Five things San Juan should know this week River Street Marketplace Gets City Approval THE LATEST: After nearly four years of planning, community debate, dialogue and refinement, San Juan Capistrano developer Dan Almquist has won city approval for a 59,000-square-foot, agrarian-themed commercial village to be known as River Street Marketplace.

“Many cities would love to have this project in their town,” local resident Michael Forster said as the city council voted, 4-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to approve a change in land-use designation, a development agreement and several other entitlements.

The pedestrian-oriented marketplace, which will include outdoor seating and dining, will consist of seven rural-themed buildings around a courtyard. River Street’s shops, restaurants, artisan enterprises and eclectic businesses will occupy 5.86 acres of open land that borders San Juan’s historic Los Rios District, said to be the oldest residential street in California.

At the council meeting, 11 speakers lavished praise on River Street, predicting it will fit into Los Rios’ ambience, create jobs and economic benefits for San Juan and uphold the town’s heritage.

An environmental study suggested that impacts can be managed. Speakers applauded the way Almquist, who lives in San Juan, met with neighbors, finding ways to work out differences with project opponents through refinements.

“It sure worked out nice,” said Michael Palmer, who lives on Los Rios Street next to the project. “I’ve had a few sit-downs with him, and I understand that he is genuine. He does have a good project there. It’s not going to be perfect—nothing is going to be perfect—but with what we have there, I think it’s going to be a righteous thing.”

No one spoke to the council in opposition.

“It is really a remarkable project,” Mayor Brian Maryott said. “I remember watching it unfold. My first comment, when we were voting to go into a study, was, ‘Boy this is a big project.’ I didn’t support it at first. It’s been interesting to watch the modifications, the discussion.

can come in life, with all kinds of projects and issues, if one party just continues to put themselves in another party’s shoes.

It wasn’t that long ago we had folks with (protest) signs here.”

Almquist commended Jeff Vasquez, the most outspoken critic of River Street Marketplace, and Palmer, for working with him on changes.

“This is a very personal project to me,” Almquist said.

In May, the Planning Commission had supported a 64,900-square-foot project design, forwarding it to the city council for consideration. Vasquez, through his attorney, raised concerns, city officials said.

In September, Almquist submitted a revised plan with less square footage, less coverage of the site, more landscaping and a smaller parking lot.

Due to the reductions in square footage, the revised project required only 239 parking spaces. The May proposal called for 291. The new plan depicts 242 parking lot spaces, accessed from Paseo Adelanto, which could itself have up to 20 angled parking spaces fronting the marketplace.

Councilmembers considered, but did not accept, a request from the Planning Commission to ban outdoor amplified music and smoking at River Street Marketplace.

Almquist said he doesn’t plan to offer amplified music outdoors and would be fine with a smoking ban.

Councilmember Sergio Farias said that a smoking ban might lead smokers— whether visitors or businesses’ employees on break—to go out onto River Street to smoke.

“I think we would actually make it worse,” Farias said.

gested the city avoid an outright ban of amplified music. Current rules will require River Street to request a conditional use permit anytime outdoor amplified music is sought, and the city council, case by case, could say yes or no and impose conditions.

“That’s a pretty high hurdle,” Bourne said.

City Officials Discuss Emergency Preparedness THE LATEST: With earthquakes, wildfires and other emergency events in the headlines, the City of San Juan Capistrano is prepared.

The Capistrano Dispatch recently met with city officials to learn about how they’re prepared and hear what tips they recommend for the community. The city follows an emergency management system standard throughout California in which they train annually. In an emergency situation, cities report to the county, the county reports to the region, and the region then reports to the state. This chain of command is to avoid disorganization.

Assistant City Manager Charlie View said they do tabletop exercises in which they look at different kinds of emergencies and try to work through what happens in each scenario.

“You test the computers,” View said.

“You test the TV. You test the radios.”

lingo—at the city hall complex that can be activated if necessary. Besides mentioning the city is aware there are areas considered high fire-hazard severity zones, View was hesitant to speak on the likelihood of an emergency situation happening in San Juan Capistrano.

While wildfires and earthquakes are frequently mentioned when discussing emergencies, View said emergency management involves being prepared for all hazards.

Emergency Services Manager Lynn Mata mentioned numerous preparedness tips for residents, including having a go kit with important papers, making sure pets are secure and having medication on hand.

“You have to have a plan,” Mata said.

“Where are you going to take your family?”

Mata further recommended having a meeting place if phone lines go down and utilizing out-of-state contacts if you can.

“Listen to your car radio if the phone is out,” Mata said.

Preparedness information is available on the City of San Juan Capistrano website, including an evacuation route, how to register for the AlertOC notification system and how to sign up as a volunteer for various response teams.

There are volunteers who work with the Community Emergency Response Team, and there is also a Large Animal Response Team that can help rescue and evacuate horses. The city website also has information about the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services.—Collin Breaux

Coastal Commission Approves SoCal Edison’s Permit to Dismantle SONGS Facilities THE LATEST: The California Coastal Commission (CCC) approved a development permit last week that will allow Southern California Edison (SCE) to begin dismantling the twin containment domes at the San Onofre power plant once the nuclear waste has been removed and downloaded into its interim storage facility.

Much to the dismay of many in the audience who attended the CCC’s Oct. 17 meeting in Chula Vista, commissioners were unanimous in their decision to approve the coastal development permit, which came with a laundry list of conditions SCE must comply with in order to “protect the quality of coastal waters, ensure biological productivity, and protect against the release of hazardous materials.”

EYE ON SJC (Cont. from page 3) Generating Station (SONGS), the company states that the eight- to 10-year process of removing the above-grade structures, including Units 2 and 3, could begin by next year.

The “dismantlement of the plant structures will remove a significant amount of hazardous material from the site,” SCE explained in the release. “In addition, removing most of the above-grade structures will eliminate prominent visual features associated with the facility and start the process to return the property to landowners as soon as practical.”

The Coastal Commission’s report on the development permit notes that SCE’s plans to remove the infrastructure would leave “significant amounts of foundation, footings, and other existing material in place,” potentially leaving the coastal environment and community vulnerable to safety risk.

“Over time, coastal processes, exacerbated by sea level rise, could cause portions of remaining structures to become exposed, which would cause potential risk to public safety and marine life, as well as impacts to visual resources and public access,” the CCC report stated.

To address those concerns, Coastal Commission staff included several conditions in the resolution that requires Edison to provide annual progress reports of the project to the commission every June 15. Other conditions also mandate the development and submission of a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan, as well as a Spill Contingency Plan, to the commission for approval prior to the start of the project.

A late addition to the list of conditions included in the resolution would expedite a provision in the separate CCC-approved development permit from 2015 that authorized Edison to build its Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) for the dry storage of radioactive waste.

The 2015 permit required Edison to submit an Inspection and Maintenance Program by October 2020. That program, which is meant to ensure that the casks Edison uses to store spent nuclear material “will remain in a physical condition sufficient to allow both on-site transfer and off-site transport,” must now be submitted to the Commission by March of next year.

Edison has been working to decommission the plant, which currently sits on land owned by the U.S. Navy, since 2013.

Per the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Edison has 60 years to complete the decommissioning.

The federal government’s plan to establish Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent storage site has been stuck in legislative gridlock since 2010, when the Obama administration cut funding for the project.

“We all really recognize that the main failure in all of this is the federal government guaranteed a permanent off-site

location for spent fuel, and the federal government has yet to deliver on that commitment,” Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis said at the CCC meeting. “This isn’t just an issue for this site but other sites across California and the country.”

Tensions began to flare toward the end of the nearly four-hour discussion on the resolution, prompting the commissioners to take a brief recess before voting, as members of the public were interrupting.

However, when the commissioners came back for the vote, they approved the resolution in a unanimous decision, avoiding a roll-call vote, which was met with scorn from audience members.

Target Still Moving into Former Ralphs Location THE LATEST: Target, a general merchandise retailer with stores in all 50 states, is still planning to move into the former Ralphs grocery store space, according to property landlord Andrew Stroscher.

The chain store will be moving into the spot on Del Obispo Street sometime in 2020 with a small-format store. Stroscher said, as a rough estimate, Target could come in sometime mid-to-late 2020.

“It’s not going to be in the springtime,” Stroscher said.

In a letter to the city, Target officials said their small-format store concept provides guests with a “convenient in-store experience for that quick trip.”

“Target’s interest in locating a store within San Juan Capistrano is rooted in the growing desire of residents of local neighborhoods to not have to leave their community to get their basic daily goods and services, as well as many residents seeking to take advantage of online shopping,” the letter said. “Regardless of the size of the store, Target integrates sustainable practices, from the products that we offer to the way we operate our store.”

Smaller Target stores like the incoming one tend to tailor goods to people in their area, Stroscher said. Proposed features for the Del Obispo Street store include signage and accessibility improvements within the parking lot, according to a development application with the city.

“The best thing about Target is it will cater to all the different demographics in San Juan Capistrano,” Stroscher said.

“Once it’s in, I think the townspeople will be really happy.”

The letter from Target also said the company would reinvest in the building by updating the mechanical and plumbing systems and using LED lighting systems.

City Broadens Feasibility Study for Ecology Center’s Expansion Proposals THE LATEST: The Ecology Center is expanding its vision for creating a “transformative community farm” on city-owned agricultural land.

The city council voted, 5-0, on Oct. 15 to study the feasibility and possible impacts of allowing various activities that Evan Marks, The Ecology Center’s founder and director, wants to introduce on the 28-acre Kinoshita Farm.

Operating for 10 years on a one-acre portion of the farm, The Ecology Center operates an education center that teaches local residents, visitors and school groups how to grow food, make their own goods and live in a more environmentally friendly manner.

A year ago, the city granted stewardship of the other 27 acres of farmland to The Ecology Center, while launching a feasibility study for expanded activities.

That study, still underway, is looking at whether to allow such features as retail dining facilities, a museum, artist studios, community gardens, public trails and overnight stays.

This week, the council agreed to widen the study to also consider such possibilities as a wedding garden, live entertainment, a bicycle repair kiosk, a private farming school, a pocket park, a program to raise sheep, goats, pigs and cows—even a potential skate park.

It could take nine to 12 months to conclude the study conducted by the city at the expense of The Ecology Center.

Any proposals that come out of the study will be reviewed by the city’s Design Review Committee, Cultural Heritage Commission and Planning Commission

before being presented to the city council.

The city acquired the farm, located on the corner of Camino del Avion and Alipaz Street, after voters had approved a 1990 bond election to protect San Juan’s remaining farmlands from urban development.

The 56-acre Kinoshita Farm was among parcels the city acquired to preserve as open space. The city turned about half of the acreage into a sports park. South Coast Farms grew crops on the other half, but ultimately shut down, unable to handle high water costs. The city leased the farmland to the nonprofit Ecology Center.

The city will need to revise a councilapproved Kinoshita Farm Specific Plan in order to allow any or all of the uses The Ecology Center is proposing. That would only be a first step.

“The study itself will not lead directly to the implementation of any specific project,” David Contreras, principal city planner, wrote in a report to the council.

Marks said he is excited about the possibilities.

“I think it’s the most unique asset in Orange County,” Marks said of The Ecology Center.

Two local residents voiced words of caution. Howard Newman said overnight stays and events with music are a concern to neighborhoods on three sides of the property. Clint Worthington said the $21 million bond election was to preserve open space—not the scope of activities The Ecology Center has introduced, some of them unpermitted.

“This is not Woodstock,” he said.

Councilmembers praised programs The Ecology Center has brought to the community and to the region, while directing city staff to address concerns raised by speakers. Staff was asked to ensure compliance with city codes and, upon hearing suggestions from Capistrano Beach resident Richard Gardner, investigate ways to provide cheaper irrigation water.

“I do think that it’s a special piece of property,” Councilmember Troy Bourne said. “It represents a unique opportunity for the city. I think it really could be something spectacular.”—FS thecapistranodispatch.com

Gala Raised $285K for Mission San Juan Capistrano The Romance of the Mission benefit gala drew 475 guests to Mission San Juan Capistrano on September 20, according to a news release. Net proceeds of an estimated $285,000 will support the Mission Preservation Foundation and ensure the historic and religious significance of the mission.

“Tonight provides us with a chance to come together, to celebrate the positive impact you have made possible,” Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams said while welcoming guests. “A chance to say thank you to a vibrant collection of uplifting people, making a difference.”

San Juan Couple’s Preservation Efforts Recognized with Naming of Hiking Trail A public hiking trail along the east side of San Juan Capistrano is being named for longtime residents Ilse and Roy Byrnes.

Ilse Byrnes is a pioneer of the city’s trail system and the prime mover to achieve national recognition for San Juan Capistrano’s historic landmarks. Her late husband, Dr. Roy Byrnes, is a former city mayor who served during two distinct periods of his life.

The city council unanimously approved the naming of Prima Deshecha Trail in honor of Ilse and Roy Byrnes.

“Very few people, very few couples, have done so much for one city,” Mayor Brian Maryott said as he asked Ilse Byrnes to stand and be recognized at the council’s Oct. 15 meeting.

“We are grateful,” the mayor said.

“Thank you, Ilse. We are honored.”

The audience applauded Byrnes’ contributions to the city.

The trail selected runs about a mile and a half “from its convergence with the Las Ramblas Trail to the split into the Whispering Hills and Juliana Farms Trails,” a city staff report said. “This trail tracks adjacent to the Prima Deshecha Landfill on the east side of town.”

San Juan Hills High School Senior Prints 3-D Arm Prosthetics for Third-World Children San Juan Hills High School senior Ashlynn Matthews opens an Enable the Future 3-D printing chapter at her high school as a means of creating arm prosthetics for third-world children with missing limbs. A volunteer herself with the network, Matthews was given her first prosthetic limb case in 2018.

Matthews was first inspired to partake in Enable the Future after a humanitarian visit to Fiji. It was there that she was able to witness first-hand the number of children in need of prosthetic limbs.

Once back home, Matthews joined Enable the Future; the organization describes itself as “A Global Network of Passionate Volunteers Using 3D Printing to Give the World a Helping Hand” on their website. The network touts connecting volunteers in the 3-D printing industry with an individual in need of prosthetic body parts.

Since her start at Enable the Future, Matthews has become a certified volunteer within the network and received her first official case in 2018. The network paired Matthews with 2-year-old Brazilian-

Matthews has also extended the network to her high school, opening a chapter of the organization at San Juan Hills. Prior to its establishment, Matthews opened a grant proposal as a means of funding 30 prosthetics. Los Patrones Parkway Opens Second Phase

T

he Ranch announced this week that the second phase of construction for Los Patrones Parkway in Rancho Mission Viejo has wrapped up, opening the 4.5-mile road completely from Oso Parkway to Cow Camp Road.

“This is further evidence of The Ranch’s long-standing commitment to enhancing South County mobility in advance of development, while providing mobility benefits to neighboring communities,” Mike Balsamo, senior vice president of governmental relations for The Ranch, said in a press release.

Construction of the project saw months of delays because of the heavy rainfall Southern California received this past winter. The southern portion of Los Patrones was initially estimated to be open by late 2018.

“The completion of Los Patrones Parkway has been five years in the making, but it was worth the wait,” Orange County Board Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett said in the release, adding: “We’re proud of how it all came together for the benefit of the

Fifth District and the greater region.”

Rancho Mission Viejo is footing the bill for the project, which is part of The Ranch’s commitment laid in its transportation program for the planned community that the County of Orange approved back in 2014.

The first phase of Los Patrones that connected the end of the 241 Toll Road to Chiquita Canyon Drive opened to the public in September 2018. The Ranch notes that the initial phase included a multipurpose trail for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Ranch also boasts that both phases of the arterial highway were “designed with the environment in mind,” as two wildlife crossings were constructed, a wildlife exclusion fence was put up and more than 80 acres of slopes with native plants were revegetated.

“Because the roadway goes through the Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo, special attention was paid to mitigating impacts from runoff and being a good steward of the natural resources,” Balsamo said in the release. “We’ve incorporated water quality treatment systems in compliance with the latest state requirements.”

ana Point Harbor is a worldrenowned destination that Orange County residents treasure greatly.

We have so much to be proud of at our Harbor, from the great restaurants that offer an array of culinary choices, to now being internationally recognized as the Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World.

We also know how much time and dedication went into advancing plans for its revitalization. When I was first elected to the Dana Point City Council in 2006, one of my primary goals was to continue the effort to revitalize this aging treasure so that we, and future generations, could continue to enjoy this South County jewel. We are now on the cusp of a new legacy at Dana Point Harbor, and we will memorialize this with the dedication of a new time capsule.

was held to open the Dana Point Harbor time capsule that had been placed in the Harbor during its original construction and creation in 1966. Contained in that basic steel cylinder were more than 65 interesting, historical and important items that represented Dana Point and our surrounding communities at the Harbor’s conception. Logging On HOW PARENTS CAN BEST MONITOR THEIR KIDS’ SCREEN TIME

Now that children are being exposed to smartphones and tablets at a younger age, it’s important to keep in mind how much time young kids spend staring at a screen.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), preschool-age kids should not have more than one hour of screen time in a day. Although some pediatricians argue that even an hour can negatively impact children younger than age 5 with developmental issues.

For children older than 5, AAP says it is crucial to be consistent about limits. There’s no set recommendation other than ensuring screen time does not replace physical activity, sleep or “other behaviors essential to health,” according to a 2016 study.

The AAP offers a set of health and safety tips on media consumption, which includes

treating media as you would any other environment in your child’s life.

“Set limits; kids need and expect them,” the AAP says. “Know your children’s friends, both online and off. Know what platforms, software, apps your children are using, what sites they are visiting on the web, and what they are doing online.”

The organization also encourages “unplugged playtime” to give children a break. Screen time should not always be alone time, either. Co-view, co-play and co-engage with your children while they use screens.

“Very young children learn best through two-way communication. Engaging in backand-forth “talk time” is critical for language development,” AAP says. “Teach and model kindness and good manners online. Because children are great mimics, limit your own media use.”

After the School Bell HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN SOUTH COUNTY

Fortunately, there are a multitude of options for children in the tri-city area, no matter their interests.

Sherry Murphy is the recreation manager for the Dana Point Community Center, which offers programs for youth including dance classes, martial arts, youth sports and music lessons—as well as CPR and AED training for babysitters.

“These kinds of opportunities really serve to help kids figure out who they are,” Murphy said. “These programs teach kids about themselves . . . what they like, what they don’t like.

It helps them figure out their identity.”

For Fall 2019, Dana Point Community Center offers a class that teaches the seven basic elements of art. The course provides building blocks in learning how to use paint, oil, pastel, watercolor and more. Dance classes include ballet, jazz, hip hop and acro dance, which is a technique of dance with acrobatic elements. “(This form is) a seamless blend of athletic tricks and creative choreography designed to improve flexibility and strength,” the course description says.

The various levels of karate classes touch on traditional Japanese styles of martial arts, with an emphasis on self-discipline, manners and respect for others.

“Our babysitter training class is a great opportunity for older kids wanting to get CPR-certified,” Murphy said. “The course offers instruction on babysitting guidelines and training for CPR, AED (automated external defibrillator) and First Aid.” Those who register for the class must be at least 11 years old. There is also a separate

course that offers CPR and AED training for adults, children and infants experiencing emergencies.

The “Amazing Athletes” program teaches fundamentals of 10 different sports, focusing on development, agility and speed. Students learn about their muscles, good eating habits, hand/eye coordination, muscle tone and more. There are courses offered to 2 ½-4-yearolds and for 4-6-year-olds.

In San Clemente, Goal Zone focuses on skill development and healthy living. Each week, students learn new skills through drill training and practice games. On the sixth week, participants partake in a tournament between schools. The program includes a light snack and T-shirt. Las Palmas, Marblehead, Concordia and Lobo elementary schools participate in the Goal Zone program.

STEM3 Academy Provides Specialized Learning in OC

The Help Group, the largest nonprofit in the nited States serving children and young adults with special needs, has opened a third campus for its STEM Academy in Irvine.

According to its mission statement, STEM Academy (pronounced STEM Cubed Academy) “provides a robust Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-based curriculum to students with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and other social and learning differences.”

According to the academy, there has been a 28 increase in the number of students with neuro-developmental differences enrolled in undergraduate STEM fields, and the STEM Academy is doing its part to add to those numbers and help with the increased need for STEM workers across the country.

The STEM Academy has four areas of focus content, method, pathway to careers and 21st century skills. Content is the specialized curriculum; the method is student-centered and pro ect-based learning with real-world applications; the pathway to careers exposes students to professional environments and partnerships to

HOW TO SNEAK HEALTHY FOODS INTO YO R CHILD S DIET

BY GINA COUSINEAU Today, the odds of feeding our families healthily are stacked against us, due to the influx of highly processed convenience foods that are actually chemically formulated to prevent you from eating “ ust one Lay s potato chip.” That being said, how in the world do parents in ect nutritious food in their children at home, let alone on the go?

Step one starts with providing wholesome food choices for the family. Even if you are forced to get “takeout,” try to stick with foods as close to their natural package as possible. One rarely sees pinto beans in their pods unless we are growing them ourselves, but rather, we buy them dried or canned (low sodium, please). In both cases, they have been minimally processed and one cup provides more than half of our recommended daily fiber, 15 grams of protein, and a fat dose of folate. On the other hand, your favorite fish-shaped cracker could not be further from what nature intended. For the same calories, we see half the protein, zero fiber, and a whopping 480 mg of sodium.

For seriously picky eaters, soups and smoothies can be lifesavers.

Take my Chicken Pot Pie Soup recipe. While the instructions suggest pureeing some of the soup to make it thick and creamy, go ahead and puree the entire batch, and even crunch some of those “crackers” on top for fun. The smell of the soup will entice everyone into the kitchen, and when the devices get put down, a beautiful family meal can be had by all. Smoothies are loved by most, so keep an assortment of fruit in the freezer and blend with milk or soymilk, nut butter, toss in some spinach or kale, a tablespoon of chia or flax seed, even a s uirt of chocolate syrup for some fun, and the entire family can en oy a uick and easy nutrient-dense meal or snack.

1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh thyme) 2 cups unsweetened nut milk (or sub any milk for added protein and creaminess) cups chicken broth 1 cup frozen green peas 4 Servings 85 calories each

DIRECTIONS: In a large Dutch oven or pot, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil. Once oil is hot, add in diced chicken breast and generously season with salt and pepper. Cook chicken for 4-6 minutes or until thoroughly cooked and no longer pink. Remove chicken from pot and transfer to a large bowl; set aside for later.

In the same pot, add in 1 2 tablespoon olive oil, onion, carrots, potatoes, cauliflower and thyme. Saut for a few minutes until onion begins to soften, then add in almond milk, and chicken broth. Allow mixture to simmer uncovered for 10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender.

Across all C SD s elementary schools, kindergarteners and their parents were able to en oy full-day sessions in classrooms and on campus as the district decided to implement the full-day program throughout the district following a successful 2018-2019 school year in which a dozen schools had tried it out first.

According to C SD, kindergarten enrollment increased by 8 students this year, as compared to last.

This year also saw the rollout of R.H. Dana Elementary School s Spanish Dual Immersion program in which students were taught in English 50 percent of the day and in Spanish during the other half.

To introduce the program this year, R.H. Dana s kindergarten class was the first to experience the 50 50-style education at the school, and they will carry it through each subse uent grade level until the 5th grade, when those students transition into a middle school bilingual program.

The school also saw a significant surge in kindergarten enrollment this year, as nearly 56 students were welcomed in August, up from the 29 students who were enrolled last school year, according to C SD. The district also boasted that R.H. Dana has seen enrollment numbers go up in its 1-5 grade levels as well, in large part due to “the positive changes at the school and enrichment Spanish program offered at those grade levels.”

And, with an increased interest in improving the mental health and stability of all citizens, but especially students, C SD has partnered with Hoag Hospital to conduct a series of speaking events called “Helping Teens and Families Navigate Mental Health and Wellness.”

During such events, a panel of sub ect matter experts on teen mental health from After School Programs for Interventions and Resiliency Education (ASPIRE) at Hoag will discuss a variety of topics that relate to today s youth while also answering audience uestions.

ASPIRE at Hoag is designed to help kids and teens who are experiencing emotional and neurobehavioral problems, including anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and other mental-health related symptoms.

The second event in the series, which is free to attend, is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Aliso Niguel High School from 6-8 p.m. The topic will be centered on identifying substance abuse disorders and the danger of vaping.

Extending Help & Providing Hope Q&A WITH SUSAN PARMALEE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE WELLNESS & PREVENTION CENTER

he Wellness & Prevention Center was founded in 2014 in response to increasing substance use and suicide rates among area teens. With the mission of helping teens lead healthy lives, the center started by providing mental health interventions and prevention education in San Clemente High School. The Wellness & Prevention Center now provides school-based services in two high schools and five middle schools, as well as extensive community-wide prevention education. We caught up with Executive Director Susan Parmalee to learn more about their program and what steps parents can take to help their children and teens.

What is new at the Wellness & Prevention Center this school year?

Susan: Besides expanding service to the middle schools in Aliso Viejo (and in the next few months, Aliso Niguel High School), I am very excited about a contract we just signed with the County of Orange Health Care Agency that funds community education. This grant will allow us to implement extensive prevention education designed to increase the mental health literacy of adults and teens in South Orange County. Research supports the goal

of increasing a community’s mental health literacy in order to lower the stigma surrounding the diseases of mental health and addiction, increasing the chance that youth receive early interventions when warning signs first appear.

Why is early intervention so important?

Susan: The teen brain is amazing. After the newborn through toddlerhood stages, adolescence is the most active time for brain development and a crucial time for mental

The Power of Purpose

BY RYAN DAHLEM, ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL FOR STRATEGIC INITIATIVES, ST. MARGARET’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL sychologists and educators are researching and uncovering the reasons behind rising rates of mental and emotional health issues in our nation’s young people. Leading schools are paying attention and addressing these issues through later start times to promote healthy sleep habits, increased mental health education and resources, promoting healthy use of technology, and parent partnerships focused on appropriate expectations and priorities for children.

While important, these interventions leave unanswered a fundamental question underlying the experience of today’s busy students: Why? Bill Damon, director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence, sums it up this way: “The biggest problem growing up today is not actually stress; it’s meaninglessness.”

The antidote to meaninglessness is a sense of purpose, and educators are now exploring the pursuit of purpose as a vital component in the development of young people. The Stanford Center for Adolescence cites a growing body of evidence indicating that purpose is associated with academic achievement, vocational success, energy, resilience, and psychological and physical health throughout the lifespan.

But what is purpose, and how do we encourage young people to pursue it? Damon

defines purpose as “a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is at the same time meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.”

In short, find something that matters to you, connect it to a need in the world, take action and stick with it.

Damon’s team of researchers surveyed and interviewed more than 1,200 young people between the ages of 12 and 26, finding that only about 20% had found something meaningful to dedicate themselves to—a sense of purpose.

The remainder fell roughly equally into three distinct groups: the “dreamers,” those who have a variety of idealistic aspirations but have not yet taken action to put their ideas in motion; the “dabblers,” those who have taken many actions across a variety of topics, but without a deeper sense of meaning or sustained commitment; and the disengaged, those with no aspirations for purposeful engagement or any action taken.

What does the pursuit of purpose actually look like for a young person in the 20% identified by Damon Three recent high school graduates I know come to mind.

The first, Natalie, loved her math and science classes and joyfully pursued both subjects at the highest level. She also noticed there were fewer females in her advanced courses, so she started an annual math competition for girls that provided inspiration for younger students from throughout Orange County. Another stu-

dent, Jake, cherished his time in the outdoors during extended summer camps growing up.

He formed an outdoors club in high school and led his peers, many of whom were new to the outdoors, on local hikes. Years later, he is an instructor for a leading outdoor education outfitter, inspiring leadership, self-reliance and a love of nature in children. Finally, Jordan was fascinated by the political process and was active in a variety of congressional and international simulation organizations. Motivated by a national lack of teen voter turnout, she tirelessly organized local voter registration drives as a compelling peer advocate for civic engagement. She continues this work at her college in Washington, DC. In each case, the students were intrinsically motivated and experienced joy and meaning in their pursuits. Importantly, they found the intersection of what they love to do, their skills and a need in the world. This duality of purpose—something personally meaningful that has a positive impact on others—compels people to stick with it through ups and downs, developing resilience, optimism, their identity and a sense of belonging. These are the underpinnings of the positive effect of purpose on health and wellness.

So what role can adults play in the formation of purpose in children? Quite an important one, according to Damon’s book, The Path to Purpose: How Young People Find Their Calling in Life. While adults, especially parents, can’t determine a young person’s

purpose, there are a variety of ways they can help support it: 1. Model and explain your own sense of purpose. Children may misunderstand the work of parents and caregivers to be about meetings, deadlines and deliverables, while never hearing about the deeper meaning and impact of those tasks. Articulating how your work is personally meaningful and contributes to the world models a sense of purpose and even gratitude for children. This includes parents whose primary work is in the home raising children—something that will resonate with the primary beneficiaries of this purpose.

2. Have conversations with young people about purpose—without mentioning the word “purpose.” Young people have a lot on their plates, and the notion of discovering purpose can feel like a heavy burden. Start with finding opportunities to ask children what really matters to them. Follow up with “why?” questions to better understand the significance of their interests and how they might connect to a need in the world that leads to opportunities for action and meaning. As Damon puts it, “Listen closely for the spark, then fan the flames.” This dialogue helps personalize the underlying direction of purpose formation and can help “dabblers” prioritize. Dave Evans, who co-authored the book Designing Your Life and teaches a wildly popular course of the same title to Stanford undergraduates, calls this reflective process “compass building.”

3. Introduce children to potential mentors. The power of an inspiring adult who can guide a young person to seek their own purpose cannot be overestimated. In fact, of the hundreds of purposeful youth studied in Damon’s research, nearly all had mentors outside their homes. These adults serve as what Evans calls “brokers to the world,” with an ability to help young people connect their interests to needs and unseen opportunities in the world. The key to fostering agency and ownership in these mentoring relationships is to provide options, not answers.

4. Encourage an entrepreneurial attitude and optimistic outlook. Entrepreneurs are known for their ability to set goals, take risks, rebound from failure and find creative solutions. Approaching all of these with an optimistic, can-do attitude creates the momentum necessary to actually bring ideas into reality. This set of attributes also applies to purpose development and helps compel action, moving the “dreamers” toward purpose. The notion of prototyping is another tool entrepreneurs share with those pursuing purpose. Evans highly encourages prototyping experiences that range from imagining several different versions of purposeful action to interviewing those pursuing related forms of purpose to taking action at small-scale to gather feedback for reflection.

edro Almodovar’s latest film, Pain and Glory, is said to be influenced by Federico Fellini’s 8 ½ (1963). This is redundant and an understatement, but the comparison is also to be expected when you make a movie about a moviemaker. His answer to all of this is to take up experimenting with hard drugs on top of all his prescriptions.

Cruz appears as Salva’s mother in flashbacks. As is also the case with movies with fictional directors as the protagonist, one wonders how much is made-up and how much is art imitating life. For instance, just like Almodovar, the lead is a gay, Spanish filmmaker.

However, I hope that the drugs are primarily fabricated for the film narrative. Pain and Glory is a bit tame by the director’s standards, but it still represents a return to form after a brief dry period, and it offers an introspective, subtle performance from Banderas that’s worth viewing. CD

T

im Reynolds’ earliest memory of being drawn to music was when his older sister cranked up a Beatles LP in the living room of his childhood home.

From that point, he was locked in.

“Before I could play any instruments, I would grab my Tonka firetruck ladder and air guitar whenever the Beatles came on,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds just wrapped up the first leg of a tour as lead guitar for Dave Matthews Band—a band honored this month as one of the nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s official Class of 2020. On Nov. 13, he’ll perform with his own band, TR3, at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano.

While recalling what initially pushed him toward music, Reynolds says he grew up during an era of music that people are still trying to dissect to this day.

“Rock was in full force,” Reynolds said. “This continuous habit of humans making and evolving music is what keeps me so inspired. The Beatles were just the beginning.”

Charlottesville, Virginia laid much of the foundation for Reynolds’ music career during the ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s where he met a young Dave Matthews—who was working as a bartender at the time—and encouraged him to start a band. It’s also where Reynolds founded TR3 (Tim Reynolds Trio), an eclectic fusion of funk, rock and jazz.

“The jazz scene in Charlottesville was great. All I wanted to do was play jazz,” Reynolds said. “It wasn’t big time or anything like that, but I was booking gigs, playing jazz in town and growing as an artist. It was some of the best moments of

my career.”

Reynolds eventually relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico to pursue a solo career and then to Outer Banks, North Carolina in 2007. After meeting bass player Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier, a few rehearsals later and several gigs throughout North Carolina, Reynolds decided to resurrect the electric TR3—and they’ve been touring ever since.

The newest TR3 CD and vinyl, The Sea Versus The Mountain, was released in February 2019. Like Some Kind of Alien Invasion came out in October 2014. Their first double live CD, From SPACE and Beyond was released in June 2011.

Fans shouldn’t expect TR3 to emulate Dave Matthews Band’s sound, Reynolds cautions. While both bands don’t confine themselves to one particular style, Reynolds describes TR3 to be electric, funky, operatic and edgy.

The show is a mix of updated Reynolds’ classics to wild covers of everything from James Brown, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson and Focus, to TR3’s ever-evolving catalogue of new material, Reynolds said.

But each show is unique.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” Reynolds said. “Depending on the venue, the crowd, the vibes . . . taking it live is a whole other experience. Different places give you different energy, and it’s a different experience.”

Tickets are $20 to see TR3 at The Coach House on Wednesday, November 13. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Teens Drink Less When They Know the Facts Local schools see lower rates of teen drinking thanks to a new community education campaign

A

lcohol is everywhere: it’s on billboards, in magazines and movies, and in many homes. Seeing alcohol all around us may lead many parents and teens to mistakenly believe that drinking is an inevitable rite of passage for high school students.

But the fact is, most teens don’t drink— a fact proven by the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), administered by schools to more than 82,000 teens in 9th and 11th grades. According to the 2017–2018 anonymous student survey, 82% of South Orange County high school students surveyed did not drink alcohol in the previous 30 days.

Mission Hospital and social change agency Civilian launched two education campaigns during the 2017–2018 school year. One year into the campaigns, data analysis found that the schools included in the campaigns showed higher reductions in alcohol use—reductions of up to 43%—compared to other schools in Orange County and across the state.

While teen drinking has declined nationally and statewide, the schools included in the campaign showed significantly more marked change. Collaboration and support from community stakeholders such as the Capistrano and Laguna Beach Unified School Districts, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the Wellness & Prevention Center, Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach, and the Orange County Department of Education all contributed to the success of the campaign.

The teen-focused campaign and website, Strength in Numbers, provide peer-focused alcohol- and drug-use statistics, health impact information and links for local resources. The campaign engages teens WELLNESS AND through targeted online PREVENTION advertising, school club/

The parent-focused campaign and website, Raising Healthy Teens, provide adults with educational tools, drug- and alcoholrelated conversation starters and strategies to help teens develop self-esteem and connect with meaningful activities, both proven to further reduce the likelihood of alcohol and other drug use.

In addition, online discussions indicate that teens are avoiding drugs and alcohol for varied reasons: • They don’t like the way it tastes or makes them feel.

• They don’t want to get drunk, lose control, and/or do something they may regret.

• It is not good for their health, brain, body, teeth, breath, etc.

• Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco are a waste of money and/or calories.

• They don’t want drinking or smoking to affect grades, college or career prospects.

The most common activities teens are choosing instead of drinking include the following: • Doing their homework and studying hard so they can do well in school.

• Getting involved in social causes, church activities, or helping their neighbors because they care and want to make a difference.

• Expressing themselves through art, writing, dancing, acting or filmmaking.

• Playing sports.

• Exercising, eating healthy foods, and taking care of their bodies.

Mission Hospital is currently working to expand the highly successful campaigns to reach more students and parents, further reduce alcohol consumption and make a similar impact on marijuana, e-cigarette, tobacco and other drug use.

The end of October marks the annual Red Ribbon Week observance, reminding parents to talk to their kids about substance use. Research indicates teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use them.

For parents who may not know how to

have that conversation, there are resources available on Raising Healthy Teens, as well as an upcoming three-part dinner series called Date Night designed for parents and teens aged 12-17.

Why I’m Not a Matchmaker

I’

m a newspaper columnist. My topic: people age 50-plus seeking love. For 26 years, I’ve written about hundreds of seniors who’ve found love, and thousands who haven’t.

Knowing I have contact with so many older singles, people ask why I don’t fix people up.

There’s an easy reason: it’s too darn hard and seldom works.

It’s not that I haven’t tried. I’ve known widowers from San Clemente and widows from San Clemente and have suggested they get together. Some have, but in almost all cases, no match was made. And ON LIFE AND then, the people get mad at LOVE AFTER 50 me for wasting their time.

Granted, some couples have formed as a result of our Meet and Greet get-togethers at Tutor & Spunky’s, the Dana Point deli

I owned for 25 years before retiring. But I didn’t fix them up. They did it themselves by being willing to get off their couches and out of their houses.

Many couples who met there are still together. But not all. Some of the relationships have lasted for a month or so, while others resulted in marriage.

Sponsoring events like that is challenging.

Why? There are always more single women than men, especially as we age. Often, it’s been a ratio of 5- or 6-1. I’ve watched women walk in the door, see a limited number of men, and turn around and walk out.

It takes time and effort to put on those no-cost events.

Last week, a Dana Point woman emailed: “Maybe you should have Meet and Greets more often so seniors have a place to go and socialize instead of staying home. I know you are busy, so maybe you can have someone else take charge. Just a suggestion.”

She’s never attended one of our events.

My answer to her: “More often? It’s difficult enough having one per month, just trying to round up enough men to make it interesting.

More often than that? No thanks.”

Nearly every day, an email arrives in my inbox promoting new dating sites. This week, one arrived with the subject line: “An Easier Dating Site For Men Ages 50+.”

I usually ignore those emails, but this time I was curious so I clicked on it. It showed

a picture of an attractive woman with this caption: “Local matchmaker has more older women & needs more men to match with female clients.”

The opening line read, “Meet Successful Dana Point Singles.” Turns out, it’s not an online dating site, but a matchmaking site, the kind where you pay a professional matchmaker to find dates for you.

The site stated, “Professional Matchmakers work with you to determine the exact type of man or woman that would be best for you, and then do their best to find that person and introduce you.”

“Do their best?” Wow, matchmakers are only as good as the people they have in their

stable. Let me tell you, they are aware of the lack of men. I have had many of them contact me saying they were having an introductory cocktail party, and did I know of any men they could invite? No joke; it’s true.

It’s Just Lunch is a matchmaking service and on occasion has contacted me asking for the names of men. I decline, of course.

The ballpark cost for hiring a matchmaker?

The article stated it’s between $675 and $25,000.

The site also stated: “Matchmaking is, by its nature, a local endeavor. That means local offices staffed by warm, experienced, real people—not algorithms.”

Maybe the office is in Dana Point or San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano, but if so, I’m unaware of it. Avoid professional matchmakers. Read the online reviews; they are frightening. People often feel ripped off.

So, I’ll remain a columnist, and leave the matchmaking to, well, the professional matchmakers, wherever they are.

The Other Mission San Juan Texas Namesake Still an Active Church and Tourist Attraction

veryone remembers the Alamo. We learned about it in school.

But did we also learn that the Alamo began in 1718 as a Spanish mission not named Alamo? Or that 13 years later, just down the road, another Texas church was christened as Mission San Juan Capistrano?

Mission San Juan, as locals call it, is today an active church and a tourist attraction, part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, run by the National Park Service.

Founded in 1731, the Franciscan mission was converting indigenous people to Christianity 45 years before Franciscan Junipero Serra founded his own Mission San Juan Capistrano 1,200 miles west, in California, in 1776.

The Alamo, for all its notoriety, is but one of 28 Catholic missions built across Texas from 1632 to 1793.

The first was Mission San Clemente in 1632. It didn’t last, nor did a second Mission San Clemente attempted in 1684. Both were about 200 miles northwest of San Antonio.

Hostile Apaches weren’t having it.

The Alamo didn’t appear until 86 years after the first Mission San Clemente. The Alamo—renowned as a fortress—was actually Mission San Antonio de Valero.

Today, the Alamo is the jewel of San Antonio, operated as a tourist attraction by the State of Texas. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park showcases Mission San Juan and three other San Antonio missions.

“Each was a fortified village with its own church, farm and ranch,” a storyboard at Mission San Juan states. “Here, Franciscan friars gathered native peoples, converted them to Catholicism, taught them to live as Spaniards and helped maintain Spanish control over the Texas frontier.”

Mission San Juan includes trails, ruins, a museum and a San Antonio River walk.

“There is also a Mission San Juan Capistrano in the California mission system,” the website TexasMissionGuide.com says.

Visitors to the Alamo relive Texas’ daring 19th Century revolt from Mexico and a brutal 1836 battle in which 200 vastly outnumbered Texan defenders were overwhelmed by Mexican forces.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is about eight miles south.

LIFE AT MISSION SAN JUAN

“Only a fraction of the buildings of the self-sustaining community that was Mission San Juan can still be seen above ground today,” a storyboard states. “Archaeology and old Spanish records provide clues to help us imagine this settlement of as many as 200 souls.”

Morning bells called the mission community to prayer, before breakfast.

Franciscans taught the natives daily chores to perform. Boys older than age 12 learned to ride horses and herd livestock. Women tanned hides, ground grains and made pottery, baskets, candles and soap. Men underwent military training. Hunting, fishing, tending farms and harvesting were among the workloads.

As the community evolved, the natives’ culture based on hunting and gathering waned. “Adaptations expected of the natives were more than many could endure,” a storyboard says. “Natives left and returned, depending on food sources, Apache threats, epidemics and their commitment to Spanish life ways and Catholicism. Those who remained adapted to the Hispanic culture but continued to maintain cultural elements of their bands.”

Mission San Juan was a Spanish outpost along a royal road from Mexico known as El Camino Real—same name as Southern California’s El Camino Real that later would link 21 West Coast missions, including our Mission San Juan Capistrano.

WHAT ABOUT SWALLOWS?

The mission may have once had a migratory bird population—swallows—a trademark of California’s Mission San Juan.

Swallows aren’t evident today.

About 200 miles northwest of Mission San Juan, swallows can be found outside the town of Ballinger along a rural stretch of river once called “the Glorious San Clemente.”

The website TexasMissionGuide.com describes Mission San Clemente as a modest wooden structure built in the wilderness in 1632 near the joining of two rivers, the Rio Concho and Rio San Clemente.

The first Mission San Clemente lasted six months. Harassed by hostile Apaches, the Spaniards departed, promising to return to local Jumano Indians who desired an alliance, historians said. More than 50 years later, the mission was restarted “by the expedition of Juan Dominguez de Mendoza while it was camped on a river named the ‘Glorious San Clemente,’ from March 16 to May 1, 1684,” says the Texas State

This second Mission San Clemente didn’t last, either.

IN SEARCH OF MISSION SC

“The exact location (of Mission San Clemente) is not known,” says TexasMissionGuide.com. “There are several different historical markers in the area claiming to mark the site of the mission.”

The best-known marker is along Highway 83, between Ballinger and Paint Rock.

The river that early Spanish explorers called the San Clemente flows through Ballinger. Rio Concho bisects Paint Rock.

The two rivers join, east of Paint Rock, at what is now a reservoir. A little known Mission San Clemente historic marker stands along the banks. It’s on private property, inaccessible to the public.

Ten miles south in Millersview, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church erected its own monument in 1984 to mark the 300th anniversary of the second Mission San Clemente.

San Angelo, Texas, maintains a scenic Concho River Walk that includes a historic marker commemorating the 1632 founding of Mission San Clemente “near this site.”

None of these historic markers mentions “Rio San Clemente.” The name Rio San Clemente faded into history after the 1684 demise of the mission. The former river “San Clemente” now is just a short leg of a much longer river, Rio Colorado. It runs 862 miles from northwestern Texas into the Gulf of Mexico.

TEXAS’ COLORADO RIVER

Texas’ biggest river has the same name as a more famous Colorado River that winds some 1,450 miles from Colorado into Mexico. That Colorado River supplies South Orange County cities San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente with much of their water.

Texas’ Colorado is no slouch. It’s “truly the lifeblood of our state,” Texas’ Colorado River Alliance proclaims.

When explorer Mendoza eyeballed “the Glorious San Clemente” in 1684, little did he know that he could have followed the river all the way to the gulf.

The state capital, Austin, lines its stretch of the Colorado with a riverwalk. About 150 miles downstream, the Colorado empties into the gulf.

There, in 1685, French explorer La Salle tried unsuccessfully to establish a French colony. Its brief presence startled the Spanish, helping to assure the demise of Mission San Clemente.

La Salle “landed 180 colonists at Matagorda Bay in Spanish-claimed territory,” the Texas State Historical Association says. A reverent granite statue of La Salle rises 40 feet above of the bayshore near Indianola, Texas.

Final Stretch San Juan Capistrano football teams jockey for playoff positions

here are two weeks remaining in the football regular season, and four of the five San Juan Capistrano teams are all essentially locked into playoff positions.

Let’s check in on the city’s teams and the scenarios playing out over the season’s final weeks.

SAN JUAN HILLS

The Stallions (5-3, 2-0) are coming off a bye week after two weeks of dominating Sea View League play.

San Juan Hills won on the road against both Trabuco Hills, 42-7, and Aliso Niguel, 35-7, and the two games remaining on the Stallions’ schedule are home games against the league’s bottom two teams, Dana Hills on Friday, Oct. 25 and Laguna Hills on Nov. 1.

San Juan Hills, No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 4, likely will cruise to the league title and a high seed in Division 4. Both Dana Hills and Laguna Hills are improved overall this season, but the Stallions dominated both last season with a 49-0 shutout of Dana Hills and a 41-14 rout of Laguna Hills.

JSERRA

The Lions (5-3, 1-2) have stumbled the past two weeks.

JSerra took a big hit from a focused national No. 2 St. John Bosco, 49-10, but the Lions’ bigger loss came in a critical contest to Servite. With a 34-21 win, the Friars gained the edge on third place in the Trinity League.

JSerra, No. 6 in Division 1, finishes with two straight games at the Santa Ana Bowl, with a fight for fourth place against Orange Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 25 and the finale against national No. 1 Mater Dei on Nov. 1.

As things currently stand, JSerra is still solidly in position to remain in Division 1 come playoff time.

This season, CIF-SS reorganized its playoff divisions once again and created an elite 24-team grouping designated as Division 1 and Division 2. CIF will select the top eight teams to form the Division 1 playoff bracket based on a simple points system.

The CIF-SS coaches’ poll will grant teams up to 10 points for their position in the poll, with No. 1 receiving 10 points, No. 2 receiving nine points and so on.

Teams will then receive one point for each win over other Division 1 and 2 teams, and there is one extra point to be gained by winning a league championship.

JSerra currently has eight points and is tied with Servite for the No. 5 and 6 positions in Division 1. A win over Orange Lutheran would give JSerra another Division 1 point, and a loss to Mater Dei shouldn’t

drop JSerra far, if at all.

No. 7 Calabasas has six points, with another two potential points to be earned; No. 8 Bishop Amat has five points, with the potential for two more; and No. 9 Sierra Canyon has three points, with just one point potentially available.

Orange Lutheran is currently unranked and has only two points, but a win by the Lancers over JSerra could throw some chaos in the mix. However, with wins over Calabasas and Bishop Amat below them, JSerra could be just fine even with a loss.

SAN JOAQUIN LEAGUE

As three members of the four-team San Joaquin League, St. Margaret’s (7-1, 1-0), Capistrano Valley Christian (6-2, 1-0) and Saddleback Valley Christian (2-6, 0-1) have a late-starting and quick league schedule.

As such, things can change in a hurry, but a dominant win by St. Margaret’s and a dramatic overtime victory by Capistrano Valley Christian have both teams in line to secure the league’s two playoff spots.

St. Margaret’s beat SVC in a rout, 35-0, and CVC topped Webb in overtime, 28-21.

CVC scored on its first possession and intercepted a pass on Webb’s first play of the extra session.

JSerra senior Anthony Grover got back in the saddle at the Orange County Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado.

After not running in last year’s county championships, Grover broke his own course record by 11 seconds to capture his second county title at 14:34.3, his best run of the season. He originally set the record over the three-mile course at Oak Canyon Park in winning his first county title in 2017.

Grover is the reigning back-to-back Trinity League and Division 4 state cross country champion.

The county title win kicks off the focus of Grover’s season with the championship races.

Grover will ramp up through the Trinity League Finals on Nov. 8, CIF-SS Finals on Nov. 23 and CIF State Championships on Nov. 30. Grover will look to qualify and compete in the Footlocker National Championships in San Diego on Dec. 14.

VOLLEYBALL TEAMS OPEN CIF-SS PLAYOFFS The CIF-SS girls volleyball playoffs kicked off on Thursday, Oct. 24 with three San Juan Capistrano teams involved.

Results of the three matches were not available at press time, but check the South OC Sports Twitter and Facebook pages for updates. Second-round matches are Saturday, Oct. 26.

San Juan Hills earned the No. 2 seed in Division 2 after finishing as the runner-up in the South Coast League. The Stallions hosted St. Lucy’s of Glendora on Thursday, and with a win, San Juan Hills would play at the San Clemente-Woodbridge winner.

St. Margaret’s and Saddleback Valley Christian tied for the San Joaquin League title but will play in separate divisions.

In Division 3, St. Margaret’s hosted Fountain Valley and would play the winner of La Habra-Rosary in the second round.

In Division 4, Saddleback Valley Christian hosted El Modena and would play the winner of Viewpoint-Foothill Tech in the second round. CD thecapistranodispatch.com
