you have less than 50 guests then immediately after the ceremony and/or during the cocktail hour is a great time to mix and mingle with each guest. Whatever option you choose the rules are the same, be sure to show your gratitude and thank each and every guest for joining you in celebrating your special occasion. The Unexpected Farmer

19

Welcome to our mad world! We’re farming by experiment and laughing along the way. Come for the eggs, stay for the life lessons! Who would have ever thought farming could be such hard work?!

The Unexpected Farmer

Hog Roast anyone?

UnexpectedFarmerGC.blogspot.com.es

Operation duck pond begins

When we moved in there was a resident duck here, which we quickly named Daphne (original I know!) and although she looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, we are convinced she thinks she is a chicken! Childhood memories of Beatrix Potter came flooding over me one day, and I simply knew I just had to have my own Jemima Puddleduck. Now, for those that know me well, you will know I am quite impulsive, and when I want something I want it yesterday....operation find me ducklings begun! We enquired in the usual "farmy" places, but alas the Chinese restaurants had beaten me to it, however, I received a tip off that there was a farmers market in Jinnemar! If you know GC well, you will know that visiting Jinnemar for anything can be dangerous, it just feels like one of those lock your

doors and pray you have tires when you return to your car type places... However, I was undeterred and casually dropped into a conversation with my husband one day that I wanted ducks, therefore, a duck pond needed to be dug, lined and filled NOW! I often use the claim that "we" will be doing this activity, however, in reality it means that he will be doing all the hard work, whilst I sit and give my expert opinion... So, the digging begins, and he has a look on his face expressing that this is going to be the smallest duck pond in history, where as I have grand ideas of full scale waterways! Needless to say the man putting in all the effort wins! The pond is filled, the little duck house in place, the straw plumped..... all I need now is my ducks.....

What is it about pigs that make people either imagine them with an apple in their mouth on the dining room table, or as the cute, talking pig in Babe.....for those animal lovers out there we are the first option. We had discussed getting a pig, to rear , fatten up and eat, now some people think that we are mad, and to those people I can't believe it has taken you this long to work that out. As with everything here in the mad house, there was much discussion, and very little planning involved. we asked around about piglets, and how you go about rearing them to ensure that they are healthy and of course fat! (hog roast!) Google again became my friend, and I read pages and pages about the best way to keep our new addition to ensure that they were happy and healthy. I soon gathered that keeping a pig really is not that difficult, feed it everything, give it plenty of water, shade, and a huge mud pit, and hey presto your pig will be as happy as a pig in s**t. We knew that purchasing a pig would be our largest expense to date, therefore, we wanted to ensure that it would be worth it, and needed to assess how much pork our new friend would provide. Now we all like pork, and there is plenty to do with it, however, we soon estimated that our fat little friend would produce over 65kg of meat...now that's a lot of bacon! Undeterred and ready with the cookbook in hand I went in search of a pig, again not a huge amount of thought went into how I was getting this pig home if I found one. I always reason where there is a will there is a way! Alas, I could find no pigs,

not even a whiff of bacon anywhere, oh well there would be no hog roast for us. We decided to call into the garden centre on the way home, to purchase some herbs, well part of the pork supper could still be grown...I would like to point out that our local garden centre is nothing like anything you would have ever seen. It is more like an overgrown back garden, where an old Spanish man waves his hands and tells you to find it yourself! Whilst wandering through the overgrown plants and trees, a small movement caught my eye, as there at the back past the forest, through the wardrobe (oh no that's a different story) there were pigs!! actually there were pigs, sheep, goats, horses and dogs. There was a miniature zoo, and I had my eye on the hog roast again! After much negotiation, and discussion on who was actually going to "do the deed" when my new addition needed to be butchered, we were in ownership of our very own piglet. As the Spanish guy carried her back to my car, it suddenly dawned on me "how the hell was I getting this pig home" before I could question this fact, the guy had flung her in the boot, shut it, and told me not to open until I was at home. I felt this was sound advice, and leapt in the car ready for an interesting journey home, on the way home, names were discussed and Peppa was chosen. I felt confident, happy and ready to fatten Christmas Dinner, until the moment one of my children turned to me and said " You have told Daddy that you have bought a pig, haven't you?" OH crap, I knew there was something I was supposed to do!....

SMILE.... HAPPINESS MAY BE ONLY “GRIN-DEEP”. Figures vary but did you know it takes around 44 muscles to frown and only 17 to smile! Therefore it should follow that people who frown a lot stand to get wrinkly and crinkly more quickly than smilers. Let’s face it...if you’ll pardon the pun, that’s one very good reason to wear a smile, to say nothing of not overworking all those facial muscles! Transforming smiles are a part of our body language which indicates to others that we are happy to see them. Smiles and laughter are beneficial to our health. As the old proverb has it “A merry heart does us good, like medicine.” Did you also know there is a World Smile Day? It is on the first Friday in October every year, and one where the internationally recognised Yellow Smiley Face,( symbol of good will and good cheer) comes into its own. The message is to encourage smiles, and therefore well-being, by our acts of kindness throughout the world. Why limit this admirable concept to just one day anyway? Why not start practising for October 2013 right now? Scientific studies claim that if we smile when we don’t feel like it, our mood will elevate despite ourselves. When we smile we feel happier, and facial expressions are contagious... smilers cause others to smile. Go on, try it! Of course this is not a cure-all for every situation (like overwhelming grief for example), but it can get many of us over a small dose of the blues, and help to lift a sense of sadness . Not much to smile about you say...recession, wars, poverty, injustice, difficult personal situations. Yes, of course all of us have our “down days”, and no one is meant to go around with a perpetual grin on their face. But don’t throw a “woe is me pity- party” and “enjoy” a stress-filled smile- free day either! Humour may not take your troubles away but it may just lift your spirit and put your smile back on .At the very least it will get your anti-stress endorphins kick-started, and will keep your new pot of anti-wrinkle cream sitting nicely unopened on the shelf. So here’s a “Kids-stuff” sample to start you off today. Schoolroom “Smileys” ____________________________________ TEACHER: Maria, go to the map and find North America . MARIA: Here it is. TEACHER: Correct. Now class, who discovered America? CLASS: Maria. ____________________________________ TEACHER: John, why are you doing your maths multiplication on the floor? JOHN: You told me to do it without using tables.

__________________________________________ TEACHER: Jane, name one important thing we have today that we didn’t have ten years ago. JANE: Me! _______________________________________ TEACHER: Glen, why do you always get so dirty? GLEN: Well, I’m a lot closer to the ground than you are. _______________________________________ TEACHER: George Washington not only chopped down his father’s cherry tree, but also admitted it. Now, Louise, do you know why his father didn’t punish him? LOUISE: Because George still had the axe in his hand? ______________________________________ TEACHER: Now, Simon, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating? SIMON: No sir, I don’t have to, my Mum is a good cook.. ______________________________ TEACHER: Mary, your composition on ‘My Dog’ is exactly the same as your brother’s. Did you copy his? Mary: No, sir. It’s the same dog. ___________________________________ TEACHER: Harold, what do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested? HAROLD: A teacher -------------------------------------------------------And the one that makes ME smile the most............. TEACHER: Jane, what are you drawing? JANE: A picture of God. TEACHER: But nobody knows what God looks like. JANE: They will when I’ve finished my picture. Here’s wishing you a wrinkle- free week....and don’t worry if National Smile Day has been and gone by the time you read this, there are still over 300 days to practice before the next one so ......... keep smiling! ways to keep fit for under €30 !

We live on an exceptional island, are blessed with year round sun and are thankful of the tourists. However how many of us fall into the trap of thinking that we too are on holiday meaning we get a little complacent on one too many bags of crisps, too many leche leche condensadas or twice a week Big mac & fries? Perhaps a Friday pint or 6 turns into a cheeky Thursday and a what the hell Wednesday excess?! Before you know it you're eating like a tourist on holiday everyday of the year.... Have you thought about what it is doing to you internally? Have you ever wandered how to get started and shift a little excess weight and ultimately get your health back in check? From our experience on the island we have generally found that people are very motivated, keen and determined to make a difference to their bodies. People can and will get up and exercise whether it be a walk, jog or swim and ultimately they find an exercise they like doing without it being too much like hard work. Brilliant news and well done. HOWEVER, we have also discovered that the bountiful excesses of food and booze available of the island can inhibit weight loss : fact. Please exercise but please understand that unless you alter your diet, your weight loss will be minimal. It is much

much easier to eat one less burger a week than try to run/ bike / swim the equivalent calories to burn it off.

How to start : Slowly, Simply and Effectively So the focus is weight loss. The exercise goal which you are either currently achieving or on the way too is under way (cardio 3, 45mins sessions per week). The diet goal is : 1/2 a kilo a week by trimming 500 calories each day. That might sound slow but we are trying to be realistic and make it achievable without you giving up. Starting points depend on you and where you are with your feelings about weight loss. Try writing a food diary of everything you eat and drink for 3 days and be honest. We won't kid you that keeping a food diary isn’t easy or convenient, however it will highlight where you could be making healthier choices, keep track of your calories and ultimately gauge the overall quality of your diet. You've by now identified a few areas to improve on which is great. Now plan a start date. Tell people what your plan is, put money spent on that vice in a saving pot, find a friend to do it with you, whatever helps you : PLAN. Remember the saying Failing to plan is planning to fail. One tip : don't try and cut back on everything all at once. Take one thing i.e. You

Number 10 Vs Why diet & exercise UD Las Palmas 1 UD Almeria 2 5.30 On a sunny Las Palmas with a public of cant be afternoon 9.160, some say that this is Lobera´s last chance to 'one or the other' Sergio impress after some pretty ter-

eat 2 large bags of crisps everyday, and cut back slowly. Your goal for the first week is to only have one large bag a day. That's over 500 calories in itself so already your diet goal for the day is done!! Then reduce the bag size and so on.

Tips / Simple Changes / Healthy Alternatives to Consider PIE : plan your meals for the week and shop after a meal. Don't shop when you're hungry as you'll end up buying the unhealthy stuff. Have healthy snacks at the ready. AVOID TEMPTATION : remove the chocolate, fizzy drinks, etc. from your cupboards. Take the beers out of the fridge! BE AWARE : of those rich, creamy, cheesy dressings on salads, pizzas and pasta sauces. We aren't saying you can't enjoy them but try to cut down the number of times you have them in a week. ISLAND SPECIFIC : limit these ones - they are disastrous to your heart and general health : churros, ( 1 stick = 200 calories so can you imagine a plate?!). Leche leche condensada. Gambas al ajillo .... You get the drift. It all might sound a bit heavy and regimented but you're reading this because you're interested and maybe want to start thinking about being a little healthier. Remember to take it slow. Take one thing and work on it. A final tip : for one meal a week forget all of the above,

and have a cheat meal. In the fitness industry everyone needs one cheat meal once a week (one meal only!). The theory behind it is to do with keeping up your moral and giving your metabolism a boost. GOOD LUCK!!! Would you like some help improving your diet? Do you struggle to lose weight, think you diet is spot on and are going round in circles? Do you lack in motivation or need healthy recipe ideas? Why not give us a call and we can help.

Food for thought........ Did you know that one little 10g bag of sugar equates to 40 calories? Take the average person who has 3 bags of sugar in one coffee and has 3 coffees a day. Over the course of 1 year you will have consumed 7.5kilos of sugar which equates to 30,000 calories. Scary or what?!

Client of the Month!

rible results, even though the last two games have resulted in draws, at home to Villarreal and away to Barcelona b, Las Palmas fans are still waiting for that first home win. Thirteenth minute and the first real chance for Las Palmas, a good header by Javi Guerrero from a great cross by Nauzet, two minutes later Thievy shoots, just wide and in the 25th minute Hernan gets a chance which he hits over the bar. Twenty eighth minute Javi Castellano breaks through, but his shot is way too soft, Momo on the half hour makes a chance after robbing the ball, his shot going wide. With half an hour gone all of the chances have been for Las Palmas, but Almeria are not a side to be over confident with and it is goals that win games, not chances. Four minutes after the half hour David Garcia has a pop from a long way out, his shot goes a little wide and Esteban in the Almeria goal had it covered all the way. Too many chances lacking results? They really need to make some of these opportunities count. Forty second minute, Thievy makes space and blasts from close in, but Esteban is in good form and is equal to everything thrown at him. A dangerous looking free kick for Almeria, shot wide and UD breath again and go back on the attack, just before half time a good Jeison Murrillo header goes over the bar. First chance of the second half is again Las Palmas; Thievy shoots wide after making space. 51st minute, Verza shoots high for Almeria

in their first real chance, Almeria look more dangerous in the second half than they did in the first. 57th minute and a defensive mistake by Corrales lets Almeria get the ball to Verza who makes no mistake and UD are left lamenting the wasted chances from the first half. Scrappy second half is much more to the benefit of Almeria than Las Palmas. 74th minute Chrisantus shoots wide and it is noticeable that UD are getting nervous. UD are still attacking but with just ten minutes to go the atmosphere remains expectant but today is a day where only a victory will do, UD manager Sergio will need a big change of luck. Eighty third minute red card for Las Palmas keeper Barbosa and a penalty for Almeria, Tyronne goes in goal on his debut for UDLP, he can do nothing to stop Charles making it 0-2 for Almeria. Eighty sixth minute and maybe there could still be a draw as Thievy smashes the ball home from the edge of the box 1-2. Two minutes to go, corner for Las Palmas, knocked away, another corner Chrisantus puts it wide, last chance, last minute UD corner everyone goes up for it, the ball falls to Momo who shoots into the body of a defender. Full time. UDLP 1- Almeria 2, far too many wasted chances, could prove expensive for Sergio.
