Bishop Piché to lead Year of Faith pilgrimage to La Crosse shrine The Catholic Spirit To inaugurate the Year of Faith, Bishop Lee Piché will lead a pilgrimage on Oct. 2 to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wis. “In these days when we encounter much confusion and divisiveness in our culture, we have the opportunity to journey in solidarity with those we love and with whom we live and work,” said Jean StolpesBISHOP PICHÉ tad, director of the archdiocesan Office of Marriage, Family and Life, which is sponsoring the pilgrimage. “We will

lay all the intentions of our archdiocese at the feet of our Blessed Mother, asking her to accompany us and show us how to journey to a deeper union with her Son.” The pilgrimage includes a coach bus ride to and from La Crosse, tour of the shrine, reflection on the Year of Faith by Bishop Piché,

Mass, time for individual prayer and Stations of the Cross, lunch and a light dinner on the ride home.

Buses will depart at 7 a.m. from St. Peter in Mendota, St. John the Baptist in New Brighton, Our Lady of Grace in Edina and All Saints in Lakeville.

The Lakeville bus ride includes a 7:30 a.m. pick up at Divine Mercy in Faribault. Buses will return at approximately 7 p.m.

A great deal of resources and work has been invested in addressing the current and future challenges of Catholic education

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over and a new school year is just upon us. Where does the time go? Soon parents will be sending their sons and daughters out the door with backpacks filled with books, notepaper and writing tools. It is time to settle down and let the learning begin anew!

During the past two years, the archdiocese has taken several initiatives to ensure that the Catholic education taking place in our 13 high schools, five middle schools and 85 elementary schools will continue to offer an excellent curriculum that is also accessible and financially affordable.

Since the introduction of the Archdiocesan Strategic Plan in 2010 and the formation of the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools Advisory Council (ACSAC) in 2011, a great deal of resources and work has been invested in addressing the current and future challenges of Catholic education.

In assessing the findings of these initiatives, the real condition of many of our schools surfaced for the first time. We realized then that it would take a considerable amount of effort to realize significant overall improvement within our local Church.

are taking steps to improve the long-term sustainability of our Catholic schools by promoting increased collaboration, ongoing evaluation and greater accountability — including the adoption of uniform financial reporting methods.

We have also begun to implement uniform governance models in our elementary schools as well as uniform and comprehensive assessment systems to measure student academic achievement and growth, which allows us to compare ourselves with other public and private schools more easily.

Although change is always a challenge, we need to be proactive in offering solutions that will enhance the value of our schools.

The end to which these initiatives are ultimately aimed is a more vital and effective communion of faith, hope and love in both our parishes and schools. Putting

the right structures and policies in place is essential for sure, but we must keep before us the overarching project of making the holy name of Jesus known and loved.

Our Catholic schools are what I like to call “catechetical communities” wherein students not only learn the content of the faith, but are also formed in the practice of the faith.

In that regard, our Catholic schools are an important part of our mission because they are tools for the education, catechesis and formation of our youth in the Catholic faith. Without wellformed, educated students who know and live their faith, this local Church will certainly suffer. This is why it is so crucial to focus our efforts on strengthening the Catholic identity of our Catholic schools.

Enthusiasm runs high as youth day approaches

Archbishop John Nienstedt is taking a bold step in September. In an attempt to capture the flavor of World Youth Day, he is going to spend seven hours with local teens at Archdiocesan Youth Day Sept. 15 at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis.

Event organizers expect a capacity crowd of about 900 teens, based on registrations that already have been received by the archdiocesan Office of Marriage, Family and Life. In fact, event organizers have considered shifting locations to a part of the school that can accommodate more people.

One thing is clear — teens planning to go are excited about the event and, hopefully, the chance to visit with their archbishop.

“It would be fun to meet him,” said Andy Renier, a member of Holy Name of Jesus in Medina who will be a junior at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park this fall. “I would definitely love that.”

What Renier is most looking forward to is eucharistic adoration, which is one of the activities planned for the 2 to 9 p.m. event. The free youth day also will include Mass celebrated by Archbishop Nienstedt, praise and worship music by the band Sonar, breakout sessions and speakers, including Father Michael Schmitz, director of youth/young adult ministry in the Diocese of Duluth.

Encounter with Christ According to Father Schmitz, the goal of the event, which has the theme “Reason for Hope” (a reference to 1 Peter 3:15) is to help teens connect with Christ.

“When someone actually meets and encounters Christ in a true way, it changes everything,” he said. “Pope Benedict XVI in his first encyclical, ‘God is Love,’ says being a Christian is not from an ethical choice or a lofty idea. Being a Christian is the result from an encounter,

‘Elegate’ challenges young people to take faith to higher level More than 500 attend music and worship event at University of Minnesota

Invited to the Aug. 9 Elegate event at the University of Minnesota’s Coffman Memorial Union by two friends, Will Schmulske of Stillwater knew nothing about Catholic singer Matt Maher, the evening’s main attraction.

At the start of the show, Schmulske’s friends, Megan and Bethany Hastings of Inver Grove Heights, who were familiar with the singer’s music and knew the event was also about experiencing God’s love, hoped the show would make an impression on him.

The evening wasn’t just about a concert.

St. Paul’s Outreach organized the second annual Elegate event to be not only about music but also an evangelistic opportunity for worship and testimony centered around the Gospel. “Elegate” means to pass a task up to God, as opposed to delegating it to planners.

SPO is a West St. Paul-based Catholic ministry seeking to evangelize college students, bring them to maturity and train them to be leaders.

Singing from the core Maher launched into some of his hits, and many of the 550 mostly college students knew the words.

Between songs, Maher told personal stories and encouraged listeners to enter into worship. “There are 60,000 students on this campus,” he said. “There’s got to be a couple looking for Christ.”

As song lyrics flashed on a screen, he exhorted, “Worship is singing from your core, the essence of who you are — from your highs and lows.”

The young people responded by praising God and raising their hands, a few wrapped in rosaries.

“Ask God to open your eyes because there’s a lot more happening than you see,” he said. “Ask him to show you.”

Displaying a photo of himself as a kid holding a baseball bat that he said he never once swung during an entire season at bat, SPO Minnesota branch director and Elegate organizer Ryan O’Hara encouraged the audience to not be afraid to act — in this case, to enter deeper into worship and make an active response to God’s call.

With honesty and humor, Father Craig Vasek went deep into the story of his own life before his conversion, encouraging listeners to entrust their lives to God and to receive the sacraments, especially reconciliation.

“It’s a daily giving over of self, back to the one who made me and knows how to sustain me,” said Father Vasek, parochial vicar at St. Philip in Bemidji, who frequently works with youth and young adults.

Exclaiming that “freedom starts with a declaration of dependence,” Maher con-

tinued to call the young people further into worship and prayer, resulting in hundreds of pumping fists and shouts of praise.

Two hundred of the most enthusiastic Elegate participants were finishing up at SPO’s School of the New Evangelization, an eight-day program held this month at the University of St. Thomas that offered students, mission leaders and priests from around the country prayer and training designed to help them live and share their Catholic faith on their campuses.

Making an impact After the show, SNE participant George Pappas said he thought those at the event were “challenged to another level. I felt challenged to devote daily time to personal prayer,” he said.

Preparing to be a mission leader at Texas State University this fall, the Houston native said, “It’s a challenge to be real when

you’re talking about the Lord. You need to be honest with yourself.”

Schmulske said the event was a different experience because he doesn’t usually listen to music like Maher’s.

For Bethany Hastings, Elegate was different than Catholic young adult events she’d attended at St. Mary’s University in Winona. “It’s cool to have something to come to,” she said.

Madeline Nolan and Laura Hertzog, both high school seniors from Watertown, heard about the event on Facebook.

“I loved the praise and worship,” said Nolan, who with Hertzog belongs to the CHILL (Catholic Heroes into Loving the Lord) youth group at Immaculate Conception in Watertown.

During the music, “we were singing our own thing — on the inside,” Hertzog said.

Andrea Prisby, SPO administrator and an Elegate organizer was “in awe and humbled” at the event turnout and the spirit in the room, she said, adding that she’s not sure yet whether the event will return next year.

“You can’t help but just fall on your knees and thank the Lord because God did this,” she said. “He brought these people together and it just blew my mind how he took over.”

Chika Anyanwu also was deeply affected by the event, especially Father Vasek’s talk. “He was so honest [even] about his sinfulness,” said Anyanwu, a native of Ontario, Calif., who is preparing to serve a second year with NET Ministries.

“His sharing about confession made me want to go to confession.” (After the event she asked Father Vasek to hear her confession.)

Maher and his band made an impression on her as well. “He was rousing all the people in different walks of life, raising their fists, shouting,” she said. “It’s good.

I love being Catholic, and I love the sacrament of reconciliation. This was exactly what I needed.”

College students offer their service at Gather4Good event

University of Miami junior Juliana Staab recently had a chance to reflect on all the major stages of life during a single day of service.

Participating in a service project called Gather4Good, she and a group of participants in a college evangelization training program called the School of the New Evangelization (SNE) started on Aug. 8 praying for the unborn at Planned Parenthood in St. Paul, then served the elderly at the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home, and then reflected on death and prayed for the souls in purgatory at Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul.

During a time of prayer and reflection with Little Sisters residents, the Greenwich, Conn., native also shared her experiences with the Eucharist and suffering.

“It was a powerful day,” she said.

Transforming experience A more holistic view of service that includes awareness of the spiritual and emotional needs of those being served is a goal

of Gather4Good, sponsored by Catholic United Financial, said Nate Lamusga, youth liaison for the fraternal benefit organization, which offers life insurance and retirement preparation for 74,000 members in the five-state area.

“Some of those most impactful times are when we get into a conversation with somebody and [learn] about their struggle and things they’re going through, and that [has] a significant impact on the servant as well as those that are being served,” he said.

Along with Staab, about 200 other SNE participants and five Catholic United Financial volunteers took part in Gather4Good, a volunteer program started two years ago. At past Gather4Good events held around the state, volunteers assembled military care packages and personal care kits for the homeless and disaster victims, Lamusga said.

This service project was part of training for SNE participants — students, mission leaders and priests from around the country who met Aug. 3 to 11 at the 9th annual School of the New Evangelization at the

Briefly Cardinal urges Congress to act on HHS mandate before year’s end Since the courts will not act quickly enough to protect the religious liberty concerns prompted by the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate, Congress must “address this urgent and fundamental issue before it completes its business this year,” Cardinal Daniel DiNardo told members of the House and Senate.

“Timely and uniform protection of these rights cannot be expected from the current lengthy judicial process,” said the cardinal in an Aug. 3 letter to members of Congress. He is archbishop of Galveston-Houston and chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

Cardinal DiNardo described the Health and Human Services contraceptive mandate as an “unprecedented and misguided federal policy.”

Vatican astronomer says Curiosity will expand human knowledge Jesuit Father Jose Funes is pleased with the successful landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars, and he thinks “everybody should be happy with the success.”

The Argentine Jesuit, director of the Vatican Observatory, said the rover’s mission is important: “to see if we can learn a bit more about Mars and the possibility of organic elements on the surface of Mars,” which would indicate that some living organism had lived or could live on the planet.

The Curiosity landed on Mars Aug. 5 and is set to explore the planet for two years.

Father Funes told Vatican Radio Aug. 6 that he thinks the rover is perfectly named because curiosity is “a driving force to do science, to do research. Human beings basically are curious and we want to know how many things in the universe work: what is the logic, what are the laws in the universe.”

Challenges to marriage, religious liberty are among Knights’ top concerns Catholic News Service Supreme Knight Carl Anderson called the number of attendees at the Knights of Columbus 130th supreme convention in Anaheim, Calif., “a testament to the growth and development” of the international fraternal organization.

More than 2,000 Knights from around the world — many of them with their wives and children — along with 12 cardinals and more than 70 bishops attended the Aug. 6-8 convention.

Anderson made the comments at the States Dinner, a high point of the convention that brings Knights together in a celebration of patriotism.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York — a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 30 years who delivered the keynote speech — said he wanted to turn his audience’s attention away from “the crimson tide” of bishops and cardinals seated before them and focus instead on the Knights and their wives, and the sacrament of marriage.

“We Catholics are hopeless romantics, you know, when it comes to married love,” he said, recalling something a staff member had said to him when he was the archbishop of Milwaukee. In striving to increase vocations to the priesthood and religious life, Jan Ruidl told him, he was not thinking along the right lines.

“The greatest vocation crisis today is to lifelong, loving, faithful, life-giving marriage,” she said. “You take care of that one, and you’ll have all the priests and sisters you need.” “‘For an increase in vocations to the priesthood, consecrated life and the sacrament of marriage’ should perhaps become the new phrasing for a prayer of the faithful at every Mass,” Cardinal Dolan went on, referring not to high divorce rates — but to low sacramental marriage rates.

Pope Benedict XVI has finished the third volume of his opus, “Jesus of Nazareth,” and perhaps also will publish an encyclical letter during the upcoming Year of Faith, said Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state.

The cardinal, Pope Benedict’s top collaborator, told reporters Aug. 1 that the pope had finished his manuscript on Jesus’ infancy and childhood.

Other speakers focused on the issue of religious liberty — a hot topic at a convention with “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land” as its theme.

Pointing out that the clergy and the faithful of the United States had launched a robust defense of the fundamental right of religious freedom, Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton, Alberta — the newly elected president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops — noted that their neighbors to the north are also facing many challenges to their religious freedom.

“Freedom of religion is not merely the right to freedom of worship — it’s the right to live out our beliefs in the public square,” he said. “On an issue of such

fundamental importance, we must be vocal.”

In his homily during the opening Mass, celebrated earlier that day, Orange Bishop Tod Brown said these are difficult times —just as St. Juan Diego lived in difficult times, he said. “In those tumultuous times in Mexico, Our Lady (of Guadalupe) brought a message of love and peace.”

As the patroness of the Americas and of the Knights of Columbus, Mary provides a model of how to respond to the Lord’s call, he said — a model that will be all the more important as clergy and laypeople around the world begin to respond to the call to the new evangelization.

Faith could be focus In a statement Aug. 2, the Vatican press office said the book is being translated into a variety of languages from the German original. “It is hoped that the book will be published simultaneously in the most widely spoken languages; this will require a certain amount of time to ensure the accurate translations of a text

that is important and long-awaited.”

The press office did not comment on a possible new encyclical.

However, many observers expect there to be a document focusing on the virtue of faith to complete a series of Pope Benedict’s reflections on the theological virtues. His encyclical on charity (“Deus Caritas Est”) was published in 2005, and two years later he released his encyclical on hope (“Spe Salvi”).

The pope has called for special Year of Faith, which will open Oct. 11 — the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council — and run through Nov. 24, 2013.

Members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious announced Aug. 10 at the close of their four-day assembly in St. Louis that they will continue to dialogue with church officials about the Vatican’s doctrinal assessment of their organization.

LCWR’s outgoing president, Franciscan Sister Pat Farrell, said the group’s leaders would begin dialogue with Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, who is charged with overseeing the group’s reform. He attended the organization’s board meeting the following day.

Sister Farrell said LCWR members hoped its leaders would have “open and honest dialogue” that would lead to greater understanding and to greater opportunities for women to have a voice in the church.

She said the officers would “proceed with these discussions as long as possible but would reconsider if LCWR is forced to compromise the integrity of its mission.”

Committed to task Archbishop Sartain said that along with LCWR’s, he remained “committed to working to address the issues raised by the doctrinal assessment in an atmosphere of prayer and respectful dialogue.”

“We must also work toward clearing up any misunderstandings, and I remain truly hopeful that we will work together without compromising church teaching or the important role of the LCWR,” Archbishop Sartain said in a statement released Aug. 11 after his meeting with the LCWR board. “I look forward to our continued discussions as we collaborate in promoting consecrated life in the United States.”

In its assessment issued in April, the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said a reform of LCWR was needed to ensure its fidelity to Catholic teaching in areas including abortion, euthanasia, women’s ordination and homosexuality.

Archbishop Sartain said in his statement LCWR brings “unique gifts to its members and to the church at large. This uniqueness includes sensitivity to suffering, whether in Latin America or the innercity; whether in the life of an unborn child or the victim of human trafficking.”

The U.S. bishops “are deeply proud of the historic and continuing contribution of women religious to our country through social, pastoral and spiritual ministries; Catholic health care; Catholic education; and many other areas where they reach out to those on the margins of society,” he said.

During an afternoon news conference Aug. 10, Sister Farrell said LCWR officials cannot speculate how the dialogue will proceed but will see “how it unfolds.”

Catholic schools leadership day highlights progress made

Catholic schools across the United States face challenges in financing, competition from charter schools, changing pupil learning habits and changing roles for teachers, to name a few.

But the educator who led the compilation of national standards for Catholic schools and who listed the challenges also cited as a sign of hope the strategic planning that’s been done in support of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis — the Reinvesting in Our Future initiatives announced a year ago by Archbishop John Nienstedt.

Lorraine Ozar, who was project chair for the lengthily titled National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, affirmed what she termed “bold initiatives” the archdiocese is taking.

Ozar praised the archdiocese for “shaking up the status quo, making us feel uncomfortable . . . but inviting collaboration . . . in order to make wise decisions about what’s really happening.”

Ozar was the keynote speaker at the annual Opening Leadership Day for Catholic schools, attended by 116 principals, pastors and leaders of Catholic schools in the archdiocese Aug. 9 at St. Peter in Mendota.

Lorraine Ozar, the Loyola University professor who led the project that developed the new National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, described the nine “defining characteristics of Catholic schools” OZAR as “national, agreed-upon, and non-negotiable.”

Because they flow from church teachings, define deep Catholic identity, and serve as platform on which the national standards and an opportunity to welcome nine new principals and a handful of new pastors and to give her “state of the schools” report.

The report referred extensively to the progress made on the recommendations of the “Reinvesting” initiatives and the goals for this year in the initiatives’ four focus areas: governance, educational excellence, advancement and funding models.

Much yet to do Frauenheim said the plan going forward is to continue working on Reinvesting’s recommendations.

She briefly ticked off a list of goals, including working on governance models particularly with schools involved in consolidations; developing standard budgeting templates; making recommendations to secure licensure for the 4-to-6 percent of Catholic school teachers without teaching licenses; using national standards as a framework for academic excellence, and developing assessment plans and tools that will aid Catholic schools and educators in both professional and faith development.

Father John Mitchell, pastor of Immaculate Conception in Columbia Heights, said that from a pastor’s point of view he appreciated the support the archdiocese is giving to each parish and school.

Urban Catholic schools receive technology upgrade Sara Kovach The Catholic Spirit

The 2012-2013 school year promises to be a tremendous one for Ascension School in Minneapolis and St. Francis-St. James United School in St. Paul — one that will bring new technology to the students, teachers and staff.

At least 12 Catholic urban schools received more than $200,000 cumulatively in government funding to help strengthen their infrastructure, phone and wireless access.

“New technology and digital devices are part of our children’s lives,” said archdiocesan Director of Urban Education Laurie Acker, who implemented and administered the Legacy grant initiatives in 2008 to help support Catholic inner-city and first-ring-suburban schools.

Dorwatha Woods, principal of Ascension, said a number of students don’t have access to the technology at home, so receiving funding was greatly welcomed.

“The world is changing and we have to make sure that our students are ready for the future,” she said.

Woods is most looking forward to each teacher owning a MacBook and LCD projector. Teachers will now be able to pull up information from their computers or Internet and project it to the entire class to see and respond to, she said.

Schools receive help The technology upgrade was made possible with help from Principal Service, a company contracted by the archdiocese to assist schools with technology needs and funding options.

“Small schools just don’t have the staff to be able to successfully file for E-rate [government funding]. They try and fail, which is a bummer because that is really what this money is earmarked for. So we help them get that money,” Principal Service manager Eric Barstad said.

Barstad explained that his company uses Legacy Grant funds to successfully file for E-rate on behalf of schools.

Just before school starts, Ascension will have all new wiring in the classrooms, new IP phone systems and a new wireless infrastructure for iPad and MacBook use, he said.

James United, said this school year students in sixth through eighth grade will each get a personal iPad to use in the classroom and take home with them for homework.

The decision to use iPads came during the 2011-2012 school year. Fifteen teachers were given iPads to see how they could incorporate them in the classroom. After six months, teachers completed a brief survey and 91 percent said that the iPad was “useful” or “very useful” in their work.

The change means there will be less need for paper-and-ink textbooks. No need when there’s an app for that.

“One big thing we are doing this year

is our whole math book and workbook is going to be an app on our iPad,” she said.

“It’s cheaper than buying a book.”

Everyone involved But to make the program successful, all the teachers and staff need to be fully engaged, said Barstad.

The only challenge Woods sees is making sure everything launches in a timely manner.

“We don’t want to just look at all these new items, but we want to really utilize them for the good of our children to enhance their academic achievements,” Woods said.

Measuring up Ozar, director of the Center for Catholic School Effectiveness at Loyola University in Chicago, took local leaders through the new national standards for Catholic schools. Launched in March of this year, the project is rolling out now as the new school year begins.

The standards include nine “defining characteristics of Catholic schools” (See box, page 8A), 13 “standards” that describe policies, programs, structures, and processes that should be present in “missiondriven, program-effective, well-managed, and responsibly-governed Catholic schools,” and 70 “benchmarks” that provide “observable, measurable” descriptions for each standard and a basis for development of many tools required to meet them.

All of the material is available at the project website, WWW.CATHOLICSCHOOLSTANDARDS .ORG, and includes resources, how-to-use suggestions, and samples of tools for educators to measure their schools and their programs.

Promising future “I found the information stimulating,” said Mary Ann Pearson, president of Annunciation School in south Minneapolis.

“I’m anxious to go to the website.”

She thought the new national standards seem very practical.

“They’ll help us in our strategizing to make our Catholic identity even stronger,” Pearson said.

At the leadership day, Director of Communications Sarah Mealey brought school leaders up to date on the vision and mission of the newly restructured Communications Office.

Mealey explained that the annual report — with all the graphic composition and printing being done inhouse by archdiocesan Communications team staff — was an example of the way her office intends to serve ministries of the archdiocese, which she referred to as the team’s “clients.”

Milwaukee bishops urge prayers, reflection on violence after killings

The killing of six Sikhs Aug. 5 at their temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek brought an outpouring of spiritual support from leaders in the Catholic community, as well as a call for the entire community to examine violence in U.S. culture.

Assuring the Sikh community “that our prayers go out in solidarity with you,” Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki said Aug. 6, “There’s an aspect of we want to do something to help ease the pain of that community; one of the things that immediately comes to mind is prayer so we turn our hearts and attention to God. “We pray for God’s consoling and healing to be there for the Sikh community,” he said.

In an interview with the Catholic Herald, the publication serving the Catholic community in southeastern Wisconsin, Archbishop Listecki said he had just returned from St. Lawrence Parish in St. Lawrence, Wis., where he celebrated Mass, led a eucharistic procession and enjoyed a picnic dinner with parishioners as part of their annual feast day commemoration when he heard the news.

“I was totally taken aback. I was totally shocked that anyone would come in and do such an act of violence, but also to do it within the context of church, temple, synagogue, mosque,” he said. “Here are people coming together to worship God, and what happens? They’re confronted by evil. This tells us that we have to be mindful of evil in the world.”

According to police, the shooter entered the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin during a religious service and shot into the gathering using an automatic weapon.

He killed four people inside the temple and two more outside, then he wounded a police officer. A second officer shot and wounded the gunman, 40-year-old Wade Michael Page, who then killed himself with a shot to the head, the FBI said Aug. 8.

Unknown motive FBI officials also said investigators were no closer to a motive for the shooting spree. Page has been linked to white supremacist groups, and news reports said he was involved in underground music espousing white supremacy.

Retired Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Sklba, long active in interreligious and ecumenical affairs locally, nationally and internationally, said Catholics should consider several things as a result of what happened at the Sikh temple.

“We, as Catholics with our commitment to global solidarity, because we are Catholic, there is a universalism in our faith that we who are committed to global solidarity will be ever more conscious of the need to respect all religious traditions throughout the whole world,” he said.

strong sacramental tradition,” the murders should serve as an opportunity for renewal of respect for all holy places and “every place that is deemed holy by those who gather.”

Rejecting evil He also discussed an important religious item in the Sikh faith that symbolizes adherents’ own commitment to rejecting evil and violence: the kirpan, which is a miniature sword or dagger. The Sikh faith requires formally initiated members to at all times wear a kirpan, which is usually carried in a sheath and worn beneath clothing.

“It a symbol of their commitment to fight evil and to resist violence,” the bishop told the Catholic Herald Aug. 6.

Bishop Sklba recalled that when Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in April 2008, he, as then-chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, welcomed the pope to a meeting with interreligious leaders.

But the Sikhs were not among them, the bishop said, because the FBI would not allow anyone with weapons near the head of a sovereign state.

“So, because of government regulations, we were forced to take them off the list; that was a sadness, particularly because of the symbolism of the sword,” the bishop said. “And that’s what makes this all the more ironic -- and tragic. The very people that are committed to fight and resist evil have become themselves a target in a twisted fashion of the same evil.”

time that, rather than compromise on religious tenets that treat wearing a kirpan as a sacred obligation for professed believers, Sikh leaders and representatives of the USCCB agreed they should quietly decline the invitation to participate in the meeting.

Bishop Sklba said he hoped that following the killings at the temple, the entire community would examine “the violence that is woven into our culture, entertainment and society.”

“And look again at this gun control issue. It is not the solution to every issue, but it is a piece of the solution. And just as worship sites (are posting signs) all over are saying, ‘Guns are not allowed here,’ there’s more at stake societally than putting the statement on the door, than just protecting ourselves,” he said. “It’s a witness to the larger community that there’s something wrong with all the gun-toting

that people are espousing and attempting to protect.”

In his “Herald of Hope” column for the Aug. 9 issue of the Catholic Herald, Milwaukee Auxiliary Bishop Donald J. Hying wrote that “the culture of death will continue to flourish as long as we collectively allow it by remaining indifferent, by feeding it our entertainment dollars, by accepting violence as normal, by not articulating and proclaiming the Gospel of life.

“Peace, respect, reconciliation and justice are hard work and can only be sustained by a proper understanding of the human person as worthy of absolute respect, as the proper end of all human activity,” he added.

Among religious leaders who expressed support for Wisconsin’s Sikh community was the chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, Auxiliary Bishop Denis J. Madden of Baltimore.

“We Catholics mourn with our Sikh brothers and sisters,” he said in an Aug. 6 statement. “The U.S. bishops stand with the Sikh community and reject all violence, particularly violence inflicted out of religious intolerance,” the bishop continued. “We are especially saddened that this horrendous act was carried out in a house of worship against people joined together as a family to worship God.”

Events for young people give much ‘reason for hope’

We need to support ongoing efforts to engage youth and young adults in ways that deepen their faith, give them purpose and motivate them to evangelize their peers

e’ve all read the stories and heard the anecdotes about youth and young adults losing interest in organized religion, or falling away from a belief in God altogether. And we likely all know at least one young person for whom faith isn’t a big priority, or a priority at all.

It’s not surprising in light of some of the trends observed in the broader population. A poll a few years ago by Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., found that the number of American adults who don’t identify with any particular religious group almost doubled since 1990. A growing number of young adults — some 22 percent of those 30 and younger — identified themselves as “nones” when it came to religious affiliation.

Meeting the challenge Clearly the challenges of evangelism and catechesis are great in today’s largely secular and materialistic culture. But there are reasons to be hopeful, too — a few of which have surfaced in the last few weeks in the archdiocese and that you can read about in this issue of The Catholic Spirit: ■ Interest in Archdiocesan Youth Day has soared beyond capacity for the event. Registrations for the Sept.

15 gathering hit the 900-participant mark late last month, with a waiting list of several hundred more high school students.

Giving our support These events complement the effective work that many parishes, youth ministry groups and organizations such as St. Paul’s Outreach, NET Ministries and Partnership for Youth do every day to reach young people with the Gospel message and the encouragement to be active participants and evangelizers in the church.

We need to affirm and support these events and ministries to young people with our voices and our pocketbooks. And we need to continue to

reach out to and involve teens whose faith is energized by events like World Youth Day and Archdiocesan Youth Day and who are looking to share that energy when they return home through youth groups, regular youth Masses and invitations to other worship and service activities.

The theme for Archdiocesan Youth Day is “Reason for Hope.” There is much to hope for regarding the future of our church when today’s youth are engaged in ways that deepen their faith, give them purpose and motivate them to evangelize their peers — changing their hearts as well as some of those less-thanhopeful poll results we have read in the past.

wo weeks ago, Iran’s court of appeals upheld the sixyear prison sentence of Farshid Fat’hi. His crime?

Discrimination, marginalization, detainment, imprisonment, torture and even death are routinely occurring around the world. Profoundly troubling is the role of government complicity in the persecution of individuals and groups.

A Forum on Religion and Public Life report issued in 2011 by The Pew Jeanette Research Center, a nonpartisan and Leighton non-profit research organization, showed that nearly a third of the globe’s population — 2.2 billion people — live in countries where religious persecution increased between 2006 and 2009.

The two countries with the largest populations in the world, India and China, are among the worst offenders in harassment or government restrictions on religion, researchers found. The Pew report also stated that across the globe, Christians are being targeted.

A German court ruled in June that the circumcision of young boys on religious grounds is a violation of a newborn’s human rights since it constitutes “inflicting grievous bodily harm,” which the right of parents to raise their children in a religion does not override. This decision effectively outlaws Judaism itself, since to be an adult Jew in good standing, one must circumcise one’s son at 8 days old.

On Aug. 1, Saudi Arabia deported 35 Ethiopian Christians after imprisoning them under violent and brutal conditions since December for holding a prayer meeting in a private home. They were charged with breaking a Saudi law barring men and women from meeting to-

gether in the same room because, a church leader said, “if they charge them with meeting for practicing Christianity, they will come under pressure from the international human rights organizations as well as Western countries.”

Last weekend, Muslim terrorists demanded that Nigeria’s Christian president convert to Islam or resign. The week before, 19 Nigerians in church for Bible study were slaughtered by two gunmen armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles. The Islamist sect Boko Haram, which has vowed to make Nigeria an all-Islamic country, bombed three churches there in June, and has taken “credit” for the killing of hundreds.

Religious minorities continue to suffer In nearly half of the world’s countries, governments either abuse religious minorities or do not intervene in cases of societal abuse, said Ambassador Suzan Johnson Cook, who presented the U.S. State Department’s 2011 International Religious Freedom Report on July 30.

“In Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, people have been killed, imprisoned, or detained because they violated or criticized blasphemy laws,” the ambassador said. She

also noted a rise in anti-Semitism, from Holocaust-denying websites sanctioned by Iran to an openly anti-Semitic party, Jobbik, in Hungary.

The State Department listed the same eight “countries of particular concern” as it had announced last September: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan. That designation is reserved for the world’s worst violators of religious liberty.

State Department purged reports For the first time ever, this year the State Department removed the sections covering religious freedom from the annual Country Reports on Human Rights. In lieu of including reports covering 2011, it referred the public to the 2010 International Religious Freedom Report, or to the annual report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which was released last September and which covers events in 2010 but not what happened to Christians and other religious minorities in Muslim countries during the “Arab Spring.”

Leonard Leo, who recently completed a term as the USCIRF chairman, told CNS News that removing those sections was a bad idea and that ever since Congress created USCIRF in 1998, the State Department has been required to issue a separate yearly report specifically on international religious freedom.

“It means,” Leo said, “that fewer people will obtain info about what’s going on with that particular freedom or right.”

Don’t Americans deserve to be kept informed about religious liberty both abroad and at home? On Aug. 7, the Vatican warned of threats of “unprecedented gravity” to the Catholic Church’s religious liberty in the United States. We should listen.

Coach observes faith is key to overcoming adversity

He says a healthy spiritual life can help a person to turn a negative experience into something positive

f you have been working for a while, you have likely faced some kind of adversity — loss of a major account, reprimand from a boss or perhaps you’ve been laid off or fired.

People typically deal with adversity in one of three ways: by quitting, by blaming someone else or by turning the situation into an opportunity.

What do you do?

Quitting is sometimes the right thing to do. But usually, if you have invested in an education and have developed substantial experience in a particular occupation or career, quitting is the wrong choice. Quitting means giving up on your coworkers and yourself.

Blaming others is a way to spread the pain around, but it’s not a good strategy for improving your situation.

Blame just alienates those around you, and they might be the best people to help you turn things around.

There’s a label for people who turn adversity into opportunity: winners.

These are people who keep at it and don’t blame those around them but look within themselves to see what they can change to make the situation better.

Getting serious about faith Someone who knows a thing or two about winners is former University of Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne. I remember when Osborne brought his Cornhuskers to the Metrodome in 1983 and they

went to class and excelled academically as well as athletically. Some of these men enjoyed success later in life, Osborne said, but still, many didn’t amount to much in the world beyond the gridiron.

“If you find

yourself quitting or blaming others when something goes wrong, consider where you are spiritually. It might not be your career that needs attention; it might be your faith.

Speaking at a business meeting recently, Osborne explained that faith became increasingly important to him during his coaching career. In the latter part of his tenure, he said he prayed with his players before going onto the field, and his staff tried to make it easy for players to get to

Mass or services.

Over the course of 25 seasons, Osborne observed thousands of men transition into the work world after a college football career. He said the men generally fell into three groups.

The first group is made up of men who relied only on their athletic prowess; they generally achieved little later in life.

A second group of former football players had intellectual ability in addition to physical strength. They

These men, he said, were by far most likely to enjoy a fulfilling life. “The Greeks,” Osborne shared, “said a man’s education is not complete until he is strong physically, advanced intellectually and developed spiritually. Everything I’ve seen confirms that to be true.”

Osborne said all three groups of men encountered adversity in their post-football lives, but usually it was the ones with the spiritual heft who were able to turn a negative experience into something positive and move on, perhaps even stronger than they were before.

So if you find yourself quitting or blaming others when something goes wrong, consider where you are spiritually. It might not be your career that needs attention; it might be your faith.

Those with disabilities have profound lessons to teach us

any of us have hidden fears and hesitations when it comes to dealing with persons with severe disabilities. Their unfamiliar gestures, behaviors and limitations can challenge us and infringe on our comfort zones.

We may be tempted to apply a different standard when we deal with them. Even very young children with disabilities may suffer discrimination through the denial of care to them as newborns or through abortion in utero.

During his presidential campaign, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and his wife Karen were often asked by people about their daughter Bella, who was born with Trisomy 18, a severe genetic defect caused by an extra chromosome.

Such children tend to have shorter lifespans, with 90 percent dying during the first year of life. Nevertheless, with proper care, some can live well into their teens, and even into their 20s or 30s. Bella became known to the public during her father’s candidacy in part because of several memorable moments during the TV debates where Rick powerfully described how Bella’s birth and struggles had impacted their family.

Sharing their struggles Early on, Rick and Karen struggled with the Trisomy 18 diagnosis and with the way physicians labeled it as a “lethal diagnosis” and “incompatible with life.”

other child at birth, Rick, almost unconsciously, remained emotionally distant from Bella during the first few months of her life. He focused on being the pillar of strength for the family through the storm. He later described it during one of the public presidential debates this way: “I decided that the best thing I could do was to treat her differently and not love her . . . because it wouldn’t hurt as much if I lost her.”

Several years prior to Bella’s birth, Rick had sponsored the partial-birth abortion ban in Congress. He spent long hours on the Senate floor lobbying to protect children who were discovered to have “problems” before birth, rather than allowing them to be targeted for late-term abortions.

When Bella was 5 months old, she became critically ill and was rushed to the emergency room. Rick grasped her little finger on the gurney where she was lying. “I remember holding that finger,” he said, “and looking at her, and realizing what I had done. I had been exactly what I had said that I had fought against at the partialbirth abortion [hearings]: I had seen

her as less of a person because of her disability.”

His candor is a reminder of the challenges we all face in caring for and loving those with disabilities and physical limitations.

Having learned many valuable lessons from their daughter, Rick and Karen now serve as even more vigorous advocates for children with disabilities. They realized they had to immerse themselves in the world of special needs, which Rick described as “a different world,” and one where children like Bella “do not get the care they need unless the parents fight for it.”

Facing resistance I recently had the opportunity to meet Rick and Karen. Karen described how Bella’s situation was exacerbated by health care professionals who would not treat her with the same dignity and respect as normal children. Surprisingly, some doctors did not even address Bella by her name.

Rick and Karen soon found an exceptional team of physicians who not only called Bella by her name, but were hopeful and positive about her

life and possibilities.

Other parents spoke to Karen about the subtle but noticeable resistance among medical staff whenever they brought their child with Trisomy 18 to the hospital for medical attention.

The Santorums experienced similar challenges with caregivers and medical staff. They had to fight to get the prescription for oxygen and basic medical supplies that Bella needed after she left the hospital; in addition, a hospice physician prescribed what would have likely been, if administered, a lethal dose of morphine.

Discrimination against those with disabilities should never be allowed to gain a foothold in the medical profession, nor be allowed to guide public policy. The true measure of the greatness of a society will always be in terms of how it treats its weakest members, and the authenticity of our own love will be measured by our compassion and acceptance of the disabled and the powerless.

God seems to send us children with disabilities to help us grow, to remind us that every soul is of greater importance than its frail body, and to teach us how man’s highest calling is found in his God-like possibility of sharing unconditional love.

Religious freedom and ugly assumptions The following is the fifth article in the series “Catholics Care - Catholics Vote.” The series, which will run until Election Day, Nov. 6, unpacks and explores the themes addressed by the U.S. bishops in “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” their document on political responsibility. By Don Clemmer Religious freedom is the odd duck among the issues.

In “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” the bishops hold up six areas of concern for voting Catholics to weigh while forming their consciences, including abortion and other threats to human life, a broken immigration system, efforts to redefine marriage, domestic poverty and international peace. While all these issues certainly affect Catholics, these involve a dynamic in which the church addresses what’s going on in the rest of society.

Religious freedom, on the other hand, deals with the church itself and its role in society. Placing this issue alongside such foundational Catholic values speaks to its importance, as does the newly-issued statement, “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty.” In it, the bishops celebrate the value of living in a country founded on respect for the rights of people of all faiths. They also address emerging threats to religious freedom in the United States.

Some of these have garnered media attention in recent years, such as the Health and Human Service mandate that forces religiously affiliated hospitals, charities and others to cover contraceptives in their employee health plans, or Catholic Charities in Boston, San Francisco and elsewhere being driven out of adoption services because they refuse to place children with unmarried couples, either same-sex or opposite-sex.

For others, the religious freedom dimension is more subtle, such as the Alabama immigration law that made it illegal for a priest to baptize, hear the confession of, celebrate the anointing of the sick or preach the word of

God to an undocumented immigrant.

As the bishops draw connections between these seemingly disparate dots, some of the ugly assumptions that underscore them come into focus.

Cultural pressures For instance, there’s the assertion/assumption that, in order to be a participant in the public square, it’s somehow necessary for a group or entity to buy into certain cultural values. This is evident in the Catholic Charities cases: “If you want to provide adoption services, you have to buy into our views of marriage and family.”

It’s evident in the bishops’ own Migration and Refugee Services losing human trafficking contracts with the government: “If you want to do this good work, you must provide and/or refer for abortions and contraceptives.”

It’s on display in the HHS mandate: “If you want to serve the common good and have employee health plans. . . ” And so on.

There’s the assumption that the government can suddenly dictate what’s religious and what is not. In the HHS mandate, churches and houses of worship are exempt, but religiously-affiliated organizations that serve the common good, like hospitals, universities, charities and other social services, are not. Does the government view these organizations as somehow less religious because they specialize in service rather than worship?

Catholics know that the Gospel mandate to serve those in need is as much a part of being Catholic as going to Mass.

Related to this is the idea that freedom of religion merely means “freedom of worship.” Again, the bishops would view that as a pretty anemic definition of religion.

In their new statement, they write, “Religious liberty is

not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith?”

Providing essential services One final, particularly smug and ugly assumption is the cultural dismissal of the importance of the work of the church and religion in general: “Catholic Charities won’t comply with the new marriage law? Fine. Who needs ‘em?” “The church won’t provide abortions and sterilizations at their hospitals? Fine. Give us the keys.”

It takes a special kind of nerve to be cavalier about the societal contributions of an institution that provided food services to 7,146,490 people in 2010 alone, to say nothing of the housing-related services to 497,732 people, counseling services to 405,848 people, immigration services to 323,312 people, addiction services to 81,866 people, pregnancy services to 93,542 people and adoption services to 38,829 people. (Source: Catholic Charities USA) Megan McArdle at The Atlantic addressed this beautifully in an article on the HHS mandate, noting, “These people seem to be living in an alternate universe that I don’t have access to, where there’s a positive glut of secular organizations who are just dying to provide topnotch care for the sick, the poor, and the dispossessed.”

The bishops themselves note in their statement, “It does not serve the common good to treat the good works of religious believers as a threat to our common life; to the contrary, they are essential to its proper functioning.”

And this is why religious freedom should matter to the Catholic voter, because it’s directly tied to the church’s ability to advocate and work for the common good in the public square. In that sense, religious freedom is at the heart of faithful citizenship.

HHS mandate is offense to social justice, Catholic social teaching

atholics in the United States have never represented a monolith with regard to any given issue. In many respects this is a good thing, as Catholicism and Catholic teaching transcend any given ideology or political party. Simply put, Catholicism is the opposite of ideology and thus seeks to challenge ideological constructs that oppose authentic freedom and truth.

The challenge is that sometimes issues come along that, given their Father moral importance, require unity, Daniel Griffith leadership and vigilance among Catholics. When unity and vigilance are wanting among Catholics regarding critical moral issues, a lack of formation often underlies the confusion.

One thing that has been most concerning in the wake of the HHS mandate is the indifference and apathy among some Catholics with regard to the issue of religious freedom. The HHS mandate, which compels Catholic institutions to violate their own moral teachings and conscience, strikes at the heart of religious freedom.

Religious freedom itself is at the heart of the American experiment and has been an enduring American value for centuries. It is necessary for Catholics to be wellformed with regard to the issue of religious freedom and to be vigilant in protection of those rights that come from nature and nature’s God. This is no time for confusion or apathy.

Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore has called religious freedom one of the most important social justice issues of our time. Social justice, akin to legal justice, is the justice that exists among individuals in a society and/or the justice that exists among individuals and the state. The classic definition of justice is to give each person what is due them. Something is said to be unjust when one is deprived of something due them. St. Thomas Aquinas and many Western jurists and philosophers have adopted this classic definition of justice.

In addition to this concept of justice, the Old Testament biblical tradition provides an even richer understanding of justice. In the Hebrew Scriptures, justice and righteousness are interchangeable and amount to “right relationship” with God and neighbor.

Double offense In examining the present case of the HHS mandate, both concepts of justice are offended by the government’s action. Religious freedom is a natural right that comes from God. The Declaration of Independence states that governments are formed by men to secure the unalienable rights given by God. Religious freedom is explicitly protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Additionally, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) provides a strong and vigorous federal legal right to one’s free exercise of religion.

When the government, in the case of the HHS mandate, seeks to compel a religious institution or persons to violate their moral teachings or conscience, it fails to give them their due under the law and fails to remain in

right relationship with its citizens. Accordingly, its action can be described as unjust.

This was the judgment of U.S. District Court Judge John Kane, who recently issued a stay of the HHS mandate, which was challenged by a private Catholic employer who objected to providing health care services that violated his moral beliefs. Judge Kane said that the interest of the free exercise of religion outweighed the government’s interest in compelling employers to offer birth-control services.

Catholic social teaching perspective In addition to being unjust, the HHS mandate offends several principles of Catholic social teaching (CST.) First, religious freedom and freedom of conscience flow directly from the dignity of the human person, which is the preeminent principle of CST. When governments attempt to inhibit this basic freedom, they cease to respect the inherent dignity of their citizens.

Second, the HHS mandate violates one of the most basic duties of any government which is to respect and secure the fundamental rights of its citizens.

Third, the HHS mandate violates the principle of subsidiarity by not providing sufficient room and freedom to intermediate associations to carry out their work and mission.

Finally, the HHS mandate inhibits the common good of society by not advancing those societal conditions that promote human flourishing. Let’s not be confused as Catholics: the HHS mandate is contrary to our American ideals, is unjust and offends several principles of Catholic social teaching.

Church can teach us about the art of ‘wise hospitality’

T

his Sunday’s first reading about Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs (9:1-6) opens our ears and minds to the meaning of Sunday’s Gospel.

We know that not everybody is good at offering hospitality, and that it has to be learned. Hospitality is a domestic wisdom that cannot be measured by IQ tests. It is taught by families, usually mothers. But hospitality is also often practiced well by Benedictine monks. Where is the wisdom of hospitality best shown?

Wise hospitality can best be practiced in a house. And our first reading says that “Wisdom has built her house.” We know that Wisdom is a symbol of God. And God’s house is our church, where the eucharistic table is spread, bearing the choicest Deacon food and mixed wine.

Andrew We hear that the house has seven Jaspers columns. In the Bible, seven represents completeness, divinity and holiness. Wise hospitality leaves nothing lacking, just as our church leaves nothing lacking in the care for our souls.

Sunday Scriptures

Wise hospitality is generous The reading says that Holy Wisdom has “sent out her maidens.” A maiden is a weak and humble figure in the Old Testament. In a sense, we are all mere maidens, called to extend the Lord’s invitation to the supper of the Lamb.

the gift of hospitality. The host does not impose a dress code, but the guest knows how to dress for the occasion.

The host offers the meal without price and is glad to have the guests linger.

Reflection Recall a time when you received “wise hospitality” or when you offered it to another person. What effect did it have? How important is hospitality to the church’s evangelizing mission?

Wise hospitality is generous and invites many to share in the meal that is prepared. And, the invitations are offered without giving the invitee the feeling that you are doing him a favor, but that you would be favored by the guest’s presence.

The maidens call the simple and the “one who lacks understanding” to the feast. This is because a real feast invites us to put away pretensions, to relax and enjoy

I was delighted to meet a family last year from the St. Vincent de Paul campus of the Cathedral of St. Paul who offered me a ride to Mass with them each Sunday that I was available. I noted that they had many children to tend to, and that I lived some distance from their church.

They replied that their Sunday was entirely given to their church and family, so they had time. Sunday was also the only day that parents were free from work.

We have many worthwhile pursuits that we can undertake only on Sundays. But does Jesus’ invitation, “Forsake foolishness that you may live,” apply to us?

We learn hospitality by first letting the church teach it to us in the Mass. It requires us to slow down and learn to appreciate what is inherently most valuable — God hosting us.

If we allow him to host us, we learn the art of wise hospitality. We can then know how to offer and receive others’ hospitality well.

Archdiocesan Choir Camp ends on a high note The Catholic Spirit Choristers stretched their vocal chords to new heights during the Second Annual Archdiocesan Choir Camp.

Nearly 60 children, from ages 10 to 16, came from parishes across the archdiocese for the week-long, full-day choral camp Aug. 6 to 10 at the Cathedral of St. Paul.

Cathedral sacred music director Robert Ridgell provided the youth with a unique opportunity to learn Gregorian chant, play the Cathedral organ, compose, learn their “voice” and pray the Liturgy of the Hours (Evening Prayer) every day.

“Both last year and this year, I have been impressed with the keen spirit and desire that the choristers have for choral excellence and sacramental beauty,” Ridgell said.

“I love it,” said Margaret Harmen, 16, a parishioner of St. John the Baptist in New Brighton who attended the camp for the first time. “Singing always makes me happy, and learning the Georgian chants and the old styles has been great.”

‘A lot of fun’ The Archdiocesan Choir Camp gives young people an opportunity to experience what cathedrals have been doing for centuries, according to Ridgell.

He would like the Cathedral to be a source of music education, a spiritual home, and a safe environment for youth to use their gifts.

“This is my first time coming to the camp. I didn’t know anyone else and it’s been a lot of fun — a lot of fun!” said Zach Halpin, 12, of St. Bonaventure in Bloomington.

Another first-year camp chorister, Emma Arachtingi, 14, a Cathedral parishioner and Burnsville resident, saw new beauty in familiar hymns that they sang.

“‘Salve Regina,’ is so simple, but we are adding layers and layers to it with the different voices and it sounds so big and beautiful!” Arachtingi said.

In the rehearsal room, laughter erupted after the director instructed the choristers to “Pump your diaphragm full of air” and hold a note, which led to special instructions to the “changed voices section” of young teenage boys.

The camp welcomes all levels of music experience. Rounding out the full days were games in the Cathedral courtyard, a session of “Grill the Priest” and in-house service projects.

“I was most impressed with how en-

gaged and joyful the children were all throughout the week, and I was especially grateful that they sang each afternoon at vespers, leading a number of visiting people to the Cathedral to respond in amazement at how beautifully their voices echoed throughout that vast space,” said Father John Ubel, Cathedral rector. “They even stumped me on a couple of questions, sending me back to my books to check a few facts about some symbols in the church.”

Sharing Christ’s love With the support of Father Ubel, the Archdiocesan Choir Camp expanded its

music staff for the week to include Cathedral music assistant Audrey Seah, who specializes in Gregorian chant; Sam Holmberg, camp organist from St. Therese in Deephaven; and Chris Caldrone, camp vocal coach and game leader from St. John’s University in Collegeville.

“I hope the choristers will take the music they’ve sung this week and share it with their parishes,” Ridgell said. “I hope the choristers will come back to the Cathedral throughout the year in various Archdiocesan Youth Choir events we will hold.

Most importantly, I hope the choristers will share the love of Christ through music.”

bring them to maturity and train them to be leaders.

Gather4Good participants started the day with a talk on Catholic social teaching and then divided into groups that served the elderly, homeless and youth, prayed at an abortion clinic or worked with Habitat for Humanity. Afterward, they came together for Mass and dinner, where they shared their experiences.

Chris Vance, who was part of the same group as Staab, said he was struck by the contrast between the sadness at the abortion center and the joy of the nursing home residents.

At the cemetery he shared, “It’s good to be reminded not to rely on our life. We don’t have control as we think. We’re in

the hands of someone more wise.” Vance is a parishioner at St. Joseph in West St. Paul who will attend Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., this fall.

During their Gather4Good service, Joe D’Amato and two mission partners went door-to-door in a St. Paul neighborhood collecting donations for an area food shelf.

They turned onto a street where virtually every house showed support for same-sex marriage.

Wearing T-shirts that identified them as Catholics they explained that they were student missionaries participating in Gather4Good. Despite differences in views, D’Amato and his mission partners spent time sharing with residents, many of whom returned the good will by encouraging their efforts and giving gener-

ously.

“What struck me was that we were able to show these people — who knew that we knew they had different views from us because their front lawn had a rainbow gay flag and they had a ‘Vote No’ (on the proposed marriage amendment) banner — we still were able to relate to them, meet them personally,” said D’Amato a recent college graduate from Watchung, N.J., who will serve as a full-time missionary this fall at Benedictine College.

Evangelizing through service While service has been part of SNE, organizers wanted to dedicate a day to experiential learning and encountering the Lord through service this year because it’s an important part of being Catholic and likewise of evangelization, said Elizabeth

Gorecki, a SPO mission leader and a Gather4Good coordinator.

“We can bring Christ to [people] through speaking to them, through being friends with them, through listening to them in courses in college,” she said. “But one other way we can bring Christ to them is serving them.”

According to D’Amato, relationships, which can be developed during service, are a big part of evangelization. “Evangelism is ultimately loving others as God loves them.”

As much as service is for those being served, it benefits the servers, too, Vance said. “It showed how much joy there is in service when you’re doing it for Christ,” he said. “We were getting as much out of it as they were.”

As such, they will be prepared to become active leaders in our Catholic Church as well as in our civic communities, bringing their gifts of faith and reason to the issues and challenges of our times.

To guide us toward this goal, we have before us a vibrant and cohesive mission statement: “The Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis form students to live out the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, achieve academic excellence, and lead by faith, virtue and reason.”

I believe that the vision behind this statement helps us to focus on just what constitutes a Catholic school and why a Catholic education makes such a critical difference in the lives of its students, their families and their faith communities.

When a school successfully establishes this identity and communicates it clearly, we find the school flourishing, attracting more and more families to its programs.

This vision for Catholic education must be inclusive; it is not something for the elite or the well-to-do. All families who wish to experience the benefits of a Catholic education should be able to find one that is both affordable and accessible.

As the new school year begins, let us remember with gratitude all those who have sacrificed to provide a Catholic education to young men and women. I wish to thank those parents, grandparents and caregivers who have sacrificed to provide the awesome gift of a Catholic education to the next generation.

I am also grateful to the principals, teachers and volunteers who, with strong leadership and great zeal, strive to provide that education to our children. Despite the challenges, both local and national, that face our Catholic schools today, the archdiocese will remain dedicated to reinvesting in our schools, helping them to be places of intellectual and spiritual excellence.

I believe that we are witnessing the beginning of a renaissance for Catholic schools in this archdiocese — and we as individual Catholics in this local Church have an essential role to play in this renewal. From pastors to parents, from teachers to parishioners, all can contribute toward this effort.

To be sure, there is much work that lies ahead, but the seeds have been planted for new growth for the next generation.

Recounting the parable of the sower in Matthew’s Gospel, let us pray that these seeds will bear fruit of thirty, or sixty, or even a hundred fold.

The Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis was planning a sneak preview Aug. 15 into the building’s newly renovated 84year-old sacristy.

For the past two months, workers from Conrad Schmit Studios of Milwaukee, Wis., have been repairing the sacristy — which houses vestments and other accoutrements used during the liturgy and is where priests and liturgical ministers prepare for Mass.

The plaster moldings in the sacristy have been repaired and the walls

cleaned and painted in the original colors. The chandeliers, which had white plastic globes, have been fitted with colored glass globes similar to what would have been used when the sacristy was added in 1928. The cabinets have been refitted to accommodate current needs.

Last October, the Basilica won the popular vote — from among 25 historic sites in the Twin Cities — in a Facebook contest sponsored by the American Express Partners in Preservation Program.

The Basilica received a $110,000 grant to restore the narthex and sacristy, which were damaged by a leaky roof.

The narthex project was completed last spring.

The restoration projects are being overseen by The Basilica Landmark, a nonprofit organization that builds awareness and raises funds to ensure the Basilica of St. Mary remains a spiritual home and a center for community activities and social welfare for future generations.

Buses to La Crosse shrine to depart from several parishes CONTNUED FROM PAGE 1A Oct. 11, 2012 — the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council — to Nov. 24, 2013, the feast of Christ the King.

The purpose of the observance, the pope said, is to help Catholics appreciate the gift of faith, deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their commitment to sharing their faith with others.

Pilgrimage organizers said parishes of the archdiocese may wish to keep a petition book in church during the month of September and encourage parishioners to write their intentions.

The book will be sent with pilgrims or can be dropped off at Hayden Center in St. Paul. During Mass at the shrine, the

petitions will be brought forth at the presentation of the gifts.

“Making this trip together magnifies and unites the desires of our hearts and our confidence in God,” Stolpestad said.

“We recall our earthly journey toward heaven as we take the time for one day to stop our ‘normal activity’ and dedicate ourselves to prayer, placing all our confidence, all our trust in God.” Archbishop John Nienstedt will lead a similar pilgrimage on May 21. 2012 marks the 11th year The Catholic Spirit is honoring Leading With Faith award winners — men and women whose business practices reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ and the church.

This year’s winners are business owners, managers and executives who hail from a variety of fields — from a bank vice president and family dentist to a dance studio director and parish social justice coordinator.

Nominations were solicited from throughout the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Winners were selected in each of three categories: large business, small business and nonprofit organizations.

The winners were honored at the annual Catholic Spirit Leading With Faith lunch Aug. 15 at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. Archbishop John Nienstedt presented the awards.

A few years ago, there was a morning where I had been called during the night to go and see a newborn baby who was born with a lot of very complicated problems, a lot of birth deformities. This child was very fragile and obviously struggling.

I came as a consultant. I came to address a group of medical issues for this child and to play my role as a physician in my specialty in trying to understand this child. So, I met the baby and family.

It was later that afternoon when I got a phone call asking if I could come back and see the baby. When I spoke to the secretary who made the call, I thought for a moment that they might have missed the fact that I had already been there because this is one of the tasks that the secretaries often have — make sure that the consultants have come and done their work.

We had an open house last summer and this young boy who lived across the street came in and he obviously needed some food and some caring for. So, I invited him in and talked to him. He started to come here and help out a little bit with some cleaning and things like that. . . . He was able to take free break dancing lessons. It really helped keep him out of trouble.

It was quite amazing to me because I thought I would be helping more of my students, but it was just somebody random who walked off the street. And, we had a place for him to come and learn and feel safe.

Doctor says medicine, diaconal ministry each heal in their own way CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2B said, ‘We were wondering: Could you come back because the parents would like the baby to be baptized?’ The point was that some of the folks — a couple of the nurses — knew of my diaconal work.

When it became evident that the baby was failing and very likely wasn’t going to be able to survive, the focus shifted from the medical evaluation, and all that goes on with that, to a different focus.

The family spoke about wanting to have the baby baptized. As it happened, the family was Catholic. So, the nurses mentioned that I was a deacon.

In the afternoon, I came back and baptized the baby.

It was really quite a remarkable experience — this intersecting of the ministry of medicine and diaconal ministry, healing each in their own way. The baby did die later that night.

There are other times when I am called upon to speak

in a more public way for the merit of the children we serve. And, that’s engaging the public square — whether it’s the Legislature or state government — around the funding of the children that we take care of, to speak about their needs, the merit of those needs, why we should allocate resources for helping them and their families.

In medicine, physicians receive undue notice. Too much attention is paid to physicians and, to be more specific, too much credit is given and, at times, too much blame is given. Physicians are too much at the focus of what medicine is.

In this environment, we know that medicine is a group activity. I could walk you through the hallways, introduce you to a ton of people. Every last one of those people plays a role in taking care of the kids we serve.

When you move into this notion of being part of a group and acknowledge that patients need all of these

people [caregivers], you now open yourself to growing and changing and learning and helping everybody who’s going to be a part of taking care of that child, bring their best efforts to caring for that child.

I’m not the same person I was 27 years ago. I’ve grown and changed a lot over those years.

I think probably the single smartest thing I ever did in my career as a physician was to pick a place and stay there, and to have, as the Benedictines would say, stability. There are three vows or promises that Benedictines make when they become part of the community and one of them is stability — the pledge to stay, to come and to stay.

I’m most proud of all the people who work here, and their unfailing commitment to the patients we serve.

This organization and its people buy into the premise that the only reason that we exist is to serve people, to serve patients. It’s impossible to describe how much difference that makes in medicine.

This water was killing them. So, we applied our faith. . . . The parish has raised over $250,000 to get water filter systems in each home, and we’re halfway there.

We shared the story and [the project] just spread like wildfire here. It connected with everybody’s sense of so basic a need, of water and people without [it]. It’s just been amazing.

We’ve been going down there since the year 2001. The water project began in 2007. That was fun. It’s still awesome.

The example of Archbishop [Harry] Flynn has been immense in my life. I can get project oriented, I can get driven, my type A can step in, and all I have to do is see his picture, and I remember what’s [important]. It’s really the person in front of you, and that slows me down and helps me to pay attention to what’s really [important].

You can talk about the dignity of human life. Archbishop Flynn just exemplified to me that dignity of each individual because he gave you 100 percent of his attention when he was with you. We share a common dream and we share this dignity of human life.

I think the most important aspect is I try to deal with people as individuals and respect them as individuals and as creations of God. Banking is a little bit of a secular world some days, so that can be a little challenging. I think we have a number of instances with the recession where people are having some economic challenges, and I get the opportunity to meet with them from time to time.

In those situations that are difficult, we always try to deal with people in a respectful way, in a way that’s honest but recognizes their

challenges and situations. . . . I try to be mindful of my faith in how to deal with people who are undergoing some challenges.

I went to St. Thomas Academy and the University of St. Thomas. I think the education I got at those Catholic institutions that was values-based — which, at the college level included ethics and theology — is the foundation that I have used.

We have a special emphasis on helping people in the urban community. Having a team that’s out working with people in the core urban area and trying to do good things in our community is probably what I’m most proud of.

We do lots of things in the community. We work with a number of nonprofit organizations that are specifically focused on improving housing and the housing stock in the Twin Cities and in the urban community. We finance these organizations’ efforts to rehab homes and make homes that are attractive places for families to live in.

We are out every day, working with people who are taking homes that are uninhabitable and making them habitable. Typically, these would be new homes for people that wouldn’t really have a lot of other options.

those kinds of decisions, you have to be a priest.’ So I went on to the seminary with not quite the right intentions, but I ended up eventually with Catholic Charities. And, that’s where I found the fit with my faith and my passion for people who are poor.

Our faith tells us, the Gospels tell us, Jesus tells us that the care of the poor and the most vulnerable among us is to be our top priority.

That’s been a perfect fit for me over the years.

I’ve been just abundantly blessed to serve at Catholic Charities for over 35 years and to carry out that mission to help those that need us most in the most difficult times in their lives.

Profile:

One of the fundamental principals of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of the human person. We were created in the image of God. So, the dignity and respect that we hold for one another is a reflection of our respect for God. I have taught that consistently, wherever I have been at Catholic Charities, and insisted that that’s how we run the organization. It makes an incredible difference.

Typically when I come new into a place within the Catholic Charities organization, people talk about major culture change within a year. The culture change is in how we treat one another and how we show that respect not only for the people we serve, but for each other as employees working, and as volunteers working, for Catholic Charities. That’s been a fundamental principle that I just insist on. Time and again it has made a difference for people.

I work in an area where people who struggle with addiction sometimes lose everything. . . . It can impact them financially.

It can impact their ability to work, but yet people need help.

It’s not uncommon for us to have people show up at our door — even people who are well-educated and had good jobs until their addictions cost them their families and homes and their careers. We don’t know whether we are going to be paid or not for their care. But we always say, ‘Let’s do the right thing for this person.’ I believe that when you do that, it all works out. I can see that time and time again.

That’s part of the history of this organization that I work in. It’s part of the mission that the Sisters of St. Joseph established when they opened this hospital. They have a mantra of welcoming all without distinction.

It’s definitely acceptable here to be speaking up where you think something isn’t right. We’re encouraged to bring things to people’s attention that aren’t right. So, it’s asking questions about: Is this what we should be doing? Is there another way to do this, and have we thought about an alternative approach to what we’re doing? It’s about keeping in mind always that you’re treating everybody in the company the way you would want to be treated.

We’re going through a transformation right now in my organization. We have a lot of different IT systems around the world and we’re in the process of transitioning to a new computer system. Over time, many of the systems we have today will go away and we’ll transition to this new system.

I worked with the IT operating committee to ask for greater visibility into some of those organization changes that are going to be impacting a number of those individuals. . . .

For the people who have been basically keeping our company up and running with the systems we have today, we’ve asked for opportunities for them to be trained on the new system so that there is a career path for them going forward as we go through this giant transformation.

In a small business where we’re selling products into the community, we get a good referral network. It’s a lot of word of mouth that’s used for advertising. You treat somebody right, and they’re going to tell their friend, who ends up buying a machine. [SuperMax Tools

makes drum, brush, and wide belt sanders.]

People will post things about our company on the Internet. If you treat people right, the word spreads. If you look at our website, there are several postings of people saying, ‘What I hear about your company is true. You treat us well.’

Norm Richards, a retired gentleman down in Arizona, had a big machine, a 50-inch machine for doing table tops. We sold that for him. He came to us and said, ‘I’m retired, I’ve got cancer.’ We said, ‘OK, we’ll help you sell that machine because you don’t need it anymore.’

So, we sold that. . . . We treated him the way I would treat my father.

hope to be treated is what we’ve learned from the time we were kids — with respect, to do what is right, and to do what is morally correct.

Father [Thomas] Dufner has been a big influence in my life. And my wife Jackie [has also been influential]. And, Warren’s a good example to me. We’re all on the same page; we’re all trying to do the same thing. You hear about it on Sunday morning, and we try to live it out at home, and you just continue that at your business, in your marketplace.

Some of the people who work for us part time were customers originally. We’ve got two different gentlemen that have helped us with trade shows. They do things for us and are ambassadors for our company, and they started out as customers. And, that was because they liked working for us, they liked the way we did things, how we treated them.

Now, they’re happy to do things for us. You ask them, and there’s no hesitation. They do it, and they know they’re treated fairly. Because they liked working with us, they became more than customers. They became part of the family and got involved with the business.

It is the way you work from day to day and interact with people. I just continue that with every conversation. I think back to things that I was taught as a child growing up. Some of my favorite learning experiences have been with priests over [the course of] my life, and you hang on to that. There’s a lot more logic to our faith than I think a lot of people realize. And, that’s something I’ve really come to appreciate as I’ve gotten older.

My wife, very much so, has been my rock.

She keeps me thinking, as does Bill. That’s something I’ve appreciated since early meetings and working for him. I’ve come to respect him more every day, and I try and be more like him.

Dental practice built on foundation of respect for staff, patients

I think most of all, it’s important to be respectful to your employees, first of all, because they’re the most important thing. And, treat everyone fairly [and] let the staff people be empowered. We like them to feel like they have enough responsibility and we trust them enough that they can carry out their mission and help our patients.

In terms of patients, we are happy to help anyone that requests our help and our care. We let them know what their options are in terms of their dental needs and let them make the decisions for themselves. We just never try to make people feel uneasy about themselves or like we’re trying to push them to do any care that they aren’t ready to do or don’t want to do.

We have a real laid back office, and I think evidence of that, is we see people that I started seeing back in the early ’70s. We have one family that I’m aware of where we see four

generations of patients, and a lot of families with three generations.

The comment I hear from patients is, ‘We really love your staff, can’t believe how long they’ve worked with you. They seem so happy and they’re always willing to help.’ That’s the message that I give to the staff — our patients stay with our dental practice, not necessarily

because of the dentists, but it’s much because of the staff people themselves, from the hygienists to the patient coordinators to the receptionists to the assistants.

I can tell you about a time down in Haiti [while on a dental mission trip]. This was one of the first times that I went, in 2006. We had virtually no equipment down there at all. We had no power drills, and limited visibility in terms of light. Up here, we have all modern equipment and the best assistants. Down there, we didn’t have any of that to work with.

Taking out teeth surgically was extremely difficult under those conditions, and I just basically prayed and asked for help in doing these things. We were able to do these difficult procedures with not a lot to work with. That just shows we were getting help from on high.

I was raised in a family of six children with parents that were very religious. We always said the rosary during May [month of Mary].

Faith was an important part when I was growing up. In elementary school, we had the Franciscan nuns at our parish grade school.

They were wonderful people. And, certainly the influence of the Benedictines at St. John’s University [in Collegeville] where I did my undergraduate work. The Benedictine philosophy, you can’t help escape that.

My older brother [Father Gerald Dalseth] is a Catholic priest, and he just retired last month.

He was a priest for the Diocese of St. Cloud. My mother was very pleased when he became a priest.

We’ve developed an excellent practice.

We’ve always encouraged staff development and I don’t think we have ever turned anyone down.

I think it’s an office where people feel they get excellent care in a broad range of dental services. We do lots of surgeries, we do orthodontics, TMJ implants. Patients like the fact that they don’t have to go to other offices for specialty care.

The social teachings of the church have been the primary formation for me and I can think of so many people — leaders in Catholic Charities and Catholic universities and bishops — who have taught around those principals. But those principals of Catholic social teaching have been the guiding force for me.

Applying those principals on a day-today basis — with people we serve and how the organization is run, how we make decisions, how we treat one another, the benefits we provide — [these] are all a reflection of that body of Catholic social teaching. I’d have to say that it’s that body of Catholic social teaching that inspires me.

[Regarding achievements], I think the most recent is the achievement of . . . Higher Ground, [a new Catholic Charities facility to help the homeless with housing and supportive services.

The reason that I’m so proud of this facility is that I think you could travel the country and you won’t find a place like this that just reflects, in how it’s built and how it’s put together, the dignity of the people we serve. That was our fundamental principle going into this project. We weren’t satisfied with the level of dignity with which we were providing shelter to people in tremendous need. I’m particularly proud of this project.

every day for individuals. I think of individuals who come in through our inpatient program and continue through our outpatient program and end up back with their families and back in their careers and are successful.

My parents were my first teachers of the faith. They worked hard to send me and my siblings for a Catholic education. I was educated by the School Sisters of Notre Dame at St. John the Baptist in Savage. I had the good fortune of going to Holy Angels in Richfield and being educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph. And then I went to St. John’s University and was educated by the Benedictines.

I wasn’t sure that I should move into mental health and addiction.

Prior to this, I had been the director of social work and I was encouraged to apply for this job by an administrator here, Phyllis Novitskie. . . .But Sister Mary Louwagie is a CSJ and I asked to meet with her just to discern. . . . She has always been a strong advocate for people with mental illness and addiction. She said, ‘I believe you are the right person to do this work.’

I am proud of the team that we’ve developed here at St. Joseph’s. It’s the providers, it’s the leaders that I work with, and it’s the staff. Over the last seven years, there’s been a lot of work in really trying to understand what it’s like and to walk in the shoes of our patients to try to get as close as we can to understanding their situation.

We opened in [January] 2010, so it’s a young studio. I’ve been teaching forever in all sorts of different places. My husband has been so great. We found the space, and it’s close to his work. He works at Totino-Grace as the band director. (she graduated from T-G in 1994). It’s nice to be around here and I choreograph a lot for the Fridley Community Theater and for the high school.

Kate’s as an undergrad, and Jeanette Gudgel was talking to us one day about the cost of college. Several of us were going to college on scholarship and working when we weren’t studying in order to make ends meet. We were having trouble fathoming the concept that the money we paid wasn’t enough to keep a college running. She assured us that it wasn’t enough to keep a college running and that what was needed of us is to be good citizens in that we should be using our time, talent and treasure to give back to those people who have given us opportunities. And, I would say that made a big impression on me.

I’ve always been engaged in some capacity or another at St. Kate’s since then. Early on, more of the time and the talent rather than the treasure. But, the treasure comes over time [after] you pay off student loans.

One way I give back is by mentoring others. When I first graduated, I mentored students at St. Kate's and supported the Business Department's Professional Partnership Program. I have also been actively involved in mentoring others since I started at 3M in 1998.

That same thing applies to work. I’m fortunate to be able to work for a company where being active in your community is encouraged. There are volunteer fairs where they make you aware of opportunities in your community.

We are encouraged to take time away from work during the day to volunteer with our co-workers in the community. This year, we’re focusing on things that benefit children in our community. Last year, our focus was on homelessness. The year before, our focus was on hunger.

I was able to co-lead the campaign with a lot of talented people who run our campaign year after year. I did that for two years as co-chair. It was just a fabulous opportunity to understand how much the collective power of the people at work can do for the people in our community who aren’t as fortunate as we are.

I’m most proud of my students, just excelling and coming back each week in class and trying harder and working harder and not giving up on themselves, and having them see how beautiful they are and how it’s great to express yourself through dance or through acting or through singing.

I have some adult students. I have one woman who is 65 years old and has been too shy to sing before. She came in and started learning how to sing properly and just loves it. This whole new world has opened up to her. What I feel most proud of is that I’ve been able to help people accomplish their goals.

At a studio I used to work at, I developed a special needs program with students with Down syndrome.

And then, when I came here, I really wanted to make that bigger. So, we have some adapted dance. We have some students in wheelchairs who will do arm movements and things like that.

And, we have assistants who will help them dance.

We have a lot of girls with Down syndrome who are just so wonderful.

They did three dances this year at recital. They did a tap, a ballet and a jazz dance just like everybody else. It’s really fun to see their parents because there’s not a lot of opportunity for them to get to do those things. They’re some of my favorite students.
