The L.U.C Collection Each part is a masterpiece The mysteriously shaped date lever springs into action, commanding the date wheel to perform an instant 11.6129-degree jump corresponding to one day. Once its task is accomplished, it takes a 24-hour break. Like every component in the L.U.C Calibre 96.13-L, each date lever is hand-decorated and finished by the artisans at Chopard Manufacture. The L.U.C Lunar One watch bears the prestigious “Poinçon de Genève” quality hallmark and houses a movement that is chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

Purity. Sensuality. Intelligence. This open-plan interior in Berlin offers ample space for cooking and socializing. It combines a wall-mounted b3 system with a bulthaup monoblock. Sleek sandy-beige aluminum panels from floor to ceiling on the kitchen wall contrasts with the texture of the brick in the dining and living area. The look and feel of the aluminum changes with the light, and introduces additional elegance and warmth to the room. Moreover, bulthaup’s unique anodizing method ensures the aluminum surfaces are exceptionally robust, and well suited for kitchen use. LOCAL ELECTIONS OUTCOME JUST THE SPRING IN OUR STEP THAT THE ECONOMY AND PROPERTY MARKET NEEDS
T
he very successful conclusion of the local government elections has, in many ways, added a spring in the step of most South Africans. We can now feel far more positive about our democracy. People want to live and invest in neighbourhoods with good service delivery and efficient mechanisms to lodge service requests – it is that simple. Voters have said as much at the ballot boxes, and buyers have voted with their wallets when it comes to property in the Cape, which now ranks amongst the most sought-after property in the country. The international and local markets, too, have reacted positively. This is not to say that we are out of the woods. Not at all. The economic outlook remains weak, a downgrade in the country’s sovereign credit rating to junk status still looms, as do further interest rate hikes; but not yet. For now, we still have plenty to feel positive about, and the outcome of the elections has given us the encouragement
that if we focus on the right things, we can move the economy forward. We have now also seen two successive Reserve Bank MPC meetings with no further interest rate hikes, and this, too, has been a boost for stability in the economy and property market. While the market remains on a fairly even keel compared to last year, there is now very little energy. Save for the Western Cape that is still benefiting from “semigration”, most other areas are now beginning to see a slow-down in activity and price growth. Nonetheless, while the market is set to remain flat for the remainder of this year, there is still plenty of activity with enough buyers to keep it ticking over. Well-priced properties continue to attract good interest, but we are beginning to see a shift with buyers showing resistance to high prices. Sellers now need to be mindful of the market forces and will need to keep their price expectations in check if they are looking to make a sale right now.
PUBLISHED FOR SEEFF BY CHAPEL LANE MEDIA
If not, then it is perhaps advisable to take your property off the market until it improves. Although the winter months have been a bit slower than what we had hoped for, we now look forward to the approaching summer months, traditionally a busier period for the market especially in coastal regions such as the Cape.

CAMPS BAY
THE HUB OF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD
T
he Atlantic Seaboard, known as South Africa’s Riviera, stretches from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on the north shore of Table Mountain all the way down the western side of the Cape Peninsula to Hout Bay. With the Atlantic Seaboard’s glistening ocean on one side and the magnificent slopes of Lion’s Head and the Twelve Apostles on the other, one is easily transported by the sheer splendour of the setting. One of the most vibrant and popular suburbs in Cape Town, Camps Bay lies just beyond the four beaches of Clifton in an exceptionally beautiful setting. The beachfront of Camps Bay is a long stretch of white, soft sand and along its length is a boulevard that forms part of a series of pavement cafes, bistros and restaurants that has earned Camps Bay its cosmopolitan character. According to PropStats, property prices in Camps Bay are on the increase, starting at R10 million on average for a freestanding home due to the demand far outweighing the supply. Staying in the much soughtafter suburb has become quite a popular choice for many visitors, who return year on year to soak up the sun and enjoy the tradition of having sundowners whilst admiring

the sunset. Homes in the upper reaches of the Twelve Apostles offer fantastic views over the Atlantic and the bay. As we welcome summer and its warm weather, we also see an influx of visitors into Camps Bay, the most popular destination along the Atlantic Seaboard during these months. In targeting this ever growing market, we are happy to announce an extension of Seeff Atlantic Seaboard & City Bowl with the introduction of SeeffSHORTSTAY. I encourage you to read the article about our new division as well as our SHORTSTAY agent, Ruth Munitz. A selection of our properties are showcased on pages 52-71. THE SeeffSHORTSTAY SOLUTION
The short term property rental market is fraught with uncertainty. For visitors to new shores, there is always some anxiety that they might not find exactly what was promised. For home-owners, it takes a certain courage to leave your most prized possession in the care of absolute strangers. The SeeffSHORTSTAY solution ensures that visitors and home-owners alike are in good hands.
“
We take the stress, risk and hassle out of the SHORTSTAY market.” So says Ruth Munitz, who heads up the latest innovation Seeff brings to the dynamic Atlantic Seaboard, V&A Marina and City Bowl property market. “We offer the home-owner the opportunity to market their property on various accomodation and travel platforms, as well as Seeff’s nationwide network. We present their property in the best possible manner in order to
optimize their income, while we also vet their guests and take care of all the logistics. We manage inventory, insurance cover and cleaning services, among others, and also make sure that arriving guests have access to a concierge, a help-line and discount vouchers, adding value to their travel experience that typically would have been tasked to the home-owner.” This is the professionalization of the SHORTSTAY rental market without the loss of a personal touch.
P R O P E R T Y PA G E S | 1 8
Frankly, if you own a home that can command R25,000 rental income per day, you are unlikely to be particularly interested in playing resident bedand-breakfast host to visitors who have dirty laundry that needs a good wash and iron. Nor to be available at all hours of the day to answer pre-arrival questions about visas or the availability of shuttle services from the airport. Why spoil your own holiday when SeeffSHORTSTAY can take care of these details for you?
PHOTOGRAPHY: HARRY BODEN PHOTOGRAPHY
360-DEGREE PANORAMIC VIEW OF OUR SeeffSHORTSTAY CLIFTON BUNGALOW: THE HOMEOWNER’S FAVOURITE SPOT.
According to Ruth, the market for short term rentals has heated up considerably, with all kinds of travellers opting for the home-stay experience instead of the somewhat clinical and impersonal atmosphere of a hotel. Scale also matters, and a home stay becomes a much more efficient affair when traveling as a family with children or as a group of friends. Yet, it is not all foreign family travel. The Cape Town SHORTSTAY market accommodates many upcountry visitors, as well as business travellers. What also happens with frequency is that a local family, who may be busy with renovations, is looking for something familiar in their immediate neighbourhood. The typical SHORTSTAY contract ranges from a week or two, up to several months at a time, with the SeeffSHORTSTAY team readily available to address any issues that may crop up. Each property is assigned its own, dedicated Property Manager. The arriving guest determines exactly how involved they may want the SeeffSHORTSTAY team to be for the duration of their stay. There are multiple add-on options, like daily or weekly cleaning and laundry, for instance, where a service can be arranged. The arriving guest receives up-to-date information on what is hot in Cape Town and how to make the best of their time in the city. And when they are ready to leave, inventory management, insurance cover and cleaning services,
all under the SeeffSHORTSTAY team’s control ensure that the home-owner moves back in without any headaches. It is often the details that make the most enduring impression. Ruth gives a few examples of how small things matter, like showing arriving guests whether the hot tap sits left or right. Or a favourite local haunt in their chosen neighbourhood. “The Seeff ethos has always been one of providing outstanding support and ensuring clients feel like family, and that whole attitude spills over to our interaction with our home-owners and arriving guests, too. One of our personal touches we are adding, is to create a 360 degree photograph of the home-owner’s favourite spot in their home and marking the picture with a red Barberton Daisy. (See Facebook: Seeffshortstay). We aim to make the experience one of a fully-functioning home-away-from-home, yet away from the duties and stress that the guest on holiday wishes to escape.” Ruth, a well-known entrepreneur, has worked with different Seeff divisions on many an innovative project since the early 1990s. Remember those big fibreglass red noses “Konks” on buildings, in order to raise money for South African Child Welfare? Or South Africa’s first full colour, 4-sided electronic billboard on the Foreshore? Those are but a few of the things that Ruth has brought to the city through the years. This time around, they are matching the best of technology,

rom the Koi pond entrance on the sea side of the road to the spacious entertainment areas, this superbly located home is ideal for corporate or elegant sophisticated lifestyle. It offers exquisite views over the Atlantic, top security, a superbly appointed chef’s kitchen, the huge master suite, sea and mountain view terraces with Hollywood pool, its own gym and an enviable wine cellar, among others. Sorry, the price does not include the wine collection! This house speaks of space and clean, open lines. Set over two levels, and with generous garden terraces, it is as if the expanse of the Atlantic flows into the house. White floor finishes in the main living area carry a wave-like theme towards the staircase, and large windows let the sunlight play deep into the house. To one side, the cheeky granite of Lion’s Head rears its majestic profile, and down below, peeking over foliage, one can see the beach people at play. This is one of the world’s top Blue Flag beaches, and it is within walking distance. It is a house built for entertainment and the easy life. It starts with a magnificent, very modern kitchen with a large island in the middle. The same theme is carried over to the bar counter in the main living space, where an eccentric stone bowl does duty under the tap. The red insets in the wall behind the bar create some dramatic effect, as do many of the angular lines within the main living spaces. Walk outside at this level onto a large porch to soak up every available inch of your view, and settle in with a glass of chilled Chardonnay to watch the sun set. The layered sandstone brick wall has a cooling effect. At the end of the day, there are five bedrooms available for guests, and the bathrooms alone could be an exhibit. Designed in glass and sandstone themes, these spaces leave one with the refreshed feel of a five-star day spa. The main bedroom has a dash of greenery from the adjacent terrace gardens as contrast to, yes, you guessed it, more gorgeous views of the ocean. A home as magnificent as this is best experienced in person and we recommend you arrange a private viewing at your convenience. Make sure to pack a picnic basket and your sunscreen, and head straight to one of the most amazing beaches in the world straight afterwards. There is good reason why Cape Town continues to be ranked as a top tourist destination in the world, and this particular stretch of paradise plays a large part in the city’s allure. Make it part of your life.

THE WORLD’S FIRST MULTI-ROOM INSTRUMENT

amaha’s Disklavier reproducing piano is the most advanced instrument of its kind, and converging technologies now successfully link the new Yamaha Disklavier Enspire to the company’s highly acclaimed MusicCast wireless multi-room audio system. This allows Yamaha piano owners to experience great piano performances anywhere in their homes, and to control them right from their mobile devices. Yamaha sells more Disklavier pianos than any other modern day reproducing piano manufacturer, largely due to the instrument’s perfect balance of fine craftsmanship, engaging sound, unrivalled multimedia capabilities and lifestyle versatility. Further satisfying the growing needs of today’s multimedia family, the Disklavier can be enjoyed or practiced upon in silence with headphones at the touch of a button. Unlike other reproducing pianos, the Disklavier is the only one that features DisklavierTV™, a subscription service capable of streaming live and on-demand, note-for-note piano performances by top artists around the world or from the stages of prestigious music events such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, directly to a Disklavier in the living room. As these artists perform in one location, their entire performance is streamed to Disklavier pianos and the remote instruments’ keys and pedals move up and down to faithfully recreate the original performance. Disklavier Enspire boasts an unrivalled software library – from the finest piano solo performances, to thousands of pop, jazz and Broadway favourites – available through the Yamaha MusicSoft online store. In addition, users can access their content through the MusicCast app, as well as stream music from the company’s Pandora-style Disklavier Radio service. The dynamically immersive music that is produced by both the Disklavier Enspire and MusicCast wireless music technology opens up any room in the home to the industry’s most authentic sounding reproducing piano performances, which is carried over networked MusicCast audio components and wireless speakers. For incredible sounding performances in the main listening room, the Disklavier ENSPIRE can be connected to the new Yamaha WXC-50 wireless streaming preamplifier and WXA-50 wireless streaming amplifier to power a pair of speakers in the room. Just like that, the concert comes home to the living room as never before. The Yamaha WXC-50 preamplifier is also capable of sending a high quality sound to compatible wireless speakers in remote rooms. The Disklavier Enspire will be available in South Africa towards the end of the year. Never again miss a single note of your favourite performances, inside or outside. And for a late night sing along around the piano, you have access to an endless choice of music. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

COFFEE KINGS
BOOTLEGGER Ernst Hemingway described how men get to a certain age where they grow used to the discomfort of their vices, like the heat of a good whisky in the throat. One wonders what he would have made of our addiction to the best cup of coffee.
I
n Hemingway’s days, people met in the village square to talk about their day. Our local coffee shop is the best approximation of what that square used to create – a space where people from all walks of life could gather. And nobody seems to understand better than Bootlegger that certain times of day have specific rituals and moods and, therefore, each have different needs. Pieter Bloem, partner at Bootlegger along with two old school friends, explains: “We start at 6.30am with a get-up-and-go coffee for R14 that has been a massive hit as very few places offer service at that time of day. But, by 10:30am the mood has changed, as people begin either settling in for a meeting, some on-line time, or to relax reading the morning paper or chat with a friend. By now, there is a need for a heartier breakfast, more relaxing music and lighting that matches the time of day.” And so Bootlegger continues throughout the day – matching mood, menu and more with the pace of its patrons. The lunch menu is hugely popular, and when work draws to an end, the tapas served with quality wines and beers offers good reason to unwind into the early evening. Asked about the Bootlegger name, Pieter explains how they did not want anything too pretentious. “Think of us as quality without the pretence.” The somewhat eccentric character anticipated with the name shows itself in many small ways. All furniture is bespoke, made just for their shops. Pieter’s wife is the designer Olga Barrow, and she either designed or selected the furnishings, the tiles, the lights, and more. Pieter’s approach to the menu is equally eccentric. “I must personally like anything that we will be serving. If not that, what other measure would I use?” he says. Add to that the best roasters, grinders and espresso machines, and roasting an own premix of three special coffee beans before serving it up at a great price, it is no wonder that Bootlegger’s good cup of coffee and a good times has found a permanent place in Capetonians’ daily lives.

YACHTING
IT'S A BOATING WORLD
It is that time of year again, when sails are unfurled and the best yachts in the Cape get to go out and play. Oh, choices, choices…
T
here are so many great ways of joining the yachting scene. If you grew up as part of the sailing community and have the basic skills, local conditions offer fantastic challenges. And it is never too late to learn how to sail. Sailing has room for several types of sailors – the competitive, the family cruisers and the adventurers who want to sail the world. Catamarans have grown immensely in popularity, and they are no longer just under sail. There have been several deliveries of large sailing and power cats to South Africans this year, moored around our own coastline and as far as the Seychelles or the Med. The most exciting category, however, must be in the large power yacht category. These are the Ferraris and Lambos of the oceans, and the design and loyalties are no less diverse than in the world of luxury cars. If you like smart cars, choppers and planes, yachting is the ultimate step up. All of these choices will present themselves at the Cape Town International Boat Show this year, with many exciting new additions. Boating World, a leading local yacht broker, will be showcasing the French catamaran series Fountaine Pajot, having just sold two models recently. While looking into catamarans, also speak to Derrick Levy, owner of Boating World, about the Polish Sunreef series, the world’s largest cats that range from 60 – 200 foot. Floating penthouses, they are. Both of these ranges are available under either power or sail. While on the sailing side, Boating World also represents the equally famous French mono-hull range, Jeanneau. Power yachts on show at the Boating World pavilion will include the luxurious Fairline range as well as the award-winning Australian deep-water fishing range of Riviera yachts. Derrick also recently added the powerful American SeaRay brand to their portfolio. If you are a serious buyer, set up a private appointment prior to the Boat Show already. You will get the VIP treatment. Contact: Derrick Levy on 082 881 2607 or derrick@boatingworld.co.za

REMODELLING
KITCHEN
The kitchen is the heart and soul of most family homes, and when you think of remodelling this area, it is already bound to cause some disruption to the family’s routine. The premium German kitchen brand, bulthaup, offers an unsurpassed level of operational site management and technical expertise to ensure that what you have been promised is exactly what you get.
“
For us at bulthaup, craftsmanship doesn’t finish in the factory. The level of detail is checked in the factory and goes all the way through,” says Gurmat Nahal, Director of Operations, bulthaup South Africa. With a degree in furniture and product design, Nahal has a deep understanding of the physical beauty of the exquisite kitchens his team fits and installs. He also has 15 years’ experience managing site surveys and developing the service drawings in the high-end kitchen industry in London. Every piece of the kitchen is tagged and traced with a barcode from the factory to the site. That packing list itemizes every single component that needs to be delivered, and remains tracked and known. This way, nothing goes missing or gets damaged and all of it is documented and handled in the most professional way. “I reckon our Management Process is second to none in the industry,” he says. “It includes the on-site visits to check measurements from the build team, electricians, plumbers and, in fact, every part of the process that

affects the kitchen installation. We expect perfection. We work to zero tolerance in our installations and deliver the best possible service to our clients by taking the pain out of the process.” Nahal and his team produce an extremely detailed set of services drawing, with all the technical requirements that the builder needs. They then walk the builder, architect, interior designer, skilled crafts people and client through every item and manage that on an ongoing basis on site. “What sets us apart is our belief in and commitment to communication at all levels of the build or renovation team. Detailed plans only take you so far,” he says. bulthaup kitchens are made by experts for experts – for discerning clients with the highest standards. And for this reason bulthaup is renowned worldwide for creating an architecture of living spaces that extends beyond the kitchen area. With more than 60 years of experience, the bulthaup story begins with the German tradition of fine craftsmanship and precision engineering in kitchen cabinetry. These elements then
became intertwined with the vision of function and aesthetics embodied by the the Ulm School of Design and the Bauhaus movement. Since then bulthaup has built its reputation as the top luxury brand in the field by delivering bespoke kitchen furniture engineered to exact specifications of the highest quality and craftsmanship, coupled with a design vision that delivers classic, timeless designs that stay modern, giving each kitchen a long life. TECHNICAL PRECISION WITH HIGH TECH TOOLS ”My fitting team are gifted carpenters with high levels of craftsmanship. We send them to the bulthaup headquarters in Germany to be trained and certified to take their skills even further,”he says. The fitting team translate information and physically map out all detail on site using highend technology, such as laser levels, and of course what is in every good architect’s back pocket, a laser distometer. ”There is such low tolerance in our projects for variance that
our fitters will be working to within mere millimetres and, in many cases, zero margin for error. It can’t be off by even a few millimetres. That’s unacceptable to us,” he says. ”Our clients don’t settle for ‘almost right’ and nor should they.” bulthaup’s fitters receive ongoing training on new products and bulthaup sends Lead Trainers around the world to train incountry on new developments. CONTINUED PERFECTION AFTER INSTALLATION bulthaup values and expects an on-going relationship with their clients. Unlike with many in the industry, that relationship doesn’t end once the kitchen is installed. ”We’re there if there are adjustments to be made, and to simply maintain the kitchen regularly so that it is as perfect as the day it was installed,” Nahal says. With a five-year guarantee of their kitchen furniture, bulthaup delivers the very highest level of service over time. ”I’m so proud to be able to offer this kind of extraordinary service in South Africa,” he says. ”My team and I are passionate about perfection.”

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” So said a famous German nihilist philosopher. Bob Marley, quite the philosopher in his own way, was more direct. He sang that one good thing about music is that “when it hits you feel no pain.” But, there are ways to experience music and then there is the sheer thrill offered by The Listening Room.
THE LISTENING ROOM INEXPRESSIBLE ECSTASY P R O P E R T Y PA G E S | 3 6
LUXURY AUDIO
I
t was supposed to be just another interview. Swing past the Cape Quarter, speak to the owner of an interesting local shop, called “The Listening Room,” about the sound equipment they sell to South Africans and eventually head back to the office after a few other stops. However, I did not count on Rodney McKelvey insisting that I flop down on their leather couch to enjoy the experience. By the time Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar hit the second bar, I was in a different world where goose bumps and tears would have been understatement. Hearing these crystal clear notes on the very best sound equipment money can buy transported me to the state of the inexpressible. Imagine every emotional and sensual thrill you had ever experienced in your life all rolled into one? And Roger Waters and Elvis were yet to come… The Listening Room grew from Rodney’s passion. A Maritzburg boy, he used to hang out at the original store in Durban during his every free moment, even selling some systems to customers when just visiting his favourite store. When he wanted to open one in Cape Town, Mike Blake, the Durban owner, had no objection. And with that decision, bespoke sound of the highest quality arrived in the Mother City about five years ago. The wormhole to this world of magic found a quiet corner in the Cape Quarter, from where they supply the world’s absolute top-end equipment to those rare people who love quality – albeit it in the sound or in the design and technical specificity of their equipment. On a good morning, shortly after they opened, an attractive middle-aged woman walked in, plonked herself down on a seat, and reached for the headphones, waiting for the music to start playing. She thought that, as in the record stores of yesterday, she could come and “listen!” Little did she know, you can also experience this sound in your own home, “as long as you have the space and a rug.” According to Rodney, “Anyone can have a good system. And, you don’t always need a rug – just a space where you can enjoy your music.” This is what you need to know. There is something for everyone’s price. Yes, a top-end system, built up from the best of everything, and including none of the famous brand names you thought were hot, could set you back a cool R3.5 million (See side-bar). But, the average installation can kick-in from as little as R50 000 and already deliver a complete change in your lifestyle. “There is hi-fi, where those famous brands you may know operate, and then there is what we sell at the top-end. Some of them make beautiful equipment, but this is about the sound first and foremost.” I do wonder. To me, the equipment I see at The Listening Room is every bit of what a kid must see from outside a candy store. The birch-wood turntable made by Palmer should sit in a room just by itself, for its beauty. The beasts built by Vandersteen, R1.5 million speakers apiece and winner of the best loudspeaker category two year in a row at the Munich Hi-end show,
look like they came down from outer space. I last saw such lines on Superman’s Kryptonite crystals. Good news is that when you place your order, you send your colour match along for a complete bespoke build. No swatches needed. The valve amplifiers outshine the solid state boxes, in my view, yet it is horses for courses according to Rodney. Some customers have their speakers built into their walls and may have special acoustic ceilings and furnishings added. Others unashamedly put their toys out for display in the home. We veer back to discussing turntables and vinyl. On the napkin that came with my take-out coffee, I get a quick physics lesson showing how digital falls short on the range of sound waves that the ear can pick up. When his guests leave at night, Rodney explains, he packs away this digital world. When it is “my time,” he takes out his selection of vinyl, switches back to the world of analogue and “absolute realism,” to experience his favourite tunes with the purest of sound. With a vinyl selection of over 16 000 titles to choose from at his store, those evenings could stretch until dawn. Later in the day, I attend the launch of a brand new French catamaran, and I spend the afternoon egging on some exuberant kids playing rugby in the shadows of our magnificent Table Mountain. Yet, I cannot look at the world the same way anymore, having had this semi-spiritual experience of real sound quality. I am amazed that nobody has yet introduced this experience as a therapy. Charge by the hour to lie on that couch at the Listening Room! When I drive home, I dare not switch on the car radio… WWW.THELISTENINGROOM.CO.ZA rodney@the listeningroom.co.za +27 (0)83 282 4256

MOTORING
Twenty years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is introducing the latest generation of its midengine roadsters featuring more power, greater fuel efficiency, and further improved handling. The new models are named 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S, paying homage to the flat-four cylinder engines that were used in the mid-engine Porsche 718 sports car that won numerous races back in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
T
he centrepiece of the range is the newly developed, turbocharged engine. The 718 Boxster generates 300 horsepower from two litres of displacement, while the 718 Boxster S uses a 2.5 litre engine which produces 350 horsepower. This is 36% more torque than the powertrains of the previous Boxster, which also makes them up to 14% more efficient than their predecessors, according to the New European Driving Cycle. These power enhancements yield significant gains in acceleration. Tested in Atlanta, the 718 Boxster sprinted impressively from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, while the 718 Boxster S reached the same speed in 4.0 seconds. The top track speeds reached were 170 and 177 miles per hour respectively. The completely retuned suspension and uprated brakes lay the foundation for exceptional performance and driving pleasure and enhance cornering agility. The electric steering system is 10% more direct than before. This not only increases responsiveness and precision but also manoeuvrability on challenging roads and track as well as in everyday traffic. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is available as an option and includes a 10 millimetre lower ride height compared to the standard suspension. For the first time, the PASM Sport Suspension with a 20 millimetre lower ride height is available as an option for the 718 Boxster S. The active suspension, which has also been retuned, offers an even broader spread
between ride comfort suitable for long road trips and the stiffness required for more spirited driving. The design of the new models’ lines was comprehensively improved. Every body part, except for the luggage compartment lids, the windshield and the convertible top has been changed. Inside, a newly designed dash panel frames the cockpit. The 718 Boxster and Boxster S are immediately recognisable. The front has been resculpted and has a wider, more muscular appearance. Significantly larger cooling air intakes serve as a distinct symbol of the new turbocharged engine generation. The redesigned Bi-Xenon™
headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights are another striking feature. Headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available as an option – a first for the mid-engine roadster. From a side view, identifying features include dramatic, new, independently-styled wings and side sills. Larger air inlet panels with two fins emphasise the car’s dynamic look. The doors are now designed without door handle recess covers. New 19-inch wheels are standard on the 718 Boxster S while 20-inch wheels are optional. The redesigned rear fascia of the 718 Boxster models places a much greater emphasis on width
– especially due to the strip with integrated Porsche badge located between the taillights. The new taillights stand out, thanks to threedimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights. The most recent generation of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, with a state-of-the-art touchscreen, is included as standard. There are more than a myriad of delightful opportunities, like a weekend away in the Winelands or a Sunday drive along the foothills of the Kogelberg, to do justice to the performance and enjoyment of a convertible Boxster. EXOTIC MAURITIUS TAMASSA RESORT P R O P E R T Y PA G E S | 4 2
Try rolling marbles in your mouth. That is what it sounds like when reading some of the delightful place-names on the map of Mauritius. Say “Bambous, Flic-en-Flac, Pamplemousse and Rose Belle” without breaking into a smile. Just a set of small Indian Ocean islands a hop-skip-and-jump from Cape Town, Mauritius sounds so exotic that it could be a million miles away.
A
dd one place to that list – Tamassa Resort. Tamassa is a vibrant Mauritian four-star resort set in tropical gardens on white sandy beaches with rustling coconut trees and a cobalt lagoon. Located at Bel Ombre in the south-west region of Mauritius, Tamassa is surrounded by dramatic mountains and dense sugarcane fields. We felt spoilt from the minute we arrived. Through the large window at reception, I could see the blue waters beckoning while we refreshed from our travel with scented cooling towels and fruit smoothies. Every detail: the tranquil music, the water features, the fresh hibiscus accents and open, simple yet elegant interior gave a sense of the luxury and serenity to be experienced during our stay. In our view, or so we thought, you come to Tamassa for the beaches and magical warm waters, first and foremost. So, this is where we spent most of our first few days. Situated in a very safe bay, we would alternate our days between playing Action Andy & Bionic Barbie during the mornings with all the beach craft, while lazing under soft palm trees with a good book and rainbow cocktails as the sun climbed higher. We snorkelled, went kite-surfing, tried the peddle boats and stand up paddles (who invent these things?), zoomed about on a jet-ski and joined an excursion on the glass-bottom boat to see oodles and oodles of colourful tropical fish. Diving was an option, yet my hilarious Amy Schumer book called hard from the direction of the coconut trees and their shade. (A cocktail, with something papaya that became my afternoon standard, also seemed to have discovered a little inner voice). My partner went off to try his hand at a volleyball game with some very pretty and very tanned people. Nothing like a good, latish siesta on cool white sheets with aircon after a nice day on the beach. After some indulgent showers and large towels in our gorgeous villa, we joined the evening crowd watching local Sega dancing during a fantastic meal. Tamassa takes good food very seriously and it showed with every meal. In fact, I found myself rushing around the hotel shop just before departure to see whether I could find a cookbook with all their vegetarian dishes, given the awesome array of tasty choices. My volleyball Action Andy ate big. His mother would have been proud! And the lunchtime burgers at the “stranded truck” on the beach are something rather unique. By day three, we had worked so hard at relaxing that we felt we needed a break from it all – with a spa day! We pored over the spa menu and went our separate ways for our exquisite treats. After my massage and enjoyment of the tickles of the Jacuzzi bubbles, we met up at the canopy beds to stare blankly at the ocean in quiet. I could hear my own breathing – slow and

“Manzé Lakaz” The true soul of Mauritius can best be found in its traditional home cooking. With a strong belief that everyone is a chef at heart, Tamassa staff were recently invited to share some of their household specialities with guests, presenting authentic Mauritian dishes rarely found in hotel restaurants. Tamassa has now selected some of the best recipes and offers them to guests within the resort, cooked by the “specialists” themselves. The mouth-watering range of local dishes includes lentil soup with leg of goat; venison curry with jackfruit and lilva beans; papaya and carrot salad, and carrot halwa with coconut and sultanas. The backgrounds of the team members are as varied as the dishes. They include a former junior champion boxer, a couple of fishing enthusiasts, the only lady on the security team and a lady from the Kids’ Club. Manzé Lakaz underpins Tamassa’s commitment to highlighting the best of Mauritian culture, based on the resort’s philosophy that guests use Tamassa as a base from which to experience something of what the real Mauritius has to offer. With this sensational innovation, home cooking has arrived at Tamassa.
deep. Relaxed. If not mistaken, we floated around in the infinity pool’s lovely water for who-knows-how-long, marvelled at the different tropical flowers, tried some local tea and might have dozed off for a siesta. By now, time and the days had started to stand still and we saw no further need to ask or consider the date. Then things changed. It started with a quick chat with the helpful staff at the front-desk after our long sunset walk to the west of the bay. They suggested we venture out of the resort and try our luck on an amazing zip-line close by, as well as getting out on quad bikes. We passed on the latter. Instead, we opted for a long nature hike to Le Chateau and popped in at the old sugar factory nearby. One cannot experience Mauritius without getting out into the local population, we learnt. Another magical world presented itself – full of warm, interesting and friendly people going about their regular days, just mere minutes away from our small piece of paradise. Upon checking out, we heard someone speaking about the great wi-fi connectivity. We had not even noticed, having put our other lives on hold for the week. Our only regret was that we had not booked the 13-

CRUISE & DINE
You need not own it to live it. Oh Captain Ahab, you great hunter of the oceans, enjoying perfect weather out at sea and sitting down with the best catch of the day is so much easier through Cape Town’s experienced charter operators and restauranteurs.
T
he Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has deservedly become South Africa’s top attraction; not only to local and international tourists, but to Capetonians as well. Waterfront Charters have been providing yacht and powered catamaran cruising options from the V&A Waterfront for almost as long as it has been in existence, and have acquired a fleet of vessels to suit every cruising need. They know that an offshore hour or two aboard a boat in bracing sea air admiring the views, the sunset and the incredible wildlife is the best possible way of developing an appetite. Given that the V&A has a wide choice of top-class dining options, it made perfect sense to merge the two experiences and now there are several combinations from which to select. It could be an exhilarating sailing trip on a twin masted schooner followed by a Mediterranean seafood meal. Or a luxury sailing catamaran sunset cruise rounded off with an appetite-satisfying succulent South African steak. Or try a sedate cruise to Clifton with thirty of your closest friends, perfectly complemented by Roman-style pizzas that would have gourmets weeping with delight. Top establishments Meloncino, The Greek Fisherman and City Grill have partnered with three of Waterfront Charters cruising vessels – Serenity, Esperance, and the Southern Cross – to make sure that clients have a wide range of cruising and dining options. It doesn’t have to be dinner either; there are lunchtime options available as well. With full descriptions of cruises and meals available on the website, nothing is left to chance to plan the perfect photo opportunity. Play tourist in your own city for the day or meet interesting visitors to our shores. Have a celebration, a birthday party, the office function or just a quiet tête a tête. COCKTAILS
CLASSIC MARGARITA There’s something sublime about a classic Margarita. Just use the best ingredients. • 1/2 cup ounces Anejo tequila • 1/8 cup Grand Marnier • Juice of 4 limes, freshly squeezed • 1 1⁄2 cup ice cubes • Coarse kosher salt for the rim • Slice of lime, to garnish
MARGARITA MADNESS A true Margarita is one that is poured over crushed ice, not frozen, and is comprised of three basic ingredients: tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice. If you want to get serious about making a perfect Margarita, it is worth investing in good quality tequila. Look for 100% agave, which means no additional sugar was added during the fermentation process. Then choose from white, silver, gold, reposado, or anejo, which refer to the way in which the alcohol is aged, with anejo being the most exclusive. Triple sec, an orange flavored liqueur, also varies in quality. We recommend a Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Then all you need are some fresh limes and salt. Here is a classic recipe and then some variations on the theme. For each recipe, you simply need to combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, then shake well and pour into tall glass over ice or straight up. Don’t forget to rub the rim of the glass with the cut lime or lemon and then dip in a saucer of salt for that classic look.

WITH ORANGE & GRAPEFRUIT SALAD Whether you’re heading to the harbour to get the catch fresh off the boat, or have your favourite fish monger at your neighbourhood market, now is a great time to introduce seafood into your regular weekly menu. Fish is a low-fat, high-quality protein, filled with Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin). It is also rich in calcium and phosphorus and a great source of minerals. Here’s how eating fish can help improve your overall health and prevent a number of diseases.
Seafood is low in saturated fat and high in Omega-3, which can not only protect the heart from disease but also lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood.

6 LUNGS
Eating fish can improve your circulation and reduce the risk of thrombosis.
3 JOINTS
Researchers have found a link between Omega-3 fats and osteoarthritis and eating fish as a regular part of a balanced diet has been shown to ease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
4 EYES
A recent study has suggested that Omega-3 fatty acids can help protect the eyesight of those suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition which causes the retina to degenerate and eyesight to become blurred. Fish and shellfish also contain retinol, a form of vitamin A, which boosts night vision.

As well as being a source of many vitamins, seafood provides the
A number of studies have indicated that fish and shellfish may help to protect our lungs. Not only can seafood relieve the symptoms of asthma in children, but it has shown signs of preventing it.
7 MIND
Seafood may also play a large part in preventing depression. New research has highlighted the links between low Omega-3 levels and a higher risk of depression.
8 SKIN
Not only does Omega-3 help to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV damage, but eating lots of fish can also help with the symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

fish oils can help to protect us against serious inflammatory bowel diseases (BD) including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
10 BRAIN
The human brain is almost 60% fat, with much of this being Omega-3 fat. Probably for this reason, research has indicated that people who eat plenty of seafood are less likely to suffer dementia and memory problems in later life. DHA, an Omega-3 fat found in seafood, has also been linked to improvements in children’s concentration, reading skills, behaviour, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
What is Omega-3? Because our bodies don’t produce Omega-3 fatty acids, we must get them through the food we eat. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in every kind of fish, but are especially high in fatty fish. Some good choices include salmon, trout, sardines, herring, canned mackerel, canned light tuna, and oysters.
