Five things San Juan should know this week Downtown Hotel Project Delayed by Planning Miscues THE LATEST: An apparent oversight in the planning process has delayed a proposal to build a 136-room hotel and 33 townhomes in the heart of downtown.

The City Council was scheduled to vote on Urban Village’s $43 million San Juan Hotel & Villas project Thursday, June 19, but in the week prior, city staff discovered the General Plan had not been rezoned to comply with the city’s Historic Town Center Master Plan, which was approved in 2012 to manage growth and encourage pedestrian travel in downtown.

Charlie View, the city’s development services director, and City Attorney Hans Van Ligten said the city could not legally move forward and allow the townhomes unless the two plans were harmonized.

The council voted 3-1 to begin a General Plan Amendment, with Councilman John Taylor abstaining because of his home’s proximity to the area.

The project is further complicated because city staff discovered that the proposed townhomes are detached, separated by a 4-inch space, and by definition, singlefamily homes, which are not allowed in the project site. The council voted 4-0 to allow homes in the area.

In an email sent to City Manager Karen Brust, Joshua Host, principal of Urban Village, said his plans were made clear from the beginning and provided two documents, from as early as May 2013, detailing the project.

WHAT’S NEXT: The council will now consider the project on Aug. 5.

After the meeting, Brust said View will look into why the General Plan was not updated two years ago. She said staff turnover since the master plan was approved may have contributed to the problem.

Host said the delayed vote threatens his project and called the situation “unjust.”

Further, the land is owned by movie producer Steve Oedekerk, who decided not to extend the purchase agreement for the land because he had become frustrated by the city, according to Host.

Last August, the city’s current rate structure was declared illegal by an Orange County Superior Court judge in a lawsuit brought against the city in 2012 by the Capistrano Taxpayers Association, a local advocacy group. The city appealed the ruling and continued to charge customers based on the contested model.

Water Rate Increased 5 Percent for Next 5 Years THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano residents and business owners will see a 5 percent increase in their water bills each of the next five years.

The City Council on Tuesday, June 17 voted 3-2 to approve the increases, despite protests from a group of residents.

Councilmen Roy Byrnes and Derek Reeve, who have long been critical of the city’s groundwater recovery plant, voted in opposition.

The new four-tiered rate structure was developed over several months and in meetings with the council, Utilities Commission and the city’s rate consultant, Raftelis Financial.

Neither Byrnes nor Reeve participated in a rate survey by Raftelis to determine the scope and aim of the study. Reeve issued a “call to action” last month, asking residents to send in written protests against the increases. Had the city received protests from half plus one of its ratepayers, the council would not have been allowed to raise rates, Reeve argued.

Before the council’s vote, protest forms were counted under the supervision of two representatives from the League of Women Voters, who were asked by the city to ensure it was done properly. The city only received 349 letters, well short of the 5,666 needed.

WHAT’S NEXT: The increases go into effect July 1. Although around 61 percent of the city’s ratepayers will see an increase of up to $5, customers will be allowed to use more water at the lowest tier, and those in the highest two tiers will also be charged far less than under the previous model.

About 20 percent of the city’s ratepayers will see no impact and 9 percent will see a $5 to $10 increase, according to the city.

CUSD Names New Superintendent THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District has its new superintendent.

Kirsten Vital, superintendent of the Alameda Unified School District in Northern California, will replace Joseph Farley, who is retiring at the end of June. According to a district press release, the board made the selection at a closed-door meeting Saturday, June 14.

John Alpay, board president, said in the release he believed the district found the right successor.

“We wanted to ensure that we had the right person for this very important role

during this critical time in our district,” Alpay said. “The board … is certain that Kirsten Vital is the right leader who will take our district to new heights of student achievement.”

The Alameda district is much smaller than CUSD, with 10 elementary schools, two middle schools and four high schools and 10,000 students. CUSD has 53,000 students at 55 campuses in San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and other areas throughout southern Orange County.

Farley, who joined the district in 2010, announced his retirement last December.

After which, the district undertook a national search but replaced search firms last month to focus on California candidates.

During his tenure, Farley is credited with stabilizing the district following the half-decade of turmoil that preceded his hiring in 2010. Upon hire, Farley said he wanted to stay with CUSD for four years in order to put the district back on good footing for its next superintendent WHAT’S NEXT: On Wednesday, the board unanimously approved Vital’s contract, 5-0, with Trustees Ellen Addonizio and Anna Bryson absent. Her contract runs through 2018 and costs $305,000 per year with no automatic increases. Vital will receive a one-time allocation of $15,000 for relocation expenses and is responsible to pay into her retirement fund.

Grand Jury Indicts San Juan Capistrano Man Accused of Murdering His Parents

their deaths. Their bodies were discovered in their multimillion dollar home on Peppertree Bend just before 2 a.m.

Sachs is also accused of shooting his 8-year-old brother, who is now paralyzed.

His two teenage sisters were also inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Sachs is accused of shooting at one of his sisters but missing.

THE LATEST: A 20-year-old San Juan Capistrano man accused of killing his parents and attempting to murder his younger siblings was indicted by a grand jury June 16.

Ashton Colby Sachs, 20, was indicted by the Orange County Grand Jury on two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The indictment supersedes the original charges filed by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

If convicted, Sachs faces a minimum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole and is eligible for the death penalty, according to the DA’s Office.

Sachs is accused of traveling from Seattle, where he was a student at North Seattle College, to San Juan Capistrano and killing his parents, Bradford Hans and Andra Resa Sachs, while they slept on Sunday, Feb. 9. The couple divorced in 2000 but was living together at the time of

Susan Holliday, the district’s executive director of technology and information services, said the program, which provided Chromebooks, a personal computer running a Google operating system, had received favorable reviews from teachers and students.

She reported that teachers said they were able to be more creative in their lesson planning. Teachers also reported the technology allowed students to work together collaboratively, leading some students to take on more of leadership roles.

WHAT’S NEXT: Holliday said there was a need for more technology in schools but that the district was unable to supply all students with Chromebooks.

Chamber Unveils New Website A new website aims to provide tourists with a one-stop destination to learn all about the goings-on in San Juan Capistrano.

The Chamber of Commerce unveiled its new website, www.visitsjc.com, to the City Council on Monday, June 23. The site is “just about all the fun things going on in town,” said chamber CEO Mark Bodenhamer.

The site is already optimized to view on mobile devices, and the chamber’s next movie will be to generate revenue and advertise the site.

CUSD Bids Farewell to Superintendent Farley Retiring Capistrano Unified School District Superintendent Joseph Farley attended his last graduation at Dana Hills High School on Tuesday. The next evening, he presided over his final board meeting and trustees gave a warm sendoff to the man they have called their leader the past four years.

Speakers praised Farley for steering the district through troubling times, including its worst fiscal crisis. They applauded his openness and willingness to speak with teachers, parents and staff during his four years at the helm.

Farley received framed proclamations of thanks from each of the cities in Capistrano Unified, as well as recognition from local elected officials. Trustees also pitched in to buy a new custom watch, inscribed with Farley’s name and the Capistrano Unified seal.

“I count you as a friend. You’ve been a great mentor. I will always remember those phone calls where you started, ‘John, this is where I can pretend to be your father,’” said Board President John Alpay. “For the record, I did listen to it.

Thank you very much for everything you’ve done. You’ve done a great job. I didn’t hire you here. I wish I did so I could take credit for everything you’ve done.”

Trustee Jim Reardon, who was elected in 2012, also thanked Farley.

“I feel that our relationship has been cut a little short. I think we were just getting on our stride there,” Reardon said. “Thank you for your service to the district and best of luck on your future endeavors.”

Farley, who will take on a part-time job with a national consulting firm tasked to find school officials, reciprocated the wellwishes with trustees and district staff.

“When I reflect back on the body of work, I’m really proud of the impact on kids, especially the ones that sometimes fall through the cracks of our systems,” Farley said. “Am I completely ready for the watershed moment of retirement from this wonderful work? Probably not. But I’m leaving it with an enormous sense of gratitude and appreciation.”

Orange County’s long-discussed project to renovate the Dana Point Harbor moved closer to breaking ground June 17 as the Dana Point City Council unanimously denied an appeal from recreational boaters.

The estimated $140 million project will see the demolition of 13 commercial structures and the construction of seven new. Plans also include a 35,000-square-foot park and a two-level parking structure.

Planning Commissioners approved a project permit May 12 in a 4-to-1 vote. An appeal quickly followed. Those favoring the project, including Harbor business owners, said the project had been vetted over the last 17 years through numerous community meetings and concessions had already been made. For others, mainly local boaters, concerns remained regarding parking the proposed construction of a $30 million boat-storage facility. Council members told those in opposition their concerns would be better addressed by the California Coastal Commission.

Open Space, Trails and Equestrian Commission Meeting

The San Clemente City Council affirmed its budget decisions of its previous meeting on Tuesday, June 17, keeping a fourth motorcycle officer for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Mayor Tim Brown, who was not present at the council’s previous meeting June 5, voiced opposition to the fourth motorcycle officer, Brown said he heard from a number of residents, particularly in Talega, who felt that the city’s current motorcycle officers seemed to focus on writing tickets, rather than general protection. He voiced support for having three motor positions with an additional deputy. Chief of Police Services David Moodie said he preferred keeping the additional motorcycle officer, if for nothing else than additional flexibility. Moodie said he could switch a motorcycle officer into a car but could not do so the other way. The council voted 3-2 for the fourth motorcycle officer.

Plagued by a Parking Problem?

A

s I’ve said before, San Juan Capistrano’s downtown is better now than in the 20 years I’ve been in

town.

Some of it is through good government, such as the loan to the Regency to get our downtown movie theater open again.

Some of it is despite government, such as Eric Altman’s yearslong effort to rebuild the Vaquero West building across from the theater. Some of it is through vision, such as the Mission’s gift store. Much of it is through perseverance and hard work, such as Five Vines Wine Bar and Mission Grill.

Those “newcomers” join downtown staples such as Cedar Creek, Ciao Pasta, L’Hriondelle, Sarducci’s Sundried Tomato, Swallows Inn, The Vintage, Whim, even the Antique Barn and Camino Real Playhouse. Fiano’s, a new version of Vito’s, has also come on strong in the last year, as has Guapa’s Tapas.

So all is good in the downtown, right?

Well, not to some. In a Goldilocks Syndrome, some who worried about too many empty parking spots because of empty storefronts now have the opposite concern—that we don’t have enough parking.

Parking hawks complain plans for a Hilton hotel and 33 villas downtown don’t contain enough parking—but the proposal uses the same standard approved for the now-dead Plaza Banderas Hotel plan next to the Mission and the Marriott Suites at the south end of town. The retail center proposed east of the Mission (where the hotel was approved) has more parking than required by the city. (Disclosure: I’m working with both projects. They’d be within walking distance of my home and great additions to the town.)

Is there too little parking? We went downtown on a recent Saturday and had to hunt around a bit until we found a spot on the top floor of the structure. It was

Parking was discussed at a recent daylong City Council retreat—where one councilman said businesses have told him they’re losing customers because of parking—and at a recent City Council budget session. Some help is on the way, as the city has money budgeted next year to rework and restripe the lot in front of Sarducci’s, which could add as many as 20 percent more spaces. Staff will suggest other fixes.

If you Google “San Juan Capistrano” and “parking study,” you’ll see this is something that’s been discussed and fretted over for years. It was supposed to be “solved” with the implementation of the Historic Downtown Master Plan, with the construction of a parking structure where the playhouse sits today. That plan took a probably fatal shot, however, when the state eliminated redevelopment agencies.

The playhouse and adjoining parking lot (the Texaco lot for you old-timers), were owned by the city’s redevelopment agency.

That land is now likely facing sale to the highest bidder.

No need to panic, though: according to the downtown master plan, all of the anticipated parking the plan would bring in would have only brought an additional 58 spots to our downtown. Just 58. Right now, the plan says, we have 3,419 nonresidential parking spaces downtown, and the average occupancy rate (when the 2010 plan was prepared) is 60 percent.

The key? Not necessarily adding more parking, but better managing what we have. Coordinating special events so a Mission event or wedding doesn’t fill spots that could go to restaurant diners.

An agreement with the owners of the Ross center to allow nighttime parking there, or the owners at F&M Bank and the neighboring Plaza de Prosperidad for peak parking, along with San Juan Elementary School, too. For the record, experts told the council earlier this month that shuttles don’t really work, except for special events.

I like the idea of parking meters along Camino Capistrano, too. Metered parking with a two-hour maximum would ensure that shoppers can always find a space in front of their favorite store or that a spot is open for a quick bite at one of our great restaurant.

When people complain about parking, I always think of Laguna Beach. Tough to get into with traffic and crowded streets and parking can be a nightmare. But when we wanted to share an ocean view, sunset and great meal the other night, we were at Las Brisas. Parking might keep folks from a marginal area, but when there’s places you want to be, you’ll find a way to be there.

Each effort offered good ideas but there wasn’t a conclusion. The topic could be better addressed by a workshop with the consultants and stakeholders, who are experts in the physics of the basin rather than the politics.

The important point that should be taken is that if there is a loss of water from the Metropolitan Water District and there is still groundwater in San Juan Capistrano, there may be a need to share the precious resource. It is not clear if

water could be distributed to the neighboring agencies.

Mr. Kramer is correct in saying that the San Juan Basin Authority is an agency without a staff. However, they share technical staff from the four member agencies.

The SJBA could be configured to have a hydrogeologist and technical staff to manage the basin. Currently, this work is contracted out.

It is very important that the governance organization be dedicated to maximizing the production of the basin in the most efficient way and to provide a safe yield of water to the residents of south Orange County.

New Water Rates Will Set the City on an Upward Path In response to fellow councilmen, the water rate study and rates are fiscally sound

C

ouncilmen Roy Byrnes and Derek Reeve opposed implementing our new water and sewer rates in The Capistrano Dispatch for reasons that make no sense unless it is political posturing.

It is an election year after all. Still, both voted to conduct a professional rate study, which cost the city over $100,000.

Councilman Reeve wrote that he would never vote for a rate increase. He has a political slogan that states: “I have never raised fees or taxes while in office nor will I.” He believes in political slogans. I believe in governing. Councilman Reeve would not even vote for the new sewer rates even though they do not increase for the next four years and then only slightly in year five. It is ludicrous to look at the hard facts and still be governed by a simplistic political statement.

Councilman Byrnes refuses to vote for a rate increase until a serious evaluation of all costs is conducted. Contrary to Councilman Byrnes’ belief, we have been working on reducing costs since I was elected to the City Council.

In 2011, we had an audit of the water and sewer utilities done by Ralph Andersen and Associates at a cost of $45,000.

Major recommendations have been implemented with one significant exception: the audit recommended refinancing part of the debt, but we were prevented from doing that because our water rates were being contested.

With new rates in place, we may now be able to refinance some of the debt, which will significantly reduce the cost of our utilities. We have also hired an exceptional utilities director, Keith Van Der Maaten, who has been working to cut costs on a continuous basis.

Councilmen Byrnes and Reeve believe that we can lower our rates by only taking water from the Metropolitan Water District. But MWD has historically raised rates about 7 percent per year. Even if we

made the Groundwater Recovery Plant debt disappear, your rates for water would logically go up 7 percent per year.

We are working hard to return our utility funds to a healthy state

By Larry Kramer while at the same time working to minimize the impact on the residents. We approved a rate structure that finances only essential capital improvements. We are planning to build up our reserves slowly to a healthy balance over 10 years. Both of these decisions were made to minimize the impact on your utility rates while still being fiscally responsible.

At a recent public water forum, I had the city calculate the changes in my utility bill over the next five years. In year one, it will go up less than $1 per month. Over the five-year period, the average rate of increase is less than 4 percent per year.

The San Juan Capistrano Utilities Commission unanimously recommended this new rate structure. Overall our new rate structure is an excellent plan to carry out our fiduciary responsibilities to both the city and its residents.

In this Oregon-based film, a trio of young, radical and well meaning environmentalists aim to make a difference for the planet. Emotionally numb Josh (Eisenberg) and determined optimist Dena (Fanning) drive across state to meet up with Josh’s grungy friend Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard) to plan a secret bombing of a hydroelectric dam, a decision with consequences and more dangers than they could predict.

Setting the Standard: The Class of 2014 S

an Juan Hills High School has only been around for seven years, but with each graduating class, there have been plenty of breakthroughs and “firsts.”

And while the school continues its upward swing, academically and athletically, the class of 2014 has set a high bar for future Stallions and proudly proclaimed they were second to none.

On Tuesday, June 24, 457 graduates, along with their families and friends, gathered at Stallion Stadium, nicknamed “The Badlands,” to celebrate four years of academic achievement, success on the sports field and contributions to the community.

The class of 2014 may very well be the last of the “firsts.”

Previous commencement ceremonies were held at the Bren Center at UC Irvine, but the class of 2014 became the first class to graduate on their home turf. It was on that

turf, too, that the Stallions football team became the first in school history to win a Sea View League title.

These pioneering Stallions were the first to enter high school as part of a full campus—freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors—and as Capistrano Unified School District Trustee Jim Reardon noted, they are the first, among thousands of high school graduates, to be educated entirely in the 21st century.

Student speakers focused less on the days ahead but used the occasion to memorialize their accomplishments and celebrate each other—they reminded the crowd that they were the first and only three-time winners of the school’s annual “Clash of the Classes.”

“We’re a united class. Everything we did, we did together,” said senior class president Parker Smith. “We were able to make our own traditions. We were able to make history

at our school. We were truly a family and that’s what I’m going to miss most.”

But what makes the class of 2014 truly unique, was their character, said Principal Tom Ressler.

“While we should all celebrate these accomplishments, we must always also remember that the true mark of this day is not whether you had the highest or lowest GPA, it’s not whether you won or lost the game,” Ressler said. “The true mark of this day is that each one of us have discovered that being a good and caring person is what will live on and what will give lasting meaning to anything and everything we do in the future. Scholar of Scholar’s speech praises classmates’ integrity

G

ood evening, Deputy Superintendent Clark Hampton, Trustee Jim Reardon, San Juan Hills administrators, staff, parents and the class of 2014.

Society has created for us a very clear idea of what makes us matter and so have our peers. We’ve been taught to seek obvious and loud success. You know, Seth Villanueva wanted to get into an Ivy League, Matt Mucerino wants to succeed in sports and have the nicest muscles of anyone here, Jameson Johnson wants to rule the world, which I hope happens because she’d be great at it, and I wanted to be Scholar of Scholars because wearing a fancy gold robe and standing on a fancy pedestal makes me matter.

These successes are valuable and certainly worth celebrating, but I list them with a slight air of bitterness because they are not the kinds of success that I think matter most.

Part of why I feel this way stems from something I read a few years ago. It goes like this: “The growing good of the world is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs.” According to George Eliot, the world is a good world because of people who will live and die unnoticed. So perhaps we don’t need to be as well-known as Matt Mucerino or Jameson Johnson in order to be influential.

I’d like to translate some of what I’ve said now so all of us can understand. En Español, el mundo es un mundo bueno debido a gente que no recibe crédito por sus acciones. Hay tanta gente en nuestra clase con éxitos perceptibles y obvios, pero

esto no es lo que importa. Maestros me han dicho que somos una clase única, diferente. Somos una clase fuerte académicamente pero también simpática, receptiva, y sin prejuicios extremos. Y, en mi opinión, debemos ser tan orgulloso de esto.

From my perspective, we’re a pretty unique class.

We’re not a clique-y class. We’re a class that’s united enough to have won Clash of the Classes three years in a row.

We’re also not a class driven by popularity or appearance consciousness. You made me your prom queen. I’ve never been to a high school party, and I socialize about once a month, but I have a freaking tiara in my room. And, I should add, you elected one of the shyest prom kings in history.

We’re also a dedicated class. I’d like to point out, Mr. Ressler, we didn’t ditch.

But above all of this, we seem to be a class that, for the most part, is not plagued by judgment or bullying, and I hope this has been your experience too. We’re a kind class. So yes, many of us have high GPAs, many of us were accepted into nice colleges, many of us have astonishing leadership skills, athletic skills, unique skills, but I want to challenge all of you to consider other qualities to be what make our class matter. Shift your priorities and value those who live a hidden life, those without obvious successes, those who made our class what it is, those who are simply kind.

One person who I’d like you to notice now is James Gibson. He is ranked second in this class, but I don’t think I’ve encountered anyone as humble as he is, as considerate as he is to his peers and to his younger siblings. His successes aren’t so obvious but the way his character has influenced me and influenced others is profound.

Teachers like Mr. Lynde and Mr. Baker have said they admire all of you not only for being especially academic but just for being good and kind. Admire yourselves for that too.

And carry this sense of camaraderie, this kindness, to wherever you’re going next. I admire you and I admire us and I’m confident that the world’s goodness will increase just a little bit when we enter it today. www.thecapistranodispatch.com

A Senior Dating Dilemma Walking away from someone you love

ative American educator Jacque Nuñez will serve as cultural ambassador for the city of San Juan Capistrano during the 2014 North American Indigenous Games in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The City Council voted unanimously to make Nuñez its ambassador on Tuesday, June 17.

Nuñez is a member of the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation, the native inhabitants of the Capistrano Valley. Through her educational program, Journeys to the Past, Nuñez has taught students about California Indian culture in classrooms and camps.

Founded in 1992, the Indigenous Games aim to promote unity among native people of North America through athletic and cultural events. Nuñez was selected to conduct a workshop at the games, becoming the first representative from a California tribe to do so.

oving someone who doesn’t love you can be “an emotional roller coaster,” said Judy (not her real name), who asked for my opinion on her situation.

Judy, 63, wrote, “I have been seeing a widower, age 70, for two years. I love him dearly. From the start, he has told me he will never marry again or live with anyone.

I thought his feelings would change as time went on. But this will never happen.

“I don’t want to end the relationship. I care too much to walk away, but I would love to have more. He always tells me that I deserve more, that he has nothing to offer me. I have not met his grown children.

He told me it’s to protect me in the event they were not receptive of me.

“My focus is on his happiness. But I need him to show me I am important in his life and that he is proud of me. If I walk away, I am afraid I will lose him.”

In the world of senior dating, Judy’s situation is not uncommon. Women share similar stories often. Advising them is difficult because each situation is different.

I responded to Judy: “You felt you could change him. That’s a mistake people often make. We can’t change people, they have to change themselves.

“You say you care too much to walk away. But if you don’t walk, you will be writing me a similar email in the future sometime. Something has to change on your end. Give him credit; he has been honest with you. You know how he feels.

But, you hanging on. That’s your choice.

“In two years, you haven’t met his grown children. That’s sad and a red flag.

He’s doing that to protect you? No, he’s doing that to protect himself. You state that your focus is on his happiness. Your focus needs to be on making yourself happy instead.

“Walking away from an unfulfilling

relationship is one of the most difficult things.

However, staying in one can be stressful and damaging to one’s health.

“Before walking away entirely, perhaps you should take an interim step. Take a break from ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 seeing him.”

By Tom Blake My friend Ken, in commenting about Judy’s dilemma, said, “You would be very surprised how people will fight for what they want when they believe they will lose something.”

I said to Judy, “If you take action, be prepared to be lonely and sad. You will miss him and possibly lose him, but you don’t have him. Perhaps someone else will come along who will fulfill your needs, and you will look back, knowing you did the right thing.”

That happened to Sue, who exited a wrong relationship but later found love.

Sue said, “Walking away was hard. I cried for weeks. If your heart is too full of what can’t be, there is no room for what will be.

It’s truly not better to be with someone that doesn’t return the love. I’ve never been the queen in someone’s life till now ... it’s so much better than crumbs.”

One thing is certain for Judy: She has to make the decision to change her life and stick to it. Other seniors have done it and so can she.

fter claiming the tournament hardware at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional IV Championships on June 22 in New Mexico, the So Cal Blues Baker Girls U12 soccer team is now one step closer to competing for a national title.

icardo’s Place in San Juan Capistrano was supposed to be closed Monday morning, but following a special request, owner Ricardo Beas and his brother, Alex, decided to make an exception.

Alex received a call from someone representing a private party of 60 people who wanted to come in to the popular downtown restaurant and watch the much anticipated 2014 FIFA World Cup game between Mexico and Croatia. A favorable score line for the Mexican squad meant that El Tri would head into the final knockout round of 16. Alex Beas could not turn down the request of the fans, who showed up and enjoyed the game.

The So Cal Blues team easily won Pool A at the regionals, going 3-0 and outscoring their opponents by a combined 13-1 margin. In the tournament finals, the So Cal Blues defeated Washington Premier FC in penalty kicks to punch their ticket to nationals. CD played in Argentina, Alex Beas, who had since moved to Southern California, and his friends would make the trip up to the Los Angeles Sports Arena to catch all the action on closed circuit television.

Now, in the middle of the 2014 version of arguably the world’s most popular sporting event, Alex Beas sees a wide range of customers, and soccer fans, come through the doors at Ricardo’s Place, eagerly waiting to watch the day’s games.

The passion of the fans hasn’t changed over the years. For Alex Beas, what has changed the most is the availability of information.

Ricardo’s Place is among many restaurants in south Orange County that have taken to social media in order to broadcast to the hungry hordes of soccer fans that they are indeed open early for the games.

Places like OC Tavern in San Clemente have used a similar approach, incorporating Facebook posts and Instagram photos into their marketing, letting people know who is playing and when the game starts.

Alex Beas also credits the rise of television networks like ESPN with providing nonstop information to the fans, making them more interested and knowledgeable in the process.

he Saddleback Valley Christian boys and girls volleyball teams spent the 2014 season proving they are one of the more successful programs in Orange County, and for their championship efforts, both teams were recognized by the San Juan Capistrano City Council Tuesday night.

“It’s this type of talent, sportsmanship and spirit that makes a great athletic program and few have the program that Saddleback Valley Christian School has,” Mayor Sam Allevato said. “I’m certainly proud of the coaching staff, as is the City Council, of both the boys and girls volleyball teams and tip my hat to each and every player.”

The boys team capped off yet another season of dominance with their second consecutive CIF-SS Division 5 Championship and an appearance in the state playoffs.

Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Van Rensselaer, the Warriors won the San Joaquin League title with relative ease and finished the season with an overall record of 31-4-1.

The team was led by a mix of underclassmen and returning veterans.

“The young people, they notice now.

They’re curious (about the game). It’s a new generation that has more knowledge,” Alex Beas said. “Someone can come in and ask who is playing. I say ‘England’ and they know Wayne Rooney.”

Alex Beas said that while they like to maintain their family-friendly atmosphere, rather than attract the rowdy bar scene, the two United States games have drawn a healthy number of people to Ricardo’s Place.

“It’s meant a lot to have the support of everybody in San Juan and that they’ve had our backs,” Karlsen said.

The girls volleyball team, led by firstyear head coach Carmen Stratton, went 32-5 en route to capturing the CIF-SS Division 4AA championship. The Warriors entered the CIF State Division IV Championships as the No. 2 overall seed and won two matches before losing to eventual champion Parker, 3-1, in the semifinals.

Junior Heidi Dyer was named player of the year and has signed a full scholarship to play at Pepperdine University. CD Those watching the Americans battle the Portuguese to a 2-2 draw on June 22 in San Juan Capistrano weren’t the only ones glued to the television screen. The game drew a total of 24.7 million viewers, making it the most viewed soccer game in American television history. The game reached more viewers than the NBA Finals or the World Series, according to the New York Times.

At the OC Tavern on June 16, when the U.S. played Ghana, there were more than 150 red, white and blue-clad supporters in attendance. The Americans were set for their final group game against Germany on June 26. If the U.S. secured a win or a draw, they would advance to the tournament’s Round of 16. Results were not available at press time.

With an opening 1-0 win over Cameroon, a convincing 3-1 win over Croatia and an exhilarating 0-0 draw with tournament favorite and host country Brazil, Mexico will live to play another day. They are set to square off against the high-scoring Netherlands on Sunday, June 29 at 9 a.m.
