We are in a celebratory mood this season (and indeed for the whole year) as 2015 marks the 20th anniversary since The Castle first opened its doors, and we have a raft of events, activities, shows and projects to mark this milestone. The first ever public performance at The Castle took place on Thu 26 Jan 1995, so it seems fitting that we kick off our festivities on Monday 26 January 2015 with a gala screening of Casablanca - the first film ever to be screened at The Castle during the first week it was opened. The first ever live show at The Castle was a community performance of Annie, and if you’re feeling nostalgic, why not look out for the film screening of the all-new adaptation of Annie on Fri 20 Feb!

LIVE PROGRAMME

Welcome to 2015!

Another key event in the year is our 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Mon 30 Mar (see page 23 for details), which marks 20 years since Jeremy Irons, one of our patrons at the time, officially opened The Castle.

Also, please do check out the gallery throughout the season for our exhibition marking and exploring the history of The Castle, and the many people, shows and events that have made our venue so special to so many. Do join us in 2015 and play a part, as we look to the future and the next 20 years of being the cultural & creative heart of our community

Darren Walter Director

www.thecastle.org.uk

In addition to these specific celebrations, we also have a great season of programming that you can read about in detail in this very brochure. Special mention must go to the launch our new Children’s Festival Go! in February half-term, which sees film screenings, live performances and great opportunities for creative participation and play throughout the week.

Umberto Giordano | Opera in four acts Sung in Italian

Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier (1896) presents a fictionalized account of the last years of the French poet André Chénier, guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1794. It is the greatest of Giordano’s operas, and shows why Puccini sometimes feared Giordano as a rival. Taking the starring role of Chénier, with its three marvellous arias, is Jonas Kaufmann; Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of Chénier’s beloved Maddalena (which includes the great aria La Mamma Morta, a favourite with Maria Callas) and Serbian baritone Željko Lucic stars as Carlo Gérard – the servant-turnedrevolutionary who is Chénier’s rival for the love of Maddalena. With a string of successful productions for The Royal Opera to his name, including Rigoletto and Les Troyens, director David McVicar brings Giordano’s thrilling historical drama back to the Royal Opera House for the first time since 1985 in a stunning new production. Trunk Tales

Big Band Night

Love’s Labour’s Lost

Journey around the world with our well-travelled friend as she regales you with tales from Egypt, India and local stories of friendship, kindness and bravery. Using puppetry and the contents of her magical trunk, she creates landscapes of mountains and woods and brings to life characters from the stories of fearsome dragons and arrogant frogs, friendships that last beyond time and species.

Featuring the three big bands of the Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust NMPAT: Jazz 3, Jazz 2 and the award-winning County Youth Big Band with special guest soloists Willie Murrillo (trumpet) from the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band and Becky Murrillo (vocals).

Summer 1914. Dedicating themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years – but then the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive. Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy mischievously suggests that the highest of all academic endeavours is the study of the opposite sex. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to spend time apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be transformed by war.

The children are drawn into the performance through participation, creating waves, playing with animal sounds and even acting out a character or two for one of the stories. Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the high spirits of a post-war house party in autumn 1918. As memories of the trenches give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship.

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon returns with her critically-acclaimed dance theatre production, Park.

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner

A much requested return of one of Britain’s top jazz bands playing traditional jazz with style and verve.

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner has been hailed by Songlines magazine as “another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool”, although to classify these three virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians is to undersell them by a long chalk. A bedrock of British traditional music is to be expected from Steeleye Span’s erstwhile legendary fiddle player, but Gigspanner’s musical reach flirts with Eastern European, French, Cajun, African and even Aboriginal influences. Within Gigspanner, Peter’s musicianship is further enhanced by the flawless playing of Roger Flack on Guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on Congas and Djembe.

A major work from the remarkable partnership of playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, Mahagonny is a satire on money, morality and pleasureseeking among the dubious citizens of a fictional city. story pursues hope in a disconnected, underground world. The Hive is inspired by the likes of 1984 and Brave New World, based on the company’s experience of the world around them where technology is fast becoming a replacement for face-to-face interaction. The Hive tells the story of Koto, who dares to think there might be something beyond the walls of his 8 x 8 cell. It is, in essence, a dystopian love story about rediscovering human connection. Returning from a 5 star run with Pleasance venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Human Zoo presents this award winning piece of theatre as their debut touring production.

Dreadzone In 2013 Dreadzone celebrated 20 years in the game with the release of their 7th studio album Escapades. Hit records, critical acclaim and a huge, devoted fan base are theirs, due in part to their utterly storming live shows. In January 2015, 2Magpies Theatre join us for an Incubator Residency to make their new show, Ventoux. The show will explore the rivalry between cycling’s anti-hero Lance Armstrong and cycling’s Romantic hero Marco Pantani, using Mont Ventoux in France as their battleground.

38

Roland Barthes described Mont Ventoux as ‘a God of Evil to which sacrifices must be made.’ 2Magpies Theatre started this project by making a sacrifice of their own, sending their two performers up the mountain themselves on bikes, just as Armstrong and Pantani did in the 2000 Tour de France. This race sparked a huge rivalry which culminated in one going on to become a formidable champion, the other dead in an Italian hotel room. Ventoux is a replay of this race in the theatre knowing everything we now know about their lives and drug culture in cycling. Nottinghamshire cyclist and world champion Tom Simpson, whose life was taken by the mountain in 1967, adds region significance. 2Magpies Theatre are making Ventoux with the support of Arts Council England, Curve (Leicester), The Castle, Nottingham Lakeside Arts and New Perspectives.

EMMG was founded in March 1999 to preserve and promote monochrome photography. They are a club which welcomes beginners as well as experts who are interested in the monochrome image whether it is produced digitally or by traditional means in a ‘wet darkroom’. They have a varied programme of assignments, speakers, practical sessions and days out. They compile an annual travelling exhibition of 70 monochrome images which are displayed in galleries, heritage centres and museums throughout the region.

Wellingborough Happy Snappers Camera Club are a group of enthusiastic amateur photographers of mixed abilities who meet to share ideas and experiences. This exhibition consists of a selection of the photographs their members have taken since the group was formed in 2009.

A life-long interest in the natural world, especially coastal areas, has inspired Peter’s painting in recent years. One particular area of focus has been the North Norfolk coast with its beaches, salt marshes and wide open skies. Scavaging along the tideline yields an array of shells, pebbles, feathers, seaweeds and other sealife, which provide realistic inclusions in his paintings.
