the school calendar and selecting a start date more inclusive by engaging more community members and making sure that all stakeholders have a voice. Staff proposed creating multi-year school calendars while enabling “maximum semester instruction time.” The new approach presented would involve soliciting more input, creating an online survey and hosting a public forum.

The second agenda item, presented by Trustee John Alpay, asked that the board reconsider amending the Aug. 15 start date for the 2016-2017 academic calendar due to additional data gathered by staff and information from parents. Other trustees noted the educational benefits of an early start, while Alpay argued that what’s right for one district or school may not be the right choice for another.

Five things San Juan should know this week Capistrano Grind Skatepark Fundraising Underway THE LATEST: Fundraising efforts are now underway for a skatepark in San Juan Capistrano following city approval of a site on Aug. 11. The approved location will harbor a 20,000-square-foot Capistrano Grind skatepark at the northwest end of the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park, located near the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley, Del Obispo Elementary and Marco Forster Middle School.

Following the approval, Capistrano Grind organizers said it’s vital to keep the momentum going throughout the fundraising and design process. The grassroots group, which has secured multiple local sponsors and is applying to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is hoping to raise $1 million to design and construct the park.

In addition to garnering support from San Clemente’s Sheckler Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation, Capistrano Grind is fundraising by placing coin canisters in 80 local businesses and selling T-shirts online at www.capistranogrindskatepark. bigcartel.com. Organizer Nathan Banda said a recycling drive will likely take place at the end of the month, and the group will begin selling refreshments at the San Juan Sports Park snack bar during future soccer games. Capistrano Grind also has an online fundraising campaign at www. indiegogo.com/projects/capistrano-grindskate-park#/story.

Dana Point City Manager Doug Chotkevys said San Juan’s Interim City Manager Keith Till called earlier this week to talk about the skatepark, but the two have not yet discussed a potential partnership between the cities. Chotkevys said he hopes to speak with Till within the next couple weeks to see what the city will request financially.

In addition to raising funds, Banda said the group is addressing concerns about liability by consulting with other cities that have successfully implemented skateparks. Capistrano Grind is also initiating the request for proposal process for the skatepark’s design this week.

Fr. Junípero Serra to be Canonized Sept. 23 THE LATEST: In honor of Father Junípero Serra’s canonization by Pope Francis on Sept. 23, Mission San Juan Capistrano is honoring its founder with a week of celebratory events, including live streaming video of Pope Francis ordaining Serra as Saint Serra. Pope Francis is visiting the U.S. for the canonization and will perform the ceremony at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The celebration begins on Sunday, Sept.

20, with a ceremonial bell-ringing at 9 a.m., followed by a special tour at 2 p.m.

The bell ringing and tour will commence each day through Sept. 27, with the exception of Sept. 23. On Sept. 21, the Mission’s, “Legacy of Saint Serra”, exhibit will open, featuring Father Serra’s road to sainthood.

Monsignor Arthur Holquin will give a lecture “Legacy of Father Serra” on Sept.

CUSD to Consider New Calendar Process, 20162017 Start Date THE LATEST: After the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees discussed two calendar-related agenda items Wednesday night, the consensus of the board was to further examine implementing a new, more inclusive process for determining future school calendars, while also revisiting the 2016-2017 academic calendar at the board’s next meeting.

CUSD students began school early this year on Aug. 25 following a March 11 vote by the district board to adjust the academic calendar. The board also voted at that time to begin the 2016-2017 year on Aug. 15, 2016. Trustees said the earlier start would better align CUSD with other county schools as well as Saddleback College.

Currently, 18 other Orange County school districts begin school pre-Labor Day. The switch has been a controversial one, with parents at Wednesday’s meeting, voicing concerns about the consistently hot temperatures in August. Parents also said that while the earlier start date may benefit high school students, they don’t believe it works at the elementary level.

CUSD Eyes Crown Valley or Wood Canyon for Charter School Site THE LATEST: After two of San Juan Capistrano’s elementary schools—Del Obispo and Kinoshita—were examined by the Capistrano Unified School District as potential charter school sites, tides changed at Wednesday’s CUSD Board of Trustees meeting, where staff recommended the board vote instead on the closure of Crown Valley Elementary in Laguna Niguel.

Community Roots Academy, a kindergarten through eighth-grade charter school, currently sits on the same campus as Wood Canyon Elementary in Aliso Viejo. In the spring, Community Roots appealed to the district to find more space for its students as it continues to grow.

According to the California Department of Education, Proposition 39 requires that the school district “make available, to all charter schools operating in their school district with projections of at least 80 units of average daily attendance (ADA), facilities that will sufficiently accommodate all of the charter’s in-district students, and that facilities be “reasonably equivalent” to other classrooms, buildings, or facilities in the district.”

At Wednesday’s meeting, staff presented multiple factors that went into the decision to select Crown Valley, including current enrollment, capacity, facility requirements, future development, transportation, existing specialized programs, available space at neighboring schools, school of choice and neighboring charter schools.

WHAT’S NEXT: After about two hours of emotional public comment and discussion at the dais, Trustee Jim Reardon proposed that Wood Canyon Elementary be reconsidered for closure as it would be the “least impactful” option. While some trustees disagreed, a 4-3 board vote ultimately determined that Wood Canyon will be included alongside Crown Valley for a final analysis and decision on the matter on Sept. 23.—AJ

Councilwoman Speaks of Abortion, Religious Views during Invocation THE LATEST: Following the Sept. 1 San Juan Capistrano City Council meeting, some residents expressed shock over Mayor Pro Tem Pam Patterson’s invocation, which included her views on abortion as well as a plug for online videos featuring Jonathan Cahn, a Messianic Jewish rabbi who is known for describing the September 11 attacks as a divine warning to the United States to repent.

Patterson began her invocation last Tuesday by saying, “Holy Father, we stand before you this evening to acknowledge the fact that we have turned away from you … You can see it in the everyday news that we read. We have killed 55 million children in our nation now. We’ve legislated them out of existence. And so we’re asking for you to open our eyes and our ears to understand that, in fact, we can be facing judgement.”

Patterson then transitioned from the topic of abortion to asking that “everyone try to watch” videos featuring Cahn, author of the books The Harbinger and The Shemitah, “to truly understand the direction this country is going.” Patterson explained that Cahn spoke at the presidential inaugural prayer breakfast in 2013. She described his YouTube videos as “definitely something to see.”

Most recently, Cahn has been mentioned in numerous Christian news outlets for his comments that the United States is facing God’s impending judgement for legalizing gay marriage.

Behmerwohld approached the podium to respond to Patterson’s comments.

“I don’t have an issue with nondenominational invocations, but when you get up there and preach about abortion from a council dais, I think you’re so far over the top, I can’t even express myself,” Behmerwohld said.

While no one else spoke in regard to the invocation, dozens of community members took to social media after the meeting to express their aversion to Patterson’s speech, which some felt crossed the line into proselytizing.

According to a U.S. Supreme Court May 2014 ruling in Greece v. Galloway, a “pattern of activity” that would render an invocation policy unconstitional includes “preaching conversion” or “proselytizing or advancing any faith or belief.” The ruling mandates inquiry into “a prayer opportunity as a whole, rather than the content of a single prayer.”

The topic of creating guidelines for invocations came before the San Juan Capistrano City Council on Jan. 17, 2012. Council comments included “having guidelines for invocations which disallows political or advocacy of a specific religion, but would allow religion reference from the person giving the invocation.” The majority of the council preferred continuing the invocations as non-sectarian and only given by the council members; the motion carried 4-1 with Derek Reeve dissenting.

WHAT’S NEXT: When asked about her choice of invocation content, Patterson stood by her comments.

“I believe my invocation was timely and pertinent in light of the Pope’s upcoming visit and his recent comments on abortion,” Patterson wrote in an email.

CERT to Host Disaster Drill in San Juan on Sept. 12 Five local cities will be participating in San Juan Capistrano’s Community Emergency Response Team’s (CERT) annual disaster preparedness exercises on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the San Juan Mobile Estates. CERTs from San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, San Clemente, Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel, in addition to Tri-Cities RACES, a three-city HAM radio communications group, are working together to host the event.

The event, running from 7:30 a.m. to early afternoon, is expected to have several hundred participants and is designed to simulate disaster scenarios and train citizens in a hands-on environment. A mock earthquake and all residual consequences including injured people and animals, damaged homes, small fires and gas leaks will set the scene. From there, all subsequent exercises will cover areas CERTs are trained in, such as first aid, light search and rescue, small fire suppression, logistics and communications.

While San Juan Mobile Estates will host the event, local Boy Scouts will be acting as “victims” and the Orange County Fire Authority will be on standby to assist in all of the event’s activities. Over 1,500 CERT members have been trained by the five cities participating.

“The partnership between CERT and San Juan Capistrano Police and Fire has led to a city that is better prepared to respond to major disasters,” Lt. Scott Spaulding, Chief of Police Services for San Juan Capistrano, said in a press release.

“We have a community that takes the time to learn what to do during emergencies, and as a result, more people are able and willing to help neighbors in times of need.

Suspect in Laguna Niguel Murder a Former Dana Hills Student

Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies said Craig Tanber, 37, is the primary suspect of a stabbing homicide that took place early Monday morning at a bar in Laguna Niguel, just a couple miles from the border of San

Juan Capistrano.

According to a press release distributed Monday evening, OCSD officials said Tanber has an extensive gang history and is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.

Around midnight on Monday, Tanber was in an “altercation” with Shayan Mazroei, 22, of Laguna Nigel at Patsy’s Irish Pub, located at 28971 Golden Lantern.

Tanber allegedly stabbed Mazroei in the upper torso. Paramedics took him to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Tanber has been associated with the prison-based and Southern California gang known as Public Enemy Number 1, or PENI, a white supremacists organiza-

tion that, according to FBI information, is known for distribution of methamphetamines, credit card fraud and identity theft.

In 2004, Tanber was implicated in the death of a 26-year-old Huntington Beach man, according to police records. Tanber was one of nine suspects in the case and was eventually found guilty as an accessory to manslaughter. The original case was ruled a mistrial because a juror had performed illegal research on one of the defendants. In 2007, Tanber received six years for his crimes.

According to a Facebook page that was set up for him in 2013, Tanber was recently released from prison. The Facebook page also identifies Tanber as a former student of Dana Hill High School.

Tanber is described as a Caucasian man, 6 feet, 1 inch tall, 180 pounds with multiple tattoos that cover his body. As of Thursday morning, Tanber had not been seen since the night in question and OCSD was asking for the public’s help in locating him. The OCSD press release stated he frequents Laguna Niguel and areas around Huntington Beach.

A 47-year-old woman was found by police saying she was not trespassing on an informant’s property. An informant said the woman had come into his office, asking him to call 911. The details of her incarceration were not immediately available.

Round Two El Nido residents relish first victory after city hearing while helping each other with funds to pay their first month of increased rent

he residents of El Nido Mobile Estates have jumped the first of several hurdles in their fight against a $641 monthly rent increase that was implemented Sept. 1.

City-appointed hearing officer Michael Roush, who presided over a two-day El Nido Mobile Estates rent hearing on Aug. 17 and 18, sent his ruling in favor of the El Nido residents to City Attorney Jeff Ballinger last Wednesday, which states the mobile home park owner’s rent increase “is not proper.”

That ruling must now go through two more channels—the city’s Housing Advisory Committee and then on to City Council for final review and a decision in the case.

“The City Council should reverse the rent increase to no lower than the maximum allowable increase under the ordinance,” Roush wrote in his recommendation, referring to the city’s rent control ordinance. He concluded that park owner Richard Worley should pay 100 percent of the administrative fee.

Roush also wrote that “if the park owner is able to produce documentation demonstrating the previous park owner did not impose all of the rent increases to which the previous park owner was entitled under the ordinance,” the City Council could allow the hearing to be reopened “solely for the purpose of receiving and considering this new information.”

Located off of Ortega Highway, El Nido consists of 156 units for seniors, with rent ranging from $550 to $1,150 per month.

According to the city’s municipal code, “mobile home park rent increases imposed by the mobile home park property owners cannot exceed the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the preceding calendar year.” El Nido residents received a letter April 24 stating the park previously “intended to implement a rent increase based on a 1.3 percent CPI adjustment,” but the letter continued that the park owner would not be implementing that increase. On May 13, residents received notice that rent would be increased by $641 effective in September. A group of residents living in El Nido filed a petition to the city opposing the rent increase, which more than doubles the monthly rent for some, and a hearing was set.

Worley’s attorney, Robert Coldren, had the burden of proving the rent hike is admissible during the August hearing.

Coldren said that even with the $641 increase, Worley isn’t receiving a fair market return on his property. Despite that assertion, Roush ruled that the $641 increase per month is not necessary for Worley to receive a “fair, just and reasonable return” on the property.

Among Roush’s findings were that the residents’ petition—which organizers said had more than 90 percent of residents’ signatures—was not filed prematurely, and that the rent hike exceeds the maximum allowable increase under San Juan Capistrano’s mobile home rent ordinance.

Roush’s recommendation must now go to the city’s three-person Housing Advisory Committee before reaching the City

Council. The advisory committee is set to meet on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. in City Hall to discuss Roush’s ruling. The meeting is open to the public.

Once the committee’s recommendation is made, the City Council can agendize the discussion. However, with the next regularly-scheduled council meeting on Oct. 6, that leaves residents facing another month of paying an extra $641 across the board.

El Nido residents Carol Brinkman and Tom Perrin recently spoke with The Dispatch about the lengths some residents went in helping others with payments they could not afford in September. Brinkman and Perrin estimate that the mobile home park has 42 veterans, 44 disabled persons and 32 widows/widowers living there, all on fixed incomes.

So when it came time to pay the Sept.

1 $641 increase, residents dug into their savings, some borrowing money from children or relatives. Brinkman said one resident even offered to sell her antique armoire in order to help pay for her neighbor’s rent. For those who had no one to turn to for help, neighbors came forward, offering assistance.

In other instances, kindness came from complete strangers online. The residents created a fundraiser at www.gofundme. com/3u2fjyfk called “Save the Seniors in SJC,” and thus far they’ve raised $1,130 in 19 days. While the support is very encouraging, Brinkman points out that the amount would not quite cover two residents’ rent increases.

“The residents in the park are suffering from anxiety and emotional stress—to the point that some of the people have become physically ill—some have even suffered strokes,” Brinkman wrote in an email.

“The fight is not over, and the October rent is now looming in the future. Many of the residents no longer have any resource left to make the elevated rent, should no solution or remedy be in place before it becomes due.”

Brinkman said she’s impressed and compelled by the underlying story of their fight against the rent hike—the anonymous acts of generosity and kindness between the residents of El Nido Mobile Estates, “many of whom, prior to this war, hardly knew one another.”

Letters to the Editor LAWSUIT WILL SHINE LIGHT ON CITY COUNCIL CORRUPTION —Matt Gaffney, San Juan Capistrano As bad as the Vermeulen lawsuit will be for San Juan Capistrano’s finances, one good outcome will be the bright light it will shine on the new City Council’s corruption. The worst-kept secret in town is that the Orange County District Attorney is currently investigating allegations of criminal misconduct regarding the Urban Village referendum.

While the details of those investigations are sealed for now, the discovery process for civil lawsuits like the Vermeulen’s will be much more open to public review.

When City Council, staff and dozens of others are deposed in preparation for the trial, the drama could be outstanding. It’s less likely that witnesses will be willing to perjure themselves in sworn depositions when the consequences for doing so are severe.

Here are the questions I would like to have answered:

1. Did any City Council members conspire together before and after the election to distribute false information regarding proposed development projects? Were meetings held? Where? Who attended?

Who was the source of the false and misleading information published by another local publication?

2. Who authored the referendum documents? Did the author receive any favors in exchange?

3. Who paid for and distributed the shameful “anonymous” flyers dropped on doorsteps around town?

4. Did City Council members use communications with anyone as a “go between” to prepare for public votes without appearing to violate the Brown Act? When those questions have been answered, the FPPC investigations can start.

Mayor Reeve and the City Council are currently spending hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars on lawyers to defend themselves. Don’t think of it as wasted money. Think of it as the best entertainment you can buy. It’s going to be a fun fall season.

As a lifelong resident of San Juan Capistrano, I’m appalled at how this council has turned my town into a laughingstock.

Their shenanigans are beyond belief.

WHY HIRE SECOND FIRM TO SELECT NEW CITY MANAGER? —Rob Lindquist, San Juan Capistrano I read with interest the article on the new City Council voting 4-1, with Sam Allevato dissenting, to hire a consultant to conduct a workshop “to aid in the selection of a new city manager.” This consultant will be in addition to the search firm, Ralph Anderson and Associates, already hired and paid for by the city. According to the article, the four council members chose the most expensive consulting firm (measured either by hourly rate or total hours billed). The article noted that the winning firm is headed by an apparent political ally of our current mayor. Putting aside the issue of why the council needs to pay good money in the first place for a workshop to help it with a selection process for which it is already paying a search firm, why do our hard-earned tax dollars have to go the highest bidder and not one of the lower two bidders? Is Mayor Derek Reeve’s political ally that much more qualified than the others?

One suspects that the current council majority may be of the camp that views our current president as a free-spending Marxist socialist who flouts the democratic process. However, when you look at the current council majority’s actions (such as suppressing the rights of property owners to develop their own property in the case of the Laguna Glen and Urban Village projects and selecting John Perry to replace Roy Byrnes because of his political reliability rather than choosing one of the top vote-getters in the most recent election) President Obama actually comes across as a tight-fisted libertarian in comparison.

Go figure.

cademy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton and his rock band, The Boxmasters, will be performing at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Sept. 17, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show beginning at 8 p.m. The stop will be part of the group’s N.A.C. Tour, which follows the release of their two most recent albums Somewhere Down The Road, debuting in the spring of 2015, and Providence, a compilation of 11 previously unheard recordings done by the band.

Formed during 2007 in Bellflower, California, The Boxmasters released their first self-titled album, which received critical acclaim. The album included the radio hit “The Poor House” and covered songs by The Beatles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mel Tillis, among others. In 2008 the band followed a nationwide tour with a holiday album entitled “Christmas Cheer,” and a year later released “Modbilly” which made No. 14 on the 2009 Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Albums of The Year.

wo things are certain in the month of September—a new school semester has just begun, and the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society will have its annual heritage barbecue toward the end of the month.

In 1902, W.M. McFadden reflected on his 30 years as Superintendent of Schools in the area. When McFadden first arrived, there were only three schools in then-south Los Angeles County—Anaheim, Santa Ana and San Juan Capistrano. Professor Kuelp taught in Anaheim and T.J. Scully taught at the school in Capistrano. McFadden started teaching in Santa Ana. Despite Spanish being the primary language spoken by the students at that time, not one of the teachers was fluent.

McFadden stated, “To my surprise, with but little or no knowledge of English on the part of the students and no knowledge of Spanish on the MOMENTS IN part of the teachers, the TIME

By Jan Siegel children soon acquired a good knowledge of English as well as mathematics, geography and history.”

McFadden recalled an incident following the opening of the Capistrano school house—which was dedicated in 1871— that illustrated the language barrier and difference of culture between the teachers and students.

The students had taken their seats, placing their lassos under their desks, when a little fellow suddenly appeared at the door crying, “Dominguez, los coches estau fuera!” (Dominguez, the pigs are out!)

Immediately, the lassos were secured and there was a wild scramble for the door.

Before the astonished teacher—who did

not understand Spanish—could stop the stampede, the room was almost entirely deserted, while juvenile yells and pig squeals filled the air outside.

After the porkers were “scientifically” returned to the corral, the young scholars filed back into their rooms still armed with their trusty lariats—which they knew so well how to handle—their faces beaming from the exercise they had undergone.

The teacher then gave them their first lesson in school discipline, and there was great consternation among the hitherto unrestrained youngsters at learning they must not leave the room without permission, even though “los coches estau fuera.”

At the Historical Society Heritage barbecue on Sunday, September 27 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the old-timers who have grown up in San Juan Capistrano and can relate wonderful stories as to what the way life was like in our community generations ago.

and conservation solutions through an interactive digital platform to empower students to be the true voice of the movement.

In its first year, The Water Effect will engage 50,000 high school students and 100 teachers across 20 campuses through digital and in-person activities. Hurley and surf legend Rob Machado have also teamed up with The Water Effect movement to take it beyond the classroom.

“We are honored to be working alongside Rob and Hurley as we create The Water Effect—a movement to inspire our youth as leaders in the conversation on creative water solutions,” said Evan Marks, executive director of The Ecology Center.

The Water Effect will also connect students through social media, creating an open dialogue and allowing user-generated content to drive the water conservation conversation.

The Big Retirement Challenge: Deciding Which Bucket List Items to Tackle First

B

efore I retired on January 30, retired people often told me, “You will wonder where the time goes and be busier than ever.”

I suspected they were right. I had been building ON LIFE AND a bucket list over the LOVE AFTER 50 years and it had several

By Tom Blake items on it. The top item: travel with my partner Greta as much as we can while our health permits. In April and May, we took a nice trip to Europe.

Second item on the list: exercise. Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) at Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor fulfills that goal three to four times per week.

Other items on the list include continuing to write this column, and then preparing for the fantasy football season, which kicks off (pun intended) this week.

One item had been on the original bucket list since 2005, the year the movie Walk the Line—the portrayal of Johnny Cash’s life— was released. I had Courtesy of Tom P. Blake a problem with the movie; I felt the portrayal of Johnny was way too negative.

Why did that concern me? I knew Johnny Cash and worked with him for two years in the mid-1970s when I was the marketing director for the Victoria Station restaurant chain. I had hired Johnny to do our radio commercials and got to know him well. He was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

That 10-year bucket list item: write a book that will reveal the kind and caring side of Johnny Cash that I had witnessed first-hand. I simply wanted to set the record straight. Before retiring, I didn’t have time to finish it.

Finally, 10 years later, over this summer, I wrote the book. Last week, I put the full-court press on finishing it. If you don’t do it that way with a book, you’ll never get it done. On Friday, I uploaded the finished Page 24

book to one of the largest online ebook bookstores in the world, smashwords.com.

I titled this latest work, The Johnny Cash I Knew. A Kind and Caring Man. Most of the 17 pictures included in its pages were taken 40 years ago with my old Kodak camera. I also included many examples of Johnny’s kindness in the book. The most unique experience with Johnny was going into San Quentin Prison with him for a concert.

Many older people tell me they want to write a book, to leave a legacy for their families. Ebooks are a great way to accomplish that goal without much cost and, after they are published, they can be updated and changed. I invite readers to contact me if they have questions about ebook publishing.

So, with the book published, it’s time to turn to other bucket list items, but which ones?

Therein lies the challenge of retirement: which activity to tackle next? Those retirees who said, “You’ll be busier than ever,” were right.

Maybe I’ll open a restaurant. Nope, already done that one. It’s probably time for another trip with Greta.

San Juan Prep Football Roundup

he 2015 high school football season is off and running. In our weekly roundup, we will get you caught up on all five of the San Juan Capistrano prep football programs and prime you for this week’s matchups. Tartans Topple Eagles in Shutout Victory After suffering a blowout loss to St. Margaret’s in its 2014 season opener, Capistrano Valley Christian sought revenge on Sept. 4 in a nonleague matchup with the Tartans.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the odds were not in their favor.

The Tartans used a balanced and efficient offensive attack and halted the Eagles progress with their defense in a dominating 42-0 nonleague victory.

Just four plays into their first offensive drive, Eagles (1-1) junior quarterback Dawson Piper threw an interception, allowing the Tartans to take over at the Eagles’ 19-yard line. It took standout running back Nick Shanks one play to sprint the entire 19 yards and give the Tartans a 7-0 lead. This lead would only continue to grow throughout the night.

Shanks, entering his senior season, had an unusual yet undeniably efficient

offensive performance against the Eagles. In addition to his rushing touchdown to begin the game, the star wide receiver scored both of the Tartans’ receiving touchdowns on just two catches.

Shanks, who had a prolific 2014 season, finished the night with 45 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards.

In another standout performance, St. Margaret’s junior quarterback George Krantz threw 12-19 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Nick Krantz, George’s brother, ran 14 times for 127 yards and a rushing touchdown.

The Tartans kept the ball on the ground against the Eagles, piling up 240 rushing yards.

Fortunately for the Eagles (1-1), St. Margaret’s is among the best teams—if not the best—that they will face throughout the regular season. They will have a considerably easier Sept. 11 matchup against Mary Star of the Sea. St. Margaret’s (2-0) will face a league rival of Capistrano Valley Christian’s this week as they prepare for an away game against The Webb Schools.

Williams Powers JSerra in Win Over Chino Hills JSerra was paced by senior transfer Avery William’s three touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Chino Hills on Sept.

4. Williams scored twice in the first

quarter, one by way of a touchdown pass from quarterback Riley O’Brien and another on the ground, and senior Connor O’Brien caught a touchdown pass to build a comfortable 21-7 lead.

After Chino Hills tied the game 7-7 early in the first quarter, the Lions (2-0) defense clamped down and did not allow their opponents to score again until the fourth quarter. Chino Hills figured to be one of JSerra’s toughest nonleague opponents.

JSerra will now play host to Huntington Beach (1-1), which comes into the matchup off a lopsided loss to San Clemente.

O’Brien Continues to Shine for San Juan Hills San Juan Hills senior quarterback Patrick O’Brien led the Stallions to a 3214 win over Canyon on Sept. 4. O’Brien completed 29 of 36 passes for 279 yards with a touchdown and an interception. It was another efficient performance in the air for O’Brien but the senior did most of his damage on the ground. O’Brien rushed the ball 11 times for 72 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior receiver Jacob Huff continued his torrid start to the season, reeling in 12 catches for 147 yards. Huff, who caught 14 passes for 196 yards against San Clemente on Aug. 28, has 343 yards receiving in two games.

Patrick O’Brien will lead the San Juan Hills football team against Capistrano Valley on Sept. 11.

Warriors Run Their Way to First Victory Saddleback Valley Christian opened their season with a 40-21 victory over Crean Lutheran on Sept. 3. The Warriors (1-0) stuck to a rush-first game plan, amassing 311 rushing yards and five rushing scores. Junior quarterback Cade Henjum and senior running back Dalton Lohman rushed for 138 yards and 126 yards, respectively.

Senior Hoops Team Honored at Council Meeting

F

or their recent tournament success, a group of local senior basketball players, dubbed Team USA 80, were honored at the San Juan Capistrano City Council meeting on Sept. 1.

The team, comprised of players over the age of 80, was honored for their gold medal-winning effort at the 2015 National Senior Games in Minneapolis in July. The San Juan Capistrano-based squad entered pool play in the tournament as a lower seed, but rallied from two early losses to defeat a senior team from Texas and claim the national championship.

The USA Team 80 team has won tournaments at the ages of 65, 70, 75 and 80.

The councilmembers remarked on how resilient the group has been over the course of several decades.

“We are fortunate to recognize a group of gentlemen who demonstrate that with determination, teamwork and heart, you can persevere at any age,” Mayor Derek Reeve said that night.

The group of eight players is led by player-manager and San Juan resident Bob Messersmith, who took to the podium to speak on the group’s behalf. After Messersmith introduced his players to those in attendance, he outlined how the city of San Juan Capistrano has embraced senior basketball at the community center. Three times a week, the basketball courts inside the community center’s gym are reserved for senior pick-up games.

Messersmith said that the team plans to make another run at a national tournament championship in 2017, when Team USA 80 will compete in the age 85 and up division. CD
