SAN CLEMENTE A portion of the newly approved San Clemente General Plan could allow for the creation of an emergency homeless shelter within the city. However, the city itself would not be required to build the shelter, officials said. The new housing element of the general plan includes a program designed to comply with Senate Bill 2, a law passed in 2007 that requires cities and counties to designate a zone where emergency shelters and transitional housing can be placed. The city’s new housing element includes such language, according to Denise Obrero, the city’s social services program planner. Obrero said in an email that the designated zone will likely be the entire Rancho San Clemente Business Park area. However, the city is not required to build a shelter.

More questions were asked than answered Monday as the Dana Point Planning Commission continued a public hearing on the proposed Doheny Hotel. One thing was certain, however. The hotel’s fate will not be decided until at least April 14. Initially, Beverly Hills Hospitality Group introduced a 250-room hotel on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Dana Point Harbor Drive and asked for a height variance to the city’s 35-foot limit to accommodate five stories. Dec. 9, the developer announced modifications to include 0.76 acres of parkland to ease access to the hotel’s entrance, house parking and taxis and serve as an additional loading dock. As it originally stands, a single loading dock would be located on PCH. Such use would require City Council and county approval.

…the Double Homicide?

THE LATEST: A man and a woman found dead in their home in an upscale San Juan Capistrano neighborhood were gunshot victims, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The bodies of Bradford Hans Sachs, 57, and Andra Resa Sachs, 54, were discovered early Sunday morning in their home at 32271 Peppertree Bend.

Their 8-year-old son was also shot and transported with serious injuries to a local hospital, where he remains. The Sachs’ two teenage daughters were in the house at the time of the shootings.

Authorities said Wednesday there was no sign of forced entry into the home.

The Sachs divorced in 2000 but were residing together at the time of their deaths. The couple were noted entrepreneurs but were also mired in several lawsuits and business disputes.

City Attorney Hans Van Ligten said both sides of the recall were protected by the First Amendment and had the right to speak. Byrnes requested the council reconsider the 2006 resolution at its next meeting.

WHAT’S NEXT: Authorities have yet to identify a suspect. Investigators are looking into the Sachs’ current and past business relationships, although they’ve yet to determine whether the couple were targeted.

THE LATEST: Mayor Sam Allevato has amassed more than $67,000 in his campaign war chest to counter a recall effort against him, according to contribution papers filed Jan. 31.

Allevato received donations from about 90 individuals and organizations.

Notable contributions include $100 from former city manager and current Rotary Club President Dave Adams and Historical Society member Jan Siegel; $200 from Christine Kramer, wife of Councilman Larry Kramer; and $1,000 from Councilman John Taylor.

THE LATEST: Mayor Sam Allevato will represent the city on a community engagement panel formed to discuss the decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric, the majority owners of the plants, announced the commission’s formation two weeks ago, as part of a broader statement of principles for the decommissioning process.

The panel also includes Dana Point Mayor Lisa Bartlett, San Clemente Mayor Tim Brown, Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees President John Alpay, Orange County Supervisor Pat Bates and Gene Stone, a leader of the local environmental movement and founder of Residents Organized for a Safe Environment.

…the Via Madonna Speed Humps?

THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano City Council last Tuesday unanimously approved a petition from a group of residents to add speed humps on Via Madonna, between Via Del Cerro and Camino Santo, a block from Ambuehl Elementary School.

Residents living on Via Madonna and the surrounding neighborhood complained that speeding cars threatened neighborhood children, as well as students.

Although the city’s Police Services did not object to the speed humps, the Orange County Fire Authority recommended against them, saying they would add 10-20 seconds to response times. However, Mayor Sam Allevato said the greater concern was the safety of the residents and children.

“Seconds are important in an emergency situation, but it is outweighed here. The benefit far outweighs the possibility of time,” Allevato said.

WHAT’S NEXT: City Traffic Engineer George Alvarez is preparing plans for the installation and location of the speed humps. Alvarez said a contractor will begin work in late March.

u The Fiesta Association has two events scheduled this month, leading up to the grand event, the 56th Swallows Day Parade.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, guests are invited to partake in an evening of food, drinks and entertainment at the Taste of San Juan. The event takes place at El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and brings together several local restaurants that will be offering samples of their finest dishes. Guests will then vote for their favorite food in different categories. Winners will be announced at the end of the evening.

Tickets for the Taste of San Juan cost $20 per person and can be purchased at the door. To purchase tickets in advance, visit the Chamber of Commerce, 31421 La Matanza Street, or attend any Fiesta Association membership meeting. Meetings take place every Wednesday until the parade, starting with social time at 6:30 p.m. The Fiesta Association meets in the Nydegger Building, located behind the Women’s Club at the corner of El Camino Real and El Horno Street.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, the family-friendly Kids Pet Parade returns to Los Rios Park.

Children of all ages are invited to dress up with their pets and enter into the parade. Ribbons will be awarded to all 1st-place through 4th-place finishers in several categories, including best team costume (owner and pet), best domestic or household pet, best barnyard or farm animal, best exotic pet and best bird.

First-place winners will be given a $10 Petco gift card. The winner of the “Judges Choice” award will also be invited to take part in this year’s Swallows Day Parade.

Councilman Larry Kramer had repeated the Utilities Department’s report that currently, in 2014, the cost of water from the Metropolitan Water District and from the Groundwater Recovery Plant are about the same. Reeve disputed that statement by quoting 2012 data. Reeve, as council member, has been receiving reports showing that the all-in costs of the recovery plant have been falling since 2011.

I am writing in response to Mayor Sam Allevato’s opinion column (“Your Questions Answered,” Jan. 10-23), in which he states his “decision making is something residents should consider … during the election cycle.”

I agree that we should consider his decision making. To begin, let’s consider the council’s illegal method of water billing. It was brought to Allevato’s attention on at least two occasions by the Capistrano Taxpayers Association, a volunteer group of residents. Allevato ignored the concerns and proceeded with the billing, which was deemed illegal by Orange County Superior Court Judge Gregory Munoz.

Let’s consider Allevato’s decision to appeal the judge’s ruling, costing us taxpayers many thousands more in additional legal fees.

Let’s consider Allevato’s decision to have news publications removed from city property. This is clearly a violation of the First Amendment, state law and our municipal code. This decision The Capistrano Dispatch February 14-27, 2014

is costing us taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. When a governing entity wants to silence reporting on the government’s activities, it is cause for suspicion and concern. What is he trying to hide?

Let’s consider that Judge James Di Cesare had to step in to temporary put a stay on the newspaper ban. Once again, not just the townspeople find Allevato’s decisions illegal, a judge has as well. Let’s consider the additional cost in attorney fees to continue to pursure, in court, Allevato’s efforts to ban news publications.

New let’s consider the $93,000 to $100,000 in special election cost. This is a one-time expense of just under $5 per household.

Let’s consider that we do have an election in November, but Allevato will not be on that ballot. November is an excellent opportunity to retire councilmen Larry Kramer and John Taylor from their duties too, considering that they have played an integral part in much of Allevato’s folly.

Allevato states that, “slightly over a year ago … thousands of residents voted me back into office for my third full term.” This is true, but he barely won (by around 300 votes) despite being a nine-year incumbent and outspending his opponents 10-to-1.

Let’s consider the offensive glossy mailers Allevato’s supporters have spent tens of thousands of dollars to create and mail to each of us. It reminds me of something I heard about “the company you keep.”

To finalize this consideration, Allevato states that “recalls should be reserved for public officials that have violated the law, committed ethical violations and such.” In my opinion, he is correct here, and it is obvious that he too sees the value in his recall.

We cannot afford Allevato’s bad decisions. Please support your resident volunteers circulating the recall petitions.

HOW MUCH WILL WE BE PAYING FOR A THIMBLE FULL OF WATER? —Melissa Kaffen, San Juan Capistrano

Given that we are experiencing a record statewide drought, our City Council majority’s decision to “go it alone” and build the Groundwater Recovery Plant appears positively clairvoyant, until you take a closer look.

According to Felicia Marcus, chairwoman of the state Water Resources Control Board, “We need to conserve what little we have to use later in the year, or even in future years.”

What the government agencies, including our council majority failed to consider is the following alarm raised by water experts like Heather Cooley, co-director of the water program for the Pacific Institute, a water policy think tank in Oakland.

“The challenge is that in the last drought, we drew down groundwater resources and never allowed them to recover,” Cooley said. “We’re seeing long term, ongoing declining groundwater (aquifers) levels, and that’s a major problem.”

Aquifers are natural underground reservoirs that play an important role in regulating the osmotic pressure of the arable land mass, especially in coastal areas. Long-term depletion of ground water can cause both the size and storage capacity of these underground reservoirs to permanently shrink, which further complicates the problem of salt water intrusion from lowered osmotic pressure in the coast land masses.

ductive and populous state in America.

As Southern California’s population grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile the water needs of homeowners with those of farmers. It now appears that the exorbitant cost of water in our village will do what no elected official has ever had the courage or brains to do: limit population growth and news household demand for water by limiting massive, unsustainable future land development projects.

How long will it before we in San Juan pay triple the price to use 75 percent less water because our council majority chose to “go it alone,” paying all the build, maintenance and repair costs of a chronically malfunctioning groundwater plant—that just so happens to also help mitigate the water demands of the next massive new home project to our east?

Watch what happens to property values when people find out they can’t afford to take a bath in San Juan due to the spiraling costs of a faulty and perhaps unsustainable local groundwater recovery plant.

The Curious Case of the OC Public Administrator The decision to merge the position with the DA’s office is more a ‘sideshow’ than ‘true solution’

W

hile most midterm elections are generally bland events with minimal voter participation, it appears the 2014 election cycle is starting to get spicy. Due to term limits, south Orange County will be seeing a turnover in several significant state and county offices, including the 73rd Assembly seat, 38th Senate District and the 5th District Board of Supervisors seat.

Considering the recent news of 73rd Assembly candidate Jesse Petrilla’s 2001 felony assault with a firearm conviction and Rep. John Campbell’s retirement from Congress, the election season is alive with notable headlines.

To add to the list of interesting election situations is the case of the Orange County Public Administrator, formerly an elected seat that had been vacant since 2012, when its occupant, John Williams, resigned. This was, in part, due to scathing mismanagement charges detailed in two 2009 Grand Jury reports.

In a recent supervisor’s agenda, county staff defined the role of Public Administrator as one that “protects the assets and affairs of deceased residents who, at the time of their death, leave no heirs, no will, no named executor or an

executor who is ineligible and whose estates have no person willing to serve as an executor or administrator for whatever reason.”

After Mr. William’s resignation, the Board Evan Chaffee of Supervisors voted to cut the position’s full-time, six-figure salary to a part-time position, earning $30,000 annually, as a step to dissuade potential corruption. Additionally, the supervisors opted to include ballot Measure A in the 2012 general election to turn the seat into an appointed position rather than an elected office every four years. Rejecting the measure, Orange County residents overwhelmingly voted to keep the Office of Public Administrator on the ballot with 60 percent of the vote.

Less than two years later, after several candidates filed to run for the vacant seat in 2014, the Board of Supervisors voted at their Jan. 28 meeting to merge the Public Administrator office with the District Attorney’s office. As a subsidiary of the DA’s office, there will be little or no cost savings for taxpayers,

as the Public Administrator’s budget will be absorbed by the DA. There will be less transparency for voters with the position’s accessibility and visibility reduced in the process. While the DA’s office is qualified to manage these cases, it would seem that their efforts should remain devoted to their mission statement; enhancing public safety and welfare through the enforcement of criminal and civil laws.

Regardless of the Public Administrator office’s tarnished reputation, merging the office with the DA seems to be more of a sideshow than a true solution.

The supervisors made some effort to fix the problem in 2012. Measure A appropriately gauged voter opinion that the electorate retain the right to choose their public administrator. The requirement that appears to be missing is a professional standard to run for and hold the office of Public Administrator.

For example, in order to stand for Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector candidates must be certified public accountants, and the DA must be a licensed attorney.

Considering that the role of Public Administrator relies heavily on probate

law, it would have been more appropriate if the board had established a professional standard requiring membership in the California bar to be eligible to hold this office. Prior to the action of the board of supervisors, two qualified licensed attorneys filed to run for the office. Nevertheless, three of the five members of the board voted to merge the Public Administrator office into the DA’s office, effectively preventing these candidates from running and ignoring the message of Measure A. Evan Chaffee is a lifelong resident of San Juan Capistrano and is currently serving his first term on the city’s Planning Commission. He serves as campaign manager for Orange County Supervisor candidate Lisa Bartlett. Chaffee has worked in politics and at various levels of government over the last six years. He is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. To Horse Owners: A Mea Culpa Changing my tune: Why dating a woman with horses is a good thing

A

s a columnist, I’ve written more than 3,000 articles and e-newsletters since July 4, 1994, when my first piece appeared in print. Many of the articles are based upon comments and emails from readers, some poignant, some a bit off the wall.

Recently, I received an email from Gail that puzzled me. She wrote, “I think your comments regarding dating women with horses are quite unfair.

Those of us with horses enjoy male company as much as our horses.

Please don’t stereotype us.”

My initial reaction to Gail’s email was, “What is she talking about?” And then it dawned on me. About 15 years ago, I wrote an article titled, “Avoid Single Women Who Love Horses,” which Gail must have found in my archives.

It was a tongue-in-cheek article, written innocently. I never expected it would stir up the female horse owners in south Orange County. But oh my, did I get a lot of flak back then, particularly from women who have their horses boarded at stables in San Juan Capistrano. Some threatened to boycott future columns.

The column was about a single man who shared the experiences he had dating women who own horses. He admitted in the article that he liked seeing the women in their tight riding pants. That sentence alone elicited a bevy of negative comments.

He said: “I assisted a voluptuous lovely in delivering her horse to Winchester/Rancho, for a weekend ‘seminar’ in hunting and jumping. When Saturday was over, she asked me to spend the night in her motel room The Capistrano Dispatch February 14-27, 2014

because ‘the drive home was too long.’

Later, the wide brim of her hat knocked out one of my contact lenses while dancing at a cowboy bar.”

And then he said the plot thickened ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 back at the motel.

By Tom Blake He said, “Guess what she did when she emerged from the shower and sat on the bed wrapped in a towel? She telephoned her husband. She told him where she was, that she’d be spending the night, and yes, that I was still with her. My expectations for the evening changed in a hurry. I muttered to myself, ‘Why don’t you just tell hubby what my name is, what hotel room we’re in, etc.’”

He added, “It turns out the marriage was an arranged one for her residency status. Nevertheless, her horse took priority over any guy. I’ve been involved with two women who would rather spend time with and/or give more consideration to their horses than a prospective relationship.”

Based on his experiences, he recommended that men avoid dating women who own horses.

I reread the old column, and then responded to Gail: “I wrote that column 15 years ago. It amazes me what can be dredged up on the Internet. But Gail, I’ve mellowed. I’ve softened my position regarding dating women who own horses.

“Why? I own Tutor and Spunky’s Deli in Dana Point and recently hired a woman who owns horses. She’s lovely, and a very nice person. And while

there are days when she has to leave the deli early to go feed the horses, I know a hard-working, highly visible guy who works in a highly-visible San Juan Capistrano business who admires her and her dedication to her horses.

“So Gail, I’ve changed my tune.

Men should cherish women who own horses and feel fortunate if they can even get a date with one, although they may have to share her affections with a four-legged stud.”

The Premeditated Gardener Planning can go a long way for green thumbs

I

know what you’re thinking. Premeditated gardener? Is she murdering her plants?

Well, in all honesty, through the years I have murdered many of my plants through unintentional abuse with too much or too little water, by planting in the wrong location, too much sun or shade, poor soil conditions or by not adding amendments. The list is long as the day.

Worst of all is purchasing expensive, water-thirsty, acid-loving plants, like peonies, and planting them in the dry, compacted clay soil that is native to California—only to watch them wilt and die. To add insult to injury, my checkbook was unintentionally murdered by unnecessary and wasteful costs, due to my lack of planning.

To be a successful gardener, you must plan carefully and ask a lot of questions—you need to be premeditated. Think twice. By planning out your garden, you’re doing more for yourself and the environment than you think.

Start small and get a garden journal.

By journaling information, you’re setting yourself up for success by planning, calculating and creating your own farmers’ almanac. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. It goes Marianne Taylor for any goal you want to achieve. You have to write it down.

Find an area you’d like to change or improve in your yard. Sit out there and observe the lighting, the direction of the sun and how many hours of sun or shade there are. Knowing how much lighting a plant needs is critical.

The next culprit that will make or break your garden is soil. Take a handful of the soil and get it tested. The right soil with the right pH makes all the difference in having healthy plants that will thrive. Balanced soil resists plant disease and bad insects, thus doing away with the need for herbicides or pesticides.

Next up, water. Depending on the size of your yard, your garden will require varied irrigation features. My

friend Garrett Hume at Ewing Irrigation in San Clemente has all the latest irrigation products, along with “do-ityourself” classes.

Then there are the plants. What do you want to see? California natives and friendlies? Succulents? Edible landscaping? Dwarf fruit trees? Butterflies and hummingbirds? Or perhaps all of these combined?

Take a visit to your local garden center, and look for “California Friendly” in signs and tags. Also, check out the succulent and cactus sections.

Visit specialized nurseries like Tree of Life in San Juan. They’ve been around since 1976 and also have DIY classes every weekend on how to design, plant, irrigate and incorporate native plants that promote conservation and beneficial insects.

For the best selection of succulents and containers, Stevens Garden on Ortega Highway is a must, especially if you garden on a patio. Containers can be your best friend to grow anything.

The best luck I’ve had is tomatoes

grown from a container.

Don’t forget to visit a local park or botanical garden for inspiration. Meander through the 6.5-acre Los Rios Park in San Juan to get a glimpse of natives and perennials working together in harmony.

Being a premeditated gardener is neither evil nor difficult. You’re now a little more equipped to think before you plant. Success is in your hands.

Former Presidents Helped to Shape California Presidents Polk, Fillmore and Lincoln had a hand in the birth of the state and our city

s we get ready to celebrate President’s Day on Feb. 17, it is important for us to reflect on how many presidents have had a hand in shaping California but also San Jan Siegel Juan Capistrano.

James K. Polk was president during the Mexican-American War, which resulted in the United States acquiring California, along with other western territories. As he promised, Polk only served one term. He did not run for reelection. Zachary Taylor then became the 12th president of the United States.

Following the discovery of gold in California, President Taylor recognized the necessity of bringing California into the Union as quickly as possible. Taylor also favored admitting California as a free state.

There was strong feeling in Congress that territories acquired from the Mexican-American War should be slave states. The debate was between northThe Capistrano Dispatch February 14-27, 2014

erners and southerners more than it was between the two major political parties, the Whigs and the Democrats.

Early in 1850, Sen. Henry Clay, from Kentucky, proposed a compromise that would address all the newly acquired lands on an individual basis rather than as a group. President Taylor was against the compromise and the fear of a presidential veto kept the Congress from taking further action.

On July 9, 1850, however, President Taylor died from typhoid fever and Vice President Millard Fillmore became president.

Fillmore favored the compromise, and throughout August, individual congressional bills passed through the Senate. By early September, the entire package, which included the California Statehood Bill, was before the Senate.

On Sep. 9, 1850, the bill passed and California became the 31st state, entering the Union as a free state. The compromise worked and a Civil War was averted, at least for the time being.

For San Juan Capistrano, the most

important president was Abraham Lincoln.

Following the admission of California into the Union, there were years of confusion over property rights and land issues. Few of the land owners in California spoke English and had relied on Spanish and Mexican law.

Among the issues that had to be resolved was who owned title to the missions. John Forster had purchased the San Juan Capistrano Mission in 1844, when his brother-in-law was governor. His brother-in-law was Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of Alta California.

Rev. William F. Krekelberg at Mission San Juan Capistrano said Bishop Sadoc Alemany challenged the Forster claim of ownership of the Mission before the U.S. Land Commission: “The Bishop won the case on the basis that the sale of the mission by Pio Pico had been illegal under both Spanish and Mexican law. As we celebrate President’s Day, take a Moment In Time and visit the San Juan Capistrano Mission and remember all of the presidents that are a part of our heritage. If not for all of their support we might not have the Jewel of Missions today.

College Lacrosse Elite Set to Compete in SoCal

The inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout is coming to Southern California, and it is bringing some high-profile heavy hitters of the lacrosse world with it.

The event, which will take place on March 8 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, will feature matchups between four collegiate lacrosse programs, including an NCAA Division 1 tilt between No. 4 University of Denver and No. 5 Notre Dame.

A match between Men’s Collegiate Club Division 1 Loyola Marymount and University of California Santa Barbara will be the other featured

match.

The Pioneers will face the Fighting Irish at 1 p.m. The Gauchos and the Lions will square off at 3:30 p.m.

It’s not often that top collegiate lacrosse programs come to Southern California. Notre Dame is making its first regular season performance in the area since 2005. It will be just the second time Denver has played on Californian soil.

Former St. Margaret’s Episcopal standout Scott McGowan is a freshman on the Pioneers roster.

“It’s no secret West Coast lacrosse is booming,” event executive

Mix said in a press release. “Each year, more and more players from California are appearing on the rosters of traditional college lacrosse powerhouses. The ultimate goal of the Shootout is to promote the high quality of lacrosse being played in California … while exposing these developing players and programs to the best collegiate programs in the game.”

Signing Day Student Athletes Sign the Dotted Line

eb. 5 marked the first day for select high school student-athletes to sign their National Letters of Intent, indicating which colleges they will attend and play for next fall.

For all the signees, the day served as a launching point for their athletic careers, as they take their talents to the next level of competition.

On Feb. 5, Capistrano Valley Christian senior Sam Sukut signed a National Letter of Intent to play football for the University of San Diego next fall.

Sukut, a running back for the Eagles, led the team in carries (108), rushing yards (973) and touchdowns (18) in 2013. Sukut averaged 97 yards per game and just over nine yards per carry as a senior. CD www.thecapistranodispatch.com

rguably the most high profile local student-athlete to sign his or her letter of intent last week was JSerra Catholic football player Dante Pettis.

Pettis, a speedy 6-1 receiver who has the ability to play in the defensive backfield, signed on to play football for the University of Washington. He verbally committed to the Huskies on Jan. 23, after taking his official visit to Seattle the prior weekend.

Pettis is rated as a 3-star prospect (out of five) and the 87th-ranked wide receiver in the country, according to the national high school football recruiting service, Scout.com.

We had a chance to talk with Scout. com’s National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins about Pettis, his recruitment and how he projects at the next level.

THE CAPISTRANO DISPATCH: Based on your observations, what kind of skills does Dante bring to Washington?

GB: Physically, I think he’s got a lot of tools. He’s got prototype size and he’s a good receiver. He’s about 6-1 with a good enough frame that I think he can add some good weight without losing a lot of speed.

He’s a natural pass catcher. Some guys can run a 4.3/40-yard-dash, but they struggle to catch it. Dante’s a smooth route runner and can explode after the catch.

high school. What does he bring to the table on defense? Do you think he could play defense in college?

GB: Defensively, he’s tough. He’ll come up and hit you.

I love those versatile players that can play two to three different spots, and Dante can play corner and safety, also.

He’s a good all-around football player.

I think he definitely could go in any of those spots. We’ll usually rate guys with where they’re being recruited. I think Dante can be equally good on defense.

CD: Dante was initially rated as a 2-star prospect at safety. What did you see in him during the season that made his rating and ranking climb?

GB: He started off low because we hadn’t seen him. He’s a track guy, so we didn’t get to see him that much in the spring. He didn’t do a lot of the camps that other guys do, but I did see him at the Edison 7-on-7 passing tournament.

After we watched more film and after we finally got a chance to see him, we realized he could really play.

CD: Dante will be playing for head coach Chris Petersen, who took the job at Washington in December after a great run at Boise State. Pettis’ cousin Austin (now with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams) played for Petersen at Boise State and is the career-leader in touchdown receptions for the program. How much of a factor did that connection play in Dante’s recruitment?

GB: Dante was pretty set to go to Boise State because of that connection.

Austin was talking to him a lot.

When the staff went to Washington, we had a really good idea he would end up there. He was supposed to visit Boise (after his visit to Washington), but I think he felt really good with the staff.

CD: What kind of impact do you think Pettis will have at Washington?

GB: He’ll fit in well. Washington has some good young guys already, so Dante doesn’t have to come in right away and be an impact guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if he redshirts, but they play a lot of receivers. I think down the road he’ll be an impact guy.

CD: JSerra Catholic produced a pretty good receiver a few years back in Jonavaughn Williams, who’s now at UNLV. Is Pettis the biggest recruit to come out of the school? What do you think about JSerra Catholic?

GB: I think so. He’s the most high profile guy and probably the best player to come out.

I think Jim (Hartigan) has done a great job. I thought they should’ve gotten the at-large (playoff bid) over Crespi (Carmelite of Encino). The Trinity League is the best league in the state and arguably the toughest in the country. I think it’s a really good program on the rise. CD
