Victory — at last
In Respect Life Month message, cardinal promotes world vigil for life Nov. 27 By Nancy Frazier O’Brien Catholic News Service
In a message marking Respect Life Month in October, the chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities called on U.S. Catholics to join Pope Benedict XVI in a worldwide vigil “for all nascent human life” on Nov. 27, the Saturday evening of Thanksgiving weekend. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of GalvestonCARDINAL Houston also encourDINARDO aged Catholics to demonstrate their commitment to life “through a loving concern for the good of others” and to work to ensure that health care reform, in its implementation, “is not misused to promote abortion or to trample on rights of conscience. “With each passing year, the need for personal and public witness grounded in God’s boundless love for each and every human being grows more urgent,” he said in a Respect Life Month statement.
Three main ‘risks’

University of St. Thomas senior running back Ben Wartman celebrates after scoring a touchdown in overtime that eventually gave his team a 27-26 victory over St. John’s Oct. 2 in Collegeville. After dropping 12 consecutive games to the Johnnies, the Tommies finally were able to put their losing streak against their rivals to an end. Wartman, whose playing status was in doubt because of an injury two weeks earlier, was a key contributor with three touchdowns, including his 10-yard run in overtime.
The cardinal cited three particular risks in today’s society — abortion, embryonic stem-cell research and “a renewed campaign for legalizing physician-assisted suicide.” Cardinal DiNardo said the U.S. bishops’ pro-life and divine worship secretariats were working together to develop worship aids for the vigil, which the pope has asked be observed by every bishop in the world, as well as in “all parishes and religious communities.”
Parishes gear up for Oct. 16-17 planning announcement The Catholic Spirit
Priests and parish leaders from around the archdiocese are preparing for the Oct. 16-17 announcement of the Strategic Plan for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, “Promote and Proclaim a Communion of Faith, Hope and Love.” The archdiocese recently provided suggestions for prayers, petitions, bulletin information, liturgy and music for use during the announcement weekend and in parishes’ preparation. Archdiocesan leaders are encouraging pastors to meet with their parish staffs and leadership on Friday evening, Oct. 15, or Saturday morning, Oct. 16, to share how the plan will affect their parish. Pastors were reminded that all parishes will be affected by the strategic plan. Even those where little
structural change will occur under the plan should be aware of the emotions that people at merging or clustering parishes will be feeling that weekend. The comprehensive plan will be made public at 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at WWW.ARCHSPM.ORG and WWW.THECATHOLIC SPIRIT.COM. A printed summary of the plan will be available after the weekend Masses. That weekend, archdiocesan staff members and representatives will be present at all Masses of parishes that will be merging into another parish under the plan.
