“It appears that there were no other vehicles involved in that crash,” Kim said.

Ward then walked westbound on Ortega Highway for unknown reasons. Kim said there are currently no eyewitnesses and no calls were made to authorities at that point. He added that the conditions were foggy, with no street lights in that area.

Ward was then struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Ortega Highway.

Kim said based on physical evidence and vehicle debris at the scene, the car was likely a 2010, 2011 or 2012 white Subaru Legacy, Impreza or Outback.

Five things San Juan should know this week City Council Approves Over $4 Million in Water Refunds THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved a refund/credit process on June 16 for tier 2, 3, and 4 water customers who paid the city’s previous tiered water rates, which have since been ruled illegal by the 4th District Court of Appeals.

Last month, the city settled the lawsuit questioning the validity of the previous rates filed by the Capistrano Taxpayers Association.

The council approved the refund/credit process by a 3-2 vote, with Mayor Pro Tem Pam Patterson and Councilman Sam Allevato dissenting. Top tier customers who paid water bills between Aug. 28, 2013 and June 30, 2014 will need to apply for either a refund or credit from the city.

WHAT’S NEXT: Assuming that 100 percent of the water customers who overpaid complete and return a claim form, the refund/ credit, in addition to the CTA settlement, is expected to have a fiscal impact to the city’s Water Enterprise Fund of approximately $4.1 million. City staff is recommending that the $4.1 million be funded by an inter-fund loan from the Sewer Enterprise Fund to the Water Enterprise Fund. The proposed loan agreement will come back before the City Council.

Foothill Ranch Man Victim of Hit-and-Run on Ortega Highway

Trolley Kicks Off with Success, New Tracker

THE LATEST: The body of 20-year-old Elijah Ward of Foothill Ranch was discovered in the early morning of June 19 on Ortega Highway, just five miles east of Interstate 5 near Antonio Parkway. Ward was the victim of a solo vehicle crash and a subsequent hit-and-run collision, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

Authorities said Ward likely crashed his car early Friday morning, escaped the overturned vehicle, and proceeded to walk westbound on Ortega Highway before being fatally hit.

CHP Officer Pete Kim said a citizen caller reported the body surrounded by vehicle debris to CHP around 4:26 a.m.

Friday morning, and a SigAlert was issued at 5:45 a.m. informing drivers of an Ortega Highway closure from the entrance at Gateway Place, near the Sendero Gateway Apartment Homes, to the Orange County/Riverside county line. The stretch of road remained closed Friday morning before reopening in both directions in the afternoon.

Steve Concialdi said OCFA received a call about the body at 4:24 a.m. Paramedics hooked Ward up to a cardiac monitor and pronounced him dead at the scene, around 4:30 a.m.

“He was already deceased,” Concialdi said.

CHP officials said Ward was traveling eastbound on Ortega Highway when he crashed his vehicle at an unknown time— possibly around 4 a.m. while it was still dark out.

Kim said it is still unknown as to why Ward lost control of his car, although he suspects it has something to do with the steep embankments along Ortega. The car

THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano’s free summer weekend trolley service kicked off June 12 with an official ribbon cutting on the corner of Ortega Highway and El Camino Real. Dignitaries and residents gathered to celebrate the trolley, which city officials hope will alleviate parking and traffic issues downtown while increasing mobility to the city’s main hubs of activity.

Former councilwoman Laura Freese, now a member of the Heritage Tourism Association, informed the City Council earlier this month that the trolley had an average of 13 riders per hour during its opening weekend June 12-14, coming in above the initial goal of 10 riders per hour.

Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson has said that consistently achieving 10 riders per hour is vital to bringing in future Orange County Transportation Authority funding, as well as expanding the service as a tricity trolley in the future.

WHAT’S NEXT: The trolley runs through Sept. 5, with the exception of June 30 through July 5. The city has said it will contract for shuttle services for the July 4 weekend. With a frequency of every 45 minutes, the trolley is scheduled Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with additional rides during the free San Juan Summer Nites Concert Series at the Historic Town Center Park.

Future Summer Nites concerts run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and include Family Style on July 15, Pickelback Shine on Aug. 19 and BUB Band on Sept. 16. Each event includes dancing, food, beer and wine, a local business expo and free activities for kids.

Upcoming Full I-5/Ortega Highway Bridge Closure THE LATEST: Full closures of Interstate 5 in San Juan Capistrano and the Ortega Highway bridge are scheduled for Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27. Both closures will take place from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists will be detoured.

The closures are necessary to allow crews to safely begin the process of removing falsework on the new Ortega Highway bridge, according to Orange County Transportation Authority officials.

Regularly scheduled nighttime closures from Sunday, June 21 to Saturday, June 27 include the Ortega Highway southbound I-5 off ramp Sunday to Thursday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Southbound I-5 lane reductions between Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano will take place Sunday to Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and lane reductions going westbound on Ortega Highway from Rancho Viejo Road to Del Obispo Street are set for Sunday to Thursday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Orange County Approves $5.8 Billion Budget THE LATEST: The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved the $5.8 billion budget for the coming fiscal year on June 23, which comes with $723 million in general purpose revenue, of which $687 million is available for discretionary programs.

WHAT’S NEXT: A portion of the funding is slated to be used for internal investigations, the release stated; however, the supervisors may consider a different model for oversight functions in the next 30 days.

Fiesta Association Holds Parade Theme Contest The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association is looking for ideas for the theme of next year’s Swallows Day Parade.

The association is holding a contest to choose a theme for the 2016 Swallows Day Parade. Last year’s theme was “Hitch Your Wagon to a Star.”

Life is a Cabernet Discovering and enjoying good wine is a lifelong pursuit.

Luckily we have some great help right here in town.

T

here’s no denying the pleasure of wine.

It can make almost any meal an occasion, give every table a little elegance and provide every conversation an added sense of satisfaction.

Although I’m a rank amateur as wine enthusiast’s go, I learned a bit about the topic while living in France. Miki Dora, one of surfing’s early icons and bona fide bon vivant, knew the venerable Rothschild family, France’s greatest vintners—and on the odd occasion invited me along. So in those “salad days,” while surfing France’s southwest coast, I had the chance to taste a Premier Cru Classé Merlot, savor a Chateau Mouton Cabernet Sauvignon and try Chateau d’ Yquem, Bordeaux‘s great dessert wine. From then on I was hooked.

Even today French reds are the only ones I know enough about to buy intelligently without the help of a wine connoisseur.

That’s not to say I don’t love California wines; far from it. I once acquired two cases of 1974 Beauleau Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet for $216 a case. A year later it was selling for $120 a bottle. You might think we would have held some of that Napa nectar for later years. But when you have a couple of cases of great wine lying around, it’s hard not to break it out every time good friends come over— which in those days was pretty constantly.

We went through those two cases in about eight months. But it was one of the best strings of dinner parties I ever remember.

Luckily for San Juan, wine is a continued tradition in town, with several spots that offer a varied and distinctive range of choices. Here are just a

At first, it looks like your typical liquor store; owner John Visser doesn’t fussy up the place to look hip. eight months to a year, I have started to notice a lot more trash lying on the ground around some of the areas that are more heavily used, especially around the school grounds. I am not just talking about a few pieces of trash that may have fallen out of a kids pocket or lunch bag but rather a large collection of water bottles, discarded juice boxes and all types of candy wrappers.

When I was in grade school, it was always stressed to not litter and to pick up after yourself. I remember all of the public service announcements on television, with Woodsy the Owl spreading the message: “Give a hoot, don’t pollute.”

school staff to teach the children to not throw trash on the ground and to always pick up after yourself and others because it is clearly obvious that the children’s parents do not teach them this. This should be enforced, and if after recess there is trash on the field, then someone should be held accountable. If children are not taught this simple lesson, future generations will be living in a very filthy community

From the leadership of Principal Tom Ressler to the mettle of each Stallion student, the San Juan Hills High School graduating class of 2015 clearly knows what it means to “ride for the brand.” During the final speech of San Juan Hills’ poignant, yet uplifting graduation ceremony, Stallion of the Year Allie Biedermann spoke to the character of this year’s group of 501 seniors, who gracefully triumphed through their challenges while relishing every moment—whether that meant rushing the field after losing a game, pulling off a lastminute makeshift wedding as a senior prank, or finally making a comeback at the coveted “Clash of the Classes”—the school’s annual music video competition. Biedermann thanked Ressler, who recently retired after serving the school for seven years, for establishing the Stallions’ brand and “being a perfect example of what it looks like to care for others.” “The greatest compliment to the work that we have all done is that it continues to grow and flourish after we leave,” Ressler said during his own address to the graduates. The Stallion Creed offers guiding principles for students, such as persevering and thriving in adversity and never accepting defeat. The school’s alma mater—which the entire class sang together in honor of Ressler—notes that Stallions share their “triumphs, struggles, joys and tears” while staying “forever strong.” Biedermann reflected those sentiments in her closing remarks. “Class of 2015, instead of simply being a class full of adults with high school diplomas, let’s be a class full of difference makers,” Biedermann said. “No matter what you become, remember, you were a Stallion and always will be.” —Allison Jarrell

On behalf of the class of 2015, I would like to thank Trustee Jim Reardon, Deputy Superintendent Clark Hampton, Principal Tom Ressler, and all the staff, family and friends for being here this evening to celebrate the end of a chapter with us.

And now is the time when I talk about things I really hope to become while pretending that you should all follow along. I want, and hope, to convince you that you want to be impatient, lazy and jealous. Yes, you heard correctly—impatient, lazy and jealous.

Our generation has already been confronted with issues of racism and violence—the Ferguson riots, the war in Afghanistan, the deportation of children. Therein lays my first point. We need to be impatient.

We need to be impatient with greed and discrimination; we need to be impatient with violence and poverty. As we grow to become leaders, workers, doctors and lawyers, we must always remember that with great power comes great responsibility. We must always be ever impatient with the wrongs of the world. We must always avoid apathy.

There are already many who are impatient with injustice, going on mission trips to Africa and Mexico and aiding food banks and shelters right here in Orange County. But never forget, lest we falter in our drive. As inscribed on the base of our country’s Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” With these words as our guide, let us impatiently push past the barriers hindering humanity’s progress.

We are going to make a difference. We are going to solve problems.

We will move forward—and that’s good—but we need to make sure that at times we are lazy. Enjoy the little things. Sometimes laziness is a virtue, and since high school’s now over, it’s time to step back, sit down and relax. When I get home, I plan to binge watch “Game of Thrones,” eat way too many Reese’s peanut butter cups and sleep for about three days.

Spend time doing what you love with people you love, not losing track of what really matters amidst the craziness and chaos of life in America.

Teachers, I’m sorry, but sometimes a family night is more important than a homework assignment. My favorite memories of high school will always be the fun—the jokes and games and movies. So yes, laziness is not always a terrible thing, but time is a terrible thing to waste.

Be jealous, not of others, but of your time and use it well. Gary Allan said, “You can be the moon and still be jealous of the stars.” So let’s go straight for the stars. Aim high and be jealous of time, be jealous of relationships and be jealous of dreams. Evan Morgan made this real to me.

He jealously pursued life his entire high school career. Evan and I have taken nearly identical class loads, except for one academic class that was fewer credits. I have never met someone as intelligent or humble as Evan—someone who uses his time to jealously chase his relationships and dreams. Words cannot express my respect for you, and I am honored to call you friend.

We only have so much time in our lives, but we are all young; as we grow as people and become unique individuals, let’s use what time we have to realize our dreams and build meaningful relationships that will last forever.

Finally, please don’t be too impatient, lazy or jealous. I love my parent’s house as much as the next guy, but I really hope to not be living there in 10 years. In the end, we are our own person with our own unique traits and qualities that make us special.

And now, let us boldly go where no one has gone before. Thank you.

At the Movies: ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ for Teens

fter making a huge splash during the festival circuit last spring, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl finally arrives to indie theaters this month.

Though it’s become natural to compare artsy teen movies to Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Juno (2007), Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s film adaptation of Jesse Andrews’ novel is actually more along the lines of Garden State (2004) and (500 Days) of Summer (2009).

During his senior year of high school, selfimposed loner Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) decides to spend his last year as he has the previous three years— aloof and hidden from the rest of the world. The only thing he is committed to in his life is remaking classic films as amateur home movies with his best friend Earl (R.J. Cyler). When his parents (Connie Britton and Nick Offerman) push him to start socializing with classmate Rachel Kushner (Olivia Cooke), who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, his life

takes a sudden turn.

Molly Shannon co-stars as Rachel’s mom and Katherine Hughes plays Greg’s school crush. Gomez-Rejon has all the ingredients for a cute, fun flick, but something is holding it back from being stellar. Mann, Cyler and Cooke are remarkable presences, especially the latter two, who are rather talented newcomers. But Andrews’ dialogue and persona traits he’s given his characters sound and look almost like a cliché of tween hipsterisms from almost a decade ago. Me and Earl

Help for the Throwaway Society

M

y parents grew up during the depression era of the 1930s-40s.

Like many of our parents from that generation, they had very little in the way of money, food and clothing.

Large families like my parents’ lived in small cramped housing sharing handme-down clothes and slept four to a bed. They lived simply—there wasn’t a choice. Everything was used; nothing was wasted. Food waste was unheard of, if not a family crime! Leftover chicken and vegetables were turned into soup stock. Ripened fruit was converted into jams, and morsels of meat scraps fed the cat or dog. Referred to as “The Greatest Generation,” they used sparingly and saved for tomorrow. They didn’t grow up in a time with mass product consumption, food waste and plastic disposal as we have today. They were the true conservationists and environmentalists of yesteryear without even knowing it.

As I observe my own behavior in my household—product consumption, refrigerator food waste and plastic disposal— I’m beginning to cringe with the waste trail I’m generating in the trash and recycle bins. We live in a time of convenience, where often I opt for quick and easy solutions without thinking of the larger impact I have on the earth’s loss of resources. The amount of food waste produced globally each year is more than enough to feed the nearly one billion hungry people in the world.

How do we change our throwaway, convenience-driven society to think more like “The Greatest Generation,” living off less, consuming less and wasting less?

Last week, Pope Francis questioned the same societal and environmental problems our throwaway culture has created and propagated. Pope Francis called for action in a papal letter addressing environmental problems and

climate change, stating “the earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”

He pointed not only to problems associated with trash, but also with air and water pollution.

By Marrianne He identified “throwTaylor away culture” as a major source of these problems: “These problems are closely linked to a throwaway culture which affects the excluded just as it quickly reduces things to rubbish. To cite one example, most of the paper we produce is thrown away and not recycled. It is hard for us to accept that the way natural ecosystems work is exemplary: plants synthesize nutrients which feed herbivores; these in turn become food for carnivores, which produce significant quantities of organic waste which give rise to new generations of plants. But our industrial system, at the end of its cycle of production and consumption, has not developed the capacity to absorb and reuse waste and by-products. We have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of nonrenewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use, reusing and recycling them. A serious consideration of this issue would be one way of counteracting the throwaway culture which affects the entire planet, but it must be said that only limited progress has been made in this regard.”

Environmentalists and United Nations leaders around the world are praising the Pope’s strong message.

“We share Pope Francis’ view that our response to environmental degrada-

tion and climate change cannot only be defined by science, technology or economics, but is also a moral imperative,” United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director Achim Steiner said in a prepared statement.

“Humanity’s environmental stewardship of the planet must recognize the interests of both current and future generations.”

The bottom line? “Waste not, want not,” as my mother would say.

We need to take lessons from past generations and do much more in our efforts to reduce our footprint in our own households.

Here are 10 tips for a greener wallet and world: 1. Shop smart by planning meals and using a shopping list to avoid impulse buying.

2. Bring your own grocery bags to the store; don’t use the plastic or paper bags.

3. Purchase produce in natural form, not bags or plastic boxes.

4. When eating out, share a meal and save. Most restaurants serve huge por-

Women Traveling Alone

W

ith the arrival of summer, I am often asked about travel, particularly by women who have no one to travel with.

Donia, who is from San Clemente, asked, “Have you written anything about traveling solo after age 50? I love to travel but find that, especially on cruises, the single supplements are daunting. I have traveled to India, Thailand and Europe with women friends (no tours) and would love suggestions on websites catering to our type of traveler.”

What Donia is referring to as “single supplements” is when cruise lines display the list price of cabins, the prices are based on two people or double occupancy. For example, when my partner Greta and I check out a cruise, and the price for the stateroom is $4,000, that means the price for each of us is $2,000.

But when Donia checks out the same cruise and the same-sized stateroom, the cost for her is $4,000. That is the single supplement and makes cruising for many singles prohibitively expensive.

Some cruise or travel companies offer to find roommates for singles to lower the per person room cost. That could be helpful, but what happens if you get matched with someone you don’t like? You sacrifice privacy as well.

Some travel companies cater only to women: Sights and Soul Travels, WomenTraveling.com and The Women’s Travel Group, for example. They often reduce fares for singles.

I asked travel agent Ann Ronan of San Juan Capistrano to comment on single supplements. Ann said, “The cruise industry recognizes the growing numbers of single travelers and is getting creative in balancing the need for profit with the demand for singles cabins. Norwegian’s Getaway, Breakaway and Epic ships, and Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas—now have solo cabins.

“All of the major river cruise companies also offer waived or discounted single supplements on select sailings,” Ronan

continued. “For example, Tauck has no single supplements on any European river cruise if you don’t mind the category 1 cabins with a small window. Their French balcony cabins have discounted supplements.

T

hree times a week, the San Juan Capistrano Community Center gym hosts one of the most successful basketball teams in the country. The tightknit group of players has been together for over 15 years, won four consecutive national championships and a handful of international titles. They have won these titles at the ages of 65, 70, 75 and 80.

On July 12, the San Juan Capistranobased USA 80 team, made entirely of players over the age of 80, will travel to Minneapolis to compete in the 2015 National Senior Games with the hopes of capturing their fi fth-straight national senior championship.

smith, 82, has been the driving force behind the group, gathering some of the best senior players from California and beyond to make what has been a dominant team.

“That’s what is kind of unique. We’ve won every time and everyone is kind of gearing for us (this year),” Messersmith said.

Five of the team’s seven members live in Orange or Los Angeles County, which makes it easier for the team to get together and practice. Messersmith said the practices at the community gym can be light, but as the National Senior Games draws closer, they begin to ramp up the intensity.

“When we get to the nationals, the ball game changes real fast. Attention goes up.

We have our game face on,” Messersmith said. “Everybody wants this.” CD

The West Coast Futbol Club’s boys 16U team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships by going 2-0-1 in pool play earlier this week.

The tournament features the top youth club soccer teams from the entire western region of the country.

The West Coast Futbol team, which draws players from San Juan Capistrano, will face Seattle United 98 Copa in the quarterfinals on June 26.

The local team opened tournament play on June 22 and tied 1-1 with Real Colorado National. From there, the West Coast Futbol Club team defeated Rio Rapids from New Mexico, 1-0, and Washington Rush, 2-1, to advance to the next stage of competition.

If the West Coast Futbol Club boys 16U team can advance past the quarterfinals, they will play June 27 in the semifinals.

The team includes: Nicholas Aquino, Chasen Brutocao, Blake Bunce, Derrek Chan, Yarin Dan, Trevor Denney, Nikdel Ghaemi, Brett Jones, James Langton, Samuel Martinez, Michael Oakson, William O’Connor, Juan Sebastian Olivares, William Ospina Torres, Alfonso Quezada Osorno, Sean Rochford, Alberto Torres and Braden Zines.

The team is coached by Oliver Wyss and Bryan Wallace.

On July 1, San Juan Capistrano resident and recent Dana Hills High School gradu-

ate Jackson Zoch will be inducted into the United State Naval Academy.

Zoch, who played baseball while at Dana Hills, will go through six weeks of basic midshipman training before beginning his academic and athletic collegiate career. Zoch will also play baseball for the Academy.

After his graduation, Zoch will be required to serve at least five years active duty as an officer in the Navy or Marines.

Zoch batted .182 with four RBIs and one home run his senior season. On the mound, he went 2-0 with a 1.79 ERA over 15 and two thirds innings. Zoch also played club baseball with the Southern California Bombers, where he was primarily scouted by the Naval Academy.

“I love playing baseball and I am excited to be able to continue playing at such an incredible institution. I am honored,” Zoch said in a press release. CD

Junior outside hitter and setter Noah Dyer was named the division’s player of the year. Sophomore setter Jon Minsberg and sophomore libero Jacob Pelletier were both named to the All-CIF-SS team.

The Warriors’ head coach, Ryan Van Rensselaer, was named the division’s coach

of the year.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal had three players named to the All-CIF-SS Division 4 team.

Senior opposite Matt Nichols, junior setter Jordan Chun and freshman outside hitter David Chou were all selected for the team.

Chou was the only freshman to gain All-CIFSS honors. CD

San Juan Athletes Earn All-CIF-SS Honors

he 2015 spring prep sports season is over, which means the CIF-SS offices have issued their All-CIF-SS honors, acknowledging student-athletes who excelled over the entire season. Here is a list of San Juan Capistrano athletes who were named to All-CIF-SS teams for their respective sport.

sion 1 team. Lewis, one of the more highly touted sophomores in the nation, helped lead the Lions to a win in the Boras Classic South division bracket and a first-place finish in the Trinity League.

Capistrano Valley Christian senior pitcher AJ Discenzo was named to the All-CIF-SS Division 5 team. Discenzo was the ace of the Eagles pitching staff, going 6-0 in 16 appearances. Discenzo carried a 1.18 ERA and also made four saves.

Saddleback Valley Christian’s Caleb Ward was also named to the All-CIF-SS Division 5 squad. The senior center fielder and pitcher led the team with a .388 batting average and tallied 17 stolen bases. As a pitcher, Ward went 5-2, threw four complete games and had one shutout.
