TITANIC II The world might very well witness a 100-year-old ghost rise from the depths when the Titanic sets sail once again. Clive Palmer, an Australian real estate billionaire, has put plans into motion that will see CSC Jinling Shipyard in China build four luxury cruise ships, one of which will be the Titanic II. The new ship will be almost a perfect replica and every bit as luxurious, only with 21st Century technology. It will even feature the familiar

CLOSER THAN EVER four smoke stacks of the coal-powered original, even though they will be purely decorative on the diesel-powered reincarnation. Palmer expects Titanic II to complete its voyage to New York in 2016.

or some of us, the honours just don’t come quick enough. Perhaps the job you want requires a qualification that is too hard, too expensive or too late for you to obtain. Perhaps you just feel that after years of effort and success your name is still unadorned by the honours you deserve. We seem to be drowning in questionable qualifications. Ellen Tshabalala, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, Grace Mugabe’s PhD and Pallo Jordan’s, though it pains us to see him in this company. All the missing master’s degrees of Sicelo Shiceka, former Sanral chairperson Tembakazi Mnyaka, Carl Niehaus. Riah Phiyega’s dashing medals. But of course it’s not just us; it happens everywhere. Last month a US senator was stripped of his master’s for plagiarising his research paper. Norwegian politician Liv Løberg was sentenced to 14 months in jail for claiming medical qualifications. And remember Scott Thompson, the Yahoo CEO who graduated in accounting but claimed he had a degree in computer science? In a company with thousands of comp. sci. graduates, he got away with it for years. Claiming a qualification you don’t have seems very high-risk when

it’s so easy to buy one from degree mills. Blowing smoke about your three-month degree from the Oxford College of Nuclear Physics and Homeopathy (PO Box 214, Riviersonderend) will retain a little more of your shredded dignity than a short statement from a real university you didn’t graduate from. That’s a grey area that can be spun out in the CCMA, the courts or the media for years. Ask British nutritionist, author and television host Dr Gillian McKeith, PhD, “or to give her full medical title, Gillian McKeith,” says UK Guardian journalist Ben Goldacre. After witnessing several of her explanations of nutrition and human biology in the media, Goldacre and others became suspicious of her qualifications. With a PhD by correspondence from an unaccredited institution – the nowdefunct Clayton College of Natural Health in Alabama – the British Advertising Standards Authority prohibited her from calling herself ‘doctor’ in television advertisements for her products. Goldacre also investigated the standing of McKeith’s certified membership of the

American Association of Nutritional Consultants, and had fun doing it. He bought the same membership online in the name of his dead cat Hettie, for $60. Hettie’s

certificate now hangs proudly in his bathroom, McKeith’s credibility close by. If you think you can learn a profession in a few minutes’ Internet browsing, the Universal Life Church will be happy to help. As an ordained minister of the church, you will have the legal status to officiate at

marriages, baptisms and funerals in most US states. No study and no particular religious or spiritual beliefs are required, all it takes is one minute and a decent Internet connection. Over 20 million ministers have been ordained by Universal including, apparently, Sharon Stone, Goldie Hawn, and Conan O’Brien. An ordination certificate makes a nice gift, though it doesn’t seem to have done much for the career of my Labrador, Leo (good idea, Ben Goldacre). If you want an even

more imposing certificate you can become a doctor of divinity or a bishop, both with official certificate ready for hanging (only $32.99). You can buy a much richer fantasy than mere qualifications. There’s been a roaring trade in feudal titles for centuries; a few years ago The Economist carried one or two ads for baronetcys and dukedoms in almost every issue, and they’re now online too. Buy a Ukrainian castle (visit the site first to make sure it exists and isn’t the local parliament building, and for heaven’s sake have it checked out by a plumber with strong nerves) and with it a noble title as lord of the manor.

WWW.BUSINESSCLASS.CO.ZA BC 13

Business Mock-Up FINAL FOR PRINT.indd 13

2014/12/01 1:51 AM

The big trade is in British titles. In the eighties it was American millionaires who turned up at windblown Scottish villages under the impression that

they’d bought the right to be called “my lord” and that the locals would be falling all over themselves to do so.

The locals did indeed fall all over themselves, and when they’d stopped laughing had no trouble selling their lordships’ cameras and watches in Glasgow. Today Russian billionaires have replaced the Americans as the prime target. In some cases, a ‘broker’ will legally change the buyer’s name to add ‘Baron’ as a first name, but what they’re usually buying is a small plot of land. A very small plot of land, perhaps one square metre. The theory is that as registered owners they are entitled to call themselves lord of the manor. There’s plenty of gaudy paperwork and an annual “manorial ball” to attend in black tie. There’s no castle, no hot and cold running chambermaids, and nobody who isn’t on your payroll will call you ‘my lord’, but few will really care

enough to question the ‘Right Honourable’ on your business card and it may work wonders in pick-up bars in smaller Free State towns. It’s rather like buying a personalised number plate. You’re not really a baron or a duke, of course. “I will put it very simply. You cannot purchase a genuine British title, with one exception: the feudal title of a Scottish baron. And you certainly cannot buy a peerage title,” says Richard, 7th Earl of Bradford, who is so annoyed by the market in false heritage that he runs a website called faketitles.com. “Scottish Feudal Baronies fetch a mighty price,” he reveals. “The Barony of MacDonald was up for sale at over £1 million.” Titles and orders from Montenegro, Romania, and empires that ceased to exist in 1918 are cheaper. They don’t come with land or your own peasantry but the medals are spectacular, and who could resist the

Albanian Order of Scanderbeg or our personal favourite, the Bavarian Order of St. George for the Defense of the Immaculate Conception. Becoming a prince, princess or count obviously confers greater powers and, like a gun license in Nevada, requires a seven-day wait. It’s worth it, though: these purchases will “upgrade your personal or company’s image through the use of this inheritable Title”. For an extra R13 000 you can have an Investiture Ceremony in a 1000-yearold castle. Your lordship will be guilty of nothing more than vanity. Even with more important things like degrees, there comes a point when the qualification isn’t the issue anymore. Whether Ms Tshabalala did or did not graduate, it may be possible for someone without a B Comm to chair a major state enterprise – even one as large, complex and politically important as the SABC. But the job needs good judgement and a commitment to the public interest. Can we expect that from someone who is willing to see millions of Rands of public money wasted rather than giving a simple yes or no answer? What Ms Tshabalala is revealing of herself to the entire nation is far more damning than whatever she’s withholding.

Gold-mining shares may be only for the fearless investor, but the physical stuff could offer attractive alternatives.

WORDS: MARC HASENFUSS

bullion market, one might well wonder why goldminers are not raking in glittering profits. For SAbased mines, there is the considerable advantage of incurring the production costs in a weak rand and selling the mined commodity for dollars. What’s more, the dollar price for gold – while not at an all-time high – is holding at fairly robust levels… at least for some of us older investors who remember the bullion price at under $300 in the early ’90s.

deemed marginal. All things considered, it’s no wonder gold bugs are increasingly looking to physical gold as an asset class that holds defensive attributes against market volatility (as witnessed in the early part of October). Nothing feels quite as reassuringly tangible as a Krugerrand in the hand – the coin weighing seemingly more than the ounce measure. But there are two distinct disadvantages to hording gold coins. Firstly, Krugerrands attract

by the investor, but the underlying instrument is underpinned by the bullion price. If you can live without actually owning a Krugerrand, the NewGold Debenture is a convenient and cost-effective option, attracting only minimal brokerage fees. Another interesting alternative is offered by SA Bullion, a Krugerrand investment specialist headed by long-time gold acolyte Hilton Davies. The company’s BullionGold Facility is an investment

For unrepentant gold bulls, the longerterm picture is rather scary in terms of the damage to portfolios.

The hitch lies in bringing the coveted yellow metal to the surface. Goldminers, generally, have to dig deeper, at a greater cost, using a workforce (particularly in SA) that is demanding in its wage needs and is prone to embarking on disruptive strike activity. In short, it’s getting expensive to seek and dig out gold… perhaps to a point where many previously viable endeavours are now

substantial fees on buying and selling, which can ultimately negate returns. Secondly, the Krugerrand – unlike most shares – does not generate a dividend. It simply lies in your safe, hopefully picking up value. Professional punters, these days, are probably more likely to seek out the NewGold Debenture, an exchange traded fund linked to the bullion price. No physical gold is owned

T

he old adage about a particularly lucrative enterprise being a “goldmine” might shortly have to be revisited. Owning a gold mine, it seems, may be more a curse than a blessing – at least, judging by the truly horrible erosion in shareholder value seen over the last three years at the JSE’s three mainstay producers of bullion. Anglogold Ashanti – arguably the default stock pick in the gold sector – has nearly halved from its 12-month high of R209 on the JSE this year. So has Harmony Gold, with controversy-hit Gold Fields not faring terribly well either. For unrepentant gold bulls, the longer-term picture is rather scary in terms of the damage to portfolios. Anglogold Ashanti was trading close to R400 on the JSE at the end of 2011, while Harmony and Gold Fields were both over R100. That’s a lot of capital wiped out. Of course, bombed-out share prices do present opportunities for fearless investors. And yes, there are investors snapping up stock in all three big gold counters at this very delicate juncture. Standing back from the

platform that offers an investment in legal-tender Krugerrands. The investor – using a lump sum or monthly debit-order facility – actually buys a Krugerrand (or a portion thereof), but SA Bullion offers a vaulting, insurance and custody service. One advantage is that Krugerrands are bought and sold at wholesale market rates, with no huge

fees attached for the services – including a guaranteed buy-back on all Krugerrands at full market value. Davies reckons gold presents a very attractive alternative to equities and bonds, worldwide. But he also stresses that it, additionally, presents a huge attraction as an alternative to the rand. In a recent quarterly report, he pointed out that physical gold – unlike the gold-mining shares we mentioned earlier – had been a superb investment for South African investors. He noted that in the last 10 years, gold price appreciation has produced annualised returns of 19% for rand investors. That’s not too shabby for investors looking to hedge the local currency. He said that in “technical price action” terms, gold had recently formed a huge base in the $1 200 to $1 300 price range, following the big retreat from $1 800 in 2011. “This makes gold a low-risk investment proposition in a world of high-risk investment propositions today.” Davies argued that gold has taken a three-year breather in a generationlong upswing. “Now would appear to be a very attractive entry point.”

THE TUXEDO

Beyond BLACK Who says a tuxedo always has to be James Bond black and white? Or that you can bust out a dinner jacket only at weddings and balls? With our guide to DEFORMALIZING FORMALWEAR you’ll be taking parties to the next level and wearing your DINNER JACKET TO ACTUAL DINNERS. With the right jacket and accessories you can DIAL IT UP OR DIAL IT DOWN. Here’s how to deconstruct the tuxedo.

HINK OF THE TUXEDO jacket as the highest expression of the blazer. It has subtly elegant details that set it apart from a suit or sports jacket: contrasting lapel, satin accents, covered buttons. That amount of flair can go a long way toward putting together a look that has a sense of occasion. When it comes to wearing a formal piece of clothing in a less formal setting, the best trick is not to wear black. A little colour, pattern or cool fabric makes it easy to dress down. This Alexander McQueen jacket has so much personality, you can keep it simple with the rest of your outfit.

Bow Flex If you wear a bow tie the right way, the disarming and charming accessory ranks up there with puppies as a reliable way to get women to talk to you. But think dandy, not nerdy. This bow tie is handwoven from silk and feathers and is guaranteed to inspire at least one conversation. If you’re not that much of a peacock, go with something more subdued. But if you do, learn how to hand tie one for a more rakish appeal and to avoid the prom-night clip-on look. Monsieur Jean Yves bow tie, available at Saks Fifth Avenue

Flower Power If you’re going to an event where a tie would look a little too uptight and you’re tired of the whole pocket-square thing, consider wearing a lapel flower. If you’re thinking boo to the boutonniere because it’s not quite manly enough, think again. These fabric flowers are perfectly undersized (about

4cm wide), come in dozens of color combinations (from basic black to flashy) and add just enough pop to a jacket lapel. The go-to brand these days is Hook + Albert. Clockwise from top: Carmel, Aurora Red, Green Sheen. hookandalbert.com

- the TROUSER PRESS A tuxedo can be deconstructed any number of ways, and that includes the pants. Tuxedo pants can elevate a simple black blazer. The details on traditional tuxedo pants are flattering for a number of reasons: They typically have vertical pockets, which elongate your form and make you appear taller. The same goes for the black satin stripe down the side. And maybe the coolest thing is that they’re the original Sansabelt: Adjustable side tabs negate the need for a belt, which can bulk up an otherwise sleek look. PASS ON THE POCKET

Avoid wing-collar tuxedo shirts when dressing down. Go with a semi-spread to show off your bow-tie skills or to accommodate a larger halfWindsor knot.

A true dress shirt doesn’t have a pocket on the front. Pockets say “business.” You want your evening look to say “pleasure.“

FLAT FIT

NO STUDS

High arm holes and a snug fit across the chest keep your shirt from getting rumpled. A bunched-up shirt is inexcusable in a semiformal setting.

Those little black studs that come with rental tuxedos scream “rental tuxedo.” This shirt has mother-of-pearl buttons, making it appropriate to wear with a suit.

BIB OPTIONAL

LEARN FRENCH

We like that the bib on this shirt isn’t pleated. It adds just enough detail without going overboard. A plain-front dress shirt would also work.

If you want to wear cuff links, you’re going to need French cuffs. And you’re going to want to see them, so tailor your jacket to show up to 2.5cm of sleeve.

A Business Mock-Up FINAL FOR PRINT.indd 20

TUXEDO SHIRT doesn’t need to be all pleated and extra fancy to look dashing. And technically you don’t even need it to be a tuxedo shirt. A proper dress shirt can work, provided it has the right details and cut. Be sure to avoid sport shirts and button-downs. PUMP IT UP

THE FOUNDATION of any outfit is the shoes. And the fastest way to undermine an upgraded formal look is to finish it with down-at-the-heels footwear. A pair of well-polished black cap-toe oxfords always works, but you might want to consider going old-school with tuxedo slippers (also called pumps). We know that doesn’t sound very masculine, but once you read the pictograms on this pair of velvet slippers from Stubbs & Wootton you might be convinced.

- the PERFECT SQUARE

Don’t go for multipeak folds when pairing a pocket square with a tuxedo jacket. Subdued is the order of the day. The classic, or presidential, fold is sleek, elegant and easy.

Cool It With the Cummerbund When deconstructing formalwear, you should leave the cummerbund in the drawer. It is one of those items that look just plain goofy out of a truly formal context. We’re lukewarm on the cummerbund in a traditionally formal context too, as it presents more problems than it solves: You need to continually adjust it throughout the night, and it can make your belly sweat – never a good look.

STEP 1

Think Cuff Links Cuff links are the closest thing to man jewellery that we can get behind. In more-casual settings, silk knots are fine, but we like the elegance and versatility of these mother-of-pearl cuff links. The multicoloured iridescence makes them the perfect match for any number of jacket colours and styles. David Yurman black motherof-pearl cuff links, davidyurman.com

Adjustment Bureau

Take a freshly ironed pocket square and lay it out on a flat surface. You can’t go wrong with a white cotton square.

Fold it in half vertically, taking care to match corner to corner. If you want a crisp look, iron the crease.

Fold horizontally and slide it into the pocket, stitched side up. Adjust the fold so it sits well and doesn’t slide down.

MARGARITA HIDE THE BLENDER, DITCH THE MIX. HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT RIGHT.

If you’ve sworn off margaritas because of a traumatic headacheinducing experience, don’t blame the drink, blame the drink maker. Chances are whoever made it used tequila that wasn’t 100 percent agave spirit, added corn-syrup-based pre-bottled margarita mix, then blitzed it in a blender to jump-start the pain with some brain freeze. To offer you a kinder, gentler reintroduction to the pleasures of summer’s greatest cocktail, we

consulted Cape Town’s Employees Only co-owner Dushan Zari who has sampled dozens of excellent margaritas in Mexico in the name of research. “This version is quite classic,” says Zari. “We added agave nectar for body and mouthfeel. It belongs in the daisy family of cocktails, which use a spirit, lime juice and triple sec. In Spanish, margarita means ‘daisy.’” Muy aitentico, muy delicioso. Welcome back to summer.

THE ULTIMATE RECIPE 60ml 100 percent agave tequila 20ml Cointreau 15ml agave nectar 30ml fresh lime juice Shake hard in a cocktail shaker for five seconds. Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

AGAVE NECTAR

COINTREAU

Agave nectar (aka agave syrup) adds more body and a richer sweetness than sugar-based simple syrup.

Always squeeze the lime juice to order for each drink. Old lime juice oxidizes and tastes off.

Key, or Mexican, limes are juicier, tarter and more aromatic than standard or Persian limes.

The deep, sweet orange flavours of Cointreau add more complexity than run-of-the-mill Triple Sec.

MARTINI MOMENT THE MARTINI – THE COCKTAIL THAT HEMINGWAY WROTE MADE HIM “FEEL CIVILIZED” – IS GETTING A FACE-LIFT.

A

lthough the first martini recipe that called for an olive was printed in 1888, today’s new wave of premium gins and vodkas uses garnishes that range from cucumber to oysters. Papa would probably approve. As a correspondent, he was reputed to have gone through World War II with twin canteens, one filled with gin and the other with vermouth. Contemporary martinis call for gins such as Old Ray, a 110-proof time bomb that costs about R500 a bottle. Ninetyfour-proof Broker’s, another relatively new gin, contains 10 botanicals – the most prominent being lime, coriander and juniper. Although Broker’s label states it is “the perfect basis for a gin and tonic,” the clean, juniper-thick flavour is

just right for a martini misted with vermouth. The removable bowler hat on the bottle top is a cute marketing trick. While the original martini was made with gin, vodka is just as popular, thanks to fallout from the Cold War period. Now the silver bullet takes aim at one of Russia’s newest vodkas, Kryshtal Charodei. Both the water used for distillation and the finished vodka are filtered by a two-week soaking in crushed flint found only in the Republic of Belarus. This natural filtration creates a vodka that is thick, oily and aromatic. At the opposite end of the spectrum, one of Norway’s exports, Christiania, distilled six times, is one of the lightest. James Bond called for both vodka and gin in his martinis (three ounces Gordon’s gin, one ounce vodka, half an

ounce of Kina Lillet vermouth, garnished with a slice of lemon peel). We all know he liked his martinis shaken, not stirred, as Bond felt that stirring bruised the gin. On the other hand, W Somerset Maugham believed that “martinis should always be stirred, so that the molecules lie sensuously on top of each other.” Just how much vermouth makes a martini is a question that can break up friendships and barstools. When Americans were getting their martini fixes in London during Prohibition, the American Bar at the Savoy called for a threeto-one ratio of gin to dry vermouth. Today, less is more. Peter Dorelli, head bartender at the Savoy, dispenses vermouth with an eyedropper. Colin Field, head bartender at the Hemingway Bar in the

Hotel Ritz in Paris, states “We’ve used the same bottle of vermouth for the last seven years.” Churchill preferred to “glance at a bottle of vermouth across the room” while he poured his gin. But whatever amount of vermouth you use, pour it at room temperature. Chilling dulls its delicate fruitand-floral balance. It also may not be poured at all. Many martini recipes call for such exotic ingredients as sour apple liqueur. Here’s how to create some of the best of the best.

Gravel Quarry Cabernet Glen Carlou’s vineyard-in-aquarry Cabernet Sauvignon recently garnered a gold medal from Mundus Vini, one of the most hotly contested competitions on the international vineous calendar. The gravel allows for excellent drainage and concentrated fruit. It’s a good example of a site-specific new world wine or – as the cork dorks might say – a wine with a sense of place. Glen Carlou is offering one case of this

spectacular wine. To enter, email your name, age, and address to wine@busclass.co.za Glen Carlou also make the best Zinfandel. You can expect to find red berries, tea leaf, cedar wood and violets on the nose. The palate is at once juicy and tangy yet dense with fine tannins and velvety textures. The 09 – one of the Cape’s best vintages – is their last Zinfandel but they still have some stock left.

Strandveld Cape Agulhas producer Strandveld – from our most southern vineyards – has produced a rare double of Veritas Double Gold and 2012 Platter Guide 5-Star for their 2010 Sauvignon Blanc. This is a cool climate style from wind-induced lowyielding vineyards and pairs very well with oysters.

MOTORING

NEW PROSPECTS

PROSPECTING FOR

NEW SEGMENTS WORDS MARK SMYTH

A

THE RUSH TO FIND GOLD IN NEW SEGMENTS OF THE VEHICLE MARKET

motoring humour website recently ran a story in which it declared that old Porsche 911s were worth more than gold. The story might have been having a dig at stressed-out commodity traders, but the reality is that it might not be so wrong. Every automaker is trying to produce a vehicle that’s as successful as the 911, to find their own goldmine, as it were. The motor car has been with us for well over 100 years now, and in that time there’ve definitely been a few goldmines.

You can go as far back as the Model T, when Henry Ford realised that he could make more money than the Reserve Bank and he only had to use one paint colour: black. This success was later emulated by one of the most famous “Goldwagens” of them all, the Volkswagen Beetle. It was the people’s car, and millions were sold around the world, making a huge pot of gold for the German company. The British auto industry might have left its massproduction heydays long behind, but in its prime it was also producing a few famous nuggets.

The Austin A40 was so popular that Nissan, a part of a fledgling Japanese auto industry, acquired the licence to produce the car in order to start its path to success. Then there was the Mini, a vehicle which not only proved to be a goldmine for British Leyland, but today probably produces a far higher return than bullion for new owners BMW. In the Mini, the company has found not only a vehicle, but a whole lifestyle product. Forget gold analogies; the Mini has become a licence to print money. Not every vehicle can become a true goldmine,

but in recent years we have seen an increase in prospecting in new areas. BMW is possibly leading the charge here, having decided the acronym SUV was just not appropriate, and coined the term SAV, or sports activity vehicle, for models such as the X3. Actually, BMW probably tops the list when it comes to being the most creative with the design of new models. The X6 is about to be revised, having charged into the market like a German bouncer to define the idea of an SUV coupé. Then it decided it could make a fastback version of the 5 Series and call it a GT, a hideous-

looking vehicle with lots of practicality and no right whatsoever to be called a GT car, really. It’s done the same with the 3 Series recently, but that’s surprisingly good, in the absence of the even better Touring models. Then there’s Mini, a goldmine all of its own. But gold can be moulded into all sorts of things, and the days of the diminutive, cheap runaround are long gone. There’re more new genres in the Mini range than probably any other manufacturer on the planet. The Countryman is no longer the woodtrimmed van of the

30 BUSINESS CLASS DECEMBER 2014

Business Mock-Up FINAL FOR PRINT.indd 30

2014/12/01 1:52 AM

original; instead, it can be a full-on 4x4 Mini. There’s even one in the Dakar Rally, although of course that’s not really a Mini at all underneath. The list seems endless, with the convertible, the roadster, the coupé, and the incredibly pointless Paceman. They all sell, and the pile of bullion in Munich keeps on building. Mini is more of a brand today than the original ever was, and its cool factor lives on. Then there’s the crossover. Now this really has become a goldmine. There were early attempts at the genre, such as the Subaru Outback, Audi A6 Allroad and Volvo XC70, but these were all based on station wagons. It was only when Nissan came along with a vehicle that looked like an SUV, but was the size of a family hatchback, that the crossover genre was truly born. Since then, Nissan has been one of the most dominant players in the game, and has just launched the latest version of its Qashqai – but today it has far more competition as everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

The list of crossovers is endless today, with models such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque, recently launched Mercedes GLA and the superb Peugeot 2008. Next year Lexus will try to dig into the market with its origami-inspired NX, and we’ll see a host of smaller crossover models, such as the funky Citroen Cactus and possibly the Renault Captur. The lines are blurred in some places regarding what is an SUV and what is a crossover, but the segment is rapidly expanding as we seek the looks of an SUV, but in a package that is more suited to an ever more crowded urban environment. In Europe this need is mostly taken up by the station wagon or estate car, but in South Africa there still seems to be an aversion to this genre. It’s a pity, because the estate car could suit most people perfectly and there are some brilliant examples. However, even this segment has seen a few attempts to create something a bit shinier than the norm. The Mercedes CLS Shooting

Brake is a good example. It’s a brilliant car with good looks and lots of space, and you can have it in a truly dynamic AMG version, but it’s not a shooting brake. It’s a station wagon, but there’s no gold to be found in them there station wagons, so Merc gave it a much more shiny title to attract the bling-seekers. Actually, Merc had already started prospecting when it launched the CLS. A fourdoor coupé, everyone cried? No such thing, the experts answered. The experts are quite right. By definition, a coupé can only ever be a two-door,

but four-door coupé just sounds so much sexier than telling everyone you have another sedan, but with slightly better looks. And there’ve been some great examples, such as the latest CLS and the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé – not forgetting the Porsche Panamera. The thing about the genre, and the Panamera is a good case in point, is that it allows you to create a large family hatchback, sedan or coupé-type vehicle that seats four people, has decent boot space and drives really well when you find a mountain pass. The same is also true with Audi’s take on the shortened station wagon and fourdoor fastback, which it groups under the term Sportback. Getting back to Porsche, though, and if you thought the 911 was worth more than gold, then how about a goldmine that might even give the Mini brand a run for its money: the Cayenne? When the company launched the first true sports SUV, some sniggered; some

just appreciated that they could get an SUV with a Porsche badge to suit their status; and some actually got in and drove it. The first generation was a bit dumpy in the looks department, but it was great in the twists and surprisingly good off-road. If you wanted to go into the back of nowhere and prospect for gold, the Cayenne could do that, and then get you back to a dinner party wearing the gold around your neck. When it comes to prospecting for gold, there’s no doubt BMW is at the front of the line at the mining rights office, but almost every car company is part of the rush or trying to find the next big thing themselves. Speculating, as we know, is half the fun, so what will it be? The single passenger urban commuter vehicle? What about the motorcycleengined sports car that is both fast and fuel-efficient? We will have to see, but one thing is for sure, there is definitely more gold to be found.

hile the supermodels strutted their stuff on the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week, there was plenty of automotive fashion to be found at the Paris Motor Show. There were a number of supermodels too. Some, like Claudia Schiffer, were at the show to promote models such as the new Opel Corsa, but some of the supermodels were of the four-wheel variety. Lamborghini probably stole the show in this regard. Many were expecting a Lambo SUV, but instead the company revealed the Asterion, a four-door model that has a few echoes of the sexy Miura about it, just a hint of Aventador and, of course, space inside for the average two-adultstwo-kids-Lamborghiniowning family.

Like many a catwalk supermodel, it has also declared that it wants world peace, with a hybrid drivetrain that uses the engine from the Huracan, mated to a couple of electric motors, allowing the company to claim that the Asterion will use only 4.2 litres per 100km of fuel, and emit just 98g per kilometre of those horrible emissions. Will Lambo build it? Well, the company says it is just a concept car, but Ferrari proved with its FF that people want a bit more practicality in their supercar, so expect to see a full production model sometime soon. Talking of Ferrari, the Paris show saw the unveiling of the 458 Speciale Spider, but this was barely noticed as the supermodel catfight played out between

outgoing company boss Luca di Montezemolo and the man who effectively ousted him, Fiat chairman Sergio Marchionne. There was lots of “he was mean to me” going on, but the reality seems to be that Marchionne marched in and Montezemolo marched out. It will be interesting to see whether anything changes at the famous Maranello company. Another supermodel that had visitors to the show queuing up to take selfies with it was

the new Mercedes-AMG GT. Smaller than the SLS, it is the company’s true attempt to take on the Porsche 911. This is most evident in the rear, which could have been penned by Porsche’s own design department. There might not be any of the drama that came with the gulling doors of the SLS, but the company is promising lots of drama in the performance stakes, with a twin turbo V8 producing 340kW, and a more potent S version with 375kW. Is the Bentley Mulsanne Speed a supermodel? That could be a question for debate, but the vehicle revealed at the Paris show is certainly a more super version of the regular

Mulsanne model, if that helps your thinking. With a 6.75-litre V8 producing 395kW and a massive 1 100Nm of torque, it definitely makes all of the right promises when it comes to super-luxury performance. Interestingly, the show was perhaps less about performance and more about fashion this year. The hot theme seemed to be personalisation, with many of the urban runabouts from Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota and Smart offering new ways to individualise the citydweller’s urban transport. With so many outfits to choose from, perhaps one day we really will see cars cruising the Paris Fashion Week catwalks.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT EXERCISE AND TRAINING

In the first of a series of articles from sports science professionals, Business Class brings you some myth busters about getting fit and staying fit, courtesy of Prof Elmarie Terblanche, Chairperson of the Department of Sport Science at the University of Stellenbosch. Prof Terblanche writes about research of a practical nature and addresses questions that are of relevance to athletes at all levels.

Have exercise misconceptions prevented you from starting an exercise programme? Clear up any confusion and let these exercise tips improve your workout routine.

1

MYTH # .

I WILL BURN MORE FAT IF I EXERCISE LONGER AT A LOWER INTENSITY So you’ve heard about the “fat burning zone.” In other words, if you want to lose weight, you need to exercise at

a low intensity (a low heart rate). What few people realise is that you actually burn the highest proportion of fat while at rest (around 70 percent of your energy comes from fat) and by now we know that being a couch potato doesn’t make you thin. The most important

focus in exercise and fat weight control is not the percentage of energy coming from fat during exercise, but the total energy cost of exercise, or how many calories are burned during the activity. The faster you walk, step or run, for example, the more calories you use

per minute. Therefore at low exercise intensity, you need to exercise for a very long time (far more than an hour per day) to match the total energy expenditure of a high intensity workout. There is a growing body of research supporting the use of high-intensity

interval training for fat loss. This form of “cardio” takes less than half the time (typically 12 to 20 minutes) of traditional long duration cardio and leads to better results, i.e. faster and greater fat loss, more rapid improvements in fitness and better exercise adherence.

MYTH # . GO HARD OR GO HOME!

If this is your kind of thinking, you will never start or maintain an exercise programme. There is overwhelming evidence from research that one should rather do something than nothing, and that every little bit helps. For example, regular walking or gardening for as little as an hour a week has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. You will not necessarily be able to run a marathon or bench press 100kg, but both your body and soul will be much happier.

3

MYTH # .

I CAN GET MY DREAM BODY IF I JUST TRAIN HARD ENOUGH

Both weight gain and loss is impacted by many factors, including dietary intake, your environment and genetics. All individuals will not lose the same amount of weight on the same exercise programme. Some individuals will actually respond very little to a regular exercise regimen in terms of losing fat weight (these individuals are called non-responders). You have all seen runners finishing the Comrades marathon not looking the part. Now you will be mistaken if you think they have not trained hard and long hours to finish that race, because nobody can just step up to the starting line and run more than 90km.

This is good evidence to show that exercise per se doesn’t make you thin, especially if you’re not endowed with the right genes. Losing body fat is a complicated matter (if not, we wouldn’t have rising obesity rates), and it goes far beyond a regular training programme. The good news, however, is that research has shown that being overweight and fit is much better than being thin and sedentary, as fitness is directly related to a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Furthermore, regular physical activity is one of the most important factors for successful longterm weight management.

illegal substances such as anabolic steroids, growth hormone and many other designer drugs. There is just no other way. The truth is that strength training approximately two to four times a week, doing a variety of exercises for the major muscle groups, will help women to achieve a lean and toned appearance, and strengthen bones and joints. In fact, since women are more prone to osteoporosis, it could be said that women might actually benefit more from weight training than men.

Research has shown that most people misjudge both the number of calories burned during exercise and the number of calories in food eaten.

4

MYTH # .

WEIGHT TRAINING MAKES WOMEN BIG AND BULKY

Weight training can make you bulk up – if you have the XY chromosome and it is your distinct intention to build huge muscles. Even then, it is no easy feat to gain muscle. It takes time and effort, a carefully compiled scientific training programme and finely tuned nutritional strategies. For women, however, these sound strategies will not be enough. The reason being that women have nowhere near the required testosterone levels to put on any significant amounts of muscle mass. If you do see women with bulky muscles, you know for sure that their dietary habits include

6

MYTH # .

PASS THE PUFF PASTRY, I WENT TO GYM TODAY You are in for a big surprise. You will probably gain weight, as the exercise will increase your metabolism and give you a healthy appetite. Research has shown that most people misjudge both the number of calories burned during exercise and the number of calories in food eaten. So never use exercise as an excuse to overindulge. If your goal is weight loss, you must learn to eat more without increasing your calorie intake. This means healthier choices of foods, smaller portion sizes and eating regularly during the day.

7

MYTH # .

IF YOU’RE NOT DRENCHED IN SWEAT, YOU’RE NOT WORKING HARD ENOUGH

5

MYTH # . I’M WAY TOO OLD FOR THIS

Age is just a very bad excuse. Studies have shown that it is never too late to start working out – you can reap benefits at any age. Exercise can help reduce the risk of

bone and muscle diseases and help enhance daily functionality even later in life. This means you will be more independent as you get older, not to mention being admired by your grandchildren for completing the odd fun walk/run every now and then.

The harder you work out, the more calories you'll burn within a given period and thus the more fat you stand to lose, but how much you sweat does not necessarily reflect how hard you're working. Some people tend to sweat bucket loads while others don't sweat much at all, regardless of their fitness level or degree of exertion. Your sweat rate is related to your body weight, your genetic makeup and external factors such as environmental

conditions and clothing. Exercising in extremely hot weather or in a plastic "weight loss" suit will indeed make you sweat heavily and lose weight immediately. That lost weight, however, is almost entirely water and the kilos will return when you replenish your fluids by drinking after the workout.

8

MYTH # .

SIT-UPS BURN THE BOEP NOT... A… CHANCE.

There's no such thing as spot reducing or burning fat off a particular body part, it is physiologically impossible. When you lose body fat, it comes off the body in a predetermined genetic pattern similar to how you gain the fat except in a reverse order. When your body is in fat burning mode, fat comes from all over the place – your arms, calves, thighs, abdominals, face, forearms, big toe, etc. If spot reducing really worked, people who chew gum would have skinny faces. Spot toning, on the other hand, does work, and resistance exercises will strengthen the targeted muscles. Look at the dominant arms of professional tennis players, and you’ll see the difference in their muscle tone and size. The best method for reducing overall body fat is the age-old tried and true combination of cardiovascular training, resistance training and

FITNESS

limiting your calorie intake. Results come from doing these three things with persistence and consistence.

MYTH # .

MORNING WORKOUTS ARE BETTER FOR YOUR METABOLISM

Proponents of this piece of wisdom say that if you exercise in the morning, you jump-start your metabolism and therefore burn more calories during the day. There's absolutely no evidence that this is true. The best time to exercise is the time you want to do it, and are most likely to do it, whether it's morning, afternoon or evening. The only exception is for those with high blood pressure. Research has shown that your blood pressure remains low for up to nine hours after an acute exercise bout. This phenomenon is called post-exercise hypotension. So for those with hypertension, exercise in the morning is advantageous, as it will keep your blood pressure low during the day when you need it most.

drink should be beneficial for those who exercise. It contains sodium, which helps the body to retain water and keep you hydrated, and it contains sugar which your body burns for energy. However, contrary to what you

may think, very few people exercise hard enough to sweat away significant amounts of sodium. There is even some research that suggests consuming popular sports drinks during or after exercise does very little to add

to sodium levels in the body. Furthermore, one has to train for more than two hours continuously before your carbohydrates stores in muscles will start to run low. Thus, for the average Joe, plain water is all you need.

The best time to exercise is the time you want to do it, and are most likely to do it, whether it's morning, afternoon or evening.

BRAIN FOOD WORDS: TANYA GOODMAN

Summer is here, and whether you’re casting your own lines, heading to the harbour to get the catch of the day fresh off the boat, or have your favourite fish monger at your neighbourhood market, now is a great time to introduce seafood into your regular weekly menu.

Fish is a low-fat high quality protein, filled with Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin). Fish is also rich in calcium and phosphorus and a excellent source of minerals. Here’s how eating fish can help improve your overall health and prevent a number of diseases.

11 HEART

Seafood is low in saturated fat and high in Omega-3, which can both protect the heart from disease and lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood.

22 BLOOD VESSELS

Eating fish can improve your circulation and reduce the risk of thrombosis.

33 JOINTS

Recent research has found a link between Omega-3

fats and osteoarthritis and eating fish as a regular part of a balanced diet has been shown to ease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

As well as being a source of many vitamins, seafood provides the body with many essential nutrients, including iodine, selenium, zinc and potassium. Iodine is important for the thyroid gland, and

selenium makes enzymes that can help to protect us from cancer.

66 LUNGS

A number of studies have indicated that fish and shellfish may help to protect our lungs. Not only can seafood relieve the symptoms of asthma in children, but it has shown signs of preventing it.

FOR THE DRESSING • 1 tbsp cumin seeds • 3 tbsp olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • ½ tsp sugar • 10g parsley, chopped 1. Spread the Harissa paste over the salmon, heat a pan and add the oil.Pan-fry pieces of salmon until desired doneness. Remove fish from the pan, set aside and allow to cool. Toss the halved tomatoes into the pan and allow to cook until skins just wrinkle, about 1–2 minutes, remove and set aside. 2. For the dressing: place the cumin seeds in a small frying pan, dry fry for 1 minute or until fragrant, remove and grind, using a pestle and mortar. Add the ground cumin seeds to a bowl and whisk in olive oil, stir through lemon juice, sugar and parsley. 3. To serve: place the pasta and all the remaining ingredients on a platter, toss to combine, pour over dressing, season and top with the fish. Sprinkle with flaked almonds.

large part in preventing depression; research has highlighted links between low Omega-3 levels and a higher risk of depression.

88 SKIN

Not only does Omega-3 help to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV damage, but eating lots of fish can also help with the symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

99 BOWEL DISEASE

Evidence suggests that a diet rich in fish oils can help to protect us against serious inflammatory bowel diseases (BD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

101 BRAIN

The human brain is almost 60 percent fat, with much of this being Omega-3 fat. Probably for this reason, research has indicated that people who eat

plenty of seafood are less likely to suffer dementia and memory problems in later life. DHA, an Omega-3 fat found in seafood, has also been linked to improvements in children’s concentration, reading skills, behaviour, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). 50 BRAND STORY

TIMELESS

TAG HEUER CARRERA CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

H

ave men and cars, and they will race. When the Mexican government completed the Panamerica highway, a swath of almost 3,400 kilometers connecting north and south, they wanted bragging rights and to show the world. From this was born, in 1950, the Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race, likely one of the world’s most dangerous and gruelling open-road endurance competitions. From its start, it attracted racing fanatics from every class, and in the first years, F1 drivers shared the road with rich adventurer amateurs. More than one book has been written on the magnificent five years

of racing until the race was shut down because of safety concerns. By then, 27 drivers had lost their lives, and only a third of entrants typically finished the race. Tales and myths of daring bravery and exceptional driving at the Panamericana became part of racing folklore. In 1963, Jack Heuer, the man who is responsible for some of the most groundbreaking advances in sports timekeeping, turned his attention to the specific needs of professional motor-racing drivers. A long-time fan of and participant in the sport, he knew exactly what was needed: a wideopen, easy-to-read dial and a shock-resistant

and waterproof case tough enough for even the most intense road wear. He also had in mind the ideal inspiration: the Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race. “I first heard about the Carrera from Pedro Rodriguez at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, where I was the Official Timekeeper. He and his brother Ricardo were two of the fastest, smartest and bravest endurance drivers of all time. To hear them talk of the Carrera, which our brand’s longtime friend Juan-Manuel Fangio had won in 1953, made my imagination soar. Just the sound of the name itself – elegant, dynamic, easily pronounced in all

languages and charged with emotion. I knew then that my new chronograph was the perfect tribute to this legend.” He knew what the look and feel of the watch should be, too. Inspiration came from a range of innovative ideas, including many from early 60s modernism – the geometric purity of Oscar Niemeyer’s new architecture, for example, and the curving, sensual lines

of an Eero Saarinen building or chair, and the clean, uncluttered aesthetics of Pop-Art. At the same time, the Carrera’s iconic design values are firmly rooted in the enduring codes of motor sports, such as the black & white of vintage dashboard counters or the perforated leather gloves favoured by Juan-Manuel Fangio and his contemporaries. “I was excited by the new forms, materials and techniques just

then coming into play. We were after something that took advantage of these, that was just as new and audacious, but at the same time sober, simple and motorsportsdriven, stripped of all ornamentation, classic and timeless.” The first Carrera chronograph was the stunning black and white “Panda” edition with tachymetre. An instant must-have watch of the top racecar drivers in

Europe and America, it is now one of the most coveted watches among luxury watch collectors. Among the star pilots to wear a Carrera over the next decade were Ferrari drivers Jackie Ickx, Clay Regazzoni, Mario Andretti, Carlos Reutemann and Jody

Scheckter. Every member of Ferrari’s 1970s "scuderia," with whom Heuer had signed on as Official Sponsor and Timekeeper, received a solid gold Carrera engraved with his name and blood type. Since it has been worn by every TAG Heuer driving great: David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Alain Prost... To mark the 50th anniversary of the Carrera, TAG Heuer launched the 2013 Carrera Calibre 1887 Collection, pictured

here. The Calibre 1887 is an integrated column-wheel watch movement that vibrates 28,800 times per hour and has a 50-hour power reserve. Among its 320 components, is an audaciously reengineered version of its inspiration, the brand’s 1887-patented oscillating pinion, along with a matching blue column wheel. The oscillating pinion, patented in 1887 by Edouard Heuer, works in tandem with the column wheel, in much the same way as an automobile transmission. The column wheel,

which coordinates the start, stop and returnto-zero functions of the chronograph hand, functions like a gearbox. The oscillating pinion works like a clutch. With this collection, this legend in Swiss watchmaking since 1860, especially in the fields of chronographs and ultimate precision, has built on its active commitment in the sports world to create the most accurate timing instruments and wrist timepieces in the world. In the world of racing, split seconds count.

BETWEEN BAKKIES AND A HARD PLACE WORDS: CHARL DU PLESSIS IMAGE: GAGE SKIDMORE

I

t is the usual Saturday afternoon cliché, when the fists start flying on the rugby field, to hear some gruff TV commentator bemoaning the bad example being set for “the youngsters watching.” That, I assume, refers to the schoolboys who momentarily dropped their Duke Nuke’em video game consoles, where they were busy obliterating both inner and outer space, in order to watch grown men with hairy legs, funny pants, shoulder pads and gum guards and boots in all the colours of a gay parade brawl the living bejeezus out of each other for 80 odd minutes. Not being one to take advice on life from Chinese fortune cookies, rock ‘n roll lyricists or a gruff TV sports commentator, one should, however, stop and ponder the essence of the latter’s concern with the example being set when big men punch each other like schoolyard bullies. Who

are our role models in society? And when we enter the work place as managers or managed – who are we trying to emulate? The top shelves of the Business Section in our bookshops are speckled with books on business heroes, of which Donald Trump of The Apprentice fame, and Jack Welsh of General Electric seem endless. Now, if we set aside for one moment the fact that Trump should have listened to his hair stylist about that orange comb-over quaff, and also ignore the fact that his is no rags-to-riches story as our romantic minds would love to describe all nouveau riche, we are left with a man who is best known for wanting his stuff to be bigger and better. That includes his buildings and his trophy wives. Trump rescued himself from the anonymity that seems to befall ex-casino owners (anyone knows where Sol Kerzner is these days?), and revived his empire and ego with

54 BUSINESS CLASS DECEMBER 2014

a show that made it respectable to treat your employees like disposable dirt. His show’s famous sign-off line, “You are fired,” became jocular repartee amongst friends and colleagues, and gave comfort to junior and middle managers who previously might have sweated more about how telling subordinates that they were free to go their own way. In all fairness, I certainly don’t think the programme ratings of a show where the pay-off line is “You are promoted” or “You get an increase” would have been much to write home about. We seem to like our heroes somewhat nasty and tough. Chuck Norris for President? Jack Welsh presided over the world’s largest company, and made sure that he took all the credit for that. His ex-wife’s lawyer tried to keep her share of that glory alive, and Jack’s books were definitely not on family values. Not his own, nor of any of his employees, because you either joined

the fraternity or perished under Jack’s way. There are two distinct corporate leadership style to consider here – the charismatic leader, and the transformational leader. Trump, Welsh, and other success-recipe type authors seem to fall under the former. They have larger-thanlife personalities, and research shows them to be extremely narcissistic; frequently at the expense of the company and the shareholders. What we don’t see is that for every successful charismatic leader, how many failures and waste occurred in other companies where fortune did not favour these mavericks. What Welsh will also not tell you is how much of GE’s success during his tenure at the firm, which remains heavily reliant on its technology prowess, should have been attributed to earlier leadership that had the foresight to invest heavily in R&D when Jack was still in braces.

Contrary to the charismatic leadership style, the transformational leader manages to articulate a clear vision of the firm, and find ways of inspiring each and every employee to follow this vision and to feel part of something larger than their own selves. Not every situation calls for this leadership style, yet you can bet your shareholders’ last Rand that the transformational leader has much better odds at adding consistent and sustainable value to a firm than do the fragileego narcissists. So, next time when you browse around the airport bookshelf looking for pearls of wisdom by which to steer your company’s course, skip the gold and silver jacket covers on the top-shelf, bend your back right down, and search for the words of those authors who recognize the difficulty of transforming the organisation one person at a time.
