Five things San Juan should know this week Parks & Rec Commission to Examine Boys & Girls Clubs’ Funding THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano Parks, Recreation, Senior and Youth Services Commission voted unanimously on Nov. 16 to agendize discussion of the city’s funding of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley, which has a branch and its headquarters located on Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano.

Commissioner Kim McCarthy placed the item on the agenda, calling for a review of the city’s monthly donation of $7,800 to the club “in order to determine the direct benefit to San Juan taxpayers.”

McCarthy wrote that she believes many of the children do not reside in San Juan.

“This is about taxpayer dollars and how we spend them,” McCarthy said. “I want to look at that because I’m not sure if we should be spending money … for children that live in other cities … maybe it can be better spent elsewhere.

“I fundamentally believe that taxpayer dollars ... are to be spent on infrastructure and safety purposes,” she said.

More than 2,700 children from 11 different communities were served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley in 2014, with an average daily attendance of 365 kids between the three locations, according to the club’s website. Of that total, 243 children—roughly 67 percent—attended the club in San Juan Capistrano. In Aliso Viejo, 75 kids are served daily on average and in Rancho Santa Margarita, about 47 children are served daily.

Just over 85 percent of the clubs’ membership qualifies for free or reduced lunches, and the club provided 32,002 meals last year. Programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs include education, environment, health, arts, careers, alcohol/drug and pregnancy prevention, gang prevention, leadership development and athletics, all taught by 20 trained club professionals and over 200 volunteers.

Nicole Watson, area director of the Boys & Girls Clubs, addressed the commission last Monday night.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” Watson said. “We love the kids from San Juan Capistrano and we’re just very thankful to be in this town.”

Following public comments, which were largely in favor of continuing financial support for Boys & Girls Clubs, and some confusion over whether the commission could discuss the item in full that night, staff clarified that a majority vote of the commission would be needed to agendize the item for a future discussion. The commission voted unanimously to agendize the topic, with several commissioners noting that they support the club and would be interested in learning more about the services it provides for area residents.

Parks & Rec Commission Also Set to Discuss Riding Park THE LATEST: Another item of interest to San Juan Capistrano residents was agendized for a future meeting by the Parks, Recreation, Senior and Youth Services Commission on Nov. 16—the use of the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, located off of Ortega Highway.

Commissioner Kim McCarthy proposed an agenda item to discuss “a resolution fulfilling the promise made to San Juan Capistrano residents with the passage of the 2008 Measure Y Open Space Bond by providing unrestricted access to all

areas of the eastern open space at La Pata and Ortega, with the exception of areas protected by conservation easements.”

McCarthy recommends not renewing the Blenheim riding park lease, not leasing to other private companies and instead providing unrestricted access to the property.

The vast majority of residents who spoke on the item during public comment, however, said they already have full access to the park—having picnics on the grounds, seeing horse shows for free and riding through on horseback and bicycle.

Other speakers mentioned the high cost of maintaining said property.

San Juan Capistrano Could Partner with Dana Point for 2016 Trolley THE LATEST: After the cities of San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point both met their minimum ridership goals for their 2015 trolley programs, city officials are exploring the potential to team up for a connected trolley system for the summer of 2016.

In September, the Dana Point City Council received and filed a report on its trolley pilot program, which well-exceeded the target ridership. According to the

city’s data, the trolley had 17,707 riders on the weekends between June 26 and Sept.

7, with an average of 14.8 riders per hour.

Special events attracted 4,894 riders, with an average of 54.38 riders per hour. The summer’s grand total was 22,601 riders, with an average of 17.52 riders per hour.

In San Juan Capistrano, the City Council discussed the results of its summer trolley program at the Nov. 17 council meeting. The trolley, which ran from June 12 through Sept. 5, attracted 4,779 riders—including 4,010 riders on the weekends, 697 riders on the Fourth of July and 72 riders for the San Juan Summer Nights Concert Series.

City staff reminded the City Council that in January, OCTA “will issue a call for projects to fund traffic circulator, including trolleys.” The funding is under Measure M2 Project V, a half-cent sales tax used to fund transportation projects. Staff reported that “grant guidelines are currently being finalized by OCTA staff and will be completed by December.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Staff said Tuesday night that if the City Council authorizes an application for funds in January, the city could consider partnering with the city of Dana Point.

“Interest has been expressed by many of the passengers this past summer to provide trolley service to Dana Point since it has many attractions including the Dana Point Harbor, Doheny Park, and the beach,” staff reported. “The city of San Juan Capistrano is scheduling a meeting with representatives from the city of Dana Point to plan a route and stops that will serve both cities.”—Andrea Swayne and AJ

School District Hears Charter School Proposal THE LATEST: At Wednesday night’s Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting, the Orange County Academy of Science and Arts (OCASA) presented a petition to the board to create a charter school within the district.

During the presentation, OCASA representatives said they’ve gathered hundreds of signatures and have held a half-dozen parent information sessions across the district. They presented goals for the school such as a focus on an exploratory, integrative STEAM curriculum; ethnic and socioeconomic diversity among students; and having the school accessible to lowincome, underserved students, of which they want to comprise 25 percent of the student population. During the hearing, Trustee Gila Jones questioned whether that population would be adequately reached with the school’s current outreach plan.

(Cont. from page 3) The school’s projected enrollment is 255 students K-8 in academic year 20162017, 330 students in 2017-2018 and 375 students in 2018-2019.

According to the California Department of Education, Proposition 39 requires that school districts “make available, to all charter schools operating in their school district with projections of at least 80 units of average daily attendance (ADA), facilities that will sufficiently accommodate all of the charter’s in-district students, and that facilities be “reasonably equivalent” to other classrooms, buildings, or facilities in the district.”

OCASA’s Proposition 39 application submitted to the district states that, “Based upon the needs of the charter school and the residency of the projected student enrollment” OCASA would like to locate its facility “within the attendance area of San Juan Elementary school in San Juan Capistrano or within the attendance area of Las Palmas Elementary school in San Clemente.”

However, when asked if OCASA’s intention is to occupy a current school site, San Clemente resident Kapil Mathur, lead petitioner for OCASA, replied that the charter school’s intent is to “secure a private facility.” He said once a lease is signed, they may withdraw the Prop 39 application.

“Our plan is to lease a private facility to use as the school,” Mathur said. “We do not plan on using an existing school facility.”

During public comment on the hearing, 11 people spoke in favor of the charter school, with a couple dissenting viewpoints. Sally White, president of the Capistrano Unified Education Association, said she was glad to hear that OCASA doesn’t intend to take over a neighborhood school site, but doesn’t see a need for more choice.

“Our schools obviously offer STEM and we have great arts programs,” White Page 4

said. “I don’t think we need more diversity or more choice, and I’m really tired of schools being targeted, so I would just say enough and be careful.”

WHAT’S NEXT: According to OCASA’s proposal, the district is required to express any objections about charter school attendance projections in writing on or before Dec. 1, and the school must respond to the objections by Jan. 2, 2016.

OCASA then expects a written preliminary facilities proposal from the district on or before Feb. 1, and the school has until March 1 to respond with any concerns or counter proposals. A final notification regarding the space to be given to OCASA is required prior to April 1.—AJ

I-5 Freeway Construction Update in San Clemente THE LATEST: Over the next several weeks, crews will be performing daytime piledriving activities along Avenida Pico next to the southbound I-5 freeway, according to an Orange County Transportation Authority press release. The work will take place intermittently between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays throughout December. Crews will begin driving steel piles to support the new portion of the Avenida Pico bridge footings.

City Council, residents split over San Juan Creek Trail extension, changes in limbo

I

t’s been a long road for the San Juan Creek Trail extension—a 1,000-foot dirt stretch of a multiuse trail on the east side of town. The trail runs along San Juan Creek and is adjacent to the incoming Oaks Development, which includes 32 homes along with an equestrian facility.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved renovations to the multiuse trail in conjunction with The Oaks development in 2014—this included a Class 1 paved bike trail and an unpaved multiuse hiking/biking/equestrian trail that would complete the gap in the San Juan Creek Trail system. Bicyclists otherwise have to ride a Class 3 narrow lane along Ortega Highway, often accompanied by semi-trucks, to get from Reata Park back to the creek trail, which ultimately leads to Doheny Beach.

The trail extension is developer-funded, so the only costs the city incurs will be the trail’s maintenance.

Stuck in the Mud Upon approval of the development and the trail improvements, the City Council kicked back the trail design to the Trails and Equestrian Commission in order to gather input about the best design moving forward. Discussion of the 1,000-foot connector, which quickly turned into an issue of contention between the commissioners, staff and residents who spoke in favor of connecting the trail with a paved path, went on for several months. During this time, commissioners discussed the order of the trails (which trail should go on the creek side) while questioning the need for a bioswale (which is required by California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA), asphalt on the Class 1 bike lane, a buffer and other elements. The majority of commissioners ultimately wanted to keep the berm as is, and worried that the changes would set a precedent or trend for adjustments to other trails throughout town.

City staff advised the commission during this time that the law prohibits any

changes to a project that’s been approved by the City Council with a tract map filed.

Staff asked for a recommendation to take to City Council between essentially two designs for the trail—bike trail on the inside or the outside.

At their Nov. 5 meeting, the Trails and Equestrian Commission eventually approved, with a 3-1 vote with one abstention, to recommend to the City Council the construction of the San Juan Creek Trail Extension with the Class 1 bikeway being aligned adjacent to the Oaks development, elimination of the mulch buffer, grading of the multiuse/equestrian trail kept to a minimum and installation of a bioswale on the outer edge of the trail, closest to the creek.

However, during a special meeting held shortly after, the commission rescinded the vote and ultimately ended up recommending that City Council leave the trail as is.

Commissioner Gail Zukow later submitted correspondence to the City Council, saying “keeping the berm as is will hopefully slow down some cyclists and make

the mixing of bikes and horses a little less dangerous.” Commissioner Renee Ritchie also wrote to the council, noting ideas such as using crushed stone and resin-based stabilized material rather than asphalt for the Class 1 bike trail.

At the City Council’s Nov. 17 meeting, the majority of the council members agreed with commissioners that more research needed to be done into the safety of the trail. Councilman John Perry, who noted that he researched the issue of horse safety online, said it’s impossible to change a horse’s behavior and added that he thinks good bike etiquette doesn’t happen “very often.” Councilman Sam Allevato countered that a horse’s behavior on a trail is a matter of training.

The council also showed interest in having the interim city manager hire an expert in horse trails to analyze the safety of the proposed (and previously approved) design. However, Councilwoman Pam Patterson commented that she preferred the city manager not be the one to find an expert due to the possibility of him having some sort of hidden “agenda,” while Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson noted that “erroneous” things have happened before.

After a handful of failed motions, the City Council finally agreed to bring the discussion back on Jan. 19 with a 4-1 vote, Councilman Sam Allevato opposed. The council did, however, ask that the developer be able to continue with his work with the exception of the trail in the meantime.

Following the discussion, Tim O’Grady, developer for The Oaks project, said he’s eager to see what will happen from here.

“We stand ready to have the council make the decision and we’ll see where it goes,” O’Grady said. “It’s frustrating, but I’m appreciative of the council making a motion to at least extend it and not penalize me while they work through the issue.

Obviously there are a lot of viewpoints associated with it, so we’ll see where it ends up. I think the council has a good grasp of the situation, just different opinions.”

What Riders and Cyclists Think A rider from Mission Trails Horse Stables, with friends on both sides of the issue, said on a recent afternoon out on the trail that she feels the multiuse trail is currently dangerous with cyclists speeding all around; however, she feels the trail is better left as is.

“These cyclists come zipping up, and they never holler, they never say we’re coming on your left, coming on your right, they just come whipping through,” she said. “They’re pretty rude and obnoxious actually.”

She said she hasn’t had issues with cyclists because her horse is older and used to the action, but she worries about equestrians with younger horses.

“The whole setup itself is not good. If the horses spook we have nowhere to go,” she said. “We’ve all gotten along really well anyway, so why are we changing it?

Another Mission Stables rider, John McGlinn, of San Juan Capistrano, said he’s fine with the trail changes. When asked if his horse has had issues around bikes, he responded: “Nah, he’s easy with bikes.”

“Some are skittish—they are what they are,” he added. “But then you just stop and let the bike go through.”

San Juan Capistrano resident Delia Seaman was walking her dogs, Charlie and Honey, along the trail on a recent weekday morning. When asked what she thought about the new design of the trail, Seaman said she thought it would help not only connect the city’s vast trail system, but would bring more people to Reata Park to enjoy the gardens, which she described as an “undiscovered jewel” due to the fact that many of her neighbors didn’t even know about it.

Seaman said she’d like to be able to ride the trail on her road bike to avoid the risk of getting hit on Ortega Highway.

“People are using it anyway, might as well make it a bit safer,” she said. CD

Toy Drive and Bake Sale to Benefit City’s Adopted Marines A toy collection to benefit the children of San Juan Capistrano’s adopted 1st Battalion, 11th Marines is underway. Help support the 1/11 by dropping off new, unwrapped toys in the toy collection bin at City Hall or the San Juan Capistrano Community Center during business hours now through Dec. 15.

Star Motors to Host Annual Holiday Celebration Star Motors, a local automotive repair business, is inviting the public to a Holiday Celebration and Art Reception on Dec. 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free and includes an opportunity to meet California artist Juan Peña, wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and giveaways.

Peña’s artwork has been displayed on the walls of Star Motors since June; this closing reception marks the end of his show. A portion of the proceeds from art sold during the event will be donated to the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center, a San Juan Capistrano nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horserelated programs. The event was hosted by San Juan Capistrano resident Marine Sgt. Lucas Dyer and his wife Jessica, with Project 22 co-directors Doc King and Daniel Egbert, who reside in Los Angeles, also in attendance.

Project 22 details how King and Egbert have dealt with issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder as combat veterans.

The directors describe their mission as restoring “a warrior culture that supports holistic healing and life-long personal growth, while empowering veterans to serve as community leaders and mentors.”

The film details their 6,500-mile crosscountry journey to raise awareness of the high suicide rate among veterans while also providing hope to service men and women. Recent statistics show that 22 veterans take their own lives every single day. The duo interviewed researchers, healthcare providers and veterans during their trip—many of the people they encountered had either contemplated or attempted suicide. The film shares alternative sources of healing and hope that don’t rely on conventional medicine, such as meditation, music, art, yoga and interaction with animals.

Dyer said he was encouraged to host a showing in San Juan Capistrano as he has personally dealt with PTSD. Dyer said he utilizes writing to help process his thoughts and emotions and was happy to raise awareness of veterans’ issues in town.

“People were amazed that this epidemic is going on,” Dyer said. “They hear a lot about veteran suicide, but they don’t understand why. Veterans have gone through a lot and don’t know how to cope, but the reality is that medications are leading to catastrophic events.”

Letters to the Editor HERE COMES LARRY KRAMER AGAIN —Jack Chestek, San Juan Capistrano In case you forgot, or if you are new in town, Larry Kramer wants you to know he is the only water expert in San Juan Capistrano.

Let’s sample some of Kramer’s expertise. Recently he stated in The Dispatch, “… your (water) refunds are not some ill-gotten gains the city received because of ‘illegal’ tiered-water rates.”

This comment is basically one big fat juicy lie.

Kramer goes on to say, “The money (refund) eventually has to be paid back from the water fund and you will pay for it.”

Let’s see if I understand this remark.

Kramer expects me to repay my refund for being overcharged because the refund came from a surplus of sewer funds.

What Kramer left out was the surplus of sewer funds came from residents being overcharged for sewer service. Note that sewer rates were reduced on July 1 because of excessive reserves.

Kramer wants residents to know the long-term effects of the illegal water rate lawsuit against City Hall “will make most of you wish this lawsuit had never been filed.” Sorry, I have no clue as to how long “long-term” is or what the “effects” will be. Sounds to me like “sour grapes” or a childish threat.

Several years ago, Kramer had the opportunity to use his one vote as a city councilman to comply with a court order or vote to defy the court order. In my view, Kramer’s vote said screw the court order, screw the judge and screw the town’s residents. Let’s raise water rates again.

I also know it’s a fact that Kramer has approved $23.6 million dollars of stuff for the “Water Factory,” also known as the Groundwater Recovery Plant, during his watch. He can’t show a penny of benefit to residents today. That’s $23.6 million of stuff wasted that came out of the pockets of this town’s residents.

Our forefathers never sought to evict the church from society and they would be horrified to know that this is happening today.

George Washington believed, “Religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

The United States Constitution did not inhibit public displays of faith. Public worship was welcomed and church services were held in the U.S. Capitol and Treasury buildings every Sunday. The day after the First Amendment was passed, Congress proclaimed a national day of prayer and thanksgiving.

Even non-Christian founders thought religion essential. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 states: “Religion, morality,

and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”

The United States Constitution—which prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion—has been redefined to restricting religious expression.

This change clearly violates the amendment’s next clause “impeding the free exercise of religion” and then the clause, “abridging the freedom of speech.”

People today want to control what we say, prohibiting our free speech. They want to remove God and religion, which was never the intent of the separation of church and state.

City Councilwoman Pam Patterson was expressing her right to religious freedom and free speech during her Sept. 1 invocation. These are things our founding fathers fought and died for. This is the very essence of what makes us American.

Pam Patterson was voted into office and she has every right to open the City Council meetings with a prayer. Historically, this is how meetings started. If you don’t like her conduct, just don’t vote for her at the next election. But in the meantime, please do not bully or threaten her right of free speech. It is so important that we fight to keep these freedoms. Who knows what they will take away from us next.

Recycle Your Coffee Grounds as Fertilizer

N

ot only is coffee a great drink, but it is also a wonderful tool in the garden. Coffee comes from the coffee plant, which originated in Ethiopia.

Once brewed, it still contains lots of nutrients that can be put back into the earth.

When we take coffee plants out of the ground, we are taking away the nutrients from the soil as well. It is a good idea to put these nutrients back once the coffee is brewed.

Many people in coffee shops, restaurants and homes who brew coffee throw out their coffee grounds. This sounds a bit selfish, doesn’t it? With so many coffee drinkers in the world, we should be able to give back to the earth what we took away from it. Some of the girls in our troop collected coffee grounds from local shops and planted them in different parks, business gardens and our own homes.

They recycled over 600 pounds of coffee grounds in just a few months.

3. Let the coffee grounds dry out just a bit.

4. Cover the coffee grounds with leaves and mix altogether.

5. Finally, start using the grounds as fertilizer for your plants, trees, flowers or shrubs around your home or neighborhood.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll notice the improved health of your plants within days.

At the Movies: ‘Mockingjay, Part 2’ Leaves Audiences Hungry

he popular franchise that propelled Jennifer Lawrence to superstardom now comes to an end after four years. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games book trilogy has yielded four film adaptations starring Lawrence as anti-heroine Katniss Everdeen, a character that made archery cool again and set forth a new wave of girl power for young audiences.

After the success of the first two movies, and the underwhelming Mockingjay, Part 1, does Part 2 end on a high note?

Following Part 1, all hell breaks loose with Katniss (Lawrence) set on assassinating President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in retaliation for the fatalities he’s caused and for brainwashing her beau Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) into hating her. On her team are close friends Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), Cressida (Natalie Dormer) and Pollux (Elden Henson). President Coin (Julianne Moore) initially supports Katniss’ efforts to defeat Snow and then with the promise of her own power, becomes corrupt—an even more immediate threat.

Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Philip Seymour Hoffman reappear as Katniss’ mentors. Mockingjay is considered by fans the weakest of the three books, so one would hope the movie(s) would be an improvement. Not exactly. While Part 1 felt like a filler television episode, Part 2 is disappointing as nothing much happens, leaving the end result an uneventful and unsatisfying conclusion following so much built-up drama and action. McGraw said he likes to foster creativity in his employees and is proud to employ local families and community members in his shop, with half of his 13 staff members working full-time.

Marsha Morgan’s Road of Life Transgender bus driver talks life and work in Capistrano Unified School District

Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a twopart series about transgender policy in the Capistrano Unified School District and the people it affects. s a member of the Navy, courage is a required trait. For Marsha (formerly Marshall) Morgan, that attribute has been exemplified in another way.

A San Clemente High School graduate and current San Clemente resident, Morgan is a former sonar technician with the U.S. Navy and has been a bus driver for Capistrano Unified School District for 17 years—and she is currently making her transition from man to woman.

Morgan said the reception of her transition has been mostly positive.

“Last year I was presenting as male, but there were some subtle, feminine hints,” Morgan said. “Some kids started calling me Ms. Marsha. Recently, a group of high school students came to the front of the bus and asked me if I preferred male or female pronouns. I had to praise them six ways from Sunday for that; I told them how appropriate it was.”

Morgan said seeing a voice coach to help her speak more feminine is part of the psychological transition.

“What you have to understand is I bus 80 kids around the district, and the difference between this voice,” she said, speaking in an authoritative and masculine tone, “and this voice,” changing to the quieter, feminine tone, “is one gets their attention and the other just kind of makes them giggle.”

Morgan’s public transition is fairly recent. When she was a child—identified as a boy—her mother found a stash of feminine items, which led to her being shipped to a military school in San Diego.

“The intent, I suppose, was to drum out the female in me,” she said. “I’m 53 years old, and I knew I was different since I was 8 years old; I’ve been transgendered since I was 8 years old,” Morgan said.

Being separated from her family, Morgan was very depressed at the military school and was eventually sent back to home.

Later in life, she discovered that getting the transitional operation would be affordable.

“Once I knew what could be done, a transition-type surgery, I always wanted it but knew it was always out of reach and I wouldn’t be able to afford it,” Morgan said.

“As soon as I found out that a transition was possible, I was ready to go. There was no second thought about it. This is the true me.”

Morgan said the most recent CUSD health insurance plan would enable her to start the transition to becoming the woman she wanted to be. Gender modification surgery can cost more than $100,000 for the whole process.

In order to qualify for the surgery, Morgan had to see a psychiatrist who would have to diagnose her with gender dysphoria.

The recovery from the surgery takes a bit of time.

Naval Experience Although her first experiences with military life were not enjoyable, Morgan said she felt the call to serve her country.

She entered the Navy at 25 years old as a sonar technician, achieving high marks in her classes. She spent six years as a Sailor.

In doing so, she was able to pick the position of her choice.

Shortly thereafter, she was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 for six months during Operation Desert Storm.

Aboard the U.S.S. Topeka submarine, it was her responsibility to track ships within the gulf. What made it extraordinarily stressful, Morgan said, was that the Persian Gulf isn’t deep enough to avoid detection.

Desert Shield. The U.S.S. Topeka was the first American submarine to enter the gulf, and Morgan received an expeditionary medal for the mission. She also received medals for national defense, a Southwest Asia medal and one for expert marksmanship.

Although she enjoyed the Navy and succeeded while enlisted, Morgan said she was “a little too civilianized” by the time she joined to remain there for a lifelong career.

She eventually achieved the rank of E-5 Sonar Technician Second Class.

Morgan said she was glad she enlisted in the Navy but wished she had entered earlier in life. Although she was nearly discovered as a transgender person in the Navy, she said her fellow sailors weren’t bothered by what they found.

“At one point, my stash of feminine items had been discovered,” she said.

“I came up with a very quick and clever explanation. I said they were ‘trophies.’

I had a submarine reunion a few years ago and presented as Marsha. They were all comfortable with it and some of them were not at all surprised by it.”

CUSD Policy Amendments Morgan said she has experienced some discomfort while working in CUSD regarding bathrooms.

“I anticipate that in any (public) restroom,” she said. “I was using the men’s room because over 17 years, the people I’ve

worked with have known me as Marshall. I don’t believe there were complaints; there were concerns.”

Morgan’s driver’s license now designates her as a woman, allowing her to use the women’s bathroom, but that has taken some of her coworkers some time to get used to, she said.

CUSD is currently in the process of amending its policy to reflect the needs of its transgender students and employees.

Currently, Morgan said, there isn’t much that covers employees except for state and federal anti-discrimination laws.

The most recent amendment proposal discussed by the CUSD Board of Trustees adds in language specifically relating to gender identity anti-discrimination policies.

Eventually, Morgan said she came to a mutual understanding with the district to use the men’s room before she makes her full transition.

“The school district has been great about it; they’ve had no qualms about it,” she said.

Her CUSD identification still reads Marshall because the Orange County Superior Court needs to grant the name change, which should happen Jan. 6.

Morgan has received awards from CUSD for outstanding demonstration for driving and was nominated for classified Employee of the Year, a certificate of recognition from the county, in addition to receiving other commendations.

Family Ties Morgan married a woman who had a daughter from a previous relationship.

Admittedly, Morgan said the relationship was already strained and the blossoming of Marsha had destroyed any hopes of reconciliation. The couple is in the process of a divorce.

“My biggest mistake was not coming out to my wife or then-fiancé before getting married,” Morgan said. “Now that I had a family, I thought I could put Marsha away for good—didn’t happen. My wife discovered Marsha about a year into the marriage. She was tolerant so long as she didn’t have to see it or deal with it.”

Morgan said she started going public with her transgender status in 2005. She said she wanted to share her story to continue the discussion of accepting transgender people.

“It brings it into the limelight,” she said. “Anyone I know that is of the transcommunity is 30 to 40 miles north of (San Clemente). I’ve been told by my friends in support groups that I should start something down this way.”

Other social situations such as going to the beach and developing a longer, feminine hairstyle due to the hormone replacement are adjustments to the physical aspects.

“I’ve never had a nasty look or stare down here,” Morgan said. “The worst I’ve had is a chuckle or something like that.

ast February, San Juan Capistrano travel agent Ann Ronan, asked if I’d be willing to host a four-day “Tom Blake Loving Life after 55 Cruise.”

There was one stipulation: I’d have to give a seminar at sea.

My partner Greta and I love cruises; we thought it would be fun. Besides, it was a long time till November and I’d have plenty of time to prepare for the seminar.

And then November arrived so quickly.

This was one large cruise ship: 952 feet in length (more than three football fields), 17 levels, three swimming pools, 3,000 passengers and a crew of 1,100.

There were 13 in our group on the cruise, mostly strangers to each other. On the first night, we met before dinner to introduce ourselves. Over the four days, I realized how unique and interesting each person was. At the seminar, everyone had

a chance to speak. Here’s a sampling of what was learned: Travel agent Ann and her husband Ted on the glue that brought them together: Both are avid Boston Red Sox fans.

Kathy, a widow from Dana Point on first dates: “I now limit them to a walk or coffee.”

Phil from Anaheim: “I’ve been on Match.com and two other sites. Of the last 15 dates with different women, only one looked as advertised. The others’ profile pictures (were) way, way off.”

Marie of Dana Point: “I was married for 65 years. I am now 94 and still driving.

I was the first woman secretary at the Pentagon.”

Ceil and Stuart, not married but in an

exclusive relationship: “We live in the Washington, D.C. area but in different states, and met online. While we live close by but with the traffic around D.C. it can take a long time to get to each other’s houses.”

Lela is from Idaho Falls, Idaho but winters in Mesa, Arizona: “Dating in Idaho is difficult, particularly when I was caregiving my Mom.” Iris, also from Idaho Falls and Lela’s friend in her post-cruise email to me: “I want to tell you how much I enjoyed the cruise and loved meeting everyone. I have made some lifelong friends.”

Lillian, Orange County: “In online dating, you’ve got to have a thick skin. Don’t take rejection personally.”

Tina, the youngster of the group, kept us active: “Come on guys and gals, let’s take in the evening entertainment shows, even if they start at 10 p.m. You can sleep in tomorrow.”

Greta and I (Dana Point) shared: “We met at Tutor and Spunky’s Deli when Greta ordered a fresh carrot juice. While she was waiting, I asked if she’d like to have dinner. She replied, ‘That would be lovely.’ That conversation took place June 24, 1998. We’ve been together ever since.”

The group agreed that the most important factors to look for in a relationship are honesty, truthfulness and a person who sincerely wants a mate.

Older singles need to get out and enjoy life. This group did that for four days.

Yoga Pants or Heels?

Daily dress code struggles exist for both fancy moms and frizzy moms

Y

oga pants are my mom uniform.

I throw on a tank top, pull on my trusty stretchy and oh-so-comfy yoga pants, and I’m ready to go in under five minutes. They hold everything securely in place. I’m no eye shadowblending, hair-curling, accessorizing-daily diva. But, being ready in under five could never happen without yoga pants involved.

Workout wear is the socially acceptable way to look like we slept under a bus. It says, “I’m sporty and active and maybe even just exercised.”

There are moms who look jaw-dropping amazing every day. I am not one of them. I belong to the get ready as fast as possible, without looking 100 percent homeless in the end, club. If I’ve showered, blow dried and have slathered on under eye concealer to hide evidence of my sleep deprivation, I’ve gone to great lengths to prepare myself.

You know about those moms. They look like they’re ready for date night all day, every day. They’re perfectly polished, coifed and

manicured. They appear drop dead gorgeous. How do they have the time to dress up like runway models every single day?

Their hair perfectly curled in those long, loose ringlets. I’ve never mastered that tress technique. Their FOUR KIDS AND A DOG outfits look like they’re

And those heels. Women everywhere know that heels are not our friends. Heels, after a few kids, are miserable. Heels, postkids, hiking into the elementary school for an hour of helping in junior’s class, or enduring a PTA meeting, are sheer hell. At school pick-up time, I watch as they float along in their teetering heels. The sidewalk is their runway as they strut their stuff.

Hand in hand with ‘Lil Susie, their hair is blowing ever so slightly in the gentle breeze and not a trace of the uncomfortable misery can be seen on their faces. But

I know. I know they’re suffering. Extreme effort and sometimes even pain is required to uphold the latest trends.

As I sneak glances at them, I try to not to feel shame. I should’ve taken the time to blow dry my hair. It’s crazy frizzy and I look I’m channeling Tina Turner. Not cool.

I’m now on the three-week plan at my hair salon. Unwelcome grey roots shoot up every three weeks. Seriously? I’m not ready to look 76 years old quite yet. No way can I get in there every three weeks to have them painted into oblivion though. Shoot.

I forgot to wipe off all those smears off my black yoga pants. What is that all over them, anyway? No make-up. I’m officially organic today. Teeth? I’ll brush extra carefully at bedtime. No close talking for me.

No matter how we’re packaged on the outside, we all share similar mom struggles. Our toddlers throw their spaghetti on the dog and our mouthy tweens complain about pretty much everything.

Laundry is the enemy. Coffee and wine are our cohorts. We endlessly remind kids

to clean up their messes. We spend too much money at Target and forget what even prompted us to stop there in the first place. We lie awake in bed at night worrying about if we’re doing it all right.

We overschedule and undercook. We try to strike just the right balance within our traveling circus act. We love our little monsters—who make the title “Mom” possible—so much it hurts.

What I’ve learned about fancy moms and frizzy moms, is that we’re all doing the best we know how. (And sincerely hoping we don’t lose our marbles trying).

Litter with Leaves Redefine fall garden maintenance by utilizing fallen leaves in your yard

A

s a kid growing up in Central California, our classic 1950s neighborhoods were designed with colorful avenue trees and distinctive large trees that would simulate an East Coast landscape.

Our East Coast relatives used to laugh at us saying that California didn’t have any seasons—everything stayed green all year long. Not so, said my father after raking up piles of yellow, orange and red leaves produced by our deciduous “maple” tree—really a Liquid Amber tree. Every fall, year after year, my father, instead of bagging the leaves up to be hauled away, would pile the DIRT THERAPY leaves in the garden.

These majestic deciduous trees in our landscape produced massive leaf litter, which my father learned to work with in lieu of fighting it. Instead of the traditional scraping of leaves off the lawn and gardens, bagging them and sending them to waste management, my father would gently rake the leaves and place them in the garden beds and under the trees. Little did I know as a young child that this act of “leaf” kindness was not out of laziness but provided beneficial nutrients to the plants while serving a purpose for living and nonliving things in the ecosystem. As I have learned, there is no waste in the natural world.

Unfortunately, we see leaf litter as a problem in our community, when it actually plays a rather important ecological role.

Believe it or not, leaves are secretly at work in the garden and in our parks. Leaf litter

produces carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other inorganic compounds as it decomposes and replenishes the soil. During the decomposing process, life is occurring in the fungus, which is comprised of tiny harmless critters that attach themselves to the plant roots, helping the roots thrive.

Leaves provide homes to a variety of living things, from bacteria to the largest macro invertebrates. Leaf mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature for organisms living under the leaf litter during winter—some critters use the leaves as a blanket. This is the perfect home to invertebrates; butterflies laying their eggs on the leaf litter use it as a nursery.

Caterpillars often times seal themselves within the leaf as a blanket. Birds use the leaf litter to forage for worms, insects and snails. By raking up these leaves, you may be disturbing these small habitats of beneficial insects that could be fluttering around your garden next spring.

Although removing leaves is a daily occurrence in suburban and urban homes and community parks, we can make some alternative choices to not remove the leaves. We can leave the litter in the garden as mulch, allowing nature to do its part in providing a healthy ecosystem.

Here are some tips to consider: 1. Check with your community regarding rules for raking leaves when they fall.

2. Gently rake leaves into larger piles.

3. Use leaves as mulch around large trees, shrubs and garden beds.

4. Layer leaf litter in your compost pile.

5. Utilize leaf mold (decomposed leaves) for soil drainage and enrichment.

And by depositing leaves in the garden, you’ll have more time to invest in play this fall. My dad had it right after all—father does know best.

Veterans Celebrated During Tribute in San Juan Capistrano

esidents and veterans of San Juan Capistrano gathered Nov. 11 for the city’s annual Veterans Day ceremony, hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Serra Post 3801, at Veterans Park in downtown San Juan Capistrano.

Art Hasselbrink, commander of the VFW Serra Post 3801, addressed the crowd before presenting speakers such as Mayor Derek Reeve, Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson, Councilman Sam Allevato and Councilwoman Pam Patterson, the city’s liaison to the 1/11 Marine Adoption Committee. Councilman John Perry was also in attendance. Toward the end of the tribute, veterans from all branches of military were invited to the podium to share their stories and thoughts regarding Veterans Day. “We have many events in San Juan Capistrano, but few are more meaningful than the one we have today, on Nov. 11,” Reeve said during his address. He wrapped up his speech with a plea to the

Helen Antoinette Lopez Peña Helen Antoinette Lopez Peña of San Diego, age 95, died November 13 peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen was born and raised in San Juan Capistrano, California.

At the time of her death, she was the oldest living native of San Juan Capistrano.

Helen was the third of five children born to Juanita Hunn and Arturo Lopez. All four of her siblings, Arthur, Claudine, Joseph and George, predeceased her.

Helen attended school at the San Juan Capistrano Mission.

She started working at the age of thirteen selling pottery at the Mission. Helen was extremely proud of her hometown. She visited the Mission every year. Her childhood home is located in the historic Los Rios area of San Juan Capistrano.

Helen met her husband, Eugene Peña of San Diego, when she moved to San Diego for work.

Eugene was a WWII and Korean War submarine veteran. They were married for 67 years before his death in 2011. They had five children – Richard, Gary (Lorie), Melanie (Mark), James (Silvia)

and Gene Andrew. Richard predeceased her in 1981.

Helen had many jobs in her life. As a young woman, she worked as an assistant to a family in La Jolla and she was a waitress at many different restaurants including Ramona’s Kitchen in Old Town now known as La Piñata. Her favorite job was as a nurse’s aide for the retired nuns at Mercy Hospital.

Helen loved a good party, she loved music, she loved to dance, she cooked the best Mexican food (her homemade tortillas were famous!), but most of all she loved her family. She leaves behind her four children and eight grandchildren Gary Alan Peña, Dustin Peña, Amber Peña Hendrix, Brandon Peña, Maxwell Perry, Devin Clark, Jessica Peña and Richard Peña and one great grandchild, King Hendrix. She also leaves behind her two wonderful caregivers Guadalupe DeLeon and Mariaelena Ramos.

There are no two finer people.

They were our angels.

Defense Lifts Warriors Past Tartans in CIF-SS Quarterfinals

The St. Margaret’s High School football team faced a familiar foe when they took on Saddleback Valley Christian in the second round of the CIF-SS East Valley Division Championships on Nov. 20th.

Last year, the two teams met in the East Valley division semifinals and St. Margaret’s went on to win the game, and the CIF-SS title.

This year was a different story, as second-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian won the game 28-23 behind big performances from its defense and junior quarterback Cade Henjum.

SVC will host Crean Lutheran in the semifinals on Nov. 27 at San Juan Hills High School at 7 p.m..

St. Margaret’s got off to a rough start.

On just the fourth play from scrimmage, junior quarterback George Krantz threw the first of four interceptions on the night.

St. Margaret’s gained momentum back as they scored a touchdown and a field goal on their next two drives, while its defense held SVC in check, to take the lead at 10-7.

Despite going up by three points, the Tartans just couldn’t hold on. SVC answered back with a four-yard touchdown run by senior Ryan De Viso late in the second quarter and the Warriors recovered the ensuing onside kick. Six plays later, a 22-yard Henjum pass to junior receiver Savai’i Cravens gave SVC a 21-10 lead at

look around the San Juan Capistrano prep sports landscape as the 2015 fall prep season comes to an end: The Saddleback Valley Christian girls volleyball team captured its third straight CIF-SS Championship title on Nov. 21.

In the CIF-SS Division 3A championship match, the Warriors defeated Templeton in five sets at Rio Hondo College, 18-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12.

The Warriors were led by senior middle blocker Shannon Geraty, who recorded 22 kills in the finals.

In 2015, the Warriors won the San Joaquin League title, going a perfect 10-0 in league play.

JSerra’s Andrew Burkhardt outpaced the field in the Division 4 race at the CIF-SS Cross Country Championships at Mt. SAC on Nov. 21. Burkhardt, a senior, won the Division 4 individual title with a time of 15:03.4, nearly seven seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

As a team, the Lions placed seventh in the Division 4 race.

JSerra tennis player Jadie Acidera punched her ticket to the next stage of postseason competition on Nov. 23 by winning two matches in the CIF-SS Girls Individual Tennis Sectionals. The Lions doubles duo of Mary Kaffen and Zoe Kaffen also advanced through the sectional tournament. CD

Six plays later, Krantz ran it in from 11 yards out to cut the lead to four. The Tartans defense then forced an SVC punt and looked to be in prime position to take a late lead. Instead, Krantz threw his third errant pass that resulted in an interception and the ball was returned to the seven-yard line. De Viso found the end zone for the second time on the following drive, putting SVC up 28-17, for what was the decisive score.

“We knew that if they put the ball in the air we were going to make plays,” SVC head coach Brendan Chambers said. “(Our) secondary has been good all season, and I knew they were waiting for this game because (St. Margaret’s) are going to put the ball in the air.”

St. Margaret’s scored with 19 seconds left to cut the deficit to three, but an onside kick attempt by the Tartans was easily recovered by the Warriors.

SVC will face Crean Lutheran in the East Valley semifinals. Crean Lutheran, the Academy League co-champions, defeated Calvary Murrieta 28-10 in the second round. Crean Lutheran scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. SVC defeated Crean Lutheran 40-21 back on Sept. 3.

IN OTHER SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO FOOTBALL NEWS: San Juan Hills High School senior quarterback Patrick O’Brien made his

commitment to Nebraska official on Nov. 19, as the highly touted recruit signed his financial aid paperwork during a ceremony on campus.

O’Brien sent in his paperwork ahead of schedule in order to be eligible to take part in the Cornhuskers’ spring practice season.

O’Brien will end his high school career as the most prolific passer in Stallions history. As a two-year starter under center, O’Brien completed 70 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,988 yards and 44 touchdowns. He owns every school passing record.

O’Brien finished his high school career showing that he is more than just a passer.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pounder also ran for 1,266 yards and 21 touchdowns during his career. His 6,254 total yards of offense sets him at the top of the all-time Stallion ranks.

“Patrick and this senior class built on the foundation of those who came before them and continued to raise the competitive standard for our football program and we are forever grateful for that,” Stallions head coach Aaron Flowers said in a press release. “Nebraska fans have a lot of reasons to be excited about the future.”

O’Brien guided the Stallions to an 8-3 overall record in 2015, including a 2-2 effort in the South Coast League. The Stallions reached the first round of the CIF-SS West Valley Division Championships for a second straight season.

The Nebraska-bound senior was an Elite 11 Quarterback finalist last summer and competed in Nike’s prestigious The Opening, a football showcase event that features 166 of the top prep football players in the country. –By Steve Breazeale
