The unofficial “senior ditch day” at San Clemente High ended with students vandalizing the campus some time between 11 p.m.

Tuesday night and next morning.San Clemente Police Services Sgt. Scott Kennedy said school officials and students arrived Wednesday morning to find the entire campus covered with toilet paper, glitter and litter from overturned trash cans. An electronic scoreboard also ended up in the swimming pool. School officials estimated the damage at about $1,500, including clean up and a replacement of the old scoreboard on wheels that ended up underwater, Kennedy said. Word of senior ditch day was circulated among students, and the incident is being considered a senior prank, Kennedy said.

School Resource Officer Rod Valdez reported that campus surveillance cameras failed to capture footage of the vandals, Kennedy said.

DANA POINT The City of Dana Point Planning Commission announced it will hold a public hearing at its next meeting to consider an application by the County of Orange and OC Dana Point Harbor for a coastal development permit that would allow the construction of new directional signs at the Harbor. The request asks the city to approve the replacement of 15 signs in parkways and medians along Dana Point Harbor Drive, Island Way and Dana Drive. The proposed sign project is the next step in the nearly 15-year long quest toward the approximately $140 million Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Plan. The meeting will be June 11 at City Hall Council Chambers, 33282 Golden Lantern at 6 p.m. Anyone wishing to speak in favor or against this matter is invited to attend to address the commission.

…a SDG&E Protest?

THE LATEST: The City of San Juan is seeking a public hearing in protest of San Diego Gas & Electric’s attempt to demolish and rebuild the Camino Capistrano substation. The City Council voted to draft a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday, June 5, after they were notified that SDG&E had filed a notice with the CPUC on May 22 to proceed without any hearings.

“SDG&E has gone out of their way to make things especially difficult,” said resident Ian Smith.

In the letter, the city will ask CPUC Administrative Law Judge Darwin Farrar to also consider holding the public hearing in San Juan, instead of their offices in San Francisco or Los Angeles. The city is willing to provide a space free of charge.

“Everybody in our town is affected by this,” Councilwoman Laura Freese said.

SDG&E’s proposed plan includes constructing two buildings up to 50 feet in height and a 10-foot-high security wall.

WHAT’S NEXT: The city has 30 days from the time SDG&E’s notice was filed to protest. In its letter, the city will also ask for 60 days to review the proposed plan.

THE LATEST: Orange County’s 1.6 million voters mustered a 20.6 percent turnout for the State Primary Tuesday, June 5.

…Reata Park?

THE LATEST: The city-owned land, formerly known as the East Open Space Lemon Grove, will now be called the Reata Park & Event Center, after the San Juan City Council approved the name and a conceptual design for the proposed park on Tuesday, June 5.

The design features a welcome center, picnic areas, bicycle trails and an equestrian staging area. The San Juan Capistrano Open Space Foundation will pay for construction costs, projected at $2.7 million. The city, which will pay for an environmental review, committed staff time for $100,000—of which $83,000 has already been allocated for.

The estimated annual cost for maintenance is $102,000.

…the New Definition of ‘Church?’

THE LATEST: A new amendment to the municipal code will clarify San Juan’s definition of a “church,” after the City Council approved revisions Tuesday, June 6. The previous definition of “religious, fraternal or nonprofit organizations” included churches, temples, synagogues and other similar structures, but it did not provide any guidelines to clearly distinguish them. The new definition of a church is partly taken from that of the city of Rancho Cucamonga, after San Juan city staff researched several other cities’ municipal codes.

The code amendment is nearly six months in the making. The change was prompted after residents Chuck and Stephanie Fromm filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court because they were cited and fined for hosting weekly Bible studies at their home that regularly drew up to 50 people.

…Red-Light Cameras?

THE LATEST: Red-light camera citations will soon be a thing of the past, after the City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, May 30 to do away with cameras at two city intersections. Due to a projected loss of $39,000 in revenue for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the city will not renew its $232,800 annual contract with American Traffic Solutions to operate four red-light cameras at two intersections along Del Obispo Street, at Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano.

Since the Red Light Photo Enforcement Program began in 2000, traffic collisions have declined at the Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano intersections by 44.4 percent and 80.7 percent, respectively, according to the city’s Chief of Police Services Lt. John Meyer. However, as the program has served its intended purpose, the number of citations, along with the revenue from such citations, has also dropped. Red-light camera violations have also been challenged more successfully in the courts, according to City Attorney Omar Sandoval.

WHAT’S NEXT: Red-light citations will cease after September 29, but the city agreed to extend its agreement until December to process tickets already in the system.

Light Up the Halo Gang prevention program, Angels earn a win with atrisk Orange County kids

T

hey came by the busload, from all across Orange County. For many, it was their first time at Angel Stadium, let alone a baseball game, let alone a seat behind the Angels’ dugout, just a few yards out from the field. Yet there they were, four hours before the first pitch, lined up in rows of 30 or more in front of the stadium’s main entrance, between those two giant (size-649 ½, to be exact) red Angels baseball caps.

They weren’t there as a favor or because they had won some kind of raffle.

They were there because they had earned it in the classroom.

More than 1,200 students, from ages 9 to 13, accompanied by 200 parent and teacher chaperones, were guests of the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, June 4.

It was the largest VIP group ever hosted at Angel Stadium prior to a game.

San Juan students from Kinoshita Elementary, San Juan Elementary and Marco Forster Middle School were among those in attendance—students like 12-year-old Kiara Soto from Marco Forster.

“It’s big and colorful. A lot of red,” said Soto, who had never been to a baseball game before. “I’m excited to see the Angels play in real life and in person.”

The event was part of the Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership, or GRIP, a countywide incentive program geared toward young, at-risk students. GRIP is designed to increase school attendance and decrease gang activity.

All across Orange County, local GRIP committees, made up of parents, teachers and law enforcement officials, have serviced schools and areas that have high risk youngsters being exposed to gangs and gang activity.

Between 30 to 60 students from 34 different participating schools were identified for the program because of poor attendance, grades or behavioral problems. In January, the students were challenged by GRIP counselors to improve in these areas and, in return, get the chance to attend an Angels game.

In addition to right-field seats for the game against the Seattle Mariners that evening—the Mariners would go on to win, 8-6—students were also given

complimentary caps, taken on a tour of the stadium and allowed to sit behind the Angels’ dugout to take in both teams’ pregame warm-ups and batting practices.

But the highlight of the afternoon came when Angels manager Mike Scioscia, second baseman Howie Kendrick, Hall of Fame infielder Rod Carew and outfielder Torii Hunter, a fan favorite, spoke to the students about the challenges they overcame in their own lives and congratulated the students on their accomplishments.

“Make sure you do everything right now. Learn as much as you can, do as much as you can, get your education,” said Hunter, who was an unscheduled speaker because he had been away from the team to tend to family matters in Texas. “You have a dream and a goal, and you want to do something in life.

Whatever it may be, you make sure you go after that dream.”

In Defense of the Kids Deputy District Attorney Tracy Rinauro is the director of GRIP. She helped start the program in February 2008, after she was inspired by her years of experience as a gang prosecutor.

“I saw the destruction of lives. It was shocking to see how young the kids were that the gangs were targeting for recruitment. I’ve seen kids recruited as young as eight years old,” said Rinauro.

“I thought law enforcement had something they could offer to prevent crime from happening.”

According to a 10-year analysis of

gang activity published by the district attorney’s office in 2004, there were 338 known street gangs and 13,259 gang members at the time. From 1999 to 2011, the number of known gangs in Orange County decreased by 24 percent, while gang membership went down 33 percent, according to the district attorney’s office’s 2011 biennial report.

Still, gang activity remains a real threat in the county, even in communities where it might not be expected.

“It’s a huge problem. In some communities in southern Orange County, they almost just want to be blind to the fact that there is a problem because of their affluence,” said Jeremy Randall, an academic advisor at San Juan Elementary and a board member on San Juan’s GRIP committee. “San Juan is an interesting city. There’s affluence on one side, and across the creek, there’s poverty.”

San Juan is one of only six cities in Orange County with permanent gang injunctions—civil court orders that prohibit documented gang members from participating in activities that aren’t necessarily criminal, like harassment and intimidation, within a designated zone.

In San Juan, the northern most zone is located just south of Capistrano Valley High School and is bound three ways by Via Escolar, Trabuco Creek Road and Interstate 5. The larger southern zone is roughly bound by Junipero Serra Road, Del Obispo Street, I-5 and Trabuco Creek.

“There are a lot of gang bangers all around,” said Yadira Saldivar, 14, of

Marco Forster. Saldivar lives in the La Zanja neighborhood, located in the southern zone. Although she said it’s not difficult to avoid the gangs, she admitted that the reason she was identified for the GRIP program was due to her poor behavior in the seventh grade.

“I was going with the crowd. I thought it was cool, but when I got to the eighth grade, I realized that it was just not the right thing for me.”

In addition to incentive programs like the Angels game, GRIP also conducts neighborhood curfew checks and has installed a greeter program, where adult volunteers provide a physical presence in troubled neighborhoods.

“Nine times out of 10, if you’re in La Zanja, and if there’s a bunch of drug dealers right there but there’s also a greeter, are they going to try and talk to that kid? Absolutely not,” said Randall.

“We make our presence known by being in those neighborhoods and stationing ourselves there and letting them know it’s not okay to take our children.”

If there is one thing GRIP is not, it isn’t a “scared-straight” program. Reformed gang members are not brought in to talk to students, said Randall, because the program relies strictly on positive reinforcement tactics to encourage students.

“If you scare the kids, maybe one out of 10 will comply out of fear. With this type of approach, you give the kids something to work toward,” said Deputy District Attorney Frank Acosta.

The results are dramatic, according to participating schools. Since the program’s inception, schools have reported higher standardized test scores.

“We see them working harder on their homework and their class work, and, definitely, the behavior is up,” said Peggy Baerst, principal at Kinoshita Elementary. “We’re on their side. We want them to do well. We’re here to enrich and not to punish, and we want to reward them for good behavior and any improvement that they make.”

Since she became involved with GRIP, Saldivar said her grades have improved from Cs, Ds and Fs to As and Bs. Like Soto, Monday’s game was Saldivar’s first. Although the Angels lost, 8-6, Saldivar and her friends were excited to see Hunter, although admittedly more for his looks than his athletic prowess.

“He’s hot. He’s pretty good at baseball, too,” said Saldivar. “Today was pretty neat.”

Rinauro is a constant presence at several GRIP events this time of year, when schools begin to let out. Still, when GRIP students arrive at Angel Stadium every year, it’s an especially special occasion.

A woman, who was at home with her daughter, stated that she had been hearing noises coming from around the outside of her house. Although she did not see anyone, the woman was afraid it might be a person. Police called the woman back to let her know that they were checking the perimeter. Over the phone, the woman told police that most of the noise was now coming from the backyard area. She was asked to wait inside the house until the police knocked.

Trash Fees to Increase as of July 1

an Juan residents should expect to pay more for trash disposal service, after the City Council approved a fee increase on Tuesday, May 5. For a regular household with three 67-gallon trash bins, the resulting total rate will increase by 3.89 percent. The changes are effective July 1.

The base rate will increase by 4 percent with an additional 3.35 percent

increase coming from a tipping fee. San Juan must adjust the base rate to match any change in the Producer Price Index, as well as any changes in the Orange County Landfill Tipping fee. Because the rates are tied to the index and the tipping fee, they will be automatically reflected in residents’ and businesses’ bills.

The contract also includes additional services and benefits for the city and its residents. CR&R will develop and implement a special “universal” waste collection program at six locations for

11-Year Old Gets Special Cooking Opportunity

The California Department of Transportation will begin a roadway pavement rehabilitation project on June 18. The $4.9-million project will repair and replace damaged pavement on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Ortega Highway, from Interstate 5 on the west to just west of Reata Street and from east of La Pata to the San Juan Canyon Bridge.

The construction will include replacement of pavement striping and markers, adjustment of water valve boxes, monument covers, resetting manholes and the installation of an additional metal beam guardrail along the upper section of the road. Caltrans expects to finish the project in 90 working days. Night work will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., during which time at least one lane will remain open. Some grinding work is necessary, so some areas along Ortega Highway may experience noise. Adriana Guillen, an 11-year-old San Juan resident, received the first award presented by Watermark for Kids, a nonprofit organization that aims to help underserved local children thrive, on May 21 at The Fountains at Sea Bluffs retirement resort facility in Dana Point. Guillen’s dream is to learn how to cook to help her family and possibly as a future. Guillen will received sponsored tuition, courtesy of Watermark, to attend “In the Kitchen with Kids,” a farm-to-fork cooking program hosted by the Boys & Girls Club. Watermark will also give Guillen the opportunity to attend future cooking demonstrations and classes available at The Fountains at Sea Bluffs. Guillen was presented with a kid-size chef’s coat, which will be embroidered with her name and the title Junior Chef, and taken on a tour of the facility’s kitchen. “I really want to learn how to cook, so I can help my mom,” said Guillen in a release. “Our kitchen is small and my mom works late, so I don’t get the chance to cook.” Guillen also received cookbooks, cupcake tins, a mixing bowl and other cooking tools.

An insect that can transmit a fatal bacterial disease to citrus trees has been detected in San Juan. The Asian citrus psyllid, an aphid-like, flying insect, transmits a disease called huanglongbing, a potentially fatal infection that also causes trees to grow misshapen and bittertasting fruit. The City Council honored 27 students from Marco Forster Middle School who completed the Los Angeles Marathon on March 18. The students began training for the 26.2-run last October, practicing two to four times a week. “They feel a sense of belonging and learned to set long-term goals in a society where people want instant gratification,” said Mayor Larry Kramer. “It is a great pleasure to honor these students these evening.” Kramer and Mayor Pro Tem John Taylor read off the students’ names and presented them with certificates before they all joined together, coaches included, to take photos.

Don’t Trust the Poisoned Apple Cyberbullying the latest crop of technology

E

xacerbate, modish, refractory and taut —walk up to any group of kids around my age, and I have confidence that most of them would not know what a single one of those words meant. Ask them what the words comment, like, follow, and share mean—in terms of technology — and chances are, they would respond more to the words that they were comfortable with. The year 2012 is no longer just a year—it is the number of followers that you are expected to have on any social network.

The older technology becomes, the more havoc it brings to our modern world—costing families countless amounts of money and opening the doors for bullying.

Another issue that has grown steadily alongside technological developments is the cost of living. Living now is a lot different than it was in the year 2000, the year before the first iPod was released.

In today’s society, kids will be considered “un-cool” if they are the ones stuck with a flip phone while all the other kids are scrolling down their Instagram pages on their iPhones at lunch. Parents always want to give the best experience for their kids, and sometimes that can take over their judgment on what is a necessity and what is just for looks.

In this world, version is everything; a man who would invent one type of technology would be “a very rich man today…and do you want to know why?

The answer is one word: versions,” said humorist Dave Barry.

What is cyberbulling?

When a person repeatedly makes fun of another person online, repeatedly picks on another person through email or text message or posts something hurtful online about another person.

About 20 percent of the 4,400 students randomly surveyed in 2010 indicated they had been a victim of cyberbullying at some point. About the same percentage of students admitted to cyberbullying others. About 10 percent said they had been both victim and bully.

own problems. I do admit that I am one person who enjoys closing out the world at the end of a hard day by lying down and wasting time on my phone. However, for some, the hard day does not disappear when they go home; it travels with them, thanks to the invention of technology. In the last year, 40 percent of all teens that have access to technology of some kind have reported being cyberbullied at least once, according to the National Crime Prevention Center.

Before the invention of iPads, iPhones, iMacs and just about iEverything, home was a safe place that everyone could run to. According to cyberbullying expert Robin Kowalski, “If you bully somebody face to face, and they get upset, you see them cry and be hurt. When it’s over the Internet, you can’t see the emo-

tional reaction and go along thinking it’s no big deal.” The cyberworld has decreased our value on a safe society for teenagers, and bullying goes much more unnoticed now that there are all of these new inventions, allowing it to happen rather secretly. Of all of the bullying incidents that happen through technology, 20 percent of victims attempt suicide, according to a 2010 report from the Cyber Bullying Research Center.

One of those lost was the brother of my close friend all through grade school.

Words hurt, sometimes more than punches, because of the mental feeling of being worthless, not just the physical pain. Life was easier when apple and blackberry were just two kinds of fruits, not weapons that could potentially kill someone if used in the wrong way.

Letters to the Community SAY ‘NO’ TO PROPOSED UTILITY UPGRADES CAMERON GRENIER, San Juan Capistrano

By now, you may have heard about SDG&E’s proposed Reliability Project that so negatively impacts our historical city and residents. After attending SDG&E’s “charrette” session, their lack of willingness to address certain important related project topics piqued my curiosity and interest to research their claims concerning this proposed project. After concluding my research, I’m not buying their claim that this is to make electricity more reliable. It would appear this project is less about reliability and more about increasing power to other cities at San Juan’s expense.

Here are some facts: SDG&E proposes to more than double the size of the existing substation on Camino Capistrano, demolishing the old historical building that has existed on that site since 1918, and replace it with two 45 to 50-foot tall buildings and a 10-foot high, 360-foot-long wall — the length of a football field — smack-dab in the middle of dense residential neighborhoods and at the northern entrance to our historical downtown area. Nothing says, “ Welcome to Historic San Juan” like a massive electrical substation. In addition, SDG&E currently has two transmission lines at 138,000 volts each. They want to nearly triple the voltage running through residential neighborhoods and near schools by adding two more transmission lines of 230,000 volts each, while leaving in place one 138,000 volt line. You do the math.

Indeed, SDG&E admitted that the increased voltage will likely increase the electro-magnetic fields known as EMFs. SDG&E tries to dismiss concerns over health impacts from prolonged exposure to high levels of EMF by saying it’s not proven, but there are scientists on both sides of the issue. Some insist it causes higher incidences of brain tumors in adults and childhood leukemia. ABC and CBS local news have both aired stories recently about residents living near transmission lines and substations who are convinced that stray voltage in their neighborhoods has caused a host of health issues, including cancer and birth defects.

Many San Juan residents agree and are concerned that living close to transmission lines has caused them to develop cancer.

As a resident of San Juan and a mother, I ask: Why in the world would SDG&E risk exposing our residents and children as well as blighting our historic town like this? SDG&E admits that they explored “several other options” for moving the substation away from residents, actually saying it could be done, but they don’t want to because of the cost. Why should San Juan be “used” as the hub for electrical distribution to other cities? We don’t need the increased power. I say put the hub in the city that most needs it, such as the Rancho Mission Viejo company’s project. Their project is huge and will require the additional power. There is plenty of open space for a substation. It only makes sense.

I know you care about our lovely historical and recreational town like I do. We can make a difference by contacting the California Public Utilities Commission.

Your water bills are already extremely high and, after July 1, higher still as a 17.1 percent increase in sewer fees is imposed by the City Council. In my view, the City Utility Department is spiraling into virtual bankruptcy due to the voracious cash demands of the mal-designed Ground Water Recovery Plant or the Water Factory. The present deficit of $6.2 million is so alarming that the newest budget presented by city staff is designed to paper-over this deficit by ignoring the necessity of required capital replacement.

This is a huge mistake and costly in the long run; it’s a total misapplication of the budgetary system.

In the proposed budget, there is no provision for the $990,000 emergency electrical generator, which was recently determined to be vitally necessary because electrical failure leads to damage of the plant’s filtration system and the cost to repair the plant can be enormous.

Water pipelines in the San Juan Hills Estates neighborhood that have been deleted from the current budget are being literally dissolved by our corrosive water. Replacement will just have to wait until an uncertain future time. These and other items are straining our “Russian Roulette” budget policy since failures will be extremely costly. Everyone at the city knows that if you ignore the requirement for maintenance, you’ll pay more in the long run. The necessity for these expenditures does not “just disappear.”

This reminds me of my apocryphal cousin — shall we name him “Sam” — who owned a camel business in the desert. One day, he decided that he wanted Page 10

the business to show more profit, so he eliminated the money for camel-food. I think you know precisely what happened after that.

So it’s springtime in San Juan and the City Council is engaged in “budget hearings” with, of course, an eye to re-election stage management in November. The name of the game — and it is a game — is to convince you that all is well, which it is not, and induce you to go back to sleep, which you should not. The council has a delusion that we will benefit by building this Water Factory in order to reclaim and purify our own subterranean water. The Metropolitan Water District charges $861 for one acre-foot of water. Yet our city pays more than $1,800 per acre-foot to “manufacture our own water,” according to Utility Department records. Why are we paying twice as much for the privilege of making our own water in a rinky-dink, unreliable water factory?

The water district is a multibillion-dollar, seasoned organization that has been reliably delivering water to all of Southern California for more than 100 years.

There’s no logical reason — other than political — why the council wants us to switch away from this stable water provider and build a local water factory, which is twice as costly and much less reliable. Additionally, no one wants to tell you that, in 23 years, after the ratepayers of San Juan have poured countless millions of dollars into this mal-designed water factory, we will be forced to surrender the plant to the San Juan Basin Authority. This makes no sense. I think we need to search for other solutions.

During budget time, it appears that the City Council surrenders logic to fantasies of grandeur.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION and the baby blues

What is postpartum depression? We hear that label being tossed around all the time, but there seems to be much confusion as to what it is. Postpartum depression is not the “baby blues.” The baby blues is a term used to describe the common feelings of weepiness and slight overwhelm that occur in up to 80% of women following birth. The baby blues typically disappear around two weeks postpartum and cause no serious life disruption for the new mother.

Postpartum depression, on the other hand, is a clinical depression, meaning that the symptoms are severe enough to necessitate psychological treatment. Postpartum depression can appear anytime during the first year postpartum.

While each woman suffering with postpartum depression has her own experience, the most common symptoms are sad mood, irritability, a constant feeling of overwhelm, excessive worry, hopelessness, sleep disturbances, struggles to bond with the baby, loss of interest in things previously enjoyed, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating, and, in extreme cases, thoughts of suicide.

In our society, there are strong “expectations” for birth to bring much joy and excitement to new mothers. So, when postpartum depression surfaces, it is often with shame, disbelief, guilt, and confusion. In my practice, I often hear mothers plead, “I was so looking forward to being a mom.

How can I feel this way?” My patients are often looking for answers as to “Why me?” and “How can I make this disappear?” While postpartum depression is certainly not the normal way for mothers to feel, it is, unfortunately, quite common, afflicting between 15-20% of mothers.

Risk factors for developing postpartum depression include having a personal or family history of depression or anxiety, a lack of family or friend support, a history of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and thyroid dysfunction. The promising news about postpartum depression is that it can be treated with great success by professionals trained in this area. Psychological approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy, coaching the mother on proven self-care techniques, eliciting family and friend support, and medication therapy.

AT THE MOVIES: ‘SNOW WHITE’ MAKES AN EFFORT In Universal’s fantasy blockbuster Snow White & the Huntsman, how can a queen played by Charlize Theron — one of Hollywood’s most beautiful women — envy someone as tomboyish and casual as Kristen Stewart? And how is it that, amazingly, the Oscar-winning actress is less impressive than the Twilight star? The live-action twist on the classic fairytale adds a few new elements, a few new characters and a couple of surprises. Like the original Brothers Grimm tale, there is a young princess (Stewart), an evil queen (Theron), a man (Chris Hemsworth) sent to hunt her, a prince (Sam Claflin), some dwarves and a magic mirror. There’s also the queen’s creepy brother (Sam Spruell), who actually is a bit scarier than his sister. Some fairies and black crows also make an unnerving appearance. Snow White boasts some of the most visually attractive art direction and cinematography yet this year, and that alone makes the film worth viewing. Of the leads, Stewart surprisingly has the most impressive foreign accent and subtle performance, while Theron creates a more animated© 2012 Universal Studios turned-hammy character, more Razzie worthy than Oscar. Unfortunately, first-time director Rupert Sanders who had to work with stale dialogue and underdeveloped characters, doesn’t glamorize his heroine and in fact makes her less passive than previous portrayals. For an entertaining, memorable adaptation of the fairytale, movie fans would enjoy Disney’s 1937 classic and the 1997 TV movie with Sigourney Weaver more. — Megan Bianco

Start Livin’, Donovan Frankenreiter’s fifth album, is “basically a love album,” says the Orange County musician. “Most of the songs are about my wife and our two boys, and the life that we’ve built together in Hawaii.”

Thanks to Frankenreiter’s infectious warmth and finely honed pop sensibilities, each song has the singular effect of drawing the listener into that bright and breezy world for a blissed-out moment.

What is the most meaningful song on your album?

I don’t know. Maybe Start Livin’. It’s the theme of the new album. It’s all about living in the moment and enjoying what you have today. I heard a great quote the other day that said, “Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future and today is a gift—that is why they call it the present.” That is, Start Livin.’

How influential is living in Hawaii to your songwriting? It’s very influential but not everything I write Page 23

about. I write about the life I live on the road and what happens when you are out there. I think living in Hawaii inspires the sounds you hear on the album: the lap steel (guitar), the uke, etc.

What other projects are you working on? I am on the road so much that I find myself working on the most important project–just trying to be with my family as much as possible.

Will you have any time to take a break and catch any of nearby San Clemente’s superlative breaks? Yes, of course. It’s one of the best surf towns in the U.S. with some of the best surfers in the world. It’s where I grew up surfing. I love San Clemente’s beaches.

Narcissitic-Type Behavior an Obstacle to Finding a Mate Self-centeredness among dating a challenge singles face n February, a woman I’ll call Beth emailed that she had been dating a man for a year. “We are both 50. We have much in common and spend a lot of time together, almost every weekend. He has a good heart. He loves me very much, and I love him, too,” Beth wrote.

This week, Beth sent a surprising update: “Lately, he has been displaying behavior that leads me to believe I am dating a narcissist.

“Everything is about him now: ‘I,’ ‘Me’ and ‘Myself.’ I was too naive to see the signs. He likes to be catered to and I told him to start doing things for himself.

“He was sweet and always concerned about me in the first year, but now he manipulates me, plans things without consulting me and gets upset and sulks when he doesn’t get his way.

“He gets offended easily; I end up apologizing a lot. But lately, I stopped apologizing; I stand up to him and he backs off. I feel betrayed because I trusted him all of this time. I have invested all of my emotions into this man and now I have to learn how to take them back.”

been done differently. I kept trying harder to please him. He eventually had an affair, and we separated.

“After a few weeks, I started feeling contented and realized I hadn’t felt that way for a long time. My friends commented that I blossomed once I was away from him.

“One thing narcissists are really good at is reading people. When you are about to exit the relationship, they will suddenly ‘get’ the things you have been telling them you need from the relationship. They say and do things that give you hope that things will change. But those changes never seem to last.”

I suggested to Beth that perhaps she and her man should try counseling.

“I don’t think you can change a man who is set in his ways; I realize he is a bully,” Beth said.

On June 5 City Council approved a decision to invest $50,000 towards an upgrade of the Capo Sports Rink, a facility which has become run down and ragged-looking.

“The operator is investing $50,000 to upgrade the facility for a safe and enhanced facility for the community’s use and also providing roller hockey leagues; Lacrosse; soccer arena games and other sporting activities for the residents,” Community Services Manager Cynthia Alexander said in a statement.

Currently the rink, located on the shared field between Marco Forster

Middle School and Kinoshita Elementary, is the home to many youth and adult hockey and soccer leagues that could stand to gain from the facilities upgrades.

The nets that encircle the rink are sagging, and there are overgrown weeds that encompass about three quarters of the rink on the outside.

The upgrade will hopefully fix all that. There are plans to repair the netting, restore the panels on the side of the rink and resurface the playing floor.

St. Margaret’s Lacrosse Coach Gerry Manning Steps Aside

erry Manning, who started the lacrosse program at St. Margaret’s 15 years ago, announced May 30 that he will be stepping down from the head coaching position.

“I have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into building this program from the ground up,” Manning said. “But it’s just time for me to step aside and take a back seat.”

On June 6 the Tartans announced that former San Clemente head coach Glen Miles will replace Manning as the new varsity boys lacrosse coach.

During Manning’s 12 years as their varsity head coach, the Tartans compiled an impressive 123-54 record, winning roughly 69 percent of their games

played. In the highly competitive Trinity League, the Tartans have gone 43-5, including six consecutive league titles dating up to this past year.

In the early 2000s, St. Margaret’s, along with Foothill High, were the only CIF-ready lacrosse teams in the area.

The Tartans traveled to San Diego in the early goings to play against recognized

schools down south. In 2005, the Tartans won the State Club Championship.

Five All-Americans and three Academic All-Americans have played for Manning over the years. The coach keeps track of his former players, reciting from memory the different schools his players have gone on to attend.

Manning was also an advocate of getting lacrosse recognized as a CIF Southern Section sanctioned sport when the game was gaining momentum in Southern California. “(Lacrosse) has certainly grown over the years. I remember me and John Fox (of Foothill High) and others fighting to get it recognized. We got resistance from the other sports who wouldn’t share their athletes,” Manning said.

“What coaches didn’t realize is that playing lacrosse made kids better athletes.”

Manning went on to describe how the sport is now anchored into the Southern California sports scene.

An avid musician and harmonica player, Manning was quick to point out the similarities between music and his coaching style.

“Coaching is like orchestrating a piece of music,” Manning said. “I’ll miss the camaraderie, the kids, being with the coaches on the field and having fun.”

Although he won’t be the head coach anymore, Manning will still be a presence on campus at St. Margaret’s. As a physical education teacher, Manning has plans to help out with the middle school’s lacrosse program and remain active in the lacrosse community.

“Next year, when game time comes around, I’m sure I’ll still be pacing a little bit,” Manning said with a laugh. CD

EAGLES WIN THE BATTLE OF SAN JUAN BUT LOSE IN DIVISION 6 FINAL

t came down to one pitch.

One more strike and St. Margaret’s would have moved on to the CIF Southern Section Division 6 Championship game.

One more strike and Capistrano Valley Christian would have been sent home packing.

It was that one pitch that Eagles senior Jacen Carpenter needed to start a gritty, incredible, three-run comeback May 29. A comeback that put Capistrano Valley Christian up for good, 6-5, in the top of the seventh, punching their ticket to the final game.

The next pitch he saw, Carpenter slapped down the right field line and in for an RBI double that made it 5-4.

The team, and the dozens of fans in the stands, came alive.

Senior captain Kyle Pickell followed that up with another clutch hit, this one a single, knocking in two runs.

All of the Eagles damage was done with two outs.

“I wanted it. I just didn’t want my senior year to end like that,” Carpenter said. “I was going to do whatever it took to win. (The pitch) was a fastball on the outside, and I just took it the other way…I’m on top of the world.”

It was only fitting that Carpenter came on to pitch in the bottom of the seventh to get the save and stop a possible Tartan comeback by getting three outs in a

row to end the game.

The Eagles struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

St. Margaret’s then began to chip away, scoring one run in the second inning and two more in the third to tie things up at three.

A big two-run inning for the Tartans in the bottom of the fi fth broke up the tie that had lasted for one frame.

Senior catcher Matt Miyamoto doubled to right-centerfield, junior Harrison White drew a walk and senior Byron Manzo hit the first pitch he saw into the gap in left-center, bringing in both Miyamoto and White to take the lead, 5-3.

Eagles coach Clemente Bonilla decided to use senior pitcher Sam Eichler off the bench to try and stop the bleeding

and hold the Tartans at five runs, which Eichler did by retiring the five batters he faced in order.

Eichler’s efforts, coupled with the late game heroics by the Eagles’ bats, set up the wild comeback and ensured that they will live to play another day. “(This win) shows our character.

When you’re down, it shows your training and the focus…to not get outside yourself,” Bonilla said. “It proves to (the team) that we are a team that can win a Division 6 Championship this year.”

Unfortunately for the Eagles, they ran into an equally hot Desert Christian team in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 Final on June 2 and lost 4-2. an Juan Capistrano-based big wave surfer Nathan Fletcher, 35, was the top prize winner at the 2012 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards last month at the Grove Theater in Anaheim.

Fletcher won the coveted Ride of the Year award and the $50,000 prize that comes with it for his massive August 27 tube ride at Teahupo’o in Tahiti. The same ride got him nominated for the $5,000 Monster Tube award, which he was presented with as well. A third honor—the Surfline Best Performance award—was also given to Fletcher making him the first surfer in the history of the Billabong XXL to take three titles in the same year and bringing his total

winnings up to $60,000.

Fletcher expressed surprise at the trio of honors saying he didn’t expect to be up for one award, much less three.

“It’s a huge honor. I didn’t expect that out of myself,” said Fletcher at the event. “The wave at Teahupo’o was pure fate. Somehow it just popped up and I was the one who got it. Somehow, I’m not sure, maybe Sion (Sion Milosky was a former award winner who drowned in 2011) gave it to me. I can’t believe it.

I guess it is all the result of hard work and I am very appreciative of that.”

Greg Long of San Clemente, who was also in the running for Ride of the Year, took third place honors and $1,500 for a giant wave he paddled into May 19 at Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

Kruthers Runs Her Way to Fourth at State

an Juan Hills High senior runner Chelsea Kruthers had all the momentum going into 800 meter final heat at the California State Track and Field Championship June 2. After running a personal best 2:09.29 in her preliminary heat June 1, Kruthers was awarded a No. 2 seeding for the finals June 2, continuing a hot streak that dates back to early May. Kruthers joined the other nine

runners who qualified for the State final heat and ran a 2:09.98, earning her a fourth place finish.

It was the first time in school history that San Juan Hills had a member of the girls track and field team qualify for State.

“My goal was to break the 2:10 barrier and I wanted to get into the top three or top five,” Kruthers said.

“I wanted to have a good race and end my senior year with a bang. Getting there (to State) was the goal so I was happy just to make it.” Kruthers said.

Kruthers called her prelims race at State the “best race she’s ever ran” and achieved her goal of breaking 2:10 in the 800 meter in both her heats.

Kruthers caught fire the last few weeks of the track and field season, finishing inside the top three in the CIF Southern Section Championships and the CIF Masters events, which earned her the right to go to State.

“I felt like I hadn’t made it past the (Southern Section) finals before so I made sure I did,” Kruthers said. “The following week at CIF Masters I fin-

ormer JSerra pitcher Joe Kurrasch was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB draft. Kurrasch is currently pitching for Penn State as a redshirt junior after transferring from the University of California, Berkeley.

Kurrasch, who lists the Giants as his favorite team on his Penn State website bio, was the 268th overall pick.

As a member of the JSerra team, Coach Brett Kay remembers the big, hard throwing lefty and his talent very well.

“When he came here (as a transfer from Santa Margarita) he immediately became our guy on the mound,” Kay said. “He was a force on both sides of the plate predominantly with his fast ball….He was the guy who wanted the ball. And teams feared him for that.”

Kay went on to say that Kurrasch would consistently throw fastballs upwards of 86 to 89 mph and had two reliable off-speed pitches, a get-meover curve and a slider that he used as an effective strike out pitch. Kay has not had a chance to see him pitch since he left JSerra.

Kurrasch was solid in his 2011 campaign, which was also his debut

season for the Nittany Lions. He went 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 16 appearances, 11 of which were starts.

Kurrasch obviously saved his best stuff for when Penn State played other Big Ten schools, as his in-conference ERA dropped to 1.71 and was third in the conference in strikeouts with 78.

Dubbed “Jumbo Joe” by his JSerra teammates, it is unclear whether Kurrasch will accept the offer into the Giants system. If he declines, he will still have two years of college eligibility left, where he can try and improve as a pitcher and possibly improve his draft stock. CD Page 30

San Juan Hills Football Wraps up Spring Practicing The San Juan Hills football squad will end its run of spring practices June 14, only to return to the field June 23 for the Stallion Shootout, a passing league tournament that will feature schools from around the county. Saddleback Valley Christian will also be among the participating teams.

The Stallions placed third in the Rancho Cucamonga Passing Tournament May 19 and are looking to build on that success at their own tournament.
